New York Honkey-Tonk

By sharkbitestudio |

Dirty, peanut shell ridden floor, great Americana music, and a shrine to Willy Nelson, what more could you want? The Coffee Drink is amazing and can only be found there and at Skinny Dennis' sister locations (also worth checking out). There is always live music with very talented acts (not hard to find talent in Brooklyn), or a jukebox with classics only. The only reason not to go here is if you don't like dive bars.

Who is Skinny Dennis, you ask?

By vagabondginger |

Skinny Dennis was a country musician in LA and he was 6'11" and weighed just 135 lbs. Yeah - really skinny! Anyway he died on stage playing the bass in 1975 at the age of 28. So this honky-tonk bar is named for him. I just couldn't pass up a dive bar like this so I wandered in for their noon-7pm happy hour for a beer. It was really quiet in the middle of the day but the decor was every bit of dive bar. I'm sure with live music at night it becomes a totally different place. I took my beer outside to sit at the picnic table with my friend who got used to me dragging her around to these kind of places just because I had to check them out. In hindsight I wished I would have tried the frozen coffee though. But for me, probably not someplace I would come back to. Just interesting because I had read the history beforehand.

Unpretentious Fun

We were told about this place at another Brooklyn bar when I asked about live music, we wandered over at 4 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon and were greeted by some great country music and an array of drinks that were great value. Unpretentious, fun, and everything you want a basic bar with music to be. The other patrons were very down-to-earth too. Even the wine comes in cans!! (stick to the beer)

Good fun

Went on a Sunday night and got to see live music, there's no cover charge so that's always a bonus. Unfortunately happy hour wasn't on but beers weren't too bad at $6, we didn't try the iced coffee but wish had done as didn't read about it until afterwards. Bar was full but good atmosphere and pretty funky. Toilets covered in graffiti but that's part of what made it quirky!

Excellent vibe- such a great find!

We stumbled upon Skinny Dennis on a day trip to Brooklyn - such an awesome find- great atmosphere, awesome music, fab beer, perfect!

Best Honky Tonk in the area!

By Leah U |

Visited Skinny Dennis for the first time a few weeks ago and had a blast! I felt like I was transported to an authentic Texas Honky Tonk bar. They offer an extensive specialty drink menu ( their coffee drink is off the charts)and also serve classic favorites like Lonestar beer and Brooklyn lager. The bartenders were awesome, the crowd was fun with lots of people dancing and packed! We were there on a night when an awesome band was playing, who sang and played ORIGINAL music!! I believe they were called Moot Davis and hope to see them play there again soon. A great night full of fun and great music! Can't wait to go back!

Honky tonk on a hot day.

Stumbled across Skinny Dennis on a scorching day in Brooklyn. They had live country music, cold beer and air con, all very enjoyable! People were dead friendly in there too.

Great shop, great atmosphere, nice people

I came to the Caraoke and stayed until the end, and would have happily stayed longer. Good and cheap beer selection, great place. If you like country music and a simple pub, this is the place for you.

Fun Honky Tonk Dive Bar

Stumbled on it one Sunday afternoon. The place was busy enough to be fun. Sat at the bar and drank the speciality, Boozy Iced Coffee and had some hot nuts. Drinks cheap. Great music. Well worth a visit.

Buzzin bar with great live music

By SGavin |

On a snowy Sunday afternoon the bar was packed, the band was hot and the Lonestar was cold! I didn't get to see any of the great classic country bands I've heard frequent the place. It was more of a Thin Lizzy meets Bob Dylan vibe but still fun. Nice to see the younger generation getting out for live music. Hope the tip bucket was full.

Nice bar

Looks like a honky think from my old town in the Central Valley of California - except they have great music of the Country and Western variety. Service can be a touch scattered -- but reasonable prices and no cover.

Here's the Skinny...

This is just a cool dive bar with live music. It really was not divey, it was just earthy and filled with young local hipsters. Stopped in for a night cap after dinner. The bar had a good selection of beers and drinks. The beers were pretty cheap, for the city. A guy on a guitar sang in the corner and was pretty good. After sets he'd walk around with a tip can. He played some covers including Dylan. In between you could play from the juke box that was loaded with older and eclectic music. They also had one of those classic shuffleboard bowling pin games with the sand on the game area. The bartenders were nice and quick. Would have liked to hang for a longer time but we spent about 30 minutes and then moved on to the next place.

Amazing, authentic feel.

My partner and I stopped in here for a beer to kill some time before our tour at the Brooklyn Brewery (which was great). She had seen a blogger she follows come here and it looked amazing. It was happy hour so it was $1 off all drafts so for two big beers it was just $6! This bar has a real authentic feel, it’s absolutely amazing. We went around 3pm on Wednesday so it was quite which was perfect for what we wanted but I’d love to come back for an evening of live music and get a feel for the energy here. A definite must when visiting Brooklyn.

What a find - great fun

This is a fantastic bar, loads to take in including peanut shells on the floor, wine in a can and live music. This bar has so much atmosphere and is great fun. I highly recommend a visit.

Worst experience

By Linda54321184 |

Myself and my collegues entered this bar around midnight. Spirits were high until we arrived. When we approached the bar we were greeted by a barman, with only what I can describe as a disgraceful attitude. Firstly, he served us the wrong drinks and upon raising the issue, the barman in question sniggered and refuted our claims. When we questioned his decision, he explained that we “had bad vibes” and that we were “breaking his balls not tipping sufficiently”, however on the contrary every member of our party had been generous in their recognition of the said barman’s work. We will never be back. Shocking.

Great bar for live music, cheap beer. hot peanuts.

We had a great time at Skinny Dennis. The band was the regular friday night band. They were excellent. The beer ( draft) was $5 for a 20 oz and their was a great selection. The place gets quite crowded , but that was part of the fun. Get there early if you want to sit down.

Fun place

Can you imagine the bouncer carding a senior citizen? Yep he did and undaunted I pulled out my senior metro card Fun dive bar inhabited by nice young adults. Had a great ice cold chocolate with whiskey. Great way to end a day out with friends.

Great fun place for a taste of the south

By Sam W |

Great fun dive bar for cheap beers and good fun honky tonk music in an intimate environment. Was still packed in here when we left at 1.30am. Full of locals which is a great sign and away from the tourist traps of manhattan.

Terrific

Stopped in for beer and music. $5 for a Brooklyn Lager and $7 for a scotch for the wife; she said it tasted like Glenlivet. That's my girl! Excellent music and a relaxed vibe.

Honkey Tonk in Brooklyn.

If you find yourself in Brooklyn, check this place out! We stumbled across Skinny Dennis a couple of years ago and return every time we’re in NY. Amazing performances by talented country musicians and good beer at fair prices. Highly recommend 👍🏼

Very nice neighboorhood bar

By Xuan Nam N |

Was visiting NY with a friend and we decided to go bar hopping in Williamsburg. This bar has a very nice neighboorhood feel. A band was playing live music and the beers on tap were pretty good and cheap. Definitely recommend to check it out!

Michelle is a Queen

By Gary F |

I once got a BJ from a Rockette... My time at Skinny Dennis has officially made that my second favorite NYC experience. Michelle (Skinny Dennis, not the Rockette) truly made us feel so welcomed and it was our favorite bar we visited in our 3 days in BKN.

A great western dive bar

By Nate080411 |

Come here if you want a dive bar. The inside is a western theme and the live music they had playing was in line with that. They don’t have many seats so get there early if you want to be comfortable before the crowds roam in. Which they will, it seems very popular. They have a no nonsense line up of drinks and shots. The bartenders are the type where we want to get right to the point so don’t be slow with your order. Great dive experience in this neighbors, a must.

Scam

By Jol Garcia |

We were a group of 8 people and the bouncer (Rubén) charged us 5 dollars each to get in and we found out that people that, got there before and after we did, didn't have to pay. We couldn't make a formal complain even though we were clearly scammed.

Great dive bar with good booze & music.

By royalfunknesss |

Cheap drinks, friendly staff, country music and was busy! The best bar we found in Williamsburg. Special shout out to the bouncer, Ruben, who was really friendly on the doors.

Great bar!

We enjoyed a very fun night here with cheap beers, free peanuts, great bartenders, a fun crowd and awesome music - highly recommend!

Stopped by here for drinks and to see the band. Really fun atmosphere. The coffee drinks are also pretty awesome.

Dive bar heaven

Cheap beers, free nuts, friendly staff dirty music and dirtier floors, dive bar perfection Brooklyn’s finest

Quirky Brooklyn Jazz Bar

By David H |

Great little gem tucked away on a quiet Brooklyn street. The bar is small with a tiny stage in one corner - but the musicians make the place feel colossal. If you're looking for a fun any day of the week, recommend Skinny Dennis for a casual night with friends.

Love It

By JDB |

Love it. Solid country bar. Oddly enough, it is a better country bar than those back home in the south lol. Good dive bar, nothing advanced or over-the-top. Just a solid all around place to have some fun. Highly recommend, and will return.

Great relaxed place for some honky tong country music

By Birgitte M |

Loved this little intimate bar with really great athmosphere. Entrance is free but in the breaks the band came around for tips. Cheap beer and warm peanuts. There was a 3 person band playing this sunday afternoon which was really good and I can believe it only gets better in the evenings. Go there if you like some good country music!

Brilliant dive bar

By louisa9910 |

We went on a Tuesday night and it was still really busy with a great atmosphere and live music. Loud but fun with an awesome decor. Good draught beers and great quick service.

What it says on the label - 'Honkey-Tonk Dive Bar'

By Sharman v |

I enjoyed the atmosphere of Skinny Dennis. We missed the first band's set but caught the second band. Drinks reasonably priced. Had a meal before we went so no comment on food. The loos (restrooms/bathrooms) are unisex and covered in graffiti - Brilliant. Worth the experience.

Addicting iced coffee

By Cotii |

Picture this: two tourists in New York leaded by a girl who has lived in Brooklyn her whole life. We wanted to experience an authentic place and this was exactly what we were looking for. I'm really not a fan of coffee, but since I had heard the many wonders of their iced coffee with whiskey I had to give it a try. I'm so glad I did because it was delicious. The only down side I can think of is that there wasn't any live music at the time and I would have loved to experience it. If you are in the area is worth to give it a try.
