Really Uniquely Diverse Vietnamese Croatian Crusine

By MarshBruce |

A restaurant that they just don't have in most cities. Rated as some of the best Pho in the city along with a nice selection of Croatian specialties. Full bar service. Street parking. Eastern European setting.

The menu boasts an exciting fusion of flavors, and the full bar features specialty spirits from around the globe. Owner Zelimir is warm and welcoming, offering first-time guests a taste of his homemade liquor. For a memorable dining experience, visit this hidden gem in the heart of Chicago. Yoga Party!!

At long last we got together for a post yoga dinner. One of the yogis suggested Sunset and everyone loved it!! It was certainly a great choice!!!

I'll try again

Pros: Superb pho - love the spicy lemongrass version with beef and pork! Great appetizers, including the cevapcici spring rolls - what a great combo of cooked meat and fresh veggies! Peanut sauce is A+!!! Cons: Vietnamese Iced Coffee did not come with the traditional filter on top of the glass - I need the drip experience! Just improper. What a bummer. We had a particularly slow and forgetful server. Luckily the female owner was there to take our order and make recommendations!

Delicious and Fresh. Reasonable too.

Early Sunday dinner, we arrived around 5:30PM. Wasn't sure what to expect but everything was delicious. We tried the veggie Spring Rolls, Scallops in Yummy Sauce, Seafood with Crispy Noodles and Veggie Pho. The fresh ingredients were wonderful. The owners and waitstaff were very attentive. I also had a Mai Tai and it was tasty and just strong enough. It's hard to pick one dish as the best they were all so very good. Don't be in a hurry, stay a while and savor their wonderful dishes!

A gem and you need to go here

SO GOOD! We not only loved the food but the staff (owners included) were so personable and nice to talk/dine with. Can't wait to go back.

Vietnamese Eastern European Croatian Fusion but needs some improvement

By Art J |

Another Hit or Miss place for Vietnamese Cuisine. It is difficult for me to give it 4 stars because of inconsistency of the quality of food and the service. Sometimes the Pho can be great and some days it is NOT. I find that strange. Another thing about the place is that the servers are quit slow to deliver at times. I have gone here because 2 of my close friends love going here and treating me here. I have dined in on my own bringing my mother to get her opinion and she liked it. Only thing again I notice is the inconsistency of how the Pho is cooked. Sometimes they give you more or less the lean beef or the fresh Basil and other traditional vegetables that usually go with Vietnamese Pho broth. I do give them a lot of credit for the their signature Jugoslavian Sausage dish spring roll or Cevapcici Spring Rolls . This is actually a Vietnamese Croatian fusion. The reason behind this is because the owner's of this Restaurant is a Husband who is Eastern European Croatian and the Wife is Vietnamese. That dish is delicious. This is where other Vietnamese Restaurants do not offer in Chicago that this restaurant delivers best. They also have a bar to drink as well. The 2 things where they fail is the servers trying to deliver on time the food if dining in and if the Pho's are prepared well. If they can improve those 2 things I can give them 1 or 2 stars more.

Cozy family owned Vietnamese Cafe

I thoroughly enjoyed my early evening visit here yesterday and the pho here I can attest is extremely fresh and clean tasting with a flavorful and healthy broth. I chose the traditional style chicken 🐔 pho which is very simple and not spicy at all. Spices are provided for you at your table such as Siracha sauces and chilli 🌶 pastes so you can add them into your pho 🍜 to your level of spiciness. I also chose their unique version of Thai iced tea which looks more like a Japanese Boba tea 🍵 with froth at the top, extra strong black tea tapioca Boba pearls. I thought it was a bit too strong but if you're a fan of bubble teas 🍵 you might love it. The soup was generously portioned with incredibly tasty chicken meat and delicious noodles. The cost was around $17 plus for the pho and $7 for the Thai bubble tea. The atmosphere here is casual and relaxing and my friendly waitress is the daughter of the owners. If you appreciate good pho in a relaxed setting you will definitely appreciate this Vietnamese cafe.

Vietnamese and Yugoslavian

Food is very good and the place is very active and packed on a Wednesday night. The two owners have different backgrounds, but maintain a high standard.

Absolute Hidden Gem

This is a must stop if you love great food. You walk in and realize right away the place is a gem. It is a very relaxed and beautifully space. There is a little tavern hidden in the restaurant where you can pull up a high chair and have a drink. Then there is the food! Maybe the best vietnamese I have ever had. Dishes are delicious and very large portions. We had pho soup, rice, an egg noodle dish and we could not stop eating. Our 13, 11, and 8 year old girls loved the food. The owners offer a unique blend of veitnamese and Jugoslavian and are super friendly. We had a unique Croatian/Yukoslavian beer that was so refreshing with our meal on the advice of the owner. We spent 14 days in Chicago before heading back to Canada and this was our best meal and we had some really good food! Could not rate this place high enough.

Vietnamese and Croatian fusion is so very very nice. Scrumptuous food in a family setting. Great bar to watch soccer. Eager to please and very nice friendly owners. Love it And can’t wait to return.

wonderful Vietnamese with a little croatian thrown in

recently a friend a I had been to a movie theater and were looking to find somewhere to eat nearby. We stumbled into Sunset Pho which had just been opened and we were delighted. The hosts were a man from Yugoslavia who had married a woman from Vietnam who also supervised the food, which was excellent. The wonderful pho was accented with cevapcici sausage, and made a delightful combination. Spring rolls were very good. All in all we were very pleased and have been back several times.

Great place to eat!

Delicious Pho

Been here twice. Best pho soup and I've been to many restaurants for pho! Got the pho with tofu (perfectly cooked) and vegetables with rice noodles, and the chicken broth. The flavor is incredible. I am definitely going back again even tho I live 35 miles away.

Surprise! GREAT food in a surprising location.

Charming place. Wonderful hostess/owner who cares about her business. Married to a Croation, the strange mix produces cevapcici spring rolls that are sublime. Great Pho, # 26 with flank steak was super tasty with a generous portion of tender and tasty meat. I will certainly return! Not really near anything....it would be easy to pass on a section of Western Ave that's mostly body shops. It's worth the stop!

Wonderful pho away from uptown

Super friendly owner that made us feel like we were guests in his home. So, let me explain the lay of the land. A Croatian man and Vietnamese women set up shop in west Rogers park along Western avenue. So, on the surface, this may not seem your traditional place to get pho. Perish the thought. The food is authentic and tasty. We had the chicken pho, pho tai Bo vien, and the lightest shrimp egg rolls. Full bar, although we did not partake. Super friendly owner. We will be back.

Great local option in a cool windy day.

We both had pho’s; chicken & beef. They’re not shy w the noodles and the broth is absolutely amazing. They were so flavorful and well balanced in flavors.
