Unique menu items

By David |

This place was well worth the price! We went in for breakfast and was able to be seated right away. We ordered cheese cream filled bites wrapped in crépes and they were something to talk about! Great staff and very friendly! Omelettes are excellent! I'll be back!

A return for a family breakfast

By Robert G |

Our family decided to return for breakfast since our last experience was so good. We arrived around 11:30 am on a Sunday and only had to wait for about 15 minutes to be seated. The waiter was attentive, serving us our drinks and distributing the menus promptly. The egg dishes with various sides were served hot, as were the pancakes and a couple of beef sandwiches. The food is home-style tasty and filling. We all thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will be back once again when visiting.

Very average diner food in unique building

By I D Bishop |

The food quality, preparation, menu choices etc.. are all very generic diner fare. In fact, some would even be 'iffy' diner quality - such as the eggs benedict (egg on muffin, on slab of ham). That said, prices are fair and the setting is pleasant, and its 'movie/film lot' theme is appealing. A little more kitchen quality would go a long way.

Studio Diner - Great Food and Great Service - Saw on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

By JMMcD |

Studio Diner - Great Food and Great Service - Saw on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives while we were in San Diego. We had to go try the Studio Diner. It was worth short 15 minute wait after we had seen the episode the night before.

HUGE Club Sandwich

By Robert L |

Lunch at the Studio Diner. I ordered the Club Sandwich. It was probably the largest club sandwich I've ever seen. Normally, I can handle an entire club sandwich. Not this one, I only managed to eat half of it. Nicely toasted thick wheat bread with mayo and plenty of bacon, tomato, lettuce, turkey and large pile of fries.

studio diner

By William O |

As always we stopped for breakfast burritos. the atmosphere is interesting and sitting on the patio is great.

Worth eating at

By brella64 |

A cute diner with excellent food. The boob sandwich is amazing, the fish & chips are delicious and the BLT is the largest I have ever seen. Don't forget to get a milkshake!!!

Tasty Food, Huge Portions, Friendly and Hard working Staff

By David Miller |

My wife and I visited The Studio Dinner which is tuck away in and busy high end industrial area of San Diego on Ruffin Rd. The experience we had was Awesome ! The atmosphere takes you back in time in America when traveling to a restaurant was more than rush in, and rush out. The Studio Dinner's kitchen staff was so organized as they worked so fast and hard pumping meals out faster than the servers could take them to the tables. I have never scene such togetherness in a kitchen. It was great watching them during the lunch hour rush. Our server Amberlee was so pleasant and helpful with explanations about the menu and meals. Mathew the manager did a great job talking and smiling with customers, and making sure everything was running well with the restaurant and staff. Now the Food ! IT WAS FANTASTIC ! My wife had the Fish and Chips dish made with fresh Icelandic Haddock ( Look at the PIctures). The cooks leave the skin on the fish as they deep fry it, to give the fish a crispy outside crust and a delicious moist perfectly cooked inside to the fish. The dish also comes with coleslaw and fries. I had the classic Reuben sandwich with Pastrami on grilled rye, with sauerkraut, swiss cheese & 1000 Island dressing. The thin cut, tenderness, and wonderful taste of the Pastrami was the best I have ever had. I also had there wonderful sweet potato fries, Yum ! For dessert we had a huge piece of Carrot Cake and a delicious piece of Julian Apple Pie with ice cream. You have to try out this wonderful playful, and outside the box small and tiny Studio Dinner Restaurant . You will not be disappointed !

Birthday party for our coffee group

By Emory B |

Our morning coffee group celebrated three members birthdays today at the Studio Diner. Reservations were made for 12 members to attend at 7 am on a Saturday. The Studio Diner had everything ready when the group arrived. Excellent service, our waiter took the orders and the food was served in a timely manner. The only negative part was due to the large number of order some of the orders were not HOT and had to be sent back. The food was excellent. The most popular was the 1,2,3, one pancake, two eggs, three bacon or sausage.

Great find

By Brenda S |

Went here because it was recommended on Triple D show. It was crowded so we had to wait about 30 minutes. But the food was good. Server friendly. Great views from the patio but it was to cold to sit outside.

That Monte Cristo is EVERYthing

By Lisa D (Mz. Lulu) |

Omg. That all the words I had about that sandwich. Hold the fries bc the calories from the sandwich is enough. Dipped in the preserves makes an awesome mouth orgasm.

Best Food in San Diego

By John H |

This dinner is open 24 hours a day. It began as a place for movie and television workers to eat when they weren't working on the set. The last remaining studio is next door to the diner. They have a unique menu and everything is great.

Fun place for dinner

By 1222linda |

We really like the Studio Diner. We are not “wait to be shown to a table couple” and will pick the counter if available. The food is good. Although I’ve never had it, the fish and chips is huge. The man next to us tonight had it and really enjoyed it. The waitresses are nice and friendly. If you’re near by and am hungry, give it a try!

wow don't miss this for amazing comfort food!

By Jon G |

We were in the San Diego area and wanted to find a fun diner. This place was great. It is the best variety diner menu I have ever experienced. We chose 4 different meals and all were unique and delicious. There is some cool movie props hanging around. I can see why Diner Drive Inns and Dives came here!

Nice diner!

By Dcbabes433 |

Studio diner is a ok place too eat, my father in law liked going here for anytime food, he loved talking to everyone that listen. Good size portion. Milkshakes are good, burgers are good, dinner good, breakfast not bad. Cute place to stop on in and eat. Always busy!

Food....GREAT! Server communication?.... not so much.

By Jeff S |

In town for a few days, and thought we had found our spot for dinner for the rest of our trip, until my daughters food was made incorrectly abd we tried to return it bad just get her a bowl of soup instead. At the end of the night we were charged for both!!!! Not sure why, guess we will try to find a new place to eat for the rest of our stay here ...

First visit in a few years

By 10ringtraveler |

Headed home a little later than usual and stopped here for dinner. I have eaten here numerous times while working but that was several years ago and my wife had never eaten here. A perfect time to stop! The diner is on a busy street but seems to have a small parking lot. I think there is a lot of foot traffic due to the businesses in the area. Just something to keep in mind, We drove in and even at approximately 9:00 we were not able to park in the lot. There are several places on the street right in front. Parking there was no issue! The grounds and the building are clean and well maintained. Plenty of lighting all around and the area is very safe. The diner is self is designed very well and you feel as if you are walking into a movie studio... The staff were all very nice and helpful, we were seated without delay and our orders taken very quickly. I went for the "Eastwood Burger" while my wife chose a waffle. Again our orders were brought to us very quickly and both were delicious. I thought about only having half my burger do to the hour...and probably should have....it was very filling :) The tables and the restrooms were very clean, I saw the tables bussed and cleaned as soon as diners left. Overall a great experience. If we are in the area again we would certainly stop here......as you should!!!!

Studio Diner

By baker401716 |

Food was good, wait time was 40 minutes, the service was above average. Overall it was ok, don't know if it was worth the 40 minute wait.

not to recommend

By jacob g |

I do not understand all the hype. Food was ordinary or less. Breakfast sausage was flavorless and so were the eggs and pancake. I ate a little and then went elsewhere to eat.

Good food at reasonable price

By Paulette D |

I had the tuna salad, just enough mayo to moisten so it was great. can be a bit noisy, patio seating is quieter.

Yummy Diner Food!

By margaretj2016 |

We recently ate at Studio Diner for dinner with family! Our foods choices were excellent, the service was top notch and we enjoyed eating out on their back patio! A wide variety of food choices can satisfy your entire party!

Who is in the kitchen?

By gardencoach |

4 of us dined here on a recent Sunday. Its always packed at weekday lunch. Perhaps due to lack of other eateries in the vicinity. Used to go here and it was pretty good. Tonite, not crowded and no one seemed to be in charge in the kitchen. Our friends each ordered the Lobster Roll ($23) which came on what appeared to be a slice of white bread and choice of side. My taste of this was overly salty and rubbery. Glad we didnt order. We did order the Chicken Pot Pie. Both came to the table barely warm. No steam coming out when we forked into our dish. Green Beans were practically raw. Waiter accomodated us and returned out pies to be heated up. And then they forgot about them. FINALLY, our pies were returned and instead of the "flaky crust" that was on top, it had been replaced with an over cooked tortilla! There was just nothing more to say except lets get out of here. Sorry, a complete waste of money and time. I hope one of the owners eats here soon and makes some changes. Awful awful food. What restaurant did Guy Fieri review? Not this one.

Always pretty darn good

By TDPGH |

Love the cobb salad! Made the mistake of deviating and ordered a tuna melt....did not enjoy it. Had a side of fries and a cup of corn chowder, both were delicious. Awesome server who made me a smaller version of a banana split when I said I wanted one but that it was too big. She was great! I try to visit every time I am in San Diego. We were there for a late dinner last week, and it was not crowded, which was nice.

Outstanding place

By John K |

Anytime I am in San Diego I make it a point to go to Studio Diner, usually for breakfast with friends and/or clients but sometimes for lunch. Service is always friendly and efficient and the food is simply great. You gotta go there!

Really cool place for a really good meal

By SanDiegoTravelingman |

My wife and I tried it for the first and we were very happy with the food and service. The food was excellent and the service fast and with a smile. Our food was prepared just as we ordered it, it was hot and the portion size was big enough to share, even though we orders two different things. Try it, you will like it

Best Diner Around

By ksgsbooks |

Looking for some small portions and boring meal options? Craving something bland and healthy for lunch? Then this is not the place for you! Yes, they do have tasty salads and some great vegetarian options, but this is a true American diner. From soup bowls the size of platters to ice cream sundaes that serve 4, every dish is big and delicious. My personal favorite is the Count of Monte Christo Sandwich (a deep fried ham, turkey and cheese sandwich served with fries and jam for dipping - yum!). Open for long hours, although not 24/7 as it used to be, the Studio Diner is located next to San Diego’s only studio. It is an adorable 50’s style building with some cute nods to film around the place. Plenty of parking in their lot, on the street, and nearby.

Joe G.

By Joe G |

The Studio Diner tries to be an east coast style diner and comes pretty close. The food is really good and portions are reasonable. Thanks to Guy Fietti, it has become a very popular "destination" restaurant but the only thing that changed on the menu were the prices. It's a great place to bring your out of town family and friends

Diner with a wide selection

By alviemsw |

Restaurant seems with be very popular with the locals. The sandwiches came in large portions. Even though the lobster roll had a good amount of lobster meal it was made more like a tuna salad with mayo and celery. Overall the visit was OK.

Unimpressed

By wazza99 |

Having searched San Diego's top 10 diners, this one kept popping up. Called in around 5pm pretty empty. Our server Andrew was polite but not engaging, not cracked a smile. Food was good but not outstanding in any way and imo at the top end of diner prices. Desert options limited and disappointing no cheesecake ! Parting pleasantries almost none existing,as I said food nice but service lacking American enthusiasm.

amazing breakfasts on an old TV studio lot

By caltravelgal |

Situated on a former tv production lot, this diner offers fantastic blueberry pancakes and bacon, as well as eggs benedict, nice coffee, and many other meals. I also bought a souvenir mug. Cannot wait to return!

Late night option

By SDmommy76 |

If you are looking for a late night dining option in San Diego, consider the Studio Diner in Kearney Mesa. The wait staff is super friendly and the food is great. I have been bringing my family here for years for the family friendly dining and delicious food, breakfast served all day and the best coffee malt! It's open until midnight every night and 24 hours thurs-sat. Peak dinner times can be a wait, but I don't think I've ever waited more than 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Wow!!!!

By Amanda J |

The coffee was excellent! I had the special, "The Eastwood Benny" it was cooked perfectly both eggs were poached to perfection! My family and I will be back.

Lovely birthday breakfast

By robinhenry |

Fantastic breakfast place..will go again. So many choices . Really good service and good food for reasonable price.

Great breakfast

By Randy46236 |

Classic dinner with great menu reflecting what you’d expect. Biscuits and gravy were spot on, best I’ve had since leaving Texas. Quick friendly service. The real deal.

This is a great diner!

By Diane E |

We often go to this diner... we love the food and the staff are great. We always enjoy it. They have a very varied menu and are willing to change menu items around to suit the customer. Highly recommend it!

lunch after the Dr.

By Luanne L |

Great sea food with an old school diner feel. Nice staff. We will be coming back when we are this way again.

Granted re-opened after closing due to Covid

By Al M |

Couldn.t wait to go back the "Diner" since they re-opened a couple of weeks ago. Well, I wish I had never gone back, I had yhe Country steak breakfast and it was terrible. I think the patty that was about 3/8's of inch thick was in their freezer for 2 years, the hash browns were lukewarm like the patty but the eggs were ok, oh and the wheat toast was "spongy", how does that happen? my wife had the sliders and the meat was the same thing, probably microwaved, miniature frisbees. There was a time I would recommend this place but after this experience, don't waste your time or money.

The BLT is huge! Service is crappy

By email4saundra1 |

It was three stars, minus one for crappy service. Slow to be acknowledged and see seated, even though almost empty on Sunday evening. After seated, lots of servers pass by, nobody says " be right with you" :( Finally a waitress appears that wasn't one of the ones wandering around. I can barely hear her, she's using her little girl voice. Finally, we order and wait...Somebody different comes out with our sandwich. Wierd. Never asked how everything was, or if we needed drink refills. The blt was very good sized, but, please DON'T DEEP FRY bacon. It's lazy and makes the bacon inedible. I may try this place again, but as of this moment, I cannot recommend.

The hidden spot

By Agripina J |

We were in for a surprise when our friend brought us to this local joint. If you’re in San Diego this is a must stop. The food is excellent 👌🏽

Lunch

By Jean B |

Fun place. Big menu. Just had to have the Monte Cristo. Could not finish it. Big servings. Would go again but order differently. Great waiter.

Cute spot with good food

By Dan B |

I love diners and this is an excellent example. Looks like it may have been moved to this spot. Not sure, but cute nonetheless. The food is mostly comfort. I was with a large group and we tried everything from the egg sandwich to fish and chips to chicken pot pie. All was good. No one really raved about the food, but all had a good time and enjoyed the food and service. Fun time.....good food..........and it was featured on DDD with Guy Fiery

LOVED IT!

By Michelle E |

We saw this listed as one of the places Guy from DDD visited so we wanted to try it. Plus my mom saw they have a Monte Cristo sandwhich she loves. Our server Ben was really nice and friendly. The menu is diner type and you can get breakfast all day. My mom had the Monte Cristo which she loved. I ordered the King of Clubs sandwhich on white bread thinking it would be a small sandwhich. Nooo, it was huge! And delicious! I could only eat half and took the other half with us. Bottom line, friendly service, huge portions. It is a must-try when you come to San Diego! We can't wait to go back!

Great Place, even better food

By AZJim17 |

Choose Studio Diner from a local advertisement / map and it turned into a really great choice! Each person in our group ordered a different meal and we all really enjoyed it. Vanilla malt was superb. Reuben was delicious. Prices were very reasonable especially for the amount of food. Check it out; you'll be happy!

Studio Diner has always been one of my favorites.

By Julie D |

This San Diego Favorite has been on Diners Drive-In's and Dives. A dive it is not, great diner food with a kick. It had been a while since I'd been there but, as usual, did not disappoint. Their menu now has pictures, which is a great addition. I had a Black N Blue salad, basically Caesar Salad with Flank Steak, Gorgonzola Cheese Crumbles. YUM YUM. I could not resist adding a side biscuit with their awesome gravy. Just warms my tummy. Studio gets very busy so plan ahead. They also have outside seating for bigger groups.

Cute place, great food and service!

By Bretz217 |

Loved it! Great little place near businesses that offered all day breakfast! That was what sold it for me! I made my own omelet with jalapenos, ground beef, spinach, and feta. Food was hot, cooked perfectly, and great! Thanks again!

A darn good diner

By corkyc988 |

I am spoiled living in NJ, the diner capital of the world. While traveling, we have been shaken our heads of what other parts of the country consider diners. However, Studio Diner lived up to it's name! After a full day, we decided to give the diner a try and we are glad that we did. Each of the four of us ordered a different meal and we were all pleased with our food. I had the Monte Cristo and it was delicious. Service was good, prices fair, if I lived in the area I would be back.

LOVE the Monte Cristo

By Steve C |

Growing up in San Diego we went to Disneyland fairly often when I was a kid and I remember the Monte Cristo Sandwich at the Blue Bayou restaurant (The restaurant where your seated overlooking the Pirates of the Caribbean ride) I have always considered that to be the best M.C. I've had, and compared every other sandwich to that standard. I felt the Monte Cristo at Studio Diner was on that level. I knew as soon as i saw the M.C. on the menu I was going to get that, but many of the other items looked very tempting, Both my Mom and My sweet Auntie Jackie very much enjoyed their meals. Would LOVE to return anytime to explore the rest of the menu!

Something on the menu for everyone at this casual, fun & funky place

By skistopalms |

In the San Diego area for a car show and staying at a hotel nearby, our group of 6 was intrigued by Studio Diner's film industry theme and diverse menu, and it turned out to be a great choice for casual dining! Most of us had a hard time choosing from the many very appealing-sounding menu options, and everyone raved about whatever they ended up ordering -- from a quirky lox-ness omelet (they serve breakfast 'round the clock), to the Albacore Tuna Melt with a side of Mac 'n Cheese, to a generous Pear & Gorgonzola Salad, to delicious New England Clam Chowder -- it was all so good. And we all agreed we need to go back to try some of the things we didn't this time, including their huge, head-turning desserts. This place is a winner, as the awards on display in their entry attest! Oh, and service was great. We'll definitely be back!

Portions are good. The food is great and unique in a diner type setting.

By Ronald W |

A throwback to the old diner days with a touch of California Hollywood as the location of a few series from the 80s. The restaurant is speckled with TV series paraphernalia the food is great. The atmosphere is fun and interesting. You won’t be disappointed.

Oh My!

By Vinster7 |

Stopped by for a bite to eat on a Sunday afternoon. We had a cup of clam chowder (very good). The wife had a Ruben and the pastrami was a delicious. I had a prime rib sandwich and OMG, was the prime rib delicious!

High value, filling, and tasty breakfast

By mshbnyehud |

I took advantage of the "breakfast all day" option at lunch, and ordered corned beef hash, topped by 2 over easy eggs and hash browns. The meal was delivered very promptly and super hot, direct from the kitchen. I had requested that both the corned beef hash and hash browns be cooked "extra crispy" but that's not exactly the way they arrived. Yes, there appeared to be an attempt to cook both a bit longer, but I would have liked the "crispy" to be more so. Oh well, everything was very tasty and you can't beat the price for a filling lunch (or was that breakfast :) ). Glad that this restaurant is part of AA Dining Program. I get my miles to boot !

Breakfast choices

By Cheryl D |

So many choices -but unfortunately I’m a fussy eater. My eggs have to be cooked a certain way or they go back. Not only was the service perfect, but I chose to build my own soft scramble - spinach, mushrooms, triple cheese eggs/roasted potatoes & toast. Made perfectly- A+ all the way.

The good, the bad, and the ugly.

By lespes |

What was good were the appetizers. The fried clams and clam chowder were truly exceptional. What was bad was the overcooked patty melt, the very expensive lobster roll with too much mayonnaise, and the Monte Cristo sandwich. The menu said of the Monte Cristo sandwich, which the waiter had assured us was one of their most popular items, "You will love it." Actually, I hated it. It was in fact greasy, and I only ate one half of four segments. What was ugly was that the server had no problem when I said that I didn't want to take the left overs home. He didn't bother to ask if I didn't like it, even though I had hardly touched it. I filled up on the macaroni and cheese side, which was pretty good. This great American diner isn't as great as we had hoped.

Good food

By Irene F |

I don't know if I already reviewed this restaurant. I've been hear several times with family, friends and casual business meetings. The food is pretty good. Lots of selection and not only that huge portions and priced just right. I call this my American comfort food. Their BLT can feed two people. Pot roast just right. So many to choose from. During the weekend go early... The wait time can be about an hour. Weekdays, go after the corporate lunch crowd or go before. Good food, nice staff and fast service.

Diner Feel and Huge Portions

By lliizzzzii |

Great comfortable diner feel. Clean, great waitress that visited our table often even when we were in the far corner, and my coffee cup always full. On a busy Friday night I didn't have to wait long for my booth. Food was great, I got the turkey sandwich and husband got the country fried steak. Piping hot and I didn't feel rushed either. Highly recommend.

Saw the TV show with Guy Fieri last night and went here today. WIN WIN

By dukeofargy |

We saw Guy Fieri's TV show on Diners and Dives, and decided to follow up on his recommendations here in San Diego. IT was well worth the trip. We thought it might have been a "dump", but it is quaint, clean, and truly a unique diner, with excellent food. The line ups to get in are indicative of the fact that others think so as well. I had the special, and I think I will try to emulate it when I get home. Definitely worth the drive to come here.

Great place

By Robbie B |

When I come to San Diego, I always stop by the Studio Diner for breakfast. They have a nice friendly staff and really good breakfast.

Chamring diner!

By Poh Soh |

Was here for a quick work lunch. Love the building! Food was good. My lobster pot pie had big chunks of lobster in it! Friendly service with a smile. Worth a visit.

Excellent Breakfast

By Frank B |

Classic diner with a regular crowd of military, business meeting and groups of moms. Superb breakfast burritos with hash browns and salsa!

Terrible because of the corned beef hash

By Jonesgo |

Hate to do it based on one dish as the rest was good BUT the corned beef hash was canned (the waitress confirmed it) and not even good canned corned beef hash (if that exists). At first my husband was put off by the very small portion but after tasting it, he didn't care.

Reel cute, really good grub

By Jim-Wilmywood |

This hip, fun and busy diner was our choice for Sunday brunch with our granddaughter who lives within walking distance. One order of Monte Cristo sandwich, one of 1,2,3 and a special gave us plenty of tasty food. The special was corned beef Benedict which we got with a ham slice instead of the Irish version was served with oven brown potatoes and Brussel sprouts. It was delicious but the sprouts were cooked beyond my taste. My pancake, 2 eggs and 3 bacon strips was very good and all I needed. Our granddaughter ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich which was much to finish but also delicious. Go early or prepare to wait; our wait was very short.

Quick Bite To Eat

By Kona93 |

Stopped here after walking out of another place. Sat at the counter. Diner atmosphere but clean. Service quick and friendly. Large food portions and reasonable prices. What we expected, no complaints.

No

By Camh50 |

I have been going here for many years. A friend's B.day. I ordered a hot Turkey sandwich. Friend ordered a Club sandwich. Our food sat on the counter for a least 10 minutes before our waiter gave us our food. By the way he was talking to the cute waitress. My sandwich was turkey flavor lunch meat. My friend said the bacon was good. Will not ever go back again.

2nd visit; 1st review?

By femaleboxer |

My whole family ate at Studio Diner 2 years ago on a family vacation, and we loved it. The food was great, serving sizes were spot on, the wait staff friendly, and the prices were okay. This time, the wait staff was the only true positive. I wish I could remember her name, because she was fantastic. But the food wasn't as good, the portion sizes seemed smaller, and the prices seemed even higher. Still, it was a pretty good meal!

The Best

By cabjr |

The Best BLT ever. I went with a client for lunch and had no idea of what to get. I ordered the Big blt. It was in fact the biggest blt I've ever had.

Good diner in San Diego

By TheAnvil |

This place has been featured on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives - with good reason; the food is excellent. My wife and I have been there several times and never been disappointed. Worth a visit if you've time to drop by.

San Diego Classic

By Steven D |

My go to place for a quick meal or a night out. A great place for a friendly meal. Everything on the menu is good- the fresh New England clams are one of my favorites, flown in daily. I have never had a bad meal there. One of my favorite restaurants!

Great Comfort Food after Sea World visit.

By sam280_ |

Day 5 into a 12 day vacation, and ready for some comfort food, this place did the job. Seeing it on tv on DDD, we went after a Sea World visit. We ordered the lobster roll, and the chicken fried steak. Added some cheese cake and cobbler for dessert, it is was a great meal. Super-great service provided by Toni. I would gladly suggest this place as a great dinner stop after a trip to Sea World or Belmont Park. Next visit I would like to see an official Ron Burgundy booth!

Come for the dool diner atmosphere and not the food

By ScottRoby |

We tried this place out mostly because the other couple had a coupon. When we first walked in, we were impressed by the great diner vibe and also when we read a little about the history of the place on the menu cover. The server was friendly and very nice. So yes, the atmosphere was great. There's not much in selection of beer or wine at least none that seemed appealing to any of us so we stuck with water. We each ordered entrees and while the presentation of the dishes were good, the food was just "ok" diner food. I mean we ate it and were full at the end but there was nothing great about it. When we left, we all described it as basic diner food. As another reviewer said, "Very average diner food in a unique building". My sentiments exactly.

A Triple D location worth the time

By TheoKojack |

Went for breakfast the day we landed early and headed to the wine country waiting for our hotel room. I had the chicken fried steak with a country gravy. Don't know what they do to the meat but it was the most tender chicken fried steak I aver ate. It was so tender that I didn't have to use a knife to cut through it. The gravy was as tasteful as I've ever made at home. The gravy was smooth and full of flavor, Tasted as if they used some of the fat from the breakfast sausage they used. I would go back just for breakfast. Stopped by again, mid afternoon on the way back to our hotel for a bite of lunch. I ate the lobster roll which was well prepared. Although it was a descent size sandwich I had a had time enjoying a $24.00 sandwich, a bit pricey. My wife had a Monte Cristo, was good and reasonably price.at $12.00. The service was excellent even though they were quiet busy the server found the time to make sure everything was done correctly and that we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal.

Good eats and large portions.

By David T |

Try try BLT it's huge. Fun place to eat and food is excellent. Shakes come with the metal mixing cup with the rest that will not fit in the glass.

Excellent lunch (with onion rings)

By db7477 |

Excellent sandwiches, service, smiles and onion rings! I had the Reuben and my friend the Pulled Pork with Randy Jones BBQ sauce. I'm glad we arrived before 11:30 because the line was way out the door when we left at 12:15.

Great Vibes, Amazing Servers

By Raz E |

I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner here a number of times and have never had a bad experience yet. The staff is always upbeat, comfort food is the norm and the ambiance of this Silver Steam trailer is awesome. If you are up for a fun, casual experience then this out of the way place in an industrial park area is for you. They are open 24-7 on weekends (not 24-70 every day anymore). Lunch for two at $20 total and we were both very full. How can you beat that. Check out the back patio. The characters that hang out there are worth searching for,

Breakfast

By Heather M |

Huge menu with lots of selections. Quick service and would go back! The meal was huge and delicious. Extra parking next to the building.

Excellent Breakfast

By gtownjewel |

We waited only 15 minutes and chose the outdoor seating. I must say the Zorba was the best omelet I have ever eaten! It was fluffy and the veggies were mixed in before cooking. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their chicken fried steak served with a biscuit and gravy. Two thumbs up for the Studio Diner!

Spur of the moment dinner

By Peggy G |

Well, it took a while to be seated which is unusual. People walking past and ignoring us and the people waiting behind us. Stood there for a good 2 minutes even though there were allot tables available. Finally got seated and after that it was fine. Our waiter was obviously handling too many tables, but he managed to get our drink order. I ordered a glass of wine and I must say the pour is poor. I don't think it was even 6 oz. so the wine is overpriced. I usually have a glass with dinner, so was disappointed in the size of the glass. My husband had the tuna melt which he said was just "ok" and I had the crab cakes which I would say were just "ok" even though they rave about them on the menu. They were a little over fried, but edible. Best thing I've had here is the chicken fried steak and the best thing my husband has had is a burger. Their breakfasts are usually very good. We'll probably come here for that from now on, unless my husband gets a real craving for a hot fudge sundae (he eats the whole thing by himself!)

Great Spot for Comfort Food

By OurEdventures |

If you're looking for big portions and less-than-healthy options, this is your spot. We sat right at the bar and watched the food come out over the counter. Monte Cristos, hamburgers, onion rings, tuna melts, plus shakes and more... This place is a fun spot for lunch with an old diner vibe.

Family of 6!

By dms750 |

We try to hit at least one "Diners Drive ins and Dives" everywhere we go. While in San Diego with the kids, we ate at Studio Diner. There were so many things to look at while we were waiting and the kids each got something different and shared. They were STUFFED when we left. Delicious Shakes! Delicious Food! Wonderful Staff! We tell everyone about it now.

Centrally located, great food and fun

By Snorris57 |

Love this little place which can be quite crowded for lunch during the week. Great menu with lots of choices ... soups, pie, and comfort food. The Monte Cristo is very good and you don't see it on many menus. The service is is not remarkable but they are fast! Definitely worth the trip but you may need to be flexible on your timing.

What a great place for breakfast!

By Flooj12 |

Lovely diner. Went here for 3 days for breakfast while staying at the Courtyard Central. French toast , corned beef hash both first class, All cooked fresh with no prepacked stuff. The hash browns are superb. Please dont miss this place when in the area!!

Plain good food

By Robert G |

Our family of six went for a late dinner. We waited about five minutes for a table to be set up. The service was prompt and orders were taken. The menu consists of options for breakfast, lighter selections like salads plus dinner selections. Our food came in a reasonable time frame, all were hot as well as being large portions. We enjoyed each of our selections. This place can get really busy, especially on the weekends with wait times up to an hour. Whenever we all get together for a family get together, we really enjoy coming here.

Okay Breakfast

By Tanq K |

I had breakfast here a couple of weeks ago, on a Sunday morning. Was seated at the counter. Took a while to get service. Food was good, tasty, but nothing special - typical breakfast line up on the menu.

Breakfast

By Alex E |

Took my oldest here and had the biscuits and gravy and he had the kids pancake. The pancake was huge and he wasn't able to finish and the half order of biscuits and gravy with fruit was perfect size. The price of the kids meal shocked me as it was more than my meal but the food was great! Definitely can share portions amo gst kids.

" Very Tasty Breakfast "

By David Miller |

My wife and I went to the Studio Diner in San Diego for breakfast and had a good time. My wife had Eggs Benedict which was two poached eggs on toasted a English Muffin. The eggs were topped with rich hollandaise sauce and your choice of country ham or fresh spinach. The Eggs Benedict was served with hash browns. My wife said the eggs were cooked perfectly and the hollandaise sauce was very tasty, I had something real simple but it was so good. I had the 1-2-3's breakfast which was 1 "reel" pancake, 2 eggs any style, and your choice of 3 bacon or sausage. The pancake was so light and fluffy and very tasty. Every time we go to the Studio Diner we are never disappointed. The service and the meals are very good.

Great food and large servings

By CLRD4TO |

Chili dog and fries was great. Also got a real ice cream strawberry milkshake!! My wife had the Eggs Benedict and they were served on a large slab of ham. All very good.

Hollywood & Vine

By Stacheck |

Do the time warp down Ruffin Road and feast on the neon-lighted Studio Diner. It's a authentic trip back to the 40's, in the middle of the Kearny Mesa Business District. Decorated with movie memorabilia serving comfort food with a upscale vibe.

Friendly and Plentiful

By DM1108 |

Service was spot on with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The food was a really good value with portions generous. Highly recommend for a casual eatery.

Good eats if you select carefully.

By dondytraveller |

Ate there 3 times on a business trip, lunch, breakfast, and dinner. Their chili is definitely a do-over, and their breakfasts are big and tasty. But, don't order breakfast food at night as it appears to be left over from the morning. Deep fried food has a very greasy taste and a lingering aftertaste. Avoid the deep fryer and you will enjoy your meal. Parking very limited. Service is fast and good.

Saw this diner on tv

By Calig82 |

Saw this place on Diners, Drive-in’s and Dives so my boyfriend and I decided to stop in. Food was ok..nothing to scream about, the service was ok..We ordered clam chowder, The Boob, and the California Cobb Salad. Decent prices and nice sized portions. However the establishment was a little stuffy inside. It was a warm day so it would’ve been nice to have A/C. We didn’t realize that they serve wine and champagne until we were almost done with our meal. Too bad the server didn’t make any drink recommendations when we first sat down. That’s our only critique

Good food

By Shruti t |

Good diner, with a lil studio setup, decent food and good ambience. Service is excellent. Not much to tell about the food. Good food with great names, see the pics.

Not impressed

By Andy432321 |

Looked it up on triple D food net. Ate at dinner time. Open faced Turkey San , sliced Turkey breast, not fresh but processed, brown gravy not turkey gravy😔 just not very good. Cheeseburger, frozen pre pressed patty, tasteless, actually made my stomach feel bad for 10 hrs. We had a few other things that were just average. The only thing I felt was good was the Mac & Cheese. Just bummed, was expecting better food. Maybe they were just having a bad day .

Amazing breakfast here!

By Sid k |

What a treat coming here for breakfast! I ordered the 1-2-3...one huge plate sized pancake that was amazing, a couple of eggs and bacon that was thick & crispy! Excellent coffee & great attentive service!

Historical diner

By clausrock |

I loved the atmosphere and the view. My wife swears by the pastrami sanwich. The meatlaof was ehh ok. It was a nice lunch and would try other items next visit. Enjoy

Nice place and good food

By Gustavo T |

That's it. Nice place and good food. It's good place to go with family and/or friends. They have a good menu and I had a San Diegan burger. Very good flavor and crispy fries. Recommended!

JUST LIKE IN THE OLD TIMES

By Jorge M |

The restaurant is located just next to a movie studio. It's been there for a long time and probably they have the same forniture ( not same waitresses jajajaaj). It's full every day and at lunch time, there is a line. Super friendly people and mainly, great food. Excellent salads, sandwiches, cakes, etc. Very much like a deli.

It was ...... "OK" ...... not even really ok

By Maria B |

Had the Monte Cristo. Deep fried in what seemed like some kind of tempura batter. Was a big grease bomb! Daughter had pancakes. Nothing special. Hubby had a Cobb Salad which he said was great - but how can you screw up a Cobb Salad. Love visiting the "Diners, Drive Inns and Dives" recommends but this one was our first disappointment.

Service what service

By FellowTraveler726413 |

We sat and had breakfast for about an hour the whole time we were here we got one cup of coffee the chicken-fried steak is Frozen and tastes that way.

Good Dependable Food

By Robert L |

Almost every time I visit San Diego (which is several times each year), I stop by the Studio Diner for breakfast. I just love the corned beef hash and eggs. The food and service is very good and the prices are fair. I have been to this place dozens of times over ten plus years and I've never been disappointed.

Great comfort food!

By Beth |

What a hidden gem! We had the pork chops dinner and the hot turkey sandwich. Both were amazing and the portions were huge. If you have room, get the chocolate cake! If you have Novalee as your server, that's an added bonus!

was very impressed

By SanDiegoJudi |

We went here because of an article in the UT about places to get good Lobster Rolls-we where not let down. I had the Lobster Roll and it was huge with so much meat, celery and the right amount of mayo on a New England frank roll--it was delicious and so worth the price. My husband had a San Diego burger and that was good also. Before are meal we had ordered the Onion rings and they where a hit. The batter was light and they where fried just right. It was a delicious meal. But most of all the waitress and helpers and everyone was friendly and courteous and answered all questions with a smile. I would go back again and gladly take company there when they visit.

great place for breakfast

By John K |

I usually go here for breakfast and it is absolutely great. Friendly, good food and if you get a chance visit the patio for a look at the statue!!!

A Pleasant Surprise!

By TravelinMan760 |

Choosing a restaurant based upon location can be a hit or miss. Our choice of the Studio Diner was definitely a hit. My son and I were checking out some properties early in the morning, and by the time 9:30 AM came around we were ready for breakfast or lunch. Studio Diner was close, so we went there. This 50s looking diner was cute but I certainly did not expect to be impressed. Boy, was I wrong. The moment we entered we were greeted by a friendly smile and welcome from Rachel as she showed us to our booth. Our waitress, Annette, was equally welcoming. Although I was tempted by the "movie reel" embossed pancakes, I selected the Studio Diner named egg dish and was quite pleased. I understand the Studio Diner is owned by someone in the video business, but he gets a special recognition for teaching his employees the fine art of "customer service". My son and I both enjoyed our breakfast and look forward to returning there soon.

Great food, great fun

Two picky teenagers = two satisfied customers. This place has great food and great décor, all at a great cost!

Late night deliciousness

By MrsK45963 |

We googled restaurants near us and this place came up. It was a pleasant surprise - the service and the food were top notch. I ate late night diner food - fries and a shake and it was perfect! I will be back. It was such a fun atmosphere too. Loved it !

I really never get tired of eating there.

By Ldiva001 |

I have been going to Studio Diner for years now and always took my kids to eat there. Now I am taking my granddaughters. There is just something about the place. We love the style of the building, it's like an old diner really cool on the outside. We usually have an amazing breakfast there. This time we tried lunch and probably still prefer breakfast. It is pretty noisy but not so much that you cant enjoy the wonderful food and the menu has something for everyone no matter what taste you have.. Even though this restaurant is normally really busy the service is still pretty good.

Better than Dennys for the middle of the night!

By Jessica S |

The atmosphere is fun, very diner, and the history as a studio is interesting. Food is good, but it is always too loud for a real conversation. This is the kind of place people choose to get together at, and it is fun, it just isn't the relaxed kind of atmosphere I prefer.

Lobster Pot Pie Special Friday’s ONLY

By Dancinkwn |

What a fabulously fun place! And I was there the morning after Valentine’s Day for breakfast which happened to be a Fri which was Lobster Pot Pie “Special”. The homemade onion rings are to live for with the tasty ranch dressing And ohhh...the chocolate malts! First time here! Sat at the counter and Enjoyed watching the wait staff smile and enjoy their jobs! Upbeat and a creative, enjoyable menu! I will definitely be back!

Awesome San Diego diner

By TheAnvil |

A bit far from tourist areas, but worth venturing out for a bite. This diner was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives for a reason - the food is delicious. Try this place after a day of hiking in Mission Trails or in the way back from Anza bott ego or Julian. You will not be disappointed.

Great choice for family dining

By Tampatricia |

We chose this diner because it was close to our hotel and had an extensive menu including kids meals for my grandaughter. The food was good but came with huge portions. I had a combo with soup (Jewish Penicillin) and a turkey sandwich. Huge sandwich....! Some reviews said prices were high but when you look at the plates piled high with food it didn't seem extraordinary. Service was super friendly and quick. The design is of an old style diner so was a fun atmosphere. I recommend it!

Very popular little diner

By Brian S |

I had read good things about this place. I tried the fish and chips. The dish was good. A very large portion of fish. The service was excellent. The waitress was very friendly and efficient. The place seemed to be very popular. It was busy when I got there and even busier when I left. There are a few other things on the menu that I would like to try.

Love this place

By Debra G |

This is one of our favorite places. Hubby loves the malts. We often order the stuffed halapinos and their lobster bisque is great. Helpings are very generous and service is grand. Try it and you will go back again and again! During the week they have different speaial every day.

Excellent diner!

By 843stevenv |

Kind of out of the way, but man what a find, and is it worth it! Great menu and everything is delicious, huge portions too! Great for families too. And open late

Just ok....

By BotRoad |

Had a very large group brunch/ breakfast here. First we were seated outside when it was cold and was never told we were sitting outside due to size. Food was ok - someone recd moldy cream cheese which was immediately fixed but that’s gross. Choices for breakfast were ok. Cool part was it’s open 24/7 like east coast diners. Too bad it didn’t taste better. Prices were fairly high too for breakfast. Would not go back proactively.

Huge brownie with ice cream

By sienna26 |

The huge chocolate brownie dessert came with ice-cream, whipped cream and lashings of warm fudge sauce. I have a sweet tooth and am a demon for sickly puddings. This definitely hit the spot. I couldn't finish it all but months later, still think about sinking my face into another one. If you don't have anything else here just come for this dessert. Well worth the visit 😋😋

Great place to eat. Fantastic service and great atmosphere.

By Troylb |

If you are a local in San Diego, you have to eat here at least once a month. Great food. Large portions and a diner atmosphere with a movie studio touch. If you are visiting, this needs to be on your list of places to visit. The diner was originally built because the tv/movie studio it sits on wanted a place to be able to eat any time of day or night. While it is now just open until midnight Sunday through Wednesday and 24 hours Thursday through Saturday, it is still just the same. Not only are the food portions large, so are the deserts. I have always been greeted with a smile and actually feel like it is my own personal "Cheers" restaurant. Try it, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Visiting a little bit of East Coast

By Vickie I |

Went mid day & the wait was about 25 minutes on a Friday. Fun atmosphere & authentic crab cakes. The chunky tartar sauce added just the right tang. My friend had the pastrami sandwich & said it was better than another local New York style deli/diner & less fatty. Definitely plan to go again.

Wonderful setting disappointing food

By CalforniaFishingBum |

I really wanted to like this place. The diner looks great. The setting is great and our waiter really tried. But the food...I had a portobello sandwich. I have never seen flattened portobello. Tasteless. The fries were like fast food fries. My husband had the Clint Eastwood burger. His remark was hmf. The kids had pancakes. Again my husband said hmf. Maybe we will try again for the sake of the waiters who kept coming back despite how long it took us to get the food.

California twist on an east coast tradition

By John H |

Server was efficient and friendly. Kept drinks refilled. Had the chicken fried steak. Nicely done, crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. Country gravy and mashed potatoes hit the spot. Green beans were fresh not frozen. My wife had crab cakes. Not as good as the steak. Needs more lump crab meat to match east coast. Cheesecake was good. Worth a visit when you are in the area. Next time I will try the lobster roll.

Great during my visit!

By Duane S |

I found this place on Trip Advisor and then was intrigued after seeing Triple D mentioned, so I decided to check it out. I was very pleased! The service was prompt and Christie was very friendly (of course she is from Louisiana so no big surprise there). I got the chicken-fried steak and was happy I did! It was very tender and the gravy was really good. The potatoes and beans were just OK, but not a critical part of the meal. I liked it so much I may have to come back again before I go home!

Fast service, delicious burger, fun atmosphere

By LMS2017 |

Delicious and fresh burgers. Arrived really hungry and got a table right away. The burgers were recommended so that's what we ordered. A nice sized patty, fresh, cooked properly with fresh accompaniments.

Stopped on the Way out of San Diego

By juliemar17 |

Found on a site that tracks food network visits. Classic diner. Solid food, big portions, large menus all day. Had the prime rib sandwich... The horseradish sauce makes it. Hubby had a club that was one of the largest I’ve ever seen. Some had a hotdog that looked tasty with fresh fruit. Would recommend... next to an old movie studio that does tactical military training now... interesting mix of regulars as a result.

Friday night

By Veronica M |

We love coming to the Studio Diner it has great food and awesome atmosphere. The clamp chowder is delicious don't miss it. This time we came after the movies to get desserts, I got a delicious chocolate shake and my partner got a hot fudge Sunday both worth the wait.

Won't be returning!!

By Coastieswife926 |

Well we saw this place on Diners, drive ins, and dives and it seemed pretty cool to check out. Well we got there it was pretty busy but they had two open seats at the bar. While about 6 or 7 different people walked past us we weren't acknowledged until about sitting there for 20 minutes. Usually I leave but my husband doesn't like doing that. So when someone finally came to us, there was no apology or anything. However she was pretty friendly. I ordered the sliders and onion rings, the onion rings were so GREASY AND OILY, they weren't crunchy at all. My husband ordered that pb&j thing which was pretty good. The food and the service was not good enough for a return trip or a recommendation. There's other places to spend money where we won't be ignored!!:)

Had disappointing breakfast

By RealityCheck |

When you can't cut your pancake with a butter knife you have kitchen problems; the hash browns didn't make the grade and the omlet, so-so; food was served on the waning side of warm. We won't go back. Management, you have problems in your kitchen, and if your responses that I have read to poor reviews is to somewhat skirt or downplay the complaint you'll never fix it.

good atmosphere and food

By Mcgee8275 |

We stopped in for the atmosphere and prior good reviews. We were not let down, the décor really sets the mood. The menu has good variety, I got the Monte Cristo Sandwhich....awesome!!!. Big milkshake and good flavors for them. Not always open 24hours tho...only one the weekends. Must revisit.

A Return Visit

By Robert L |

During our annual business trip to San Diego, our crew has breakfast every morning at the Studio Diner. This I enjoyed my corned beef hash and eggs, hash browns, tomatoes and coffee. Effie's service was great as usual. We'll be there again tomorrow before we move on to another city on Friday.

A San Diego favorite.

By Snorris57 |

Dine at Studio regularly and haven't had a bad meal yet. Great menu choices and large portions. Great prices too. It would be a 5 star if the service was better. Plan on waiting a few minutes for lunch seating from 11:30 - 12:45. Open 24 hours on the weekend. Great fish and chips, East Coast clams and Lobster Rolls. Great desserts too.

Wow, huge portions

By Darren M |

Wow!! The portions are huge. I had the three pancakes and wasn’t close to finishing them. Excellent food and service👍

Usual diner food

By Hollijean |

Saw this on triple D and decided to try it out. We all tried something different. I had the brisket chili and crab cake sandwich. Loved the chili but the crab cakes not so much. The portions are huge and almost everything could be shared with someone. We all got an ice cream malt to go and that was the best thing we had.

Good food, big portions

By KLD101 |

I have eaten here many times; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There can be a considerable waiting line (reservations are available for weekdays only, for large groups). Classic American dinner food, plus New England specialties such as fried clams and lobster rolls. Service is prompt, they will provide separate checks for a group, and you will almost always need a doggie bag to take home extra food off your plate.

Back again

By Robert L |

I worked in San Diego many times over the past 20 years and had breakfast at this place many times. Well I’m back working in SD again after a 3 year absence. I ordered my usual - Corned beef hash and eggs, hash brown, wheat toast and coffee. It was very good, again. Good service too.

Great menu, good food at a good price

By travelingman111 |

The menu has a lot of choices, some that you don't see at other places. I had a Monte Cristo , extremely filling and not real greasy. My wife had a prime rib sandwhich and it was one big slab of meat on a roll that made me envious. Prices were very reasonable and the service was excellent. I'll be back, I'm tempted to try the one pound burger the next time.

FUN! DELICIOUS! UNIQUE!

By Kimbo650 |

This restaurant was recommended by a friend so we gave it a try. The menu is so varied I think anyone will find something to love. I had a Ruben which was the best I have ever had. Trust me, I have had many! The pastrami was razor thin and delicious. Bread was perfect. Slaw was amazing. My husband had a burger. Again. Perfection! Our friend had the Greek Salad. In a diner you have to have "diner food" right? It looked wonderful and he said he loved it. Staff was 5 star. Ambiance is unique and wonderful! Make the trip if you're in the area. You won't be sorry

Average food, big portions, reasonable prices

By Dfettner |

Looks like the diners of back east. The food was average. I had a prime rib sandwich. It was not quite warmed up, cold in some places. The wife had the chicken Caesar salad. Kind of boarding. Daughter had the sliders. They looked and tasted better then the rest of the food we received. I don't think I would go back for the food. The service was very good. We were well taken of. The staff was friendly. If you want average food and a reasonable price with big portions. Then stop by and enjoy. If you want good food then go else ware.

Fresh and yummy

By ilovetotravvel2 |

Steve and I where there on a Sunday morning at 6am. It was not busy. It was very foggy driving to Studio Diner. I had the spinach omelet with fruit and english muffin. Breakfast was yummy. Thank you from Rita Bennett and Steve Nordstrom from Westminster Colorado

Worth a Second Trip

By Scolake |

Huge Triple D fan here. Came out to visit our daughter at SDSU. Our first day here she had class all morning, so we decided to hit a Triple D joint for early lunch. Food was great, service was great and the environment was too! Next day is Saturday and daughter wants to go out for breakfast. Looked around for options, but decided we liked Studio Diner so much that we would take our daughter back there.

Funky old fashioned Diner

By travelinman018 |

Great food and service in n this movie studio themed diner. Very retro! The menu was extensive and we ended up eating there several times.

clam chowder

By halfretired |

Clam chowder was top notch. Tuna salad lacked favor - both the tuna and the blue cheese dressing. Place was packed and noisy for lunch

Honest Great Comfort Food

By GoodToGoGirl |

Studio Diner delivers really good comfort food at reasonable prices. We tried the Fried Pickles (excellent!), the Monte Cristo (unlike any we've ever seen), and the Reuben. All were really good. Their dishes are above what is expected, and there is some imagination and good execution. Our server was very engaged and helpful. We look forward to going back!

Delicious and a good value

By Catperson C |

I had a most delicious omelet here. I also ordered a bagel and it was perfect and huge plus a delicious pancake shaped like a reel of film. Would definitely return. I sat at the counter and had a nice chat with a local. Made me feel right at home.

Best food in San Diego

By RacineHorsinaround |

We have never had a bad meal here and we hold business mtgs here regularly. Love their Mac and Cheese, their shakes are old fashioned delicious, the peach cobbler with cinnamon and alamode is divine. Everything has that homemade comfort food taste with supreme service.

An excellent diner for breakfast

By Frank B |

Everytime we travel from the East Coast to Balboa Avenue we eat at Studio Diner. Great Breakfasts - the police are always in here eating. What better review can a breakfast place have!

Fantastic Diner Experience

By Paul B |

I absolutely love this place. Old time diner atmosphere and very friendly waiters. I would highly recommend this diner breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Transported back to the east coast

By Early B |

The owner of the diner bought an old diner back east and moved here for his local movie staff to have 24/7 food. Turns out the old diner wouldn't meet local codes, so rather than giving up, he had an all new diner made. What's special? The diner is new and classic. The setting is all movie studio themed. The food is good. Nothing else like it in town.

Retro diner…

By Traderjoey |

If you’re looking at the online menu, it is not accurate and has not been updated since before Covid. Breakfast I had was all right, the blueberries were not baked into the pancake, which I prefer, I think I would go with the French toast next time. Eggs and bacon we’re fine. Very few gluten-free options, although they did have some bread that was GF. Cute place, easy parking. Pretty quick service

Perfect way to end a day

By Mai-and-mel |

We found this place on Yelp - looking for a place close to out hotel after a long day at Sea World. We got there a little after 8pm. The diner menu was also something that would seem to appeal to everyone. Open 24 hours seemed also perfect. We all loved this place and here's why: -We were warmly greeted by a hostess -seated in a comfortable booth and quickly visited by our server -great menu that everyone was able to get what they wanted -food was great! +beef brisket chili was hearty and smokey (as properly described in menu) +chicken noodle soup was right what my upset stomach needed (good amount of chicken, carrots, elbow noodles, onion; also given two small oyster cracker bags that were perfect additions) +chicken pot pie with mashed potatoes and string bean all tasted fresh and delicious *pot roast had great gravy with mashed potatoes on top was savory and good (maybe a little too much celery though) Our server was awesome; constantly checking in with us to make sure everything was good and also offered to go hot tea for me. I would highly recommended this wonderful place. We were too full to try any desserts but their shakes and cakes looked delicious.

Conflicted

By Liz C |

I was so excited to go to this place that had been recommended by Guy Fieri, but left with a "meh" on my mind. The place itself looks cool, of course has the total Diner vibe, but the waitstaff, working when I was there, honestly needs some training in customer service. I've waited on many tables in my day, and no matter how crappy I felt, I had a smile on my face and made my customers want to come back and dine where I worked. My person, although only had a few tables to work with, took forever to even just get a cup of coffee over to me, not to mention the glass of water. My meal was almost done before I got the water. And I'm the kind of person that isn't the naggy customer, because I know exactly what those are like... so, I just waited. When the stuff I ordered finally got to me, unfortunately it didn't come with a smile, which was really disappointing. Working in such an iconic diner, you would think would be fun, but this poor waitstaff looked like it was a real chore for them. Not sure what is going on behind the counter or kitchen, but it was just not as great a dining experience as I was expecting. Oh, and the food, well, it was maybe a 7/10. Good biscuits and gravy, but the hashbrowns were flavorless and dry. The coffee.. well, it was typical diner coffee, so I would say "good" for diner java. Oh well! Hope you have a better experience if you go.

Make it a point to visit the Studio Diner when in San Diego

By Jim007LV |

Not your typical diner! A Hollywood studio themed diner. Breakfast served all day; plenty of lunch selections to satisfy everyone in your party. Fast, attentive wait staff. Ample parking, and overflow spaces on the street. Open 24 hours on the weekend.

My husband and I went for brunch.

By swesolowski |

My husband had the prime rib sandwich and it was a nice healthy portion, with waffle fries. I had the sliders, with fries. The meal was delicious, and so were the mimosas! Nice quaint diner atmosphere, friendly waitress and movie memorabilia.

Wonderful family lunch

By 13521F2 |

We were all able to get what we wanted with our any problem what so ever. Parking at this time of day was a bit hard had to drive around till some one pulled out as all parking lots in area were full from business. We finally found one across the street had a nice walk over . We weren’t going to give up. Have eaten here few times over the years for family get together and for business meeting on outside patio area. We went at lunch time so we had ten minute wait know time at all and we had a nice clean booth and waitress was right there with smiles and asked if we like a drink while we looked over today’s lunch menu. She got all the orders right and keep our drinks filled which was nice as it was dry hot day and it was refreshing to have our drinks refilled with out having to ask and with them being busy it was nice that she kept going by we saw she keep other drinks and meals in toon as well. We had soup, potatoe skins wonderful done ,grilled cheese sandwiches fries and chicken strips and fries ice tea . No deserts today as we had phone call and had to leave but they have great ice cream deserts next table looked so good. Overall visit was very nice pleasant experience and staff was outstanding even though they were very busy. We have had breakfasts and luncheons and dinners there and all the food and service as always beeen very good today was outstanding once again. We shall drop by once again when we are in area because of service and the meals are very enjoyable. Bathrooms were clean.

Business lunch

By Peter W |

This wonderful diner is just around the corner from where I was recently working, so very useful for a business lunch. The food is great, some good typical American food, from sandwiches through to full meals. The half sandwich combo taken with their clam chowder is especially recommended. Sometimes during the peak hours you have to wait for a table, but never for more than 10 minutes. For a great experience, take a seat at the bar. The staff are really friendly and makes the whole experience worthwhile

Family Christmas trip

By MissesB1 |

This is the second time we dined here. I suggested it since I was so impressed with the diner the first time, we wanted the whole family visit. The menu is quite diverse, the wait staff is so professional, and the concept is so California. Lol . Our family has very different tastes, and everybody was happy with their food.

Hidden jewel

By Carl B |

This unique studio design of a dinner is somewhat hidden. Its located in a business area and surprisingly busy on weekends. The entire menu is open to your craving ..breakfast, lunch or dinner. The service is friendly and a clean and comfortable environment. What surprised me is that it sits on cliff. There is an outside patio dinning area. They are open 24/7.

First visit to this diner. We had breakfast. There are lots of items on the menu and all looked good. There may be a wait on a Sunday morning, but it's worth it. Good service. Good food. Friendly atmosphere. They have a counter as well as booths here.

Customer Interaction

We got to the Diner around 4:45 PM and the place was nearly empty. Our waitress, Alexis Nic M, was very accommodating when we requested a different table (air-conditioning was a little too much), and very polite. We ordered coffee and a breakfast and she returned with coffee immediately. However, when we tried the coffee it was obvious it had been sitting there most of the day, it was a little better than lukewarm. We tried and failed to get her attention, but were unsuccessful. When our meal was served, we asked for another cup of coffee and informed her that the coffee was old and warm. She went right to making another pot and promised to bring us hot coffee. That was the last we saw of her until we finished our meal. She and the entire wait staff lingered at the front counter during our entire meal, occasionally meeting with other customers coming in, or disappearing in back. We'd given up on hot coffee with our meal, and waited for the check. When we got the check, it was $9 dollars for 2 cups of undrinkable coffee. Alexis Nic M finally came for our card and I remarked that 9$ was a little much for cold coffee, for which she turned away and didn't acknowledge. However, when she returned the receipt, gave me the glance that let told me she heard. Never an admission of 'I'm sorry, I forgot' or even the 'ol 'thanks for coming'. Being friendly and polite evaporated, but she was tipped just the same. The eggs, sausages and hash browns were great, even the toast was toasted and not the warm half toasted bread you get with most restaurants. I give the cook staff 5 stars, Alexis Nic M, Nothing.

Lunch

I went here specifically to get the Cape Ann Massachusetts fried clams (whole belly) that the fly in fresh. They are the next best thing to being there! Very tasty. I sat outside on the patio but the inside atmosphere is nice. Service is friendly and fast and the menu is varied with a lot to choose from. Try a milkshake, they are delicious!

Great local diner with outstanding breakfasts

Studio Diner is one of my "must" visits in San Diego. Located just off the 15 and Clairemont Mesa Drive, they are open 24 hrs. They have a unique history and a funky building that reminds me of an Air Stream trailer. The place is always busy in the mornings and for lunch with a full and interesting menu. It's definitely worth your time to find this gem.

Great Diner Food, 24 Hours, Terrible Parking

By Brian S |

My best tip is to go at weird hours. Food and service are great but they have parking for only about ten cars. Some park in clearly marked no parking areas on the street but I would not advise that given the aggressive nature of SD parking enforcement and the level of fines. I had blintzes which were perfect. I've had their French Toast which was noteworthy. Full menu, 24 hrs. San Diego talks big about night life but starts rolling up the sidewalks at 8PM so a place like this is about it for dining after 9pm and they do deliver great food at great prices. Just go on off-peak times to find a place to park.

A favorite!!

The Studio Diner was shown on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives ----- and it should be! It is a former movie studio site and the food is AMAZING. Best diner I have ever been to. Every time I am in San Diego I eat there. They have a huge menu, wonderful breakfast and lunch options, and of course desserts and milkshakes. Their patio is large and very nice. Definitely try it if you are in the area!

Eating at counter advice

There were stools available at the counter. We sat at the first ones inside the door. Every time the door opened, we felt the cold coming in. We moved to the other end, and all was fine! In front of us was a small sink. We saw the manager wash her hands with soap twice, and 2 men washed their hands once. This impressed us. We had an omelet and oatmeal. Both were excellent. The food came out really fast! Our tall male waiter was okay - he needs to learn to smile and act like he cares. We'll definitely be back.

Fantastic diner food! HUGE portions. dessert always looks good, but I am totally full every time from my dinner. Typical diner food, cool subway car decor. Plus it's on a real working studio!

Very poor atmosphere

Good American comfort food. But the lights over the tables were SUPER SUPER BRIGHT, felt like one needed a hat and sunglasses to sit at the tables and eat. Staff said lights could not be dimmed. Very uncomfortable.

Decent food, but could use a little facelift

Stopped for a quick late lunch after running errands. Hadn’t been here in years and had a good experience first time. Was slightly disappointed this time. Place wasn’t busy but service was slow. Food was mediocre at best and presentation was a little sloppy. We had sliders and meat was overly greasy, even for sliders. Wish I had taken pictures.

Awesome American Food

Me and my boyfriend visited this place after seeing an episode of Diner,Dives and Drives thru on the food channel. It was definitely worth it. I had the lobster roll with onion rings which was simply divine. Very hot and fresh! I topped it off with a strawberry milk shake that tasted homemade and not premade like other places. My boyfriend had the Monte Cristo that he enjoyed so much, he left the restaurant covered in powdered sugar! On our next trip to La Jolla, I would definitely visit this place again. Service was quite speedy!

Great food, pretty busy
