as a local, I try to enjoy the variety of restaurants in Houston. Popped by State of Grace on a Monday night. Great feel....not overly stuffy....upscale elegant casual decor. You can sit at booths or tables in the main room. There are other rooms as well. Great service. Engaging staff who were appropriately attentive and helpful. Food....excellent. among us, we enjoyed the oysters, okra, steak tartare, gumbo, burger.....all were delicious. We splurged and had a decadent dessert...a type of deconstructed s'more. The homemade toasted marshmallows were fantastic. A bit on the pricey side but for good food, atmosphere and service, it's well worth it.

Kale Salad, Fried Rice, the hushpuppies, and the enchilada are all very good but none are main courses. I have never found the main courses to be all that special but I do like the items mentioned and the setting is quite nice. Service seems a bit to familiar but that is a matter of opinion on my part, I don't want to know my servers opinions unless I ask for them.

We met friends here for a mid-week dinner. Been wanting to try this "new" place for a couple of years, but hadn't made it happen till now. Thought we were coming for a Restaurant Week(s) meal, but realized that they didn't participate this year. (They do lots of other charitable work, so fair enough). Every part of the meal was wonderful! We came early enough to partake of the $1 oysters, during Happy Hour. Had a selcation of 4 kinds of Gulf oysters; delicious! The cocktail offerings were tasty and creative; bottle of Pinot was nice. We had an order of the hushpuppies, which everyone raves about. Those definitely should be tried. Never had a seafood-filled, powder sugar dusted, hushpuppy! For mains, we had the redfish, Mahi Mahi and the duck breast (leg, which can be cut away (fork tender) for tacos with radishes, cilantro and other greens). All were excellent!! For sides we added blistered shishitos and kim chi collard greens. To end our meal, we indulged by sharing a sweet cake slice with malted ice cream and a variation of a s'mores sundae. And, if you haven't had enough goodness, they offer diners a little ginger oatmeal sandwich cookie, when departing. Everything from the decor, food, and service is wonderful at State of Grace. Do come!

The service and food was excellent. The variety and presentation of food is impressive. The experience is worth the price. Be prepared for it to be loud because everyone is having fun.

Had the slow cooked ribs and cannot fault the Texan neauveu vibe of this place. Really enjoyed it on a Monday night. Service on point also. This is what I expect of upmarket Texan dining.

Timeless classic comfort dishes - amped up to the level of culinary greatness! This place seems like any other trendy, upscale, pricey place located near the town's presumptive elites, but delivers the good when it comes to taste and to portion. You can arrive hungry, but you'll leave with a doggy bag, looking forward to continuing the experience at home.

I was blown away by our celebration dinner at State of Grace. It was just about perfect from beginning to end. The service throughout the meal was attentive, helpful and excellent. What a great team. Three people clearing dishes and cleaning the table after each course. We started with twoi appetizers, the Corn and the Hush Puppies. Both were really good. I never had anything like the corn dish and the Crab Hush puppies were even enjoyed by our sons Fiance who doesn't like seafood. The food was original and delicious. The Pastas were beyond delicious. The waitress warned us that the Schnitzel, the Duck or the Beef were large enough to share and she was right. I had the Schnitzel which was cooked to perfection as was the Spaetzel that accompanied it.(took home enough for lunch) The Ravioli and the Scallop dish were delicious. We saved room for dessert and we were glad we did. I had an amazing sticky toffee pudding which was luscious and our table had two of the smoked chocolate sundaes. It was the perfect way to end a perfect evening. I made a great choice. Next time we are in Houston, we will return to try some the other fantastic looking offerings on the menu.

This is my second visit to State of Grace. I was not impressed with the food quality on my first visit but friends had given it positive reviews so I decided to give it another chance. The food is still horribly mediocre. Two strikes and you're out.

I am a serious foodie and was taken to this restaurant during a visit to Houston by friends who live there. I thought the menu was quite diversified with many interesting choices that made it difficult what to decide, so I ended up ordering multiple items. The food was well prepared, and was a well matched blend of local cuisines, and frankly almost worth the trip to Houston. The wine menu was also quite thoughtful with many interesting choices and options for well-matched varietals. I was most impressed, and hope to return there on my next trip back to Houston.

Went for a Sunday brunch and overall the table rated the experience “ok”. Not fabulous but “ok”. Three at the table got the Crawfish Benedict and all three said it was barely warm when served and the taste was just “ok”. It would seem for over $20 it would be better than a consensus “ok”. Another had the kale ceasar salad and kimchi greens which were given a hearty thumbs up. The other had the fried rice which was labeled good. Service was good. For the prices, expectations were a bit higher and unfulfilled.

I recently dined with business friends at State of Grace and had a great meal and a great experience. This is a new American kind of place with traditional dishes with a twist. We started with a mess of appetizers and there were all delicious from the oysters on down. The hush puppies are all they are rumored to be - delicious. I had the pork schnitzel, which you don’t see on a lot of menus and it was well prepared and tasty. Others had the fish and some had the pasta. All of it came out on point. There is clearly some skill and attention to detail in the kitchen. Perhaps that’s why the joint was jumping. The decor is rustic and rough hewn and fit the linear but homey style. The servers and hostesses were good. The wine list was interesting and varied. They had some bottles on the list that they didn’t have in stock, but the alternative we selected was great (although they only had one bottle of that!). Might need to work the inventory levels for Wine. Or shrink the list. Overall, a coo hip crowd and a wonderful experience. I’d go back and so should you

Foodie alert! State of Grace is the real deal. Creative menu, superbly prepared and presented, with great wait-staff, and a vibrant ambience. My wife and I took a college-aged nephew and friend here in May 2017. Everything, but everything, was over-the-top great. Appetizers were grilled octopus (I'm still dreaming about it), beef carpaccio, and street corn ravioli (outrageously good -- maybe the surprise of the night). My roasted redfish 'on the half shell' was fabulous, as was my wife's scallops. Maybe another surprise was how good the side of 'fried' Basmati rice was (helped along by smoked redfish, curry, peanuts, and egg). Next time we're back in Houston, we're definitely back to State of Grace!

Met a few old friends for our annual holiday get together. Hadn’t been here before in spite of hearing great things about it. Was underwhelmed with the doughy sweet crab hushpuppies with honey butter that were closer to undercooked beignets than hush puppies. The schnitzel and spaetzel on the other hand was terrific. Others had the beef rib for two with fries with Bernaise and the snapper on the half shell which were also fantastic.

Just came back from lunch. I have been wanting to try this restaurant since it first opened. The marble bar is huge.Looks like a great place for happy hour. Lunch was very good. Try the gumbo. Also had the chicken salad. It was delicious. Good service. The free cookie at the end of lunch was a real treat. I will definitely go back !!!

For a reasonable fixed price, you get a four course meal served family style. You make a meat selection and three sides. Only the meat and dessert is served on individual plates. We were impressed by the sides. None of them were routine but each had an enhanced character. The brussels sprouts were amazing. We got a second serving for no additional cost. The service was fast and professional. The decor was interesting and modern. One downside is that you are forced into valet parking as there are no other spaces for patrons.

State of Grace is a delightful gem that redefines modern American cuisine with a creative twist. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between casual and upscale, making it an ideal spot for both intimate dinners and celebratory gatherings. The menu showcases a fantastic variety of dishes that highlight fresh, local ingredients, and the chef’s innovative approach brings exciting flavors to classic favorites.

Every time I’ve tried to make a reservation they seem to be full. Finally got in and will make an effort to book far enough in advance in the future to return. This is a place to come with a group and try everything. We had a wonderful meal – hush puppies as advertised are great although they are dusted with powdered sugar which was a bit odd for an appetizer. The duck is to die for even my wife who doesn’t like Duck raved about it. All the prices are a bit high the overall ambience is fairly casual. The bar scene is pretty active. The wine list is a varied many high priced domestic and imported but pretty good selection by the glass. The people around us had oysters and the red fish and were pleased

Attended a birthday lunch here. Have only been here prior for drinks. The food was very good and the waiter was amazing. He was fluent with the menu, offering suggestions, but most importantly, he had a lot of patience!! He even split the bill for us, which was nice. I highly recommend coming here and I will be back.

Walking into State of Grace, you are met by a really cool dining space. The long bar is perfect for grabbing a drink. The service was excellent. Our server was very knowledgeable, helpful, and prompt. The food did not disappoint. The menu is loaded with items that sound delicious so paring down what to choose is a challenge. As we exited, we received an icing filled gingersnap cookie sandwich. An awesome experience.

I ran into their WEB site when researching dining in Houston and it grabbed my attention instantaneously: it was elegant, eclectic and enthusiastic. It promised return to times old and gentle, times few remember, return to peace and grace. Make Haste With Leisure, it said, a word game on the Latin phrase Festina Lente. I first inquired on the Houston forum about it, but nobody posted a reply and I almost did not go, afraid it would be a disappointment. It was not. It was a huge success, a remarkable evening we’ll remember for a long time. The main dining room, with its mirrors and a long well stocked bar has the atmosphere of a Parisian bistro, enhanced by the stuffed animals on the walls. There is also a separate smaller dinning area, quieter and more Victorian in style. But whenever you sit, you’ll be enjoying a scrumptious meal delivered with the utmost professionalism. We started with oysters, of which they had more than a dozen varieties available, and accompanied them with a sparkling Cremant de Bourgogne Brut. The oysters came with some divine – I mean it – crackers and four different sauces. We followed the oysters with Petit Fillet (choice of one or all of 6 sauces), super tender and cooked exactly as requested and accompanied by roasted mushrooms and the best green beans I have ever tasted. I did not think that you can improve much on the taste of green beans, but the Chef at State of Grace proved me wrong: they had three different varieties and brought with them a bouquet of delicious flavors. With the fillets, we drank a velvety Croze-Hermitage that was served at the right temperature. Service was prompt and professional. If I have any grudge, it’s about the lack of good artisanal bread (soft rolls do not do it for me) and the severe lack of light. People, it cannot be romantic with so many co-diners surrounding you and so much noise, it’s only inconvenient. You have excellent ambiance and superior food, why hide it? All in all, I loved this place and I’m putting it on my list of favorite eateries when I travel.

My monthly supper club group had dinner at State of Grace last week. The service at the bar and in the dinner room are exceptional, very patient and customer oriented. The bar has happy hour with an oysters pick list. My favorite part of this restaurant is the very relaxing, full window bar area to have a cocktail and oysters before dinner.

*Limitations: I've only eaten here in the evenings. If you do not eat at this place, you will not enter Valhalla! Drinks and oyster happy hour?! Who the heck has an oyster happy hour?! These guys! They go from $3.50 to $1, so, order at least a dozen. Libations? Yes. Pick your devil's brew and enjoy it w/ the "Opportunities" or "Starters" or "Supper" or, if you need to share...order from "Share." This is is how the menu is built...like a brick house. Taste? Abundantly excellent! My suggestions: 1) Call ahead and put in an RSVP. *Drinks? If you partake, partake. 2) Order the "Queso Oaxaca" or "Shrimp A La Plancha" 3) Supper - Sticky, Smoky Beef Rib...I am a savage, Mea Culpa. 4) Sides - Brussels Sprouts 5) Dessert - Toffee Bread Pudding

Fun, creative menu with uncomplicated main ingredients. Don't skip the fried chicken - it's exceptional. Wonderful, comfortable ambiance. Our waiter, and everyone we spoke to, was super. Well-executed craft cocktails too! I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try. Only glitch was an unbelievably tiny portion of shrimp on the Sunday evening offering.

The crab hush puppies are to die for! I had the soft shell crab sandwich and my friend had the lobster roll sandwich and we halved them and shared. Both excellent but very expensive! If you really want to treat yourself, an excellent restaurant! They also give you a fabulous gingersnap cookie filled with a delicious cream in the middle when exiting the restaurant.

Great ambiance, cool active oyster shucking area! Crab hush puppies dusted with powdered sugar. Nice wine selection. Very well dressed proper waiter. Top notch service. Tasty flavored baked redfish, 1/2 baked chicken in cream sauce, get the black rice, WOW! Overall great experience, even let us bring a small cake to celebrate & the presentation of that was unexpected!

This former drycleaners has been transformed into a delightful place for brunch or dinner. The ambiance is Southern eclectic as is the food. I recommend anything with their fried chicken. The hushpuppies are to die for, too.

My sister came to town for a visit and this was one of the restaurants we attend to introduce her to some local friends. We started with the figs in EVO and prosciutto in EVO, the figs where fresh and exceptional as was the prosciutto. I had the seared tuna as my main course which was some of the best tuna I have had in Houston. My sister and one friend got the scallops and the other got the blacken catfish (Special of the day) all outstanding. Dessert was the brownie Sunday and sticky toffee pudding both excellent but the pudding is a MUST!!!!! Will definitely be going back to see if they are consistent. Kudos to our waitress as well the service and knowledge was on point.

Met an old friend from high school here for lunch. We weren’t terribly hungry so decided to share several dishes. Started with the butter lettuce salad which was fantastic, and then moved to the grilled octopus which we just loved. Ended with the Felix recipe cheese enchiladas which as locals brought back wonderful memories to us both. And impeccable service. Love this place

with a laid back upscale feel and top shelf seafood and eats this place has it all without the need to dress to the T. Definitely in my top ten establishments of all time.

Last week I took a friend out to lunch for her 60th birthday, and wanted it to be special. State of Grace did not disappoint. Despite a potentially maddening situation with the valet car parking (my own pet peeve) our experience was five star. From the moment we walked in the door, the gracious and sincere welcome from the hostess and manager, and incredible service of the young woman who waited on us, we felt pampered. To celebrate the occasion we were presented a lovely sparkling wine to toast. But the FOOD (AAH, the food!) was the main star. We began with the grilled octopus in a Thai style drizzle and it was fabulously prepared. Next, the bucatini (perfectly al dente, and with a "simple" preparation that is probably only simple in the most seasoned chef hands) and the "not so Waldorf" salad, which had the warm chicken breast mixed with fresh greens and so many incredible flavors together, but NOT heavily dressed (my other pet peeve). We shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, which they presented with a candle but without the embarrassment of a song. They also surprised us with their chocolate cake (dense, scrumptious). I wish I could recall the name of our server because she really was incredible. We will definitely return (just might have to Uber, to avoid a parking kerfuffle!).

Located on Westheimer across from Lamar High School in a strip center. Beautiful inside. Valet as well as parking. Menu varied and unique. Service quick, excellent and professional. Brunch food across the board very disappointing with the exception of the coffee. Poached eggs in Benedict cold upon delivery. All looked good and plated well but taste missing and temps off. Meal comped by management and I was going to delay this review until I gave them another chance but I could not find anyone who felt a second chance would change my experience.

We followed waiter suggestions. The oysters, and hush puppies were excellent appetizers. The salads were great. The cheeseburger and fish special was amazing. The toffee and other desserts were amazing. Also great cocktails. The bread and sweet butter is a plus.

This restuarant was so welcoming. We were greated at the door with treats and the food and service were special.

Located in what looks like a residential neighborhood and wandered in at 9p on a Thurs to find the place packed. Really good energy coupled with friendly and knowledgeable staff got the evening off to a good start. The food was just as alluring -- since it was so late, we just had salad, spaghetti and dessert -- and all were wonderful.

All the starters at this place are amazing. Creative and tasty, all in the theme of the restaurant. The entrees are good. Better than good, but for the price tags associated with them, they are not great. The Oyster bar is amazing, and rivals one of the best in the city. The decor is awesome, although it can be a bit loud. Over all, its a place you have to try at least once.

I first came here for oysters but came back for dinner and enjoyed the duck. Lovely low lighting with several seating options. The music was a bit loud but we enjoyed our meal. The wine I picked was not available and when the waiter suggested another wine, when we wanted a 2nd bottle it was not available. I must say he was slightly aggressive to get us to order a 2nd bottle but we changed to wine by the glass.

Great oyster selection and a really inviting modernist oyster bar area Some of the best steak tartare we have ever had Great cocktails and interesting wine list make this a perfect special evening out

We celebrated my birthday at State of Grace. As soon as we were seated, we were served champagne. Then we ordered their amazing blue crab hush puppies.... so good!!! I had the scallops as my entree and my husband had the mahi. Both entrees were prepared perfectly. For dessert, I had the sticky toffee pudding and it is as good as any that I had while in London last year!! The presentation of my birthday dessert was also very nice. The service was great also!!! Highly recommend!!

Delicious food and good service. Ambiance is nice as well... if a tad dark. Would recommend the fresh oysters and the jumbo shrimp cocktail. Also the duck mole was amazing!!

Just enjoyed an great dinner at State of Grace in Houston. If you like Oysters, an great selection of East and West Coast Oysters, so fresh. We enjoyed the Wild Boar Bolognese with homemade pasta. And the most tasty sweet and savory Brussels Sprouts, Orange Zest, Pork Belly and seasonings. Service was very personable!! You must experience!!!

We were here for dinner one special night, and were super-pleased with the service. We tried the all-favorite hush puppies and those were good. We also had the gumbo for the table. I had the redfish and it was quite a portion. Loved the unique use of ingredients in the dish! I tried the Southside, Antique cocktail and the bar put together a mocktail for my husband. We will come back here for even the drinks! Overall a really satisfying dinner.

Have been to State of Grace a few times now and enjoyed every dish. From raw oysters, to the unique salad wedge, fresh seared tuna salad, to the hush puppies, there is a unique twist to all their dishes. You can’t go wrong.

This is really nice place that I need to go there a number of times to try the different aspects. And by aspects I mean they have quiet cozy dining rooms to a more higher energy room or the cool bar. I also need 3 stomachs or a few visits since the menu appears limited but a lot of good things. Everything I tried was very good. Server was very helpful and friendly.

Terrible for this reason. They DO NOT HONOR RESERVATIONS! The food is great! The staff are wonderful, helpful, and accommodating. There is a special room that is wonderfully quieter. Our part of 4 had reservations for 3 weeks. We get there and oh, it will be 45 minutes before we can even think about seating you. So what are res for? We wanted quieter. We got noisy seating. One could not hear even simple table conversation! Sunday at noon time. This has happened repeatedly. So why return? The reasons fade and now are gone!

I was in Houston for business and a client recommended this place. Food and service are great. You must order the hushpuppies! Typically, I do not like hushpuppies but these are really good. Will definitely come back next time I'm in town.

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our recent dinner at State of Grace. The restaurant is very elegantly furnished without being stuffy. The service was excellent. I had the hush puppies to start and they were the best I’ve ever eaten! My daughter had the beef tartare and said it was delicious. I had the seared scallops for the main course and they were perfectly cooked and seasoned well. Desserts were the icing on the cake! There is a long wine list and a full bar.

We met friends for dinner with high expectations. The 6 of us were seated in the dining room with the bar. The music was very loud which made conversation difficult. Our waiter was knowledgeable and service was good. The food was hit or miss. Wonderful duck, redfish too salty, carrots were so burnt we could hardly tell what we were eating and the arugula salad was wimpy.Still we would consider coming again and trying something different.

Our first visit to State of Grace did not disappoint. Our group was guided by our waiter to some selected items. Such as their hush puppies (excellent). We also selected the soft shell crab (one of my favorite dishes) which was delicious as well. For the main course three of us ordered the seared scallops (waiter recommended and hit the culinary target) and the blackened mahi-mahi (another amazing dish). We thoroughly enjoyed the food, atmosphere, decor and service. We will return!

The service here was really outstanding. They were very busy and we had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our table but they brought us champagne while we waited. Then when the food was slightly delayed, we were given two appetizers for the table. My husband got the chicken dinner and it was the best chicken I’d ever tried. I had the scallops and they were cooked to perfection. Loved the entire dining experience!

My wife and I went on a date here and we were impressed from the moment we walked in. The restaurant is beautiful and modern and had a very nice vibe inside. There was a variety of oysters to choose from and all were excellent. The service we had was outstanding and our server made great recommendations on everything we ordered including our wine. The dishes we had (the mahi and the scallops) were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Really interesting take on southern dishes (the collard greens and the Brussel sprouts were very very good). I would highly recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. Note: the hush puppies were awesome definitely get those!!!

Went to lunch at State of Grace today with a friend. I can’t begin to tell you what an awesome place this is. Food and service is unsurpassed. Had happy hour oysters and they were delicious. Split the salmon salad and the pozole and both were delectable. Must try the toffee pudding . Out of this world. You have to try this place if you haven’t already!

This is in my opinion, the best restaurant in Houston. From the moment you walk to the moment you the leave, the experience is outstanding. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The servers are well trained and execute there duties to extreme perfection with an elegant presentation. Now the food, my goodness, is phenomenal. The dishes are traditional with a very tasteful unique twist. My spouse and went on Valentines Day; which the restaurant had a limited set course menu. Each section had a few options and it was impressive and well worth the price. I had one of the best tuna caprese; it has the perfect amount of basil, mozzarella, balsamic and olive oil. It had thinly cut slices of fresh tuna laid out perfectly on top of an amazing sauce. For my main course I had a perfect cut of fillet, with a lobster tail on the side. The steak was cooked perfectly to my request, very flavorful, and no need to add anything to it. The lobster, was fresh, and non-rubbery. Excellent. For dessert I had the Black Forest cheese cake which was very rich, with the perfect texture and served at the right temperature. This was one of the best fine dinning experiences. Highly recommend this place.

We had gone to brunch at a downtown restaurant with friends, and on the way home we decided to stop for a glass of wine at a place we had never been before - and we selected State of Grace. They have two bar areas, one that appeared to be an oyster/seafood bar with backless stools, and a second, larger bar with stools with backs. We opted for the stools with backs. BTW - a very pretty restaurant. Leah was our main bartender/server and took very good care of us. Although we were very full from our brunch, when we learned they had $1 oysters, we made room for a half dozen - 2 from P.E.I., 2 from Massachusetts and 2 from Alabama. All lovely. Personally, I liked the ones from Alabama best. My husband liked the "Pink Ladies" from MA best. On the way in I eyed and picked up a postcard they were offering. The host told me that if I write it, they will mail it. Very cool. So I wrote cards to the friends we just had brunch with (as we know they will love this restaurant). The oyster deals will definitely bring us back sooner rather than later. Everyone from the greeters to the ladies behind the bar made our experience very enjoyable.

Met our daughter here for dinner-we we’re impressed from start to finish with the service and food. The crab hush puppies are outstanding as was the strawberry/buratta toast. I had duck risotto that was remarkably good. Great wine selection and terrific staff make this a recommended place to visit.

We were excited to get reservations at State of Grace on a Saturday night. The restaurant is designed very nicely. The bar is located in the front middle and small earing areas are located around it. When we arrived, the noise level was goid, bit it escalater during the evening. I ordered burrata that included grilled peaches and heirloom tomatoes. It was excellent. Others ordered the Farm Salad,Shrimp Coctail and Campechana. Everyone loved their choices. For dinner I had Pan Roasted Snapper which was delicious. "Good Breed Chicken" was excellent as was the Branzini. The House Fries looked great. We did not order dessert. Our waiter was very attentive at the beginning of the meal and then disappeared. He also messed up splitting of the bill. Everthing was taken care of by management to our satisfaction.

They do have red fish which everyone seemed to love—chicken is good but nothing special. Shezewan eggplant side dish was delicious... split a wedge salad—very good. If you want quiet, ask for the side room as it is a busy loud place if you are in the main room.

This restaurant is so Houston. We started with some of the best oysters I’ve ever had. Then I had the fish. The food was excellent. I really liked the ambiance though, it felt casual but was still elegant. The menu was really unique too.

We were there on Sunday and the service was ok. The food We ordered oysters and beef carpaccio as appetizers and they were good but carpaccio in the small size. For dinner I had scallops sharing the enchilada with husband and was plenty. My friend did not do so well, she ordered yellow fin tuna pozole and they forgot the tuna!!! Wow!!! Not enough sauce and bad taste, I would NOT recommend this dish. Drinks were ok and dessert just barely average. They did not bring our coffee with dessert and when we had to remind them, they were cold! Decor is very nice, but the service is SLOW!!!

What a wonderful evening enjoying 7 courses at the Chef’s Counter! Each dish was inventive and delicious and watching the preparations at the wood fired stove was interesting. The chef even added an 8th course after our group kept admiring the short rib dish being prepared for others!

Be prepared to valet your car as parking is near impossible at this trendy eatery. We were graciously and promptly greeted on entering and as we had a reservation, seated promptly in the Private Dining Room. This restaurant is very popular and the bar area and bar-side tables are very noisy. If you want to converse with your dinner guests, ask for a table in the Private Dining Room (available unless it is booked for a private event). Our waiter, David, greeted us by name, was friendly, courteous and gave us time to chat, make menu decisions, but was attentive to not making us wait for service. Started with a Caipirinha, which was NOT a Caipirinha but an invented cocktail that should be called something else, as it bore no similarity other than starting with Cachaça. Charred calamari toast was delicious (although one guest thought it was too greasy). Market Salad was good. The Blackened Mahi-Mahi was declared spectacular, as was the Red Snapper, portions a fair size. The Pork Schnitzel was the size of a dinner plate, a "lumberjack" portion, but delicious. The Duck Carnitas were delicious, meat fell off the bone and the mole was excellent, but the portion of duck was twice what I could have eaten, this is a dish that could be shared by 2 people in my opinion. Only complaint about service was that since 3 out of 4 people were finished their dinners, waitstaff removed their plates and I was left with a plate half-full of duck while my guests watched me eat. Coconut cake was tasty, Sticky Toffee Pudding more of a cake with a sauce rather than an authentic Sticky Toffee Pudding with dates, OK but not spectacular. Lattes were perfect. I would visit again provided the Private Dining Room was available.

State of Grace is off the chart good. Started with Gumbo, shishitto peppers, then moved to the corn ravioli (unreal), and scallops and chorizo. Entres were fantastic. Dessert of smoked chocolate Sunday to finish. Excellent service. Cocktails were right.

Limited options that won't clog your arteries. Superb decor and interior design. Entrees absurdly expensive for the portion size. Red Snapper was good but not that good. Pass on the fried chicken app. The crest of hen pasta was a solid dish.

I have read the reviews about the great food and atmosphere so I had to experience this for myself. I came here with some friends to celebrate one of my bestie's birthday. The whole experience was fantastic from start to finish. The food was indeed fantastic, but what put it over the top as far as dinning experience was the service. Everyone was so darn friendly, and genuinely so. Our waiter Suh was so attentive, helped us navigate the extensive menu and make great recommendations. I ordered the Fresca Fresca for drink which is a delicious strawberry purée concoction mixed with my choice of alcohol which I picked rum! So fresh and delicious and no skimping on the alcohol! I was in oyster heaven with there vast selection of East coast and Canadian oysters. We ordered all of the starters which were delicious but the stand out were the hush puppies and the Elote! For entree our group shared the pork chop and the sticky rib. The sticky rib stole the entire show, it was so tender and literally fell of the bone. When combined with the roti, pickles and cilantro my taste buds were in heaven!!! We also ordered the Kimchi collards which were tasty as well! We actually had plans to go to another place for dessert but when we saw the dessert menu we quickly cancelled our plans and opted to eat dessert here! We tried the sticky toffee-out of this world. The other part that I loved is they did not rush us out. They continued to fill our water and basically let us be to enjoy ourselves well after our meal was over. I can't say enough good things about this place and hope to come back again really soon!

I can't decide what was better, the food or the service! Our server, Mark, was excellent! We had never been to SoG before so Mark introduced us to everything wonderful! Ask him how toffee pudding came to be! Lol! Thank you for fabulous experience Mark! We will be back!

I thoroughly enjoyed the food at State of Grace. I thought the menu was great and had a nice selection for everyone’s preferences. I chose the Felix enchiladas with refried beans, Mexican rice and 2 eggs. They were delicious and fulfilling. The warm berry crostada was exquisite. I thoroughly enjoyed the family ambiance. The service was quick and the staff engaging and attentive. I have to say though that the prices were slightly higher than other restaurants with similar cuisine. I’d still recommend it and I would definitely return.

Definitely a place to try at least once, if not twice (like I did, so far)! The ambiance and decor is chic, modern and classy. We've been for dinner and lunch. I would love to try their brunch menu! Their lunch items are awesome--mostly sandwiches accompanied by their house chips or fries. I've tried the Korean hot chicken sandwich and soft shell crabwich, both amazing in their own right. For dinner, we've tried several menu items, but it changes seasonally, so some things are not always available. The oysters are good... I LOVE those hushpuppies that everyone raves about--that powdered sugar does the trick with making those things memorable! We've also gotten the special, which was a duck--good, but nothing memorable. The design of the U-shaped bar area is beautiful, but there's elbow room to be desired when sitting there to eat. Otherwise, it's great for just drinks or a shared appetizer.

Always happy to return for dinner. Excellent meal. Fresh and top quality ingredients accompanied by masterful cuisine.

Houston has much better seafood. Crowded place with nice clientele. Priced to high for the amount of food. Disappointed and was expecting better.

We love state of grace - our most recent visit was in Nov 2016. I'd highly recommend the smoky sticky beef ribs. The flavors are amazing. And even if you share the entree, you'll very likely take home leftovers. Other favorites are the octopus and the burrata.

Everything about the menu was so much different than you'd expect. My Bloody Mary was made with Tequila and tomatillos which created a green drink. Not what I expected but very good and fun! Beignets were average. Cinnamon bun was outstanding. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. Again. Not what I expected and unusual. Instead of muffins, it was cornbread, topped with spicy crawfish. Very good. I love eating "out of my box" Recommend highly but be prepared to revive something unexpected.

My husband and I have been meaning to try this restaurant out for a while and finally were able to go- what I great restaurant! The food and atmosphere is fantastic. The $1 oyster happy hour is amazing and I love the oyster bar space/setup. We got the beef carpaccio- it was pretty good but also pretty expensive ($17), the agnolotti which was amaxing but pretty small for $20, and the Sticky, Smoky Beef Rib which was huge and probably one of the best dishes I've had in a while- excellent! For dessert we got the mousse which was very good too. They have a great wine selection and make excellent cocktails. Can't wait to go back!

Started with a good Bloody Mary — glad to see they use Zing Zang. The oven grilled oysters were good notwithstanding the oysters were small — not gulf oysters but that is OK. I had the chicken fried chicken — wonderful buttermilk biscuit and sausage gravy. Oh and the chicken was good as well — wife had the EL Felix enchilada— a nice throw back to a long lost Houston Tex mex favorite. We enjoyed the meal.

Although I had lunch a couple of times at this place, and did not think it was that great, when other family members wanted to try it out for dinner, we agreed to meet for dinner. Disappointment ensued. We were celebrating one person’s birthday which was greeted with “happy birthday” but nothing else. Most restaurants at this price point might send a dessert or some little recognition but not this place. The birthday was long forgotten during our meal. That aside, there were several deficiencies with our dinner service. Even though we had two rounds of drinks, our wait person kept pressing us to order. Very bad form. We did, however, order in a reasonable amount of time and due to how long it took to get our food, wonder what was the rush. Interestingly when food did start arriving, we were initially served someone else’s order not once, not twice but three times! Never had that happen before in ANY restaurant. Inexcusable. On the fourth try, some of our entries were not even warm much less hot. Two of us had the chicken dish with potato puree but the purée was more like a cold gravy when we finally received our order. It also appeared that this busy place was under staffed. Our wait person did not check to make sure everything was fine after we finally received our entries. Further we all had empty water glasses toward the end of the meal. When our wait person asked us about dessert, we had to ask for more water. Instead of the wait person apologizing for four empty glasses, the response was: of course you will get more water, as if we were idiots for asking! Not appropriate. The final blow concerned dessert. The birthday person wanted the sticky toffee pudding which was recommended. Only problem, we were advised it would take at least 20 minutes. Usually a “good” restaurant will advise early on during the meal if there is a special dessert that takes a long time. When this was mentioned to our wait person, we got another snotty reply. After waiting for entries for so long, we opted to skip dessert. Instead, after leaving, we walked a few doors down and picked up Baskin Robbins! Bottom line for us: the food is pretty good, when served hot but the service and attitude are not. There are too many really good to great restaurants in Houston to put up with this type of thing, especially at a higher price point. We won’t be back anytime soon.

It's an upscale restaurant with great atmosphere , the menu it's more like a fusion menu it's a mix of everything but it's all very good . I can't really remember what we order but I do remember the experience of being great . It is a fun place to go an have a drink . They have a good cocktails menu . I will definitely do back . Make sure you have a reservation .

State of Grace was a terrific find in Houston! The food was delicious and our waiter, Dominique, made it a five-star experience! We had pasta, seafood and a heavenly banana creation which exceeded our expectations. The restaurant is a must -try.

We finally got to experience state of grace after hearing so much about it. I really enjoyed it the food was wonderful the service was great. If you’d like a octopus it was beyond delicious. As much as I enjoyed the experience I’m not really sure I would go back for a second time because the menu was a little too diverse for me.

Be sure to pick up a ginger cookie when leaving. Excellent service. Comfortable & subtle decor. Food is good.

Would definitely recommend at least one visit to S of G because of the uniqueness of both the menu and and preparation of the familiar dishes being served different than what most are used to. Sunday Dinner started with a delicious biscuit and seasonal cranberry jam. The table was then served a green salad with a very light vinaigrette dressing - nothing to brag about. The fried chicken entree I decided on was perfectly cooked with a spicy/honey taste and crunchy bite - very good! Our table shared a very strange squash presentation (looked like a hollowed out russet potato - wasn't good), twice baked potato (just ok), and very tasty mac and cheese for our sharable sides. Our final course (of course) was dessert - a choice of mixed fruit or coconut pie - OPT FOR THE PIE!!! It was delicious and probably not as good for me as I would hope, but man, it was amazing! The Chicken fried steak, Pork Shank Ragu, and Gulf Catch (Redfish) were also eaten at our table - all very good, but sneaky spicy (if ya know what I mean). Definitely recommend, but doubt we will return just because so many places around have so many good reviews.

A little searching on the web for a cool place for brunch landed us at SOG. The great reviews were spot on. We started with raw oysters complimented with fresh grated horseradish, three sauces, homemade crackers and hot sauce. Amazing. Next was the blue crab omelet for me and the shrimp enchilada for my wife. Both were in the top five things we have ever eaten. The wood grilled bacon was so good we ordered seconds. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was vibrant. We will return for dinner as soon as we can with friends in tow. Hats off to Ford Fry and crew. They nailed it.

Absolutely loved State of Grace. We enjoyed their Sunday Supper. Great service, great atmosphere and great food! Definitely recommend!

Beautiful and sophisticated decor yet can't say the same about the food. We were truly looking forward to try this restaurant since it has great reviews but all 3 of us were quite disappointed. We ordered three different dishes from the dinner menu and unfortunately none of them were great, average to good the most. The best of everything we've tried were Crawfish hushpuppies and impressive raw oysters selection.

First time in Houston and wanted to try out locales that had craft cocktails. I wasn't disappointed here. First had a Texas Scofflaw which featured bourbon, housemade blackberry grenadine, dry vermouth, lemon and orange bitters. Refreshing drink and friend ordered one after me. Second was Buffalo Speedster featuring bourbon, aperol and rhubarb bitters. Again it was perfect. Also had some local oysters on the half shell which were enjoyed by all.

This was our first visit to Texas and Houston, and our son wanted to treat us to brunch at State of Grace. Now I know why this restaurant is my son's favorite! Our server, Martin, was a delight from the moment we sat down. When we told him it was our first visit, he left and returned with three glasses of champagne. Talk about a great start! The food was exceptional: we started with the biggest cinnamon roll I've ever seen, blue crab hushpuppies, and deviled eggs. Entrees: griddle cakes that were huge and oh so tender, swimming in Steen's butter and buttermilk syrup, Southern Shakshuka (grits to die for), and chicken fried chicken. Yes, we took home lots of leftovers. Although we had no room for dessert, Martin boxed up some delicious cookies for us. A great "welcome" to Texas, and I can't wait to return.

I had heard several friends express their favorable impressions prior to our visit. It exceeded my expectations. The menu has a creative offering of tempting selections from seafood from the gulf to steak and plenty in between. The service is impeccable and decor simple elegance. It is now one of my favorite places for a special occasion.

This was my third time at this restaurant. It is a beautiful restaurant in a strip center across from Lamar HS. I had lunch today with a friend. I had the grilled tuna salad, and my friend had the shrimp remoulade salad. Both were amazing, and I would order that tuna salad again without a doubt. The greens were fresh and flavorful. I asked for the tuna to be fully cooked, and it was done perfectly. I also appreciate the waiter not trying to talk me out of having it well done-which is what most waiters do! The restaurant was not crowded, but the music was loud and that volume does not help to foster a nice quiet lunch with good communication. Can you please turn down the volume? The waiter was attentive, but a little pushy. We wanted to sit and talk before ordering, but he wanted us to order almost immediately. There is valet parking available. Upon leaving you can pick up a gingerbread cream-filled cookie to go. I have never had one, but they look good.

Casual, yet sophisticated. State of Grace has it all - great food and service. The space itself is somewhat non-descript on the outside. In a strip mall. Inside though, it's really cool. There are three or four discreet areas that all have a different feel. It's really well designed. The bar is beautiful. There are actually two different bars it would seem - maybe one is an oyster bar. The food was excellent. The chicken sandwich is great - so is the lobster roll. The brussel sprouts had excellent flavor and the fries couldn't be better. This is a great spot with a great feel with great service and great food!

We were not too hungry but still wanted to go out and grab a bite. On top of that, I was looking forward to finding a nice place with ambiance. I found everything I wanted and more at State of Grace!! First of all, I love the name, State of Grace! The restaurant is very nicely decorated, with a large bar, beautiful lamps and high ceilings. The music is good, lively but not too loud, enough to make you feel happy while letting you talk and enjoy your dinner. The warm bread they brought as we arrived was fantastic. We shared a few delicious dishes: a tasty young kale "caesar" salad with lots of finely shredded Manchego cheese, pain frite, chorizo and boquerones, a wonderful steak tartare, shrimp a la plancha with a sopping biscuit, and a cheese enchilada a la Felix. As our server told us, this enchilada was served for years at a restaurant in Houston, and after it closed, the owner of State of Grace got the original recipe. I love dishes with a history! For dessert we shared an awesome Sticky Toffee Pudding with Malted Milk Ice Cream. What a sweet pleasure! My mouth waters just thinking about it. I want to go back right now and have another one. Our server, Britney, was extraordinary, nice and helpful. She gave us wonderful advise and guided our selection. Only two details: First, some of our dishes were very spicy. I would suggest they warn the customer. And second, when we entered the restaurant we saw the host giving some very tempting whoopie cookies to the people leaving after having dined at State of Grace. But when we left, there were no host and no cookies. Probably it was too late. I would have loved to try those cookies! What a wonderful dinner we had at this restaurant!

From making reservations (and changing the number of people) all the way through dessert, the restaurant and our server, Connor, got every single detail perfect. We had requested a quiet table, and we were placed in a small room which was quiet, while the large part of the establishment was noticeable noisier. Connor came to us almost immediately, asking whose birthday we were celebrating (a note made on the reservation), asked for preprandial drink orders, even offering suggestions if anyone needed help. When we told him we wanted to decide what we were going to have for dinner before ordering wine, he understood completely, and promptly brought our menus. Since our choices ranged rather widely, we decided on wines by the glass, and Connor knew the wine list very well, suggesting excellent pairings for various dishes. He also knew the best dishes the restaurant offers. Our "appetizers" included the hushpuppies, Texas Toast, and the hearth-roasted octopus. All three were delicious, but the octopus was far and away the most delicious I've ever tasted (quite spicy, however). Our entrees included the mahi-mahi, an 8-oz filet mignon, and the redfish on the half-shell. Sides included the Szechuan eggplant (spicy) and the Venetian black rice. There were virtually no leftovers, if that gives you any clue as to the quality of the food. We had ordered a Texas Pecan Ball for dessert for the birthday girl, so Connor brought a complementary glass of Prosecco for each diner to celebrate her special day. This was simply a wonderful dining experience.

Convenient location on Westheimer across the street from Lamar High School. Busy on a Thursday night and noisy (8 on a scale of 0-10). Trendy ambiance and decor. Many beautiful people. Cocktail menu robust although beer selection limited. More craft beers please. Wine list serviceable. Menu a bit confusing and difficult to read in low light. My pork schnitzel was very tasty. Duck tacos also very good but could have been better with a mango salsa added. Roasted Brussels sprouts rocked. Desserts excellent. Sticky toffee pudding the best I’ve had outside of Scotland. Food more Charleston than New Orleans. Valet parking best way to park.

I can’t say enough about this place. I had been there a couple of times before for business meals, but this July 4 for lunch, my wife and I went, she for the first time. The food and service are fantastic. I tried the happy hour oysters and got one of each kind for one dollar each. We then proceeded to have two excellent appetizers. The crab appetizer and the hush puppies were delicious. The quality of the fish is excellent. As an added bonus, on your way out you get a wonderful gingerbread cream cookie. Before we left, my wife was already talking about coming back. It is a great setting and the varied menu will leave you satisfied. Great place!

Just back to our hotel after dining at State of Grace. We loved the Sunday Supper menu - starter, salad, entree, 3 sides to share, and dessert for $29pp, in this fabulous restaurant with knowledgeable and attentive staff (thanks Jordan!) What a great deal! The food was outstanding, the biscuits with a raspberry-lemon conserve and their own cured ham, were melt-in-your-mouth amazing, a well-dressed salad, followed by our mains (I had the t-bone mostly because I wanted to try the crispy potatoes, he had the etouffee) and sides.. with a lovely, light pineapple upside down cake for dessert. I’m wishing we were going back for the full menu.. it’s the best Sunday dinner I’ve had this year; everything was delicious.. it’s a Yes, Chef 🙌🏻 from me!

This is an easy review. Fish of the day was Swordfish. I've had it in many restaurants in many different countries. A hard fish to cook properly. Dries out quickly. I was hesitant to order it. . . without a doubt....the BEST piece of Swordfish I have eaten in my LIFE!!!!. Buttery smooth, not dry, not stringy. No kidding and no bull. I have to go back and have it again when it comes up in rotation because I just still can't believe it. Homemade crackers are excellent. Hush puppies are excellent also. But the fish.....wow.

Excellent spot for HH or special occasion- Love the super creative cocktails and the oysters are a must have!

This restaurant was such a treat. The ambiance is fun, the wait staff exceptional and the food amazing. I have no negative things to say. It was my birthday dinner and the waitress even brought me a "birthday cake shot". It was such a great evening. I highly recommend the hush puppies, the shrimp cocktail (huge, fresh shrimp), and the scallops. Everything was magnificent. The only thing that didn't knock my socks off was the chocolate cake. It was good - just wasn't as spectacular as the rest of the meal. I can not wait to go back.

We didn’t plan for it but we were so happy to finally stop by. Both service and food were fantastic. If it only had an outdoor patio, it could possibly be one the very best restaurants Houston has too offer. We will be back!!!!

Excellent choice for dinner with family and friends. The hushpuppies are amazing as is the octopus and chicken/shrimp with tomato curry sauce. Fabulous flavors and remarkably good service staff.

First-We are Ohio travelers looking for a good dinner & found State of Grace. The food was wonderful-fresh shucked oysters looked great - and a very appealing bar and oyster shucking station is very cool! We got the delicious scallops and cacio e pepe! OMG - pasta was as good as we got in Venice-FANTASTICO! Most of all the knowledgeable servers and general manager went over and above to care for us & provided a comped dessert! Wonderful experience & a gorgeous relaxing restaurant ...it's a winner & a fabulous stop! AWESOME!

We loved our dinner here. Pretty much everything was perfect. Starting with our server who couldn't have provided better service. He was helpful in providing guidance with both our drink and food selections. It is my understanding that the menu changes often so it was nice to get his input on what was really fresh and good. We had such a hard time time deciding on what to order that we discussed many options. We ordered tons of food. There were only two of us and we ordered two appetizers, two mains and a side. I mentioned that I was sad that there was another side that sounded so good but I knew we just wouldn't have room. I couldn't believe when that dish showed up with compliments from our server - just so we could try it! So nice! On our way out, we were given complimentary whoopi cookies to go. It was all so perfect!

We were visiting my son in Houston and he recommended this place. Great choice. The ambiance is really great. We had the hush puppies and oven roasted oysters, they were both amazing especially the oysters. For dinner I ordered the oven roasted red fish and it was one of the best tasting whole fish dinners I've tasted. Prepared perfect. Our waitress was over the top - funny, helpful and never too far away. Can't wait to return.

This was a very energetic restaurant. We were early and stayed a long time to enjoy a great meal. Great waiter, Dominque, and nice suggestions. Order the hush puppies to start.

We returned to State of Grace with some friends. The place was packed on a Saturday evening and there were folks waiting in line to get in. While Westheimer is all torn up, valet parking worked smoothly. We got our table, but we asked to be changed, since the one we had assigned to us was just by the opening to the kitchen, with the expected kitchen smell and noise. Our waiter was attentive and efficient. The menu, which changes frequently, had a number of new and attractive items. The Campechana was a hit, as was the grilled octopus and the beef carpaccio was paper thin, tender and with just the right amount of olive oil. The twice-fried chicken was not as good as the previous time; it tasted heavier, greasier. The bucatini with bottarga was a disappointment. The bottarga was nowhere to be seen and the pasta was sticky and hard to eat. The snapper, on the other hand was exquisite, made to the point and juicy and flavorful. The scallops were also delicious, as were the Brussels sprouts and the side of fries. The short rib melted in your mouth and there was no need for a knife. The panna cotta was above average and the pecan tart was satisfying. The wine list covers Italy quite well, so we had a great Soave and an even better Taurasi. Overall, a delightful evening, and an improvement over our previous visit.

We started off at the bar, sampling a few of the cocktails, and a few dozen oysters. Note, if you get there early enough, they have a variety of fresh oysters flown in that day on happy hour. We also had the famous crab hushpuppies appetizer, very good! We tried the snapper, as well as the pork chop. Both were outstanding. We will definitely be back!

Really great atmosphere, good food... something for everyone to enjoy. We had to get a later reservation but were taken to our table immediately on arrival even as busy as they were. Good wine selection also.

I recommend a reservation, if you have more than 3 people because you are likely to be seated in the Oyster Room or at the Bar, both of which have linear seating. In the Oyster Room, the banquette along the exterior wall is comfortable, though the bar stools appeared well-cushion, just without back support. If you sit at the oyster bar, you can watch the oyster chef prepare those dishes. The food portions are small at lunch time but they were nicely presented and served hot, when appropriate. The salmon salad was light and delicious; the gumbo had a broth, rather than a roux, so tasted like a good crawfish soup. The coffee was unremarkable - a little on the weak side. They offer you a homemade cookie on the way out; it's made from two soft ginger (mild) cookies sandwiching a cream icing, which was nice, but could be crumbly. Service was good. My only complaint was that the wait staff asked if everything tasted "delicious" before a bite was even raised to our lips, then did not check again until we were done. Since everything was good, this was not a problem, but it would not have been easy to catch her eye. Parking is limited and controlled by valet for the restaurant. This is recommended, unless you have used a ride service of some sort. There are other services and retail in this small strip center, so they require spaces until 6-8pm most days and there are limited options to park yourself in the area.

Everyone should experience the chefs table at State of Grace at least once in their life . Beyond amazing and it changes depending on the preferences of your party.

The exterior belies the beauty of the inside! I love that the wall of windows is next to beautiful trees. The food is interesting, delicious, and satisfying. I have been here two times and had great waitstaff both times. This is definitely one of my go-to lunch/dinner places now!

Had a group of 4 friends from high school meet for Sunday brunch to celebrate upcoming 40th birthdays. It was lovely. They even gave us complimentary bubbles for a toast. We loved the deviled eggs & hush puppies! Everyone enjoyed their cocktails & wine. I had carne guisada spare ribs with eggs, rice & beans. This did not disappoint. 2 others had the kale salad & one had another Mexican egg dish. Dessert was all fantastic! Bread pudding, chocolate cake, lemon pie & a cheesecake. Give this a go!

Mixed feedback. Some food was very good (i.e. the hushpuppies were delicious), while some was average (i.e. the sauce on the chicken fried chicken killed the flavor of the chicken). Spicy food is not identified in the menu. Service could be better. They didn't bring one of our drinks and they brought an overflowing cappuccino without a plate. $50 per person drinking water and sharing plates.

State of Grace has a nice and up-twisted Southern Food flair in a cozy and romantic setting. The redfish on half-she'll was quite nice. It also has a lively bar scene. The service is outstanding and friendly. Valet parking is available. It is located in the River Oaks area on Westheimer near Lamar High School.

Had dinner on Sunday and found food, service and decor to be very good.We had seafood rather than the set fixed price menu which can be improved.

I took my husband out for his belated BD dinner and we both loved it. Great ambiance and attentive, polite staff. The Small Stack Seafood Tower made us quite happy. Half a lobster, 6 large shrimps, 12 fresh raw oysters, a dozen crab fingers, and a serving of cocktail crab served with home-made crackers unlike the saltine kinds. Two things—the shrimps were over-cooked and the lobster's head was cleaned off of the delectable tomalley fat—the yellow/orange paste inside its head. Bourdain would be in a state of shock seeing that! LOL... Otherwise, everything else on the tower was perfect, especially, the oysters. Dinner comprised of Soft Shell Crab, Kimchi & Collards, Tomato Soup, Tartare and Chocolate Sundays. We always preferred more appetizers than main dishes. This allows us to sample a variety of dishes and not feeling too full. Though, this dinner was a little too much at the end of the meal. The soft shell crab was meaty and crunchy, not overly breaded. Interesting take on the Kimchi Collards that I'll have to try making at home. Home-made tomato soup was delicious and the Tartare was terrific and different! It had an Asian flavour and smokiness fused with the coarsely chopped raw beef—divine. The shrimp crackers that came with it were stale or it would have been a great accompaniment. No wonder SOG has been around for over 3 years while others that opened around the same time had closed its doors. The food stays fresh and delicious. A few small flaws can be remedied by more attention to details.

I was taken here for lunch to celebrate my nephew's new title of VP in his company. As soon as I walked in, the reservation was checked, and (though early) was taken to a lovely table looking outward. Our waiter was a gentleman who balanced knowledge of the food and beverage offerings with a delightful dose of the restaurant's history and ambiance. He was exactly on point! Oh, THE FOOD IS PERFECT! Yes, I had the hush puppies and it brought back the delights of New Orleans right in Houston! Then, the moist, buttery lobster roll sandwich for lunch was garished with freshly made potato chips. The tastes all blendly wonderfully AND THERE WAS NOT A PASTY SAUCE TO BE FOUND. NB: Parking is a bit of a trick - use the Valet parking - it's free but I would generously tip since they do a great job in an area of city construction!

We visited State of Grace recently based a recommendation and good reviews. Overall the experience was very good. We enjoyed their take on a tomato and mozzarella salad, Brussels sprouts, and a couple pasta dishes. One in our party is vegetarian and he ordered the tomato and mozzarella salad without the meat and had to send it back when it was delivered to us with meat. We had a couple of mishaps like that during the evening but the server apologized and fixed it quickly. The manager even came over to make sure we got exactly what we ordered a couple of times. Mistakes happen, it's how you handle it that leaves an impression and they handled it well. One tip for wine drinkers, ask for the wine list! You at given a drinks menu but it by no means is the extent of their wine list. They have a fairly extensive wine list. Arrive early for your reservation and enjoy a drink at the bar. They serve some well made cocktails. Would we go back, yes. The menu changes so next time will certainly be a new experience.

Wonderful food and a friendly atmosphere. I had the red fish and my wife had the chicken. The chicken was moist and tender. The fish was excellent. They brought you homemade rolls in the beginning of the meal. The complimentary ginger snap whoopie pies at the end were amazing. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

I recently ate at State of Grace with my wife and daughter. It was a Sunday evening during which the restaurant only serves their Sunday Supper, family style menu - a four course menu with each guest being able to choose from a selection of mains and side dishes. Let me start by saying that absolutely everything we ate at State of Grace was perfect and the service that we received from Desiree could not possibly have been bettered. She started us with wine and cocktails before bringing an appetizer of shaved country ham accompanied by a tart seasonal jam. The flavor combination was amazing and very well received at the table. Next up was a simple salad of petite greens, apple and pecorino cheesed dressed with a sublime lemon vinaigrette. Light and delicious. Now is where it got tough - choosing the main courses and sides. Everything on offer sounded wonderful and after a lot of thought and discussion our order was made. Fried chicken, coated with a crispy honey batter, petite fillet and Bouillabaisse for my wife, who is a seafood lover. For sides we ordered glazed Brussel Sprouts, mashed potatoes and Mac n Cheese. I can't begin to describe just how good every single dish that arrived at the the table tasted! The fried chicken is by far the best I have ever tasted - crispy coating, a delicious hint of heat mixed with the sweetness of the honey and soft, succulent chicken. The petite fillet was perfectly seasoned and cooked while the seafood in the Bouillabaisse was fresh and cooked to perfection. Dinner wrapped up with a selection of small desserts, each of which was supremely delicious! And the cost of this meal, fit for a king - would you believe $29 per person ($12 supplement for the steak). This truly has to be the best value meal available in Houston today! You could easily spend that much eating at an Outback Steakhouse and get nowhere near the quality of the food and service that is being delivered at Sate of Grace! You really should try this River Oaks gem on a Sunday Evening. Needless to say, we will return - hopefully to sit at the Chef's Counter to observe just how they create such delicious and flavorful food.

I came for lunch and sat on the bar. They have a large selection of oysters some of them cost 1.5 each between 11-16. So I tasted most of them. Must admit that being used to European oysters I find most of the American ones too mellow or even sweet. In the end I had 6 blue point and 6 deep cup they were the best. Then I had an amazingly tender and tasty and highly recommended octopus. They have some sandwiches in the menu which for me makes it a restaurant not suitable for dinner but great for lunch. They have a nice wine selection in glasses. I highly enjoyed this place and highly recommend it for lunch.

I have always enjoyed sitting at the bar at this restaurant— good cocktails and enjoy the ambiance. Tried the chicken entree and it was wonderful. A Picata style sauce — caper berries instead of simply capers. And the chicken was bone in and skin on — extremely tender and juicy. I never thought the words “best chicken I ever ate” would leave my lips but they did. I would order this again in a heartbeat and I will next time I am there which is probably in a week

Fantastic quality place with excellent food selections. Little bit of everything for everyone. Service staff was very accommodating to our needs, very polite.

Had dinner last week here, glad they are up and running again. We were there in time for the oyster happy hour, very good selection. My wife had a petite fillet for her entree and I had the tuna, both were very good. Service was just as before, very good but not obtrusive.

I keep coming back for the craft cocktails. But the kitchen is excellent. Entrees and side vegetables— especially the sides, with broccoli cooked firmly — not al dente and not mushy — with an interesting sauce to flavor. Did not have chicken entree this time although it is my favorite but the throwback Enchilada in honor of Felix and a pasta dish — kitchen is solid. Gracious as well — with a mistake the manager comped there drink. Turned a negative into a positive. Well done.

The oysters were spectacular. Service great. Phenomenal food and great atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant for a date, outing with friends, or a business lunch.

Gracious staff. Wonderful ambiance — wide steel windows and subway tile give this a European feel with a modern American menu. Old school Houstonians will enjoy their tribute to Felix’s cheese enchiladas as an add on. Soft shell crab appetizer had spice that did not overpower the delicacy of the crab. The Schnitzel was the best I ever had — thin and with a lemon caper sauce and a burnt lemon wedge on the side. Enough for two. Plenty of items to come back for — wanted the duck but maybe next time. Accommodated my gluten free friend with ease.

We had dinner here on Sunday. Sunday is a $29 4 course price fixe meal. The catfish was crunchy and so flavorful. Pork chops were enough to take some home. The blackened redfish was delicate and delicious! Family style sides were unique and prepared to perfection—we had sweet potato au gratin (with purple sweet potatoes), roasted root vegetables & decadent Mac n cheese. The appetizer biscuits with prosciutto, beautiful salad & awesome apple cobbler left us all happy & full. Can’t wait to go back for the chef’s table or oyster bar!!

The food and atmosphere are amazing. We had the oysters on the half shell to start, excellent choices. Great size as well, i am not typically a fan of little oysters. We tried the scallops and the redfish entrees. I cannot tell which was better we can’t decide. The atmosphere is well appointed comfortable and easy to maneuver. The restaurant was full with people wait oy we had no trouble carrying on a conversation and never felt we had to yell over the crowd or music. Loved it.

I like this restaurant for lunch and dinner but until recently had not tried brunch. Having tried it I can now recommend it as the four of us all had good food in a nice setting with very good service. Two of our party had the shrimp omilett, while one had chilaquiles and the other the enchiladas with fried eggs. Nothing to drink save coffee and iced tea and the total, excluding tip, was under $100. I certainly will return

I had lunch here with my son and I really enjoyed this wonderful place! We sat at the bar and enjoyed some great appetizers and drinks. They have a separate seafood bar and another area where you can enjoy a 7 course meal with your own private chef's. I'm looking forward to returning soon! Enjoy!

I come here somewhat regularly. I have become addicted to their burger. That is hardly the only thing worth eating. State of Grace has some delicious food along with a great bar. Sunday was the first time I had brunch here. Our group was so happy and satisfied with our choices. I only wish I could have eaten more.

Loved loved loved the convivial bistro atmosphere- warm, charming, nicely done decor and lighting of this place. Menu is meant to reflect diversity of Houston and it does- lots of different items that somehow tie together and anyone in your party will find something to order- from ribs to steak to shrimp quest fundido to beautiful salads to duck tacos to rice bowl and so on. 2 of our party had great handmade pasta dishes. This makes it sound more mundane than it is- look at the menu, if reading it, it appeals/ the food delivers! and amazing Parker house type rolls- they bring you to start. Those rolls blew us away! Crazy good roasted oysters for starter. Service friendly but not perfect, only tick down. Wasn’t bad just could have been a notch better. Still, if I lived in Houston, this would be a go to, for sure. Very nice bar & top notch cocktails too.

We recently visited this restaurant on a Sunday night. To our surprise, there is a fixed-price 4 course menu with 6 choices of mains. The choices range from fish to pork to steak (with a slight upcharge). I had the pork which was delicious. My husband had the fish which he reviewed as splendid. The Sunday meal was truly a fun somewhat "family style" experience with shared vegetables and salad. The service was attentive. The restaurant is charming. Loved it.

Our first visit to State of Grace for "Sunday Supper", was honestly disappointing. We decided to give them another chance and are glad that we did. Visited on a Saturday evening. The food was some of the most creative i have had with the mix of spices, herbs and sauces, with a particular shout out to the duck carnitas for two. This is hands down, one of the most creative duck dishes i have ever had, It could feed three by the way, so the portions can be large. We did finish the whole dish, it was that good LOL. The salad I had was an interesting take on the classic steak house wedge. The Mahi Mahi was also exceptional, with a giant fresh green salad as a side. As an appetizer we had crab hush puppies with honey butter and powdered sugar on top. Very different and exceptional. Their use of sweet, hot, spicy reminds me of some Asian cuisines, but at the same time very unique and different. Finally, who can leave without dessert. Our table shared a sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and a berry tart. Joshua Martinez, Leah our waitress and the rest of the staff are amazingly friendly and show they really love what they do. We will return. Dinner with drinks and $65 bottle of wine $285 w/tip. They were even handing out fresh made treats as we left the restaurant. Who could resist.

Our party of three visited the restaurant and all tried various dishes. A farm-to-table restaurant with a good variety and a menu that changes often. We all agreed we want to return!

We stopped at State of Grace for a bite to eat after seeing a movie at the River Oaks Theatre. Were taken care of by a slew of folks including Ashley, Chris, Christine and Nicole. We had a dozen of the Alabama oysters (delicious!) and a scallop dish. All wonderful while having nice banter with the servers/bartenders. Before you go to eat at State of Grace (or afterwards), stop at the wonderful bookstore in the same strip center, the River Oaks Bookstore, to browse. A lovely, independent bookstore.

Excelkent service and food! Freshly shucked oyster bar is cool and staff is very accommodating! Best Cacio di pepe in Texas....as good as Italy!

The restaurant title is on point with the definition of the word grace-simple elegance. When you enter the restaurant you immediately feel elevated, but in a casual way. The Oyster Bar area is perfection. Love it! Many types of oysters to sample. Decor is perfection. The main dining area is happening. I love sitting in the banquets and watching the crowd. The bar area is perfect for a drink with a close friend or work acquaintance. Some of the food is a bit heavy for me, but I do love the gumbo. I have eaten much gumbo in my life and the night I tried it...the broth had a unique and addicting flavor to it. Don't touch the Crawfish Beignets unless you are looking for an addiction. OMG! Not good for the waistline and hard to put down. Other dishes that pleased the various crowds with whom I have dined are: Duck Carnitas and the Scallop entree. My son-in-law loved the Twice Fried Chicken.

This is a great sophisticated neighborhood restaurant for those nights when you want great food and service but don't want to drive too far. I love ordering at the bar.

My wife and I had lunch here the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Service, food, ambiance, all was right on. We ordered a variety of oysters to begin along with glasses of house wine. I love trying different varieties of oysters side-by-side. For mains, I had grilled octopus which was among the best I’ve ever had. Very tender. So much so that I assumed they had cooked it sous vide for hours. Turned out, it was a long braise before grilling. My wife had a nice mahi-mahi in butter with turnips. Delicious. A bit pricey but in this case, well worth it. Just go.

It’s been a while since I have had the pleasure of dining here, and let me say, it is still WOW. Food, service, ambiance totally amazing. Dominick, our waiter, was like having your grandmother ply you with food and snacks as a child. Try this, baby. Here’s more, baby. Pat pat pat. So warm, so kind, so,thoughtful. Every morsel on our plates was ahhhh. My niece and I split several dishes and each one was SPECTACULAR. No, I don’t know Ford Fry and no, I don’t work here, but do yourself a big favor, get here ASAP.

Had lunch at the State of Grace yesterday, January 14, 2019 and can honestly say the butter Burger was really nice, brussel sprouts for appetizer a good way to start.

In the likely event you don’t have the stamina to read this entire exposition, here’s the spoiler: overall, State of Grace was the absolute best dining experience my fiancé and I have ever had. I was a little skeptical before we went. The menu is “Texan:” that is, both over-the-top—the drink “book” includes 51 pages devoted to wine, each one vetted with the somm’s written description!—and almost dizzyingly diverse, with inspirations drawn from the Gulf Coast to South Korea to Mexico to Germany. Prices are likewise disorienting, with salads from $8 to $37, house-made pastas from $25 to $49, and entrees ranging from $34 (half-chicken with potatoes) to $159 (should you choose to solo 22 oz. of wagyu strip steak). Many of the dishes are explicit tributes to those that Ford Fry, the aptonymic titan behind this restaurant and twenty others, enjoyed as a boy growing up in Houston. Void of nostalgia for these inside jokes, and rolling my eyes at the caveman description intended to make the restaurant seem simple and approachable (“Stop by. Say hello. Life is about having fun. Being with people you love. And eating good food.”), I wasn’t confident that Mr. Fry could successfully “strike a timeless emotional chord” with “homage to the power of recollection, a place drawn from memory and given a proper frame.” …But I was wrong to doubt. From the hearty dishes to the genuinely sociable service to the warm-toned walls bedecked with deer heads and the fiery open kitchen, this establishment seems designed to satisfy the deepest and most archetypal of human desires: eating rich fresh food in a safe space with good company. It can’t be an accident that the restaurant’s printed postcard references an obscure Grimm fairy tale: dining at State of Grace is like stepping into an alternate world in which wishes are granted and dreams come true. B The aesthetic of State of Grace, conceived by visual storyteller Elizabeth Ingram, is glamorous but rustic, opulent but welcoming, a modern manifestation of Beowulf’s mead-hall. The press lavishes attention on the gilded round oyster altar, a focal point of weekday happy hours (5-6 PM), but the whole place is a mansion of delights. Should you book the chef’s tasting, a multi-course, personalized experience available upon request (!), you’ll be seated at a bar facing the kitchen to watch the spectacle with your back to a wall of wines. Our offshoot nook, with its velvet curtains and oversized booths, was sequestered and cozy. The choice of thick, audio-dampening upholstery and well-spaced tables is a welcome departure from today’s echoey warehouse x cafeteria trend, which too often devolves intimate dinners into bouts of yelling. State of Grace’s spaces feel old-school but not dated. And while you could show up to the restaurant in fine regalia and not feel out of place, it’s explicitly optional; “we want you to be comfortable, first and foremost,” a manager writes, permitting the bedraggled and battle-weary a place at the banquet. A beautiful space is one thing, but I was floored by the genuine positivity radiating from every single employee we encountered, from the valet to the hostess to the runners. I have never felt less like an imposition or a source of wariness, and more like an appreciated guest, than I did on our dinner date. Our waiter, Mitchell, was a quantum leap above even the best waitstaff at other fine dining institutions. His calm demeanor and authentic ability to build rapport relaxed us instantly. He was so intimately familiar with the dishes—including those that had been recently removed from the menu!—I wondered whether he had been personally involved in their creation. And when I admitted with embarrassment that I was taking notes (in a notebook) about our wine, he not only diffused my self-consciousness but revealed his extensive oenological clout by making recommendations for us, writing down our suggestions (!), and even giving us a taste of another wine he thought we’d appreciate. Mitchell’s presence was always perfectly timed, never an imposition. This was not like getting “served” by a waiter, but like sharing an experience with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic friend. All this unparalleled warmth and hospitality might’ve been an astrological windfall, or it might’ve truly been the result of Fry’s uncompromising dedication to building, and heavily incentivizing, teams completely comprised of individuals who share his values (hear his interview on thecurrent.me, among other platforms). The same accommodating spirit certainly extends to his culinary team, which “takes pride in coming up with options” for vegan guests despite a meat-heavy menu, and which defers to the customer’s palate even if conflicts with a culinary vision (entrepreneur.com interview)—an antithesis to the traditional “chef-knows-best” dogma. “It’s just in my nature to not be able to say no,” Fry shrugs. That said, if you do submit to the kitchen’s vision, you will be rewarded. It’s a Willy Wonka wonderland for foodies, a place to indulge in comfort food that is adultified, but not avant-garde enough to be anything other than purely pleasurable. Executive chef Bobby Matos, who has worked at a dizzying array of respected restaurants from New York to California, is as comfortable with oysters as he is with pasta. And the talented pastry chef Chrysta Poulous is to thank for developing the buttermilk honey rolls provided before the meal—appreciated not only because complimentary bread is a rarity today, but because these are seriously delicious, like Hawaiian rolls but meltier, warmer, and and topped with an addictive salted butter. As someone who eats an ungodly amount of foliage, I was impressed by the punchy freshness of the “Greens of the Moment” ($8). Delicate yet sturdy (not a wilted leaf in the pile!), it certainly outperformed bagged lettuce. Paired with a sharp vinaigrette and pickled onion, this salad edged dangerously close to being too uniformly acidic, but was saved by a smattering of rich frizzled onions. I’d still recommend ordering it as a foil beside your heavier main course rather than a standalone appetizer. In contrast, my fiancé reports that the esteemed crab-infused Hush Puppies ($11), despite donning comical boyar hats of powdered sugar, were not too sweet at all, but well-balanced and innovative. He also ordered the Diver Scallops ($45), which were transformed into perfect little savory crème brûlées, silky inside and charred on top. The scallops’ bed seems to change seasonally; this January there were stewed French lentils, a choice I applaud on principle. I adored the Pansotti ($25), frilly ravioli so freshly sauced that they introduced themselves before reaching the table with the heady scent of sizzling butter. Rolled to an ideal thickness, those pasta pouches were chewy outside, rich inside, and bathing in that butter, which was perfectly tempered with lemon, chive, and mild chile. I so appreciated that we were given separate plates upon which to divide up our Texas Pecan Ball ($11)—an oft-overlooked safeguard to prevent the dessert experience from becoming a prisoner’s dilemma. That “ball” was everything we could have wanted in an ice cream sundae, but with better ratios: rich house-made vanilla ice cream, armored in pecans and drowning in a fantastic fudge just bittersweet enough to feel grown-up. To my delight, Mitchell split a decaf Carajillo ($14) into adorable miniature glasses for us. “Don’t try it anywhere else, honey!” our runner warned. “Ours is the best!” Surely a joke; it’s a two-ingredient drink. But given our magical experience, I’m not sure he was wrong. Considering Houston’s embarrassment of culinary riches, I thought there might never be a restaurant I’d choose to revisit instead of exploring someplace new. But unless our experience was atypical—and I so hope it wasn’t!—State of Grace is such a place. It’s where to go to get exactly you want and even what you didn’t even realize you wanted. If your experience is even three-quarters as good as ours, it’ll be well worth your time and `money.

I went with a group of 4 ladies to State of Grace for brunch. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere, it's hard to describe but it feels old world and modern at the same time. We had reservations and were seated right away. The food on the menu is interesting and unusual! We had to ask our waitress a lot of questions to understand what everything was, but I'm not complaining! We enjoyed hearing about dishes we had not had before. We ordered the crab hushpuppies as a starter. They were unusual because they are savory but sprinkled with powdered sugar and have "syrup butter" on the side. We had a couple of orders of "griddle cakes" which were regular pancakes but very light and delicious. Two people shared the Carne Asada and eggs, which was very good, and one person had the Shakshuka which was eggs in a richly flavored tomato sauce. We all enjoyed our food very much! The only criticism I have is the coffee. It is bitter. They need to change vendors. There are so many delicious smooth coffees to buy, there is no reason for coffee that is unpleasant. They can say it's a special blend, blah blah but it's not good. Other than that we loved State of Grace! p.s. they also hand you a freshly made ginger cookie sandwich on your way out - stupendous!

Hosted friends from Australia and a lovely reunion sharing plates from each section of the menu. The wine service was delightful. Ambience - Southern charm in this wonderful city! So perfect!

Unbelievable service, seriously the best in Houston. Food is unique and delicious. Our server (Dominique) was incredible and went above and beyond.

So happy to hear State of Grace opened back up, so I got a reservation for as soon as possible for Friday dinner. Our table started off with State of Grace’s complementary dinner rolls that have a honey butter slab on top that just melts all over the rolls; from trying many rolls from many places I can say these are definitely one of the best and so addicting. Next our table split an order off the roasted oysters witch are definitely worth the price because they were perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavor. For my entree I had the mahi mahi witch was very good, but not the best I have ever had. Our table split the bean salad and the tomatoes as sides, the tomatoes were very good but the bean salad was not worth the purchase. For dessert our table split the peach cobbler, Oh my this was very good and delicious. The cobbler was made with Texas peaches and had a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top witch just melted in your mouth with the peaches and chewy crust. **definitely recommend this dessert if you like peaches

We loved our meal here! The wedge salad was unusual, but delicious. I also had the redfish on the half shell which was outstanding. It was a bit loud, but overall we enjoyed our experience.

I will start with an apology, because I forgot the name of our waitress and she was much more than excellent. It was amazing how she described each dish... such passion in a job is not easy to be seen. Now you can realize how it went our experience, the service is probably one of the best we ever had. At least 3 managers approached our table to make sure we were OK. The food is simply perfect. Every dish was delicious. Very difficult to choose a favorite. Artisan cocktails are amazing too. Innovative. This place is a winner all around.

Must visit restaurant in Houston! From the moment you walk in, you know it's a special place. Very tastefully decorated, great wait staff, very good food (the burger is to die for). Very good value too.. It's a win.

Attended for a business dinner with 3 men. We had both drinkers and non-drinkers in attendance. We each did individual orders with several appetizers. The Texas Blue Crab Finger apps were incredible. We also had the hushpuppies and loved those. For our entree we had the pork chop, burger and gulf snapper. All three were excellent. From the "Share" portion of the menu we ordered the Elote (grilled corn) and Brussel Sprouts. Both were beyond excellent. Service was great and atmosphere was very nice.

A group of us went to State of Grace for Father's Day dinner and had what I thought to e a very nice dinner. The menu is very interesting (different) and the food was good but not great. The service was good, but considering it was Father's Day, I don't think it was as good as it should have been. The staff appeared to be a bit overwhelmed. All things considered I would recommend this restaurant for groups that include all ages.

First, let me say the staff and service are impeccable. The HH leaves a bit to be desired. The HH is basically oysters no other food items are on special. There is a VERY limited menue between 3 and 5 which today included: hush puppies, queso dip and cheese enchiladas. I would not recommend for HH. GREAT service and beautiful interior. The Blue Point Oysters were Fab.

We celebrated my daughter-in-law's birthday at the chef's table. We did combine it with the wine pairing. I was so impressed with Dean and Joey who were our hosts at the grill. The food was exquisite. We started with a fresh fig and mozzarella salad which was followed with a crab and corn soup. The soup topped with two pieces of Ahi was delicious and might have been my favorite of the 7 courses. The other highlight was the lobster on the half shell grilled with a bone marrow butter. About the time we thought we couldn't eat another bite they came out with one of each of the desserts on the menu. If you have the chance to try State of Grace, go for it. The staff and the food do not disappoint.

Quite possibly the most over priced business dinner (planned as a celebration) combined with appalling service and very average food - well, terrible for the price charged. So much wrong with the place that it’s difficult to know where to start. What’s worse was that even when issues were pointed out the service didn’t improve. We arrived at 5:30pm but didn’t get served our entre until after 8pm.

The food here is unique and delicious and they have a good selection of wines. We often eat steak when we go out but we decided to try the chicken and the red snapper. We loved it, the meals were simple but the flavors were amazingly good. Our server was really helpful and made great suggestions. The place got a bit noisy but it is a fun atmosphere and we would definitely recommend.

My husband & I ate an awesome dinner at this place. We got there a little before 6 pm so enjoyed the $1 oysters on the Happy Hour menu. The fresh baked crackers were tasty. The bread with honey butter was delicious. I had the blackened Mahi Mahi with black rice, which was excellent as was my husband’s gumbo. I also had one of their signature beverages, La Parilla, which was flavorful but very strong. However, I was not a fan of the seating we were given. Even though there were quite a few empty tables and we had a reservation, we were seated at a small table with another couple sitting very near who talked loudly throughout the meal. Also, the booth was very low and I felt like I needed a booster seat! Then, as we were leaving, the GM asked us about the meal. We said the food was excellent but the seating was not. He then called me a little later to say he comped our meal, which is above and beyond my expectations. I highly recommend this place as their customer service is first rate!

My husband travels to Houston often but this was my first visit. What a wonderful find. As it turns out, this is a Ford Fry endeavor and he operates restaurants in Atlanta also. The cocktail at the bar had too much ice, not enough liquor--that was the only negative of the entire evening. State of Grace seemed to have a number of business diners that evening. Goose (think "Top Gun") provides top-shelf service to a T, and was knowledgeable. Oh my gosh....duck carnitas with mole sauce. Sauce could only have been better if we had gone to Goose's mother's house! Persimmon upside-down cake...what a creative turn and what a treat. It was accompanied by blood orange sherbet and roasted pistachios. May I please have more to take back the hotel?

Have been here twice now when visiting from England we were so impressed. Nick was one of the best waiters we’ve ever had- very thorough at explaining the menu & made some great recommendations- especially pairing the wine. So impressed we went back for a second time & took 4 friends. Once again everything was absolutely wonderful. Great ambience so now my favourite place in Houston. Excellent place & service above & beyond expectations.

The main room was an old dry cleaners, and it’s amazing what they did with it - someone spent a lot of money on the build out and it shows. Menu was extensive and enticing (heavy on the seafood and raw bar), service was outstanding, and the wine list had some out of the ordinary options (Greek white wine is perfect for this menu). There are 4 oysters available for happy hour price so go before 6pm if you can. Quail was glazed and a little too sweet for my liking, but some may love it. Collard greens with bacon were great. Crudo was good as well. Nice spot.

Had blue point oysters at $1 a piece at happy hour and they were great, as were the sauces. Actual fresh shredded horseradish was a nice touch. Loved my craft drink The Buzz, ice cold with foamy egg white. The hush puppies are a must try! I had the soft shell crab on Texas Toast and it was great. My daughter had the ravioli, and my husband the fried rice and they both also enjoyed their dinners. The service was very good and friendly, we appreciated the menu suggestions. The decor is sophisticated with lots of light. We will be back to try other menu items!

It really was such a beautiful dinner, a very wonderful evening, although I was alone, the impression that this great restaurant gave me was very good.

Excellent service, nice bright location. VERY Interesting menu. Not your typical eggs benedict! Request dining room behind reception for quieter conversation/business lunches. Valet and easy access for slower folks. Construction on W'heimer only a MINOR distraction

We had a nice dinner here while visiting my son in Houston. They have a nice selection of wines and variety of American style foods. Between us we had mahi, scallops, a burger, hushpuppies, collards and an excellent pasta side; all were excellent.

We had a family lunch at the State of Grace and were treated to some remarkable meals. Their chicken & sausage gumbo, the crab fingers and a fantastic lobster role. Great if you like a little spice in your life. Even a simple burger was cooked just right. Our server Mark took good care of us and the GM Matt stopped by to deliver food and chat a bit. Even got one of their famous ginger snap cream cookie on the way out.

Like most of the popular restaurants in town the noise level isn't pleasant. But the food is exceptional. I'd been here at lunch a few times and liked it, but the dinner menu is on a whole other level. Some really tasty and different dishes. Service was friendly but a bit spotty, maybe because of the crowd. Worth a return, though, for the fab food.

A recent Friday night dinner was the occasion to make my first visit to State of Grace in the River Oaks area. Once I got past the massive construction zone in front of the shopping center, the rest of the evening was most enjoyable. The interior was very pleasing to the eye, some noise, but never too much to restrict a normal conversation. Their menu offers some great choices. I chose the Pork Schnitzel. This menu item (along with several others according to the wait staff) was more than enough to share. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable with the menu and wine lists. I found no issues with the service, quality of food or wine selections. I only wish restaurants of this caliber and creativity were more common down I-10 west about 2.5 hours. I will certainly add State of Grace to my list of Houston go-to places for dinner. Valet parking is available and I would recommend making a reservation.

I live out of state and came to Houston to celebrate my daughter finishing her program at Baylor College of Medicine. I read online that this restaurant was perfect for celebrations, so I called a week ahead and booked a table for five - making a point of letting them know about our special occasion. When we arrived they had the entire parking lot marked off with orange cones so you had to valet. The lot was empty and we could easily have parked ourselves - which we prefer whenever possible - so it felt kind of tacky. Once inside, the ambience, food and service were all ok - no serious complaints - but we certainly weren't wowed, and there was absolutely no mention of our special event. As the host for our party, I felt very let down, and wished I'd made a better choice. If you're celebrating - this is not the place.
Great and unusual food
A really nice place, memorable in its decor, menu style, professional service and ambience. We enjoyed the various fish dishes all done with a twist. A must in Houston.
