Eh, not great

By Mrs. Faith |

Loved this place when it was under old management and the restaurant was called Mela. Ordered three entrees, one with a special request (no nuts/eggs). The meat dishes were mixed up (lamb when I prefer chicken and vice versa). The meat dishes were spiced gorgeously. Maybe the issue was that I order it to go but I doubt that I will be back to dine in.

Navratan korma

By cam w |

Many dishes at spice could be highlighted but the one I come back for over and over again is navratan korma. The balance of spice and veg with sweet from the fruit and milk works as the main course of a splendid meal.

I ordered a chicken biryani thru door dash when I got the parcel I was surprise to see the biryani which was not fresh and tastes really bad...... I personally recommend people not to visit this place or especially order online.....Pathetic Food.

Fantastic and Authentic

We have enjoyed Indian food throughout the world. Singapore, UAE, Goa, Chicago... This restaurant is the real deal. Open for less than a year, we are so glad we found it. We travel to San Antonio often & will go here everytme from now on. The buffet is awesome, the staff is genuine and it's filled with local Indian clientele. We're happy you're here!!

Terrible food!!!

I hate to tell you this but its the worst Indian food I have tasted in San Antonio by far.The service is worse than a snail, bad food and taste. They even offered a complimentary mango lassi for the late service which was ghastly tasteless!!!

Great tasting Food. Service is Hit Or Miss

By jocampo |

One of the best tasting Indian Buffets in Texas. Weekend is more expensive but buffet had more items. No buffet for dinner only lunch. The service was great on Wednesday. I came back on Saturday and it was aweful. No water refill and no bread was served. I left no tip

An excellent intro to San Antonio

By HikerChickWI |

My husband and I went here to eat one of the first evenings we were in SA during a recent business trip. It was an extremely pleasant evening out. The service was very good. The food was excellent. We started with Veg Samosas and I’d go back just for those. For our mains we shared Saag Paneer and Navratan Korma with a side of garlic naan (we actually ordered two of these but they were huge and we could have easily split one order). I highly recommend this restaurant for its delicious food and great service and atmosphere. I’m sure we will eat here again before we leave SA.

Good service

FOOD CATERING TO 3 DAY CONFERENCE

By Udatha V |

Last week we, the San Antonio Christian Family Fellowship (SACFF)have hosted Texas Annual Family Conference(TAFC) for 3 days i.e. Friday Evening, Saturday full day and Sunday half day. For catering the food for our event, we have contacted the local restaurants, and we finalized SPICE restaurant which offered unbelievable low prices. We thought he may not live up to our expectations as he offered rock bottom prices. See now…... He delivered a very tasteful and authentic Andhra food for our conference. I can’t give full details of the quality of each and every menu item, but I will explain some of the items below. Goat Dum Biriyani- He catered an authentic Andhra biriyani with tender real baby goat pieces well cooked in Dum with Andhra spices. In most occasions, we don’t see the real baby goat meat, but here, he supplied real baby goat meat. He supplied sufficient quantity for a gathering of 450 people. Thalapakatti Biryani- This is a special Biriyani originated from Dindigal district of Tamilnadu, which is cooked with special rice and spices. This is really good. Everybody appreciated the special Biriyani. Good part of this Biriyani is even if you eat more you don’t fell heavy because of its special herbs and preparation. This was a feast and surprise to all our guests. Gongoora Mutton: Baby goat meat pieces cooked with Gongoora, which is a special dish in Guntur district. The taste is authentic and everybody appreciated about this dish. All other curries like Chicken Chettinadu, Chicken 65, and some vegetarian dishes like, Bagara Baigan, Potato Kurma are all well cooked and very tasty. The one dish called mango daal is a highlight of the menu on Sunday. The taste of the daal mixed with mango pieces , cooked with spices is very well received by our guests. Bisibelibath: This is prepared with spicy masala toor daal with rice ghee and vegetables. really very tasty. Ghee sufficiently put in the recipe. This is a famous recipe in Karnataka of India. Curd rice: Rice mixed with creamy yogurt which is rendered rich with cashew and prepared in typical south Indian cuisine. Very tasty and it was very useful for mothers to feed their kids. Sweets: Badsha, Jilebi, are specially made and really authentic Andhra sweets. Jilebi is crispy and well soaked in sugar syrup. The pawn he supplied is so good. Breakfast: Idly, Vada, Tomato bath are true to its taste and the idlies are soft. All the tiffins were served with 3 different chutneys, coconut, tomato and Peanut. Idly is provided with special chilly powder and ghee which everybody liked. Even the ghee provided for idly is of good quality. They supplied sufficient trays for feeding all the crowd. Food supplied as per the scheduled time, and he left one worker for most of the dining time and the owner Mr. Anjanreddy was also attending now and then to monitor during all 3 days of his catering. He completed the catering very responsibly and the food was simply superb. Looks like he is having well trained real Andhra Chef. Anajanreddy didn’t take even advance for catering to almost 1700 meals and 800 Breakfasts (3 items). You did a great job Anjanreddy. I highly recommend this restaurant for the catering. I saw so many conferences in other cities of Texas who fed Andhra food, but this was simply phenomenal. After the conference, we are poured with compliments for feeding them with such a tasty Andhra food with so many items. In all quantity, quality and taste are simply ....KEVVU KEKA

One of the best places to eat in San Antonio.

By CCMimmsy |

This place has one of the best menus I have ever seen. My family and I came to have dinner and we were welcomed with open arms and smiling faces. We ordered about seven items on the menu and enjoyed every single one of them. The staff was friendly and helpful and on point I would highly recommend this place if you like Indian food and you like great hospitality. We had to be sure to stop by again the next day on our way out of town to try this place again. I would highly recommend this place and we will return again.

Excellent food!

By Ro I |

We are new to San Antonio having moving from NJ and desperate to find some really good restaurants like back home... but San Antonio is home now and we have had to make do. Luckily we found this little gem, Spice Fine Indian Cuisine. Doesn't look like much when you walk in, but the food is really, really good. They have many dishes, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, with separate kitchens! The dishes we tried were simply delicious and quite authentic. The spice range is 1-5. we tried 3 thinking it would be medium, but was actually on the mild side. Next time we'll try 4. The owner is very friendly and hands on, and the staff courteous and attentive. The prices are good and the alcoholic drinks are very reasonably priced. We are definitely making this one of our places when we eat out!

This is a great place to have Indian food in the town. The food has an authentic Indian taste and service is really great!

Tasty and Spicy

By flksfhtx |

We had our Foodie group dinner here because of a recommendation and we were not disappointed. We started off with appetizers which was a mistake, because each order was large enough to be a meal. However, I do recommend the Apollo Fish (Spice Special), very good. The main dishes we ordered were all very tasty and large enough to share. Needless to say, we took home plenty of food. Beware, the food is spicy hot so make sure to order mild or #1 if you don't like to sweat.

Excellent Food, Outstanding Service

By bberg3 |

My son and I had dinner here on a Friday night and we were very impressed with both the quality of food and the service. The waitstaff was very helpful, offering some suggestions and asking us questions to help direct us to our very tasty dinner selections. I usually order some sort of chicken dish, but at the suggestion of our waiter, I tried the lamb instead and boy was I glad I did! Very tasty and tender, matched up perfectly with the very spicy sauce in my dish. Naan was excellent, but the plain and garlic. Samosas were delicious. Originally we were going to Chilis which is next door, but on a Friday night it was so crowded, so we decided to go here instead. Funny how things work out when you take a chance and try something new!

Great Food but Lacks Good Atmosphere and Service

By Don Hummer Jr |

I came here with a few co-workers for "one of the best India restaurants in San Antonio". I agree after having dinner that the food was excellent. In terms of comparisons to other local restaurants, I would say the inside of the restaurant was bland at best -- just a big room with tables -- and the service was very lacking (e.g., took a while to get served and never checked on us, my friend's drink took 10 minutes to get and it's not like the place was that crowded). I'm willing to overlook some of those and give it 4 stars given the quality of the food. But if you are looking for a unique Indian restaurant ambiance with excellent service, i wouldn't come here. If you're not picky and don't mind a 1+ hour (ours took 2) dinner but know the food is going to be great, then come here.

Wow!

By Rena D |

Talk about some perfect garlic naan! And the spices in everything were delightful. Just what I want in Indian food.

Excellent Indian Food

By Yusuf M |

If you crave Indian food, this is the restaurant to go. The menu is huge and serves north and south Indian delicacies. The interior of the restaurant is very dark and gloomy but the food is excellent. We ordered Mixed Veg Pakora, Lamb Chops, Chicken Saag, Chole Bhature, Tandoori Roti and Mango Lassi. Mixed Pakoras were very crisp served with mint chutney. Lamb Chops were perfectly done and served on a sizzler. Chicken Saag and Chole Bhature were excellent. The roti and bhature were crisp and fresh. The quantity of food was more than adequate. The price of each item was very reasonable.

Surprisingly Poor

By BaeMse |

Although we have had good experiences here in the past, last night the take-away food was really subpar. Dry naan, tasteless biryani with scant meat & a Gonguri lamb curry that had no finesse or flavor.

Very Tasty Indian Buffet Fare

By docwhiteaustin |

Having eaten several times at their Austin location, we were excited to have a chance to try the one in San Antonio. Had the buffet lunch on a Sunday. Very busy, but we were seated promptly by friendly manager. Excellent variety of delicious dishes on the buffet. Especially enjoyed the spicy fish, eggplant dishes, biryanis and curries, butter chicken, and paneer selections. Everything we tried was as good as if each had been created per special order. Will definitely return soon.

Great Place

By Ryiane |

It was my son’s and I first time eating here and it was a great experience. The staff were nice and friendly. The Gobi Manchuria was great and it was the first time trying it. The Andhra Style Chicken Curry (With Bone in)was tasty as was the Lamb/ Goat Rogan Josh. The rice was good as were the drinks. Overall, it was a great experience, we will definitely be coming back.

Authentic but crowded

By JackTheWorldTraveler |

Authentic and spicy, good food and great service. Everything we ordered was good. A bit too popular, quite crowded with large groups of Indians, I take away one point for the noisy atmosphere. They should probably expand, or open another location. There was a group of 17 coming in as I left, and the phone was ringing off the hook. It was a Sunday night...

Delicious food

I strongly recommend this restaurant to everyone, helpful people delicious food .. Friendly staff, good buffet. Highly recommended.

The Best Indian Cuisine

By KP R |

Indian food is hands down, my favorite food!! This place is hands down, my favorite Indian restaurant. I've been here enough that the majority of huge staff remember me and are super friendly!! The food is delicious. The buffet has so many selections. The Paneer Butter Masala and Masala Dosa is my favorite, but love everything else too. I would bring any foodie here!!

Not As Advertised

By tgates5 |

Talk to me about poor...food, ambiance and service. Lousy buffet including lukewarm food, no really hot curries, and extra limited selection of salads. Weak iced tea rounded out a forgettable lunch.

Quite good!

By Doctor_Possum |

My search for a decent Indian buffet brought me to Spice. Having lived 16 years in the State of Kerala (southern India) I was happy to learn that the owner is from Hyderabad (also in the south) which I had the pleasure to visit many times over the years. True enough, I saw some familiar southern dishes: sambar, rasam, idli and pongol (think spiced cream of wheat). All were quite good. Besides the ubiquitous chicken tikka and mutter paneer were dishes seldom seen on a buffet: Anchra style (bone-in) chicken curry, pani puri and baby corn Manchurian (baby corn dipped in a light batter, deep fried with a sweet-sour sauce (very interesting). There were three different biryani, all tasty. Goat curry was also available and for those, like me, who don't like a gamey flavor, the meat was very mild and tender. And, in a change from saag paneer, was saag with mixed veggies--very nice. There were two disappointments. The first came from the dessert selection--only one available, kheer, but not made with rice but rather semolina. So much did it look like an entree that a sign with an arrow pointing to it was placed above. The second was the chai. True, it was included in the meal price but my heart sank when I saw the sugar bowl on top of the dispenser. The sugar is traditionally brewed with the tea, spices and milk. Unfortunately, while not being unpalatable, the flavor was weak and a tad stringent. But, true to the restaurant's name, it's the spicing that sets it apart. Great care is taken here with each dish being distinct from its neighbors. I was told that the masalas (spice mixtures) were made in-house. Even the fairly common jeera rice (rice with cumin) took on an added dimension. And wonder of wonders, these dishes actually had some heat! Not as in India, but enough to set it apart from other buffets. Which bring me to service--or lack thereof. We received water and naan immediately but that was it. Once the manager came to ask if we were happy with the food. But our glasses weren't refilled until after we asked and, after waiting 15 minutes for the check, we went to the front and paid. Had the of lack of service and the two disappointments above not existed, this would have been a 5-star rating. If you've been to other buffets and are a bit daring, give Spice a try. You'll find distinct flavors from expertly blended spices and enough heat to take you to the next level.

Nice to the palate!

Went here with a friend and ended up going for the buffet. Was excited to see vada and Gol gappa on the menu. Food was delicious and the restaurant was helpful in telling us the spicy dishes from the less spicy ones. The ambience isn’t great but the food is good.

Delicious

By Matt M |

Wife and kids and I ate at Spice on a Friday evening. We arrived at 5:15, and though they weren't properly open (they close from 3:PM and reopen at 5:39) they let us in and seated us and took our drink order. We tried their Hyderabad Irani chai. It was great. We ordered: Palak Paneer, Tika Masala, Chicken Vindaloo, and Peppered Lamb. All were delicious, with the peppered lamb being my particular favorite. You can determine with the waiter how spicy you would like each dish. They were accurate, at least in making the dishes meant to be spicier much spicier and keeping the milder dishes mild. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We're thinking about going back again tonight. After all, I didn't get a photo!

It could have been better

By Vikas K |

This restaurant is located at a prime location. However, the food they serve is average. yet again, an Indian restaurant that fails to meet my expectations. The environment was shabby, service was mediocre and food was average.

Food good service eh

By Ruth H |

Wanted to be adventurous for Mother's Day so we ate at this place. The atmosphere is very diff from other restaurants. You feel like you are with the Indians from India. The place is buffet style. Hard to read the description of what each dish was. I only disliked one dish i ate, still don't know what it was. It tasted like sweet carrots to me, but who knows? Water is from the tap, so didn't care for that. The service was okay. Had to ask for more Nan, which reminds me of a tortilla. Had to ask for more drinks because everything we tried was extra spicy, hence the name. My family enjoyed the experience but wouldn't want to go back again.

OMG Returned to Find New Flavors

By Matt M |

Though they tout the buffet, I cannot stress highly enough that the dinner/supper(if you're from Midwest) experience far, far surpasses the buffet. Order you food! Be adventurous! The meals are better than anywhere else we've eaten in the states!

One of the 10 worse restaurants I have visited in 70 years!

By Chucumite |

The ambiance would have been great for a whacky movie, early 1906's pancake house with a salad bar of desiccated vegetables in repose. Absolutely ghastly. We should have left, but didn't. They could make something fresh. As we tried to understand what the waiter, or owner, or manager or whoever he was that took our order was describing it was lost in the wail of unattended babies and children yelling for attention. There were women with many children and appeared to be attached the the restaurant, although they obviously didn't work there because there were seven or eight tables covered with dirty dishes. I'll get this over quickly: the food was so bad I didn't request a doggie bag. I could never do that to a dog, much less my own. Give us time and we will seek out the best Indian food in town. There was plenty 15 years ago, but things have changed.

Uninspired food, dirty atmosphere, and I was sick afterwards.

By Kathe C |

Terrible experience. The food was marginal, at best. The fresh bread tasted like undercooked flour, each dish at the buffet had either tough meat, or overcooked vegetables, all with indistinct spices and flavoring. I had heard and read such good reviews so decided on a whim to stop in between errands, but was terribly disappointed. I did not finish my meal, did not feel well shortly afterwards, and was sick to my stomach several hours later.

Good taste

By petkin121 |

Good taste ang enjoyed food. Mid range spicy but was little salty. Service was quick. Ambiance was nice too. Felt bit costly.

YUM!!

By amor320 |

Honestly, some of these reviews suck. I LOVE THIS PLACE!! The owner is so kind and so are the staff, food can sometimes be spicier than you ask for but if you know how spices work.. that is to be expected. The food is authentic, tasty, and the service is great. I recommend this to anyone who wants indian food in SA.

Pluses . . . and Minuses

By Mona S |

Spice Indian gets high marks for both of our dinner entrees. The chicken curry was savory with a hint of cinnamon and spiced just right at "medium" hot. The palak paneer (spinach) likewise was sublime, creamy and flavorful. Both were served with a side of rice. Sadly, though, we have to take points off for the naan, which was crispy and crunchy like crackers, without the expected chewiness. Finally, the single lounge-tune playing on the piped-in music was set on infinite loop, making its way annoyingly into our evening. Silence would have been better.

excellent

We were visiting San Antonio from San Angelo and stopped by this place which was closer to the riverwalk. The food was very good and the staff were also very helpful and sweet. We were six people and all of us loved the food. Spicy upto the point! Go Spice Fine!!

Service - mediocre. Some food was ok, but cleanliness in general lacking. Both of us got sick, also.

Very good!

Just had dinner there this evening with two friends. The food was very good, appetizers an main dishes. Service was good too. The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. We plan on going there once more before we leave San Antonio.

Best indian food in town

By Kranthi R |

I been this place twice but never disappoint. I always order the Goat curry and garlic naan. I have also tried the chicken tikka masala. Highly recommended to go Spice. Great food and best service in town.

delicious!

By Traveling-TiaraG |

This place is fantastic. The atmosphere is very relaxing. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and fast. We ordered dosa and naan for appetizers. Had butter chicken, curry, and paneer. All excellent and spicy. We also had the rice kheer for dessert. I was very happy with the menu and we were very full by the end. It's a great place for dinner.

Amazing Food

This is my second week in San Antonio and I have been to SPICE twice already, Great Food and extremely courteous staff, highly recommend this restuarant, best indian food in the state of texas.I got myself a military discount too.

Simply delicious!

By Kelly K |

I was there last night and the food is delicious! I had the lamb korma, butter chicken and spinach paneer and I have to say they were all very tasty! Butter naan was great too! Most importantly the service was the highlight for me. Fatima was wonderful, attentive and went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. I’m a very satisfied customer and would highly recommend without a doubt. 10/10

Worth checking out if you are from out of town

By Rekha S |

It's hard to find good Indian restaurants that can do a good job with both south, north indian and indo-chinese cuisine and therefore this place was a great find! We got dosas for kids, Veg fried rice, Malai Kofta, Paneer butter masala, Naans, Channa masala and everything was awesome! Their chai was also great, only disappointment was the delay in making chai and the very small quantity we got for the long wait. If you are visiting SA, this is a great place to stop for a heavy meal!

Amazing flavors and variety

By Gaby De Lara |

Delicious place with great variety of fine Indian dishes. ROZINA provided an excellent costumer service. Spice it’s an inviting place to enjoy the rich indian flavors. Is the best place to eat Indian food, the chicken Birgany and the lemon rice taste just like the ones we tried in India.

Disappointed!

By Madhu Chadha |

Tried this restaurant twice and both the times food was not good. They don't know how to make north Indian dishes. Only thing they make good is sambhar. I ordered dosa and even that was terrible. I had to call the manager and told him even people from South India won't eat this. He made an excuse that chef who make dosa was not available that day. Service was OK but I am not going to this restaurant again.

Even bette the second time

By disfamof3 |

We have now been during lunch with the buffet and now supper and ordered from the menu. We LOVED everything we had from the menu! The buffet was nice to have variety but we will go for the menu items from now on unless we can’t make a decision on what we want. We had an amazing experience and the food was beyond amazing! We can’t wait to visit again.

Authentic Indian food

By Scott M |

The food here is really good. The restaurant atmosphere is basic with fixed tables and chairs. It appeared to be a converted IHOP. I really appreciated that they are very flexible on the amount of spice they put in the food and rate it from 1 to 4. Our server was excellent. The price is reasonable. I recommend this restaurant for good Indian food.

Most authentic north and South Indian cuisine.

By Amit Sawji |

One of the rare restaurant which serves authentic north and South Indian food. We visit this restaurant often. The buffet is very good and offers variety of items. The vegetable biryani is best. You can get authentic hyderabadi biryani here. The only thing is the quantity of raita is little less. I highly recommend this restaurant if you in San Antonio and craving for Indian food.

This is a good restaurant. The food was really good loved the options in the buffet. Evening menu is also good. The atmosphere and the service were also very good. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful
