This was one of our favorite meals we’ve had in a long time. We started off with pretzels, they come with mustard, a cheese type sauce, and rendered chicken fat. The mustard was our favorite but the others were interesting. We shared the Maultaschen(pasta) and Wienerschnitzel. Everything was wonderful. We also tried the Weihenstephaner Vitus beer, very smooth. We will definitely be back.

Awesome service, great beers & super food

By Big_Earl1969 |

Stammtisch is one of those bar/restaurants that you'll want to come back to again and again. In fact, I was so impressed with the service, food quality and selection of beers, I visited 3 times in 4 days. It was a super place to watch the World Cup and was very rowdy for both the US game & Germany game. This sister bar of Prost (another must-see) has incredibly friendly service and a fun atmosphere. It's classy but casual. Seating includes some booths, bar tops and a few long tables where guests are encouraged to join in and make new friends. Stammtisch in German is loosely translated as "a reserved table for special guests/regulars". They do a good job in making every guest feel like a long-time customer. I highly recommend it.

I usually do not like German beer but this was cool

By Vegandmore |

All german all the way, this hop head did not see a single IPA. But I had a dark lager and it was very good. Each beer has its own glass straight from the brewer. Server with a huge head. Very authentic. Any beer can be had in 3 different sizes. I had only heard of one beer on the list before. The beer I had was a brewery since 1538! Cool place to check out. Only had the fires but they were perfect.

Good pub with good German food

By TerisTravels2 |

If you like beer you will like this place. Personally not a beer drinker but respect their variety. Good German food. Pub atmosphere.

The beer was authentic, but food was a copy…

Perhaps it’s a bit challenging to find an authentic German chef here in America, or perhaps you just need to be a lucky restaurant owner to find the right person – but this restaurant made a valiant effort… And missed! Well the food tasted great, it certainly was not authentically German inflavor or preparation. The beers, however, where a reasonable selection of European brands. Even the draft beers tasted good! Great place with a modicum of European authenticity!

House Made Brats

By Bill K |

Stopped in for dinner last week to this very cool German restaurant. Luckily Oktoberfest is going on so there was a great selection of beers. I ordered the Bratwurst and it was cooked to perfection. The helpful bartender told me that they are made on premise. It was served ton top of fresh sauerkraut. I will be back again.

Great tasty German food!

We stopped by Stammtisch for delicious German food. The Schweinshaxe was so tasty - meat falls off the bones. Great restaurant for german food and beer! Would stop by again if we visit Portland.

Schmaltz

By Frank W |

Haven't had schmaltz(comes with the pretzel) for 30 years since mom made it at home. This is exactly the same. I always try the rabbit dishes here and they never disappoint.

Good German Food

By Patrick D |

We tried Stammtisch for dinner last night with a couple of friends. It was a Tuesday night and we arrived around 7:30. The ambiance was casual, lots of wood, relaxed, a good place to hang out with friends. We were seated immediately and ordered a round of beers. They have a pretty good selection of German beers to choose from. Something to please every palate. We weren't quite ready to order food yet. About that same time, a couple of large groups also arrived. They must not have been prepared for that as it was about 30 minutes before our waitress returned to check on us. For dinner we ordered the meat and cheese platter, the rabbit, the leek pasta, the sauerbraten, and the Wienerschnitzel. The meat and cheese platter contained a variety of pickled items, cheeses and charcuterie. Very tasty and I would order that again. The sauerbraten would have been better if the meat was a little less fatty and trimmed better. The Wienerschnitzel was huge and tasty. The pasta was good but pretty salty. I liked that there was a variety of German foods and drinks to choose from. Our server was friendly but a bit scattered and I think the wait was pretty long. The food in general was interesting and tasty. I would go back to try additional dishes.

Good Food, And Also German

By andsomething |

I recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a delicious meal, and it is a plus that they make great German dishes. We tried the Drachenköpfe. Although they were out of rockfish, it was still tasty made with cod. The Braten Hasen (yes, fried rabbit) was so delicious! My sister tends to avoid foods outside her comfort zone, but after we went on about how good it was, she took a bite. And another. And then I had to stop her from eating all of it. Our favorite dish of the night was the Wienerschnitzel. I'd order that again next time I'm in Portland. There are several beers to choose from. If you don't recognize a beer you like, just ask and they will help you choose the best one for you. Our server talked to us about our tastes and her suggestions were great.

Great German beer selection

By ScubaSteve |

I really like the variety of German beers they have available. The food was really good. Didn’t give them 5 stars because it took a long time to get my beer every time I ordered it

Not to My Expectations

By Curt P |

I spent more than half of my 60 odd years in Germany, and have eaten more than a little bit of German cuisine. Among my favorites is the Jaegerschnitzel, which I've had in many locales throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and even right here in the good, ol' US of A. In fact, a couple of the best that I've ever had were in Hayward, California, and Radcliff, Kentucky. I'm sorry to say that this wasn't among them. It was prepared fine, with the right ingredients, but the meat itself (pork tenderloin?) and the gravy tasted different - not bad - and when I stopped comparing it to others it was fine on its own. The pub was full at 5:00 and american fussball (soccer) was playing on tv. The ambiance was there - just too bad that nobody spoke German. A number of German biers both on tap and bottle, but no wine list that I saw. It was like "Germany-lite" - the sort of place one might expect of Germany if they never stepped out of the US.

Excellent german food and brews. Cool to see authentic taps and glasses being used. The food is excellent. Definitely recommend this place if you are in Portland and like German food

Best of Germany

By Carole M |

Has the vibe of a corner pub, but.....huge selection of German Beer's. Menu divided into appetizers, small plate, medium plates and large plates. All are yummy and portioned to your appetite. Must try on the large plate is a pork shank (easily shared). Homemade pretzels to start and work down the menu from there.

Great German food in NE Portland

By Deanna H |

We ordered potato cakes, pumpkin soup, pasta filled with leek fondue and Schweinshaxen (slow roasted pork). All delightful and expertly prepared. The staff knows the menu well.

Great German Beer and Selection, and Delicious Food

By Richard B |

I love great German beer, and frequent the Prost! pubs in Seattle regularly, so wanted to visit one of their pubs in Portland. I chose Stammtisch because they had a more expansive beer and food selection than the Portland Prost! The beer selection is what really struck me - world class lagers such as Andechs Hell and Fruh Kölsch, and they did not disappoint. The surprise was the food. Most of the Prost! pubs in Seattle have simpler menus (though Feierabend has a larger kitchen and more variety) - the waitstaff does a fine job preparing the food, but the selection is limited. Stammtisch has a more adventurous menu - I had the Backhendl mit Bratkartoffel (paprika-spiced roast chicken with fried potatoes and roasted vegetables) and it was amazing. The service at the Prost! pubs is usually very good, and the service at Stammtisch was no exception. Max was a great, attentive bartender, and was happy to answer any questions I had.

You'll feel well-cared for

By Miriam F |

When you strike out at Pambiche come here and you might have a new fave in the neighborhood. It's a very cozy spot on a cold rainy night. They pour excellent German beer and wine (didn't try the wine but they have some German white wines on draft/nitro. Sounded interesting.) with respect and affection. The menu finds complements in the drink and is a little different and well-prepared. If you're at all inclined do have the smoked pork shank. We felt very warmly welcomed and appreciated and well-stoked for our walk home. The sign is small and unlit--a little tricky on a dark wet night.

Authentic German Food in Portland

By ncomac |

I spent three years stationed in Germany enjoying the food and beer. This restaurant is definitely THE authentic German food restaurant. Dozens of authentic German beers on tap and served in the appropriate glass from the matching brewery. I regularly order the Sweinhaxen with spätzle smothered in mushroom gravy. The best.

Lecker

By worldchamp2000 |

This was my 3rd visit in 3 years. I only wish it was close to where I live because I would go more often. The food is excellent, especially the Schweinhaxe!!! I look forward to my next visit!

A brew pub with good German food.

By Steve |

You can have your own October Fest here all year long. I like the German sweet and sour red cabbage. That is not what they serve here. Their food is good, but not what I was expecting.

busy, for a reason

By cidertom |

German themed pub. good beer, friendly server. The food portions are good to excessive. The staff was stretched a bit thin when we were there, but they were trying real hard to keep customers happy.

Das ist Gut

By Jolene Edwards |

Having been to the bar Prost many times, we decided to try out Stammtisch, their sister location. While Prost focuses more on German beer with a few delightful German food snacks such as sausages and pretzels, Stammtisch focuses more on German meals. The ambiance here is cozy and homey, and very open as is what I understand the German style. The beer was delightful as we have come to expect from Prost and I very much enjoy that the different beer are served in their respective appropriate glassware. I am a huge fan of schnitzel so of course I had the Jagershnitzel, and I found it to be quite good. I'm certain I will return back here, you can't go wrong with either the beer or the food.

It was a little piece of Germany (cuz of the Beir)

By RonE52024 |

The Curry Wurst was great but not like ya ya can get on Alexander platz or outside of a station on the S baun but it was worthy :) Beir was great and good atmosphere

excellent

By agentCodyboy |

if you like the German food and beer, you will love this place. it is a modern pub, busy, do not accept reservation. they have a lot of german beer on menu and serve in their own brand beer glass. friendly service. Their food is awesome. we had the sausage, Schweinshaxen, roasted chicken and schnitzel with spaetzle. we ordered the arugula salad and extra spaetzle (b/c it is that good) as side dishes. I have to say they are all very good except for the Schweinshaxen. It has a good flavour to it but just too salty in our opinion. The roasted chicken is extraordinary; very juicy and tender. I would love to go back.

Wilkommen, Everybody!

By EdgarCosset |

Stammtich fully lives up to its name in spirit. What it lacks in “echtes essen,” it more than makes up for in “gemutlichkeit,” This is evident in the friendly service and sensible non-kitschy décor. It has the feel of an honest German gasthaus translated to Oregon. But think about it...how wrong can you go with over a dozen barrels of really excellent German bier? (Their strong suit is weissbier.) In Germany a stammtich may be a single table reserved for special friends. But at this Stammtich the whole place is filled with locals all enjoying each other’s company. It was a roomful of very happy near-east side PDXers, and I couldn’t believe how packed it was for a dark and rainy midweek night. They don’t take reservations, but we happily waited at the bar and were quickly seated. The menu offers the right stuff and is as good as or better than the few other similar venues in Portland. I chose the wienerschnitzel just because it seems so basic. It scratched the itch with flavorful meat and thin tasty breading. But with pork instead of veal, it would elsewhere be more properly a schwieneschnitzel. (My guess is, however, it would then be less recognizable to your average Amerikanische Sprecher.) The accompanying bratkartoffeln was satisfying, but the mystery coleslaw would mercifully never be seen on the other side of the Rhine! My companion had the schweinhaxen expecting a full knuckle but enjoyed the shredded shank nevertheless. He barely touched the spaetzle. We split the strudel and agreed it was a really nice slice of American apple pie. The bottom line? Go, enjoy, be happy! You will certainly be welcome.

Great little German pub

By Wayne A |

First time here and I was impressed. Wait staff was great, helpful, friendly and exactly what you want for a place like this. All the beers are imported from Germany and the food is the same as what you’d find over there as well. There is a large selection of different kinds of beers. There is also a good variety of food choices from appetizers and small plates to full dinners. Higher recommend.

Delicious German Food, Great Service

By AliceInPDX |

We had a delicious meal here. Spaetzle was wonderful, and the potato pancakes were amazing. The sausage was moist and fine grained (I have a thing about dry, coarse sausage). Loved the seasonal veggies, the salad, the pretzel. Wish we'd had room to try the schnitzel. And, of course, the great beer. Service was very friendly and just the right level of attentiveness. Prices are reasonable for the quality. Get a bunch of dishes and share around the table. The only downside is that the restaurant diagonally across the street allows smoking outside, and on this lovely summer evening Stammtisch's windows were open and the smoke occasionally wafted in. Other than that, this place could not be better.

An after dark stroll brought me back for a Schwarzbier

By RSNN |

I was going to see Mars Retrieval Unit play at the Goodfoot later onand had plenty of time to kill. The idea of heading to Stammtisch and have a dark beer sounded like a great way to relax and have something better than what I would find inside Goodfoot. So off I went to this haven of great German beers. I sat at the bar and ordered a Kostritzer Schwarzbier for $6. It came in a distinctive tall glass. and a real treat to drink. I really should return and spend more time here and tried a few other German beers.

Authentic German in a Casual Atmosphere

By Dcookfp |

We went into this restaurant thinking we'd have a beer and maybe a snack while watching some football. But after seeing the food that was being delivered to those sitting near us, we knew we'd be staying for dinner. Large plates of excellent main dishes served with red cabbage and spätzle. Not just the sausage and weinerschnitzel, although these looked great, but a variety of main dishes including trout, small plates and appetizers.

Perfect for Winter

By Heather H |

Great spot! For someone like me who isn't all about IPAs, this was a big score. The German bier selection is outstanding. I had the Weltenburger Barock Dunkel and a Köstritzer Schwarzbier. Hubby had the Hofbrau Original and the Paulaner Oktoberfest. Food is first-rate too! We went for the burger, which is number two or three this year on the Portland's Best Burger list. Also had the Linseneintopf, which is lentil stew with bratwurst, pork shank & bacon. Fantastic! If I'd had room, I would have also gotten the pretzel plate and the warm potatoes with cheese and dill. Thank god we have company coming who will enjoy going back with me next week!

Really enjoyed our Sunday evening here!

By Kathy G |

Had never been here but wanted to take our friends to a German restaurant for early dinner. I'm so happy we took a chance on a new place, the food was great! I ordered rabbit, the medium size serving was just right to still have room for the plum ice cream. Both were excellent! The others ordered Jager schnitzel, a larger serving which proved adequate to share after a plate with two bratwurst. A German Pub feel, but a little too dark to easily read the menu. We will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Delightful, Delicious

By 03Val48 |

We met friends here for lunch, and ended up eating, drinking and talking for a couple of hours. It was all delightful! The server didn't mind that we kept ordering small amounts of food so we could linger and enjoy them, and was cheery the whole time. Our friends have spent quite a bit of time in Germany, and they were really happy with the selection of beers and with the food. We had delicious sausages and pretzels and they ordered a variety tray that looked wonderful. So - if you're hankering for Germany, this is a great local place in Portland to satisfy your craving!

Good German Pub and Restaurant

By Jerry W |

Stammtisch is in its first month and things are already very smooth. The on-tap German bier selection is just terrific, especially if you are in need of an Andechs fix (and who isn't?). The menu is very traditional German and things we've had taste like the homeland. Nothing fancy here, although the place is comfortable and welcoming (and very nicely remodeled from the previous place). This feels like the real thing. Nice place and a welcome addition to the Portland dining scene.

Fine neighborhood German Pub

By h2oTECH |

Small, noisey, busy neighborhood German pub. Large selection of beers. Great bar tenders. Ample selection of food, but menu is not extensive. Street parking in residential area.

Very cozy German pub

By Donna S |

Back in Portland for my daughter's wedding and this gem was 2 blocks from her apartment. The men enjoyed the vast bier selection which is served in 3 sizes in the glasses from the brewers. I had a nice Riesling and my daughter enjoyed a nice bourbon. We ordered a variety of dinners including sauerbrauten with spaetzele and red cabbage, a meat and cheese platter, a curried wurst as well as a burger on a pretzel bun. Everything was delicious and the servers were super friendly in this cozy neighborhood eatery. Glad we found this treasure since we love to find good German fare on our travels.

Worth the trip

By Joel M |

We looked online and took the bus from downtown to the restaurant. The stop directions we got from the trimet website were a bit off. Walked a few long blocks to get there. Friendly staff. We really enjoyed the potato pancakes ad generous portions of shnitzel.

Great Birthday Dinner!

By Cheryl B |

This was our first time to Stammtisch, and it won’t be our last! We came to celebrate with friends and found the atmosphere to be warm and festive. Best of all, the drinks and all food items were excellent! We sampled from various parts of the menu. Absolutely everything was delicious! I had the trout dish, and it was a flavor explosion...highly recommend! Our waiter was awesome, too! Good food, good friends, good times. We will be back soon!

My go-to place when I am craving german food and beer

By Christoph L |

This is my go-to place when I am craving taste from my home. Beer - WOW - they have a great selection of german draft beer AND serve the beer with the authentic glass. Can't get better than that. Food - very delicious german food. I say it's better than most places because everybody has his/her own opinion about what authentic means. Germany has many regions, styles and cultural differences and of course many styles and recipes when it comes to food. Eating at Stammtisch is eating comfort food. I LOVE IT

Ahhhhh, My German Food Fix

By Sue Morrison |

I was stationed in Germany in the late '70's and have been hooked on German food since. I drove 150 miles to visit this restaurant, because one of my customer's sons is a chef there, and I "heard" the food and BEER was awesome. I was not disappointed in either of those. Very authentic! And the Apple Strudel was unbelievable! They have a LARGE selection of German beer, but the food, OMG, it was so good. I am looking forward to going back and trying other things on the menu!

Great German beers and food in Portland

By ThomasHome |

Having lived in Germany for many years I can honestly say that this was a great experience and all of us loved the place. We've been there with 7 people and enjoyed a variety of beers (15 to 20 beers on tap, if I remember correct) and food during the stay. Most dishes were very authentic and the German beer selection was excellent. I also loved the fact that they had three Octoberfest beers on tap. It is early September, so the perfect time for 'fresh' Octoberfest beer. Taste and presentation of the food was excellent and the menu offers a lot of 'classic' German dishes, which I guess go well for an all American audience. I would have loved to see a bit more contemporary Germany cuisine on the menu. This was the only reason I gave it four instead of five stars, but this is a personal taste preference :-). I would go there anytime again!

A real shocker for my wife and I, good good good.

By Randy B |

While we were staying in Portland, we wanted to take our host out to dinner. She made several suggestions and we decided on German food. We were glad we did. Our waitress, Amelia was handling several tables, (ours had the least people and we had 5 at ours). She gave excellent service, helped us pronounce the names, explained what the things were and did it all with a great smile. The place was packed and I was told that it usually is. That being the case, the service was still fast enough to suit us.

Lovely Authentic German bar.

By Aimee B |

Our friends took us here and it was great. Authentic German beers are served in their corresponding pint glasses.

A senior moment causes you to get cut off?

By AllergicFoodie |

Good reviews are easy for me to write, bad ones are much harder. This unfortunately falls into that hard category. After a business christmas party last night we walk down a block from the rooms that we were staying at. We had 9 of us and we were in a festive mood, 2 of my friends came in a little after the main group, and since we had already ordered and the waitress was busy, 1 friend went to get drinks for the other friend and a refill for me. After he ordered he went to pay, and like most of us have all done, me more often then not, he didn't remember which pocket of the 3 layers of winter clothes he had put his wallet. And just based on that the bartender cut him off. Seriously? My friend is a server himself, at one of the top restaurants in the state, and he has the 4 diamond pin to prove what a great server he is. He would never put a fellow server or restaurant in jeopardy by drinking to much, and besides we weren't driving and they continued to serve us and some of us had had way more then my friend. None of us will be back despite the great mulled wine and good service from our waitress. Stammtisch needs to reevaluate their thresholds for being drunk, and then apply it evenly to everyone. And if being forgetful is a threshold, you might as well shut your doors now. Shame on you.

Great German Style meals and Beer

By PGPalau |

A nice restaurant that has a lot of German flair and offers great German food and a nice variety of German beers. Friendly service, maybe the staff should learn some German words so they could great you in German or say good bye and thank you too. Server and Bartender where very friendly and the food and drink menu explains the German dishes very well. A place I sure will visit again when coming to Portland.

Delicious

By Teri S |

My husband, myself and 6 friends enjoyed our first of many dinners at Stammtisch. The service was good, the atmosphere is very Portland. Nice indoor and outdoor seating with many windows. I had the Riesling Braised Trout with vegetables and potato pancakes as an appetizer. The trout was the best I've ever had. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal. Great location on NE 28th & Flanders. We will be going back.

Probably the worst service I ever had at a restaurat. Server wa Jordan

By debpiet |

Went in thinking it would be fun.Had not had German food in a while. My boyfriend and i were on a date night. We asked that the courses come out one at at time to give us time. The German pancakes came out immediately and before we could finish them the pasta and meat course came out at the same time. I told the waitress, Jordan, we asked to have a least several minutes between courses.which she agreed to. When I asked what happened after we had already discussed this, she said most people want all the food at once. I told her that is not what we discussed. She offered to take the food back and warm it but it was already cooked and pasta rewarmed did not sound optimal nor did reheating the vegetables on the meat course. She could have cared less about the service and did not come back to the table to check on anything. Another waitress saw we were not being attended to and came over. There was no apology. She simply did not care. I did not eat dinner. My boyfriend took some of the food home but left most of it as the evening was ruined. the other waitress brought a $25 gift card to the table but I told her i had no intention of ever coming back. We had drinks and ordered three things off the menu. One was the most expensive item. We had planned to stay and enjoy a meal but it was cut very short and we left with our drinks still mostly full and nothing really touched on the pork course. Truly one of the worse dining experiences I have every had in Portland.

Very good bier menu and very good food menu.

By BaronMIke |

One of the best and most authentic German places i have been to. Great food and great beer. Menu included all the classics like Weinerschnitzel, Schweinhaxen, Hasen and others. The beer is poured perfectly in the correct glass.

German Delight

By Sawadeeann |

Always checking out different German places when traveling, I had this place bookmarked. I am so glad we got to go here. Not being a beer expert, I told my waiter what I like when I do drink one: rye or brown ale. He quickly was able to recommend the Weltenburger Barock Dunkel. The 3L is $5 and a great bargain. It came out super cold (matched the cold weather outside) and tasted good. It was not heavy or as dark as I usually like, but very easy to drink. I ordered the spätzle $5, german pretzel $6, frites $5. The honey ordered the platter of 3 sausages $16 (hausgemachte wurst) and a side of german potato salad. Spätzle was delicious with no bacon. Being pescatarian I loved that as most spätzle has bacon in it, whereby even I make that way. The pasta pieces were longer than usual, but delicious. Some places over cheese theirs. No cheese here. They also give you a huge bowl that the 3 of us shared. The frites were crispy and came with homemade ketchup. Pretzle was soft and pliable and came w 2 sauces: one really just tasted like oil, so I passed on that. The hon loved the homemade sausages and potato salad. The salad had bacon so I can’t tell you how they were personally. Overall, this place was delicious. Food was prepared deliciously. It’s not old school dark and heavy, but unpretentious. The service was impeccable We would definitely come back again.

Authentic German Food

By Stephanie F |

My husband and I have been here twice now and we were very impressed with both visits. The food is great and authentic . The flavors are exactly what I experienced growing up in a second generation German household . The prices are good and the beer selection is fabulous. The only complaint that I have is the community seating . I know it's the " in thing " but community seating is very uncomfortable, I have no desire to share a table with strangers and it makes having a personal conversation over dinner impossible. Besides that this is a great place to eat .

Fun, authentic!

By anne g |

I have been here a couple of times, their tap list is legit German. Food is good, service is friendly and efficient. Will definitely be returning again and again.

First German eatery experience a positive one

By mudixon |

This place (almost) transported me Germany! Except for American sports on the bar TV and American pop music playing, the menu, bar, decór, and jovial ambience really made it special. On a Saturday night, around 6:30, we had a 1 hour wait for a seat for 6 people, but we got seats at the bar and enjoyed some German beer. I had never eaten at a German restaurant and I have simple tastes. The menu offered several options (Hamburger, for example) for those less adventurous, but I chose a roasted chicken (listed under the "large" section of the menu). It was incredibly tasty. My colleagues got different selections off the menu and all were quite happy with the results. One of our friends was originally from Germany, and he was very pleased with the food. That says something! As many small, compact restaurants can be, this one was very loud, making conversation hard to hear much of the time. People were having a good time, and that's the kind of place this is, so don't expect a romantic evening.

I wanted to try some German Beer and loved this amazing place.

By RSNN |

I saw this place listed for German Beer and food and thought that it would be a nice place to check out for a total change of pace. It was a warm hot day and they had all their large windows open. and the place looked like a real gem. I looked over the bier list feeling a bit clueless and asked the bartender questions about what dark beers that they had and what they were like. Glad I did. He sure was a great help. I ordered the Kostritzer Schwarzbier and some Frites. Only came to $11 for both. and the beer came in a very unique and impressive glass. There is outdoor seating, tables inside and of course at the bar. I sat at the bar admiring the taps and the items behind the bar. There was a deer head mounted at the end of the bar. a large flag up on the ceiling. A sports game was playing on the TV set up on the wall behind the bar. I loved the beer they have here and plan to drop in from time to time to try out more of the great beer that they have here. A very good place with excellent service. And an excellent atmosphere. So glad i decided to check this place out

Bavaria in Portland

By Seattletraveler98107 |

A slice of Bavaria in Portland brought to you by the folks who also own Prost! Nice menu - definitely try the curry wurst appetizer, and the Schnitzel is well cooked and a large portion. An extensive variety of German beers on tap and in bottles. A fun place to enjoy a pretty authentic German meal.

Finally... at last! Zum Voll!

By Melissa S |

After living in Germany 5 years, I have yet to find a place like this in Portland. A Stammtisch is the table without a cloth on it in the restaurant where people gather after work before going home. You might know the people and you might not.. but all are there for the same reason. I have a special place in my heart for the Stammtisch. and when I took a friend to try this version out... I was not disappointed... the only challenge is what what to order first!

Excellent, Authentic German Essen und Trinken

By Bill H |

This is one of our local restaurants so my wife and I come here often. Her favorite is the maltaschen, which is usually available only for dinner but can also be had for lunch if the kitchen isn't too busy and you ask really nicely. The bier menu ist ausgeseichnet. All around, our favorite German restaurant in Portland. On nice days, there's outdoor seating.

Birthday dinner.

Great German restaurant. The schnitzel was delicious. I had the Jaggerschnitzel and the hunters sauce was perfect, the spaetze was great. The have an excellent German beers on tap.... We will go back.

Not so authentic german food

By Marco Spaghettiman |

I know exactly how german food tastes like, I lived together with german folks and I travelled to Germany many many times in my life. The sausage with krauts I ate at Stammtisch was an average american imitation of German food; the potato salad was tasty but totally wrong (german potato salad is a completely different dish). I would definitely come back for the beers and atmosphere, with lower expectations about the food.

Authentic German Fare

If you ever miss the German kitchen, go to the Stammtisch. It was my second time there and I was every time impressed with the quality. The selection of German beers is great and the food is more than plenty.

I can not vouch that it is authentic German cuisine. I suspect the menu is Americanized, but it was pretty decent food. I had shnitzel, others had a Rueben. I liked the German beer selection. The staff was friendly and prompt, fun place to stop.

SLOW service

By Danielle F |

Was excited to try this based on all the great reviews. Cute place, came on Saturday afternoon about 3ish and they weren’t busy but took 10 min for anyone to take drink order and those took a bit to get and they didn’t come all at once. No one came back to take our order so had to flag down server. Food came and it was very good. Wiener schnitzel was crispy and delicious, schweinhaxen was good as well. They were missing some standard fare i love like dumplings but that’s ok. I deducted a star because of the seriously deficient service today but I’d try it again and chalk this up to off day.

Enjoyable restaurant

By John E |

We were a party of 7, all ordering different dishes, and everyone was very pleased with their meal. Wienerschnitzel, sauerbraten, and duck confit (a special offering that night) all stood out. The Bavarian pretzel appetizer was very good but it's a bit like a fancy breadstick so next time I will try something more unusual like the currywurst. Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. They also have a reasonable offering of German and German style beers on tap and even more German beer by the bottle. Needless to say, we all enjoyed at least a couple of pints! As others have remarked, it is a bit noisy inside but our two hard of hearing gents were able to manage. We dined on a Thursday nightand found the noise level went down considerably by 8pm.

Go to Germany Without a Passport

By CWC |

I read about Stammtisch in a New York Times travel story and it seemed like a visit was called for. From the Westin downtown it was a quick $10 Lyft ride to the restaurant. It was a Friday afternoon and when I got there just before 5pm I was able to grab the last stool at the bar. There was still room at a few communal tables for couples but by 5:15 there was a line & deservedly so. The Stammtisch is a simple place with a small menu and one just might swear they were in Bavaria by the warm & welcoming atmosphere. My Bretzel ($5.00) came with chicken schmaltz, cheese and mustard - Best Pretzel I've ever had. The Times article mentioned the Schweinhaxen with spaetzel and red cabbage so that would be my entree. OMG - a huge, gorgeous shank with blistered golden skin appeared before me and the meat was tender and full of flavor. The skin, while sinful, was heavenly. Easily enough for two people and at $22.00 a bargain. All german bier offered vom fass. The Paulaner Oktoberfest was a little over $5 for 1/2 Liter and it was outstanding. Malty sweet, it was an absolute joy. Located near 28th and Burnside, the Stammtisch is worth the trip. Take a cab, Uber or Lyft and spend a fun evening with friends. Highly recommended!

Great pub food in SE Portland

By PaulalovesPortland |

Our family chose Stammtisch for our annual Christmas dinner gathering and enjoyed this SE Portland pub immensely! Started with the meat and cheese plate which I would highly recommend. I ordered the braised trout which was cooked to perfection and had great flavor. Servers were friendly and accommodating for our large group. The ambiance is really good for a pub setting. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Wanted the German experience like we had in Bend!

By LaurieB980 |

While we enjoyed eating at Stammtisch, we had to sit and eat at the bar as it was packed! We got our favorite schnitzel entree that we hoped would be like the Prost! restaurant's entrees in Bend as they are "sister" restaurants. These were good, but not quite what we experienced at the other restaurant, I'm afraid. Guess where we will be eating on our next Bend adventure trip?!!? PROST!! And it is the best German food we have had outside of our 5 years in Germany!

Hot and Cold Thoughts - Needs another look!

By Mike W |

Nice woody decor with communal tables. German style.. ;-) Service was very helpful and attentive. German Beer selection is probably the best in Portland! Not only that, but served in appropriate glassware and at the correct temperature! Very nice touch! We were only there for Lunch which has a limited menu. I need to go back for dinner as the menu is more expansive and interesting.... The Brotzeit Teller, a Meat and cheese plate. Met with mixed reviews. The Chicken Liver Pate was very dense rich and tasty, the star of the plate. There was a cold meat wrapped in some kind of fatty substance, I don't now what it was called, but it was rather off putting texture wise and rather flavorless. The house Made Pickles were outstanding! There a clump of something that looked like slices of Bolonga mixed with cheese and pickled stuff. It was Ok. The cheeses were just OK, nothing exciting to my palate. The german Salami was OK, meaty but lacked depth. The German Seeded Wheat bread was very good, the plain French Bread was just Frech Bread. Not enough of either for this huge plate of gooey things... We had mixed feeling on this plate, there were highs and lows. Bretzel - warm bavarian pretzel house mustard, schmaltz, & obatzda. The Obatzda was very tasty cheese spread. 2nd best thing we ate. Schmaltz was Schmaltzy... Chickeny fatty goodness. The Preztel was nice and warm. Still not enough pretzel for all the spreads... Once the pretzel is gone, what do you do with left over spreads??? Can't put it on the Meat and Cheese Board breads... there wasn't enough of that either. I guess we could of asked for more bread... Maybe our bad. All in all... It's worth another look! I'd like to try the Dinner menu. I'm on the fence right now... Could be great or all just so-so... Another review will come...

Close to Bavarian Stubes

By Timothy C |

Went to this icon of German bier and cuisine in Portland during dumpling week. One of the advertised dumplings was leberknodel supe. The stuffing of the dumplings was right; but they shouldn't have been dumplings. Just clear broth and the none encased dumpling. Beer fabulous--Andechs in the USA!

Exactly the German bar you need

By jackwidely |

Still needing good covid practices though fully vaccinated, we went for happy hour and found they have many covered outdoor tables on two side of the building and sparse seating inside too. Monday at 5pm- they filled up quickly! Drank beer. Pilsners are great. have a few. or one large stein. small plates were perfect from the pretzel to small potatoes (which great cheese spread) to a trio of sausage with sauerkraut . and Spätzle and the potato pancake too! All were exactly as you'd expect in a fine German bar. wish we tried large meals, but those 5 small plates filled up us the two of us nicely. will return for sure.

How about comfortable seats AND good food?

By Julie O |

My husband and I went looking for a great place to have lunch on a warm summer day. We wandered a bit in the Southeast neighborhoods and stumbled across Stammtisch. I like German food and have lived for years in Germany, but have rarely had great German food in this country—heck it’s hard enough to get in Germany! The first sthing I noticed were people nesting in place—young people—though the seats were board hard. They were, in fact wooden benches, with no other option. What’s up with that trend? How about comfortable seats that invite you to another beer? But back to the nesters. Some were playing dominoes, some playing cards. All were drinking beer. And to the subject of beer, Stammtisch has a great selection vom Fass (on tap). I had a fairly prosaic (but good) Zunft Kölsch, but next time I will definitely try their cider/applewine made with Speierling, the small sour fruit of a tree related to Mountain ash, which is the way cider is traditionally made in the South of Germany. I had the currywurst, which I can recommend if you like curry at all—but if you’re a guy you’d better order two or three, as the portions are quite small. The fries, which are a mandatory Currywurst accompaniment, were “ok”, but the sausage—the wurst—was great. My husband, however, ordered what I wish I had: simple bratwurst with sauerkraut. Someone is paying attention to this bit of the menu. The sauerkraut was NOT sour, it was deliciously savory with the flavor of butter and meat drippings. The bratwurst was a small but refined version of this much abused sausage which, in this country, often tries --and fails-- to turn itself into a hearty hotdog. This was accompanied by a bread roll, which on the outside resembled an excellent German Brötchen, but was too fine crumbed and hence a bit tough, though my husband called it “perfect for the purpose”. Being a terrible bread snob I asked the waiter who made it and she said they sourced them from Phillippe’s bakery, which is a start, but for my taste an odd choice considering that the best baker in town (Ken’s Artisan) is right up the street. Service was grindingly slow, but as I had my cold Kölsch and an open summer window, who cares, right? Just don’t go there if you’re in a hurry.

German food at its best

By K B |

We spent a girls weekend in Portland and, although we already have a lot of favorite restaurants, decided to eat at places we had never been. Everyone agreed on German food to help narrow our choices and we were off to Stammtisch. What a wonderful find! The waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful, and recommended a different beer for each meal. We had a couple of starters. The paprika Camembert was soooo good. The potato pancakes were good. The wiener schnitzel was amazing! We also ordered the jaeger schnitzel, roasted chicken and a rabbit dish. I cannot describe how good everything was. We were all completely stuffed and so incredibly happy with our meal. If you are in the mood for great German food, check out Stammtisch! We haven't stopped talking about it!

Great foo, Great service... what’s not to lick?

By Simone P |

Got there Sat nigh... hungry/in a hurry... Rowan was super great at the bar... made recommendations of dishes and wine that were just perfect! Jägerschnitzel was great (can’t I ate all of it!) and the wine was wonderful! Will visit again when back in town!

Tasty

By 441victor |

I had the weinerschinel (sp) . it was so delicious. Thin and crunchy crust, tasty tender pork inside And a German draft beer that doubled as an Olympic swimming pool

Dinner

By bontontraveler |

We had lunch/dinner here. The beer was good. The food was mediocre. The waiter was very accommodating & friendly but he was the only one there & he was super busy. We truly love authentic German food & this was not it!

Solid

By Dianna430M |

Solid! Personable, vibrant staff who know their menu and are extraordinarily helpful. The food was good. The ambience was lively and entertaining. Stammtish’s menu is limited but you can most definitely get a well prepared meal at this establishment. We started with the pretzel and enjoyed a bowl of beer cheese soup. Both palatable. Mr. Wonderful had the schnitzel, warm potato salad and shredded carrot, there wasn’t a crumb left on his plate. I ordered the Maultaschen stuffed with leeks. They were quite good! We ordered spätzle and a knackwurst to take home. The spätzle is sautéed in butter and it was good and I will be turning it into kasespätzle this evening! The beer list is decent and they are able to make recommendations to what your preferences are. We look forward to returning.

Stammisch German Restaurant

By Alan F |

One of the best German restaurants we have eaten at in the United States. The Veal was so tender and delicious and the beers we had were wonderful. Reminded my wife and I of eating in Germany.

Authentisch Food and Hervorragend Beer

By Phil H |

Stammtisch may be hard to pronounce, but their food and beer is very easy to love. I took my "all things German" snob roommate here for her birthday and she was impressed (as was I) with everything. The decor is European pub/cafe. The service was sincerely friendly, as we were greeted upon entering. The bartender and wait staff were very well acquainted with the large variety of beers, recommending variations matched to our tastes. After our first pint, we decided that what was coming out of the kitchen smelled so tempting we ordered full meals and we were not disappointed!! This was some of the most authentic German fare I've ever had and my roommate kept comparing it favorably to her grandfather's cooking!! I must warn anyone thinking of dropping in for a quick meal, in typical German tradition, this is a place to linger and enjoy. In closing, it was very clean, the service was timely and friendly and the beer and food were amazing! Take the time to fall in love with Stammisch's !! ps - Voted bar of the year by Willamette Week

Great place for German beer and traditional German dishes

By travelgirl282 |

My husband and son love to come here for its beer, and its traditional German dishes like Schnitzel and curry wurst. Friendly environment, good food.

Super Dinner With Another Couple

By MRK-Portland |

We had an excellent meal and great service. As always parking in Portland is tricky, especially around dinner time and in a busy district - but once inside it was all good. The two boys had the hog shanks and the ladies had salads. They were also kind enough help us try to devour the pork, red cabbage, and spätzle. We didn't succeed so we took home delicious leftovers. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone venturing into German food.

Authentic and delicious food and beer

By JoyceI_13 |

We crave good, authentic German food and friends (one of whom is German) recommended this restaurant. We tried the Jagerschnitzel, Wienerschnitzel and Haxe - all amazingly good. With spaetzle and red cabbage salad. Loved it all and would go back. Draft beer choices were also good. It was a warm evening and with the windows open, felt like a nice, neighborhood, casual fun hang-out.

Well worth a visit!

By Dreamer171053 |

Great selection of German beers & great food! We’ve lived in Germany on two occasions and it was wonderful to be able to enjoy good German beer and food here in the US. We went on a perfect summer Saturday afternoon, so we enjoyed our meals at the tables under the trees....very pleasant! (Not quite a German Bier Garten, but still very nice). I wouldn’t hesitate to take friends there and we’ve added it to our list of “Favorite Portland Restaurants” ....we’ll be back!

Fabulous! Best meal in Portland!

By MamaFleisch |

Wonderful German food, great atmosphere. We dined on a busy Monday evening, sitting at the bar. Bartender was busy, but made time for conversation; we also chatted with those sitting beside us. The food made the evening, however. We split three dishes, each one better than the previous: the curry wurst appetizer, maultaschen, schnitzel, and an amazingly light apple strudel. Can't wait to come back!

Lotsa Good

By Tonypose |

This small neighborhood restaurant and bar serves many great German beers as well as genuine German cuisine. A small simple restaurant with limited but fantastic wait staff. I had the clams in paprika sauce which was great. Lotsa good food and drink here!

Tasty Authentic German food at a good price

By Purrfect |

From kleine (small) to Mittel (medium) to full dinners, Stammtisch offers tasty food that brought back memories of southern Germany, the currywurst and frites was great. The pork shank dinner was huge and delicious. Stammtisch is a great new neighborhood spot.

Very good !

By Dave R |

This is a real gem of a space. Great selection of German beers on tap and by bottle. Good comfort food. Don't eat here if your calorie watching. Nice sidewalk seating. Super nice servers and really good value. The chicken and trout are simply amazing, perfectly prepared and cooked. Be warned, the chicken dish takes about 30 minutes from time of order. Enjoy...Prost.

Great beer menu and German food

By Vicar100 |

We treated ourselves to a wide variety of food and drinks. The wine list is very limited but we enjoyed the Pinot Blanc. Beers were: Aylinger BrauWeisse, Bayreuther. Food: Forelle - excellent trout dish, and Jagershnitzle. Everyone was happy. We were comfortable in a crowded restaurant. All 7 of us plus baby snuggled around a bench table. Our waiter was prompt

Great German beer selection/ food is a nice bonus

By Anthony M |

One of my favorite places in Portland. If you like German beer, this is the place to go. They have a wide selection covering most of the types of German beer (weissen, rauchbier, Keller bier). Man cannot live by beer alone and the food is very authentic German. Recommend the Jagerschnitzel.

Yes please

By Pnwlove |

this place has super delicious food. If you like German food. The atmosphere of this place was amazing as well. The bartenders have great suggestions and they have really good, creative drinks. Bring your friends and enjoy what this place has to offer. It's nice because it's in a more residential area so parking is not a problem at all. The portions are perfect and the prices are fair.

Terrific German Food; Great German Beer; Wonderful people and atmosphere

By ka l |

Whether you are from out of town or a local, you cannot go wrong with a visit at Stammtisch. From the owners of Prost, Stammtisch provides another dimension where the flavors and choices of fare and drink will suit most anyone. The German dishes are scrumptuous and varied for small, middle and big appetites. There are 18 German beers on tap with some true hard to find gems. There are two cocktails on tap and authentic brandies of Williams and Kirschwasser. Most of all the service is friendly and welcoming. There is nothing like a crisp bubbly Helles, Jaegerschnitzel with Rotkraut and good company. Servus!!!!!

Birthday dinner

By 882shellym |

For my sons birthday we went here, growing up he always wanted toasted pork and spatzle a resturant where we lived. We had a wait which is ok however, we were ignored the whole evening. The pork was something I've never seen before, the spatzle was cold and hard. Not the best dinner for a 40th birthday

Great food and gemütlichkeit in spades!!

By Rick G |

First visit, Friday night, the place was packed. Shared a table in the true German style with two very nice young ladies. Wienerschnitzels were great; thin and crispy. Great red cabbage and hot German potato salad. And the spaetzle was to die for. Excellent list of German beers and several German wines as well. We're definitely going back. If we go back often enough will they give us our own Stammtisch? Now I know why this place was packed!!

Great German Food

This restaurant serves authentic German food. The service was fast and the food was very good. They also have a very good selection of German beers.

Bretzel, Ja!

By Rzen |

It was a dark and rainy night and we thought it was a good idea to try some German food. It took a minute to be greeted and we were told that we would have better luck sitting at the bar although we would've preferred a table. So we sat at the bar and looked over their extensive German beer list. I ordered a dunkel which was just alright... my taste in beer is more IRA or Amber Ale-esque so German beer isn't very exciting to me. We ordered the warm bavarian pretzel which was soft and hot with the prefect amount of salt. The house mustard was tasty with a good kick although the (cheese?) dip was our favorite. Our next plate was the pasta filled with leek fondue, topped with brussel sprouts and mushroom in white wine sauce. This was by far the best plate of the evening. The white wine sauce was absolutely delicious! Next, we ordered 2 sausages, one bratwurst and one knackwurst. I must've been spoiled with the previous dish because the sausages didn't taste so good to me. It might have been the texture combined with the slightly greasy taste that wasn't pleasing to me and I generally like bratwurst.

Great food and beer

By Chris M |

I've been to Stammtisch several times since it opened a few months ago and I highly recommend it. It's a casual place, but the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food and beer are excellent. Pretty much all the food I've had has been delicious. The pretzels are soft and tasty, but watch out for the schmaltz that comes with it (rendered fat, you might like it, but it's not for me). The jägerschnitzel with mushroom gravy is probably my favorite thing on the menu so far, as good or better than I've had in Germany. If you're not up for German food, they've got a really good burger you should try. The fries come with curry ketchup which is pretty amazing too. The beer prices are reasonable, especially when you consider the quality of the imports. For the most part you have a choice of .3, .5 or 1 liter sized beer, or for groups you can try the 2 liter boot! They also have a punch card so you can get some free stuff like a t-shirt once your first card is complete. 1 beer = 1 punch with 50 punches per card. And don't worry, you get 2 punches if you order a liter. The downside is that it's not a very big place, and it can fill up quickly in the evening or on weekends. Expect to sit next to strangers because they do their best to fill up the tables. They do the same thing in Germany, and it's actually a lot of fun and a great way to meet people. They do have some outside seating too, and those tables are a smaller, so if you need your privacy you might want to take one of those. If you're looking for a good place to watch sports, this really isn't the place. During World Cup games they put in an extra TV in the back area, but normally they just have one above the bar, and you can't really hear the sound. Also, they normally don't open until 3 pm, so if you absolutely must have a German beer at noon you'll have to look somewhere else.

Wow - the food, the taste. Hope you like German

By Gary C |

You do not need table cloths for a great meal. You can drink German beer with a great meal. You can sit on a stool for a great meal. We had the typical - Weiner schnitzel , jaeger schnitzel, sauerbraten, and trout. The taste was the best we have had for German food in the Americas. The German pretzel was very good, but a little pricey.

Great German Food

By LOMike |

The German beer choices are extensive and the Weinerschnitzel is very good. The German pretzel is served with nice mustard and a soft cheese. The hot potato salad is authentic. Sevice was a little slow, but the place was packed.

Tolles Essen

Went for my birthday. There were 6 of us at 2pm on a Sunday. We got seated right away. I lived in Germany for 8.5 years, so I know my German food. The food, beer and wine was excellent! The wait staff stayed on top of it. We had a great time! We will be back! Thank you Stammtisch for making my birthday Wunderbar!

Great food

By Jennifer E |

So glad we stopped for dinner on my last night in town. Two of us had the Jagersnitzel, yum! The burger on a pretzel bun looked really good too. Will definitely be back next time I am in Portland.

New German gem in Portland

By GuinnessWashington |

Recently opened, this place is fabulous. Real, homemade German food, including the wurst. The "Bretzel" is a great start. The portions are enormous and the draft beer selection runs an entire page. Best I've ever seen in the US. Nicest waitress in a city known for its waitstaff.

Great German food with great service!

I went with my family to dinner, and we are all German. The best German food we have ever eaten. The service was excellent, and super friendly. I would drive the three and a half hours it takes to get here, just to eat their food again. 🤤🤤

Authentic German experience

By Europetravels01 |

After living in Germany for 3 years and belonging to a Stammtisch while living there, I was pleased to find this restaurant in Portland. My husband and I were very impressed with our meals. I ordered the Jaugerschnitzel and my husband had his favorite, the Schweinhaxen. Both meals were great. Stammtisch offers an extensive German beer menu with beers poured correctly. We will definitely return here on our next trip to Portland.

Authentic German cuisine with a Portland twist.

By Ann W |

This restaurant encourages community seating so be prepared to share your table. They also do not take reservations, so get there early. The food was wonderful. We had jäger schnitzel, weiner schnitzel, and shared the fresh pretzel and potato pancake appetizer, and it was all terrific. However, one of us ordered a hamburger medium and it came out with a raw center, not so good. The house fries and the curry ketchup were a home run. They have an extensive selection of beer both bottled and on draft with many German selections. We will be back.

Great food!

By lesatho |

Dropped in for a bite since my husband had spent almost a decade in Germany and was eager to see what they had. Busy evening, but we got a nice cozy spot on the bar. The currywurst was amazing and they had such a neat variety of drinks available. The crystalwiesen I had was top-notch and our servers were so engaging and fun through our meal. If you like german food and drinks, definitely stop in!

Great authentic German Beer and food

By waterskinggina |

Great little community with a restaurant that was tucked away. Food was excellent, beer selection even better. My husband had the mussels and said they were the best he’s ever had. Service was great.

Great German experience!

By JordanT25 |

Wow! We really enjoyed the food. I ordered a Bretzel "warm Bavarian pretzel, house mustard, schmaltz & obatzda". Schweinshaxen "smoked and braised Pork shank with Spatzle and red cabbage". My wife had Rucola Salad "arugala salad with pear, goat cheese, walnuts, apple cidar mustard vinaigrette". Maultaschen "pasta filled with leek fondue, topped with brussel sprouts and mushrooms in white wine sauce". Paired with Hofbrau & Paulaner bier! Definitely will return.

Great German beers and food

By nitroused |

This is a small neighborhood restaurant dedicated to all things German. I went for the tap selection, but was pleasantly surprised by the authentic dishes. Tried the Schnitzel and brats, and it has to be the best German restaurant I have ever visited. If I lived here, I would have my personal barstool. Great service with knowledge of the tap selections, which are plentiful and varied. I will return.

Delicious

By Whoodlegirl |

My husband and I had dinner here and it was great! I had the Maultaschen and my husband had the Weinerschnitzel. His was very good and mine was superb. We had a good bottle of Austrian wine and got dessert we had apple strudel. This place is fun and has good food.

Authentic German food. When we couldn't get into a restaurant around the corner we found this gem. Ate outside and watched the bikers sweat as they rode by. Fun summer night.

Decent beer selection pub food

Really long list of German beers. The burgers and fries seem to be the best on the menu. Had Weißwurst which was more like a brat.

A Great Replacement

By Steve S |

Stammtisch has taken it's predecessor, Spints, to another level. This is a pub I could hang out in often. The food, in one word, is delicious. This place has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the incorporation of the side room now flows beautifully into the bar area. The staff is knowledgeable about their product and of course the bier is great. Go, check it out!

Went with Germans

My Oma is German I don't personally favor most real German food. I love Flammkuchen which isn't served here but oh well. I had a platter with cheese, pairs, grapes. I didn't really like it but my grandparents and mom thought theres was okay. My Gma was born and raised there. They did like the sauer kraut.

Fantastic Zum Essen and bier

By Tootietaka |

This was our first time to visit and definitely won’t be the last. The service and food were both outstanding. We had an assortment of the small, medium and large plate. The Kleine dish of Spargel Mit Bernaise ( asparagus, egg, bernaise) was so yummylicous. I now love 💕 asparagus even more. My Mittel dish of Maultashen ( pasta filled with leek fondue, topped with asparagus & mushrooms in white wine sauce) was so flavorful and paired well with my German riesling. Lastly, we had to have some Sauerbraten which was so authentic we could’ve been dining in Bavaria. German beer accompanied this dish quite well I must say. We will be back.

Real German Pub

By PortlandTravlin_man |

What a great new find in NE Portland, just a few blocks off Burnside. Lots of fantastic German beers on tap and the food is phenomenal. The Hasenpfeffer was out of this world, and the classic German Wienerschnitzel was prepared to perfection. The apple struddel for dessert is as real as it gets.

Fuer ein gutes Bier, komm hier!

By Barbara S |

We have been waiting for Stammtisch to open ever since Spints disappeared. This was our first day to try, and we were not disappointed. Owner Dan Hat has done a good job here! The atmosphere is lively and gemuetlich, and quite noisy from the voices of happy patrons. The Deutsche concept of Stammtisch is embraced here; all the larger tables bear a plaque stating "As in Germany please share your table with those you do not yet know. Prosit!" The bier selection was awesome, with 18 German Biers on tap (vom Fass) und 19 Biere aus der Flasche (bottled). All the draft selections we tried were fresh, at ideal temperature, and perfect carbonation / head. Most were available in steins of 0.3 l, 0.5 l, or a 1 l Mass. Many wines are available by the glass and four by the bottle. Several German spirits (Schnapps) are also available, including those not often seen in the US. The Williams was authentic, with the whole fruit in the bottle and the aroma and taste of fresh pears searing into the palate. The food was good. We tried the both the pork and vegetarian Maultaschen ("mouth pockets" - stuffed, ravioli-like pasta), and both were excellent. The pork Jaegerschnitzel were good, with a nice, mildly seasoned sauce with crimini mushrooms and sides of Rotkohl (red cabbage) and Spaetzle (German dumpling - noodles). The Rotkohl was tart rather than the sweet Bavarian style to which I am accustomed, but it was tasty. The Spaetzle were good, but sautéed in oil rather than butter - healthier, but not as tasty. Outdoor seating is coming soon. For now, they open up one side, so you are exposed to the outdoors. We WILL be back!

German food and beerbeer in urban neighborhood,

By VA B |

We were given a gift card to this German pub---but living out of town took us a while to get there....but was a pleasant surprise. A Monday night, it was very busy and seemed to be regulars we heard addressed by name. Big open doors let the inside feel open to the outside. We scored an outside sidewalk table on a very pleasant summer evening ...under a tree even though right next to parked cars. The food was very good...we had sauerbraten and a smoked pork shank....the pork was more like a good ham, Many beer choices, friendly wait help, though trying to cover too many customers. Look forward to going again.

German food!!

By Adrianator |

The pork shoulder was alright, a little bit too salty. Sausages were average - not much different than those from the grocery store. My favorite was the Maultaschen (a ravioli type dish). Overall, a nice chill little pub/restaurant with a German vibe in NE Portland. They also have a great selection of German beers.

Excellent German Experience!

By kader w |

My family is from Germany and every year we get together for Christmas and have a traditional German dinner. I have honestly never been to a restaurant that could even come close to my mother and grandmother's cooking but this restaurant was on point. The food was excellent, beer selection was great, and atmosphere was awesome. Didn't have a single thing that didn't bring me right back to those family meals. Have to say the only thing that was not as good as my grandmother's was the sauerkraut and only because my grandmother has a secret recipe for that! If you want traditional German food and great brews you need to come here! I will be back!

Freinds recommended this place as an authentic German place with the ambiance. It was. Good selection of brews, and not like other German places - the beer was fresh (ie not stale) - good sign. Food was good and reasonably priced. We got there early, so seating was wide open. If you're not into or ready for communal tables - then this isn't your place. We'd come back for sure

Real authentic German fare...Delicious!

This restaurant has a delicious german menu. The pretzels are warm and hand made with stone mustard. The 3 different kind of brats with warm sauerkraut. Warm German potato salad, red cabbage salad. I had a charcuterie board, with 2 kinds of pate, 3 cheeses & meat, pickles, bread, radishes, actually enough for the whole 4 of us. 2nd visit here and we will be back.

Best German Restaurant in Town!

I guess today was day 2 of being open for business! I'm German was having flashbacks of home, it's that good. I had hasenpfeffer which is hard to find in the states, or at least in the NW. It was perfection. My husband had the schweinhaxen (ham hock) and it fell off the bone and was also cooked perfectly. The Spätzle, as all the food is, was homemade and probably the best I've had outside Germany. The rot kohl (red cabbage) was just as well made and delicious. The kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) were also delicious and were garnished with outstanding homemade apfelmousse (apple sauce). The beer--well, all varieties of German served in the proper glass at the proper temperature. Were were delighted to find real schnapps (have the apfelkorn--delish!). Stammtisch has now become our go-to German restaurant in Portland (sorry Otto and Anita's) and it is a drive since we live about 30 miles out of town. But it was worth every inch of the drive. Seeing as I pigged out and ate one potato pancake, and entire hasenpfeffer, some of my hubby's ham hock, and drank a liter of beer and two schnapps, I think this German Frau can give Stammtisch the five-stars it has earned! Well done.

Excellent menu options

We went here as a family of 5 and had to wait for awhile to be seated. This is a popular, neighborhoody kind of place and it was lively and loud. There were tables and benches outside, and since it was a mile night, we waited there and they brought us our drink order. We were seated within the 35 minute window they gave us . The menu is great. It is broken down by size--small, medium, and large taking the place of appetizers, smaller meals and full entrees. We ordered several apps--the potato pancakes and the pretzel which was so good we ordered another. I had a medium dish--the lentil soup with sausage. My husband had clams. My son had the pork shoulder which was immense and my daughter in law had maltauschen. Grandson had weinerschnitzel, which could dhave (and did) feed a family of four--as we all had pieces of it. Everything was delicious, and there was food to take home as the portions are huge. There is a full bar and a terrific selection of German beers. The ambience is loud and energetic. It is in a neighborhood, so parking is difficult. I think they may only take reservations for large groups, but despite these two drawbacks, it is worth the visit. We'd all go back again.

Loved it!

Our family ate here our last night in Portland. We stayed downtown so it was the only restaurant we had to drive to during our stay in Portland, but it was well worth it. My husband loves German food and beer and this place has a terrific selection of both. You have to have the pretzel for an appetizer!

Not real German, but if you like vinegar...

The beer is, but the food isn't. First turn off is when they call a pork schnitzel a Wienerschnitzel, plus they deepfry it, bad choice. I ordered the Maultaschen because I love Maultaschen but if you are like me and have had real Schwäbische Maultaschen before, you'll be just as disappointed as I was. They tasted like vinegar and were not good at all. We also had the potato pancakes and the so called German potato salad. The salad was not a salad, it was actually Bratkartoffeln (pan fried potatoes) with vinegar, tasted ok but it was not potato salad. The potato pancakes were super tiny and super salty but in general the pancakes were ok, but way overpriced. My wife had the Jägerschnitzel and it was ok but again, the Rotkraut (red cabbage) was too vinegary and the schnitzel was flat and not a pork chop. My friend had the Schweinshaxe which tasted excellent except the red cabbage again. Spätzle are good but not home-made. Because my Maultaschen were SO disappointing I was offered something else and I opted for the Currywurst with fries. The Currywurst was good, they used a Weisswurst with store bought curry ketchup, just like you would get at a German street vendor for 3.50 Euro. Conclusion of this desaster, come for the beer and a pretzel and skip the main food. Nothing to screw up with the beer.

We will return

This is a German restaurant, so there's not much without meat besides side dishes. Four of us tried 1 pork shank, 2 schnitzel, and 1 duck sausage. Each was delicious, comfort food. The meats were perfectly prepared. The spaetzle were fresh, tasty and homemade-looking. The red cabbage did not have added spices, much to the delight of one of our group. Good beer selection. Friendly, knowledgeable server. Speedy service. The small place was busy on a Monday night, and the shared tables (like in Germany and Austria) make sense - why don't other places do that? It makes it feel like a neighborhood hangout.
