Great Selection of Beers on Tap

By Joebbq |

Scholz Garten - Austin, Texas - May 2017 Had a late lunch at Scholz, the first time we had been there. The place has an "Old Time" Feel because it is old. Just down the street from the Capital, very Austin. Large selection of beers on tap. Wife had the chicken fried steak with home style hand cut fries. Ok, but not the best. L little over cooked. I had the Cheese Steak Sandwich and it was very good. The horseradish mayo and pico de gallo with Serrano pepper made it. Would love to go back at night.

Good food and atmosphere

By M J |

I had not been to Scholz Garten in about 20 years. Last Wednesday evening, I met about 30 of my coworkers at Scholz Garten. Scholz has inside and outside dining. There was plenty of seating mid-week. We ate outside because we could move around more and we would not be too noisy for other customers. My husband and I enjoyed some fantastic nachos with shredded BBQ and terrible coke. Everyone else enjoyed the different varieties of beer and other finger foods. Our red headed and bearded waiter was fantastic. When my husband and I go back one of these days, we want to try out their German plates.

A German beer garden why not

By WWC |

I drove around the block and found parking right in front - Austin is the Meter Capitol of Texas. One hour cost $1.50 coins or credit cards watch the numbers rise and the price. But, I need to come back inside a rustic building it was late afternoon and self-seating. Not many people were inside at this hour. So I plopped down on a bench seat. Ordered a beer and checked out the menu. German Wurst Board with Weisswurst, Bratwurst, and Pepperwurst, Three different mustards and two pretzel rolls, and Sauerkraut and Red Cabbage is always my personal favorite I like both. Relaxed but I understand it can be a party place during sports seasons so beware. Two sizes of beers and a nice selection. Noted a full bar - the stein on the bar caught my eye. There is a stair down to another dining area and out to the Garden. Also a small banquet room can be found.

Fun times

Excellent beer options. Fun outdoor seating / live music. Great food. The pretzel is a must! Staff is friendly.

Plain but good

By ElvisAndrus |

We went before a Texas Basketball game so it was very busy and they were using a (smaller) event menu. We had a sausage with Mac and cheese on a piece of bread. A hot dog. A good one but you’d expect that for the price. Also had a veal meal with slaw and cooked shredded beats. Portions not miniature but not big and the food just seemed pedantic. Our server was great and the dunkel I ordered was very enjoyable.

Vast improvement to the German Fare

By Bald_Eagle78758 |

A new company has taken over as Scholz Garten, an abbreviated menu for now. The Curry-wurst is excellent, as is the Bratwurst.

Must go. Awesome service and food.

By Tim M |

Anthony was our great server. He was very attentive and enthusiastic and made great recommendations. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch featuring awesome german pretzel and brauts. Highly recommend.

Menu changed drastically

By Tim S |

Menu has changed. Nothing like what is listed on this site. It is basically now a small choice of salads and a few wursts. I walked from downtown to get the jaegerschnitzel, but was very disappointed to find the limited menu. Apparently, there was a change of ownership in June and the menu changed at that time.

Great choice

By DarkLark15 |

This place was packed during SXSW. The host was the waiter, too. Therefore it took a long time to get seated, to get waited on, to get refills, and to get a check. That's understandable, and I'd be stressed in that position. The host/waiter is friendly, happy, and patient. He knows the menu well. The building is from the 1860s with an interesting history. There's lots of variety in beer and food choices. You can't go wrong with anything you order. It's a little pricey, but the portions are huge. They serve German and American food. Live music, dog friendly, casual, outdoor patio

Great Beer and Pretzel, Dinner was OK

By Mark N |

My wife and I dined at the Scholz Garten during our first visit to Austin. The Pretzel was excellent, and they have a great selection of German Beer. However, we found the schnitzel a little dry and underwhelming. The service is lightning fast, almost too fast. I'd definitely go here again for a beer and to watch a game, but I wouldn't do dinner. The outside patio is cool and is pet friendly.

Collge Football, Beer and Brats!

By bobby H |

So right off the bat I must admit I am a UGA football fan first and foremost. Going to a UT game in Austin is something that I have wanted to do for some time because Austin is one of my favorite places on earth and I am a college football fan in general. A friend had tickets to a UT/ Texas Tech game in Austin on Thanksgiving night a few years ago and it was a no brainer that we should go. Great game....UT lost to TT. But the highlight of the day was the Scholz Garten. There is nothing that goes with college football better than Beer and sausage....and the Scholz Garten has both in massive quantities and the quality is as good as any beer in any Garden in Bavaria! The atmosphere is fantastic, especially on game day....and even with a sizeable crowd on game day service is very fast and seating is surprisingly easy to come by. This was a rainy, cold Thanksgiving evening and UT was having a pretty bad season BUT it was Texas Tech so the crowd, while not as big as they get, was decent. I tried several beers before and after the game. I like Heffeweizens and true Bavarian Heffes are hard to find in the US but the Scholz Garten has an excellent example. The Brats was also very representative as was the kraut and the spatezle. All in all a great German experience coupled with a very good afternoon of college football in a storied setting....it doesn't get much better!

Average food in so so place

By smclain4jc |

We ate lunch here and decided to sit outside since it was a nice day. The outdoors part is nothing special and everything is pretty much self serve. The brat was ok but that was just it. The side dish of sauerkraut was ridiculously small for the price, (Maybe three fork fulls and that is probably high by one). One of our party got a sandwich and the tomato had mold on it. The server seemed very disinterested in the issue but did say she would talk to a manager who later came and gave the person their meal price back. I have been to many German places in different cities and this one was just not that great.

Big, fresh, warm pretzels & pretzel bread sandwiches!

By Paul-Michael |

Our family was very pleasantly surprised to discover this place, apparently the oldest continuously running business in all of Texas---150+ years old. We went knowing that we'd try the pretzels (with various mustards and dips on the side), and have sandwiches with pretzel bread, as well as a wienerschnitzel. All in all, very nice. The soft, warm, doughy pretzel bread was enjoyable, as were the sandwiches. It's very casual; definitely not a place to dress up. Service was appropriately Austin: affable, earthy, and relaxed.

Great place for lunch

By Marcelo |

We spent a day in Austin and a friend invited us to visit this restaurant. If you get a chance, get a table outside. Service is very good and our waitress helped us out is deciding what to eat. All options were very good. We definitely recommend this place.

Schnitzel FTW!

By Kaley_Daniel |

I had the Jagerschnitzel and it was very good - breaded just right and great sauce to boot. I also had the German Potato Salad - take note the German part...it adds a different flavor than what you'd think. I'm not sure what word to use and the only that come to mind will give you the wrong idea so I'm just going to leave it at this - it's a boldly good twist to this traditional side.

Good German Food and Beer

By getupradio |

Nice spot for lunch or dinner. Average prices are 6.00 to 14.99 for entrees. Nice sides for 4.99. Beer is good and great flavor as they have various types and german beer. Burgers are nice size and filling. Various foods depending on your choice from jambalya to sandwiches. Not really spicy food though. Has vegetable platter also for only 7.99. Good choice for eating various food choices on a budget or for family. Nice atmosphere for meetings business or casual.

Had a hunger for some German food

By trouthook69 |

Having lived in Germany for quite some time I occassionally have an appetite fro German food. Read about tis restaurant on line and decided to give it a try. We had jagerschniztel and weinerschnitztel both were great. Sreved with spatzle and red cabbage. Lots of different beers to offer. Our server was prompt and friendly. TYhe pretzel was fabulous . Still eating on it today. Large historical bar adn outside area when the weathers good which is most of the time in Texas.

A must during Longhorns Football season

By Raj N |

Every pre-game ritual starts at Scholz Garten. A great place to gather and get a beverage or two before heading to the stadium for a Longhorns game

Willy Tony Felix...what happened to this place?!

By 60_B-Ram |

I've been coming to Scholz Garten upon every visit to Austin since I was first introduced to it 30 years ago. This is my first time going since the management changed. Not a fan. Perhaps I caught it at the wrong time as it was a "game day" Saturday. The menu was extremely limited and the couple of things we did order -- a burger for our son and pretzel bites for the wife and me -- weren't very good. Also, there was no table service and you had to order at the bar -- perhaps, again, because it was a "game day." I'll definitely try it again because I love this place. Here's hoping a better experience next time.

Biergarten like being in Munich !

By Carolyn H |

We ate here very late (10 P.M.) on July 3, 2015. Our choice was to sit outside in the lighted biergarten at a picnic table. At this time of night, it was fairly cool with little downtown traffic noise. The waiter came over promptly and gave us good service the entire time. I love German food and always order the Wienerschnitzel, Red cabbage, and German potato salad regardless of the German restaurant I'm visiting. Scholz Garden's food was incredibly good ! The Wienerschnitzel was tender, and the sides of cabbage and potato salad were spiced just right for me ! My husband had the BBQ brisket sandwich, and he raved about how good it was. Even though he ate BBQ at 3 different places in Austin on our visit, including one highly rated, he said Scholz Garden had the best brisket of them all !!! To me it's amazing that a German restaurant offered him the best BBQ! Now he wants to go back there the next time we're in Austin, and that is just fine with me !! Save me some Wienerschnitzel and light German pilsner beer !!

Terrific German fare

By Gloria L |

I had not been here since they had gotten new management and their menu is impressive. The German sausages, side dishes, and beer selections are great! We started with a huge hot pretzel with a couple of mustards and butter that was so tasty. My husband and friend got wonderful chef salads with fresh lettuce and they liked the diced turkey and ham. I just got red cabbage that was tasty. We liked the Southeastern Australian Cabernet Sauvignon and my husband enjoyed the German lager that had a great happy hour price.

Food is as old as the building...historic!

By Saftsack4ever |

Oldest establishment in Austin, but so is the food. The fries tasted like they were made a week ago. Stay clear of the German food, it tastes terrible and is way overpriced.

Germany blended with Texas

By Bradley O |

Few good German beers mixed with Texas BBQ. They also have quite the selection of German dishes and I don't know how this place is ranked so low. Food was good, beer was cold and service was great. They have an outdoor section that they hold events and big enough for those college gatherings before and after the games. Great find and would recommend for someone wanting to go outside the norm and comfort zone.

Over Priced Beer Garden

By Austin720 |

A long time ago when I was a UT student, Scholz’s Garten was my favorite beer drinking spot in Austin. It was the quintessential student hangout. Later, when I worked in downtown Austin, I was a regular. I was puzzled when I looked around recently and there weren’t a lot of students. I think I understand why. A week ago, I went to a former co-worker’s retirement event at Scholz’s. This what I found. Walk up to the outdoor bar and get a pint of Shiner Bock in a plastic cup - that’ll be $8.25. A pint of SB and a bottle of light beer, $13.00. Way over the typical student budget, for that matter way over MY budget!

Lunchtime visit

By Bryan G |

Went for lunch yesterday. Good food and great selection of beers although service was quite slow despite not being too busy. Don't let this put you off though as food, beer and surroundings are well worth a visit.

Temple of Meat

By Renee002 |

Yes, you can get a veggie burger here and it is good, but they specialize in smoked meat, sausages etc. Portions are large. They have wines as well as beers. This place was recommended by a docent at the history museum because it plays a part in Austin history (German heritage). Try the fried okra!

Scholz 1866 Garten Gratifies

By Marilyn G |

Great German & American food, Saengerrunde bowling, politics, UT, over 200 beers, wines, cocktails, chicken fried steak, hot brown, catfish, salads, sausages, sandwiches, jagerschnitzel, spätzle, knodel, cobbler, pie, an open biergarten where your dog is welcome, an interior air conditioned dining area, and more.Check ahead as they sometimes close for private parties. What is not to like?

The Oldest Business in Texas!

By Philobedoe |

We definitely had to stop at this place after reading about it. Turns out not only is it historic but Scholz Garten also has some darn fine food! We tried the Sausage Board and the Schnitzel and both were excellent. Really loved the Pretzel Rolls! So good! We also tried the Brisket Fries which were terrific, the brisket was perfectly done and the cheese was delicious! Our server was Rachel and she was the epitome of professionalism. friendly, fast, efficient. Our orders were delivered piping hot and exactly correct. Definitely give the Scholz Garten a visit if you are in Austin, you'll get great food and great beer served up by friendly folks all in a genuine Texas landmark!

German beers in the sun.

By Kieranbj |

We visited mid week, mid afternoon so had the place to ourselves. We sat ourselves outside and ordered a selection of pitches. A really nice place to sit outside and cool down with a cold beer.

Dang good German food

By michaelmJ5737GN |

Reasonable prices and awesome food. I highly recommend the pretzel, brats and pecan pie. They were very busy but service was adequate.

Walkable to the Moody Center

By Karen G |

We stopped here before heading to a University of Texas women's basketball game. Our waitress, Maci, was sweet and helpful. She was so attentive and gracious. The beer menu was extensive and the appetizers were delicious. We had sauerkraut balls, loaded fries, and a soft pretzel that was to die for! We also stayed long enough to have sandwiches before leaving. I had the bratwurst and had a lot of different toppings to juice from. Everyone really loved their meals. The only thing that was not a fan favorite was the gumbo, but at a German Beer garden you don't expect to have the best. Gumbo. It was too chilly for us but there was a wonderful outside part of the venue. It was delicious, friendly, and fun! We will be back.

Nice bar and good food

By Karen W |

Stumbled across this bar while walking. Really friendly staff good selection of beers and drinks. Decided to have lunch here good food highly recommend

Great German Restaurant

By ARose |

This restaurant and beer garden has been around along time and has a long tradition. If youre visiting the city for the first time, i highly recommend stopping here. They have a lot of german sausages and food to pick from, my favorite is the knockwurst, and a lot of traditional american sandwiches. Great for groups.

Just not the same

By Joel M |

Yes, it is the oldest serving bar in Austin. Yes, the beer is gold and there are a lot of domestic and foreign choices. However, the food quality had gown way down since a change in ownership. No more bbq nor bbq plates.

Very nice beer garden

By GeorgSa |

Nice place to sit outside on the patio and enjoy a beer or two. Tip: The giant pretzel 🥨 and the fries are cheap way to fight the hunger if fine dining is not the focus. This two dishes are good for 2-4 people to share.

German Wurst Board was Excellent!

By Montgomery F |

Stopped by Scholz Garten on a whim while visiting the Texas Capitol. Very glad we did! The food was really good and the atmosphere was too. I had the German Wurst Board and that was a good choice. Three different kinds of wurst with three different kinds of mustard. Very enjoyable!

Sehr Gut at the Scholz

By John Z |

After a great visit to the Bullock History Museum on a sunny Saturday early afternoon, we were looking for a good and close place to have lunch. We found the Scholz Garten on TA and saw that it was a close walk away. We decided to sit inside since there was a large and rather noisy group on the outside garden area. A quick drink order (I loved the Hacker Schorr dark beer!) and the four of us started in on the menu.. lots of German items and a few North American ones. I had the sausage plate with two different German sausages and red cabbage and my wife had a schnitzel. The food was very good and very filling as German food usually is and should be. My wife has a shellfish allergy, but we need not worry here since they do not serve shellfish. Beer selection and pricing was great, the food selection and pricing and quantities were great, the service was a little slow. The service thing was a bit surprising since there were not many people in the place outside of the large group sitting in the garden patio. Overall a high 4 stars, maybe 4.5.

Salty German Food

By Jackie M |

I've been to Scholz Garden a few times over the last couple of years because it's close to UT campus and so it tends to be a popular place for meetings and outings. They have a great German beer selection, and I like the beer hall vibe and outdoor space, but the food tastes like eating spoonfuls of salt. The food isn't bad, but I've never finished a meal because I eventually get sick of how thirsty I am.

Official Longhorns Fan Hangout

By pdSixty8 |

Historical hangout for University of Texas Longhorns fans before and after sporting events. The bar is over 100 years old and worth checking out and menu contains some authentic German cuisine. The food is good. Nothing fancy here where you can sit inside or outside. There seems to be a band playing outside where a small permanent stage is setup. During football season this place is packed full of fans drinking, but otherwise always able to get a place to sit.

Good German food

By EHBTexas |

The sausage board was very good on a busy weeknight, and the red cabbage excellent. A tour book said the restaurant had good BBQ as well as German food; however there was only 2 BBQ sandwiches which were not noteworthy according to companions. On Sundays there was a special BBQ meal which sounded more extensive.

a different fast food

By Wes G |

this place also had beer and margaritas, so this make up for a lot. fast service, noisy family place..

#6 on my oldest bar in each State tour

By hrcalso |

I had the German Currywurst, Snkickerdoodle pie and a coke--$16. Main dish very tastey if you like curry. Parking at the time I came 11am, no problem. What I saw mostly street parking. Some locals there. Very nice place. There was additional seating in a side room and outside seating.

Disappointed in the limited menu

By Zinnia queen |

Ive been going here since my days at UT in the early 70's though it has been awhile since we've eaten here. I looked at the menu on line and expected the same one when I arrived. It was a much more limited menu than what I found on their website and it was just a normal day, no game or big event. I ordered just a couple of sides, fried okra which was not good and a slaw. Others ordered bigger meals and none were that remarkable. The root beer was good though. I do have to commend the excellent service we had from our server. Probably not a place I'd go to again in the foreseeable future. Sad because I have lots of fond memories of drinking and eating here over the years.

Quick lunch

By akirkman16 |

My husband and I stopped in after walking around the UT Austin campus. We started with the brisket nachos which were so good. I got the catfish basket (fried catfish, fries, hush puppies and cole slaw - so much food!) and my husband got the Thunder brat. Great food and decent service. Would definitely come back.

Long anticipated experience, "swing and a miss" for us.

By Tom C |

We've been looking for outstanding German Food since moving to Texas 15 yrs ago. Still looking. Historic Scholz Garten has a great atmosphere, located near Gov't and UT. It appears, and rightfully so, that they cater to local demand supporting business and UT Fans. The menu is mostly bar food and sausages. Three German specialties are the smallest part of the menu. Understandably, labor intensive German staples dishes such as rouladen and sauerbraten are not on the menu. We ordered wiener schnitzel with potato pancakes as an appetizer. The pancakes were silver dollar size, dried out, and over-spiced. The wiener schnitzel was dry. Luckily, we were given serrated knives. The red cabbage and spatzel were very good. We appreciate the local History but, given our hopes and expectations, we are still searching a fine German Eatery in Central Texas to highly recommend to our friends.

Austin Bucket list

By Jack W |

This place is a must see for tourists in Austin. The old bar provides an extensive selection of beers and the food provided lives by the other reviews. It took 40 mins for the food to arrive however it was worth the wait.

Great experience!

By LARockwall |

Went with a group of 9 friends / work. We were looking for an affordable option that would satisfy many different tastes. Found this place on TA. We sat outside, weather was cool but pleasant. Everything was clean, service from calling ahead, being seated and server (Bailey) was just so great! This is what you should expect in Texas but don’t generally get in Austin. We’re here 2 to 3 times a year the group is from all over Texas and we have a state budget so we try to find places we can visit, enjoy being together and have a good meal. Hard to do in downtown. Almost every one got something different and everyone was totally happy with their choice! Mine was the pulled pork sandwich! We all agreed we would be back! The history was Amazing and the inside looked nice as well!

Solid Beer Garden Close to UT

By Mevoyagr |

I went here for a happy hour one Friday with friends. The atmosphere is good, outdoor seating was ample and the service is friendly. They have what I'd consider one of the better German draft selections in Austin and the food is decent. It might not make my short list of "must stop" places for those visiting Austin but I enjoyed it and definitely plan on returning.

German food in Austin, Texas

By Joel M |

Been here a dozen times. Good for lunch for German sandwiches and ice cold beer. One of the oldest establishments in Texas. Nice seating indoor and out. Service is usually pretty good. Don't go on a UT home football game day as it is packed with local football fans, but during the week for lunch or dinner is not bad.

Sunday stop for cocktails

By susangsays |

Friendly attentive service in the bar We ordered cocktails on a late gloomy Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed the history of this very old bar/restaurant and its German ancestry.

Good food in a historic setting

By Gary O |

This is a fairly typical German bier garten with seating both indoors and outdoors. They have an excellent selection of beers and a good menu for casual eating. Scholz's is over 100 years old and is a frequent gathering place for both UT students and state legislators.

A Pleasant Change!

By kdpbball |

Since we had so many nights of BBQ, hubby wanted a change. Friend recommended this restaurant. Well, it did not disappoint. An outstanding beer selection & excellent food to boot. Any of the Schnitzel platters are delicious. The service was great. This was a two block walk from our Hotel.

Thoroughly delighted

By Nv8200p |

I was walking by Scholz Garten to get to my car and realized in the 50 years I've lived in Austin, I have never eaten at Scholz's. So I stopped and had lunch and was thoroughly delighted. It wasn't a football Saturday, so the place was not crowded. Service was snappy, and the food was very good. Now, I've never had Wiener Schnitzel, Spätzle or Rotkohl before, so I don't know how they compare to the dishes in Germany, but everything tasted really really good, plus it's a cool historic building about 120 years old.

Brings back the original Austin flavor

By Daniel C |

Has changed relatively little over the years. Excellent Tex-Mex cuisine. Barbeque, pulled pork, quesidillas, lots of beers. Can picture deals being made in the shadow of the Capitol. Also University Texas and sports bar gatherings.

More of a Local Beer Garten with good food but not my first choice for German food.

By TX13SR13 |

If you’re in the area you can get a good meal here but not the best German food. The schnitzels we had were okay but they did better on sandwiches like the pastrami burger, chicken and regular pastrami sandwich. Very disappointed in the Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) and German potato salad and this is part of reason I went here. Will go here again if in the area to try the wurst but there are better German restaurants to go to than this one even though this is the oldest operating one.

Great Austin tradition

By randy s |

Locals, state legislators, UT Alumni and current students/faculty/staff spend time eating and drinking at Scholz Garten. Great outdoor patio/garten with good local music on scheduled data. Good beer and a good mix of Texas favorites ranging from Chicken Fried Steak to Tex Mex. you can even have a soft pretzel with sauces. Well work a Vidit to see the bar, dining room and garten.

Recommend!

By barbaust |

We were surprised how much we enjoyed Scholz Garten. We were waiting for another couple to arrive so we ordered margaritas & an appetizer. The margaritas were traditional & good. We ordered Ruben Fries ( I’m gluten free and this had no bread) the order was enormous!! We shared it and it was absolutely AMAZING! Our friends ordered Ruben sandwiches. I was a Ruben day. I highly recommend Scholz Garten!

Great spot! Cold Beer! Best College Game Day!

By Ashley Kamrath |

Scholz Garten is a game day tradition for many Longhorns like myself but it's a great spot to stop and have a cold beer no matter what time of year!

My happy place

By MKB1701 |

Two of my favorite things are German food and barbecue, and the two deftly merge at Scholz Garten. Excellent renditions of German classics with barbecue flourishes (with large portions at reasonable prices) make for a perfect meal. Friendly service, great beer and a nice room with outdoor dining and drinking options cover all of the bases one could want. One of the culinary highlights of my Texas trip - I'll make a point of returning if I'm ever back in Austin.

Nice pre game outdoor venue

By Gary B |

Nice pre game outdoor venue. Good beer and food selection. Had a wonderful time that was close to the stadium and parking.

Zero stars

By Excursion535803 |

Wow you have to at least give two stars. That is totally not fair this place rates 0 Stars. This Place is very busy because there is not much around and if all you want is good beer then it is a fine place but the wait staff is Ruder than rude and the food is some of the worst Food I've ever had and if you read other reviews about the food you will see the same. Poor August is flipping in his grave watching where his creation has gone.

Authentic German Awesomeness!

By Karen B |

Sehr güt! Visited with my husband for a late lunch. I had jegerschnitzel and it was amazing! My husband had fried chicken with fries and the best gravy in the world! Both of us enjoyed a couple of excellent weissbiers on tap. We will definitely return!

Service help food perfect

By ShanaC203 |

My husband and I were in Austin for business and stopped for lunch . This spot is historical and delish ! But the service is awful . Literally the ladies at bar complain none stop sit at the bar or bad mouth each other . While the food was amazing. Simply perfect German food cooked and seasoned beautifully ! The brought worst and sauerkraut are literally the best ever

Great food, beer, and services. Dog friendly in the backyard, too!

By Yoko W |

We usually stop by for a midday snack with our dog. Our favorite is sausage sampler and pretzel, and beer. Great selection of beer and so good! Service is always good. Dog friendly in the backyard. They bring water for him (dog) before us (human). Lol. Kids friendly, too. There is a party room in the back and it seems that great place for wedding party.

Not what I anticipated

By XelaChivo |

After finishing business at UT and needing lunch on my walk back to hotel, I noticed this place pop up on Google map. Surprised to step into German restaurant and the bbq smoke smell was overwhelming in a negative way. Told they had coke products, asked if they serve coke zero and server said he thought so. Asked if he could check. All I know is I got a Diet Coke. I ordered a pork BBQ with 2 sides (macaroni and cheese; and peach cobbler). Disliked the dry bbq, even with squeezing on bbq sauce. The two sides were the best part of the meal, especially the cobbler. And it was served with a lame piece of white bread and butter. If it is being served with bread, would have expected a roll. I would not return to this restaurant in spite of its convenience.

" So Yummy"

By West T |

The food was great and the service very good! Love the history of this place also, a must go in Austin! Did I mention all those beers to choose from too?

nice spot near to the Bullock Texas History Museum

By Glor56 |

We took a break from visiting the museum to go for lunch at Scholz Garten. The service was great and food plentiful. Nice atmosphere with an old vintage and historical feel.

Great Atmosphere and food

By Andy70360 |

I don’t know a lot about German food, but this place was great. You have to get the giant pretzel to start. The sauerkraut was the best I have ever had. After that be adventurous and pick anything it was all great. We brought kids and we didn’t drink beer. The service was great as well.

Good local food with great atmosphere

By Gary M |

Stopped for lunch after walking around the campus and visiting the Bullock State Historical museum. Friendly staff. BBQ sandwich was good with a good beer selection. Be sure to stop when in Austin.

Lunch

By Bob G |

Bratwurst, fried okra, and pinto beans. The beans tasted like canned ranch style beans, though tasty, could have used a larger serving. Okra and brats were fine. Beer selections outstanding, service prompt and courteous.

Great Ambiance

By AuditMan001 |

We stopped in here for a quick bite and a couple drinks. We were being tourists so we didn't have much time. That was too bad because we really like the place. Great atmosphere, service and food. We shared a pretzel, fried okra, and potato skins. It was all good and the beer was very cold. We're coming back next time we are in Austin. We'll stay longer next time!!!

Two very different visits

By Kim G |

Recommend outdoor eating. Inside really smells like my smoker! But the ambience is good. The beer selection is good. Tasty German food. They had a nice mead for us gluten strugglers. Lunch service on a week day was great. Busy Friday night was a struggle due to understaffing. Recommend the Pepperwurst. The pretzel does live up to the hype. I recommend.

Old Timey and great atmosphere

By Gloria L |

This restaurant has been in Austin since 1866 and it serves so many people for many occasions. We have been here for birthdays, graduations, and to listen to great music. I love the brisket and German side dish offerings! I can see myself just returning for a long time. There is a fiddle group playing their hearts out and a lot of people enjoying a meal after a long day's work. Terrific place!

Skip the food

By Apanda8 |

My husband and I took a ride share here for a quick bite to eat before an event. Upon entering the garden area we noticed a small party going on near the stage. In the back of the patio area near the outside bar there was seating available which is where we ended up. We ordered a beer at the bar and was trying to decide on what to eat. A little sad since they had no hofbrau beer. It is my favorite German beer. We ended up ordering a half order of fried pickles. It should be noted that all food came out at once. A half order of fried pickles are 4 fried pickle spears with ranch dressing. Nothing fantastic or special. I ordered the 1 meat plate and decided on the smoked turkey for my meat. I had sauerkraut and fried okra as my two sides. The smoked turkey was the only thing here that was yummy since it was moist and flavorful. The sauerkraut was bland and tasteless. The fried okra was good but it is hard to screw that up. My husband had the bratwurst with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. This meal was not good. I tried a piece of the bratwurst and it lacked flavor. It also tasted liked it might of been boiled. It was what sadness is made out of. The sauerkraut again lacked flavor. My husband said the mashies were just meh and he had definitely had better. I gave this place an extra star because when my husband went to get another round of beer and close our tab he was asked how we liked our food. He told the bartender that it wasn't good. She asked why we didn't say anything before. He stated because no one came by after they dropped the food off. We also were in a hurry since we were walking to a venue for a show. The bartender said, I'm sorry to hear that and she gave us our second round of drinks on the house. I thought it was nice she tried to make up for the fact out food was not that great. I might come back again for the beer and atmosphere just because it looked like a cool place to hang out. Eat beforehand.

Have to go here at least once

Recently stopped in here before a concert. It's been awhile and hasn't changed. Didn't try food, but might again on a return visit.

True Bavarian Biergarten in Austin

By Dan M |

With old German roots, a true Bavarian tradition and classic biergarten setting, this is an excellent place for good beer and German specialties. The staff are very helpful and friendly, though not donning the traditional Bavarian lederhosen :-) They serve a mix of Texan steaks and burgers and German sausages and ribs. The lagers and weizen are brewed according to the German law of beer dating back to 17th century and they also serve bottled, imported beers. Excellent value for money!

Vegetarian options

By Clayton O |

German restaurants in the States aren’t always friendly for vegetarians, but their veggie burger is great! Traditional German noodles were great as well, and the bar has a fine selection of import beers. Service was friendly and the inside atmosphere was fine, though decidedly American in size, layout, and lighting.

Authentic German Food!

By Steve S |

It's always hard to find authentic German food anywhere in the USA; we were really suprised to find it in Texas. Schnitzel, Spatzel, and Rotkohl were great. Beer was also sehr gut.

Oldest Continuous Operating Business in Texas

By CperiodLperiod |

We tried our best to keep it going; we ate lunch there two days in a row. I know it's German, but by now they have thoroughly assimilated with chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and Texas barbecue to go with schnitzel. And it's all very good. The sides are terrific, too! We were required to stay awake for business meetings in the afternoon, or we would have tried some cobbler, pecan pie and who-knows-what-all. The all important Texas iced tea was large, strong and clear with plenty of ice and lemon.

Great food, fun atmosphere

By Lisamarie |

We ate lunch here after touring the Texas State Capitol. The food was great and we had an excellent server. It wasn't very busy, so we got right in. They have a really neat outdoor area where they have a stage and several picnic tables set up. There wasn't any entertainment going on while we were there, but I imagine it's probably pretty fun on the nights when they do have live music.

Good German style vegetables

By Gloria L |

Good German style vegetables and salads are available here. I like the sauerkraut and red cabbage. I also enjoyed a pretzel roll with garlic butter. My husband liked the Cobb salad with smoked turkey.

an enjoyable unch with excellent service

By MrH0bbes |

We stopped in for lunch recently and had an enjoyable experience. There is a great selection of German beer, spirits and food, and we enjoyed all of it. We ordered the pretzel, and it was fantastic, with perfect flavor and texture. We also enjoyed sausages and schnitzel, which also were very good. Our server was helpful and friendly. The prices were surprisingly reasonable.

The best sausages

By Frank Zeiler |

Very tasty sausages accompanied by a variety of mustard that give it even more flavor, several toppongs already included, authentic German flavor at an affordable price

Landmark German restaurant delivers authenticity in it's dishes

By J David |

I have been here around a half dozen times for swim officials "debriefs". That's what we officials call a get together after a Finals swim session to eat, drink and be merry. The place has been around for years, 1866 I'm told. That makes it iconic to Austin in my opinion. It's close to University of Texas which always works for our group to drive the short distance, or even walk. Parking is off the street, or a FREE parking garage in the evening. The area is safe and I have found it clean around the exterior. The place is large, a room with the bar and one huge area in the back and also an outside area that they have music. There is yet another room to the side where our group always sets that could probably hold a 100. There is no mistaking the restaurant is dated, but I have found clean and that includes the restrooms too! I have only eaten here twice, the most recent time was better than last. The schnitzel platter was really good, the schnitzel was possibly the best I ever had. Service for the most part on par to above. The beer selection is okay, some taps and bottles. I find nothing special about the list of beer and wine, but it always works. I can find something good local craft beer which makes me happy. I am sure the next time in Austin my friends will want to come back to our stomping grounds. As far as German pubs go in the Austin area, Scholtz Garten appears to be a clear winner with a clean place to enjoy food, beer and great service. But possibly best is that your probably with a group and that is what makes it all a great time anyway.

OMG, the pretzels!

By VeronicaBell |

We stopped here for beer, pretzels and dessert, and were not disappointed. The pretzels and accompanying dipping sauces were out of this world, and we ordered another as soon as we finished the first one. Great selection of draft beer, and pies can come ala mode with Mexican vanilla ice cream. Will definitely be back when we go back to Austin to try more on the menu.

Good German restaurant

By Onthego1950 |

Nice selection of tap beers and the service was fine. Our food (Jagerschnitzel and Brisket) was just ok.

Pre game

By canyonTexas |

In the garten watching the games waiting on the 🏈🏈🏈UT game . Nice shaded area to chill and have beer . 🍺🍺🍺Have had good in past which is very good 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Amazing food, outdoors location, super local beers!

By TracyB |

We had the giant pretzels and triple-wurst sausage platter. Way more meat than we could eat! Was with parents and young children and everyone had a blast. Huge picnic style tables and easy walking from the museums. 10 taps with lots of local beers!

Neat Setting, Okay Food

By Steve D |

This was my first visit to Scholz. I ordered the weiner schnitzel with fried okra and mac & cheese for my sides. The schnitzel was tender and tasty but fairly small for the price. The okra was pretty good. The mac & cheese was tasty and cheesy. I lived in Germany for a few years so I've had my fair share of schnitzel. The schnitzel here was not the best I've ever had but also not the worst. The service was fast and friendly. The prices are a bit high for the portion sizes.

Fun Beer Garden!

By Tracy F |

Great place to watch the football games, good food, and great patio! Love the atmosphere, and the history of the location!

Good Food and Friendly Service

By CJTravelerTexas |

As we were leaving the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum shortly before noon, I called Scholz Garten and asked if they could accommodate a party of ten in about five minutes. They said they could and when we arrive our table was waiting for us. The service was friendly, accommodating, and attentive and the food was very good. Our group - six were from Poland and were visiting Texas to learn more about our criminal justice system - had a good cross section of the menu, from salads to hamburgers, chicken fried steaks, and pork schnitzel. This was an enjoyable dining experience.

Do not order Food

By Stephanie H |

I should have known when I walked in not to order food. No one was eating just drinking. Beer was fine. We ordered German dishes, literally made me sick. No one could finish their meal. I will not be back. Service was not good. Never refilled water or asked if we needed anything, just asked if he could give us our ticket.

Avoid When Busy!

By Jeff K |

Our family had lunch here on a Friday and the place was packed. The overall experience was horrible. The guy who’s supposed to seat you was clueless, our waitress wasn’t very good, our food took over an hour, they were out of several food items, the beer list was out of date and they brought out the starters at the same time as our entrees. The only saving grace was that the food was pretty good once it finally arrived. My son said it’s a lot better when it’s not crowded. Guess I’ll never know because I won’t be back.

Best wurst and potato pancakes

By amyg352 |

We were visiting our son in Austin. He wanted to try Scholz Beer Garden. Their homemade wursts can't be found anywhere else one with red cabbage and one topped with mac'n cheese. Delicious chopped beef sammy. Potato pancakes were out of this world delicious with homemade applesauce. Homemade peach cobbler with soda of vanilla ice cream.

Oldest bar and restaurant in Texas! Oldest beergarten in America!

By Solutions123 |

Open in 1866 when Austin’s population was 4,000. Oldest bar and restaurant in Texas! And, it’s the Oldest beergarten in America! This is a staple of Austin. Great place to watch sport games. Close to UT and the football stadium. They have German food and Texas Americana food and beer. You come here for the experience, tradition and ambience. On this visit we got Piggy smalls, schnitzel, burgers and of course beer! You have to come here once especially if you live here.

Historic Beer Garden - Great Venue in Austin!

By RikiUSA |

Great German food and easy relaxed atmosphere with indoor/outdoor seating. We had the opportunity to check out this restaurant/beer garden with our son. Our treat and his choice - this was one of the best casual pub/restaurants we enjoyed in Austin. Exceptional food selections made it difficult to choose. Everything was great from the atmosphere, service to the beer selections and bratwurst. Fortunately, for non-beer drinkers like me, wine was available. Easy to understand the reason historic Scholz Garten is so popular among UT students. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, we’ll keep this on our list of “go to places” during our visits to Austin.

Not just a historical landmark

By Yvonne S |

The service was great and the German food was really good. We had the Schnitzel and the Königsberger Klopsen. The beer selection was great local beers and German beers

Prost!

By HermanTheGerman-inTX |

just what the doctor ordered after exploring Capitol and Bullock Museum. A fresh German draft beer and a platter of sausage will reconstitute the man (and woman). Thank you Rachel for finding my cell phone and keeping it safe until I returned to pick it up.

Tasty outdoor eating

By TripletA |

A basic outdoor beer garden with a mix of German and barbecue type food and live music. The price is right and the food is decent - everything is no frills, and none the worse for it. The staff were great. The location is a bit odd - it's literally a bar oasis in the middle of what is otherwise block after block of parking garages, mainly for state government. That does detract from the atmosphere somewhat, but once inside, it's its own little world.

Love this venue, classic Biergarten!

By RWG7777 |

I love how much space this spot has, they always have an upbeat staff and the food is really solid, especially to soak up the suds...if that's your poison.

Part of German Austin

By Tia |

One of the employees, Sarah , at the Hampton Inn suggested we try the bbq at a German pub. So we did. The brisket, pulled pork, and chopped beef were very good. Tender, juicy and well seasoned - we were not disappointed. The apple strudel was ok more pastry than Apple. The atmosphere of establishment was great, friendly staff, and the decor was very historic.

Always good food and good times

By Joel M |

I go here twice a month with friends. The service is always good, the food good and the beer cold. A good array of beers. A good selection of German food and American food. German burgers and Reubens are fantastic. Bar b que entres are good. Outdoor seating is ample. Oldest German style place in the city. A favorite.

College flashback

By Mike V |

I hadn't been to Scholz's more than twice since my college years when I hung out there multiple times a week since it was only three blocks from my dorm. When I found myself just a stone's throw (with a good arm) away on a business trip, I had to go. It is still a great place to hang out with a group and drink beer. We ate elsewhere, but I did at least get to look at a plate of the simple but tasty nachos, and the recipe hadn't changed in 40 years. My co-worker and I sat at the bar, watched some hoops and downed a few cold ones. It still has the 160 years worth of charm going for it. The beer is tasty. And the service is still the typical "who gives a ___" attitude I expect all over Austin.

Hoped for some good German food, but didn't find it

By BruceMN |

With the large German immigrant population in central Texas we were sure that we would be happy with the fare at the Scholz Garten. However, we were wrong. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and found an expensive all-you-can eat offering with few options for a reasonable lunch. Worse yet, when we tried to buy smaller plates the restaurant's POS system appeared to baffle the staff and it took 15 minutes to figure out the check and I'm still hoping my card was charged correctly. The best part of the lunch was the Munich Paulaner beer served cold in authentic mugs.

We miss Eddie Wilson!

By t4689 |

The cool, classic-Austin memorabilia is gone - replaced by lame German travel posters. And the hat hooks are gone so where's a real Texas gentleman supposed to hang his hat? Food hasn't changed much over the years. The beer garden is still a fun place for a group.

Great food!

By ewachtler |

We have visited this restaurant several times while in Austin for swim meets. Great indoor or outdoor seating and fast service! Large list of great local beers and very good food. We have enjoyed the cheese steak sandwich, burgers, schnitzel, sausage sampler, and homemade mini corn dogs for kids. Great sides as well! We will continue to visit this wonderful place when in town. We even went on a game day, lots of college students watching the game outside and inside and the service was still fantastic. Very laid back and good for families, couples, students and anyone else wanting good food and beer:)

A German Affair

By Atul Raj M |

Great place with friendly staff.... The ambience inside is fabulous.... Gives the true flavor of Germany

Don’t go when there is a game.

By sharrongeg |

We were here at 11:30 am on a Saturday, and figured we would miss the crowd (game was at 6 pm) - but we were wrong. Drinks served in plastic “frat boy” cups and food served as if we were in the stadium. No real utensils…just cheap plastic forks. Unfortunately - about the same fast food quality. Really sad, 2 drinks, a brat and a burger $60 before tip. Cannot recommend.

Beer Garden Texas Style

By JVSibley |

Food was average and selection of bier was fair with a good selection of German biers. The best part is the outside seating with the full brass band playing! Quite a treat for a mild Oct evening! Note: Call ahead, this is a popular place for buy outs (the first night we went there was a buy out by the 'game developers conf'.

Great schnitzel!

By pmpkn219 |

Stopped over for lunch, not a big menu (check out online!), But what they serve is good! Also a very extensive menu of beers, as one might expect from Texas's oldest beer garden. Staff was friendly, we shared a German wurst and a chicken schnitzel plate, both very good. I even liked the side cabbage that came with that schnitzel, and I don't normally like cabbage! There is a lot of construction on SanJacinto between UT and the Capitol, so beware. We walked, so I'm unsure of the parking situation

BBQ

By BevoBurn96 |

Enjoyed their chop beef sandwich and pulled pork. Both were pretty good and there wasn't a line to get in. Fast service on their back patio with beautiful weather.

Thank you Herr Scholz!

By Vanessa d |

This was a must see on out list for the Austin trip. Hubby liked the beer list, and the menu looked good too. The German pretzel is a real German pretzel with delicious mustard and not an oily dough mess that you may find in somewhere like the mall (not naming name, you know who you are). We walked around the biergarten, but ate inside so that we could watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Service was friendly and fast. The food was good, and even the picky kids ate their meals.

Don't eat the food

By Janice V |

You have to go here to see where all the movers and shakers of old Austin drank. The bar is very impressive with it's size and history. The building is amazing. But, if you order the food, expect it to taste like the floors.

Great food, friendly staff

By Jason K |

Brats and kraut was outstanding! Would have been happy with just 2 brats and kraut. Traditional bar food. Brats served on a bun. Great selection of drinks, even St. Arnold's root beer!

Has potential but expensive

By jumpy180 |

Scholtz Garten has potential but on the expensive side. I ordered the KÖNIGSBERGER KOCHKLOPSE which is veal meatballs over spaten, and my wife ordered Weinersnitzel. We also ordered the Bread time as an appetizer. Both our main dishes tasted good, and seemed to be reasonable examples of German dishes, but lacking any bread or reasonable thought at presentation. Because we found out there was no bread served with a main dish before hand, we ordered the "Bread time". The " Bread time was advertised both on the menu and by our waitress as having an "assortment " of breads and meats. When it came out, there was only one type of rye bread and one type of meat. Again presentation was lacking. Also, on the menu, Bread Time was advertised as "market", presumably meaning the content of the tray may be dependent on market availability and a small platter was $5.50 and a large, $10.00. We were charged $19.00 for our very lacking platter. Tasty, but lacking and way over priced. We did not leave hungry. The food served was tasty and a passably reasonable example of German dishes, but not $66.00 worth. I've had just as good and better for less money. The service was reasonable and reasonably prompt. The atmosphere was quite as we went on a Sunday evening. But I would not necessarily recommend the restaurant when in the Austin area.

Went here for dinner and sat

By Jutta Z |

Went here for dinner and sat outside in the pet friendly beer garden. Food was good and tasted very close to German original (Currywurst, Jagerschnitzel, Pretzel). The live music was absolutely enjoyable. Was worth the walk!

It is authentic German.

By Yancy A |

This place is the real deal. We had schnitzel, potato salad, and red cabbage. All home made and just as we remembered it from when we were stationed in Germany. I couldn't resist ordering the giant pretzel. Yep, tasted just like the street vendors' in Nuremberg.

BEST SOFT PRETZEL EVER!!!!

By Import R |

We came just for a pretzel. We heard it was good. It was the BEST pretzel ive ever had. Maybe i just haven’t had many, but this one was amazing. Crusty as expected on the outside, but SOOOOO soft inside. The condiments they provide are good, but really, the pretzel is delicious on its own. And its not over salted. Usually when you get them other places, they are loaded with salt. IM craving another one of these pretzels!

Great place for lunch while touring area museums!

By Michelle L |

My husband and I stopped here for a bite to eat after visiting the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum, before heading to the capital. Great selection of German foods, fast service.

Good beer selection, average food

By kaber03 |

We visited on a night without live music but the patio seems like fun place if busier. The food was good and beer selection was excellent. A good place for families to visit.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff

By Lindsay R |

I was here for a networking event at a seminar. The atmosphere is really great, and so was the food. The staff were all friendly and more than willing to offer beer recommendations. Will definitely come back if I'm in Austin again!

Nice outdoor beer garden

By Mangoroni |

Lots of German beers on tap. We shared a soft warm humongous pretzel with cheese, mustard and herb butter. Nice outside area. Skye was our friendly efficient server.

Great place even for lunch

By jesda |

Back to this restaurant again after a long absent. Still ad good as ever. Nice atmosphere and very friendly service. Plenty of beer to choose from. They also have special daily lunch menu. Like the decor and the toilet doors. Will certainly go back again when visiting Austin.

Good for business trips

By Alex G |

The location is perfect for business trips, very close to government offices.. The price is average. Quality of food is good.

No bad, but could be improved

By Enjoying_Life360 |

The name would impy it's a German beer garden. In reality it is a restuarant that happens to sale a few german beers and a few german food dishes. I ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel and it was okay, but a bit on the greasy side and no pieces of mushroom in the sauce. They aslo serve BBQ and other dishes. I probably wouldn't come back. I am guessing the rely heavily on the UT college crowd who just want a big place to drink beer.

Beer and food...spot on

By Nate080411 |

We came here the day before Thanksgiving for lunch and enjoyed every beer and bite that we had. It is authentic in everyway and the sausage was delightful. I would love to come back here when we get the chance. The beer was really good and their bar inside is very cool. It looks like the city grew around this original location and is a step back in time right in the middle of the city. I highly recommend coming here and getting some food and beer.

Always Friendly and Filling

By Thomas H |

The staff are always friendly. Portions are large and the specials a good value. Been eating here a few times a year for many years and am always happy with the experience.

Nice hangout spot

By Highenuff |

Great atmosphere to network and grab some nice drinks. After the cannibus event we all met up here. A nice patio. The queso and fries were decent little salty as if the cook added salt. The menu wasn't to our liking so we ate elsewhere. Our server she was great.

One Saturday Afternoon at Scholz Garten

By alexac1 |

Excellent ambiance with great selections of Beers and some good German food along with some very good comfort food. A place where couples can sit and enjoy their company... did I mention that it's the oldest restaurant in Texas?

very good German food

By firebear1961 |

A friend took a group of us here for our last night in town, Parking was easy, spaces in front of the store. Service was good and the food was quick and very good.

Awesome and authentic with a Texas flair

By Michael K |

Great German food. Friendly staff and great service. Und goot biers, ya! The Jagerschnitzel is amazing. Not expensive.

Good quick bite

By whoamom |

BBQ baked potato is delicious, you can never go wrong with it. Avoid going right at noon but normally I pretty quick lunch stop.

Scholz beer Garden

By STEVE WILSON |

Been coming here since 1969. The oldest beer garden in Texas. It is also a German restaurant and Sports Bar. A great historic place you need to experience.

Classic German Beer Hall

By RiceWP |

Friends of ours took us to this restaurant for a quick bite to eat and to drink some good German beer. We had a blast while we were here. We enjoyed several appetizers including tacos, bourbon chicken wings, and potato skins. Each one was flavorful and hit the spot. Probably our favorite was the large Bavarian pretzel with dipping sauces. The German beers on tap very good and fresh.

Really fun spot in Austin near the campus

By Valleyblue |

Right near the University of Texas campus, you’ll find a great spot if you’re looking for a great “Austin-y” place for a good sandwich or barbecue. This is a hopping spot that we actually went to twice during our brief stay in Austin. Great barbecue sandwiches, superb service, and a place that’s just a whole lot of fun. It’s a fantastic sports bar that just exudes the southwestern hospitality. We were in town as alumni football fans for our game against UT, so we were wearing “enemy uniforms” so clearly we were from out of town. Our server gave us great advice and tips for navigating game day at UT and what we should check out. Her advice was right on target. Of course, she encouraged us to come back for Scholz’ game day tailgate which we did. We had a great time. We were directed to Scholz Garten by the nice lady at the State Capitol visitor center, and we’re glad she did. If you find yourself in Austin, this is a perfect lunch spot.

Reminded Me of Central Europe

By Alistair R |

Having spent a third of my life in Central Europe, I have a soft spot for a good beer hall/garden, and Scholz Garten ticked every box. Good selection of both locally brewed and German beers, I went with the Furstenberg Black Forest Pils by the litre, and a menu of solid, hearty, peasant fare. In the case of this hearty peasant, I had their German Wurst Plate and the sausages were excellent, as was the sauerkraut, red cabbage, and pretzel rolls. I sat at the bar, and the barman, while busy, kept things ticking over nicely. Recommended for lovers of beer halls, it was like being back in central Europe.

Good place for burgers, etc.

By Craig D |

Their burgers are among the best available in Austin. I would highly recommend Scholz Garden for sure.

Get the pretzel

By blueberry4 |

Stopped by one afternoon for a beer and pretzel, which had been recommended by a friend. It was delicious. What a hidden gem of a restaurant tucked in between buildings in the "new" Austin. I will definitely be coming back here.

Great find!

By SA1 |

Found this place seeking shelter from rain and what a find it was! Sat at the bar and our bartender, Becca, was amazing! She threw out so many great recommendations and history facts on the bar. She’s a doll! And the manager, Brian, was top notch, too. Had steins of beer (great selection) and shared the giant pretzel at Becca’s recommendation. Yummo!! Great place we’d highly recommend!

Great variety of good food

By DaveG873 |

During visit to Austin we went to Scholz Garten for German food as name indicates. We were surprised they also serve Tex-mex and barbecue. We stuck with the German and enjoyed the Wiener schnitzel and jaeger schnitzel which were very good along with sides of red cabbage and German potato salad. The restaurant is in an older building with wooden floors and tables. There is a large beer garden outside with many rows of tables. Speaking of beer, they had a great variety of German American and Texas beers on tap. Good choice for inexpensive meal in Austin

Hope "Frank" figures out Scholz ...

By Charley M |

Staff still great after transition to new lease/restaurant owner. Food OK. Tried wings twice didn't finish order either time (1x not fully cooked)... Gamedays have limited menu ... a restaurant/bar venue wih a ton of big screen TVs in Austin Tx that doesn't serve nachos/salsa (no biggie... but still whiskey tango foxtrot?). It's an unorganized zoo before and after UT home basketball games, paticularly in the main area, IMHO. Between the home fans and visiting fans, the place is pretty crowded before and after the games. Last few times NO TABLE SERVICE.... Stand in long lines, food is cold sometimes if you even can get an order in before game time (and we get there 1 1-1/2 hrs before tipoff)... For the 1st time in more than 26+ yrs. (lenth of time I have had season tickets) we actually have gone someplace else before/after the games ... spoken to quite a few regulars and same thoughts/actions... kind of disappointing... Hope "FRANK" figures it out before baseball season... Can't imagine the scene before last season's football games.... Pretty easy to look up home schedules and make sure enough staff (wait and kitchen) and supplies are on hand... just saying Miss Green Mequite's team that ran Scholz for a long time... I hope "Frank" figures it out soon, really like going Scholz before/after sporting events and lunch when in the area ...

YUMMY

By Chris S |

This place is great! In the Rio Grande Valley we only have one German-ish restaurant, so the fact that they have many very good dishes on the menu. Hubby had the beef tips with mushroom gravy, spaetzel and rotkohl. I had jaegerschnitzel with spaetzel and rotkohl. Both were awesome!! Maisie our server was perfect! She was very personable and knowledgeable.

Delicious !!!!

By Gail S |

My family stopped here in a recommendation for dinner. The staff was friendly and helpful. The beer was cold and fresh. My husband and sin ordered the weinerschnitzel and I got the jagerschnitzel. They were delicious. As an added bonus, there was a fiddlers club meeting there who were playing and they were excellent. It was the cherry on top of the cake for my husband especially. He really enjoyed it. Apparently they meet there in Tuesday's to practice.b it was our good luck to be there that night!

Oldest Sports Bar

By Gloria B |

Awesome to be in the oldest bar in Austin. Very popular for locals and can be crowded at lunch. German style food is offered and the Ruben sandwich was excellent as was the German Burger. A wide selection of beers at a good price.

Surprisingly Good German Food and Beer

By Roy F |

Based on the recommendation of a very friendly and accommodating wait staff, I went with the Wienerschnitzel, German potato salad and red cabbage. An excellent recommendation. I also had a nice dark German beer that hit the spot. My wife went with the pulled pork and she enjoyed it very much. Menu has a variety of dishes that will satisfy most patrons. Didn't try to desserts but they looked very tempting.

The place was great Meet some great friends Beer was out of the world Band was great Food was ok would like to have some other food just not sausage

Eight Friends Travel to TexAS

By Joanne L |

A historic restaurant near the University. This was our first stop after landing in Austin. Most of the group enjoyed Chicken and Waffles, the others bratwurst. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Wish we could have stopped there again, but we were on our way to Waco.

The food is a terrible excuse for German food.

By GermanTexan51 |

The menu is very limited. No Sauerbraten, no Rouladen no Schnitzel. Because they serve overpriced sausage and sauerkraut, they call themselves a German restaurant? It's said they have the best German food around, which may be true considering the dearth of German restaurants in the area. Service is even worse than the food. The so called Biergarten is nothing more than a fenced ally behind the place. Because it's a historic meeting place for the Saengerrunde, it's hyped to be special. It isn't.

A taste of Germany

By nmbiela |

Good sausages. Lots and lots of beer. The Chicken Schnitzel is also worth trying. Old style decor. We would love to go back.

Kick out your customers in the middle of the game!

By Barbie R |

Schulz biergarten makes huge $ as a Texas Longhorn sports bar in the shadow of DKR Memorial Stadium. That's until today when they took our money for 3/4 of the TX vs Kansas game and told us all to leave because of Octoberfest. ??? My calendar still says Sept. No apologies, just get out. This is no way to treat your longtime, hometown, customers.

Fake German restaurant

By Dave J |

Looked forward to eating here as I am of German descent. What a disappointment. No sauerbraten, no schnitzel only brats. Lunch special was chicken and waffles. LMAO. Won't be back here again.

Great break from the Ransom!

By Ann H |

After touring the Ransom library, after many intense hours, we needed a break. Scholtz Garden was a great choice. The philly and pulled pork sandwiches were great. Service is good, and at 1pm while students were on break, it was quiet.

Great Old Austin Tradition!

A favorite Longhorns place since 1866, right near Darrel Royal Stadium. Authentic real deal bar/dining/biergarten. We were happy to be there on a Saturday when there was an away football game, so the place was packed with Longhorn fans during the game, which made it a lot of fun....full of Longhorn Ts, jerseys, etc, and when Texas scored, they did the whole Hook 'Em Horns routine. The full range of Texas/BBQ cuisine with chicken fried steak, 1 to 4 meat BBQ plates, and German cuisine. The prices are really reasonable....like $14 for the four meat plate that is full...bratwurst, spare ribs, really good brisket, and pulled pork among the 8 choices. Plus each entree comes with two sides. The chicken fried steak plate was huge with excellent traditional white gravy. Excellent mac 'n' cheese. Both German and Craft beers on tap in the old bar room. Really nice friendly service in this family owned place. It was a real hoot, and I can't think of a better food value place you will ever find. So Hook 'Em Horns and visit Schulz Garten!

Lunch at Scholz Garten

Awesome German Food. Pretzel was the best I have ever had. Brat sandwiches were spot on. German potato salad was excellent and pecan pie ala mode was the perfect finish to the meal. Parking is a challenge but the food is worth it.

Meh Food

I went here on a recommendation from a docent at the Capitol Visitor's Center. I was told it is an historic place, a movie was filmed here, and politicians frequent it. The building appeared to be landmarked. I ordered a curry wurst and, although I love German food, my meal was not at all tasty. The interior looked kind of dumpy and the service was inattentive. I would not recommend this place.

Historic/Great Atmosphere

Scholz Garten is a treasure oozing character from the moment you see the huge original 1866 bar as you walk in the front door. The Jagerschnitzel and the pulled pork were great as well as the fantastic selection of beers with the Celis White draughts we tried on happy hour for $4.13. They have a 2nd dining area as well as a outdoor beer garden in the back. If we ever get back to Austin, Scholz Garten will certainly be on the top of the list. Beers a little pricy, so 1/2 price happy hour is a good time to visit. Our waiter Fred was exceptional.

Must eat German Food

Best corned beef I’ve ever had! So tender. Amazing potato- sauerkraut balls for an appetizer. Friendly waitstaff. And try the Ayinger celebratory Beer if you like a dark lager. So good.

A University of Texas landmark with good food!

We wandered in here to get out of the heat and were so glad we did. It's a very old building with quite a bit of history attached to it. We ordered the smoked turkey sandwich. It was so good we were tempted to go back the next day for take-out. My nieces were thrilled that peach cobbler was considered a "side". Yummy!

An Austin tradition, and if you can stand smelling smokey all afternoon, go for it. The food is always good and my guess is that the beer is always cold.

Austin Institution for BBQ & Schmoozing

Have eaten here several times over few years -- it's full of history, part of "old time" Austin, and very good food. Everyone should eat here at least once -- just to walk on the hallowed ground of Great BBQ and Austin Political haunt in a historic building.

Nice German pub bar-restaurant not expensive and a friendly atmosphere

By LisandroVoyager |

Nice and informal place for outdoor drinks and lunch or dinner near the Capitol campus. I liked the Currywurst platter coming with 2 types of cabbage, 2 pretzel buns and 3 sausages nicely grilled, a square meal. There is live music on some evenings. The indoors may be noisy. Friendly atmosphere.

Authentic German food and gemutlichkeit

By Kimberly A G |

In operation since 1866, it's the place to see and be seen in downtown Austin, particularly after a UT home game or when the legislature is in session. The food and beer are authentic, and the biergarten out back is a great place to relax. It's a busy place, and the service is brisk and professional. Don't expect anyone to linger at your table but your glass will never be empty. Reasonable prices, casual atmosphere.

Downtown Close to UT and Capitol

This is one of those places if friends were in town and wanted to do the Capitol thing, then this might be a place to go to for a meal. It has a long history in Austin, is loved by many, but many memories have been blurred by the beer. The food is decent with a German touch to the menu. Noon will find the place packed with state workers. With that said, I have been here with people who needed to get back to work, and it was a terribly long wait. I have been here also on a nice fall day and enjoyed sitting outside and taking the time to enjoy ourselves. If you are a visitor on a weekday, I would suggest going after the noon rush and you will enjoy yourself more.
