On the recommendation of local family, we met for a late dinner on a Thursday night. We went there and ordered the Dinner for 6. The dinner started with Fish Maw Corn Soup. The entrees were Salted Toasted Spareribs, Seafood with Vegetables, Lobster with Ginger and Scallion, Sautéed Sliced Sole Fillet, Steamed Chicken with ginger Sauce (Half), and Sautéed Fresh Vegetables with Garlic. As there were eight in our group we added the Walnut Shrimp with Mayonnaise. While all the dishes were good, two were exceptional. The whole sautéed sliced sole fillet was more pan fried with the meat and vegetables served over it. The body of the fish was crispy with a wonderful assortment of vegetables in a yummy sauce. The body was done so that you could eat it bones and all. We did leave the head though. The walnut shrimp, which is one of my favorites, was done to perfection with just the right amount of mayonnaise sauce and the traditional candied walnuts. The service was prompt and friendly. There was plenty of food for our group of eight with the additional dish added. This was a great value for eight people.

Family went to Houston for nephew's wedding. Kim from Susan Hair Styling in same center recommended this restaurant and the food is excellent - true tasty Cantonese food. We really enjoyed the fish fillet with veggies, 3 Treasures Seafood, steak cube with mushroom and asparagus, salt and pepper ribs (had 2 orders), salted fish and chicken fried rice, beef chow fun, shrimp with cashews, and chicken in black bean sauce (this one was just ok) . Large portions and they were not skimpy in the protein! We are used to good Chinese food from San Francisco; but this restaurant holds it's own.

An outstanding hidden treasure family run authentic Chinese restaurant that has been in the Bellaire Chinatown for several decades. If you’ve never eaten there before, you should check it out. They have lunch specials and private dining rooms.

We've tried quite a few Chinese restaurants in Houston. If you want authentic Cantonese food (热炒), you will not be disappointed with this restaurant. We love their pan stir fried beef pho (干炒牛河), sizzling beef tenderloin (铁板黑椒牛柳), pepper pork ribs (椒盐排骨), pepper shrimps (椒盐虾), etc. All are very delicious. They also provide free soups. They are not only free but very appetizing. Our family loves this restaurant.

Where to eat Chinese food with so many options? I was tired of dumplings and noodle soup so decided to try based upon pictures of salt and toasted ribs. However when we got there I stepped up the ante and went with salt and toasted soft shell crab. It was delicious. We also had a beef noodle soup, deep fried green beans and crispy pan fried noodles with beef and greens. All in all it was definitely a spot on choice!

This is actually a Cantonese restaurant. When I asked why didn’t they change the name, the servers said it’s too troublesome to change. It was previously a Shanghainese restaurant. This is an authentic Cantonese cuisine restaurant. They don’t serve dim sum though. They have typical Hong Kong foods such as 艇仔粥. The servers, even the diners, are Cantonese 😄. You really feel like you are eating in Hong Kong! They were playing 张学友 songs while we were dining. Can’t get any more Hong Kong than this. The food is great. If you want to try the different ways food is cooked the Cantonese style, eat here: steam, fry, boil, etc. and the balanced use of sweet, sour, spicy sauces. Their chilli sauce is also a must try. After eating so much American food (bread, pasta, bacon, sausage) cooked in predictable ways, Shanghai Restaurant is a welcome change.

There are so many great restaurants in Houston, TX and this is definitely one of them! The food has a high quality, great presentation and friendly staff!

Great place for some good Chinese food. Northern Chinese food to be exact. We come here late night for food. Awesome menu. They have pictures for their Western menu. So you can just point to pictures instead of guessing what an item is or isn't.

Though I would rate this restaurant as average, they did have some good dishes. I ordered five different types of dim sum and for the most part I enjoyed all of them. They also had items that were not dim sum but I noticed the dishes were well presented and the people that ordered them seemed to enjoy what they ordered. I ordered four dishes from the steamed dim sum selections and one dish from the rice roll selection. One thing if you are ordering dishes order only a few dishes at a time so what you order will stay hot. You can always order more later.
Consistently Good Cantonese Food
I have been coming to eat here for several years and this place is probably the most consistently good Chinese restaurant in Houston. I would much rather come here than go to any of the other larger "name brand" Chinese restaurants. The place is family owned and operated and it is clear that the owner/chef takes pride in cooking proper classic Cantonese style dishes. None of that made up fusion food here! Some have complained that the place is old and dirty but I do not find that to be true. Is it spic and span clean? No it is not but for an old school Chinese restaurant, it is fine. The service has never been an issue. The wait staff actually knows the menu and what authentic Cantonese cooking should be so they are very helpful with suggestions. It is not expensive to eat here. I routinely order four or five entrees and the bill is about $65-$75. Well worth it for the quality of the food. Every dish arrives piping hot. If you are looking for well made authentic Cantonese food that will not cost you an arm and a leg, I highly recommend going to Shanghai Restaurant. All the dishes are served family style and is perfect for large groups. They also have two private rooms which I plan to use the next time I have a large group of family or friends in town.
