Al fresco dinner

By Laura |

Little Italy is a great street in San Diego full of lovely restaurants. We chose to have dinner at Sorrento one evening after reading so many positive reviews, and we ate outside in the courtyard area. We had the pappardelle bolognese and the penne pasta with chicken, mushroom spinach in a creamy sauce. The penne dish was definitely our favourite out of the two. The white wine we had wasn’t totally to our taste but still drinkable. Alex was our server and he was very friendly. We chose not to have any dessert but Alex brought over a complimentary cake which we thoroughly enjoyed! We had a relaxing and enjoyable evening here and would highly recommend.

Good Date Night spot

By 48Buddy |

This is a nice Italian restaurant surrounded by nice restaurants on India Street in Little Italy. The menu is authentic and the food delicious. The staff were very personable and friendly and made for a nice experience. The pizza is thin soft crust and doesn't have cheese unless you ask for it. The minestrone was very flavorful and fresh. Our afogate for desert wasn't as good as what we had in Florence, but it was still a treat! The patio seating has nice ambiance but might have a longer wait than inside if you visit during peak times.

Real Italian Food

By Kelsey M |

My colleagues and I had a late flight into San Diego for the start of a long conference. We needed food so we walked around to see what there was for food options. Lo and behold we ended up in little Italy (two of my colleagues are Italian) and decided to eat at Sorrento. My colleagues felt right at home, not only was the food REAL Italian cuisine, but they were also able to converse with the staff in Italian. It was just a great experience. I ordered the "Linguine Nere" which had squid ink linguini, bay scallops, bay shrimp, tomatoes, and leek all tossed together in an amazing cream sauce. It was magnificent! Great first impression of San Diego!

Exceptional Service and Food at Sorrento in Little Italy

By Fred G |

Sorrento is kind of a quite place that has high-quality food and top-notch service. On a recent trip to San Diego my wife and I stopped in for dinner one night. We found it because it was next door to one of my top two restaurants in the country, Ironside Seafood and Oyster bar. What a great find. The food was excellently prepared. My wife had the Rack of Lamb special and I opted for the Lobster Fran Diavola. These were genuinely great meals. The price was certainly fair for the food received and the service was friendly and professional. What more can you ask of a place you've never been before to eat? Give Sorrento a chance and I think you will find it rewarding. We did.

Great Italian Food in San Diego

Delicious. Real Italian food. Pizza was superb. Eggplant Parmesan was delicious. Nice size servings. Reasonable prices. Service was excellent. Should have gone back!! Will next trip for sure.

Home cooked comfort food

By PHDSydney_Australia |

This place has great food and the service when I attended was very efficient. I would recommend dinner here

Top home cooked pasta

By PHDSydney_Australia |

Came here on spec and didn’t have any preconceptions but this place impressed with the quality of the food - linguine was tops and the service on a busy Sat night. The staff were super efficient and although 5e music could have been better & less noisy the night was great

Average

By Judi E |

Our visit to Sorrento started off rough because when we arrived (5minutes early) they had already crossed off our name! We had requested the patio and they put us at a wobbly table on an incline by the blazing hot pizza oven. When we asked to move to a table that was more comfortable the response wasn’t gracious or even polite but they moved us. I could forgive the breach if the food was great but it wasn’t, it was pretty average. The lasagne and tiramisu were good but between the 6 dishes we tried no one took their leftovers home. On the plus the patio was nice and service was fine. Little Italy is a busy place and a great place to go for dinner but there are definitely some better Italian restaurants in the area.

Excellent food and service

By Minardi |

This place is a solid 5 stars. One of the best pizzas I have ever had and an excellent service. Price was within the range I was expecting to pay. I highly recommend.

Spectacular Italian Fare but service a bit caotic

By SteveLicata |

After agonizing over countless options on a crowded Labor Day Sunday night, my Peruvian wife (an expert in Italian food) and I took the plunge at Sorrento. The place was insanely busy and the runners and busboys looked busier than trains at rush hour in Grand Central Station. The lead waiter, Fabirizio, took charge of a platoon of runners in our area and really helped salvage an utterly chaotic scene (we spoke with others at the far end of the restaurant who were not so fortunate). That being said, this was probably the best Italian meal we have had, including some meals in Italy itself. My wife ordered the spaghetti fra diavlo. In most restaurants, this is overcooked and over seasoned to create a "hot spicy dish". Sorrento does it perfectly, with very al dente pasta, the spicy, but not overwhelming zing of chili, but also a strong garlic taste. I ordered the linguine mediteraneano. Have you ever ordered a "seafood with pasta" dish where it seems to be 85% pasta and 15% seafood? Well, Sorrento does just the opposite. The pasta was cooked to perfection with white wine sauce but I spent all my time digging through an incredibly generous serving of clams, mussels, crab, shrimp, scallops, etc. Even after the noodles were gone, there was still a "seabed of small seafood" at the bottom of my plate! We also had a very good and enormous bowl of spinach soup. We were tempted to order the fried calamari but ran out of time and stomach space. Most amazing is that our enormous and enormously-satisfying pasta dishes were only $18 each. Many so-called top restaurants on the same block were charging $27-30 for a similar meal and I very much doubt they could match Sorrento in quality. We will gladly come back and at these reasonable prices, we will bringing our two young adults sons without fear of disappointment. Mille Grazie!

Probably the best restaurant we dined in during our stay in San Diego

By Alwaysonholiday2 |

We dined here one evening and in addition to the really lovely food the service was first class, as the ‘brummie’ manager really has his finger on the pulse and watches everything constantly and directs the waiting staff accordingly. A great place to eat good food and a really good experience.

Outstanding food and service

By Lisa T |

We went to Sorrento in Little Italy on our way home from our visit to San Diego zoo and balboa park. It was the perfect end to our day. The food was tasty and plentiful. Service was fast and efficient. They were also able to add extra chillies to make my dish into the perfect dish for me.

A romantic evening on the patio/courtyard

By Phyliss B |

What a wonderful Italian restaurant! We visited twice while in San Diego. Let me recommend the chicken dishes! Every single dish is incredible! We also ordered a pizza and it was delicious, and we had plenty to take back to our hotel. The drinks were also generously poured and worth the price. The courtyard was heated with porch heaters and added a romantic touch. Servers were attentive, friendly and prompt. Bread was served with the meal and refilled when requested. Sorrento makes Little Italy wonderful! 🇮🇹

Good pasta with Italian vibes

By Linn H |

It’s amazing how you can find your Italian getaway in the middle of San Diego. The Little Italy area is very nice and so was this restaurant. Got home made pesto with bread for starters and pasta with mushrooms and gorgonzola as main course and it truly tasted like Italy. The price was very reasonable, especially compared to the other restaurants across the street. Good music playing and helpful waiters.

Great food

By Paul V |

After a disastrous experience in Little Italy the previous day, we decided to go Sorrento. No TV (super bowl), just nice background music. Friendly, efficient service. We shared the beef carpaccio served with shaved cheese, arugula, capers and virgin olive oil. Two huge thin slices of beef. My wife had the veal ravioli (ravioli special of the day). Four large ravioli in a very good tomato sauce. I had the black and saffron linguine (another daily special), loaded with seafood and fish, tomatoes and marinated artichoke hearts. Huge portions (they should be ashamed of themselves). The linguine was one the best I have ever had. Highly recommended.

Great Happy Hour

By Susan W |

We went there to ha v e a drink waiting for a table to eat oysters at the restaurant next door. In looking at the happy hour menu we decided to stay at Sorrento. Best decision of the vacation. A full meal from the many selections from the menu. The pizza is good. The shrimp and cannalini beans yummy, calamari great.

Superb!

By betsnow |

So glad we tried this place! We sat on the patio which is really the way to go. The service was attentive (but no overly so) and really great. We were a party of 5, so between all of us tried several of the dishes, along with a couple of bottles of California Cabernet. The fresh bread and pesto dipping sauce they give you right away is SO good. I probably could have just sat there eating that all night. My hubs had the Cioppino - great, loaded with seafood and he was very happy. I had the Caprese salad and a Margherita pizza, both were WONDERFUL and super fresh. I can't for the life of me remember what the others had -- one dish was made with black noodles and what tasted like an Alfredo sauce and was divine. (yup, I had a bite) Totally coming back here.

Happy Hour is great

By loonalaska |

Such a great selection to choose from on the happy hour menu. We didn't realize the portions would be so generous and had to take some home. The flavors were outstanding and it was delicious. We will definitely return when back in town. The service was a bit slow, but the guy delivering water and picking up the plates was very courteous and efficient. They don't fill the beers to the top and the guy rushed them to the table with a spill and didn't even acknowledge it. Otherwise best Italian place to savor your tastebuds.

Favorite meal our whole trip. GO HERE!

By Ammi T |

We went to Little Italy (described as "foodies' paradise" by our hotel hostess), and we're a couple of blocks in when we were greeted by the outdoor host. Menu looked good, and they spoke English with heavy Italian undertones (making is believe it was going to be legit) plus they were super friendly, so we gave it a shot. This was by far the BEST Italian food either of us have ever had, and the atmosphere was very comfortable and relaxing. Bruschetta was superb, as was his Penne Arrabbiata with chicken and my Regina Margherita pizza. All of the staff were great and made sure we were happy the whole time. Would eat here again and again and again.

Great wine, too much salt and fat in food, service a bit slow

By foodiecat |

We dined here in our last night in San Diego and had a mixed experience. The hearts of palm and quinoa salad was spectacular and we enjoyed the wine we ordered, but other dishes weren't quite as good. My husband's calamari appetizer was way too large for one person; I'd recommend at least three people share it. His swordfish was over-salted and I suspect the kitchen added salt to it as well as to the pasta it was served on; not necessary at all when the fish has been cooked with capers and kalamata olives. My cioppino contained way too much fat (butter? Oil? Both?) which overwhelmed the seafood and veg. We didn't send anything back as we were tired and our server disappeared for long periods of time more than once. He also commented on our "70's style" even though both of us were wearing 50's-inspired clothes, as we often do. When we mentioned that, his reply was "oh, I'm too young to know that." Calling your costumers old... nice. In fairness, he did top our wine off gratis later, but ouch.

Great happy hour!

By marialaffy |

We enjoyed happy hour here. Had Chianti wine which was good and a delicious arugula pizza. Actually have Italian wait staff. Would recommend!

Tasty Food in Little Italy

By mistyinstl |

We arrived here after attending a baseball game. Despite our slightly disheveled appearance, we were seated right away. My daughter ordered a pizza, I ordered the pear salad, and my husband had veal saltimbocca. The food was beautifully plated and tasty. Sitting outside in the courtyard added to the experience.

Quirky, lovely staff, GREAT service, amazing food

By jwredlabel |

Our hostess was chatty, lovely and quite quirky. Our waiter/server was truly unique and worked hard to ensure we were happy. The Caprese was huge, delicious and accompanied with lots of greens, the chicken marsala was buried in mushrooms and had lots of sauce, plus greens, potatoes and carrot. Divine. Wife's salad was topped with perfectly grilled salmon. We left very content, and happy due to the service and the food.

Come for Happy Hour, you might want to spend the rest of the evening!

By annezk13 |

We were looking for a nice happy hour and this one surpassed our expectations. A charming waiter from Rome, delicious food (the artichoke dish!), and fun people watching. The perfect evening, grazie mille!!

Perfect Italian in Little Italy

By alanmcl |

Brilliant food, great beer & wine selection, great service, good value. Just loved the place. Perfect.

Good pizza and lovely stuff

By Maura D |

Wonderful dinner with some friends. Besides a little issue we had with the reservation, that was solved by the owner in a bit, stuff, food and drinks were perfect! I loved my dinner and the attention from the guys working there. My daughter has food intolerances and they took a great care of her despite was a crazy/busy Friday night. We will be back for sure! Great job everyone!

great pizza

By Cory N |

Authentic pizza with a nice outdoor seating area, staff was friendly and attentive. They have outdoor heaters for colder days.

How is this place so high rated?!

By v29ville |

Wow... This is by far the worst restaurant I have eaten at in years... Just wow... I went with my cousin and ordered cocktails and fried calamari. I ordered the from Sorrento cocktail and enthousiastically tasted it...at first it was a rather confusing taste, then it hit me, this what disgust tasted like. I looked up at my cousin to see her having a hard time swallowing her Moscow mule. We traded drink to make sure that yes, they were that bad, counted down and each took a final sip as the food arrived. How can I described this fried calamari... Well the one good thing about it that it was crispy, but taste wise it was like drinking unrefined cornflower oil. We just got the check (you're welcome) and left. My tongue felt coated in oil for the rest of the evening. More than disgusted, this food made me feel sad and confused , why?? Why was is that bad? How could it possibly be that bad? Well, this is one mystery I do not intend to solve.

OK for dinner.

By anniefield |

Ordered bruschetta and caprese to start. The bruschetta was very nice though the caprese was a bit weird as it had green tomatoes and peppers. Just not what we are used to in the UK and Italy. Pizzas were nice and thin with a good fine crust and the salad was fine. Wine was OK and prices were on par with most other places around.

Outstanding Pasta

By Dan_Yucaipa_CA |

What a delightful find! The matre’d of another restaurant suggested we try Sorrento and what a great suggestion that was. The pasta was unbelievable! The best dish was the ravioli. Try the artichoke appetizer. Another delightful addition was bread served with pesto. My oldest son loves pesto. “Why doesn’t every Italian restaurant offer pesto with the bread?” My daughter’s salad was too lemony. On a beautiful SD day, we settled for an inside table, but with the doors and windows open, it felt like we had an outside table. Service was very fast and attentive. Order pasta!

Good Italian fare

By tazzy9868 |

The food was good and somewhat reasonable for portions received. The cocktails were a little pricey and didn’t taste that good for price. The service was quick for amount of people there. Took a little bit to check out.

Don’t go!!

By Tim J |

Wine bottle bad own dispute, food terrible, service horrid. Food was not Authentic owner came out and threatened to call police if we didn’t pay for entire meal even though food wasn’t delivered. Paid bill and will charge back on American Express.

Terrific Happy Hour!!

By Jo Ann |

We walked to LIttle Italy last night looking for a happy hour spot and we found it!! We had eaten lunch at Sorrento before but didn't know anything about their happy hour. From their happy hour menu, we ordered meatballs, shrimp and artichoke appetizers. Plenty for 2 people. The red and white wine choices were very reasonable! We'll be back!!

Bellissimo

By Denise C |

So good we visited it twice! Great atmosphere, fantastic service , wonderful food and wine. 4 friends each ordering a different meal and no one was disappointed.

Excellent wood fired pizza

By bchrefuge |

Enjoyed dinner with friends, sitting in the outside dining area enjoying the busy downtown Little Italy. Ordered 2 pizzas. One came back burned at the bottom and sent it back. Received a new one, cooked just right. Chef came out and apologized for the burned pizza and explained why it was burned.

Nice place

By Mateo R |

Went in for a pizza margherita and two drinks, I would say it's ok nothing special. The waiter was friendly though didn't come by the table often.

One of the best meals we’ve had in the states

By rob c |

We called in after walking by and seeing the food over patrons were eating, the staff were welcoming and the food tasted as good as it looked, after three weeks of eating the standard fare this was a real treat 👍

Great Sunday lunch

By MazzoniA58 |

Made a stop for a quick lunch during my visit in San Diego, ended by chance in this restaurant and enjoyed a great lunch. High quality meat in the carpaccio with perfect dressing, excellent pizza and tri colours salad, good cold cuts with cheese. The waiters were super nice and the limoncello digestive at the end was a great treat. Hope to return soon !!!!

Best Italian in Little Italy

By LilMsFox |

This place had some of the best Italian food we've ever tasted outside of Italy! I absolutely loved my Paccheri al Salmone and my husband barely spoke while eating his Penne Pollo e Funghi. We sat outside in the patio area and it was just a great atmosphere. Perfect for us. I regret not trying the Nutella cheesecake, but we were so full! The portions are excellent and the food is made fresh. Highly recommend if you are in Little Italy!

Just right

By joanna729 |

This was our second encounter for a meal in Little Italy area on a recent trip to San Diego. We were greeted at the door as we were considering the menu by a wonderful manager with a delightful Italian accent. He described the specials is great detail, making our mouths water at the homemade Ravioli options. We walked the strip a bit before returning to this restaurant and were not disappointed. I had the eggplant and Ricotta Ravioli w/pesto and tomato sauce and my husband had the seafood Ravioli. The bartender made me the most delicious Amaretto Sour I have had in my 50+ years and the food was out of this world!

Authentic & Fun

By Debski11 |

We had friends in town & wanted a place we could sit at the bar, enjoy some drinks, app’s & atmosphere. This was perfect! Friendly bartender - from Italy. Great atmosphere, fun vibe before dinner crowd. Bartender turned us onto his homemade cask Negroni’s!! They were awesome! Appetizers were delicious. We had a great nite & can’t wait to go back for dinner (and more Negroni’s)!

AMAZING!!!

By Estibaliz H |

AMAZING! Service is great, they offered individual water plates for our dogs. Food was GREAT, full of flavor and portions were very good as well. By far the best Italian restaurant in little Italy! Alexandro our waiter was super nice

Delicious food

By Jpamr5 |

On the evening of Tuesday, January 14, 2020, five of us enjoyed a delicious meal at Sorrento. Fresh bread with the pesto dipping sauce served before the meal was a nice touch. We ordered the Linguini Mediterraneo with white wine sauce. The seafood was plentiful with the linguini. The Pera E Formaggio (pear salad) was very tasty. Pleasant atmosphere with good service. Visiting from Texas and decided to try Sorrento based on reviews and being within walking distance of our hotel.

Great for Takeaway Pizza

By dadndoc |

We ordered some takeaway pizza from this restaurant. They were tasty and well priced compared with other pizza restaurants in Little Italy. Definitely worth visiting for a meal if you are in the area.

Great!

By vampireweekend |

Although really really busy we were lucky and we were seated immediately. Staff were all very hardworking and friendly. You are giving bread and homemade pesto whilst you look at the menu. The chicken and the fillet mignons were absolutely delicious, the fresh vegetables were great too. You don;t mind 20% service when it's this good.

Get together after seeing a play

By edwin b |

A group of us decided to see a matinee and have a belated birthday dinner for my wife as it was the first time we could all to get together We all ordered different dishes but I can only tell you about the pizza of the day and the ciopino seafood stew my wife and I had The stew was probably the best I have eaten in San Diego it was prepared in a delicious tomato sauce with lots of fresh seafood The pizza however was meant to have Anaheim chili and the very attentive waiter warned us that is spicy ,however it never saw an Anaheim chili but came with green peppers which I can eat I removed them but was disappointed The rest of our friends liked their meals and they even brought my wife a very large piece of tiramisu to celebrate her BD We will come back again

Big Meals

By Retired Spend It All Now |

We went Sorrento on a Thursday evening without a reservation. It seemed fairly busy yet we were able to get a table. The menu was extensive with many pasta options and other Italian dishes. I had the Veal with prosciutto and roasted vegetables. Quite good and a large portion. Far too big compared to portions you would receive in Italy. They could easily cut back on the size given they also bring bread to start. My wife had a chicken and pasta dish which was good yet far too large. The service was prompt and the meal came out very quickly. So fast that we were and out in under an hour. Probably a bit too fast given we were on vacation. The pricing was as expected at $56 before tip for two entrees and a glass of wine each. Overall a decent choice and perhaps consider sharing an entree with an appetizer to start.

Only the best Italian food in the city!!

By Elizabeth W |

We are in town for a wedding and used Trip Advisor to find an Italian restaurant in Little Italy in San Diego! We hit the jackpot our food was amazing. Our waiter okay I will probably spell this wrong but Alejandro was fabulous!! The white pizza was extraordinary! My husband had a gorgeous calzone with ham and salami. Our other friends has a variety of dishes and were raving. I enjoy Lambrusco with dinner and it was one of the best I have had in a long time but the icing on the cake was the amazing cannoli. That’s dessert alone got a 5 star!! Definitely a place to get authentic Italian restaurant for a reasonable price and amazing service!!

Good Pizza

By AlexJ262 |

A nice, busy restaurant in the heart of Little Italy with a pleasant courtyard and street seating. The staff were friendly and the service was relaxed and not rushed. The bread to start was delicious and served with a divine tomato dip. I had a meat lovers pizza which was perfectly cooked with an airy crust. The toppings were generous and the sauce was very authentic. Only criticism was the amount of cheese and grease- definitely more American than Italian in that sense.

Fun atmosphere - great food

By Annfromtheham |

We had a fabulous dinner here on our first night in San Diego. The service was excellent and friendly and the food was wonderful. My husband and I shared a salad and split an entrée and the staff were very accommodating. This was our best meal while we were on vacation. We liked it so much we considered going back a second night. I wish we had!

Find excellent pizza here

By chuckawala |

Coming from the northeast USA, I grew up with some of the best pizza from Boston to New York. Finding a top pepperoni pizza can be challenging in so. Cali - excellent recipe at Sorrento’s, with fresh salad and soup. The staff was quick and you can enjoy a meal on the patio.

Dinner

By Blackeel63 |

Another San Diego Little Italy gem as far as the four of us were concerned. Unpretentious, you see what you get and the food and drink are great. Prices are right too. My wife had scallops which came with vegetables and was cooked superb. I had the short ribs and pasta which was rich; luscious and very flavorful. The other relatives had chicken parm and lasagna. Portion sizes were good. They need to upgrade the Italian bread, but it no deal-breaker. There it is…straight up!

Wonderful dining experience!

By bonbonkl |

My husband and I had a wonderful dinner topped off by the most delicious cannelloni we have ever eaten. Our server’s were friendly and attentive which helped to make this a 5 star dining experience! Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Anniversary lunch

By Syl |

Great early lunch in Little Italy. Stopped by after farmers market across the street. Service was awesome and food was delicious! Will definitely be back

Great place

By Eileen O |

We sat in the courtyard on a cool evening under the flame of their outdoor propane heaters. It was very comfortable and loved the ambiance of the courtyard. The food was very good and the staff and service were excellent. Will definitely visit again on my next visit to San Diego.

Great italian - fantastic service

By 25to30 |

It was our first night in san diego and the lovely outdoor space (romantic and vibrant as the sunset) and smell of pizza tempted us in. The service was excellent, friendly, attentive and helpful (suggesting right wine to go with dinner) and fantastic with our five year old (patient with him when he wanted to order his own dinner). Food was excellent - we had scallops and spaghetti carbonara (lovely fresh pasta) which were both delicious, and son had a pizza. There is no kids menu but they will do smaller plates and box any pizza they don't finish. Espresso to finish - lovely and strong, just like Italy. We will be back for pudding!

Magnifique!

By 99MD2015 |

The mesmerism of Little Italy is that it is saturated with Italian restaurants, each vying for your epicurean challenge and expectation. But finding the best outdoor seat is the first challenge. When you are finally worn and weary scouring for one, you fortuitously end up in a setting that resembles the entrance to an open garage. Having overcome that first initial upset, the rest is an epicurean odyssey. Everything we ordered was magnifique, especially the deep fried calamari. For the first time in a long time, I felt I was served with something that tasted like seafood rather than rubber remnants.

Rude and dismissive

By Laurie Ann Vers... D |

With so many fabulous places for Italian food in this area, we expected the same great service and food we have been experiencing this week. Don’t waste your time with sorrento. The staff was indifferent and arrogant and we felt as though we were an inconvenience. The pizza was burnt. We tried to get the attention of several different servers for drink refills because our waiter never returned to our table after he delivered the food. We were promised drink refills by three different employees and they never came and seemed annoyed that we requested anything. Terrible service, and not worth the $75 bill for two burnt pizza and three beers. When we finally got the bill, the waiter tossed it on table without a word. Arrogance is not a good look on anyone. Don’t waste your money-many better options around here.

Great restaurant

By wick1979 |

Started with octopus carpaccio was excellently seasoned and loved the parts of palms as well. Main wad the halibut special. Large piece nicely cooked and did not come with a side of pasta. Calzone was very nice as well. Defiantly recommend.

Mixed

By MmeWorthington |

You have to wait for a table at most of the Little Italy restaurants. This was a 20m wait. We got quickly seated and food came promptly. 2 pizzas, 2 pasta dishes. The pizzas didn’t get a good review from the chaps, one was burnt. The pasta was good, try the chicken and blue cheese. Drinks took a long tome to arrive. Busy buzzing place with pleasant staff. We preferred the restaurants on Kettner though

Great atmosphere, average food

By road_warriors08 |

Pretty place to eat outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. Heaters can be used if it's chilly. Food is just ok. We love real Italian food, but no one in our party of 8 was impressed enough to want to return. Service was terrible as we could never find our waiter and somethings we requested took forever to be brought to us or never made it to our table.

Our Favorite Restaurant in Little Italy!

By BarryHaun |

Every time we find ourselves in Little Italy, we always migrate over to Sorrento, especially if it's near happy hour. Everything we'd had so far is so delicious - the pizza, pastas, artichokes, salads, are all first rate and during happy hour, you can't beat the prices! There's a great outdoor area as well.

Great cocktails

By amy c |

This place has wonderful craft cocktails in addition to great food. The price was very reasonable for a high dinner and our wait staff was very animated.

Okay but not outstanding

By Elizabeth T |

Chose this cos saw it on Trip Advisor. We thought the atmosphere was good and service was friendly. However the food wasn’t as good as we hoped. My lasagne was a little bland, and a little too much cheese and not enough meat for my liking. I didn’t think the portion was huge unlike other reviewers. My husband thought his papadella bolognaise needed more seasoning. But they were both hot which I don’t take for granted nowadays. We sat outside which was nice but a little chilly. Sorrento could do with some outside heaters like some of its competitors. Overall okay but not outstanding

Excellent Pizza

By VictoriaMendralla |

Excellent, attentive service and an amazing pizza. We loved our Profumata pizza with the extra additional prosciutto.

Good food and great srvice

By James |

We headed over without booking and were seated quickly in the outside area which is really nice. Service was really good and food very good, with reasonable prices. We would return.

Authentic Italian, served by same; Delicious dishes; resonable prices; Quick service; Fun!

By JimB_Traveler |

A great Italian place in Little Italy, on India street. They have an outdoor section which I recommend. Beer on tap is reasonable at $6 and the food is delicious. Had the Tortolini w/ Mushroom sauce, umm! Would return!

A lovely place to eat

By BSV |

The food is good, the atmosphere is good, the service is good, and the place is just all-over good. On my last trip to SD, we ate there for business, and on other occasions with friends, either way it's a good choice

Fabulous food

By Michelle F |

Just got back from this great restaurant and wish I could visit again. The food was homemade, flavourful and plentiful. I cannot fault a thing. Service was efficient, friendly and attentive. Excellent value for money, an absolute gem.

Good food for a good price! BUT..

By Dom N |

We both had vine with pizzas what were delicious (for not being in Italy). Before we got served bread with homemade pesto. The interior was appealing, background music was great and the table was clean. The hint with the tip, like mentioned before, is unfortunately true. It's not even clearly listed on the bill, just added to the total! But I can accept that, as the service was extraordinary and we enjoyed spending time at this place.

Nice family atmosphere and very good food

By Kevin T |

My wife and I sat out on the patio and enjoyed the atmosphere and watching the pizzamaker. He had a special oven and he hand-tossed all of his dough. I had an amazing avocado salad and my wife a very good seafood pasta dish. We also had good service and will come back to this restaurant.

Great Italian desserts and pasteries

By TheoKojack |

Located next to a fine dining Italian Restaurant Buon Appetto, we had to stop in for dessert. They feature well over a dozen different Gelato and Sorbets. If you were raised near an Italian neighborhood you will love the Italian pastries and cookies. They do serve dinners and are more reasonably priced then their neighbor next door, just didn't have enough days to try their food

Tasty

By M B |

First visit tonight and we ordered Lasagna di Carne $21 and Pollo Marsala $23. We were seated immediately in a nice corner table outside on the patio and were served cold water and 2 baguettes. The Lasagna was a nice size piece and was very very flavorful. This was a very tasty dish. The Pollo Marsala was served with mushrooms and a light brown gravy on top, carrots, broccoli, asparagus and small potato’s. The flavor was light and tasty. The carrots were quite difficult to cut so several were left in the plate. This restaurant has indoor seating, patio seating and extended sidewalk seating. Staff was friendly, service was just fine. We haven’t tried other restaurants in Little Italy but this one is tasty.

Don’t walk here run here

By BubbaG1812 |

Oh my goodness I dream about this places food and you ask which foods; all of it. The service on point, the drinks delicious and well made, the food Jesus take the wheel; so good. The quinoa salad, pesto pasta and prosciutto pizza all to love on. The best with the best items. Olive oil is tasty with their bread. Yum!! Seriously this is by far the best italian joint in little Italy. Everyone is super friendly and very helpful due to the rain they moved us in super quickly and we did nothing but eat. You can thank me later

Friendly attentive staff good food

By Tony |

This is a great place to eat. Had dinner here the penne puttanesca. Very flavoursome. Staff are welcoming and table service is spot on.

Once you try Sorrento you will be hooked.

By mcintoshnancy4 |

I live in San Diego County and I make sure when I am in Little Italy I go to Sorrento for the best Italian dinning for the money. I enjoy the outside patio, because you can see people strolling on the side walk without them being to close to them.

Good alternative

By Aurora M |

In case you do not get a table in other restaurant close to this without doubt you may eat in this one. Authentic Italian Food, very good and quick service.

Delcious

By Heather M |

My friends and I were spending a girls weekend in San Diego and wanted to eat in Little Italy. We came across Sorrento as we were browsing the streets for options. The atmosphere was fun and they had outdoor seating. We sat inside,m but the area where we ended up was dark - almost too dark to read the menu. The fresh pesto and bread were a great starter. All the food we ordered was delicious and you could tell it was fresh. They have gluten free pasta, which was nice as one of our party has a gluten sensitivity and she could still enjoy a pasta meal. The portions where big - none of the four of us could finish our meals. Our server was nice and they did a good job of keeping our water refreshed.

Nice atmosphere and quiet

By ORCon |

We were walking down the street to have dinner. The hostess caught us and showed us the menu. Otherwise we would not have gone in. We were hungry and notices they weren’t busy. We had a pretty good meal. I ordered lobster ravioli but more ricotta in it than lobster. Decent prices and an okay meal. You won’t leave stuffed. My plate had only four ravioli on it.

A lot of options on the menu

By hotweatherfan1 |

We were in Little Italy and didn't know where to go. We stopped here because the menu looked interesting. We sat outside. The heater next to our table was not working. They originally tried to tell us it was, but it was obvious that there was no heat, glow, etc.. on this one. They did get the tank replaced and it worked. We only saw our waiter a few times during our dining experience. They seemed to be wanting to turn the tables over quickly even though they were not that busy. Our drinks were never offered to be refilled even though they were empty. The bread and pesto that were brought to the table was very tasty. I ordered one of the specials of the day- lobster ravioli. The sauce on the ravioli was very tasty. The ravioli itself was somewhat disappointing. The lobster meat was very chewy. Another dish ordered contained salmon and pasta in a red sauce. While flavorful, the salmon could not be tasted. Overall, it was decent. Just not as good as we had hoped. Perhaps another choice would've given us a different opinion.

Quaint Dinner in Little Italy

By MDHonu |

We enjoyed our meal at Sorrento in Little Italy. The food was tasty, and because we arrived before 6 pm, we paid happy hour prices. Outdoor seating is a must.

Nice place

Great fresh food here the gnocchi where the best great salads great pizza good all round place we all enjoyed it .

A Mixed Result

By dtgtyo |

We were looking for a late evening pizza meal in Little Italy and found this place attractive and were quickly seated. From there the results were mixed; service seemed a random affair; an excellent Burrata antipasti; and, sadly, a cold pizza; soft and limp by the time it got to us. It was cooked to the right colors and the ingredients were excellent but it was clearly not served just out of the oven.

The sight of the cucaraches was better not!

By barbara g |

We were for dinner in August, we ordered pizza that compared to the Italian one there is no comparison but compared to the many Americans is good, the only thing that I found disgusting and I repeat disgusting, so much so that I had to get up and not finish my dinner, in fact I went literally sideways, are the cucaraches under the beams that come out from under attracted probably by the food crumbs that falls! After the bill (so not to get the discount) we pointed out the unpleasant situation, at least for us, they told us that they know and that the problem is of the whole little Italy, which is not true because the night before we were in another restaurant and the problem there was not!

Negronis

By SNDRPRKR |

Only went in for happy hour but really enjoyed the negronis, calamaries and prawns with beans. Will certainly return to try the pizzas, they looked great

Great food and service

By David-Vero |

Everything was great here. I was seated immediately outside on the patio. A fellow immediately brought me water and bread with some real good olive oil and pesto. The server was prompt. I ordered the lasagna; meat, béchamel sauce, ricotta, mozzarella, and Bolognese sauce. It was over the top. The server checked back often. Great food and service.

Tried to rip us off

By djl1987 |

The wait staff tried to rip us off. After my wife, 4 year old and I arrived during the “happy hour” period, we ordered some recommend cocktails and appetisers along with mains from the menu. The food was delicious. But when the bill came the drinks were charged at full price, when we questioned this with the waiter he seemed aggravated that we asked. When the bill came back the second time it was still incorrect. We asked to change a $10 bill to have the correct change and was advised that they didn’t have the change. I thought this to be stage that they would not have x2 $5 bills. When we went to pay the bill we questioned for the second time about the miss charge on our bill with another staff member (whom also took our drink orders) and his reply was that we had ordered them outside of happy hour... we did not order outside of happy hour, our drinks were not delivered till after it finished. Not our fault. After saying ok it was his fault he would fix it he then didn’t give the correct change and spoke so fast that it was hard to understand what it was that he said. I walked away thinking that something was amiss, after thinking about the amount we gave and the change given we were again over charged by $5. When I returned and asked the question all he said was I didn’t think you wanted the change. (He said that they don’t accept coins as payment) so I reluctantly agreed even tho we wanted to use our coins as we are leaving in the morning. Mind you the 20% gratitude that was already included in the bill. We spoke to someone down the street whom said that they probably thought with us being from out of town/country that they could over charge and we wouldn’t notice. Very very disappointed in this restaurant and definitely DO NOT recommend going here.

Happy Hour dinner!

By Ronnjonna |

It depends on how one looks at it, but Happy Hour „dinner“has been a reasonable choice for us as retired, fixed income persons who love to travel. Sorrento in San Diego has a happy hour that is perfect and oh, so delicious. We ordered (and enjoyed) shrimp with white beans, polenta con fungi, ceasar salad, with $6 glasses of Pinot noir and Chardonnay. Honestly the food is so authentic and well prepared- it was a pleasure to eat with all the senses! Servers are friendly and helpful. And, last but not least, thank you for cloth napkins- a small thing that contributes to the feeling that one is dining, not just shoveling food in. We will return during our month here in San Diego. Keep up the good work!

A little snobby but a good restaurant

By Rorojo79 |

We ordered two appetizers for our dinner here but the server kept asking us what we were having for an entree. Once we said we were just having appetizers we never saw him again.

Real Italian

By Cotero99 |

We ate here for first time and it was delicious. All the food we ordered was great. Cannoli was best one I had since NYC.

Best Italian food in San Diego

By InToonwithWife |

Fantastic food and all staff were friendly. The ensured our meal and experience were truly memorable and enjoyable. Loved the ambience

Food was great!

By DJCrowell |

We were told we could be sitting late due to being very crowded. We were sitting immediately. The quinoa salad was excellent. My wife had lobster ravioli and I had veal ravioli. Both were very good. Highly recommend this place.

Very authentic Italian

By Mike A |

In this Gringos opinion this place feels like and tastes Italian. I wide variety of dishes not just pizza and pasta. Many vegetarian and gluten free meals. Also chicken and beef. Very reasonable prices $18-$25

Sorrento tops

By Marilena C |

As a rule, I don't go to Italian restaurants abroad, luckily in San Diego I tried Sorrento. Tasty food, kind and helpful Italian staff with every request, it felt like being in Italy. Try it.

Amazing

By nmanzi1 |

I’ve been to Italy twice and the food here challenges some of the best food I’ve ever had. Amazing fresh pasta, quick service and authentic servers. Truly amazing experience and a must if coming to Little Italy.

Poor service even the food was so so

By Freedom450245 |

Poor service, had to wait for long time to get our one course meal served and took also long time to get our bill. It was worse that they put 20% tips in the bill. If we did not pay attention we would not have noticed and gave more tips in additional as in other restaurant. Whoever come to this restaurant, pay attention... The broccolli soup was really so so, while the scallop was over cooked making it rubbery...

Great pizza! Ok gluten feee options

By Paul B |

Great pizza! We stopped here as we walked through Little Italy because they offered gluten free pasta (for my wife who is GF). The rest of the family shared a few pizzas. One pizza was good for 2-3 people, and had a nice wood fired charred crust. The GF pasta was ok, a bit rubbery but par for the course with GF pastas. They had a good beer selection. We ate in the outdoor section, and it had a very European feel to it. Our server, also the bartender, was fantastic. He made us feel very welcome.

Excellent!

By Michael F |

Amazing food and service! We had two pasta dishes which were both excellent, and were looked after with complementary focaccia...

A night out in Little Italy

By Gary C |

The food was great, the service was very good and the location was excellent. The Sorrento was very good, we didn't book but being a busy night they moved tables to fit us in. An enjoyable experience and highly recommended.

Digestive problems

By John D |

My wife and I had digestive problems immediately after eating lunch here. We shared the pear salad and pappardelle bolognese. Obviously we won’t go back

Excelent food and Service

By danielarochav |

Amazing Pasta and Pizza, very good service is my 5 Stars in San Diego. Ahhh good prices 😁 if you visit SD you have to visit Sorrento

Wow and more wow. Gotta go!

By Randall |

Hard to even nitpick this place. Food was excellent. Service was outstanding. Pricing was reasonable for what you got and the atmos was a delight. We sat on the patio and it was comfy and family like. Loved it. We will go back soon. The flatbreads are to die for.

Too good to eat it all

By Dananviv |

It is rare for me not to be able to eat the dinner that I order, but after eating the delicious bread with that amazing sauce, and partaking of an appetizer (that was shared with three other people), I was unable to eat the seafood risotto which was amazing. So be warned, if you want to eat the dinner that you order, do not order anything beforehand :-)

Great spot tucked in Little Italy

By t0nyvee |

This is such a great Italian spot in the middle of San Diego, right in Little Italy. I really like the pasta dishes with gorgonzola. Really authentic tasting. Prices were on point, but what you do pay for, they deliver on. Excellent Italian here. I love to park nearby at an Instapark lot and explore after!

Great pizza and calzone

By McFerrid |

What a great dinner. Had calamari as an appetizer and a craft beer but by far the highlight was the pizza and calzone dishes. Eating outdoors on a beautiful evening in San Diego, it could not have been a better dining experience.

Something for everyone

By Maria G |

We stopped in Sorrento for a light dinner. The menu was extensive serving everything from appetizers to pizza to pasta to a variety of fish, chicken and beef. We ordered a pepperoni pizza to share. It was excellent...thin crust, with a generous amount of pepperoni. Prior to the pizza, my husband ordered a Noel of minestrone. It was spectacular....plenty of carrots, green beans, potatoes, spinach in a light broth. I had the house salad, which was pretty standard, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and a novel twist...shaved fennel. The wine by the glass runs from 9 dollars up to around 12. While most Little Italy restaurants have outdoor sidewalk seating, Sorrento has a lovely outdoor patio away from the sidewalk so passersby don't "share" your meal and conversation. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a fine Italian meal.

Great Italian Food!

By stacy j |

My friend had the lasagne and I had the ribeye steak, salad and parmesan fries. The fresh bread and marinara sauce was phenomenal!

So disappointed :/

By Ellie H |

We came here for dinner on a Friday night, just the two of us. The server was friendly and professional, which was great but the food was not. My boyfriend ordered the Cioppino, which was described as having a "fresh tomato white wine sauce". Nowhere was it indicated that it was spicy. As soon as the dishes arrived, before we even tasted anything, the server came back and asked how it looked. It all looked great but we had not tried it yet. After, my boyfriend tasted his dish and it was extremely spicy, with chilies in it. The server did not come back until I was also finished with my dish and my boyfriend barely ate any of his. We told her that it was unfortunately, very spicy. We ordered dessert as well but when the bill came, no discount had been offered or dessert taken care of. We were pretty disappointed as the dish was expensive. He ended up with an upset stomach the rest of the night. Definitely not worth the price we paid here.

Nice family Italian dinner

By Rick R |

Looked for a Friday night little Italy option and came across reviews of Sorrento. We were seated immediately just before our reservations time. Very friendly and engaging waiter. Well used and extensive menu for drinks, appetizers, desserts, plus daily specials. A couple cocktails and a glass of wine were good choices. We ordered 2 specials and one recommended entree. They were all tasty and good portions, but particularly memorable. I’d recommend as a mid range pasta restaurant.

How do you chose in a restaurant neighborhood?

By Mike C |

Not sure how to chose but we have been there twice and both were great (Salud was the other one). In a neighborhood like little Italy or any other food neighborhood it it is not good it will not last long...this one is very good. The people are fantastic, very accommodating...shared plates, catch a plane service, very attentive. The bartender is a mixologist with an amazing amount of items to add to alcohol and makes very good very creative drinks...no just slushing booze, he cares and it shows. As do the entire staff. Oh ya! It is a restaurant lol! The food? Absolutely fantastic!

Fantastic real Italian food

By Garald C |

We were delighted to find the Sorrento. Their menu was amazing. It was like sitting in the Tonnarella in Naples again. Fabrizio and the staff treated us like famiglia. So much better than all the surrounding tourist traps with mediocre food.

Cold Food - Poor Service

By John M |

Cold food - poor service- run away from this establishment. You’ll regret paying for it! I can’t believe our poor experience. Went to enjoy little Italy and food to get the worst food service ever! Never going back!

Yum

By kdhenshaw7696 |

Service was a bit slow- hostess ended up taking care of us. Food was good. My daughters was delicious and mine was good. I’d list the names but the menu won’t load online. Definitely recommend.

Great Italian Food in San Diego

By louislar |

Great food. Friendly service and pleasant atmosphere. Restaurant is ideally located in Little Italy San Diego and the food is home made. Portions are very generous and pricing is reasonable for this area.

Don’t get the cheesecake

By Laura K |

never eaten here but stopped by for dessert. Limited options and the hostess recommended the cheesecake. Got it to go as we live nearby. Upon opening packaging, bit of a small slice, not very appealing in appearance. Maybe it would taste better? Unfortunately, didn’t taste like cheesecake, more floury tasting. Not worth the price. Would not recommend and won’t return for dessert.

Great Food

By JamesGS |

The food was indeed great, the wine decent and reasonably priced, and the service was wonderful. Keep on going guys, great job!

Very Good Food, but overpriced

By MDP_Love_Traveling |

The staff are not so nice and the service was very slow. Both seafood and Pasta we ordered were fresh and good, but way overpriced.

Outstanding Seafood Fetticini

By KWAJT |

Really great pasta made on site. Great seafood pasta. Others enjoyed parmigiana. Modest but OK wine by the glass list. Wines a bit spendy.

Great food!

By Papa Arnie |

Loved this quaint spot. Nice people and fantastic food. Don’t get in a hurry. But at this kind of place you shouldn’t be in a hurry anyway. The calamari appetizer was the best I’ve ever had and wife and I split a pasta dish. Just great!

Little Italy

By Jean A |

Our first time to visit this place. We had pizza and pasta and both were very good. After dinner we had to try the gelato and cannoli. Very pleasant experience.

My favorite restaurant in Little Italy

By Liz H |

Almost everything is made from scratch; pasta, mozzarella, bruschetta, limoncello, etc. The atmosphere is great, outside but off the street so you feel like you're in a cave, similar to a restaurant we ate at in Sorrento, Italy. The waitstaff was friendly, fast and very attentive. I will go back to San Diego just to eat at this restaurant. Wonderful!!

Awesome Penne Arrabiata!

By Slubby |

We really enjoyed our supper here.the Penne Arrabiata was absolutely delicious, one of the best dishes I’ve had anywhere. My wife had a an excellent salad and we shared a bottle of wine. All of this for about $65. The location is on India, near Cedar in Little Italy.

Waiter Fabrizio = rudest man

By Fiona O |

Not happy with this restaurant at all. Our waiter was plain rude to us. There were five of us dining and one girls meal was served 20mins before the rest. When I asked for an explanation he tried to fob me off then gave out to a runner in front of us, very unprofessional. I have to say the runners were v polite and very good at their job. When refilling our drinks he blatantly snubbed one of the girls and left her waiting 10mins after everyone else. At the end of the meal he almost threw the bill at us, and gave a sarcastic wave down the table when we were leaving. The food was actually very good, such a pity when you are badly treated, the food doesn't make up for it.

Very good Italian restaurant

By Angelica S |

My husband and I had a very nice time at this restaurant last weekend. He had the fish of the day and I had the beef lasagna...I ordered it al forno. In addition we ordered 1 beer and 2 martinis total without the tip was 60.88. A bit steep, yes, but the restaurant is in the heart of little Italy. I was impressed with the staff. From the very friendly hostess to the waitress. I would highly recommend this restaurant. My husband and I enjoy good service and this restaurant did not disappoint. THANK YOU Sorrento I truly appreciate your friendly and professional attitude. Grazi mille.

Very good authentic Italian food.

By Rebecca M |

Walked into here on our first night in San Diego. The place looked busy so we decided to give it a try. The hostess was unfriendly and quite brisk with us, but once we were seated the service was much better. Our servers were very friendly and attentive and recommended us two dishes from the specials. The portion sizes were big American style sizes and we definitely didn’t need the appetiser! Our pasta was home made, fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend.

Authentic

By Davin D |

Take the short walk to the most authentic Italian food spot in San Diego. Try not to over do it with the wine and antipasto...

W Italy!

By Rosanna R |

Absolutely worth trying! As a pasta lover and very wary of trying pasta abroad, I left there very satisfied! Excellent gorgonzola gnocchi! Delicious pizza!!!!!! Warm, friendly and helpful staff... in short, it felt like being in Italy!!!!

One of the best happy hours

By thenewtraveler |

Came here for happy hour with a couple friends and was shocked at how reasonably priced everything was. I'm a bruschetta enthusiast and I must say it was delicious. The bread and oil beforehand was already amazing, it was an herb and olive oil dip that I couldn't stop eating. My friend had ordered a Hawaiian pizza which was even better at $6 for happy hour. The bartender was so friendly, I can't quite remember his name but he was efficient, he brought our drinks with perfect timing as we finished several glasses of wine, he inquired if we would like another pour before our glasses were completely empty. Definitely will be back!

Poor seating and 20% service charge included?!

By Keith_Porter27 |

The seating we got here was poor as it was right by the washrooms despite us making a reservation. One of the servers told us “you guys actually have a really good spot” after we asked to go to a different outside table. Then we were charged a 20% service charge which totalled to 14 dollars. That was quite a bit of money considering we were only 3 people. Also, the bread was quite bad as it tasted like superstore bread. I was quite disappointed with this place.

Excellent

By Silence_777 |

Excellent pizza, lot of choice on the menu, very good customer service and good value for money. Highly recommend it!

Nice place to have dinner.

By C. Landa V. |

Nice place to have dinner. Right at Little Italy. The service was very good and the food was great. The restaurant is kind of uncomfortable. Would have liked better to sit inside but there was no room.

Nice Pizza

By Teresa S |

We make it a mission to find the best local place for pizza in any city we visit. The medium pizza is enough for two who are not really very hungry. The wine is pretty expensive. Best we could do for a so-so bottle was $32. Service felt like the real-deal Italian.

Lovely

By TravelwKiddies |

This was our second visit to Sorrentos while on vacation. Loved it both times. The food is to die for and the service incredibly friendly and helpful. This is our must-do when visiting San Diego. I’ve never been to Italy so I don’t know how authentic the food is but we found it amazing. Best meal we’ve had on our vacay (and we just got off a Disney cruise) I should also mention that Sorrentos is very family friendly. We took our kids (7 and 9) and there were families there with much smaller kids. There is no kids menu but the portions are so large that we turned it into a family style meal. The patio is lovely. Shaded and with a European feel.

Truly Italian

By OLEG V |

Very good experience. Food made to Italian standards - crisp crust pizza and al dente pasta. Very good staff.

Awesome Happy Hour

By Diane W |

I thought the happy hour pizza for $8.00 would be quite small. Boy was I surprised when it came out and was a regular size pizza. I could not eat it all and took some back to the hotel.

Happy Hour in Little Italy

By dagoose9500 |

Enjoyed a nice Happy Hour at this little restaurant on India Street. Mai Tais were very tasty. Did not try the main dinner items. Just a salad and a beverage thos time around. Friendly staff, and with a daily Happy Hour, worth a return visit. Nicely done!

Very Good Dinner at Little Italy

By chasedreamz |

We visited here on a very busy weekend and there was a big wait to get in. Two ladies who were managing the waiting guests and queue did an excellent job of managing guests. We ordered following : 1) Seafood Pasta : It was very good , 4 stars ! 2) Margarita Pizza : It was also very good but we prefer more crispier and crunch in crust : 4 stars ! 3) Chicak Picatta and Chicken Marsala both were awesome . 5 stars ! 4) Tiramisu was super awesome. 5 stars ! The complientary bread that they served us were cold and dry :( (big reason I took a star off this review) , pesto sauce that was served with it was good. Overall , we had a very good dinner here. 4 stars !!

Good eats

Good food, nice that restaurant opens up the front to seem your eating in the fresh air. Waiter was friendly and gave good recommendations.

Our favorite in Little Italy

By Erik M |

We live around the corner and this is our "go to" place in Little Italy. We always bring our two year old twins and they have such a great family vibe for us. The menu has classics and a bit more adventurous specials that change daily. A great bar with ample selections including some awesome Ports. Sitting outside on their patio, enjoying a family dinner and munching on pizza and ravioli is one of my "happy places".

Upscale casual deliciousness

By erin_lsc |

A friend and I enjoyed a lovely lunch on their dog-friendly covered patio (indoor seating also available). With attentive but not overbearing waitstaff, and an excellent selection on the menu, we were exceptionally pleased with our choice of restaurant. I highly recommend trying one of their cocktails created with herbs and produce from their own garden: the Fresh Wave and Green Goddess were delicious! The linguine nere and the gnocchi with walnut pesto were both perfectly prepared and generously portioned. Lunch for two plus 2 cocktails ran about $60.

Great food!

By ALH57 |

With so many Italian restaurants it was difficult to choose but the menu looked good and more importantly they had an available table inside. The complimentary bread with a pesto dip was a nice touch. I chose the pasta with shrimp, scallops and chilli sauce and it was delicious. The portion size was generous and there was an abundance of prawns and scallops. I was also impressed that the food was served piping hot. The Pino Grigio was delicious and was a large serving for $8.50. Service was friendly and prompt. I'd highly recommend this restaurant.

Sorrento - Little Italy

Very tasty pasta dishes, large portions. I had penne arribiata with chicken, which was spicier than usual but very tasty. Caprese salad starter was good too. Service great.

Service was amazing. We had 3-4 waiters continually topping up water and bringing bread! We shared a pizza and some pasta and was one of the best ever! Highly recommended!

Great food poor service

By Larry F |

We just got back from Sorrento. It is located in San Diego's Little ltaly. I ordered a pizza and my wife ordered pasta. The food was great!!! Loved the way they fixed the pizza. Each slice had an individual ingredient and was not only unique but delicious. The sea food pasta my wife had was also great. She is normally not a big scallops fan but... She loved the small very tender scallops in the dish. Now for the service. It was slow and very non attentive. In fact once we asked for our check it took over 40 mins before our server finally deliverd the check. He walked by our table over and over again completely ignoring us. A big party had come in and instead of closing our check out he spent his time running past us setting up tables and moving chairs. Even after several reminders we wanted our check. That said the food was fantastic.

Worst Service Ever!

By Ladyter |

I wish I read the yelp reviews before going to this restaurant you can sort yelp by the lowest review so many said it's the worst service ever experienced the waiter /bartender put us back on the hottest day in San Diego has ever had by the oven where they make pizza I moved and he yelled at me and he said we only move people once during happy hour I'm not going to move you again there were three of us he refused to split the checks he said you figured out yourself I said I can't figure out the tax I don't know what it is it wasn't fair that we had to split it ourselves we all were paying with credit cards some of us ordered more than the other I ordered something called a fried ball he brought it to me completely flattened and mushy he did that intentionally because I complained about where we were sitting he didn't want to be bothered I don't know how they stay in business with their service you figured out yourself I said I can't figure out the tax I don't know what it is it wasn't fair that we had to split it ourselves we all were paying with credit cards some of us ordered more than the other I ordered something called a fried ball he brought it to me completely flattened and mushy he did that intentionally because I complained about where we were sitting he didn't want to be bothered I don't know how they stay in business with their bad service Many other choices!

Amazing foo and gelato!

By 1111jesj |

My family and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at this restaurant, from the fresh bread and marinara sauce brought to the table first, to the variety of sandwiches and pasta, all of us enjoyed our meals. The icing on the cake was the to die for gelato which we purchased on our way out and ate as we walked back to our hotel.

Amazing Italian Restaurant

By Bert S |

Sorrento has a very large menu. We tried a calamari appetizer (calamari, shrimp and zucchini) which was very large and very good. We also had 2 main courses - which turned out to be much too much food! The portions here are huge, and the prices are reasonable. We had Tuna (Tono in Agrodolce) and Chicken (Pollo Millegusti) main courses. They were superb, and in portions much greater than we could eat. Sorrento is about as good as it gets. Highly recommended!

Tasty food, gluten free options

By Paige D |

After getting off a 4.5 hour plane from Cleveland, I was craving something satisfying. The concierge recommended little Italy, a short walk from the hotel, but being gluten free, I was a little skeptical. But to my surprise, one of the cute patio places boasted gluten free items, so I bit. My roommate and I were sat at a table in the corner of the restaurant and while we both made jokes about “no one puts baby in the corner” we were in fact, forgotten. We were starving! And after about 20-25 min of waiting for a server to acknowledge us for drinks, 15 min after we put in our food order the server asked us to remind him of our orders again. It was very disappointing but the food was not! I ordered the special - risotto with sea scallops, calamari and black squid ink. I was super shocked, however when the entire plate of risotto was black but don’t let that scare you, it was AWESOME! I couldn’t stop eating it. The portions were large and I almost ate the whole thing! My advice: head to this restaurant when they’re not busy or if you have some time to kill.

ciapino was great

Great location and we were able to eat in the courtyard, they could have been a little more giving with the bread

Crowded and Noisy!

By Robert S |

Dinner in Little Italy, San Diego. Mob scene inside. Loud and raucous diners. Asked for a quite table. There are none here. Difficult to have a discussion with someone right next to you at a table for four. Food was ok. Didn't find it amazing. I had read that the artichoke app was to die for. It wasn't. About $40 per person. There are so many restaurants in this area! I'd try another one.

This was a good choice

By Jdp60 |

Pleasantly surprised with this place. Great food, home make I’m guessing. Cold beer. Very reasonable priced. Steak for $23, unheard of and delicious. Pasta dishes for less then $20 and more then you can eat. Just so ya know we were there for lunch. Prices may be a bit different for diner. I highly recommend this place.

Great Lunch

By Tom P |

Had a great casual lunch today, meatball sub and a salad for under $10. Our server Raffaele was very nice and professional.

Delicious!

By JulieALS |

We wanted to get away from the convention center area as there was a game that night as well as a large conference. Little Italy is a short Uber ride from there. My coworker had a chicken dish and I had lasagna. The food and service were good. The lasagna was enough for two servings! It was nice sitting outside.

Mama mia buonno!!

By Viclo03 |

My wife and I sat at the patio it was a little chill that night but they had some heaters that make us feel great, the food is fantastic we had a carpaccio, Pasta and some wine, the atmosphere is very Italian, the waiter make feel like in Italy and to finish don't forget to ask for a limoncello.

My wife and I (plus 3.5 month sleeping son) went for dinner at Sorrento tonight and had a beautiful evening. We did not have a reservation but had our name put on a list and waited for a table. In under the advised 15min waiting time we were seated and greeted by our delightful waiter. We were given a great table, out of the way, ensuring no one would bump into our precious cargo. My wife had the rack of lamb special (excellent and perfectly cooked) whilst I had the age old favourite of Carbonara. It was also fantastic and a very generous (large) sized portion. Service was friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. Delightful evening - definitely recommend a trip to Sorrento.

Nice atmosphere and food

We had dinner here during our first night in San Diego and we really liked this place. We really liked the outdoor seating area and the vibe of Little Italy. The food was nice, I had the shrimp pasta and my boyfriend had the lobster ravioli and both portions were generous.

Excellent Pizza

Excellent pizza, you'll think you really are in Italy! Like most restaurant in Little Italy this place offers al fresco or indoor dining. Lots to choose from on their menu, but this time we had their "Pizza Capriccio." A great decision, along with a glass of chianti!

The desserts were amazing!

We had already enjoyed dinner in Old Town upon arriving here. We stopped in for dessert and met a local who shared his favorite spot, Sorrento. We had gelato and grabbed pastries to have at the condo the next morning. WOW.. so good!

Don't bother!

There are so many good Italian restaurants in Little Italy but this one doesn't really measure. Service was below average too.

Bad idea

Premise: I never go to Italian restaurants abroad and I should have continued with this choice of mine. In San Diego the liveliest and nicest place in the evening is the Little Italy neighborhood and so we stayed at the Sorrento. Normal prices (expensive) but terrible, raw pizza. They brought me another one but the cooking didn't change. Impossible to eat. They also had not marked an order, when we pointed it out they remedied it but the pizza that arrived was also inedible. The place wasn't very full but perhaps there is confusion in the management of the kitchen and the dining room. I much preferred a pizza eaten in a remote place where they had not only cooked it well but also made it very thin

Great restaurant in Little Italy with patio

On a relatively hot evening, it was nice to sit on an outdoor covered patio and watch those around me being served food that smelled and looked great. I ordered from the daily specials which had a wide variety of interesting and unusual dishes. (The regular menu looked good, too). Portions were large so I passed on dessert, but it was tempting.

Excellent Italian

We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food at Sorrentos. The place was packed but service was quite fast. I had simple spaghetti and meatballs. It was excellent. My grandson loved the pizza:). They have a variety of Sorbetto and desserts. My mousse cake was a little dry but my husband devoured his sorbetto. There is very nice tile work to enjoy and there is outdoor seating but it was so cold no one was choosing to sit out of doors.

Delicious pasta in lovely setting

We celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary here. Food was delicious and the service was great. My husband had the chianti and I had a craving for a more tropical cocktail , our waiter prepared something special with my liquor preferences and the result was awesome. We had the lasagna and the lobster ravioli.. wow!! Will definately recomend.

The food at Sorrento was fantastic as was the service. We enjoyed our meals and would highly reccomend this resturant. I eat gluten free and the server was very knowledgable as to what I could eat.
