A superb French brasserie in Hollywood

By David G |

I've been to Shirley Brasserie four times, including another excellent dinner in early September. It just keeps getting better. Very warm, welcoming hostess; efficient and knowledgeable server; gorgeous decor; and stellar French food. The escargots were as good as any we've had in Paris. The perfectly cooked duck breast and sumptuous boeuf bourgignon on a bed of creamy mousseline potatoes could not have been better. This place is a bit off the beaten path -- on the main floor of the Roosevelt Hotel -- but don't let that deter you from discovering it. In a town overly full of Italian restaurants, it's refreshing to find a French establishment that gets the brasserie formula just right. Don't miss it!

You must go to The Shirley at The Roosevelt hotel

You probably cannot do much better than this in Los Angeles. This is French food, prepared with fresh ingredients. It is exquisite. Branzino! Tomato salad- Sure you’ve had them before, but this is different. They are at an extremely high-level and frankly the prices are reasonable considering the feast you will enjoy. Who does a proper peach Melba anymore. THEY DO. We are well-travelled foodie snobs. Please listen to us on this one ALSO The staff - Ron the manager, Nathan the waiter and Anastasia the hostess- professional and genuine. GO HERE. xo. @lealahewak

Dinning in a historic setting.

Fine dining in a landmark location. The open kitchen delivers excellent choices from a fabulous liver pate appetizer to a broad variety of main dishes including fish, steaks and pastas. The onion soup is special, as are all of the well plated dishes. A great cocktail can be consumed in the historic, and impressive lobby, or at your table, be it a booth or private room. Great service. Beautiful setting. A very safe "go to" dinner!

Hidden in the Roosevelt But Worth Looking For

Perfect food, awesome service, and a wonderful venue in a great hotel. I ordered the steak which was wood fired and brought that great taste to a perfectly cooked and tender piece of beef. Dessert was a mousse with perfect texture and flavours. Will be a regular visit when passing through LA.

Exceptional

Had a wonderful meal here on our last night at Hotel Roosevelt before heading back to England. The food was amazing and the staff were very helpful and courteous in accommodating us

Disappointing, but at least it's pretty

We had dinner at the Shirley Brasserie and it was one of the worst experiences we have had at a restaurant, especially one at this price point with this level of expectation. We had reservations at 7pm, but there was no host available and after waiting for several minutes we had to walk in and locate a waitress to find the host. Once seated, it was ten minutes before anyone approached us. Even then, it was a neighboring waitress who took pity on us and brought us water. Our waitress finally came over and asked us for water, which we already had. She then walked away without telling us her name or telling us about the menu. We sit for another ten minutes before she comes back and finally takes our order; we had to ask her name (Kristen). We tried the Mulled Wine cocktail, which was undrinkable - whoever decided to make this with gin, please reconsider. We then ordered wine. We ordered the Salmon Rillettes, which was very good. Our entrées were the Half Chicken, which was cooked perfectly but over-seasoned, side of green beans (would not recommend - flavors were all over the place in a bad way), and the Bone-In New York Steak. Everything about the steak was awful. Incredibly over seasoned, CHEWY to the point we are having to spit the pieces out after each bite, and paired with the literal worst bernaise sauce I've ever tasted (it was like flavorless egg smear). Our waitress offered to get a new steak, but at this point we assume the next will be just as bad, no use wasting two. To her credit, she brings us a dessert on the house, chocolate mousse, which was very good. What we had hope would be a delicious dinner in a beautiful restaurant ended up being a waste of time and money in a beautiful restaurant.

An amazing new dining option on Hollywood Blvd.

This French/California hybrid is brand new in Hollywood, and I’m so glad we found it. Located in the historic Roosevelt Hotel, we dined while staying at the hotel. We had a wonderful experience, and can’t wait to go back to try different menu offerings. My first compliment goes to the staff. It is great and too uncommon to find a staff that is genuinely enthusiastic about their restaurant. We talked to both the hostess and our server, and it was obvious they had tried everything on the menu, and they spoke knowledgeably and confidently about the quality of the food. Our party consisted of my wife and two teenagers, and we all loved what the staff helped us settle on. My daughter’s lobster pasta was delicious and had a lot of lobster in it. It had a nice chunk of lobster as a centerpiece, which was a pleasant surprise. The pasta and the chanterelles were shaped similarly, and that was really nice for getting great forkfuls. My son got the 12 oz NY strip. It was cooked perfectly medium rare at his request and was a beautiful cut of meat, seasoned beautifully. My wife’s salmon was delicious! She also got the green beans, and they were so good. I got the Branzino. SO AMAZING. It was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the presentation was spot on. I really wanted to try the Mushroom and black truffle risotto, but I so rarely see Branzino, I had to get it. Someone please try the risotto and let me know. The cocktails and desserts were also first class. The lemon meringue tart is renamed “Island” something and is served with ice cream. My family raved about it. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough! Cheers and enjoy!

Should have been a 5 stars review but..

Great place, great manager but : ..Our server was very short with us : telling us at 8.30 on a friday at night that we had to order both appetizers and main entree same time.. Food was really good at the end she dropped the bill with just the basic " thanks" .I asked her if the tip was really included ( which she never mentioned) and she look a little bit surprised by my question.. " Yes, but you can leave more if you like" and then leaves us..WOW! Our bill was close to $300 with the tips already included ..Our server was terrible ,she just did not care at all ..We had to ask for the desserts menu ..And then she try to get a double tip all that does not match at ll the place ..

Really really really good!

Of the 4 dinners we enjoyed in Hollywood, we spent 3 evenings here because we loved it from the very first moment. Extremely friendly service, food prepared to perfection, great grill that is masterfully operated by the chefs.

Roosevelt Hotel and Shirleys Could Not be Better

By Wander42900379087 |

Why this place isn't full every night is one very big question. We started in the Roosevelt foyer having cocktails and this was just great to enjoy the history of the building. We moved to Shirleys and had the sirloin and tuna as mains both prepared via the woodfired kitchen. Both were nothing less than mind blowing perfect. I can vouch for the steak it was melt in the mouth with palate busting flavour. The service was top notch and we finished with dessert which was nothing less than perfect as well. A must do experience.
