Swanky!

By 276elizabethl |

When we planned to meet friends here we checked online reviews and Somerset was called ‘swanky”. Having been there, I totally get that now. What a cool place. Words of Proust splayed across a wall, intimate seating, delicious food, huge wine list. A dining experience and a great place to reconnect with friends.

Excellent food, good drink and service

By Clyde and Nancy H |

Had dinner with friends Saturday night. We were seated at time on reservation and service throughout was excellent. Good wine list although not a huge variety and wines of all levels. The lamb dish is wonderful with just the right seasoning. Salmon and halibut were excellent, cooked perfectly with fresh accompaniments. Stop at Deveraux on the rooftop of the building for pre or post dinner cocktails. Highly recommend both venues.

Lively Spot on a Monday Night

By Anventure |

Comfortable environment, excellent service and engaging menu options. We tried both the beef tartar and octopus for starters-such different flavors and highly recommended. The kale salad was also not like any other version of the salad I have ever enjoyed. A lot of attention goes into presentations and it adds so much to the experience. For dinner we had the scallops—very nice but a dim candle to the blinding starters and salad. We will certainly return.

Breakfast at Somerset

By Alina Caldarari |

Absolutely gorgeous place. It’s attached to Viceroy 5 stars hotel! Delicious food and stunning service. Definitely coming back. Our toddler boy is picky on food. He ate the whole plate of oatmeal without blink of eye.

Swanky/hip place

By GLvacays |

We stayed at Viceroy, and were happy that such a cute place eat have drinks/ eat was right there. We sat at the bar on a Thursday night for a late dinner. Cod fritters were a great appetizer choice, Scallops were amazing- very light & I wasn’t left feeling stuffed. My husband had the highly recommended Mushroom bolognede pasta. He’s usually a meat guy, but loved this suggestion. Drinks were excellent. The bartender took her time making each one carefully. This took longer- but was worth it. We also had brunch at Somerset. The Bellini was my fave- passionfruit, so good. The chicken & fraffle was a unique twist on chicken & waffles. It had a nice spice to it. Monkey bread- to die for. We have no complaints & hope to visit again someday!

Wasn't expecting much...

By mattmcnick |

My wife booked a meal here because she wanted to try it. After checking out the menu online, I didn't expect much. Found the design pretty interesting, from chess pieces mounted perpendicularly on the walls to the floor pattern, and other decorative touches. We were seated upstairs in a booth that was private and comfortable. The menu was different than what was online, and I was even less confident the meal would be good, but chose the "least unattractive" item on the menu in each category (app, main) but as I say, not salivating over the choices. I was very pleasantly surprised! The smoked Beet Tartare (yes, "beet") was fantastic. And the rest of the meal was great. I would definitely go again.

AMAZING!

By Educated C |

This restaurant is above and beyond five stars! I don’t think that you can go wrong with anything you order on the menu, but I do have some personal favorites. The roasted beet (yes - BEET, not beef) appetizer is like nothing you’ll ever taste anywhere else and it is beyond delicious. In addition, the homemade squid ink pasta is another cant miss! My daughters, who are very picky eaters, cannot get enough of the scallops, the salmon, and the hanger steak because all the proteins are prepared perfectly. And all of that is before you even think about ordering dessert, which is a must! Everything done here is superb. From tart and light to the richest chocolate around, you can’t go wrong. The desserts incorporate ingredients that you will probably never hear of again with personal favorites to have an experience you won’t get anywhere else. We personally were blown away with the strawberry shortcake, the lemon tart, and the peanut butter chocolate desserts but the menu changes often to make use of the freshest, most current ingredients available. The atmosphere is like an unpscale, understated yacht club and situated in a great neighborhood on Rush Street. This is a must try restaurant when you’re in the area’

Great brunch

By Am M |

Great brunch in a very nice setting with lots of people and good service. We had the corned beef skillet (fabulous) eggs benedict and cinnamon rolls. The juices were fresh and tasty. Reasonable prices for the quality.

"Food people like to eat"

By Taylor B |

When he was named chef of the new Somerset restaurant at 1112 North State Street on Chicago's Near North Side, Lee Wolen vowed to prepare "food people like to eat." He's done it before. Wolen was named 2014 Chef of the Year and was a James Beard Award finalist in 2016 and 2017. As former chef at The Lobby in Chicago's ritzy Peninsula Hotel, he earned one Michelin star. Now he hopes to earn another one at Somerset. Set on the site of the 1920s era famed Cedar Hotel, Somerset brings new life to the exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood. A Boka Restaurant Group production, Somerset's interiors are designed by the multiple James Beard Award-winning firm Avroko with a bow to American country club culture. Wolen and pastry chef Meg Galus have designed a menu that will attract out-of-towners and locals, too. On our visit, we started with chilled shrimp, chilled corn soup and a baby lettuce with shrimp salad. My wife chose seared salmon with roasted broccoli. I couldn't resist the Somerset cheeseburger with red onion, marmalade, pickles, cheddar cheese and dijonnaise. The desserts are a special treat, lots of delicious and tempting choices. I had to have the butterscotch pudding, an old-time favorite that I rarely find on menus. My wife opted for the Somerset sundae with roasted blueberry ice cream, frozen yogurt, graham oat crunch and coconut lavender marshmallow. Next time we'll have to sample the blackberry Pavlova, which contains pistachio, raspberry and coconut lime sorbet. Somerset is located in busy and very competitive Restaurant Row, where State and Rush and Bellevue Streets converge to form what businessmen refer to as the "Viagra Triangle." Wolen and the Boka Group should fit right in.

First restaurant in my visit to Chicago

By Remedios S |

Love the atmosphere at Somerset. Great service, great food. Beautiful outdoor sitting. A friend of us took us to Sumerset and I will go back any time.

Excellent food and service - We will be back

By Karen W |

We shared the smoked beet tartare, had baked eggs and several aperol spritz to drink. The drinks are gorgeous and refreshing. Others asked what we were drinking. The service was exceptional. We were there for my friends birthday. We got seated outside, the person who seated us and the server both wished my friend a happy birthday, and she received a complementary glass of champagne AND cute little chocolate dessert with happy birthday on the plate. They also catered to our dietary needs. I was given sourdough bread to replace the seeded crackers and my friend requested no chorizo since she's a vegetarian. We gave a huge tip because we had no complaints and they didn't rush us to leave.

You will need reservations for Brunch...Food was good...Unique

By MimiLasVegasLasVEgas |

We had live oysters (very fresh and small) the Fried chicken with French toast was delicious. The Corn beef hash with potatoes where not very good because the hash was cut up in tiny pieces and basically it was a red potato dish with very little hash. The ambience was very nice (two stories) The waitress provided very good service

Excellent service, food, and accommodating!

By M19S99U |

We recently stayed in the Gold Coast District with our school-aged children during Spring Break. We haven’t been to Chicago in over a decade, and never with our kids. We found ourselves a little outside of the norm in that area, desiring good food and good service, but also restaurants that can accommodate those with less adventurous palates (aka our kids). Somerset delivered on all three. We inquired before being seated, whether our children were welcome. They were indeed, and Mom and Dad enjoyed a tremendous meal and cocktails. Our children enjoyed sharing their burger. We were sure to dine earlier in the evening, which I would recommend if doing so with children. The decor is also incredible. We appreciated this experience very much.

Exciting new Restaurant - Somerset

By Jeanius421 |

This is an absolutely gorgeous two story space newly opened by Boka Restaurant Group with award winning chef Lee Wolen. No detail has been forgotten in evoking the feel of an old time country club, with artifacts and photographs all around. There is a beautiful private room for up to 24 that is so cleverly hidden you will never find it without help. The food, of course, is exciting, delicious and beautifully presented. They are open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, Brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday. There is also an enclosed rooftop bar with an open patio in good weather with excellent views!

good option for american fare

By BobbyK312 |

very nice place, attached to the Viceroy Hotel (reviewed separately and outstanding) but definitely not a hotel-restaurant vibe kinda of an eclectic menu, american with fish, meat and pastas, but all very good. the roasted chicken was excellent as was the pasta in squid ink. the burger looked great and so did the cod/corn fritters. next time! our waiter wasn't too pleasant, but I'm not gonna ding the whole dinner because of him. he was not friendly, almost rude but we didn't really have to interact with him much. had to really chase him down for our check, he seemed to be purposely ignoring us, walking by our table and turning away to avoid making eye contact. not sure what his problem was, maybe he was annoyed because we weren't drinking? anyway, we we in a good mood and the food was excellent so not going to subtract a star. hope he was just having a bad day

Great Brunch

By brmusicman |

We had brunch here on a Saturday. Overall, it was an excellent experience. Service was superb. Our server was conscientious about food allergies, knowledgeable about the menu, and warm in demeanor. Water glasses never went empty. The pace of the meal was on-point. The brunch menu leaned towards breakfast options; its size was manageable and the options appealing, with a good mix of savory and sweet options. We were impressed with the food. Monkey bread was sweet, but still haf depth of flavor in the caramel sauce. The salmon and whitefish platter was beautifully presented, and the cure on the smoked salmon was flavorful and not overly salty. A beet tartare was delicious, with lovely sweetness from the beets and a seeded cracker that let the bee's quality shine. The fried chicken sandwich was indulgent but really delicious, with briny pickles. Only suggestion would be to serve it with a green salad rather than fries; fries were a bit too much with the heaviness of the sandwich. The space is extraordinarily well-designed: tall, airy, spacious, and chic. Great experience.

Adjunct to the Viceroy Hotel….

By Mike H |

….meant that there was no out-door exposure during the recent Polar Vortex to make a lunch date here. A big, airy room, with a garden-like forecourt for more clement weather, there were very few customers (hardly surprising), an attentive and charming staff (hardly surprising, either) and a fairly standard menu of salads and sandwiches, all of which hit the spot when it is negative 47 outside.

Wow! Great Food!

By Dewey G |

We went to this place because our Daughter suggested that we meet there for dinner. Great location, Great atmosphere and Great Food! My Halibut was amazing! We had Tatiana as our server, who was fun. The floor manager, Adam Marino, was engaging, as well.

Very trendy new restaurant on State Street in Chicago

By Anthony S |

The Somerset is a very trendy new restaurant in the major restaurant area in Chicago. It gets a very young and beautiful clientele. The food is mediocre and expensive. The wait staff were not very professional. The location is fabulous. It is new so maybe they have kinks to work out

Blodless Smoked red beet tartare

By Rolf A |

The staff was friendly and attentive. We got our order in just before the kitchen closed the lunch menu at 2. While I've always liked red beets, smoked and presented as tartare topped with cumin yogurt and some goat Gouda was a new delight. The side of crispy artichokes and potato was a bit oily resulting in little difference in taste between the potato and artichokes. The grated Parmesan over it added little to the overall oily flavor. This portion was big enough for three or four meals. The seared Salmon was tasty while the roasted chicken breast was a bit sweeter than I like. Good with eggplant, though.

Great restaurant from the Boca Group

By msstrauss |

I ate there with my wife and two other couples last night. The food, ambience, and service were all excellent. We followed the recommendations of our server and he made all the right calls. It was great. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in Chicago. I had the ribeye and a squid pasta dish. We tried tons of the suds and apps as well. The oysters were some of the best I have ever had. After dinner, we went up to the club on the top floor. The views of the city were amazing up there as well.

Lovely ambience and excellent service

By Mariainmichigan |

I went with my husband during our weekend mini break in Chicago and we loved the interior and in particular found the service outstanding. They immediately put our wine on ice and were very attentive with refilling. I had the scallops for my main and they were superb. The appetizers were yummy but the ones we had were rather large (Mediterranean flatbread especially!), so just beware not to fill up too much early on (my husband has a hearty appetite so this was not a problem for us, but might be for some!). Overall, a very pleasant evening.

Great food and atmosphere

By chris92009 |

I always like to check non-chain type of restaurants when in large cities and this restaurant is one I will probably return to next time. The beef is amazing along with the chicken.... beers are micro-brews, wine list is deep but reasonably priced. Overall, great atmosphere for a date or business. The upstairs seating area is my favorite to sit.

Tasty food + good service + cute greenhouse dining rooms

By wakina2018 |

I have been here several times and it hasn’t let me down on every single visit. Food is delicious. Service is good (Jarad is a star ⭐️; he always gives good recommendations) and lately, they also set up a bunch cute individual greenhouse to dine “outdoor” in the winter for separate parties due to covid.

Fabulous Dinner at Boka Group's New Gold Coast Restaurant

By Marion H |

Had an absolutely wonderful meal at this handsome new restaurant in the heart of the Gold Coast. Decor was a surprising nautically-inspired theme--just off our yacht! Food was full of flavor, inventive, and delicious. Bi-level setting felt chic yet open and welcoming. We shared several appetizers (we were a group of 7)--especially loved the beet (yes, beet) tartar and the salt cod fritters. Not as pleased with the beef tartar. The Parker House rolls were warm and delicious. Open kitchen was fun to look into and not too noisy or distracting. We had many of the entries--all were yummy (several bites were shared). Shout-outs for braised short ribs, salmon, venison, sea bass, and duck. Rib-eye wasn't as good as the rest. Had brussel sprouts and broccoli side dishes and loved them. Desserts were all outstanding--my daughter was blissed out by the toasted marshmallow ice cream. David our server was incredibly attentive: fun, engaging, paced our meal just right. Sommelier was friendly and helpful with the wine list. Look forward to coming here again soon--and plan on trying it for brunch and lunch, too!

Anniversary Brunch Celebration

By Margaret R |

Enjoyed celebrating our wedding anniversary at Somerset. Our Menus were personalized with Happy Anniversary and the number of years we’ve been married and we were given complimentary champagne. Our food as usual did not disappoint. Would recommend any of these dishes along with My husband’s burger and the smoked beet tartare. The avocado toast pictured is only half of the portion and without egg at our request. Their Aperol Spritz is very refreshing and popular. Make reservations at least 2 days in advance Even with reservations we waited over 25 minutes for our table.

Nice atmosphere, good food

By Doymo |

We had a group of 10 and had a nice table, good service, and great food. The atmosphere is trendy. Salads were particularly good. Wine was well priced. Would visit again.

Shocke!

By DJR1250 |

There were 6 in our party and the service was pretty good. HOWEVER, the food was terrible. The coffee was ice cold, every omelette was cold, potatoes were cold and the worst part was there was a bug in one of the meals. The manager did the right thing and comped the bill, she could not have been more apologetic, but we were shocked that a restaurant in a Viceroy Hotel had something like this happen.

Great afternoon meal

By Amy R |

This was our first visit and we both enjoyed it. It is definitely more adult and not a place I would recommend to bring children. We both had soup and salad, which doesn't seem like much but both were very filling. My salad was full of ingredients (not just greens like some restaurants) and the soup very rich (almost too rich). This would be a great place for a business meeting or even a date night.

Great location, lively setting and tasty food

By Jim M |

Restaurant is on ground floor of Viceroy hotel. Outdoor and indoor seating available. We ate outside and recommend such if you want the energy of the vibrant neighborhood. Wait staff was excellent and highly attentive to any food allergies or food dislikes. Food was well prepared and presented. Recommend the pastas and seafood. The wine list was not extensive but had good variety. Prices were reasonable

This should be a 4 star rating... please read in it's entirety.

By dcostopoulos |

I wish there were half-stars on here because a 3.5 is a solid score for this establishment. And there is only one reason why they did not make a 4.... price for what you get (That said, this is probably the perfect restaurant for a visit during Chicago's restaurant week!). Somerset is north State St.; it occupies the first and second floors of the Viceroy Hotel which also hosts Devereaux on the rooftop. Staff was very attentive, our waiter was knowledgeable about the foods and specials. Very personable and professional all at the same time! Fantastic seasonal seating outside along State St for people watching and if you get a corner seat, even that can be intimate. Indoor seating is vast with booths and the bar on the first floor and table seating on the second. Just a beautifully decorated restaurant and you can tell they paid attention to detail. The food is presented well. They have an extensive cocktail menu ranging from beer, mixed drinks, specialty drinks, wine and then the $$$ wine. If you know your wines, they have a eclectic wine list here that you should raise a glass to. Our apps were delish... Oysters and roasted octopus for a cold/hot variation. Followed buy the main courses of the short ribs and a salmon they had on special. We sided the entrees with the crispy potatoes and mushrooms as well. Mind you, each side can feed two so choose accordingly. All said and done, Somerset, I really enjoyed our visit. You appear to be a staple in this area although surrounded by many other restaurants. Thank You! Enjoy Somerset if you have never been, but, expect to pay just a little bit extra.

Excellent!!

By bclarke292 |

My wife and I were referred to this restaurant from some friends and we were pleasantly surprised. The entire staff was friendly and informative. We sat outside which seemed like an oasis from the busyness around us. The food? Exceptional!

Brunch worth getting up for!

By chueppe |

Enjoyed our boozy brunch very much and were happy with the unique selections on the menu. We look forward to returning here!

Great dinner

By HPO |

Nice place to have dinner, beautiful setting inside. Outside too noisy, maybe nice for lunch but not dinner. On the way to more stars but service took a while to get going.

Loved Somerset

By Amy P |

The setting was beautiful- and so many choices for seating in warm weather- we could have eaten outside, downstairs, upstairs we took friends as a "thank you" dinner and everything lived up to our expectations, the service, the food, the atmosphere

Elegant

By TravelingTheWorld |

We stopped in for a drink and ended up having dinner. The outdoor seating is beautiful and the interior is too. The wait staff were very attentive and professional. The drinks were good and the food even better. The restrooms are upstairs and it was fun to see that part of the establishment. It is a little expensive, but very worth the stop.

An Amazing Stop!

By JaymePollock |

My Aunt and I were looking to try a place downtown before a show and were recommended Somerset by my food blogger friend. He raved about the place and justly so. The decor is a chic mid-century modern style that will certainly make a great first impression. Our service was fantastic and really prompt. The food tasted delicious and I highly recommend their beet salad! The drinks are also made to perfection. I think this is a great addition to the area and I’ll certainly be back.

Somerset is a great choice for brunch

By Ribig |

Somerset is light, attractive, quieter than most and the food and service are excellent. I enjoyed brunch there with foodie friends and we agreed that we will be back again.

Good Food-a good place for a group or just two

By Karen M |

This restaurant is not housed in the former Cedar Hotel. That hotel was a total dump and the Vegas based designer who created the new design, did a fantastic job. Most of the seating is upstairs and although it was a busy Saturday night, we were able to have a conversation easily as we were seated on one of the sides as opposed to in front of the bar area. The server knew the menu well and was eager to make recommendations. Their wine list was just OK, however very pricey. My one dining companion liked his cocktail-a Manhattan, while another disliked the Pina Colada, as it drifted too far from the traditional. Our appetizers were tasty-we especially liked the veggie flatbread and octopus. Their bread served was also really good. We enjoyed our food-for mains, we had duck, halibut and scallops-which were all very good, as well as Brussels sprouts and broccoli, which were awesome. Our desserts were all very good-what could be bad about apple tart, ice cream and butterscotch? The service-while very attentive, we felt very rushed. Almost immediately when we sat down, we were asked about wine and cocktails-we wanted a few minutes to talk and review our options but our server was quite persistent, although they didn't need the table-hardly any parties were seated upstairs. The bus staff could hardly wait to clear our plates, although we were still enjoying our meal. We wound up giving up and letting them take our food away as we were tired of being bothered so frequently. While the food was good, it wasn't GREAT and both the food and drinks were very overpriced. I hope this place does well as we live in the area, but I am not extremely optimistic.

Great Food and Atmosphere

By scrappythecat |

I had dinner with some friends at Somerset and they were on the money with their service and fabulous food. Their wine and spirits menu was extensive wonderful. I will defiantly go there again.

Perfect Lunch Spot

By NewYorkCityBoy |

Cool vibe, wonderful fresh menu. Nice service. Theres a street side patio and a bar...but the bar has a lousy cocktail menu that need serious attention! Look up! The old neon sign of the Cedar Hotel is hanging on the balcony. Ovealll, a really spiffy place

Awesome time at Sunday brunch

By johnSanAntonio_TX |

We had a fantastic meal with great drinks. Our table was right next to the open doors on a perfect weather day. Eggs benedict was outstanding as was the chicken & waffles with a siracha honey.

Holiday dinner with family, all adults

By Barry G |

Knowledgeable staff and great service. Food and special drinks were outstanding. Really try hard and know their business. Great looking restaurant and bar.

Good Atmosphere

By Road Warrior |

The restaurant is impeccable and food fair. Bloody Mary’s are great. Service seems a little disconnected.

Too Many Disappointments

By aender |

Heard mixed things about Somerset prior to us dining there a few days ago. The place is very nice with a three-story atrium with seating on the main floor and also on the second floor wrapping around the atrium. We checked in about 10 minutes prior our reservations and were told there was a wait. At exactly 7PM we were seated at a table upstairs that I know for sure had been empty since we arrive, but the hostess made us wait. This is something I normally see in Las Vegas where a restaurant will not seat early even if the table is ready. Don’t ask me why as to me it makes no sense. I had asked for a booth and they did put us at one. We decided to stick with trying a number of appetizers so as to get a better idea of the food by sampling more items, but got the sense our server wasn’t too happy with us not ordering the more expensive entrees. The Food – it was either a complete failure or a winner, but not much in between. The Losers – Beet salad was just not good at all and had very strange flavors that to us just did not work. The Baby Lettuce salad, which had large pieces of Radicchio that was too large and need to be of the same size as the other greens, again was a huge disappointment. The Somerset Sunday was just weird and took only a few bites (case in point about service is our server saw we barely touched the Sunday yet made no attempt to address it). Winners – Duck gnoccetti, which had a rich full flavor and only complaint was the kale served with it was again too large and needed to be in smaller pieces. The butterscotch pudding was to die for. One item them fell in between was the corn and salt cod fritter, which was average. Service was less than desirable for this price point as I had ordered iced tea and had to ask the server for refills. The back waiter or busser was amazing as he was working the room non-stop. Will we be back, yes but to order only those things we know are good and to avoid those that were not.

Decent

By L H |

Pleasant, lofty space w/ nicely done modern decor. Ricotta dumplings divine, kale salad and charred broccoli very good, salmon preparation uninspired/slightly dry, corn & cod fritters bland/overdone with too much mayonnaise in the sauce. Typically, it's more fun to eat at the bar, often with more attentive service, but the bartenders this night were pretty unengaged - the hospitality vibe was noticeably missing.

Wonderful cafe venue; great service; great value

By Travelingman074 |

This is the kind of place where you don't know if the lovely setting is so nice because they have to compensate for bad food. Not the case here. We had salads and sandwiches that were clearly made to order; fresh ingredients; and bread, baked on premises that was simply devine. If you want to avoid cards, avoid this restaurant because you will not be able to resist the bread with nicely salted butter. The wine list is good, with a nice selection of wine by the glass as well as full bottles.

Dinner saved

By HiblerJ |

We were traveling with 2 young boys and staying next door at the Viceroy. The hotel said we didn’t need to make a reservation, but when we arrived for dinner there was a wait. We stated that the hotel didn’t think it’d be a problem and they apologized for the inconvenience and seated us immediately! We had a great meal. Only flaw was the server gave our boys a sharp steak knife. They are 5 & 8. Def didn’t need a sharp knife to wield around!

Okay food, way too expensive.

By debs |

My parents were visiting and I thought they'd like to try someplace new. They eat out a lot and travel to lots of places, so they're experienced in comparing/contrasting of restaurants. They thought this dinner was stupidly expensive!! I was embarrassed I took them there. It really was way to expensive. You get small portions of good food, not fabulous food. Nothing special to warrant the very high price tag.

Dinner date - first time at Somerset

By CrazyCanucks2013 |

Great food and service. They also have balcony seating which would be great if you have a large group. Somellelier on staff who is very friendly and helpful.

Brunch on Sunday

By LizBethob |

6 of us met for brunch today at Somerset. This was the first time for all of us and it came highly recommended by a good friend who reviews restaurants. Two people ordered the chicken and French toast and they loved it. Two ordered omeletts and liked them very much: I ordered the avocado toast and the last person ordered the duck burrito — very good. Everyone was pleased with their food; coffee was good quality; a couple of people ordered bloody Mary’s and liked them. The service was very good. The friend who recommended the place mentioned that it can get loud, so I had asked for a booth and I’m happy I did. It’s very loud in the restaurant when it’s busy, so the booth helped us hear one another, but with some difficulty. On the whole, we all liked the restaurant, but it does get loud.

Spontaneous dinner

By twyss |

We came here without reservation on a Thursday evening as the restaurant looked cool from outside and more inviting than afew other places around it. After approx. 20 minutes at the bar we got a table and were happy with the food (2 different plates of pasta). Service was very attentive and the ambience elegant and classy.

Great choice of food and lovely service. I had breakfast in there twice and a salad for lunch, it was beautiful. Would definitely recommend.

Expensive but very good; very good but expensive

By Eric L |

Went with my wife for an early-ish date night dinner on a Friday evening. Chose Somerset over some other similar places because of recommendations we personally received. Ambiance - A+. Incredible, unique, fancy but tasteful decor. The chandelier was amazing. The noise level lively but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other talk, even in the bar area on the main floor. We were sat in a booth upstairs which was very comfortable for the two of us. There was a decent range of "casually dressed" to "semi-formal" guests. Service - B+. It was tough to tell whether it's commonplace in Chicago for waiters/waitresses to slow-play certain tables but after dining out three times over the weekend, I think it might just be how many restaurants operate. The strange kicker was the waitress insisting on taking our appetizer, salad and entree order all at once (rather than intermittently), which was a bit of a turn off. When you're hungry and you want food but don't exactly know what you want for your main course -- that's what appetizers and salads are for, right?? Anyway, drinks were promptly taken and delivered and there was no shortage of water. The food was timely delivered and our interaction with the waitress was perfectly fine (I blame our impatience on "hangry-ness". Food - A. I really think I could grade this out as an A+. The bread and butter were very very good. The beet salad was very well seasoned and they were kind enough to let us share. The star of my meal was the crudo and fennel appetizer. Perfect combination of textures and flavors. The cod fritters were good but the aioli takes it up a notch. Lastly, I was impressed by the squid ink pasta and slightly disappointed in the calamari. The best thing my wife had was undoubtedly the ricotta dumplings. Adjectives to describe the dumplings included: "clouds" and "teeth pillows". Value - Considering where we were (Chicago), I understand why many other reviewers also believe that this restaurant was expensive. The portions are not significant for the price but I think what bumped the price to that "expensive" level was the drink menu. In hindsight, buying a bottle to share would have been cheaper than two single glasses and two cocktails. I get it - booze isn't cheap, but it can run your bill up faster than you can take a shot of whiskey. That all being said, I think the food was very fairly priced. I'll just have one fewer glass of liquid courage next time. All in all, we had a wonderful dining experience and I spent what I expected to spend at a restaurant like Somerset. Would recommend dinner and would definitely go back to try brunch next time.

Lovely place

By Wen-D K |

An incredible lunch out started with our amazing waitstaff, with the manager Trish leading the way. Trying to decide between two choices for myself, I made my selection, as did my friend- and Trish then gifts us with the other selection, as well! And OMG - the food was fabulous - Unique flavors and great presentation. We sat outside, and with no pressure to leave, I’m afraid we took full advantage of the glorious day, extending our delicious lunch well into the afternoon. It was a delicious and memorable experience.

Gorgeous restaurant tucked away next to Viceroy Hotel

By Jennerjoseph |

First, check to see if Hannah is working. She is a hostess there, and she is amazing! Great service!! If you can get a table on the patio, on a nice evening in Chicago, the ambiance is the best in the city. The food is also wonderful!! Can you tell that I love this restaurant??? Yep, I do !

Best new restaurant in Chicago

By Giovanni A |

This is by far the best restaurant we've experienced as a couple! We love the Boka RG! And this is definitely up to par to their standard of hip, trendy and excellence! Do yourself a favor and try the oysters!

Delicious + great service + lovely outdoor patio

By okigirl1 |

We went to Somerset the second day after it reopened this month. We had never been previously so I can't compare it to before, but we were impressed. Our server knew her food and drink, the food was superb, and the patio is lovely. We were very pleased with our dinner.

Drinks after Dinner

By Alex B |

I came here with a friend after dinner and we sat at the bar. The bartenders were so kind and friendly. The drinks here were a little pricey but worth it. The ambiance at this restaurant is so great.

A bad experience

Disappointing service - when we sat down our table was rocking all over - we asked someone to fix it as eating would be impossible. A member of the wait staff handed us a plastic piece used to level tables - meaning we were expected to fix the table. When the one piece didn't work we asked for another table. You would think we asked for their first-born male child! We were grudgingly given another table. Adding insult to injury both our dishes (eggs for me, french toast for my wife) were served at room temperature. It's too bad as we thoroughly enjoyed our room at the Viceroy Hotel

Pretty restaurant, a somewhat limited menu

By Frank M |

We had high expectations of this restaurant, reading one website billing it as the best restaurant in Chicago. The restaurant fell short of that billing, but it was very good. I thought the menu was a little eclectic, although many foodies would really enjoy it. We found the service a little slow although it was a busy Friday night after Thanksgiving, so that could be expected. All and all, I'd recommend studying the menu before committing to go.

Delicious food....OUTSTANDING service. Definitely eat the Beet Tartare

By Trent C |

My husband and I had dinner at Somerset. The food was nothing short of delicious and the service was first-rate! Emily, our server, was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. She and all the service staff were incredibly attentive. I should also suggest having the beet tartare. It was delicious. . .worth going back for on its own - seriously. It sounds so unconventional and it is; but it is delicious! Beyond the delicious food...I had the spare ribs and my husband had the branzino. Both were delicious. The cocktails were equally good. Our compliments to everyone who made our experience so great!

Outstanding Wedding Reception

By HannahENWilliams |

My husband and I held our wedding reception dinner at Somerset and couldn't be happier with our decision! Our wedding hotel was the Viceroy Chicago and our cocktail hour was upstairs at Devereaux, and all 3 venues blew us away. We planned our wedding reception with Betsy, who was extremely kind and helpful. She walked us through every option and thoroughly addressed all of our questions. When it came time for the actual wedding dinner in Somerset's private Regatta Room, everything was perfect. Some of our guests had severe allergies and we were extremely impressed with the attention to detail their entire staff had to ensure the entire night was allergen free and safe for all of our guests. Our servers were unbelievably accommodating and attentive, we felt such immense hospitality from the entire team. As for the food, every course was delicious and showcased a wide variety of dishes. For the kids in attendance, the servers took separate orders with kid-friendly options and also gave them ice cream at the end (in addition to the other desserts and cake)! The pastry chef made an outstanding wedding cake, which the team of servers handled beautifully. All of the leftover cake and additional desserts were individually packaged and given to guests at the end to take home. Lastly, we were generously gifted a bottle of champagne at the end of the night to keep the celebration going! Overall, we were so thrilled with our choice to use Somerset for our wedding. Their staff, food and hospitality was impeccable, they helped make our weddding day incredibly special and memorable. I would highly recommend Somerset to anyone, not only for a quick meal, but for a special event!

Great Location, excellent meal

Very much enjoyed Sunday nite dinner with friends. Recommend the scallops and the fried chicken special was superb. Good service, nice high energy ambiance

Great visit for cocktails

By Nick B |

Splendid experience for cocktails to start our evening off and meeting up with friends. Friendly staff and manager made a birthday pre-dinner drink an awesome kick off to the evening. Able to sit outside and chat and enjoy a relaxed Friday evening.

Unique, Fun and Delicious

By Beth F |

Somerset Club Chicago is brand new and so unique I almost don’t know how to describe it. It is a creation of Chef Lee Wolen (of Boka) that combines a sophisticated and creative menu of seasonal ingredients and unique dishes (worth the trip alone) with a very hip and happening social and bar scene. Adding to the unique experience is the decor, designed to combine mid-century modern yacht club chic with very Modern accents. Oddly enough it works! The ambiance is loud and very happening, yet the dining space on the upstairs loft-style space is very pleasant with an appropriate noise level. The service is EXCELLENT- the staff is attentive, gracious and just plain nice. I was hoping to meet the Chef and our server made that happen - It made our night. Chef Wolen is a little “🎵He’s so shy, that sweet little boy who caught my eye”- he should be really proud of this place. The food is delicious. We have only had dinner (Somerset also has breakfast and lunch). The Kale and Brussels Sprout salad was light, very flavorful and tasty. The smoked Beet Tartare is off the charts delicious and unique. The Dry Aged Ribeye may be the best steak I’ve ever eaten- perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Squid Ink Alla Chitarra was also deeply flavorful and delicious. We asked our server for wine pairing and we really enjoyed his selections. The desserts we tried were decadent and “lick the plate “ delicious, which I have found to be unusual in high end seasonal ingredient restaurants. We will be back!

Great service, excellent preparations

Hotel recommended through the concierge. New restaurant, only 1 month old and worth the time and reservation. Young, hip, and food was amazing! Preparations of fish were incredible. Menu was no overwhelming but everything tasted was done to perfection.

Great Place to Host Work Event

By Paige E |

We held a work event at Somerset this November. The staff went above and beyond for our party of 100+. Big thank you Randy and Samandra for their attention to detail and professionalism throughout the planning process and night of. We couldn't have asked for a better place to host our dinner.

A Wonderful Eating Spot.

By Conny Wylie |

The Somerset is an exciting, Michelin starred, neighborhood dining experience at the Viceroy Hotel that is tucked away in the historic Gold Coast. The eatery serves seasonal American cuisine ranging from wagyu tartare to house-made pasta.....I just loved my meal of Crispy Branzine. The dining mood of the establishment is enhanced with a split-level space, an airy atmosphere and complimented by an outdoor patio. A top rated restaurant in the city, it is a wonderful eating spot.

Breakfast is great

By Tonypose |

We had breakfast here after staying overnight in the city. It is a modern sleek restaurant with really good service. The food was excellent as well from oatmeal to a cheddar and ham omelet. Great coffee as well. I’ll be back.

Excellent Restaurant in the Heart of The Gold Coast

By eli_chi_mad |

I am very excited about this review because this place is becoming one of my favorite in the Gold Coast. I am not a big fan of restaurants at hotels but this one from the Boka Restaurant Group really has it ALL....from Devereaux (Rooftop lounge set on the 18th floor), to a secret room with a chef's table, a beautifully renovated Art Deco space with different bars which sets a great atmosphere for a great night. The bartenders are very professional (Jeremy is awesome) and the drinks are amazing including my favorite the "tuxedo" (for those who like gin, bitters & sherry with some gouda cheese on the side).

Nice atmosphere delicious food

By Debbie01501 |

I recently ate here with a group of business associates. I hade the grilled beef short ribs. Others had the salmon and seared scallops. Everything was delicious! The chocolate layer cake was delicious too! It came with extra chocolate/carmel to drop over your cake. The staff was so sweet. It had a great open atmosphere. I highly recommend this place.

Disappointing

By jg0356 |

The ambiance is pretty good but the food was, at best, disappointing. They had some pretty good wines on the list at a reasonable mark-up but when my guests asked for another drink at 9:15 they were told that they had called last orders at 9pm. Given the prices and mark up on liquor, if not all drinks, I would say that that was a bit crazy but, in any case, they should have told us. This was our poorest restaurant experience in Chicago for the week.

Amazing!!!

By Paola R |

This restaurant is off the charts, unparalleled and truly awesome. Seriously and incredible gastronomic experience. A royal feast.

Great Breakfast!

By Luxtvl |

Truly enjoyed our breakfast/brunch at this spot. Must try the chicken and waffles if you are up for a filling breakfast.

Another Big Win for BOKA Group

By Michael U |

Shut out on The Lobby due to Chicago traffic and bad weather in late 2013 it was not until September 2014 that Lee Wolen’s Cuisine was tasted at BOKA, news that he’d since launched an “All-American Supper Club” called Somerset immediately placing it atop the bucket list for a return in July and the fact that the two-story space on North State Street was one of the few open for dinner on Independence Day further sweetening the deal. Located inside The Viceroy Hotel and thus serving three meals daily, an outdoor patio looking out on the Near North Side proving popular despite heat and humidity, it was instead opting for an inside seat near the downstairs window that a hip male server presented the menu and Ice Water, a declination of Cocktails accepted without question and followed by some dining suggestions. Less than 25% full at 5:00pm on a Holiday, the well-appointed upstairs completely empty but worth visiting to explore the art or simply wash up, it was shortly after returning to the two-top that warm Rolls were presented alongside creamy Butter, the addition of Dill unanticipated but pleasant while the Bread’s wispy texture was every bit as good as the original in Boston. Prone to seasonal change but already developing some signatures, Wolen’s well-known Chicken for two ordered by groups on both sides, it was in favor of variety that dinner began with what can best be described as Brandade Hush Puppies alongside vibrant Aioli, each sweet yet briny bite as good as the last though a plate of Gnudi served simultaneously still managed to steal the spotlight thanks to quality Produce and impeccable seasoning that bridged late Spring and early Summer. Moving next to more housemade Pasta plus a dish designated as a Side, the Cornmeal thick with Cheese and Cream as good as Scott Conant’s famous version but perhaps too rich for just one, it was in alternating bites that this was enjoyed alongside al dente Ribbons brightened by the flavors of Cioppino, a half-portion perfect for solos who wish to save room for Dessert which is most certainly advisable. Turning things over at this point to Meg Galus, the head Pastry Chef at BOKA pulling triple duty these days as she also heads up sweets at Swift & Sons, it was making difficult decisions amongst six choices which vary slightly from Lunch to Dinner that two were ordered, a deconstructed Buckwheat Carrot Cake managing its high-wire act of Citrus and Spice nicely while Butterscotch Pudding doubled down on texture with Pecan Praline and crunchy grains while tempering sweetness by way of slightly bitter Ice Cream.

Trapped at The Viceroy? Consider yourself lucky

By Robert M |

In a city (and neighborhood) with fabulous food, you might not seek this place out. And I would not make a special trip here. Hotel guests and locals keep this place hopping; the roof bar is to die for. A nice and spacious outdoor patio but why sit there? Nothing to look at. Meanwhile downstairs, you have a great staff and a great kitchen and an uninspiring space. The staff goes out of their way to tell you they are not affiliated with the hotel. They will also skillfully guide you to the perfect food/libation combination. Tis a well heeled crowd of regulars here because of whom you will be ignored. But not for long. They really want you to have a great experience (I ate there every night for a week of necessity). This is a gentrifying section of Chicago. If you find yourself on the Gold Coast looking for casual qualty, check them out. If you are older than 30, forget the roof.

Simple menu. Delicious meal!

By Grace W |

Visiting friends in Chicago, they took us to this newish neighborhood restaurant based on one previous meal. We were all wonderfully satisfied with our meals, except for dessert (more later). My husband and I split the ample Spring Lettuce Salad to start. Loved the wonderful blend of pea pods and varietal lettuce topped with tangy feta and champagne vinaigrette. Our dining companions were equally satisfied with their shared kale and Brussels sprouts salads. All of our main courses were surprisingly delicious. I couldn’t believe the burst of flavor within my ricotta dumplings. Just another name for gnocchi, but definitely not just another gnocchi. Unfortunately the low point for us were the 2 shared desserts. They were not terrible at all. But our mouths were watering awaiting decadent treats and sadly our taste buds were left wanting much more. Both the Milk Chocolate Budino and the Chocolate Layer Cake missed the “oh my my” high flavor bar we were hoping for. But, this disappointing end didn’t leave a bitter taste at all. It was still a wonderful dining experience. I know our hosts will be back. And if we lived here, so would we!

Supper Friendly Staff

By djglencer |

We stayed next door at the Viceroy and this is an awesome place to just hang out. Multiple floors and bar with homages to the hotels original roots and interior design. Great service as well.

Celiac Gluten Free Dinner was good.

By Barrow St |

For celiacs: No gluten free items marked on the newly launched dinner menu. The server was diligent in wanting to get the GF right. Had the salmon without the phyllo as my gluten free entree — well cooked in a wonderful caper sauce. Barada cheese consistency and flavor was disappointing but the surrounding greens were delicious and came with hunks of gorgeous house made bread (not gf) and GF white bread toast (tasteless —- there’s so many other options would hope they’d switch to something better—-and appreciated). Broccolini was stringy, hard to eat and had a wonderful yuzu lemon zest flavor. In general: Limited and flavorful sounding dinner menu. Request a table looking out onto the large patio. Look for the Viceroy Hotel vs. Somerset Restaurant when navigating. Convenient Gold Coast location across the street from the Away luggage store a few blocks north of Oak Street, usually easy parking on the street, welcoming vibe, contemporary, airy interior design, fireplace and couch area looked nice for a drink/coffee. Excellent service. Nice big booths are a fun place for drinks and small plates to share.

Small portions, indifferent servers

By HAV847 |

Nice location makes a person want to really love this place. Unfortunately, it can't happen. Small portions, super salty entrees and ridiculous half moon booths (which restrict any sort of talking) prevailed. Do not take your server's advice and order the salmon. For $28, it was super salty and came with (no lie) one piece of a vegetable. Meager portion of salmon was appalling. Lamb dishes were a bit better, but had a side that the entire found inedible. Sea Bass was fine, but again---a piece of fish for $38? No sides? At a place that isn't on the river or West Loop? Don't think so! Someone needs to redo both the indoor seating and the menu--ASAP.

St. Germain in Chicago, For Foodies, For the Scene,

By Jeannie B |

This is a beautiful people place in a good way more like the 7th in Paris rather than the 11th. It is set in the "viagra triangle" which in the day had many beautiful people places now they are more Chicago classics. My knowledgeable, well-traveled foodie friends love the food here. The chef is very talented and one of the top chefs in Chicago. This is not a casual, cozy kind of place it is a walk off the street into a bright, airy, happening bar area. For food and dinner, definitely make reservations. The bar can be a "be seen" place and busy. Everything the restaurant group does is quality. A great place to bring clients for a drink or dinner. I had the beef tartar which was good. I did not try anything else on the menu so I cannot personally say good or bad. I probably won't be back because it is a little too happening for me. It is the bright shiny penny in an area that needed some new blood. Prices are high in this neighborhood because it is the neighborhood.

Unfortunately……

By Mike H |

…….there are so many things wrong with this place, despite the guaranteed custom from the very good Viceroy Hotel (qv) next door. After two dinners and three breakfasts I think I can speak from experience. First, at the first dinner a surly chap greeted us, though the greeting didn’t include the words ‘good evening’ or ‘welcome’. If you work in the hospitality industry, my friend, be hospitable. Despite a reservation for three we were shown to a table laid for four. Our waiter showed no inclination to remove the extra setting, so I did it myself. Secondly, the menu makes no allowances for diabetics. Every single dish in all three courses included sugar, even the sashimi which was served in a liquid laced with honey. There was not even the option of a fruit dessert. I’m sure I could have had a sugar-free side dish of Brussel sprouts, but that is not much fun on its own. Thirdly, at breakfast it is clear that the cook - not a chef, evidently - thinks slopping two poached eggs into a bowl along with a large quantity of the water they were poached in is the correct way to serve a fairly simple item. He or she are wrong. So please avoid, though if you are a guest at the Hotel, it is probably hard to do so.

Great Outdoor Seating on State St.

By Evolution26 |

Located at the base of the Viceroy hotel, this 'American' restaurant offers a diverse menu with great outdoor seating on State St. The oysters are a must-try. The mignonette is balanced. The passionfruit bellini is spot on for sunny days in the sun.

Great ambiance but food is just ok

By RajeevNagpal |

This newly opened chic restaurant in downtown Chicago has a contemporary and a very esthetic layout with a large seating capacity. However it’s menu, though it looks great is not very healthy. In the salad section we ordered two salads for a party of 4. These were in the appetizer section. Kale salad and squash salad were so rich that we were filled up and had no appetite. They were full of cheese and butter and had creamy squash. Calories probably uncountable. They should not be called salads. Vegetable crudte was good Salmon and halibut were also pan seared with butter sauce and hence the whole idea of eating healthy was lost. Great ambiance but unhealthy food and also not very delicious.

Unexpected Excellence

By jvalerio |

We got this reservation on Open Table on a whim. Although long time Chicago residents, we weren't exactly sure of where we were going in the restaurant row where State Street intersects with Rush. We discovered a four story historic building set back from State, with a modernist tower rising above the older building set well back from the street. We valeted our car - a must in this area. There was a wonderful outdoor seating area - the older buildings setback created a deep outdoor dining venue that was very inviting. On this summer night, the temperature was cool and we were seated inside. The room had a wonderful high ceiling that was very gracious. My wife and I were seated at a wonderfully large semicircular booth. Our waiter advised us on selecting a sauvignon blanc for my wife and a wonderful bourbon for me. We split an order of smoked salmon on toast as a starter and then split their heirloom tomato salad. Both starters had a wonderful taste with a little kick. My wife ordered the asparagus risotto, and I ordered the mediteranian sea bass as our main courses. The risotto came immersed in a wonderful broth that was light and avoided the choking buttery recipe that is more common. My sea bass was equally exceptional, perfectly cooked with a wonderful light crust - which was magical. Although I try to read the reviews of restaurants in Chicago, I missed this one. It was a wonderful discovery. Just for reference, Somerset is part of the Viceroy Hotel. Oh, and our waiter was exceptional.

Yummy Brunch!

By karalyn84 |

We had a fantastic brunch at the Somerset with really FUN drinks served in massive copper pineapples! The menu is large & creative with items like Beet Tartare (yes BEET) and Gooey coffee cake. Shareable boozy brunch punch & nice wine list! Go check it out!

Great experience

Great atmosphere and service. Laura the manager and Erik the bartender are true gems in the service industry.

Great Spot for Breakfast - Even Better for Dinner

By michiganmaven |

We recently enjoyed 3 lovely and delicious breakfasts at Somerset as well as a fantastic dinner! For breakfast, we sat on the street level and enjoyed looking out the windows and watching the city go by. Service was perfect. The breakfast menu is creative and fresh and fairly priced for a large city hotel. On Saturday night, we sat upstairs at a comfortable table that overlooked the main floor. There is no shortage of atmosphere here! The room is filled with light and energy and holds many design surprises along the perimeters. It is sophisticated and fun at the same time. The food was clearly inspired by the fall farmers markets. We loved the simple Vegetable Crudite plate served on a round lazy-susan of sorts filled with the best the Midwest has to offer - heirloom carrots, cauliflower, radishes served with 3 delicious dips and wonderful seeded crackers. We also enjoyed the Smoked Beet Tartar served with warm pita. The cumin flavored yogurt provided a tangy accent to the slightly sweet beets. Both these appetizers are great to share! The fall theme continued with a deliciously rich Duck Leg Gnocchetti. Fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed the wild salmon, cooked to perfection and served with warm slightly, sweet grapes and crunchy walnuts. The contrasting textures of the nuts and grapes with the salmon and the cauliflower puree were perfectly executed and delicious. We finished the meal with the chocolate bar and spicy chai tea ice cream. Again - an explosion of flavors and great textural interest yet simple and satisfying. We were impressed at how well the restaurant was running despite having recently opened. Service was excellent at dinner, breakfast and at the bar! Great cocktails as well. We will be back next time we are in Chicago.

Just too cool.

By Grace F |

Loud, over salted uninspiring food, uncomfortable seating on mushroom style slippery bar stools if not lucky enough to get a table, did I say loud thumping bass, in early evening? Won't bother making a trip back. Designed for the "cool" kids, not just normal people. Too many better options in neighborhood.

Elegant dinner

By Aaron G |

I was excited to try Somerset in the new Viceroy hotel. It was a little pricey, but the food didn't disappoint. -Sleek and modern atmosphere. It's bilevel--the main floor has a more bustling feel and upstairs is more relaxed and offers nice views of the restaurant space. -There's cool artwork on the walls and I like that they preserved the old Cedar Hotel neon sign from the more casual haunt that used to be at this location. -The hostess and and bartender I had were extremely nice and I was very comfortable with a drink as I waited for my party to arrive. -We were seated at a comfortable table upstairs. -Server was friendly and attentive. -Fresh bread rolls were warm, buttery and delicious. -Striped jack crudo with kohlrabi was light and had a nice citrus kick--good way to wake up our palate and start the meal. It also went great with my crisp glass of Sancerre. -Baby lettuce salad was simple, but very fresh and tasty. -Whole fish was fantastic--perfectly cooked with a nice char. You could eat skin and all with no fishiness. -Duck leg gnochetti had great deep flavor, but I wish the pasta was a little more tender. Overall, it was a great experience. I'll definitely be back next time I want an elegant dinner in the area.

Blissfully competent

By snarliest1 |

Did a bunch of research before choosing a place to eat with both 70somethings and teens. The setting was hip without obnoxiousness. Sitting in an alcove with cool mid century seating meant it was quiet enough for conversation. Service was warm, enthusiastic, attentive. Cocktails were creative without being weird for weird’s sake. And the food! Two different Chicago friends recommended the smoked beet tartar and it really was all that. But everything we ordered was very good-to-great — nothing hugely daring, but fine ingredients + fine technique + pretty plating and enough twists to keep things interesting for the foodies w/o threatening the less adventurous diners. Super-careful about food allergies too. Just perfect for our group’s widely varying needs. Bravo.

Location, Location Location

By Jonesy2013 |

I had old Chicago friends in town so it was fun to visit the old “Melvin B’s” with them. Somerset is very pretty with great open ambiance. The hosts very friendly and menu great for brunch. Our server was a little slow and we had to ask him a few times for service. Other than that a great location and not to be missed!

Good food

By beeps2 |

Good food. I had the fried chicken for brunch. it was great. awesome atmosphere, but the service was terrible. Bloody mary is great.

Good Restaurant

By dcsae |

We visited Somerset for my daughter's birthday. I have to say that the atmosphere was nice and the food was great. The service was a little "standoffish". I would probably return, but there are so many great places to eat downtown, I'm not sure that this will become a favorite.

Great choice for brunch

By Barbora V. |

This place is in art deco style. Its just beautiful. We had brunch on Saturday there. It was crowded, but we got nice table by the window and could fit the stroller nicely :-) Food is American and great, they have a various selection of brunch menu, cocktails, coffee. Staff was nice and helpful.

FANTASTIC MEAl

By 293lou |

My wife and I had dinner here tonight, and we had just an amazing dinner and service. The salad was perfectly seasoned with a perfect blend of special greens they used were crispy, and never got watery or soggy. The best was yet to come as we were told their cheeseburger was one of the best in the city and BOY THESE BURGERS didn't disappoint! Could be one of the best cheeseburgers we have ever had. The chef said they use a special Truffle oil on the burger itself to add flavor. It WAS! And the house fries with garlic aioli they gave us with the fries were like the flavor on crack! Can't wait to go back again. Cudos to Su Chef John and our server Kenny. Both gave us an amazing experience!

Buzzy busy restaurant

By Harry H |

Was delighted to be recommended this buzzy contemporary eateries with lively bar. Great selections of wines both USA and European. Rather a lot of dishes with garlic I had the pork chop as a main and the delicious kale and sprout salad which could have fed a whole family. Recommended Good service as well

Great Food and Service

By KrisK_8 |

We recently went for dinner here on a Saturday evening after hearing about it from some friends at work. Definitely make reservations as the place is very busy and deservedly so. Food here is great. Very creative and well prepared. The bread you start with is super good. The Octopus and the Kale & Brussels sprout salad were both very tasty, but for us the best thing was the whole roasted chicken. Not only was it delicious, but at $60, which includes 2 side dishes, it's a steal on this menu. The miss for us was dessert. We tried the eggnog sundae which we thought was overly sweet so after a few bites, you kind of get tired of eating it. Service is excellent. Server was warm and friendly as well as very knowledgeable. The sommelier was especially helpful for us. The decor of the room itself is great. Seems like kind of an old sports club or something. Very lively feeling. Tables not too squished together. All in all, a great evening and we'll definitely make a return trip.

Good with speed

By hnshopper |

Good food. Service was a bit pushy. We wanted to catch up and talk but they kept interrupting with desire to clean off tables. Overall good experience just a bit rushed.

Great for a Special Occasion

By Mary B |

We went for our wedding anniversary, and we were treated to custom menus congratulating us on the occasion. Every staff member with whom we interacted also congratulated us. Therese nice service touches complemented a fabulous meal. My husband had the scallops and I had the lamb. Topping off the delicious entrees was a butterscotch pudding dessert. I'd love to go back!!

Upscale and Hip

By 2again |

I enjoyed my meal at this fine restaurant. We had a variety of the entrees and a couple of appetizers. Everything was fresh and healthy. They personalizes a dessert for me for my birthday which was very fun. I gave only four/five for a rating because of the price point, but if you dine in downtown Chicago, I guess you should expect a high price point. We ubered, but I did notice they have valet parking.

Great for special dietary needs!

By HenryW |

The staff and kitchen are proactive in accommodating special dietary needs. Our table's orders of small plates delivered well prepared and beautifully presented dishes - all at a rather elevated price. The "supper" special of roast chicken with farro and veggies was excellent, and an exceptional value considering the other menu prices. Wait staff was also excellent!

Well done

By Ebude |

Excellent atmosphere, casual cool setting. Kale salad is a nice mix of “crunch” and flavor with no ingredient overpowering it. Salmon was perfect with an nice zucchini purée. Highly recommended.

Boka restaurant group is ALWAYS a sure thing!!

By Jkarr11 |

Beautiful restaurant on the ground floor of the Viceroy hotel. Simplistic, stylish, modern, clean décor. Great outdoor patio, one of the best in the city I would say. Right in the heart of the Rush street activity. We had a beet salad which was fantastic but a little too heavy handed with the dressing. My husband had the pasta with Bolognese sauce. You can definitely taste that the pasta is made in house. My husband absolutely loved it. I had the salmon, decent portion, cooked to perfection...moist with crispy skin...delish!!! Dessert was a culinary delight! Not only spectacular visually but really well crafted. Great wine list. Fantastic bar. Staff is outstanding, perfectly attentive. Everything the Boka restaurant group touches turns to gold. They know how to do it right. We will most definitely make this a regular spot.

Overpriced and Mediocre

By Mike C |

overpriced very mediocre food, very slow service with tip automatically added for a party of 7. so many better choices in the area.

Gorgeous place but poor service

By Awarmstrong12 |

We wanted to love this place ... but so many things happened that make me incredibly disappointed and we won’t return or recommend. When we sat at table - my son sat down, put feet down and landed in a huge pile of tomatoes and ketchup. Shoes weren’t ruined but it was a mess ! Soup came after meal, fries burnet hard and a tad cold, a side order forgotten. There is more but you get the point. The manager did check in and profusely apologized - the soup was credited but that was it. One high point — the chopped salad was great ! An all around disappointing experience. Fortunately our stay at The Viceroy was very different. It was spectacular !

Must go

By Joaquin |

We didn't know it was only brunch on sundays. Still, the food was awesome. The French toast and chicken was phenomenal. Well go again soon

Honest, creative, and tasty too

By mkoChicago |

Great lunch....no rush and very attentive service. My party of four had the seared tuna salad, tagliatelle, crispy chicken sandwich and the somerset cheeseburger. Skillfully prepared and each dish had a unique twist. The star of the show, that will keep me coming back is the smoked beet tartare. I have no words....

Good quality but limited choices.

By ChiefWolf |

We had breakfast several times and the quality was good each time. But the choices are somewhat limited. Also, the potatoes were very cooked to the point of being burnt. Very friendly Staff and it’s right next to the Viceroy hotel so no need to go outdoors in the cold weather.

Fun, lively, good food in excellent location.

By Susan S |

Friends eat there often but this was my first visit......I will be back. Very nice interior with cute booths and none of the tables were too close together. They also have outdoor seating but not in late October. I ordered a grain bowl. It was delicious but included a lot of Jalapeño slices on the top. Very hot and spicy. I removed them but after that the dish was excellent with a gingery salad dressing and a nice combination of grains and vegetables. We shared a chocolate croissant. Waitstaff could have been more attentive but we enjoyed the atmosphere and food.

So good, I went twice

By kgmama2go |

My husband and I went to dinner with friends who live in Chicago. The service and food were both great. The server was very patient while we settled in to chat a bit before ordering and made great recommendations. The food was so good that I went back the next day for lunch on my own. Get the squid ink pasta-it’s wonderful! Service was just as good at lunch as it had been for dinner the previous night. I will definitely return the next time I’m in Chicago!

The worst hotel restaurant experience by far.

By travel550 |

I decided to grab a quick bite while waiting for my room ready at Viceroy. I was told by the hostess I could grab a seat at the bar area, and as I did l, one of the servers started wiping the bar in front of me without even glancing at me and then once he was done wiping, finally asked if I checked in with hostess. I responded I did and would like to grab a bite, and he just walked away completely ignoring me. While I’m seating at the bar and continued to be ignored for 15 mins, I finally waived in another hostess to get a menu (I should have just walked away at this point). Less than an appealing looking salmon flatbread plate showed up in literally less than 3 min after ordering, without silverware or napkin, which did nothing to improve my mood. The server was going to just dump the plate in front of me and walk away if I didn’t ask for cutlery. Adding to the disappointment, the bread was stale, the smoked salmon topping underwhelming. After all, it took them only few mins to put this $20 plate together. Even considering this was 12:30pm busy brunch time on Sunday, the service was the worst I’ve ever experienced in any 5 star hotel restaurants. And food was just bad. Come on Viceroy, get your act together.

Brunch with a punch!

On the recommendation of EJ Concierge, we had brunch this past Sunday at the Somerset, inside the Viceroy Hotel. We sat at the bar until our table was ready and found the staff to be upbeat and very accommodating. The brunch itself is an interesting combination of standard fare with some interesting surprises. Our server was knowledgeable and provided us with useful information for making our dining decisions. The service was excellent and the food came out perfect. Also, there was no rush to get us out, although there were a lot of people waiting to get in.

Nice surprise!

By BML111 |

Stopped for drinks and a light bite to share. We loved the high ceilings and feel of the bar area. We had a glass of wine and ordered the vegetable flatbread. We were not expecting the generous portion that was presented. It was zucchini, peaches, pumpkin seed pesto and ricotta on a thick fluffy crust, unlike any flatbread we’ve have ever seen. And the flavors- AMAZING. The portion size would have been enough as an entree for one person. We would go back just for the flatbread but hope to try dinner sometime soon.

Delicious Food

A great find on the Gold Coast! Every dish was delicious (thanks Nick for your great recommendations!). Perfect for everyone - saw solo diners, date night couples, families and large groups.

Progressive cuisine in a warm atmosphere

By LaDavi16 |

Located in the Viceroy Hotel and centrally located on the Gold Coast, this restaurant is rock solid. We loved the wines by the glass and the shared chicken dinner (it was more than enough for 2). The service was exceptional. Mannie our server was gracious and efficient. This was our second visit. I anticipate that Somerset will be a regular stop.

Nice ambiance and service

By Diane K |

My husband and I enjoyed our breakfast. Service and ambiance were both very good. We especially liked seeing the old Cedar Hotel sign restored and on displayed inside. Nice new restaurant in the Viceroy Hotel which did a great job in keeping the facade of the old hotel after building their new modern hotel.

Pretty Good

By HubbellGardiner |

If everything had been up to the standard of the Brussels sprouts, I would have given five stars. But it wasn’t. First we had a reservation which I showed to the hostess. She asked are you sure you do? Well, yes. Then even though the restaurant wasn’t full, we were seated at a bad table near the door. I asked could sit farther away and she consented. Then the waiter was friendly certainly but we were only halfway through our apps when our entrees came. Overall the food was very good except for the bread plate. The sourdough was good though.

My favorite Breakfast in Chicago

This restaurant is so lovely--great location, beautiful decor, and the food was delicious! Stayed at the Thompson nearby by this was my fav breakfast in the area by far! I'll be back!

Excellent Meal in A Comfortable Space

By Normal_DJO |

Really enjoyed our dining experience this past Saturday. Had the half chicken special and it was one of the better chicken dishes I’ve ever had. Also like how the Viceroy Hotel and Somerset have integrated the past history of the space, including keeping the old “Cedar Hotel” neon sign on the upper wall.

Super Chill Vibe

By VegasJoe |

We stopped in on our anniversary to have a drink and recuperate from a horrible dining experience at another establishment. From the moment we walked in to the minute we left, the vibe and staff made us almost completely forget what we’d been through and helped us to enjoy a special evening. Comfortable, South Beach/art deco vibes were all over the decor, staff mood and music. We were We didn’t eat here but we did see small parties as well as larger ones enjoying their dinners. Special mention to Xavier and his staff. He spent time talking to us about the city, The Somerset and just ‘life stuff’. He, and the staff, really made the night positive and memorable for us. He even provided a complimentary glass of champagne for us to celebrate with. All in all, this place has a nice, chill vibe to it.

A very nice looking restaurant with good bunch options

By FredS2008 |

It is nice to be in bright, airy restaurant on a sunny day; especially when the staff is professional. This a big city, good food, good-looking place that was perfect for brunch. From tasty, sweet appetizers to filling, meals with distinctive flavor, Somerset is a great option just off Gold Coast. Trust the specials and enjoy the menu items such as baked eggs brunch.

Really good.

By Gabriele |

Sat outside at this trendy new restaurant. Party of three and we each ordered something different. Duck which I tasted and didn't like, but the person ordering it loved it. Short ribs were great and the burger was amazing! Yummy salad. Good service too. We were seated next to a rather obnoxious diner and we asked to move. The restaurant was accommodating and made amends by giving us a round of drinks and dessert. Would definitely come back.

Many better options within walking distance

By Bruce W |

We moved to the neighborhood 2 years ago and have been there a couple of times now. Blue Door, Maple and Ash, Gibson’s, Hugo’s Frog Bar all have better food. That said, if you can get an outside table in the summertime, Somerset is tough to beat. One more thing. Their $40 corkage fee is piggish. Most other places are $20.

Perfect fun business spot.

By esemmes |

For starters the space is gorgeous with cathedral ceilings and perfect lighting. Our booth was tucked in a corner and perfect for a business dinner. We did all shared plates and every single dish was delicious. Hard to pick a favorite but the hamachi, octopus, kale salad and short rib were all stand outs. The cocktails were very well crafted. Would definitely go back.

Great service. Food was amazing.

Great service. Food was amazing. I was really impressed with the crew, they make me feel in a 5 stars restaurant. Great job guys!

great new addition to Chicago!

By eyeu |

A great new place..excellent food, service and ambiance..connected hotel (Viceroy) is not to be missed. Good selection of wines both by the glass and the bottle. Had a number of dishes we shared...love the whole roasted chicken for 2, the squid ink chitarra, outstanding kale and brussel sprout salad....short ribs were ok..fritters and short bread were a good addition to meal. The chocolate bar for dessert was outstanding.... Valet parking...enjoy the place..cant wait to go back.

Amazing birthday celebration!!

By onlyherbackpack |

A group of us went to Somerset, the newish restaurant in the Viceroy in the Gold Coast, to celebrate two of our birthdays. From the minute we opened the doors we were wowed and the night got better as we went. Somerset has a beautiful, modern, almost Great Gatsby/deco kind of decor. Every detail is polished and unique. You could easily just go sit at the bar and enjoy a great evening of drinks and people watching. The wine list is superb. We prefer Italian reds and they had some of the best. It looked like a great place to order a mixed drink if you wanted to go a different direction. Fancy concoctions were being created all around us. When we were seated in the upstairs dining room, we were presented with personalized menus wishing us happy birthday by name and then given a birthday cake with our names on our plates post dinner. It was sweet and elegant at the same time. The food was also great. I just had a cheeseburger, but it was fancy and all you could want in a cheeseburger. Our table ordered oysters, some seafood pasta and the steak and everything was good! Thank you Somerset. You made our evening special and we will be back. Jennifer

Great for Brunch

By Karen W |

I got the fried chicken and French toast. The French Toast was delicious and the sriracha honey makes the dish special.

Great Place wonderful Food and Service

By Tom B |

This was our first time to Somerset. We got a “sweetheart” booth on the second floor which was quiet but allowed us to see what was going on. The food and drinks were very good. Service was some of the best that we recently had wh8le dining out. Very attentive without being overwhelming. The only issue was that my food was a little cold when it was served, like it had been sitting for too long. This was immediately corrected and reserved. I thought that the pricing was a little below what I was expecting so this made it even better. The place and area does get crowded so plan ahead. We will be going back on our next visit

Wonderful Saturday brunch at Somerset!

By The-Lap-of-Luxury |

Recommended by a fellow TA member, we had the first meal of our trip here. Started with great cocktails, including the watermelon tonic... super refreshing! Smoked beet appetizer was unique and delicious. Moved on to kale salad and chicken sandwich. Salad was fine but nothing special. The chicken sandwich, recommended by Jesse, was amazing. The best we’ve ever had! Perfectly seasoned, crunchy outside and moist and flavorful inside. Still thinking about it from over a week ago. The restaurant was full and had great energy. Would definitely recommend!

Anniversary/Birthday celebration

By Inspiration273310 |

After hearing good comments, we made our first visit. Great vibe. Several areas to sit separately with a small group, but still feel you’re able to enjoy the energy of the restaurant. Service was excellent. Enjoyed fritters, octopus and crudo for appetizers....all excellent. The whole fish entree and duck were both best ever. We enjoy La Colonial, Nico, Gibson’s and Mario’s Table in our neighborhood and Somerset ranks with all of them. Make a point to go to rooftop bar (Devereaux) for after dinner drink.

Outstanding service, good food and swanky, clubby cavernous feel

By Philippe A |

Somerset is a cool spot on the first two floors of the brand new Viceroy Hotel. It has a modern vibe, with well spaced tables, high ceilings and funky light fixtures and art, although we feel that the room on the first floor in the back is by far superior to scoring a table upstairs. The service is truly outstanding: friendly, knowledgeable, and full of good advice in describing dishes and also making sure we did not over-order (most portions are large). The food is good in a middle-of-the -road kind of way. Not too creative, but good and consistent. We went for dinner and it was a good experience, but the place struck us as being ideal for brunch.

Great Service

By Michael Z |

The service was exceptional, the food was just ok. We were hungry so the bread was fabulous. I had the beat salad with chicken, the salad was exceptional, the chicken below average The service made the experience better.

Food nice, good for breakfast without being outstanding

By Belgo96 |

I can only comment on the breakfast that we ate here. We stayed at the Viceroy Hotel, to which the restaurant is attached and had breakfast here on our last day. Obviously the hotel choices are more expensive than if you eat out at a cafe for breakfast. I had the pancakes with blueberry compote and candied walnuts. They were nice and light but needed some more sauce or syrup on them. My latte coffee art was very cute (see pic) but pricey. Our table had a beautiful view out onto the snow in February. The service was fine, although there was not much to be done other than deliver the breakfast items.

Wonderful food and staff

By MTM123123 |

The staff were attentive, the entrees and desserts were wonderful. We would have preferred the patio, but dining inside was great nonetheless.

A "cool" lunch

By George H |

Visited Somerset for for lunch first time. Great spot on N State Street in Chicago. It was a little unusual in that we were at the front end of the "polar vortex" in Chicago so the restaurant was unusually slow. We did receive very attentive service (appreciated) but difficult to know if that was normal or just because we were two of a few in the restaurant. The restaurant is casually elegant and comfortable with an equally comfortable noise level for a business lunch. The menu offered a broad array of lunch choices between appetizers, salads, sandwiches, mains and sides that would provide a lunch solution to the most discriminating diner. Based on a sample of two not so picky diners the food and presentation were excellent. The pricing was more than reasonable for the quality of the restaurant and the food. Somerset is a terrific choice for lunch. Based on this experience I am looking forward to visiting again for dinner in the near future.

Nice and laid back restaurant with efficient service

By Satya S |

Its a relaxed place with great food. The staff is polite and attentive without being overbearing. Early morning sun warms the place while the winds remain helpless whistling outside. Had breakfast and fruits and smoothie. Everything as one would expect from a fine restaurant. Saw people laze about outside in the evenings. Good and fun place, it seemed.

Excellent outdoor dining experience

By Kelley L |

Somerset was a wonderful lunch spot selected for a business luncheon. The weather was perfect for outdoor seating and the salads were fresh and delicious. We also had great service. I will definitely be back.

Great brunch

By Ed_Roidlick123 |

Aside from the fact that this location used to be Melvin B’s one of the trul great Chicago beer gardens, the brunch was excellent. The fried chicken and French toast was delicious and the service was friendly and attentive.

Christmas breakfast and dinner

By windy1875 |

We were staying at the viceroy and had Christmas Day breakfast and dinner here. For breakfast we had the breakfast sandwich and the Gold Coast both plentiful and lattes to wash down. Christmas dinner was limited menu but we enjoyed lentil soup with sourdough bread followed by roast chicken.

Class, comfort and choices

By library48 |

We had dinner here with friends and have great memories of the evening. We received a warm welcome; enjoyed comfortable and quiet seating upstairs; and experienced excellent service from our waiter and all who came to assist us. There was a small mix up when we ordered a bottle of wine and a glass arrived instead, The hostess elegantly told us to enjoy the glass and she quickly arrived with the bottle for the table. The appetizers were especially tasty and we liked the many choices on the menu. Do save room for dessert-worth every calorie!

An excellent newcomer!

By Michael V |

My wife and I went here for our anniversary because it sits on the site of a place in the old Cedar Hotel where we used to meet when we were dating. It’s a vast improvement. The decor is very sleek and clean but at the same time warm and inviting. The front of the house is mostly occupied by the bar and there is a dining area in the back as well as a second dining area upstairs, so having a quiet conversation is not a problem. The food is really the star here. The smoked beet tartare (yes, I meant beet, not beef) at first sounds odd but the execution is outstanding—complex flavors that work well together with just a hint of smokiness. The grilled octopus is also excellent and cooked to a perfect chewiness. My duck breast was cooked perfectly medium rare and the charred cabbage, minced beets and hazelnuts served with it perfectly enhanced the meat. The crispy brussels sprouts with dates and nduja are not to be missed. The service is every bit as good as the food—attentive without being overbearing, unobtrusive but not unavailable. overall, this is a great place and I can’t wait to try it for lunch or even breakfast.

Great brunch, awesome patio!

By ald1122 |

We had a beautiful day to enjoy a fabulous brunch on the patio of Somerset. Nice cocktails and entree choices. We had the baked eggs and veggie scramble, both were amazing. Service was attentive and friendly.

Posh and Yummy Brunch!

By Bridget Stump |

We wrapped up a girls' weekend with brunch at this stylish location in Viagra Triangle. The menu is exciting, service smooth and interiors luxurious. The house made pastries are fantastic for a table to share. Wondrous!

Over-rated and poor service

By Nicolette |

This was our worst meal in Chicago. The Service was so poor during brunch I felt like we were begging the waiter to wait on us. Out of 5 meals , 3 of them arrived ice cold. One actually was a salad so that doesn't count. The Manager came over and was very nice and apologized however by the time we got new eggs the others were done. The manager said he would take something off the bill he literally took 5.00 off for the one portion of eggs. Buy us a drink for heavens sake. Very disappointing.

Sophisticated Surroundings and Good Food, But Poor Menu Descriptions

By Janice R |

A friend and I had lunch at the Somerset. She had eaten there in the past, but I had not. We ordered identical lunches: 1/2 a Bibb and Baby Gem Salad and 1/2 a Confit Salmon Tartine sandwich. Both sounded delicious. I do my best to eat lactose free. I asked for the feta in the salad to be placed on the side, which it was. However, the sandwich arrived with the salmon atop something white, undoubtedly a dairy product. This spread was NOT mentioned on the menu and there was certainly enough of it to warrant mention. The waitress was nice about taking the sandwich back and bringing it without the white. Nevertheless, I think when you announce the ingredients on the menu, you should announce ALL the ingredients. And, in the same vein, if you mention ingredients, they should arrive with the dish. This is in reference to the salad which was said to have avocado and egg and had NONE of either. It was a pretty dull salad without them. By the way, the Pineapple Upside Down Cake with Coconut Lime Sorbet was excellent.

Excellent food and lovely atmosphere.

By jmcjones77 |

We had Saturday brunch here after taking the Architecture cruise. It was really good food. I ordered an egg bake with chorizo. We had monkey bread to share. The service was excellent and we LOVED the food! Great choice!

The Somerset is one of Chicago's best kept secrets! A must try for breakfast!

By Terry |

We spent three nights at the Viceroy Hotel on Rush Street. A wonderful spot we cannot say enough about this hotel. We did not try the Somerset until the morning we left and what a nice surprise. I would like to give this charming restaurant and the wonderful staff ten stars if I could. The food was delicious, it was one of the best breakfasts we have ever had. The servers are professional, attentive, they genuinely care and take pride which greatly enhanced an already wonderful meal. Service like this is rare today but not at the Somerset. Jagr the food and beverage manager stopped by every table and exuded care and professionalism as well as homey comfort. You must try the Somerset 10-STARS!

Excellent Kale Brussels sprouts salad - fresh food - great lunch spot

By heather j |

Went here for lunch with a coworker at the recommendation of our hotel concierge. Both indoor and outdoor seating available. We both loved our meals. The kale and Brussels sprouts salad with grapes and cashews was amazing. I would be a lunchtime regular at this restaurant if I lived/worked nearby for that salad alone. That’s how a kale salad should be done; it was the best I’ve had in a long while. I had grilled salmon added to it which was also very very good. The sourdough bread was fresh. The space was clean and inviting. The service was fine; the server asked if there were any food allergies. I plan to come here again for lunch in the future.

Stunning!

By Denys B |

One of those places where you get an experience of tastes. It is fine dining, and well worth it. We tried several appetizers, two entrees and several desserts. Attention to details and combination of tastes are just amazing. Well worth it. I just wish we would pair it with a great wine.

Must give it a try

By TheOrangeTraveler |

Loved both the food and ambiance at Somerset. The environment moves fluidly from casual at the terrace to more formal towards the kitchen. Every appetizer that we tried was fantastic with the steak tartare at the top! Dessert is a must. Order a few for the table and share away, you will be glad you did. I particularly loved how they accommodated dietary restrictions for someone in our party. This meant dairy free entree and dessert. Delicious too!

Somerset Brunch

By Steven A. |

A friend recommended bunch at Somerset. It is a cool restaurant inside and out. We decided to dine outside and both the food and service were good. We all got an egg dish and I find eggs to be eggs. They had delicious potatoes, which were prepared great - crunchy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside!

Enjoyable breakfast

By Tom B |

Conveniently attached and accessible from the Viceroy Hotel we had breakfast here prior to our departure from the hotel. Enjoyed the outside dining area and were seated immediately. The service was friendly and attentive providing a relaxing experience prior to a day of travel. We found the breakfast choices adequate to meet most appetites from light options to full breakfasts. Our breakfasts were satisfactory and priced as expected for a major city hotel affiliated restaurant.

Interesting place with good attitude

By Pavel B |

The restaurant is new, and they make an effort to develop a profile in a competitive environment. The menu is short, but every dish we tried was very good. The cuisine is mostly Italian (which doesn't quite agree with the name), and it is nice to share.

Mouth watering just thinking about this place.

By Compass01795977461 |

Amazing apetitizers especially Fried sea salt cod fish. Phenomenal dumpling main course and sea scallops were crazy delicious. Can’t wait to go back.

Incredible staff

By Kevin H |

We were here for a family brunch. The atmosphere here was great. Large, wide open dining room with an open kitchen. The menu was good but not huge, guessing breakfast is only served on sundays. The food was good but my order was wrong. No big deal as it was hot and tasty. Portions were a little small but the prices were a little above average but not as bad as expected. Our server was fandamntastic. Some of the best service we’ve had in a long time. I didn’t get her name but she was awesome and pretty cute too. The overall experience was great. Give it a try if you’re in the neighborhood.

Wonderfully convenient in The Viceroy - Chicago

By Odyssey779236 |

When I’m in Chicago staying at The Viceroy it is such a gift to have a restaurant in the hotel that is a trifecta... great food, great drinks and a great staff. If I’m traveling alone I always have a great level of comfort whether waiting at the bar for a friend to show or grabbing a bite at a table solo.

Not impressed

By Jcost_hello |

My cousin and I ate here last weekend while we had a room at Viceory Chicago. We received excellent service at the hotel. Unfortunately our dinner was not impressive. Our waiter was fine. He didn't try to make a connection with us and he didn't seem to enjoy his job. My complaint is not with the food quality, but with the service. I have worked in the service industry for almost 15 years now (restaurants and luxury hotels), so my expectations are pretty reasonable. I understand human error and issues that may be out of the restaurant's control... We ordered our food (appetizers, entrees and dessert) all at once. No problem. The waiter said, "you have to order everything at once, so the kitchen can course out your meal and time everything appropriately." Who ever is in charge of expediting that evening really missed the mark. Nothing was timed out. Our (3) appetizers came out 6 minutes later -- no joke -- I looked at my watch. I understand that is not necessarily a bad thing, but before we could even make a dent in our appetizers our entrees arrived. There wasn't even room on the table (very small, NY style seating), so I asked if they could keep entrees under the warmer OR give us a minute to combine our appetizer plates. The runner just dished out the Brussels sprout salad on to each of our entree plates. Very rushed and sloppy. We wanted to have a long, relaxing dinner & catch up. Instead I felt like we were at a fast food restaurant. Really embarrassing service for this restaurant -- especially since we were forced to order everything at once. Maybe the restaurant was overbooked and they were trying to rush us out? Perhaps the don't have an expediter? Whatever the reason I was very disappointed. I manage the Concierge Desk at a Luxury Hotel on Michigan Avenue. I will not be recommending any of my guests (in the 700 rooms we host) to dine at Somerset. Side Note: Spare Ribs were good, but more like a filet -- odd consistency for a "spare rib." Also was cold by the time I got to eat it because it was sitting on the table for 25 minutes. Brussels Sprout Salad was very good.

Delicious and on point

By SigalH |

We had a lovely dinner at Somerset. Very professional and friendly service. The food was delicious with some twist, just the way we like it. We will definitely be back again. The potato and artichoke side is highly recommended.

Brunch with family

By vascubhab |

Other than the Bellini mimosa which was wonderful, I didn't like any of the entrees or the pastries we ordered upfront. Service & ambience was good but food was very disappointing.
