Charming setting, mediocre food

By judygecko |

While the menu sound fantastic the food is just ok. The wine list is very good. The service was not up to par. Haven't been there in a while and it will be a while till I go back.

Horrible! Raw inedible pork, slow unpleasant service, rude manager, overpriced and overall terrible experience

By Geoff T |

A terrible experience! We came for a pre concert dinner tonight The service was horribly slow and inattentive. It took a long time to order. The delay for our meal was very long. They completely forgot to bring the first course we ordered and never apologized or offered an alternative other than taking it off our bill. Then, the “ special “ pork arrived after a very long wait. The pork was raw and cold on the inside. It took a long time to get our servers attention. When I pointed out the cold reddish center of my pork it led to another long delay until a manager came and without an apology or suggestion of what we could eat, went for a discussion, and then announced they would take the pork off our bill as if she was doing us a huge favor. We had another delay getting our very expensive bill and then had to walk up and track them down to pay. We left after an hour and a half very hungry. The worst was not the raw inedible pork or failure to serve our appetizer, it was the attitude and overall unpleasant experience with no effort to help. I would avoid this overpriced restaurant with horrible service!

Comfortable and reliable

By Edward W |

One got the impression this establishment knows how to do what they do. Nothing exceptional but steady as she goes food and service. I'd go back and can recommend but not for a night to impress visitors. Food was fine and service friendly but not exceptional (as stated). No cocktails here either just wine and beer.

Secret Spot

By frqentravlr |

This delightful Italian restaurant is tucked into a small alley in Presidio Heights. We were met by a charming hostess who remembered our name as soon as we entered. It was a mild evening and we sat outside and enjoyed three delicious meals: the pork chop, sea bass and the chicken pot pie. All were excellent which we accompanied with a tasty Nebbiolo from a excellent list. The service was excellent and attentive. Very "untouristy" which we appreciated as we were visiting family and friends. Looking forward to a repeat visit!

Classic Nieghborhood Italian Restaurant

By Tom P |

This is your classic neighborhood restaurant...... Italian. Small quaint and in a great neighborhood. We sat at the bar cause we were walk-ins the place filled up rapidly. We had the special of the night Pork Shank over polenta with Marsala mushroom sauce. It was done perfectly and large enough for both of us to share. We had the bartender pick our wine from a large by the glass selection of Italian wines. The menu is great and well balanced and the food is spot on in execution and presentation. I would go back with no hesitation.

Havent been in quite awhile as it's a bit of a journey from Texas, but we go there whenever we're in San Francisco.

One of our favorite "hits" in the area! Only been there 3-4 times, but look forward to going again and again...and again! Excellent food and service in all the times we've been.

Lovely lunch

By Rose T |

My dear girlfriend treated me to her go to weekly lunch spot at Sociale. From the moment we walked in all safety precautions were taken in a very polite manner. David the owner greeted us and waited to bring us to our seats until it was completely ready as to not invade anyone else’s personal staff. The food was excellent. Maybe one of the best Caesar salads I have had at a restaurant. The pasta and risotto were excellent and not overcooked. Our server Angelo and busser Sabastian were very courteous and patient. Stephanie the manager checked on us as we were wrapping up our meal. I will be back for sure. It’s a little piece of hidden heaven in Presidio Hgts.

excellent food, service, and atmosphere

By PhilipLay |

Sociale is a neighborhood gem. Have been there 5-6 times before with my wife and always enjoyed it. Last night the food was particicularly good - three appetizers and the pappardelle + duck and cornish game hen were well prepared and expremely tasty too. Wine staff were also very helpful in guiding us to a delicious italian wine (Le Berne).

Great atmosphere

By DAC3 |

We walked down a narrow walkway from the street and magically there were some outdoor tables under an awning and then a wonderful indoor space as well. We ate outside and had light rain to accompany the soft chatter of the other customers. We split 3 hors d'oeuvres including fried olives and young mozzarella My dinner was delicious duck on pasta with a fantastic sauce. The wine list was great and the service prompt. We will be back

Very special, high end

By Tom P |

We ate here with a dinner party following a wedding. Our group had a private room, with a menu of specially selected appetizers, entrees and desserts. The meal included champagne, and wines. We had at least three attendants, who were very busy keeping glasses filled and serving the food. The food was very tasty and nicely presented. This is a great place to celebrate that very special occasion. If you are the host, suggest you be prepared for "sticker shock".

Amazing, neighborhood restaurant

By losgatos95030 |

We have dined at Sociale twice. Both dinners have been memorable. There is an outside patio and inside area. The waiters are very helpful in pairing wines with dinner and assisting their guests in making dining decisions. The wine steward is extremely knowledgeable, so use him! Portions are modest. Food is presented beautifully.

Quiet romantic neighborhood restaurant with good to excellent food

By mdgwind |

I went to recently on a date and found it to be overall quite good. The Perotto appetizer was good but not excellent. I thought they serve much better Barada at Resto bar in the Marina district on Chestnut Street. My talk entrée was very flavorful and weld prepared. My datesFish was excellent. The desserts were good but but nothing extraordinary.. I think this is a good place for a couples for a nice romantic evening out. It's Tucktaway in a little alley right off Sacramento Street which makes it even more romantic.

True Romance

By kwine |

This restaurant is one of the hidden jewels of San Francisco. My wife and I have been coming here for our anniversary for 10+ years, and everytime we do, we are reminded of how great it is. If you are looking for a romantic place, this is it.

Really a 4.5

By trvlquestions |

We were celebrating our anniversary, and they started us off with complimentary glasses of champagne. Our dinner was very enjoyable. We have eaten here a couple of other times, and sometimes it can be a little noisy. However, they have added another dining room, and it was much quieter – which we appreciated. For our first course, we shared the Seared Scallops and the Burrata. The scallops were delicious; the only complaint I would have about the Burrata was the squash blossoms were coated and fried. It would be helpful if restaurants would indicate when an item is fried. For our main course, we both had pasta, which we also shared. Sweet Corn Tagliatelle was light and very flavorful – delicious; I had wished I wasn’t sharing it! The Artichoke Gnocchi was very good, too, but a little monotonous. There was a little bit of garnish, but I’m not even sure what it was – just bits of something small and crispy. It needed something – a sauce or some vegetables, for example. They sear the outside of the gnocchi, which was nice, and it would be a good dish to share as an appetizer for two or three people. The Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake was delicious, but you wouldn’t know the fruit was rhubarb if it hadn’t said so on the menu. The cinnamon ice cream was great; it tasted like those cinnamon candies – really cinnamon-y but not spicy. Our waitperson and the receptionist were friendly and helpful. The only service issue was the person clearing the dishes tried to clear our main course plates a few times before we were finished. The atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable and contributed to a great celebration. I’m looking forward to returning and having the Sweet Corn Tagliatelle again.

Excellent cuisine and wine list

By travelculture123 |

Solid Italian cuisine. Quiet patio. Pappardelle with duck ragu was superb. Pasta with morels could have been better. In-depth Italian wine list from expert sommelier. Deep knowledge of Piedmont. Would return.

First, you have to find it...

By Alan B |

This restaurant is a bit of adventure to get to. You have to go through a narrow alley between buildings and then find yourself in a pretty courtyard, and there it is with both an outside seating area (with gas fired heaters when needed) and two inside dining rooms. The waitstaff is very accommodating. We mostly had the specials, and frankly, they were very good, but not great. I found them a bit pricey for what was delivered. As one of our party said, the location is a very San Francisco experience.

Luscious Food; Eat Outdoors

By Nina S |

Outstanding flavors in everything the table ordered. Jim the wine guy was very helpful. Inside vibe was pedestrian. I would highly recommend, but opt for a table in the charming garden patio.

Always my favorite - new menu!

By Keith K |

I love this restaurant and have been turning friends and family on to it for years! Every time they take away my duck, they soon bring it back! The fried olives are another old favorite which are the only olives I’ll eat!! But they have a lot of new delicious starters and mains and their wine list is always brilliant! Very nice place in a secluded courtyard with outdoor dining as well as comfortable seating inside, but true to SF, not pretentious! I will always come back!

Great Hidden Gem

By Mbronkar |

Tucked away down a little alley, wonderful white tablecloth restaurant. Delicious food, varied menu. Opted for lunch and Selected smoked duck soup and duck parpadelle. Even though they were both duck, the flavors were different. Delicious. Husband had Caesar salad and pico bolognese, wonderful. We shared a half bottle of Chianti. Excellent service. Dessert lovely.

Mediocre Chef ~ too much money!

By Gracie A |

My husband and I are 'foodies' ~ this being said, the food at Sociale was bleh... First, we ordered the Heirloom Tomato Salad $13: the tomatoes were slightly overripe/mushy. Next, we had their special pasta dish, Papparedlle w/Braised Duck $21 (recommended by our server who said this dish is 'very popular with our patrons'). Our server told us that this dish is prepared with truffle oil and garlic: The flavor was sour, and there was barely a hint of garlic (yuk). For the main course we ordered Grilled King Salmon $27: It was a VERY small piece of fish (I was truly surprised). Apart from that, the fish was hardly seasoned/very bland and slightly overcooked. Dessert was equally unsatisfying. Sometimes a restaurant has an off night, but it is apparent that this chef does not understand how to season food, so I would say any night would deliver the same experience.

Charming place

By Edouard T |

From the street, you walk down an alleyway and find a patio part of the restaurant. Charming place, italianish ! The menu is limited, but dishes are delicious. Outside, in the patio, the sound level is ok. I did not use the restroom. The wine list is composed of little known wines, poor quality, but proposed at outrageous high prices. More and more restaurants in SF are rising beverages prices to raise profit. That plus forced 20% or more service, plus health care tax, plus, plus, plus.

Good But Not Great!

By Marty_Darte |

I had the watermelon and cheese appetizer (with chili peppers) which I thought was excellent. Then, for pasta, I had the pappardelle and duck (a specialty of the house), which was good, but for my taste, not great. (I would have liked more noodles in it.) Finally, I had the roast Petrale sole (a favorite fish of mine) and found the fish and sauce lacking in flavor. The wines the wait staff helped us choose were excellent choices. In sum, it was an enjoyable meal, but I would have prepared the dishes a bit differently.

Good food, service and fairly priced wine

By Louis D |

You will love the atmosphere. It is comfortable, upscale with inside and out dining. Lots of heaters for cool evenings. Food is very good, served professionally with the sommelier Josh offering wine suggestions that meet your taste and budget. I had Italian fish stew prepared perfectly with a light tomato sauce that did not over power. My wife enjoyed the pasta cooked al dente.

Love, love, love. Great restaurant!

By MendoPOM |

Always good food, great service and wonderful ambiance. I've been a few times and every single time I can be assured of an excellent time. The service goes above and beyond --recommendations are always good. Nice hidden spot on Sacramento Street.

Great meal

By Michael B |

Sociale is a wonderful experience. A lovely room with great people, food and wines. But it is the people that work there that make it extra special. We loved it.

Delightful outdoor dining

By Kris132 |

Charming patio dining off the beaten track in Laurel Heights. Yummy Italian food, be sure to make a reservation.

Down an Alley Down the Drain

By SrTravelerTampa |

The spouse had been here before and thought it charming. My first reservation came when I was told it was 'down an alley'. Indeed it was, and in limited space. Tables were crowded so close together you could not help but hear you neighbors conversations. The noise was unimaginable. Finally seated we eventually got a waiter and menus, and then they disappeared. Upon their return we placed a wine order and strained our ears to hear what the specials were that evening. First came the wine and our water. They left again to come back in a few minutes to take our order. We ordered and awaited our food anticipating a culinary treat. Our anticipations went down the drain as the food was sub-par and over priced. San Francisco has too many good places to eat without wasting time, money and possible damage to your ears to dine here. It is a novelty to some to sit cheek to jowl with strangers and walk down an alley to get there for some people but I go out to eat for (1) Good food prepared and served right at a reasonable price (2) Good conversation with others at our table (3) and making a fond memory to return to in the future. This isn't the place for any of that. Sorry.

Meh... On the one visit list

By TiJah |

I chose this restaurant based on it's popularity amoung the cole valley neighborhood facebook page. Over all, mostly disappointing. We we're sat practically in the kitchen where NO other patrons were seated. We enjoyed all of the 'music' coming out of then kitchen including a dropped bin of flatware. Crammed against the wall, mostly forgotten by staff. Very pleased with the choice of wine and the good council of the som. Pasta was very good. - Duck confit! The fried olives were ok. Then fried polenta had a 'fair food' je ne sais quois. The bathroom was unpleasant with a curtain separating it from diners. Remodel deparately needed to make it pleasant.

Mixed Review

By jacki1950 |

I was taken to this restaurant by locals on a visit to the Bay Area. It knocked my socks off when we walked to the end of a tiny alley off the street and arrived at an Italian street scene. Sitting in the heated patio area felt warm and inviting despite the March chill of the evening. The ambiance, and wait staff were delightful. I could not wait to order from the interesting menu. Here is where the mixed review comes in...it may have been my choices, but I did not enjoy the majority of the food. I loved the polenta fries. Very different and light despite being fried. The squash gnocchi was dry and tastless. The noodles with duck, which is a specialty of the house were dry and dissapointing. Goat cheese cheescake was light and okay, but not spectacular. The espresso was on the cool side. Several of my table mates agreed with me. . A restaurant this expensive and beautiful should not serve mediocre food. I hope we just hit an off night.

Nice atmosphere

By Kat0425 |

We had a very nice dinner here. Atmosphere was nice and could be a good spot for a romantic dinner or a business meal. No dress code- seems to be a mix of jeans and suits. Service was excellent, really could not be better. There were many interesting options on the menu. Food was very good.

By MikeBirdman |

The perfect hidden dining experience

By Candiece2015 |

Right up front I have to admit I'm biased - I adore everything about Sociale. I love that it is discreetly tucked at the end of a little walkway that takes you by a flower store. I enjoy that Sociale has an outdoor patio, a banquet room for larger groups, and a very sweet cafe-style indoor dining option where I normally eat. It is a welcoming decor with comfortable banquets and chairs. From the moment you are greeted by the host/hostess to the wait service, you know you are in for a treat that is fulfilled by exquisitely prepared food. I actually learned to love kale here, which I've never liked! The menu is creative and always changing that includes some choices that regular diners enjoy and anticipate. Portions are appropriate and desserts are excellent . In the height of the lunchtime crowd it can be a bit noisy, but it is so worth it. I always leave feeling like I temporarily left San Francisco for some European city, completely refreshed by a genuinely delightful dining experience.

The Best Italian in the Bay Area

By David K |

Sociale just gets better and better. I always feel like I have been transported to a European village when i walk down the pathway and through the dining patio and then always welcomed by the friendly staff for a return experience. This time with the experienced help from Master Som Jim, my partner and I were just blown away by the wonderful wine paring and incredible cuisine. We started with a wonderful white and the grapefruit and baratta flown in from Polio weekly that was such a treat. Then we moved on to the pastas that were spectacular. We were lucky enough to be there the night they were serving an rabbit tagliatelle bolognese and a gnocchi which was just divine, not starchy of pasty at all. And the branzino was so moist and flavorful and served so beautifully it was just wonderful. And the deserts are better than Italy and Jim is always there to suggest the perfect Port or Amaro. The entire staff start to finish are so professional and friendly you feel like a part of the Sociale family by the time you must sadly leave and already looking forward to your next visit!

Upscale neighborhood dining!

By NancySF |

You find Sociale down a little alley on Sacramento Street and if you didn't know about it you would not find it! We had reservations on a Friday night and were seated immediately upon entering the restaurant. Service was friendly and prompt. The menu is not large. This is not a great place for children, and we did not see any there. We ordered the rib eye which was excellent, and a petrale stuffed with rock fish which was ok, but not great. All I tasted was the shrimp. The portion was small comparatively. We may go back, but there are so many great restaurants in San Francisco I think we need to keep trying them. Also, parking on Sacramento Street can be rather tough.

Left hungry

By Nina5136 |

The dishes are visually artistic, yet practically sparse for those who are actually hungry for a meal. Additionally, the bathrooms are a clear afterthought with little privacy.

Great fine dining in a beautiful setting

By Judith A |

Friends took us here for a mid week dinner as we visited SF. We so enjoyed the lovely ambience of this eating establishment. So many exquisite items on the menu it's difficult to select. Well everyone picked tasty options that fully satisfied. Gorgeous presentation, attentive service and do I s, completely ready to return asap. Elegant, tasteful, delicious, welcome. What more could you want.

Hidden gem at Laurel Heights

By Californian09 |

Excellent restaurant with great menu, impressive wine list, and great staff. The reason to visit was 90th and 85th birthdays, and the place was the best. Party room enough for 15 people with glass wall makes you comfortable, giving you your own space, and also feeling that it's quite big at the same time. Thanks to the chef, Julio Mis, and restaurant crew, the menu is well thought, balanced, and all dishes are well presented. Fried olives is a great appetizer, crunchy outside and soft inside, and mixed flavors. Pasta we ordered, certainly was one of the best I ate. Pappardelle with pulled duck and porcini mushrooms was rich, full of duck flavor (similar to duck confit) and well pronounced taste of porcini, served with young peas which added slightly crunchy texture and fresh aftertaste. Shirt ribs cooked to perfection, dark brown and juicy, easily pulled with a fork, tender and well structured at the same time, served on the bed of slightly cooked "crumbs" of cauliflower, and meat jus. Per guests who ordered stillhead trout, fish was tender, with well pronounced flavor, served with thick sauce and green and yellow string beans which is perfect side. Orange panna cotta is also great choice as a dessert, smooth and flavorful. Thank you very much for excellent time we spent, and special thanks to waiters team who helped us during our dinner

Chaotic

By Patti S |

We had heard great things about this restaurant but came away very disappointed. The food was terrific, but the overall experience was uncomfortable. We had a table for two along the wall and it was impossible to carry on a conversation. Not only was it noisy, but the waitress (who was extremely friendly) had to attend to the two tables on either side of us and her backside was too close for comfort. We will try again, because as I say the food was wonderful, but we will definitely ask for seating outside.

The Best Italian Restaurant in the Bay Area!

By David K |

Return visit to Sociale and it was a wonderful experience as before. This time we sat inside which was just as nice as their beautiful patio equally intimate. The signature fried olives are a novel and great way to settle in. The seared scallops were prepared perfectly with an interesting pea puree which complemented rather than overwhelmed and the Hiramasa crudo was so fresh and flavorful. Then we shared the wild mushroom risotto and cavatelli Bolognese which was out of this world. Each of these courses was paired by World Class Som, Jim Kennedy. His knowledge of wine is so impressive as he guided us through the menu and wine list. We have never experienced a meal that was so expertly paired! And we were so lucky we saved room for the absolute best veal chop ever. We also shared this huge chop which again exceeds expectations. And be sure to leave room for the olive oil cake and blood orange panna cotta. David and his crew run a first class operation which is definitely our favorite Italian in the Bay Area!

One of our favorite restaurants in San Francisco

By Susan S |

Love everything about Sociale! Easy parking (in Presidio Heights), absolutely delicious food, friendly and attentive staff, delightful setting with an outdoor courtyard (complete with the requisite heat lamps). All in all couldn't be beat!

One of the Best in San Francisco!

By David K |

Spectacular meal here last night. Enjoyed sitting outside in the patio under heaters and everything was perfect. Our waiter Mathew made some incredible recommendations. We loved the pastas. Each was fresh and served aldente. The duck pasta with truffle oil and the fennel sausage with green peppers pasta were amazing. The fried green olives are a real innovative treat and the secondis are not to be missed. We actually split the pork chop which was perfectly cooked .. moist and juicy and fantastic. Each of our courses was paired by Jim our incredibly knowledgeable Som. He went over and above explaining each wine and why he selected. Started with a wonderful proseco right through to the madera at the end with the chocolate olive cake. We only wish we had more room to try the game hen and other pastas. This is what dining is all about!

Spectacular Italian Gem!

By David K |

When you walk down the ramp to this hidden gem you are instantly transported to an intimate trattoria in Italy which is exceptional in every way. We started with the fried olives and the creamiest and freshly made burrata. And be sure to ask Jim Kennedy the learned Sommelier to make wine suggestions along the way which are always spot on and perfectly paired. He took time out to explain each wine recommendation in detail which adds another element to the perfect meal. Jim and our waiter Matt, recommended we try the duck Pappardelle and Pork pastas which came out of the kitchen hot and al dente and were the best this side of Italy. And we were equally impressed with the secondi recommendations which included the beef stew and game hen. We shared all the dishes which was a great way to broaden our dining experience. Our only regret was that we were to filled to try the desert wines which I know would have been paired with sweet offerings at the end. Now we have something to look forward to when we return!

Our favorite San Francisco Restaurant!!

By Bucksguy |

This is a must stop for us whenever we are in the city visiting friends. It's a cute restaurant tucked off the street in a nice neighborhood. The aspargus salad and the lamb meatballs were fantastic!! My friend always orders the duck ragu pappardelle which is a staple on the menu. The service is very friendly and approachable! I will continue dining here anytime I am in the city!!

Little Secret

By Madelene Z |

This is Truly San Francisco's darling little secret. A friend and I decided to have foodie adventure and stumbled upon this beautiful area on Sacramento. It's a small restaurant behind a cute shopping area on Sacramento st. I tried and Cornish and whatever my friend ordered was tasty. It's a bit on the pricey side but I would return.

Great Pasta

By Engbandh |

Carrot soup for starter a bit bland. Pasta main was tasty and pasta perfectly cooked. Service was good and they were keen to help guide on wine.

Oh So Lovely

By glqw57 |

It is quite an adventure to get to. One must go thru a narrow alley way ending up in a beautiful manicured courtyard. One has the option to eat either in the courtyard or in the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is small and intimate. We arrived at the restaurant early, therefore the service was outstanding. As for the food, we had a white bean crostino and it was delicious, however a very small portion. For dinner, stuffed petrale sole…a bit fishy tasting and too much salt. The dessert, chocolate oblivion cake, very rich and fudgy.

A little gem with large flavors

By Ron V |

This restaurant is a standout among the many fine places that define the San Francisco dining scene. It's delight to walk down the alley gangway bordered by a small flower shop and gallery before entering. We were seated outside which is cozy and romantic amongst the twinkling lights. The service was attentive and the sommelier an expert guide through the extensive wine list. In our party we had the Halibut, Picci Bolognese, Game hen and Wagya Steak which is pretty indicative of the choices on the menu. All were very ,very good. The standout deserts are not to be missed with a shoutout to the Chocolate Oblivion Cake ( very dense!) and the Seven Layer Ice Cream Cake. Since there are so many quality restaurants in SF it's always a delight to discover a gem you can call your own from the very first time.

Quiet, out of the way, designer-food

By AKdancer49 |

Be sure of your directions so you can find Sociale. It was not busy when we came so it was quiet. The menu has interesting items - tried artichoke tortellini and although the server gave a description of it I did not expect what was served: wide green pasta strips folded into cute shapes. Not like any tortellini I've had - in Italy or otherwise. So glad I shared this since I did not care for the sauce. I can recommend the pot pie - whole wheat crust, nice sauce. Best thing I tasted there. The serving sizes are small - when I saw the "tortellini", a full-size order, I wondered what a half portion would look like. (The pasta items are available in half portions.) The wine list was good, and one of my friends found an interesting imported beer. The menu describe a "little gem" salad as to its toppings, but no mention of the greens involved. It was romaine - but would you know from the menu? Overall not a place I'd rush to go again. Server was attentive and helpful, but split what we didn't want split and vice-versa.

Fun, out of the way, great food and service

By Rick T |

We met some good friends there for dinner. They had to explain that it was at the end of a short alley off the street, and not so obvious to find... but it was worth it. Quiet atmosphere, prompt/courteous service; ever-present but not intrusive. We were able to enjoy our meal without feeling rushed. The food was innovative and very well prepared. Everyone's meal was special and outstanding. Prepared properly and very tastefully. A real find!!!

Hidden Gem

By Joe D |

A local recommended this restaurant to us during a trip to San Francisco. I'm so glad we found this place. It's tucked away down an alley outside the normal tourist areas, so it's a little hard to find, but it's worth the effort. Our meal was fantastic and the sommelier was a big help in selecting an excellent wine at a decent price that matched perfectly with our meals. We finished things off with a rhubarb upside down cake topped with cinnamon gelato. Perfect!! We will definitely go back the next time we're in San Francisco.

Noisy, crowded and lots of pork

By EsmeBennion |

The tables are very close together and it is really noisy, so not good for a conversation. Deep Fried olives are too salty. Good veggie options but mostly meat entrees. Pico bolognaise very flavorful (order a half portion and add a side veg). brussels and baby kale was great but crumbly and difficult to eat.

Lots of good cheer and food at Sociale

By Marjorie Y |

It is always fun to enter this bustling restaurant via a tiny alley off of Sacramento. Overall the food is good but not outstanding. We shared a green salad with fried olives stuffed with cheese. They are fun to eat . My squash gnocchi was delicious as was my husband's pork dish. We each had a decent glass of Cabernet Franc from the North Coast. The tables are quite close so eavesdropping is easy to do and a quiet, intimate conversation not so much. The service is good although on both times I have been there, I felt rushed. It seems to me that the menu has not changed much over the years. I understand that lunch time is much quieter and I may try that next time.

Meatloaf!

By BenjiBusinessDog |

Meatloaf! Isn’t that enough? Wait, there’s more. Meatloaf with spicy BBQ sauce, mashed cauliflower “risotto” and sautéed spinach. It’s a special, so don’t expect it every night. Speaking of specials: white bean crostino with arugula salad. If you happen to land on a night when both are being served, count your blessings and enjoy. 😋

Tucked away little find

By AniaKx2 |

Lovely spot, hidden in an urban garden. Food was very tasty, but not especially memorable. Some interesting items on the menu not found elsewhere which were tantalizing.

Decent

By DLX812 |

Sometimes good food, you never know what to really expect. Wish they would keep a few good classics on the menu.

Hidden neighborhood Gem!

By SkysMommy4 |

Our friends recommend we try out Sociale. I am very picky with my food & Sociale didn’t disappoint. We started with the homemade meatballs which I would normally never try & they were absolutly homemade fantastic covered in delicious gravy. I had the amazing short ribs over risotto, yum! My son scarfed down the linguini and clams. Don’t miss this restaurant. ;)

Great food distracted staff

By Ramblingagain |

We ate at Sociale on Valentine's night. The four course set menu was extremely good and the food was prepared perfectly. Two things made the evening less than perfect and I'm willing to cut the staff a break because it was a very busy evening. 1. Our waitress got several of the orders wrong during the course of the meal. It could have been the noise, but after a couple of misses it detracted from dinner. 2. The four course menu came with a nice set of wine pairings. However, once the menu was taken from the table you would have never guessed what was being poured. The wine steward would briskly come to the table, mumble something about the wine, pour and disappear. I have had waitresses at a diner take more care in pouring my morning coffee then the staff did with the wine at Sociale. Since the food was very good I will give it another try and hope for a better overall experience.

Hidden Gem for Anniversary Dinner

By Matt C |

My girlfriend and I went here for an anniversary dinner. I had found via opentable, and it was excellent. The restaurant is somewhat hidden off the street; you walk down a hall into a patio area before entering. The wine was great, the food was great, and the service was, for the most part, attentive without being overbearing. We went with only one entree (grilled Neiman Ranch skirt steak), but three small plates: chicken speidini, ravioli, and fettucine (I think--the menu changes frequently, so I'm not sure if it's still the same online). I would absolutely go here again. We had an early dinner (6.15 p.m.) on a Sunday, and the place really filled up later in the evening. The one drawback was that we were seated next to what ended up being a busy hallway: on the way to the bathroom and next to a very, very noisy group. We had trouble hearing ourselves talk.

Subtle Flavor Combinations, Healthy Wine List

By Bird_and_Food_Lover |

One of the best meals I've had in a restaurant. Classic Italian, 3 courses. Every dish contained a wonderfully subtle combination of flavors that all came together to produce an truly stimulating culinary experience. Sommelier matched our wine perfectly. Don't miss this gem.

Not as good as they think

By FmartiRidgway |

We had lunch today at Sociale. A haughty host did little to make us feel welcome. Okay decor, good service, music too loud (why do restaurants think they have to entertain!). The food was okay/good, nothing special. An extensive wine list, but so outrageously expensive we ordered beer. I'm sure there are better dining experiences in SF for the same, or less money. Chez Maman is one. FM

Sociale gives off the best of impressions right off the bat when you walk down an adorable alley to get to it. You're also able to enjoy a beautiful outdoor seating area because they have really good heaters that keep you warm. The wait staff and sommelier are very knowledge and we had the best wine and dinner. No wonder this place is Michelin star rated. It was one of the best dinners I've ever had. The seafood spaghetti was to die for. I definitely recommend for a special occasion.

Don't be fooled by the positive reviews, if you enjoy good food, don't go here

By MaryB8893 |

First of all let me start by saying, I very rarely write a negative review about anything, but this truly is a public service announcement. I don't want anyone to be tricked into believing that this place serves good Italian food. In fact, I have traveled to Italy every year as a child and I can assure you this is nothing like Italian food. The combinations are unusual and lack flavor of any sort. Italian food is created with much care and thought of how foods blend and work together!!! I ordered the eggplant parmesan and when it arrived I was shocked to see the eggplant was sliced so thick and had not been drained of extra water and seasoned with salt. It was hard to cut into , and tasteless. Eggplant parmesan is typically done with several layers of thinly sliced eggplant that should cut easily and melt in your mouth like butter. The sauce was perhaps a step above a canned sauce you could pick up in the supermarket. I took a bite and ate the mushrooms around the eggplant. Very disappointing as this place is highly rated on Yelp and Trip Advisor. My husband ordered the braised beef and also left 3/4 of his meal because it too, lacked any sort of flavor. The waiter came over and asked us if there was anything wrong, what could we say? His inquiry was almost robotic and we really did not feel he was interested in hearing what we had to say. I have a feeling he has a lot of people that leave their uneaten food and he really does not want to hear it. I also felt like there wasn't anything this poor guy could do about it anyway, he can't teach the chef to cook and I would not want to sample anything else on that menu. 2 out of 2 meals gone wrong, not great odds of getting a flavorful meal. Now let's talk about the atmosphere, the entry into the restaurant is amazingly romantic as it is through gates and down an alleyway that leads to the outdoor dining area which is stunning. It was too cold for us to sit outside so we opted to sit indoors. The restaurant is tiny so if you want a romantic setting, you are not getting it here as you are packed closely to other patrons. It is an L shaped design that reminds me of The Cheesecake Factory. In addition to this, there is a truly awkward bathroom situation. The bathroom is located right near the front reception area and you need to go through a tapestry drape in order to reach the bathroom. Once you are in there you can lock the door, but there is a sink and behind another tapestry curtain is the toilet. Gross!!! How often is that curtain cleaned?? It is not only strange in appearance, but also kind of disgusting as well. Well, there you have it, the honest truth, buyer beware!!!

A real gem!

By WDWDolphinFan |

We loved our dinner here! We dined outside in the small courtyard, which was charming and quite comfortable even on a cool night. The heirloom tomato appetizer was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the corn tortellini. My husband ordered one of the pasta specials, and although it did not sound like something I would like, I tried a taste and thought it was wonderful, too! Considering both food and atmosphere, this was our favorite dinner in San Francisco this trip (easily beating 2 Michelin-starred restaurants), and one we hope to repeat.

Delicious dinner

By judy5088 |

Took my daughter and SIL for dinner, we all ordered different entrees and shared a salad and pasta. The steak was cooked to perfection. Chicken was a tad dry and quail was nice. All came with interesting and different sides. Wine list is good and service was on target. Good place for a small intimate dinner.

Great little restaurant in SF

By PixelPrincess_2011 |

I shot a wedding reception at this restaurant and wow what a treat. As other reviewers have noted, it's hidden away down a little alley and it opens up to a nice patio. The food was delicious. The noodles in my pappardelle took me back to mom's noodles when I was a kid! The biggest impression on me was the service. The waiters were professional and personable, but they weren't intrusive.

Ticks all boxes

By Aoife_in_HK |

without coming off too dramatic...this was one of the best dining experiences i have ever had... We were referred to Sociale by a colleague who said it was a must-try restaurant in SF. We arrived, expecting it to be slightly pretentious - couldnt be farther from the truth. It was a cosy set up - quite chilled. could get away with wearing jeans and a nice top. The food was incredible - the waiters, extremely helpful and friendly and the sommelier was one of the best we've ever encountered. He really knew his stuff and was so helpful with advice on where to go with the rest of our trip down coastal california. We took all of this recommendation on board. The value for money was really the clincher. the entire meal - starters, pasta dish, entrees, dessert and a number of wines - came to ~$120 each. simply put - amazing.

Unusual location, quite pricey

By JR115 |

This is an unusual location. Really. From the sidewalk at the street, one must pass between buildings to the area of the restaurant which was two noisy rooms and an outside seating area. Some might think this quaint, others are left to wonder. The food was good, but pricey. The wine selection is outstanding and pricey as well. Our group of six really enjoyed the kale salad, the sea bass and the egg plant parmesan. Other dishes were fine, but not memorable. Service was good given a full restaurant. With so many places to eat in SFO, I wonder why this place is so popular.

Superb!

By ZanyOmahaGirl |

Oh, my, how wonderful this restaurant is! We went with a group of 7, enjoyed amazing service and even better food. Make a reservation...settle in and enjoy the ride. EVERY single dish is amazing.

Not impressed

By betsy1224 |

I went to dinner here with good friends who live in San Francisco. They go to Sociale pretty regularly as it’s close to their home. I ordered the beet salad, which was attractive but totally tasteless. As the tuna tartare appetizer interested me more than the meal options, I had that as my main course. It was fresh and plated beautifully but lacked a distinctive taste. I tried my friend’s shellfish stew, and as the sauce was beautifully seasoned, I asked for bread to sop up the flavor. Rather than bread, they serve little biscuits, which seemed to be under baked. Our group of three shared the polenta fries, which were good but I’ve had better elsewhere. This restaurant can be difficult to find as it’s set back from the street in a little courtyard area.

Neighborhood Secret

By Alexis331 |

Here is what I like about Sociale: + It is a great place to lunch after going to the nearby Legion of Honor Museum. + Sociale is hidden off the street so you better know where you are going. + The food is good. + There is a patio (there are heaters so nice even on a cool day) and a pleasantly decorated dining room. Here is what I don't like about Sociale...parking is painful in this area so make sure you allow extra time to get there. It's worth it.

Good Italian Dinner

By Max v |

I went here with a friend of my on a Friday evening. We were seated in the patio I nice place outside. Because of the heaters it was comfortable to sit here. Only with the wind sometimes it was a little chilly. We ate a 3 course menu what was good. Nice variety in the courses. Our first wine (sauvignon blanc) was a bit disappointing, expect a better wine for $14,- very flat taste. The red wine from the chianti was a good paring with the bavette steak. Server was very friendly and attentive.

Neighborhood place, but with downtown food

By Jeff Z |

Down a narrow alley, a small room that's cozy and friendly. Staff was great: very friendly, eager to talk about the food and make recommendations. Food was delicious. Can't go wrong.

Italian hideaway

By poz59 |

There is valet parking across the street. Walk down the alley to the restaurant. Tables are a bit close together and the room a bit loud, but the staff is pleasant and the feel is homey. Fried olives are a specialty appetizer. They were interesting. If you like green olives they would probably be great, but after a couple that was enough for me. Burata Mozzarella starter was excellent. Papardelle with Braised Duck was an excellent pasta. The duck added an incredible flavor to the sauce. The portion was small so you probably should not choose it for a main course. Selection of cheeses for dessert was a great choice and all the cheese was excellent. We got a lot of help from the sommalier who proposed great value and great wine. Great restaurant.

An old favorite which fell from grace

By Susan L |

Started out as a lovely evening on their beautiful terrace, the kale salad was dressed nicely , followed by the duck paparadelle which we shared was delicious . All three of us ordered the fresh petrale for our entree and it was horrible. Over cooked, no flavor and served over huge beans which also had no flavor, at $30 I was choking it down. Even dessert was marginal, the sabayon was very grainy and separated. We had previously enjoyed many wonderful meals here, not sure I'll return. So sad.

Fantastic food and great service

By iliketoeattastyfood |

Having found this restaurant using TripAdvisor, we had an excellent meal - beautiful, creative, fresh food. This small restaurant was by far the best place we had eaten in our two week California trip. Attentive, friendly service made the experience excellent all-round. Taking a cab there, it was not difficult to find although it is certainly tucked away out of the regular tourist trail. Highly recommended.

Great neighborhood restaurant

By Clive H |

About $75 per person with a bottle of wine. Kale salad, Crab crostini, pork lasagna and pasta special were fantastic. Wine options are a little pricy but good. Would definitely return.

Lovely courtyard, go for lunch!

By bldit2 |

Went with friends. On the expensive side but very good service, delicious salad to start and very good fresh pasta, with a decent red wine. We shared desserts. Two for four people is plenty...they’re very rich. Main dining room is a bit of a crush even during the week. Next time I’d like to try the side dining room which looks out over the courtyard...I think it’s prettier...or if it’s warm enough, eat outside. Note to management: on Open table we were first told you were fully booked. Tried later and got a table for 6:30...but there were several empty tables when we left.

Lovely ambiance with consistently good food!

By frqentravlr |

This was my second time here and it was terrific. The restaurant is out of the way, tucked down an alley across from a superb florist shop. There is indoor and outdoor seating. This time we ate indoors. The menu choices are varied and made with very fresh ingredients. The wine list is mostly Italian and is well chosen. The service is very attentive and not pushy; the wine service is superb and informed. The overall feeling is relaxed which makes for lovely evening of good conversation and well prepared food. Who could ask for more?

Enjoyable food and atmosphere

By WPQ |

We liked the atmosphere. Quiet, but not snooty. Convivial, but it doesn't sound like a bomb is going off. Friendly, knowledgeable service and no attitude. There is an outdoor patio area in the courtyard if eating outdoors is your thing. The food was very good. Standouts were the pasta special with small summer squash and sausage, the pork chop, and sfingi for dessert. . Watermelon with burrata was a "B" and the fried olives were okay. Not as good as the ones at Barbacco. I think this is a restaurant where, if possible you should order the daily specials. I love a nice cheese course. They offered only four cheeses, but all of them were delicious and varied. For an "Italian" restaurant, i was surprised there were no Italian cheeses offered. Prices were in line with what one would expect at a restaurant of this caliber in the city. We would return, which sort of says it all...

Accommodating Front of House

By Arlene H |

We called late in the afternoon and were able to get a reservation on the patio, but we were hoping to be inside since we had an infant with us. The person at the front desk called us shortly after we made our reservation to let us know that she could seat us at an indoor table and we had a lovely spot with plenty of room for the baby. About the food, it was good enough, but nothing extraordinary. The Caesar salad was skimpy, and the food was not worth the price. While they couldn't have been more accommodating, I probably wouldn't return.

Hidden star in a sleepy hood

By GeopatraW |

I live in San Fran and really am ridiculously spoiled by the choices we have here of the most amazing restaurants in the world. So, when I say no need to take this with a grain of salt you can believe it! Went to Sociale last night with a friend and was not expecting much, but had probably one of the best meals I've had in this city. The pan fried wild boar ravioli was crazy good, and the pasta special as well. The sea bass perfect too, with fresh baked bread and butter that tasted like it was part mascarpone. They also allow you to half pasta orders, so you can kind of do a tasing of pasta and follow it up with a main course to split, if that's to your liking. The service was excellent, with no less than 5 people tending to our table. And, the atmosphere of the outside patio was charming too, with heaters and sparkly lights adding to the European vibe. Oh, and keep in mind that the menu changes monthly, so if you're going to try the Wild Boar Ravioli, better get there soon!

Sociale: where every meal feels like a love letter to Italy

By iVoRy T |

How have I not yet penned a tribute worthy of Sociale—a hidden jewel sparkling in the heart of San Francisco? This isn’t just dinner. This is a journey. A portal. One step into Sociale and you’re no longer in the City—you’re in a sun-drenched Italian village, where time slows, wine flows, and every dish tells a story. Yes, it’s small in size—but oh, the soul it holds! The outdoor patio hums with joy, laughter, and candlelit charm. It’s a scene from a Fellini film, and you’re the star. The food? Transcendent. Crafted with artistry, precision, and unmistakable love. I’ve savored many of their creations, but the seared scallops, duck pappardelle, pan roasted petrale sole, pici with bolognese, clam linguini are the stuff of legend—enticing, flavorful perfection that lingers in your memory long after the last bite. Behind it all, a team that radiates warmth. Service that’s attentive yet never overbearing. Plates that arrive like gifts, each one an offering of flavor, beauty, and heart. Sociale is not just a restaurant—it’s a celebration of life, flavor, and the magic of shared meals. A place you don’t just dine—you belong. Run, don’t walk. This place is nothing short of divine.

Fantastic San Francisco Eatery

By Zachary N |

Really enjoyed this place. In an easy to get to area (* see below for added recommendation). First thing you notice is the pathway leading down a little side street. Has a European feel to it and immediately adds some ambiance. There is outdoor seating which is quite popular year round. They do have outdoor heaters. The inside is cozy and well appointed. Nothing over the top, but has a lot of class. The food itself is fantastic. The menu changes often, so what we had (Salad, artichoke hearts, gnocchi and Steak) may or may not be on the current menu, but it was all very good. They have a "green sauce" that is unbelievable. Trust me. The wait staff and staff in general was top notch. They had two glasses of Prosecco brought out (we never asked for it) right at the beginning in celebration of me and my wife's engagement. Wine selection was good too. Really recommend this place to anyone who enjoys hand prepared food and a great ambiance. Make a reservation! * I highly suggest going to "Spruce Bar" across the street for a drink beforehand. Very top notch bar/restaurant and a nice way to start ( or even end) and evening.

Hidden Treasure

By Khunhappy |

Sociale is a well kept secret in San Francisco. The menu is always very interesting and the dishes are very, very well prepared. My wife and I go as a tradition every year for lunch before Christmas, and every time we are delighted and leave very pleased with the experience. Today I enjoyed the oyster mushroom soup and the wild boar ravioli with saba, then with a persimmon bread pudding for dessert. The mushroom soup was simply the best I have ever tasted. She had beet salad and a stuffed petrale sole. The restaurant also has a very deep wine list, featuring Italian wines, but also with some New World bottles. Service is always friendly and attentive.

Lovely - perhaps too close of comfort

By KKD SFO |

Sacramentos Street has a number of very good restaurants. Sociale is an elegant little space where you can be seated way too close to other diners. I loved the service, the petrale sole was very good, and I think the couples on either side of us were intrigued by my date and me. Had been there twice - will return and avoid tiny tables for two.

Worth a visit

By TheWillingTraveler |

Sociale has gotten better over the past few years. Forget the ridiculous pronunciation gimmick with the name, but Sociale fulfills a critical role in the Laurel Village area as perhaps the most "neighborhoody" spot with food you'd actually want to eat -- the other contender being Garibaldi's, which can be good despite not enough elbow room, but it feels more like "going out" on the town, more a martini place than a glass of Barolo. A few old tropes around the edges, with the sweet potato gnocchi not needing the prominent fried sage *and* so much chopped chestnut and holiday spice flavor. But the fried olives are always good, and the overall experience good enough to warrant return visits when you want a warm, intimate Italian place in an otherwise empty part of town. The wine list is limited but totally satisfactory. I recommend it.

The Best Italian in San Francisco

By David K |

Spectacular meal in this hidden gem that transports you back to Europe. We had a great table in the patio and in spite of being mobbed, Jim the experienced Master Som and Mateo took wonderful care to make sure we had a memorable meal. We started out by sharing the olives and burrata special that were paired with some lovely bubbly and moved on to the ceasar salad and apple and arrugula salad which Jim paired with a great white. And it only got better. We shared the linguine and lobster and the homemade pasta was cooked perfectly al dente which we enjoyed with a rose and then topped it all off with the pork special and the Santa Magalena classico. We never miss a meal here and neither should you if you are lucky enough to snag a table any night of the week.

Service and food do not match the prices

By rfchristianop |

This was my third visit to a restaurant which pleased me in the past. However, the pici bolognese was basically a bowl drowning in sauce, with very little pasta, and the Wagyu braised ribs were dry, although on an excellent polenta "mash." But what was offensive was the behavior of the wine steward. Although there were three in our party, we made it clear that only two of us would be sharing a bottle of wine. He came with three glasses anyway, and then, after pouring the wine, went away with our bottle. When, after about twenty minutes, the bottle never reappeared, I asked our waiter to track it down. The wine steward then came back, plopped the bottle on our table, and disappeared. At dessert, two of us ordered the cheese plate. There were supposed to be four cheeses, but there were two slices of the same cheese because "they were out" of another cheese. At least the kitchen could have furnished a substitute. For the prices Sociale charges, I would expect more professionalism and courtesy.

Sociiale....Spot On dining experience

By Richard S |

Fantastic restaurant in San Francisco. Spectacular wine list to with their innovative menu. Every detail of the preparation was spot on. Highly recommended in San Francisco and Not a tourist spot..

Verg good dinner

By jimbelenis |

I was looking for a dinner spot close to Kezar Stadium after a soccer match. Found out about Sociale by chance. We got to the restaurant early for our reservation. They were able to seat us fairly quickly. Our waiter was very informative without being pushy. I had the fried olive salad. I chose it because it sounded different. The olives really complimented the baby greens. I followed it with the petrale sole stuffed with shrimp and spinach. The sole was so flaky and good. The dish was well put together. My wife had the wagyu steak. Saying that it was tender would be an understatement. For desert we shared the Sicilian fried dough with vanilla milkshake. This was very similar to Greek loukoumades. The honey pistachio topping was not too sweet. Which was good. The topper was the milkshake. It was a real milkshake in a real milkshake glass. I don't even want to think of the calorie count! The wine list is very extensive. All in all it was a very nice dinner for the two of us. We will return.

Tiny Gem Tucked Away in a Little Alley in Laurel Heights

By foodieSanMateoPark |

I had been meaning to come to Sociale ever since I saw it reviewed on Check Please Bay Area. It is a charming little restaurant tucked away in a little alley in Laurel Heights. The service was attentive and friendly and the Italian food just delicious! A little pricey but it was okay for us because we were using a LivingSocial Coupon. Although we sat indoors where it is a bit crammed, there is a lovely outdoor seating area heated by heating lamps. I would love to return for brunch and sit outdoors. The fresh spinach pasta with clams was just to die for! I also had the braised ribs which were very good. My friend had a petrale sole. For dessert, we had coffee and donuts and it was fantastic!!! The only thing that I thought was overrated were the polenta fries - unseasoned and a bit limp. I would definitely return - hopefully with another coupon - to make it a bit affordable.

A hidden gem and well worth a visit.

By Craig D |

This was a recommendation from our concierge and very impressed. A lovely little restaurant set back from the main road. Meals were of a very good standard and service was very attentive. Wine seemed a little pricey but very nice. We both felt it should be higher rated within trip advisor compared to other places we have seen and been to.

Delicious but $pendy.

By David P |

This restaurant may be a little hard to find but it is worth searching out. Very nice atmosphere, a good date night spot! If you're looking for a bargain you may want to search elsewhere, but if you enjoy excellent Italian food with an impressive wine list this may just be your place. We were not a date night couple but a family group of eight and the bill was $450. Between us we had several tasty and unusual appetizers, and several different pasta dishes. Portions are big enough but not huge. Our wine was one of the least expensive at $45.

Delicious Food

By Mike Z |

Sociale is a small Italian restaurant worth visiting when in San Fran. I had the Tagliatelle with duck, which is their signature dish and it is understandable why - it was superb! Good wines and beers to go along with your dinner. Note that they only have wine and beer and no other alcoholic beverages.

Hard to find but worth it

By Philip R |

What a great place for a delicious meal. I recommend ordering a variety of appetizers and entrees to share with your party. That gives you a great opportunity to experience the range, variety of their menu and savor the experience. however, avoid the chicken pot pie. It was a disappointment. The desserts are very good but too small and too pricey. Regardless of that, I would make it a point to visit when I return to SF! Make sure you have a reservation.

Solid Choice in Outer Sacramento Street Area

By PacificHeights7 |

Sociale is a good choice for delicious food in the Laurel Heights/Outer Sacramento Street area. We went one night last week. There were six people in our party and everyone had something different. We all loved it. I had the petrale sole with rock shrimp. It was delicious. We enjoy sitting in the outdoor patio area. Parking isn't too difficult in this area.

Intimate Italian Haven

By luannedesign |

We had an excellent lunch celebrating my best friend's birthday in this tucked away, cozy eatery nested among the high end boutiques of Sacramento Street. Warm decor and attentive service set the tone as we relaxed and dined for a couple of hours, savoring a mouthwatering flatbread as an appetizer, rich and subtle with melted cheese and hint of onion. We ordered hearty entrees including the memorable Pappardelle with braised duck, porcine mushrooms, peas, truffle essence - a dish my friend had enjoyed here before. We also sampled the eggplant parmigiana cooked to perfection with heirloom eggplants, chanterelle mushrooms, nepitella pest, tomato, asiago and goat cheese. The Brunello wine by the glass was an ideal complement to our dishes, and the waiter surprised us with an amazing slice of flourless chocolate cake with a candle for dessert. The prices are reasonable, including their minimums for using the adorable private dining space in the courtyard at the entrance to the restaurant. Their courtyard also is delightful in the evening with twinkling lights in the trees adding to the Italian charm of the ambience.

Good for nice quiet lunch

By Travel_Fan2007 |

My sister and I had our Dine About Town lunch here last weekend. Very good portions and quality of food for a good price! We had the salad with candied walnuts, apple, pear and parmesan vinaigrette (yum!) and for entrees, we got the smoked pork rigatoni and wild mushroom pot pie. Very nice, clean presentation. I liked it that the food was not too salty. I also ordered the fish chowder prior to the salad. I really enjoyed that soup...creamy, tasty without being salty and with good-sized fish like salmon in there. Big portion for an appetizer. I could have had that soup and bread only for lunch and woukd have beena happy camper. Service was friendly and attentive. My soup came piping hot within what seemed to be only 2 minutes of ordering it. The restaurant is in a nice neighborhood and I think having this tucked away at the end of an alley made it more quaint. I would definitely recommend this place and would want to try to come back myself.

Consistency Counts

By JacksonSE |

My wife discovered this little gem some years ago. It was on one of our first trips to San Francisco after we spent part of our honeymoon in the Bay Area. Since that first visit (2006?), we have eaten at Sociale each time we return. We have never been disappointed. Well, she was a little disappointed this time because we missed seeing Chef Harris on this trip. (For the record, Chef Harris could not pick us out of a line-up, but we have met here a couple of times, and my wife loves her, her restaurant and her accomplishments.) Back to the review. We have dined at Sociale on weekends and week nights. We have never been disappointed with the food or the service. This last trip was no different. We took members of my wife’s family who had not taken our advice preciously to try the place. They were, it appeared, suitably impressed. At least, there was nothing left on their plates when the server removed them. The only item(s) I would not recommend on the menu is (are) an item(s) containing ingredients one does not like or to which one is allergic. Everything we have tried there has been great, including one item we ordered without realizing it contained raw lamb. If I had known, I would not have ordered it, but after the fact was glad I did. Sociale is off the beaten path on Sacramento Street. It is located down small alleyway, and one wonders if they are headed for the right place. I can assure you it is the right place, at least based on our experiences. The food is always well prepared and beautifully presented. I would also suggest trying at least one dessert. The Chocolate Oblivion Cake and Sfingi are worth trying, even if one’s eyes were a little bigger than their stomach when it came to entrees.

Favorite San Francisco Restaurant

By Kiyo M |

Each time we visit San Francisco we always make it a point to come here for lunch and dinner. Year after year, this is one of our favorite places to be. The food and service are exceptional and the cozy restaurant with an outdoor patio is lovely. May I recommend the pappardelle duck ragu?!

Expanded room but not the food

By snorkelbabe243 |

The ambiance is good with outdoor heating. My meal was very disappointing, I ordered lamp chops, which I love, which came raw, not rare. It was a busy Saturday night, maybe an off night, but I felt that care was not taken with the meal.

Not flavorful entrees, served tomatoes that had not fully ripened

By sb_travels |

Friends highly recommended. We were very disappointed. Heirloom tomato salad had little flavor, tomatoes not fully ripe. They simply should not have put that on the menu that day. Both of our entrees were really bland. They looked really good but both lacking flavor, which was so odd given the descriptions. Only the deserts were flavorful. Atmosphere was romantic and service was highly attentive. We won’t return because the food disappointing.

A culinary, atmospheric treat!

By Jerry S |

When our San Francisco family members suggested Sociale, located on a quiet street of mixed residential and high end stores and offices in Pacific Heights, we had no idea what to expect, other than knowing that they are S.F. "foodies" and wine aficionados.(In fact, they are the people behind a wonderful new Sonoma Malbec... "Shana Vista"!) The interiors at Sociale are a very appealing contemporary minimalist setting. Service is superb, from the explanations of the wines available (a great wine list.), to the rather creative dishes. Between the four of us, we sampled tastes of our respective appetizers and main courses and found them faultless. This has clearly become a neighborhood favorite, as well as a place for those in the know...

I just love this place

By Steven G |

I have been a fan of Sociale since it was recommended to me 12 years ago. Every time I am in San Francisco I feel myself drawn there. Sociale is one of those places that it seems like only locals know about and that never disappoints. On this visit I took two friends from the Santa Cruz area who had never been before and all of us loved it, as usual. You really have to order the fried olives as an appetizer to share. They are delicious and unique and truly whet your appetite for the rest of the meal. There seems to have been an expansion of the indoor part of the restaurant that looks like a very nice separate room. If the weather is nice the outdoor dining is positively delightful. Because Sociale has virtually no street frontage and you take a fairly long walk down a very narrow pedestrian alley to actually reach it, the courtyard in front is very protected and intimate. On this occasion we were dogless and ate inside but I have enjoyed dining in the courtyard very much. There is virtually nothing on the menu I could tell you to avoid. If it sounds good, it is. While this is not a cheap dinner, for the quality of food, room, and service, I think Sociale equals many of the bigger name San Francisco dining spot and will be about half the price. Give it a try and then don't tell anyone else about it.

Disappointing as it came recommended by 2 sets of friends.

By travelmomadventure |

My review may be biased by the fact that we were initially seated outside and had to move inside because of an obnoxiously loud group behind us, who did not quiet down despite our glares as well the glares and comments from another table of 5 people seated outside. Once moved inside, we were squeezed between a wall and the path to the kitchen. But the halibut was overcooked and the asparagus/burrata not very flavorful. The cinnamon sponge cake was dry. Our friends enjoyed their bread pudding and the whole branzino looked great and was filleted nicely. Spruce is right across the street, and while a bit more expensive, worth the money! Not only are the tables not squeezed together too closely, but I have never had a bad meal at Spruce. The service was good until the end when we had to ask what had become of our desserts.
