Perhaps we caught this place on a bad night but the food was average at best. Very little atmosphere and too bright for our liking. Didn’t have the wine we wanted and my wife’s meal contained a bad potato. We certainly won’t be back.

What an enjoyable experience at Sears Fine Foods. I was at the restaurant right at opening time. Was seated efficiently after showing my vaccination card. Ordered a spinach omelet which was prepared, presented and eaten in good order. Attentive, but not intrusive, server. He timed the perfunctory "how are you enjoying your meal sir" inquiry smoothly as I was mid bite.

The food was great and the staff very friendly. It was so good that we went back the next day for breakfast again.

A local friend turned us on to eating breakfast at Sears Fine Foods on Powell Street about 2 blocks uphill from Union Square. The vibe and decor are very unique focused on vintage WW2 posters and decor. Many unique hand crafted recipes including Joanies omelet. It is also fun to see and hear the cable cars on the other side of the big plate glass windows with their distinctive hum and clang. Great jazz playing softly and wonderful, attentive service completes the ambiance.

Service was excellent! Breakfast was good but nothing special for the price. We had eggs, bacon, and toast. I did not like the coffee. Is was so strong that I had to put too much milk in it to make it drinkable then it was too cold. It is a neat little place to eat. Good to try out. It is a small place so tables are close together and it’s very busy.

Restaurant that operates from breakfast to dinner Vintage but nice furnishings We went for dinner. Excellent welcome, served promptly Ate hamburgers, cesar salad and fish and chips, all plentiful, accompanied by 1 coke and a beer Prices are unfortunately average for San Francisco, i.e. $78 excluding tip

We went here for breakfast which was good but not outstanding. It was close to the hotel that we were staying at and we needed to catch a noon time flight. The breakfast was ok as one would expect . Eggs and toast are not difficult to make. Perhaps the pancakes are better, as this is what the restaurant is known for. The coffee was awful and I resent paying $4.50 for a bad cup! This place is shown as one of the better breakfast places in the area, which it is not.

Fantastic experience through and through. The food was great even with a limited menu. Staff was incredibly friendly and the mood was perfect. Glad to support.

Sears Fine Foods is an old traditional eating establishment in SF. We had the grilled salmon with potatoes, green beans, and potatoes along with a beet goat cheese salad. It was delicious and perfectly cooked and served. The decor was from the 1930’s, with old photos and posters from WW2. It reminded me of a place my parents or grandparents would have visited.

Nice spot for lunch at this diner that opened in 1938. We were warmly greeted and seated right away. We were seated by the window, which was appreciated because it gave us the opportunity to people watch. We ordered mimosa which were a very generous size for $12. I ordered the San Francisco sandwich with fries. My husband ordered the Reuben sandwich. My sandwich was delicious. My husband’s was good but it fell apart due to the sogginess from the sauerkraut. Great service!

Food is really good but the service is horrible. Servers were rude and they were angry the whole time.

Cool place, interesting decor, good food, full bar. My fish & chips were perfect and my companion enjoyed her skewered shrimp. Friendly servers and located just off Union Square. Has been there a long time, so they must be doing something right!

Wow.was tired of walking and popped in. .the crab cake here is awesome. Who knew.!! Light, crunch on out side, ) Served on slices red oinios and slice jalapeños and lettuce. Nice little drops of mayo and romoullade sauce. Was on the happy hour special. Should be a regular item!!

Had an excellent breakfast here. I had the beef hash, hash brown and poached egg. My partner had the 18 pancakes with syrup and bacon. Yes you read that right, 18 pancakes!!! Service was quick and friendly and the food great.

Our Lyft driver recommended this place and told us it was a long time family run restaurant with a rich history and quality food. That sounded good to me so we went for breakfast. The food was good. I got the meat eaters omelette with a side of corned beef hash, wife and cousin each got the Benedict and side of chicken sausage and a couple mimosas…maybe a few… Portions were good sized and food was good, though nothing exceptional. I’ll admit I was a bit surprised by the bill of nearly $200 for breakfast, even with the mimosas.

We went here based on a recommendation from my BFF and her husband. Thru said it has a great breakfast and they were right! Now it doesn’t take reservations just to let you know. I think we waited about five minutes before being seated. The staff is very friendly. We ordered our breakfast and were served rather quickly even though the place was busy. Our server was very attentive and would check on us to make sure everything was fine or if we needed anymore coffee. It’s so close to Union Square too. I definitely will eat here again next time I’m in town. The breakfast was delicious!

This restaurant was recommended to us, so we went for breakfast. It was a popular spot as quite busy. Options for breakfast were plentiful and we were served quickly and drinks given to us. Food arrived in good time, presentation of food was also good. Food was hot and very tasty. We had eggs Benedict with toast as side extra and I had a full breakfast with poached eggs. Reasonably priced.

Enjoy delicious dishes in a friendly atmosphere... We ate two delicious fish and chips! The service is very nice

Stopped in for lunch. Just steps north of Union Square. A bustling place with a restaurant side and another side that feels like an authentic diner. Super friendly staff, we were looked after by 3 or 4 different people. We shared a San Franciscan sandwich with chicken and a small apple cranberry salad. Portion size is very generous. They brought extra plates for sharing. Great lunch! Watch out: coffee is $4.50!

This Breakfast spot was recommended by a relative. Great service, tasty food. Simple. Loved the hash browns and corned beef hash.

Read about Sears on several different platforms so we gave it a try and really glad we did. We were a group of 6 we had a bit of a wait in the line outside but it moved quickly. The service was very good and the restaurant was busy on a Sunday morning of Labor Day weekend, the food was served quickly and everyone enjoyed the meals from a veggie omelet, Al’s Special, Sidney Amber’s Special, to eggs Benedict, all well done served hot and more than enough. A good place for a good breakfast to start your day of fun in this great city.

What a find! The atmosphere was fun, a little nostalgic, a little noisy, and the food was great. The waiter, who seemed a bit bothered by having to take my order, said the lobster risotto was a popular choice. I usually don’t order risotto, but I am so glad I did. A big lobster tail on top and fantastic mushroom risotto. I followed up with coconut bread pudding which was also exceptional…very coconutty. The price was affordable and I left feeling like I had a successful visit to San Francisco.

We had our first breakfast in SF here after finding a recommendation on line. We were not disappointed, between us we had eggs Benedict and their signature pancakes, with tea and a bottomless coffee. Everything was excellent and set us up for a long day taking in the sights of the city. The restaurant was buzzy and the staff helpful and friendly. Worth a visit

Hadn't been here in over 30 years and never forgot how good the pancakes were so had to go back when in area. They are known for the pancakes but ordering anything here is good and love the history of this place. Always busy but worth it.

I had dinner with my wife yesterday. Nice historic restaurant in Union Square area. Menu based on typical local dishes and very good food. Fast service and prices in line with the local average. Reservation recommended

I lived in SF for years, even on Powell Street for a while, and I never found this place until last week. I ate almost all my meals here (staying next door) and from their famous silver dollar pancakes to the tasty dinner selections to the creme brulee for dessert, I was impressed with everything I ate. We marveled at how quickly we got our order and at how delicious everything was. I can't wait to eat here again!

Very good and professional service. Chocolate mousse cake was tasty. Espresso was good. I liked the old decor.

A classic spot near Union Square and a cable car stop. Delicious food, great old timey decor. Service was excellent. Often a wait for a table, but worth it. Not expensive for down town San Francisco. The Swedish pancakes with Logan berries rock.

Amazing breakfast, old SF vibe, vintage restaurant decor. Fresh quality food, wonderful food and service. Our go to for breakfast

We visited here as a group of 12 and the welcome was warm and thoughtful. Food was wonderful and the service was consistently above and beyond. We simply couldn’t have asked for more. Our waiter in particular was a highlight as nothing was too much trouble.

Excellent service, spectacular food. We came for breakfast, highly recommended! We ordered the swedish pancakes, delicious! Very good coffee with unlimited refill. Highly recommended.

My partner and I went after a holiday walk through downtown San Francisco. The food was unusually good, and the service responsive and helpful. The furnishings and music were old-style -- pleasant and comfortable. We shared a large cranberry and walnut salad (plenty for two), and both of us ordered pasta. Our server allowed me to substitute pesto sauce for my shellfish linguine. There was ample shrimp, calamari, and muscles, and the sauce was fresh and not overwhelming. Note: It was not crowded at all because of the commercial slow-down in downtown San Francisco. Go and help out. We want to go again next year!

Sears seems unchanged since about 1960, which I mean as a compliment. This is the hearty American cooking PancakesI remember fondly from my middle American childhood, with decor to match. Pancakes take pride of place at breakfast, which should tell you all you need to know.

Excellent choice for dinner until 9 pm and breakfast the burger is delicious and very big the chiken tenders big and delicious as well as the potatoes the clan shodwer also c good taste the unbeatable treatment of Victor suuuu friendly ask for their treatment is very friendly spoke to us in Spanish jazz music family atmosphere and excellent location

We planned a breakfast visit, but ended up going to dinner instead. Great comfort food, fast efficient service with a smile. My husband loved his burger and I had a great chicken linguine. Very tasty desserts too!

The line is repeatedly out the door, yet the time goes by fast. And you'll be shocked at how much space there actually is in this place... can't tell from the outside. My friend had heard of it so we walked from hotel to check it out. Wish I had written sooner so I could remember full details. I do remember having eggs benedict and home fries... the healthy serving of eggs, bacon, sourdough toast and pancakes my friend had (and shared). My biggest suggestion is to go through the picture gallery and get some ideas. I saw the eggs benedict looking like they had a florentine option that I don't remember seeing on the menu (doesn't mean it wasn't there). Going in with a craving sometimes takes the experience up another notch. This place already has plenty of notchs. It'll be on my list next San Fran visit. In fact I'm referring to a friend who's going this month. 2 BURPS UP!!!

A nice looking place with Christmas decorations & music. The waiter Victor I believe very friendly. Crab cakes to start - tasteless. More like potato cakes. Burger ok, bacon on it was precooked as were the grey chips! New York steak!! Don’t order this if you have false teeth! TOUGH. Suggested tip 18%, my tip - serve better food.

Probably needs no more reviews. Atmosphere takes you back to the 30's. Very attentive service. All the ordinary breakfast items including waffles.

Centrally located restaurant with an extensive menu where the portions are large. The treatment is magnificent. In fact, we went to have breakfast with them every day. A 10. Very well decorated place.

We had breakfast here, staff were friendly, food was good, ambience was excellent, highly recommended.

Good food reasonable prices with a good selection. Staff are lovely attentive and helpful. Would recommend and I will be will be back.

Unmissable place for breakfast in Union Square. The pancakes are excellent but the bacon and sausages are extraordinary. We ordered the poached eggs on a Danish muffin which were very good, but adding the bacon was a great addition.

We loved this quaint little restaurant. We had a hamburger, pasta and the crab chowder and salad. The crab chowder is amazing. Fast service and reasonable prices.

Stopped in for dinner - so glad we did! The food was amazing and the staff and atmosphere was great as well! I had the seafood linguine and my husband had the lobster ravioli- both were amazing. You get a much larger serving with the linguine so if you’re hungry I’d go for the linguine! Definitely recommend! The price was not too bad either - bill came to 55$ no drinks or extras.

The restaurant has been around since 1938. The antique stove next to my table rested under campaign posters for FDR and Truman and a poster promoting the Joe Louis Max Schmelling heavyweight championship bout. It was after 10 when I arrived for breakfast, but the restaurant was still very full. From what I could tell, there was a happy mixture of locals and tourists. Service was prompt and pleasant. Coffee (in a clear glass mug) came first, then my spinach omelet (I had them exclude the cream cheese), hash browns and toast. I am tempted to go back for those 17 Swedish pancakes. There is an old time family owned feel to Sears, a familiar comfort (nostalgia?) absent from most modern restaurants.

This spot is a San Francisco institution, like Tadich Grill. Whenever we're in the city, we stop by to get two bags of the Swedish pancake mix for $22. My wife makes the best mini pancakes using this mix. Since the change in ownership decades ago, we don't dine in anymore. It's not the same. No more queue out the door into the curb. TG, the pancake mix is still the same.

The portions are huge, so you leave full. And the food is good. But the prices are pretty high for breakfast. $20+ a plate, and definitely adds up with things like $5 for strawberries. Good place but its not fancy or making complex plates.

We tried this restaurant for breakfast it was really busy and there was a wait to get a table. Service was slow food okay but not as good as elsewhere we have been this week in the city. Be careful when paying I had left a cash tip as had heard that some restaurants add the tip to the bill and add a larger sum if not clear when you pay. This has worked perfect all week until today. We gave a cash tip of 30$ Clearly wrote on the signed bill cash tip and the total to be taken from the Currency card. and have just realised that they also took an additional $27.61 as well so breakfast costed us a total of $197.00 for 4 people. Two things we had ordered didn’t arrive not very impressed and won’t be going back. They just seem to want to turn the tables round and don’t care about providing a good service and charge you extra as they think as a tourist you wonted notice!

Loved the mushroom risotto! Still thinking about it. Lots of options and good for families with picky eaters, like mine. Very friendly staff!

While staying in the Union Square area of San Francisco, my wife and I dined at Sears Fine Foods. We have eaten here before and always fine it consistently good. We had lunch one day and breakfast another. The grilled cheese with shrimp on sour dough was delicious, as well as the pecan waffles and the eggs benedict. Sears serves, breakfast, lunch and dinner and has full bar service. For a very good meal, try Sears Fine Foods.

We were going to shop at Willams and Sonoma’s at Union Square in San Francisco, but needed to eat breakfast beforehand. So we settled on Sear’s Fine Food. As soon as we walked you could tell you were in a good spot. Its lavish interior was designed with nostalgic charm, furniture and Mosaic Hexagon floor tiles, nice throwback. The menu was old school, but it had the classics and a great variety, which made it even better. I ordered the Al’s breakfast special, and my wife had their Eggs Florentine with Hollandaise sauce. Both entrees were delicious. The service was excellent, and the coffee refills kept coming. Iconic breakfast spot that shouldn’t be overlooked. I highly recommended Sears Fine Foods. Thanks Tripsters, Chef Edwin Padilla Good Food…Good Vibes

Great service and food. Seated at a great table in the window. Food was fast and delicious. Glad we came in by chance. Would go again.

Had great reviews, well deserved. Had the best corned beef hash ever. Will be returning here! :-). Highly recommend.

We had the chance to have breakfast here on our last day and it was so worth it! The silver dollar pancakes they're famous for definitely live up to the hype! The coffee was excellent and service was friendly and efficient.

Found this place late at night looking for an open restaurant to celebrate our kids’ birthday. Loved this 80+ year restaurant a block away from union square. Service was friendly and food was great! The waiters sang happy birthday… A true SF institution.

Authentic American restaurant, old fashioned interesting decor Good selection of choices on the menu Quick service and pleasant Staff We enjoyed our visit

A staple for San Francisco for us. We are a little nostalgic about them but the service is always good and the helpings are generous. It’s right off union square so you can fuel up for a day of shopping. We shared an omelette with bacon and sausage. Delicious.

The staff were great, and the food was good and plentiful. The decor felt a little tired, couldn’t decide if it was attempting to be kitschy. However the main issue for scoring higher was the price - just felt too high for what was on offer.

Went for Sunday breakfast. Short line when we got there (approx 11am), longer line when we left (12:30). More than meets the eye. They also have downstairs seating and waiters seem to do just as good a job of getting food to you hot from kitchen upstairs. Really enjoyed smoked salmon Benedict.

I recently ate breakfast togo here. I highly recommend the pancakes, sausage, and hash browns. I high recommend coming early or making reservations. The line was out the door when I arrived at 730. I placed an order over the phone and it was ready within 10 minutes as stated. This is a great place if you want quality takeout without paying over priced hotel breakfast. Overall, I will definitely dine in person if you aren’t short on time.

This place is a throwback to the early days of San Francisco. The decor just added to the ambience of our dining experience…so much to look at and admire. The music fit perfectly to the ambiance. I had the steak and it was tender and delicious. They have an extensive wine list. We ordered a bottle of moscato ….. delicious. The staff was so accommodating as well. I so recommend you trying this establishment!

I came for breakfast around 8 am on a Monday. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed the mini pancake with syrup. There was a small health charge in the bill which I didn't see at the other restaurants I went to when in the city. The menu is extensive with lots of options.

Had breakfast and an evening snack here. Friendly efficient service and tasty food - has a 60's vibe so how much you enjoy the place depends on your love of formica. Food good if not 'fine'.

Had blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs. Eggs were good. Blueberry pancakes pretty generic. Not worth. $30 but is right near Union Square. Server was nice but didn’t stop by to refill water or check if I needed anything.

I went several times. If you are visiting San Francisco, Sears is a must. The Bloody Marys are lovely. Al's Breakfast includes homemade hash, which might be the very best that I've ever tried. Also includes 9 of those li'l pancakes. Great service keeps the coffee and water flowing.

Recommended by the cable car driver as we hurtled by. What a nice surprise for breakfast !!! Lovely surroundings and great Ambience, with good quality food and excellent service. Really worth a visit.

Long waiting lines, but worth the wait. Food and service were great. Would highly recommend it before going out to see the sights n the city.

Great service, great food, didn’t disappoint Great value - highly recommend, food was quick to arrive but met all expectations. Staff looked after us well and part of the experience

We had just arrived in Union Square and noticed this restaurant around the corner from our hotel. So glad we went…..great service, food and very reasonable.

We had our breakfast here one day due to close proximity to our hotel. A little pricey for the serving size they give. Food wasn't "wow". I had the Denver omelette, my Aunt had the salmon benedict, and my daughter had the yoghurt parfait. Overall, really small servings.

My wife and I had breakfast here as we were staying at a hotel around the corner. Love the history of the place and the breakfast was very good.

Very quick service and delicious food! Highly recommend. We ordered both pancakes and egg muffin with salmon

We visited twice, once for breakfast and once for dinner. The food was great for both, but dinner service not as good. Lovely old building, so well worth a visit.

The restaurant is located next door to the Chancellor Hotel. We at dinner and breakfast there. I had the lobster ravioli and Ceasar salad for dinner. There was a delay getting our salads but our main course came quickly. Both were wonderful. Our breakfast the next morning tasted great. The servers, with both meals, were very friendly. Well worth the visit. Great prices too.

My husband and I from Canada and my sister and her family from the UK met up in San Francisco and had many meals together. Our dinner at Sears Fine Foods was by far our favourite. We all thought our meals were excellent! A really great restaurant. Wish we lived closer!

We stayed there 3x breakfast during our stay. There are delicious omelets and Eggs Benedict. The service is fast and friendly. It opens at 06:30, so it is well suited for early risers.

Excellent breakfast! The wait staff was the best we experienced during our stay in SFO. Our family of 5 was quickly seated and happy with our meals. Highly recommend this place.

I chose this place after reading the poor reviews of another diner one block away (starts with the letter L). I ate here at Sears for 2 breakfasts and enjoyed it. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, food came quickly and was fresh and the price is not bad. I'd come back here next time I visit the city.

Thank goodness this place was open on Independence Day. The food and service were both very good. I had the lobster risotto and my wife had the crab chowder and the crab cakes. Both were wonderful. Will definitely go back.

I was seated relatively quickly and the person seating me asked me if I wanted a drink and gave me my menu. All good. My actual waiter left some to be desired. He took my order and never spoke to me again until he came by to take away my plates. I needed a refill on my water but I asked him at that point since he never came by. He didn’t ask me if I wanted anything else and put down my check. The food was fine, nothing special.

Cool restaurant. The waiters were somewhat stressed but understanding as there was full restaurant. Good Bbq burger and cream brulee for dessert. Recommended!

Ate breakfast and dinner here--loved this place, very old school with the white hexagonal tiles on the floor, companionable feel, a fairly big room, warm and easygoing. Breakfast was great--the Swedish pancakes yummy, the place full at 10 am. Dinner at 8 was quieter, the pasta was exceptionally good, chewy, they make it right. Love the warmth and comfort of these old places.

My sister and I were there for lunch today. I had a short stack of pancakes with 100% maple syrup. The pancakes were delicious! The service was very good!

Friendly restaurant with retro interior. Great food-entrees, appetizers, dessert-at a reasonable price. Salmon, pasta, shrimp, pancakes-everything tasted great and everyone enjoyed their food.

We can to Sears because of the history. The food has good presentation but almost no taste. The Swedish pancake were fluffy but tasteless. The toast had more flavor. The toast was well cooked but again flavorless. Come for the experience but not the food.

Sears Fine Foods. Super in every way! My daughter and I went there for Fathers Day. My food was top-notch! I had a Filet Mignon, done to perfection. Mashed Potatoes and Green Beans, perfect as well! My daughter had a fish dish. I will show it in the photo below. To end our trip to San Francisco, this was an exquisite way to round out our five days. SUPER!

I try to go to Sears every time I’m in San Francisco. I’ve been coming here since 1997. It remains a favorite. The Swedish pancakes and cornbeef hash are consistently tasty and the coffee is exceptional. Awesome waitstaff. Eat here!

Very nice (museum style) and good restaurant. Complete map of dishes. Professional and friendly staff. Jazz music

Ate here whilst staying in the area. My partner and I both had burgers and were impressed. The service is efficient if not overly friendly, but we had no complaints. If you want a simple meal with no fuss, this is the place.

From the street you hear the west coast jazz, the clinking of cutlery on crockery and the buzz of conversation and laughter. The first impression is friendly and welcoming. As a family of four we ate breakfast here for three days and each day was excellent. The omelettes are clearly a specialty and are delicious as are the pancakes (with whatever combination!) Also the granola and oatmeal options with fruit (fresh or dried or both!) provide a lighter and healthier option and are equally delicious. We didn’t have an evening meal but did drink a glass of wine at the bar and could see that the plates of food looked appetising…. Plates almost always left the tables empty! Breakfast - highly recommended

Went here for breakfast and also evening meal. Lovely old fashioned American atmosphere, friendly staff and could not fault the food. A good choice for breakfast, pancakes, waffles, omelettes, eggs etc, and also plenty of choice for evening meals .

We came in for a quick breakfast and ordered an omelette, a portion of their "famous Swedish pancakes", two coffees and two orange juices. The waiter was disengaged and barely spoke to us. The omelette tasted ok, the juice was really good and the pancakes not good at all. We are Swedish and we cannot agree that those pancakes were particularly Swedish. It can most simply be described as a thicker and drier type of "plättar". Finally, we couldn't believe they were serious when they came with the bill - it was around $73 (including 18% tip) Crazy expensive and not even good. I would unfortunately never recommend this place to anyone.

Great service & good food, nice old style decor, if you like Jazz this is the place to go for an enjoyable evening meal. Within walking distance from hotels close to Sutter St.

We went to Sears on Powell St a few times when we visited San Francisco in August. The menu was great, offering light meals and big serves for those who were not so hungry and those who were really hungry. Even then the serves sometimes beat us. The team here are old style polite, gentlemanly and helpful without being obtrusive. They certainly live up to their legendary style, history and atmosphere of their 70 plus years in business. The menu caters for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was a perfect stop over for us as we stayed just up from Union Square park at the fantastic Cartwright Hotel and could just walk down for breakfast, lunch or dinner after sightseeing. Tables are spacious and separated from each other with enough room to have a conversation and feel like you have some privacy. Their front door looks out at 439 Powell Street and the famous Powell St Cable Car stops nearby. Famous for their carefully guarded family pancake recipe we thought we might try some but there was no way we could fit these delicious looking treats in. Maybe next visit.

At this unassuming medium-sized place a few steps away from Union Square, my expectations were not high going in. Service was exceedingly efficient, however, and when my omelette and hash browns arrived, I was very pleasantly surprised. They were perfect.

Our family really enjoyed having breakfast in this beautiful restaurant with its lovely atmosphere. It was established in 1938, and the decor and music reflect their history. The food was delicious, and the service was great!

A coworker and I were in town for a conference. While the hotel offered a buffet breakfast, we felt we could get a better breakfast from a local restaurant for the same or less money. Just down from the hotel we were staying at was Sears Fine Food and the sign mentioned breakfast. I looked it up and it has been there since 1938 and the food looked great. So we decided to eat there for breakfast. They have all of the normal breakfast food items, plus Swedish pancakes. However, my coworker and I both decided to get the Eggs Benedict with hashbrowns. Our food came out fairly quickly, Maybe 10 minutes although were were there fairly early on a Sunday morning. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked and the English muffins were crispy. This was probably the best Eggs Benedict I have ever eaten. The coffee was really good too. My coworker typically only likes Starbucks, but he said he really enjoyed the coffee at this restaurant.

Great iconic old restaurant! Food was delicious and reasonably priced and service was excellent. Had the 18 Swedish pancakes and the eggs Benedict and both were very good

For a true American breakfast experience we elected to visit this restaurant and the whole event was perfectly handled by the establishment. The waiter was most welcoming and attentive at all times, the breakfast food was delicious (hash browns exceptional) and the coffee hot and not too strong. As a UK couple exploring San Francisco we left the restaurant well fed and watered and feeling very fulfilled by the experience.

Institution on Powell is in the heart of downtown, super nice places for a hearty breakfast before leaving in a drip. Like everywhere, it's not given, but the service is brilliantly smiling

Great place for breakfast and you need to try the world famous pancakes! The eggs were also good. The place tends to get crowded, so come early to avoid the queues. Great location as well next to Union square We paid around 50 to 60 usd for 3

We had a lovely lunch at Sears Fine Foods in San Francisco. The food was delicious but it didn't suit my wife's choices. The server was charming and served us quickly as we were in a hurry. The decor is average. It is close to the Hyatt Union Square on Powell Street.

This place was recommended by our hotel. There was a short line out front, so it had to be good. Indeed it was a treat. Great food, service and ambiance. I would recommend it. The bloody mary and our brunch were awesome.

We walked in for a late Thursday morning breakfast as I had read about the history of Sears and thought it might be worth a try. We were greeted and seated straight away - at the back of a packed restaurant- mainly regulars and US tourists at a guess. Service was perfect - fast, attentive without being in your face, pleasant and efficient. Jazz playing gently didn’t seem at all out of place or cheesy :) Don’t be put off by the brown chairs and Formica tables - all part of the charm! The eggs florentine were perfect - fresh spinach not overdone and a lovely hash brown. Was happy to have the Hollandaise on the side. The eggs Benedict also looked good. The fresh sliced oranges and strawberries were also a refreshing delight, washed down with bottomless coffee. Would definitely come back to try the famous pancakes!

Pleasantly surprised by the delicious quickly-served food and the price of the bill! In the middle of SF near Union Square. Amazing. Service is good too despite the crowd. Fantastic. Highly recommended.

Really interesting restaurant with lots of antiques and bric a brac. Worth a visit to just to see inside. The service was very friendly and Vitor Ma was excellent. We were also looked after by a young lady whose partner works there and at Perrys. good food.

This place is packed, and I doesn’t do reservations (at least for breakfast, as that is when we went) so arrive early. But the line does move pretty quickly. They are famous for the Swedish pancakes which were really good. The ambiance is friendly, the food was fast and the portions were hearty. It’s an old, established institution. It’s more of a diner than a restaurant.

Came here for breakfast as we were staying in the hotel next door. We were there at 7am and a few tables were already full which is a good sign! Had the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. HUGE portions and so tasty! My friend had french toast and said it was delicious. Really appreciated the coffee refills too! Would recommend.

With an excellent location near Union Square in San Francisco, Sears Fine Food has been serving customers for decades. The decorations take you back to the early and mid-1900's. The menu is comprehensive and feature a special breakfast Swedish pancake. Service was good. Our server was Martha who has been a server all of her life and many years at this location. There were many locals here, which is always a good sign to me. Martha took great care of us, always checking our coffee, making short visits to touch base, checking quality and asking for input. She is what a great server/waitress should be. She made our meal fun, so we went back again!! I suggest you give Sears a try.

Got into the restaurant when it was crowded, as it was one of the few places open on New Year’s Day. Nevertheless, I was immediately seated at the bar. Great atmosphere: authentic place, nothing like the anonymous chains. Staff both friendly and professional. Food ok.

We were in San Francisco for about a week and we enjoyed breakfast and dinner at Sears. Staff was always nice especially our server Amit ;). Breakfast and Dinner were always delicious. Sears is a small atmospheric restaurant with history definitely recommend eating there :)

Great food and service. Wonderful sourdough bread French toast which I love so much. The steak was so good with the choice of wine, perfection of our diner and brunch at Sear ….. the atmosphere of the restaurant makes me feel so in love and peace ….. Beautiful place and Beautiful personals of course The foods also importantly Fabulous. Thank you to keep your standard Up …. Keep it hard work … will visit you more when we will be in SF

Great breakfast spot! We walked here from the Financial District after watching a YouTuber eat here... and it did not disappoint. Nice morning walk, the atmosphere is on point and the breakfast was amazing! Do yourself a favor and try the tiny pancakes!

We chose this restaurant that inspired us. The atmosphere is rather retro with old photos hanging on the walls. The food is well cooked. We tasted grilled shrimp and octopus and a glass of excellent Pinot Noir "La Crema". Pleasant dinner

My wife and I were shopping at Sam’s across the street and asked for a recommendation for breakfast/lunch. We were suggested to go to Sears by the sales lady. I first thought she meant the defunct retail store. When she took me to a window and showed me the restaurant it appeared unassuming. We went there. It is an old restaurant with antique decor, (probably due to its history). Tile floors and a lot of wood interior. All was clean, including the bathroom! We have a rule that if the restaurant bathroom is clean so must be the kitchen. As for the food, My wife ordered breakfast, eggs over medium hard, hash browns toast and coffee. All was cooked to perfection. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was piping hot and coating light and crispy. Fries done perfectly. Coleslaw was just ok.That is how fish and chips should be. Server was attentive and prompt. Would recommend and would return.

DH and I ducked in for lunch after a City Guides tour of "Hitchcock's San Francisco". The vegetable plate (green beans, asparagus, potatoes and spinach) was fine. Is it even fair to rate a restaurant on a vegetable plate?? Service was good. It is always nice to dine in a spacious, clean restaurant in San Francisco...and Sears Fine Foods met that criteria. While we probably will not re-visit, if you are near Union Square and hungry---we would not caution you against it. We probably should have trusted our gut and ordered the Swedish pancakes.

Cool old restaurant. Food average. Service was great. Close to Union Square and cable car. Food was delivered quickly.

We went to Sears based on the Trip Advisor reviews and we weren't disappointed! The traditional, old school style is charming and the waiting staff were lovely and friendly! We had the Cioppino (traditional fish stew) which earns you the honour of wearing a lovely "crab" bib...good fun and keeps your clothes clean! The stew was beautiful with huge amounts of fish :-) We went on a Wednesday night around 7pm and didn't need to book. It got busier around 8pm, which gave it a really good atmosphere without being too noisy or overcrowded. If you're in SF and have a spare evening - give it a go!

A very well decorated place that with a full restaurant setting. Came here early for breakfast, very good service. Had an enjoyable breakfast. Food and coffee was good. Nice atmosphere.

Great breakfast and great service. Its a busy spot for breakfast. I just don't know if it was worth the price and I know food prices have gone up but breakfast for 2 for 50 dollars is a bit pricey to go there every day

Good and fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection. Excellent burger and very tasty fish&chips. Well organized kitchen and friendly staff

Absolutely delicious dinner and great service. We came in on a chilly night and the restaurant was packed but we were able to be seated within 5 minutes. Crab cakes were amazing and fresh, we then had the lobster risotto and the cioppino - wow. Both were fantastic, plenty of seafood in the cioppino and it was cooked perfectly. Fast friendly service. Pricing was not over the top but what you would expect in San Francisco. We’ve been to the city many times and never knew this place was here, but staying at the Westin this time it was just up the street. We’ll be back for sure!

The place was cute with lots of antiques around. The breakfast was great even though the service was a little slow.

I made a recent trip to Sears which is right on Powell St with an old timey vibe inside. The food is fantastic. Steak and Eggs is a good value. And so is Al's Special which comes with house-made hash and those lil delicious pancakes. The Bloody Mary is the best I've ever had. Service is attentive. This is my go to breakfast joint!

Nice quirky restaurant close to Union Square. Plenty of menu choices. The crab chowder was very tasty and comes in two sizes. Service fast and friendly.

We were recommended to go by my uncle who ate there 40 years ago 🤣. It lived up to its name: it was fine, not outstanding, just fine. We had a little difficulty getting the waiter to understand our order and I noticed someone on another table who was having a similar experience.

No nonsense restaurant with traditional good home cooked food. Very good burger and pure crispy fries . Homemade crème brûlée very tasteful . Quiet ambiance with jazzy music . Good value

The best breakfast in Union Square Hearty variety very well cooked We've been there a lot. Fast and very pleasant staff

Pretty decent food in classical Americana decorations. Fairly priced, quick and friendly service and good location. Standard fare but made well enough. Not bad, not the best, perfectly (a little above) average.

Looking for some good diner style food at a San Francisco mainstay restaurant? Then this is the spot! I was here YEARS ago, and my friends and I popped in for a late lunch. Service was attentive, the menu extensive and they have that old diner vibe but sort of in an upscale way given they serve drinks. Sure, you will pay more than you would normally for a salad or sandwich but if you are in this area, you are likely touristing. The Swedish pancakes are a must if you are a pancake fan, everything else on the menu we ordered tasted fresh/great.

Came here for breakfast with family and we were not disappointed. Seated straight away. The food was delicious and service was excellent. Highly recommend.

A very good time. Hyper smiling welcome and varied menu that immediately puts in the American atmosphere. The place is very nicely decorated. Attentive service and very friendly. Pancakes to fall, like eggs and bacon! To try

We've eaten at Sears many times over the past 50 years - always a good choice - especially now that so few of the 'good old places' of San Francisco remain. Good food in a wonderful and friendly space. Love those little pancakes! Go early and avoid the line!

Tasty food but nothing especially amazing about it. The eggs benny was good, but the portions are small for the price. Service was fine. My husband liked that ingredients are folded into the eggs instead of dumped in the middle of his omelet.

Everything here was delicious and the service was great. Great coffee! The best part of the meal was the pecan waffle. Lots of big pecan pieces, fluffy with just enough crunch. A must try. Great historic atmosphere.

Heard from others that this place was good, so we tried it, got there at 7am, we had a long day and early start, food was great, staff were lovely, would definitely recommend this place fir breakfast.

The very best diner!! Pancakes crispy, bacon, jugs of maple syrup.. Endless coffee.. Loved every second! Sit at the bar counter for a proper authentic American Diner experience.

What a cute vibrant place right in the middle of Union Square. I hear there are long lines for breakfast, but I went at 2:00 pm so I was seated immediately. I started with a cup of the daily soup, chicken and rice. Loaded with cubed chicken and very tasty. I had the California Club. They were very generous with the turkey bacon and avocado and it was served on a fresh croissant - not just regular ol toasted bread. Very nice! They are know for their Swedish pancakes so I ordered some to go - looking forward to my morning breakfast. (Or midnight snack). It is a bit pricey, but I’m from Texas. It’s hard to beat our cost of living. $7 soup, $15 sandwich, $16 pancakes with bacon. I would definitely recommend Sears and I would absolutely come back. I prefer local unique establishments as opposed to the typical chain places. Perfect place for a low key outing.

Fantastic meal. Service was excellent. My favourite food place in San Fran. Great atmosphere. Would return, if I could

I had breakfast here a couple of days on a recent trip to San Francisco. This is an old restaurant that has been in the same location for many years. I thought the food was good and the service was very quick and friendly.

Had been recommended to go here by someone who went a few years back. Had the waffle, eggs Benedict and a corned beef sandwich. Eggs were not runny, which was a bit of a reflection of the overall standard. It was ok, nothing special and there was nothing that would make me want to hurry back given the prices. Service was again, ok- nothing to should out about.

Sounds good, but disappointing. Not a restaurant, more a diner. Formica tables, plastic menus, no atmosphere or intimacy. Food was OK, but nowhere near the "fine food" in their name. Service was OK.

We hadn’t eaten at Sears since the 1980s, when it was a big deal for breakfast. We were surprised at the variety and quality, mostly seafood. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals of crab cakes and two salads, apple cranberry and beet, goat cheese and hazelnuts. The waiter was very attentive and nice.

Don't judge the outside area, inside Sears is decorated like a 1940's diner. The breakfasts and lunches are 10+. Th house specialty is Swedish pancakes and big juicy strips of bacon with loads of syrup. 18 little pancakes. Don't miss it. At lunch, the hamburgers are flame broiled, juicy and big. All portions are large and the prices very reasonable, especially for San Francisco. The service is very professional and helpful. At first, I didn't want to go in because of the neighborhood, but wow, it is like you are in a time capsule.

We ate breakfast here most days of our stay and dinner on at least 3 occasions. All meals were excellent and very tasty. It really is a lovely place to eat. Very relaxed and inviting. All the staff are lovely people and cannot do enough for you. Special mention for Vitore who seemed to be our waiter whenever we ate dinner...what a lovely man. Thankyou.

An amazing experience, well worth it if visiting SF, the place was buzzing, friendly efficient service, food was exceptional with lots of it.

Location, typical setting, very nice and professional service, menu (copious breakfast, varied menu), Standard Award for Union Square

Lived her now 32 years and hadn't been here in well over 10 years, Met friends for breakfast. I love the old San Francisco vibe this place evokes. It's very popular with tourists and locals alike. It's always hopping and often one must wait to get a seat. On this day, Sat. @ 10:30, we were seated to our table quite promptly. I heard the pancakes were the bomb and my friends were right. Another friend had ham and eggs w/an English Muffin. Unfortunately they brought Bacon and white toast. But they corrected the meat quickly and brought a side of ham @ N/C. She didn't bother w/the toast. None of us are a fan of their hash browns, which I see many folks have written about. Sad they don't read their own reviews and try something else for hash browns. I would go back and do recommend all give this place a try, at least once.

I walked alone a morning to this place for breakfast and I am pleased with it. Clean place, very good service, the food is really good, served in good sized portions, and the price according to these characteristics. I skipped lunch. That is how full I felt after I left the place and during part of the day. Full and satisfied.

The atmosphere alone in this restaurant should draw you in - it is classic old time San Francisco inside with very cool period features. It was very clean and the staff were fast and friendly. The food came out quickly; I had a combo plate breakfast with pancakes, eggs, sausage and bacon. EVERYTHING from the coffee to the pancakes was delicious! The scrambled eggs were creamy, fresh and delicious and the sausage was not fatty, large, and flavourful. The pancakes were incredible as well. The entire place had a great vibe and the food was not gimmicky - just delicious!

Good food, lacking a bit of atmosphere. The server was efficient and the food came writhing a good time. The price was reasonable and close to Union square for transport link and shopping🙂

In a city renowned for its culinary tapestry, one is often left yearning for an experience that transcends the mere satisfaction of the palate—a moment imbued with charm, history, and, dare I say, prophecy. Enter Sears Fine Food, nestled on Powell Street in the very heart of San Francisco, a veritable institution of hearty fare and warm welcomes since 1938. The journey to this storied eatery began weeks earlier at an unexpected venue: the Korean Consulate. In the midst of diplomatic discussions, I found myself conversing with a charismatic gentleman—the proprietor of Sears Fine Food himself. With the enthusiasm of someone eager to share a hidden treasure, he regaled me with stories of the restaurant’s legacy, its famed Swedish pancakes, and the generations of diners who had made it their own. As the conversation turned personal, he produced two crisp, brand-new $2.00 bills from his pocket and handed them to my young sons, their wide-eyed amazement betraying a rare treat. “Always listen to your parents,” he advised them solemnly, before turning to me with a cryptic smile. “And remember—when they marry, they will each have two children.” This mix of warmth, wisdom, and uncanny foresight lingered in my mind as we walked through the doors of Sears Fine Food one bright afternoon. The restaurant’s interior feels like stepping into a time capsule: polished wood, vintage photographs, and a bustling yet welcoming energy. It is a place that belongs to everyone and no one—a shared treasure of the city. The famed 18 Swedish pancakes proved every bit as delightful as their reputation suggested, light and golden with a syrup so rich it might as well be bottled memory. My coffee was bold, unpretentious, and endlessly refilled, the kind of coffee that fortifies both conversation and reflection. Yet it was the people—the staff, the other diners, and the memory of that encounter at the consulate—that made the visit truly unforgettable. As my sons marveled at their breakfast, still clutching their $2.00 bills like sacred artifacts, I couldn’t help but reflect on the way moments of connection seem to find you when you least expect them. Sears Fine Food, much like its proprietor, offers more than just a meal—it serves up wisdom, history, and a sense of belonging. For those seeking not only sustenance but also a touch of magic in San Francisco, Sears Fine Food delivers in spades. Come for the pancakes, stay for the stories, and perhaps leave with a prophecy of your own. Five stars and a toast to the $2.00 bill.

Delicious! We had the french toast, some fruits, cranberry juice and the famous swedish pancakes. The staff were friendly, the service was quick and everything was very tasty! We can defenitely recommend this place for breakfast!

We loved this place so much, we ate breakfast there 3 days in a row. The atmosphere is authentically old-school. The service was very friendly and efficient and the food was delicious! We tried the Denver omelette, eggs Benedict, pancakes, and waffles. Everything we had was tasty and a terrific value.

Nice place. Nothing particularly fancy, but the food was wholesome and the service pleasant and not too expensive.

I chose this restaurant based on the reviews. I liked that it was an older family restaurant, it had a charm to it that you don’t see anymore. Nicely decorated, professional staff and quick service. My son had the Swedish pancakes and the rest of us had the usual breakfast food. Everything was tasty, a little pricey. But overall San Francisco is a little pricey every where. Not sure what the hype was about with the Swedish pancakes. They were good, tasted like a homemade pancake that I make at home. Felt a little rushed if I’m being honest. It was a weekend, and it’s a small place, so they probably need to move people along. Overall, I would definitely go back here for breakfast.

Best breakfast in San Francisco. Fair prices and huge portion. With delicate taste. We will for sure come here again.

Dined solo and loved my dinner. Each course was every bit as good as the preceding one. The crab chowder and mussels were delish. The salad was perfection. Chunks of blue cheese, nice dressing, and lettuce that was very fresh, with no little bits of brown pieces. I shall return

We spent our first morning in San Francisco looking around, unsuccessfully, for a decent breakfast around Fisherman’s Wharf. On the second morning we took a cable car to Union Square and checked out Trip Advisor’s best rated restaurant Sears Fine Foods. We were not disappointed. We had a brilliant breakfast with impeccable service while chilling in the beautiful surroundings. The restaurant was almost full but we didn’t have to wait long the food and the coffee top ups. It was so good we went back every opportunity we had.

We stayed at the chancellor hotel next door and we ended up having dinner and a couple of breakfasts here. Food was awesome and breakfast food was even better! Portions are massive, price is pretty good considering it’s just off union square and great friendly and helpful staff. It’s dog friendly to!

We lived in San Francisco for several years and come back on a regular basis. Somehow we had never tired Sears. What a great surprise. Our dinners were outstanding (steak for me and shrimp for my wife). The service was excellent and they were careful about checking that everyone who came in had proof of vaccination. They are famous for breakfasts which is what we plan on trying next time!

the experience was great, the service was awesome and kind, the food like the burgers and the breakfast with salmon had a great quality and taste, it very clean too.

We met with friends and had a good time here. I ordered veggie omelette, very berry and waffle. Food was ok, I enjoyed my very berry cup a lot.

We had breakfast here a couple of times whilst in San Fran and absolutely loved it. The service was excellent, lots of choice on the menu and the food was delicious. A big thank you to Martha who was a fabulous waitress, real service with a smile. This place can get busy so get there early to avoid the queue.
Great food with great service
Amazing breakfast, every part of it done perfectly and a great atmosphere by the bar. Great service and feels like a must visit on a busy day in SanFran
