Good sushi in Center City

By T D |

We received a 20% off coupon during the cherry blossom festival and decided to try out this sushi restaurant in the city - just blocks away from city hall. Restaurant is small and simple decorated. Host and wait staff were friendly and worked fast. Food is priced averagely - not too expensive. We tried the fried oysters and some sushi rolls. They were delicious! We'll be back. I posted more pictures of the food on my other food blog - if you're interested: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Been-There-Ate-That/156499854368045

Try the Sashimi Here

By Rm_1272 |

My father and I stepped into Shiroi Hana right after 10 pm on a Friday night, and the hostess said there is 10 minutes remaining until last call. The place was about 50% packed and not too loud. The sashimi was of fairly good quality, the pieces were cut not too thick nor too thin, the texture for the salmon was the softest consistency I have ever experienced without being too mushy. The cut-roll that we ordered came with only 6 pieces (on the small side). The hand-roll that we ordered (despite the menu indicating that it would be in a cone shape, as they typically are), came in a peculiar rectangular shape, open on one of the short sides (unfortunately my cell ran out of battery so no picture). The fried oyster appetizer was also presented and cooked with proper care. This is a mid-scale place in terms of the whole experience with acceptable levels of service, I would stop by here again if I was in the area, but it is not a place that anyone needs to make a special trip out to.

Premier Sushi in Philadelphia

I love Shiro Hana. The interior is lovely and understated. The food always a step above, fresh and good size portions. The staff exceptional.

My favorite sushi bar in Philly

By Buckeye82 |

I eat here when I travel to Philadelphia and am eating solo. Love how quiet and unpretentious this place is. This is a restaurant for sushi lovers who crave fresh sushi made in the traditional way: no weird combinations or fancy names for rolls. Tea is delicious and the little old lady keeps it flowing.

Best sushi in Philly

By pearlmiriam |

Always fresh and delicious. Good service very friendly. Fried ice cream for desert. Just don't drink the wine. It's not good. Got sick on some plum wine once

Have made multiple visits to Shiroi Hana over the years, and they never disappoint.

By redkid333 |

Have made multiple visits to Shiroi Hana over the years, and they never disappoint. The food/fish quality is excellent and the service/staff are attentive and friendly. I usually get a sashimi platter for dinner or lunch. When I do order differently, their rolls/maki, nigiri/sushi are always a treat. Their sushi chefs create works of art that you can eat, with fish as fresh as can be. I have even had them cook me the hamachi kama that came right off the yellow tail they just got in. This is a location for sushi you can not go wrong with. I have never had a negative experience here and look forward to many return trips in the future. My only disappointment is that I do not work in Philly any longer, otherwise I would be there more often. Enjoy!! JayH

Very nice for take-out when staying locally

By mcglough |

Quick, easy, tasty and good value. I like to pop into Shiroi Hana on my way back from the office when I am in Philadelphia - it's close by my usual hotel so the food is still plenty hot when I get back to my room. I go there at least once per trip.

Birthday Dinner

Wonderful naked tuna roll!! Great fresh fish. Restaurant was so nice trying to accommodate us with a baby. Amazing service and really appreciate you making the birthday celebration special with yummy banana dessert.

Surprisingly good sushi...

By Steven T |

Surprisingly good sushi and thankfully not overcrowded.

Good food, decently priced

By Sai G |

Ate here twice in 2 weeks. Decent ambience and service overall. Tempura is really good and so are the rolls. The Teriyaki was awesome but the Sukiyaki was a let down. It was just a huge bowl with a lot of soup, not much flavor. The appetizers are good too. Decently priced and well worth a visit.

I love it :)

Bleak looking entrance but a good sushi restaurant inside

By Harry |

Delicious sushi in a typical setting. The place is wedged in by a parking garage on 15th near some bars but once you are inside it is a classic Japanese restaurant atmosphere. Service was friendly and sashimi/sushi was good.

Fresh and consistently high quality

By jacknmichaelsmom |

I eat here often for lunch. I've had several items on the menu, though I tend to order the sashimi roll most often as it gives me the most quantity and variety of fish without adding the rice. I recommend it without hesitation

Always always good

By jacquelinerose5 |

This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Philadlephia. And it is constant….always fresh fish, always great service, always clean, beautifully calm decor. If you don't know what to order, ask. The waitstaff knows everything and is totally helpful.

Good choice for sushi!

By Monica C |

Sushi slices are a pretty good size, and come at average prices. I ordered an avocado roll and a spicy crunchy tuna roll and both were really good! Clean. Cozy. Service was good too, just not 5 star-esque.

Tasty and plated pretty

By James S |

The restaurant has reopened to in-restaurant dining after Covid 19. It seemed dark and the big focus seemed to be on take out as the front of the restaurant is now a make shift pick up area. The restaurant seemed a bit messy with a lot of cardboard boxes stacked up and even a bicycle parked in the front of the restaurant. However even if the restaurant was messy and dark the food and the service was good. I got the deluxe sashimi plate and it was plated beautifully and the fish was fresh. It came with a salad and a bowl of brown rice. It was expensive but tasty and pretty to look at.

Definitely adding to my favourite places to eat in Philly!

By Bee_ALondon |

This cute restaurant serves fabulous sushi (recommend the eel or spicy salmon), melting sashimi and great miso. Highly recommend the agedashi tofu too. Ate (a lot) here twice within five days. Nice service too.

Good but not great.

By Kristen K |

I had omakase here and it was good, but nothing special. Chef was polite but I wish he would've taken the time to explain what I was being served.

Calm ambience, great service

By Sofia M |

Totally recommend. The food is great, quick, and the people who work there are so kind. The restaurant is quiet, perfect for conversation.

Tasty sushi

By NittanyLion70 |

We came here because of its proximity to the Kimmel Cultural Campus. I had the bagel and Philly rolls. Wife had the spicy tuna roll and another roll. Food was fresh and tasty. For dessert we had bananas foster tempura and chocolate lava cake. We will return.

Good sushi, small space

By Liz |

I stopped here with a colleague for dinner and was very pleased with our meal. We ordered a few rolls to share- philly roll, crunchy spicy tuna roll, Boston roll & Gyoza to start. The sushi was fresh & prepared quickly & the dumplings were hot & tasty. Next time I will opt to sit at the sushi bar and order one of the chefs choice meals for sure!

tasty seafood, reasonable prices, great location for theater and orchestra nights

By ktk19147 |

I guess because I've eaten here so often I forgot I hadn't reviewed it already, but this place is our go-to place for before-show or orchestra events because it's got a wide ranging menu for those who eat seafood especially. There are some succulent meat and veggie dishes also, although this wouldn't be a place to go w/ a group of strict vegetarians because it's a bit limited. It's great for sushi and sashimi (the just-fish dishes) because you can order these in so many different ways. If you don't feel like picking a la carte there's also a great deal on the two "special dinners" that cost a very reasonable $30. These involve miso soup + small salad w/ that delicious ginger dressing + a selection of sushi, sashimi, seaweed, and either chicken teriyaki + veggie tempura (they give you a lot here) OR salmon teriyaki + some sort of beef dish that all my tablemates enjoy. Then you get ice cream on top of that. Don't eat lunch beforehand! We've never had a bad meal here and we've been like 25 times and with multiple friends. I believe it's cheaper than Raw, which is another great sushi place. The setting is quasi-elegant, the service is good, bathrooms are clean, and the noise level is very low, making it easy to talk and hear conversation. Best during the colder months to either sit upstairs or away from the door, where it can blow in cold air. Since it's close to the Prince, the Academy of Music, the Wilma, and the Kimmel, it's a good place to go to before a show/concert.

Like being in Japan - wonderful.

By Harmonicaharold |

We were in Japan recently for 3 weeks and enjoyed the amazing food. Shiroi Hana is authentic and brings real Japanese flavors to Philly. Everything was delicious and service was impeccable. Can't wait to return.

good

By StevenIdahoFAN |

We were seated immediately in a booth and ordered the sushi and sashimi . Both were good.. Service was adequate but the only con was after a couple of hours I was hungry again since the meal was not that filling. I would order a salad on the side next time.

Fantastic Japanese Cuisine, Especially the Seafood

By David O |

Only one block from the fine arts world and a great place to have an outstanding Japanese dinner before any performance. Staff is sensitive to timing knowing many patrons are bound for the theater or other performing venues. We were late due to traffic for our reservation but they still held it for us. Outstanding seafood dinners of many varieties. Outstanding tempura. Outstanding traditional dishes.

The REAL deal Japanese

By Denise M |

If you want real Japanese food, cooked to perfection, or amazing sushi, this is the place to go. Nestled on 15th Street, it has been there for over 30 years and Mitchiko, the head waiter has been there almost as long. She is an adorable Japanese mamasan who loves her customers and takes such great care of everyone. We love coming here to just unwind, have a zen experience eating some of the best food in the city. Shiroi Hana is just wonderful from A-Z. I personally love the agetofu, the negimaki, their seaweed salad and the tuna tartare- the best in the city. My husband always orders the sushi deluxe, the best in the city for the price. Worth going to again and again!

Outstanding fresh sashimi

By Talentisageless |

This small restaurant is my go to during my many visits to Philly. Wonderful location and varied menu. Order the multi grain rice but stay away from tempura since the coating is done with a heavy hand. Shrimp shumai are very good. The atmosphere is intimate and the cost for most dishes is reasonable.

Tempura Heaven

By Philly Viking |

This Japanese restaurant is a great place for Tempura and Sushi selections. The service is excellent and the food is always fresh and served with excellent presentation. Be sure to make reservations as this place is almost always very busy.

Soothing ambiance and delicious sushi

By MABM917 |

I recently moved to Philadelphia from Manhattan where it seems like authentic Japanese places have disappeared. Where I lived (West Village) had mostly Chinese/Japanese restaurants with a Chinese restaurant vibe I walked into Shiroi Hana and was immediately soothed by the ambiance. It was serene. I sat at the sushi bar and had 3 pieces of sashimi, a roll and a glass of wine. Everything was perfect.

Sushi Love for two is a great dish to try a little of everything!

Beautiful Restaurant

By DublinKH |

We had sushi appetizer, sashimi appetizer, inattentive, and tempura appetizer for our appetizer. Chirashi had plenty of fish. The restaurant is very clean and staff was very professional. It was reasonable for the meals. We used a 15% off coupon which I had to print out from their web site and had to pay by cash. It was great.

It's OK

By Gene L |

The restaurant was nice, but I thought the rolls were just okay. Warm towles to wipe hands, service was good, but when I wanted to order another roll it took a while to get the servers attention.

Very good sushi, friendly service

By Charly255 |

I spent an evening there with a colleague of mine, and we found it an enjoyable experience. The item on the menu called "sushi love" offered a wide range of sushi and maki rolls that tasted very good. We found the list of sake wines on the menu quite interesting, and we very much enjoyed the two that we tried. The atmosphere of the restaurant is simple yet friendly, and our waitress radiated calm and hospitality. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes sushi.

Excellent choice by the little one

By Chuck C |

My younger daughter wanted noodles and would not be denied. I'll admit that we used Yelp... but this place was awesome. Authentic, excellent seasoning, quiet atmosphere so different than the streets of Philly just outside. Set lunches were excellent and a great deal. All around top notch.

Reliable delicious and quick

By FellowTaveler2 |

Great place for a pre-concert sushi etc meal, non-pretentious atmosphere but very tasty Japanese food. Not a place that pushes the envelope with creativity, but very good selection.

By animaleyedoc |

got home from nyc late and decided to go out for a bite...restaurant is 100 yards from our apartment and at 8 p.m. on a tues night it was busy...decor nice, staff nice, menu lots of choices...ordered seaweed salad, pork dumplings, variety of sushi, glass of wine and a glass of beer (for me) and finally fried banana with ice cream...everything was great, the staff attentive and we have found our sushi place here in the city of brotherly love..it would take a lot to replace this restaurant for us for sushi..

Japanese restaurant tucked away on 15th Street

By Elisabeth B |

Tucked away next to a parking garage on 15th Street near Locust Sreet, Shiroi Hana could easily be missed were it not for the recommendation of regulars and their word of mouth. I like to stop at Shiroi Hana for a light evening meal before going to a concert at the nearby Kimmel Center. I have never been disappointed even by such a standard offering as shrimp tempura. It is light, fresh and tasty, keeping the senses alive for what comes next at the Kimmel. You might sit at the sushi bar or at a small table and the service is prompt and efficient. There are specials every evening and the regular evening menu for more serious diners is extensive. Being a light eater, I might try the Medusa Roll next. Time to go. Enjoy your meal!

Good ambiance fresh sushi

By blake0821 |

Chirashi had lots of fresh fish, squid app was good and my husband enjoyed Japanese steak with multi grain rice. It is always a good sign to see Japanese patrons which means the food must be good! We topped off with Mochica and Japanese tea. I hope this was a good choice for pre race the night before half marathon! Loved the light fixture by sushi bar!

Great Salmon Teriyaki

By Drumtale |

Very tasty salmon teriyaki. The sauce has a sweet quality to it and is quite wonderful. Their lunch box specials are plentiful and a decent value. I've become quite fond of the restaurant.

So good!

By Sofia425 |

So good! The sushi here is excellent. The food tastes fresh, and everything was delicious. The presentation was pleasing to the eye, and the waitress was friendly and attentive. The space feels warm and inviting despite the minimalist design. We will definitely return!
