Southern cuisine in the concrete jungle of Portland

By Qn4lyf |

After being on cruise ship for seven days and short train ride to Portland we were starving for some real and well executed southern food. The beet salad with goat cheese, orange and sunflower seeds. My entree was the 2pc fried chicken with collard greens and refried beans. My cousin started with fried oysters. Her entree was the fried catfish. The server was attentive and very knowledgeable. The lemon cheesecake was just the perfect ending to a great meal. We enjoyed the food so much we went back the next day for brunch. If you are in Portland in the Pearl district, this place is a MUST!

Nice but Over-Hyped, Disappointing Restaurant

By Edward |

We were very interested in trying this place (Screen Door in the Pearl District) during our recent visit to Portland after reading about it, but overall the experience was mixed and fairly disappointing. The place is very attractive inside, and it is clear that they put much effort into the decor and ambience, with a pseudo old-fashioned New Orleans-style aesthetic in the tile, fixtures, sealing, and more. That is very nice, and the place was extremely clean. Service was very good, friendly and efficient. We had a reservation for right when they opened in the morning, we got there a little ahead, and there was already a line that we had to wait in, which was a little concerning since we had a reservation. However, it moved fast once they opened and we were sat down as soon as we got in. However, the food was disappointing. The chicken and waffles as, despite all the fanfare about it, not good at all. The portion was large, but the fried chicken was far too heavily crusted in the fried batter, which was thick and hard and, worst of all, far too heavily seasoned with, as far as I could tell, black pepper. All I could taste was black pepper. The chicken meat was dry. The waffle itself was pretty good, but overall the dish was a failure and got to the point when I was just tired of trying to find a good bite, of which I had none. My wife got the shrimp and grits, which was good, but fairly one-dimensional. The strawberry-and-beet salad was good but the beets were too cold. Fried okra was good but nothing special and certainly no better than what we get at a place in our area. I would give this place no more than a 2 at best if it were solely on the strength of, or of the same quality as, the chicken and waffle, but the other factors overall bring it up to a 3. We might try it when in town again to see if other dishes are better, but I would avoid the chicken and waffle for sure.

Comfort Food!

Great food, great service, and great prices. Order anything with the fried chicken, it's so good!! The location at the Pearl District is super close to Powell's books and to many of the hotels (walking distance from mine).

Run don’t walk to this great brunch place

By tunasf |

Headed here with some hungry teens for an over the top brunch experience on a crisp fall day. COVID restrictions and concerns had us opt for the outdoor setting and it was a bit chilly but a good option for us. Never went inside to check out the vibe.Basically shared all the orders…praline bacon was a huge hit…sweet, salty, a bit of cayenne and crispy..not a morsel left.Chicken and waffles were again mixing the salty, crunchy and sweet and waffles were a surprise..sweet potato! didn’t hear a complaint. The veggie Benedict featured seasonal veggies, perfectly prepared poached eggs, w/ House made Hollandaise, a ginormous English muffin and yummy, creamy cheese grits. The breakfast Sammy was served on that enormous English muffin with egg, sausage patty and those to die for cheese grits. Server was patient and super helpful with the picky eaters in the group. Loved this place coming back next time in PDX. Absolutely astounding and outstanding.

Disappointing

Place was super cold making it hard to enjoy the food. The server was out of sync and the place had an attitude that convey the customer wasn't that important . Overall not great experience . Food was cold as I ate it.

Nice atmosphere, good food

I recommend the banana fosters French toast and pecan bacon. Coffee was good. No Cappuccino. My husband had the chicken and waffle, which he liked, but not really my thing.

Great place

Excellent food served quickly. Great coffee too all within a quaint environment. Friendly service. The line moves quickly and there are a variety of seating options both in and outdoor.

Really Yummy Southern Food In a Loud Environment

By fiamma11 |

This restaurant serves up really yummy southern cuisine with friendly staff. It is trendy; reservations are recommended and if not, expect a wait. The cocktails were also delicious. Fried oysters were well-prepared and the cinnamon rolls were divine. We would return if in the area.

Terrible dining experience for a lot of money and the waiter added a 20% tip not deserved.

Don't bother with this overrated restaurant. We were there for a family birthday dinner but our waiter was more interested in serving only one table with a woman he apparently knew. The food was just okay. I do not recommend it.

Spectacular Screen Door

This is an amazing brunch spot. The southern-inspired food is delicious. Do not pass up the brunch cocktails they are amazing. I loved the atmosphere and the service was great !!

Don’t Shut the Screen Door

Come with an appetite or someone to share with. We came around the end of the morning/afternoon shift and were lucky to get a table without a reservation. I recommend getting one though Service was very good and we were allowed to make a few minor substitutions as we were sharing and wanted to try more things. We would’ve gone back if our schedule would have allowed it

Amazing Blueberry Pancakes!!

By M2cute |

We were looking for a place for lunch when we stumbled across this great restaurant. They say us right away even though it was lunch time and they were busy. I loved the fresh squeezed OJ. And a big glass no juice glasses here. They give you 3 huge pancakes with Lemon curd on top along with Real whipped cream. It's a big meal. Staff was very friendly and attentive.

Active Worms on Meals! Manager Couldn’t Care Less.

By lairdplace |

Went to Screen Door tonight for Father's Day dinner and honestly, super disappointed. It started off rough, our party of 4 showed up 15 mins early for our reservation, and instead of checking us in, the hostess cancelled it. I actually got a cancellation notification on my phone while we were standing right there. Had to bring it to their attention before anyone realized the mistake and got it fixed. No apology either, just a casual "oh weird." But the real deal breaker? My daughter's burger came out with a live worm in it. I wish I was kidding. We told our server immediately and asked to speak to a manager. No manager ever came over. No real concern, was told the item was removed from the bill and acted like it didn't happen. After seeing it actively move around & my daughter almost eating it, no 1 in our party could eat! Even before that, the water cups were left empty for quite awhile before getting refilled & a cup was missed, so had to ask server to return to refill it. Really ruined what was supposed to be a special night. What could have fixed it was having the manager come out to address the table! I've heard good things about this place but after tonight, we won't be back.

Can’t wait to come back

This is such a cute little place with adorable farm house decor. Wonderful soothing music played as we ate giving such a wonderful atmosphere. Food was fantastic I had the chicken and biscuits.

Excellent choice especially if planning to go to Powell Bookstore

By alohatripper |

This is a clean, sleek-looking resto with a long counter. An old-fashion fountain behind the counter would complete the classic diner scene. We came for breakfast and glad we had reservations, for this is an absolute necessity. I think I ordered below my expectations. The breakfast sandwich with a sausage patty and FF was not so tasty but dry and boring. The cranberry juice was refreshing. From here to the "must see" Powell Bookstore was a short but wet stroll away.

Great southern breakfast

By Ben Lomax |

I would not have thought of going to a high end southern restaurant for breakfast but I was wrong! We walked from our hotel but it looked like there was enough parking in the area. It was very busy and we were a party of ten but still got seated quickly. I have had grits before but they had an awesome cheesy grits, very substantive. I had never heard of pork shoulder Benedict so had to have it and it was awesome. I also had some sweet tea that I liked a lot. The rest of our group had several different plates but everyone looked happy. I definitely recommend it!

Great place to eat outside

By AcornOwl |

Three of us had a great dinner here, and even though it was rainy, we stayed dry outside under the vast canopy. Even in a big storm, we think we could be comfortable, especially with all the heaters. We liked the food and the wait staff were extra helpful.

Terrible

By TravelingDad_PTFC |

Drove up from Salem to meet friends for Sunday breakfast. Waited outside for 40 minutes only to be told they would not be opening due to the expected high heat. It is only 84 degrees. A long line down the street of angry, disappointed people.

Inviting lunch spot

Looking for a healthier lunch place. This is the place. Got the Marinated Summer Squash Scramble. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. The space is open and at the same time cozy. Loved the decorations. Friendly wait staff and hostess.

We are coming back

Solid Southern cooking

By TJouer |

We recently ate a weekday dinner at Screen Door with friends. The seating was outdoors. We enjoyed the accommodations, as we arrived early, and the restaurant had already adjusted our reservations to include one more person. For my entree, I had the chicken and waffles. I ordered a side of the red beans and rice, and we had the corn bread for appetizers. Tip: The food is rich, and the servings are large. There are plenty of waffles to share, and you probably do not need more than one chicken breast.

A must stop in when you're visiting Portland

By OnlyMakeYouStronger |

I can’t say enough good things about Screen Door in the Pearl District. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and it’s in such a perfect spot—just a few short blocks away from Powell’s Books, Voodoo Doughnut, and even Slize Pizza, so you can easily make a whole day (or night) of exploring this corner of Portland. But the real star of the show? The fried chicken. I’ve had fried chicken in countless places, but this was truly on another level—the crunch was golden and perfectly seasoned, the meat juicy and flavorful in every bite. Without exaggeration, it’s the finest fried chicken I’ve ever tasted. Pair that with friendly service and the lively energy of the Pearl District, and it’s easy to see why Screen Door has such a loyal following. If you’re visiting Portland, don’t miss it—this is a spot worth going out of your way for.

So Good. Don’t Miss It.

I at at the Eastside location last year and was impressed. I knew I wanted to eat here again when I returned to Portland this year, and the Pearl District location did not disappoint. I’m mostly vegan, and there were options for me. Good options. I had a dish of three sides that came with cornbread also. And I had a specialty cocktail as well. Very tasty, and filling. I do wish they had a vegan version of the collard greens, but I had plenty of terrific food without them. I’d like to tell you about the desserts, but I was too full to have any. I will be eating at the Screen Door Restaurant every time I come to Portland.

Excellent Food in a Walkable Fun Neighborhood

By Amy K |

We loved this place. The menu was eclectic, but the food wasn't complicated. It was delicious southern themed food with a new twist. I had the Fried Green Tomatoes Benedict with Cheesy grits. Hubs had the Southern Fried Chicken and biscuits. Both got Bloody Marys. Everything was perfectly prepared. Staff was friendly and the location is beautiful. Have no complaints. Super happy we visited here. It's in the mid to on the higher side price range.

Definitely a place I will visit again

By Thibsfamily |

We ate here as part of a benefit for a local preschool, which is worth 5 stars on its own. In addition, the meal that I had was creative and used local fish and produce with a Louisiana twist. Everything was delicious. They knew how to make a Sazerac correctly. The fried chicken was even good, a difficult bar to reach. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Great Southern (US) Cooking

By Rakkasan68 |

Crowded, busy, poplar with a modest menu of Southern classic dishes. We dined there twice in our one week visit to Portland. Very good fried oysters and lightly breaded catfish. The gumbo was perfect. I really enjoyed their okra.

Almost. So close, we could taste it...

I recently visited this place on our first visit to Portland, I had read the reviews and I was so excited to go, it sounded like a great place to experience. However I think we got there for an off day, wait was long and felt like the employees were stressing like they'd never been busy before. Which I took with a grain of salt cause I used to work in the restaurant industry. Once we sat down the waitress was very good, was able to make us feel welcomed and she was able to get our drinks really fast. To only forget about us half way through the experience. She took our order and then we waited. and waited and finally our food arrived, it was good for the most part but probably would have been a lot better if it was still hot when we started eating. When we said something about the temperature we got more of a sad look from the waitress like it was out of her control. which I get but really we were paying full price for our food and its not like she was saying sorry we are not doing so good today, let me give you a discount. Im not above paying full price for my food, its not like that, but I know, and you know going out is about the experience. So where the food actually tasted pretty good, even tho it was delivered on the colder side, the atmosphere just didn't match up.

Wow, what a great meal

Loved this location, food and drink. Had a nice bar to wait after arriving early. Terrific side choices. Great service.

creative take on southern food

By Casey L |

Stopped in for breakfast on a Friday morning. My husband and I split black eyed pea fritters with pepper jelly, pork belly benedict and a side of cheesy grits. All were delicious! Service was good, atmosphere is nice, and I can see why it is so popular.

Good southern food

Terrific service, large portions, just really good. Outdoor seating worked, I think inside is pretty loud

Homemade Away From Home

By CT |

My husband and I had brunch and dinner here. There were too many things we wanted to try for 1 sitting. We stumbled across this location when searching for food near our restaurant and while we were eating at another restaurant we overheard another couple raving about this place so we talked to them and they said it was a must try. We did and we were so impressed!! The service is quick, staff friendly and accommodating, food fresh and on point in every way, and quaint, clean, inviting interior. Between brunch and dinner we ordered catfish, shrimp & grits, hush puppies, biscuits, cornbread, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, collard greens, fried chicken dinner, chicken and sweet potato waffles, stormbreaker IPA and Don’t Tell Me What To Do cocktail. Everything was excellent. I am born and raised southern so I know when southern is done right and Screen Door does it proper!!! Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a good homemade meal away from home.

Never been so disguted

By Amelia M |

I Found drug residue in the bathroom after a server came out of the stall sniffing and the manager told me to go f*** my self when there were hairs in my food! I can’t believe how they treat people here! Do not go!

Best fried chicken in town (offering all dark meat options too)

By NWreviews |

This place is a 15 minute walk from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall so we had a dinner here before our show. IT WAS AWESOME!! The fried chicken dinner is out of this world & we were able to ask for all dark meat with is not something you find in restaurants around here; just about everyplace offers only fried chicken breasts. The setting was great and the service outstanding. This was so good, we decided to make this a regular monthly event.

One of best chicken and waffles I have had...

By FoodCritic89 |

The Pearl location is very busy, but turnover is quick. Food is delicious, made to order. Chicken for the chicken and waffles was moist and delicious - a great accomplishment. Portions are large so bring an appetite. Great place for brunch and watching pedestrian traffic.

Great Place For Bruch

By KCinLG |

There was a short line when we arrived around 15 min before opening. Shortly after, there were at least 20 other parties. The place is big and offers indoor and outdoor dining and socially distanced which was nice given the pandemic. Service was fast and I forgot our waiter’s name, but he was a delight. He was very attentive and offered many suggestions. The food is really tasty (see photos), offered large portions and of great quality. Cocktails were delish. I would definitely come back again.

Great Place to Take Your Visitors

By Yuri S |

Screen Door Pearl District is one restaurant where you know you will get a great meal. Cocktails are creative and tasty, and Screen Door has a good selection of beer. Food is delicious, and portions are very generous. Having been born and raised in southern Maryland, I am especially fond of the Southern cuisine here. Mmmm! Greens! The menu is versatile; you can create your own dish by choosing from a nice list of sides. The restaurant is modern and airy. Service is excellent, and diners all seem to be in a fine mood. If you have hungry visitors from out of town, this is the place to take them.
