Pricey but worth it

By Gergana |

Came here with a couple of friends for my birthday. They treated us so well! The food was delicious and our waitress was super friendly & knowledgeable. We decided to do the omakase menu, which basically means you eat what they serve you. The portions were small but there were many of them. We were there for 2.5hrs so be ready to chill for a while. Plenty of time to get several glasses of sake :) Now, this place is not cheap and the omakase is $175/person. Not including drinks. So be prepared to pay. But we did not regret a single dollar. I think they might have had a valet out front but, honestly, plenty of free parking in the area, including a covered garage. Overall, we can't afford to come back every week but highly recommend, especially for a special occasion.

Some of the best I’ve ever had

By Ellen P |

This was unexpectedly some of the best sushi I’ve ever had (and I’ve been to some of the best in NYC and Boston). Flavors blended nicely. Some subtle, not too overpowering over the fish. Presentation was excellent- a prelude to the party that will happen in your mouth. (I apologize for the lack of pictures - the sushi leapt in my mouth before I was able to take pics of it!)

Best Sushi in Austin

By Christopher C |

Soto is the best Sushi and Nigiri in all of Austin right now. While Uchi gets all the attention the truth is that it is resting on its laurels , and that Soto is by far superior today. Trufle Maki Toro is one of the best dishes in all of Austin .

I wouldn't leave it to the chef again

You've heard of 'All American Rejects'. We felt like we were 'All Uchi Rejects' when we had omakase at Soto. We had a late reservation at Uchi and didn't want to wait so we took our chances with Soto and were greatly disappointed. I might have been spoiled by the omakase at Uchi and Uchiko, so the first omakase here did not leave a good impression on me at all. There were some good pieces such as the oyster, the crab, the ebi, the wagyu. The rest was just 'fishy.' Most of the fish pieces had very similar flavor and didn't taste fresh at all. Together with the not-so-soft rice, they left my taste buds not wanting more. No wow factor. Nada. Even though I've frequented Soto a few times and enjoyed their food, I wouldn't come back here for omakase. I expected more for the price tag.

When we walked in the door the first person was a very nice greeter. She seated us exactly were we wanted at the very nice Bar were you can see the food but it was still a wonderful atmosphere.

WILL BE BACK FOR CATIE ASAP

By Greg C |

Dropped in just to have a quick lunch before running some afternoon errands with the girlfriend and was utterly amazed at the service we received from Catie and her trainee Frank. Catie’s thorough descriptions of menu items and extreme attention to detail (including my girlfriends Parosmia) are such refreshing touches to a dining experience - we can’t WAIT to return!!

Easily as good if not better than Uchi

By C G |

Easily as good if not better than Uchi. Cat is the best waitress! We loved her wine recommendations. Their signature plates we love are the chili hamachi, wagyu gyoza, lobster tempura and salmon over fire. We’ve been many times before Covid - the omakaze is worth it too. They have outdoor seating for covid.

Very good! Would highly recommend!

Very good and high quality food! Surprised not that many reviews on trip advisor because this place was great! Sushi was really good!

You get what you pay for

I’ve always dipped my sushi in soy sauce. But soy sauce is not on the table, like a good restaurant does not have salt on the table. Once you take a bite, you completely understand why. Try the “ chip”. So many flavors bursting. Try the wagyu nigiri , like butter melting in your mouth. My favorite was the chef five piece nigiri, it’s an experience in it self. Sure the cost was more than your typical sushi place. But the sushi was on a different level. You get what you pay for.

$450 dinner and kicked out of our table

By Michelle O |

We spent $450 here, and it was not worth it. The sizes of the fish were small and pretty tasteless, and the manager was extremely rude. We were told we had our table from 530-7pm, and at 630pm the manager told us a family at the bar had been waiting 30 minutes for OUR table. According to my math, we had only 1 hour to enjoy our $450 meal and a bottle of sake. We’ve been coming to Soto since it opened, but we’ve watched it degrade in terms of quality and service. We will not he coming back.

One of the best!

We stumbled into this place which turned out to be one of the best sushi restaurants we've ever had. Fresh and unique cuts of sushi like amberjack, kanpachi and Hokkaido uni. Friendly and helpful staff. They also have an uni pasta dish that should not be missed. Really enjoyable meal and worth a visit!

Tasty Truffle Touches But Only 3 out of 5

By RJillMaxwellAZ |

When you’re a very spoiled sushi eater, everything matters. Service, freshness, options, and price. Server Jennifer was delightful, knowledgeable, and on top of our needs. The menu options were great, mixing traditional with creative, as well as fresh tasting and delicious. (We love truffle anything!!!) Now we’ve just one area left: price. Remember I said I was spoiled? WAAAAY overpriced!!!!!! I eat very fresh sushi at least monthly AND love truffle everything; still at over $100/per person (including just 2 cocktails and 1 bottle of saki) PLUS tip, we felt a bit cheated, quite honestly. Soto may want to reconsider its pricing structure before Austin/guests catch on and revolt. May be too late already, however. For a Friday night, the restaurant was not all that busy as it is. A small adjustment would yield greater returns.
