Amazing taqueria

By Emily T |

This place lived up to the hype- we had heard good things and came right before it opened on a Saturday. There was already a short line so glad we went when we did. There is virtually no street parking but we parked at a nearby lot for $7 since we were going to the staples center afterward but just know you will have to pay for parking most likely. The menu is simple with tacos with different proteins, burrito, mini burrito, and a few other items and the prices were great especially for LA. We loved the grilled steak tacos, pollo tacos, and burritos and they were very flavorful with awesome homemade tortillas. Highly recommend!

The care is evident

A member of Los Angeles’ Fashion District since 2016 Sonoratown has sustained amidst ongoing gentrification, and now emerging from COVID-19 related closures the Restaurant owned by Teodoro Diaz-Rodriguez, Jr. and Jennifer Feltham continues to thrive thanks to quality Ingredients plus friendly service. Paying homage to the immigrants who settled in LA’s current Chinatown after the Gold Rush, plus Teo’s hometown, guests entering Sonoratown will quickly identify the smell of Mesquite as the source of fire to the Restaurant’s grill, a concise menu creating easy choices of four Meats and six preparations. Best known for Carne Asada, each $2.75 Taco seeing plenty of Meat atop Handmade Flour Tortillas, quality sourcing is immediately evident from Protein to Produce, the Steak juicy and complimented by handmade Salsa plus Avocado and crisp Cabbage. Also offering fiery Chorizo and Tripe, well-cleaned and crisp as it should be, another Sonoratown signature is “Burrito 2.0” for $8.75, and for those who’d prefer something smaller with plenty of melted Cheese the “Chivichanga” featuring Anaheim Chiles roasted alongside either Steak or tender Chicken.

Incredibly good

By NCtravelerWS |

This hole-in-the-wall place has the best Mexican food ever. Stand in line, place your order, wait, hunt for a spot to sit, then...savor. The tacos, quesadilla and, especially, the chivichangas are incredibly good. Well worth seeking out.

Chivichanga

By Kevin B |

The Chivichanga was excellent. A mini burrito with tons of juicy shredded beef. I am not sure if I really tasted the blistered tomato or Chile sauce but the beef was tender. The Caramelo on the end of hand was not my cup of tea. It was basically like a quesadilla but with the cheese not melted. Tortillas were grilled and good. Friendly service

Small taco place featured on Netflix

Small Mexican spot in DTLA known for the costilla tacos and chivichangas. Came here on a Saturday around 3:30pm and there was still a short line (it moved fairly quickly). They have a separate line for phone-in orders, and you can order via your usual suspect of apps if you don’t want to go in-person. Metered street parking ($3/hr) or you can park in one of the lots around Santee Alley if you’re not having any luck. There are bathrooms available to the left (ask for the keys). Credit cards are accepted. They do serve alcohol, including Montejo beer. Ordered a couple of tacos each to-go. They bring your food out and call you by name (for both dine-in and takeout orders alike). It took about 10 minutes for us to get our food. The tacos were on the smaller side for $3, but the taste was great. The flour tortillas are handmade and have a nice chewy texture. They have a green avocado salsa and a spicier red salsa - I preferred the red. The Costilla (beef) tacos were flavorful and are a must-get. The tripas (tripe) was crispy. They provide while green onions and radishes rather than the typical cilantro and diced white onions.

Favorite tacos in LA

Hands down my favorite taco place to go to in LA. The meat has a great smokey finish to it that you can't get anywhere else. Definitely try their cabeza tacos when you ge the chance.

Interesting

In our search for the best tacos in Los Angeles we stopped at Sonoratown. This is a small place that puts out a lot of food. We were there on Memorial Day Monday and downtown was mostly quiet but this restaurant had a continuous line. I had a Tripa (beef Intestine) taco, very crispy, fine flavor, and good. My wife and I both had a steak taco, the steak was small chunks of dry meat. My wife also had a chicken taco and the chicken was juicy and flavorful. All the tacos were reasonably good but still didn’t beat the top three on my list which are Guidados on Sunset, Taco & Papas in Monrovia and Taco Girl (Taco Grill) in Glendora.

Wonderful Burritos

By Max G |

Sonoratown has been featured on a few television shows about tacos, and you don't have to suggest great taco joints to us twice. Sonoratown makes fantastic tacos and burritos. My wife and I both had the Burrito 2.0, a large burrito stuffed with grilled steak (which we could smell cooking 3 blocks away), with cheese, beans and guacamole added. The burrito is wrapped in a homemade, Sonoran-style tortilla. Delicious! We had to wait in line about 30 minutes before being able to order, but it was well worth it. The folks in line were friendly. In a city with a million taco joints, Sonoratown stands out.

BEST TACOS IN CALIFORNIA!!!

Delicious tacos!

I read about this place in an article about best Mexicans in LA and I decided to try it since we were in Downtown the whole day. Its a small taqueria, it accommodates around 7-8 people inside and couple outside, but is just amazing. The staff is great, explains everything, shows you pictures of the dishes and you can see them cooking. We ordered Caramelo, Taco and Chimichanga. All of them very tasty! And price was very good too, we paid around 16 dollars in total. I could have gone here again but unfortunately no more time to go to downtown. I totally recommend it.

Perfect

Legit Mexican Food Joint Downtown

By N D G |

This is a legit, great, inexpensive place to get Mexican food in DTLA. Only have Mexican sodas - a good sign. Took some out of towners here (from Seattle and less familiar with the great Mex food of LA) - everyone impressed.

Just ok

By Matt B |

Decent tacos, nothing horribly wrong south them, and if you are in the area already, they are an ok choice, but that being said, it's not worth driving to. Parking in the area is a hassle, and overall just not worth the ordeal. I've found that taco stands in LA are always better (and cheaper) than restaurants or trucks.

Bruh! These tacos are amazing!! 1 is not enough!

Last night was the first time I ever went after watching my friend eat them for days! They opened at 5:30 when went down there at 5:25 (he lives across the street and we were on commercial break) there was already a line. Like how sway? The door opens and happiness assaults your nose by way of smoked meats. I got 2 steak tacos, a chicken, and chorrizo (sp). Everything was so full flavor. I went back for more at like 9 and they had basically sold out of everything. That was heartbreaking for me but def a great thing for them. They arent open today (Sunday) so I am a little sad about that. If you are on 8th street in downtown, you need to go there! I am very comfortable with them having the title of and or being up for the spot of "Best Tacos in DTLA".

Pretty Awesome Tacos

By KrisK_8 |

I was DTLA and did an internet search for "Best Tacos Near Me" and this place popped up. Based on its location in what is a developing, but still gritty side of DLTA, I hesitated, but so glad we went. This place is fantastic. Pretty bare bones, but make no mistake they know what they are doing. Very tight menu. We ordered a little bit of everything and it was all good. If you are anywhere near the vicinity, it's completely worth the effort.

Best Tacos in LA

By Sandra_Quintero |

Tacos at this place as delicious. Freshly made flour tortillas are so yummy. The way they cook the meat is outstanding. The different options of tacos are unique but they are all really good. Even their aguas frescas are really good. If you are in LA, make sure you stop at Sonoratown. Their chivichanga is my favorite, but everything is actually pretty good.

I want to live here (and just eat tacos all day) 🌮 🌯

Incredible Mexican food, we came back twice during our stay in LA. Within walking distance from both the Ace and Freehand hotel, this place is perfect for take out or a quick bite eating in. We tried the tacos (all of them), quesadillas and the burrito and each dish was absolutely delicious. Also try the homemade watermelon juice. Staff was super friendly.

Excellent food and atmosphere!

The costilla taco and it had so much flavor! It wasn't huge but it was just the right lunch size for me. Served with green onions and radishes, it reminded me of Mexican dinners with my grandma. I also had the chips with guacamole (so flavor-packed!) and delicious watermelon agua fresca. This meal was a total win, all around.

This is a MUST when in LA.

By World traveler |

This is a MUST when in LA. Wife and I were visiting LA and stayed in Santa Monica. We made the drive 35-40 mins and were happy we did. We will make a point to go again before we leave. They have the chivichanga which is fire! Cheap and great food. I tried both the chicken and beef, I’d prob lean beef. Both are good tho

Truly amazing

By GoldenJoplin |

There are like a zillion Mexican places in LA, but this one is special. The atmosphere is amazing and you can smell delicious smoky meat as you step in. Their tortillas are incredible, their carne asada's the best I've tried, their aguas frescas are so refreshing, and the chivichanga is one of the best burritos I've ever tried. Everything for a great price. You put all of that together and the experience is amazing.

Loved the mini-tacos

By tb911 |

FIrst of all -- parking on the roof! That is awesome. $8, but so much easier than on the street. Tried the beef, chicken & chorizo mini-tacos and the chicken and beef mini-burritos (chimmavanga or whatever they called them). The burritos where good, nice and juicy and flavorful, but I'm not sure I got one of each because they were very similar. As for the tacos, the chorizo was good, but the chicken and beef were amazing. Lovely marinade both meats. They were the best, by far. I avoided the larger taco because it had more "stuff" to hide the meat flavor. I'd definitely go back for the chicken and beef mini-tacos. By the way, place can be crowded, long lines, and a little slow, as everything is made to order. Also can be loud, with Mexican music. (That they could probably do without.)
