The food was hot and hits the spot. So many to choose from. The menu covers most of popular Indonesian dishes from different areas. Also attached to it is a grocery store. they carry most things Indonesian eats. It's so worth going there. The portion is pretty large, I ate my take-out 2x. The people running it are nice. Would come back.

I do not know what secret ingredients this restaurant uses but every dish was competing with each other. We had a party of 6 so everything we ordered we ate family style. The roti with yummier than usual sauce, chicken satay, the best fried wonton ever, Gadu Gadu, and kroket with dipping sauce was a meal alone. We had fried talapia that was simply mouth watering good. Also had a beef dish (not a curry dish) that was soooo flavorful and tender, the meat melted in your mouth. The fried chicken with a sweet but spicy sauce was the bomb - I wanted to put my rice in the platter to scoop up the sauce. We had noodles that was one of the best noodle dishes - nothing fancy just very very tasty. The oxtail stew was OMG delicious. Don't let the fact the cafe is next door to an Indonesian grocery store turn you away - the food was the bomb.com and we will be visiting the next time we go to LA.

This is a place that Indonesian will go if they missed thrift various of food back in their home country. I was there last night and we ordered Nasir Kuningan, Nasir Uduk, Kwetiau Goreng, Nai Mantap, Batagor and various of Drinks. We found the food was average if not terrible, only my wife likes her Nasir Mantap. I definitely will not go back to this restaurant, sorry they were nothing like home food.

The chendol drink was labeled to die for but it was too watery and not enough of ingredients in the drink. Not worth the price! We ordered the satay, gado gado, nasi gorneng and Kwai tway. It took a long time for them to serve the food. The food was just mediocre. Definitely not the best or worth the hype. This place is also noisy.

AMBIANCE: 4/5. Cute! Not as ghetto as I'd expect from a restaurant connected to a market. Minimalist but clean. Cool textured ocean-wave-like panel on the wall. SERVICE: 3.5/5. Fine, nothing to write home about. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow. Friendly enough for a cheap restaurant. VARIETY: 4.5/5 Lots of stuff to try! Soups, salads, banana leaf wraps, noodle dishes, fried rice, lots of veggie options... I'm so sad that I didn't have enough tummy space to try more. FLAVOR: 4.5/5. --YUM. I had the Nasi Mantep and really enjoyed the flavor of the curry - bright, hearty, complex, with just the right amount of spice for me. I am a terrible Thai person who can't take super spicy food ::shameful pout:: so it was great to have a dish with a little kick that didn't force my nose to run. I particularly liked the collard greens in there - tender and tasty with the curry. Didn't like the dried beef as much; flavor was fine but too tough for me. --The Roti Paratha was truly fantastic - the roti was light and fresh with the right amount of doughiness, and the curry dip was divine! This was mind-blowing to me because we Thais eat roti as a dessert with condensed milk. Kind of expensive for what it was. --Nasi Padang is probably my favorite of the traditional rice dishes, as the egg curry is flavorful and nicely offset by the spicy green relish. --Lastly, the Nasi Goreng (fried rice) was delicious as well. A nicely seasoned fried rice with tasty bits of meat - the chicken, beef, and corned beef hash are all excellent. Would love this again when I'm having a fried rice craving. It does taste slightly different from Thai or Chinese fried rice so I'd definitely recommend checking this out.

If you're not sure if you like Indonesian cuisine, you will after trying Simpang. I simply love their food, their service and their prices. Order anything wrapped in banana leaves and you'll walk away a happy person. I can't have a meal without ordering the roti. To die for! The place is low-key, very "Cheers" neighborhoody friendly. I want to yell "Norm" every time the door opens. If you're just in for a small bite, you can't go wrong with a bahn mi washed down with a Vietnamese coffee or Thai tea at the Local Shop which is found under the same roof as Simpang's Market and Restaurant. Yes, I do live in the neighborhood, but to be perfectly blunt, there are other eateries nearby that I simply would not venture into. Or have and have lived to regret it.

The taste beats the original one in Indonesia! So you don't have to fly far away to Indonesia to try the tasty one ;) my favorite's nasi campur and martabak. he owner's Indonesian but they speak English very fluent. and there's asian supermarket beside the restaurant, check out for some stuffs originally imported from Indonesia, Korea, etc.

If you are in LA and you are craving for Indonesian food, you can find Simpang Asia is serving a delicious Indonesian cuisine. We have tried the famous Nasi Padang, Nasi Goreng Babat, Bihun Goreng, pempek. We also have Martabak telor as appetiser. We really enjoy the food, the service is fast and the food come out very quick and very tasty. We recommend it. Please note: the menu in this trip advisor website link to Simpang Asia is really old, the pricing is not up to date as of 14 Feb 2020

my husband and i have been to this place many many times and we never got tired of it. we have tried many kinds of their dishes. they are all delicious. the staff are very friendly. they have a little cafe and small grocery store where we usually visited after our meal. anyone would like to taste the original Indonesian food should visit Simpang Asia.

Tips: try the banana leaf wrapped dishes for a bit of authenticity and a different way of having your food served; next door is a cafe where you can grab a quick bite and a small grocery store. I love LA for its variety of food from all kinds of ethnicities and this place is one of the examples. I'm no Indonesian but I've had my share of Indonesian food including the local food in Bali. The food here is pretty authentic and reasonably priced. I love the rice wrapped in banana leaf (there are about three or four different varieties on the menu so check to see the combo - for example, some have a bit of vegetables, a chunk of beef, a fried chicken, a boiled egg, anchovies, and not one of my favorites - I think either chicken liver or kidney, etc). I also really like the grilled fish in brown sauce. One way they can improve it is to offer it with a side of rice. I usually have to order the rice separately. I find the fried rice and fried noodles to be a bit on the plain side so I usually skip it. They also offer a variety of snacks and desserts in a small glass case by the cashier. The decor is cafe light in contemporary tables/chairs. The place is roomy enough to host a few 12 people sized parties. There is some outdoor seating. Parking is available but can be tight during busy hours such as lunch or dinner. I've been here a few times for dining in and take out. A great little place.

I have been here a few times and pretty much tried everything. I have to say it's pretty good. It compromises a bit on the spiciness (chili hot) of the dish, but that's what make it enjoyable for most Americans. All my American friends like the food.

This place is great! There aren't many Indonesian restaurants in LA, but this one reminds me of real Indonesian food (plus it is a LOT cleaner). You can even get durian or chocolate/avocado smoothies. True to Indonesian meals, they have the combos - rice in the middle and perhaps five dishes around the rice. I love the beef randang and the jakfruit entrees. If you want some fun, one of the combinations comes wrapped in a banana leaf. It has no palate, you simply unroll the leaf on the table and the dinner is inside. Service is great. I have been greeted at the door as an old friend, even on my first visit. There is a connecting market next door that has exotic items. I have enjoyed being able to find Keecap Manis (sweet soy), black rice, and palm sugar. Finally, the prices are really low.

Everytime I'm in LA, I have to stop by this place. Good food, friendly service and met the needs to my Indonesian food cravings. The decor is simple, yet they carry so many types of Indonesian food. Their fried oxtail soup is to die for, its probably one of their specialty since there were times when they ran out of it. They have a cafe/grocery attached to the restaurant. The grocery store carry most things Indonesian people missed about their country's snacks and ingredients that they imported from Indo. I simply love this place.

I am so excited seeing the various menus! It was hard to find true similar taste of Indonesian cuisine in several places. If you're missing home or probably just want to try something new but good, you have come to the right place!

I recently got back from Bali and was craving Indonesian food so I decided to check out this joint. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Nasi Bungkus was off the charts good. It is really nice knowing that after a 10 day vacation eating Indonesian food every day, you can come home and get food this authentic!

Casual Indonesian spot that offers takeout and dine-in. Reservations are accepted online or you can join the Yelp waitlist when you arrive. Our party of two waited for about 15 minutes on a weeknight around 7pm. There is a small parking lot but you may be better off with street parking. Credit cards accepted. It is good for big groups. We ordered the roti paratha which came with a creamy curry sauce on the side to dip. The roti was hot and flaky - a great starter. We split a combination meal that included noodles, chicken sate, egg, and rice - it was on the smaller side but still good for us two. My favorite part of the dish were the noodles - I think ordering dishes a la carte is the better move.

I used to live in Indonesia and had really enjoyed the food, so I got all excited when I found this place. The food was really good and authentic, except for the laksa or soto ayam. My daughter thought mine was better (this doesn't usually happen). The price was pretty reasonable also. The people were very nice except for this one lady. I didn't realize that they didn't have my mango juice until I was back in the hotel. When I called, the guy was very apologetic and told me that he would make a note and I could come any time to get my drink. The next day, as we had to leave Los Angeles, and the restaurant is at the opposite way, I called and asked if I could just have a refund on the drink. The lady insisted that unless I showed her my receipt, she would not give me credit. I tried to tell her that there should be a note that explained what happened, but obviously I was naive.

What I like about this place is that it’s Halal (a relative rarity in such a big place like LA Westside) as well as serving the type of food I like (Far East, spice). I went on two occasions - once after Friday prayers and once after a haircut next door. I have tried the turmeric lemon chicken soup with rice, and then the Gado Gado. Both could have done with a bit more spice - especially the Gado Gado - but really, I can’t complain because this is the type of food I like and it’s accessible. The iced coffee (sweet, with cream) is delicious also.

Really like this place and the neighborhood setting it resides in. Food is well made and very tasty. You can tell they put some care into their work. I had the rendeng which was very good.

We have visited this restaurant many times during the years and will continue to do so. The food tastes as Indonesian and is simple and good. We like it. The ambiance is simple but not at all bad and you get a very good meal for a reasonable cost. They also have a small well equipt supermarket next door and all the staff is friendly. It reminds me of Djarkarta and Surubaja. Try it out.

Their food is surprisingly good and taste like original indonesian food. Tried various dishes and all are delicious. Prices are very reasonable for us standard. Must try if you like Indonesian Food.

I always eat here when I am in town. This whole in the wall restaurant is clean always crowded and absolutely has yummy food. You had better wear loose clothes when you dine there because you won't be able to stop eating. Plus the music is old school R&B....so if you are a fan of this music you may not want to leave. There were four of us for dinner and we ordered all the following food and our bill was less than $60: roti paratha with a yummy curry sauce; kroket potato ball with peanut sauce; Gado gado (a warm salad with peanut sauce that is out of this world); Lemper (sticky rice with chicken); Mir trek tek (stir fried noodles); rengdan (slow cooked beef curry); a special of the day chicken dish; and rice. I wish I could give them more stars because they NEVER disappoint.

Nice treat to get to catch a quick lunch with friends. Solid Indonesian noodle and rice dishes. The place is shared with a grocery and the atmosphere isn't great, but it's clean, food is tasty and presentation is great.

I don't get to eat Indonesian food in San Diego, so whenever we are in LA we stop at Simpang Asia. The beef rendang is DELICIOUS!!! But everything I have ordered here is good. If you order one of the Nasi dishes, you can try several different items. Service is not the fastest, but comes with a smile so works for me. There is a great little store next door as well.

My wife and I had a hankering for something new so we tried Simpang Asia which is somewhat nearby our house. The menu was extensive and the food we ordered (four dishes) was tasty and, I presume, authentic. Serving portions were ample and we took leftover home for a later meal. Service was quick and efficient. I think it's walk in traffic only. No reservations. Decor was non-descript. Sort of what you'd expect in a small strip mall. We went on a Sunday and there's a farmers market that blocks entrance to the strip mall parking. We had to park on the street and walked two blocks. It was an enjoyable experience and we'll be back.

We have been here so many times and we always give a very good review. We got the food and ate at home this time. The food was packed in nice plastic containers and heated well in the microwave.

My boyfriend loves this spot for the cool vibes and reasonably priced, tasty food. Stopped by here for dinner on a Tuesday night and we were able to get seated immediately. Indoor and outdoor dining available. They do have a yelp waitlist. There’s a small parking lot in front. Credit cards are accepted. Definitely get the roti with curry sauce for the starter - it’s delicious. I got the Mie Ayam while my boyfriend got the Mie Tek Tek - if you’re unsure of what to get, the Mie Tek Tek is a great choice.

This is one of my wife's favorite places to eat. Whenever we are in West Los Angeles, she is always willing to eat here. They have the items on their menu labeled as which are vegan, vegetarian or gluten free. The prices are extremely fair. The food is very flavorful and creative. I haven't had a bad thing here. The only downsides are that it can be rather noisy and the service isn't the greatest. All said and done, if I lived closer to Simpang Asia, I probably would eat there at least once a week.

The food at this restaurant is delicious. We always order Roti Paratha, Mie Tek Tek, Char Kway Teow. The food as BD service is great.

We absolutely love Simpang and it has become our fav Indonesian restaurant. The roti paratha is sinful. The vegetarian rames is my absolute favourite! The service is prompt and servers are pleasant. The place is usually packed so be prepared to wait for a bit.

My daughter was searching for a new restaurant while we were in LA and she picked this one. It turned out to be a great choice the impressed them with their first tasted of Indonesian food. It was a busy evening but we found luckily parking in the small lot. It was a little challenged since some of the spots were taken up by outdoor seating. Inside the restaurant was full and very lively. Decor was clean and modern. The menu showcased a lot of familiar dishes that I had during my travels to Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia along with newer offerings. We had the following which were mostly thumbs up from the family: Calamari - not typical Indonesian but it was light and crunchy Char Kway Teow - Flat rice noodles with bean sprouts and shrimp. It had a smoky flavor and was very good. Nasi Goreng - simple fried rice dish with chicken and shrimp crackers. It was very tasty in all its simplicity. The Jagger version will be much spicier. Tofu curry - came in a very thick curry with potatoes and carrots thrown on top. It was a bit too thick for us but the curry was sweet. Dish was a little messy when delivered to our table like they were a bit rushed. Garlic noodles - a little like spaghetti pasta in a little too subtle garlic sauce. Roti prata - was nice and light with an excellent dipping curry sauce that even had a small piece of chicken in it. Overall service was pretty good and now that one opened closer to my daughter’s university we will be visiting more often on our trips. We

I have visited this restaurant twice in 30 days. I returned because the first experience was very pleasant and the chicken dish was exotic and delicious. On the second visit I had the traditional nasi goreng and selected the special with an egg on top. Very tasty. I will return again soon.

First time here so there is a learning curve. My wife and I ordered a wonderful appetiser of chicken and coconut wrapped in rice, the Gabo salad which swam in peanut dressing mostly dressing not enough salad, a rice and chicken dish wrapped in a leaf (again drowning in sauce) and a fried rice dish which was lacking in flavour. In short, I think this is a place you need a little experience with to find what dishes work and which ones do not. I did notice leftovers on other tables which remained there instead of being taken home in a doggy bag. We left stuff on the table as well because we didn't want any leftovers. Will give it one more visit to see if we can find a combination of items we like.

The cafe is small, good for take-out. The market has what I need to make yummy indonesian dishes.

Simpang Asia is one of those Indonesian restaurants that I discovered three years ago while I was in the area running an errand. They had traditional Indonesian dishes. I enjoyed it but I never had a need to return to the area until now. My parents came to visit and they wanted something different. Being Indonesian and remembering this place, I took them there. They are very picky when it comes to Indonesian food, so I was glad that they enjoyed it. Next time they visit, this will be one of the places we will go to again.

There were 12 of us. I ordered at the cashier since I had to leave early. Others waited 1/2 hr for their food. I had the special Meatball noodles & shaved ice dessert. Food was good. There's valet parking.

They serve authentic Indonesia food here. Variety Asian foods selection from the menu. Worth to make a trip down if you miss Asian foods. Must try their signature meal “Nasi Bungkus”

I had a wonderful experience at this place. I ordered the Mie Tek Tek with chicken and lite heat, and it was bursting with flavor. The service was impressively quick and friendly, and the staff was attentive, consistently checking if everything was to our liking and offering extra plates for sharing. I'm already looking forward to returning and exploring their other enticing dishes on the menu.

nice little place, very noisy, staff were friendly, service pretty good for how busy they were. We tried an array of dishes of which the nasi bungkus was the best. The mantap Pandang was disappointing due to lack of Sumatran heat, tasted like ayam opor, sweet not spicy. In fact, most dishes tried tended to the sweet side as with central Javanese or Betawi influence. Will be back to try the oxtail soup and soto ayam and probably an increase in a star.

Wonderful restaurant with some delightful food. Right around the corner from where I was staying. Ate there twice. Mai Tek Tek, a great noodle dish, then some Krokets and a sort of fish cake. Indonesian food rocks.

We have traveled to Indonesia and Malaysia many times and were delighted to find that this place had many dishes that we have enjoyed during our travels. We also found the service good and the prices reasonable. We will be back.

This was probably the best restaurant we visited during a week-long stay in SoCal. The food is very good and is a great option for those seeking halal. We ordered chicken satay and what was like a traditional sampler platter with different spicy sauces. There are a lot of appealing choices on the menu.

Years later, we're back, on the hunt for good roti. How did we not come back here sooner? Parking is still challenging, but there was good turn over at lunch on a Saturday. There is inside and outside dining with servers who are good. The roti with curry dipping sauce? Incredibly light, flaky, delicious. We had a second order! Also tried the salmon in curry that came with rice and garlic green beans. Tried Mie Tek Tek, a stir-fried noodle dish that was a winner. Gotta put this place on our regular rotation of favorites.

I'm not a fan of Indonesian Cuisine but this place is in my rotation once a month. All the co-workers and friends that I bring here love it. They even have Avocado Smoothies and a grocery store. Parking will be painful. You need to arrive before 1145 for Lunch if you want a good spot or come after 1245 otherwise you may have to wait a few minutes. There are 12 spots in the parking lot. It is also on a busy corner so don't miss your turn. Enjoy! They have a lot of carryout business. There is only one bathroom needs some cleaning. If you think you need to use the restroom go early.

Kind of like this place which serve pretty close authentic Indonesia cuisine at very affordable price. Beside it has an asia market place directly next door inter-connected which sells a good variety of asian food stuffs. Ordered many of their dishes and mostly are decently tasty good. It goes well together with their colorful crackers and chilli too. Amust to try their chendol *yummylious

After our flight across the country we came here for Juice Durian and the next day came for more Durian Juice, Nasi Kuning, and siomay. The food and drink is just like being in Indonesia. Whenever we are in town we stop in.

The food is good, portions are small; the first Indonesian restaurant I have been to where they don't split the coconut after drinking so you can enjoy the delicious young coconut meat, when asked they had an excuse. They stand by to try and pressure you into tipping. The service can be better, had to ask for plates, napkins, clean the table. I been to Bali, so they don't compare well.

The food is greasy and heavy, even if you get something simple like chicken. My husband is a big eater, but after we had lunch there, he was not hungry till a day after. It was very greasy and didn't have a good taste. Don't want to go back. :(

Finally went here with some friends after hearing about it for a while. Went on a Saturday night and it was fairly packed but didn’t have to wait too long for a table. They have gluten-free as well as vegetarian and vegan menus and for GF, it was a good amount of choices. I had some soup, coconut chicken rice balls, and stir fry noodles. They are not joking about heat so if you are sensitive to spicy food, go no heat at all! Service was good. I don’t think they serve alcohol (or at least I wasn’t interested in drinking so I didn’t look) and was too stuffed for dessert. The dining area is nice but it is a somewhat small place. I will definitely be back, either for dine in or take away.

As we just moved to LA from Singapore, we were missing the common Indonesian/Malaysian local food, so we decided to give this place a try. It was fully packed when we went but the service was fast and friendly. I tried the season special shrimp sambal and it was excellent! Im a really picky eater and it is hard to please me food-wise but Simpang Asia definitely won my vote of approval and I will be going for a revisit soon

Wow! Flavors party 🎉 explosion 💥! We had nasi goreng with chicken 🐔 topped with fried egg 🍳. Of course laksa and finish of with rice pancake with Nutella- did somebody say party in your mouth 👄! Food outstanding, staff nice, decor simple clean.

Simply excellent Indonesian dishes, wide variety to choose from, fast and friendly service. No frills, nothing exotic, perfect lunch spot, affordable prices too.

good indonesian food ;)

I totally forgot about Simpang since my Singaporean friend went back home. I sorely missed her guidance in ordering. I had to order takeout and the only thing I ordered was the bandeg presto with a side of Jasmine rice. In the past we ordered this but I think it was wrapped in a banana leaf and more spices. This version was okay but I need to go back with a group to try more items. I did cruise the grocery store next door and bought Dutch hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) for my Dutch friend and pohon cabe (chili sauce). BTW, it took me awhile to find the café - kinda confusing around the National/Motor area.

We went there for dinner and had a traditional Indonesian meal. Good value for money and nice staff. Note that the portions are huge!

Went here yesterday with the wife for dessert on the way home from a short road trip. Normally, we eat lunch or dinner, but this time only dessert. The food is very flavorful and reasonably priced. If you are the least bit adventurous this is the place for you. I tell my wife that it is a good thing that it isn't around the corner from my house or I would be eating there at least once a week!

I tried almost everything in the menu. They're all pretty good, reasonable price and most important thing is friendly service. Fried fish, grilled chicken, nasi bungkus, nasi campur, beef rendang yummmmm... PS: there's a grocery store next to it with many kind of Indonesian snacks.

I can't get enough of this place, and eat here every time I'm in town. Its inexpensive dining, and delicious. The roti paratha is absolutely delicious, and a surprise for me, it typically wouldn't be the first dish I would go for. The Festive Rice Nasi Kuning is one of my favorites because you get a little of everything (traditional indonesian!).

I had been to Simpang Asia once before but back then, more than half of the space was a grocery store and a small portion was a restaurant. I don't recall what I ate, but I was not very well versed in southeast Asian cuisine at the time. Now that we have traveled to various parts of Asia, our palates have been sufficiently educated to appreciate the variety of food that Simpang Asia had to offer. Full disclaimer: we did not realize how large the portions were so we took all the entrees home after eating a few bites. For starters, we ordered the roti paratha. There were four servings of a delicious, crispy, flaky wrapped bread roll which came with a savory chicken curry dipping sauce. We also ordered the lemper which were sticky coconut rice rolls wrapped around tender juicy shreds of chicken. The soto ayam arrived next which was a chicken turmeric soup with noodles, soft boiled eggs, cabbage and bean sprouts. The broth had a a bit of an oily layer on the surface indicating that it had been cooking with the various ingredients for a long period of time. Next was the seafood laksa soup which was a curry broth with noodles, shrimp, squid, fish cake, boiled egg and bean sprouts. It had a creaminess to it with a bit of heat, tempered by a hint of lemon. We followed that with the nasi goreng with salted fish. The rice dish was exquisite as teeny bits of the fish were interspersed throughout and the fried egg on top helped subdue the intense flavor. We also ordered a savory chicken skewer with the dish. Next on the list was the nasi mantep, a combination platter of chicken curry, egg curry, beef chili, kale curry and green chili relish. The chicken was incredibly tender, almost falling off the bone. Last to arrive was one of their seasonal specials, the ayam goreng kremes, an Indonesian fried chicken with rice, vegetables, tofu and tempeh. Simpang Asia's version was surprisingly light and not laden in oil. I was quite pleased at how each dish was executed and the service was exemplary. As the evening went on, the restaurant continued to fill up with predominantly Asian customers which was a true sign of an Asian restaurant's legitimacy. We thoroughly enjoyed our feast from the "southeast" and have every intention of sampling more of Simpang Asia's other offerings.

Came here recently for a birthday dinner. The food is so good. Our favorite is the Roti Paratha with Curry Sauce. We had a coupon, so we ordered extra dishes for leftovers. All were delicious: Salmon in a mild curry sauce over sautéed kale, vegetable Nasi Goreng, Bihun Goreng, Sizzling Greens and we shared an Es Cendol to drink. Although we ordered medium spice, there was no spice, which was the only complaint, but all dishes were good, if a bit bland. The greens are the best. Service was polite and efficient. It is good to get there early if you want to get a parking space, although there is valet parking late.

I came here and had the Nasi Rames, it came with curry chicken, tempe, rendang and some sauteed green beans. It was about $9, and I couldn't finish the whole thing. It is pretty good for the value because everything else in LA is very expensive. As far as authenticity, it is 3 our of 5. My husband is ordered Nasi padang, and it was not at all tasting like authentic Padang flavor but they give it their best and presentation was good. The waitstaff are friendly and I would return when I am in town.
Malay food
Small simple restaurant with great Malay and Asian food. Excellent fluffy roti paratha. Iced cendol, Malay ice coffee. Good value friendly staff. Valet parking right in front.
