Always busy always good

By Steve W |

No reservations but always worth the money ! Big menus and can not say in 30 plus trips ever a bad meal. Service is been extremely consistant. Probably many employees with long tenures . Enjoy a mango margarita and a great Chili Reano (sp) . Ask for some warm green Tamatio (sp) salsa for the chips .

Busy

The wait was over an hour for a table at 7:30 on a Saturday night but was lucky to eventually find 4 seats at the bar and ate there. Food good.

Sol y Luna Delicious food and great service

By phyllisb14 |

Our servers were friendly and excellent. The food we chose was the best Mexican I have had in a long time including the guacamole made right at our table. The restaurant was very busy which to me shows the merit of the restaurant including food and service. You won’t be disappointed.

GREAT

fun fun fun. Guacamole made table side outstanding. Great food large portions. Fish salad was delicious. Tacos were shredded beef. Wonderful salsa. Busy

Gotta try it once

By christineess |

I met some friends, had to valet (cars came back okay but what a scary lot) we had a long wait - no reservations, won't seat until everyone in the party - same old story that others have posted. I had a shrimp salad which was really kind of boring. My friends really enjoyed their dinners so I ordered incorrectly. I was a little surprised when the bill came, they charged us for the large table side guacamole (it was good but too big for us and we had at least half of it left over and we had ordered the small size), they charged us for extra tortillas (waiter offered my friend more tortillas without telling us that he was going to charge) and the drinks were pretty expensive. So, if you can deal with the lack of parking hassle and having to stand in the front while waiting for a table you'll get some good food (if you order carefully) and good drinks - it'll just set you back a bit (and some charges you might not expect). I'll go back but not for a while.

Authentic Mexican food with warm ambiance

Always busy, but worth the wait. Really authentic Mexican food - love the fresh guacamole and great margaritas. Carne Asada, Arroz con Pollo, Flautas de pollo. Sabrososisimo!

Molcajete! Molcajete! Molcajete!

By Sandy Q |

I have been here for dinner several times and only had a mildly negative experience once. The bar is usually PACKED, standing room only and I use the term "standing room" mildly. Crowding aside, I have never waited more than 3 minutes for one of their delicious margaritas (get the "upgrade" to Patron, it's worth it) from the very attentive and efficient bartenders. I highly recommend ordering the Molcajete (for 2-3 people and you will have left overs!) it is truly amazing. If you like guacamole, you will LOVE theirs. They make it fresh at your table and we practically licked the bowl. The one negative experience I had occurred when my friends and I ordered the Molcajete and it arrived to our table cold. The server seemed annoyed that we expected this sizzling dish to, at the very least, be hot. He took it away and brought back a torched version. Although the shrimp was so burnt it stuck to the molcajete vessel and was inedible, the rest of the now sizzling dish was full of chicken, beef and nopales (cactus) and the flavors, outstanding! Both the corn and flour tortillas are great so if you can't decide, ask for half and half when ordering.

Bienvenido!

Be prepared to wait, particularly at dinner, to get into this very busy, very fun, very good Mexican restaurant open since 2004. Valet parking in back.

Mexican Food at its BEST!

By Barry N |

I was to get to this restaurant by 5pm on a Saturday night to be able to get in. Well, there was already a line. And for good reason. The restaurant and bar was packed and well worth the wait. They make the avocado guacamole right at your table and the flavor was sensational. I was here with 4 other family members and we all raved about each of our dishes that were all different. If you visit the San Fernando Valley in the LA area, this is a MUST visit. No reservations so get here early!

Go to spot

Honestly one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in LA. I’ve been coming for years and have never left disappointed. Service is great! Margaritas also great!

Decent food and atmosphere fair

By Otto F |

Have eaten there before but found this visit not as satisfying in terms of food and atmosphere. Chili Rellos was fair. The crust of the pepper tasted dull and the cheese inside was not warm but rather lumpy and hard, it too had little flavor. The noise was deafening inside with little opportunity to hear conversation. This is a young people's restaurant as evidenced by the clientele. My friend's margarita had little or no alcohol. The chicken soft taco was fresh and decent in taste but not outstanding. Their guacamole dish was outstanding with tomatoes, cilantro and creaminess. Service was fair although it was extremely crowded and servers were very pleasant. The enchiladas were flavorful. The pace of the meal was good. Drinks were served while we able to enjoy the guacamole before our main dishes arrived.

Great Fun and Fabulous Food

By David C |

This is the place to visit and enjoy if you love a fun atmosphere and authentic Mexican food with a Southern California flair. It's become one of my favorites because you can always count on meeting interesting people, savoring some of the best mixed drinks anywhere and then the highlight...feasting on Mexican food that is delicious and prepared fresh for an unbeatable combination. Come prepared. There's usually a crowd and yet you don't feel crowded. Instead, Sol y Luna has created a place that always feels like you're among friends even if you're meeting them for the first time. The place is decorated year - round in a rainforest holiday motif if you can picture that but it works. Somehow, you can accept there must be a place like this with a paper mache giraffe next to a macaw and dripping lights over a dark mahogany bar. Also, it's noisy but not annoyingly so just loud enough to let you know there are others who also appreciate a great hangout with a meal thrown in. Speaking of meals, order the specialty of the house, the molcajete (mol-kah-he-teh), a sizzling volcanic deep dish rock lined with melted cheese and served with an array of delicacies...shrimp, beef skirt (fajitas), chicken and sautéed cactus strips bathed in a rich, seasoned red sauce. You can order the small portion that feeds two or the bigger version for 3 to 4 depending on your appetite. And either portion comes with a side of rice and beans plus corn or flour tortillas. Believe me, you won't leave hungry. Plus don't forget to order a top- shelf Cadillac Margarita. Blended is best. This is unforgettable. Oh, one last tip, if you get there when it's super busy, ask for Lupita and ask her to seat you in her section. Add something extra to her tip and you'll never have to wait long. A table at Sol y Luna is like beachfront Malibu property. Comes with a price but anything worthwhile always does. See you at Sol...

Dont particularly like Mexican food. But this restaurant has changed my mind. Guacamole and mango margarita was superb. Chile relleno did not disappoint. Coming back. Worth the 45 minute wait

delic!

By Rana |

everything I've tried has been good, including the drinks but my fav is their signature dish the Molcajete. This can easily feel 3 adults.

Great Servers!

By TheFunFoodie |

Sol y Luna has the sweetest servers in LA! They also have an incredible Spicy skinny margarita! It’s insane... on the rocks or blended. Woo hoo! Their outdoor dining area is cute for a meal out with friends or a date. The food is good. But go for the service and margs.

Great food, great vibe

By LuvToTravelAround |

Decided last minute to eat out on a Tues night. U got to try the molcajete dinner for two. Delicious

The best!

By Catarina Francisco |

This restaurant has a very cool ironwork throughout. Food was good and portions were just enough. Offers plenty of choices. Attenyive servers and the strolling Guitarist plays beautiful romatic songs. Very romantic restaurant. Keep up the good work!

Super friendly and great service and most important delicious Mexican food. Recommend the fresh guacamole that is made at your table!

My favorite Mexican Restaurant

By Robin7333 |

I have to watch myself carefully not to eat here too often. The restaurant gets quite busy in the evening. We like to go for an early evening meal, about 5-6 PM. The table-side guacamole is fantastic, and you may choose your own ingredients. Their margaritas are strong, and there is a large selection of types of margaritas as well as a large selection of tequilas. I particularly enjoy their crispy chicken tacos. They put in a lot of vegetables, so I feel as if I am eating a salad as well as a chicken taco. Speaking of salads, their salad is fresh with a tasty cilantro dressing. Their chicken soup is better than anything that I can make at home. It is full of large chunks of chicken as well as avocados. They serve it with fresh tortillas, and it is a meal unto itself. I thoroughly enjoy their plantains, and save them for dessert. I have eaten their chicken mole on one occasion. It was rich and delicious, and I would eat it every time, except that I need to watch my weight. The restaurant is not large. It has a great bar scene where you can also order meals. It is on the noisy side, but we are usually so busy eating that being able to hear one another isn't an issue.

Most authentic Mexican food I've ev had

By Tinicka W |

We couldn't leave LA without trying a Mexican restaurant. This restaurant was what we needed! Everything about this place was fresh and authentic! Our waitress helped us pick our dinner..she was very friendly and helpful! Only downside was the place is small so the wait was 1hour 20min But the bar is first come first serve

Can Mexican food get any better?

By irishsalsa |

I have a lovely tradition when I visit my friends in Tarzana (where the restaurant is located). They pick me up from LAX and we drive to straight to Sol y Luna for dinner. I start with a Cadillac Margarita on the rocks (great!) then we have the fantastic table side service guacamole made to our liking. The avocados are always delicious; just the perfect ripeness. The Mexican food is traditional, comfort and no doubt fattening. Well worth going off the diet though! Can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. It is ALWAYS busy.

Atmosphere plus Flavor

By Muscatravel |

Happened upon this Mexican restaurant in the area of Pearce College. This restaurant is on busy Ventura Blvd in Tarzana Ca but once you step inside you are transported to South of the border . This restaurant has beautiful iron work throughout . The food was good and the portions were a good size, not huge. Menu offers plenty of choices.Felt service was exceptional and the strolling Guitarist plays beautiful romatic songs. Very romantic restaurant. Enjoyed

Good food..TERRIBLE WAIT

By Bill G |

I have been to this restaurant several times. The food is consistently good - no question about it. However, I doubt I will return as they do not take reservations and the wait is horrendous! It is a very cramped area to wait and very uncomfortable - unless you want to wait outside in the cold.

worth the wait

By draftxng |

lively and vibrant ambiance, enjoyed a cocktail while waiting. accurate time estimate of wait. staff is very efficient. table was lovely, food delicious! i have some special dietery needs and my requests were met pleasantly and accurately.

Cool atmosphere, great food.

Table side madness

By csimmamps |

You come for the food (especially the guacamole), you come to the drinks but what you don't realize you're really coming for is the entertainment. Andres plays a fantastic guitar.

Bday cousin

By Happy Life |

The customers service is great 👍 the food delicious 😋 decoration of restaurant super nice and classy like movie set ... price are fear a little small the place but maybe become more private and parking place is ok but also you can park on the street .. this is excellent place to celebration 🎉

I would go back

By NGTB_1 |

Place was quite busy, as I understand it usually is. The beer was cold, great margaritas, the food tasted fresh, great service. I think the guacamole cart where they mix the dip to your specs is a bit gimmicky but it was enjoyed by most.

Yum, yum, and yum!!

By JohnWaters2014 |

Yum, yum, and yum!! One of the best Mexican places in the valley. Table side guac is a plus! I personally enjoy the sangria here.

Great food, great prices

By Peter A |

We found Sol Y Luna when we moved to Tarzana 2years ago. Authentic Mexican dishes. The food is always great. Service is friendly, almost home like. The wait time to get a table can be long, but it is always worth the wait. Their Chile Verde Burrito is the bomb...

Mexican food that WILL rock your world

By Joe D |

I had a business meeting last night with a client of mine and he suggested Sol y Luna in Encino. He talked it up, and talked it up. What's good? "Everything" he said. You want to know something, he was right. Enchiladas, Burritos, Tacos, freshly-made-at-your-table guacamole, fresh, steaming hot chips and a massive bowl with incredible sauce filled with shrimp, chicken, beef and Mexican hunks of cheese was one of the best things I have ever eaten. A must if you're in the Valley.

Late Night Friday Dinner

By chachelia |

We came on a Friday night around 8pm over Thanksgiving weekend as a group of 5 (4 adults, 1 child) and we were told the wait would be 45 minutes. When we were debating leaving the host said it may be shorter than that so we put in our name and waited outside. It took between 30 and 45 minutes for us to be seated, but I guess that is to be expected on a Friday night. As we sat through our meal the tables around us remained empty as the evening progressed closer to closing time (10pm). The ambience and décor of the restaurant really set the mood for the whole dining experience and make you feel like you are eating at an authentic little Mexican restaurant in a small village. The server quickly brought us some waters and 3 of the adults put in orders for margaritas. Another attendant brought us some chips and salsa to help quiet our groaning bellies as we were quite hungry from waiting so long at such a late dinner hour. We ordered the fresh guacamole and the gentleman came around to our table and made the fresh guac right at our tableside. It was made perfectly! Just the right combo of ingredients and the cilantro and lime were not overpowering. Definitely the highlight of the meal. The two gentlemen ordered burritos (one gringo style one traditional) and they both seemed to enjoy their meals. I ordered the combo platter where I could pick any two items so I chose cheese enchilada and chicken tamale with rice and beans on the side. The cheese enchilada was thin but delicious and the chicken tamale reminded me of the ones my grandma used to make but there was spice hidden somewhere in it and the description on the menu didn't say anything about spicy or jalapeno so it surprised me and I didn't really like it since I am so sensitive to spice. The food was decent but I have definitely had better in other states (but I would have to come back during another visit to try other things off the menu), and I really wanted to have my socks blown off with how long the wait was. I was impressed to see Molcajete as an option that's something I don't see at most Mexican restaurants. The service was good and the staff was friendly. The thing that brought the rating down to a three for me was the restrooms. Anyone that follows my reviews know I always rate on food, service and cleanliness and the bathroom here was dirty. There was toilet paper and products all over the floor. They had plenty of staff running around and as a former server I know that in general staff should be taking turns each hour checking on the restrooms. So it was pretty disappointing to see such a pretty restroom (fixtures, decorations, etc) brought to rest stop standards with how filthy it was.

It was okay....

By jdreynoldsjr |

I went to this place with my wife and a co-worker. The service was fast and my water was never left unfilled and my chip bowl was always full. The staff was very wonderful and super professional. The food was slightly above average. The place is worthy a visit once a month. My biggest concern is parking sucks. I had to wait over 5 minutes for the Valet and cars were backed up so I paid $1.00 for 1 hour parking on the street. Also, they did want to seat us until we all were inside. We were parking two cars and they refused to seat us until the entire party of three arrived. I find this crazy especially if the party is "here" just parking. I understand if the party is "on the way" but we were in spitting distance. We should not be faulted for a poor valet service. They do have lunch specials under $10.00

Loud, tasty, very slow service, cramped...forget about parking.

By Robert P |

Came here with 9 co-workers to celebrate a birthday and going away party...surprising to us, they sat us in an area sufficient for 6, with 2 other table filled nearby. I could barely hear the people across the table from me it was so loud. Service was poor, had to ask for chips, salsa twice before they brought a refill, asked for water twice, annoying to say the least. The food was excellent, had the mixed pot of stuff, delicious! Margs were okay, and forget about parking unless you want to pay $4 valet which i don't like, particularly at a Mexican restaurant! Overall average, sorry.

Great Shredded Beef

By Karen H |

I met a friend here for lunch (12:30pm) on Thursday and it was jammed. They have valet parking in the back, which is free during lunch and four dollars in the evening. This is a huge plus, since parking on Ventura Blvd is a pain. The tortilla chips were wonderful, but the salsa was just okay. It was very spicy. Normally, I load up on the salsa, but I found myself skipping it. I ordered a two item platter - One shredded beef taco, a cheese enchilada, refried beans and rice. The shredded beef was excellent. It was a huge platter and I ate most of it. Very, very good. Our server was nice and attentive. He didn't refill our ice tea, but I also didn't ask. We lingered at the table chatting, by the time we left, the rush was gone. I think this restaurant is very used to a quick turn-over during the lunch rush. It's a loud restaurant, lots of birthdays being celebrated. Fun vibe. This is a great spot for Mexican food in the valley. Like my review? Check out my blog!

Authentic Mexican!

By NicoleKalil |

I'm half Mexican and my grandmother owned a restaurant when I was growing up...needless to say I'm pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food. This place is the best I've found in our area...by far! The food is amazing, the margaritas are strong, and the service is good. The only negative is the wait since they don't take reservations... But you can grab a drink from the bar and it's worth waiting for. Their burritos, tacos, and enchiladas are great, but I'd recommend getting into some of the less common dishes...their albondigas soup, chile verde, chile relleno, tamales, and ceviche are some of our favorites! It's one of our favorite places to take people when they come visit. It never disappoints!

Great little hidden gem!

By Nancy Meets the World |

The food, the atmosphere, the price...everything is great in this place. Just be prepared to wait for a while to get a table as don't take reservations.

A classic local Mexican restaurant!

By MissD819 |

I have been coming here for over a decade and have had nothing but good experiences. The food quality is delicious and fresh and there is a classier feel to this restaurant but still laid back which makes it perfect for special occasions or casual dining. I have also ordered for take out many times. There is a wait at certain times of the evening and weekends but most places in So Cal are like that.

Nice atmosphere, great food

By EDK_11 |

Great food and food choice, atmosphere was great as was service.

YUMMY!!

By Daniela F |

I have been going to this place for a while now.. Its really good. The food is very yummy. Great atmosphere. Waiters are really nice. Only downside: Parking is horrific, you can only valet in the back or try to find a meter parking spot on the street. and it gets very very crowded. They don't accept reservations, unless its a large group. So plan to wait a while.... but the food is worth it.:)

Amazing Mexican Food

By NilooG |

Really it's one of the best restaurants to go to for Mexican. The food is amazing and the portions are huge. The family that runs the place has two other ones in the valley, Las Fuentes and Melody's and all three are awesome. The only issue I have with Sol Y Luna and why I am not giving it a 5 is because it's so loud in there. You can't hear yourself think! Everything else is just amazing.

Quaint shop, average food

By Jasper E. |

Compared to the many fantastic, authentic Mexican foods you can get in California, this place tends to fall into the Americanized drawer. The food was very simple and lacked good seasoning.

Very good food

By SingaporeBms |

On a local recommendation we went to this week known Mexican restaurant. If crowds are indicative of quality then this is your place. We waited 40 minutes for a table on a Tuesday night. The house special is the homemade guacamole done table side. Well worth the order. The menu has plenty of choices to suite all food interests. Recommend to all.

Tequila!

By beachycali |

I love Sol y Luna, have gone there with friends many times for an early Sunday dinner. Fun ambience inside, with different color Christmas lights hanging from the ceilings, and lots of Southwestern art. Love their margaritas, and I really enjoy their guacamole, which is made table side. The only downside is that it gets incredibly crowded (and loud) in the evening. It's not uncommon to have a 30 minute or longer wait, just make sure to get there early. Also, sometimes the wait staff kind of ushers you out as soon as you're done eating. It's mainly because they get so crowded, but in any case you shouldn't go here with the intention of lingering over a leisurely meal.

Real great Mexican food and great tasting margaritas

By Adriana C |

Passed the restaurant many times on the Blvd and finally stopped in to eat. Now we are regulars. Real GREAT tasting Mexican food on Ventura. Everything taste fresh and delicious. My husband loves the shrimp burrito and freshly made guacamole and I love the chicken tacos. The margaritas are great tasting and not light in alcohol. Place is always busy and loud. If looking for somewhere quiet and intimate, not really the place for you. But if you are looking for a great authentic meal at a great price this is the place to be.

No More Happy Hour !!

By Rene R |

We went there yesterday expecting a fun time but it turns out that they no longer have HH. That explains why there were hadly any people and told the staff to ask management to update the website. The atmosphere was stale and the vibe was certainly not happening. Needless to say, we are not going back to my beloved Sol Y Luna for the forseeable future.

Best Mexican Food in The West San Fernando Valley

By Barry K |

Everything here is fresh and delicious. Sol y Luna is split into two sections with a lively bar area, and a very lively dining area as well. Great Happy Hour drink and Menu specials. Chips and salsa very good. Table-side Guacamole is very good, but beware, leave some room for your main course. The carnitas is very good and the chili relleno is very, very good. Look, everything here is good okay? Make sure you have plenty of time because there are no reservations and there is always a line. You can't go wrong here!

OMGoodness!!! Yummy!!!

By desertgirl829 |

Fresh guacamole made at your table - the BEST I have every had. All food was tasty. Spicy salsa. The biggest Chili Relleno I've ever eaten, and I ate it all because it was SO GOOd

Delicious.

By Netster11 |

Delicious Mexican food, with efficient courteous service. The guacamole is made at your table as per your preferences. Delicious.

Great food, drinks, authentic

By Rezmataz |

I knew I have to try this place. After all I saw just lines every time I passed by. I succeeded today. Alone. Had guacamole prepared by a very entertaining fellow. Make sure to tip him. Salsa very tasty. Highly recommended

Elevated Mexican Food...Delicious

By Charrie F |

What a great experience. Food was great, the presentation was great. I would go again without hesitation. They made the guacamole table-side, it was the best I'd ever had. Chips were a little thin and the salsa was too hot for me, but that is an individual thing, others probably love it. I had the Chili Rellenos, which was out of this world. My friend had the Molcajete...incredible. We each had a drink, so with the tip, the total was nearly $100, which is steep, but it was great, really great.

Great Service, and Great Food

By AdrianG |

After discovering this restaurant a couple years ago, my wife and I end up eating here just about every 2 weeks. They have a fun decor, good service and most importantly great food. While there is usually a wait for a table (15-45 minutes), if you get there between 5-7pm, they usually have a table on the patio or bar area for happy hour. I highly recommend the Mulchahete for two, the Poblano Chicken Mole, and the chicken wings appetizer - really, these wings are crisp and tasty! The best I've had in LA.

All hype

By ExperiencedTravelers |

If the food was as good as the nose level is high this place would be off the charts. But, alas, the food is just average Mexican. Couple that with crowds and a difficult parking situation and this is average at best. You can do better elsewhere.

Fun and more fun!

By NeedsAVacation25 |

My friends and I meet here if we want to just do happy hour, or what's even better, if we want to eat and drink. Best food, great service, amazing bar and even better drinks. We're now on a every other week basis, and let's face it, we live in LA there are a lot of choices, but we keep going back.

Great Mexican food

By Beata K |

The best guacamole ever, period. The table side guac is a must, it's a bit pricey but so worth it! You can choose how spicy you want it, we got the mild and it had the perfect amount of kick. The salsa that hey bring to your table is also really good, it's spicy and smoky and oh so good. We shared the beef taco lunch special and it was more than enough food for two (with the guac as an app) as the portion is pretty big. The atmosphere is really nice, the decor is cute, whimsical and inviting. The only downside was our waitress who took her time doing I don't even know what in between getting the check and refilling water, and on top of being slow she wasn't very friendly

Great Food

By Randy2353 |

A great restaurant to eat. Can be very crowded with waits, be patient or consider off hours. Valet parking in the rear of street parking on the boulevard if you are lucky. Cool, interesting décor. Service is good. Guac made at the table is a must. Everything is good here including the margaritas. Priced right. Can't miss on this one as long as the wait doesn't hurt.

Fantastic Mexican

By Cosmo W |

Wow! What a great Mexican restaurant! The vibe, the food, the service, all 5 stars! 2 of us dined, we started at the bar with the chips and salsa- fantastic. After we moved to our table, we ordered the Table-side Guacamole, and man, was that awesome! Fresh! We then split a main course- Molcajete Sol y Luna- a massive bowl of meats, cheese, cactus and veggies that was absolutely phenomenal. The service was wonderful, I like a staff who seem genuinely interested in your visit. The prices are fantastic as well. You can not go wrong eating here, I promise.

Best guacamole made at the table

By csimmamps |

Always crowded, that is because the food here is excellent. the family that owns this restaurant owns melodies and las Fuentes is well, all of them are great restaurants with exceptional Mexican food

Holy Guacamole!

By KPTcouple |

My husband had a long-term business engagement in LA, and his coworkers introduced him to Sol y Luna---it was their "go-to" Happy Hour/Dinner place. It quickly became his favorite too. On a recent trip back to LA I accompanied him, and he suggested that we head there for later dinner. Even at 8:30 PM the dining room was packed. We did not wait long to be seated however, and each staff member that we passed greeted us like we were regulars. Our drinks came quickly, and we enjoyed ice cold beers as we perused the extensive menu. The tableside guacamole is the best that I have tasted---just perfection and the portion is HUGE. Also, the salads are fantastic--their house made green dressing is light and flavorful (with lots of cilantro.) There was a great, fun energy about the place. There seemed to be a lot of patrons who were celebrating birthdays, bachelorette night, etc. Our waitstaff was efficient, and checked on us numerous times. The portions were generous, and we left with enough leftovers to eat another full meal. Did I mention the generous potions??? I am not sure about what parking is like during the day, but we used the valet parking and had no problems with it.

The best Mexican food on the planet

By LimaBar |

Los-Angeles is known for having the best Mexican food but this one tops them all. the atmosphere is amazing the food is insanely good and we always have to go back when we're in town.

Really good!

By txtraveler2009 |

Authentic Mexican food in a really nice atmosphere. Service was fantastic. Pretty small inside so be ready for a wait. Valet parking behind restaurant for $4.

Worth the wait

By K W |

We had received recommendations for this Mexican restaurant from the locals. The on-street parking is a dollar per hour hourly and so you have to get up and feed the meter with the credit card but trust me it's worth it. They do have valet parking but we didn't use it. We had a 45-minute wait on a weeknight. Ordered a hard taco and a tamale plus the guacamole that is made at the table. Chips and salsa were provided. All quite good. And we had of course margaritas although strangely they were not in margarita glasses they were still very good. The ambiance is excellent with the pillars made of carved wood and walls painted with murals of famous Mexican actors of the past. Recommend.

Hearty Food, Great Bar, Good Service

By H K |

It may be small, but they pack them in because everyone likes The Cantina, and judging by all the regulars we see, you have to know it's the place to be. Happy hour starts @ 3 & get there early for dinner - no reservations. Eat at the bar or in the restaurant section, they treat you great all around, lunch or dinner. Suggest you say hi to Ricky the bartender and he'll take very good care of you with a full bar that he runs with precision and a big smile. Always a good meal, no matter what you decide on - I like to start with the chicken soup, which is nearly a meal in itself. The salsa and pico de gallo can't be beat for taste and freshness. Valet parking to the rear and an outside patio compliment the establishment.

Just ok

By janetr996 |

This place is quite authentic in that if you want to go to a Mexican restaurant, This is the place to be. Our wait was approximately 25 minutes unfortunately, there was no place to stand so we seemed to be in everyone’s way. Our waiter was pleasant and accommodating and quite efficient in getting us whatever we needed. We ordered sangria and the bartender went out of his way to make us a white one which usually is not available. Unfortunately the orange juice in it tasted like it had turned and we needed to return it for a different type of drink. We had cheese and chicken enchiladas with rice and beans which was very tasty but not hot. We also had a steak dish that was very good but again not hot enough. All in all, our experience with the staff was good but the food was just mediocre.

Amazing

By wetlandfan |

We had diner here with the family. It was so yummy. Service was terrific and the food was amazing. Lots of choices and dishes that you just don't see on menus back East. Molcajete Sol y Luna is definitely a must!

Good ..... Not Great, Previous Experience was Better

By Love vacation time |

Eight of our family visited the restaurant for an early dinner. We started with 2 guacamole that were made at the table.....delicious along with the the chips. We ordered four sides of refried beans that were enjoyed with the chips. My corn tamale was not to my liking at all. Two quesadilla were ordered and both individuals enjoyed same. In addition the individual who ordered the shrimp taco (soft shell) said it was good. We had a side of tortillas, and 3 Molcajete Sol Y Luna........I didn't care for it although the shrimp were very good, I didn't enjoy the chicken or beef.....cheese was very good. The other individuals sharing the plate were pleased. We had two margaritas, three peach margaritas, one bloody mary, 3 Don Julio ReposadoTequilla, one corona beer and one Herraduro Silver AS Margarita. The bill came to $339.50 including the tip they added for a party of eight in the amount of $47.30. The liquor portion of our bill was was $161.66 with tip so you can see that the food portion of the $339.50 total bill was not expensive.......only about $177.00. Server was exceptionally nice. This is a very popular restaurant and I realize that my review may be a bit harsh......so give it a try. My wife and I will return, but I will select different food items

Best Mexican we have in San Fernando Valley

By mabemeister |

We love the choices, the ambiance, the staff & the food. Salsa is spicy, chips are crisp. Margaritas could be better if made with pure ingredients such as lime juice; not a mix. Can get guacamole prepared at your table.

If you love Mexican food this is the place

By GunnarFroberg |

The food and services are excellent. The best Mexican restaurant in the area. The Margaritas are a must. The Tostada Verde and Plato de Chilli Verde were excellent

The best Mexican food

By KarenTobi |

This is some of the best Mexican food in Los Angeles and one of the best values in the city. I've eaten at this location and a few others and I've never been disappointed. I've gotten burritos, quesadilla, tostadas, and tacos with fish, shrimp, beef, and simmered chicken and it's always good and very reasonably priced. The simmered chicken is incredible.

Classic SFV Mexican cantina circa 1976

By MooshLA |

Every time I drive by this location, I see long lines or groups of people congregated outside. This is due to a blend of both popularity and the fact they do not accept reservations, rather waiting lists (aka first come, first served). It's certainly a neighborhood favorite as you'll see every table filled on a random weeknight as soon as 6P. The service is outstanding - usually featuring dedicated, happy and helpful servers who have been employed there for over 15 years. They certainly take pride in this location and ensuring you have an informed, high quality experience. That I truly enjoy. The chips are fresh (and thankfully fried in vegetable shortening) and the salsa is fair. I ordered a favorite dish Chile Relleno which comes served with refried beans (has pork in it) and rice (has chicken broth in it) - therefore mine was accompanied by black beans and steamed vegetables. The beans were as to be expected, the veggies totally overcooked and flavorless and the main dish itself was tiny and not fully cooked. The cheese inside was barely melted - and again I was surprised on how small the chili itself was as compared to virtually every other Mexican restaurant I've ever been to over time. The interior is circa 1976 and likely has not been updated or touched since that year. There is definitely something valley nostalgic about it (similar to Studio City's Casa Vega) however you do wonder when the last time the back of the house was cleaned. Parking can be challenging here - yes they have a valet lot in back but street parking can be limited (usually meter based). It's nice to know it's in the area however there are far better Mexican restaurants in this area alone.

Favorite Mexican place in neighborhood

By LostAngeles |

We've been going to Sol y Luna for many years now and it has been consistent. Food is good, margaritas are awesome and the place is always crowded. We go early and mostly during the week evenings. During the weekends is impossible to get in without a long wait. Service was always good. Our favorites here are side table guacamole, tostadas and margaritas.

TASTY & ENJOYABLE LUNCH

By Jean P |

I met my son here for a late lunch. The service was excellent and food was good. I had a Skinny Margarita along with lunch, both good. The restaurant was quiet and our booth was comfortable making for an enjoyable time. I've tried to bring my husband there--on a Friday night and a Sunday night but both times people were backed up outside and the wait was untenable so we left.

Big Bar hangout

If you are looking for action this is the place. If your looking for great mexican food this is not it. To loud, to crazy. I want my mexican REAL.

Delicioso!

By John L |

This Mexican restaurant was recommended by our desk clerk at the Hotel we stayed at down the street. It was GREAT! We were eating "light" and ordered Fish Tacos. Our waiter, Jose suggested the guacamole in addition to the entree. It was a large bowl made fresh at the table and we thought, "How can ever eat all of it?" Well, once we dug in with the nacho chips we knew we could if we only had enough room in our stomach. We are accustomed to Tex-Mex and my spouse had been reluctant to try a fish taco, but she has been converted after tasting these! Great atmosphere, although the room is a bit dark. Room is very colorful decor --of course!, it's Mexican. What would you expect? and they serve a great margarita. Moderately priced and great service.

Great Food

By JoJoKoK |

The table side guacamole is amazing! You can customize it and we were both able to customize our own! Their queso fundito is another must!

Amazing food and friendly service!

By Chandra M |

They often have long wait times at dinner so my family loved having a late lunch here on a Saturday with no wait. I had the best enchiladas of my life!

Tasty food and friendly staff

By its_Marci |

Sol y Luna is always consistent quality and service that will never disappoint. But, that comes with being crowded all day and night long. Even trying to game between the lunch crowd and the Happy Hour crowd doesn't work, as the food keeps people coming at all hours. Definitely authentic floors and dishes from different regions of Mexico. Worth the wait.

Best Mexican Restaurant in the West Valley

By IVillela |

The food and the atmosphere is great. The only problem is that it's small and it's always crowded. There is always a wait time during dinner time. It's worth waiting for.

Great food, long wait, terrible noise

By Maya M |

The wait for a table at this lovely Mexican restaurant can range to 30-45 minutes on a regular week night. The place is bustling with people. Perhaps it was just our bad luck... but people at the tables next to us were being extremely loud... We couldn't hear ourselves. Still, the service was fast and friendly, the food was delicious, and the guacamole -- made fresh at the table -- is a hit!! For Europeans: pay attention... as in many places in America, the sizes of the dishes are BIG. We couldn't finish 1/2 of what we ordered... Takes getting used to...

Very good neighborhood Mexican restaurant

By Martin Y |

Very good food and service, however if you go in the evening, be prepared for a 1+ hour wait, lunch is the better option

I love this place

By Rascoolbreeze |

If I could eat here everyday I would. Amazing queso, best carnitas burritos and shrimp tacos! They also make guacamole table-side which is enough to feed 5 people! Ricky makes their house margaritas nice n stiff too! Great Great place for Mexican food.

Sol Y Luna serves up very nice Mexican cuisine in a nice environment.

By Roberts69 |

I always say that California is one of the best states in which to get great Mexican Food when in the USA and "Sol Y Luna" continued that theory. Sol Y Luna is a Mexican restaurant that is very popular, I had to wait about 30 minutes for a table and it is a good sized restaurant too. It has great interior decor, lighting and ambiance. Service was good and the food I had was also very good. I had the tableside prepared Guacamole, delicious, followed by a Burrito De Machaca which was also very good. All washed down with a very nice draft Mexican Beer - Modelo Especial Draft. I finished with a Flan for dessert which again was very good. The cost for my 3 course meal and 1 draft beer was US$35.51 which wasn't too bad. In summary if you like Mexican cuisine then I recommend a meal at 'Sol Y Luna' in Tarzana CA91354.

Best Food in the Valley

By joelaing7 |

One of the last good Mexican food places in the Valley. The mole is excellent. There’s healthy options like salads on the menu. I loved the Modelo draft, served in a massive goblet. The salsa is pretty hot, but they’ll give you milder sauce on request. Valet parking in the back is the best option, and reasonably priced. The bar is lively.

Great Mexican food...nice atmosphere!!!

By Steven U |

Picked this restaurant just driving down Ventura Blvd., There were people waiting outside and my girlfriend and I were hungry. Didn't like the valet parking scene, so parked across the street at the meters. We were told the wait could be 45 minutes...however, we were seated within 15 minutes. Within minutes, we had wonderful chips and salsa. I felt the salsa was a bit on the thin side...made quite a mess!!!. We ordered the specialty of the house, the molcajete, a sizzling volcanic deep dish bowl with melted panela cheese and served with a variety of delicacies...shrimp, beef strips, chicken and cactus strips bathed in a rich, seasoned red sauce for 2 people. We were also served rice and beans (we chose the whole black beans) and chose corn tortillas. Since we had so many chips, we tried several of the meats and had to take home a box. I think that volcanic dish was still bubbling when we were ready to leave. The red sauce was probably the best I have ever had. I also really liked the cheese.... The margarita (ordered on the rocks) was good and fairly strong...thought it might have had a bit of orange in it (which I didn't care for). The place has colorful murals on the walls which were nice, was crowded and seemed like a fun place to go to. I'm from Northern California (Bay Area), but if I could, I would eat here once a month at least. Service was very good also...water glasses filled, dishes taken away at the right time. Prices were fair (under $20 per person). Overall, very pleased. I hope to update this place to excellent on my next visit.

Customer service not a priority

By CarolRororo |

This was my 2nd visit and while the food is good, the service and attitude both need work. We are a business group that needs separate checks and they have a 2 check/table limit. This is 2015, people! Even though the table's bill will be close to $300, they still nickel and dime the bill to excess. I will think twice about returning.

Delicious & authentic Mexican cuisine

By Grant Alexander |

Sol Y Luna in Tarzana is a truly wonderful place, everything has been fantastic on each of my visits. Everything was really on point, even with their waitlist feature where you can follow your spot. The wait is usually minimal and is no problem at all, but with how popular and delicious everything is, it is not surprising there would be a crowd of people wanting to enjoy as well. The Management Team here is very smart with the waitlisting, so simply plan ahead with it on Yelp and everything will go smoothly. I also found it really cool how they make the guacamole from scratch right in front of you too, and you're even able to customize it to make it even better for your particular taste. They also have another location Las Fuentes which should also be really good too. I really liked the interior decor as well, it makes you feel as if you were actually eating in a restaurant in Mexico. I have loved Mexican food all my life, and this is one of, if not 'the' best Mexican restaurant in the entire SF Valley. Super convenient and affordable valley service as well, but there's plenty of meter parking on Ventura as well. Both inside and outside seating is available, and inside it adds to the lively vibe with all the ambient noise and sounds of everyone else having a terrific time too. Without a doubt, the best part of the visit was Mairena, who was the definition of a helpful and affable person. The entire time she was friendly and checking up on me to make sure I had everything I needed, which I really appreciated. I think the method in which the bartenders made the spicy chile cucumber margarita she recommended was one of the best I've had. I took quite a bit of her time going through the menu to make a decision and she was a wealth of knowledge about each and every item. I want to come back here for many reasons, but her exceptionally gracious way of conducting herself is probably the most important one. The chefs and kitchen team really hit it out of the park with the chicken and steak nachos she recommended, too. The ranchera and guajillo sauce was very tasty and the chicken and pico de gallo really stood out too. Across the board, I had a truly splendid time here, everything was superb and the entire team provided impeccable service with nothing bad or negative that I can even think of. Everyone should check this place out for themselves and see why people have been loving their authentic Mexican cuisine for over a decade.

Great Mexican Food, reasonable prices

By Mike B |

This was our second visit for lunch. First time I had the green corn tamales and they were better than my old favorite from OC. This time I had two fish tacos alacart, they were outstanding. My wife had the carnitas enchiladas which were also great. The house salsa was so good we bought a 16 oz portion to go and took it to a Labor Day barbecue, everyone thought it was the best

Love this place!

By Nancy Meets the World |

I visited this place because friends have recommended, my only regret is that I have not been there before! The food, the drinks, the service and the mural is the icing on the cake! You may find yourself waiting for a table for quite some time, but you can enjoy a drink at the bar while you wait. At the bar, ask Jose to make you a Michelada; those are the best you'd ever try! Then at the table, ask for a molcajete and prepare your taste buds to have a fiesta! Overall, the best Mexican restaurant in the San Fernando Valley.

Tasty, filling, and great table side guac

By Paul K |

Nicely decorated with tons of dia de Los muertes and other eclectic Mexican art. Good chips and salsa. "Different" range of menu items may lead you to pick outside your standard choices. The carnitas burrito was excellent. Flautas too. Having "gringo style" as a menu option tells you a bit more about the place. Service is excellent. Head and shoulders above any of the Mexican chains. Top choice Mexican, off peak time, for its location---many people wait an hour for a table.

Fun

By Precious14 |

I went with a group of friends and we had a great time. They did not take reservations ahead of time so when we arrived it was crowed; we had to wait until our party had all arrived. That was a bit disappointing. Once we got seated it was all great. We ordered a platter of appetizers which had a little bit of everything. After that I ordered a plate of carne asada which was delicious. Overall it was a great experience the only down fall is it's a small place so when you arrive you have to wait a few minutes before being seated.

Crazy, noisy, but fun!

By nah59 |

Sol Y Luna is always busy, no matter what the time or day of the week! No reservations are accepted, and they won't seat you until your entire party is present. But the food is consistently good, the atmosphere is crazy (although may be too noisy for some), and it's a great place to meet up with some friends and have fun!

Best Mexican sit down place I've ever been

By Sarah S |

Wasn't expecting much and WOW was I shocked by the food. So delicious and always full. They don't take reservations so just be aware--but worth the wait.

Valley Favorite

By Michael M |

This place is very good on all levels. The Staff is welcoming and the food is just great. We have been hearing about this place for a while, and it was everything it was suppose to be. Great Tamales and the Carnitas, the salsa just right. It's always crowded, but ell worth the wait.

Table side guacamole is fantastic

By csimmamps |

This restaurant is always crowded so be prepared for a wait, but it is worth it. Fun bar scene and good food are typical of many Mexican restaurants. But the star here is the customised Guacamole prepared at your table, fantastic. the waiters make it a show in its selfe.

So tasty and good value

By ToryMcG |

Friends took us to this restaurant as we wanted some authentic mexican, and it was soooo good! We started off at the bar as there was a 45min wait for a table, but this was fine as we were keen on some margaritas. When we got our table, a guy came around making guacamole to order, table side and it was very delish. 3 ordered the signature dish, Molcajete Sol y Luna and it was massive! It comes out in a hot stone dish, bubbling and smelling delicious. They didn't even get through 1/2 of it! So that was doggy bagged up and provided us with another dinner at home. I got the Chile Relleno, again it was yummy and massive (1/2 also got doggy bagged). Overall, really good flavours, value and atmosphere. Would definitely go back.

Busy, Buzzy and Belicious.

By SandersMusic |

Don't be daunted by the crowd you'll most often find at the door, or by the slightly claustrophobic feeling you get as you inch your way toward your table. This place serves up some fine, fine Mexican food. We're new to the neighborhood, and tried Sol y Luna on off-hours, just to avoid the worst of the crush. This was very wise. Service is personable if a bit brisk, and the food was on point throughout the meal. Worth a stop; worth a trip. LA has an embarrassment of excellent, authentic Mexican food, most of which is found somewhere other than a sit-down establishment… but this is good stuff. Recommended.

QUESO FONDUE BABY

By carol K |

Yummy food, worth the wait, Order their special, cactus, onion, cheese, beef, chicken, shrimp. It is like fajitas but far better. We go here for girls night out or just take the family for dinner, You will not be disappointed here

Delicious food

By Brent N |

We started off with the table side Guacamole, chicken quesadilla, tamales, and burrito de carne asada. I loved the atmosphere and the service was impeccable for a Thursday night.

Never Ever go there - Verbal abuse awaits you

By Bill G |

If you want to be treated rudely and have a terrible experience, go to Sol y Luna. I will never go back to this restaurant and I will tell everyone that listens about how their staff, especially their patronizing manager, actually treats their customers. The manager, who said his name is Pierro, needs to go back to his original profession as a prison guard. He verbally abuses the waitresses (witnessed by all in our party) as well as the customers. He is rude and disrespectful on how he speaks to whoever he comes in contact with. We observed him speaking rudely to his staff to the point of us demanding our check and leaving. He then proceeded to stare us down and rudely ask us what is our problem...we were shocked. He acted like a bully and was so antagonistic that it bordered on a verbal assault. We immediately left without finishing our meal. We asked for the owners name and this bully told us he was the only one in charge. We thought this was a family owned restaurant; obviously not since no business owner would ever tolerate this level of service

Good Mexican food

By domenicovaler |

My wife and I had just arrived in LAX, Got our rental & went straight to this restaurant for lunch. It was 100% worth it, even with having to park on the street with a meter. The environment is great, nice decoration, color, vibe Bathrooms were clean We ordered Carnitas & Pescado a la parilla The pork in the carnitas was amazing The trout was seasoned & bones removed Both dishes were large Both tasted great We have no complaints Would go back without any doubts Great value : food vs price

Great Food, Long Wait Times

By Jim4456 |

Been there over a dozen times with family and friends and qualities of great food and ambiance still prevail. The valet parking is convenient, affordable and efficient. Yet I must share an important drawback. No reservations not even for large (6+) parties. You simply have to wait and the wait times have ranged from 30 minutes to and hour+. Dinner seatings have the longest wait times particularly on the weekends. Noise levels can also be a bit high so try for a corner booth. Enjoy!

Best Mexican in LA

By Jen |

My husband and I lived in LA for 2 years and Sol y Luna because an almost weekly event for us! The table-side guacamole is to die for - definitely one of our favourites! The burritos are HUGE and super tasty. If you're going to get margaritas, splurge and get the Don Julio Añejo tequila - AMAZING! I guess the only downsides are that it's super busy so you should try to go early in the evenings. Weekends are at least an hour wait and they won't seat you until your entire party has arrived. At lunch time you can pretty much get in right away. I'd highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants a great mexican experience. The atmosphere is so fun, great service and super tasty food.

Disappointing

By Mikepoly |

We went to the resturant last week and the place was packed with lines out the door. The wait time was 25 minutes and they were spot on with thier estimate. I had the cranitas and my two friends had the enchiladas. They food was OK (very typical Mexican resturnat fare) nothing special in my opinion. The service was a little spotty. The coffee was luke warm and right after desert we were given the check and asked to leave (evidently we had hit the 2 hour time limit for a booth). Overall a so-so experience. Not sure I would go back.

Another Fantastic Mexican Restaurant

By BCMCLover |

We have been having a lot of Mexican lately, and this is some of the best. I have never been to Happy Hour...but it's always packed, so I assume it's good. But the service and food in the restaurant are always wonderful. They have the most amazing cilantro salad dressing on their house salad, and they have some wonderful different items on the menu....I have never had a bad meal. The carnitas burrito is delicious. Their fish is fresh and wonderful. Salads are as good as the chile relleno .....and I love all the appetizers. They have one with steak, cheese and bacon and a thick corn tortilla that is enough for a meal. Best margaritas and good selection of tequila. Table side guacamole is fantastic...but it's a lot of food so think about how hungry you really are.

Not your Tex-Mex ordinary Mexican restaurant

By jeffrey k |

This was a family meal, and we had excellent service on the patio. Some traffic noise, as one would expect, but a pleasant place to eat. There is an emphasis here on regional foods with different spicing, so the meal is a treat. Their mole is fine. The salsa is home-made, and has the flavor of the roasted chilis. They have some unique stew options. We had guacamole prepared at the table side, and the only tiny criticism is that it was a bit heavy on the lime, but that is my personal preference in action. On the other hand, one can never have too much guac. prepared in such a fresh manner.

Wish I lived right next to it!

By SeaBee1828 |

Possibly the best Mexican I've had anywhere outside of Mexico! It was worth the half hour wait. Service was friendly and efficient. The guacamole was excellent and we loved the fact that it was made right in front of us. The Especialidad De La Casa was so good I couldn't stop eating even when I was stuffed.

The BEST in the area!!!!!

By traveler4k |

The best place to eat in Tarzana. The atmosphere is awesome and the food is DELICIOUS! If you ever make it for happy hour, all the dishes are half off and yummy $3 margaritas. get the shrimp quesadilla appetizer! YUM!

Love this Place

By Iris S |

This was my second trip to Sol y Luna and enjoyed it just as much as the first. It's a very popular spot because the food is delicious. No reservations so you have to wait it out to enjoy an elevated Mexican food experience. Margaritas are a bit expensive running about $30 for 2 however. Service is always consistently good.

Great Mexican Food

By SimpleGuy145 |

This was a place several friends and family recommended. Great carnitas. The rice and beans were delicious. Drove over 20 minutes to try this restaurant and it was worth it. The only negative is the need to valet park if street parking is not available - still worth the effort and minor expense.

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!!! yum yum yum.

By Kelly M |

This is our favorite restaurant when we're visiting family in this area of the United States. We always want to come here for dinner, and we love love love the homemade gaucamole, made right at your table. This time we actually had 3 bowls of it, made differently each time!!! The portions of the meals are big, the ambiance is loud, friendly and fun! Yes, we will return the next time we're visiting family!

Moonstruck!

By Brian M |

We went here for a family get together. Parking is restricted nearby so valet is a must. They do not take reservations so one of our party took one for the team and went a little early to secure a table. The place was packed out with a bunch of folk waiting. We ordered some killer Patron margaritas and began dipping into the chips and salsa. Guacamole was ordered and prepared at the table. The restaurant was new to my wife and I, so we were recommended their special Mexican pot dish. A huge selection of mixed meat and veg from shrimp to beef in a velvety sauce. One of our party is vegan and they provided a grilled vegetable burrito. All the usual rice and bean sides were supplied. All in all great food and a lively atmosphere. A good time had by all.

Best Margaritas in the Valley!

By 5115 |

This restaurant is the best-I love love their margaritas (go for the Mango and you will forever be hooked!) The food is excellent too with prices to match. Every time i go to LA I meet up with friends here as there is nothing better in the San Fernando Valley for a great night out.. The caveat is that they are ALWAYS packed to the gills (word has indeed gotten around) so I recommend you get there early or you will have to wait in the small bar area or outside (which is fine on a nice nite but during the winter, not so much) It is also noisy and cheery so it is not the spot for a romantic date per se but for a great nite out with super Mexican food and drinks that are well priced-you are in the right spot! PS-Note this restaurant is in Tarzana which is not Los Angeles per se as much as a small city in the northwest San Fernando Valley i.e. if you happen to be in downtown LA and think this is close by-it ain't!

Authentic Mexican food in a great atmosphere

By Jeff C |

Wow. I don't plan to miss this place in the future when I travel to Tarzana. Wonderful authentic Mexican cuisine in a fun energetic atmosphere. The guitar player waking around is a great touch. Plan to go early as they always have a wait. The Especialidad De Le Casa is perfect for sharing.....But what do I know, I'm JUST JEFF

Great fish tacos, keep an eye on the guacamole

By AdeeDrory |

Had a business meeting here today. Had their first tacos which were great. Grilled, not fried. When ordering guacamole which is made table side make sure you keep an eye. The first one was made a bit on the salty side and the second one we asked not too spicy and apparent the guy who made it heard spicy!! Overall great ambiance and great food

This is their Upscale Store in their family tree

By Chris |

From the ambience to the wait staff making fresh guac table-side, the place has been a fave since the day it opened. Many knew it was owned by the same family that owns Las Fuentes and Melodies, in Reseda. Same great food choices. I highly recommend if you want the great fast casual service that Las Fuentes offers.

Go for Happy hour!

By elainees2015 |

There chips and salsa is good and their homemade guacamole is amazing. Lots of happy hour appetizer choices. Service is good!

Que Sabroso!

By Fergara |

Visited the place for the first time, to welcome our niece who was visiting. The place was filled that Friday weekend , and our party of 12 had to cool our heels outside the restaurant. They could use a bigger waiting area to accommodate their patrons, but apparently, space limitations prevent them from doing so. After a 30 minute wait, we were ushered in to the main dining area which was filled to the rafters. Started our order with a round of margaritas and strawberry lemonades, and boy, the margaritas are superb! Next came hand made guacamole prepared right beside your table and it was sheer perfection. Our main dish comprised of molcajete, a house specialty featuring an array of grilled slices of chicken, steak, grilled shrimp, chili peppers, cactus leaf and panela cheese. It was served on a hot molcajete, a pot made from volcanic stone. Other entrees savored included salpicon tostada, carne asada plates, and bite size taquitos. Overall, It was a indeed gastronomical experience of sumptuous, authentic Mexican food. We left the place sated, with a lot of "to go" food to boot. Service is great. This is one restaurant worth coming back to!

Great service , friendly staff, average food

By Props555 |

Parking was available on the street with parking meters, however one hour is the max. Went on a fri, but at 4:30,the place was already packed. Especially the bar. Much to my surprise, it was only a 10 min. wait. The staff was friendly. The place is very colorful, and pretty inside. Very noisy, mainly due to the packed bar. The chips were great, but the roasted salsa was not. I would not think this type would appeal to the masses. Ordered the table side guacamole that everyone talks about. He showed up very fast and you cannot help to see his tip jar. Makes people feel obligated to tip. The guacamole was good but nothing so special. It’s fresh and good, but can be found at other restaurants just as good. I thought the tip jar was tacky. He just makes the guacamole and does not even talk. Food arrived fast , but again , nothing special. Average Mexican food. While the food was average, the service was great, and food was fast, especially for how crowded it was. Was able to have dinner in under an hour with 6 min. left on the parking meter. Later in the day that would not be possible.

Lots of options on menu & delicious food

By Katie W |

This was absolutely delicious Mexican food! It wasn't too heavy, it wasn't all standard fair, & the guacamole was to die for. The housemade chips was delicious, too! The atmosphere is quirky & fun & the service is great. They don't take reservations, but they were able to accommodate us pretty quickly (on a Sunday night).

Amazing Mexican Food and Great Ambiance!!!!

By Neener415 |

First time dining at this establishment was a complete success! The staff was friendly, the food was terrific and the ambiance was amazing! This is a happening place with loud music and lots of happy customers. The food selection is great and they will accommodate modifications. The only small and I mean very small drawback is that they did not have fajitas on the menu which is a dish I always love to try at any Mexican restaurant. One thing to be aware of is the long wait times but with food so good and a place this great, it is worth the wait!! Highly recommend!

Awesome place!

By luvtammy |

I was visiting on a business trip and went here on a recommendation. I didn't know if I wanted to wait 20-30 minutes for a table, but so glad I did!! The meal was so incredible and the service was very good. The restaurant was really noisy, but I would definitely go back if I'm in the area again.

Decent food. Nice experience

By SaraDISH |

The decor is festive and pleasant service. Definitely average Mexican. We ate the Salpicon Tostada, Steak tacos, Chicken Enchilada, and the Burrito de Carne Asada with avocado and cheese. The steak in each dish was slightly over cooked. The homemade guacamole is good and prepared at your table. To quench our thirst we enjoyed a refreshing Jalapeño Margarita & Dos Equis.  Highly recommend making reservations or, better yet, if you can score a seat at the bar area take advantage of the amazing happy hour menu.

Things Change

By Julia L |

Sol Y Luna is a bustling place where you can go and kinda feel like you're at The place in the general area--doesn't always happen in the Valley. Berore it was this restaurant It was a hole in the wall which I never went into for twenty some years. How things can change fast! Although there is usually a wait and a crowded bar, it is fun and the food is good.

Welcome to my backyard

By Joe F |

I had to post this restaurant. It is one of my 2 favorite mexican restaurants in town. This one is true authentic mexican and the people and the food are fabu. The lunch special price cannot be beat, even by hand out shacks. The owner has 3 other restaurants locally and each one is unique. You can get dishes here that you've probably never heard of in the other erzatz mex places. Forget the Acupulcos and El Torritos (except for the El Torrito Grilles) and all the rest. Their beef is cooked perfectly, try the tacos for delightful shredded beef and the Chilli Colorado burrito mmmmmm savory chunks of beef, you might have to ask for it on the lunch special, but they will bring it to me, so why not you ? I'm making myself hungry talking about it, so I'm finishing this review and heading over there now. OH Yeah.... the decor is terrific, as good as the food. The place gets crowded at night, so go for lunch. No pampering with reservations.

Some of the best food I've eaten

This restaurant is awesome! It's small, and it's always busy, with good reason. Delicious chips and salsa, and everything we've eaten there has been fantastic. Enchiladas have the option of mole sauce, tamales are handmade, the chile rellenos are crazy good, and the chile verde comes with a big chunk of grilled Oaxacan cheese. Seriously good. I've never had dessert because I can never finish my dinner!

LOUD! At least on a Friday night...

A group of seven friends decided on Sol Y Luna for a evening out to celebrate a birthday. We arrived at 7:30pm and had an hour and a half wait. We ordered lots of expensive margaritas at the bar then ordered drinks again at the table. We also ordered a number of appetizers - one that was a specialty for multiple people - I think it was about $48. Sometime in the middle of all the appetizers and drinks, our waitress informed us that she would have to charge us a surcharge because we had not hit a dinner minimum of $8 per person. A little embarrassing and off-putting since we were celebrating a birthday - it really brought the mood down. Our bill was already well over $100 (not including bar drinks while being jostled around waiting to sit) so we were surprised - especially after having to wait so long to even get a table. It's popular, it's loud, it's crowded - I get it, but a surcharge and it was about 10pm (our wait was longer than an hour and a half)? We ordered even more appetizers and agreed that this probably isn't the place for us next time around.

Authentic Mexico

Loved it. The beans are made traditionally, retried and the guacamole is table side to order. The Chile Relleno was huge and authentic also. Loved their hard taco. The portions are large, I am would definitely come here again.

Great food!
