We went here for a family celebration and had sooo much fun! Our chef was very skilled and so entertaining. The food was really delicious and was prepared in front of us! It was actually thrilling to see the chef working with the fire right in front of us! We meet David Sumo who came to our table personally and was so friendly and caring of our dining experience! We will definitely be back! Truly a fun and yummy evening!

We’ve done hibachi grill dinners before so it’s not new but my daughter wanted something for her birthday dinner that would be an experience as well as good food and good fun with family. Sumo was a good version of the hibachi grill. It wasn’t the slickest presentation I’ve seen but the menu was more varied than most and we had a really good meal... enjoyed the cooking show with a chef who was amusing and just had a lot of fun in general. They do add an up- charge for the fried rice instead of plain white rice and I hadn’t seen that before. So they have some different ways of upping the final bill but it was a good experience overall. And they brought my daughter a nice ice cream sundae and sang happy birthday so that was appreciated.

What a fun place! Very entertaining expert chef! Excellent food and excellent service! They even allowed us to bring a birthday cake, refrigerated it, put candles on it and brought serving plates etc. This is our new go to for celebrations!

This is my first time here an the service sucks. I will not be coming back ever, I will not be giving it a second chance ,our waitress went an told the manager that we had to order combo's or we will be charged, we came for the chicken fried rice and our waitress said they weren't making it an there is 15 of us ,we are paying good money to be here, and some cook is supposed to cook in front of us an we been waiting for a hour, we asked our waitress what's going on an they said we are waiting on bowls ,this place is the worse .

On a ladies night with my girlfriends to celebrate Mothers Day, we decided to try out Sumo for the first time. We arrived at 7 and our drink orders were not even taken until 720 when one of my friends had to complain to two different people. Half of our party received there drinks 10 minutes later but myself and my two friends did not receive them until 740. (All I ordered was a water) The soup came and it was basically just chicken broth, no tofu or see weed. The salad was good. The fried rice was bland. I had to add sauce and salt. The veggies had no flavor. The 25$ steak I ordered had no flavor and even though I asked for well done it was still pink inside. It was also very tough and hard to chew. There was not one component to this meal that had an Asian taste to it. Not to mention that our server barely ever came back and we ended up using a near by table to pile up our dirty dishes. The manager did agree to comp our cocktails and we did appreciate that but at this point the meal was not salvageable. I don't think any of us would ever go back.

Great atmosphere and excellent chef ! Fun experience and food was amazing. Highly recommend the chicken fried rice ! Had the ribeye, husband had the teriyaki chicken both were cooked to perfection with lots of flavor . This place never disappoints.

AJ Gonzalez our Chef was Outstanding and entertaining! Service was good. Table and drinks were good. A bit pricey, but overall an excellent experience!

There is nothing standing out of this place... Food is good and in good quantity. Service was good without being exceptional. This is a “sure shot” place. It won’t blow anybody away, but everything is going to be just good!

We went on a Saturday night. One waitress for two large tables. The management set her up for failure. Took nearly 20 minutes to get soup and salad. Food was better than average.

Great Place to meet people and enjoy great food. Kid friendly and relaxed yet slightly upscale feel.

Our first and last visit. We sat at the sushi bar. Sushi "chef" was overwhelmed. We ordered drinks and water. Bartender seemed annoyed she had to come back for good order. Ordered chef platter of sushi. Food came. No explanation. Finally, asked another manager type for water. He wanted us to have gin instead. Trying to be funny. Ordered shrimp tempura appetizer. We waited so long (20-25 minutes)we asked for check without it. Then he wanted us to do shots of tequila. Not funny anymore. Check came appetizer was billed to us. Asked to have it removed. Appetizer arrived. They boxed it up and then took it off our bill. Took back to our hotel. Wrong appetizer anyway. Dirty dishes were stacked on the bar next to me. Sushi chef had no back bar help. Constantly had to leave for supplies. He was thawing fish on the counter!

Service and food are why I write reviews, and I've written a lot of reviews. I also always ask my companions for the evening what they thought. So tonight we have a split review amongst the friends. The server started out as very attentive, however, as the night went on we were abandoned and she forgot our steamed rice. When we approached her about it she gave the excuse that she was taking the order of the other table. Keep in mind by this time, we already had our soups and the chef had already made the fried rice for everyone else and was on the course of vegetables. I actually think he was already starting meats by the time she brought it to us (only because we asked). The chef was ok, not near as entertaining as some of the others we were watching, and the food (my food was mediocre). A few folks had to ask for theirs to be re-cooked. One of my friends here had the Calamari Steak and he felt it was outstanding. A few others at the table said to give it another try another night and ask for Tommy or Cindy, they are fantastic and urged us to try it one more time. I'll think about it ;)

These folks get it right every time. I actually modified my own personal fried rice to mimic their's. Sushi is very well done (texas roll/philly roll), and the seared tuna is fantastic.

Andrew gave a great show, the steak was like butter and the night was great! Plentiful, fresh and yummy. Great cocktails too!

I'm not really picky when I go out but I'm not coming back to this place. Over cooked food, forgotten orders, long wait... We ordered at 5:30.... Food was ready around 7:00. Hopefully they'll improve

The management and waitress are the worst on the face of the planet. We have our vehicle broken into and we asked for our food to go. Instead of them making quick they decided to cook it in front of other guest while we filed a police report. Then charged use 277 dollars no discount or anything. When we asked for a discount they told us they cant do anything and to take a card. We took a card and the number on the card is directly to the waitress.... who then stated that they would give us a refund if we brought the food back within thirty minutes..... are you kidding me. Does this sound right to anyone.... ooo by the way this is the third time this has happened to us personally at this place. They also said that the reason that they don't give refunds to people that have the vehicles broken into is because it happens "too often".... Listen Sumo is cool but there are other restaurants that actually care about their customers and their safety. Sumo has made it very clear that they do not care and will never care. O by the way its also not cheap to eat here... all in all we spent 277 dollars on food that was cooked in front of other guest while we where filing a police report, got at least 500 dollars cash stolen, and the waitress are actually the worst. I wouldn't know what the management is like since they wouldn't let me speak to them. All in all I would say negative 10 stars and have fun filing for Chapter 11...

The place is dirty, the food is horrible, the service worst, the "cook", feels like a clown, instead of cooking he keeps making jokes that the once one who caras is himself. The food has no taste, the have si racha sauce instead of sesame sauce, which they don't have.

We came here to celebrate my birthday. This was our first time here. The food, atmosphere and experience were great, too. Thank you to our Chef, Ricky! He had us laughing and enjoyed every minute of it.

My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner here!! Everything was delicious!!! Be prepared to drop a bit of coin on your dinner. This place is NOT cheap. But it's lots of fun!!! Definitely make a reservation, (you make them online) and when you get to the restaurant, check in with the hostess and tell her you want an EXPERIENCED chef. Ours was not very talented. Dropped utensils... couldn't get flames to light or stay lit....We had fun anyway because he was nice. But if you're taking kids and want the "whole show" tell them to sit you with an experienced and entertaining chef. We will definitely visit again!!

Group of 4 for dinner on a Friday around 6pm. Arrived without reservations and seated immediately, but the hostess crammed us into a table that already had six other people instead of putting us at one of many empty tables. In typical fashion for Teppan-Yaki style restaurants, there is a team of servers separate from the chef. While we found the chef to be very entertaining, the other servers seemed overtasked and missed items. Portion sizes were appropriate.

This place is so fantastic! Not to mention the food is to die for! The chefs are wonderful entertainers and are very funny. I will be visiting this place very soon again!

Not impressed. The food was good enough and the wait staff was good. However, the chef, Juan, was less than entertaining. He didn't seem like he enjoyed his job. He was very grim and unenthusiastic. I asked for a very well done steak and received my steak still red. For having spent almost $100, I expected a better experience.

Came in to celebrate our sons 1st birthday with Chef Tommy and like usual he did an outstanding performance from start to end.. What can I tell u about his cooking for those who know him it’s so delicious and on point everytime you can tell he puts the special love into his job… If ur new and want to try Sumos I e been a customer for over 10 years and highly recommend it with Chef Tommy taking care of you you’ll love it! Thanks Tommy we had a good time appreciate it always Cruz Family!

What made this place great was our cook..JESSIE! He was amazing!! Great personality..very friendly and accommodating!! Never have I ever had such great service at any restaurant...anywhere!!! Jessie is a great asset to this place and his food was DELICIOUS! Everyone at our table that night agreed that he made it worth the wait..travel..and $, great job Jessie!!

Executive Chef Tommy was sooooo funny and such an amazing chef. The food was delicious!!!! He had us laughing so hard the whole time. It made the birthday we were celebrating that much more memorable. We will definitely be back! Customer service all around was fantastic from the reservation phone call to a call to confirm the day of and even arriving. They took the birthday cake we brought and we’re happy to store it then serve it later. We really had a great night! It’s the only hibachi place in San Antonio I would return to! The others have a lot to learn. Sumo is THE hibachi place in town!

We stopped in one evening for dinner, and were disappointed in the overall experience from this establishment. The waiter Brandon is dishonest, and lazy. He forgot to turn on the grill and caused an extra 20-30 minutes to be added to our dinner in which they charge extra for things like fried rice, or removing vegetables. Additionally he STOLE extra $10.00 on the bill after they already IMPOSE A MANDATORY GRATUITY of 18%. David the manager seems to careless about the fact that his staff is stealing from customers regardless of the amount, and will "talk" to Brandon about it. I would recommend you look over your receipts carefully and check your account a few days after visiting. We go to our local Hibachi/Sushi place regularly and the experience is completely different with no theft, mandatory gratuities, and extra charges. David you handled this situation poorly and you should be reprimanded for this transaction and Brandon should be let go.

If it wasn't for Gus (the general manager) making sure our drinks were filled and our sushi got out I would have lost my mind. It seems like the kitchen was not very functional, our chef Aaron unfortunately did the exact same show that I recorded last time I was here and he asked the server to bring back 3 items for the kitchen which he forgot >.<. Just dissapointed me. I also found out today that they split the tip with the server 50/50...... the only way to find out is to ask or read on the veeeeeery bottom of your check in small font, it's not on the menu at all....... ALSO it was like 85 degrees in there very dissatisfying. I SHOULD have asked for tommy, at least the manager Gus nieto handled my complaints and made my night. He needs to be promoted :(

I went there for my birthday, it was our first time there. The Chef was great he put on a very good show for our table, the food is cooked right in front of you. I ordered the steak in which had great flavor the vegetables were awesome and my husband ordered the seared tuna, there was so much food. Just so happens that the other people sitting at our table was celebrating their birthdays also, the waiter and other waiters came out and sang to use and gave us ice cream with whipped cream and a candle. The other reason I didn't give 5 stars is it did take a while to order our food, but our waiter Jimmy made sure our drinks were always filled. I would go back for sure!

Planned my drive from New Orleans to San Antonio with the assumption that I would be eating at a Benihana near the hotel I had reserved. An empty parking lot should have been a clue. The sign on the door stated that they served until 10 pm. I walked in just before 9 and was told that the dining room was closed and only the sushi bar was serving. The place seemed just about empty, with a few others sitting at the sushi bar. No problem? Had to ask twice for a beer, even though I was sitting at the bar. I tried to order the simplest and safest food; miso soup, seaweed salad and tempura shrimp, since it seemed that I was interrupting a private party. The waiter appeared from the kitchen after a few minutes and said that he had been distracted and forgot to place my order. He offered to comp the soup and salad. Good thing, because food and service would not have been worth the menu prices. Even stranger, after I was told that the dining room was closed, a teppanyaki chef appeared from the kitchen and prepared meals for people in the dining room. At that point I just wanted to leave as soon as possible.

Small sushi menu but chef will take requests which is really nice!!! Generous portions . Just I-10..former Benihana location with local owership

This was an amazing place. Our chef was Tommy and he provided us with excellent service and the food was tremendous. While looking at some of the reviews they seemed negative so we were skeptical of trying, but none of the reviews seemed true in the time we were there. The service was good, everyone was nice and polite, and the food was the best i’ve ever tried. The hibachi show was as well the best i’ve ever seen, it was over all an amazing environment and experience. I highly recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for a fun time and a yummy bite!

We decided to try this place after they had been open for a while, having seen the place change over a couple of times since it was a Benihana. Our first impression upon entering was that they had changed into a sports bar. If we had not spent the money on the Groupon and made the reservations, we would have turned around and left immediately. We came to see the chef show, not a giant TV screen! Next, we noticed that most people were dressed excessively casually, to include shorts and T-shirts. If I'm going to pay this kind of money, I expect a classy atmosphere. If I want shorts and T-shirts, I'll go to a barbecue roadhouse. Thankfully, we had an outstanding chef who cooked our food to perfection. He helped make up for an otherwise bad experience. Other than him, the service was poor and slow. We also had very good table companions, which helped kill time by getting to know each other while waiting far too long for something for which we all had reservations. Unless they fix these problems (especially the TV issue), we will never be back.

We have had the full-blown dinner experience at least twice. The food was delicious and plentiful! We love going for happy hour for sushi and a couple of drinks. The sushi chef is great and the wait staff at the bar provide great service! We'll be back!

Our truck was broken into and robbed of my son in laws wallet, credit cards, driver’s license and cash. When we told the restaurant staff they were real snarky and said that they can’t be responsible for their parking lot. So beware and eat there at your own risk. For the price of the food you would think that they could hire a security guard to monitor the parking lot at night! We will never eat there again and neither will any of our friends. The SAPD Officer who responded to the break I was very nice.

My wife and I dined here an evening in early June. We waited at the table for a chef. When our waitress was delivering our soup she tripped and spilled half a bowl on my wife. It took another server to even bring us towels to clean my wife's chair. No apologies nor recognition of VERY SLOW service! The Peruvian lady chef did a good, but not great, job with her skewers. She had to call on a waitress to bring us white steamed rice several times. Overall, the dinner tasted good but the service was below par. I cannot in all conscience say this was a memorable meal. It was average at best!

This was Benihana's in a past life, so we expected the same experience and it was pretty much that way. We noticed the higher prices, as mentioned in other reviews, as well as the gratuity already added - not the best practice, but we don't eat here very often. What we did enjoy though was the special attention to our special occasion, having a family with different age levels represented can be tough, but everyone enjoyed their experience. Our meal was delicious, the chef was friendly and our server was fairly attentive. We made our reservation through their website, and just received an offer for the next time we dine, so I think we'll be back there in a few weeks.

As Teppanyaki restaurants go, this was as good/fun as any. My young grandchildren had never been, so we booked the entire table for our party of 8. The staff were personable and entertaining. The food was good and plentiful.

Had to meet a ex- coworker so had some time to kill , SO My better half said , Hibachi sounds good , SO I googled one knew the nicer area of San Antonio area would have a better selection so off we went . The food and company was great was the first time every had a great time just getting to eat and hear stories about other places . Learned some things enjoyed great cooking and entertainment from “Eric” . Thanks agin.

I have to recommend the upgrade from the regular rice to the chicken fried rice! My daughter and I always have a great time. I get the adult steak and she gets the kids chicken. We like to go early because the whole dining experience last about 1.5 - 2 hrs especially if you have a full table or food allergies. I was surprised that the chefs were not all asain but I love the food and can see past it. The tip is split between the chef and server and I do not think that's right because often I feel the waiter/waitress did not earn what I am tipping to give to the chef.

I can hardly tell the difference between most Japanese Steakhouses. I find Benihana's to be the most consistently good. Sumo looks pretty much like every other Japanese Steakhouse. The first thing I really noticed was the prices were higher than the Benihana's closest to my home and I was a little surprised by that because I usually consider Benihana to be the gold standard. Then my wife noticed that a gratuity was added to parties of 4, which I also thought was kind of strange because most places don't add it unless the party is at least 6. No biggie, but definitely something I wanted to keep in mind when it came time to pay the bill. The place was busy and the service was just so so from the waitress. The chef we had was outstanding though. He really put on a good show with his knife skills and other tricks. He was also very talkative and seemed like a nice guy. The food was all pretty good/consistent for what I expect from a Japanese steakhouse. When we received the bill I noticed the tip was added so was mindful not to double the tip I was paying. The thing that really annoyed me was when I got the credit card receipt to sign there was a tip line with no note of "additional tip". I find this deceitful because I am sure many people don't notice the added tip on the itemized bill and end up tipping twice. I don't appreciate that one bit. Another family had already tipped the chef in cash and were surprised when they were charged a tip on the final bill. I believe management removed the extra tip for them. In summary, the food was good, the show was good, service was so so and they have a system that could easily cause someone to tip twice the amount they intended (pays to read the small print-thanks to my wife).

We came on a road trip. When we entered, it was empty with loud music. We were seated with two other parties. While we ordered the music got much better. The soup was in a larger than expected bowl, the salad was great, the chef was a sweet girl that did a great job, and my only regret was not ordering the filet. It was one of the most beautiful filets I have ever seen and was ordered by the man next to me. I will come back for one of those. Good place to eat.

Excellent service. Great tasting food. My son really enjoyed the fun from the chef! The Ying Yang drink is delicious!

Awesome place for great food and entertainment. Will be coming back again with family. It is pricey but worth it.

We made reservations and upon arrival were promptly seated. The waitress took our drink order then the wait started. It took about 15 minutes for her to take our order then about 20 minutes to get our soup and salad. There were probably only three chefs so we sat and waited on hard wooden chairs about 45 minutes for the chef to get to our table. He was really good and entertaining and the food was good but overpriced. We had hibachi chicken and steak. Beware the tip is already in your check which was fine with us but I would not have wanted to tip double!! We probably will not go again.

My wife and I ended up at SUMO's because our first restaurant choice was really crowded and hot inside. We stopped at SUMO's because the parking lot was not full. This restaurant was definitely better than the one we originally planned to go to. Since we didn't have a reservation, we had to wait about 20 minutes until there were enough patrons (nine of us) to fill a cooking station. Once seated, the experience began building up to the Chef actually preparing our meals. The Chef's assistant was very slow. Additionally, I had to ask for lemons for our water four times and a wine glass refill three times. We had Salmon and Crab Sushi as an appetizer, followed by soup (not hot) and a salad. The Chef was fantastic (especially igniting the fire on the grill) and prepared a delicious and steaming hot meal while entertaining us at the same time. Try the Emperor's Dinner (8.5 oz Tenderloin with large lobster tail). We had so much food left that we took two "to go" containers home. The atmosphere is great, our table-mates were friendly as well as the neighboring tables. This dining experience was definitely a great Father's Day Treat. I will go there again despite the slow pre meal service we encountered.

Food was delicious and the chef put on quite a show that left the 6 and 8 year old grandkids amazed. Bit pricey but would come back again for special occasions.

We went in to enjoy my sisters 29th bday. We made reservations were seated and waited an hour for drinks. We were ignored by our waitress half the night. Manager Racheal and Chef Cynthia were amazing. Really needs some staff updates

We went for dinner on a Saturday night. The food was really good but unfortunately that was all that was good. The staff was unorganized. I went to the bar to ask for a beer and they only had 22 ounce bottles. The bartender didn't give me a glass nor did she open the pop top. Once we sat down it took about an hour for the chef to start cooking even though we had reservations . During the wait a waitress took our order and pressured everyone to upgrade to either more expensive meat or rice. There was also an ac vent directly over the table so everyone was freezing since it was cold and rainy outside. Lastly, they automatically add 18% gratuity to the check because the table seats 9, even though I was in a group of 4. Will definitely try somewhere else next time.

Went for a birthday dinner!! The cook was great staff very friendly. They did get a little rude to my parents that we ran 8 minutes late.... that upset me very much but they appologized and immediately got us a table as we were walking out! Food is delicious, drinks are ridiculously priced! $600 for 5 adults and 1 child! SO DONT LEAVE THOSE CHECKBOOKS AT HOME!!! YIKES!! It was great but for that I'd rather go to BOHANAN'S!!!!!

Worst service ever! Over hour wait time, chef. Chef. Tommy sneezed couple times & he almost (I think he did) spit in fried rice while talking alot. The food was VERY expensive 4 the quality. Very Bad & shady atmosphere.

We celebrated our office Christmas party here last night. Based on the reviews, I did not have the highest expectations. However, we thought the Hibachi grill would be fun. It was an overall awesome time. If the building was in a little better shape, I would give it one more star. Our waiter was Jake and he was very prompt and attentive. Our Chef was John and he did an outstanding job! We sampled everything: steak, chicken, shrimp, lobster, scallops and it was all excellent! The onion soup is good. I love the ginger dressing on the salad. The fried rice is totally worth the "extra price". John was a very skilled and talented chef. He has great knife skills and not only cooked our food to perfection, he put on an amazing show. If you are wondering wether or not to go to Sumo; go ahead and try it. Look past the building and look forward to a great show and outstanding Hibachi grilled food!!

We have been many times to the Japanese teppenyaki style restaurants and this was very good in relation to others. Not the best ever and still way above the worst. Mixed drinks were good, Fried rice was very good, the Emperors feast was very good, and veggies were good. The order they cook in was a little different, usually veggies come out first. When you go to a place like this where you sit 8-10 at a table/grille, get the conversation started with the other guests early so everyone has a good time.

This was, hands down, the worst sushi and possible the worst restaurant I have ever been to. First, the spicy tuna tasted like it came right out of a can...and not Starkist tuna. Tasted bad and was mushy. Then the "spider roll" was also "mushy" and did not taste fresh. The fried rice was extremely oily and took forever to be delivered. Had to ask for chop sticks, then a napkin. The napkin had food all over it. Fortunately I did not get ill, which I was seriously concerned about, because I violated my own rule...not to eat sushi where it was not obviously fresh and where the restaurant wasn't extremely clean. If they employed Japanese chefs, the above would not have been tolerated. Never to return....

We just celebrated my daughter’s 14th bday with a family dinner for ten. Tommy Ng was our chef and he was amazing!!!! He was soooo funny, involved everyone at the table, and was hands down the best hibachi chef we’ve ever had. Ask for Tommy! Food was fantastic and we will definitely return. Thank you Tommy!

My wife and i had dinner here in November 2017, You sit at a large round table with the grill in the middle. The chef comes and prepares your order in front of you on the grill. They make a big show of it and are very entertaining. Telling jokes and throwing food in the air so you can catch it with your mouth. I missed it. The restaurant appears clean and the staff are friendly. Sometimes it takes while before your table is filled up with customers. They wait until the table is filled up to start the cooking and the show. A little expensive but the food is good and the show is very nice with fire shooting up several feet in the air.

Typical steakhouse. The sushi was really good we had the copperhead roll. It was pretty empty for a Friday night around 630. Place was nicely decorated And loved the fact that you don't feel bunched up around the tables. They had typical choices for hibachi- salmon, steak, chicken etc. Some places don't have good "yum yum" sauce but their sauce isn't bad. The cook was really funny. He was that soft spoken funny if that makes sense. I've been to some places where the cook doesn't even talk to you so this was nice for a change. He also did more tricks than I have ever seen a cook do. So that was pretty neat. It's worth a try but like I said a typical Japanese steakhouse. They do give out ice cream and sing for those celebrating a birthday.

the first time ever to have Japanese food. We took our 4 kids and the 2 oldest, my husband and me really enjoyed the food. The smaller 2 really enjoyed the cooking part at our table. We had a couple that had been there before explain a few things so they even made the night better. Only thing is if you want a quite evening this would not be it but it was a good first time experience.

Our first girl trip to San Antonio and we had an amazing time in here! Our chef RACHEL, was AMAZING. She was LITERALLY the highlight of our day. And we are so looking forward to coming back and reserving with HER. Sincerely the 4 young ladies and the two babies from Sunday night. Thank you for a wonderful time Rachel! The food and service was impeccable! Our waiter was super friendly and fast too!

The problem with having the cook as the center of attention detracts from interaction with members of your dinner party. I'd rather have a quiet table where people can enjoy being together. This experience though much enjoyed by many of this dinner party (birthday), I found we had to wait after we were seated and then we had a cook that lacked experience,. The salmon was not fresh and though the kitchen sent out three pieces 1 reg and two small, he had us choose one each so one guest got a regular size piece and the other got a small piece as the third piece went back to the kitchen. The salmon then was not cooked through and he was off to his next service. The owner did come around greeting people and thanking us for coming. They gathered about and did sing happy birthday to the two that were celebrating birthdays.

This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in awhile. Unfortunately, we had taken some friends there for a meal and I was frankly embarrassed. The restaurant is under new management, but they have some work to do in order to bring things up to an acceptable standard. The teppanyaki chef was inexperienced and clearly not comfortable with the "showman" part of his role, the seats were uncomfortable, the place was dark and dingy, and the prices were high. The food itself wasn't all that bad, but this isn't a place I intend to return to anytime soon. There are MUCH BETTER places to eat in San Antonio than this. Places with better food, better value, and a better environment.

Had an amazing time at this restaurant. Food was Fabulous. Little one tried foods she said she did not like and loved them. Our chef was so much fun. All the beautiful prom dresses flowing about was a treat. Man making balloon treats was an unexpected experience. I recommend this as a family friendly restaurant.

The food is amazing and I love going there. The service is good and the chefs are almost always entertaining. Each chef has a little something different that they do, based on their personalities. The portions are big, but it is a bit expensive. We find it worth it for the price, but we couldn't afford to go there super frequently. For tables with children, ask for a warning before the 'big flame'. The place is a bit dingy- I wouldn't call it dirty, but its not exactly bright and cheery in there. It is a nice

This restaurant is high priced and disorganized. Much miscommunication between the waitstaff and cooks. I ordered an appetizer and I'm 100% sure the waiter placed the order but I'm not so sure the cook received it right away. However when this mistake was corrected I was informed by the waiter that the order was made but is now MIA the food was fine and the chef was entertaining. To expensive if you ask me. A bottle of Fuji apple sake retails about 8-10 bucks while here they charge $23!!! Justify that b.s! My waiter was polite and I can tell he was trying real hard to please me. I don't blame the staff. Management needs to be on their game and making sure that the left hand knows what the right hand is doing.

We were tired and not very hungry but had wine and appetizers. Very good. Would like to try the regular grill table dinner some time soon.

Went to eat for my sisters graduation the waitress was very good there was no sushi chef there when we went the whole reason we went sushi! Manager went ahead and made it decent attempt the whole meal was over priced a share a plate with my wife and two rolls $115 after the already added 18% gratuity the hibachi was sub par and apparently you have to pay extra for fried rice

The cook was excellently put on a great show. Keep us laughing the entire time totally worth it. The food was not that great everything tasted like lemon, the waitress mess up our order than that it was fun.

Amazing!! We ALWAYS look forward to Sumo! The bartender is great, awesome drinks and food, and no matter which chef you get everything is always on point!!

Chef Tommy and all the staff were great! From the time we entered they took good care of us, we never had to ask for refills o flag down the staff. Chef Tommy kept us rolling with laughter and his knife skills were on point. My five year old, the star of the show as the birthday girl, was smiling the whole time (other than being surprised by the opening fire show). She had a ball. We loved the steak as Tommy cooked it, plus the veggies and fried rice. The groups around us seemed to be having a lot of fun, too! Great job!

I don't know which was better, the food or the service. Everything was so good. When we arrived, all the tables were occupied so we waited for a short time at the sushi bar. We had a sample of barbecue chicken roll, and it was the best piece of sushi I've ever had. Once we got to our table we started off with soup and salad, and while I didn't like the dressing on the salad too much the soup was so good. Similar to wonton. Once of cook arrived to the grill, he put on a great show and made some of the best food I've ever had. It's such a great atmosphere with great people that work there and it's very fun, highly highly highly recommended!!

Of all the Tepanyaki restaurants I’ve been to. Andrew was the best! He was exceptionally talented and funny as well.

Amazing as always and our chef Aaron is the best we have ever had!!!! We go at least 3 times a month and always request Aaron. He never disappoints and his food is incredibly delicious!!!

We went there for my 70th birthday with all of the kids, grand-kids and great grand-kids. We had two tables right next to each other. Our server was perfect. Always on top of drink refills, obtaining items needed, like forks, knives, napkins, etc. Our chefs were awesome, funny and very talented and entertaining. Highly recommend Sumo and will go again. The cost is very well worth it.

I am surprised to see a few negative reviews on here! I had a really great experience. Best hibachi in the San Antonio area as far as I’m concerned. From sushi to chicken to steak, everything on the menu is great! David Sumo, the manager, and the staff were very friendly.

—Amazing food, atmosphere, and chef! I will definitely be going back. Great waitresses as well. The chef was a great showman and the food was great. I advise buying one plate and splitting it, there's a lot!

With a work collegue we always like to find teppanyaki restaurant in the cities we travel to. So we tried this one. The menu is relatively limited, but the regular options are there. We started with a decent soup... then a salad drowned in dressing with a “weird” taste. The chef arrives at the table... Starts with the fried rice... shall I said the butter rice; there is so much butter in the rice it actually drips when he serves it! Then the “shrimps”... those are not tiger shrimps as we usually see in decent Teppanyaki; they are plain regular shrimps...small ones! We only get 1 and a half... I had chosen Tuna... and again, it gets drowned in butter!! The same fates happen to all the food... butter... butter and butter... Over all mediocre food quality, mediocre entertainment...no bang for your box at all.

Customer service was wonderful...Mathew and Ashley had a wonderful attitude...only downside was we did request 2 of the steaks be rare...blue...and they were more medium well... steaks were still tasty.. Just overdone....will definitely come back...

Other Teppanaki restaurants in San Antonio deliver a better dining experience. Our chef was pleasant enough but not very charismatic. Also, not Asian. Food was OK but not memorable. Decor was not inviting - very dark. Did not feel clean to me. Will not be returning.

I was in town for a meeting. I called a friend to have dinner with and I mentioned going to a Japanese steakhouse. We chose Sumo and called in to to reserve a spot just in case. The prices are pretty high end. I paid a total of $130 including tip. The experience was good and my company was great. The food quality did not match the price. The food is good, but it just doesn't match the price. The rice is amazing (not $130 amazing). My steak was well done instead of medium well and I'm not sure if he even gave me the lobster tail I ordered. He mixed all the lobster up and served everyone the same. I had to pay more and I didn't appreciate that. I didn't want to mess up the vibes of my dinner date so I sucked it up. I had a great time conversing with her and that made me overlook the difference in quality and price charged. The experience is good if you've never gone before. Each meal on the hibachi grill area is $40-$50 each. The portions are not that big, but you'll fill up on rice.

Japanese steakhouses are fun and usually the food is good to edible. We all know it is not really Japanese food, but it can be fun and at some restaurants you actually have a good meal. My husband and I ate at the Sumo Japanese Steak House on I-10 at Medical Drive about 18 month ago and we had a very enjoyable experience. We decided to return last night on 29 January 2017. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. The food was almost inedible irrespective of the price and this restaurant is very expensive for the quality of food and drink. We were seated very quickly as the restaurant was only half full. We noted immediately that the grill looked as though it had not been cleaned in a while. Clumps of burned grease sporadically covered the top of the grill and the corners were filled this thick muck. We are very sorry we did not leave right away. Why did we stay? Probably because we were at a table with a family who had three very nice children with them and we did not want to make a scene. We took our chances hoping the chef would clean the grill before starting. The waitress brought our drinks very quickly. My husband ordered iced tea. It was mostly water and very little tea. I had a glass of chardonnay that was over priced for the quality. The selection was very limited, so I ordered a glass of Kendal Jackson (KJ) Chardonnay; a very acceptable wine. I am not even sure it was actually KJ, because it was weak and very tart. That has not been my experience with KJ chardonnay. The waitress, who was very nice, then served us a bowl of tasteless mushroom water with small bits of chives. The lettuce in the salad was extremely wilted and tasted old. The chef finally showed up with a dirty cart filled with sticky plastic bottles of various liquids and a bowl of butter with (yes you guessed it) pieces of old burned grease in the butter. She did wipe the surface of the grill, but the rag was already coated with black grease. Anyway, the chef was very funny and asked if anyone had any food allergies. I thought this was a very good start. The chef began with cooking the fried rice. The rice was in large clumps and by the end of the frying process there were still hard clumps of rice mixed with the fried rice. My husband ordered chicken with his fried rice and the only one at the table to do so. The chef mixed the chicken with the very large amount of the rice she was cooking for the eight people at the table and my husband received only a small portion of this chicken. Since the chef mixed the chicken with so much rice, she distributed the extra to the others at the table. Unfortunately, that part of the rice had most of the chicken for which we paid extra. The fried rice was very greasy and overcooked to the point it tasted like burnt toast with bits of burnt onion. Next came the shrimp; overcooked and tasteless. It was like chewing rubber chicken. In fact, it had the same texture and taste as the chicken in the chicken fried rice. The filet is up next. The chef actually managed to cook the filet medium rare, just the way I like it. It was very tender and the texture was perfect. However, the meat tasted old burnt grease. The vegetables came last and they were dreadfully overcooked. We also ordered a portion of fried rice from the kitchen to take home for another member of the family who could not join us for dinner. That fried rice looked, smelled and tasted exactly as though it was cooked on the grill at our table. I surmised that the kitchen grills are not kept very clean either. The health inspectors might have a field day in the place. Oh, yes, I almost forgot. I am walking with crutches after breaking an ankle a couple of months ago. The floor was so greasy, that each time I placed a crutch on the floor it almost slipped out from under me. I had to move very slowly and deliberately so as not to fall. I did not need any more broken bones. We will never dine in this restaurant again.

They were very friendly and very attentive with everything. Great experience and very entertaining! I would definitely go back again!

The service was great, the staff very friendly. The chef was very polite and attentive, ensuring everyone's order was not just correct, but delicious and most enjoyable. Highly recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to dine here for a special occasion, should do so.

this place stinks and it is a shame because the food was pretty decent over priced ive eaten at a japanese steakhouse before and payed 120 bucks for two people without tip and i tipped 22 percent and walked out satisfied and happy this place i payed 230 bucks for family of five the only brightspot in this expierience was our cook he was funny and tried to make it fun for my children and myself and my wife now these thieves charge 7.99 seating fee per person when asked whats that for they say soup and salad i tell them well you only brought my kids soup yet i was charged for 39.95 seating fee people next to us charged as well then 18 percent tip included when i looked at check it said number of people in our party was 17 i dont know if the charge 15% gratuity included for 5-10 and 18% for over 10 but it felt like a scam my wife bought a groupon one for each of us they only let us use one even if you go there with friends if your at the same table you can only use one groupon this place is terrible i would not reccomend due to customer service, spoke to mgr what a jerk didnt give a crap his employees were scamming people. Mike

Great selection of food, prices we're reasonable and the staff cannot do more to help. I would recommend a visit to the restaurant. We had sushi and teppenyaki.

Had a fantastic dinner here tonight Stayed next door st a hotel and walked over Little or no wait had to eat with other parties at the teppan tables Enjoyed the gyozas and then ordered the senior steak teriyaki and husband had the chicken teriyaki Their clear soup was delicious and the fried rice marvelous Half the fun in this restaurants are the entertaining chefs and the shows they put on It was more than we usually pay for dinner but the entire experience was worth it

Abraham and Andrew were AMAZING!!! It was half of our families first time there and they made our experience very fun and exciting. We will definitely be going back for my son's b-day

We have eaten many times here, at Benihana before they closed it and the Metzgers opened it with the Sumo's name. Benihana is the gold standard for these tepanyaki places. Sumo's has allowed their chefs to deviate from their long-standing, tried and successful recipes. They are now adding far too much pepper, almost to rival a typical Mexican place. They can and should weed out the chefs who take that approach, because it dilutes what is supposed to be authentic tepanyaki Japanese Steakhouse cuisine. We won't be going back.

I was surprised to find out this restaurant was so dirty. Our table was filthy when we were seated. The chefs had open cans of energy drinks on their carts which is a health code violation. The chef kept dropping food while he was cooking, scooped it up anyway and placed it on customer's plates. It was gross.

The only reason to dine here MIGHT be for the entertainment. Food and drinks are overpriced. I posted a review on YELP that was removed almost immediately, presumeably at the owner's request.

I was very disappointed with this visit to Sumo. We sat down, and things seemed to be going smooth.. a bit longer wait then I am accustomed to here to get going... (but for decent reasons... we sat at a grill and right before we started to order, another couple was seated that had never visited so introduction to the menu and such was warranted) Moving on, drinks and food were ordered and a Saki order was lost. (I ordered our first drink, and upon almost finishing it, asked for another of the warm variety to which the waiter confirmed) 10-15 minutes past and he comes back around and asks "Did you guys want to order another one?" The Chef was friendly, but served the Seared Tuna un-sliced (which has never happened at a Japanese restaurant... not a big deal, but its doesn't slice well.. even with the steak knives that were eventually provided) and the Shrimp Appetizer came rushed and at the end of the meal instead of early on. (unfortunately, multiple attempts to get a shrimp in a bowl failed which resulted in 4-5 pieces on the ground instead of on plates..) The complaints are a little soft in my opinion, but considering the amount of money it requires to feed a family of 6 at this place... I expect[ed] much better service.

I had the steak and shrimp prepared at the table. The chef was quit the entertainment! The food was delicious and the sauces were amazing. I wish I could remember what he called them. I shared an incredible drink that was on fire! Everything was so good. Prices were moderate. We spent about $100 for 2 of us including the alcohol! Not a bad deal. Fun for Adults!

It was great we had such a good time alot of laughter ❤ food was great and kids loved it the show was great and funny it was awesome

The food is good but the prices have gotten outrageous. $200 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children under 5). And this is with my husband and I sharing a plate. The prices jumped significantly. This was our last visit we’ll have here.

This restaurant has fairly tasty food while at the same time offering fascinating entertainment. There are a lot of flames and heat so be ready. Our chef kept us engaged and awed as he prepared our meal and the meals of two other couples at our table. It was definitely a break from the usual quiet meal out.

The restaurant was very much the same as it has been for years, hasn't been revamped in awhile. The cook was amusing, trying to be fun, but dry-humored. The older folks there were not impressed. I had fuun with the cook, though. The food was good, they prepared quite a bit, as they should since each of us paid around fifty dollars a plate for the experience. Good time, but perhaps not fifty dollars worth of gastronomic pleasure?

Quite entertaining and delicious food! Make sure to call for a reservation, that will help you get a hibachi table seating.
Don't Waste Your Time or Money
We had reservations, but were forced to wait an hour to be seated. The cook was new and wasn't entertaining at all. We ended up watching the cooks at the other tables. The food was ok, but not great. They use too much lemon and the shrimp was dry. The worst was when we tried to present our Groupon. They wouldn't accept it!!! The manager came out and said that he won't make any money and wouldn't take it. He said he'd buy us a beer, but wouldn't accept the Groupon. Both the manager and his little assistant need to be in another business. They definitely don't belong in the food industry. They were rude, argued with us, yelled AT us and refused our Groupon. Won't ever go there again.
