Above average sushi

By Bill H |

Friendly service with a nice decor. The sushi was good but far from great. Not sure why we did Sushi in Dallas and we did and we got what we should have expected - above average sushi.

noisy, excellent sushi and expensive

By cosmiced |

crowded, lively, fresh and delicious . portions can be big so order slowly, we got way to much food and a bill to go with it. the servers push you to order, guess they want to turn the tables and the food comes fast SO ,,, set your own pace and don't buckle to the pressure to eat and run Reservations a must and worth the experience

Great ambience, good food but too pricey.

By TheTraveller87 |

Sushi were great. I tried steamed halibut and jalapeño poppers as well. Food was good, not amazing, for the price we paid. I will probably try it again after some time.

Pretty good

By Swati J |

Shinsei is not authentic Japanese, but I believe the chefs and owners mean for this restaurant to be fusion. The food is tasty but overpriced. The ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful. I'll go back and give it another chance.

It is much more than Sushi

By DonEwing |

The sushi is excellent, but the other entree items like the Black Cod are wonderful, the Baby Back Ribs are excellent. The Brussel Sprouts are one of my wife's favorites. The Fried Onion Rings are great. The nice thing about Shinsei is that you can go with people that are not crazy about sushi and everyone can have a great meal.

Expensive Outing

By devonwayne |

While the food is delicious and the setting very cool the food is expensive. The setting is nice for a special occasion. Parking can be tricky but there is valet offered.

Incredible Upscale Asian Food

By JDPM1 |

The food here is always good and it is a little bit of a neighborhood gem. The citrus marinated steak is terrific and so is the sushi. Even the pickiest eaters will dine well here.

Terrible Service

By ccook83 |

I'm only giving this two stars for the food because is the service is absolutely terrible. We had a reservation for 5 and were put in a table for 4 by the bathroom. The restaurant was empty, yet we were told that this was the only table available. There was a table for 6 that was empty next to us that we asked for and were told that it was for another reservation. This table was never occupied while we there. I did enjoy the food, but the the service will send me elsewhere going forward.

Could have been better!Not traditional!

By Maxxjptx |

I know genuine Japanese food and this restaurant doesn't come close. And with only one Japanese chef it was disappointing. Food maybe fine for the western palatte but honestly there is much better. And a bit expensive. It is located in a not so good part of town. This Japanese restaurant is too commercial and misses the true Japanese tradition.

Well worth it

We had not been to Shinsei in some time, but it is as great as ever. Phenomenal food. Professional service. Vibrant atmosphere. Just as great as I remembered.

Great sushi and asian cuisine. Elvis works his magic behind the sushi bar - always fresh and tasty sushi, sashimi, and rolls. Othe faves include the fried rice and the bbq ribs. Perfect spot for friends who might be intimidated by raw fish...

Sushi in Dallas....

By 4226 |

Well I finally found a good sushi restaurant in Dallas, TX. I tried a few places and was beginning to think, stick with beef because you're in TX. Well this place is the real thing! The food is fresh and very good, the service was spot on. The choice of rolls was plentiful and varied. There were excellent choices. I will be back....

One of the best restaurants in Texas

By SchmetterlingDawn |

After being continually disappointed with the normal fare, I was absolutely delighted to find this fabulous restaurant in Dallas. As other reviews, quite correctly state, it's noisy - but if you go upstairs this noise can be somewhat lessened - and definitely worth swollen eardrums! The food is sensational. The sushi and sashimi is expensive - even by big city standards, but the choice of interesting mains are very reasonably priced. Looking at the cliental, looks like the Dallas 'gentry' are well aware of this special place. Sould not be missed.

With or without food...a great bar

By CliveWatkins |

I liked the bar and vibe here, and clearly by its popularity, the food speaks. This place is very comfortable, dark and cozy, with a great, friendly and efficient bar staff. Great wine list, and accessible prices, and easy in and out with valet. Wish I could have stayed all night.

Best Sushi, anywhere!

By Klagow |

I've been here tons of times and I've tried everything from the noodles to the rolls, it's all amazing. It's kind of hidden so drive slow if you're looking for it, but I promise it's worth the extra effort to find it. The pork steam buns will change your life, and the volcano roll is equally impressive. It's a small restaurant so unless you don't mind waiting either make reservations or go early!

Really enjoyed it - you HAVE to try the okra!

By a-travelin-foodie |

Again, we chose this for DFW restaurant week, but ended up ordering off the regular menu - there were just too many goodies on there to pass up. We started with the crispy rockfish, not really what you'd expect from a sushi place, but oh so yummy! The coating had all the perfect seasonings and was fried crispy with the shrimp inside just right. Gotta admit, we're rather spoiled with our rolls from LA and Maui....so we thought the fish in Shinsei's rolls was a bit unsubstantial for the price. We loved the concept of the pressed roll (in a square and without seaweed surround, so it's easy to take a bite instead of having to put the whole thing into your mouth). After that, and seeing other rolls arrive to other tables, we decided to head straight to the sashimi specials instead of try any more rolls. But first, the okra.....WOW! Whole grilled okra perfectly seasoned and cooked tender - just amazing! We try to get okra everywhere and this is one of the two best EVER! The sashimi specials are thin slices with a ponzu and/or oils and sliced jalapeno or garlic or other treats on top. We really enjoyed the Shinsei Sashimi, but not the Lynae's, which had dabs of "curry" sauce that seemed to be made from American curry powder, not our favorite "curry" flavor. Our waiter was friendly and very helpful once he found out it was our first time. We would love to return and try some of those other amazing looking dishes that passed by our table! Parking is an easy valet right out front. It was very busy by 7pm, so recommend you get reservations.

Amazing!

By Inner Happiness |

really liked the fresh sushi rolls (the Purple Rain was a standout) and the brussels sprouts were amazing. The cocktails were great too—though it did get a bit loud and the bill added up fast, the food and service made it worth the visit

Chef's Tasting

By jmhoward564 |

We dined here on what I thought would be a quiet Thursday night. Turns out the place is pretty busy, which must be a good thing! The shrimp dumplings we had during our 1st course were amazing! We all go eat dim sum at least once a month and these put that place to shame. 2nd course only got better, the pressed sushi, sashimi in ponzu, and the Hawaiian styled sashimi were amazing! Everything tasted so fresh and flavorful! Our main course was the cod, steak, thai fried rice and brussel sprouts. Those brussel sprouts were fantastic!!! The cod was extremely tasty as well but those brussel sprouts, mmmmm. Dessert was just as great we had the brioche bread pudding and the spring rolls filled with chocolate cake, worth the diet buster! We cant wait until we come back!

Nicely decorated area, ok food

By Steve Lewis |

This is a good place to chill out. Plenty of usb plugs available and plenty of single tables. Menu is limited. Dishes are good, with rather small portion. Taste is ok and it does not seem to be cook to order dishes Still a good place to wait for a flight

Love the food ambiance

By Pnut Travel Guidebook |

Looking for a place that is not too big or too loud but has the ambiance of a cool hole in the wall. THIS IS THE PLACE. I recommend making a reservation - this place is packed ALL the time but they do have a bar in case you are in the area and don't have a reservation. Try the server recommendations you will not be disappointed

Overrated

By SuzySP |

I dined at Shinsei with sushi loving friends, at their suggestion. It was a very trendy crowd, very dark, and incredibly loud! When you are seated, be sure and sit next to the person you want to talk to, because the tables are rather wide and you can barely hear the people across from you. The service was friendly and efficient. Believing as I do that raw fish is good for two things, bait and liver flukes, I chose Yama's House Salad and Shrimp Tempura. The salad was very vinegary and tasted like it had been left uncovered in the refrigerator and picked up other, random flavors. The Shrimp Tempura was very good, and a very generous sized serving. The Banana Parfait for dessert was very nice as well. We had a pleasant time, but really what's all the buzz about? I suspect this is the kind of place the trendy people want other trendy people to think they like.

Different Asian restaurant - very good

By Carleigh P |

I love going here for something different. The crispy rice is delicious as well as all the drinks. I also love the coconut dessert.

Suji (Elvis) is the best sushi chef in Dallas

By dantex |

I've followed "Elvis" from Anzu, to Tei Tei, to Shinsei and he is a true artist. We simply told him that we preferred sashimi (to rolls) and left the rest to him. We had 5 beautifully presented plates of delicately cut fish and flavors that bested any sushi we've had anywhere in Asia or Hawaii. Our waitstaff (Kelly, JP and Casey) were all very friendly and eager to help. The restaurant has a cool, funky Asian feel and is very comfortable and inviting. It's always a great night when we dine at Shinsei.

Delicious food and great service !!

By Richard L |

What a fantastic place ! Food was really delicious and service excellent. We had a table for five and after some drinks went straight for a mixed menu of shrimps, rice, sushi, wraps .... Quality was superb. Atmosphere fantastic. Definitely recommend this restaurant. I was invited by friends so can't comment on the price ...

Great dinner

By HILCHA |

We had a reservation and were seated promptly. The restaurant was very crowded. The noise level is very high. Service was good. The food however was absolutely delicious. The scallops were tasty and the Brussels sprouts were fantastic. The salmon was the best. Very flavorful and a nice portion size along with the broccoli and rice. My only complaint was the noise level was so high it was difficult to have a conversation at our table.

Garbage food unfortunately, with one exception

By Adam B |

I hope our experience with food this bad wasn’t typical. You’ll notice I. The photo no crab in the cooler. The California roll was made with some kind of trout or cooked albacore and food coloring. No substitution was mentioned. It was awful. The bento box of seared tuna wasn’t seared but rather baked somehow and over-cooked to medium well. The rice for the bento was day old and what should be used for their fried rice but without being relooked was tough and chewy. We also ordered the fried rice which was also undercooked and was tough, dry, and chewy. The only saving grace was the ponzu sashimi with fresh jalapeño which was actually very tasty but not enough to offset two other completely botched dishes.

Way overpriced! Poor service!

By mshbnyehud |

OK. We loved the food, I'll admit it. After ordering edamame, which arrived very quickly, it took at least 30 minutes for the next course to come out. Some of us ordered sushi. some of us ordered first courses (small plates), and some of us ordered main courses. We were a party of 5 persons, so why did ALL the food arrive at one time, some of it cold (and had to be sent back)? Maybe the food tasted especially good because it took so long to come out. I think this place is over-priced.

Amazing Experience!

By Tara WS |

We had an amazing time at Shinsei on Wednesday night. Even in the middle of the week, we found the restaurant crowded and on a wait list at 7:30. The food and service were great, and the atmosphere very Chique! It is a definitely "must visit" when you are in Dallas. We have also used Shinsei to cater multiple functions in our home, and they did an wonderful job. At our Russian Christmas party, they even made Russian dishes that weren't on their normal menu, and our Russian friends/family said the borscht was the best they have tasted outside Russia! All in All, Shinsei is top notch. Don't miss it!

Average Sushi

By Jelena B |

Very nice place but sushi was average...If my husband said his favorite dish was the edamame from the 3 rolls and octopus sashimi he had, well I can't say it was worth the $100 tab. I had the volcano, it was ok. Friend recommended this place, we tried it and can't say we would go back, there are so many other better sushi places in Dallas than this one, I would have to disagree with the others' reviews on this one!

Great food, Excellent service, Enjoyable experience!

By 8Mmilesand100+countries |

Dinned there with a party of 16 and has an great experience. The atmosphere is chic for Dallas, yet very comfortable. Food: Good selection of sushi & sashimi. The fried asparagus was very tasty. The beef was a bit marginal (but who orders beef in a sushi restaurant anyway?). The Flounder sashimi is some of the best I have ever had. Wine list is decent with a typical 2X markup. More reds than one would expect. Service was very attentive without being annoying. This is more impressive with a 16 person table. Overall, a well-served meal and a decent value for the money.

Great sushi with a vibrant atmosphere

By DSeth |

Inventive and delicious sushi that never fails to please! Great, vibrant atmosphere with efficient service. The only drawback: the noise level so high that it's very difficult to maintain a conversation.

best sushi in Dallas

By cgkochel |

The owners of Shinsei have, at least at one time or another, been married to the finest chefs in Dallas. The food is excellent, atmosphere romantic and impressive. "elvis" the best sushi chef in Dallas is a master of this culinary art form. Shinsei, definately knows what's really going on.

Good local sushi in upscale setting

By haddad007 |

We have eaten here on many ocassions but took a few months off vacation because the quality of the fish had slipped in our opinion. Happy to report the quality was again very good. The scene is very vibrant. My only compliant is the service is very rushed with water spilled while pouring into the glass and wine missing its intended destination on several tries. Add this to overfilled glasses and the need to slow down is very evident. We will be back again.

Wonderful meal! A special place to eat in Dallas.

By ladyindallas |

We let our waiter chose our food and it was one of the best meals. This was during the Christmas holidays and I still remember that meal.

Always Delicious!

By wwfrench |

One of my favorite restaurants in Dallas when I am craving Asian food !! Start with the green beans tempura and the shishito peppers ! We had the rainbow and Shinsei rolls! Then all shared the shrimp fried rice and Brussel sprouts !! These are my favorite brussel sprouts in Dallas! We topped it off with a banana desert that tasted like bananas foster!! Yum!! Great atmosphere and one of their signature cocktails is my favorite - blood orange margarita !!

Fantastic Sushi!

By JW_Travels_World |

I was not expecting Dallas to have good sushi - but wow, this place is awesome. Expensive but I will definitely be back! Their fried rice might be the best fried rice I have ever had The sushi was great, ordered handful of rolls and pieces - all great quality and well prepared. In the entire family style meal I think the only think I would probably not order again was the popcorn shrimp - it was not bad, just did not stand out etc. Service was great, very quick and attentive. Overall would highly highly recommend Shinsei and I will absolutely be back.

Shinsei

By Cecil789 |

Quite a disappointmet if you're looking for Asian fusion. Paid a brief visit and tasted a few items. It's like a dark bar with deep fried battered food. Didn't give it a huge chance to show me what they could do, but got enough of a taste to know not to go back.

Solid food and fun atmosphere....

By Penny J |

Great sushi and cocktails! Wonderful energy and service. Not a place to have a business meeting or romantic interlude, however, if you want a fun Saturday night with family or friends - this could be your place. There are choices for the adventurous as well as the cautious sushi lover. Make sure and acquire a reservation at prime dinner hour and weekends as the wait can be substantial.

Great sushi

By KayBee89 |

I love coming here for creative rolls and great sushi. I got the hamachi sashimi and it was delicious. Very well done sashimi and the my friend had the tempura vegetables. I tried some of hers even though I tend to feel that this is only an option to those who won't eat raw fish. I'm so glad I was wrong -- the veggies were delicious and the tempura batter was perfect. Great service and a fun place to be!

Just left Shinsei for a dinner

By Consultingrd |

Just left Shinsei for a dinner our daughter took us to for our 51st. Wedding anniversary. We had been here before but it is becoming the best restaurant for celebrations in our family. We live in Florida and came to Dallas for Grandparents Day at Wesley Prep on Valentines Day the day before our Anniversary which is on the 15 th. We can’t believe how good everything was and how our two grand daughters {11 and 8) experimented and loved everything they tried thanks to the recommendations of our waiter Casey. Our grand daughter (11) even mentioned she would like all her birthdays celebrated here. Thanks Shinsei for a memorable anniversary! ,

A taste of the Orient

By Trenham Ian Weatherhead |

From the moment we stepped in to the restaurant we were beautifully looked after, eight adults and our two Grandchildren. We started with excellent Sushi, Shrimps, Honey Hosin Ribs and this was then followed by a wonderful selection of Fish, And Steak absolutely fantastic! Definitely worth a trip to this part of Dallas, Texas from London if you can't make it to the Orient! We were upstairs which I prefer, rather than the noisy downstairs area, definitely a place to visit

Above average food; way above average prices

By wirepaladin08 |

I've eaten at Shinsei twice recently and won't be rushing back. The food is good -- but really no better than that. It is a very noisy restaurant and many of the tables are very close together. Sometimes you have to almost yell to talk to people at your table. Wine and drink prices are very high. They push the specials hard. Shinsei is one of those places that when the bill arrives you wonder how in the world it could have gotten that high. I tend to avoid restaurants where I get that feeling so I'll pass on Shinsei from now on.

Pretty Place, Pretty People

By carlinemom |

Very good food, made perfectly and gorgeous to look at. I enjoyed sashimi and a couple of pieces of sushi, as well as a seaweed salad that was very different from your run-of-the-mill seaweed salad. The only thing I didn't like is that after we were seated, we waited for about 15 minutes for water and another 10 minutes until we were able to flag down a waiter and put in a drink order. After that, the service was a bit over the top.

Make reservations and yes still as good as ever

By SunshineJello |

Made reservations for a birthday party dinner, table was ready, service was prompt and we ordered sushi that was not on the menu, it was all great even dessert with a candle. Still a little pricey just because everything adds up but worth it for great food. Citrus sirloin tips great and fried rice were very good.

Sushi/Pan Asian with great style

By Shelly M |

Shinsei is open for dinner but on Friday, you can stop by for lunch. The sushi is so fresh and so good and Sushi Chef Elvis is iconic. My three favorite things are the edamame with Thai Chili spice, Thai fried rice with a farm fresh egg on top (the egg makes it, so don't get it without) and the crispy brussels sprouts - oh my! You will dream of these brussels sprouts! The atmosphere is upscale and friendly but parking is a literal pain. Don't get mad trying to park and decide to go somewhere else because you will miss out on this gem.

Rushed out the door!!

By Foodee6 |

By Texas standards the sushi is very good. Great vibe at the bar and fun crowd. Only negative was our waiter seemed in a hurry to get us in and out. Sushi is meant to be eaten in courses, relaxed and enjoyed. We will probably look for a place that has a better pace of dinner.

Really unique Asian Fusion menu

By Mike J |

Excellent. Food was fantastic! I had the seaweed salad that was made whit black seaweed. Very unique flavor. Decor was very relaxing. Ana was our server. Great attitude terrific service. First time there definitely not the last!

Probably my fav restaurant in the Dallas area. Where Top Chef finalist, Casey Thompson works. Have to try her Orange Ginger Braised Kobe Short Ribs. Out of this world. Great atmosphere and decor.

Food was good but valet lost car keys

By lala1232013 |

Ok food is not bad at all, but place is crowded and loud. Went midweek full place they do not take reservations. No place to park so I had to valet. I usually avoid when I can but in this place no way out. After an ok meal the valet could not find my keys. After 20-30 min they discovered they had dropped them in another car. Fiasco!!! My advice is either park on ur own or go another place

The best Asian in Dallas

By CarlaEb |

This is by far the best Asian restaurant in Dallas. Shinsei is the whole package: location, food, service, drinks, and ambience. You can seat (and eat) at the bar or make a reservation for one of their dinning areas. The fried rice is a must! I also love their brussels sprouts! If at the bar, try their cucumber martini. Make a reservation so you dont have to wait. This is also a very nice place to big groups (they have a whole separated area for big groups / celebrations)

Top sushi anywhere

By Austinamherst |

Shinsei is a regular stop for me as one of the best restaurants that should rank nationally. The uniqueness of a neighborhood feel, a great staff, awesome food and a lively atmosphere, this should be a regular spot for Dallas diners or anyone wanting to find the spot where the locals frequent.

Fantastic Dining Experience

By Dr Pete |

With a variety of dietary restrictions, including vegans and gluten free, executive chef Carlos was extra accommodating for our group. The highlights at the table of 14 were the fried rice (amazing flavors), beef cheek, ribs and of course the outstanding variety of sushi. The entire serving team could not have been more attentive, especially our server Stella. In talking with friends, this has always been a great choice, and as someone who dines around the world....you must give it a try.

5-star food but less than 0 on service

By IdaMaeSlade |

About a month ago reservations were made for a Saturday dinner, at opening hour of 5PM, to celebrate a child's birthday, which is why that hour was chosen, knowing it would not be busy. We were a party of seven and were seated upstairs which was quiet and quite nice. We were there about 1.5 hours total, during which time only one other table had diners, and another server, which means that our female server was not at all busy or rushed. At first she seemed friendly enough, but a bit scattered we thought when she seemingly chose not to bring more than one copy of the printed daily specials to our table. Once we learned there were other printed choices, rather than the regular menu, we asked for extra copies, which she finally brought, upon request, along with an attitude. Then when the birthday girl (5 years) had two spills, which her mother cleaned up immediately, she really got bothered, rolling her eyes and leaving her smile behind and didn't bother to return for awhile. We did spot her talking with other staff members at the bar however. My partner and I, first- time diners there, which we mentioned to her, each chose an entree with one shared side, which she couldn't seem to remember who ordered it or where she put it. When she later asked if we needed anything I mentioned the missing side, only to be told she placed it at the other end of the table, beside another diner, because she didn't know who ordered it. REALLY?????? She hadn't lost her voice so why couldn't she simply ask? So, what did she do? She actually removed the plate from the other diner who thought the side came with her meal and had eaten into it, then brought it to us. REALLY???? Extremely rude and disgusting behavior. Rather than leave it with the diner who had taken a few bites and gotten us another one, free of charge, because it was her error, no, she showed zero lack of care or concern that she removed food from one diner and then expected us to eat off of another's plate after the other diner had bitten into it. ABSURD! Never once did she bother to refill our water glasses, but did seem attentive to those who ordered alcoholic beverages. Hmmmmm. The other five diners have previously dined here on several occasions, and enjoy it enough to return. We would probably choose not to return based on the inattentive service and also believe the prices are high and parking is iffy if one chooses not to use valet. Also, the server did absolutely nothing to enhance our dining experience, knowing we were celebrating a birthday and that two of us were here for the first time. We were invited guests so we did not pay for our meals, but definitely would not have offered her much of a tip after that episode. When restaurants are crowded and busy we certainly can understand if a server is rushed and juggling many plates, but that was not the situation here. This gal just seemed too dizzy, or disinterested, or completely unhappy with her work so why bother to return when there are many other options with far better service?

Delicious meal and outstanding service

By zihuatcat |

We had reservations for 4 at 8p on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately at a table close to the bar. It was a little noisy but we didn't find it all that intrusive. Our server let us take plenty of time in choosing our food and drinks. We never felt rushed. We started with the tuna tartare, the only disappointment of the evening. We all agreed it was bland and fairly tasteless. We then shared the pressed sushi, Tracy's special roll, flounder sushi, salmon roe, and octopus. All was delicious and fresh. To end the meal, we shared the citrus marinated beef tenderloin which literally melted in our mouths. I think Shinsei will become a regular sushi place for us because it's so good and, I think, reasonably priced.

Consistently good food

By Lori N |

I always enjoy going here. My favorites are the shishito peppers (flash fried), thai fried rice, braised short ribs over noodles, and the brussels sprouts. Lots of good sushi choices. Nice wine list.

a very unusual asian restuarant

By veer sagar s |

Shin Sei is a very unusual Asian restaurant with a menu which is different.. It has some of the most wonderful starters. The choice for vegetarians was also good. The highlight of the meal was the massive candy sticks. A must have end to the meal.

Ok Sushi but not the best

By Michaela |

If you want a place that is close to the Park Cities area, it would be one that you should check out. That being said, it is definitely not a place for children and the service was average. If you want fresh excellent sushi, definitely go to FiveSixty at the top of Reunion or Nobu. You definitely will not be disappointed.

Saturday Evening Dining

By southtexasgirl53 |

The food here is good, though a little pricey, but if you are interested in the total dining experience, be aware that it is very noisy in the dining area. Most seating is banquette, with a long bench along the wall. The table is very narrow, but deep, so you are much closer to the diner at the adjacent table than you are to you dining companion. This, plus the noise level makes conversation very difficult. The atmosphere was more casual than expected, it seems to be a place for families to stop by on their way home from a soccer game. Service was somewhat hurried, and parking is valet. finding self parking would be very difficult. This was a second visit, the first on a week night was much more pleasant and less hurried. All in all, I would say there are better choices for the price.

Returned to compare

By haddad007 |

Well, this was my last review on 11/28/11. "We have eaten here on many ocassions but took a few months off vacation because the quality of the fish had slipped in our opinion. Happy to report the quality was again very good. The scene is very vibrant. My only compliant is the service is very rushed with water spilled while pouring into the glass and wine missing its intended destination on several tries. Add this to overfilled glasses and the need to slow down is very evident." We will be back again. Well, we went back last night. The place was PACKED. We were offered 2 tables in the bar over a 45 minute span which we turned down (TOO LOUD) until we got one in the dining room. The service still rushed but the kitchen VERY slow. After 2 1/2 hours we finished. Ordeal....Yes. Fish quality good but not worthy of the price. Why do we return. We all decided for the scene. Pretty weak reason to spend $300 for 3 but.........

Great cozy atmosphere

By Spunky01 |

The food was wonderful as always. Sydney was excellent. It is a cozy friendly atmosphere and the wait staff is always accommodating and friendly.

Great food!

By Greenvilledan |

We celebrated my daughter's new job with dinner at Shisei. They have complimentary parking in front and parking is crazy bad on your own. We had a great coconut chicken jalapeño appetizer, and sushi. I had a haddock dish which was wonderful and my wife had cod. Our daughter was very pleased with her sushi. For dessert we had a chocolate tempura and banana dessert. The service was good. We were seated next to the bar and it was very noisy. A plus was as we were leaving another couple was entering. The man held the door for my family as we left. The man was over 6 ft 9 inches. We were waiting for our car at the valet when another tall man got out of his car with his friends. It was Dirk Nowitski the Dallas Maverick basketball player.

Fantastic meal for a very reasonable price

By cuhnayjun |

The first thing that struck me was the music: sound like 80s rock music - but this is a sushi place - so very atypical of what I expected. The food and service, however, are fantastic. Started out with a variety of finger foods, all beautifully presented as I would have expected. The courses were all within the $15-30 range, and not small either. The miso soup seemed a bit bland, maybe it need a touch of salt, but the tempura shrimp was well-done The green tea following was in a tea pot that could have served as a boat anchor, but kept it piping hot! :-) A range of desserts was offered, but I can't honestly see how anyone could eat dessert after a filling meal here. Definitely recommended.

Outstanding dinner and great service!

By Alice D |

First visit and won’t be the last. It is a very active, popular place! Food is outstanding and decor lovely. A neighborhood feel for sure. Everyone knew the Waiters, as well as other diners. It is a little loud when crowded but could still carry on a conversation. Sushi was superior. Valet parking

Excellent food and atmosphere

By EAGR13 |

Went with another couple on a Friday night. Tons of people and very vibrant atmosphere. Tried quite a few things, and they were all very flavorful and delicious. Short ribs were great as was all the sushi. Only complaint would be they were out of two of the things on their menu we wanted to try despite one being listed as a special. Otherwise fantastic.

Shin Sei is always a good idea.

By Jordan G |

Such a good atmosphere for dinner. If you come here it's worth it to save it for a special occasion and just order multiple dishes and try everything. Don't miss out on the fried rice, shishito peppers, or snow ear mushroom salad (and lots more everything's good)

Endured Time

By haddad007 |

By all accounts this restaurant should not be the "place" for sushi in Preston Hollow. Its been open for "ages" by groovy restaurant standards, its expensive, its loud and so on. BUT... it is the place to still go. The food was hit or miss for awhile last year. Particularly, the raw fish. It was actually, iodine tasting for some reason and we stopped going in spite of its other positives. We gave it another chance a few months ago and maybe they changed distributors but the fish was awesome. Fresh, crisp and firm. Elvis is still a bit serious and uptight but he turns out amazing creations. There is a wait almost every night unless you want the sushi bar or grab a seat if you can in the bar. The main room is loud but very cool. Traci and Lynae are great hostess. Its now back on our rotation.

One Favorite Sushi Restaurants in Dallas!

We are regulars so preface my review against that. They always have treated us well. They have a very good variety of sushi and non-sushi options. The Lobster Tacos, Pork Potstickers, and Crispy Rock Shrimp are our favorite appetizers. The Best mains are Dean's Chicken, Honey Hoisin Ribs, and Mahi. I am more of a sushi fan so tend to focus there. Its all fresh, with some good rolls (Flounder, Big Eye Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon & Japanese Snapper). Try the Elvis's Tartare! Great place to have your friends do a party (private room)

American style of Japanese food

By slh2012 |

I don't feel this place is authentic. Very Americanized Japanese restaurants, even the taste of it is just not right. Yet, it seems very popular, I suppose among Americans, but you won't see a Japanese or Asian customer, typically not.

Good Sushi with EXPENSIVE Wine

By Santos de Tejas |

The food at Shinsei is always good, the atmosphere is vibrant and our last visit was no exception. However, each time I return to Shinsei I am quickly reminded what I dislike. The wine prices are offensively marked up with most wines being marked up three and some four times what you can buy them for at a local retailer and much higher than other respected restaurants in town. Examples include the Belle Glos is sold at Hillstone for $53 vs. $68, Nosh sells the Meiomi Pinot for $40 vs $54 and Ferrari-Carano Siena sells at Total Wine for $14.50 vs $54 at Shinsei. The best "value" on the wine list during our last visit was the Round Pond Cabernet for $65 however the waitress was quick to announce that we had ordered the last bottle. This practice is obviously not keeping people from lining up to dine. We are what I would call "regulars" but each time the check arrives tucked away in the little book I feel as if I just read a horror story that is going to give me nightmares as the realization of what I just paid for a little raw fish and wine sets in. We love the food and the vibe at Sinshei but wish the owners would make the wine list and pricing a little more consumer friendly so that our next experience reads more like a good juicy novel rather than a Stephen King horror story.

Great place for Sushi et al

Best of many really good sushi restaurants taking over Dallas

A great surprise

By David A |

The restaurant gave us a real Dr Who tardis moment .... It's so much bigger ( and better ) on the inside than it looks from the outside. A nice warm friendly and professional greeting on arrival and as our table was not ready we sat in the small lounge bar area, the waitress was with us and took our drinks order quickly ... after a really lovely chat making us feel very comfortable!!! We were shown to our table in the upstairs dining room, passing through two ground floor dining areas to get there. Upstairs is quieter so if you are there for a special occasion, as we were, it's worth asking to be up there. The menu is very good and the food beautiful. Service was professional and quick with no feeling of being rushed to enable the restaurant to reuse the table. A great experience and if we find ourselves in Dallas again we would revisit.

Worst service

By Blaine M |

Worst service! We were there for 3 hours. The first appetizer was never brought out. Refilled our wine and charged us which we told them we didn't want anymore. Ordered sashimi and was brought out Brussels to go with our ribs first. An hour later we got our sashimi and an hour later we got our ribs. Very expensive. It's was just crazy! But luckily not in a hurry.

Very good food but very loud

By Jerri G |

We had a great 3-course restaurant week meal. Loved my calamari salad with mangoes, tiny banana slices and hearts of palm. Dressing was delicious and salad very generous. Though I had the snapper and risotto, I thought the most outstanding entree was the Ooey gooey chicken. The sauce was too die for! Oh, I could eat that any time! I thought the risotto was very bland but the texture was right. Generous portion again. Liked the chocolate cinnamon cake and also the ginger snap banana parfait very much. It was in a shooter glass. Very good food but for me, restaurant noise level way too high. Had to yell for my hubby to hear me across the table as did my friend next to me. Had an 8 pm reservation. Maybe earlier might be quieter?? :)

Good food but too expensive

By OK-NC |

My wife and I visited Shinsei while in town for a wedding and thought the food was good but too expensive. Steamed buns were incredible, however most of the sushi was very basic. Good ambiance inside but we sat upstairs which was very loud. Servers were nice and helpful, but slow. Shinsei is worth a visit for a special occasion and if you don't want sushi, otherwise just skip it.

Creative Sushi

The wait staff immediately brought us our water, which was garnished with cucumber slices. The restaurant has worked with a new mixologist and has very refreshing cocktails on the menu. We normally try the Thai Chili Edamame for an appetizer (which is wonderful), but last night we split the chicken jalepeno poppers and the lobster tacos. Both were very good. But - - the best part - - -- diner! My favorite dish was the Hawaiian sashimi. The Hiramasa fish from Japan is thin sliced and topped with sweet Maui onions and small pieces of dried banana. It sits in a Hibiscus vinegar, which nicely offsets the slight bit of sweet from the onions and bananas. Other favorites: the Ashby Roll (spicy tuna with a crab meet topping) and the Big Eye Tuna Sashimi - - - -and that tuna melted in your mouth. Finally, they have a seasonal dessert on the menu: a pumpkin bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. That was a party in my mouth! The wait staff was very knowledgeable about the menu and could answer any question that we had. They also knew how to modify certain dishes to combat food allergies. On the downside: it is a little pricy, and the tables are close together so it can get a bit loud when the crowd gets there. But, the food and service far offset any negative. This is our favorite sushi restaurant in Dallas, and we probably eat sushi once or twice per week.

Great food

The restaurant has amazing food. The noise level is very high so not good for intimate dining. Order several dishes and share, good wine and sake list.

Date Night with the Wife = Success

By Cody W. King |

Shinsei is easily one of the best restaurants that Dallas, Texas has to offer. The wife and I were out visiting some of her relatives and decided to have a date night. They recommend that we give Shinsei a try, and we could not have been happier that we did. The restaurant itself is trendy and well decorated, and features a terrific Pan Asian menu complete with an interactive sushi bar. The minute we were seated, the wait staff hurried out our water which featured cucumber slices. We started out our meal with the Garlic Pork PotStickers appetizer (which were delicious). For our main course, my wife went with one of Shinsei's MANY different sushi options, and I decided on the Citrus Marinated Beef Tenderloin with poached red onion and whipped potatoes. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her sushi as it was extremely fresh and tasty. As far as my Citrus Marinated Beef Tenderloin goes, I don't even know where to begin...It was EASILY the BEST STEAK THAT I'VE EVER EATEN (which says A LOT coming from me considering that I am undeniably a steak man and an excellent cook myself, being a firefighter by profession)!?! On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, I give Shinsei a solid 10. I HIGHLY recommend Shinsei to anyone who visits Dallas. I will be returning myself the next time that the wife and I are out west of the Mississippi.

Fun dinner

By Dollface23 |

We came for dinner right from the airport to meet friends. We were new to this restaurant...what fun. It has a great vibe and excellent food. The restaurant was packed. We were lucky to be seated in a small room with just a few tables. If we were in the large room it would have been very difficult to hear anyone. The food was great. We were a party of eight so we got to try many items on the menu. It was a fun and tasty experience.

When you want the best

By Chadwick F |

This is one of the highest quality sushi places in dallas. For the actual food, it is top tier. The service is impeccable, but it is generally a bit more casual than other places with this caliber food. Uchi and Tei-An are the other two places I have dined at that go toe-to-toe with shinsei for deliciousness, but both of those restaurants are more formal, as well as have a little more eclectic menus. The hot rock beef, the Braised Pork Steamed Buns and the Lobster Tacos are all amazing, if you aren't diving in for rolls and raw fish. I cannot stress this enough though: if you like salmon, or sushi at all, you HAVE to try the Esping Sashimi. I have ordered it 3 times in one meals before. It is absolutely my favorite thing on the menu.

Upscale Neighborhood Place

By J Person |

Shinsei has made the transition from hot and happening sexy Asian fusion restaurant to reliable neighborhood place. We came as a family to celebrate a birthday. The interior is still a bit dark, with modern, sharp lines. Our server was helpful, and made good suggestions. The food is good across the board. We pretty much kept ordering appetizers to share and everybody got fed. We started with the shishito peppers, which are nicely charred--my only issue is that the heat of individual peppers varied widely. The tempura veggies are awesome--crispy, well-cooked, with the regular dipping sauce. We shared the fried rice--moist and flavorful--along with the lettuce wrap chicken. The chicken is nicely cooked and seasoned. We then ordered the spicy tuna roll, and the texture was excellent with good heat. We shared the crispy shrimp as well. We also like to try brussells sprouts at any restaurant offering it, and Shinsei's version is uniformly great--not undercooked, and seasoned really well. We finished with several desserts--the chocolate cake and banana parfait in particular are worth trying if you like dessert. What we did not order: there is a terrific whole fried fish which I have had before. With a bunch of drinks, the 5 of us got out of there for about $150 before tip. Shinsei has been around so long you tend to forget about it, but it is an excellent dinner option. Note that there really isn't much parking, but there is valet right out front.

Dinner in Dallas

By Okie-Babs |

I wasn't overly impressed! The food was average. None of our items stood out with interest. I thought the food was bland. The restaurant was quite noisy. The ladies at the table next to us were yelling at each other, which made it even more difficult to enjoy our meal. The temperature of the room was beginning to get very warm. I don't care to return. We went on a Saturday night. i would recommend another evening other that a weekend night.

Good

By NomadingNick |

Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4/5 Decor & Style: 5/5 The Slow Braised Short Ribs and Wagyu Beef Cheek were both good. The cheek was a little chewier than I wanted it to be but it was still tasty. Service was on par and the decor was dim but modern. Overall everything was what I expected it to be. No 5/5 because there was not any 'wow' factor but I still enjoyed the entire experience.

Fun evening - Food average

By Sophie D |

The service was great and the waiters did a wonderful job as well as anyone in the staff at the restaurant. Ambience is nice but the food was very average. Uni shooters are much better at Nobu. This is a fun place for cocktail hour and sharing a few items of food. I would not recommend going for the food only!

Great food

By Lyn R |

The food and atmosphere is great. Service is usually good as well. Parking can be a hassle with valeting the car directly from a very busy street. There is a self-parking area at te end of the block - close enough to walk if you don't want to dive out of the car with the valets in traffic!:). Great experience once you get in there.

No fortune Cookies needed!

Good Asien cuisine is hard to find where I live in Northern California. So much to my surprise literally right around the corner from my favorite movie theater (Inwood theater and lounge, at Lovers Lane) was this jewel of a restaurant. Hostess greeting us with a big smile, no reservations, no worries. Once seated at the Bar, we enjoyed not only a full menu that would make vegans or carnivores happy, but a bartender that made a yummy vodka gimlet. Unpretentious, reasonably priced and sexy interior, high marks all around.

Fabulous place to celebrate birthdays

By DianneReed |

Shinsei (Japanese word for genuine, authentic) was absolutely the best place to celebrate my husband’s birthday. A low key, sophisticated atmosphere describes this delicious destination. Shinsei has developed quite a following over it’s ten year history. My husband and I could certainly understand why because the positive energy, chef inspired cuisine and service was stellar. My husband and I wondered if we would be able to find a restaurant here in Dallas with the same quality and service we loved while living overseas and we found it here at Shinsei. THANK YOU Francisco and Carter for making my husband’s birthday celebration such a special one!! We can’t wait to come back!!

Way Overrated

By NewNoble |

My fiance and I heard nothing but good tihngs about how delicious this restruant was, so we went for a date night for some sushi. Whomever toldus it was the best missed the mark. While the modern atmosphere is inviting and right up our ally, the food fel way flat. First of all, it was overpriced, WAY overpirced. second, it was TERRIBLE! The sushi was made with rice wihch was too big and the crab srping rolls contained WAY TOO much mint! Yes... mint! It was no bueno. If you are looking for a hip atmosphere, go here. If you are looking for good sushi... run far away!!!

Amazing Dinner

By Bill J |

Went to this place with friends when we were visiting Dallas. It's a little hard to find and seemed to only have valet parking but the food is amazing. The 6 of us shared several appetizers and then each ordered an entrée. I had the biggest and best pan seared scallops that I have ever seen. My wife had sushi and raved about it. All in our party truly enjoyed the experience. Our server Joanna and all that helped her did an outstanding job. This restaurant is a North Dallas treasure!

Amazing

By tjap1969 |

Came here with a friend and our 2 boys. We were in town for Dallas cup soccer tournament. Came here on a recommendation. Boy were we not disappointed. Everything we eat was amazing from the rock shrimp tempura to the Brussels sprouts, short rib dumplings, pressed sushi roll and everything in between. Our server Joanne was amazing as well and helped us figure out which movie theaters were the best to go to after our dinner. Would definitely go back anytime I am in dallas

A must experience

We were a business party of 5 and what an excellent experience it was. Happy was our server was outstanding, the support staff was also a tentative but not intrusive. Shrimp Thai fried rice, chicken wrap, cotton candy dessert is to die for. Check out this Wasabi potato- delicious. Give it a try!

Really good food for which you pay handsomely. Minus one star for price.

Wow! What an amazing experience at Shinsei! The food is awesome! We tried the raw Flounder, Baby Tuna, and the Brussel sprouts all were amazing! The atmosphere was energetic and fun! After 10 they turn the bar into a dance place with a DJ. Super fun! We can't wait to go back!
