Delicious Food

By juliebfromindy |

We stayed at The Wit and ate here for brunch. I had a magnificent fried chicken sandwich with a salad and my husband had biscuits and gravy. The sandwich was just perfectly fried and so juicy. My husbands biscuit was large and fluffy with a ham gravy as he ask for ham slices with his meal. Location is nice inside and staff is very attentive. Location is handicap accessible with a nice variety on the menu for all diets.

Excellent breakfast choices

By wendymunz |

I stay here frequently and really enjoy the breakfast at State and Lake. The ricotta toast and avocado toast are healthy and great tasting options hard to find at other restaurants.

Relaxed atmosphere & friendly staff

By Mike W |

Relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Ordered from the breakfast menu. The food was excellent quality. Especially recommend the steak and eggs. Would definitely recommend this place and revisit given the opportunity.

Enjoyable Dinner!

By LindaTours |

We had dinner on a Friday night prior to attending the theater downtown. We had originally wanted to try the aged soft cheddar pretzel when we looked at their menu ahead of time. Guess what they ran out of when we got there.....the pretzel!! Luckily that was the only disappointment because we really enjoyed the atmosphere and the dinner. Service was also spot on. We had the local lettuce salad to start, it was excellent and the fried buckwheat was unique. I had an excellent cocktail with whiskey and apple cider. For dinner we tried a burger, a roasted chicken and a fish special. All our entrees were excellent. I'd definitely go back in hopes for trying that pretzel next visit.

Menu more limited than shown on trip advisor

By TheOpsDoctor |

Overall I was happy with the experience. The menu was more limited than I thought, but they had a burger that was good. Ice cream cake desert was pretty average. Not worth the 14. Would go back. Service was good.

Average food and ok service.

By Leejc223 |

We ate here on the first night in Chicago due to lots of places being closed on the bank holiday. The menu isn’t that comprehensive, but ok nonetheless. We ordered a starter which tasted good and the portion was on. The most disappointing thing was our mains. My wife’s meal came with bread which had some mouldy bread. The waiter didn’t offer to replace it, so I subsequently complained to the captain who removed it from the bill. Overall the food wasn’t great apart from the above experience, we won’t go back as fast food is better. I think if you need somewhere to eat and your not fussy then here is ok.

Great breakfast and dinners!

By N4685WEN |

We stayed at the Wit the weekend of 9/21/2018 on the recommendation of a co-worker and we were NOT disappointed at all! We only ate at the State and Lake Chicago Tavern which is in the building for 2 breakfast's and 1 dinner, even though there are also a ton of local restaurants and eatery's around to try. The portions for breakfast and dinner are huge and you will not go away hungry. We had the steak and eggs, the spinach egg white omlet, the malted pancakes (there were 3 of them), and the chilaquiles for our breakfasts and the pork schnitzel, the salmon and the 72hour short rib for dinner. We left every time with left overs! The service is excellent and we can't wait to dine there again!

Very nice

By _lmquillinan |

We did have one drink here. It seemed very nice. We also ate breakfast here. They don't have a big menu but was very tasty.

Good food - attentive service

By kelliec812 |

Thought of walking right out the door when I saw the fake animal skull on the wall. Then, I looked around and realized, they just need an interior decorator. They had accents from the Southwest, the Midwest, the 70's, and Marshall's bargain art basement. Luckily, I was only there for a quick bite before a show. And, despite the decor...the food was actually great. The added bonus was a very attentive and courteous staff.

Brunch is Great at State and Lake

By Kelli | Whiskied Wanderlust |

Stopped in for brunch to meet family staying at the Wit hotel above State and Lake and ended up being pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the friendly service. Our server didn't mind that we sat the table way beyond finishing the meal and was attentive the entire time. As a local, I will definitely be back!

Service not so good

By D J |

We arrived at 10:30 pm after a show. The place was about half full at the time. We were more interested in the food and drink rather than the entertainment and social aspect. We placed our order and waited 30 or more minutes for two items from their small plate menu. By the time we left it had gotten busy and my second drink took too long to enjoy it. If you are hungry after the typical dinner hour skip it. If you are looking for a place to drink and laugh and enjoy the acoustic performer, those people seemed to be getting what they paid for.

Nice. Convenient.

By Echelon248 |

We stayed at TheWit hotel so this place was a convenient dining option the day we checked out. The chicken and waffles were good, as was the apple butter for the waffles. My husband had the steak and eggs, which he said he enjoyed. As most restaurants do, this place has free coffee refills. It was a good choice. If staying at the adjoining hotel again, I'd probably dine here again. Otherwise, I'd likely venture out, especially hearing of some other great breakfast spots in the area.

There are thousands of places to eat in Chicago and this is one of the best

By Regkv |

So, 6pm and time to eat and there is the Wit hotel next to us offering the the State and Lake Tavern. A quick look at the menu and in we go. We were quickly shown a table, offered a glass of water and presented with the drinks and a food menu. My wife just wanted a coke but I fancied a beers from one of the local micro breweries. The waitress was a great help in helping me make what turned out to be a good choice. A burger and fish tacos were ordered and we were soon enjoying the food. My wife is convinced the is one of the best burgers she has ever had and still talks about it. The fish tacos similarly were different but delicious. After another couple of other superb beers the bill arrived and was less than many places presenting a much inferior offering. When in Chicago eat and drink here, you will not be disappointed.

Decent food need to upgrade their house wines

By E6398ATkristinh |

I know they are house wines for a reason but that doesn't mean that you can't find good quality wine with a fair price.

Great evening stop

By Tania D |

We had a burger (OMG!) and cocktails late in the evening. There was a live band and the atmosphere was really nice.

Excellent food and service!

By ToddAndJenB |

We ate here because we were staying at theWit and State and Lake is connected to the hotel. We went for Sunday brunch, and it was amazing. We had Steak and Eggs, Chicken and Waffles, and the kid's 201 Breakfast. Everything was great. The service was quick and friendly. We will definitely eat here again the next time we are in Chicago.

Good breakfast

By DawninDallas |

Fast and friendly service at breakfast. Good basic choices, the yogurt parfait is a nice starter, decaf coffee is also good.

Breakfast is delish! Chicken/waffles or pecan french toast!

By 2beans2000 |

Located in TheWit hotel in The Loop, State and Lake Tavern ha an eclectic menu for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. All three meals are great. I enjoyed breakfast this morning with my family and we did a calorie splurge with chicken and waffles-the chicken was soooo tender and the waffles were so fluffy and flavorful, PERFECT! We also shared the pecan maple banana French toast which blended confort flavors beautifully. Previously, we’ve enjoyed the bucatini with marinara for lunch (delicious) and the tavern burger with bacon (perfect for sharing). The food and service are both excellent. The location is great, right in the Loop and a short walk to Millennium Park. Enjoy! P.S. try staying at The Wit Hotel... it’s wonderful. Great rooms, fabulous location, wonderful service, wonderful beds, and the best people ever!

Great place to eat before heading to Chicago Theater

By Motherlof1 |

Before our concert at the Chicago Theater we opted to have a bit to eat and it didn't disappoint. We had the Burger and Short ribs, both were exceptional The ingredients and flavors were amazing. The shrimp and grits appetizer was beyond delicious. I suggest you get a few items and share, because everything is so good. I had the cucumber Moscow Mule, which as refreshing on a very hot June day. The place was crowded but the energy and ambiance was so much fun. I have been here 2 times before and both times, exceptional. After seeing an amazing Brandi Carlise, we opted for a drink at the rooftop bar, at the Wit, where this restaurant is inside it.

Impromptu Evening of fun at State and Lake Chicago Tavern

By Gabriela A |

I’m a Chicago native/local that decided to kill some time at the State and Lake Chicago Tavern during rush hour on a Friday afternoon. I wasn’t expecting to have such an enjoyable experience! The bartenders Efrain & Miguel were very welcoming, conversational and incredibly well versed mixologists. One drink turned into a whole evening spent at the bar having great conversations with staff and other patrons. Efrain was very mindful that I was there by myself and checked in with me to make sure that I was doing alright and safe. Above and beyond! 5 star service, drinks and atmosphere.

When you see Yolk on the other- detour here!

By Rainmaker77 |

When you see Yolk on the other side of the street- detour to this superior choice! Fantastic Presentation outstanding, quality equally so, service perfect. And like other restaurants nearby no rush to push you out!

Upscale tavern

By Nancy Z |

We were town for a play and stayed next door at The Wit. You can enter through the hotel which is handy for Chicago winters. The menu was more upscale than I expected. My husband had a salad and the seared bone-in pork chop which was BIG and he enjoyed. I ended up going vegetarian with the butternut squash salad and the broccoli risotto. The flavors were quite good, not just a mashup of various veggies. We both had a glass of wine as well. My only disappointment was that the waitress seemed tired and just going through the motions on a Friday night.

Wanted to host a private event, couldn't get anyone to give me a call back

By Amber R |

Not sure what is happening here, but management needs to do some training with their host staff (and themselves). I called 5 days ago to ask about a private event. No one was available so I left a message. The person I spoke to was very confused about the entire interaction and had to ask me to repeat myself several times. I have not gotten a single phone call or email in response. I just called again to try and speak with someone, and was told there wasn't a manager on site (at 1pm on a Tuesday? no one is there to manage lunch service?). Host told me they would transfer me to the manager's extension, but it wasn't working, so I was given the direct line. Tried calling and it's just a busy signal. So, I guess you don't want my business of open bar and food for 50pp? How do you not respond to a potential guest who wants to spend several thousand dollars with you?

Late night dinner and breakfast

By sunlovr2 |

Trendy little food menu after 10:00. Never had a bacon wrapped hot dog with mayo and guacamole! DELICIOUS!

2nd Review - Anniversary Stay

By N4685WEN |

During our 2nd stay at The Wit, we, of course, had to eat at State and Lake again and we were not disappointed. We had two (2) dinner's there. The pork schnitzel is absolutely devine and "The Tavern" burger is simply "PERFECT". Even if you eat at the bar instead of at a table you will not be disappointed. The beer and wine select is also great. We look forward to eating there again.

Great Breakfast Choice

By GMalmzy |

Attentive service. Unique breakfast menu. Loved the Avocado toast with poached eggs. Recommend sitting by the window - great people watching during breakfast.

Reservations taken for Sunday brunch!!

By Scott M |

The fact that we could make a reservation for brunch downtown was key! Service by Luis was great as was our food: The caramel pecan toast with berries was luscious, the chicken and waffles was huge and comforting. Denver omelet with potatoes was standard as was the Benedict. Very pleasant surroundings connected to the Wit Hotel, convenient to strolling by the river and Michigan Avenue.

Run of the mill; slack service

By FEArliss-Books |

My sister and I met here for dinner so that I wouldn't have to travel again once I'd arrived after a long flight. The food was only adequate and the service was very slow and fumbling - including dropping one of our dishes on the floor.

Typical Tourist Tavern

By John O |

Listen, there's nothing wrong with State and Lake. The location is very convenient, service was great, and drinks were good. Prices? High, but what do you expect for eating in one of the highest rent districts in Chicago? You're going to pay through the nose for that beer or plate of nachos. At least you get a lot of them. The music? Well, if you *really* like corporate Country, then you'll love this place. If you don't, you'll be doing as we did and paying your check, leaving a nice tip, then moving on to greener pastures.

nice bar

By notesfork |

Stopped by the bar for a quick beverage and it was very pleasant. A good mixture of cocktails at the bar- I highly recommend the "Drunken Lumberjack"..one of their specialty cocktails.

Not good

By PAtravelingguy |

This wasn’t good. Don’t recommend.. not all the food was served at once. The waitress was nice and said she was waiting on the kitchen. We were the only table and there were five people at the bar. Pork chop was dry and the beans in the vegetable were slimey. The broccoli wasn’t served with the meal and came out when I was almost done with the chop. Don’t recommend

Ok, not great.

By William S |

Food was good. Bar service was slow. Not enough restrooms. They only have two individual restrooms for men and women. Restaurant was not that full, but the pine for women was over 10 minutes.

Nice relaxed pub style

By RoteFuchs |

State and Lake is in no way gourmet but it is a nice relaxed pub style restaurant with a limited menu and great beer. The staff is nice and friendly and the food is tasty but heavy. A nice place to go for a relaxed meal.

A GREAT PLACE FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH OR DINNER

By BATMAN & CATWOMAN |

The State and Lake Chicago Tavern is named for the actual streets where it is located. It is attached to the Hilton's The Wit Hotel. It is walking distance to the Riverwalk. It you want good food or a quick bite there are many choices. Try the eggs Benedict for breakfast.

Excellent

By Albert K |

We ate several meals here during our recent stay at The Wit. We found the service and food to be outstanding. Friendly, attentive staff and manager on all visits. The Bolognese dish was masterfully prepared. Breakfasts were quite good as well. This is hotel dining at its finest. Kudos. We look forward to our next visit(s).

The breakfast was very good, but expensive.

By Wanda L |

I had the choice of eggs and meat, with potatoes and toast. I thought the meal was very good. I didn't get the toast, because I'm gluten intolerant. My daughter had the egg white omelet and she thought it was just "okay". She didn't finish it, which isn't normal for her. The potatoes are the best part of breakfast. It's a little pricey. Our total for two, with tax was over $50. It was a convenient place to eat, since we were staying at theWit. The night before, we ordered the pub fries and a big pretzel. I enjoyed the pub fries and dip, but my daughter, didn't care for the pretzel, which meant, she ate my fries.

Amazing dinner close to Chicago Theater

By Stacy L |

We had an amazing dinner in a short amount of time prior to going to the Chicago Theater just up the street. The food is outstanding! They combine amazing ingredients that work nice to compliment each other to create one of kind tastes! Great selection of beer and cocktails as well!

After work date night

By Monica1124 |

My husband and I had an impromptu date night and happened upon the State and Lake tavern from an internet search of restaurants nearby. We sat at the bar and I had one of there highlighted cocktails which was very yummy. We ordered appetizers - fresh pretzel with cheese and sauces and the scallop appetizer. My husband loved the scallops and I liked the pretzel so much we ordered two. We did not try any of the entrees but they looked very good. The staff and bartender we had were great. The manager even came around to make sure we were good. The price is a bit higher since it's in the Wit hotel building. We had a good experience.

Go somewhere else

By merrill2014 |

Arrived at 5pm for light dinner. The happy hour menu the hostess gave said it offered daily beer and ciders on tap or can. My friend asked the waiter about the happy hour beer special and the waiter responded by saying he wasn't sure what the daily special was for the day and that he didn't think there were any specials for cans. I asked him if he would recommend any GF ciders, he said, that the strawberry basil hefeweizen was good. I asked him again if it was GF to which he responded "yes". I ordered it anyways because I was thinking that that company was offering something new. Thank goodness I checked because in bold, on the front of the can, it states "wheat ale brewed...". I brought that to the waiter's attention and told him my friends will just drink it. I wanted to order their tavern burger and asked the waiter if they had GF buns. The waiter grimaced and responded "I don't think so, I'd have to 'dig' for one downstairs". I decided to order it without the bun. My friend ordered their carrot soup. The utensil set on the table does not come with spoons. Apparently when you order soup at this restaurant you have to ask for a spoon. The waiter was no where in sight so we asked the hostess. It took a while for the spoon to arrive. Nothing about my experience here impressed me at all. Couldn't tell you my waiters name because when he first arrived at my table, instead of greeting us by saying hello and telling us his name, the first thing out of his mouth was,"sooo, whada ya want?"

Good food great service

By Pat H |

We had breakfast. They have veggie sausage (a pleasant surprise) and many options. The service was excellent.

Bachelorette Party Aftermath

By Denae M |

The morning after a bachelorette party we came across State and Lake Tavern. We were looking for a place near our hotel and saw people eating brunch outside. We decided to stop and eat. They were able to seat us right away and we had a party of 6. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. The bloody Mary's were outstanding. The hostess and waiter were both awesome. Atmosphere was very classy but we never felt like we were out of place. Will definitely be back to visit!

Great brunch

By tobycc |

So many great brunch choices. They had room for us with no waiting, friendly helpful staff, good coffee, delicious food with many choices. Everything looked great but I had the chicken and waffles, delicious. Slightly upscale but not too much.

Amazing breakfast on way out of town!

By Diane N |

Stopped by for breakfast on way out of town. Delicious!! Avacado toast was large and filling. Hubby got lox and bagel and cream cheese was actually ricotta with delicious seasonings. So good! And the bacon!! REAL bacon. Crispy and yummy.

Family night at the Chicago Theater

By 898pattyb |

Not impressed. They did not have our first two choices of wine from their menu. We ordered the mussels appetizer which came quickly but with no spoon - and our waitress never returned so we ate with our fingers. For dinner we ordered 3 burgers - one with bacon and risotto. This took quite a while to come out. Burgers came - none with bacon but with different cheeses and not cooked as requested. Risotto was bland- I only ate half and did not bring any home. On a good note they offered us a discount for the burger mistakes, but instead of taking 10# off of our bill, they added it to our bill! Thank goodness we were paying attention. I would not go there again.

great breakfast

By glschles |

stayed two nites at the witt hotel. get breakfast here. highly recommend the burnt end hash with poached eggs. fabulous. good fresh orange juice. good service.

Weird

By Sarah A |

They have a good selection of drinks. I recommend the tavern mimosa. When we got there the waitstaff made us feel a little uncomfortable and the menu was not what we were expecting. We stopped in for drinks and lunch and were disappointed, we each ordered a drink and left.

Great Breakfast

By PNC-Law |

Arrived to the hotel before check in time....had breakfast in the Tavern...Eggs Benedict was very good!! Very nice atmosphere.

Lame as can be for Veggie Options

By tamar f |

This place looked ok at first glance. The menu is attractive and has some nice sounding vegetarian options, but as the plates came, we were more than disappointed. The cob salad looked like it had been just taken out of a plastic bag: the lettuce, (not grilled) corn, mini tomatoes, and cucumber- I bet you could get a better salad at Walgreens. The broccoli with melted cheese was lame as well, as I could have made broccoli taste better at home every time. The beers are expensive and the service is just ok. Sad to pay that much for a place with lesser quality than some of their fast-food neighbours.

Terrible Customer Service and Marginal Food

By SKWalton |

Had the misfortune of booking a large party here last week. Marginal food and terrible customer service, and I'll never do business here again. Many alternatives are available in the area. Take your business elsewhere.

Great bar and excellent staff. Food ok but a bit expensive for quality.

By Rob W |

Great bar for Doris and having out in a group. Bar staff are excellent and very efficient. Food menu is ok but expensive for what you get but no different to most other hotel lobby bars. Breakfast good.

Mixed review

By Punky05 |

Met business colleagues here for breakfast two days in a row because I was staying at theWit and had read so many good things about it. The first day, the food was only average and the service (from multiple servers) was so attentive that it was almost disruptive to our conversation. The second day was better and our dishes were wonderful and the service just right. One thing that I do sincerely appreciate about everything at theWit - including this restaurant - is the keen focus on customer service and making things right. The servers were happy, smiling, and friendly. For that reason alone - despite the mixed experiences - I have given them a 4 out of 5 and think this restaurant is worth a try. It looks like it may be even better at dinner.

Dinner with family

By Ramona C |

Great ambiance, good food with great staff making your time spent in this restaurant good for talk & appreciate food, drinks & conversation. Highly recommended.

Bartender turned dismissive when we asked for the happy hour menu

By Lucy C |

Bartender was quick to greet me and my friends when we sat down at the bar but then when we asked to see the happy hour menu his demeanor changed and for the rest of our visit we had to call him over to get any service. After our first drink and appetizer we gave up on the service and moved on to a different restaurant where we spent nearly 250 bucks on food and drink.

Great breakfast for great price

By tjmm1985 |

Had the citrus yogurt with fresh fruit and amazing granola. This is a portion easy enough for two people. Many layers of flavor with fruit you would not imagine being paired up. The brioche french toast with meat sides also a must. The coffee is from Sparrow roastery and hidden Chicago favorite. Give this location at the Wit a try!

OK, But!

By Raphael L |

We went there as a group after a business organization meeting. ‘Menus were well structured with three salads, entrees and desserts. While the food was good, glasses of water were whisked away and the key lime pie was a pre wrapped dessert ( not too classy), After we got over that, there was a major delay in processing individual bills. While the salad and pasta entree were good, the place really lends itself to singles, dives, and triplets or four tops. Brand that you are really pushing this restaraunt as they add used to inventory turns.

Easy Bar Food within theWit Hotel

By pbvh |

Straightforward bar food as part of theWit Hotel situated on North State Street close to the river. Service could have been better.

Inconsistent

By Cecilia S |

I've been here several times. At lunch I've gotten some interesting dishes and the service was strong. But I was here for breakfast/brunch this weekend and I had a decent brunch but the service was not strong. I ordered eggs over medium with english muffin and bacon. I ordered the bacon burned and it came not even crisp. Not the end of the world, but I don't love bacon that is chewy. The english muffin was very good, but when I picked up one of the small jars of preserves (individual servings) it had been opened. No one came back to the table for more than five minutes, so I took one of the jars of preserves off the set up table next to me (sorry). They forgot to bring me butter, but did bring it about 10 minutes into the meal when the waiter came back to see if everything was ok. I didn't have a spoon for my coffee so I took one off the table next to me (sorry incoming diners...my bad). The coffee was good and I got a to-go cup at the suggestion of my server. It was a good breakfast, but not prepared to what I had asked for. Not the end of the world, but the service could have been stronger. Staff was very friendly but the service wasn't what I'd expect for a $20 breakfast.

The east corner table easily accommodated all 7 of our party and was more private and away from the crowd.

By Alicia M |

The restaurant was busy but Fernando our server was very attentive. The food was excellent, the portions were very good and the price was very reasonable depending on your entrée.

Breakfast

By Heather J |

Enjoyed the restaurant but would have liked to have seen healthier options for breakfast. The Oatmeal tasted like it had a lot of cream. It was good just not as healthy as it could be. My daughters biscuits and gravy had celery in it which she did not like but I tried it and loved it. Great location attached to our hotel. We have had dinner here before and enjoyed it so we thought we would try breakfast.

Lunch, dinner & cocktails YUM!!

By Keloser |

Stopped in for a light late lunch and was delighted by the atmosphere, friendly attentive wait staff. I ordered the parsnip soup and it was awesome, so good I almost licked my bowl! I convinced my husband to go back the next night for dinner. I again ordered the soup. We sat at the bar and again the staff offered stellar service and quick delivery of our drinks. I highly recommend getting the soup as I've never had such a mix of flavored, roasted fennel, orange purée and marinated octopus. The presentation of this soup was delightful. I plan to return again with friends.

Exceptional Customer Service

By Thalassophile |

We were in Chicago for St. Patrick’s Day weekend. We visited State and Lake Chicago Tavern on Friday & Saturday night while guests at theWit hotel. We sat at the bar & our service was exceptional. On Saturday night the bartender even remembered our order from the previous evening! The dessert was outstanding & our drinks were delicious. Every staff member at State and Lake Chicago Tavern goes above & beyond to ensure your experience is flawless. Highly recommend!

Great breakfast spot in The Wit hotel

By u2fan56 |

We had breakfast multiple times during our recent stay at The Wit in Chicago. The tavern is connected and you are able to use your breakfast voucher at the restaurant. The menu has good selection of various entrees. Recommend the frittata or egg white omelette. Good coffee and drink menu. Good service and clean.

Great cocktails and service.

By Steven Y |

Went for happy hour with a few co-workers. Bartenders are EXCELLENT. Really good service and cocktails. Located in the lobby of the Witt Hotel so it was a convenient place to meet for an after work drink.

Less than outstanding experience

By NOLA |

Service was ok. Product was ok, but nothing was outstanding. I went because of the ratings. Way over rated. Way over priced. It is not your typical tavern. It poses as a high end "tavern". Food was not great either. Not impressed.

Excellent service

By Jend420 |

Unique brunch choices. We had a duck confit omelette and a ham and artichoke omelette. Delicious, even the toast was thick. And the coffee was rich. Jorge was so friendly and gave us recommendations for our day.

Excellent Dinner Out

By dunadan |

Our family, in town for a week's holiday, had a fine dinner at State and Lake. The environment has the feel of a high-end pub, with a large bar, dark wood, and low and atmospheric lighting. The food was excellent. I had a plate of short ribs that were superb, accompanied by an excellent cider from Michigan, while my wife and daughter opted for burgers, also very good. The house fries were delicious, and enough for sharing (whether they wanted to or not! :). Dinner was topped off by a trio of amazing desserts: an Austria pancake, the peanut butter skillet cookie, and a lime cheesecake. The pancake I had never heard of, but once I heard the description, I had to try it--and was glad I did. Three dense slices of thick pancake covered in a sweet sauce with nuts and raisins. The skillet cookie was amazing to behold, and my daughter's eyes lit up when it arrived, with its huge Hershey's Kiss in the middle of a large cookie. My wife devoured her cheesecake, a lovely construction and a sight to behold. This was one of our best dinners in Chicago, and we'd happily return when we are in town next.

Gastropub food,and bar.

Cosy atmosphere with attentive service and tasty food. A cold Monday night in Chicago, it was a very welcome haven.

Excellent Meals and Service

By Kenny0654 |

This restaurant is located in the lobby of theWit Chicago hotel, where I was staying. I had two dinners, two breakfasts, and one round of late-night snacks and drinks here. All the food was excellent and portions were generous. The pork schnitzel tasted wonderful, and my only qualm was the large portion of fennel on the plate (not a favourite). No qualms about the salmon, which was tender, moist and flavourful, with a beautiful crisp finish on top. The smoked trout spread was a real winner of an appetizer, so I naturally had it more than once -- although something a bit more characterful than plain saltine crackers would suit it better. At breakfast, the coffee was very good, and the Denver omelet was wonderful. The Tavern potatoes at breakfast are made fresh and have a wonderful fried-crust finish. Service at all times was first-rate. The team here works as a team, and all aspects of service are covered with timely attention to detail and a friendly smile. Great restaurant!

Stopped in for a drink and quick snack. Felt the service could of been a bit better. The food was ok. May have hit it at a bad time. Will check it out again

Restaurant or disco?

By Karen P |

What a disappointment. We booked after finding favorable TripAdvisor reviews and Totally disliked our experience. We had fish tacos and a burger and both were mediocre. You' think for $11 they could put a few fries on the plate with the burger. The service was lackadaisical. The music was so loud we thought we were in a disco and this was in early evening. To top It off, we got an e-mail today from TripAdvisor today saying we hadn't honored our reservation. Apparently the hostess was too inefficient to check us in. We won't be back.

Great place

By DCCR336 |

I love this place. The drinks are great and the food is wonderful. Only had breakfast here. Love the spin they put on their food. This is a wonderful place to meet up with some friends for happy hour.

Restaurant n bar at theWit

By bruce p |

This is a great restaurant and bar on the ground floor of The Wit Hotel. Service is extremely friendly. . The food is extremely good though. There's not a huge variety of menu options. The Ambiance of this place is very upscale. Nice. Little on the pricey side button definitely not the most expensive. Highly recommend this place

Wow! and Yum!

By Edikochan |

Normally restaurants inside hotels are a disappointment. State and Lake was just the opposite and it provided room service for the hotel so it meant delicious and interesting meals in your room if you choose.

Good not Great

By KPboulder |

Food was ok, thought the menu was a bit limited. Small restaurant and food seems very fresh and well considered. My friend has salmon, he liked it. His butter lettuce salad was really nice. I had a pasta dish, liked it also. Perhaps the food wasn't "great", but it was good. If at the hotel across the street I would go again.

Interesting Breakfast Menu, not for the picky

By Jeff F |

Ate breakfast here twice as part of our stay at The Wit (thanks Hilton Honors!). Service was good to great, the waiter remembered us from the previous day, too. The menu is a bit on the different side... avocado toast, bagel and lox with capered cream cheese, crab benedict... but was tasty. My 14 year old ended up with the fruit plate both days because nothing on the menu appealed to her while the 15 year old tried the avocado toast on day 1 (to her dismay) and then fell back to the standard Honors continental on day 2. I enjoyed my crab benedict and steak and eggs, though. A solid 4, but if you have picky eaters amongst you, it might not be the best choice to start the day.

Really good Salmon

Salmon was cooked to perfection. Not many gluten free options but food is really good. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good meal in Chicago.

Inside is nicer than the outside :)

Delicious burger… split it with my boyfriend. Good call, it was a sizable burger. Great atmosphere and friendly staff!

Excellent service and the food is outstanding!

By Adrian L |

My wife and I took our two pre-teen girls to dinner at State & Lake, the restaurant located at the lobby of The Wit hotel. The food and service were exceptionally good. This is the second time at visit this restaurant and again I've had a wonderful experience with the food and service. My wife and I shared a Cobb Salad and a an 8oz Wood Grilled burger (FANSTASTIC!) Everything so fresh and tasty I haven't had a burger that good in a long time. For an appetizer we had the Wood Grilled chicken wings! Also an excellent choice. So tasty. Everyone at the Wit is very friendly, I was very impressed with their level of detail and friendliness. This hotel might very well be our next choice.

Pre theatre dinner - very good

By Tonypose |

We had a reservation to eat dinner here before attending theatre at the Chicago Theatre. This restaurant is very convenient for that as the theatre is one block away. We found the service here to be pleasant and without fault. The food was very good from the salmon to the strip steak. Very, very, tasty. There is a nice bar here as well to partake of some libations. TVs at the bar. It was busy but service was quick. Lots of menu choices.

Good Food Great Service

By Elizabeth P |

The food was delicious, the atmosphere was charming. Jonathan was helpful with his recommendations, which made choosing dinner so much easier. He was also quite knowledgeable about which drinks were tasty and which ones to skip upon conversating with my husband and me. Thank you, Jonathan,.

WOW... 17$ per glass house wine???

By MarciaB10 |

I chose this place because we were going to the Chicago Theater.. We weren't looking for anything fancy, just a quick dinner prior to the show. I noted the review just before me about having a better house wine.. but went for it anyway.. I'm not a wine snob, I just don't drink beer, so ordered a house Cabernet. It was ok.. until I saw the bill! Holy cow $17 per glass for a average at best pour? I know we are downtown, but this isn't Mortons! The restaurant has the atmosphere of a corner neighborhood bar. The food prices were average. Unfortunately I didn't see the cost until after we had left.. my husband paid the bill and gave me the receipt after we were out the door...otherwise I most certainly would have questioned the cost. I am not sure if the waiter gave me something other than I ordered for significantly more cost or their house wine is $17.00 per glass, but either way I don't like to be ripped off and will not go back here.

Not bad

By John R |

Typically I find hotel restaurants expensive and either really good or mediocre to bad. This place is fairly priced to eat at and the food is pretty good. With so many places to eat in Chicago near this hotel why would you but if it is cold and rainy you will be happy. The staff is friendly too.

Chicago Treat

By Gary H |

We were staying at the River Hotel just a couple of blocks from this Tavern. Stopped in for dinner one night. At 5:45 or so it was not busy at all, and easy to get a table. Service was very good. Food was better. Relatively muted noise, so easy to carry on a conversation. Close to the river, hotels and the loop.

Amazing breakfast!!

By Patshe02 |

We went for breakfast and were blown away by the food experience and service! The hollandaise was superb as was the warm garlic peerWill definitely be back!!

modern delicious food

By Mandy M |

buzzy place bit too many screens with baseball on. menu was exciting. crab cakes were really delicous and the blackened brussell sprouts with dates honey and manchego were to die for. partner had chicken and daughter the burger and all were good. the apple tart for dessert was ok but not great. recommend it

Quick continental breakfast

By Bruce I |

Very limited review today. In Chicago for business and staying at TheWit Double Tree. Continental breakfast is included for Hilton Gold. It's perfect. Bagel, orange juice, coffee with very friendly and efficient service. This breakfast staff is wonderful.

Great breakfast experience

By Mom529 |

Strolling near the Chicago River on a Sunday morning, we found this restaurant on Open Table. So glad we did! The server could not have been nicer, the food was healthy and delicious, and we had a nice chat with the people at the next table. My husband enjoyed eggs, toast, breakfast potatoes and chicken sausage. I had wonderful steel cut oatmeal topped with mascerated apples and cranberries, and a side of fruit. It was refreshing to find not the tired chunks of melon, but blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and pineapple. Enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

Great place for night in

By John A |

With the weather not so nice outside and staying at theWit (DoubleTree) Hotel, I decided to have my small dinner at the bar in the hotel restaurant/pub. I was alone and sat at the bar although there was room for a table. They have a couple of smallish TVs at the bar showing a college football game and while there was quite a few people there, the noise was not overwhelming, which was nice. The bartenders serving at the bar provide very good service, providing good suggestions when needed and getting the orders in efficiently. I had a couple of appetizers because I wasn't really that hungry. The lentil soup was excellent, nice texture and a hint of spice. I also had the charred broccolini, which came with smoked scallops, garlic and a few other things. It tasted very nice. It's not the best place, but pretty solid, good food and very good service.

Always good - any time of day!

By Michelle N |

I usually eat hear at least one time when I travel to Chicago. It's near the office, but more than that it's always good. Love breakfast, lunch & dinner (and especially after shopping late on State St.). Laid back atmosphere and just good food. Fav. is Kale salad and their version of wings (served in a cast iron skillet - baked not fried). Yum! When I stay at theWit I always get room service from here too - its my treat to myself after a long day or event. They've been consistently delicious for the last 2.5 years I've been traveling to Chicago and eating here.

Decent hotel bar - close a little early - great chips and cheese pimento dip

By GMB-001 |

Nice bar, good atmosphere. A little over priced and close too early each night (around 10 or 11 pm each night), but their home-made potato chips and cheese pimento dip is the only reason I still come here.

Great Late Night Choice for Dinner in the Loop

By mistersalty |

We chose to eat here because it was late and a lot of places in Chicago close at 10:00 pm. The roasted brussel sprouts and cauliflower appetizers were outstanding. The salmon was perfectly cooked and came with a delicious cranberry relish and sauteed kale. Service was friendly and attentive, and the food came out very quickly. It is open until 2 a.m. on the weekends so is a popular spot for the late night crowd, but the staff can handle the volume. The only downside is that it is kind of pricey, but it's definitely worth checking out when you are in the Loop area of Chicago.

Great Food and Beer Selection – but Terrace Needs Some Attention

By travel.pravDA |

Had a great meal at State and Lake Chicago Tavern! The food was fresh and flavorful — we especially enjoyed the sandwiches and burgers. The lobster soup was a standout — rich, delicious, and perfectly seasoned. They also have an impressive variety of draught beers to choose from, which was a big plus. Only downside was the outdoor terrace — it could use a bit more cleaning and upkeep. Otherwise, the experience was great, and we’d definitely come back!

Breakfast

By Teri W |

We were guests of the Wit hotel and decided to eat breakfast right at the hotel. It was delish. I had the Pork Omelette and hubby had the Chilaquiles. We both enjoyed.

Wonderful Bar & Restaurant!

By Ron M |

My wife and I stayed at The Wit, so the Tavern was our go to place for afternoon drinks, apps and breakfast! It was wonderful on all fronts. We loved sitting at the bar enjoying drinks and visiting with the locals. The breakfast offerings were perfect and well presented. Highly recommend. I had dinner at the bar one night during a Cubs game and loved the atmosphere!

Better than average hotel bar

By Gma0917 |

for breakfast its great if you have the included meal with your room for Gold and above Hilton Honors members. Food is very good. Had a nice lunch there as well. some decent entertainment on the weekends too. Its a better choice than going to the roof deck lounge/club if you want to just have a couple civilized app's or drinks.

Very nice place

By Abraham S |

It is a very nice place and excellent service, but the quantity of food was not sufficient, but the quality was good

Great cocktails; hearty breakfasts.

By KBB |

This place is perfect for meeting up after work with friends, or for a hearty breakfast before work. Delicious avocado toast.

good dinner, easy location

By NCHawkeye |

My husband had the pork chop and I had the whitefish tacos. Both were well prepared and delicious. Serving size was definitely adequate, not overwhelming. Good draft beer selection but the menu only lists prices for a cup, a 22 oz mug, and a growler. They automatically bring you a pint glass. Not a problem, just weird that they don't list the pint on the menu.

Breakfast Review

By NOLA |

I had breakfast there this morning. The bacon tasted rancid, the potatoes were grease soaked. The eggs were good, how can you mess up fried eggs? They were playing very loud rap music for breakfast. One song was about how the singer was going to pick up a girl to have his baby and shoot the place up. Sorry, not appropriate.

Great place to stop before the show in Chicago theater

By Layla R |

Stopped her last week before the concert at Chicago Theater and place was packed. Right at the door we were greeted by a handsome man in a blue suit, turns out that was a restaurant manager, who was super nice and polite and despite the hectic atmosphere kept a calm demeanor. We were seated quickly and although it took a bit to get order placed our server was very friendly and attentive and food delicious. My honest recommendations for double burger!!! Thank you Tanya and Bo for making this a memorable visit, I will definitely be back on my next trip to chicago.

Excellent Service and Food!

By Alexander F |

Very tasty!!, Very nice atmosphere and excellent service, Highly recommended! I had the egg and salmon benedictine, I really enjoyed it.

Nice Breakfast

By denber2014 |

We took a seat by the window, otherwise too dark for my taste. We enjoyed a very delicous casual breakfast. Nice menu and friendly, attentive staff. Although our waiter kept asking my companion three or four times after she said, no more coffee. He REALLY wanted to pour more. I understand they have a really good burger there too. Meal was well worth the visit.

Ok brunch.

By RoyalsfanChicago |

All the good breakfast places have such a wait on Sunday so we decided to eat at our hotel restaurant. It is a pub atmosphere in theWit Doubletree. It was pricey which is to be expected. We both had the andouille and broccoli omelet with cheese. Surprisingly, it was quite bland. Service was slow and I had to refill my own water. We stopped in the night before and they had a really good acoustic singer. I probably would not go back for a meal.

Grady hotel restaurant

By oldtomato |

While staying at theWit, we had 3 breakfasts and 1 dinner here. The breakfast were perfect for starting the day in the city. We ranged from big egg plates to a small coffee and croissant. All was great. Dinner was perfect for our first night. We had just landed at Midway and wanted good food in a cozy atmosphere. The food was hot, served quickly and tasted great. I also must mention the manager, Kim Seang. We asked her to suggest some other good, local restaurants. She gave us her favorites along with her personal cell phone number in case we wanted to check in with her. We really appreciated her kindness and help.

Stop for Breakfast

By Mike M |

Had a great breakfast. Nice variety of options. Traditional and very healthy. Really good service. Great vibe. Get the eggs Benedict. Loved it.

A wonderful experience

By sheroelraye2 |

It was really a wonderful experience in that place, I spent a whole week in the fantastic wit hotel; and everyday I had amazing delicious tasty breakfast. Not only the food taste; but also the staff was so freindly and generous That's a place I would recommend for anyone visiting Chicago

Solid breakfast. No thrills.

By CT |

The pancakes were fluffy and tasty. The eggs benedict prepared just right. There were too many competing flavors for the chicken and waffles dish. The chicken flavor was not well complimented by the dressing on the arugula salad. And arugula has a potent flavor all of its own. It’s a decent spot for breakfast but not one of our favorites on this trip. The staff was pleasant and attentive.

Excellent Food and Service

By sandersdg |

Had dinner here before a concert at the Chicago Theater. Definitely need a reservation. The food was excellent and the wait staff were fantastic. Had the Amish 1/2 chicken and the short rib dinners - both were great.

Hearty breakfasts and great servers

By Judith W |

We had breakfast here each of 5 mornings. Very generous servings, ranging from healthy to a little decadent! Nice strong coffee. Servers very helpful and ready to accommodate requests. People passing by dine here as well as hotel guests. We had dinner here once. Limited but interesting menu. Good wines and beers to choose from. Worth a visit!

Excellent Food - Quick Service - Fun Ambiance

By Jason M J |

During a conference between windows, I had an hour for lunch. After research I found State and Lake Chicago Tavern and chose to grab lunch there. I started with the Butternut Squash Soup, which was served with pumpkin seeds. It had the perfect blend of flavor and was magnificent. For my main dish I chose the Cauliflower Risotto, which was cooked to perfection with the perfect balance of piquancy. The service was on point and I was at my next meeting on time!

well prepared straightforward american

By Erick B |

As my colleagues were staying at the Wit, we decided to try the resident restaurant. It was a nice discovery - we went for the traditional fare ( I did the butcher burger) asking it raw - that is always telling on how much the restaurant trust their meat - the burger came as requested and everything else was really delicious. State & Lake is a relaxing place but above a regular tavern. Nice place!

Good location, cocktails and food

By Stephen W |

Great location, cocktails are great, service is great, food is great but I'd recommend one of many other similarly priced restaurants in Chicago that would give you a better food experience

Birthday weekend

By Peerpoint |

Stayed at theWit the night the Cubs clinched the pennant. Great sports atmosphere. Brunch the next day was very busy but the food was good. Had the breakfast 201 with scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and potatos. The $31.00 voucher was nice as a Hilton gold member.

Short staffed and food was average

By WadeJ |

They took along time to seat us and then a very long time to get drinks and order our food. They were short staffed. The food was very average. I had a chicken pasta dish. Chicken was very over cooked and small portions on the other items. Might have been better if they were better staffed.

Great atmosphere and food!

By TH |

Great location right inside the Hilton. The service and atmosphere were fantastic. The beer was cold and the food was delicious!

Pre-show right next to Chicago Theater

By Anthony F |

Pre-Avril Lavigne. They were flexible on time when traffic in from O'Hare delayed us. I had the burger and my wife the port and beef meatballs. Both were good. And fast.

Not the same restaurant as before

By sallytclair |

I discovered this place in a hotel a couple of years ago and went there twice for lunch and two-three times for dinner. It was on the second floor, a really vibrant place. Good bar crowd as well as dining section. Food was terrific and the menu was interesting. Now it is not the same! I don't know if the hotel is a different one or not, but the restaurant is not the same. Not on the second floor, hostess told me that is for banquets now. Menu is entirely different, food quality is good, but the selections are off beat and not nearly as good. No bar scene. Now it is a sleepy hotel place. So don't expect the place it used to be.

Good Bar/Restaurant

By Norma L |

We really enjoyed our breakfast and mimosas. Cocktails at the bar the night before were tasty and the bartender was very nice.

Choose a different restaurant

By Tina S |

I dined here with my husband and two children (ages 12 and 8) because we were staying in the hotel and thought it would be convenient to eat here. As soon as we sat down I noticed that the restaurant has some wear and tear. The fabric on all the chairs was ripped at every corner. Many of the candles on the walls were out. However, this wouldn't have bothered me had the food and service been good. The menu is very limited. We never saw our waitress after placing our order. No one checked in on us from the moment we ordered dinner until after we were finished eating (at that point when asked, I didn't feel like having another glass of wine. Had someone checked earlier I would definitely have had one!) I ordered a clam pasta dish. It was average at best. Also, It would have been nice to have a plate for the clam shells and a spoon to help in eating the pasta. I couldn't even ask for these things as NOONE bothered to come to our table! My husband ordered a roasted chicken. He wasn't impressed. Bottom line, there are way too many restaurants to choose from when in Chicago to go here. I will not be a repeat customer.

Really good Sunday brunch

By WinamacBoiler |

The service was really good and REALLY prompt. Funny story- we ordered our coffee and juice and sat there and had a few sips and chatted. About five minutes later we decided to go for the brunch buffet. We got back to our table and they had already cleared our table. The waiter was mortified. Needless to say, the bus-boys are on it! They apologized profusely, we laughed, they brough us fresh coffee and juice, and we enjoyed the wonderful selection of salts and sweets. Some notes: 1) The fried chicken was awesome. Small pieces, boneless, and just a bit spicy. 2) The biscuits are really good too. 3) My wife loved the homemade pancakes. 4) I really enjoyed the dried meat selection. Jamon serrano, cured salami, etc. 5) The fresh OJ is really good. Our server was great. We had brunch tix as diamond hilton people. Note to people who don't travel often: PLEASE DON'T STIFF YOUR SERVER BY ONLY TIPPING ON WHAT YOU HAVE TO PAY INSTEAD OF ON THE VALUE OF THE TOTAL BILL. It was packed in there and I could see a handful of tables where that was probably going to happen. Not cool, especially when the servers are as good as they were.

Good

By Javi M |

It’s a good place for take the brunch. We order chicken waffles and one turkey sandwich. The both were good by definitely if come here you should order the chicken waffles!

Hidden Gem

By JosephRichburg3344 |

Wow, this place is fantastic!! It's a little gem hidden away in the wit hotel. I passed by it often and have only recently been stopping in for breakfast. The service is amazing! The bartender Luis gives out great recommendations and is very welcoming. The food is always very fast and every dish is outstanding. The host or maybe manager Mylin has always said hello and welcomed me back with a smile. A very upscale yet laid back atmosphere.

Wonderful breakfast

By newma1ka |

What a gem! We stopped in for breakfast on a whim walking down state street to go to the Christkindlmarket. The service was superb and the food just as good! My husband had the Orange Line Bloody Mary and the pork belly hash. He said it was the best Bloody Mary he has ever had. I special ordered an egg white omelette that was not on the menu, and it was amazing. Super fluffy and perfectly made. The side of fruit that I got with it had the biggest sweetest blueberries that I’ve ever had. I’m not sure how they got fruit that good in the Midwest in December, but it was fantastic! It was very friendly, quiet, and easy to have a pleasant conversation. I highly recommend stopping in for breakfast and enjoying the friendly, attentive wait staff!

Really nice place

By Ben B |

Very pleasant place for drinks and food. Be sure to be there before 10.30 pm otherwise it will be packed with people coming from the theatre. Great life music, not too loud so you can still have a conversation.

Great meals and great service

By Oldsk8r |

During my recent stay 4 night stay at theWit I enjoyed breakfast in this restaurant each morning. I had a different main each day and they were all very tasty and delicious. The wait staff were all friendly and attentive to one and other diners needs. I enjoyed an evening meal on 2 nights and again enjoyed great meals and service from all staff encountered. I definitely recommend the restaurant for meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sit at the bar or table for 1, 2, 4 or more ....

XMAS Vacay

Previously rated this Tavern. Very good. Wine selection was excellent, cocktail offers were interesting. Soup OUTSTANDING!

Great place! I love this bar in the hotel i stayed.

By Mavilach |

I have dinner here and i loved it. Drink and food was outstanding, the server was also excellent. I'll definitely go again and recommend this place.

Amazing food, location, and service!

By Vicencio M |

My wife and I stayed at the Wit for the weekend and we aren't too fond on hotel restaurants but this place was amazing! After a long day traveling, we didn’t want to walk to far to grab a bite to eat, so we had lunch here. George, our lunch server, and Luis-G (Luigi), our brunch server, were beyond helpful and even recommended places we should check out while our first time in Chicago.  We had such a good experience that we returned for dinner and brunch a few days later. I would definitely return!

Late Dinner with Colleague

By Rob Lippman |

Nice eatery along the River. Had the trout dip as an appetizer. Lovely flavor and texture. Schnitzel entree was magnificent. Couldn’t have improved on it — absolute perfection. Nice ambience and noise level reasonable enough to hear the conversation.

Great burger

By PSH95 |

Stayed at The Wit Hotel and ate lunch at State and Lake. The burger was the best I've ever had. Pleasant atmosphere and in a great location. Convenient stop for lunch while sightseeing in Chicago.

Located in the Wit hotel....

By Barb H |

This restaurant is just awesome. The food is wonderful and the staff so friendly and helpful. Love the views outside, has a great menu.

Pre theater dinner

By Nancy Z |

Place was cozy and just the right size .. we didn't have a reservation huge line but hostess was nice enough to seat the two of us!! Brownie points . Beer selection was great .. food was ok not the best .. but we were famished so we ate it all ... our waiter didn't really visit us or pay attention to us. He was being consumed by his regular people .. but we didn't take that personal still gave him a good tip!!' We were excited to go see chris rock !!

Good food in great location

By Lisa S |

I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. While it has a good bar, it is more of a restaurant than a tavern. Very good food with creative recipes. Many of the tables are high tops but some are standard height too. It is part of the Wit Hotel, so valet parking is available. The brussel sprouts and squash and Bolognese pasta were excellent. Casual setting. Downtown prices, but good quality.

Go here for breakfast!! Oh so good!!

By AmishLou |

We had breakfast here every day that we stayed at theWit and since we got home, I honestly am missing their Avocado Toast. I can't even explain how good it was... it was such a unique mix of rye toast with avocados and eggs with scallion/orange relish. Although that may not sound good to you, trust me, it was DELICIOUS!! They have unique menu items that are OH SO MUCH BETTER than the standard breakfast fare you find at so many places. Everything my husband & I had their was amazing and unique and served with a smile... our waiter was so personable. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated as well... a great upscale tavern look! Don't miss this place when you're in Chicago!

Good breakfast!

By GMac56 |

We stayed at The Wit and ate breakfast at this restaurant each morning. The staff is very friendly. The menu has some unique takes on everyday breakfast items. It's conveniently located at the corner of State and Lake and has a "lodge" like atmosphere. We enjoyed it each time.

Get the Pretzel!

By Viciousb |

loved the pretzel, really tasty! Ambience of the restaurant was great and really friendly staff. Good for a casual dinner and breakfast!

Breakfast in the Loop

By Deb H |

I always struggle to find a good breakfast when staying in Chicago but State and Lake Tavern was great. I had the Chilaquiles they were wonderful the salsa verde gave them that zing of flavor. My husband had one of the traditional breakfast and liked his as well. Service was perfect. Now I look forward to having dinner next time we are in town.

Food was amazing, service not so much

By J18 |

Went for dinner and when we sat down my wife and daughter went to the bathroom. Our server, Javier, came over and asked what we wanted to drink. I said we’d all take water and if he could bring some lemons for my daughter and I. Came back with limes and was shocked to find out we wanted lemons not limes. I ordered a Miller Lite on draft, came back to tell me they didn’t have it on draft. No big deal I’ll take a bottle with a glass. “Would you like ice with that?” Huh?! Ordering I got a steak and asked for a Caesar salad, definitely asked for it to come first. I also asked what side came with the steak, “fresh fries” was the answer. 15-20 minutes go by and there’s no salad yet. I asked and he said he’d check on it. Came back to tell me the kitchen wanted it to come out with my food but he’d try to get it out sooner. Salad comes out with the meal and to make it better I got what looked like twice baked potatoes. I actually preferred that but again another thing Javier was totally wrong about. He didn’t come over once to ask if everything came out alright. I actually had to get up and ask for my wife’s water to be refilled. Now to speak on the food. It was great, everything tasted great and was prepared well!

Comfy and tasty

By Glintz |

This bar/restaurant in a new hotel in the Loop is a good place to grab some better bar food (beyond the burger...but the burger was good) in a cozy but not horribly loud setting. I also found the prices reasonable (under $30 for a beer, split entree, side dish and desert.) The service was speedy but not pushy. Great place for pre-theater dinner if you want to be on the casual side.

Quiet, low key restaurant and bar with great food.

By Btiernan24 |

I would have rated 5 stars, but the menu was limited for food. The food we did get was great and good portions. The service was good. My daughter had chicken strips and fries. My husband and I both had steak frites…steak and fries. The aeoli dip was a nice touch.

Very Good Breakfast

By The_Loup_Garou |

While staying at The wit, we had breakfast at State and Lake twice. Each visit was quite good, with attentive service, and the food cooked to order. My Scrambled Eggs were great, and the kitchen hit my wife's "Over Medium" perfectly. Though the space is oddly shaped, we had a table with plenty of room. Some appeared to be rather close together. For "hotel food," they delivered well. Do check hours of operations, as we seemed to just miss them, at other times.

Amazing staff, great food, great atmosphere.

By Heather C |

Wonderful, calm, upscale atmosphere; amazing food; excellent service. I left my scarf behind and Mario (general manager) was so kind and arranged to mail it to my home since I was there visiting from out of town. Amazing staff, great food, great atmosphere. Definitely recommend for a great lunch while you are exploring the city

Disappointed

By sh51287 |

Went for breakfast on a Wednesday morning before heading to fly out of Midway. Seated by hostess promptly:) downhill from there:( waiter took our order (I asked for coleslaw on side of my chicken/waffles) and food did come out in appropriate amount of time but no coleslaw at all, no replenishment of coffee. Actually, we never saw the waiter again until after we signed our check (another staff member brought to us after I went and got a carafe of coffee off the bar because no one ever came to replenish our coffee-the entire time we were there!)

Surprise Breakfast!

By Nathan O |

Staying in the Wit and decided to dine in for breakfast. To my surprise, several choices were tempting. Decided on pork belly hash--1 inch slice of smoked and warmed pork belly, over eggs, over potatoes, over sauce.

Conveniently in the hotel

By bird383 |

Conveniently part of the hotel, but a bit pricy ! 2 bagels with cream cheese, 2 eggs with potatoes and toast and 2 coffees for $35.00!

Chicago Market Week (STYLEMAX)

By LamondHull |

Great drinks and the staff is pretty nice. Really nice choices for dinner on the Menu as well. Great alternative to going elsewhere to dine if you've had a long day.

Cozy

By KeithDonovan |

A nice restaurant inside The Witt Hotel. Stellar service from Javier and Monica, who knew the menu very well, and made great suggestions. On Saturday night a live musician performed. If you’re visiting the city of Chicago, and looking for a nice casual restaurant, this is the place.

Great food

By Omegawolf |

State and lake had a good and interesting meal for both breakfast and dinner they focused a lot on chicken however so not many coined if looking for a steak or other foods

Breakfast

By Brian H |

Traditional American breakfast, lots of choices, quick, clean, get the paper with your food, and everything was fresh and made to order.

Fantastic meal and service!

By Melissa S |

Found this on accident and were thrilled!!! We went for their brunch and it was amazing. Mimosas, mini muffins, corned beef hash, and the pancakes....oh, the pancakes!!!!! Everything was worth every calorie!!!!

Burgers in The Loop

By Lorenza R |

Nice and pleasant restaurant located in theWit hotel in The Loop. Very good atmosphere, friendly staff, great burgers, great beer selection. Really nice dinner with friends!

Gluten free toast and eggs were perfect

By fizzy1991 |

The eggs were poached to perfection and the gluten free toast was a nice plus. Wasn’t wild about the potatoes though and the fruit was frozen. So a bit hit or miss with the food. The service was friendly and fast which is always a plus. This restaurant is attached to the Hilton hotel but you can also access it from the outside.

Happy hour

By disney7071 |

Nice place for happy hour. $5 beers and inexpensive bites. Attentive bartenders. Right next door to the Wit so very convenient to the hotel and theater district.

So good, had to try it twice!

By DFitzP |

We happened upon State & Lake for a quick lunch, thinking it was a "typical downtown-diner menu- breakfast.lunch.dinner" type of place. What a pleasant surprise!! We knew upon entering that we were in for a treat. Nice bar, comfy tables and great music! The menu is not large - but there were so many items I wanted to try, we knew we were destined to return again during our brief stay in Chicago. Their take on Poutine is fun and scrumptious! The carrot soup was fantastic and presented in spectacular fashion (you gotta try it!) and the Kale Caesar was inventive and delicious! Fantastic selection of local beers with great info and descriptions on the list. We came in for dinner the next night- to watch the Cubs win the NLCS!!! Dinner did not disappoint, nor did the locals as we were surrounded by multiple TV screens showing history unfold! Live music on Fridays and Saturdays after 10pm added to the fun. We know where we'll head on our next trip to Chicago!!!

lunch

By dex49 |

we went for lunch and had a very nice meal. their beer selection is very good, and their wine list is adequate. I'm on low carb and ordered a burger minus bun and fries. they gave me some grilled veggies and a nice side salad in place of the fries. the service was very good. it's a little noisy, but my experience was very good. it's also in a great location.

Pre-concert Surprise

By fcgfcg |

Located in theWit Hotel, this lobby lounge was a true find. Appetizers and spirits added to the overwhelming attention we received from the hostess to the servers. The guests who were out of towers snacking prior to the same concert were a joy to share stories with, eventhough this was our first meeting. Overall the ambiance, menu items and guests made this initial visit definitely worthy of a repeat visit while we await curtains up on future concerts. Very inviting and a perfect place to start the evening.

Special Dietary Needs? No Problem!

By Lowshell |

I'm always skeptical about eating out because of my dairy allergy -so as with every other restaurant, I first ask to see the menu before walking past the host. As I was reading the menu one of the chefs walked up and asked if he could help! He was delighted to tell me that my allergy would not be a problem at all. I ordered the Spinach Risotto without the Swiss cheese and we shared the Roasted Cauliflower appetizer. The meal was so delicious! When I return to Chicago I will definitely be returning!

Wonderful Breakfast, But a Bit Pricy

Had breakfast here with my family and the menu was brief, but had a wonderful blend of gourmet options. We ordered pancakes, an omelet, and a pork belly burrito. The atmosphere is classy - the service pleasant. Orange juice is fresh squeezed and potatoes well seasoned.

Great brunch

I still marvel at the uncrowded nature of my midmorning Sunday brunch at State and Lake Chicago Tavern. My breakfast was lovely, and the wait staff was very attentive. One of my top five Chicago brunches.

Don't pass this place if you want quiet and comfort

By kevinsmithd56 |

For a tavern, State and Lake is energized but a bit quieter than most. That suited us just fine as we were hot and tired on our first trip. The cheese pretzel was very good but the mustards prepared on site were incredibly flavorful. We were so impressed we came back for breakfast and found this to be our favorite breakfast place as well as tavern near the river. Being so close to the L it's easy to pass this place up - but don't!

Met my sister here for dinner. Ok service, but awful food. Rustic pate was very strong and reminded us of Spam flavor. Lambchetta with polenta so salty it was inedible. Pub burger was ok, but had a strange purple sauce we scraped off. Desert came wrapped in plastic...clearly a bulk supply item. Over all, pretty awful.
