Visiting Portland for the first time, I was specifically looking for everything unique it had to offer. This place did not disappoint. The griddle is built right into the table and you get to pick everything from your batter type to the filling, to the toppings. There are both savory and sweet selections and you get a generous amount of each (in fact, my friend and I probably could have shared 1 portion of each thing we ordered). The atmosphere is fun and open and the service was fantastic. I was expecting it to be a little gimmicky so wasn't expecting great quality food, but to my surprise, the quality was DELICIOUS! I would DEFINITELY come back here on my desk visit and wish there was one closer to me!!! Oh...and get the chicken fried bacon! To DIE for!

Took my daughter and grandsons during spring break.... yes, we did have to wait a while (45 minutes) but the wait was so worth it.... my youngest grandson (7) was "starving" and the hostess brought him some strawberries to hold him over.... that was something I have never seen in a restaurant. I do want to go again but not during spring break. The line was out the door many times during our wait and eating. The tables have built in griddles and you can choose your pancake option and toppings. They also have regular breakfast if you want that. The waitress was extremely helpful as it was our first time there. Interesting that both the hostess and our waitress were named Nora and both from the East Coast.... coincidence... They were awesome.

This is a very unique concept of making your own pancakes at your table. The kids loved it of course. Make sure not to order too much batter though as there will be a lot left over. ONE batter for 2 adults or 3 kids is plenty.

My 4-year old nephew was in town so I wanted to do something fun for him. The idea of creating your own pancakes excited him. We arrived at 9 am on a Thurs morning. Be prepared to wait. Even on a weekday, the place gets busy. However, the hostess will text you as soon as your table is ready. We waited about 30 minutes for a four-top. Once seated, our friendly server arrived and briefly explained the menu. In addition to bottles of pancake mix, there are plenty of savory options too including avocado toast, bacon, eggs, etc. We ordered buttermilk pancakes, peanut butter and toppings that included bacon, banana and pulverized hazelnuts. It’s definitely fun to watch the kids create their own pancakes. My nephew couldn’t get enough of squirting batter from the bottle and flipping. I was disappointed with the peanut butter batter as I didn’t really taste the pb...the buttermilk was good, however. We spent about $40 for the four of us. Not too bad considering the amount of food one gets. Definitely recommend.

Fun and good pancakes! I'm sure loaded with sugar but who cares! The kids love it as much as adults.

Well here we were visiting from England and found no better way in the whole of our 7 weeks in America to immerse ourselves in the American culture than breakfast at Slappy Cakes !!! Staff, service, food and all round uniqueness of the place was great. It was so much fun cooking pancakes at our table. Best US experience for our kids and very hands on !!

My elementary age kids LOVE slappy cakes. The fact they can cook their own pancakes right on the table grill is very novel. The grill is low heat so although you need to keep an eye on kids, never had an issue with concerns of burns. We bring visitors from out if town here because it’s such a niche. Be prepared for a leisurely meal as the heat is so low, it takes longer to cook pancakes. Lots of different flavors & toppings. I ordered a delicious omelet made in the kitchen and there are many non-pancake options. No reservations taken so be prepared to get there before opening or wait. There’s some kids toys available in the small lobby. A must for a leisurely weekeNd with kids. Gluten free options.

Took my grandson for breakfast at Slappy Cakes, he wanted to show us how to make our own pancakes. You sit at a table with a griddle in front of you & you order different kinds of pancake batter. Especially since my grandson is dairy free, which they have with lots of add ins. My husband had a regular breakfast, the hash browns were delicious. A great place to go but only street parking.

Waited about a half hour almost lunch time, but worth every minute! Try the chocolate pancake batter with coconut and chocolate chips, the bomb! Also mix the buttermilk and chocolate batter..... So good! Great date place!

Based on my one, single experience, I would consider Slappy Cakes overrated. Plu,for small children, it is can be dangerous. PROS: Entertaining - if you like to prepare your own food. My kids loved baking their own pancakes, but I opted for the kitchen to prepare mine (no extra charge). Friendly and helpful staff Good food - My wife enjoyed the Eggs Benedict. I loved the potatoes. Trendy - if you're into that sort of thing Free parking - not always the case in Portland Vegetarian options - vegetarian bacon and sausage CONS: Long wait - My party of eight waited 1 hour on a Sunday for lunch, but the waiter mentioned waits of up to 2 1/2 hours on a common Sunday! Is this a theme park? Unprofessional appearance - While courteous and friendly, the staff donned street clothes. My waiter even wore a baseball cap. There was no real way to decipher the employees from the customers. Mediocre food - the peanut butter batter of my pancake had only a faint hint of peanut butter flavor. IHOP's pancakes are just as good from my viewpoint, although more exotic choices exist here. HOT GRILL - I understand the whole DIY concept, but the grill at each table is flush with the table top, less than a plate's diameter from each diner. We kept a close eye on the kids, but my 5-year-old, although nothing serious, managed to burn himself within five minutes of being seated. As of note, the grill remains heated the entire time. Overall, Slappy Cakes is a decent, fun restaurant, but I don't think it is worth waiting more than 30 minutes.

What a fun experience. We have 5 people in our family - 3 of them boys ranging from 19-13. So, eating is as much as a part of our day as breathing. This placed rocked it. We got 3 tubes of batter and that was a little much. So, keep that in mind when ordering. We also enjoyed the chicken fried bacon. 2 slices were enough for everyone. Very rich and filling, but oh so yummy. In addition to the pancakes, the migas were a huge hit, as was the spinach grits with poached eggs and ham. We were stuffed afterward. Liked it so much, mom got a t shirt! Highly recommended for families.

We enjoyed our meal here. By mid morning on a weekday there was a 1.5 hr wait time. I would recommend that you arrive early. We each ordered two ingredients and added two plates of deep fried bacon. Our bill ended up at about $70 for the four of us.

We were just in town visiting, so it was worth the $65 breakfast to let the kids enjoy making a mess somewhere other than my kitchen. This unique experience was fun for vacation and I would do again if I had to pick, but way too expensive to make a regular breakfast spot.

We had a large party on a Sunday, they accommodated us within an hour. This place is really cool, you make your own pancakes in the center of the table and it's fun! I had the eggs and grits and it was to die for. Their omelets and other egg dishes are simply the best! Friendly, fast and courteous service with a hip vibe and fun music. Definitely worth the adventure!

We enjoyed our meal. Even thought it gets pretty busy they were able to accommodate us. Go early, but the wait time is definite worth it. I love the chicken fried steak.

They currently open at 8:00 a.m. and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, by 9:00 a.m. the line can be frightening. We walked in at 8:20 a.m. and instantly had a table. They've redone their menu in the last couple of years, and installed new griddles at the tables. The old ones required oil to avoid sticking, and it was easy to burn yourself. The new ones feel safer and are easier to manage. I liked, also, the new menu. More variety than before ... and less emphasis on the make your own concept. It's not cheap, but you have to try it at least once!

It's hard for us to find unique restaurants where my teenage daughter feels safe due to sensitive food allergies. Not only is Slappy Cakes unique, they were very accommodating of her allergies. As soon as we let them know she had sensitive allergies, they removed the table's griddle and returned with a griddle cleaned for her special needs. Our family of four tried the buttermilk batter and the seasonal (gingerbread) batter with various add-ins to accommodate various cravings. My husband and younger daughter loved the lemon curd and blueberries. My older daughter was happy to have chocolate chips and white chocolate chips. My brunch order from the kitchen was fantastic. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. It's worth the long wait on the weekend.... since we're not from Portland, hanging out at Movie Madness during the wait was perfect.

We had such fun ordering and making pancakes for my granddaughters 3rd and 5th birthdays. Love the concept of the griddle in the middle of the table. Glad they had a gluten free option. The batter was not the greatest but the mix ins I added helped. My daughter and son in law ordered off the menu (mushroom scramble and pork belly benedict) and loved their respective meals. Our server was friendly, but not terribly attentive; had to ask for refills on coffee and the egg on the side I ordered. Will go back the next time I'm in PDX.

I've been to Slappy Cakes several times and it's always fun to bring school age kids here to get the experience of making their own pancakes and choosing the toppings, etc. But the last couple times I've been there, the latest in June 2016, the restaurant has been an oven! All the tables with all their heated up grills just creates such an immense heat in the room, it's pretty uncomfortable. They have a glass paneled garage door at the front of the restaurant but even when it's hot, I haven't seen them keep it open to cool the place down. They could use some ceiling fans or intense exhaust system to help disperse the heat. Until then, I'd recommend staying away from Slappy Cakes in the warmer months when it's especially bad. Other than that, the batters and toppings are good, and plentiful, and the premise is a lot of fun. Just make sure you dress lightly and be prepared for the heat.

What makes this unique is the griddle on each table where you can design and cook your custom pancakes. You choose a batter, fillings and toppings. Then you can make them any size and add as much or as few of the fillings as you prefer. We recommend buttermilk with hazelnuts and buttermilk with cheddar, scallions and sautéed forest mushrooms. Also serves Stumptown coffee. Staff is friendly. You get a lot of batter for the price.

Go here for the experience, not so much for the food. Cooking your own pancakes right at the table, dressing them up just the way that suits you - fun for adults, heaven for kids, great entertainment when you put the two together. Just don't expect it to be inexpensive fun, or gourmet food.

Literally the only reason to go here is for the novelty of making your own pancakes, and it's almost certainly that you'd come here because your kids, or other kids visiting, want to come here. The wait is almost invariably an hour or more. You can get text alerts, but I don't trust the hostessing. It has taken --no exaggeration -- 10 minutes just to even put my NAME into the queue. Plus, the waiting area is ridiculously small. If it wasn't for some very good kids wanting to come here, I'd foreswear ever coming back. Also, if you do come, know that they UNDERestimate the quoted wait. They've gone over every time they've ever quoted me. Except for my kids super infrequent requests, it's just not worth it. Edit: for our last visit (wait was double the quote), in their rush to finally seat us, they rushed through cleaning the table. Our grill was dirty as hell so we had to turn it off and clean it again. So over it here.

Visited for the first time with family that had been to the Maui location. They had loved that one so much and were skeptical about if this one could live up to it. Fortunately for both us and them, this place is amazing. The atmosphere is very chic, with exposed wood styling on the roof, cool and good-sized booths for sitting, and, though busy and loud, we were still able to talk normally. We tried the seasonal pancake batter, which came to the table immediately (good after waiting a long time for a table). This was great - good pumpkin flavor with light spice. We also tried the banana bread french toast (something the Maui location is famous for), and the home fries (which are dangerously addictive). We tried the eggs benedict. It was really great, but had a little bit of spice to it (kids still ate it even with the spice). While waiting, there is a great little cart pod across the street with an amazing little coffee cart and a rain sheltered warming area (and phenomenal cannoli), so even though the waits are really long, it was pretty enjoyable.

Visited with small children and had a great time. Ordered pancakes with 8 different ingredients. Let very full and children had a great time making their own breakfast!

We so love this place! How much fun! You can choose your toppings, they have savory or sweet selections, you can choose gluten free, and it's just great to cook your own pancakes!

• Not within walking distance from downtown hotels and / or the waterfront (across bridge from downtown Portland) - located near Mt. Tabor area • Full service restaurant offering more than just pancakes (also have a decent size menu); service was very good • Non-stick grill on each table to make your own pancakes (you just pick the batter and the toppings you want) • We ordered one bottle of batter to get the experience of Slappy Cakes (kind of like a breakfast appetizer) but also ordered food off the menu • Pancakes were good and it was fun to make your own at the table; however we felt the other food on the menu is probably overlooked as it was quite delicious • We had the breakfast burrito and classic eggs benedict for our main meals; both were great but the breakfast burrito probably was one of the best we have ever had • We would absolutely recommend a visit to Slappy Cakes and highly suggest ordering food off of the menu in addition to trying the whole pancake thing out

Very small portions. No one refilled the coffee. One serving of butter for 3 people. Extremely hot. Huge ceiling fan not being used. $50 for 3 people + 1 toddler and we left still hungry.

Had a delightful, fun filled breakfast of DIY pancakes with the family! It wasn't just breakfast - it was food art and creation! Go early to beat the crowd - we were the first in at 8 am. When leaving it was packed and there was a line. Worth the price and ready to go back!!

This place is fabulous and the idea to make your own pancake by your desk is magnificent. Atmosphere is warm and all the waitresses are polite. We had pancake and scrumbled eggs also . Deeeeelecious! Have to go again!

Had the GF Savory cakes: pancakes with jalapeno, cheddar cheese, bacon, and I added sausage. It was AWESOME. Making your own pancakes is also a lot of fun too. Definitely come early, there is a long wait like most Portland breakfast places on the weekend. We got there at 845am and were seated right away but the crew that came in at 9am had to wait for 20+ minutes I'm sure. Lots of fun in a cool neighborhood, highly recommended.

Party of 6 took a short wait @ 8:30 on Father's Day. The eggs, potatoes and bacon breakfasts were very good. The pancake experience was sloppy. The grill was not set hot enough. Waitress had to turn it up twice. The initial oiling was inadequate. We had to ask for more. They tell you not to use the outer 2" of the grill. I would say 4". They warn you about smaller pancakes cooking better. True. If you order the add on extras, you will try larger cakes...which in our case was a mess with low heat.

We visited Slappy Cakes with a 5 and 7 year old and 3 adults. We got there just a few minutes after they opened at 8am on a Sunday and were the last ones seated, would have been a 40 minute wait had we not arrived when they opened. Keep this in mind if you plan to go, I would plan to be there right at 8, or plan on waiting. We ordered several different types of batter and several different things to put in the pancakes, from fruit to chocolate chips to bacon. We found it best to order a few and share with the group. We had 4 different batters for five people, but could have easily done fine with 3, but we wanted to try them (the chocolate and peanut butter together were a good combination). The service was good, lots of coffee refilled often. The kids really enjoyed making their own pancakes, our 7 year old could do it with ease, 5 year old decided to let us do the cooking and he just added toppings. I recommend this place, especially for a fun breakfast with kids - not only are the pancakes good, but it's entertainment all at the same time.

This is a must visit for all families with children. We were there with our 6 and 9 year old grandchildren. Shortly after sitting down, we ordered 2 kinds of pancake batter and it was brought to the table almost immediately. The kids had a blast making designs with the batter and cooking their own breakfast. There are a ton of toppings so the kids were able to customize their order. The grown ups were able to order a regular delicious breakfast. I would say this is the best breakfast experience I can imagine for children.

This place has very saucy and dank food that everyone can enjoy. Chicken fried bacon is the bomb. Pb, choc, and buttermilk batters all make the cut.

It's a really fun place to eat. In the center of your table is a pancake griddle and they give you the pancake batter and the toppings so you can draw fun shapes with your pancakes! We got the lemon poppyseed batter and it was really good.

We had two different kinds of batter and had a great time making big and little cakes. One of the party opted to order from their regular breakfast menu and was not disappointed at all. We went during the week, much better for us since there was little waiting and great service. Sundays in particular are quite busy. If you like and "experience" with your meal, you will love Slappy Cakes!

whoever invented Slappy Cakes is a pure genius. you get to have all of the fun of making your own pancakes without any of the cleanup. They have six different Butters to choose from and an endless array of toppings you can choose from from sweet to Savory our bill was really inexpensive I said myself my husband and our 6 year old daughter for less than $25. We will definitely be back. the great part is that if they have a wait you can walk up and down the street or visit the coffee cart across from them and they will text you when your table is ready.

We arrived around 8:30 on a Saturday and there was a 20 minute wait. We walked across the street to get coffee and waited in the heated tent till we were texted that our table was ready. The food was amazing (chicken fried bacon, bloody, pumpkin pancakes were my favorite). We really enjoyed the experience.

Decided to go to breakfast and knew we’ve been wanting to come here. Very busy for a Tuesday morning and a 45 minutes wait. I like the text messaging system they have set up, so that we could walk around if we wanted. Boys, of course had DIY pancakes, hubby had a mushroom omelette (he said it was good, but not great, & I on the other hand had Pork Belly Benedict and it was wicked awesome!! Probably one of the best Eggs Benedict I’ve had! Bloody Mary’s were tasty as well!!

They offer a table with a griddle and when you order, you have your choice of several different batters, toppings, etc. There is a gluten-free/vegan option, which I had that was very good. Also, our server, Say, was very attentive and very nice. Finally, my daughter had the salmon, which is smoked in-house, and she said it was great. All in all, good quality, great tasting food and great service all at a decent price.

Love this place. Great for kids and adults. Great menu and consistently good food. GF vegan options. Wish the coffee were better.

The concept is unique. The activity does provide some entertainment for the kids, actually forcing them to put down their phones. The food quality is decent, but not so high that it justifies waiting in a long line too often. Gluten free and Vegan options.

It was our first time to Slappy Cakes...we will definitely be back! I would recommend getting a bottle of pancake batter per person, but mix and match your toppings so you can create some wonderful and unique flavors! We went with chocolate batter and the seasonal, which was orange lavender (amazing!). What a fun way to spend a lunch and eat breakfast dessert!

Slappy cakes will not disappoint. We did not do the “make your own pancakes at your table” which I’m sure are awesome, but, instead we ordered the “Pork Belly Benedicts”!!! They were divine! They even make their own inhouse, homemade English Muffins.....OMG! Ate every single bite and wiped the plate clean. Also, if your a Bloody Mary person.....definitely try their spice Mary. It’s not too hot but, just right. The service was fantastic and personable. Would definitely return when back in town.

Cook your own pancakes but be warned YOU WILL WAIT for the privilege! The staff is not warm and fuzzy and the kitchen is a little slow but the food is good. They have gf/vegan options and plenty of options for other types of eaters. They can accommodate larger parties and while the wait is long it was an adventure to let everyone make their own food!

Let's just say that's how our grandchildren tried to convey this awesome eatery. What a wonderful experience! As other reviewers have stated, this place gets crowded, so we arrived an hour prior to closing - no problem. The menu is full of opportunities - you can DIY it or be served. I chose the "Toad in a Hole", which was absolutely delicious - not to mention the Bloody Mary! Others in our party were pleased with the Seasonal Vegetable Benedict and/or Scramble. The grandkids new immediately that they were going to DIY it all the way and loved the sweet potato and the buttermilk batter, plus all the toppings you could dream of. It was great fun - recommend it highly and we will always keep this on the itinerary for future trips to Portland.

We have heard great things about this place, so we finally decided to try it out. The wait for us on a Sunday morning at 9 am was 40 minutes. They make it so you can receive a text and come back after you receive it. This worked out decently for us as we went in expecting a long wait. After we were seated we had great service. They checked in regularly even though it was busy and brought out food for my son early as he was getting restless since he hadn’t eaten yet. The food in our party was mostly thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had the basic pancakes with toppings, the avocado toast, the veggie benedict and the chicken fried steak. The pancakes were very delicious, better than we can make at home that is for sure. The avocado toast was also really great. It was sort of a small portion, but we were glad we ordered it as it was delicious. My chicken fried steak was also really really good. It comes with potatoes which are also just as tasty. The only thing not enjoyed at our table was the veggie benedict. I did not have it but my mother said that it had way too much fennel and that benedict sauce did not taste like what she was used to. She did not care for it, but I didn’t try it so take that for what it is worth. Overall, we all agreed that this place was worth the wait and lots of fun. We will definitely be back.

Always on the hunt for a good GF breakfast spot. This one didn't disappoint. But, I think it would be more fun with kids. No wait and surprisingly good GF pancake batter! Oh my gosh- and the lemon curd was amazing! I had a special with a GF english muffin. Very delicious! Nice wait staff, too.

This was my first time at Slappy Cakes. We throughly enjoyed the restaurant atmosphere and the build it yourself pancakes. The negatives I have are small. The restaurant will take a very long time to seat you with a part over six. Not many large tables for larger groups. Also remember 18 gratuity for parties 6 or more! The pancake batter was good but pricy. Don't need more than one bottle per person; two can share with plenty of batter there. The griddles are set low temp for safety so expect 20 min per pancake, so make em big!

We went on Father's day so there was a bit of a wait, but they had chalk to draw on the sidewalk outside the restaurant which was quirky and fun. You can order pancake batter to cook on the griddle at your table with all different ingredients to add. We both had the Slappy's Benedict which was delicious! This is a fun family place that we would certainly return to when we are in Portland again!

We had a good breakfast here. Making our own pancakes at the table keeps kids entertained and occupied, and the regular breakfast mains were pretty good. The staff were polite and quick as well.

we had to wait 55 min lol, but it was worth it. walked around, got some coffee at the sit down shop across the street. they text you when your table is ready. the neighborhood is really nice and easy to take the kids for a walk around the area, seemed safe in the morning. parking kind of sucked but we got lucky and found a spot right out front. otherwise, I have no clue where ppl park, there were a lot of signs that said 'no parking' all over. our bill was only $15 and then a tip. ("we" will be my husband, our 1 & 3 yr olds and myself) we ordered the one batter (buttermilk, what you would expect, yummy lol but nothing different) and then a few toppings at like, $2 per topping, we got strawberries, honey, and two cream things to pour, not sure the flavors, lemon something and then a cinnamon thing- both good. the meal made for a good snack. we didn't go there to get full, just to let the kids play/cook. they loved it and we loved watching them have fun. my husband mentioned that we make the same pancakes at home, but it just felt different and better for our 3 yr old to make it for us in this setting. we weren't watching tv like at home, but focused on her lol. :) if the kids want to on our next Portland road trip, we would take them back. but for grown ups w no kids, I don't see the appeal. they do offer a menu w normal breakfast stuff, and maybe that is extraordinary? lol somehow, I just doubt it. also, the bathrooms were FILTHY, like, really gross. it could've just been I went in after an incredibly disgusting person, but there was just piss everywhere and it smelled like someone had just barfed. seriously gross. im giving this place 5 stars anyway bc the idea is great for kids and we did all have a lot of fun and the staff was nice. once you sit down and order, its fast. we were in and out in about 45 min.

Friends told us about Slappy Cakes saying it was a must do when in Portland. They were right - what a fun place for breakfast!! The wait can be long since they don't take reservations, but well worth it. The wait staff is great - very personable, friendly and helpful. You can order "regular" breakfast fare, but you must order the pancakes. The batter comes in many selections as well as the toppings. The fun begins as you start to make your pancakes on the grill I front of you. Your creative side takes over as you start making designs with the batter. We had a wonderful time - both children and adults.

What a fun experience. We stopped in at 8:30am and had a 40 min wait but they take your cell and text you when it is your time. For 2, a bottle of batter was plenty, as were 2 mix ins. We shouldn't have ordered sides- too much of a good thing. We ended up getting our fruit bowl boxed up. Fun to make the pancakes, good prices and friendly staff. Good for families and group eating.

Very unique breakfast spot with griddles on the tables so you custom make your own pancakes. Would be a great place to take the kids! The pork belly eggs Benedict was to die for !!!

Our group of five tried Slappy Cakes for the first time. The kids ordered different batters, the adults tried a variation of eggs Benedict and I had plain old bacon and eggs with potatoes and biscuit with gravy. I've had better biscuits and gravy at free hotel breakfasts. The potatoes are deep fried and just ok. The eggs over easy were also just ok. We liked the eggs Benedict variation but the real hit was the pancakes. It was fun to make our own and they were tasty. The apple juice was delicious and tasted fresh. Slappy Cakes is a gimmicky place that is fun if you've got kids or haven't been before. I can't imagine returning with just adults for a breakfast. The food is not that big of a draw here and the prices are pretty high. We are glad we tried it and we had fun, I don't think we will be back.

I loved this. Came to Portland with a group of friends and we met here for breakfast on one of our mornings. Great, original idea of making your own pancakes at your table. LOVE that they had gluten free options so I could partake in the fun.

We took the grandkids here Sat. There was a wait of about 30 minutes but it was worth it. You can order multiple batter flavors and toppings for your pancakes. The grill is on the table. Our three year old could make her own cakes. Such fun! There are other choices on the menu and lots of sides. I thought it was a little expensive but it was a treat!

You've seen YouTube videos of people squirting pancake batter from ketchup bottles, making their own lopsided unicorns and spaceships, yeah? Well, this is your chance to do that, without going to the hassle of the prep and clean-up! You pay by the bottle. They have traditional buttermilk, chocolate, peanut butter, and something seasonal (blueberry lavender when we went). We tried them all except the peanut butter. Then you pay per type of topping, too. We didn't go super crazy with those. The pancakes were actually really great pancakes (when we gauged their doneness appropriately), but the fun is why we came, and it lived up to the hype. My 9yo daughter wanted me to add this: "My review is 7 words: This place is uh mm aa zing!!!"

This place is great! I only live a few blocks away and force all of my hungover friends to go, when they are in town. Adulting can be tough when slightly hung over, but this place makes it fun. Prepare to wait in line if you aren't there early, eating at the bar is also a great alternative.

Came here with my 10 year old and had a blast! The pancakes were good but of course it’s all about getting to create pancake art :) The only downside was the long wait to get a table but it was worth it.

This is the place for hot cakes. Each table has a skillet to cook your own pancakes. Choose what you want in your cakes. Priced accordingly. They also serve a full breakfast menu. I had tje ham and eggs. Great food, friendly quick service

Went with my teen son. Street parking. Had to park a few blocks away. The food is great. One bottle of pancake mix is plenty for 2 to 3 people. The fruit or choc chips to put in batter add up. Bacon, potatoes, or sausage ala carte. We had a great time and food was great.

My review reflects a Friday visit with my brother and his family. There were 7 of us. They handled the group (which included a 2 year old and a 4 year old) with total aplomb. This is a wonderful family place. The idea: you get plastic squeeze bottles of pancake mix, and items (like bacon, sausage, fruit) to mix in. There's a griddle on the table, and everyone gets to make their own pancakes. There's also an array of syrups and sauces. My pancakes were buttermilk, with sausage and a savory mornay sauce. Delicious! Some people went for eggs, extra bacon, and the like. Everything was good. And everyone was entertained.

They provide the batter and the fixings, and you get to grill your own flapjacks at the table. It's a lot of fun..... just trust me. Definitely worth hitting up! We visited on a busy Saturday morning but went early enough to be seated fairly quickly. Other reviews will cover ingredients available more in depth, but they basically have several types of batter you can order with a multitude of toppings available for you to make your own pancakes right at your table. If you do not feel like cooking, they will make pancakes for you or if your tastes run to something different, there are many other breakfast options on the menu. We had great service. The friendly server explained the menu and options, and the meal was delivered quickly. Go; go with friends, children, family - just go and have a good time and a great breakfast!

Last time we went to Slappy Cakes they had the oven baked pancake with lemon curd and rhubarb, which was amazing! I was so bummed they didn't have it this time. BUT, the cheddar bacon biscuits (I think called bacon pops) were good, as was the bacon jam to spread on it. I personally enjoy sitting at the bar where you can watch them cook all the food and ponder what meal to order next. It's also much easier to get a seat faster, if you're willing to sit at the bar. However, if you have kids the bigger tables are definitely for you.

This place is amazing. Our teens loved making their own pancakes and we (the adults) were able to enjoy a healthy breakfast too. If you have never been, you have to go!

It was fun to make your own pancakes. My 7 year old thought he was quite the chef. $6.50 for 8oz of batter is fine. To add each topping is 2.00, not a huge surprise I guess when your in the city but $4.50 for hot cocoa!? Fun to try things once, right? Concept is cool. The vibe is lacking.

We had such a great time! I would definitely recommend. They do offer other items besides pancakes. Their seasonal batter was blueberry lavender which was amazing. Although we had to wait over an hour, It was neat experience.

I have not been there, but I love Slappy Cakes because my daughter and husband go there regularly as part of a father-daughter breakfast tradition. They rave about it, and they are both picky. Anything good enough to inspire them to go back again and again wins my vote.

I can't remember where I heard of this place, but I decided to make a trip since I love breakfast. Choose your batter, and fixin's-one bottle of pancake batter will make 5-6 mid size pancakes. I chose buttermilk (their seasonal flavor was lavender) with white chocolate chips, strawberries, and hazelnuts with a side of chicken fried bacon (it was just a tad overdone/extra extra crispy). It was so much fun to be able to try my hand at pancake art, I was able to make some pretty cool pancakes. They serve Stumptown coffee (♥!) and the Bloody Mary was SPICY! You can tell that they really cared about the quality of their food, it was delicious. They also offer bennies, scrambles, and a good variety of other breakfast plates. The dining area is large, open and airy; went on a Thursday morning and seated right away. This is an appropriate place for people of all ages, not just kids. I would definitely go again especially when they have some different seasonal flavors...

This was my first visit to Slappy Cakes. You choose from tubes of batter, then toppings, then cook them on a grill built into your table. We got buttermilk, chocolate and the seasonal lemon poppy seed. We shared batter & toppings between us. We had a lot of fun! Try to go during the week because weekends are crazy busy!

I visited Slappy Cakes during spring break and the place was hoppin'! We waited about 45 minutes but they gave us the option of texting a cell phone when our table was ready. I loved this convenience and wonder why there aren't more restaurants that offer this. For breakfast, I ordered the buttermilk pancake mix. There were 3 of us and we all ordered different toppings and shared a little. I love the variety of pancake toppings they offer at Slappy Cakes. I also ordered a side of candied bacon. Delicious! I don't live in Portland, so it's a real treat to visit Slappy Cakes when I'm in town yovi sit my sister.

Got there a little before 10 and had a short wait before we were seated at a long "community" table. My nephew ordered the chocolate batter along with peanut butter and maple syrup. I shared the lemon poppy seed seasonal batter with my sister. Each serving of batter gives you about 5 decent size pancakes. If you are doing some designing you should have plenty to share and enjoy. Syrup is on the table so unless you need real maple syrup skip ordering as a topping. Batter, fixins" & toppings are all separate prices so see if you can share because they do give you a lot. Be prepared to help the little ones cook as you do this at the griddle in the middle of the table. Let them be creative but remind them they need to still flip their pancakes.

We have visited this restaurant many times here in Portland and at the branch in Singapore. It is best to come with more than 1 kid so they can entertain themselves making the smallest/biggest/fanciest/most artsy pancake. Even better as a birthday meal. Fun for all!

Do you like breakfast? Do you like Hibachi? This place was wild. I've never heard of a pancake hibachi restaurant until a friend suggested it for breakfast. Six of us were able to get in before 10, and I was immediately amused by all the options. We took turns using the grill and it was really easy and a lot of fun. I even got myself a mug! 10/10 would hibachi again.

We had a blast, food was great, not just the pancakes everything was good.Staff very helpfull in getting you started, how to cook and what to order. The pancakes with dried cherries and homemade applesauce with a topping of whipped cream WOW. Fun for all ages, we had my 88 year old mother and she was having a great time. Try the pork belly benedict with bacone fat hollandase along with pancakes and you will be living high on the hog. You arteries will never be the same but it is worth it.

These were so good. I had the strawberry shortcakes and my daughter made her own strawberry shortcake pancakes. Love!

Wow...if you are looking for a place to entertain your kids, teach them how to make pancakes without the mess in your house or just looking for great food, great bloody mary's and great service Slappy Cakes is for you! What a pleasant find for my first day in Portland. From the moment we walked in, to the explanation about how you cook your own pancakes to answering any questions, they entire staff was great. A MUST DO if you are visiting Portland or even if you live here. There is something for everyone.

I live really close to this place, and I like it. It can seem a bit crazy in there because it is definitely a place for families because it is fun to make your own cakes. I've gone here with my nieces and friend's kids and they love it. It is very fun to do that, but there can be a huge wait for that kind of thing. You can always drop a name and go for a walk through the neighbourhood or go grab a cup of coffee at love coffee across the street. My partner and I go here every now and then and go straight for the bar and never have had to wait a second to get seated. The non-pancake menu is actually really good. I love the chicken fried steak, and my partner loves the mushroom scramble and grits. The coffee is very good here, and never thin. The prices are very decent for the non-pancake items. I think it can be a little bit more if your making your own cakes, but it all depends on your choice of toppings. This place is fun and very tasty. I am also done to go in here and sit at the bar. Definitely if you are thinking about taking a big group here (more than 6 people) it is going to be a big wait on the weekend. On weekdays, it is pretty easy to get in though. It is mainly a family stop on the weekend it seems to me, but blows any other family oriented food place out of the water.

I read the other reviews and was reluctant to go. Whenever people talk about expense, I am dubious of their review. We went with our grandchildren for a "school's out" celebration, and we just don't understand the bad reviews. It was a hoot, just plain fun for the kids. Something for the kids and something for us! We had mole in the hole egg dish with sour dough and it was clever and good. My husband had the mushroom omelette that had a cute name also. The eggs came with bacon on both, I think, plus delicious roasted potatoes. Again, delicious. As for the kids!.....they were able to make their own pancakes and select the toppings and fillings of their choice. We didn't think it was high priced at all. For $6 you get 8 ounces of pancake batter, which made so many pancakes of varying sizes. Then they ordered bananas and chocolate chips. It was the right amount of toppings for them, and then they had coconut syrup and maple on top. They both loved the experience of designing the shape of their pancake. Clever idea and just plain fun! I recommend this place, not because it is the best I have ever had, but darn good for what it is!

How could you pass up the chance to take your British grandson to a make-your-own pancake restaurant when he came for Christmas from London? Hot griddle in the middle of the table, your own bottle of mix and fixin's to customize your hotcakes: what's not to love? It's a kid's dream come true, and then, when you realize that all the ingredients -- chocolate sauce, nutella, EVERYTHING -- is house-made, it dawns on you that this is a great place for the adults, too. The chocolate sauce is actually a rich ganache, the nutella is the gananche into which ground hazel nuts have been added. Suddenly, pancakes don't seem like such a bad idea! Meanwhile, others are more than a bit surprised by the superior eggs Benedicts that arrive from the kitchen. Served atop a bed of pickled slaw, both the vegetarian Benedict and the pork belly Benedict offer perfectly cooked eggs, bathed in an excellent Hollandaise sauce, all house-made. Fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee rounded out our breakfast, but if we had wanted something stronger, Slappy Cakes offers an attractive assortment of breakfast/brunch alcoholic eye-openers. Service is excellent, friendly, if taxed on weekends. Be prepared for a wait on weekends and holidays, but do not be deterred, turnover is steady and the wait is well worth it. This is a great place for kids of all ages!

Nice options for GF and vegans, as an FYI! Brother ordered the chicken fried steak, and it was delish! Breakfast burrito was quickly demolished as well, and the rest of us had fun playing with the griddle and making our own pancakes. None of them turned out as artsy and pretty as the photos we'd admired at the front of the restaurant. Midweek breakfast time, we arrived at 8, and had no problem finding street parking out front, and secured a table for 8 with no wait.

Don't get me wrong, it was a cool experience for my 11 year old daughter but the novelty wears off fast. Some of the tables are just too small for your plates, the wait was long and it gets really hot in there! I had a sweet potato hash fried with bacon, garlic and some type of green chile I cant remember, topped with 2 eggs and cheddar cheese. It was ok overall but the 3 of us spent $52+tip so for that price we will go to Pine St.

We had nine people for breakfast. We had to wait about twenty minutes as the place is very popular Slappy Cakes gives you the option to make your own pancakes at the table or to order from a kitchen menu.. It was a unique idea to me but I liked it. Three ordered from the kitchen while five of us made our own pancakes. The toppings ordered were fresh blueberries, bananas, chocolate syrup, butterscotch chocolate chip, and whipped cream. We ordered four buttermilk and 2 chocolate containers of pancake batter. i stayed with the plain buttermilk pancakes and the kids experimented with the chocolate . The buttermilk pancakes were excellent and the kids chose to make designer pancakes using both the buttermilk and chocolate batters. The kitchen made foods were very good, also. Most ingredients are locally sourced. The restaurant is small and it appears that there is always a line outside. Service is prompt and efficient. The weekday hours are 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. and the weekend hours are extended to 3 p.m. All in all it was very enjoyable. The only other U.S. based Slappy Jacks is in Maui. They can also be found in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

This place was amazing and well worth the 1 hour wait for a table. The griddles are built directly into the tables and the menu allows for creating your own special pancakes. The portions are hearty and good to take in especially when you are doing a lot of walking around the city. This is a very family friendly environment.

I know I should be writing about the pancakes but I found the bloody mary to be the best part of my experience. It was spicy, perfectly seasoned and had a slice of delicious crisp bacon it. I loved it. The pancakes were good. I'm a Mom of a 6 year old. I spent the whole breakfast telling him to keep his hands away from the hot grill. The pancakes could have been the most mouthwatering thing I every ate - I wouldn't know though. I was too stressed out that my kid was going to burn himself to enjoy the food or myself. Thank goodness for the bloody mary - brought the stress level down a bit. I'd go again w/o small kids or at least a well behaved one.

Had a great time... Even though you have to make your own pan cakes on the hot plate on your table. Excellent choice of condiments for the cakes... If you are not extremely hungry order one batter bottle. It's more than enough for about 10 pancakes.

How fun was Slappy cakes? It was very fun. They have different flavors of batter and different toppings and you just sit at your own table with the griddle and make your own pancakes. It was very fun. For people that don't want pancakes there are other menu items on the menu. All the fruit is fresh. I had bacon pancakes and my husband had strawberry. He also ordered some eggs to go with it. The price was very cheap also.

In case you aren't familiar with this restaurant, it's like the Benihana of pancakes. They provide you with batter and toppings, and you can cook your own pancakes on a griddle in the center of every table. If you can't stomach a whole 8-oz of batter, we recommend splitting a bottle of batter with someone else.

I took my husband and two sons, 14 and 7, to Slappy Cakes for breakfast on a Sunday. At 8:30 there was no line, but it got much more crowded as the morning went on. The restaurant offers make-your-own pancakes in a half dozen different batter flavors. You can also order kitchen-made breakfasts, which also sounded good. We opted for the full DIY experience. We ordered buttermilk and peanut butter batters. The toppings are a la carte for $2 each. There was enough of each topping for the four of us to share. This restaurant is great fun for the whole family. We really enjoyed the experience, and the pancakes were good, too.

We visited SlappyCakes on a Sunday morning - even though we were early, there was a 30 minute wait. The place seemed quite popular with families. Your table has a built in griddle. You order your batter and toppings off an a la carte menu (priced by ingredient) and make your own pancakes at your griddle/ table. Quite fun actually..we started using the convenient squeegee bottle the batter comes in to make all kinds off odd-shaped 'pancakes'. My husband ordered a casserole dish off the menu which was really good as well. The place was a bit pricey but service was good. I'm not giving it give stars just for the long wait (on a hungry stomach) and my perception of price/value. Definitely worth a visit for a fun experience for the entire family.

Half hour wait at noon on a Sunday didn't seem too long. We decided the wait for a table was longer then we had, so we sat at the bar. We did not get the table griddle, but had the chefs just in front of us. We had a close up show the whole time! Pancakes were delicious as well as the biscuits and gravy. We want to bring the kids back soon.

What a fun treat!! You can order off the menu or get bottles of pancake mix that you cook on your own personal griddle. Very delicious and very fun!

Great concept food was ok. Personally I'm not a fan of anywhere that I have to make my own food. They do have stuff to order from the kitchen. Chicken fried bacon sounds amazing, and would be if the piece of bacon wasn't so thin that it disappeared in the batter. I won't be back ever

It's not all about cooking pancakes at your table they also have other breakfast items that are great. Start with a Bloody Mary, then on to pork belly eggs Benedict's were great the chicken fried bacon was wonderful. We have been several times and it is always good. Expect to wait for a table even during the week well worth it.

This is such fun for kids and the pancakes smelled yum, but don't try to eat anything more "foodish" because it's inedible. So parents, eat before you go unless you plan to scarf down piles of pancakes. The steak and egg onion hash tasted like it had been cooked over a steamer. The bacon was ok. Just stick to the blast of DIY pancakes 😉

What a unique & great idea to make your own pancakes at your table! It’s a great experience with family or friends.

So I know everyone goes to Slappy Cakes to make their own pancakes (which are great and so much fun!) but we sat at the bar so ordered off the menu... I was 100% glad we did!! The French toast was some of the best I’ve ever had. Coupled with a lovely bar tender who was super chatty and made sure we always had exactly what we needed. Also the best iced coffee in Portland!

Just a terrific place. Great coffee, pancakes and friends. Cooking your own pancakes is a nice innovation. I lived in this neighborhood 35 years ago. It's changed a lot. It's still a great place to visit.

Our family including 3 grandkids from 4 years to 8 years old had the best time here. My daughter was having a ball showing off her artistic talents with these pancakes, wonderful fun and food

Loved this place, the food seemed healthy, definitely tasted great and the kids are going to want to come back. I love the part of Portland that Slapped Cakes is located in. Well worth browsing the neighborhood.

First, the service was awesome. Three adults and three teenagers were seated quickly for a Saturday brunch. Because the tables have a griddle in the middle, six at a table was close-fitting. Energy was high amongst the troops. So many slappy options for flap-jacks, it was arduous for the minions. You grill-up your jacks right at the table, and being very hungry had a hunch that I didn’t want to be waiting for the developing jacks amid the wild ones at the table; so, I ordered a toad-in-the-hole. Food delivery was speedy, satisfying and scrumptious. And, I was correct. I didn’t want to be waiting for my next bite off the griddle with so many eager hands trying to cook their creative masterpiece. If you’re looking for cheap eats, keep looking. We spent nearly $16/head, not a bargain for a pancake breakfast for six; but Slappy Cakes Portland was worth the $$ for the enjoyment and enjoyable food. We parked on the street; unsure there is other parking.

Fun breakfast spot. Everyone in our party enjoyed making pancakes. It was fun and delicious. Our server was very nice. Highly recommend.

Didn’t have to wait long since we got there just before they opened. Had a lot of fun making our own breakfast. We will be back.

You can't go wrong with the sweet potato batter, either! My waiter guy had a hat on the side of his head I don't even know how he kept it there! It is so friendly and inviting and incredibly family friendly. Getting to make my own pancakes with all the specialty batters right there on the table was so cool!

Best breakfast meal I ever had because I could make my own pancakes right at my table. Just ordered the batter and toppings I preferred and the result was YUMMY!!! I experience SC in Maui in May of 2014. They are not located all over the US but if in Oregon or Maui it is a must for breakfast or lunch. You can have the chef cook in the back but the experience was doing it myself. ENJOY!!!

Got in line before they opened and beat the crowd. Lot's of choices on the menu. Tried the buttermilk pancake batter and the sweet potato batter, both were very good. Grandkids did chocolate chips in both and they turned out great, but too sweet to eat all of it. Hot chocolate was good for them too, but the "going on 3" year old took a deep drink with his straw, only to find it too hot like in Goldilocks and became a small hotchock volcano. Grandma had the lemon curd and walnuts, which was a hit and Papa scored with chopped pecans in either batter. Fun, tasty, reasonable prices. Great place to celebrate.

Think of Benihana only with pancakes and your family members the chefs!! Each person selects batter flavor options (they even have vegan/gluten free)! There's a griddle in the middle of the table and you create fun designs, flip your creations, and enjoy the culinary productions. Try the goat cheese, bacon, and scallions.... or our vegan says to try the vegan choc-hazelnut , almonds and strawberries.... I hd the corn cakes with bacon and avocado (a menu creation) and they also have other savory menu options like egg scrambles.... all delicious! We will definitely be back the next time in Portland!!

Our party of four adults and two kids, 10 and 14, waited a well-worth it 30 minutes for a table on a Sunday morning. The kids ordered the pancakes and had fun designing and cooking and enhancing them, though realistically, they could have shared one bottle of batter and one chocolate order. We adults loved the strawberry shortcake (pancakes) and the Slappy Benedict, Avocado toast, bacon, and Classic Benedict. Great food and a cool place where you can play with your food, and it seems just right to have to step over kids coloring in the entryway. I haven't been to the ones in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, or Thailand, but I'm hoping to someday!

I took my kids here not telling them about the special type of restaurant this is. They were so surprised to learn that we get to make our own pancakes. There are so many possible combinations of toppings. We also had to try the peanut butter batter. I had slappy cakes make one peanut butter and chocolate chip pancake instead of buying a whole bottle of batter. It was so good. We could have eaten a whole bottle of the batter. We went around 1:15 which I was told is perfect timing because there's usually a wait and we didn't have any wait at all.

There were 13 of us that met for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving. We had breakfast plans with our grown children and grandchildren and I was looking for something different a more interactive experience for some of the younger kids. Slappy cakes is the spot, you have grills at your table and you buy bottles of pancake batter, there are a few varieties to choose from, in our case we got then all. The whole family got involved we had dinosaur, butterfly and flower pancakes etc.. The cost is reasonable, but the wait was about 45 min, with a very small waiting area. Over all the experience was good family

Super fun place to make your own pancakes. Be prepared to wait to get a table if you just walk in on the weekend.

We had purchased paintings from our friends, Dingo Dizmal and Olive Rootbeer, well known street clowns in Portland. Olive suggested Several places, Slappy Cakes sounded interesting so we chose to meet there. We arrived a little before eleven and there were only a few people dinning. Reviewing the restaurant it was suggested to make reservations. It wasn't necessary at that time, however while we were eating, playing with our food and conversing it filled up and a line was forming at the door. There are traditional items on the menu such as Chicken Fried Steak but the lure is making your own pancakes. There were four flavored batters to choose. Buttermilk, chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel. There were numerous sides to choose from to adorn your cakes. Strawberries, blue berries, nuts, banana, Whipped cream, ect. sides are extra. There is maple flavored syrup waiting on the tables. A grill is in the center of each table. Well it was fun making designs and shaped cakes. The only restaurant I know where you are expected to play with your food. We had fun making silly faces and objects, laughed a lot and, well just had fun! It was an enjoyable lunch with very nice people. I expect that we will eat there again. It is a 90 minute trip so it is an area we don't often visit. We plan to eat there again with our gransons. This eatery is especially great for kids and for the kid in all of us.

We have been here before and really love the place. We came back and brought my daughters friend who has a severe nut allergy. Heather waited on us, and to make sure there were no issues with the allergy, she brought out a brand new grill for the table, fresh out of the box. What great people, great service and all around top notch place. We will come back every time we come back to Portland.

My sons friend brought us here on the way to the airport. Wish we knew about it sooner. I'll be back in Portland in September to bring him to college and this will be our first stop before even checking into our hotel. Delicious pancakes. Fluffiest and tastiest I've ever had. Love the homefries and especially the loved the eggs benedict. CALL AHEAD!! There was an hour wait on a Thursday late morning so be prepared. Wait staff was excellent!!

I was traveling with my daughter touring colleges in the area, a local mentioned this place to me. So glad we had to time to go visit! Good food and cool unique experience. No line for us but we went late morning during the week.

My boyfriend and I went here for breakfast. It was my first time and wow! The atmosphere is fantastic! Our waiter was great! The food YES! I love that you can cook your own pancakes on the hot griddle at your table or you can order your cakes made in the kitchen.

I would not recommend going on a weekend! I've read other reviews where the wait is over an hour. There are too many restaurants in Portland to wait that long. Two friends ordered pancakes and two of us from the menu listings. Ours was excellent--forest mushroom omelette. I don't think our two friends got enough batter for pancakes. For kids it would be enough but I think adults would go away hungry. The cucumber Mary was great! We ordered a pitcher and there was plenty for the 4 of us! I think we all had two servings. Overall it was great except for the small batter portions.

By all standards, there are tons of fantastic breakfast places in Portland! This place is unique, it is kind of like the Korean BBQ Joint of Breakfast. We had the buttermilk and Red Velvet batters with Bacon, Bananas, Blueberries, and something else. My daughter had a blast making the pancakes into different shapes, letters, etc. The flavor was alright on the pancakes. I actually ordered the Pork Belly Benedict which was alright. There was like a 1 hour wait to get in, good thing there is a great coffee cart right next door.

You can make you own pancakes! Toppings are overpriced but each topping is shareable with two people. Very different and a must do in Portland!

Flip over having fun with your family? Love pancakes? Candied bacon? This may be the DIY restaurant for you! Tables can be hard to get. When we went, the line was out the door. Once you get your table, don't relax. You are on the clock. Note the hot griddle in the middle of your table. This is your work station. Service can take a while when it's crowded but don't get so bored that you touch the hot griddle. Instead, focus on what you will create! Slappy Cakes encourages you to Instagram your best pancake art. Next, choose your batter. Choose from regular buttermilk, vegan, chocolate, whole grain or peanut butter. It will be delivered to your table in a squeeze bottle. Now pick some add-ins for your batter including apples, chocolate chips, bananas, raisins, blueberries, mangoes and coconut. Or add savory items like bacon and sausage, chorizo sausage, ham, cheddar or white cheese, eggs, mushrooms and onions. What do you like on top of your cakes? Maple syrup may seem boring here but it is a choice. You can also top your treats with peanut butter, apple sauce, chocolate sauce, honey, lemon filling, whipped cream and cream fraiche. Now the fun begins. You squeeze your batter onto the grill and add in your fillings. Wait. Wait. Patience. When the cake starts to bubble, flip it! Finish the other side, top it and eat. Repeat until batter is exhausted. Don't want to do the work? Slappy Cakes also has plated breakfasts you can order with a side of candied bacon. There are also non-breakfast food items. The best part of ordering here is that you only need to feel guilty about the calories because the food is locally sourced ingredients. Also, Slappy Cakes emphasizes sustainable business practices and community involvement. Tip: If you are tired of cooking for your family and just want luxury service, this may not be for you. My family tried every trick including burning their cakes to get me to cook for them. It didn't work. They had to do their own flips. In the US, located in Maui, HI and Portland, OR. Also in Singapore, Japan and the Philippines.

This is a great place to take kids (and the young at heart) for DIY pancakes. We had two 8-year-olds and they had a blast making "specialty" pancakes with buttermilk and chocolate batters. There is the option to order regular breakfast, which I did as well as making myself a couple of "boring" pancakes (according to young ones). Expect to wait at least 30 minutes on a weekend morning, but there is a little food park across the street with coffee and seating.

Slappy cakes great restaurant atmosphere the service was great and the food was amazing. The best part of the experience was that you had the chance to make your own pancakes.

This is a gem in Portland. Make-your-own pancakes! Who would've thought?! Prices are reasonable, choice is great, cocktails are killer. The only downside, which is why I couldn't give 5 stars, is the ridiculous number of children everywhere. It felt like Disneyland on hipster crack. I recommend going later in the day, it cleared out a bit after a while. However, if you can't stand kids, yelling, screaming, running around (aka bad parenting), I would avoid this place.

My wife and I were looking for a gluten free place for breakfast. So glad we stumbled on this place. It was so much fun. They have griddles at the table and you make your own pancakes. The bacon was great and the toppings were tasty. We noticed looking around the place that people were actually engaged with each other and not on their phones. The children in the place all seemed to be having fun. Awesome experience.

We went with four adults and two kids--ages 8 & 10. The kids enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was worth the price tag on the batter. I wish the waiter would have told us it would feed more than it did. The kids got frustrated with the batter and I ended up making all of the pancakes. If I would have known this, I would have stayed home and spent $2 on a box of pancake mix.

He loves to make his ow. Pancakes and add his own toppings. The buttermilk batter was perfect for him. We also tried the seasonal batter lavender orange and it was wonderful. Had the veggie hash which was also fantastic.

Slappy Cakes is a lot of fun. Clever system of first choosing a batter, then a topping , and finally a syrup or embellishments. Of course the price increases as we get more creative just like we do at a frozen yogurt toppings bar. It is entertaining to cook your own creations at the table on a grill. Our server was great and kept my coffee cup full.

Love visiting this unique place! Great breakfast, brunch or lunch. We try to stop in every time we visit Portland. Hope to be back again soon!

We had a wonderful brunch here with our teens (14 & 17) who absolutely loved the whole experience. Selecting and making your own pancakes at the table is a novel idea and makes eating out an experience to remember. Definitely a high point in Portland--probably the only meal my kids will remember from our vacation! We also found the prices reasonable because we shared two orders between the four of us--they give you enough batter and mix-ins to make plenty of pancakes. As with most restaurants we went to in Portland there are a range of vegetarian and vegan options too. A great dining experience!

Great place ! Lots of menu choices , you can make your own pancakes ( literally) and great mimosa . Definitely taking my friends here when in town .

Be prepared to wait on a Sunday morning. Kids loved making pancake designs indifferent combinations. Peanut butter and butter milk batters were our favorite. Be sure to try candied bacon and breakfast potatoes. Wish Wish we Wish we had Wish we had one Wish we had one in Wish we had one in our town!

We took our extended family here and a very good time. Quick friendly service! Clean, good music, nice menu. By the end of the meal, costs add up to really customize your meal, but it's a unique concept that usual comes at a premium price.

Just not my thing! When I go out to eat I go out to be served - and although that option was available - I didn't want to choose to be the odd one out of the group. The pancakes and batter were fine and fair priced. The topping servings weren't bad - without smothering your meal- either. I personally wouldn't return but that doesn't affect my rating of the place. Fun, interesting concept with lots of pancake love and selection!

The food was so yummy, the service amazing, the atmosphere very unique and fun! Slappy Cakes completed my amazing trip to Portland!

This is a really fun place for families. They have a full menu from the kitchen but you cook your own pancakes right at your table. And their pancakes are delicious! It can get a little pricey if you order too many toppings (hard to resist), but it’s a great experience and great food. Try their potatoes - delish! Only negative - you can only put your name on the wait list in person but they will text you when you table is ready.

Took my daughter and her friends here for someone's birthday. We sat down and made our own pancakes! The food is kinda spendy for breakfast $10+ and the pancakes are just Ok, taste wise but its the fun you have making them together and being creative making heart shape or clover pancakes. It's a fun place to take friends and laugh. We ordered the strawberry and chocolate chips pancakes. Expect a wait to be seated especially Saturday's 45 min. wait.

I absolutely love that place! Now here's where things get tricky. It was my second time in Portland and our second day there. My hubby and I decided to eat out every chance we got. It was a hop and skip away from where we staying - off Hawthorne Blvd. It was a Saturday Morning and Brunch was being served, don't be intimidated if there is a line outside. Now here's my philosophy question - I stand in line, wait for about 15-20 minutes just to make my own pancakes? Nah, That's a tad ridiculous for me. So we opted for the bar seats (where there is was no wait) and our pancakes/crepes were made right in front of us. As for delectability I give Slappy Cakes and 9 out 10, the food definitely has the Portland charm and freshness with just enough grease - just the way I like it. The alternatives are also delicious and by alternatives I mean - almond or coconut milk instead of cow's milk. There is something for everybody, nut - free , dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian options. So you don't have to worry about not eating some great food and spending a whole bunch of money. Although we walked, I can tell that parking would be a problem if you drove, because there is just street side parking and that in itself is very limited because they share a building with other businesses and I saw one more right next door being built. Next time I'm in Portland, Slappy Cakes is definitely on my list to revisit.

I live in the Seattle-area but do my best to have at least one breakfast here any time I'm within 50 miles of Portland. It is a wonderfully fun place to go because you get to cook your own pancakes on a grill in front of you and put any combination of ingredients that you like in them. I highly recommend this place to everyone!

The food here is excellent! The chicken fried steak is amazing and the drinks are also fantastic! The lines on the weekends are terrible and it's not unheard of to wait about 1+hours plus the "lobby" area is very small so you usually find yourself waiting outside.

This is a fun, family restaurant. The griddles are right at the tables and booths. You can order the type of batter you want from sourdough, red velvet, gluten free, and more. They had a wide variety of extra ingredients to choose from; I loved the blueberries! The Gluten Free menu was very important to our family. One of the little ones has Celiac's Disease. It is very hard to find a restaurant that offers this choice on their menu. This was a great place to bring kids and teenagers, as well as adults.

This is a great place for anyone of any age! My party had people ranging from 3 to 40 and we all loved it! It's a place to create your own pancakes on the table! Not only do you get to build your dream pancake, you can choose between many different batters and toppings!

This great little place serves up awesome food, offers friendly service and is a ton of fun for the little ones. This is predominantly a pancake restaurant, not such big deal right? But their unique spin is that each table has it's own griddle in the middle of it so you can create your own one-of-a-kind pancakes. The place is full of family, with young and old alike. However my husband I went without kids and sat at the counter. We loved it and would go back in a minute!

Sit down and warm up the grills. Our grandson wanted to have his birthday breakfast here. We had no wait since we were there during the middle of the week. Weekends usually insure a wait. You are given buttermilk or chocolate pancake batter and you cook it on a grill. You can add chocolate chips, blueberries, pecans, bananas, strawberries to the cooked product. The teenagers decided to show their artistic talents and make different figures of the batter. They won't win any art prizes but they had fun. We, also, had sides of "loaded" potatoes, breakfast potatoes and bacon. It was a god way to start the day and fun for all.

We live just over the river in WA, and whenever we have guests come from out of town, this is one of our go to places. We've been a number of times (including just us, because, well, we like it!) and we are consistently delivered a fun experience. Slappy Cakes is everything Portland. People watching, interesting and fun food choices (including tons of healthy options too). If you don't already know, every seated person has a griddle in front of them to make their own pancakes. You pick your batter (there's a ton of them), you pick your add-ins (and, um, there a TON of those too) and your syrup. You can get crazy with shapes or just go plain old "round". Either way, it's a blast! One thing though -- this isn't the place for you if you like the "quiet upscale" feel of an eatery. It's "meet your table neighbor" fun and you'll hear the dull "roar" of plenty 'o conversation. All in all, it's an A+ experience for local and tourists alike!

This was our second time trying Slappy cakes. Not much had changed since the first time but it lost a little of the charm. We ordered the make your own pancakes with several toppings and real maple syrup. The food quality was great and the service was good. We did feel a bit rushed as it was crowded with people waiting to be seated. A great place for kids 5 to about 13. Get here early to avoid lines.

Slappy Cakes is as fun as you can make it. It's a make-your-own-pancake restaurant, and each table has a griddle built in so that you can craft something just for you. They give you options of several pancake batter flavors (one plain vegan/gluten-free one, 4 or 5 non-vegan ones), bunches of "fixins" and toppings, and multiple side options as well. We split a single tube of the vegan batter between the two of us, and we each ordered a side as well. The server told us each tube makes 4 to 5 pancakes, but that was difficult to measure for us because we exclusively made pancakes in funny shapes. The pancakes were good, but your enjoyment will come down to how much fun you have making pancakes. If you're looking for a complete, thought out breakfast experience you would be better off ordering from their pre-set menu or going to a different restaurant. I also wish there were multiple flavors of vegan batter, but you can customize the flavor plenty with the add-ons.

Came here with friends and ordered pancake mix for one with a couple of toppings as well as a skillet. Reasonably priced, good service and great food. Only downside was the queue, but got given a pager and came back later.

I took my daughter and 6 of her friends for a Sweet 16 breakfast. We couldn't make reservations, so we put our name in when we arrived and waited about 45 minutes on a busy Sunday morning. Not an unusual wait for a good breakfast place in Portland. After being seated, we were given a quick run down on how the prices works and then each person ordered some batter and toppings. I was even able to get some gluten-free batter, though you still have to share a griddle. The girls had a great time making creative pancake shapes and i enjoyed some good gluten-free pancakes. You don't have to cook your own. The menu has some nice "prepared for you" options. Overall, a fun place to have breakfast.

Super fun place. Kind staff and super good food. Makes for a fun breakfast. The teenagers loved it. We had three bottles of batter for four people and it was plenty. Great way to have breakfast

Who would believe a thriving business could be created by asking people to pay for the privilege of cooking their own pancakes? Arriving just after 9 on a Saturday morning, we found people standing in line outside waiting to get seated in the already full dining room. (Tip - just across the street is a parking lot full of food trucks, including a coffee wagon where you can get yourself a latte and wait for a text telling you your table is available). Once seated, a wait person will arrive to turn on the griddle embedded in the middle of your table. Select your batter, choose from a long list of fillings both sweet and savory and a topping or two. When your ingredients arrive, you can begin creating and cooking your pancakes. While you probably won't leaving raving that this is the most amazing breakfast you've ever eaten, you and especially you kids (or your inner child) will have fun!

My sister in-law and nieces are highly allergic to gluten so when the invited me down for breakfast, I imagined some organic, hippie place. It was a surprisingly great atmosphere with good service. The gimmick is that each table has its own grill for pancakes (which is what they specialize in) that you cook yourself. I know..."So you pay extra to cook your own breakfast?" You can order something off the grill that they prepare, which is what I did because gluten does not seem to bother me in any way but it can't be prepared on the same as grill as gluten free. Blah, blah, blah. I enjoyed watching the girls design and cook their own pancakes. Service was good and they had an overhead door that would make the entire eating area open to the street. It was a fun experience, but I'm just not in that part of town often enough to make it a regular place to eat. Too much traffic and to many parking problems. Great place to take kids that are learning to cook.

Slappy Cakes isn’t the most amazing place for a cheap place to eat, you will want to make a reservation if you can! The wait time is incredible! The price is quite high but it is such a fun experience, especially with two or more people. If you travel to Portland, you have to go here!!

Highly recommended by a friend, and now we agree that Slappy Cakes is an amazing breakfast delight. We made our own pancakes with blueberries and finished them off with peanut butter and syrup. Our waitress was prompt, pleasant, and helpful.

Always looking for food the kids will enjoy. We had a 5 and 2 yr old. Super fun for them to have the batter and ingredients to make whatever they wanted. Adults were happy there was other choices then pancakes. Coffee was great. They also have alcohol ! If the kids r bored there is a few boxes of toys to play with.

Great restaurant for families. Prices are very reasonable. Griddles built into the tables. Kids can make their own pancakes and add toppings such as fruit, chocolate chips or bacon. Expect to wait for a table. Employees very friendly and will take your cellphone number to text you when a table is ready.

The only selling point of this place is the gimmick of making your own pancakes and can be fun with kids.....otherwise who else would pay to make there own pancakes. The portions, quality and taste were absolutely horrendous and embarrassing and it surprises me how many good tripadvisor reviews there are for this place. Visiting the US from the UK and during our 3 week vacation we have tasted consistently high standard pancakes until we encountered this place. I feel absolutely fleeced as i got flimsy small portioned strawberry pancakes comprising of one chopped strawberry for $10 what a rip off.

This is such a fun place. We love drawing fun pancakes and filling them with delicious combinations- my favorite was sausage, goat cheese and honey. The service can be hit or miss- if all you order is the DIY pancakes they tend to let you, you know, do your own thing. Which is great until you need a refill. But they're always polite and in a good mood. We really love this place.

Slappy Cakes is a "make your own" pancakes restaurant. You choose the batter, the add ins from fresh fruit to dry nuts! The griddle is inlayed in the table for easy cooking. There are also many other items to choose from and eat; grits, fried potatoes, eggs, omelets and scrambles. It is really fun to share toppings, and compare grilling techniques. There are a lot of families so if you really don't want to be bothered by kids... jus think about when you go. HELPFUL HINT: Make sure the griddle is turned up hot enough and to use lots of butter. If not the pancakes take way to long to cook and they stick (because of all the fixins) This is a unique, fun restaurant that I would recommend... especially if you have kids.

So we came here specifically to make our own pancakes. The way my mum used to - small, dollar-sized or slightly larger (not crazy 10" plate-sized like you find in most restaurants). We also wanted to explore the combinations of savoury vs sweet pancakes and found the experiments enjoyable and fun. We had mushrooms and veggie links, their chocolate hazelnut spread, and bananas, along with gluten-free batter. For a die-hard buttermilk fan, I have to say that the gluten-free option was surprisingly tasty and enjoyable! Each pancake turned out perfect and by the end, we had blended the peanut butter batter with the gluten-free to see how it would turn out. It was cool! Next to us, the guests were spelling out their name with the batter. Who said you can't play with your food? Not here! Be warned - if you order pancakes from the restaurant itself, made by them, they come out VERY LARGE... Enjoyable experience, but get ready for long line-ups on the weekend. We waited 45min. :)

The concept is neat. My kids enjoyed making pancakes. We were in a group of 6. We tried the buttermilk, peanut butter and the lemon poppy seed (seasonal) batters. The buttermilk and lemon poppy seed were great. The peanut butter batter was bland at best. The lemon curd and blueberries were by far the best combination. The sides are a bit overpriced. $3 for 1 pieces of bacon. We first tried to go on a Saturday morning but found an hour wait within 30 minutes of their opening. While waiting, we walked to the waffle window and had a lovely breakfast and were finished before slappy cakes were ready for us. We cancelled slappy cakes. We went again on a weekday morning. We had no difficulty going on a Wednesday morning. Plan ahead if you want to go on a weekend. The place fills up quickly and it takes awhile for tables to turn over as everyone is making their own pancakes.

Fun experience for the family. Note: reservations are highly recommended (I didn’t know that but was lucky to score a table). It was pricey; $97 for all 4 of us but that included 3 eight ounce bottles of pancakes plus 4 toppings and 2 Classic breakfasts with extra eggs and sausage. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is service. Our waitress was friendly but she was the only server on a busy Saturday. We had to flag her down multiple times for things like napkins, refills, etc. Latte was a fail...and was also served after our food was delivered. I should’ve had them remove it from the bill but I tried to drink it. Stick to regular coffee.
Have Fun with Your Food!
We arrived at 8:30am on a Monday morning with a group of 7. We got the last table available. We sat around two of our own pancake griddles. We had a great time. We ordered a few bottles of pancake batter (including the oddly delicious blueberry basil), bacon, avocado toast, and potatoes. With the exception of the avocado toast, food was delicious! Bacon with think and crunchy. We also ordered a few toppings but didn't find them necessary. Some in our group did wish you could order sprinkles as a topping. The pancakes were excellent. We were here for the unique experience and it exceeded our expectation! We had such fun creating clever pancakes including one shaped like the banana slug we saw while hiking the day before. Arrive early for a limited wait. We parked in the neighborhood around the corner with no problem. If you think you're just paying for pancakes, it's expensive. If you think you're paying for a fun meal, it's awesome! This was a great time. Don't miss out!
