Worth the trip

By amymichelle |

We took a Lyft here from our hotel in downtown Chicago and it was worth the trip. In fact, it was the best meal we had in Chicago and we ate at some of the top places. We started with the pirogies which were the reason for our trip and then had the Vienna schnitzel as our main and two desserts—apple pie and blintzes. The blintzes stole the show. The pirogies were the least favorite of the night but still good. Service was excellent and if we had another night in Chicago I am sure we would have gone back! Definitely recommend.

tasty Polish food and great service

By Ruth Z |

We enjoy Polish fare and like to try new restaurants. This restaurant is highly rated so we gave it a try. The Polish platter has a taste of all the favorites--the sausage was particularly good, but the pierogis and stuffed cabbage were also very good. The Polish stew on potato pancakes was not particularly spicy but was very tasty and the meat was melt in your mouth tender. Servings were large; we had food to take home. Our waitress was very helpful and gave us the name of a local market since we wanted to take home some Kielbasa and other Polish specialties. We had no trouble parking on a Saturday early afternoon. The decor was very old European, comfortable and charming.

Must Try-Awesome!

By TANGO T |

Started off very reluctant. Arrived at 6:30 on a Friday night and the only two people inside were employees. We almost left, but the restaurant looks very nice inside and out, plus the reviews were very good so we trinity. SO GLAD WE DID! The service was good and the food was fantastic. I had the Polish Plate. It was a good sampling of Polish foods and the flavor a were delicious. Prices were also very reasonable. We will be back and highly recommend to all.

Good Ole Home-style Polish Cooking

By James W |

We drove 40 miles to get to this Polish restaurant & it was worth the drive! We both ordered the Polish Plate which included dumplings, stuffed cabbage, sausage with Pasztecik and sauerkraut. The portion size was very filling & the BEST home-style Polish food we've had in-a-long-time! Friendly service and nicely decorated. Parking can be a chore as there is street parking only & you need to pay the city for a spot on the street!

Very good Polish cuisine

By concurrent7 |

We were visiting Chicago and went hunting Polish food. Staropolksa had the best reviews so we tried it. It was unfortunate that there were three large parties in attendance at the time we arrived so it was extremely noisy and busy. The wait staff did their best to keep up but it was a struggle. We each ordered the Polish Plate ($9.99) which is more food than either of us could eat. The beet soup was good as well, with the meat dumplings. The kielbasa in the Polish Plate was very nicely smoked and tender, not rubbery or chewy. The pierogis are authentic, and the kraut is perfection. Parking can be iffy so get there early rather than later.

Great Polish Food at great prices

By Bill G |

I was doing some personal business in Chicago where I am moving and found this restaurant on TripAdvisor as the best in this section. It is! The wait staff is friendly and speaks Polish. The beat soup with meat dumplings is excellent. The pork medallions with mushrooms and cream sauce was delicious The broccoli was cooked perfectly. Mashed potatoes were not great. Wine list is fine although no polish wine. Polish beer that I recognized from my visits to Krakov. Price is very reasonable I will come back with my family.

Hidden Gem!

By Hapee1 |

FABULOUS EVERYTHING! Food couldn't have been more delicious; each dish was truly outstanding. Portions are generous yet presented beautifully. The service was spectacular, & the ambience of the private dining area in the rear of the restaurant was perfect for our group. The Polish beer was the best! (I forget the name, but ask the pretty blonde waitress with a slight Polish accent. It's her favorite.) All this, & the prices are VERY reasonable. Can't wait to return!

Party was a success!

By susiesnow |

At the suggestion of my son, I hosted a party of 30+ for a pre-wedding dinner for family and friends at this restaurant. The table was beautifully set with white tablecloths and napkins and large wispy branches, etc. - very charming. We had preselected three entrees to be served family style - chicken devolay, pork, and fish - which had been chosen for the non-meat eaters- rather than the customary sausage. A tasty mushroom soup, a Caesar salad and a cucumber with sour cream dressing preceded the entrees. Mashed potatoes and potato dumplings, as well as fresh string beans accompanied the entrees. The vegetarians were served plentiful plates of pierogies with vegetable stuffing. A crepe-type dessert filled with cheese or fruit completed the meal. Red & white wine bottles were on the table, and coffee, tea or beer and harder drinks from the bar in the main restaurant were other choices. I was thoroughly pleased with the food and service and atmosphere at Staropolska, and would recommend them to anyone wanting dinner for a group in Chicago.

Amazing authentic Polish food, awesome prices.

These aren't 'Mrs. T 's ' pierogi from your freezer case or hillshire farms kielbasa. This is the real deal. Incredible food, massive portions, friendly people. I will forever come here as part of my Chicago trips.

Outstanding! A neighborhood gem that serves up perfectly prepared Polish classics.

By Sandy |

You're spoiled for great restaurants when you visit Chicago. There's just so many excellent choices, so many famous restaurants, restaurants that were featured on "The Bear", etc. But if you focus too much on all the "buzzy" restaurants, you're going to miss some neighborhood gems that serve outstanding food on par with any more famous restaurants in Chicago. Starpolska is one such restaurant. It's a gorgeous Polish restaurant in the Avondale neighborhood where you can get a meal that can hold their own with any of Chicago's more buzzed-about establishments. They serve Polish classics like stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, Weiner schnitzel, beef stroganoff, pickled herring, keilbasa. They're not pushing any culinary boundaries, just executing the classics flawlessly. It feels like they've got a Polish babci in the kitchen, except chances are that even your grandmother can't cook this well. The restaurant space is cozy and inviting, and they can accommodate even the largest groups. Service is excellent. The portions are enormous, and the prices are shockingly reasonable. I would expect a meal of this quality to cost at least twice as much in or near the Loop. The Weiner schnitzel was the best I've ever had, as were the potato pancakes. I highly recommend this restaurant. Even in a foodie town like Chicago, Starpolska is a standout.

Nothing to brag about

By Pedro C |

This place is a favorite of our friends. Ownership has changed and so has the menu. The food was average. Service was poor with only one server/bar tender to take care of entire restaurant. I don't need to return.

Big portions, great taste

By Charles G |

Two of us came here on a Monday afternoon. Parking was easy to find on the street, I put a buck in the meter. Service was quick, we were seated and given menus in no time. There is a room next to the main dining room that looks like it is for private events. Check it out, it's impressive. Whatever you order, it will be delicious, authentic, and ample. Get an extra order of Pierogies, even if it's to go. You'll want them later. I also had the dumpling soup which I really liked.

Rather average Polish food

By Ron |

Compared to good restaurants in Poland and the best Polish restaurants in NA this place was rather average. Bigos, pierogi, rosol, galabki were all not as good as my wife’s, and not as good as Sawa’s Old Warsaw.

Good Polish food

By k_godlewska |

Taste like home made food. I ate Polish plate. The cutlet was huge and taste very good. Poor bartender was working on bar and serving food for the rest of the restaurant. I feel so sorry for her.

Good Food and Fun Atmosphere

By EilselFL |

Better be hungry when you come here! The atmosphere is like an old tavern with interesting items hanging on the walls and above. We went for lunch on a Sunday and I felt sorry for our waitress, as she was the only one waiting on everyone, but she was fantastic. Appetizers ordered were good: Potato Pancakes with applesauce on the side, and Zucchini Pancakes with goat cheese sprinkled on top. For lunch, the Vegetarian Plate got high marks, with cabbage stuffed with mushrooms, pierogies with spinach and potato and cheese, zucchini pancakes with goat cheese, potato dumplings, and broccoli. The Meat Pierogies were given a thumbs up as was the Hungarian Style Potato Pancake - two potato pancakes with beef stew and peppers in between. My Sausage with Sauerkraut was good, but the potatoes were rather tasteless, so I mixed them with the sauerkraut and sausage. Just a note, this is not the sauerkraut you may be used to putting on a hot dog. I think it is more along the lines of Kapusta, but it was very good. Good Polish dining with large portions and good beer in a comfortable neighborhood tavern.

Yum, yum, yum

By sharrongeg |

Ordered pierogis for pick up. Sweet cheese (I think there were 10 pieces) was $13 while regular cheese/potato were $12. Opened container in car and we couldn’t help ourselves from eating about half of them immediately. Absolutely delicious.

WOW

By Emmamme |

We just returned from this place with a huge doggie-bag! The food was plentiful and sooooo tasty! My husband had the Polish Plate (great if you're new to Polish food) and I had the Stuffed Pork Chops which was not at all what I imagined but tasted better! The price was great, food delicious, Service by Sylwia was amazingly organised, friendly and energetic (she was on her own out front on this off-peak night, but not one guest seemed forgotten or left waiting). Considering the plate of delicious food in front of me, my surprise of the evening was the beetroot.... mixed with a little horseradish it was to die for!!!

Quick visit

It wasn't anything special, but it was alright. I probably should have had what everyone else seems to have had here. The pictures show the meat that really needed a sauce.

Best Polish restaurant in Chicago

By Taylor B |

My wife and I aren't Polish and we've never visited a Polish restaurant. Until now. I was curious because we were looking for the Chicago restaurants that served the best veal scallopini and Staropolska was listed among the top seven according to one survey. Veal scallopini at a Polish restaurant? We had to see for ourselves. Staropolska, located at 3030 West Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square, has a reputation as the best Polish restaurant in Chicago. It oozes with Central European country charm and serves traditional Polish food in a rustic, old-world setting...flaczki soup, old-world smoked sausage, Kabanosy sausage, pierogis. I was impressed with a menu that includes Vienna schnitzel, chicken breast, veal cutlet, beef stroganoff, white fish and Alaska wild salmon. We started with shrimp with seafood cocktail and potato pancakes with apple sauce and shared an appetizer plate with salami, prosciutto, cheese, pickles and olives and a Caesar salad. Then I discovered where the veal scallopini was at. The Special for Two includes two pancakes with Staropolski stew, thinly sliced veal scallopini, chicken breast with cranberry sauce, dumplings, stuffed mushrooms and four pierogis--meat, potato and cheese, strawberry and blueberry. Different, delicious and dazzling. For dessert, we shared blintzes with cheese and strawberry sauce. It wasn't the way we expected veal scallopini to be presented--certainly not as we experienced in the other restaurants on the list--but it was part of a truly memorable one-of-a-kind dish.

Delicious Polish Food!!!

Great Polish food and a great atmosphere! The portions are on the larger side, so make sure you're really hungry when you arrive.

Authentic Polish Food, spotless restaurant, Polish beer on tap

By Richard C |

My cousin was visiting Chicago from Manitoba, Canada and wanted to have Polish food for dinner. A quick search turned up Staropolska, so we went there. The location is convenient, and we found easy on-Milwaukee Avenue metered parking. We both had Polish beer from the tap…perfect. I had the Polish plate (at $9.99 a real value), which included pierogi, golumbki, sauerkraut, a potato pancake, a link of grilled Polish sausage, and another meat-pastry combination. Very tasty. My cousin had a chicken-sauce dish on rice, and a side plate of 10 pierogi. He liked all very much. The only disappointment he had was the borscht which was more a broth than the with-chunks-of-beets style we are accustomed to. I’ll visit again soon. This is a very good restaurant.

Excellent as Usual

By SctClv |

Every few years I find myself in Chicago, wanting great Eastern European food. Staropolska is the best in town. Very nice dining room with a comfortable Old World charm. Great Polish beer on tap, nice wine selection and full bar at low prices for Chicago. Pirogues, schnitzel, stuffed cabbage, home made marinaded salads outstanding. And there is a whole lot more to the menu. The service is friendly, gracious, warm and efficient. Sunday is packed with local Polish and Ukrainian families after church - that the best form of commendation.

Great place

By Steven O |

1st time I was here and I have to say this place is absolutely wonderful. The food is just like I used to get from my grandmother and aunts. The strawberry cheese blitzes were amazing. I will come back.

OK food but nothing special

By Dedgehog |

We were looking for the location on Belmont but it has closed. On a early Monday afternoon, the waitress eventually appeared from the back after we had got our own menus and seated ourselves. Only one other table was occupied. We both ordered the Polish platter, which was an assortment of dishes including pierogi and sausage, and was OK. We had fond memories of the original location but probably won't come back here.

Absolutely divine Polish cuisine

By grammabanana11 |

I was in Chicago with a bus tour and we had a lunch stop here, served family style. Considering the number of people, we had great service and the food was out of this world. We were able to try a lot of Polish favorites, including cucumber salad, potato pancakes, pierogi, mushroom soup, stuffed cabbages and kielbasa with a type of sauerkraut. We also had sour cream and applesauce. I didn't think that we would have room for dessert but we all were treated to nalesniki filled with sweet farmer's cheese. (My guess). Everything was cooked to perfection and everything was served in an elegant manner. I would totally love to go back to Chicago and try other things on their regular menu.

Solid quality but not blown away by the experience

By Sara O |

As a Pole living in the UK and visiting friends in Chicago I wanted to see what they Polish food is like here. The service was pleasant but a bit slow and the selection of food was traditional but not particularly exciting. Traditional polish quisine is more than dumplings and meats, which wasn’t reflected in the menu. Having said that, the food we did order- dumplings, golobki, potatoe pancakes and zurek were made really well. Nice decoration!

Best Hidden Treasure in Town

By nuzas |

I loved this place and I'm surprised more people have not found out about Staropolska INC. The food quality is smashing compared to the price; for three of us buying dinner, drinks, and desert it came to 43$ The waitresses there where extremely pleasant and absolutely gorgeous. I grew up hating cabbage and I was thoroughly impressed how fantastic the stuffed cabbage was. For those who don't know Polish food that well, I recommend the Polish Plate dinner because it provides a variety of Polish cuisine: potato pancakes, kielbasa, pierogis, stuffed cabbage and something else I wasn't sure of, but was nonetheless delightful. I've never been to Poland, but I've been to Europe six times and this restaurant provides the same high quality experience that you would receive in an authentic classic style European restaurant. Highly Highly recommended

Best Polish Food in Chicagoland.

By Janhuss |

This is my second review of the restaurant, we revisited it yesterday and it was even better than before. The service is great, the prices for food and beverages reasonable and the food is truly outstanding. We decided on the the Polish Platter for 2 and it was enough to feed 3 or 4. It starts with lovely salads (beet, cabbage and cucumber) each different and charming in their own way. The platter consisted of potato dumplings, pierogi, chicken Devolay (like a rolled Chicken Kiev), pork in an AMAZING lemon cream sauce and beef over great potato pancakes. Everything was amazingly fresh, perfectly prepared and promptly served. The Polish beer on tap was a splendid accompaniment. I have never had anything less than amazing here and the interior is beautifully done. If you can't get to Europe, try this place.

Amazing food, great service, nice to come back here.

By Darek R |

We were here long time ago, but finally found the reason to come back. Our friends from Atlanta wanted to check Polish Food restaurant. We got there around noon, which is lunch time, few tables were occupied, but we were set within 2 minutes, 7 of us. Nice service, beautiful Polish speaking waitress, and very clean restaurant, so we knew that we will be happy that we have chosen this place. Order process was fast, and we got pierogis, we want them to be boil and than fried a little, that was no problem. Than we ordered chicken stripes for kids, and Placek po Wegiersku(Hungarian style pancakes with goulash inside), chicken breaded cutlets with mushrooms on it. All came within 15 20 minutes, which means it was done from scrach not frozen or so. Worth a while to see this place, they serve alcohol, but since we had 3 kids with us, and little too early to get some adult drinks, we pass on that. I really recommend this place, because I am Polish, but also because you will get real taste of the eastern Europe food. This is one of the oldest Polish restaurant in the Chicago, and since we moveed out from the citi long time ago, it was very nice to come back and have very good food, and be happy that we could get there. 5☆☆☆☆☆

Substantially good food and portions

By Michael Z |

Polish restaurants in Chicago, especially around the Avondale neighborhood are common. StaroPolska on Milwaukee was uncommon. As a given, this cuisine tilts toward the heavy side and is quite filling; expect leftovers. My wife and I have friends of Polish descent and many experiences with them and this cuisine. The chef here does a excellent job of providing all the solid dishes from eastern Europe's kitchens. Quite a large menu including the usual suspects ....sausages, potato pancakes, and extra special light, airy, puffy round little dumplings - quite unique and delicious. Also featured are pork dishes, some Schnitzels and goulash. A few American items are offered. The walls are covered with very stunning murals. Quite unexpected excellent artistry you never see in mom and pop joints. Actually the whole rustic or eccentric decor was really attractive and appealing including the over head artifacts. Much nicer place than it need be. Beer and wine are popular, but they have a full bar. All the diners at tables received a serving of house pate and bread; dinners come with soup or salad.

Awesome authentic Polish restaurant

I came here with family for a wedding rehearsal dinner. The wait staff was very good and very friendly. The food was excellent and was authentically home made Polish food.

Excellent in Every Way

By NextStopIs |

In a culinary world dominated by international and fusion cuisines, Polish cooking may be easily overlooked, the food of an earlier wave of immigration that has long integrated into American culture and cuisine. We have known of this jewel of the old Polish neighborhood of Chicago since my son moved here several years ago, and we have been eager to go. Tonight we finally had our chance. Everything about our experience was better than we ever thought. We started off with a Polish beer, Lomza, on tap, on the rcommendation of our wonderful waitress. On her guidance, it was more of an amber than the lighter Pilsners that were available. It was a great choice, a rich flavor with a slight sweetness, a distinctive flavor among the many brews available these days. An appetizer of Small Sausages with Onions and Horseradish was more than a perfect accompaniment to the beer. They were the best Polish sausage I have ever had. A crisp snap to the skin and a meaty flavor burst in the center, without the greasiness that is so often a part of the sausage experience. Dinner came very quickly. The Stuffed Cabbage that my wife ordered was very good, and almost as good as the slightly sweeter version that my Polish/Jewish mother used to make. Hey, nothing beats Mom, especially when it is her signature dish. But this was darn close. It was served with a cabbage roll shaped serving of mashed potatoes (a bit uneventful next to all the other great flavors of the evening) and a delicious pickled salad of cabbage, broccoli and onions. My son ordered the Hungarian-Staropolska Style Potato Pancake, which was their delicious beef stew stuffed between two large potato pancakes. It was a great way to taste their potato pancakes, and combine that with the rich, saucy stew. What a great combo, and as the waitress said, "enough to share". Choosing between the Pork Tenderloin and the Veal Meatballs with Creamy Mushroom Sauce, I wisely took our waitress' advice and ordered the meatballs. They were served with a lovely row of Potato Dumplings and a surprisingly tasty medley of steamed veggies. The cream sauce was excellent, a base to touch every bite, rather than gratuitously poured over everything. The mushroom gave it a characteristic smoky flavor. The Veal Meatballs were meaty and hearty, while the dumplings carried the flavor of the sauce. Every dish was beautifully prepared and presented. There was no hint of excess oil that sometimes passes for Eastern European cooking. The flavors were rich and uncomplicated. Every morsel was a treat. The menu had so much variety and authenticity, from the pickled herring to the many varieties of Pierogis, to the selection of entrees, sides, soups and blintzes for dessert. The wait staff was gracious and welcoming. A total WOW experience. We will definitely be back.

Good.

The food is very fresh, good, and authentic. My husband and I enjoyed our food. I had the pierogies, my husband has the potato pancake with beef goulash. We both loved the food.

High quality Polish Food

By Michele K |

High quality, authentic Polish food. Gave 4 stars because my stuffed cabbage was very tasty, but thought the cabbage was very thin... wanted more for the dish. Mashed potatoes were wonderful, and sauce for the cabbage roll. BF said his veal dinner was very tasty. Homemade pierogies were awesome! Everything else was delicious. Great service and loved the restaurant ambiance. Worth the trek over from downtown.

Wow! Tremendous food, good value

By MNknow |

Party of three trying Polish food for the first time. Staff was friendly and very Polish. Enjoyed the Polish television. Place looks new but it seemed to be occupied with long term customers. Anyways, the food. We had the Polish plate, beef stew and potato pancakes, and Kielbasa and fries for the picky eater. Entree prices $8 - $10 and the plates were a good size. Too full for dessert. The potato pancakes were light - not soggy or greasy. The pierogi were tender and tasty. The exteme picky eater was ready to poach them all which is a tremendous endorsement. Kielbasa had a nice texture, smoky taste. Stuffed cabbage (what was that?) was a pleasant taste. One of us liked the Polish beer. All in all the food is worth a second trip and it's on my list for a repeat. I would try the Polish plate as first time visitors. I'm trying a bowl of pierogi next time.

Great food!

We had the familiy platter which i can highly recommend!everything was really tasty and the price is as well really nice:)

Cozy, authentic, great service

By stefamily |

Went for lunch on a Sunday and were really happy with the food and the service. I was happy that I ordered The Polish Plate so I could taste a variety. I'd love to come back with a group and sit at the cozy VIP table by the fireplace. Great value for the quality of food you get. Just don't order a bloody mary (yuck). Beer-GOOD.

So happy to see it 10 years later!

By Do Mora De Explora |

It’s been about 10 years since we were last in Chicago, which means about 10 years since we last visited Starapolska. And it’s still going long and strong, with excellent dinner and beer options, great service, and great atmosphere. We tried a little of everything (they offer family-style sampler plates) and are big fans of the stuffed cabbage. Note: folks staying downtown can get there by train (Belmont) and about a 15 minute hike to through a great little neighborhood. Highly recommended!

On a whim

By orangesassycat |

We stopped here for lunch after I'd been missing my grandmother's cooking. It hit the spot. Stuffed cabbage was my favorite, along with cheese and potato pierogies. We will be back with the whole family

Amazing authentic Polish cuisine!

By Dorene M |

Staropolka is worth a visit if you love Polish food. Or, if you want to try Polish food, this is the real deal. Upon entering, you'll be greeted with "Dzien dobry!", but don't worry, all of the wait staff speak English as well. The restaurant has an old world rustic feel. The menu has all of the usual Polish favorites: pierogi, stuffed cabbage, breaded cutlets, soups, beets, potato pancakes and more. Everything arrives quickly and steaming hot. The servers always attend to guests politely and promptly. Prices are reasonable, and the location can be found via public transportation, driving or Uber/taxi.

THE Polish restaurant

By crashdavis565 |

THE Polish place in Chicago and as we were driving through the town we had to stop. The menu was extensive and all the expected dishes were there, we as a bigger family got them all. Food came out fast and was excellent without a hiccup ( some not meeting particular tastes but all seemingly fresh and prepared excellent) The service was disappointing, the restaurant was empty and the wait staff congregated in the back and talked amongst themselves. Needs were met but you had to wait for a pause in the conversation and hopefully, catch an eye. Bread was boringly bad, even great butter couldn’t save it. I would go back but they can defy do a little better and I expect they will.

Stuffed but happy

By DebCSW |

Wonderful dinner. Potato pancakes, veal meatballs and polish beer. Delicious vegetables and cucumber sauce. Service was pleasant and helpful. Ample portions resulted in leftovers to take home.

Absolutely perfect homemade style meals with charming ambience and very reasonable prices.

By Janhuss |

Note: that this review if for the Staropolska on Milwaukee Avenue not on Belmont. First and foremost, the food is elegant, delicious, and well prepared. Nothing was greasy or salty, it was perfect. If your idea of Polish food is derived from the usual Chicago "Eat till you puke" Polish Buffets (which are charming in their own kitschy "Homer Simpson" way) then you are in for a true epiphany at Staropolska. The food and interior reminds me of some of the higher class places we have visited in small towns in the Czech Republic (sorry, I haven't been to Poland yet). The veal cutlet was hand-breaded in house and fried to perfection. The pork tenderloin medallions with mushroom cream sauce was as elegant and as tasty as the best French restaurant. The potato pancakes were delicious and not at all greasy. I appreciated the reasonably priced Okocim beer on draft (and available in smaller 0.33 L glasses). The meals we all under $10 each! All this with friendly service in an authentic Polish neighborhood full of great sausage shops and delis where English is seldom heard! I will never go back to a Polish Buffet after this place! You get more than you can eat of top quality food for the same price! This place is a Chicago treasure!

Got my Polish fix!

By Katy6190 |

Being of Polish decent I was interested in trying some Polish food on our recent trip to Chicago. We arrived late, around 9:30, and they were already cleaning up so we decided we’d just order our food to go so as to not hold up the staff. We tried the potato and cheese pierogi, sauerkraut pierogi, golabki (stuffed cabbage with meat), and potato pancake. The potato and cheese pierogi were average, but the sauerkraut were great. The golabki were delicious - I want to know how they make the sauce because it was amazing! The potato pancakes were solid as well. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend this place if you’re in the mood for a good Polish feast!

Everything was delicious

By Stephen H |

After a weekend of upscale Michelin dining, we wanted to end on more of a local fare. This place hits it. Coming from Atlanta, you just don't have a lot of Polish options and my gf being Polish is always looking for "home-cooking" if you will. Well it absolutely delivers. We had a $60 lunch, but it was a MASSIVE lunch. We ordered pierogis, strogonoff, a melted brie dish and things I can't even remember. It's rustic, comfortable and absolutely delicious. The best latkes I've ever eaten!

Like eating in Krakow, Poland

By Gene P |

Best Polish food I have had since I was in Poland! Stepping into the restaurant reminded me of the places I have been to in Krakow, Poland. The food was authentic and actually better than my Grandma used to make. The kapusta was the best I have ever had. What made the evening even more authentic was the beauty of the wait staff. Efficient, caring and attentive even though very busy, they filled our every need. Don't leave without having some pierogi! I will definetely go out of my way to eat here again the next time I am in Chicago.

Sunday Brunch Polish Style

By 103maryannr |

We 2 arrived soon after restaurant opened on a Sunday morning for brunch. Only one other (large) table was being served at that time. We have been eating home-made polish food for more than 40 years and were looking forward to this meal. We both had Potato Pancakes appetizers, the polish plate entree ( pierogi, stuffed cabbage, sausage with pasztecik, sauerkraut) and were not disappointed. Service was excellent and accommodating (I traded in my stuffed cabbage for extra pierogies). As we finished our meal, we could see that the restaurant was about to fill-up with 2 large parties of about 70 people. Not sure if that is a common Sunday occurrence.

Still dreaming about it

By Clark R |

The food here was delicious. I was visiting a friend in Chicago who is from Poland and she wanted me to experience some authentic Polish cuisine. We found this place. I was not disappointed and neither was she. I ordered the Polish plate with potato pancakes, pierogies, kielbasa, sauerkraut, and stuffed cabbage. It was sooo good. If I lived in Chicago, I would be here often.

Great Christmas Luncheon

By Bonnie T |

We had a family luncheon at Staropolska for Christmas, and it was excellent. The food was authentic Polish dishes, the servings were tasty and large enough to bring home leftovers, and the ambiance in the restaurant was quite nice. We will return.

Wonderful flavors

By lostagainkc |

We were looking for something different for dinner on our last trip to Chicago and came across Staropolska's. We tried the sampler plate and thoroughly enjoyed it. Each item was full of flavor and delicious and the portions were generous. Plain and simply a great place to eat and would not hesitate to recommend to anyone. Service was very good and friendly and the décor was very nice as well.

Taste of Poland

By Lisa W |

Amazing food, service and ambience. My family had a variety of dishes and shared. Literally everything was delicious from the pierogis, beets, schnitzel, potato dumplings, kraut, salmon, even the carrot cake. My son lives in Chicago and stated that the neighborhood where Staropolska is, was a very large Polish community back in the day, but sadly is diminishing. I highly recommend.

Very good!

By Siouxhockeyfan |

We took a long Uber ride from downtown Chicago for an authentic Polish meal. This restaurant did not disappoint! We had the periogis as an appetizer and finished with stuffed cabbage, potato dumplings, creamed cucumbers and chicken devolay. Delicious. Our server (Sylwia) was very efficient and sweet and she made our experience even better. We also liked the old world charm in the decor.

Great inexpensive polish food 😌👍

By Simon D |

The first impression looked like it was a bar, not a restaurant. But then when nice looking polish girl came to take our order we were fine! The dishes were really big, yes it's a good place to go get a polish beer "Zywiec", and relax. We will come back :-).

Wonderful neighborhood restaurant

By Lalyc |

Went here with two friends who have never eaten Polish food before. Wonderful food and friendly service. I had the vegetarian plate and my friends had the meal for two. Both menu items had a good variety of items - pierogies, cabbage rolls, etc. the food was delicious and plentiful. Would definitely recommend!

Really good,

By Robert M |

Love this place, been coming here for years when they were on Belmont. Since the move to north Milwaukee ave, the food has gotten better and better in appearance. The potato pancake with goulash is a must, the spinach pierogis ate a definite!!

Just what we were looking for

By Kbecjeans⛺ |

We wanted something close to Logan Square that was not something we could get at home. This was perfect. It was an easy bus ride from our lodging. The neighborhood was gritty, but we were not uncomfortable on a late night visit. My husband enjoyed the traditional kielbasa and sauerkraut and I took the polish plate. The price was reasonable, the atmosphere relaxed and enjoyable, the food delicious- loved the pancakes, the pierogies, the kielbasa, it was all good. I definitely recommend a visit, and wish we could go back and try some of the other menu items.

We had pierogoi’s, Beef Stroganoff, Starpolska Hungarian potato pancakes with beef stew, and orange chicken. They where heavenly, and the atmosphere is cool and old worldly. We had enough for leftovers which I love.

Still fantastic food and atmosphere! Great service, too!

We were just passing through Chicago coming home after a long trip to New England, and remembered how much we loved this place (it reminds us of how we also loved Poland ). A quick hop off of I-90 and we were there! Our server was friendly and helpful, and the food was everything we'd hoped for...in fact, I rate it the best of 2 weeks of meals throughout the New England and New York region. Get the dinner platter for 2 so you can try a wide variety, and a pilsner from Poland to chase it down. Cheers!

Worth the trip!

Had a wonderful meal with a wonderfully charming waitress! Everyone in our party of 4 had a different entree and all were delicious! Don't believe you can go wrong at this authentic Polish restaurant! Charming eclectic decor as well.

Not only met, but exceeded all of our expectations.

Staropolska 3030 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL 60618 (773) 342-0779 We looked over the menu and everything looked fantastic. We decided to order the family dinner for 4 because we would get a variety of dishes to sample. Everything there has an amazing taste and there was so much food, we were only slightly chagrinned when the waitress suggested that we move to a larger table because of the amount of food we ordered would not fit on a regular 4 top. Family Dinner for four at $17.99each Potato Pancakes - with apple sauce and sour cream (perfectly crisp) Bread was fantastic, slightly warm with warm butter. Soup Of Your Choice – The Mushroom soup was very strong and flavorful, and the Borscht was unbelievably good. Assorted Salads – bowl of Sliced beets, and a bowl of cucumbers, Ceasar Salad – with a very nice dressing. Breaded chicken breast, stuffed with parsley and cheese butter was perfect. Sausage - with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes was truly delightful. Beef Stroganoff – was amazing Mixed Pierogi – was tender and flavorful, some sweet, some spicy. Sweet cheese Blintzes – Was a perfect ending to a perfect dinner. Nice location and atmosphere. An excellent meal, friendly service, huge portions and reasonably priced This meal actually not only met but exceeded all of our expectations

Mediocre Polish food

By Sunny77777 |

I was craving some good pierogis so we headed here after some restaurant searching online and seeing past good reviews. The food is mediocre at best. Overall very bland. I know that Polish food isn’t known for spice or anything. But this was nowhere near the flavor of the pierogis or other foods that I grew up with. The worst thing is that they closed the kitchen without offering us last orders or even dessert. I had my heart set on apple pie, but no luck there. There were only two tables seated, I don’t know why they couldn’t have asked us if we needed anything before shutting down. Unforgivable for a restaurant in my opinion. Won’t be back.

Sumptuous food great variety creative polish cooking

This review is about two separate visits that I made here within two weeks of each other both visits featuring rich, homemade and filling Polish cuisine. I originally found this restaurant 2 weeks ago by accident so I went in initially seeking a lunch and was encouraged to try the vegetarian platter and a small side of juicy Polish sausage. The platter consisted of pierogies, potato dumplings, brocolli, zucchini pancakes with goat cheese, and cabbage filled with rice. I had plenty leftover for a second meal because the portions here are generous and filling. During my second visit here I shared a platter for two with a friend and we both decided to start out with cups of hot borscht soup and bread with pate. The meal for two was polish sausage, beef stew, pierogies, potato dumplings, pork, bacon wrapped appetizers, potato pancakes and grilled vegetables. There was so much food left that we each had a box for each of us to separately take home for at least one more dinner. This is the type of cozy restaurant where you can choose a booth either alone or with a friend and you are never rushed through your meal. There are so many different plates both meat dishes and vegetarian based to choose from so you will never grow bored. I'm planning another visit soon because I love traditional Polish food that is prepared with love. Believe me you can taste the love in every bite.

Charming and Delicious

Delicious Authentic Polish Food - Worth the Drive

By Mary Jo K |

This is one of my favorite Polish restaurants in Chicago. It is a cute restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. I can highly recommend all of the following dishes: Grilled Hoki (type of fish), Duck Breasts in Plum Sauce, Mushroom Soup, Red Beet Soup with Mushroom Dumplings. Be sure to enjoy one of the great Polish beers on tap. My favorite is Zywiec. I am not very fond of american beer but LOVE this polish beer. Paid street parking is readily available. I love Chicago because it has so much great ethnic food. Entrees at lunch run $17 to $23 - in any other restaurant these would have cost quite a bit more.

A Trip to Poland in Chicago

Spectacular experience. I came here with a friend for her birthday. It was a Tuesday night and we were the only people there. Our server, Anna, was very attentive and kind. My friend is gluten free and although most polish dishes historically are breaded, Anna gave my friend quite a few ways they can change the dishes to accommodate her need. The food was delicious. I loved Bacon and Plums. If you never tried it, you are missing out. I also had a mix of strawberry and sweet cheese pierogi, which were amazing. The vibe here is great and they have really nice decor. Walking in, you feel like you are in Poland. The artwork and design are carefully selected by the owner Barbara. She is kind and attentive. She also cooks herself and prepared my friends and mine meal that Tuesday night. My friend also got a chocolate cake on the house for her birthday. Thank you Barbara for creating such a wonderful restaurant and Anna for going above and beyond to serve us. Looking forward to visiting again! Thank you!

We're Not Polish, but Great Food!

Our daughter lives near Logan Square and discovered this wonderful gem of a Polish restaurant nearby -- so when we visited for my mom's birthday, we wanted an authentic ethnic cuisine for "adventure eating". Although my great grandmother had Polish roots, German cuisine was more known to us, so the Staropolska was our adventure eating -- and it was excellent. Price and variety were very good and the Polish waitress was very attentive and helpful with pronouncing the names. Tasty, well-prepared food and a clean and very Eastern Euro looking restaurant. Perfect for us! I believe you will enjoy the food. Something for everyone.

Pieroguis were to die for, potatoes were my favorites!!!!

Good Service and Polish Food

I was with my three sisters and (being Polish) we decided to try this place for dinner on a Sunday. We arrived and were immediately greeted and seated in a booth. The service was very pleasant. Our waitress came by often, but not too much to be annoying. She was very kind and answered our questions as needed, and was patient when we couldn't be decisive. We started with just water, but two of us ended up ordering the Polish Martini. It had a unique taste and I would suggest to try if you want something different. We ordered a lot of food which included: Beetroot soup, Mushroom soup (both traditional Polish soups), an arugula salad (really good), a fish meal that had dumplings and broccoli (sorry don't know what exact dish), the Polish plate (a mix of several polish items (potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, and sausage), Rice & Mushroom cabbage rolls, and a plate of Sauerkraut & mushroom Pierogi. We tasted from all dishes and everyone loved everything that came to the table. A box was needed to take home leftovers. For dessert, to celebrate a birthday, we had a couple pieces of kremowka, a Polish pudding cake. There were no leftovers of cake. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and left full and happy.

Traditional Polish meals, outstanding service!

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this restaurant is temporarily closed. They offer UberEats delivery and pickup. After a great meal, delivered by UberEats, I decided to pickup some food there. Zurek soup is very tasty! If you want a generous portion, try the Polish plate with sausage, stuffed cabbage and Pieroggi (Polish dumplings). Duck breast with plum sauce was delicious! I suggest trying their mouth-watering desserts like apple pie or cheesecake. Extremely friendly and guest oriented service. I will definitely come back and highly recommend it!

I Expected Better

My basis of comparison is home cooking and Detroit area Polish restaurants. We all had the family dinner which was a good value. The beef stew and sausage were excellent. The soups, all that we tried, were not very good. Why can't Polish restaurants prepare a good kapusta? Potatoes were cold. Pierogies were boiled...not my favorite prep. Service was excellent. Drinks were a bit pricey. I'd like to try other Polish restaurants before returning.

Staro Delicious Polska

If you appreciate eastern European dishes and Polish specifically, then this is the place for it in Chicago. Great atmosphere, friendly service and reasonable price. I took a date for dinner and was asked to return. Try the barszcz czerwony (red bit sup)

Worth the visit

By Brittany B |

I have been wanting to try Polish cuisine for a while and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stop here when we were in town. Staff was friendly and attentive. My husband tried the sausage special and I got the vegetarian sample plate, which included spinach pierogis, zucchini pancakes, mushroom/rice cabbage rolls, potato dumplings, etc. Most of the items on my plate were delicious, especially the pierogis. I was very underwhelmed by the vegetarian cabbage rolls though; they were quite bland and in desperate need of some seasoning or sauce. Otherwise, it was a great experience; we will be back!

Very pleasant and Very delicious

Our first impression was basically left wondering if you seat yourself or wait to be seated... However, after that, it was all good. Very European. Quite impressive atmosphere. Friendly staff. Very good service, and quite excellent food....I mean.. Really Good Food! Started with a complementary chicken patte, and end with a very modest bill. Server was working like it was a totally pleasurable experience to wait on our table. I will be going back. It felt like going to Grandma's house for a feast. Super welcoming and made double sure that everything was to our liking. Highly recommend.
