I liked this place!

By FromPortlandOregon |

I happened to drive by this little place and gave it a try. The waitress was pretty aloof, and frankly I was expecting a so-so lunch - but I was wrong! It was great. I would have given them 5 stars except the wat staff was pretty lame. Hats off to the cooks though!

Fantastic Chinese (American)

By Andrew |

We had a great meal at this popular spot. Bit of a wait but well worth it. The service was a bit muddled but it all worked out. Gigantic potstickers, 1 is more than enough per person. Sweet and Sour Pork was superb. The Shandong Chicken also great. Not a "authentic" chinese dining experience but the sort of Americanized chinese I grew up with, updated and prepared with high quality ingredients. Good tea as well! I can't wait to go back.

Great Happy Hour

By StBoone |

Shangdong in NE Portland, OR was visited while on a recent visit to family. I arrived at about 4:30p for happy hour and ordered the Chilean Rock Crab Bao which was tasty and well seasoned- very good. The Pork Soup Shao Loon Bao had not enough soup (should burst in your mouth) and was a little stringy- but still had good flavor. The House Wantons were deep fried perfectly and a nice treat. Pot Stickers were well prepared and very good. The Spring Roll was worth the taste but not great. My waitress mixed the seasoning sauces at the table and served (and prepared) a nice pepper infused vodka martini. I want this place to open in Alameda, CA!! wu can= lunch

Yummy lunch with friends, but 2 issues

By Dawn N |

We really enjoy Shandong's handmade noodles, hadn't visited in a year, so with friends passing through town, suggested a visit there on a sunny day. Shandong is in a convenient location close to I-84, but be aware that parking can be a challenge. There is a large parking lot adjacent, which you MAY NOT use (it's for the community center across the street). My suggestion is that you look for a side street NORTH of the restaurant for the best option. Anyway, we arrived before our friends, were seated, and began perusing the menu. I visited one of the 2 restrooms and found it to be generally grungy, with a strong urine smell - ick! I then checked out the other and found it to be less smelly, but still grungy. :( Disappointing, since we were the first customers of the day. I informed the host of my findings, but at the end of the meal it was obvious that nothing had been addressed in that restroom to my dismay (not wanting our friends to have a negative impression of the restaurant.) Our service and meal was very good. We had the House Wontons, Judy's Noodles, Dry Sautéed Green Beans, and Sesame Chicken all of which were well flavored and not overly spicy. (On the table is soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil so that one can adjust seasonings to their liking.) We had plenty of food for the 4 of us and were not made to feel rushed even though the place filled up as the lunch hour progressed. It was a little difficult to hear our conversation as the restaurant gets quite noisy when full. So: Pros - good food, good service Cons - restrooms, parking, noise Will we return? Yes, but I'll be contacting them about the restrooms before then. Don't mean to harp on this issue, but it's a deal breaker for me...

Lip smacking Chinese !

By tinss |

Tired from driving around the full day , hunger was at its peak as we arrived at Portland .Going by fellow TA reviews , we picked Shandong to be our dinner venue. Finally a place which serves delicious but authentic Chinese. Portions are mighty and quality is worth a mention. We were 2 hungry adults and a toddler & still had leftovers. Service is efficient, quick and they respond well. A must have food venue if Chinese is on your mind.

Great Chinese Food with a Difference

By Gtex78 |

When you want Chinese food, but with a chance for something a little different this is the place to go in Portland. The menu stresses Northern Chinese food, especially noodles that you may not be used to from many non-Chinese (by location not cuisine) restaurants. We were introduced to this restaurant by family members that live in Portland. They like the place as do a lot or Portland residents. I went for the Mongolian Beef. I tasted the spicy dry fried beef too. I can recommend both. We will be visiting Portland and the Shandong in the future..

They Couldn't Care Less About Their Customers

By John R |

We go to Shandong mainly for the shrimp dumplings as they remind us of the dumplings we had at the Hunan Restaurant while we lived in San Francisco. We do order other dishes, but have never found them that interesting - well cooked, but not interesting. We go maybe 2 - 3 times a year. We don't go more as the food is not spicy and the service is not great for the prices that we pay. What really turns us off though is the attitude of the staff - they could care less about what you may have asked for. If it requires the kitchen to deviate just a bit, it ain't happening. Tonight was the latest case in point and, the last. We called for take-out and asked for two orders of the dumplings and kung pao prawns. My wife spoke with gentleman on the phone and explained we would like the kung pao, 10 to 100 times hotter than any american would eat. We asked if they would chop up the peppers so the heat is part of the dish. Of course the gentleman answered, of course he would pass it along to the chef. Your order for above dishes and a side of rice is $33.00. We'll see you in 25 minutes, We popped in about 10 minutes later hoping to get a Tsing Tao while we waited for our order. Wait, is that our order waiting for us? Why yes, it is. Why did you tell us 25 minutes good wait person. Oh, it's Chinese New Year and with all of the orders, it could take that long. Wouldn't our food be cold if we came in 15 minutes after it's ready? Oh, let me reply by staring at you blankly. You know we ordered this extra spicy, way hotter than any American would eat. Well, they make it a little spicier. Should I get some oil or siracha for you? No thanks, we'll just take our food and the memories of in your face attitude and leave. The dumplings were good as always, the Kung Pao was bland but there were a lot of whole peppers just what we didn't ask for. We called to ask if they had misunderstood us. No, they hadn't; they just couldn't care less.

Potstickers and noodles!!!

By Esther S |

A couple at an adjoining table recommended the noodles and potstickers so my hubby and I took their advice. So glad we did. Judy's Noodles was the name of the dish. Scrumptious. Big long noodles with soooo much flavor. Came with broccoli and either spinach or kale. It had some jalapenos that I picked out because I'm not fond of spicy things but the flavor was still excellent and not overly spicy. The potstickers were on the 'Happy Hour" menu. Four HUGE potstickers at filled us up. Then when the server came over she said she would comp the potstickers because it took so long to serve the noodles! What a surprise. We didn't think we'd waited overlong long, but what a nice gesture. Over al.... a great place to eat!

Tasty dinner

By Kathleen L |

Following family Thanksgiving Day celebrations we decided we were in desperate need of some good Chinese food and we were not disappointed. We decided to try the Dragons in the Garden and the Wonton soup. Our only disappointment was the wontons in the wonton soup were way too chewy; they were not cooked. The broth was great the vegetables were great the other soup was awesome but the wontons were undercooked. We also had some appetizers... we had the shrimp dumplings and the springrolls, both of which were excellent and then for our main courses we had Shanghai noodles with shrimp and Vegetable Trio which was outstanding with it's very garliky, delicious sauce. We started with some of their signature cocktails which were very creative and delicious, so we strongly recommend this restaurant! Large portions with reasonable prices and the service was fantastic!!

Delicious Food & Pkeasant Staff

By Wanderer265083 |

First time at Shandong on recent visit to Portland. Tried late evening Happy Hour menu (8-9:30m) and was pleased with my two choices (spring rolls and shrimp dumplings). Beer, wine,m and spirits available. Staff was quite attentive and genuinely nice.

enjoyable

By Brandon_Rossi |

with a group of 5, we had 6 dishes total.....5 dishes were pretty good, with the lone exception being the lo mein....the dry braised green beans TASTED good but were hardly dry.....Mongolian beef was good but one only got the spicy bites when eating the whole chilies, as the rest of the sauce had no bite......the pork belly noodle soup was really inventive and tasty but had enough homemade noodles for two dishes......the lemon chicken was surprisingly sweet......the hunan shredded pork was by far the winner with a perfect balance of heat, sauce, meat, and veggies.....that dish for sure was top notch.....id go back again to try a couple other things or at least get a dish of that hunan pork for just myself....stuck on the rating though.....this place is better than average for sure, but not quite VERY good....its just good....solid...well priced...enjoyable

Great food!

By javagirl29 |

I thought the food here was great and I was impressed by the quality, portions and prices. We were a group of 5 adults for dinner with a bottle of wine plus some beer and we spend $140 including the tip. The menu choices were good (plus a nice vegan selection) and the food was well prepared, fresh and made to order. The portions were large enough that there were plenty of leftovers. For an average of $10 per entree I couldn't believe how generous the portions were. The "soups" were actually a large dish of meat and vegetables in a delicious broth. The fried tofu and sautéed brussels sprouts (according to one of our group) were the best she had ever eaten. Everyone was pleased. According to one reviewer, this is not really authentic Chinese food. Who cares? It's delicious anyway.

Very tasty Chinese

By tatliturk |

This smart restaurant with an open kitchen was our destination one night. Very smart choice as the hot and sour soup was excellent with just the right amount of vinegar and spice. The rest of our selections were super tasting as well. A keeper for sure

Best Hot & Sour Soup I've ever had

By David S |

Ok, Portland finally has a great Chinese food restaurant!!! Food is good, not greasy, solid Chinese food with a good selection on the menu. Service is friendly. Hot and sour soup is soooooooooooooooo good. Highly recommend. I go during off hours to avoid the wait FYI. Enjoy

Love

By Whitney P |

Owner greater us as soon as we walked in and visited with us during our meal. Awesome food! So many options we had never tried before. Best Chinese I have had their noodles are awesome and I have been craving them since we were there! Definitely worth it if you are in Portland. Definitely reasonably priced and portions are HUGE!

Best Chinese Food I've Had for Years

By Stuart S |

What a find (with the help of our hotel's front desk)! Though it is very noisy, the food choices, preparations, presentations and taste were outstanding. Everything had a very fresh cooked look and taste. We went "off-script" of our usual Chinese food fare and took the waiter's suggestions - and we were delighted that we did. Our only disappointment was that we were leaving Portland the next morning for the airport and that we couldn't take "doggie bags" of our left overs.

YUMMY!!!

By MrsCresswell |

My husband and I visited Shandong on a recent trip to Portland. The food was simply amazing...so very tasty, and such quick and friendly service. This was the second time my husband ate at Shandong this trip, and my first. We'd definitely go back!

Great noodles and excellent service

By Robert C |

I came across this restaurant randomly and was terrifically impressed by the quality of the noodles and the friendly service. Judy's noodles is a great dish and a warm bowl of comfort on a rainy day.

Wonderful Northern Chinese food

By trawlerdoxie |

I'm in love! I adore Asian food & have had trouble finding a place that I really like. This is it. The noodles are homemade. The beef dishes are very tender. The fried won ton & dumplings to die for. There were 4 of us & we ordered 3 dishes plus the two apps - plenty of food but we were looking for quality not quantity. We got both.

Mediocre Meal

By Muselulu |

I tried out this restaurant for a late lunch when I was home for the holidays. I live in Shanghai, China so I can say I'm quite particular with Chinese food. I read rave reviews regarding this establishment and thought I'd give this a try. I was sorely disappointed. There was nothing special about the complimentary hot and sour soup. The squid was covered in a thick cardboard like crust blanketed with spicy sour sauce. The rice that accompanied the dish was a mixture of mushiness and hard rice. We also ordered the chilean crab xiao long bao. The innards was dry and pasty without much "xian wei," the fresh taste. The home special hand pulled noodles was one of the worst handmade noodles I've ever had. The black bean sauce had no depth in its flavor. It was oily mixed with large slabs of tasteless, not too fresh beef. The noodles were limp and had no chew to it. Sigh. They only nice thing is the teapot is quite fancy. Parking is inconvenient. I won't return.

This is NOT an authentic chinese cuisine

By Xiaofei Y |

I'm a native Chinese growing up in China. I saw high reviews on this Shandong restaurant and decided to go for a try. There are almost no Chinese diners in this place and the Chinese cuisines they serve are westernized. I would not consider them Chinese food. Poor decision on my part to try this place, and the reviews here are likely, if I have to guess, from non-native Chinese guests.

Northern Chinese cuisine in the Hollywood District

By Stephen M |

The Shandong is located in what appears to be a house remodeled for restaurant use. Parking is a challenge because the commodious adjacent parking lot is strictly for Community Center users with a permit in their car window and malefactors' vehicles will be towed. The restaurant has an excellent and varied menu of authentic Szechuwan, Beijing and Hunan Chinese dishes. The hot-and-sour soup was delightful and kicked up with fresh-ground Szechuwan peppercorns. I had the cherry pork, which was excellent. One of my companions had the dry-fried asparagus which she fully enjoyed. The service was quick and friendly. Oddly, three of our main courses were delivered at the same time while the fourth was brought to the table about five minutes later. This place is just a quick detour away from the I-5 freeway (via I-84) so it is easy to stop for lunch or dinner when passing through Portland.

How it should be

By Gerald S |

This is how Chinese food should be! Fresh with lots of flavours & passion. It's nice to see Portland & the area, finally getting some proper Chinese restaurants!! It's really sad that some people only know terrible Chinese food & still think it's good. If you can get a table you won't be disappointed. Well done!!

They make their own fresh noodles!

By northstarvalerie |

Seriously. And they're delicious! This was a last minute choice to eat and the friends who came up with the idea had no clue about the noodles. When I asked the server whether the noodles were fresh, I wasn't expecting to learn they're made on site when you order! Wonderful attentive service too. And I had enough leftovers for two more meals! As another review said, watch where you park.

Hot & Sour soup was good, all others were average!

By PaulEBvanc |

Hot & Sour soup was good, all others were average. Yahoo had this restaurant a " must try ". That writer needs to get out more! The crab hum bao very dry: not the original xiao long bao with broth inside.

Great Food Service Not So Great

By Clyde B |

Read many great reviews of this restaurant. We found the food to be wonderful, however the service was less than great. We were with friends, one persons food arrived at once, the rest of us waited 10 minutes for our food. We would return .

Authentic!

By Larry H |

We are lucky to have Shandong in our neighborhood! The food here is the most authentic Chinese food I have had in the U.S. I've been to China 35 times and spend 5 weeks a year enjoying true Chinese cuisine. This is as close as it gets! This is not your "quasi-Chinese" food that you normally get in the states! The menu is varied and everything is delicious! What a treat!

The best Noodles ever!

By NWguy219 |

We love Shandong and absolutely love the Noodles! The Tan Tan Noodles are amazing and feed plenty. I always bring leftovers to go and have at least two lunches. For an appetizer, we always grab the Pan Pacific Won-Tons. Fantastic! We probably visit at least 2 times a month and it could be more. The only complaint I have ever had was with the 'Manager' or woman who does the scheduling. Often, we will get take out and eat an app and a drink at the bar while waiting. Multiple times we have found her with paperwork and Starbuck's coffee sprawled over the bar and it seems to be putting her "out" when we need room. We have also heard her chastising employees in the presence of customers. Save ALL of this for the back room...I don't want to know what is going on behind the scenes, nor do I want to fight a staff member over a seat at the bar. All of the other staff have been more than accommodating and we always enjoy our servers when we dine in! We highly recommend this place!

great chinese food

By Teresa M |

we wanted to try this place for dinner with friends...we began with a tsingdao lager and the rest of the group had a sapporo lager...next we ordered the spring rolls...i had the white prawns with broccoli and ordered brown rice too...my partner had the red curry prawn noodles...our friends had the lemon chicken and sweet/sour pork..they had potstickers too...everything was delicious...our server was exceptional..he was funny too...great place...

Good food and service

By emmalea3 |

We enjoyed our meal here. The chow mein was excellent and the service was fantastic. Our waiter was very informative and helpful. He helped with special requests and they kept checking back with us. I would recommend this place.

Less than expected

By Swissabroad |

This restaurant had good reviews and we both like Chinese food. My guest was a gluten-intolerant Vegan. On the plus side, he had a lot of items to chose from. Many of the Vegan dishes could be changed to gluten-free. I am a non-apologetic omnivore. We both liked the flavors of the dishes. The handmade noodles the size of Udon noodles but very dense and heavy. This is also true for the pot stickers. The tofu dishes came loaded with big portions of tofu, good tofu, but not the type the menu had listed. The orange with the fortune cookies was a nice touch. The service was friendly but very slow.

It was fine....

By Elzbieta G |

That is about all I can say about it. I went with several friends and not a one made mention of the food. Not good, not bad, not otherwise. And in my group if there are no food comments that is unusual. Service was attentive. Noise level was high...lots of hard surfaces. Prices were fine for the location. Parking is problematic.

Shandong Do

By Marcus L |

Shandong is a cute little restaurant in the Hollywood District of Portland. The first thing to know is parking is difficult here. The little parking lot next to the restaurant is for the community center, so be prepared to hunt for a space like it's a Playstation 5 or and Xbox Series X. The menu has plenty of choices, and the food ranges from "Hey, that's really good," to, "Well...I shouldn't have ordered that." The potstickers were huge and very tasty, but the fried wontons were small and, though crisp, were missing the large fillings the potstickers had. My order of "Beef and Broccoli" was good and plentiful, but the Chow Mein tasted more of pepper than anything, and the lemon chicken wasn't very lemony. Our party of six left almost three full plates of food on the table because the taste wasn't great. That said, the appetizers and the fried rice were very good and very well done. One member of our party was unable to come, and the restaurant prepared a vegetarian version of their fried rice for him at no extra cost. If you're in the Hollywood District and looking for Chinese food, Shandong is the way to go.

Pretty good.

By Ashlandbuck |

Good martinis. When my second cocktail arrived in a cracked glass and I pointed this out to the waitress, she quickly replaced my drink and brought an extra shot of vodka. I loved the crispy pot stickers. Noodles have nice texture and delicate flavor. Waitress was brusque and harried. No Chinese patrons, all white people.

Mongolian soy curls were amazing

By Sarah D |

Seriously. Saucy, salty, flavorful - it was one of the best alternative dishes I have had in a long time. I want to go back and have them gain, but also want to try the other vegan/vegetarian dishes. A delicious dilemma!

What a pleasant suprise!!!

By bruceklein |

Stopped by on a whim on a rainy Wednesday night and found the place packed with "regulars." No tables but quickly seated at the bar and enjoyed an outstanding hot and sour soup followed by a very tasty mongolian beef and the best shrimp fried rice we ever had. Also the jasmine green tea was unbelievably good! Great, friendly and efficient staff and excellent value.

Good food Yum

By Robgregg |

looking for some good Chinese food on a Sunday and found it here. vegetarian Judy's noodles very good, cherry pork yummy and Mongolian beef real good.

My favorite Chinese restaurant in Portland.

By Karen K |

They serve upper-scale northern Chinese food that is just amazing. They have the best sizzling rice soup I've ever eaten. We also had their Shandong shrimp and Shandong beef, which are their own creations you can't get anywhere else. Their fried rice is almost the best I've ever eaten.

Finally, Excellent Hot and Sour soup

By VantuckyBen |

Finally, Excellent Hot and Sour soup. I've been searching for good hot and sour soup since I left Anchorage. Bam! Here it is and is the best I've ever had. Judy and I have eaten here a few times now and find the "simple looking" dishes the best. Shandong chicken, White Prawns, Lemon Pepper prawns all kick butt with easy well executed simple and pure tastes. The Shandong chicken has fermented black beans as one of the main components and they completely Make the dish. Now I crave for it.

Packed on a Wed. Nite = A Desirable Place to Eat

By calmtnman |

Took family & friends (party of 8) for dinner on a Wed.for my first visit.to Shandong. Had to wait quite a while to be seated, but once in place it was a great experience. Service was very good, everyone seemed to like their choices. I particularly liked the Pork Belly Fried Rice and the Red Curry Prawn Noodles.Healthy portions at reasonable prices. The oddest thing is that I did not see one Asian-looking person either among the diners or the waitstaff. but a peek inn the kitchen showed an almost 100% Asian food preparation staff. No matter, a good time was had by all.

Best dumplings in town

By Lostelement |

There is not a dish here that isn't absolutely worth trying! The beef special is killer, the dumplings are phenomenal! The pot stickers aren't the best but they are huge. I will def go back here!

Decent Chinese Food

By Milestogo007 |

I was craving Chinese food and decided to go to Shandong. I have been here probably a half dozen times over the last few years. I ordered the Honey Dry Fried Chicken with rice and it was good. Service was a little off on this visit. They brought me a pot of tea, but nothing to pour it in. I was wondering if they wanted me to be like Aldo Ray in the film "Welcome to Hard Times" where he pulls a dirty onion out of the ground and starts eating it, then just drinks straight from the hot coffee pot. Fortunately they brought me a cup after I pointed out I had no way of drinking the tea. Another thing that was off is they told me they were completely out of appetizers and something else I can't remember at the moment. It seemed strange for a Friday. Anyhow the food was fine and I did not find the price to be all that expensive in comparison to other restaurants.

Fast and tasty

By Siewby |

My husband, his brother, and I were in the Portland area looking for a good restaurant for dinner on a Saturday evening. Our first choice had an hour wait, so we decided to opt for Shandong. No wait, restaurant about half full, so we were concerned. I ordered the Shandong Beef (flank steak coated in a thick brown sauce on a bed of cabbage), husband had the dry fried chicken (their version of sweet n sour chicken), and brother in law got gwai wer noodles (housemade ramen looking noodles w/ a bbq tomato sauce, meat, and veggies). All of us enjoyed our food. It came out fast and was tasty- good flavors and good portions, enough for breakfast the next day but not overwhelming. The house tea (jasmine green) was delicious as well, perfect temperature. Ambiance felt clean and comfortable, and prices were reasonable (post tip total for 3 dinners was ~$40). Oh, and my water glass was never empty, big plus for that.

Big disappointment

By heathgirly |

The food quality was not there. It tasted reheated. No sauces included so ask if you want potsticker or soy sauce. I would avoided them-they were really oily. Sweet and sour pork was a huge disappointment. The meat was barely there. Barely any sauce. Big portions but low quality.

Dinner, or we had hoped to eat

By Ann M |

We showed up at around 5:45pm to an almost empty restaurant. When our server approached us we ordered appetizers and our dinner. Other patrons filled the restaurant and they all received their food and drinks. We did not. We finally inquired about or drinks and they brought one wine, on the house yet no food. Then one of our appetizers arrived (after asking). The other appetizer 10 minutes later. When we got up from the table to ask why we had not gotten our entrees, since all the tables around us had already gotten their food, they only made excuses. After about an hour, we left and walked down the street to Sweet Basil Thai. Sweet Basil Thai was great.

Definitely worth a visit

By carole l |

We visit Portland often and have sampled many of the ubiquitous Asian restaurants. I give Shandong high ratings because of food quality and taste, service and ambiance. Often, Portland Asian means a location in a sketchy neighborhood and minimal ambiance. Not so with Shandong as the decor is contemporary and pleasant. The service was very good. Every dish we ordered was very good, such as very tasty and substantial pan fried dumplings, great dry fried asparagus, and a red curry crab noodle dish. I appreciate the use of fresh ingredients that definitely came through in the taste of the dishes we ordered.

Spicy dishes and Mild dishes

By Claudiagenna |

I ordered something different each time. Chicken Curry in a clay pot, was my choice this time. Filled with lots of veggies, and a mild curry sauce. You must order your rice as a side, which is required with this dish. Normally a waiting time on Friday nights, but not long. Parking is not good. There is this huge lot their, but it belongs to the Gym, so don't dare park there. Pretty much, street parking only. Service is very good, dishes brought to the table very quickly, even though they were busy. A very simple touch at the end, a wedge of an orange, great ending to a good meal.

We'll be back!

By JanieandWes |

Looking for someplace new for early supper (5:30pm), we spotted the brightly lit sign for SHANDONG. We had heard someone say the food was good, but knew nothing more. The menu was easy to understand. Logical meat categories of Chicken, Pork, Beef and Seafood had ample selections of either spicy or not. We had Shandong Shrimp and Lemon Chicken. They both exceeded our hopes, and we even had some to take home. Fantastic service staff welcomed us as 'newcomers' and helped with our selecting items we both appreciated. Oh, yes, don't miss the Pot Stickers! Downside? Only the parking situation; it is very limited and the nearby health club tows if you park in THEIR spaces.

Many excellent vegetarian options and great soup

By Sitewatcher |

The dry sauteed asparagus was a nice change to the green beans I order at other restaurants. Wilted spinach and garlic was perfectly cooked (not slimy!) The braised eggplant was tasty and not too hot as requested. The sizzling rice soup with chicken & shrimp was just the dish for a cold and rainy evening. Clear and light broth; they substituted tofu for the chicken and shrimp. It was delicious. 3 of us shared a large portion. The only dish we didn't care for was the cherry tofu- the sauce was cloyingly sweet and the fried tofu was really chewy. It isn't inexpensive, but was fairly pricedANd there was plenty of food. Downsides: The parking is just awful, and the line was long. It took 25 minutes to be seated even though we arrived early for our reservation.

Shandong Is Oregon's Number 1 Chinese Restaurant

By Randy K |

Judy's Noodles were excellent! Dumplings were superb! Soup was included and very tasty. Service was prompt and courteous. Prices were very reasonable. Portions were satisfactory.

good food, poor service

By CraigMcPherson |

Wow. I had eaten at Shandong previously, and the food was good. What stood out tonight was the appallingly arrogant service from 'Frank,' who declared himself the only waiter in the restaurant. Ordering a bottle of wine, we expected to taste the wine before pouring. 'Frank' declared that, the only reason to taste the wine before serving was for wines which have a cork and that, because this was a screwtop wine, tasting the wine was not appropriate, as if screwtop guaranteed quality. We were a party of seven and asked for potstickers. Their serving is 6 pot stickers, and 'Frank' immediately ordered up two sets of six, refusing to acknowledge the possibility of adding one pot sticker to the order. We requested another server, but "Frank" made it clear that he was the authority and the only Server, He had a rationale for every position which made him 'right' and us 'wrong.' "Frank" should go to hospitality school or better yet, resign his position as Arrogant Server, who discolors an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. Thanks to "Frank," I will always remember his arrogance, condescension, and ignorance of hospitality, however, it is unlikely I will revisit Shangong after his treatment and this experience.

Excellent Food!

By RobCapt |

Hot and sour soup, shrimp dumplings, mu shiu pork, cashew chicken, northern fried rice, shrimp and tofu hot pot and Tsingtao beer. We were obviously in the mood for something familiar and comfortable, but each dish was the absolute best. The service was efficient and friendly. Great food! Great value!

Busy Chinese

By Malice6 |

Following lots of positive reviews we made reservations and arrived to find a full restaurant with a line of waiting customers. Our table was not ready but we got one within 20 minutes. The noise level was over the top and it was impossible to conduct a conversation. The menu is varied and interesting but I am suspicious when I see no Asian diners or servers in a "Chinese" eatery. We were pleasantly surprised when dinner was served. Despite a capacity crowd service was fast and the staff hustled. Our Nori Seaweed Soup was outstanding and a nice cross between Japanese and Chinese. The rest of our courses were fairly standard renditions of Mu Shu Pork, Shitake Mushrooms with Baby Bok Choy, and shrimp in lobster sauce. Satisfying but not really outstanding. It is a popular Portland family restaurant and they handle crowds well. Not a place for a quiet romantic date.

Good

By k s |

We came here for the dumplings. We got the shrimp dumplings and the house wontons. I was not blown away, they were pretty good, the sauce for the shrimp dumplings was far too salty for me to enjoy. We also got the guaiwer noodles, which had a great flavor.

Best Chinese food in Portland

By Susanlvg |

This place was packed, but we were seated quickly. Even with the crowd, we felt like we got lots of attention and great service. As vegetarians, I highly recommend the dry sauteed green beans with soy curls. YUM. They do a wonderful jobs with all their tofu and soy curl dishes.

Authentic Chinese Food

By Larry H |

I’m a regular visitor to China on business (45 times), so I know good Chinese food. What you normally find in this country is “Chinese-style” or just plain “fake” Chinese food. Nothing holds a candle to the quality and tastiness of real Chinese food in China! So we were pleasantly surprised to find Shandong here in Portland. While not quite as good as what we find in China, it is very, very close! Shandong is definitely the best Chinese food you will find in Portland!

Not to be missed while in Portland...

By SMorovich |

This place is one of two spots I make sure to recommend to friends when they visit Portland or Vancouver. Excellent flavors and decent prices.

Better than most

By jackwidely |

Saying it is Northern Chinese makes you expect something different than your typical carryout Chinese spots. And it is. We only have a few dishes but all were surprisingly fresh and not over sauced or loaded with mystery things. Eggplant is simple and plentiful enough for 4 people to share for sure- we took some home. Pieces aren't mushy and sauce is rich but not overwhelming. Chicken in clay pot was actually sweet and simple- sauce and vegetables lightly tossed and potted. down right healthy! Spring rolls and wings were good but typical. happy hour pricing has them at just $4 so there you go! full bar, ok wines. NOTE-- surrounded by huge parking lot that YOU CANNOT USE. suggest you park NORTH of broadway on side streets. south of there is a mess of interstate & entrance ramp chaos. Uber or bike is even better

Something has gone wrong here since my last visit Very Americanized food, lackluster ingredients, just not good at all A terrible clay pot, not served in one, and rubbery shrimp in a white sauce w no flavor… While our last visit was three years ago… Downhill! GREAT service, however! Caring waiter on top of it!!

Outstanding!

By Steve M |

Try the Shandong Beef or Chicken. Really tasty, this place was a terrific find for us. The staff is always helpful with food allergy issues. One of my PDX favs.

I'LL BE BACK

By Renee A |

The service and atmosphere were great. The food was very good. I just like a little more spice. They did have hot oil and other seasonings on the table which was a plus.

Horrible

By Rat P |

Horrible. Basically the worst food I've ever had (Well, aside from Trader Joes dried green beans,of course.)

Based on some reviews, we specifically were looking for more!

By HenryW |

We had high hopes for Shandong, based on reviews, but our selection of dishes, with one exception, proved average or below. So, dish by dish, the complementary house version of egg drop soup was OK, but we wish it had been hot&sour soup as was previously offered. The veggie filled pot stickers were a big disappointment, as the tofu filling designed to replicate meat was without any discernible taste, and the texture was dry and monotonous. Where is the vegetable crunch? The house version of hot&sour soup is a hot, sweet, and sour soup, not bad, in itself, but a poor cousin of what we consider good hot&sour soup. Mu Shu chicken was served with what seemed to be rather heavy flour tortillas. The filling was, in my opinion, was soggy, lacking in flavor, over-cooked, and again without a fresh vegetable crunch. One exception in the meal, a house fusion dish, was the Pork Belly Mapo Tofu. It was flavorful and multi-textured, and was less than perfect only in the fact that some of the pieces of pork belly had tough and chewy portions. When we were offered white or brown rice with the Pork Belly Mapo Tofu, the server failed to mention that brown rice was a $2.00 upcharge. When we complained, our excellent server removed it from the bill graciously. While we came at lunchtime, we ordered from the dinner menu to get the dishes we wanted. Price wise, we thought the dinner menu was reasonable, and the lunch prices just a bit expensive.

Excellent Chinese food!

By 2lross |

We had a great dinner at Shandong, the food is very interesting and the service was very good. The portions are generous, we took more food home than we ate at dinner. It made a great lunch the next day, the pot stickers are huge, they are a meal on their own. We would recommend Shandong to anyone, it is very busy, go early.

hearty noodles

By DoctorM |

Shandong is a modest Northern Chinese restaurant with no parking. So expect to hunt for a space in their busy neighborhood. The food ranges from very good to leaden. My lover's beef, snow peas, and "spicy sauce' was delicious and she didn't think the sauce was too spicy. My order of "Judy's noodles" featured the long, thick, and chewy homemade noodles. My bowl even came with scissors to make eating them more manageable. In Italy, these would be called "priest stranglers". We made the unfortunate choice of ordering steamed shrimp dumplings as an appetizer. The handmade dumplings were made with the same heavy dough as the noodles and filled with a salty ground shrimp and vegetable mix. We left half of them uneaten on the plate. Certainly worth revisiting for lunch when in the Hollywood district of Portland.

Get there early

By Dave E |

This place is always full - so you know it has the best Chinese in Portland. Get there early enough to be ahead of the crowd and get the 5 PM happy hour prices. About the time happy hour is over there will be a long wait for either a table or takeout. Pot stickers and Spring rolls are inexpensive and great coupled with some ginger infused vodka drinks. For the main dish you will find that the sauce for each dish is unique and the portions large enough to share. Rice is extra for only a small amount.

Always Very Good

By wayflos |

We enjoyed Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken Chow Mein. This is not your grandmas chinese food, it was all very fresh and delicate. We have enjoyed this restaurant many times, the service and food quality are always excellent.

Very Good Chinese Food

By C B |

Very good food; atmosphere was so-so, but we'd rather have good food than a special atmosphere. All of our dishes were very tasty, good sized portions. We'll go back.

Unexpected Chinese

By Jim H |

Cultural foods are just that......there are a lot of the same old same old. Then, when least expected, there comes a non descript restaurant that is actually really good. Really good. I like cashew nut chicken. This place puts up a superior portion and palatable dish. Went here for a business lunch with a long time friend that suggested this as a venue. Great service, great food, great menu.......enough said. I WILL return. Excellent value and tasty. Only wish the soup had smaller chunks of tofu and ginger.

Terrific Chinese food, great service in family friendly restaurant!

By CeadmileJacksonville |

We were seated in back room next to a play area, to the delight of my young grandchildren. (Front room is quieter & more elegant). They brought child friendly cups and plates. More importantly, food was wonderful. We ordered pot stickers, pan pacific wontons and spring rolls at happy hour prices. Quantities were large. Wontons and pot stickers to die for. Really enjoyed snow peas and prawns, which were delicious. Food was delivered very quickly. A terrific place!

Popular place, good food

By mkt_travel |

Whoever designed Shandong's sign did a good job. It's a fairly minimalist design but intriguing (just the name Shandong, with a Chinese character below it, and below that in smaller font size "Cuisine of Northern China") and after driving by it several times I had to try the restaurant. The place is popular and often crowded but they have a sort of back room which turns out to be a cleverly designed outdoor area pretty well converted to semi-indoor dining, with fabric walls and plenty of additional tables. But I still can't decide how well I like this place. I've been here three times, found it merely okay the first time, tremendously good the second time (it may've helped that I was with a large group that could order a lot of different dishes), and merely okay again the third time. Sauteed green beans are a dish that I frequently order because practically every Chinese restaurant serves them, but some do a better job than others. Shandong does a merely okay job with them -- but on that second visit there were some dishes that we liked tremendously. So it's a place worth trying out, but I can't give it an unqualified recommendation.

Good food but too expensive these days😒

By E3470PXpaulp |

Started going to Shandong the week it opened and got lunch to go a couple times a week. In and out at $7.50. But last to increases brought lunch at $10.00. Too rich for a Togo order without soup. Go maybe once every two months or so- bummer.

Best Chinese in PDX, but.....

By DougcpW |

This is in my opinion the best Chinese food in Pdx. It would be a great spot in larger cities like NY and DC. In fact, my family eats here and orders out all the time. Imagine my surprise when we found a large staple (metal) mixed in the veggies in one of our dishes! We told the owner about it and he comp'd us the dish. But really... That is it? We will still go back and even recommend the place because it really is that good, but if this were my place I'd offer the customer a whole lot more than a free dish!

Unsung Treasure

By HummerBob |

An excellent, if small, place for a variety of Chinese dishes. Great service and good food. Often overlooked. Recommended, but come early. Shandong is often packed around dinner time.

Good food and service

By Redbird48 |

I wanted to try a good Chinese restaurant on my Portland trip and decided on this one after reading the reviews. Overall, it was okay, not as stellar as we had hoped. I had sweet and sour chicken and it was great. Partner had Kung Pao chicken which was spicy but the chicken itself was kind of gross. The hot and sour soup was wonderful and came in a huge bowl (plenty enough for 4-5 people). Egg rolls were great as well. I had the hot jasmine tea with my meal and loved it. The waitress was exceptional! As with most Portland restaurants, there is no parking, which is stressful and a hassle. We were there right as they opened on a rainy Sunday and there were no other customers except for pick-up orders and we still had to park down a side street in a neighborhood.

Excellent Authentic Chinese food

By TerisTravels2 |

Excellent, authentic Chinese food. Owned by the people who opened Kung Pow on the west side. Generous portions, lighter than most traditional Chinese-American food preparations. If you plan on dining in the restaurant, get there early as they are quite popular because they are so very good.

Great Asian Food!

By Ted S |

My family and I go to Shandong whenever we are in Portland. Prices are reasonable and the service is great! We were there in mid August (2017) and we had four meals with drinks (both tea and beer) for under $80. We were there on a Thursday evening so we didn't need to make reservations. We had four dinners family style -- Hunan Pork, Shandong Beef, Shandong Shrimp, and a chicken entrée (but I can't remember which one). As usual, we were happy with both the food and the service. I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Portland so we can eat there again!

9 years of searching and we finally found decent Chinese food in Portland!

By ToniPortland_OR |

We moved to the Portland area from the San Francisco area in 2004 and have been searching all over the Portland metro for decent Chinese food. We've tried highly reviewed places, big names, holes in the wall, etc. etc. FINALLY, a place we will return to! For our first visit tonight, we tried some standard favorites to see how they measure up. We had the pot stickers, sesame beef, and (northern) chicken fried rice. I was very optimistic when an array of sauces appeared prior to the pot stickers. Shandong is the first restaurant we have found in the Portland area that has vinegar and red chili oil...to me, the only proper condiments for pot stickers and confoundingly absent in Portland. The pot stickers were the best part of our meal. Perfectly steamed, pan fried on one side, just the right balance of pork and ginger. Hallelujah! The sesame beef was a bit chewy (but tasty) and the chicken fried rice was a touch bland, but we reminded ourselves that Shandong features *Northern* Chinese cuisine. We prefer Schezuan and Hunan, but after 9 years we are grateful for well-prepared Chinese dishes of any region. The service was friendly, the tea was properly steeped, and the fresh orange wedges and fortune cookies were nice touches. Parking can be a bit confusing on a first visit. The adjacent parking lot is essentially off limits but we didn't have any problem finding neighborhood parking, plus the lot at the Key Bank across the street is available after 5:00pm. We will be returning to Shandong soon to try out the Hot & Sour soup, some of their homemade noodles, and the Kung Pao Chicken. YAY!

Nice Chinese Restaurant with Homemade noodles

By Retire Early And Travel |

We wanted to try a place that made their own noodles. And we didn't go wrong with picking Shandong. Delicious noodle dish.

Better than China

By John_H12847 |

Shandong is the best Chinese restaurant in town Parking is a pain, but if you can find a spot on the street near the restaurant, then you are in for a tasty treat. The servings are generous, so be cautious as to how much you order, unless you want to take it home. Doh! What an idea! Service is good with personnel that has a personality.

Over Rated

By D T |

Service was good but Shrimp was cold, curry chicken was bland, bathroom covered in graffiti, upholstery in booths was worn and torn. Not sure what this was, but definitely not Chinese. On the positive side nothing appeared to be pre-made and about half of the pan fried Brussel sprouts were very good, with the other half undone and too tough to eat. To assist anyone with calibration, I love food with a lot of flavor and it can be spicy as long as that adds to the flavor. I could scarcely taste the curry. Rice and tea were average, decent house wine. Very disappointed.

Looking for Dim Sum and came across a wonderful diversion.

By Keith L |

We were disappointed at the lack of Dim Sum restaurants in the downtown Portland area do we decided to head out to visit friends in the Hollywood district. They didn't know what Dim Sum was but suggested a Chinese place nearby. Shandong Noodles and Dumplings. While not really DimSum they did have excellent shrimp dumplings! We also had lunchtime cocktails called Re-Fresh, again excellent. We also shared an order of Red Curry Prawns and loved them. All in all we came away very satisfied!

Quick service very good food

By Levon M |

We ordered take out for 4 adults & 3 young kids. Everything was ready when they said it would be and there was no wait when we arrived to pick it up. They actually were putting the last item in the bags when we walked in the door. We had a number of different items and everything was very good. The price is right! The trick is to park across the street rather then try to park on their side. It's not a very busy street at the supper hour. They have none of their own parking. There was enough food left that we had enough for lunch the next day. Total for all of us including tip - $60. We are in Portland about once a year to visit family & we always get take out from hear on each trip.

Very happy with the Fresh Made Noodles

By Ayako E |

My partner and I stop by Shandong for lunch, and we (vegetarian & meat/seafood eater) were both happy we found this place. Lunch menu has lots of reasonable and tasty dishes, and their home-made noodle dishes seem pretty exciting. Our lunch was $16 total, with complimentary soup and tea. If you're looking for non-chain good-value and good-quality Chinese restaurants in Portland, Shandong is definitely worth a try.

Yummy and then...

By Ralph4878 |

I was excited to try Shandong given that some other places in town that I like for Chinese have gone downhill. Staff were very polite, though they were socializing quite a bit and could have been a touch more attentive. I popped in and placed my order to go; it was ready in about 10 minutes...very quick! Everything I had was tasty: Shandong beef, wonton soup, and Pacific wontons (though these came with no sauce). I was glad I got my meal to go, however: about an hour after eating I had to use the bathroom, errrr, explosively. My hands and ankles swelled and even until the morning after (today) my bowels are a mess. This happens to me when MSG or just a ton of salt is used in flavoring food. So, I'd say that if you are okay with these additives and can stomach them just fine, enjoy the food - it is quite tasty! If , however, you are sensitive to MSG/salt, best be near the potty. Yikes!

OMGoddess this place is killer

By mardi c |

a regular stop for me. I've had so many things here, and nothing disappoints. They even offer some dim sum items during happy hour. I love the pork belly fried rice. the hot wings, shumai, the beans, the service, the drinks, gigantic pot stickers, sauteed green beans, spicy dry friend chicken, all things spicy dry rock in here. with hard liquor to boot.

Excellent take out

By tjmscott |

Ordered a variety of dishes to suit all the family. Lovely flavour, prompt service and with a smile when collecting. It was one of the best take outs I have had recently. Best value is to order direct from their website and avoid the apps. Enjoy .

Unique Chinese, worth a try

By NorthwestTripper |

This is probably the best Chinese food we've had. *NOT* the standard Americanized version, but more authentic and unique combinations. Really a unique treat. Can get very busy and people just stand around waiting, so a better waiting area would be nice, but popular is also a good thing.

Superb Noodles

By CharlieVVancouver |

I am a lover of fresh noddles. So the discovery of the restaurant a few years back became a blessing. The fresh noodles are in their soups which are a combination of noodles, protein (chicken/shrimp/ect) and vegetables. Delightful! If you are expecting the typical Chineese food offered in the USA, this is not for you. If you are looking for a terrific meal. This is the PLACE.

great great Chinese food

By bang_go |

On September 21st 10 of us celebrated a birthday. It was the first time any of us had gone to Shandong's. The minute we walked in we were impressed. The decor with fabulous each place setting was fabulous. The only thing we would have changed was it was pretty small interior. So everybody sat really close together. The food was ultra fabulous. we selected several items off the menu to share. And we didn't order 1 thing that was not good. The service was good and quick and friendly. We would, and have recommended this place to others and will be going back there very soon. Be sure to make reservations it is a small place.

Why Did I Think They Wanted My Business

By John R |

My previous review of this restaurant alluded to a lack of concern about the restaurant employees for their customer. We've been trying to use various restaurants during these hard times for them, so we thought we would give Shandon't another try. We should have gone elsewhere where someone appreciated our business. During our phone order, the guy taking the order cut me off after I gave him one item to tell me the order would be ready in 15 minutes. As I tried to continue, he cut me off time and time again. We're acquainted with the owner and in frustration I asked for him telling the guy maybe he would be interested in taking my order and hearing my comments on the conversation to that point. Things got more professional if not polite from that point on. Since the dishes from Shandong can be quite bland (not the shrimp rolls), we asked that the pork dish be heavily doused with chilis and if the cook didn't want to do it, don't make it. Our bill was $46.50 and we added 15%. The food? The shrimp rolls were great as always. The peas, broccoli and black mushrooms was well cooked (still crunchy) and the sauce fit them well. The pork, was still without taste and had gristle and bone pieces. We are done. For the price we paid, the bs we had to go through, what made me think that helping them out was worth it. They obviously don't care.

One of the best Chinese restaurants in Oregon

By ManzanitaPortland_OR |

A little place in northeast Portland. Parkign can be difficult because the parking lot is super small. That there is often people waiting for a table tells you something. The make good Szechuan food. The lunch prices are very reasonable, and the dinner prices are good too. Add to that the happy hour. Brown rice is an option for an extra 50 cents. The atmosphere is very nice - modern Chinese - no screaming dragons and all of that kitch one often sees. Recommendation" the kung pao chicken and the cherry pork.

Really good food and really good service

By Fafnerb |

Very welcoming and attentive service, and the food is excellent. We had the sautéed green beans, and sesame tofu, along with a chicken dish. It was all really good, and too much to finish. Glad to have leftovers.

Better than average, but not great

By Nocilantro52 |

A co-worker recommended Shandong so I decided to try it. I had a doctor appointment at Providence and it was only 5 minutes away -- so it said on the GPS. However, it was not very easy to find it in the dark, and certainly not easy to find a place to park in the dark, never having seen the place or been there. I ended up going around the block a couple of times, then parking in the lot next door -- where all the spaces were marked NECC only. I'm not sure what NECC is, but I went ahead and parked there anyway -- my apologies. The place is small and there were lots of people there, which means it's pretty popular. The servers were very friendly and efficient. They took my order pretty quickly and the food came quickly as well. I'm pretty particular about Chinese food, and like to try Happy Family wherever I go, as nearly all places have it -- except this one. I couldn't find a combination of meats with lots of vegetables, so I settled for something else: Mu Shu Shrimp, which I haven't had for a very long time. I also ordered spring rolls -- they were quite large and I couldn't eat them all myself, which is fine as I will have them for lunch. The Mu Shu was good -- though it seemed to lack flavor, or at least salt, which wasn't on the table. I know I shouldn't take in much extra salt so I didn't ask for any. It was OK. The sauce was good, the pancakes seemed fresh, and all in all it was a good meal. I didn't notice any music playing -- which was better than many Chinese restaurants that play some kind of current rock or hip-hop music. I really prefer to have some nice, soft, traditional Chinese music, so the silence was the next best thing. This seems to be a popular place, so that's a good recommendation.

Go for the Pot Stickers, stay for the rest

By Dyanne G |

Love this place. Best pot stickers in the greater Portland area and the best I have had on the west coast in the last 20 years. Dishes are very fresh even at lunch time with lunch specials. Is it the most authentic?, No but I don't go there for authentic I go for the yummy flavors. Just try it, you won't be sorry.

Wonderful ambiance and service

By Scott Z |

Wonderful service at a reasonable price. Food was great and server excellent. The fresh made noodles are a special treat.

ShanDong, you stay, ShanDong, sashay away

By DanielLogan |

This is an Ok place for Chinese - the flavored are good but service is decent. Love the food. The space is so small so get ready for that. Still recommend this place if you are in the hood. Cute.

They obviously do not care AT ALL

By Daisy R |

Our group of about a dozen friends gathered for lunch at Shandong. While ordering, our server abruptly informed us that they do not split bills and required either cash payments or all charges on a single card. This policy wasn't mentioned on their menu, website, or signage. We asked about moving to separate tables. Could we use our cards if we did that? The server was flat out RUDE, making faces at us, shrugging and passive-aggressively letting us know that she was not going to give an inch. This led four of us to leave to go to the nearby Sushi place. (Very good, by the way). We've enjoyed group lunches across Portland without ever encountering this cash-only/one-card-only policy. Today's experience (Wed, June 25) was marked by rudeness, inflexibility, and a complete lack of customer appreciation. It's like they actively want one-star reviews. Won't ever be back.

Excellent Fresh Noodles

By halor |

Shandong makes it's own noodles daily and they are excellent. Their freshness makes a real difference in the dishes. Every noodle dish is a winner. We recently had dinner as a party of seven which enabled us to taste a wide variety of dishes. All were excellent. Pot Stickers are often mundane, but Shandong's were exceptional with great dough and a plump, juicy filling of pork and cabbage, fried to a perfect golden brown. The favorite dish was the Shandong Beef, garlicky marinated flank steak, stir-fried to perfection. Whatever you choose will most likely be very satisfactory. The restaurant is fairly small, one rectangular room with tables crowded close together. And the restaurant is busy, so waits can be long. But the food outweighs the lack of ambiance and the wait.

Great food!!

By StandingByZed |

My wife and I visited Shandong after seeing the good reviews. It did not disappoint. The Mongolian Beef or the Mu Shu would be a great choice. Do not miss if you ate in the area.

Great food and atmosphere

By Gusfadden |

Really like this place. Not sure if the owner is Chinese or westerner but it does not feel like your typical Chinese restaurant. Food is creative and well done. They have craft beer, which is unusual for Chinese restaurant. The dumplings were tasty. However, I would not recommend the mapo tofu.

Not bad but not great either

By Sechari |

I have to say, I was sadly disappointed by this place. I lived in China for a few years and Northern Chinese cuisine is among my favourites. Incidentally the only item I really enjoyed were the very Shanghainese Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings). Everything else we had was just okay, with the exception of the vegan potstickers which were downright bad. Still, I'd return just for the Xiao Long Bao. The environment was nice, the service professional and friendly, prices were quite reasonable and the house wine was surprisingly good. Actually, my recommendation is to go during happy hour, order a house wine and then a whole bunch of Xiao Long Bao!

best in portland

By Eric S |

Simply the best Chinese food in portland. Northern Chinese, elegant simple. We went there after my wedding and have taken many out of town guests. Never disappointed.

I probably shouldn't tell you

By PortlandFoody |

I've been wanting to go to this little hole in the wall for a long time but I kept seeing a line at the door, but not last night. The place was small and the place was full and the waitstaff seemed to dance around the room. The service was great, even though very busy our waitress had time to give her opinion on our prospective items of choice. I ordered the Shandong beef, it was heavenly and Steve ordered the Mu Su pork, it also was so fresh and tasty. I will be back even if I see a line, it's worth it. The prices are around $10.00 a meal which for the high quality of the meal is well worth it. I hope they do really well, they've got the right idea on how to make a restaurant work.

Great local chinese restaurant

By dgard0349 |

There seems to be a lack of Chinese restaurants in the close in parts of NE Portland but this definitely fills the gap. Everything is very fresh and a balanced variety of spicy and mild dishes. The appetizers are all good but try the pot stickers and the spring rolls. Main dishes are consistently excellent. My favorites are the Human shredded pork(spicy) and the curry chicken fried rice. This is not classic Chinese but more of a blend of traditional and the chef's creativity. Whatever it all works' Service is good but it is smaller venue and very popular with locals so be prepared for a wait on weekends and holiday's.

Memorable authentic chinese food

By Larry B |

We were about to leave Portland the next day and realized we hadn't been to a chinese restaurant recently, and wanted to get good quality chinese before we traveled to more rural areas where if you can find one, the food all tastes the same, and you end up drinking water all night to satisfy the MSG durge. This turned out to be one of our best decisions in a while, because the food at Shandong was spectacurlarly good. Freshly made noodles, and just the right amount of spices on all the dishes to bring the flavor of the dishes to their maximum delight. I had the Shandog beef, which was wonderfully spiced and sauced. I wanted to take some home so that I would have leftovers the next day, but almost didn't make it, as I continued to pick at it until the boxes came. My wife had the chicken curry pot, which had a hint of cinnamon, and maybe orange spice? In any event it was very tasty. The appetizers were plentiful and very tasty as well. Not much of an atmosphere, but better than many chinese restaurants I've been in. All in all, a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend this restaurant whether you have a craving for chinese food or not.

Don't Bother...

By Chuck&Susan |

Blend an aloof waiter with a flat affect who never mentioned any specials (there were some we later discovered) and charged us for rice without telling us there was a special charge for rice. Then add in food that was over-olily and not very distinctive. And for the cherry on top add in frenetic music blown through a room of 60+ year olds. Will not be returning.

Someone's got a new fave Chinese restaurant; id est, you're reading the words of the newly enlightened. This kitchen rocks!̦ literally, in an olde-school neighborhoody way. I've logged a couple decades as a discriminating bi-coastal restaurant-goer (& my kids have never refused my cooking, so iMust be doing s/t write;~). Shandong fits well into the canon of family-run ethnic sit-down spots. And the greater Hollywood community is lucky for it (among other gems of MirthEast Porkland). Hot & Sour soup: delish. Spicy dry-fried chicken: satisfying. Signature beef: well-spiced and ravenously consumed as a leftover. Always Great

By Graymouse1 |

I eat lunch here about once a month. The Shandong chicken keeps me coming back. Here's a typical lunch: hot and sour soup followed by tasty and plentiful entree with rice, tea, a fortune cookie, and an orange wedge for $8. Who would not like that!?

Best Chinese food in Portland

By Kurt W |

We visited portland last week and after going to Multnomah Falls and shopping we were very hungry. We were looking for Voodoo Donuts Too and came upon this place just down the street. Our friends who just moved to Portland area had heard about this place as we drove by. Make the u-turn , park and go on inside. Prices are very reasonable and the food is awesome. Although I've never been to China and had authentic Chinese food I'm assuming it probably tastes as good as this.

Best Chinese food I've ever had!

By tripgirlMichigan |

We stumbled on this restaurant on a recent trip to Portland and the food is a great value (two people ate for a whopping total of $15) and it's the best Chinese food I've ever had. I had the kung pao shrimp and it was excellent. The portions are large but not too large if you're really hungry, and mine had a ton of shrimp which was cooked perfectly. My husband had the kung pao beef, which he has ordered at restaurants all over the country, and he said it was among the best he's ever had, right up there with some of the Chinatown restaurants in NYC. The restaurant is pretty small, but it's well done, with bamboo tables and pale green booths. We were there for lunch right after they opened for the day and it was COLD! Our waitress said they have to get it really cold early in the day or it's unbearably hot by the dinner rush, so if you go for lunch make sure you take a jacket. The service was pretty average and low key. I would definitely go here again next time we visit Portland.

A Chinese restaurant that is not so typical Chinese

By Richard L |

Get in this restaurant based on reading review. I have to say I was totally surprised: this is a Chinese restaurant without one single Chinese (at least when we walked in). Surpringly, it was really good. Try the appetizer pot stickers and Shanghai Shao long bao. They are very good. The dishes are on the generous side and the one area that can be different is that all dishes are a bit salty. Overall, a good experience and I would recommend it.

Great Chinese food and selection

By BugsGWP |

I've been to this place a few times. Very popular, has a better bar than most Chinese places -- some very interesting cocktails. Last visit was a family Christmas dinner with eight people. The place was packed with folks awaiting tables as well as those taking out food, attesting to its popularity. Fortunately, we had made a reservation. We got all the favorites, starting with soup, and moving on to a broad array of dishes, some vegetarian, some with meat. My favorite is their eggplant -- nice sauce, great flavor, and a generous amount of eggplant. We also had a noodle dish with shrimp, and about five other dishes. We enjoyed them all and cleaned it all up. My only less than favorable experience was with their Moo sho pork -- on a prior visit, it seemed to be heavier on the cabbage, with less sauce, and far thicker pancakes than the style I like best. But every other dish I've had there sits up with the best at other similar places.

YUMMY

By supertraveler33 |

We arrived in Portland on a RV road trip and meeting a friend here, her air bnb suggested, Shandong, we had Shandong beef, flavorful and finger licking good, also spice dry chicken, very good, also hubby had a dish for a gluten free eater, they were very happy to help with suggestions. Our waitress couldn't be nicer, she had just gotten back from vacation.

popular chinese restaurant. great food but the server decided to play cop and card a person at our table who was obviously of age and said she slurred when they recited their address for him upon his request and he wouldn't serve them a drink. they weren't exhibiting any signs of drunkeness. It frustrated our whole table of friends. the food was good, but that attitude was a real turn off.

Exquisite Chinese Food

Having had lots of mediocre Chinese food we where in ectacy with the food at Shandong. Arriving just before 6:00 pm we enjoywd some appetizers off the happy hour menu. Making a distinctive impression was the crab ragoon which was the best I've ever had made with real crab oozing with cheese and geeen onions.. Yummmmm. Rounding out the meal where some clasics ; Kung Pow chicken, Shrimp Chow Mein and Beef with Brocli. Rice is not included with any dishes so add white or brown rice additionally. The food tastes and feels healthier than most Chinese food we've had with fresh vegtables.

Great food, but noisy

By Sonya C |

We went to Shandong for my birthday, and the food was great! The portions are large, so we ended up taking some home. Even my picky kids loved the food. We had two kinds of chow mein, the the wontons. It certainly fulfilled my craving for Chinese food! I only gave it 3 stars because the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean, but it is small and very noisy. We also had to wait quite a while for a table, although there is an adjoining room that is not being used but could be? Also, some of the waitstaff looked a bit unkempt. I would go back for takeout, but not to dine in. Tip - you need 5 or more people to make a reservation.

Excellant Chinese food

Rather than eat in with 2 small children & a 4 month old baby we ordered take out. They were bringing it out of the kitchen when we walked in the door. We had a variety of items and all were excellent. It's the best Chinese food we have had in Portland. prices are very reasonable.

An excellent meal out!

A friend and I went here and I loved the food. The best was the Shao Loong Bao which I could have eaten all night long! It was very busy and we had to wait a short time to get a table but it was well worth the wait!

Delicious food - very user friendly restaurant.

There were 6 of us for dinner and we had reserved a table as it is a small restaurant. We ate family style; chicken wings, dumplings, pot stickers, fried rice, a beef dish. Everything was perfect. We found the cucumber cocktail a little too sweet but aside from that, everyone was very happy.

The best noodles period

Hands Down the BEST Chinese Anywhere!

By Morgan M |

I cannot begin to tell you how long we have been looking for that "go-to" Chinese restaurant. The one that will make me forget the place in San Francisco that I miss and tell everyone about how good it is. You know, the one that you automatically call or head toward when you are craving the good stuff. THIS is the place. After twenty or so years of searching, this is it. We live in Vancouver, and have tried numerous Chinese restaurants in Portland and Vancouver, looking for a place that doesn't taste like Safeway Chinese. This place serves authentic, house-made everything, and man, is it good! Do not miss getting the HUGE pot stickers or the dry-fried beef--they are both outstanding! We are working our way through the menu, and so far, there isn't anything I wouldn't order again. Service was friendly and efficient without being cold or curt. Atmosphere is cute, cozy, and not too fancy or hipster (thank you, Shandong--I very much appreciate that aspect of your place--I am over hipster style and culture). Parking is a challenge, but what place in Portland has parking that isn't? It's worth the struggle to find parking here. Our server suggested we try to hit it for lunch sometime, as it is very affordable and you get soup, rice, etc. included. But honestly, I thought their dinner prices were very affordable and there's plenty to take home. When compared to some of the "Food Network" heavily-praised Asian restaurants in Portland, this place kicks butt on the value-for-your-money scale all day and night. And their dishes are as good, if not better on some counts, as those more high-profile places with longer lines and MUCH steeper prices. And yes, there is a wait. It is not a sprawling place--it is cozy. But get over it. Good, affordable food is worth waiting for! So happy to have found Shandong!

A great wall above the rest

In some sense of the matter I dont want to write a review because I don't want everybody to find out that this is the most excellent place for Chinese food in the Portland metro area. Here is all I can tell you. We love it, and anytime friends or family visit from out of town Shandong is one of the first places they want to go back to. The vegetable fried rice is to-die for!!!

Great Lunch

Once again Shandong sets the standard for us for Chinese food. The egg flower soup was delicate and delicious. Kung Pao Chicken so fresh and tasty. My wife had the Judy’s Noodles, and swears they are the best ever. The quality of food and service is the standard all restaurants should strive for.

In the mood for Chinese food

By BeeKind2all |

In town for the OSAA State Wrestling Tournament. Checked Trip Advisor for a restaurant in NE Portland. Shandong was at the top of the list. Arrived in time for Happy Hour 4-6 PM. Although there were two of us, only one drink order either alcohol or non-alcohol was required to qualify for HP prices. Ordered pork potstickers which were very good. Our entrees were Porkbelly Mapo Tofu -see photo and Soy Curl Mongolian accompanied by one order of brown rice. The Mapo pot was boiling when it arrived at our table. Porkbelly is "squeaky" when chewed. The tofu soaked up the flavored of the Mapo sauce. Delish. Attentive and friendly wait staff. Clean and pleasant interior. Plenty of leftovers to reheat for dinner the next day. Reasonable prices. I do recommend.

Average food and some bland

By TikiTravels |

I found the food here rather bland and more Americanized in terms of spice on some dishes. One dish I ordered the egg plant was supposed to be spicy but didn’t have any spice in it. It was also heavily coated in sauce(almost swimming). Soup was egg drop and no other alternative to that at lunch. There were sides of vinegar and chilli oil to turn it into a hot n sour. The fried tofu appetizer was cut in huge chunks and no knife so hard to cut with a fork or chopsticks. They tea was very good here and food portions were pretty large. Check with restaurant first as they don’t accept all credit cards. Maybe I had the wrong dishes

Popular local spot

By AlfalfaAnchorageAK |

We came here while visiting a friend who likes this restaurant. It's definitely popular with the locals, and Shandong offers both table service dining and takeaway. The Won Ton soup we shared was really quite nice, and each ordered something different. My tofu dish was very good, with nice spices. Our friend ordered the Cherry Pork and my husband had some sort of chopped (hacked up) pork dish. That would be my only complaint; the way meat is so poorly prepped and trimmed for these dishes. I tried our friend's cherry pork, which had a nice sauce, but breaded and fried gristle is still gristle and inedible. My husband's pork dish also had a very nice sauce, but was basically hacked up meat with large portions of untrimmed fat attached. Further, the hacking up of the meat was not thorough, as he had a large chunk of semi-chopped meat and fat that had to be picked apart. This would be an outstanding place for Asian food if they would simply pay more attention to better meat preparation.

Sorry, Shandong, I've had a lot better.

The Fourth of July is probably not the best day of the year to find a restaurant open. Fireworks and barbeque is almost a must in America, and despite the fact that I don't wear a red hat with a meaningless slogan, I'm very much a patriot. However, my wife and I hungered for Asian food after a weekend of swimming and sunning. Both of our original choices were closed for the day, (after all, fireworks originated in China) and so, with a little assistance from Google, we decided on Shandong, on NE Broadway in Portland. The place was packed and with a waiting list. A good indication of quality. Only problem was, everyone waiting and at tables looked just like me, that is to say, Caucasian. The other Chinese restaurants we usually frequent in Portland are stuffed to the gills with Chinese diners, which is a much better indication of quality than any waiting list. We were shown to a table, given some menus and prepared to have what I've read here on TripAdvisor was "Hands Down the BEST Chinese Anywhere!" Instead, I got some Chinese-like stuff that, while edible, was anything but "the best." The ordered Tan Tan Noodles, a concoction of fat, gummy noodles dripping with a strangely seasoned chili sauce, arrived almost instantly, a tip-off to precooking, I would say. Eggplant with garlic, came only seconds later and was covered with a goppy brown sauce with no scent of the promised garlic. The eggplant was so infused with hot oil, that the first few bites were near intolerable. The only decent dish of the three we ordered was a pork concoction that was essentially a stir-fry I could have whipped up at home. The biggest surprise was when the waitress (not Asian) asked us what kind of rice we wanted, white or brown. What Chinese person would eat rice and noodles together in the same meal? It's like that famous scene from "The Big Night," when the diner insists upon getting a side of spaghetti with her risotto. You don't eat spaghetti with risotto, and you don't eat rice, brown or white, with noodles. We ended the meal with, of course, a fortune cookie, the ubiquitous finish to all authentic Chinese-American cuisine. In the future, we will make the trip to HK, or Wong's or Ocean City. I'll forgo the fortune cookie.

Lunch with friend

Great food and friendly staff! Started with complimentary tea and soup. Both delicious. Then the very fresh and delicious spring rolls served with homemade mustard sauce. The Shandong beef was excellent. Absolutely worth visiting again and looking forward to it.

Good food, good service, all at a good price

By Justvisiting1950 |

At this informal restaurant you will find very good Northern Chinese food with a focus on noodle dishes. The portions are large so be prepared to bring your leftovers home. Do not be concerned about the food being overly spiced, it isn't.

Excellent and fresh - well worth the trip

By JRobock R |

We read other reviews and were a little skeptical, but this restaurant exceeded our expectations. I found plenty of vegetarian choices and others found interesting dishes. I had Judy's Noodles and loved it. Prices were very reasonable and the atmosphere airy and very pleasant. Service was on going, with water glasses always full. The chef stopped by our table to check on us and spent time explaining some of the dishes. We were impressed by the attention we received and left happy and quite full. Next time we're in Portland, we'll definitely return.
