Still my favorite New York pizza in Portland

By chasmo k |

I am a Pizza guy. In 1964 my mom took me to the Worlds Fair in New York and introduced me to pizza. Basically starting a life time commitment to learn as much as possible about the art of making pizza. Culminating in my own place, A Slice of New York... now closed, as I am retired. These guys do it right. Everything is spot on. Great selection of slices all day. We got there at 7pm and the slice case was full. Sauce, cheese, crust and toppings are all top quality. My only complaint... no anchovies, but that is probably a good thing for most. When I want New York thin crust pizza. This is where I go. They do have other locations, which I have not tried yet. Also find them in Salem.

NY Pizza has found a home

By JudyM_12 |

NY Pizza has found a home in SE Portland. Since Ny Ny closed on SW Barbur Blvd, NY style pizza has been almost impossible to find. Then comes Straight From NY Pizza on SE Belmont, and it's just perfect. Take it from a New Yorker , from the crust to the oil it is perfection.

Good food..nice staff.

I'll go back for more pizza and breadsticks. They have a pizza happy hour which is so affordable for very good food.

Good Pie

By Quest21159293938 |

Have stopped here before before but it has been a few years. I wasn't dissapointed the two pieces of pizza and a drink is still available at a reasonable price. I love the flavor and size of the pizza. The breadsticks are fantastic.

Fantastic Pizza!

My wife and I came here the day after our last attempt at finding a good pizza because we were left very unsatisfied. When we walked in, we found it to be empty, but they had just opened, and it was a Friday afternoon. Along with a nice selection of pizza by the slice, they have a small menu, and only one size of pie, and these suckers are HUGE! We went ahead and ordered the Margherita (they spelled it Margharita, but at least that's closer than most places), and sat down and watched the pizzaiolo toss the dough. This young man deserved that title because he handled the dough like a professional. Olive oil and hand torn fresh mozzarella were placed on the dough, and in the oven it went. After a few minutes, he pulled it out, placed the thin sliced Roma tomatoes, fresh garlic and Parmesan on the pie before going back on. Again, a few minutes later and the pie was pulled, topped with fresh basil, cut and served. The edges of the dough showed signs of perfect fermentation and proofing, while the center was crispy and perfectly thin. We ate beyond comfort and into a level of painfully stuffed simply because it was too good to stop. This was a perfect Margherita pizza and really satisfied my craving. We definitely look forward to going back in the future and trying a traditional sauce based pizza. Only this time we will be bringing at least one friend, just to help eat the thing.

Organized and efficient!

During Pizza Week, we're visiting a lot of local pizza joints, and this one stands out above the rest. Not only is their choice for Pizza the best we've had so far after three days, but this operation runs smoothly. They're firm with the rules, but the pizza comes out fast, and their very friendly. I'd come back after Pizza Week was over to be sure. They deserve my business!

if we only had manhattan water...

By Steven J |

... that's what really makes the difference in bagels and pizza from anywhere else in the world; and while i prefer portland, we can't really brag about our public water. but i can brag about this pizza joint. it's not always totally crowded, but if it is it's worth the wait. and if you have to wait, call ahead and put in order for a whole pizza. a little spendy by portland standards... even new york standards... but if you're looking for that certain thin tossed greasy crusted cheesy pizza like you got on the upper west side, this is the place.

Thin Crust Pizza on the Inner East side

By Dyanne G |

I love pizza, love it!! But it does not love me, my thighs, belly or butt. So that being said I try to restrict my intake of pizza to every other month. As much as I would love to get a whole pie for me and the hubby, that is just too much pizza leftovers. So... I limit my intake of pizza to slices. I'm an east coast gal so even though I like all types of pizza I gravitate to thin crust. When I lived over in NW PDX my go to was always Escape from NY but it has been years since I lived in that area and my search for thin crust pizza on the inner east side has been long and somewhat disappointing. But not any more!!!! SFNY Is just as good and on my side of town. I have been coming here since it opened and was so glad to see a quality pizza place in the Belmont/Hawthorn area that does not have a mile long line and a foodie following. Thin crust rules!! They always have a great selection of slices available and a 2 slice and soda special price for $7.50. Happy hour slices from 2-4pm are $2.75 and the slices are HUGE!!, More than enough to fill you up. If inside seating is full they have a great heated patio out back.

Best NY pizza found

By Dave |

I've been looking for great NY style pizza. You know the kind with great crust and toppings and the cheese yum. This place is the closest I've found. They have one size 18" but it is closer to 24". We ordered the SFNY combo with no red sauce. We like an olive oil and garlic lightly spread on the crust. The pizza was cooked to perfection and the toppings were great. I especially like that the peppers were Red Bell and not the green. It had pepperoni, mushrooms, black olives, peppers and Canadian bacon. $24.00 plenty for two with slices for take home. The crust was chewey and flavorful and cooked just right. Too bad they are not on the SE side of Portland as I would like to visit often.

Dessert Pizza?

By Bryan H |

The Straight From NY Pizza on Belmont decided to do dessert pizza for Pizza week. (I think they were the only ones on the list who did it.) We went on a Saturday night, and the place was packed with a line almost out the door. The staff was friendly in spite of the maddening throngs. The pizza surprisingly delicious. We had to take it to go because there was no place even remotely to sit down. This place was packed! I want to come back during an ordinary night to see how it is.

Deliciousness!

I haven’t been to NY but this place was close to our hotel and a quick walk. I ordered a slice of Margherita and was not disappointed. Again, not from NY, live in Hawaii so there you have it. I normally like a thick crust, and there’s is thin. That’s good if you intend to drink and not get so full of pizza. The slice was more than adequate imo, and I personally don’t like a super thin cracker type crust like many others. This was my type of crust but I don’t know if it’s because it was sitting out. Either way, i loved it and yes, it is a little on the flimsy side. But great flavor and for $4 who can complain. I ordered to go as I wasn’t hungry yet otherwise I’d have eaten in the shop. Plenty beers to choose from as well. Shop is not fancy, not pretentious, street parking.

Just Ok

NYC style slices all the way

By Jeremy L |

Nothing but a great simple NYC authentic menu, big slices. Good pizza for a affordable price with great flavor! A couple homeless drunks were just passed out and staff gave them the boot. Great place!

Great crust-wow!

Hit the spot

By mbelin |

Relaxed, friendly vibe; it probably helped that we were there around 4:00, so there was no crowd. Nice little patio out back. Our pizza was made to order and arrived at our table hot on top with a nice crisp but chewy crust. Free parking available on streets in the neighborhood.

We ate the pizza, but could have been better

By timgindav |

We ate the pizza, but could have been better. The crust was lacking flavor and the sauce was too tangy. NY pizza sauce is lighter and sweeter than this. The cheese had a good flavor. Average NY pizza, could have been better but could have been worse. There was a large selection of slices but we ordered a whole pie. It is in the middle of Beltown neighborhood and is not really close to any of the freeways. Parking can be tricky.

Closest to NY Pizza I have had in the NW

By Michael F |

I ordered ahead of time and my order was ready exactly when they said it would be 25 minutes later! I ordered pepperoni and pineapple and it was amazing even then next day reheated! I'll drive down from Seattle to get my NY pizza fix from here!

Great NY style slices

By tfizzle |

Love this place, only one size for take away which is about 18 inches for about $22. Love the composed pies but also they make a very very good pepperoni. Fun place to sit and eat or good take away. Decent beers also. Can be crowded around timbers games.

Great Pizza, Beer, Salads, and Value--Multiple Locations

By SuzXeric |

This place was a find. I visited the 2241 W Burnside location. The salads are made fresh and the pizza-by-the-slice selections are so tempting I discarded my intention of ordering calzone. With draft beers, quality food at great prices, friendly, helpful staff, and casual, upbeat atmosphere, this place was perfect. The thin-crust, NY style pizza was foldable, with an airy-yet-doughy crust and the subtle, outer crispness you expect from wood-fired pizzas. The toppings were quality, well-portioned, and chosen in good combinations on the premade selections. This place is well-suited for a dinner among friends or family, or a quick stop in for a bite to eat or to go. Delicious offerings at reasonable prices.

Wow- that is good pizza

By Cindy S |

Took friend to hospital in Portland, rainy night, stuck in motel, ordered combo pizza from SFNY pizza. Delivery time said to be 45 minutes, arrived in 40 minutes. Delivery guy was great, welcomed me to Portland...pizza was $27 plus $2 delivery and tip. Pizza was huge. Thin crust, every inch covered in toppings, great light sauce, nothing overwhelming, all meshed great. No cheating on toppings, if it said sausage, it was there in good representation. Probably in the top 5 pizzas I have ever had, and I eat lots of pizza. Can't find any fault with any of it. I hear they have branch in Salem, might check that out next.

Closest thing to NYC!

By Krystle C |

Every time I visit NYC I can't get enough of their pizza. I love the thin crust by the slice. When I'm missing NYC I head here to grab a whole pie. I take the pizza home and heat in the oven at 350 degrees for about 5 to 10 minutes...just put the pizza slice straight on the rack. The pizza is heated perfectly and the right amount of crispy.

Superlative NY pie

By William R |

Excellent NY pie. I never get it by the slice although that seems to be the most common order. It is just plain, no frills, quality pizza. Hand thrown and offered with the usual toppings. Big broad slices that can only be eaten ny style by folding it in half. Served hot from the oven such that it will burn the roof of your mouth as the gooey cheese needs to be slurped up so as to prevent it from falling off. I can’t comment on the salad or the drinks because this is a pizzeria; not a family style restaurant. You know what I mean.

Great Pizza. Great service

By Mike N |

One of our favorite places to eat when we are in Portland. Try the Margarite you will love it Neighborhood is cozy. Little place with big New York Style pies

My favorite pizza place, period.

By Brian B |

For starters, I always went to the location on W. Burnside across from the gas station. This place is everything I want out of pizza. Big slices, consistent flavor, and cheap prices. For $4 you can get a slice of pizza and a 10 oz. craft beer or Ranier tallboy. It is the best meal $8 can buy in this area of Portland. Go. They have vegan and vegetarian pizza too. Go!

Fast yummy NY style pizza with good cheap beer.

By 73dallasd |

A fast cheap option for decent cheese pizza. The slice & PBR Tall Boy is a cheap fast option for a night-cap or a lazy lunch.
