My favorite gyro!!

YUM!

You can tell my the title that I really love this restaurant. What brings me back again and again? It is the authentic Greek food. The prices are reasonable and the portions bountiful! The baba ganoush is a must try,(great, now I'm craving it). The restaurant is on the small side with a lot of tables, but it doesn't really matter how close I am sitting next to another couple/family because the food makes up for it. If you are in Philly this needs to be on your must try list!!!

I'm from Chicago and we have wonderful Greek restaurants. By contrast, I haven't had even a decent gyros since I moved to Philadelphia. But tonight, eating at South Street Souvlaki, the tide has favorably turned. A really terrific dinner of Greek salad, dolmades, mousaka and baklava. A fun atmosphere (and full bar) on a fun street that's full of action and colorful pedestrians. Reasonable prices, too.

My buddy and I disposed of several alcohol beverages and in a mildy drunken stupor arrived at South Street Souvlaki. This place was great! Packed everything to go and gave correct change to a bunch of drunk guys. I over-tipped on purpose because the price was great to begin with. The gyro was delicious and all of the ordering, paying, receiving of food was done curbside. Great spot.

We were one of the first patrons when this restaurant opened in 1976. We lived in Philadelphia at the time, then moved to Chicago. We returned to live in Philadelphia a few years later and again became regular diners. We relocated to Miami and then came back to Reading, PA, in 2000, but rarely get to Philadelphia. Today, we finally returned to South Street Souvlaki. There have been many changes through the years but the food is still good and Tom, the Greek owner, is still there - alive and well. We hope to return again for some tasty Greek food.

We just had another amazing meal with friends at South Street Souvlaki this evening! In our early twenties, this was our spot! We were struggling college students/drop out college students looking for a delicious hot reasonable meal...and we always found it here! Now it's eighteen years later and the food remains absolutely delicious and fresh!(and reasonable)! I commend the chefs because I can't think of another restaurant that nails it every time!! I also commend the wait staff and bartender....you make a great Appletini! I live about an hour from the city now but I will continue to go out of my way to have a meal here! If you are visiting Philly for one day or live here year round, don't pass this place up. I know it's a great Foodie city but South Street Souvlaki's food stands up and surpasses the best of them, CONSISTENTLY! And lastly, the table of 5 with the two birthdays thanks our waitress wholeheartedly....for many, many years of fine service! And thanks for the "Stella"!!! I love your restaurant :)

One of my all time favorite Philly restaurants and a South Street staple for decades! The food is authentic Greek and delicious! The avgolemono soup, the falafel, the hummus, the Greek shrimp, the Greek meatballs, the fresh whole fish, the gyros are all fantastic. Also love the rice pudding and creme caramel for dessert. The owner is warm and welcoming and the service is outstanding. The bartender mixes a great Tito's gimlet. The portions are plentiful and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Warm and cozy neighborhood spot with many regulars. I love coming here for a meal - always a memorable experience!

Love the greek sampler and hummus

After a visit to Philadelphia's Magic Garden, we walked down South Street to find a place for lunch. We decided on South Street Souvlaki because it had some healthy options. From the outside, it looked like a fast food restaurant, but inside on the right there was a nice dining room with a bar.. For a hot day in August, the cooling fans and darkened atmosphere were perfect. We started with the hummus. Very tasty and excellent bread as well. We both got the Greek salad with chicken, a beautiful looking salad. It was HUGE! The chicken was nicely cooked, and all the salad elements were fresh and flavorful. Wine is available by the glass, carafe, or bottle. Service was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our lunch and would definitely go back to South Street Souvlaki should we find ourselves in the area again.

I insisted to my teens that we try this place for lunch because I had read and heard great stuff about it. We were first hit with the following on the front of the menu: "If you can't control your children, please do not patronize our restaurant. $8 minimum per person, $20 credit card limit. When we are busy please have some consideration for the people waiting in line for your table. and You bring any food or drink, please stay out!" Such a warm welcome! My 15yo wanted to leave. The service was prompt, but a little rude. Our sandwiches were OK to not great. Our bill was just under $20 and I paid with a credit card. If you want anything Middle Eastern, try Alyan's around the corner on 4th Street. We will next time.

A very good place with a bit of a strange layout with the décor of a Greek grandma's family room. The waitress was a take no nonsense matron, which was amusing, but they were out of lamb when I visited, which was a disappointment. My pork Souvlaki was a bit tough and overcooked, but still an authentic joint

Awesome Greek. First time here. For lunch, I had lentil soup, spanepoketia (sp) and rice pudding. My husband had a chicken kabob sandwich. Everything was delicious. Tasted homemade. Service great. Very reasonably priced. Right on South Street. We will return.

We ordered from GrubHub. The salad was fresh enough but the oil was overwhelming. The beef souvlaki had a a low quality of beef, making the sandwich so-so.

A casual greek restaurant in the middle of South Street. It didn't look too busy at first but it appears to do more business from the take out attached, and there is more seating at the back where there were more people that we couldn't see. The waiting staff were brilliant and the food itself was fresh, delicious and tasty! We had the hummous and then lamb chops and chicken souvlaki, all cooked beautifully and huge portions for the price! Would definitely go back next time we're in town.

We had a really yummy lunch here with a couple of glasses of wine. My husband and I shared a platter for $23. It was full of all the tastes of good home style Greek food. We really enjoyed it and were totally full...but had to try the Baklava $4 which was really good!

I was there last saturday (May 14) with my family at the behest of my daughter. We just came back from greece and wanted to see how greek food in america tasted. Family concensus- The food in greece tasted better but the food here was still excellent! The price was reasonable for the amount of food we got. Place was cozy. Service was fast and courteous. I did see all the remarks mentioned by the previous reviewer that was printed in small type at the bottom of the menu. I merely laughed at it and told myself that at least I won't have any unruly kids bothering my dinner or someone who will talk for 30 minutes after the last food was chowed down while I wait and wait. What the previous reviewer did not see was the sign by the door saying NO BATHROOMS. Yes they have bathrooms- for the guest.

Everything here is homemade and excellent. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. Their pork chops and roasted chicken melt in your mouth. Their Baba ghanoush is the best I've ever had, and that includes every other place I have reviewed. It's very different, it has feta cheese, olives and tomatos in it. My new favorite dish here is their grilled shrimp Greek salad. I actually crave it- yes- a salad. Their spinach pie is wonderful. Their vegetarian platter is delicious. The prices are very reasonable and fair.

Just had a spectacular meal here with friends. It was my first time but not my last; I will definitely return. The menu is huge and varied so something for everyone. The grilled octopus over greens was magnificent as were the salads and calamari. Beer on tap was delicious, as was the fried cheese and hummus! Have to go back to this legendary restaurant soon. Tom, the owner, is a gem of a guy and is truly dedicated to both the restaurant and his patrons. Don't miss this one!

Being life-long residents of the Philly area, we've been here a number of times. It's great when you're checking out South Street, to stop in for lunch. The dimly lit, cozy interior is welcoming. We've enjoyed whatever we've ordered, including meats, seafood, salads, sides and drinks. Prices are reasonable

Casual dining, but very tasty. In warmer weather, the front is open. They serve mostly Greek food, including shish kebab, souvlaki.

Great Greek but can be expensive for what you get

You go to Soulvaki for the greek food. The 5 star rating is for the home cooked food.I have been going there for 30 years. We live in town and dine out multiple times a week. We enjoy all the award winning chefs in the city but still love go to Soulvaki for a good, solid home cooked meal twice a month. It is our go to for a relaxed atmosphere and good meal. I have spent time various parts of greece and it is authentic greek cuisine. They do have a small bar if you'd like wine or drink with you meal. A good portion of the staff have been there for 20 years. The prices are so reasonable and the fact that it has been in business since the 70's is a statement. We often invite people to join us and they are always pleasantly surprised due to the lack of pretense and standard decor. The price is so reasonable , it is a hidden greek gem. The experience is the food!

If you are looking for homemade traditional Greek food, this is your place!!!! Tom, the owner, is responsible for the amazing flavors of the food, which make me think sometimes, that even in Greece the restaurants don't cook that well...and i can say this cause i'm 100% Greek!!! His restaurant is decorated in a way that makes you think you are in Greece, and his service is excellent! Clean and fast, always gives you the result you search for.. My personal favourites, are the octopus, dolmades, saganaki (opa), the lamb, the salads and every special he offers. All i can say, is i'm lucky to visit this restaurant often, that reminds me of my country!

The Gyros were great with lots of meet and prices not too bad. It's small so if you are not careful you miss it. As in any place in Philadelphia, parking is difficult. Don't it scammed by the place across the street. Yep I did. He took my parking money and ran. But next time I'm in the area, I will be back, and will hold on to my money a little better.

I love this place. I used to live in the neighborhood where it is located, and would frequently walk to the place and order food for take out from them. After having moved out of Philadelphia, I had the opportunity to return to this restaurant as an outsider. After this visit I am happy to report I still love it. Don't expect anything fancy--that is not what this place is about-- This is a very solid restaurant serving Greek food. I would say the quality and value at this place is appropriate.

Great place to eat with great service. As usual, Tommy does not disappoint. We have been coming for 17 years. Our standby is the grilled octopus (with grilled pita) and the calamari. Spanakopita is awesome too. No meal we have had was anything but great. Be sure to check whether they’ve closed for vacation in January and July.

Flaming cheese? Sign me up!! Their gyros are fantastic, and I love eating here. Great value for the money, and always easy to get into, even w/ a steady flow of people in and out of the place.

We were randomly walking along South St to get cheesesteak and ended up eating at this Mediterranean restaurant. No frills, just authentic Greek food. Everything was great. Service was excellent too. Would highly recommend this place. Help keep places like this open. :)

An institution on South Street. If you like Greek food, you will not be dissapointed. The price point is very reasonable. In addition to good food, our waitress Fran was attentive timely and professional.

Main advice: come hungry! South Street Souvlaki is not fancy but the service and food are very good. It's not too noisy so you can have a conversation with no problems. It does get crowded as it is quite popular.

I dropped by here for lunch during the summer and one positive thing for this restaurant is that the air conditioning was working! After dealing with the heat outside, it was nice having a cool breeze circulating around the restaurant. I had the chicken kabobs which were very good but was disappointed that the avgolemeno soup (lemon chicken soup) was not in season.

My family and I live near Philadelphia and eat here several times a year. This is the place to go for a gyro. And you definitely want to try the appetizer of beets with skordalia dip. The employees are very nice and the food is always great. It's not very big and, while I wouldn't say that they rush us, they also don't allow us to linger at the table. They serve the different courses at a faster pace than most restaurants. They want to have a faster turnaround time. I definitely recommend it for gyros, but not for more elaborate greek food.

We have been coming here for over 40 years! Tom, the owner, is a great guy who makes you feel welcome, as does his staff. Although for the most part, we have been ordering the same things for all these years, we use his offerings as a guideline for other Greek restaurants. Most don't live up to our expectations. The hummus is by far the best we've had and their gyros are hard to beat. The Greek salad is always spot on and the meatballs are also very very good, as are the mussels. They must be doing something right to be at the same location for all these years, so make a point of stopping in - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

SO we wanted to eat at Jim's steak down the street but as the Eagles game had just ended the line was 40+ people long literally out the door and around the corner and not moving all that fast... When we walked down the busy South Street just a block we came across this Greeek and were very happy with our find. While it was a little crowded we were able to get seated right away, food came quickly and were out the door before we probably would have even of gotten to the fron tof the line at Jim's Steak place (which is a must go btw)

Well we ordered the meal deal for 2 people. We each got one salad, one dessert, one entree, and we split the appetizer for 36 bucks. The portions were good sized and the food was delicious. I got the chicken kebab and it was amazing and the meat was so tender and tasty. My wife got a Greek Lasagna and she loved it. The salads were fresh, crisp, and the vinegar and sheep's cheese was great. The olives were good as well. We got for the appetizer the stuff grape leaves and were impressed with how fresh and flavorful they tasted. For dessert I got the Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts and my wife got the Greek custard pastry. Once again we were not disappointed with the dessert. My wife loves coffee and ordered a Greek coffee and she liked that as well. It was strong, but tasted good Anyway the place is not much to look at as far as decor neither is it a place to go for a ROMANTIC DINNER, but great food for the price.

What can I say about this place? The staff is great. The food is great. Try anything on the menu. I don't think there is a bad dish to be found anywhere in this restaurant. The owner, Tom can often be seen working alongside the staff, ensuring that the quality never drops below excellent. This is a fun place to go for great Greek food at an affordable price on the coolest street in Philly!

I've visited Philadelphia several times throughout my years and am always trying to sample the local cuisine. That said, I recently visited this on a tip from my brother-in-law. This is quite possibly one of the best spots I've eaten at. I truly was taken back at how authentic the food was in presentation and flavor. Service was exceptional as well. I will continue to visit South Street Souvlaki every time I visit Philly.

I've been frequenting South Street Souvlaki for twenty years. Good, authentic Greek food. Convenient walk up counter and quaint little restaurant inside. If you are visiting South Street, definitely give this independent spot a try.

I have been coming to this restaurant with my father since I was 16 years old. I have always ordered the exact same thing and recently I went back after maybe 6 years off and ordered my favorite dishes and I promise it was like I was transported back in time. EVERYTHING was AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! The Greek sampler platter is a little bit of everything they offer, it is enough for at least two people but my recent party had three grown women and we were all full. The calamari is my favorite in the ENTIRE world! Lastly this was the first time I was old enough to order a drink and I was very happy with size of my glass of wine and the price for it to be south street which is typically high priced like other parts of center city. This place is great it is quaint, with awesome service, and the food is delicious. I would recommend it for a small family, a intimate date, lunch with the girls.

Have dined here often. Live north of city, but willingly make the hour drive for the most delicious fare in the most quaint atmosphere! Have eaten and enjoyed many menu choices, but love the namesake--the souvlaki (and gyros) best! We're never disappointed and always leave full and satisfied!

1st visit to this restaurant in 30 years and was pleased to find it as good as ever. 4 of us shared single portions of salad, "Greek sampler" and baklava and came out stuffed. The waitress was very friendly and full of laughs

Pretty excellent greek cuisine

Hadn't been there in a few years, wow the food is awesome. Everything fresh made, everything looked amazing!

You have to try their grilled octopus. Delicious. But they don't stay open late.

My daughter lived in this neighborhood in the 70s great Greek food in fun environment. Took granddaughter here in the 90s for first octopus . Reasonable cost. After all these years, still good quality, affordable delicacies. Keep on

My fiance is from the Philadelphia area. We're both major foodies, but he never had the chance to try Greek food. I am VERY picky with my Greek food, and I can honestly say that this was one of the best Greek places I've been too! And that says a lot being from Toronto! Everything was just great. And as always it didn't burn a hole in our wallets. Will most definitely come again!

South Street Souvlaki is on my favorite street in Philadelphia (South Street), right in the middle of tattoo parlors, clothing shops, lingerie stores, concert venues, diamond and silver exchanges, an.v d more, a totally diverse and funky place... but step into the restaurant and you're in another world... a darkened bar, with wooden tables, easy-going servers, and fantastic traditional Greek food, served up in large wholesome portions... the baba ghanoush is flecked with raw garlic, morsels of feta cheese, and occasional bits of tomato, accompanied by pita bread right off the grill... the imam baldi ("fainting imam") is a half of a large eggplant stuffed with roasted tomatoes, onions and spices... The wines are eminently palatable, the prices are reasonable, and the vibe is perfect after a long day of walking or sightseeing. Enjoy!

I came here last year and loved ir, the Bartender-Man is a former Phys Ed teacher who has a lots of entertaining stories to share, he's a doll. The Pastitsio is great as is the hot flaming cheese appetizer served with pita. They even have Greek Beer (Mythos, $5). They are closed for 5 weeks for vacation until the beginning of August. This is a feel-good Greek Tavern, a warm and welcoming place with something for everyone.

I had dinner delivered to my hotel (GrubHub) and I loved everything. The pastitsio (Greek lasagna) was excellent and the portion was huge. It also came with their sautéed veggies like carrots, squash, potatoes and cabbage. Delish! Had a side Greek salad ($6.95) and it was loaded with goodies like feta triangles, cucumbers, olives, and a delightful balsamic dressing. But my favorite was the homemade Greek yogurt. I got it for desert and it was layered with honey and fresh walnuts. I can't wait to order from here again. Next time I'm having the grilled shrimp!

An informal greek restaurant with wonderful authentic regional dishes. Have been here several times and the food is always great.

As a former resident of Philadelphia,I have been visiting South Street Souvlaki for years. I have never been disappointed in the food. The best meal for the price on South Street.

Not only is the food always delicious but they treat you like family...very welcoming and attentive from the moment you walk in. The bartender makes the BEST apple martini! They have the freshest, most delicious hummus and pita bread! In my mid 20's I dined or picked up take out a couple times a month but now in my 40's and living further away I am fortunate if I have the opportunity to dine a few times a year! The prices are very reasonable for the excellent quality of food! I can't say enough great things about this spot!

Read some really good reviews on this place, so we wanted to give it a try because our family really enjoys good Greek food. This is a unique little place, with a take out window right on South Street, and as you walk in, you go right by the kitchen, which has some really good aromas. You pass by the kitchen and get to the dining in the back, which is warm & cozy, and the service was really good. We thought we had found a really great Greek place, it was all coming together. We shared a cold appetizer combo (6-7 different dips/spreads to put on pita) and we enjoyed that very much. So everything was set for a spectacular evening meal, until the entrees came out. Most of us had ordered Gyros platters, mine was a combo of Gyros & Souvlaki (had to try them both), but we also had an order of spanakopita, and vegetarian stuffed tomatoes (supposed to be peppers, but they were out, so they substituted tomatoes). Overall, we all were a little disappointed. The Gyros tasted very processed, and not very flavorful. Souvlaki was better than the Gyros, but still not very flavorful. The spanakopita and the stuffed tomatoes were okay, but nothing worth a return visit. Maybe we were there on an off night, as many other reviewers on here are much more favorable in their reviews. But all I can tell you is that we were disappointed with the food. Not that it's horrible or bad, but nothing memorable & flavorful. I hope that they could improve upon it, because it could be a great place to go.

We stumbled on this place when our favorite deli in the area was closed. We started with the hummus, which was great! We each had a sandwich-chicken kebab and a gyro. Big portions and everything tasted fresh. The staff and owner were very friendly. Next time we will order entrees as the menu and the dishes that went by our table looked great. The sandwiches were really reasonable-$6 each-and well worth it.

We love the gyros, entrees are awesome

How has this happened? 30 years ago I ate in a1 room Greek restaurant. The food was memorable and I returned often. It grew to 2 rooms. The quality of the food never diminished. Since then, I moved away . Now upon returning, the restaurant has grown in size by 4. The food however is still very authentic and deliciously Greek. I enjoy and look forward to my every return.

Ask for Philus...this might sound crazy, but trust me...ASK for Philus!!!!

We were hungry as we walked by this place so despite it being a diner caliber restaurant with a rude note on the door claiming that there were no bathrooms (which turned out to be a lie) we sat down and ordered some food off the dirty vinyl covered menu. We thought it would be hard to mess up simple Greek food. They managed to mess up simple Greek Food. It was bad.

Stopped for a to-go order. Gyro, chicken on a stick, and dolmades. Great food, great service. Friendly staff.

Stopped in for lunch yesterday and got lamb gyros. They were really good. And quick, and inexpensive. I want to go back and try some other food on the menu!

the food is tasty and the atmosphere is fun! the take out side has some seating- that's where i'd sit so you can smell all the tasty smells!

Three of us shared the sampler appetizer, followed by gyros and soulaki sandwiches. The appetizer was so flavorful and enough for medium appetites. Everything was delicious. The chicken was tender and no complaints a out the lamb. Perfect french fries as a side. I definitely recommend this restaurant for its friendly staff and excellent cuisine.

I love this place and have been know to drive across town to get any of a variety of dishes. I may drive there now... gotta go!

Wow! Such amazing food. The gyro is one of the best menu items and has amazing flavor. Every other dish is so tasty!

We have eaten in this place weekly for many years since we have a standing engagement on Wednesday nights nearby. Sometimes there are two of us, sometimes 4 or 5. I love the dolmades and Tom's Greek combo #2 but have never had a bad meal. My wife likes the gyro (broken down) and the Greek salad with chicken. Friends love the avgolemono soup. The baklava is wonderful. We always say we'll go back for "real meals" but the parking is easy on the nights we eat there (at 545 pm) and we somehow never get there on other nights. The beer list is limited. Beware, Tom closes in January and one of the summer months. Check the website for the schedule.

Came by this place from just walking down the street and hearing Greek music from outside. We sat at the bar and just had some meze with beer and ouzo. Food & service was all great. We even have the pleasure of the owner joining us at the bar and giving true Greek hospitality.

First, South Street is a cool spot to walk around in Philly. That was a bonus. The food was really great and there was a $33 - Dinner for Two Stimulus Package that includes appetizer and dessert! Hard to beat!

Hands down the best Gyro on South Street. Never disappointed. Have not been able to find quality for the price anywhere else. I love these guys.

If you are looking for a wonderful Greek meal then I would certainly suggest you come down to this Sixth Street establishment. I've had their Gryo and their braised Lamb shank plates and I was delished by both. Their Tzaziki is a little light on the garlic but both their baba ganoush and tzaziki are quite good.

Last weekend me, my sister, my mom and aunt decided to take a break from shopping and wandering around South Street to get drinks and snacks here. What a pleasant surprise! We were able to sit at a little table next tro the bar right by the window in the front of the restaurant so we could watch all the colorful people walk by. We got a few beers and tried almost all the appetizers that don't contain meat. Everything was excellent, especially the spanokopita, the hummus and this awesome flaming cheese. Bartender was very friendly and kindly took several pictures for us. Bill for 4 people, 2 drinks each and multiple appetizers came to around $70... not too bad!

Came here with my parents on Aug 25. The restaurant is the best ever! We been coming to this establishment since we returned back to the Philadelphia area in 2010. Tom the owner is great! From the service to the amazing Food! We always order the Opa Saginaki flaming cheese, very good! All the entrees are fabulous including the gyros, tzatziki sauce, the Greek sampler is awesome, lots of food. Definitely check out South Street Souvlaki!

I really miss visiting this restrurant, they are family owned and have been around for a long time. It is a great date place. I really love their food and I have not been able to find anything that was similair. They close for one in August so beware.

I have been here several times ONLY because of their amazing Gyros, and for no other reason. To begin with, every single staff member I have interacted with here, with the exception of one gentleman who I believe typically acts as the bartender, has been incredibly rude, one every visit. The staff just has a drill sergeant-type attitude when you dine in, which is very unpleasant. To be more specific, they act annoyed when you walk in the door, they try to ask you to order before you've looked at the menu, they use phrases like "do you want a table??" "What do you want??" (for taking an order) "Do you want your check??" "Do you want anything else??" "Are you finished??" (To try to get you to leave as soon as you've paid your check.) and just other means of being short and curt with their customers. They also just rush the heck out of you when you eat in. Very unpleasant. My wife and I really enjoy their Gyros, so we come here once in a while for a Gyro, but we just sit at the bar where we can be served by the friendly bartender, and avoid the mean waitresses. I can't think of his name, but the gentleman who runs the bar is nothing like the rest of them, and is very friendly and pleasant every time we're in there. I will confirm what another reviewer said about the nasty rules on the menu cover, and have included a picture of such rules. I find this to be disrespectful to the customer, and unwelcoming. I wish they would lose the rule book. I will add that this place is very small, so they probably would not be able to accommodate a large group. However, I will say that with the craziness of South Street on a Saturday night, if you can get past the terrible attitudes of the staff, this is a nice, relaxed, peaceful place to sit and enjoy a nice quite dinner, but again, the attitudes have to go. Overall, this place has potential, but needs some SERIOUS help with service and attitudes.

South Street Souvlaki has been a staple on South Street for 33 years, and the food does not disappoint. The only negative things one could say are that it doesn't have much ambience. You sit down, the overtly friendly waitress takes your order, the food is brought out in just a few minutes, and pretty soon you are headed out the door. There is not a lot of lingering over drinks and dinner. It is not a fancy place: no white linen tablecloths or tuxedos waiters. You go there for the Greek food, which is prepared and served extremely quickly. I cannot think of a weak link in their menu. For the vegetarian, there are a number of good choices from which to pick. The prices are quite inexpensive. They also have a takeout side.

The food is great-my husband and I had the Greek Sampler for $23.00..you have to ask for it ..a huge platter of many Greek food items..we do not get here often, but make sure we get here when we are in Philly...

We eat here a lot because it is in the neighborhood and very well priced. It is good, but not great Greek food, but a fun place to go on South St.

This is a fixture on South Street. I decided to take my step-daughter and husband and we were lucky to get parking, which can be hard in the area, there is a public garage a few blocks away. Consistent through the years- great gryo and with their white sauce. There is takeout, table service and a small bar. We shared the appetizers, each had a gyro, had drink, dessert and greek coffee it did not break the bank. It is a place for local but if you are walking around the area as a tourist it is a good option for fresh reasonably priced food.

I've spent most of my birthdays at this restaurant. Love it. My good buddy from Athens said it was the best Greek he had in the U.S. Great Prices. Try the Combo Platter.

If your visiting Philadelphia, or if you haven't tried "South Street Souvlaki," add this restaurant to your list. The chefs, wait staff are pleasant. The restaurant is very clean. You can sit down and eat inside or you can take-out. Either way, you can see your "gyro" being made to order or your "Greek" salad, both of which are excellent. The "Baba Ghanoush" (eggplant dip) is one of our favorite appetizers served with warm pita. The spinach/cheese pie...well, your going to just have to go there and see what I'm talking about...it's one of our "favorite" places to eat and has been for a long time.

Great value, excellent, tasty Greek dishes, and a gracious host, Tom, the owner. You can't find a better restaurant for the price anywhere in Philadelphia. Very inexpensive and reliable. Try the lamb chops, the turlu, the chicken souvlaki, the kebob sandwich with taziki , and the great , superb, rice pudding

My wife and I would love to eat there ever more. The Greek foods are good. I order the gyro in all the time because it is so good. I recommend you to go there.

I always get the chicken Gyro and it is the best and the dolmades are good too. Usually, I take it to go but the two times I've dined in the hostess was impatient and in a hurry to take our order even though the restaurant was empty. Our tasty food came fast too. I will still keep going but to grab my gyro and go.

I lived in Philly for 8 years and loved going to South Street Souvlaki for authentic Greek and Mediteranian food. When we visit family we always have dinner there. They have an easy take away section as well. The restaurant is charming and fun and the food is some of the best I've had in the states.

South Street Souvlaki is a neighborhood gem! The owner Tom Visillios is fantastic and very welcoming! We just had Sunday supper there and the entire experience could not have been more wonderful. We recently moved into the neighborhood and were so happy our Greek son in law suggested Sunday supper there. The food is delicious and plentiful; we loved the lamb shank and beef stew. The martini was perfectly made. Lots of regulars were there which demonstrates what a gem this is. The atmosphere is cozy, warm, inviting and comfortable. We are making this one of our regular weekly spots! We cannot wait to return!

Whenever I travel to Philly I have dinner at South Street Souvlaki, and it has never disappointed in 25 years. I especially love the imam bayaldi, and the taramasalata. All the dishes are freshly and lovingly prepared, perfectly spiced. This visit, however, I had lunch and was a little disappointed with the Greek salad - the lettuce was iceberg only, and a bit tired. The dressing tasted mass produced. However, the dolmades in the salad were perfection, as were the dips - hummus, taramasalada and melitzanosalata. Disappointing, but not enough to keep me away on my next visit. And did I mention the fantastic desserts??

There's a reason that this restaurant has survived for 30 years in an area where there is a high turn over rate. It's friendly owner Tom, offers good Greek food at a fair price. The decor is simple and reminds one of a Greek village. An eclectic mix of art decorates the walls. On the weekends, the restaurant can be busy so it's best to make a reservation in advanced.

If you like service with a smile don't come here - waitress was impatient, rude and not at all helpful. She just wanted to take the order ASAP and move on to the next table. Food arrived quickly and hit the spot. Tasty, fresh and good portions but I wouldn't go back.

The food and service are good. Decor is nothing special, but our Greek salad and salmon and halibut kabobs were first rate served by friendly, attentive waitresses.

South Street Souvlaki.. For some reason this decades old standard always gets passed over when Greek food gets discussed on the Main Line where I live. I guess we're as guilty as any Philadelphia expat in not having eaten there since moving to suburbia. My wife had a craving for Greek roasted potatoes today, and running through the list of the best we'd ever had, took us for a stroll down the Memory Lane of South Street. This place has not changed one iota since the 70s. Actually you can still get a chicken or pork Souvlaki (at the the takeout window) for the same $3 it cost when I was in high school, and these were called "munchies." The same owner is in charge, and still stops by to schmooze like you are old family. They make all the standards, but where they excel is the traditional flame kissed Souvlaki and horizontally roasted gyros. We shared a simple app of a tender warm pita, sliced to accompany a slab of creamy feta and seedless kalamatas touched with Balsamic. My wife went with the gyros experience.. the foil wrapped sammy overflowing with tasty stuff.. It was around $8 or so. For $12, I went with a Greek Combo of pork Souvlaki and lamb/beef Gyros accompanied by tasty rice and Turlu, a Greek vegetable stew of squash, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. We shared the Greek roasted potatoes which were the reason for the visit. We've never been able to replicate them. Olive oil, tomatoes and lemon juice are somehow involved. They have a unique texture, both firm yet tender, and a richness of flavor that potatoes are just not SUPPOSED to have. There are is a full bar, and the staff are ultra-casual, so you just can't be any more comfortable without eating in your car. I guarantee we won't let another two decades pass before eating here again.

When on South Street and craving a Gyro - you must stop here. They have several seating options and a bar. The service is very quick. The gyro is made with the hot carved meat and great topping. There are plenty of other Greek choices on the menu but we always go for the Gyro.

This is really great Greek food. Great flavor and fresh! Owner on premise working along side everyone. Super staff makes you feel like family. Don’t miss this gem!

You can never go wrong by coming here for Greek food. The place is always busy and it’s fun to watch the staff make the meals at a rapid pace. The food is always outstanding and anything in the menu is well prepared. I particularly like the Gyro sandwiches, and the Souvlaki. A true Philadelphia institution. We came here for the first Time to eat 30 years ago and the place is as good as I remember it.

This is pretty basic, but they have a chef who knows what they are doing. We had the lamb plate (I think?) which was really good, and the baba ganoush too.

Incredibly delicious appetizers; baba ganoush, hummus, grilled octopus. Wonderful soup. Great appetizers. Attentive service. The owner and host has run this establishment for 45 years. It was recommended to us by someone who grew up in a neighboring state and it turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Sit down restaurant, or full buffet take out.

from the gyro, to the baba ganoush, gigantes, and greek dressing! So reasonably priced as well. Fresh, fast and friendly!

It was such a treat to be able to be in Philadelphia and have a meal at this restaurant. Fortunately, we were there right before they closed for 5 weeks! The food is consistently delicious. The same staff has been there for years, so the owners are doing a lot of things right! I love Greek food because of South Street Souvlaki! Note: the menu still states this: "If you can’t control your children please do not patronize our restaurant."

I don't know what they do to their octopus, but it's consistently the most tender and delicious I've ever had, and I've tried it at many fine restaurants! Food and service always great. Can't recommend many menu items because I always have to order the same thing - my favorites that I crave - the octopus appetizer and the lamb souvlaki platter. Outstanding flavors.

A small group of us stopped in to grab some dinner while visiting South Street. Honestly it smelled so good outside we couldn't help but stop and when we did we were ushered inside by a nice gentleman before we "changed our mind". The service was super quick and friendly and the food was some of the best Mediterranean food I've ever eaten. My small group ordered the Gyro platters with rice and vegetables. Everything had so much flavor and was so good. Myself and one other shared the rice pudding for desert and it was seriously the best rice pudding. Definitely leave room to try it if you are a fan. We sat in the dining area, but they do have a to-go window and area as well for those who just want to grab and go. Either way, please don't miss this great place!

If you like Greek food eat here. I go there a couple times a year. Like the friendly service and atmosphere.

Really good souvlaki.
