Food and music are always great here. Sometimes the service can be a bit spotty especially when they are really busy or there is an event going on in the event center. However, servers are usually very good and take good care of you. There are other choices nearby in Bulverde Spring Branch but Spechts is always our go to spot.

Went to check this place out because a favorite local band plays there and we will definitely be back. We started with the jalapeno boats and a side of queso at our server's suggestion. They were very good, but maybe too spicy for some people. They were fresh slices of jalapenos and deep fried so if you can't handle some heat, you better choose something else. For lunch I ordered the brisket grilled cheese with onion rings and my husband ordered the ribeye melt with fries. The grilled cheese was amazing but the onion rings were perfect. I hate when I order onion rings and one bite into a ring I end up with a "naked onion string" and a crescent moon of empty batter. This was absolutely NOT the case with these onion rings. They were cooked perfectly and each bite came off cleanly leaving the remaining ring intact. After eating a half of our respective sandwiches, husband and I traded plates. The ribeye melt was flavorful and the garlic aioli was a great compliment to the meat. I thought the meat was just a bit tough, but that is just a personal preference. The flavor more than made up for my minor disappointment in tenderness. We washed everything down with some Shiner Bock. Our server suggested we order pitchers and she brought out a bucket filled with ice to store our pitchers in which was great since it was getting a little warm in the day. Overall we enjoyed the food, service, and drinks. We also liked the place being dog-friendly and got to meet a few dogs while we were there.

Specht's changed ownership recently and now serves Texas BBQ almost exclusively. This was my first visit after the change and was very pleasantly surprised at how good the BBQ is. Not just good, it was excellent and was the best BBQ I've had in a long time. Had pork ribs and beef brisket. Both were juicy and tender, and oh so flavorful. Had a sample of their sausage, which was also very flavorful but I did not order for the meal. The sauce was good, but I didn't use it due to the meat being so tasty by itself. Sides of potato salad, beans, coleslaw were fresh and tasty. Serves beer, tea, and wine to drink, and offers several dessert items. I had the berry cobbler which was outstanding as well, but the portion was rather small. The restaurant has kept it's same "old time" country charm which is nice. It was a wonderful BBQ meal that will be repeated soon. The food at this place is head and shoulders above the other BBQ joints in the area.

We've been here many times. During recent visits, the service was poor. We were not greeted, brought menus, and waited for several minutes observing employees not paying attention. We had to get someone. During these visits some evenings were busy and others slower. Totally unacceptable service. On one day, we decided to just leave. As we were leaving we were asked if we were ready to order. Really?? We were not acknowledged, had no menus, and not offered anything to drink. Prior to this, another customer who walked up to the bar after we'd been waiting for someone was asked if he'd been helped. This is poor management and service. We won't be back until this changes. We will be speaking to the owner who we know cares about his customers overall experience.

Food was good, beer was cold. Disappointed they incorrectly are posting a Texas TABC Red Sign. Their permit is for a TABC Blue sign (per the TABC website). For a LTC person, this is a big deal. Post the correct signs, if you don't want conceal carry, fine, but post the correct sign, don't blame the TABC.

Friendly service, great relaxing atmosphere, small inside and plenty of room outside, looking good a Texas style experience, stop and enjoy a beer on the back roads, this is your place and we'll be back!!!

First timers! We were entertained. The staff went way above & beyond. Good food, great drinks. Where in Texas... Stage is set... Backstage cattle. Come on folks!!! No better then that!

Enjoyed sitting outdoors, listening to music for Father’s Day! We loved the music that day. It was slightly loud hard to talk. We love the food Kate’s green beans you can’t miss them

Great place for good food, entertainment, and friendly people. The live band on Friday night was very good and worth listening to while enjoying a tasty chicken fried steak, burger, or some fried catfish. Be sure to check the website for the daily specials.

Brisket fries were delicious and a portion large enough to share with the table. There was live music on stage that was good - but had some sound problems. Sandwiches were large and delicious.

Fabulous ribs! Great bar-b-que and food, all the way down to their pickles! It is all TEXAS and all Google.

Stopped on for some music and beer and enjoyed thoroughly. Entertainment was very good, shaded area, dog was welcome and onion rings were very good. Will be back!

4 for a hole in the wall! It has reopened and the menu is great. WE had the BLAT (BLT with Avocado) which came on sourdough and filled with bacon and avocado. It was HUGE! The decor is Texas signs and whatnots with a General Store motif. We had very good service and did not have any of the other problems posted. I hope we weren't an exception. There is a seating area outside with a stage area. A hole in the wall to be sure, but our lunch was great.

Whether its after church or after a long day at work, Specht's Stire gas become our local place to grab a bite to eat. Families gather there to vusit and let the kids run around and play. There's usually Americana music playing in the evenings. Despite occasionally running out of a particular main dish or side dish, we still enjoy the food and atmosphere. Nothing fancy; just a place to grab a bite to eat and unwind in a low key, country atmosphere.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night and the place was hopping! Live music on the patio. Lots of families with kids. Extensive menu of burgers and sandwiches as well as entrees and sides. Full bar with several beers on tap plus mixed drinks and wine. The food was excellent. Definitely will be back.

We had a group of 19 people and the waitress was outstanding!! Loved the rustic ambiance. Brand new bathrooms on outside patio. The food is very very good - chicken fried steak is crazy delicious - enough for two people - best onion rings I've ever had! This little place is a jewel - we will be back!

We went for Sunday lunch and came away disappointed. Place is just as expected, a trip back to the small town country stores I grew up frequenting as a kid in Oklahoma. I had the Chicken Fried Steak and (real) mashed potatoes. Very good but a bit too much batter. My partner had Meat Loaf two times, bot were disappointing! First time, burnt end pices that tasted like cardboard. Second time, quite a time later, really large, gravy covered slice with zero flavor. After being advised that the option was being taken off the menu that day and getting a full credit for the bad meatloaf, we departed with one of us still hungry. Enjoy the atmosphere for what it is but have small expectations regarding the food!

My wife and I, along with another couple, visited after being recommended by a co-worker of mine. While the food was good, the staff left a lot to be desired. We chose a booth inside to eat, which had crumbs and other stuff from the last dinners. Once seated, it was almost 10 minutes before a waitress took our drink order. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be part of the atmosphere, but none of the staff were friendly, but rather abrupt and curt. After finishing our meals, we sat outside listening to a band, which was nice. Overall, I was rather disappointed since the place was talked about highly by my co-worker. Needless to say, we probably won't be making another visit.

This looks like a little hole in the wall. The place inside looks very very very old. If you can picture a old farmhouse from turn of the century. This is it!!!! We had the brisket and ribs.. Both of them melt in your mouth. I think this is the best ribs and brisket I've ever had!!!!!!! It's taken years to find a place that was number one in ribs. These are mouth watering RIBS!!!!!!

You are greeted with an authentic General Store atmosphere when you walk in. Sit inside or out. Our food was fantastic, and the live classic country music a delight!

Previously worth the drive. Miserable traffic makes it no longer the case. Good burgers & atmosphere.

If you've ever craved some true Texas Barbecue, just head north of San Antonio on Blanco Rd to Thurman Love's fabulous Specht Store. His brisket and ribs are the best we've found. Check out the live music thurs-sat on the covered patio.

Spec's restaurant is under new ownership. Food is good. We had chicken fried chicken and hamburger for dinner. Both work very good. Go to specs and trying it out for yourself you will not be disappointed

Attended the "soft re-opening" under new ownership. We all had great meals, good service, and super entertainment ... all at the right price !! Great potential ... we wish them all the best ... we will certainly be returning !!

Had a great birthday celebration dinner last night at Specht's Store. The service was great and very accomodating to our party, food (several different appetizers and a hamburger) was great and music (Flying A's) was great. Love the rustic country setting

Sadly disappointed that food and service continue to deteriorate & today was the last straw. Food that should have been served hot was not, silverware came 5 minutes after food, coleslaw and blue cheese salad dressing tasted spoiled, multiple aspects of our orders were wrong, and between the smell of the septic field blowing across the outdoor dining area and the resident cat pawing for our shrimp, it was just too much. Take your family and your money somewhere else until this former gem can regain its composure.

This place is amazing- Scott let us in even though they were closed to show us around. He went way beyond to give us a history lesson and recommend other places we might enjoy. It was wonderful to see the inside of this gem. It is a find on our way to the Tejas rodeo and saloon. So glad we came back to see this.

Specht's Store has been around since the 1800's and has quite a history. The current Owner/ Chef - Thurman - is the perfect personality for such a unique place. Not fancy, you'll be eating off of butcher paper with plastic cutlery and paper paper towels, this is Texas BBQ as it was meant to be experienced. Meats were smoked well, shout outs for the Brisket, Ribs and Jalapeño Sausage. Perfectly smoked, the brisket just fell apart in your mouth - absolutely succulent!! Thurman uses rubs on the brisket and ribs and enhances very nicely. Unlike Kansas City BBQ which leans to the sweet side of everything, Specht's was flavourful without all the sweet overtones that can become overbearing in many BBQ accompaniments and sauces. Atmosphere was best of all at Specht's and truly enhances the entire Texas BBQ experience. Anyone into BBQ and Texas should try Specht's Store.

Food was good, wait staff was really nice! We ordered queso except it was cold ( sent it back and 15 minutes later it came back warm) the queso was tasty! The wife ordered a sangria and swears there wasn't any alcohol in it! (Tasted like cool aid) I had some beer called texacan and it was good. I had the cheese burger and fries ( the fries were kinda soggy) we blew 50 bucks on 2 drinks a piece and 2 meals and the queso . The music was good and place is fun! Don't expect much in the way of service or food

One of the few authentic hill country restaurants where the food is clean comfort food -- meaning just like Mom used to make it. Take time to linger. Staff is truly friendly and welcoming.

Went for the chicken fried steak and it was half the size of the pics online. Great atmosphere. Good server. Music way too loud where you couldn’t talk to each other. I don’t know what it is about venue these days that feel like they have to have the music really loud and not just a beautiful background. He was good, but just couldn’t talk to each other. We’ll try it out again probably at lunch and we don’t have to have the music. The food we had was decent but expected better.

My husband and I tried this restaurant that is right outside of Bulverde, Texas. This is what true Texas looks like. The history, atmosphere and food couldn’t be better. I have eaten chicken fried steak all over Texas and I have to put this as the best, cooked just right, crunchy crust and tender real steak. (Not the refrozen cubes most places offer. ) The mashed potatoes were just like we like them, fresh and homemade. The staff was great and made us feel welcome from the moment we stepped inside. The service was amazing. Our next trip out this way we will definitely be back!

We ate at Specht's for the first time last night. Loved the history of the place, the country atmosphere, the wonderful breezes and open-air area in back--and the food! My burger with bacon and grilled onions was delicious, and my husband's pulled pork with slaw was also a hit. The wine and beer selections were great, too, and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. We went out back and saw a windmill and cotton gin original to the structure. It felt like being out in the country even though we weren't all that far from our home in the city. We'll look forward to eating here again--for the atmosphere as well as the food.

We went to hear a performer we really wanted to see at this quaint location. We stupidly thought given the time of day we’d eat. 55++ minute wait for the wrong food, surly staff, expensive eats really damaged a decent musician. Either avoid the place or do not order food!

Great place for all the family, good beer and food, Live music on stage at back outside. Very friendly staff. Also very close to Tejas Rodeo bar and restaurant.

We found this place because it was close to a distillery tour we had scheduled. We were there on a Sunday for lunch/brunch. It was a fun family atmosphere. We ate outside in the covered music area. It was fun and there was a local musician who was really good. There's a place for playing Cornhole and lots of room for kids to run around. But the best thing by far was the food! I had a bacon cheeseburger ( all their burgers are brisket burgers) and my husband had the chicken fried steak , mashed potatoes, and green beans, and it was better than my grandma's! We're going back before we leave town. Don't miss this place!!! It's the best food we've had in San Antonio!

Our car club had a full moon gathering here last night - ate outside on the patio! Was a great evening - they had great music and very casual dining! A terrific place - founded in 1890!! The building is fantastic! Food is good - burgers, sandwiches, fries - and the beer is cold! The best part, other than the good food, is the front view as you approach the building! It's terrific!! Terrific old building!! Only negative I'd have to say is that the wait staff was kind of confused at bill paying time. Took quite awhile to get out bills. Otherwise, a grand night out with friends!!

My husband and I stopped in to have lunch and were pleasantly surprised by how fantastic the service was, how tasty the food was, and how enjoyable the ambiance was. We enjoyed looking at the antique collectable as we dined. The service was beyond reproach. Just ask for Hannah.

Love this place for all seasons especially like the outdoor seating during the fall. Like all the live music on Friday or Saturday. Kate has great Fried catfish, green beans, Tilapia, and she makes her own award winning carrot cake! Have a beer and relax with kids place in the big fenced yard. Love Specht's Store.

This was a store back in the late 1800s and now serves country style food. You can eat inside but if weather allows the patio is great. We went for "Steak Thursday" started with chips and problano queso which was wonderful, followed by delicious filets served with salad, potato and a side. We also tried both the peach and blackberry cobblers...left bursting! The atmosphere is old time Texas, super friendly, and casual. We went with friends and enjoyed the live music as well as the food. A bit out of the way but fun and tasty.

Being a Brutherz Band groupie, I was in charge of scouting Specht's to make sure our group of 10 would have a good time. I read all of the positive & negative reviews & this was our experience: Cons 1) small dance floor which could be easily doubled by unbolting the 2 front side tables 2) mediocre food--I don't want to go out to eat to have nachos, burgers or unhealthy breaded, fried foods. This joint screams bar-b-que which would align nicely with the country Texas theme. Management needs to use food as a marketing tool--after all it IS a restaurant. 3) We had a PhD. entomologist at our table who confirmed that a tick was on the hand of another person sitting at our table. In this day of Lyme, something needs to be done to prevent bugs of all types coming in from the surrounding fields--mosquitoes, flies AND ticks. Pros 1) Loved, loved, loved the entertainment--the Brutherz! Stage was elevated with a back drop of cows in the pasture. 2) Loved the open patio beneath tin roof and strings of dangling lights. Once the sun went done, it was romantic dancing beneath the yellow-hued lights. 3) Good service--young women responsive and happy to do separate checks for table of 5 couples. Got drink orders FAST! In summary, it was a fun, Texiana night and everyone had a good time. I am not sure we will return mainly because of small dance floor and mediocre food. It would be a Luckenbachish type place to give out of towners a Texas experience, but for locals, there are better choices both food-wise and dance opportunity-wise.

Specht's now exclusively serves BBQ and is is amongst the best BBQ I've ever had! I have been here 2x now and each time the brisket is probably the best I have ever had. It has a very nice bark, and full flavored. The sauce is homemade and complaints all the meats. The jalapeño sausage is also great. To finish your meal, all you need is a side of beans and jalapeño potatoe salad! The menu that is now served, is not the menu listed on TripAdvisor, but it is defiantly worth the stop. You will not be disappointed!

So much history involved in this restaurant. It was an old, historic telephone switchboard, a jail and more. The food is good, old-fashion country cooking with a mountain of food and inexpensive prices. The hours are limited so call before you go. There is live music on the back deck on the weekends.

Gotta try the chicken fried steak. Service is great and prices reasonable. Very country ...don't need to dress up... You will definitely come back.

Seems the business has closed. The place was an institution, but the Tejas Rodeo is still there, around the corner, with all the fun of a true Texas night out

We live outside a metropolitan area, so there are few choices of restaurants. We decided to try Specht's since it is within easy driving distance of our house. The place itself is charming--it is inside an old country general store, complete with authentic bar. The entrée choices besides salads and sandwiches are limited. My spouse chose the $13.95 chicken fried steak; I got the $13.00 fried catfish. There was a note on the top of the menu that Thursday--the night we visited--was Steak Night, but no mention of what was offered on the menu, and no mention from our waitress. I later saw a notice on the door on the way to the bathroom that Steak Night was a 12 oz ribeye with baked potato and one additional side. After our meal, wish that option had been presented to us. It was our first visit, and we noticed as we left that the other patrons had steak, so I guess they were regulars. We got chips and salsa for an appetizer, salsa was good and spicy, not too much tomato taste. My $13.00 fried catfish plate consisted of ONE piece of catfish that was lukewarm and soggy on the bottom. That was surprising since waitress warned me that my plate was very hot (it was). I had to ask for tartar sauce. The green beans were canned and tasteless, with a bit of bacon thrown in an attempt to make them look like "from scratch". The saving grace was the mashed sweet potatoes, they were quite good with a smoky taste. My spouse's $13.95 chicken fried steak was mostly breading encasing a 6" round cube steak that was more appropriate for a sandwich than an entrée. To their credit, the mashed potatoes were real, not out of a box. After I finished my beer, I asked for water, and was told they had only bottled water. That was fine, but it was room temperature. About halfway through, the flies descended on us and our food, crawling around the rim of our drink glasses. The indoor dining is completely enclosed, so I question how sanitary the kitchen might be. By the time we left, five flies were buzzing around us. Restrooms are outside, adjacent to their outdoor dining/entertainment area, which offers live music on weekends. The ladies room was filthy, with muddy footprints on the floor, paper towels littering the floor, and one sink looked like someone had rinsed off their muddy tennis shoes in it. The outdoor area is large with wooden picnic tables and appears to be pet-friendly--there was a pet waste disposal station at the back of the property. We might try it again for lunch and get burgers or sandwiches; the entrees we selected are available for two thirds of the price with servings twice the size at another restaurant that is much more convenient. Our experience was not worth the extra 12 minute drive or the price and not planning to revisit again anytime soon.

Great Texas roadhouse atmosphere but the Chicken Fried Steak was WAY WAY over breaded ... cold beer and good music
Love the BBQ
Specht's Store is serving BBQ - one word RIBS. The ribs were incredible! The side dishes were really delicious also. Will definitely be back! Ice cold beer too...
