Visited for brunch on a Sunday afternoon and had no problem getting a table immediately. Home fries, donut waffle, and chicken stood out as great dishes. Service was average but our server was really polite and helpful. Will be back again :-)

We stumbled on to Shanes by chance. looking for a place to have lunch near the Brooklyn Botanical Garden (a web search had turned up a few places in the area but not this one). The very friendly owner (really nice guy; he named the place after his son) welcomed us at the door and quickly found a comfortable place for our party of seven. Service was consistently warm and friendly. At lunch time there is a full breakfast and lunch menu with something for everyone in the family. Between us we had a cheeseburger, a delicious grilled chicken sandwich with pesto and red peppers, various salads, waffles, fried eggs, and pancakes. The house made strawberry and mango lemonades were delicious. The kitchen was a little slow but the quality was worth the wait, with everything freshly made with quality ingredients. Great neighborhood atmosphere too. We plan to be back any time we are in the neighborhood.

Shane's is a super friendly neighborhood place that I'd recommend for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. We had cinnamon donut waffles (yummy) and fried tilapia and grits (also yummy). And the hash browns were absolutely the best I've ever had. I rarely eat the greasy hash browns that usually come with breakfast, but these were perfect: lightly fried on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. The service is not fast, but everyone who works there is friendly and helpful with special requests.

We stopped for lunch/ brunch on a recent hot Sunday after meeting up friends visiting in NY. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We all ordered egg dishes and were pleased with our selections (spinach omelets and Greek omelets). Prices were reasonable. Would come again if in the area.

Stopped in for breakfast on our way to the Brooklyn Museum of art. Enjoyed the casual atmosphere and local feel to the place. Service was great and Eggs Benedict wonderful! Southern home fries had a nice spice to them..... But I'm from MN. Dina recommended a "cherry mimosa" her recipe & it was a tasty breakfast treat!

I went in a group of 12 physicians in the morning for breakfast after an overnight shift. We ordered 6 pitchers of mimosas of varying flavors and had breakfast. The mimosas were really good! I had the oatmeal, very tasty. And plenty had the fried chicken and waffles, which also were really good (tried it - also tried the "donut" waffle things, amazing). I recommend this place for breakfast.

Someone brought me shrimp and grits from here a while back and it was delicious. Went to lunch here with friends and we ordered chicken & waffles, fried fish & home fries and shrimp and grits. Everything was prepared to perfection. I just wish that I had more grits, no worries I sampled the home fries, chicken and fish and they were excellent. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was great we were there for a couple of hours and weren't rushed or hovered over. Very pleasant. The white sangria was heaven in a glass. My friends and I will definitely put Shane's on our list of places to return to.

Brunch on a Saturday with a small group. Small casual environment. My group of 9 were seated downstairs. Our server was attentive. Food took a while after ordering, but it was a Saturday and this place boast about the freshness of its food. So because most of us ordered fried fish or chicken our orders took time to prepare. Grits and whiting was good not great.Fresh not much seasoning, I rarely add salt but Ii had to.However, others with me stated it was possibly the best fish they've had. One of our party questioned if it was really whiting.Grits was okay. Very reasonably priced. Will tryy again..

This tight space needs a facelift to look and smell cleaner. The menu was surprising. I had a restaurant made veggie burger. Wonder if the review would be better had I ordered fish and grits? Overall you can eat the food.

If I could give it zero stars I would. I didn’t even eat there. I went today 5/19/2024 at 1:30 pm. I asked to be seated outside and she said no because that table was for a big party. It was just me and my girlfriend. I would have probably ordered enough for a big party. Either way she informed me it was a half hour wait or I could sit downstairs inside. I would have eaten there if the hostess was nicer. But she was not nice. She was nasty. I think her last hostess postion was at Rikers Island. So don’t go here for the service or not at all. I chose to go to Barboncino around the corner.

We visited this restaurant after a local recommended it. The place has a nice relaxed feel to it, and staff is efficient and friendly. In the larger dining area, the walls are lined with great pictures of famous African Americans. The owner came out to greet our group, and we all felt very welcomed. On our first visit, we had the chicken and waffles which were phenomenal. The chicken was cooked to crispy/tasty perfection on the outside, with a juicy inside. The waffles were wonderful cinnamon/apple. Other members of of our group raved about the fish and cheese grits. On our second visit, we passed the line for the trendy spot on the corner, and were seated quickly. I had the steak and eggs with a bowl of the cheese grits and could not have been happier of our choice of restaurant. The staff was very friendly and efficient, and even allowed me to purchase a cheeseburger for a local homeless man. This place will definitely be revisited the next time we are in Park Slope!

We wanted a late breakfast and we were in the neighborhood. Thought we would give Shane a try. We arrived at a good time and we were seated immediately. Our waitress Nicole came right over, introduced herself and was ready to take our drink orders. Food orders were placed right after and came out fresh, hot and cooked to order. I had fish and grits and my husband had fried chicken with eggs over easy and hash browns. I found the fish to be heavy on the crunchy batter. I had to put a lot of hot sauce to bring out the flavor. The chicken is coated with the same coating. May I to suggest to Shane, ease up on such a heavy coating which has no added salt and mask the meat flavor. Outside of that, great atmosphere, 70,s and 80’s R&B and pictures or videos onscreen to watch. Enjoy your meal!

Sunny day so thought we would get on subway & walk round Prospect park. Lunch first though & we found this little gem. Tiny diner, but very friendly staff & great lunch time food.Lots of local people eating here. Husband & nephew had huge home made burgers & fries & I enjoyed a cajun chicken sandwich. A couple of beers & a chat about ping pong grips with Shane. Be adventurous, cross the water from manhattan & lunch here!!

Shane's was the friendliest restaurant we visited while in Brooklyn. Their food is delicious. I had Challah French toast and every bite was a delight.

We went for brunch and had good waffles. A small place so tables were squashed in and service was a little slow but prices for the area weren't too bad.

We went to Brooklyn on a day trip to go to the museum. It was a very cold and windy day. The places I had found near the museum didn't pan out, so we were stuck with this place. It was terrible. The service was polite but incredibly slow. It took a very long time to get our order and most things were cold. They cover their front window with plastic for insulation, but there was a hole in it and cold air was blowing in on us the whole terrible time. Stay away, far, far away. When we go again, we think the museum cafe looks much better for the same prices or less.

I was in New York visitng my wonderful boyfriend over the weekend, on my to the airport we were looking for a place near by to eat that offered some vegan options. We saw Shane's and said, "what the heck lets do it." He likes exploring with me, he never notice the place before. The signs on the wall clearing states why you would have to wait longer for your meal, all meal are made to order, so for those of you who had a problem with wait time, they let you know before you get started, so take the time to read. I ordered a veggie sandwich and my boyfriend had a salmon sandwich, we both enjoyed it, what a surprise! The young lady who served was friendly, we thought it was a very nice little spot, plain and simple, liked the doors, they opened to the outside to allow "fresh" LOL We said we would eat here again if we were in the area.

Active Restaurant…. Very pleasant and attentive. We ordered a breakfast egg sandwich, an Italian sandwich (chicken breast with peppers and cheese) and a Fried Catfish sandwich… ALL very delicious… good quantity and quality. Look forward to revisiting.

The food nor the service were worth what we paid for. There was no other customers in the restaurant the entire time we were there (around 9am) & it still took us forever to get our food. The staff was nice but there was really nothing special about this place.

My bestie & I went & had a great meal. The drink I had was ok but the food choices were great. The tables are SMALL & tight but that didn't stop the people because it was busy. The prices were decent also.

hearty meal! The 1 thing that took a star away from being a 5-star rating was that Yelp said the restaurant is open at 9am, and the restaurant hours also said that it was supposed to be open by 9am. The doors were still locked, curtains were still closed. We called and the staff said to come in, so we did. We waited for 5-minutes until I got the cook's attention, so he notified the host/waiter that they have customers waiting. We were seated promptly, ordered, and had a huge meal.

Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and great food! We stopped here a couple of times for breakfast as we were staying just around the corner. Fantastic Greek omelettes!

You'd easily pay twice the price for this kind of quality of breakfast/brunch food in Manhattan. This place is Southern inflected do you can have grits if you wish, but I had a really good Western omelette with home fries that I could eat all day. Leave a good tip, and for my fellow Brits, that means 20%! If you're visiting the Brooklyn Museum, make sure to stop by - it's a 3 minute walk.

Wow! What a great place! This is what we ordered: Eggs Bennidict - outstanding And Cinnamon doughnut waffle - to die for So good. The breakfast came with a salad, that I thought was odd. ...but liked it. The home fries were spicy and flavorful! Just a fun place that seems to have Soul Train on a continual loop. ....it is just another reason why you leave feeling great and happy.....and full!

I've eaten here on several occasions & I love the intimate atmosphere. The food is always delicious, the portions are pretty big & the prices are reasonable. It does get crowded on the weekends so come early for brunch!!!

I have to say I was very surprised by this place; you enter and behind the curtains wala!!.This spot extends to the back as well as downstairs where the owner was able to complete the renovations in rocket time. .The decor is very well thought out. Very cozy. Now let's talk about the cusine that is offered; breakfast, brunch , whatever you want it was great. The best eggs benedict that I have eaten in a very long time. I was even introduced to grits, which I did not know what it was. .lol. I must say it was good. In all,I would recommend this hidden gem for those who would like to explore Brooklyn snd be part of the "block "..it is not far from the Brooklyn museum. .two birds one stone..

Although the food is very good, I would have to say the friendly, happy atmosphere provided by the employees is what will keep me coming back every time I visit.

Yesterday (4/21/8) as usual, Shane’s Cafe never ceases to amaze me with each visit there. I frequent here often because the food, drinks and service is impeccable and impressive. Nice establishment with awesome staff. Everyone greets you with a smile. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for some good wholesome food 😊

Great breakfast: eggs and all were perfect. Service was friendly but very slow. Took over 15 minutes before waiter took first order, and it slowed down from there. Atmosphere was full of energy, which also means it was noisy.

My children and I go out to Tom's most weekends for breakfast. This past week however the line was extremely long and we were especially hungry. We decided to try Shane's Cafe which is next door. What a mistake. The waitress was the most forgetful person I have ever met. The portions were small the food was over done. I asked to have my hanger steak and eggs medium and got them very well done. My son had chicken and waffles and his chicken was so dry he coughed a few times. It took us 10mins to be seated but 1 1/2hrs to get our undesireable meal. I say no to Cafe Shane...you should too. Best.

understaffed had to wait 30 minutes for a hamburger to go then was charged almost #13 for an ordinary hamburger nothing special

I've been to Shane's several times and was pleased with what I got. This time, not so much. The place as usual was full and to me that's a good sign. I expected to wait for a seat but was asked if I cared to sit downstairs. I didn't even know there was a downstairs. It was cute with a play area for children under 5. The music was a bit loud but it was a good mix of old school R & B from the late 70's and 80's so I didn't mind that much. The food took a while but I attributed that to my having placed a custom order. I ordered fried chicken and grits. When my food did arrive, I could tell that it was freshly prepared. The chicken was crispy and juicy, the grits could have benefitted from a little salt in the water but overall the food was ok I guess this time but I know I've had better from them. I don't know if they had a new cook but they might want to rehire the old one if possible.

Shane's offers fresh and delicious food for breakfast and lunch but their dinner experience does not rise to the same level. The food is a mixture of standard American and Southern fare and always well-prepared. Although there seems to be a fair bit of staff turaround, the service is friendly and competent.

We strolled here after visiting the Brooklyn Museum on a cold and snowy Saturday. Chicken and waffles on point! Friendly staff and delicious food. Vintage clips from Soul Train on the TV downstairs. Awesome!

Shane's provides decent lunchtime & breakfast items in restaurant a couple of blocks from the Brooklyn Museum. I was on my way to that Museum, and dropped in for a quick lunch. I had the salmon burger + a side salad, which was very tasty (flavored bun and a mild sauce on top). The salmon wasn't overcooked, so the sandwich held together down to the last bite. There was plenty of seating inside during a weekday lunchtime rush, and service was prompt. The prices & food are better than the Museum's on-site restaurant, and it's only a block out of your way if you're walking from the subway. They also have an extensive breakfast menu that's available all day.
The South Comes to Brooklyn
We wandered into Shanes after visiting the nearby Brooklyn Museum. We had their Saturday afternoon brunch, and were very impressed with the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. The restaurant is small, but we didn't feel crowded. We had a fine table that looked out onto the street, and it almost had the ambiance of a small Parisian restaurant. Our main surprise, coming from Atlanta, was the several food choices that featured grits! Grits in Brooklyn! We were bowled over, but we appreciated the fine caliber of the food, and some of the dishes would have been the kind seen on good soul food restaurants in Atlanta. The prices were reasonable. We just had a relaxing and fulfilling meal. I hope we get to return.
