Great setting

By Susan Y |

Huge back porch on the creek- food truck with crawfish and lots of beer choices- great start. One of us had a great hamburger and the others had the crawfish etouffee. Never had it with “blonde” roux - but it was terrific. Service was perfect. Only problem was parking- we were blocks away - but it was worthwhile.

There's nothing New Orleans about this place

By Wilbert P |

Serving shrimp and crawfish and showng Louisiana team games does not count as using the name New Orleans style, big deception paying attention to the sign. Please if you're from Houston or New Orleans or have tasted the amazing flavor in either don't get your hopes up. I hate it when people borrow a name but don't even try to present the flavor. I played it safe to not be too dissappointed on something no one could screw up, a burger. On the flip side good game day hang out and place to drink.

Up the Creek

By Joseph B |

I can't find catfish in the UK, so visiting Texas, having some catfish was high on my agenda. I happened upon Shoal Creek Saloon and decided to give it a try. The service was warm and friendly. I ordered a catfish basket, which comes with hushpuppies. I added fries and cole slaw as sides. I found the catfish tasty, although the fries and slaw weren't extraordinary, but adequate. If you sit out back, there's a nice view of the creek. I enjoyed my visit and found it met my needs.

Louisiana style food. Service was pretty good as well as the food. I ordered the 1lb smoked pork chop. Some nice scenery in the back outside patio.

Austin's best pork chops. High quality meals at affordable prices

By LAMERV20 |

I have eaten many pork chops in my day. Most of the time they are dry and needed some sauce to cover them up. Not this one. This is simply the best , juiciest chop I ever had. I came into Austin with 2 days to enjoy. My associates offered up if I wanted to go to Shoal creek Saloon and I said why not. They raved about the food here and it didn't disappoint. I ordered their famous Pork Chop which came with mash potatoes and gravy with green beans. Everyone on the table ordered different meals such as the Roast beef Po boy that can feed two, country fried steak, burger with habanero cheese and bacon, shrimp po boy sandwich, grilled tuna and other dishes. out of the 8 people 6 of us was dining for the first time. Every meal was great. I don't know why they don't offer sweet tea here in Austin but the Ice tea was refreshing in 100 degree heat. The tables were nice and had big screen TV's throughout the room. I would definitely come back here again. Total cost of my meal was 7 dollars without tip.

Classic S Louisiana Cuisine In A Real Saloon

By Conseiller99 |

This place is the real deal! Dining inside and out in nice weather. A real saloon with a lot of TVs and excellent food! Loved the crawfish boil....you do it by the pound; excellent etoufee; and terrific chicken fried steak....complete with mashed and white gravy. Perfect! Nice local beers on tap; really nice staff; very reasonable! Don’t miss this place! A little bit of chicken fried, cold beer on a Friday night....just like the Zac Brown song goes.....

Good Food, Sports TV without the Yelling

By Monica M |

So. Big shout out to the place that has sports on the TV but doesn't feel like a sport's bar--I can have delicious Southern Louisiana comfort food and watch some sports without feeling like I'm going to be tackled by loud noises, chicken wings, or stray beer mugs.

Excellent crawfish

By TJP55857 |

Fried shrimp was very good and the crawfish boil was terrific! Oysters on the half shell were also top notch. We will be going back!

Crawfish Pot Pie

By Paige R |

While we waited outside for our table, we had a beautiful view of Shoal Creek. We chose to eat outside because the weather was beautiful. I ordered the Crawfish Pot Pie and it was delicious!

Crawfish Delish

By Claw1974 |

Great spot for some beer and crawfish in Austin. Nothing fancy, just some good people and good food. Nice to sit on the outdoor porch when the weather is nice.

OK Food at a Decent Price

By MichiganBanjoMan |

The Cajun gumbo had a good flavor, although the andouille sausage was quite bland. The fried spicy green beans are deep-fried with a coating; although they were tasty, they certainly aren't for the diet-conscious. We split a huge oyster po' boy sandwich; the oysters were plentiful, but had very little flavor. Beer and wine prices are very reasonable, and the service was excellent.

Good Selection of New Orleans Style foods

By EMB08 |

Stopped in this place late on a Tuesday night. They had some special of crawfish, but I decided to have the smoked duck gumbo, great choice as well. I also had the catfish, another solid choice. Seems they have some special every night of the week on their foods, so check ahead as I can see this place gets a crowd. Nothing fancy inside, but well prepared foods.

Worth The Wait!

By Jim T |

I have driven past this place literally hundreds of times over the years and finally managed to stop in and check it out. We sat in the bar area (sports on TV) and were pleased with our food. The gumbo was very tasty, and the catfish was also done right. Service was pleasant and quick. There is a small parking area and outdoor seating form nicer weather. Can't wait to go back to try their pork chop special!

Cajun bar in Austin.

By catchyginger |

Shoal Creek Saloon is a cajun-themed bar/restaurant on South Lamar. It is a pretty casual, chill spot with a great outdoor patio. In nice weather, it is tough to beat. There are also plenty of TVs to watch the games. Of course, during football season, the Saints are on. As for the food, it is decent bar food. They often have Crawfish if that is your thing. I recently had the shrimp Po'Boy which was good, but I have had better. The shrimp were lightly fried and the bread was tasty. Add a little hot sauce and it was good. The gumbo was a little on the bland side. I like mine a little more spicy. All in all, still a nice treat. They have Abita beer for those who may be fans. I recommend coming here and sitting on the patio. It is quite pleasant.

Best Cajun and Creole spot in Austin by far!!

By Colby P |

Tried Shoal Creek Saloon for the first time with friends tonight and we got a plethora of dishes offered here. We are just in heaven about everything that we tried. Some highlights are the crawfish queso, boudin balls (both regular and crawfish), Ahi Tuna steak, Gumbo, and crawfish etouffee for starters. We also enjoyed the bread pudding and cobbler. Everything was true to creole dishes. Best we've all had in a while!!

Good but not Great

By Pearl M |

Shoal Creek Saloon is a fun place to hang out but the food is just average. We had the Cajun Gumbo which was dark and smokey but we've had better even here in Austin. The oysters on the half shell were tasty. The catfish po'boy was a disappointment. The coating on the fish was tasteless and the fish was so thin, the sandwich was mostly bread. I will say, the staff, were friendly and efficient, putting tables together for our large party. There was no problem with asking for seperate checks. I give them a 4 star rating.

A taste of cajun with a good location

By supraner |

Enjoyed the view of the water, turtles, ducks while enjoying the food. Not enlighted cajun but satisfied an itch. Redfish was cooked perfectly, a cup of jambalya that was different but tasty. Those with crawfish seemed to be enjoying them. Service was prompt and efficient.

Good Food and Cold Beer

By Janice V |

The fish, shrimp, and oysters were all wonderfully fried in a cornmeal batter. I don't usually go for fried foods, but it was suggested by my friend. I was not disappointed!!!

Great food, relaxing experience

By Snoopyhead |

I brought my son and his friends there for lunch on his birthday weekend. The deck in the back was very peaceful with a nice view of Shoal Creek and Duncan Park. They had a great time and the food was very good with large portions. The Cajun food, étouffée, was very good also and tasted like I've eaten in Louisiana. Give it a try!

Price is right & the food was good! I would say the best seafood place in downtown.

By tiggerock |

We ordered Oyster (Oyster was average. I had better in Washington State) & crawfish boil (of course, beers too). This place is pretty laid back, price is right & the food was good. We ordered one of weekly special (which was a deep fried food) but it was really good. I thought the price is right & food had a very nice flavor. If you check out their website, they do have special & some promotion to make your wallet happy. I am a picky eater especially seafood and for me to go back to this place again this Tuesday, you know I enjoyed the last. :)

What We Wanted

By Andrew B |

This sounded like a fun place to have a beer and some good food. We had both. And at a very reasonable price. Not only was the food good but the staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our meal and drinks. When it got too cold for us on the patio, we moved inside and enjoyed watching the game on the TV and talking with the bartenders.

What a surprise!

By Amanda M |

We literally just drove around until we found something that looked interesting. This looks like a hole in the wall from the outside-but it was really very good. We chose to sit on the patio (great choice!), and enjoyed a cocktail while waiting for our Boudain appetizer. It was tasty for Texas boudain-just enough kick if you add a little Tabasco. My friend had the duck gumbo which she said was really good-the reaux was a beautiful color! I had sauted shrimp. A really great "Cajun-inspired" meal in the middle of Austin! The patio atmosphere on a great fall evening made it even better!!

Great place to hang out!

By travelbugstl47 |

Walking on Shoal Creek stopped for lunch, stumbled on the saloon and I’m glad i did. Oysters were surprisingly fresh. Had just a regular burger and fries. Food was good but a bit average. One feature they offered was selecting your meat, beef, turkey or veggie. It was nice they offered the choice!

Crawfish Season!!

By Ciara Wood |

We had a great lunch with our family on a Sunday at the Saloon! Everyone enjoyed the fresh crawfish and I also enjoyed the chicken fried steak. We had fantastic service and the atmosphere is great too! The Brownie Al A Mode was delicious.

The food was A+++++

By Bree G |

We came across this place for our first night in Austin and it was definitely one of the best meals we’ve had in the USA. I had the fried shrimp and really enjoyed the meal! So delicious! My friend had the chicken tenders and it was the most tender chicken we’ve ever had, melts in your mouth. SO GREAT! The place is decked out with Texas stuff which was great for our first night in Austin. The staff were friendly and didn’t rush us out so we could relax after a day of traveling. 10/10 would recommend!!

Nice Saloon

Went here with a group for lunch. Texas saloon with good bar selections and food. Tex-Mex menu. Good service, reasonable prices. Good place to watch sporting events.

Fun, fun, fun!

By wilsona7 |

After 9:30pm in Austin (where the liquor stores close early) we were looking for a place to watch Monday Night Football. Stumbled on Shoal Creek Saloon and fell in love. This is a New Orleans Saints/LSU Tigers/Texas Longhorns bar. While they serve bar food, it was far from typical. The garlic soup is fabulous! The jalapeno poppers were fresh, not the frozen, then deep fried variety found in Ohio. There were fresh oysters on the half shell, lots of different beers (including local microbrews) and attentive wait staff. We had a great time!

What a pleasant surprise

By reitm |

Have lived within blocks of Shoal Creek Saloon for 30 years. Because my husband doesn't think he likes cajun food, we haven't gone to eat there for many many years. Just had a guest from out of town and husband was not going to join us so we tried it. What a great surprise. We shared the pork chops (house specialty) and the garlic Shrimp over rice (also a house specialty). Pork chop was so huge would barely fit on the plate and was delicious. Shrimps were perfectly spiced and cooked and the sauce over them and the rice was just delicious. It will NOT be so long before I go back and now I'm going to tell all my friends to go. By the Way it is also affordable!

Most tasteless food I've had for years

By wndl87 |

I was recommended this place and their crawfish by some Austin experts I met at SXSW. We got there at 19:30, but they were already out of crawfish. We decided to stay and try the other dishes. The food took around 45-60 minutes, with no apologies for the delay from the staff. Me and my partner had gumbos, and I really wished we didn't. They were totally tasteless, like water with brown color, filled with soggy rice and rather bland shrimps. It was so bad that I for the first time ever almost refused to pay for the food. I can't remember the last time I was this disappointed when eating out. I hope the crawfish are good, cause the gumbo soups are not.

Fun Atmosphere

By Amy C-V |

Food was good. Crawfish were just as I hoped they'd be. Shrimp Gumbo was mighty spicy. Son's Shrimp Po Boy was just right. I could tell it was a busy place but we were there in between normal meal times so we were seated quickly and had good service.

Lousiana Cooking

By TC F |

This a bit of New Orleans in Austin. Great cajun crawdads and great drinks. The place in on the river with out door seating available. The atmosphere is very Texas bar, not at all fancy.

Really great food & superb location

By AndrewPlatinum |

Looks a bit of a "beer joint" from the outside, but the rear patio overlooking Shoal Creek is a wonderful cool shady spot. The Cajun style food is excellent - we went for dinner and just had to come back the next day for lunch Relaxed atmosphere with good, friendly service. Highly recommend this place for a meal, or just to have a drink and sit on the patio watching the turtles in the creek

Great

This is an excellent place to eat, don't visit Austin without trying this restaurant. The steaks and catfish was great, the salads crisp and fresh. Grat service too.

Okay Food, Great Service

By Davyea |

In the midst of taking pics to write a poor review, my server noticed and asked the issue. I told her my oysters were burnt so she offered to remake them. I don’t like sending food back but she assured me that they would be more than happy to remake the oysters. She was very attentive and kind. However, I like well seasoned food and this place just didn’t do it for me. I would eat there again if I had to but there are too many other options around town. I actually hate having to give them an average review bc the service was exceptional but...it’s my true opinion.

Local flare

By Chip G |

Shoal creek is authentic Austin. It's a bar that has good food. All New Orleans influenced they have their priorities straight. Freezing cold beer shots at the ready great crawfish in season or shrimp po boy all the time, the right sports on the big screens and of course the best shuffle board table in town. Don't go Shoal creek if you are in a hurry cause its not that kinda place. They know your there and they will serve you exactly what you want but just relax a little. This is Austin.

Great lunch with my family

By Clifton H |

I love this institution , the bar is old and comfortable . The waitstaff was friendly and last time I got a poboy, which was very tasty. Just a fun, relaxed place that Saint's fans gathering and cheer that makes me feel like I'm watching the game at a bar in uptown NOLA.

no gumbo ready, no fried chicken, no alligator, no jambalaya, no crawfish

By futurelawyer2005 |

This place is a ripoff. They don't tell you that their catfish is just nuggets. So $8 for only four nuggets and hushpuppies is a ripoff. I'm Cajun, from the swamped of Jeanerette and I'm used to catfish as long as your lower arm and much cheaper than $2 a piece. They tasted good but were tiny. Their mashed potatoes were country style. Their okra only average. $3 for an Abita root beer was ridiculous. On the whole, being only 5 hours away from NOLA doesn't translate to this place being Cajun at all. Over priced, average food, lack of authentic selection of Cajun food and staff who treat you like they have better things to do. I think they're just preying on people who don't know any better and using the term "Cajun" inaccurately.

LSU / Saints bar!

By BENJAMIN B |

We found this place to watch LSU in the world series. They have our favorite Abita on tap. The service was great and we had a fun time with the other LSU fans.

DO NOT Order Their Curbside Pickup

By Steve C |

Trying to support most of our favorite Austin restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic, the three of us decided to order from Shoal Creek's online Curbside Pickup menu. While we usually enjoy one of their etouffee or gumbo entrees on their creekside deck, two of us decided to try their chicken fried steak platter. But, more about that later. The online ordering process was the smoothest part of the experience. We requested a pick up time about 45 minutes from our ordering time. After receiving order and pick up time confirming emails, I drove to the restaurant, arriving over 15 minutes early. Parking just outside the entrance., I looked for curbside pickup instructions (e.g., a number to text my order number, parking location and vehicle type to, etc.) Unfortunately, there were no special instructions for curbside pickup, as there are with many restaurants and other businesses that we have frequented during the various pandemic rules periods. About ten minutes before my order was supposed to be ready for pickup, I masked up and went inside. My order was sitting on the counter, ready at least ten minutes ahead of time. I was home and unpacking our meals in about 8 minutes. The food was still warm, not piping hot, but acceptable. The first thing we noticed was that there was no cream gravy, as advertised on the menu. CFS without cream gravy is not a complete entree. Secondly, the chicken fried steak was not tenderized enough, it was too thick, and it was overcooked. It was also tough enough to require a steak knife to cut. A well prepared CFS is fork tender. The green beans were cooked to just before al dente, in other words not enough. They also required a serrated knife to cut and were almost inedible because of their toughness. Finally, the mashed potatoes had most of their potato flavor covered up with bacon drippings. All in all, this was a very disappointing dinner and our worst Austin curbside pickup experience, especially since it was really their regular Take Out service, under a different label. If Shoal Creek Saloon is going to make it, they are going to have to improve in all areas of their service and product.

Always good!

By FunTraveler25 |

Whenever the urge for crawfish hits this is the place to go. Not only is the fried crawfish tails a delicious treat but so are the sides including some of the best hush puppies in town. The extended beer selection is always cold and the folks there always are happy to see you. Also if you are a Saints or LSU fan the walls are filled with neat memorabilia. Try the back patio on a nice day or evening for a truly Austin touch.

Cute Little Texas Saloon - Bad Service

By _jenniferguson_ |

I brought my boyfriend here for his first time eating crawfish. We were on our way from North Austin to New Braunfels and after researching, reading reviews and asking friends in the area for the best place in Austin, this is where I decided to go. It was a neat place to take him - the walls are decorated very country and there are photos of John Wayne and other "Texan" stuff on the walls. It definitely had a great atmosphere. My only problem was the service, I am not a hard person to wait on, since I have been in the industry and I am patient. Our server was very nice, also. My problem was that after our meal was dropped off, our server immediately walked away without asking if it looked ok. I like to dip my crawfish in a side of seasoning and there was no butter of seasoning provided. It wasn't until we had eaten about 95% of the 5 lbs that our server checked on us and I was able to order a side of seasoning. My boyfriend, who had never had crawfish before, loved the seasoning. I wish we had it the whole time. Plus, the server charged my card $30 more than my check... but he corrected it and I am not upset. Someone else very well may have been, however. Other than that, good atmosphere, great tasting crawfish and very good boudin with a nice bar selection. I just wish the service would have been better.

Awesome little spot in Austin

By Tyler A |

I've been coming to Shoal Creek Saloon for the past several years and it never disappoints. Great place to sit out back and enjoy the weather while eating some great cajun food. The gumbo and catfish are my go-to's. Plus, the service has always been great and I have never had to wait too long for food.

Yummy!

By Tilly524 |

We stumbled upon this place while moving our daughter to town. On a last minute "where do we eat supper tonight", we quickly decided their crawfish boil was up for a try. This place is a little run down, but to us that just added to the atmosphere. The food was great. Beyond the crawfish, we enjoyed oysters, hush puppies, and calamari. Drinks were good and service was pleasant. We will be back!

Excellent

By 900lauraleem |

Excellent! My husband and I both enjoyed the back porch dinning. It was very cold outside but you wouldn't have known it. I had the catfish and shrimp. My husband had the crawfish. Both were delicious. Will definitely return....

Went for the Crawdaddys

By Robert P |

It was my first visit to Shoal Creek Saloon, I'll probably be back. I went there specifally for the Crawdaddys in season. They were good and very reasonably priced they could have been seasoned more for my liking.

Great, cheap seafood

By Yeoldwriter |

This restaurant, which looks like the porch of a petrol station, has friendly staff, excellent crawfish, a perfect gumbo, a delicious garlic soup and a huge bread pudding.

Ended up here instead of The Diner

By Elizabeth W |

Really good lunch special. Garlicky Shrimp and Grits. Very spicy and delicious. Will bring my husband the next time as I am sure he will like it.

Bad Service

By Miguel L |

They close at 11:00 but at 8:30 they were already out of crawfish. We placed an order for shrimp to help with the cravings. It is almost 10:00 pm and they still have not brought the shrimp out. When I asked the waiter he replied, “well you will get them free” like I am asking or in need of anything “free”. I will not recommend this place at all, horrible customer service and the food isn’t all that great waiter.

Surprisingly bad

By Chris B |

Austin has MANY great restaurants - this is NOT one of them, which surprised me. Our first mistake was going here for dinner on Fat Tuesday. Very overcrowded, and even though we had someone there at 5:30pm trying to make arrangements and get us a table for 7pm, we weren't seated until 7:30pm. I ordered the catfish, shrimp, and oyster basket. The catfish and oysters were made with the same grainy, sandy batter that had too much pepper (and I love black pepper, but that was all you could taste). Over-cooked catfish, and that sandy batter was just awful. The shrimp and hushpuppies were decent. My wife had the shrimp gumbo, and it was ok. I wasn't expecting New Orleans grade Cajun food, but I did expect something better than this. Overrated, overpriced, and not at all enjoyable. My only guess is that its location is what keeps this place open, however, it is right on Shoal Creek, so I imagine the mosquitoes in the summer add to the miserable experience one can have here.

Saint's haven in central Texas

By sandmrhodes |

I have been going to Shoal Creek Saloon for the past 3 years since moving from New Orleans to Austin. The VW Beetle on the roof painted like a Saint's helmet sort of gives the theme away before walking in. The place is a madhouse (in a good way) during the Saint's games. I hear that it is the same for LSU games as well. It is a nice getaway with like minded individuals who love the Saints, win or lose. The food is fairly typical bar food with a nod to south Louisiana. I had a catfish po'boy and the wife had a shrimp po'boy. A little refinement on the "dressed" part would have been nice. Huge slices of onions and tomato. No mayo. But the fish and shrimp were very good and the bread was passable. Crawfish etouffee had a good flavor and consistency. $3.50 Abita Amber on draft during the game. Sadly, they only have pinto beans, no red beans and rice. I guess it is a compromise. I would give them a 3/5 for food and a 5/5 for atmosphere, so I compromised with 4/5.

Really tasty food

By 1938el |

Love the jumbo shrimp and everything else I have ever ordered here. Friendly staff and great value. Highly recommended.

Great Seafood at Great Prices!

By John G |

At first glance, the restaurant looks like any other business in a shopping strip. The large New Orleans Saints helmet on the roof and the Saloon with the Texas Star sign gives the restaurant an air of authenticity. I started with the Boudin Balls as an appetizer, and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. They were filled with flavor and cooked to perfection. Next came the combination seafood platter, and it had catfish, shrimp and crawfish. Everything tasted fantastic including the red beans and homemade coleslaw. The wait staff were very friendly and the environment was very relaxed. Overall, a great experience! I highly recommend this restaurant. If you want great seafood at affordable prices with a guarantee of quality, this place is for you!

Great sports bar and Cajun food

By FoodfanUSA |

Hats off to management as the servers are friendly, well trained, and consistently attentive. Great po boys, especially the roast beef. Always a fun place to catch a game. Many drink specials to enjoy too!

The crawfish saloon

By Ironande |

Very Texan I think, as a European. Great atmosphere, good food - not only the crawfish, and reasonably priced. We went back a lot of times and will for sure visit if we are in Austin.

Delicious Food

By Andrew C |

Everything I've had at Shoal Creek Saloon has been delicious. They really know what they're doing! Not to mention, the smoked porkchop they serve on Tuesday is the best you'll find anywhere.

Great Southern Eats

By Nakstrani |

I had halfa po-boy filled with juicy fried oysters and immediately wished I had ordered a full one. It was so good I could eat it everyday. Team lunch. Parking is a challenge so plan for that. We car pooled and parked on street. Scout parking spots before hand & carry enough quarters for the meter. It also has lunch time buffet that some of my team went for. Their fried cat fish is supposed to be really good too. Go for it!

Surprise, surprise!

By 197pat13 |

From the outside, it looks like a bar where you'd be able to count all the teeth in the joint on one hand! But, the clientele were of all ages and walks of life. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We had great conversations with the people we sat with at the picnic table at the back and it was like Huckleberry Finn watching a young fisherman use all the tricks in his nine year old's bag to catch fish in the stream that the deck overlooks. Sure, we got a couple of mosquito bites, but the food was good and the drinks were tasty.

Mmm fried goodness

By Teast0427 |

I love a Cajun restaurant. I especially love one on the side of the road with a huge back patio next to a creek. This place was fantastic. My husband and I went one Saturday after the Memorial Day flooding of Austin. The place was under water a week before, but this visit it was in perfect shape. You would never know it had been flooded. We sat at the bar because it was just us two. I think you really get to know a place at the bar. You can chat up the bartender and learn a lot. I had the shrimp and oyster basket and the hubs had oysters on the half shell. The food was rocking good! I can't wait to go back!

Super Amazing Service and Food!!!

I love this place!

By Mark and Rita W |

Walk into a small, dark bar type environment but keep on walking to the unmarked back door. Go through that door.. You'll be on a nice, covered patio with views of Shoal Creek. If you sit by the back railing you can watch turtles swimming in the creek. Dinner and a show. What more can you ask? Oh yeah, the food: We've only gone there for lunch, but we've been there at least half a dozen times and have never been disappointed. We go for the fried gulf fare. Oysters and fried catfish. The oysters on the half shell are always fresh and chilled and the sauce has just the right bite. Fried, they are crispy on the outside and creamy and sweet on the inside. You can get these in po boy form, which comes with the usual tomato, lettuce, sauce and pickles on a really good piece of bread, We try to get there whenever we make it to Austin, and will continue to do so. Great food, great view great service and reasonably priced. They have a good selection of beers and their sweet tea is great, too,

We found our home here in Austin Texas at a saints bar! We love that we have a little piece of home in this huge state. Food isn't the best but isn't half bad, a little over priced though.

"Cajun" or not, I know what I like.

By Roy_Hinkley |

We stopped in here on a lark on a balmy Texas day in February. It was the "Po Boy" on the sign that drew our attention. That, and it offered patio seating. We walked into a dark sports bar and asked if patio seating was available (Hey, it's winter). They said yes and showed us to the patio. We sat by the railing and were pleased to see, maybe ten feet away, a small creek with fish and about half a dozen or so turtles frolicking in and around the water. Now, where we come from you're more likely to see a dead body in the river than turtles so that alone was a great start. Oh yeah, the food. We tend to be fairly simple. Good catfish and oysters, both raw and fried will turn us on. They did not disappoint. The half shells were fresh, big, and cold and were perfectly accompanied by a sweet red sauce and some grated horseradish on the side. You could make it as hot as you wished. As for the fried stuff, wifey got a combo platter with catfish, shrimp and oysters. And, a few hush puppies on the side. Being concerned for her safety, It was my duty to sample a bit of each to make sure it was up to snuff. It was. Everything was fresh, perfectly done and served in an attractive manner. The hush puppies had a bit of a zing to them which I found refreshing. My oyster Po Boy had the same excellent fried oysters with lettuce, a good sixed slice of fresh, red tomato, raw onions and a few pickles, all served on a fresh, fairly soft roll. with a side of tarter sauce. Generally, I prefer a roll with a crunchy crust but this served to hold everything together. With a glass of Shined Bock (on draft), it was just about a perfect lunch on a perfect day. I nursed my beer so as to enjoy the show put on outside by the fish and turtles before we left. They never rushed us and the wait staff was very efficient and friendly.. We'll definitely be back..

Great patio, great lunch spot

By ReikiForAllBeings |

We just happened upon this restaurant, and what a lucky happenstance! We chose to sit outside on the patio, overlooking Shoal Creek. There are some big turtles in that creek! We ordered the Large Muffuletta with house-made chips to split. The kitchen graciously served it in two separate baskets with an entire order of chips in each basket. I'm not sure which was better, the chips or the sandwich! The chips were really crispy and nicely salted. (Yes, they were high fat, but that's probably why they were SO delicious!) We were surprised that the muffuletta was served hot, as all the other muffuletta we've eaten were cold sandwiches. Regardless, it was very tasty and very large. Even splitting the large, neither of us could finish our half sandwiches or all the chips. We brought the chips home. They reheated wonderfully in the air fryer. So happy we happened upon this restaurant!!

Pretty good New Orleans in Austin.

Pretty good when we have a craving for home. Boudin was good. Roast Beef poboy was good but not a New Orleans poboy. Wasn't the right bread and it was toasted. However it was good.

Just great

I regret not coming to Shoal Creek for the first time until recently. I grew up in Austin and just never got around to coming here. I've driven by many times and seen the "Duck Gumbo" sign and vowed to stop someday. Well, the duck gumbo is great. The shrimp cocktail is simple but delicious with a tangy horseradishy cocktail sauce. The beer and wine is reasonably priced, the servers are friendly, and the view of the creek with its resident turtles, fish, and birds is relaxing.

Gotta get the gumbo!

One of my favorite spots for gumbo and a po-boy! Although the interior could use a good power washing. I wouldn't use the 3 second rule here. But the food is good and a patio on the back.

Crawfish Etoufee

By Michael T |

Crawfish Etoufee was good and full of flavor. The green beans were excellent. Great service, nice atmosphere, overall a great experience.

Affordable Seafood, No More, No Less

Felt like a bit of New Orleans inside Austin, TX. It was cool for lunch, nothing over the top. The crawfish had a little kick in the spice which I like. It is a busy place, so have your order ready to go, and be patient and have a drink because the crawfish takes some a bit of time to come. Good: -Chicken Fried Steak -Half Catfish Poboy -Combo Gumbo Bowl (mix of the cajun & shrimp gumbo orders) -Order of Crawfish (I think half a pound) -Side of corn on the cob -Beautiful creek in the rear to look at -Several TVs in the rear seating area of the restaurant Bad: -Very busy place, prepare for potential 30 minute waits (around 1-3pm)

Don't know how we missed it our first time in Austin

By DebPhil1 |

We stopped in between our shopping at Tomlinson's Pet Store & Waterloo Records. Excellent catfish & gumbo. Just as good as we've had in New Orleans & the beer was COLD like we like it! Staff was very personable & accommodating with the games/sports on the many TV screens. We will definitely visit them again we go back to Austin.

Don't be put off by the exterior. The food is great, as is the patio on Shoal Creek.

This place has been around for a while. Why else would the neon sign advertise "color t.v."? But the food was very good, the service was fast and friendly, and the view of Shoal Creek was great from the patio out back. There are several t.v.s, so you could call it a sports bar. It has a lot of different beers, so you could call it a bar. But the food is a real attraction. My husband and I split a Shrimp Po' Boy that was, unlike Subway advertises, a foot long (12"). The fried shrimp were as big as a silver dollar, coated in a crispy batter, and fried to perfection. We also got Fried Okra for our side. There was about 1 1/2 cups of perfectly fried okra. You can tell the fry cook knows how hot to have the oil for frying, as neither dish was greasy. My husband had a "Firemen Four" lager beer on draft that was not bitter and had a smooth finish. There is limited parking in front, but a fair sized (for Austin) parking lot on the south side of the building. Check them out if you are driving by or even if you aren't The food is worth the trip.

I love this (sports) bar!

Great place to watch a football game on Saturdays. Food is very good. Service even better. Try any of the Po Boys, the Boudin, and the shun chicken wings.

Its a good place to eat

By mimiMexico_df |

Went there cause I've seen it ages ago, and hadn't the time to come here at lunch time. But not this time. What I liked the most is that as soon as you go in, you do not feel as if you're entering a chain restaurant. Thank god for that. Kind of tired of the same type of restaurant with flavourless food. I really enjoyed the ambience... Very old loussiana type. The service could not be better. Helpfull, enjoying what they do, and my food was served very fast. The food was good. Was it optimal? Not really, but sure it was tasty. Which is a bless in a city of burgers and BBQs... Will I return? For sure...

Go HERE!!

This is a must for most of our Austin trips. I've been going here for 15 years and I love it every single time. Great place to sit outside and watch a game and drink beer, and then when you get hungry every single thing on their menu is top notch. The classic cajun cuisine they offer is hands down the best in Austin, but the daily specials are also fun to look forward to as well. Also, if you're feeling under the weather this place offers the most medicinal bowl of food I've ever eaten at restaurants: Garlic Soup. You've never had anything like it, and it will change your life. You're welcome :-)

Just greasy bar food

I liked to go here back when they had live music. Nothing on their menu ever really appealed to me -- just greasy stuff.

Good food, nice atmosphere, friendly staff

Shoal Creek Saloon is my "go to" place. The Louisiana-inspired menu is unique, plus they frequently have specials to liven things up: Cochon du Lait around Mardi Gras time, steamed crawfish in the Spring. There's a selection of healthy choices, too. You can eat inside for cozy camraderie or on the back deck, which faces the creek and a park. All of the staff serves all of the tables, so there's never a delay while you search for "your" waiter. Just flag anybody down, they're happy to help.

Nice Taste of Louisiana in Austin

We entered when it opened at 11:00 to watch LSU hoops and you could hear a pin drop. By the time we left, it was packed and you couldn't hear the TVs. Fun place to watch LSU sports. 13" oyster poboy was great and about $5 cheaper than Baton Rouge or Nola! Great selection of beer and many there were tearing into boiled crawfish. Service was good - thanks Emma!

Good Place to Watch a Game

We caught the LSU-Ole Miss game at Shoal Creek. The service was great. It's hard to comment on the food since we ate elsewhere; the desert we ordered was delicious and reasonably priced.

Rustic dining/Good food

By Carol A |

The Shoal Creek Saloon has been a fixture in Austin for a long time. Familiar to college students, families and professionals alike this place has something to satisfy every appetite. The patio overlooks Shoal Creek and the park. Overhead screens afford a good view of sports events. There is an ample supply of beer from the outside bar. There is a full bar inside. The main offering is cajun and seafood. Specials during the week include pork chops, chicken fried steaks and catfish. The gumbo is exquisite. Good for hearty appetites!

Always on our list

We always go to the Shoal Creek Saloon when we are in Austin. We especially like going on Thursday nights for their steak special. I do miss the live music they used to have but the only negative is the lack of parking space so get there early!

Great gumbo and tuna but way old and moldy lettuce

By Gloria L |

The gumbo was delicious. The French bread was soft, not crisp. The tuna looked great but the salad was very old. I asked for another salad and got more old and moldy salad. The location is great.

Cajun food - tasty, but a bit overpriced for what you get.

We were regular patrons here for 15 years every Sunday to watch New Orleans Saints football games. "Regulars," as they say. Over the years, the prices inched up to the point we could no longer justify spending over 3 hours there every Sunday. The food's "good" but not excellent, and the service is good as long as the place isn't crowded.

Last I checked there was a saints helmet on the bar, not soccer cleats

By Jonathan B |

This is a saints bar. This means that they should be playing the saints game on the tvs on a Sunday, not soccer. Came here to watch the saints/philly game and ended up having to wait for them to change the soccer game which was being watched by legit 2 people, while the other 30 people outside had to suffer through it bc the genius manager didn’t want to change it. Missed almost the entire 1st quarter. Get it together. This was stupid and multiple people left bc of it. Do better like wtf

Scant Oysters

By smile4you |

I have been going here for dinner and lunch for years. The quality is suffering. Not only are the prices increasing $19.99 for a dozen of gulf oysters, but they were so tiny. Compared to Quality Seafood they size and price are lacking the quality of Quality....The service was still amazing, but if you are over charging and delivering scant goods, you might as well go for Quality. Smile

Great local spot

By Alex M |

Love the oysters and beer. The patio is nice bc it backs up to a little creek. Lots of different folks frequent this spot.

enjoyed our meal.

By gambler2016 |

Ate the crawfish here. They were good-size and seasoned well. Service was good. There was additional parking across the street and down a couple blocks. Would go here again.

Tiny gulf oysters

By smile4you |

This place used to be awesome. We went last night and got the smallest oysters ever. I don't know what is going on, perhaps a financial crisis?

Get the Burger!

By Helen V |

The Saloon has many great dishes, including all you can eat fried catfish on Fridays. However, my favorite is their hamburger. The burger pattie is good, not unlike many others, but what makes their burger great is the bun. Yes, I said the bun. I'm not sure where they get them, but their soft and quite flavorful. Also, if you're a sports fan, they have a multitude of TVs - even small ones at each table!
