Great Brunch place

By Joanne M |

This is a fine and elegant place for Sunday Brunch with a varied menu of Japanese/American selections. You can dawdle for hours or eat and run. Either way the staff is very friendly, there are cocktails and everything is conscientiously prepared. I had some sautéed walnuts that were out of this world.

Restaurant I keep returning to

By kathleen554 |

I have been going to Sunda for years, whenever I travel to Chicago. It has always been one of my favorites. I haven't been there for at least 4 years and returned this week. After reading many reviews about how bad the service got I was somewhat skeptical, however the service was excellent. One of my favorites is the brussel sprout salad, I was a little disappointed on this trip, still good but not great. Everything else was still very good, love that you can share small plates.

Great Restaurant

By tmc-Arizona |

My wife and I dined at Sunda. The atmosphere is great - very energetic and vibrant. The dining area is fairly loud which was my only dislike. The flavors are amazing which justify the slightly higher than normal prices. I started with the Crispy Brussel Sprout salad which had amazing flavors - sweet, just enough spice/heat and great texture - Amazing. Then on to Drunken Noodles. Starting with beef that was very tender and cooked just right, combined with shrimp, a great blend of vegetables and noodles that were thick ribbons of pasta. The flavor was original - you just need to try the dish to understand. The bar was full service with a full the standard drinks combined and excellent bar tenders. Make a reservation, or plan on waiting an hour for a table. Well worth it either way.

Always a Good time

By Clyde M |

We came in while attending training across the street. This is one of my favorite places for sushi. We sat at the chef's table and had some nice items brought out. Everything was great as always. Was very pleased with their bar tender making the old fashioned. Not many places get it right. Desert was a hit as well. All around a great dinner. Service was top notch.

Average Asian fusion and sushi- nothing special

By Have Bag Will Travel |

This is one of those places that's trying to do too much but doesn't excel at anything. They have Chinese food, Thai, sushi, other Japanese, and some fusion stuff, but none of it is that good. Quality is not as good as traditional 'all sushi' restaurants, but they have large tables which are good for groups. Service is good but the food is just average.

Great Asian fusion in a lively environment

By Jeffwithtwoels |

There are so many diverse Asian cuisines, so it's difficult to guess what will happen when you have an Asian fusion restaurant. But Sunda does it very well. You can find a number of items that you might expect in specific cuisines (Chinese dim sum dumplings and pork baos, or beautiful sushi), but more fun are things that riff off of traditional Asian dishes in creative and delicious ways. Everything is served in sizes appropriate for sharing, so it's a good place to go with an adventurous friend and try new things. Everything was served promptly, with just enough explanation to clarify what was happening. It was Saturday night, and the place was jumping. If you're looking for somewhere quiet and intimate, this might not be the place. But if you're up for a little excitement with your meal, Sunda might be just the place to go.

Best Asian fusion in Chicago!

By Patricia E |

My sister and i were on a work trip in Chicago in February, and wanted to spend some time together so decided to look for a sushi place near our hotel. Omg, we were so lucky to find Sunda! to say we loved it is an understatement! The enviroment, the drinks the food! absolutely delicious! i will take my family there this summer! Cant wait!

Outstanding pan-Asian (Filipino-forward) restaurant.

By MichiganTed |

Went there for both Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch and the food was nothing short of phenomenal. My wife misses food from her home, and loves going to Sunda every time we are in Chicago. Fantastic authentic Filipino food (crispy pata and torcino were spot on particulary) and Wagyu beef that almost loses the characteristics of being a solid. If you're in Chicago and even if Filipino food isn't your culinary sweet spot give it a try - you won't regret it. (And they offer way more than just Filipino food of course - but try it while you are there!)

Restaurant Week Menu Visit

By Tried it once |

The 3 portions each were minuscule for $59 per person. What a disappointment, felt like asking for a refund!

Good food not worth prices

By RobG |

The sushi tasted good. But the prices are too high for what you get. Also, the service is below average. To almost ten minutes to get water and have a drink order taken. Better places in area with better prices.

Good Food but sterile

By bfcantwell@gmail.com |

The staff was friendly and pleasant. Restaurant was clean and pleasant but seemed sterile. Food was good, but improvements could be made. Not a lot for vegetarians. Draft beer sucked along with bottled beer. With the craft beer craze lots of restaurants are lacking. Expensive for what we received. Won't be back.

Fantastic

By Ryan R |

Everything about the experience at Sunda exceeded expectation, from the ambiance when we enter to the food entering our mouths. If you have the pleasure to sit in the lounge area, ask for Caden, he’s a fantastic bartender and server who while guide you through a memorable evening. Their signature crispy rice and the garlic shrimp skewers are fantastic. 100% would recommend to friends and family and certainly will be back in future trips.

Loud atmosphere difficult to have a conversation

By Kate Illinois1 |

You will need a reservation or be seated at a counter which is not ideal for 4 people dinning. Started with spicy adamame serving enough for 4 people. The crispy brussell sprout salad was good but not cripsy as the name of the dish. Drangonfly sushi was good. Baked snow crab handroll was good- not good for sharing though. Drunken noodles and Crazy Rice were both good. Nothing was memorable that I need to return.

Go somewhere else

By Jowr1ght |

I’ve been coming to Chicago for years and this has to be one of the most overpriced and disappointing meals I have ever had. Brought my girlfriend here for her dinner on Saturday, the staff was very kind and had us seated quickly. The waiter was very kind and informative. However the food was extremely poor, I could get better sushi in my hometown of 5,000 people. We ordered three appetizers and had 2 drinks, ended up paying $160 for an awful meal. Paid up quickly and left without any confrontation as the staff were too nice and I was not in the mood to put them down over food they didn’t prepare. We went across to Roka Akor ( a much better experience all around), had 5 dishes and 2 drinks for $120. I will never be going back to Sunda.

Wonderful Ramen

By The_Lankan |

As a family, we were visiting our daughter who goes to Loyola in Chicago and I found this place on Trip Advisor so we decided to go for brunch around 2:00pm on a Saturday. We also took another student from De Paul with us. You need to make a reservation at this place or you will be waiting for a while, it does get pretty crowded. Also, we ended up driving to the restaurant and there was no parking next to the restaurant so we had to park in a structure located on the Northeast corner of Clark and Kinzie streets. The parking cost $28.00 for 2 hours. We ordered an Oxtail Pot Stickers appetizer and it was delicious. All five of us were in the mood for noodle soup so we all ordered different versions of Tonkotsu Ramen, I ordered mine with Pork Belly and Mushrooms and it was excellent. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The bill for all 5 of us came to $101.91 not including the tip. The atmosphere and decor in the restaurant is very nice and laid back, we really liked it. If you take smaller kids to this restaurant and order ramen, you can split one between two kids since portions are large. We will definitely go back again. The only thing I didn’t like about this place was the cost of parking, but it is to be expected in Chicago, next time I will take an Uber or public transport.

I loved this restaurant

By Richard P |

I loved their food -- and ate there three nights in a row with a different dish each night. The service is impeccable and the food is fabulous -- excellent Asian main dishes, all reasonably priced with big portions. One night I had pad thai and a lemon grass salad. The pad thai was wonderful, though I found the lemon grass salad to be superfluous and not particularly tasty in any case. The next two nights I had a wonderful penang chicken one evening, and finally a szechuan chicken dish that was equally good I arrived rather early so the restaurant was at first reasonably quiet, but when it fills up later in the evening, the noise level is fairly loud. Hard surfaces on the walls help raise the volume level of reflected conversations. I strongly recommend this restaurant and am regretting that I will soon leave Chicago and thus deprive myself of the pleasure of dining here again and again.

Overrated fusion.

By KChiselko |

On a recommendation from a friend, we went for Sunday brunch at Sunda. Upon looking at the menu and some pictures - it looked like a great fusion option. The restaurant had a nice vibe and decorations and was quite busy. We were seated along a long couch (which by the way was like sitting on a itchy wool rug) and on the other side a chair - so if you're going, definitely avoid the couch. Was excited to order the oxtail fried wontons, the duck steamed buns and the crab and lobster garlic noodles. The oxtail was nice because it was a unique option... the duck was rather tasty... and the noodles were a bit disappointing (very dry and hardly any seafood). Overall, it was average at best and a bit pricey (from USD$18-$25 per dish). The only really good part was the $60 Veuve Clicquot mimosa platter. Overall, we found Sunda to be rather overrated. Put it this way, PF Changs would have been a better option. There are so many phenomenal restaurants in Chicago - we recommend that you try somewhere else if you're a fusion foodie.

Sunda , excellent healthy and very enjoyable

By Thomas M |

The service was efficient and friendly and staff gave us excellent recommendations. The food was perfectly spicy and they have an extensive vegan menu.

Still Delivering A Great Dinner Experience

By alsmith031 |

It's rare to see restaurants deliver great quality experiences for many years these days, but Sunda continues to bring it. Great service to complement a tasty combination of sushi and other fusion dishes. You're tempted to over-order to cover all the bases, but it's worth it! Make sure you save some room for nigiri and a couple unique rolls. They're solid for sure.

100% Fusion

By Peter W |

Very nice dining experience downtown Chicago. Instead of having the obligatory steak we decided to check out “Asian Fusion Kitchen”. Selected several dishes to be shared at the table as it is recommended. The food was excellent, very well prepared and nicely presented. The atmosphere is lively to say the least but not unpleasant at all. If you are looking for a valid alternative to “The Chop” and you like “sharing” don’t look any further than Sunda.

great food, fast service will come back again

By Kerry G |

We arrive unannounced with a party of six. Did not have to wait in line. food was delicious and a good selection. Everyone was happy with their meals.

Best restaurant in Chicago

By Thomas V |

We were blown away at how good this restaurant was even after reading the great reviews. We stopped in after a Cubs game to celebrate our son’s birthday. We tried some local craft beers on draft with excellent cold sake. We tried their bone marrow by far our best dish in Chicago), pork belly boas, wagyu lobster roll, and truffle hamachi sushi. Everything was beautifully displayed and delicious. We’d highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who enjoys unique cuisine and beautiful restaurant experiences. Overall cost may be high but the service and ingredients (overall experience) is well worth that cost. Don’t miss this place when in Chicago.

Amazing Food

By Marnie L |

Between the 4 of us we tried 11 items on the menu. We loved 10/11 and I mean LOVE. Such high quality food and imagination combined. We are still talking about this meal and cant wait to go back. Great service as well!

Amazing dining experience at Sunda - Fulton Market!

By JandK |

Stunning ambience, energetic vibe, creative cocktails (cheers to you, Rowan!), and very friendly service (thank you, Connor!). Most importantly, the food was beyond fantastic! The 4 of us loved loved loved the beautiful sashimi platter assortment, sushi hand rolls, hamachi styled tuna garnished with green peppers, and steamed pork buns for appetizers. Our entrees were unanimous hits, with melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with a yummy coconut sauce, perfectly prepared grilled veggies in a nice lightly spicy sauce, and a couple of stand-out sushi rolls (rainbow roll and tuna & mango roll). Each plate was perfect for sharing so everyone could savor the wide variety in Sunda’s amazing menu! We topped off our dinner with a heavenly bowl of halo-halo. A perfect dining experience from beginning to end! A huge Thank You to the entire cooking staff of Sunda - Fulton Market for their incredible culinary skills. We will be back!

Fantastic dinner

By hbkim62 |

Our dinner at Sunda was one of the best meals of my life. For lack of a better analogy, it was like having pan-Asian tapas. Every dish we had was fantastic. The oxtail dumplings, miso cod, crispy brussels sprouts salad, pear salad, adobo pork belly, garlic crab noodles, duck fried rice. I loved every dish. I wish there were a Sunda in my hometown of Los Angeles. I would be there every week

Amazing! Fresh & creative food & cocktails, and the best, most personable & thoughtful staff!

By Cindy B |

We were a party of 4 (ladies) who were there 8/14 for a birthday dinner. Lee was our waiter and he was so charming and charismatic, he really made my birthday a great one for us all to remember! He made thoughtful recommendations to ensure we were happy from start to finish! Every staff member we encountered was amazing! We had the best restaurant experience we’ve ever had! The food & cocktails were OMG! absolutely amazing, creative & satisfying! Beautiful place!

CHARGED ME FOR DINNER TWICE & WILL NOT REFUND

By BENJAMIN M |

Food is mid but the service once I tried explaining the mistake they had made was awful. Charged me twice for 1 dinner and then said "they could not find it in their system" as I showed them the double charge on my phone. Months later of emailing/calling them to no avail. Management is SCUM! My buddy got his car stolen when he valet parked it here too.

PF Chang style

By ejoellem |

To be fair I was here for a large corporate funded dinner where the food was served family style. I thought the food was the quality of PF Chang’s. I’m fact I thought PF Chang’s was better. The only thing I enjoyed was the salmon. I think this place has an amazing vibe but other than that it was not delicious- things were over or under flavored. I am surprised it has so many stars. Perhaps having a dish prepared solely for myself off of the menu would give me a different experience.

Wonderful!

By Trish L |

My fave in all of chicago. Broad selection all delicious. Order Brussels sprout salad for sure. Maybe two. Noisy but worth the trip for the food

Discover Great New Flavors and Foods

By WellTraveledChicago |

Top recognition goes to our waiter at Sunda who artfully guided us through a vast menu offering a huge range of selections. Appetizers including pork belly skewers were delicious (though the pork belly was not for those carefully watching their fat intake). The pork confit entree was perfectly prepared. But the desserts were especially interesting. Sorbet made from the “Obe,” a yam-like vegetable, was delightful, not too sweet, and served with divine fresh strawberries and blackberries. Located on narrow Illinois Street (one way East) behind the Merchandise Mart, consider valet parking or public transportation. That neighborhood is really dense.

Over price with salty food

By Q37879 |

This restaurant looks nice. If you want to go there to hang out for the restaurant atmosphere, it's pretty nice. Food, however, was horrible. Everything we ordered was very salty and over priced.

Family gathering

By Tom C |

Thoroughly enjoyed our Asian fusion dishes. Brussels sprout salad was yummy. Thanks for the recommendation from the ladies we met from California at Cindy's Rooftop.

Phenomenal!

By GerryBaron06 |

My brother recommended this place because he said he enjoyed their food. Now I see why. We had the Signature Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Red Dragon Sushi, Demon Tuna, and Panang Chicken. Two of us had cocktails - Kiwot’s Gift and Lychee Luxury Drop. Both drinks were excellent. Nicely blended. For dessert we had the “Ridiculous” - vanilla ice cream covered in ginger carrot cake and smothered in caramel with sprinkled glazed walnuts. Everyone marveled at how good the food tasted. Our server Ilmoon was exceptional. Super friendly and gave good recommendations.

Great Asian fare

By janhad |

Excellent food and service. The duck dim sum was fantastic. The softest, fluffiest buns I've ever had. The oysters were very good. As was the stuffed avocado, the garlic crab noodles, and the pork belly. My husband loved the sweet potato sushi. Joey, our waiter, was fantastic and very knowledgeable. The service was above average as different wait staff brought out our dishes as they became available. The chocolate lava cake was also very good. Highly recommend this unique Asian fusion restaurant.

Corporate Events

By Jennifer M |

We have used Sunda multiple times for business events, casual dinners and larger cocktail hours. Nicole and the team make planning seamless and of course the food is always consistently delicious!

Hugely disappointing over prepared food

By 27seconds |

Visiting from London. Busy, loud and bustling restaurant full of Chicago’s bright young things. Waiters helpful and a good cocktail list. I am a huge fan of this Asian fusion food....top of the list Hakkasan in Mayfair in London (sorry Hanway Place!), but the Chefs at Sunda are trying too hard, over dressing and complicating simple and classic food. The prawn tempura was drenched in what could have been Thousand Island salad dressing, the dumplings could hardly be found under layers of goodness knows what. With 60 seconds less preparation these dishes could have been so much better. We waited 20 minutes for the last dish of sushi...the waiter rather embarrassed...and eventually he recommend we cancel it so we did and got the bill. Roka is across the street and if the standard worldwide menu there it is tough competition to Sunda and easily wins.

A1 food and service

By Akia |

We had an excellent time at Sunda. We went on a Sunday night, and it was packed. I knew right then we had made a good choice. Our waiter was on point, and the food, omg the food. The oxtail pot stickers were and Seoul wings were so delicious. We got those are appetizers. The miso cod was so scrumptious, and the crazy rice was just tasty. The drinks were awesome. Then too add to it all, was this oh so mouthwatering molten lava cake, with a green tea whip cream. Everything was just so flavorful. We loved it

Dinner with 2 meat eaters, 1 veggie and 1 vegan

By JoL |

Fabulous meal, absolutely delicious for each and every one of us. Staff were great, service perfect. The vegan food was utterly amazing. Perfect for each one of us!

So many menu options!

By Kate Quinn |

Lovely flavours at Sunda. I'm still thinking about those delicious garlic crab noodles. Equally yummy were the Spicy Tail of Two Tunas and the Crunchy Pig, Hidden Lobster. Next time we might be brave enough for the Gambler!

Good eats

By Victor K |

Good eats here. Had the oxtail which was amazing. Followed that up with chicken pad Thai. Was ok more sweet than heat. Perhaps should have stepped farther out if the comfort zone.

Overrated

By Ketchkelly |

I was so beyond disappointed in my family’s experience at Sunda. I have read so many fabulous reviews of this restaurant- and after eating there - I seriously wonder what all the hype is about. Food comes out in a no particular order - so some people at ur table are eating while others are just waiting - the Bloody Mary bar is poorly stocked - and the meal I ordered - chicken scrambled was yucky- so I sent it back after one bite - and was still charged for the meal. Never going back!

Super good food and service!

By Karlotta Gudjonsdottir |

Had the best cauliflower ever tasted at Sunda restaurant. I went there with a friend of mine and she is vegan, so I decided to join her for a vegan dish! I still dream about this chilli/sweet cauliflower. We also ordered sushi and some appetizers. All really good, but the cauliflower was outstanding;) one of the servers took my beer when I had one just a tiny bit left (that I intended to drink) and the server was back with a new one within the minute. Very good food, quality food and great service.

Resturan must visit if you are around

By Hesham H |

One of the bes. Asian fusion Resturant you can find ! Real Asian test with wonderful innovative style! I would love to see that every where . Food is much more delicious than any others we visited

Would go back to Chicago just for places like this

By yesimallpacked |

Recommended by our hotel concierge. Full disclosure... We are sushi amateurs. What a great menu to experiment with. Lovely setting. Wonderful vibe. Very large restaurant; spotless; fresh; engaged staff from beginning to end. We loved some dishes, but not so much another ...however this was all on us, Being naïve to this type of cuisine. The server was patient with us. The only improvement I would offer management..... 1. The server did not come back for a long time to see how things were. 2. We ordered 3 dishes (for 2 of us), server said they would be well paced, however, what seemed to be secondary servers or “runners” dropped off the plates all at once and left.

Excellent Asian fusion/sushi

By TripPhotographer52 |

I do not give many excellent reviews but this place was great. and it was big..and very busy. I went here with my daughter and son-in-law and I had a glass of wine and my son-in-law got a beer. We started with a shitake edamame dumplings which was OK to me but the others loved it. We all loved the brussel sprout, etc salad. The waitress was great- she also brought us the vegetarian menu and we ordered SW caterpillar and some new form of sushi on a crispy rice rectangle with cooke for veggie ingredients. We also had the miso black cod which was delicious. We also had the tofu pad thai which was very tasty. also, great atmosphere.

Birthday Dinner

By NORMZZ - Globe Traveler |

My husband surprised me with a dinner for my birthday at this place and I got really superexcited coming here. The lobby was nice and we got seated right away (My husband made a reservation in advance). The place was packed when we came (it was a Sunday) hence, it was so noisy. We started with crispy chicken (fried skin that is flavored with garlic) and it was good -- reminds me of the street food in the Philippines. We ordered mixed lobster with other seafood toppings on rice and it was just ok (sashimi style on top of browned rice). We also ordered a bao with duck (siopao with duck) -- it was tasty and enjoyable to eat. I decided to suggest the pancit canton too but it was disappointing. As an Asian, I know very well how this noodle should have been prepared and I think it was not well cooked. The sauce was also salty so I had to instruct my husband to just pour some water to neutralize the taste-- it improved and we were able to eat it. We did not order a dessert as we have planned a different place for that. Service in general was just ok -- still a pleasant waitress, in spite of the accidental vodka spilling incident on my husband. I still had a great time because I was with my hubby and well, I ended up having a special cupcake treat for my birthday(my husband informed the management about it). Overall, I think the place is just good, above average. I would have to go another time again to check the rest of the menu to be fair but I would bring my friends in another Asian fusion place instead of this one.

River North Asian fusion

Excellent Asian fusion meal! Server was friendly and helpful. Lively ambience with interesting decor. They have a vegetarian/gluten free menu which was appreciated. Drinks were good as well. Don't miss dessert.

Terrible experience

By Maribeth D |

I am visiting Chicago and have heard about Sunda in California. We came for the all you can eat Filipino feast but they only serve it first Thursday of the month. We were disappointed but we wanted to try the restaurant anyway. We made reservation but they said no reservation needed for happy hour what they neglected to tell us was that they moved the Happy hours to 5-7. We Uber to get there by 4pm and waited for an hour. There was a one page happy hour menu which does not offer what we want so we still have to order from their regular menu. First appetizers was lumpia. It was over cooked and the meat was stale. I ordered salmon skin hand roll which came with fresh salmon. When I tried to tell our waitress it is not what i ordered she came back with the driest pack fried salmon hand roll I have ever tasted. Yellow tail sashimi was good quality fish meat except it was floating in special sauce. We thought they cannot mess up panang but there was no rice offered, so we ordered brown rice and it wasn’t fully cooked. When we asked her to cook it more she gave us excuses on how it is cooked in a cooker and they have no control over it. We have paid top dollars for our meals and expect nothing less but that’s what they offered less of everything. They needed to train their waitress to be more polite and try to make customer’s experience more satisfying. Courtesy should be their best policy

Unique and Very Creative Asian Fusion Menu

By Dave T |

Look forward to eating here whenever we're in Chicago. This is one of the most creative and comprehensive Asian Fusion menus you will find anywhere. Most importantly, they seem to do everything very well. Over the years, we ( and guests) have tried most everything on the menu.......haven't run into anything we would not heartily recommend. As an appetizer, try the crispy brussel sprouts (I know.....to most, including me, this sounds about as unappetizing as possible). It is delicious. The wait staff is very good. Ask for Boxton.

Food was amazing but there's no waiting place for take away

By Pris L |

I had one of those weird moments when you're suddenly craving sushi and this was the only restaurant in the area serving Asian food. Yelp said food take away was available so I walked over and ordered some sushi rolls to go. It was a bit awkward though because takeaways were ordered at the bar and it was a busy night so there was no place to stand or sit while I waited for my order. Took at least 5 minutes before a bar staff could stop to get my order. I then kind of stood awkwardly around looking for a spot to stand where I wasn't in someone's way (which was hard to find given the tight space and rush of people). The food then took around 20 minutes before it was ready. The containers are very sturdy and nice containers though - worth keeping and reusing.

Good food - Loud Atmosphere

By cramer38 |

I was excited to make reservations at Sunda since I had heard such good things about the food there. However, when I walked into the place I was so disappointed at how terribly noisy it was in there. You couldn't even carry on a conversation without straining. The food and wait service was good and decor was nice, but the roar totally ruined our experience.

Terrible would not recommended

By Tracey Rohan irwin |

The sushi was not great at all - the edamame had table salt on it - the server acknowledging that MSG IS USED IN the sauce - really disappointing

Fantastic Fusion

By iTraveltheworld195 |

This was our first time dining here but we will be back. I decided to dine here a few days before and so was only able to book a high top table. Next time I will try to book earlier and get a standard table. The food was excellent and they had enough options for our vegan with a dairy allergy dining companion. The dishes are meant for sharing and we had one eater with a large appetite so we tried a lot of dishes! I think we tried all the bao buns. They are all amazing and quite filling. They modified the crispy brussels sprouts to accommodate our vegan and it was so good. The crispy texture was delightful. We had two orders of "tail of two tunas" because it was so good. The Chap Chae was one of my favorites. This is a noodle dish that is vegan. Finally we tried both of the crispy rice signature dishes. Also good but really there isn't a bad dish here. The cocktails were stupendous! I had two Mai Tais. So happy!

Visit and dine more than once.

Remarkable food and service. Sasha was attentive, knowledgeable and had just the right touch. The restaurant is handsome and lively. Thanks to Ed for a delicious appetizer. Will return again tomorrow night to sample the sushi. Try the miso cod. First rate; unforgettable.

Delicious Miso Cod is a Must Have

By SeasonedFoodie |

The atmosphere was festive and the service And drinks were good. We had the oxtail pot stickers, duck fried rice (was light on duck), and beef lollipops (which were a little dry and chewy). The egg rolls were good. The eel was delicious. The Miso cod was the winner! It was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious!

Perfect Japanese!

By labrina2015 |

All we tried was good quality japanese food with a nice modern twist. Lively place and great service!

Good Experience!

By WillIGoBack |

Friends suggested this restaurant and it did not disappoint. Food was very good and the restaurant is large with good decor Standouts were the Seoul Wings, Shrimp Tempura and the pork fried rice. Will I Go Back. Need to try the sushi. Service was a little aloof so reason for one less star but will go back

Lively restaurant delicious food

By coloradononna |

Searching for Asian fusion in this beef focused city we discovered Sunda - miso cod outstanding - as was duck rice and Brussels sprout salad - very gracious and helpful server Liza guided us to our delicious dishes - would hope to return on our next visit to Chicago - only draw back for us senior citizens - very loud ambient noise - but everybody seemed to be happy - and we were certainly well fed

Gem in Chicago

By nikonos3 |

Restaurants come and go. But this place has been around since 2009. I have visited Chicago many times but for some reason this place has never been on my radar. The name of this restaurant is a little deceiving since the word is not a familiar Philippine term. In any case, The cuisine that they serve is not necessarily a fusion type of meal, but I think it is more like an improvement of already tasty Philippine culinary offerings. All the choices were shareable sizes so you can order several things for everyone to try. Prices were reasonable. Service was great. Definitely bringing the crew here on our next visit to the windy city

Somebody Woke Up Grumpy

By World T |

honestly the food was really good if a bit overpriced but the service was so bad it left a bad taste in our mouths. the waiter (large guy with a mask) was in a foul mood from the start and made us feel like we were bothering him by ordering our food, asking for the wifi password, or really just being in his space. when the manager realized there was some unhappiness at the table he talked with us but didn't address the situation at all. Our group was 13 people (business group), spent over $1000, gladly gave automatic 20% tip, and were trying to relax and have a nice meal but somebody woke up grumpy...

To die for!!!

By Globalfoodietraveler |

We visit Chicago 2-3 times a year and have eaten at some amazing places. This was reasonably priced and had the most fabulous food - cauliflower 4.5/5, crispy rice tuna 5/5, edamame shiitake dumpling - 4/5, brussels sprout salad 5/5***, szech chicken 4.5/5, Cocktails La Hato, Billy Sakitini, were well made too. Service was attentive. Dessert banana dumplings and Mochi were super. We will be back many times!!!

Top notch food and service

By #1Cubsfan |

At here at about 11:30am on a Sunday. Not crowded at all. Maybe only 4-5 other tables besides us. Waitstaff was attentive. Our glasses were always full. Food was superb. Tempura French toast was amazing. Pork belly skewers is a must try. Pork adobo fried rice was excellent too. Somewhat pricey, but not surprising since it’s in Chicago. Valet parking available for $15. Street parking, if you can find one, is $4/hour with a 2 hour max. I’d definitely come back again.

A Very Loud Restaurant

By The_Loup_Garou |

A Very Loud Restaurant Did I mention that Sunda is loud? In October, we were in Chicago, as my wife had a major presentation with her senior management team. I was tasked with picking the restaurant for a business dinner, for the team to discuss the presentation, and put the final touches on it. Based on many recommendations, I opted to book Sunda, at 110 W Illinois St. On a cold, and gloomy late October evening, we headed to Sunda in a couple of taxis. We arrived for our early reservation, and were promptly seated by a very pleasant hostess. We were in the rear corner of one dining area, at a 4-top, with small wings, which folded out. For a group of 8, that was crowded. Also, the tables were very, very close together, in that area. This could be a problem. The restaurant is very attractive, and has many seating options, from small 2-tops, to long, wooden tables, to seating at the sushi bar, and then some at a small bar, near the front of the restaurant. The interior walls feature a lot of exposed brick, and some large windows. The lighting, while a bit dim, is attractive. The artwork is also attractive, and especially some of the abstract metal sculptures. I was seated at the back of this table, facing out to one of the sushi bars, and much of the main dining room. I had the wine list in hand, and made my selections. While short, the wine list is very serviceable, and I liked some of the “reserve” wines, but as this was a business meeting, I kept away from those pages. Our server came to take the wine order, but could not hear me, across the rather small table. I can usually project my voice, well into the balcony, but the noise level was so high, that I had to point to the wines, so that then my wife could point to them again, as the server could not squeeze between the other tables, to get to my side. It was very early, and I would guess that the bar area, and dining area that I could see, were only about 25%, but the noise was deafening already - and it only got worse. The wine came, and folk began placing orders. Unfortunately, our server could only hear the two folk, closest to the dining room. The rest had to point, or have a co-worker place the order. I let my wife order, and just sat back. Unfortunately, it was impossible to talk about the upcoming presentation, without screaming, so a business dinner, devolved into just dinner. There was zero conversation at our table. Now, Sunda is a “New Asian” restaurant, and does a very good job at bringing the Pan-Asian theme to life. There are hints of Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai and Chinese. The dishes that I had, worked well. Some were served family style, and passed around, though this became a bit awkward with the limited table real estate. Also, service could only be accomplished between two of the diners, so they had to lean away, as the food was placed onto the table, to be spread out by my party - very off-putting. As I could not see what items the folk at the table had pointed to, I have no idea what was ordered, however, most was very good, though I would grade the sushi dishes down a bit - not the best I have had, and even in Chicago. The rest, however, was much, much better. Our server, and her team tried to do their best, but the cramped table, and the spacing of that table to others, made her job virtually impossible. My hat is off to her, for her efforts. I took full responsibility for a botched business dinner, and treated the group to drinks and wine, back in the quiet of our hotel’s bar - where folk could converse in normal tones, and all be easily heard. Much of the food might bring me back to Sunda, as we are in Chicago once per month, but with the noise, I am just not sure. Maybe my wife and I could sit at the sushi bar, and just smile at each other. Many would likely enjoy the noise, and assume that it means that Sunda is a happening place. I’d rather have conversation, to accompany my meal.

Amazing twist on Asian food

By Robert L |

If your in the mood for Asian food this place is a must. Either for dinning in or carry out. The Brussel sprout salad and crispy spicy tuna amazing and go well with a sake. Would recommend this restaurant for any occasion.

A lovely experience

By Kaori B |

Markin was a great waiter, he made sure we were comfortable and well attended to. We barely had to wait for our food, water was filled quite often. Food was great and yummy, free desserts for birthdays.

Good food and busy...

By Patrick C |

Went here with a large group of about 9 people. They have lots of communal tables and a really open area. It can get loud but thats part of the package. The food comes out when ready and makes for a fun dining experience. They have separate Vegan and Gluten Free Menus as well. Some standouts were the Brussel Sprouts Salad, Pickled Veg, Edamame Steamed Dumplings—those were all Vegan. There are plenty of options for almost anyone who dines here.

Excellent Asian

By ecoyenya |

We decided to have brunch and chose Sunda. The menu was extensive and was fusion Asia. Although brunch was available, we had sushi/sashimi. It was fresh and the had the harder to find otoro and uni that we like. The waiter was very knowledgeable , gladly helped with dietary problems, and expedited our order due to time constraints. We were pleased with our reasonably priced meal.

Dinner

The best Pho l have ever had. The waiter was polite, but seemed to want to hurry our visit and the place wasn't even packed.

Beautiful high end, fairly high-priced, too noisy for intmacy

By AHW676 |

The restaurant and food is beautiful, no question. It's a nice spot for a special date night or occasion. The dishes are artfully presented and very tasty, but it's probably not the kind of food that I would choose to eat over and over again. And it's not particularly intimate as the restaurant is very, very loud. We went on a Thursday evening, and the restaurant was packed (it was the last night of a large convention, or else they are just that busy every night). The walls are brick and the floors are hard, which might have had something to do with the overall loud clamor. In fact, it made it hard for us to decide what sort of ambience the restaurant is after. With the ultra dim lighting, it's even a little hard to see how pretty the food is, which would suggest romance and intimacy, but the background noise is so loud that it's not intimate at all (no whispering words of love if you want to be heard). If I wanted to pick a spot to impress, I would go here again, but not for intimacy.

Fabulous in every way

By bookninja |

Three of us arrived at Sunda to a very welcoming hostess (book ahead is recommended) The ambiance is lovely & there are private rooms- they book parties as well). Dan was our waiter & I do not believe I have ever had such personal and informative service in Chicago ever. He was very helpful in the decision process and guided us through the enticing menu. He also assured us that if we didn't find our choices to be enough, we could order more later. They have an incredible bloody Mary bar - they deliver a work of art. But let's concentrate on the food. The restaurant is a combination of Japanese and Chinese with a Philipino influence in some dishes. There are also Thai options. The waitstaff is also attentive to any allergies or food preferences. We had the small spring rolls (Lumpia) with dipping sauces, Tail of Tunas sushi (spicy) and Rainbow sushi (they also offer sashimi) and Adobo Rice (a delectable combination of pork, scallions and rice which was wonderful). Every single bite was bliss. They do NOT use MSG. We had a superb experience and I am anxious to return to try everything else! Sunda is located in River North (a few blocks west of Nordstrom and the Guinn Hotel). With tax and tip, our bill was $121.

Amazing!

By Schmooglet |

A group of 5 of us ate at Sunda on a Friday evening. We had a fabulous meal. The cocktails were a great way to start. The blackberry/rosemary was beautiful and the saki martini was the favorite. Each dish seemed better than the next and we couldn’t decide on a favorite. Although the most talked about dish after the evening was the brussel sprout salad. The recommendation to share was definitely the way to go. Tons of energy and a great memorable evening.

Good restaurant; interesting food choices

By heather j |

Restaurant had a good atmosphere; busy, but not crazy crowded. Server was good. Interesting foods. Crispy rice wagyu beef was very good; pork fried rice also good; shishito peppers good. Stuffed avocado w/ ahi sounded delicious, but was disappointing -- completely flavorless/bland & textureless - skip it and try something else on the menu.

Fabulous Christmas Eve dinner

A bit pricey, but the Food and Service is fantastic. The atmosphere is Lovely and on point to theme. They were very busy when we went early !

GF Asian

Fantastic food experience! Many gluten free options. The food tasted fresh and delicious! Had GF chicken pad thai, roasted vegetables and garden roll. Highly recommend trying. Great service! Very knowledgeable about the menu

GREAT Place to Try!

By Wtf007 |

FIRST time going to this fun restaurant. We arrived at 7:00pm on a Saturday and the place was packed and noisy! Almost deafening. It was impossible to TALK to each other (we were a party of 5) WITHOUT yelling at each other across the table! Menu has LOTS to choose from though, and we tried a variety of different starters, entrees and desserts. Some highlights for us were the Lemongrass Beef Lollipops, Seared Salmon, and the Tiger Shrimp Tempura. Honestly, we liked all the other stuff we ordered too. We would definitely go back at some point...but just NOTE that if are planning a visit here on a Friday or Saturday NIGHT...it will be CROWDED and very LOUD.

Everything here is fab!

By freddiecat7 |

We go to lunch here because dinner is very crowded because it is so popular. The brussel sprouts are incredible & the sushi is way fine!

Great Sushi and Asian Cuisine

By Alan B |

We had a fantastic lunch in this stylish, conveniently located Asian restaurant that offered tremendous variety. Our server was top-notch and we were in and out quickly

Great sushi

By ninkho |

This place was very trendy, but better than that was the great sushi. The drinks were also really good. It was a perfect start to a Saturday night.

Unique food and restaurant only issue is noise level, but an excellent place for something different

By Chuck R |

First, let's get the only issue out of the way and that's the noise level. I am fine with loud, but it was tough to adjust here. Oddly it all was the diners, not music. It must be the acoustics as it's not a bar scene. Just go with expectations of not being able to hold a conversation. The food is very good, with items intended to be shared for tasting. The good part is you can try several different dishes. It does add up to be more than it seems at first look through the menu. That along with the variety makes this a great experience. The baked snow crab hand roll was our highlight dish! The lumpia egg rolls were okay, not our style. The adobo pork belly was more like a tender pork chop, which was a good thing, but didn't have enough flavor to be a wow dish. This was a different sort of restaurant than our normal and we enjoyed it. We'll come back and be prepared for the noise, ready to try new dishes!

Amazing food!

By ewachtler |

Amazing food! Best meal I had while visiting Chicago! Every dish we shared was phenomenal. Highly recommend and will return. Family style dishes with tons of options.

Great menu and service

By jake2771 |

Cocktail menu had a great selection of sake and mixed cocktails. Everyone in our party liked their drink choice. Food was very good and portions spot on. Service to our large party was excellent. I would come here again.

Wonderful!!

By Lal626 |

This restaurant is a must go! We dined here for brunch and it was absolutely delicious!! The mimosa kits are truly unique. The Soma Mary is an entire meal. We loved the lumpia and steak and eggs. It really was all delicious. Go here now!

Unique and Exceptional Asian Fusion

By Globaljoan |

The menu options are so intriguing that we had a hard time choosing. Got the lemongrass meat lollipops, miso cod, and sweet potato sushi roll that had countless interesting ingredients. We LOVED it and swooned looking at the dishes being served next to us as well. Definitely will go back multiple times, which is a statement for a restaurant-rich heaven like Chicago.

Fresh and delicious

By Trinh V |

This was my favorite foodie stop when I was in Chicago! The restaurant is a lot bigger than what it seems from the outside. They have Valet parking outside for $15. We went on a Saturday night without reservations and we were lucky enough to pull a table because every seat in the house was full when we arrived. The ambience is enormous, noisy, and chic. There were several groups but if I were to imagine to bring a first date here it would be extremely hard to have a conversation unless you want yell at each other. Food: -Miso Soup (3.5/5): The miso soup here wasn't the best but everything else made up for it. It was pretty salty to me but the tofu and the green onions helped. -Hamachi Marrow (5/5): Wow! From the breezing scent of the sea, crafting patterns of good omega fats, those handmade drops of exactly-mouthful sushi rice, and when it touches your mouth, it is like melting blended to your tongue, accompanying with the taste of the blue world as such you are swimming with those fish or in this case yellowtail. -Unagi Foie (5/5): One word: Tasteful! My fav item. So flavorful. -Lobster and Wagyu (3.5/5): I truly expected more from this roll. It was decent not my fav. The aioli they used tasted like wasabi to me and it put an awful taste in my mouth. For the most part, majority of the items I ordered tasted outstanding. The sushi was so fresh that it melted in my mouth. My fav item on the menu was the Unagi Foie. I would highly recommend ordering this if you are a big unagi and Foie Gras fan. It only comes in pieces of 2 so I alone ordered 4 pieces! Highly recommend this place.

Lovely food, great atmosphere, LOUD music!

By Brian Buckley |

I loved Sunda. We were a group of 4 and each had a different main dish, all presented beautifully. All were very tasty too! The Pad Thai is stunning... The atmosphere is great but the 4 of us, average age 45, found the music very loud! We could easily have stood up to dance after eating.. The room is large, airy & stunningly decorated.

Great food and atmosphere

By 821errol |

The food, drinks and atmosphere were all on point. I visited this restaurant with for a business dinner. I would defiitely recommend giving it a try. It has a nice variation/blend of flavors from all over Southeast Asia. We tried several different dishes and all were good.

Excellence and Energetic

By Kankead8 |

We made a stop here for some Asian cuisine, and I realized that I had been here several times before. My experience here has always been excellent, but today...it was really above and beyond. The yellowtail jalapeño was wonderful, as was the tuna Tartare. I really enjoyed the tale of two tuna roll, and my favorite was the Red Dragon roll. As an aside, the Brussel sprout salad was fabulous too. We could hear well where we were, but in the past, it has been so loud that we could not hear one another. This is obviously a sign that people are enjoying themselves. I will no doubt come back to this splendid restaurant. The icing on the cake was twofold: the coconut mochi was outstanding and the bar had 15 yr old Papi....and it was reasonably priced!

Awesome South Asian place in Chicago

By MadKap |

This is a MUST visit place - for the food, the ambience, the service and the sheer energy and vibe. Options for vegetarians are limited but sufficient and amazing ! Try the fried chillies with anything you order. Nice cocktails. You need to book a table - they are quite busy. And if you have booked as a group they don’t usually let you sit until the full group has joined - which is a pity if other people are stuck in Chicago traffic !

One of the worst dining experiences ever.

By Ramy e |

The service was terrible (basically the waiter ignored us and we had to chase him to order things or ask questions). The quality of the food was poor and it caused me to have a diarrhea, I almost never have stomach problems. The place is overpriced and overrated, probably a tourist trap. Not only we are not going to recommend the place but we are going to warn everyone that we know about it. The dining experience ruined our evening.

Unimpressed

By Nez D |

Maybe dining in is a better experience than the takeout but i was not impressed by the food. I ordered from here based on the great reviews but the food was pricey especially for being so so. The Pork Belly Steam Bun was tasty but cost $14 for 4 and the Shrimp Pad Thai was just average, and to make matters worse, there were about 4 shrimps and it cost $18.

Liked it!

By 177Steve |

We both enjoyed our dinner in this "New Asian" restaurant. Had salmon and uni nigiri for starters with good cocktails. We were not very hungry this night so finished with mushroom dumplings and the pear salad. Noise level was high in this big room. Many interesting menu choices that we hope to try in the future.

Wonderful restaurant

By Florencia_Angelica |

This place is definitely one of my favourite in Chicago. Very busy. We didn’t get a full service table but a bar table. But still it was pretty good. The waiter helped us with the menu and recommended some great dishes. The Brussels sprout salad is definitely worth a try! The sushi was great too. I would definitely recommend this place but would suggest to book at least 3/4 days earlier to get a full service.

Came here with work colleagues

By Royce L |

Came here with work colleagues while we were in town. Cool ambiance and everything we had to eat was amazing! We shared several appetizers and tasted each other dishes and everything was good. The surf and turf sushi (don’t think it is called this but has lobster and beef) stood out in particular as well as the cod poached in miso. Would definitely go back!

Got sick after their food

By Aga |

I got sick after their seafood. I was sick all night and next day. I had to cancel my time with my 4year old son because of this. I contacted the manager and talked to him. I was treated as a liar. My friend convinced me to go there, since she used to go there on her dates. Now she nor I will never go back there. The manager didn’t even want to consider my sickness. He said they would not take any responsibility for my sickness or my friends sickness who got sick as well. They would not even consider giving me money back. It was very disappointing experience and I will never go back there nor I will recommend it. Leftovers are already in a trash.

Crispy Brussels sprout salad

By dstambaugh3 |

Another excellent experience. My wife really enjoyed an order of sweet potato caterpillar sushi. We both thought the crispy brussels sprout salad was outstanding. The staff was excellent, though we did not have reservations we were seated quickly and the waitstaff was excellent.

Fantastic food but unbearable noise

By exploringtodd |

I enjoyed every dish I sampled at Sunda and wished I could have tried many more from their extensive and interesting menu. However, the enjoyment of our meal was completely overwhelmed by the painful noise levels that made conversation a chore and dinner stressful. The staff was efficient, but the hectic environment and necessity to yell being heard made the interactions short and the point. This is a really good example for a foodie like me that success in the kitchen is not the only factor in a great dining experience. The restaurant is always packed so I am not expecting they will ”fix” the environment any time soon. A call to an acoustical consulting firm and a few well placed fluffy clouds should tame the noise without dimming the lively atmosphere. I hope they do address the problem because the food is amazing.

Loud but with good food

By Coyote-Travelerz |

The menu offers a good variety of food choices for carnivores and vegans alike. We ordered a good selection of items and throughly enjoyed all of them. My complaint is how noisy it was in the restaurant. We were 9 at a large table and found it hard to converse. Also, some portions are small, so be sure to ask about portion size if unsure of it. I think I’d give it a higher rating if I had been there at a less busy time.

Wonderful asian food

By danslove915 |

Food was fresh and very flavorful. The restaurant itself was very beautiful and spacious. Food came out relatively fast which was nice. Service could of been a bit better with asking for refills on drinks but I do realize it was NYE and busy. We will be back!

Delicious Asian fusion

By bebot1 |

Flew to Chi- town over the weekend to see friends. Swung by Sunda for after-dinner drinks but (being Filipinos), we had to try the “humba” and “halo-halo”. Divine!

Overrated, no longer unique

By LucyLuChicago |

I have made a point to come to Sunda any time I am in Chicago, but that will be my last. In contrast to the excellent and unique Asian fusion served years ago, our dishes did not taste fresh nor inventive. They have lost that “it” quality that shot them to top of the ratings. Way too overpriced for what felt like mass produced food. Bottom line: Overpriced and tired.

Another Enjoyable Visit

By Kurt N |

We try to eat at Sunda every time we are in downtown Chicago. They have not disappointed. Had the shiitake edamame dumplings and Asian pear salad to start; excellent. For entrees we had crispy rice seafood dynamite and the drunken noodles; everything was tasty and very good. For dessert had the banana dumplings with avocado ice cream; unique and tasty. They are always busy so make reservations; and be prepared for a somewhat nosy environment (large open room with hard surfaces so little sound is absorbed). Service was attentive as usual. Would rate a 4.5 if possible.

😢 not like it was in 2012

By congoroom |

Sunda used to be my most favorite restaurant in the city. They HAD a fantastic happy hour menu.....sadly 3 years later the happy hour menu is sparse and no longer a “deal”. The food is now just average. My favorite Brussel sprout salad was mediocre and I’m embarrassed because I had told my friend with me how amazing it was. I’m so sad!!!!!!! It’s still good, but now what it was.

Love, loved this restaurant!

By lilyeee |

The atmosphere, the service, the food….oh the food, so exceptional and unique. Remember to top it off with the Ridiculous as your dessert!!

Cool place but disappointing

By Kim A |

We read reviews and were excited to celebrate here. The place looks so cool! Unfortunately it’s so loud in there you could not even here the waiter tell about specials. Good food - really liked the pork belly dim sum and the tiger prawn apps and crazy rice. Disappointing food were beef lollipops and tuna poke. The service was great- our waiter was attentive.

Just close your eyes and point.

By billhollowsky |

Great Asian fusion food. We stopped in for a business dinner and were not disappointed. Great service and lots of great selections to choose from. Since there were several of us, we all tried different dishes and sampled many appetizers! Too many great options to list out. Just close your eyes and point.

Interesting extensive menu.

By Kylie G |

We had some sushi rolls, dim sum and the Kamayan feast. The feast was especially delicious. A combo of crispy pork shank, pork. Belly , Chicken, prawns, rice, green beans, mango abd line. Beautifully decorated either way flowers abd including two dipping sauces. Lovely cocktails. We had no room for dessert. The room is quite loud. We had no room for dessert. .

Not impressed

By Joseph C |

The service was wonderful but our outing with friends had few taste treats, The sushi was just ok and the main courses likewise,

Terrific atmosphere and food

By LoveTravel562098 |

Spending some time with my two youngest kids, downtown. After a long day on the beach, we walked to Sunda. Staff was exceptional. Pork belly dim sum was great but the wagyu fried rice was amazing!! Don’t miss that dish.

One of the best restaurants in the city

By kjm445 |

Not only is this one of the best places for sushi, it is one of the best restaurants the city has to offer. Everyone is very attentive, friendly, and professional. They set an extremely high standard and meet it. We had a sunrise roll, hamachi dish, and drunken noodle. It seems as though you cannot go wrong with anything. The fish was delicious and fresh, the noodles were some of the best I've ever had...all good things. Wouldn't mind making a personal goal to try everything on this menu.

A Trip Around Asia

By jdn604 |

The food was delicious. Crispy Brussel Sprout salad is a must! We also ordered the garlic crab noodles. Tasty. Service was lukewarm from our server, but the other staff were very friendly. We would definitely return and try more of the menu.

Really good food for sharing and nice atmosphere. Lots of parole on a Monday. Waiter did a good job and served us a selection that was delicious. Thanks

AMAZING

By Milinda J |

My husband and I were visiting Chicago and found this place online. I am so glad we did because it was SO good! It has a great atmosphere and is beautifully decorated. Our server was also amazing. He reviewed the menu with us and pointed out his favorites. We got a few things and shared. We ordered the pork belly steamed buns, oxtail potstickers, crispy rice with spicy tuna, lobster and Wagyu sushi and motchi ice cream for dessert and honestly everything was so good I could not even pick a favorite. I will definitely be coming back next time we are in Chicago.

Corotate Event - Five Stars

By Katherine W |

Our leaders raved about this dinner. They were so accommodating to our requests, the room looked beautiful, and the service was excellent. Of course, too, the food was absolutely incredible! My boss was extremely happy with this and we will definitely be hosting more corporate events with Sunda. Five stars all around!

Gluten free review

Excellent food. So many gluten free choices. Presentation was gorgeous, but more importantly the food was fantastic and I didn't get sick 🤩 Our server, Jonny, was great!

Sugar Galore in Dishes..Nice ambience & Poor Service

Every dish has spoonful's of Sugar. it's absolutely NOT authentic for anything except perhaps Miso soup. szechuan Chicken: Sugar Loaded burnt chicken. 1/10..it could well have been dessert Kai-Lan: Sugar syrup with Spinach 2/10 Cauliflower: Sugar Glazed Cauliflower. 2/10 I politely asked when ordering - can i pls have notthing sweet. $15 for valet...$150 for a lousy meal. i felt robbed. Lots of fake review's it seems.

Great!

By love2travel49022 |

Good service, delicious meal of drunken noodles, spicy chicken rice dish and large Asian salad. Large portions and plenty to take home. Bustling atmosphere. Enjoyed the meal experience.

The music is too loud

By janecS1001XO |

My friends wanted to go... but not me. I went anyway. My sea bass was awesome. We shared apps and the bbq ribs were full of cartilage , yuck and the dumplings were just slimy and doughy. Waste of money. whatever the shrimp app was it was only 1 shrimp per person, another waste of money. Who wants to just fill up on rice, not me , I am on keto. The bill was over 300.$... Again my sea bass was awesome, but the whole meal; NOT.

Tasty

By jemfromwales |

Nice food. We ate steamed buns with duck and tempura shrimp followed by a noodle dish and a duck fried rice, 2 glasses of wine each, $160. We ate enough. Noisy place, a bit imposing service. No chance to enjoy and digest. Many requests to order more. Became annoying

went here based on a friends suggestion

By laura j |

LEMONGRASS BEEF LOLLIPOPS were amazing! What a surprise. Not a huge fan of Asian food, yet this place was so delicious. Try the Duck Fried Rice.

So-so

By Culture Vulture 60657 |

It was a warm April day and we just wanted some good sushi for lunch. But not many of the better sushi restaurants are open for lunch so we decided to give Sunda a try. The menu offers a lot of those sushi rolls with offbeat ingredients like spicy mayo, jalapeños and such that I think obscure rather than enhance the taste of the fish. So we steered clear of them and went for classic nigiri. They were tasty but rather large, making them messy 2-bite sushi rather than neat one-bite sushi. Also expensive, so we decided to have just a few and try a couple other dishes to round out the meal. My companion ordered the tiger shrimp tempura; I had the Thai salad. There were plenty of shrimp in his and some nice candied walnuts. I liked his dish better than mine; there were many ingredients including shrimp, chicken shreds, peanuts, onion and salad greens but they had little flavor except for the citrus dressing which had quite a bit of heat from, I assume, chili oil. We each had a pot of green jasmine tea which came warm rather than hot. Service was attentive. The room, although only half-full at 1pm, was quite loud. It must be deafening when it's full and people are enjoying themselves at the bar. The room is big and stylishly decorated with exposed brick, wood, leather, mirrors and Asian artifacts. At lunch, it's a business crowd.

Great Atmosphere, Food a Shade Behind

By annarh60611 |

I was in Chicago from 24 June to today and visited Sunda last and this month. On the first visit, I arrived with a friend and her boyfriend on a Thursday without reservations. We were immediately seated, however, at the sushi bar. My friend’s boyfriend ordered for us (too hot to think about food) and the restaurant is known for shared plates. We got sushi, pad thai, and pork buns—all very good. The GM stopped by to ask if everything was ok as I was mid-bite and I gave an enthusiastic thumbs up. As we were plowing through dinner, it dawned on me that I’d been here on a visit 3.5 years ago. It was very good then, too. So, my son and I went earlier this week. We had the adobo over rice, the oxtail dumplings, the pork buns, and edamame. Everything was very tasty and a modern twist on very traditional dishes. It’s a bit overpriced on some items and a deal on others. I didn’t realize this spot is kind of a big deal. Love the decor and really like the food. Sunda is celebrating 10 years and I think it’ll keep going.

Dinner with friends

By MarthaWK |

Great vibe. Great service. Great selection of drinks. Great menu. Great flavors. Our table location was not my favorite as we were in the back along a busy walkway but overall a really great place.

YUM! But you’d better like it noisy.

By fussydame |

The room is huge, the clientele is lively and on a scale of one to ten, the sound level is eleven. That said, Sunda serves up some very tasty Asian-inspired food. No pretenses of ethnic authenticity here. It’s all contemporary, flavorful and fun. Same can be said for the delicious specialty cocktails.

Wow. Fresh, delicious

By 20_SandY_13 |

We came here with a group of 12 people. There was something for all tastes, from Pho soup with oxtail and bone marrow, to several vegetarian selections. We started small and added more items as we ate the meal, and service was swift. All the food tasted light and fresh.

LOVE!

By jennacory94 |

The crunchy tuna is to die for and the mocha ice cream was absolutely amazing! The decor is so pretty! I would recommend this for sure!

Christmas Eve Dinner 2024

By drddiamondd |

This is the second event this year that Nicole Salerno planned for me. The first was a business dinner for me to entertain a group from my largest client. This most recent was a Family Christmas Eve dinner. The managers and staff are all amazing. The star of the show was obviously the food. And, as my two Gen Z nieces said, “The phones eat first!” They took dozens of photos and of course posted them. I do want to say that my wife and I have been ranking our dining experiences around the world for many years. After our Christmas Eve dinner at Sunda, you have definitely made it into the Top 5 of any restaurant experience we have ever had. FYI: Our No. 1 restaurant is Café Drouant in Paris.

Good restaurant

By Florencia V |

The service was nice and friendly, the food was good but not excellent even though is a bit pricy. This is not a restaurant to have a calm dinner as they would put loud music and you can hear everyone sort of shouting as they try to talk to each other, you can see it's a hotspot because the food is not great and is pricy. And if you want a specific table you should make a reservation as all the tables are reserved otherwise they'll send you to some tall tables that are a bit uncomfortable. But if you want to try something new you should try it.

The brussel sprouts are craveable!

By Gina4488 |

I go back every time I am in Chicago just for the Brussel sprouts. There is nothing like it and it is deliciously good! Good cocktails, trendy environment, super service! Boxton was our waiter and did a great job taking care of us! We shared the steak lollipops were delish, there is a chicken served on a platter that is about 500 degrees and Divine. Great place, can’t go wrong!

Full of flavor & spice

By NicMoraXO |

First time in Chicago and first time at Sunda. My husband comes here every year on work and suggested we go and I can definitely see why. The restaurant is extremely loud so if you're looking to get into deep conversation I'd maybe select elsewhere. We ordered: Brussel sprouts - generous portion, really yummy, a bit oily. Wagyu Crispy rice and spicy tuna crispy rice - wish the crispy rice part was crispier but the wagyu was cooked to perfection Spicy edamame - YUM Hamachi Sashimi - melts in your mouth Rainbow roll - it was ok. Can't really go wrong here. Tuna 2 ways - it was good, not outstanding. Baked crab handroll - a MUST!!!!!! this is one of the best baked crab handrolls I've ever had. Tuna nigiri - pretty basic. I'd come here again and pray that it wasn't as loud

Delicious, interesting, and nice vibe

By 13ellezee |

The vibe/decor at this restaurant is really attractive. The food was pretty great. The service was friendly and efficient (although at 8:30 on a Monday night, it was not crowded). There was a lot of creativity in the pan-Asian menu and everything we ordered was tasty. I took off one star just because it's supposedly a tapa-style sharing menu but if it's your first time there, there's no way to know how big the portions are, and we ended up ordering WAY too much food, which went to waste, since we were traveling and couldn't take a doggy bag. Our particular favorites were the Wagyu crispy rice rolls which just melted in your mouth with amazing flavor, and the "tacos" which were not actually in taco shells but seemed to be in mooshoo pancake shells. Very delicious. The least favorite thing we ordered was the Korean fried chicken bao. The chicken was really good but it was drowned in too much mayo. All in all, I would definitely recommend this restaurant with the caveat that you should be aware that the portions are larger than normal for tapa style. (PS: Just FYI there is valet parking available right out front, but they only take cash).

Awesome food and service

By Matt_from_Chicago |

Went here with my friend for dinner. In a word: delicious! The combination of flavors was awesome! Cool atmosphere and excellent service. Bring your wallet! Note that restrooms are on the lower level.

Great brunch!

By lovesvacation97 |

Ambiance was nice. Server was friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes . Food was flavorful. Love the ube waffles and Japanese chicken. The pork belly buns burst with different textures and taste. Garlic rice was aromatic. Longganiza can be better. Vinegar sauce can use a little more spiciness and fish sauce. Overall, I would come back to try other dishes esp with dinner menu. Wish we had room for dessert.

Amazing food

By Trisha_in_DC |

Sunda offers a long list of mouth-watering dishes from Asia. My friend ordered Curry Chicken served in a coconut shell. Beautiful and very delicious. I had an amazing Shrimp Pad Thai. The food was great. The restaurant was tastefully decorated eventhough it was too dark. It was not easy to read the menu in such a dim light. The service was quick and efficient but our waitress was like a robot, not showing any welcoming voice and gesture.

Good concept. Average food

By Scubagirlj18 |

great menu but the flavor isn’t quite as good as i was expecting. The gluten free menu is quite expansive but my order came out contaminated

Excellent lunch

By JD_pgh |

Came here on a Saturday for lunch with my husband and 2 kids (8&11). There is a brunch menu and we also ordered sushi. Food is delicious and service was great. Love the atmosphere here. Try the Gambler roll. One has ghost pepper. We also had the cauliflower hash and bi bim bop rice both excellent.

Annual Company Christmas Dinner

By NPC98 |

We had our annual company Christmas dinner at Sunda on December 8th and it was amazing...best one yet! Nicole Salerno organized the entire evening for us including a table at the Underground Cocktail Club. We had a private room that included a bar. We kept the bartender Ezra busy all night slinging drinks for us. Our waiter Sam was outstanding as well and tended to our every need. The food was delicious...from appetizers to main courses and desserts. Nicole helped us choose items for a few dietary restrictions as well. I left my coat at Underground and she tracked it down for me too! I would not mind having our annual dinner at Sunda every year.

Great Bang for your Buck

By Matt F |

My table enjoyed a wide assortment of items from the menu and not one of them disappointed. We especially liked the crispy chicken skin. Our waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. At the end of the meal, we were surprised at how affordable it all was.

Always Delicious

By DboyNpink |

Stopped at Sunda for a couple of cocktails and light bites. Ended up staying for dinner because everything was so delicious. Do not miss the Brussel sprouts, the roasted cauliflower, the cocktail with Lychee (don't remember the name), and the Yellow Fin Tuna Sashimi!

Crushed it!

By HighPlainsDrifters |

They crushed it..Covid be dam**d! As good if not better then their early days. Service above and beyond. We had a Vegetarian, Pescetarian, meat eaters, and someone with Celiac. Special GF menu and adapted dishes. Stars of the show: Sticky Rice, Pork Bao, Special Crab hand roll, sweet potato roll, brussel sprouts, garlic crab noodles. And more. We are part time Chicagoans, and after eating at so many of the hot new trendy places along with some old go to's, Sunda still delivers and was our fave in the last two months.

Private dinning is a must have!

By Lester R |

Everything was amazing. The lighting was perfect for the private birthday event I hosted. The setup was very customizable. The server was exceptional and went over and beyond. Only suggestion I made was for the music to be slightly louder during cocktail hour. However, when we asked, they did accommodate right away. I personally enjoyed the food and portions served. Looking forward to the next one. Emily and Nicole were 5 stars by themselves with the communication, speedy reply, and ease of working with. Amazing!!!

Very good!

By Bobbie W |

Everything was wonderful. They take reservations which is a definite plus. It was a lovely night out, so we were able to sit outside. Service and cleanliness was impeccable. All our dishes were wonderful. My personal favorites were the Lemongrass salad, crispy rice with tuna and the pad Thai. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

We were looking for the best sushi in town, not sure this was it. Unique N/A options.

By Thara R |

Nice ambience. Gluten free & vegetarian options. Guys at the front of house were friendly, welcoming, & helpful. Nolan, our waiter was very familiar with the menu. We tried both their N/A beverage options. I was excited to see that the Emerald 13 included pandan - very unique! I enjoyed it after adding some water & lemon to offset the incredible sweetness. I would enjoy it as a dessert rather than a cocktail. The strawberry lemonade was fresh tasting & not quite as sweet. We came there for the sushi so we didn’t try any of the other dishes. The menu is set up for sharing which was nice. The red dragon roll was good but predictable. The island roll gave us more of a wrap vibe but might be good if you wanted something really light. Overall the sushi wasn’t bad but IMO overpriced. I have had more interesting rolls.

A Delightful evening

Celebrated our daughter graduation dinner at Sunda-fantastic experience. Excellent recommendations by the staff , was not even necessary to look at the menu !!! Excellant flavours, exotic names and presentations, good portions-t was an excellent combination. Thank you Sunda staff.

Sunda's Bloody Marys

By Kathy G |

If you are looking for a Bloody Mary that is a wonderful meal in itself, you must go to Sundra and have one of their Sumo Mary's! It was great. Plus they have a wonderful Bloody Mary and Champagne bar with all the fixings. Great place for Brunch!

Misleading name, decent Asian fusion cuisine

By sakusa2016 |

If you're familiar with South East Asia, don't get fooled by the 'Sunda' name - the waiter looked dumbstruck when we asked him why there were no Sundanese items on the menu! While their Pear salad just pretended to have pears, the Shiitake dumplings and Oxtail Potstickers were quite good, making for an interesting palate of tastes and textures

Ok, but not GREAT.

By Mon C |

Our meal was good, but not great. Each dish left more to be desired. We started off with the crispy brussels sprouts salad. The flavors were very good, but it wasn't crispy. The salad itself was a bit soggy. We had the lemongrass beef lollipops which were chewy and overcooked. The tiger shrimp tempura had a think breading which was not as tasty. I would say skip the steamed buns (pork and duck) as they were not good at all. The duck was overcooked with too much sauce trying to overcompensate the dryness. We ended the meal with the red dragon, which actually was good, except for the fact that they ran out of low sodium soy sauce and only had regular soy sauce. That alone I find unacceptable for a sushi restaurant. Chicago is full of amazing restaurants, I would say pass on Sunda and go to another place that would have better food.

Excellent food & buzzy atmosphere

By traveller_constant |

Ate here for dinner in a private room as part of a large business group. Food was first class and a good mixture of dishes - prawns with walnuts, asparagus & mushroom salad and oxtail dumplings were highlights and the warm coconut mini cookies were outstanding. I don’t eat sushi but colleagues who did said it was very good. The main restaurant was absolutely packed but a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Love, love, love!

By Carrie S |

We had so much fun here; ordered 6 different things and enjoyed them all. The lemongrass salad was great, the fried chicken buns were okay. The lemongrass beef was amazing, the crazy rice, was crazy good. The broken noodles were fabulous as well. Totally didn't like the rice wrapped ice cream dessert. Great service, pricey but memorable!

Top quality for food, value and service

By Anthony m |

Absolutely fabulous find in chicago. Sleek and classy with a super atmosphere. Our waitress was attentive and helpful particularly with the extensive saki menu! The food was sublime and extremely good value. Be sure to book in advance....it was very busy on a cold and damp Tuesday evening

Excellent

By Melissa H |

This restaurant is excellent. But be prepared that they serve small plates meant to share and food comes when ready. We took our 10 year old daughter who disappointed that sesame chicken wasn’t on the menu but she did find rainbow roll sushi. The Brussels sprouts are amazing, the crazy rice is spicy and beef pops are delicious. I recommend this restaurant but it’s only for the adventurous eater.

Amazing food and customer service.

By carly p |

We went here as a family dinner! 10/10 experience- our waitress was so lovely and made sure everything was okay and kept our table tidy. All the people were so kind and the sushi was amazing- some of the best food I’ve ever tried! There are a range of vegan and vegetarian options which are all so good. Staff go above and beyond in tending to our requests. Highly recommend.

More “American Pho” and a handful of mints!

By MBA-OGTA |

Back again...and again...SUNDA is a blast. The Pho is just not quite Vietnam but that’s like going to the Sonoran Desert because it’s the closest thing to Mars. So, SUNDA Pho is as good as it gets without spending thousands and sleeping in airports. The sushi is totally excellent...geez..what’s to say? If Asian-Fusian is your thing, expect everything you want - great flavors, fun presentation and...terrific service. To that end, thank you Mr. Maitre’d and “Tina” - you helped cap a successful business day by steering our choices and just the right amount of service, hospitality and engagement. I don’t recommend stealing handfuls of mints from SUNDA...but I did. They were delicious too. Coming back? For sure. See you again.

Fabulous sushi

By krlesp |

This is one of our must visit restaurants when we are in Chicago. The waitstaff is always friendly, courteous and professional. The sushi and rolls are without a doubt the best we’ve ever had in the United States. The Miso soup is delicious and the edamame is the perfect appetizer. Chris (the General Manager) is always friendly and welcoming. During this visit we brought our granddaughters and Chris introduced himself to them and sent over a fabulous fried ice cream Sunday with caramel sauce and pecans . It was absolutely beautiful and the girls had to take pictures and send them to their friends back home

Oldie but goodie

By debrav225 |

Sunda has been around for awhile but the food and service are still awesome and it is a fun scene. We like to sit at a table in or near the bar.

Average At Best and Disappointing

By Walter O |

Average to slightly disappointing. There is a lot of seating so that makes for quite a bit of background noise. Do not plan on having an easy time hearing one another. The Edamame was decent. The steamed buns were average. I ordered the Lemongrass Beef Lollipops and they had a nice flavor. Someone ordered the Escolar "The Great White" and it was extremely disappointing. Two specks of fish the size of a quarter and a tiny potato chip on each (crumbs). We expected more. There are so many other great places to eat in Chicago. This is not one of them.

We Love Sunda!

By GrandMasterOfTravel |

Sushi is very good and the dishes you see below are really delicious. It’s an Asian Fusion take and I’m sure you will be impressed. Every time I’ve been to Sunda, the food was very exceptional. The deserts are amazing! We always get the two you see below. Have a great time and enjoy!

Creative Asian Fusion

By qmiller1 |

Large selection of Asian fusion entrees and appetizers. From Sushi to Curry dishes to Dim Sum. It’s farm to table fresh, and everything we ordered was delicious. There are so many items on the menu, you could go back and try something new each time. We shared several dishes amongst the table. Also we called for and got a reservation even though Open Table did not show available. Inside is a trendy environment but also was loud. We ate outside since the weather was nice.

A wonderful surprise

By Moira G |

Booked this restaurant through OpenTable when in a hurry whilst traveling. It was the last night of our family vacation. It was such a great sharing meal. The flavors were fabulous. We selected lots of small plates and the dishes came out kind of randomly, which was fun. The atmosphere buzzing. It’s not for a quiet night out! Our server was Boxton. He rocked.

Sunday Brunch

By Darlene K |

We were a party of 5 so our waiter suggested that we share our entries. Our first selection was the Brussel sprout salad and pork buns. Both were excellent choices. We decided on the sushi roll with shrimp and avocado. For our meals we had crazy rice, pork and shrimp noodles and oyster mushrooms. The entries were delicious and perfect portions for our party. Our waiter (Dan) was awesome. He paced our menu so we could enjoy the flavors of the food.

Great Food and Atmosphere

By Bradley G |

Sunda is visually appealing, had a high energy vibe and great food! A combination of reasonably traditional Asian and some interesting “fusion” dishes made ordering fun and all dishes were very good. Our party of five shared everything- garlic crab noodles, lemongrass beef skewers, tempura/spicy tuna roll, miso cauliflower, crispy rice sushi and others. All tasty, fun drink concoctions- overall enjoyable evening with great food.

Lovely high end Chinese dinner at a very high energy restaurant in Chicago

By Anthony S |

We had an excellent high end Chinese dinner at Sunda. It is very high energy and gets a very attractive clientele. The décor is very modern. The food is excellent and the Chinese menu is very varied. However the cocktails were disappointing. The prices are high. The wait staff was professional and efficient. The location is excellent on Illinois Street. I'd have given Sunda 5 stars if the cocktails had been better. We recommend Sunda

Incredible evening - gorgeous food and great vibe

By Lena Arbery |

Fantastic restaurant in Chicago which was the base of a great evening. Perfect table - such a good atmosphere and the food was perfect. Really buzzy place and surrounded by great bars. Loved the cocktails!!!

A new place to try

By chihchen69 |

The special oxtail is good, would be better if the peanut sauce can be less strong. Penang chicken is way too spicy.

Very good eclectic Asian Cuisine

By Jim S |

The food was very good! We loved the variety of steamed buns and pot stickers as well as the street corn and generous sushi servings. This is a good place for vegetarians. As others have noted, this restaurant is very loud. Service was good but our waiter had to get close to us in order to be heard, so we wish she had warn her mask properly.
