Insanely-good fish tacos!

By Bert S |

We were there for happy hour on a Tuesday, which is "Taco Tuesday", where tacos are $2.99. The tacos are fantastic. The mahi is marinated in teriyaki and pineapple, and is VERY tasty. Combined with a white-sauce and chopped cabbages, these tacos are big and great. There are many cocktails on the happy-hour menu and beer and wine are discounted.

Super Seafood, Drinks and Oceanview

Super Seafood, Drinks and Oceanview. Great SwordFish, Nice Happy Hour offerings, Near the Ocean Pier and on the Ocean on the main street - Great Location. Try the Bloody Marys-some of the best ever!

Watch the surfers from the second floor restaurant

By William A |

If you never have visited Ocean Beach, drop what you're doing now and go to the beach. Stuck in a 1960's time warp, this section of SD is not to be missed. Directly on the beach is the restaurant serving fish tacos and other other items. I've ordered grilled shrimp tacos twice and loved them while watching the waves roll into the beach.

Attentive staff

By Jon N |

The procedure at this bar and grille is to order at bar, take a number, and sit down to wait for delivery of food. I was very impressed at the attentiveness of the staff, knowing we were new and they took very good care of us.....not just the servers, but also the bar tender. We sat at the second level of the bar and grille.....wonderful view of the pier and many surfers out that day.....Alcoholic beverages very good. Tacos (shrimp, mahi-mahi) very good. Wings very good.

Tacossss

By Dche85 |

I highly suggest coming here and making a taco sampler. They have every type of taco to choose from. We ordered five different tacos and they were all delicious. They also had this sauce on them that is making my mouth water now. Go get tacos!!

Great Eats, good cocktails, reasonable prices!

By MAFestus |

This is nothing fancy. Great options for seating when not crowded. There are bar seats outside, a patio area with some really cool trees that offer shade and indoor high top tables. Service initially not great as we had to literally ask for a waitress, but once we did, she was great. Very helpful with cocktail choices etc. The calamari is not what you would normally expect, as it is large strips, almost like chicken fingers vs the calamari rings. The fish tacos are amazing! The sauce on them very good. Bloody Mary is very nice! comes with lots of garnishes and the mix is not too thick. The best thing is how reasonably priced it is! Would recommend and would go again!

Love this place

By JAMA293 |

Have visited South Beach Bar and Grill on several Oyster Fridays, which run 7 pm to 2 am. Oysters were fresh bluepoint, and delicious. Also enjoyed wahoo fish tacos, very substantial (for the price) and delicious. Daily beer special is also a great value! Enjoyed sitting outside on the upper deck, watching the street action below. On Friday nights, the place is very crowded, especially the upstairs. You place your order at the bar, and it is delivered to you in a reasonable amount of time. It can be difficult to find parking, but we have always managed to find some within two or three blocks away.

Famous Fish Tacos

By rvanheertum |

An oldie but goodie. The Mahi Mahi (not fried) is what made them famous, but shrimp taco and lobster taco are also awesome. Good selection of beers and great views of the ocean. But don't expect upscale.

Enjoy the sunset on the terrace, with a fish taco in one hand and a beer in the other!

By Cathrine P |

If you ever visit Ocean Beach, please don’t leave before you visit this place! Me and my fiancé enjoyed the most romantic sunsets from the terrace, feasting on some amazing fish tacos (I can recommend the Mahi-mahi one)! Non- fancy only pure enjoyment!!

Great view & food

By Errin M |

This is a clutch spot especially if you can get a spot on the upper deck. Talk about all the hippie people watching! On Thursday they have cheap taco deals on every taco except the lobster. They also have happy hour that starts at 3pm & includes $4 drafts. There are a lot of beers to choose from at the special price. It's a total steal! Heads up, you order at the bar & seat yourselves outside. The bartenders here hustle - mad props. It's a great location & there is a free lot right next door.. Just be patient & call on your good karma to hit you up when waiting for a space. Def sunset spot recomendation!

Delicious

By Gina M |

We had the best time eating a late lunch/early dinner here. Sat outside on the upper floor at the counter. View of the beach. Delicious food (no seriously. Delicious). Mahi tacos might change your life.

Someone... ANYONE !!???!!!

By BluewaterGypsy |

Management please... Dirty tables everywhere and no one to clear. People walking in waiting for a clean space to sit and finally giving up that. With no answers or even interest from staff who were busy sitting at the bar chatting and eating. On a Saturday night before Easter all was a mess. Hopelessly!!!

Go for the view!

By DDDFJD |

Interesting for first timers that you have to place your order before you find a seat. Unsure of the menu but the fish tacos were highly recommended. I ordered the logistino lobster taco & it was AMAZING. I also tried the Mahi-Mahi taco & it was just so so. My sister had the volcano shrimp & ate every bite. My other sister had the cheese quesadilla. It was very large & good she reported. Cokes were watery & for $2.95 they should not be. Beautiful view if you can snag a seat oceanfront which we were able to do.

Great food

By David_Sabael |

Came here for a late lunch with my family. I had eaten earlier and wasn't that hungry so just ordered a blood orange IPA, seared Ahi starter and cup of clam chowder. The huge size of the Ahi was a pleasant surprise after ordering something similar at a different restaurant and just getting 3 little slices. This was about 3/4" thick and the size of my hand. It was well-seasoned and seared perfectly, served with a wasabi-soy dip - just delicious. The clam chowder was good and the cup was filled to overflowing. My daughter, wife and sister in-law all had fish meals that were very good and more than they could finish. Even the fries were very good. The view looking out over the Pacific and the Ocean Beach fishing pier is very nice if you are sitting upstairs.

Wife's Birthday

By jimd4469 |

Took the wife to San Diego for her Birthday. Found the South beach Restaurant with completely relaxed ambiance. Beach views. Quickest, friendliest service ever.We found the Shucked oysters, fried clam strips, fried wahoo fish tacos on flour tortillas, all exceptional. What makes this restraunt so exceptional is the service.all the servers seemed good but, We had "john" las our server, he took the time to explain, recommend and expedite our food kept an eye on us. Hint. Ask for JOHN.

Great food, great view

By malaua1 |

Best experience. We arrived at ocean beach and wanted to find something nearby and gave this place a try. It was a perfect experience sitting on the balcony watching surfers and eating great foot for a great price. Highly recommend the mahi mahi and Baja tacos.

Big change

By K R |

I first reviewed this place in 2015. After visiting twice in the last few weeks I have to revise my review. Fish tacos not nearly as good. The clam strips still yummy. Service is almost nonexistent. They have completely eliminated table ordering on the 1st floor. The upper level is being promoted more. The view is great from up there. They do offer a decent happy hour. It's just not what is use to be especially the fish tacos.

GREAT FOOD & GREAT PEOPLE

By Lauren O |

Best fish tacos ever!! Since I'm from Ireland I was abit scared to try them but they were amazing!! We had the mahi mahi and the Baja tacos and they were delicious!! Great service from Danny and the manager joey also, great guys who taught us a lot about OB! Definitely will return !

Cornerstone Taco Joint

By Justin A |

I used to frequent this place all the time. Staff is fun, laid back. Food, especially tacos, are incredible. Drinks are on point and not shy. Music is always great. Vibe always keeps your eyes open. Parking is easy but the unfortunate consequence of that fact is an obstructing view of the water and pier. Patrons are always entertaining but sometimes inspire confrontations, usually minor. Overall, its one of the better spots to grab some quick, relatively cheap but tasty eats and drinks.

One of my favorite beachside restaurants in Ocean Beach, San Diego

By MarkKatherineL |

Wait-staff exceptional, fish taco's not to be missed or the fish and chips ... my absolute favorite is the octopus cocktail ... just the right amount of spice and horseradish to take it over the top. If your on OB make a point to watch the waves and take in the Southbeach experience. Travelingtoes2

Awesome!

By charky87 |

Tasty tacos, good portions , great environment. Taco Tuesdays and Thursdays are the way to go, $2.95 tacos all day. Best fish tacos I've had in SD.

Fish taco perfection.

By J. Fair |

I can't say I'm a fish taco expert... But these were by far the best I've ever had, and the price was fantastic. Manage your expectations for the restaurant...this is a low price place on a beach... You aren't getting gourmet food or service. But, if you want beer, fish tacos, and a view of the ocean, this place can't be beat. It does what it does, well. I'd go back in a heart beat.

VERY GOOD SPECIALS & HAPPY HOUR.

By ROSE S |

I can say that it is a good spot for Happy Hour. Went twice and was very happy with my food selections, beer selections, service, and the view.

World Famous Mahi Mahi? NOPE!

By NicholasSG |

WORLD FAMOUS MAHI MAHI! That's what it said nice and bold on the menu, so what does a foodie like me do????? Get the mahi mahi! But first we had to read the fine print on the menu that says, "place orders at the bar". Now we know why no one was coming to our table. So, we hit the bar and ordered that world famous mahi mahi, a couple of carnitas tacos, some shrimp cocktail, the crabbed stuffed avocado (which we were told later was not available), some chicken tenders for our little guy and some beverages. The shrimp cocktail... Lets just say, I would have rather had the shrimp platter from a grocery store over theirs. I picked one up and immediately got that bad fish smell instead of a delicious fish smell. Nothing to brag about... I was able to stomach most of my carnitas tacos - way better options in the area AND back home in Minnesota. As for those world famous mahi mahi tacos... NO! Not. Even. Close! I've definitely had better mahi mahi tacos throughout my travels and in terms of fish tacos in general, these don't even come close to some of my favorites back home in Minnesota. I couldn't even finish my meal! Sadly, the chicken tenders that my little guy got was the best thing at the table besides my beer. Hand cut fries were a good touch as well. Maybe the crab stuffed avocado is worth eating???? If you're traveling to the San Diego area and will be in the Ocean Beach neighborhood, take my advise... Keep walking past this place and go straight to Hodads for an awesome burger and shake! #knowbeforeyougo

The Perk is the view!

By Jon / Judi S |

We walked Ocean Beach for a relaxing morning then googled "restaurants near me" and South Beach Bar and Grille came up. We love fish tacos so we headed for this place. What we didn't expect was the second floor pub area that had outdoor seating facing the beach/pier/ocean. It was a terrific way to spend lunch, continuing our relaxing day. Oh and the Mahi Mahi Fish tacos were fabulous. We stayed about two hours. There is a public parking lot next to the restaurant. It is large but is utilized by beach and pier public so circling may be a necessity. We got a spot right away at 11:30 am but Cars were coming and going constantly.

Roof top tacos

By frozenrop5 |

Went with a group of guys and ate on the roof top. Great tacos, good cocktails. Not a fancy place and can go in board shorts and a tank. Atmosphere was very chill with both young and old.

Horrible!

By KaynGeorge |

My husband and I visited this restaurant. A young man came to our table to take your order as we started to go place our order. It was Taco Thursday, so my friend and I ordered tacos, while my husband ordered Coconut Shrimp. We watched the entire first half of the Duke/Syracuse basketball game, then the 3 tacos were delivered at halftime. The waiter walked away, so we asked the next waiter if my husband's order was coming. His reply was a very nonchalant "We are busy upstairs." My friend and I ate our horribly cold tacos. My husband never received his meal. Twenty minutes after we finished our tacos, he went to the bar to get our bill and pay. The young man who took our order completely ignored my husband, even though my husband was obviously trying to get his attention. The young man even walked right past my husband to go to another table and completely ignored my husband. My husband came back to the table, I wrote a note saying that my husband never received his meal so the money we left on the table was for 3 tacos and a coke. The food was not good and the service was the worst ever. An absolutely horrible experience.

GET THE WINGS

By pfmiller1037 |

Stopped by this place while out walking. The place is huge, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Wings were excellent.

Skip this place

By Jill R |

So this USE to be my go to place for friends and family visiting from out of town. My last few visits in a personal level were less than satisfactory. My friends I took there a few months agree was embarrassing. This past visit was disastrous. Friends I haven't seen in years wanted fish tacos and heard of this restaurant so I said well let's try some place else. They were insisting on going here. They both had oysters and BOTH were horribly sick with food poisoning Thur and Friday leaving only yesterday to enjoy a bit of Ocean Beach. What a way to ruin a vacation. I will never step foot in this place again. It's true to its name on it should say going south!

7 hours on a plane for the fish tacos

By Larry F |

OK, so I was there on business, but I could not let a week in San Diego pass without going back for the fish tacos. I choose the grilled wahoo every time and have not been disappointed in over 10 years. The downstairs bar has changed since my last visit, but the quality of the food and drink are still outstanding. The ceviche appetizer was perfect, and my wife also loved the nachos.

best beach spot

By ColtRich |

Spent a week in OB, ate at South Beach almost every day. The mahi tacos are insanely good, with good beers on tap. Loved the whole area this place was in too, awesome beach town. Definitely heading back to OB soon and going straight back here for a mahi taco.

Great tacos and beer, what more do you want ?

By thereefs |

Went down on a Thursday night to find a moderately busy bar with an event on upstairs. Thursday night all tacos 2.95 and $4 beers, what’s not to like ? We had mahi-mahi, whale, and yellowtail, all very good with big chunks of fish. The local brews were sensational, can’t remember the exact brand but one was a very cloudy (impenetrable ?) IPA and the other a stout with coffee and vanilla. Both delicious. I think the website is a bit more stylish than the actual place, hey it’s just a bar, but at that a great one.

California Hip and Great Tacos

By Chip S |

We were directed to South Beach Bar & Grill by locals, when we asked where we could get really delicious fish tacos. We were told: “These are the best around, and it is a real California cultural experience.” Right on both counts. We had our tacos on the balcony overlooking the beach (order at the bar, and food arrived quickly). You could also sit at tables inside on either floor, but to sit with friends overlooking a moonlit beach is very nice. This area is full of quirky stores, restaurants, bars and great people watching—it is California hip. This is NOT a fine-dining kind of a place (order at the bar), it’s an immersion into an authentic local community. You can’t possibly underdress. We particularly liked the lobster taco and the wahini taco. We fed a party of five with tacos and a drink for less than $50.

Great Tacos

By pokey89 |

Stopped here on the recommendation of a coworker. Great tacos and good view of the waves. No complaints on food quality or quantity. However our server must have been doing more than one job since we were never asked if we needed more drinks-- we only had one and we had to track him down to get our bill.

Fills up QUICK!

By Paul H |

Get in line a bit early and you are rewarded with a place to sit and great tacos. Good food and drinks here and our service was friendly. Great value for SD as well.

Fun Place!

By LinLinWestchester |

South Beach Bar & Grill is a fun place! The food was great! The service was good! I would definitely go back.

Good food and drinks

By Diane A |

Five of us had various meals. Three had fish tacos and thought they were great . We also had calamari strips. Was disappointed that they were steak strips, but they were still good. One had veggie burger and said it was very good. Clam chowder was big portion and very good. Very different margaritas for a nice change.. 6 meals, plus drinks and tips was $108. We would return.

Great Fish Tacos!

By poliver319 |

Great food and drinks, great spot to watch the sunset over the ocean. Very popular and can be crowded and getting a table can be a challenge, but worth the wait.

This used to be a GREAT place to hang out... now... not so much

By Joel B |

The expanded a while back. All of their drink and food prices have gone up. They used to have GREAT fish tacos, but now they're just average.

Tacos with a view

By EndyBOSTON |

It's all about the tacos! They're full of flavor and good-sized, three were enough to fill me up. The ambience is very easy and relaxed, just steps from the beach. Find a seat on the balcony for a great view.

Very Slow

By Melany D |

Came into fairly empty place and it was rough getting any food. Be prepared to wait and wait and wait. We gave up. Too bad.

wish I found it sooner.

By Mark P |

so good went back 2 days later, nachos supreme with carne asade first visit, and tacos at happy hour, next visit nacho supreme with chicken and baja fish taco basket .Only disappointment is we didnt find it sooner, great service, and great atmosphere and views. And the prices are fair for what you get., so much better than "highschool nachos" at other places.

It's worth a stop!

By MGPennington |

Food was great and the view was even greater! I don't know how to describe it but their cocktail sauce and their tacos had a very earthy/ pepper taste that was phenomenal! Cool part of San Diego area to check out!

Fantastic view and fish tacos!

By ScottieCarrie |

Had a really great lunch with an even better view! Very flavorful fish tacos and our friend had a cod sandwich that he still talks about.

Ocean Beach Institution

By SDSpartan |

Have been here many times over the years. In fact to come to OB and not go to South Beach almost seems sacrilegious! The location that looks out to the OB Pier and ocean is great - right at the end of Newport Avenue. Several years back they added on the upper floor that has indoor and outdoor seating. That is where I recommend you try to get a seat. Much better views! Seating is 1st come first served. Look for their beer and drink specials - usually a good deal. Servers were friendly and good. Food - while this is not my 1st choice for the best fish tacos in town - it is pretty good. Plus you have a great choice of type of seafood/fish and how it is prepared (grilled, fried) and choice of tortilla. Saturday for lunch - place was hoping but found 2 seats at the bar upstairs with views of the waves hitting the pier. Fun. For an app had the fried calamari - this is good, but super filling - the pieces of calamari are huge and tasty and not those little thing things you get at other places. For main - decided on the grilled swordfish sandwich - came with fries and slaw. Thought slaw was a bit vinegary. Fries were delicious. Fish - awesome! Moist, cooked perfectly. Priced right.

Used to Be Good...

By Mike O |

This place used to be a favorite of our for over a decade. Unfortunately, someone made a decision to turn it into a kiddie/family restaurant…big mistake from our point of view. Our first clue should have been the strollers lined up on the ramp leading into the door. Second clue should have been all of the strollers IN the place making sober navigation a challenge. Our four adult party selected a table, and then discovered that the “family” next to us thought that it was cool that their kid stood on the table and yelled. We moved. Noticed tall metal clamps with numbers standing in the middle of some tables. called a waitperson over and asked what that was about. She said that you were now supposed to order at the bar…but that she’d take our orders for drinks and food. Finally got our order and half way through eating, the table standing kid started yelling again. The “parent” was apparently brain dead, so I yelled over to shut the kid up. Didn’t do any good. Asked someone to get the manager. Turned out she was the person who took our order. Said we weren’t happy with the kid yelling…she said that we should have originally sat up stairs…or should move up there. Told her that was BS and that she should shut the kid up or move the freaking family. She said she was sorry I felt that way, and walked away…and never did say anything to the family. While we were talking I told her that we and many of our fiends had spent considerable money at SBBG, but that was going to immediately stop. I asked her how much she thought that those kiddies were going to bring in? Told her Las Vegas tried that family oriented BS several years ago, and it didn’t work. Parents aren't big spenders when it comes to little Johnny’s/Mary’s tuition, etc. Adults, on the other hand, generally spend freely in adult venues that feature alcohol. Spoke to one of the wait staff and they are all against this new kiddie format. The bartenders are having to carry out drinks to people, there aren’t enough wait staff to properly serve customers. I can only assume that their tips and income are going to suffer. As for us, we have told all of our friends that at the SBBG now sucks, and to avoid it at all costs. We will no longer patronize the place or bring friends there, as long as they maintain this kiddie/family orientation. What we have here is a REALLY stupid business decision.

Still the best

By pete s |

We've been to this place several times over the years and it never disappoints. The fish tacos are perfectly constructed and the seafood is always fresh tasting. If you get a seat facing the ocean, it's heaven.

Taco Tuesday

By LivingLovingItaly |

So TT is easy in SD and we have tons of options. Wanted to be at beach at sunset so this was the right choice. The $6 patron Rita's all day on Tuesday and $2.95 tacos make it even better. Wahoo, mahi, swordfish or shrimp so I tried wahoo and shrimp. Both were great and large -not the cheesy street Taco size stuff. The hub had tacos and perk and eat shrimp. Free parking and great vibes. Watch surfers and just hang out and love SoCal

Best Beer Battered Shrimp Ever!

By magic1128 |

We decided to try this restaurant after a recommendation from our hotel. First issue was the parking situation...we went on a Friday night and finding street parking in Ocean Beach is a nightmare. We noticed the hotel across the street offered 4 hours of parking for $10. Well worth the price. We got a table and ordered the beer battered fried jumbo shrimp and also some clam chowder. Both the shrimp and the chowder was exceptional. The shrimp were huge and very fresh. The batter was very light and I don't remember ever having better fried shrimp. The chowder was fresh and very tasty. I would have ordered more had I known how good it was. The price for the food was very reasonable . The restaurant is very popular for Mexican dishes but I don't really care for Mexican food...the seafood was absolutely worth the visit. Try to avoid the weekend unless you are willing to search for parking, but don't let that prevent you from going...

Best seafood tacos

By NeedsAVacation26 |

As a California native and LA resident for over a decade, I was hesitant to try South Beach's tacos and resistant to the idea that I'd like them, but I am obsessed and now need to visit at least once every time I'm in San Diego. All of the seafood tacos are great-- calamari, fish, and oyster are my favorites. I also love the zucchini taco. Adding hot sauce is a must if you're into spice. You can also get the fried calamari or fried zucchini as an appetizer. If you go for happy hour, you can get some great food and drink discounts. Coming around sunset and sitting upstairs and outside is always a great view. Don't miss out!

Tacos!

By sheiksan |

Stopped here for dinner with co-workers after a late arrival in San Diego. Was very impressed with the quality of the food and size of the tacos. I ordered the lobster taco and it was awesome. Great selection of reasonably-priced draft beers also. We were here at night so could not enjoy the views but I bet those are great in the day hours. Highly recommended!

Not the best

By Liz R |

We dropped in on our first day in San Diego looking for a drink and some appetizers at the beach. We ordered Calamari and Onion Rings. Both came and were dripping grease. Almost unedible. The service was fine, people were nice, view was great. They just need to teach whoever is on the fryer how to fry correctly. We would have ordered more if it was better.

Fish Tacos and Birria

By CocoChanel05 |

Ordered advertised 3 fish taco basket and Birria taco plate. Food was ok. Did not like the green sauce and red sauce on the fish tacos. Too much finely shredded cabbage piled on top to hide the tiny piece of fish. The Birria tacos were greasy and the corn tortillas soggy. Expensive drinks.

Drinks, great food and THE VIEW!

By rossdmd |

Go upstairs and have as great time. We enjoyed drinks. The burger was wonderful as was the swordfish sandwich. Great view of the beach and people outside.

Nice place to relax and eat

By Jason S |

We came here after a long day looking to relax. We found a table outside as the sign said that you seat yourself. After a long time we asked the people at the table next to us if we need to flag down someone or if they would be around. After about 20 minutes we did get someone to wait on us. After that we had good service. To be fair this location was busy and only got busier as we were their. The food was really good. Between the burgers, fries and clam strips it all was good. I also enjoyed my beer as it had just the right level of hopiness to be a really good beer (I do not remember the name though). Overall after the slow start with service things were great. Good food and good drinks.

Tacos are the best

By Explore61950 |

You must try their famous tacos. We had the lobster, mahi mahi, and wahoo tacos. All were superb we also has a tuna appetizer that really set the tone for an excellent lunch. Get there early because you want to sit outside on the upper deck overlooking the beach and pier

Meal with a view - get the oyster shooter

By Flynners55 |

Loads of seats available even on a bank holiday Sunday, loads on the menu to choose from friendly staff, great views, just lacked in atmosphere needed some music but everything else was great and very affordable

Great location and food

By kkstump |

We met friends here for happy hour and the food was delicious. Don't forget to order a margarita 😁😉. Yum

Best clam chowder !!

By lifeis2goodtimes |

This is the place for casual dining with view. Order food at the bar and staff brings it to your table. The tacos were amazing and the clam chowder was delicious. I recommend the fish and chips too. Food is fresh and staff friendly. It was a place I could come back to more than once in a short trip if I come back in the near future. It's a sports bar atmosphere and food was exellent.

Too bad the service sucks

By GordonI1977 |

Good food, great view, and good prices but the service is horrible!! Went back to back nights hoping the service would get better but it was even worse. Sad because no food is good enough or prices low enough to waste an evening waiting for everything you order.

great ambiance great tacos

By joe |

Get the two taco plate - one fish one chicken, won't be disappointed!! Located right by the water in OB, this place is a lot of fun.

Good food great prices

By Kwaller29 |

This is a great place for cheap eats, pretty good taste great view. The sun was setting so it was beautiful to see. Shishito peppers—holy huge platter. They were cooked well but the dipping sauce wasn’t pretty bland. Wahoo fish taco—was pretty good simple and fresh. Fish was a bit dry Baja fish taco—was pretty much the same as the just deep fried and so more juicy. Both tacos were good. Fried shrimp por boy—now this was the best thing. Moist tasty shrimp with not much breading and the bread nice and crispy outside soft inside. Perfect amount of seasoning. It was even awesome the next day! Drinks—Bloody Mary was spicy and just ok horchata White Russian was just strong but lacked the taste of either drink. I would return for the por boy at 3.95$ it was a fantastic deal!

ATTENTION Fish Taco Lovers!

By Cheri G |

OK...confession time: I am a fish taco fanatic. South Beach is in our neighborhood so we decided to check out Taco Tuesday. The Baja Fish Tacos were absolutely amazing. The portions of fish were quite generous with just the right amount of sauce and beautiful purple cabbage. I was also knocked out by our order of fresh guacamole...and all at Taco Tuesday prices! They made regular customers out of us locals! P.S. Did I mention the amazing ocean view from the outdoor balcony seating? If you're look for good tacos & superb views @ great prices try South Beach in OB.

Good Fish Tacos with a Great View

By Mark W |

This place is an institution in OB (Ocean Beach). The fish tacos are good (try the Mahi Mahi or the Shark). But what stands out is the view. Definitely make your way upstairs and sit on the balcony. Most likely it will be shaded so have a hoodie or something to wear for the non hot days.

Never disappoints, cold beer and no frills just great fresh seafood tacos and fried baby octopus

By A3093HHstephaniew |

Lobster, shrimp and/or ahi tacos and fried baby octopus. These guys do it right. Enough beer choices on tap, cool OB vibe with a great view. Been all over the world and the baby octopus here is still our favorite.

Good food, Great View!

By DesertDad1 |

While visiting San Diego, we eat here multiple times, my wife loved the calamari appetizers, the food is overall was good, the cocktails were standard, nothing to get excited about. The best part was the Happy Hour and the view! Happy hour is 3p-6p with half off appetizers, drink special. The only issue is they have multiple servers that help you, so sometimes you can get lost in the shuffle, sometimes you can be overwhelmed with service or be deserted.

Just Ok

By KatB92020 |

Great price for a cold fish taco. Not worth a special trip in my opinion. Place needs a good cleaning.

Not like the pictures

By Stephen T |

We ordered the clam strips and baby squid . No clams were harmed in the making , just burned batter. The baby squid were dry and tough , more like sun dried than fried.

Go for the cold beers and the views

By Lifeisonetrip |

This area is and always has been very "interesting." Lively and full of a mix of regulars, surfers and families on vacation. Lots of very unique shops and restaurants. South Beach has wonderful views and the happy hour has some good beer choices. Tacos pretty reasonable and tasty. Not gourmet or very fancy, just a typical beach hangout with an equally beachy vibe. Our server was super friendly too.

Beach life !

By Don_Pedro_CH |

Great place for Mexican Food (or just snacks) combined with some great cocktails incl. home-made margaritas. indoor and outdoor seating available. Moderate prices, great view, 'easy going'.

Not the best

By C T |

Fine if you are at the beach and want overpriced greasy food, but in no way does it deserve the rating it gets. Better to go a little further inland

Good food in a cool beach joint

By John C |

My wife and I had lunch here. I was excited to see octopus on the menu and ordered the cocktail. It was very good. I also had the langostino lobster taco and it was great. Service was a bit odd. You order at the bar and the bar tender takes care of service. But still service was good. We'll be back.

Excellent Fish Tacos!!!

By Eatdrinkandgo |

This was a great spot for delicious and easy-on-the-wallet fish tacos!! I got the Baja fried ones because they were recommended by a regular, but I would have loved to have tried all of the other varieties offered!! Great menu and great location right by the beach. It was even dog friendly! Bonus!

Mahi Mahi tacos are out of this world! Awesome happy hour, too.

By SolowTraveler |

The mahi mahi tacos are as advertised, maybe better! Best fish tacos I've ever had, and I love fish tacos. Dang, they are so, so good. And, when I visited on a Thursday afternoon, it was like winning the lottery. Tacos were on sale, appetizers were on sale, beer was on sale. I got the mahi mahi taco, a half pound of peel n' eat shrimp, and a damn tasty draft. No room for dessert.

The Best Fish Tacos in the US

By rmisra41 |

Over the last 10 years I haven't found a fish taco place in all of San Diego that's so consistently awesome. Actually I eat fish tacos every chance I get and these are the best Almost time I come I come straight from the airport before I check into the hotel. I know it's in OB, but don't let that deter you. The staff is as nice as nice can be, and the tacos are delicious. They say their mahi mahi us their signature one, and that fire roasted or smokey salsa on their brings out great flavor, but it's their shrimp one that's my favorite. Don't waste the freshness if their fish on getting it fried. Sit upstairs on the patio and stare out at the ocean while enjoying their tacos. They also have a very respectable and diverse craft beer list. Eat here.

Good food

By Laura L |

The food is good. You line up to order your food and it is brought to you table. Great location with two levels to choose from. The upper level has a great view and there is free parking in the lot right beside the restaurant.

You can’t have good food AND good service here

By Gerronimo |

The food and view here are pretty good…the service is about the worst I have ever experienced. Wife’s lunch came 15 MINUTES before mine…saw our server twice and I had to find him both times…no water refills…got the menu by searching for one…seriously, no hyperbole, the worst service..I could have walked out on my tab and they would never know….doubt if we will return…too bad

Don't Miss the Shrimp Tacos

By Linda K |

Stopped in with Mom and Husband. Couple of drinks and Tacos. He ordered Mahi and LOVED it. Mom's Carne Asada was too tough and chewy. SO...we ate it and ordered the shrimp tacos. SOOOOOO great. Flavorful, tasty, delicious and whatever great adjective you want to apply. Wine was expensive, Service is order at the bar. View is very nice. People are friendly. Seats at high tables have backs. Would definitely go again..

Wonderful Tacos and Mojitos!

By Chelsi P |

The views from the upper deck are beautiful and are matched by yummy food and mojitos! It is also located in a fun area and would be a great addition to a bar hop.

Still horrific service

By Ronald H |

Came back for the 1st time in a long time and the service is still increasingly bad. They moved things around so you order at the bar and someone delivers. Even with the shift of service strategy it's still really bad. The food really isn't that great either. Better views at Wonderland. They should sell this place, shut down and reopen to someone who knows what they are doing and rehire all new staff. Do not waste your time coming here.

Nice View Period, Nothing Special

By baja-alan |

Standard bar food that fils to impress. The service is poor and staff was unfriendly. No sense for any further negative commentary. Disappointed. Will not return.

Good tacos

By Rbb599 |

Had fish tacos and they were good. Sat upstairs and had a nice view of Ocean Beach. This is a place in which you order at the bar and they bring the food to you.

Treat Yourself on Taco Tuesday/Thursday

By Suzanne M |

Have visited many times and always enjoyed the variety of fresh tacos, an assortment to pick from both grilled or fried. 1/2 price on most tacos on above days. Seating in or outside with nice ocean view. Self service ordering upstairs but food arrives quickly. Fun atmosphere at the beach.

Fab ocean view, better than average tacos

By Sherrie W |

Basically, a bar with a view of OB. Second floor overlooks parking lot, but we were here for the wave watching. Tacos, fish and beef are above average, fresh made, same with the salsa. This is hard to rate effectively since it was 1400hrs, so I cannot add any more, as to setting sunsets, or bar ambience at that time.

Average Restaurant with poor service.

By gameluver |

Arrived on a Tuesday night for taco Tuesday. The restaurant was not very crowded. We were told that it is open seating and to sit where we wanted. We sat at a table on the 2nd flloor as all of the outside beach view seating was taken. There were people who arrived after us who were served first. The food came before the drinks were orders. The tacos were good, not great. The soup was average. We will not return.

Good food... even better view.

By SunshineBerg |

I have been coming here for over twenty years. Had not been down in a couple of years. We had visitors from Australia and only had two and half hours before they needed to be at the airport. Decided to show them around Ocean Beach and eat at South Beach before heading to the airport. We were able to secure bar stools overlooking the beach on the top deck. Seats were great but bar area for food and drink is too small to be comfortable. I ordered apps for us all and a variety of fish tacos for us to share. They loved them. We had the wahoo, mahi mahi and shrimp on corn and flour. All were yummy. Also tried the wings, they were o.k. The fried baby octopus is just that, little baby octopus so that was a surprise but shouldn't have been. They were a bit rubbery. Took home a fish taco for my son and he said "can we go here instead of Rubios now, these are the bomb." A big portion for the weds. daily speical price of 2.95. Everything is self service and you have to wait a bit but the food and atmosphere make up for it. Wish OB could deal with the homeless and drug problems better. It is shame to have to view so much from such a beautiful spot.

Taco tuesday

By Betty Oldman |

I had the best fish tacos ever with the nicest sundow ever. I loved the shrimp tacos especially! Additionaly they had tasty beer, margaritas and moscow mule. I need to come back here.

Great find and awesome view

By hogsnout |

We were looking for a particular restaurant in this area but parking was tough and had a long line to get in. Decided to explore and found this little gem. Went upstairs and what a view! Right on the water and open air seating was great. We ordered a variety of items and drinks and everything was great. Service was fast and accurate. Glad we found this little piece of heaven. Prices are reasonable as well. We would definitely eat there again!!

Delicious Fish Tacos

By Eric L |

Taco Tuesday was great. Great service. Good food. Reasonable prices. Big portions. Lots of beer on tap.

Best Fish Tacos

By Maureen P |

This place has the best fish Tacos I've ever had. It's right down at the beach so you can sit outside and enjoy the view. The seating outside was a bit crowded but the food was worth it.

Tacos with a view!

By Pioneer550863 |

I keep wanting to try new tacos in San Diego (since there’s so many) but I always end up back here because they’re so good! The lobster and cod are my favorites. I love being able to look out at the beach too!

best fish tacos ever

By 1happykat |

These guys still have the best fish tacos of anywhere I've been. We went back here after being away for 12 years...it's still the best in the area! Highly recommend!

Expected more......

By Island Girl |

This was my first time visiting San Diego, and I assumed being by the ocean, I should get the most amazing seafood. I set my expectations too high I guess, and was told there isn't a lot of culture but tacos of all kinds on every corner and in every restaurant in anyway I would want them. So, we stopped in here, I was told it was one of the best places to get seafood tacos. I was impressed to see Mahi and lobster, so that is what I ordered. The taco's were good, but we are sure we either got someone else's order or someone screwed up because we got our food way too fast. My friends tacos were cold and mine we kind of slopped together. Although the Mahi was good, it wasn't appetizing looking at all. the lobster Taco, they were just OK. My friend who insisted this was the best place, was greatly disappointed and she living here for 17 years said this was by far the worst place she has eaten. Another thing, the service wasn't that great, it took us forever to get our bill, pay it and get out cards back. I wasn't impressed, then again being a foodie, I then realized she was right, no culture in San Diego so they're what the locals concoct and call a taco....... just not my taste in how tacos should be.... I really wanted to leave a good review but too many issues for just tacos.

Lunch with a view

By BankCheese |

We took the drive up from downtown San Diego on recommendation from a friend . The food did not disappoint! The mahi fish tacos were my favorite along with a cold beer on the deck overlooking the beach and pier.

Best Fish Tacos Ever!

By Karie R |

I highly recommend the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos! So flavorful! For a bar environment, spacious, fun place. Great service!

Not to be missed

By Cindy C |

Old style bar/grill. Awesome seafood. Reasonably priced. Get seats facing the ocean. Great place to have a cold drink, a snack and people watch!!

Good Food with Great Views

By JOE |

Good bar located almost on the beach with great views while your eating and drinking. Well worth a visit if your in the area.

don't miss the fish tacos (two nights in a row!)

By wanderfrog |

Just like the title says: Their fish tacos are (almost) to die for and they have a great selection of beers and the wine is decent too. Great layout, great location, lively area. I will definitely go back if/when I am in the area again.

ehhhhh!!

By Ken P |

Good, but very expensive Mexican food is mainly what you'll get. Not impressed. Do not feel I will be back.

Must stop for fish tacos

By Todd J |

Each time I visits San Diego I head directly to South Beach Bar and Grill in Ocesn Beach. It was recommended years ago as a favorite. It continues to be worth the taxi/under drive. taco Tuesday is still $2.95 but fantastic tasty Mahi fish taco. lobster taco and shrimp tacos are also delicious. The area is a hippy / old surfer area with a mix of high end surf shops and cheaper beach stores. The homeless over the last year have picked up but seem to mind their own business. Hodads restaurant is across the street which is a highly rated burger joint. I will be back when in the area. Note this is a laid back tshirt and shorts kind of place.

Best fish tacos in town

By Torstein_Dahlin |

These fish tacos were absolutely amazing! They have a solid selection of fish tacos, as well as a handful of beef tacos. We tried a handful of different ones, but none beat the Mahi Mahi and shrimp tacos. This place is definitely worthwhile to stop by.

Awesome View & Tacos Too!

By Roger B |

This is a great little upstairs/downstairs bar & restaurant at the end of Newport in OB. When you want a great view, head upstairs where there’s an outdoor patio overlooking the beach and pier, with its own bar. The fish tacos were great and the ahi sashimi was fresh and beautifully presented. Plus, anyplace serving Guinness on tap every day is a winner in my book!

Great view!

By FanceyPantsey |

Can't wait the SoCal weather! This place is located on Ocean Beach, which is San Diego's really casual beaches. Very laid back hippie vibe. South beach Bar and Grill is a great place to have a drink and enjoy the beautiful view. People watching is a perfect since this location has two levels. I recommend the top floor for the best ocean view. The food was really good, fresh seafood and tasty options on the menu. My only negative comment is based on their system to order/pay. There are no servers so you have to place your order at the bar. Which means having to get up from your seat throughout your meal. To pay we had to wait for a bartender to close our tab. Mind you, the bartenders were busy making drinks and the bar was full. We had to squeeze in just to call the bar tender to close our tab. Pretty annoying. I definitely recommend this place for good food and great drinks. Just be aware you won't have service.

Still the best Fish Tacos but....

By RonnySarina |

We love to go to South Beach Bar for the Fish Tacos! They are amazing, best Tacos in San Diego. But... they changed the system, so there are no waitresses anymore to take orders: you have to order everything at the bar. At dinner time you have to wait in a line for ages! Unprofessional servers bring food. Why you change such a good system and kind waitresses?

Solo Trip at Sunset

By Taylor R |

I came here after a beach day to have some tacos while I watched the sunset. Amazing view and the Birria was delicious. Overall affordable, service/ seating instructions were a bit messy though, so would suggest flagging someone from the start if you're with a larger group.

How are they passing inspections??

By caitlinmaree |

Came here with my husband due to the reviews... they have a thick thick layer of dust and dirt on their decorations at the bar and the ceilings which should have immediately stopped me from ordering food. You are not waited on, you order your food and then find a place to sit. The female bartender I ordered from wasn’t very friendly, I asked for a coke with line and got lemons which happens so I asked for limes again- the limes were brown. I am not a confrontational person so I just sat down and removed them. I ordered nachos and my husband ordered the grilled shrimp tacos. The nachos were decent however my husband took one bite of his taco and spit it out, horrible taste, didn’t seem like it was cooked properly. I kept trying to look for what rating they are but couldn’t find it posted. Clean your bar!! How anyone can sit there for enjoyment and not get grossed out is beyond me. Will not return.

(Average) Grillz 😬

By Challenger007 |

I’d drink here. 5 Star Views 5 Star friendly Staff 5 Star Beer Selection 5 Stars for the wacky oversized drinkies (and smiley friends sharing them) Must get real on the food however. Not elevated Bar Food, just regular ol’ Bar Food 😂 Solid 3 Star Bar Food I apologize for yammering on about the food, but it’s a “Bar and Grille”. If the sign said SOUTH BEACH Bar, I would easily rate our experience 4-5. Maybe it’s because we’re not in our twenties anymore. Maybe it’s because average Bar food hurts. It hurts my tastebuds and it hurts my soul to consume what would barely fly as “food” at the fair. Luckily for us, the company was great. Old pals hanging out on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone working here is putting out good vibes and really friendly, patient, and efficient. We had the giant HUGE GIANT fried battered zucchini to share (which reminded Mr. and me of a veg stick-less corn dog) with a side of food service creamy white dressing. Phooooeee. Pretty glad we didn’t finish those off. Call in the digestive enzymes. Sampled “lobster” tacos, mahi tacos, and swordfish tacos-all of which were very generously portioned and visually appealing. Unfortunately not any one of them better than average. Tortillas were fresh, temperature was perfect and everything appeared as if it was going to blow our taco socks off but... Sorry people who think these are number one!! Maybe number one VALUE in San Diego, but I wouldn’t run/walk/drive over to eat them again. Overall the meals were all just okay. I was feeling pretty sorry about what I just did to my GI too. If you’re looking for a friendly bar with a great view, perfect!!! Grab a cold beer or giant frozen drink, you won’t be disappointed!! People watch, great idea!! A “Bar” you can bring your neice or dog to, yazzzz!! Otherwise I wouldn’t make a point of coming here for the food. Stick with the beer.

O.M.G. Fish Tacos

By Stacy B |

Is it a compliment to call someplace a "dive bar". In my book, a dive bar that has great service, wonderful food and drinks and plays toe taping tunes probably shouldn't be called a dive, more like a must see institution. I think I found a great beach side California dive bar and let me tell you...I'm going back every time I am in town. First off, go upstairs and sit at the bar. If it's a nice day, sit outside (I didn't because it was a bit chilly) but from here, you'll get a killer sunset and a great place to people watch. Sit inside at the bar and enjoy friendly conversation with happy energetic bar staff, watch the big game on TV and listen to some great music. Chat with the locals (the bar was full of them) which is another great sign that this is the best local place around. When it comes time to eat, you have a lot to choose from, but please eat a fish taco. By far, most of the people around me were locals and most people ordered fish tacos. I guess I should say TACO, because it was ginormous and filling and just about the best Baja taco I've ever had. When the sunset, I was sad. The day was ending and it was time to head back to my hotel, but I've got wonderful memories and a place of my own for the next visit. Thank you!

Best Happy Hour Fish Tacos

By kayakingcouple2016 |

An annual visit here usually entails happy hour $3 drafts, peel & eat shrimp, Mahi Mahi tacos, and raw oysters. You can look out at Ocean Beach Pier and while away a lazy afternoon. Sometimes uber busy, but today was easy and quick to be served. Just fun, and consistently good bar food.

The views!

By Palmtreegirl57 |

This is a great stop after spending time on the beach or the pier. The views from the upstairs patio are fabulous. Service here is mediocre at best. The fish tacos were outstanding. There is a decent selection of beer.

The Good, The Great, and Why You'd Avoid - Bar Food

By SanDiegoFoodCzar |

I have been to this restaurant a few times now, mostly for the view. The service varies greatly so each person may have a completely different experience. The Good - The food. The calamari is as big as fish and chips and quite deliciocious. The tacos are average, and the rest of the food is pretty good. Nothing that will knock your socks off, but nothing bad either. The Great - The view. Great view of the sunset and the pier. this is the perfect location for watching a romantic sunset while enjoying some drinks and some appetizers. Why You'd Avoid - The Service. While we have had good service (never great), we have also had very bad service as well. I can't think of a time where I haven't had to get out of my seat and go find someone for something. If you are one who needs or even wants good service, this is not the place for you.

The Dare

By Linda V |

I dare you to experience South Beach's mahi tacos without moaning with delight. They.Are.THAT.Good! No need to add anything to them, they come smothered in a cabbage blend with an amazing sauce. For a real bargain, try them during happy hour, accompanied by a Jose Cuervo margarita. Wow. This plus a killer location-peek out the windows at beautiful Ocean Beach-directly across the street. BLISS!

great place to catch a meal and a sunset

By Petie9001 |

Ive seen some recent poor reviews on this place and as a SD native, I feel compelled to stick up for this local favorite. the reason this place is able to keep the prices so low is because of the no frills-order at the counter-process (BTW-you can order full service at your table or at the outdoor counter). order your food, get your own water if needed, take your number and get ready for the best calamari or mahi taco you've ever had! Sit on the balcony and stare at the longest pier in Ca and watch the surfers. Great happy hour as well with most appies 1/2 price.

Great tacos!

By Jennies_travels |

Had dinner here last night and it was tasty! I had Ono and chicken tacos, and my son had Carne Asada nachos. All of it was good. Service was friendly. It's much livelier on the roof, inside is nice and calm.

Fantastic fish tacos and excellent service

By iloveCanadaEh |

Casual bar / grill overlooking ocean beach. Good selection of cocktails and food menu. Fish tacos were the best I’ve had. 2.75$ daily beer special is a nice option.

LUNCH WITH A VIEW

By teeth16 |

Best fish tacos! I got the Yellowfin tacos. Free parking. From the outside it looks like it might be a tourist trap, but it is not. The food is delicious. Go upstairs for a great view and people watching. We went twice.

Nice atmosphere. Local Bar

By Frank S |

We went here so I could meet a friend that I work with as a telecommuter. The place was really neat. The drinks were fabulous and you really get what you pay for. We had the fish tacos which is what they are know for. I usually don't like a lot on mine so I sort of went fish, cheese and shell. Probably did not get the food experience, but was mainly there for the drinks and the atmosphere.

You are just a number at this place

By Sebastian Sarria |

Textbook definition of horrible. Ordered a baja basket and a couple mahi mahi tacos, and after waiting 45 mins, was told to "not even bother about asking when the food was coming" because they were so busy. Still nothing, we decided to ask for a refund after 1 HOUR! The manager came out, didn't even apologize, and said the food was thrown out because they couldn't find our table...what?! We were essentially blamed for their laziness and lack of accountability in delivering their food. Great. On top of that, a decent manager would have offered free food to fix this mistake or anything else, but nothing. Listen, you are just a number in this joint, not even a customer. The whole experience was mediocre, and not what OB represents. Shame.

I got through it

By Nathaniel L |

This place is dirty. There was food all over the bar. The kid who waited on my just wanted too go home. It's too dark in here. The people are rude. My swordfish sandwich tasted like cat food. Just skip it.

Great atmosphere & views; fish tacos were excellent!

By IllinoisILtraveler |

After landing in San Diego, searched 'best fish tacos' and South beach Bar & Grill came up. Fairly quick drive out to the beach area, found parking quickly on a Friday at 1pm. Go straight upstairs; great views of the surf and pier, bar staff very attentive and food service was prompt. Had the fish taco combo special of that day - the portions were great, fresh and excellent taste. Really started off the weekend in San Diego well! Worth the ride over to enjoy the place!

Yummy Mahi Fish Tacos - Fresh and Good Portions for the Price

By TucsonDaug |

Came here upon the recommendation of our Air BnB Host. We had two Mahi tacos each and were not disappointed. We have had fish tacos in the Hawaiian islands that could compare with these. The Mahi Mahi fillet was marinated in sweet sauce then grilled. Too many times fish tacos are breaded and fried kind of killing of a healthy fish taco. Tacos are about $4 each and topped with fresh lime & salsa, mayo type dressing and fresh cabbage. We asked for flour tacos the second time but they forgot & sent them out to us on flour tacos. Bet the corn would be even better. Top them with a few drops of California brand red sauce - look around it is on most tables. This place was crowded both times we visited. Wander the place for a table for awhile. One of you can order at the bar once you secure your seats.

Best Fish Tacos, EVER!

By CMGI |

I have been here twice and both times got the grilled fish tacos, the are great. They are perfectly cooked and the sauce on them is amazing. Best fish tacos I have had, which is a big deal since I have spent a lot of my life in California.

Awesome

By brett w |

South beach is a great restaurant with amazing 2nd story views of the ocean. Love coming here for lunch after surfing in the morning. The shrimp and lobster tacos are the best I’ve had hands down. Highly recommend if your in the area and are looking for a good spot for food and drinks with a view. Only down side is you have to order with a bartender no servers.

Sunny Day

By William C |

A little chilly today, by SoCal standards, but a beautiful day to relax, taco and beer out at his local beach bar. Great selection of beer and tacos. Highly recommend.

Mojitos!

By Tori V |

I thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp tacos and we all agreed the mojitos were excellent. We drank mojitos again later in the day at the bar in the Coronado hotel and they did not compare to the mojitos at Jose's! Same thing for the shrimp tacos here vs South Beach Bar & Grille at Ocean Beach. This place is small and a little noisy but prices are reasonable. Try it.

Great beach food with a view

By Anne F |

We happened on this place, late afternoon and scored a great table, outdoors, with a view of the ocean. Phillip was incredibly busy, but took good care of us. The fried calamari and seared ahi were decent portions and delicious. Good beer and tequila deal too. We returned twice for Buck a Shuck oysters on Friday. So good and what a great deal. I only wish this restaurant existed in Scottsdale, AZ.

Incredible Fish Tacos

By WhateverLolaLoves |

The tacos are FANTASTIC!!! Simple but flavorful! Decor is very subdued, which is part of the charm of this restaurant. The inside has a sports bar-like feel but the second you walk onto the patio or balcony, you are hit with beach vibes. Incredible views of the ocean can be seen from outside. This place pretty much is the epitome of what I imagined a San Diego bar to be. A must visit!

Check' n out the surf

By Firespo |

Cold beer and a friendly atmosphere with a chill OB vibe. Great view with a costal breeze is sure to please. Busy during the weekend no doubt. A great spot to chill during the week. Come enjoy a cold one and some fish tacos that speak for themselves. Nothing to say but... Ahhhh.

Long wait for poor food

By Aztec2000 |

It is sad. I've been going to SBBG for 20 years and this last year has been sub par. 45 minute wait for not so fresh wahoo tacos. Man was I disappointed. I remember when it was a third the size. And three times as good. I hope they turn it around.

Farewell Dinner

By Leanne B |

Great company, great food. Plus the drinks were pretty good too (especially in 'happy hour'). Can imagine this place would be humming in summer as right near the beach & pier - the winter view was stunning enough. Was a wonderful way to finish our 5 week holiday in the US with some friends. Would love to bring this one back home. There are a number of small bars in this street and as my daughter mentioned would make an awesome hens or bucks night plus a pub crawl would be pretty cool too.

Patio Seating that lets you soak up the sun and salt air

By joshuautley |

One of the best things about coming to a beach town is that fresh salt air you smell as you approach the beach. With a balcony that overlooks the fishing pier and nice waitresses that stay on point this is definitely a good place for some socializing. Oh... and don't forget to order the fish tacos!

taco Tuesday is great dea;

By 2gothere |

We went on Taco Tuesday. What a great deal that is. Their fish tacos were wonderful. And cheap. It is nothing but a bar in what I saw. It was loud and busy. Service was not good. It seemed for awhile that no one had our table. But finally someone came. We were not in a hurry so this worked out. We actually seemed to have 3 servers that night. But we got our food and that was good. It is on the main drag in Ocean Beach and if you sit in the right spot you can see the ocean. We were stuffed into a dark corner. But we got full and were happy. After 6 PM they do not allow anyone under 21 in the place. So you better eat early if you have children. That was very odd.

Still amazing food at a great price

By David_Sabael |

This is the third time I've been there while visiting our daughters in San Diego and still enjoy it. This is the second time I've had the seared Ahi salad which is delicious and a very generous serving. There is also a great selection of beer on tap - the Blood Orange IPA is great. From the upstairs seating there is a great view of the ocean off Ocean Beach and the sunset is spectacular.

Rooftop bar and good food deals

By Chimpy28 |

Thursday fish tacos for $3! Great food and drink selection, nice rooftop outdoors bar too. Slightly dodgy area by the beach so don’t leave valuables in view in your car but the bar is worth it!

Mediocre Food & Terrible Service

By RamponaO |

We stopped in and the bar was about 50% full. It’s off season so everyone seemed to know each other. Unfortunately we got the bar tender who only talked to his two friends and never checked on anyone else. He also got our order wrong. Two of us got the fish tacos which were good but the tortillas tasted either stale or from a grocery store. The chips & salsa were tasty but the chips were cold and extra thick which wasn’t great. Guacamole & salsa were really good. Lots of homeless buskers on the streets too so women might want to travel in groups.

Ok, but nothing more - busy and lively

By The Real DJ |

The bar was busy with limited seating available - we managed to get a high table on the patio at the rear of the bar despite it being busy with the football on. The food was ok, but nothing to write home about. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit. For that matter, I would not return to this area as there were quite a number of homeless.

Happy Hour Power!

By Macy G |

Fish tacos in San Diego are one of the best places in the world to try them. For the best fish tacos in OB you have two real contenders and both face the beach! South Beach's fish tacos are huge, blackened filets of fish with the traditional mayo based sauce and flour tortilla. Happy hour as the sunset is the best time to come and enjoy the setting fireball and a cold drink. My hubby and I love this place when we are in O.B.!

Nice place close to the beach

By B L |

Typical bar food was good. Ocean view from the top deck. The place is kinda run down and could use some cleaning. The most entertaining part was the gal behind the bar. She was as loopy as they come. She asked us if the live football games come on later in Florida......

Good tacos!

By Melissa C |

Went for a night out. They had really great fish tacos. The place was also clean. The staff was nice but not super attentive and did mess up a bit with the order but it all worked out. Would go again!

Friendly and good

By Kris M |

The food and drinks were very good. Surprisingly affordable. A very good bargain. I tried a tuna and a shrimp taco both were prepared well and less than four bucks. The decor is casual as is the vibe, worth a shot!!

The mahi mahi tacos.

By Graeme Fraser |

Recommended by a friend, it did not disappoint. The mahi mahi tacos are fantastic. As are the chicken, lobster and Ono. It also has a solid selection of beer. Note that there is no table service. You have to find a table then place your orders at the bar. Also, upstairs is a little more lively than upstairs.

Eat like a Local

By sndcchmc |

Good food! Mixed Drinks were light on alcohol amount. Tables desperately needed to be bussed, service was odd. Or should I say the lack of service was odd. No table clearly had a server, had to order from bar and keep finding that same person for more food or drinks. This "new way" of doing things was annoying. This alone will keep me from going back even though it's what one would imagine a local place would be like.

If Only the Food matched the View...

By Roger S |

I have been a fan of South Beach Bar for close to 20 years. Back when it was a fraction the size it is now. There is NO better view or place to lounge and check out the OB Show of characters than South Beach. There was a time when Bon Apetit magazine named South Beach Fish Tacos some of the Best in the Southwest. My last few visits to South Beach have not been the best as the food quality is nowhere near what it used to be. Ocean Beach has become very competitive with no shortage of good food and drink facilities. South Beach has gone the WRONG Direction with food quality. I would love to see the management/Ownership step Up and put some passion/quality back in to their food.

Ok

By Lynnea D |

Good food but service not so great. Black and bleu wahoo not so bleu, had to ask for more bleu. Fish tacos excellent, calamari in strips not rings but good. Fish n chips good. Good fries. Crab stuffed avocado to die for.

Tasty fare with an ocean view.

By vijaren |

My friend & I stopped to grab dinner on our way to the San Diego Airport. We decided an ocean view couldn’t hurt. Being a Sunday, the area was packed & our only real option was to pay $20 for a 2 hour parking spot. Thankfully, the prices for our meals at the restaurant were very reasonable. In spite of how busy they were, their streamlined method of ordering at the counter on your way in, taking a number to your chosen seating & having the waitress bring your beverages & meals worked well. We did have to find our own utensils & napkins & weren’t checked on again for refills or other requests but my fish tacos were large & tasty & my friend’s bacon-avocado burger satisfying as well. Given the downsides, I might be more careful in selecting the time of my return but return I will.

Great fish tacos with awesome view

By Buzz2020 |

Immediately adjacent to ocean beach pier, South Beach bar and grille serves up wonderful fish tacos quickly! grab the seats on the deck viewing the ocean, watch the waves roll in and be entertained by the beach goers who come in every flavor imaginable. truly an excellent lunch venue. then get out there and hit the waves.

Great beach taco joint

Exactly what you want and need on a beach visit. Good service, great balcony seating and some of the best fish and shrimp tacos you'll find anywhere. Tuesday and Thursday discount specials, too.

great fish tacos, with a view!

Tuesday's a great day to visit for their lunch specials: TACOS!! fantastic fish varieties. The second story has a wonderful view of the Ocean Beach pier and beach.

Best fish tacos

Best food I had during my time in San Diego and great fish tacos. Very reasonable drink and food prices. Recommended by a local.

Delicious food and cheap drinks

Love this place! Great cheap drinks and good food. We got a bunch of different tacos, as well as the baby octopus appetizer which was soooo good! Would definitely come back!

What a view of the beach and the sunset.

Great place to go to drink a couple of cold beers and eat some Happy Hour specials. Go to the upper deck for the view and you have to order from the bar, but sit anywhere. We sat at the high chairs outside overlooking the beach and a parking lot. They were having a street festival when we were there, and the whole Ocean Beach main street was crowded. Food was good and cheap as were the many craft beers on tap. The Tacos were very good.

Incredible food and views!

The BEST Baja fish tacos ever!! I don’t know what magic they use to keep the fish crispy with all of the toppings, but every bite is incredible. We always eat here when we visit San Diego.

Wahoo!!

By Laura W |

Awesome fish tacos, but on my opinion the wahoo was FAR superior to the “world Famous” mahi mahi, which was good. If you go on a Monday all apps are happy hour prices, as are the mahi mahi, wahoo and baja fish tacos. 3 tacos and a hh tequila drink, I was fat and happy for $20 including tip for 1. Oh, and there’s a killer sunset view🌞

Overrated

I was told I should go for fish tacos. So I went. I went. Parking lot full. Restaurant not full. Service (order at bar, then pick your own seat, drink & food delivered to you) was quick! Only 1 person ahead of me. Cutlery wrapped in clothe napkin & glass of water retrieved by myself. Peach Bellini was awful; I couldn’t drink it. The grilled shrimp & mahi-mahi tacos I had were excellent & delivered quickly. I added an 18% gratuity to my tab but that was very generous as I never saw anyone except for the one person who delivered my tacos. I’m not sure I’d go back!

Good food and views, bro-y vibe

By Alexa |

Great food and views of the ocean. Very generous portions for good prices. If you get there just before 6 on a weekday, you can catch the tail end of happy hour and get 50 percent off appetizers. We had the chips with salsa/guac and shrimp cocktail to start, and then I had the mahi mahi and swordfish tacos and my husband had the birria tacos (which also came with rice/beans). My fish was seasoned well and very fresh, and my husband said his was great as well. Seating can be challenging here (you find your own spot) and the vibe is very bro-y, but we had a good time regardless. Great for lunch or a chill dinner.

Friendly locals hangout with great views and beach air!

We were in Pacific Beach for the first time and happened across South Beach Bar and Grille. We went upstairs and were greeted by the friendliest hostess ever. She told us about the town, the restaurant and the waves. Our server was also extremely friendly. We decided on fish tacos and some local brew. We sat near the open air windows overlooking the surf. Beautiful! Enjoyed our peaceful beach lunch!

Beer and meal in front of the beach

By AntonioXOT |

I spent an hour there after spending a day in Balboa Park. They have a nice wide variety of tap beers as well as nice meals which are really cheap in the happy hours.

Loved the shark taco

By speedz2 |

Was leery about this place after seeing some reviews, but we liked it. Very casual. Order at bar and they bring out the food. It was hot, looked good and was tasty -- especially the shark taco. I should have had a second one. Price was low, low, low. And we had a good view of the sunset. Not the cleanest place, but spacious. I'd go back there despite any shortcomings.

Great View, Great Food!

We enjoyed a fine lunch here on a perfect March afternoon. The fish tacos were great! We would definitely come here again!

Hard to Beat Their Fish Tacos

By Ronald T |

You can expect Newport Avenue to be too hip for some, but this casual bar at the end of it makes some of the best fish tacos around, and at surprisingly low prices. The views of the ocean, especially from upstairs, are another plus. They also have a large selection of beers.

Lunch visit

By Ingrid Y |

We went as a family at lunch on a Saturday. We had to order food at the bar which was then delivered to our table. The staff was extremely friendly. The food was very good and an excellent value. I would highly recommend the grilled swordfish.

Shrimp Tacos & Big Beers

By ScottD58 |

Reasonably priced individual tacos allow you to choose from several types of tacos on corn or wheat tortillas including Ahi, Wahoo, Shrimp and Shark. We three agreed the shrimp were best. Fast, friendly service, this place is built to handle crowds. Perfect setting to watch the sunset if you can elbow your way into the deck. Nice selection of local brews and 20 oz pours for $1 more.

Perfect fish tacos and view

By Jennifer S |

Love it. My husband's goal was to have fish tacos at least once a day during our week in San Diego. I wanted to eat facing the beach, watching the surf and surfers. Both goals met! South Beach was #2 on a Thrillist of best fish taco places, and it was our first stop in San Diego. The Mahi Mahi taco was so full that it was noticably heavy, and the green cabbage added a fresh crunch without overpowering. The Baja fish taco was crunchy and also delicious. We also shared chips and guac (chips were crunchy and warm) and a beer. Overall it was a perfect lunch in San Diego. Would have gone back if we had time.

Oh my, order the tacos

By Eric L |

I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos and the Baja tacos. Dang these were really good. Sit at the bsr and enjoy the view.
