This place is the Best and Freshest Sushi you can get, 21$ sashimi Lunch Special is a great deal. Arrive at 10:30 am to wait in line. They open at 11:15 am. Pepe the server is Friendly and very helpful if you have any questions about the sushi. Love Love Love this Place.

If you have not been here you are missing out on really good, authentic Japanese food. You must book ahead at least a week! In atmosphere it is the closest to being in Tokyo I have been to. The service is swift and the clientele were lively. The menu is big and rather daunting. For a first visit I would recommend choosing a set meal like sashimi platter or the chicken teriyaki. Both come with miso soup and tempura. Dinner for 3 and saki $120.

Came here for lunch. For the price you’re paying you do get decent Japanese sushi and sashimi. Highly recommended!

I had a business dinner to organize, so I asked LA area Japanese friends what they would suggest in the Little Tokyo area. Sushi Gen was consistently recommended, much to my surprise. I had gone here over 20 years ago and remember enjoying a fairly standard but good sushi. Little Tokyo has been undergoing a lot of changes, so I had heard, and I expected to see many new hipsterish places with old guard ones shuttering. While this is true of the area, Sushi Gen is still going strong. The sushi is excellent. The fare is standard 'edomae sushi' (Tokyo style). Other dishes are excellent and all fairly traditional Japanese food (no rock n roll maki or curry something or another, no ramen). I was especially excited to get a side salad of salmon skin and an appetizer of mozuku (vinegared kelp strands) and tororo (grated mountain yam), which are standard fare in Japan, but not well known in the US. The service was friendly and efficient (and better if you speak Japanese!). The place was crowded, even on a Wed night. So, if you want to get authentic, traditional, delicious Japanese food that is a little nicer than a noodle shop, go here! My Japanese friends did not steer me wrong. Oh, and the prices are amazing, considering what you get (maybe about $30 per person excluding alcohol)

The long line is a hit or miss. I've gone for lunch during the week a couple times and not had any wait time at all. The sushi or sashimi special is the BEST!!!

I took about 30 minute wait to be seated, but it was worth itI ordered omakase. Everything I got was perfect.

I've worked in downtown LA since the late 80's. I don't quite recall when I started going to this establishment, but whether it's lunchtime or dinner, if you don't stand in line prior to opening, you will be waiting for a seat. That said, the wait line is exemplary of the food and service at Sushi Gen. Set in a non-descript strip shopping center in Little Tokyo, the food is outstanding. Sushi (try to get a seat at the bar) is as good as anything in LA...plus the lighting and décor of the sushi bar is comparable to a Tokyo-style outlet...The menu is fairly traditional but does contain a good selection of 'Anglicized' dishes, for your Japanese food novices. But overall whether its sushi, sukiyaki, tempura, teriyaki or udon, Sushi Gen is a top choice in downtown LA....just remember about the wait!

The wait start at the Parking lot entrances, they let you in as soon as one is leaving ! And at the restaurant to be seated! Once you in, the service is not the at the restaurant focus ! GOOD FOOD is ! Good ingredients, Fresh, Skillful Chef ! Pricing is good, not cheap ! YUM ! Then after dinners, walk across to this Macha Tea House for Macha ice Cream !

Want a little abuse with your sushi? Then look no further than Sushi Gen. They don't take reservations, which is fine. So we arrived and put our name on waiting list. They said the wait would be 30 minutes. It turned out to be an hour and a half and during that time standing in the parking lot of the strip mall they inhabit, many people who came well after us were seated well before us. We finally examined their wait list and realized there were two columns to it and that the two weren’t treated equally. Exactly what they based their segregation upon, I suspect, but can’t know for sure. Regardless, the sushi did not justify the long wait and the *rude* attitude of their two “hosts”. (What kind of sushi would justify such inhospitable treatment?) Yes: it’s really good sushi. But there are probably twenty other sushi restaurants in Los Angeles that are as good or better. So why eat where they treat you like they could not give a damn that you are there. (And maybe preferred you weren’t.)

Clean, great customer service, great food. AMAZING! Completes our LA experience. I love sushi even more after eating the fresh, tasty, sushi from Sushi Gen. The chef are also really good at what they do. Overall. I love it!

Good food, nice services. Lots of Japanese people visit this place as well. All I did was order what ever the Japanese order. I mean it must be good if the Japanese order right?

This little sushi place in Honda Plaza (Little Tokyo), Los Angeles, has been around for as long as I can remember. Though the old guys behind the sushi bar have now been replaced by a younger generation chefs, the place is still packed nearly every night. Reservations are not taken, just first come first serve, so you go take a number and just wait for your turn. I miss the boisterous greetings and bidding farewells by the sushi chefs from the by gone days, the ambience is just not quite as it once was. The sushi is still relatively good but I am nostalgic for those served by the prior generation chef. Grilled fish can be a bit better, so sushi might be a better bet to order. Parking is within the plaza and costs $3 with the validation, so don't forget to get your parking ticket stamped before you leave. You can take a nice stroll around Little Tokyo as a bonus.

This might be the best sushi bar in town, always busy so makes for a more rushed experience but the fish is as good as it gets. Recommended to get there 30 min before they open.

One of my family´s favorite restaurants. Fresh fish, good service and reasonable prices makes us go pretty often.

Long wait, but worth. Food very good as well as service if u seat at the Bar The quality of the sushi was excellent the chef was friendly

Went there specifically for its sashimi bowl during lunch time. You won't be disappointed. Just remember to get there early as there is line to get in.

Probably one of the better-value sushi joints in LA. The service is prompt and efficient, the portions large and fresh, and there's always a line waiting to get in.

If you're looking for traditional sushi, this is the place. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the staff is very professional and kind. According to prices is expensive.

This is the best place for sushi in Los Angeles or probably one of the best all around. I have had sushi in other countries (Japan and Taiwan) and I would put it to be as good as those locations. The restaurant is not what I would consider a "high end" environment as compared to some of the other restaurants I have been to, however, I believe the sushi bar is among the best in terms of freshness and quality. I normally order the Omakase and it has never disappointed. I would highly recommend any who has the opportunity to visit Little Tokyo in Los Angeles to make a stop. You will leave happy! One caution to note is to plan to wait about an hour to get seated. I would say this is a drawback should you not have the patience to wait. However, if you are able to deal with it, you will be happy!

My husband and I are very fond of sashimi/sushi My sister enjoys teriyaki and tempura. The sashimi/sushi extremely fresh and the teriyaki tasty and the tempura crisp. Will definitely return.

I don't like sushi much but I'm so happy my family convinced me to go here. Top quality food! I highly recommend checking this place out if you're ever around.

My mom and I come here whenever we have a little extra money to blow on sushi. The wait is very long however. We try to get to the restaurant around 11:30 to beat the lunchtime crush.

The sushi here is excellent. The tuna roll is very good. It is a very long wait to get in but it is worth it.

Our server made the experience perfect. She brought out the food all at the same time and brought us anything we asked for. Would definitely come back to this place!

So freaking good, you're going to enjoy it. Stopped in for a quick bite, stayed for an hour. Food was fresh and tasty

Me with my friend go for lunch. Great time we spend here, I had read and heard many good things about the place. Amazing food!

I have had sushi all over the world and this place is 1: overpriced and 2: really too high ranked. Really underwhelming and dissappointed evening

Best quality sushi you can get in the area. Expect to wait during normal eating times but it's worth it. There is a sushi bar and regular tables. Menu includes a few other items besides sushi but it's all about eating the high quality fish. Depending on what you think is expensive or not, the price reflects the quality.

The freshest cut sushi in Los Angeles!! Go where the Sushi Chefs go!! I recommend this location to every family member and friend visiting. Trust me the line is worth it. Go at lunch time during the week day for the best deals. Keep your party below 4 and sit at bar for immediate seating. Love this sushi place!!!!

good service and food are excellent and unique and the taste and flavor and how fresh the fish and shushi is the best in town

Good service, very reasonable prices and friendly wait staff.. It's my local hangout. Give it a try. Love the variety of sushi

The fish and experience here was one of the best I have had in LA--and that is saying something. There are not too many other sushi restaurants I've tried with such fresh fish. I would highly recommend Sushi Gen to anyone looking for an amazing Suish experience in LA. However, be prepared to wait if you arrive during peak hours.

Was made to go by my daughter's, I was not disappointed. The sashimi set meals were excellent value for money and came with soup, pickles and tempura prawn and vegetables. If you are in Little Tokyo it's well worth a visit.

The best Sushi I ever had in Los Angeles. They have a complete list of almost all sushi items one can imagine.

Having enjoyed sushi and sashimi for almost 30 yrs, I have finally found my number one Japanese sushi restaurant!! Its high rating on TripAdvisor (and on my top lists) is no exaggeration, this place is legit and authentic! Located in a somewhat dated strip mall setting in Little Tokyo, you’ll be advised to come early to avoid the long wait times (our party arrived at 4:40 and we were seated about 20-25 mins later). Our party of 4 specifically requested to sit at the long wraparound sushi bar manned by about 8-10 sushi chefs. Seated next to our wonderful friendly sushi chef/master, this was hands down the absolute best and most unique sushi experience as we placed our order directly with Toyo-San, ordering one or two nigiri at a time off the a la carte menu. Within minutes the nigiri was placed on our wooden geta plates, with coveted instructions on whether or not to eat with soy sauce or wasabi. Everything we savored was just the freshest quality and many simply melted in your mouth. Definite must-try’s include engawa (fin of halibut, which I’ve never seen), kanpachi, yellowtail and salmon belly, chutoro, amaebi (the shrimp heads were cooked and brought to us) and sea urchin. You’ll find unique assortments of sushi not normally available in most sushi places, like half beak, sea bream, gizzard shad, Japanese mackerel, scallops and herring roe. It was fun to pick and choose and walk up and down the a la carte menu, creating our own “omikase” meal. Though seated at the bar, the wait staff efficiently whisked in and out to refill drinks, bring hot fare like tempura and agedofu, and clear plates. The sushi certainly is not cheap but the unbeatable combination of the experience, customer service, and importantly the highest quality of sushi is priceless.

Everything we had was excellent! From the nigiri to the maki rolls, we loved everything! Highly recommended! Service was great too.

And they draw a big crowd, but to me very over-rated. Also, the manager would not let me watch while they took my credit card into the kitchen to run it. "Our insurance does not allow it." For the first time in 7 months a couple of weeks ago, I let a stranger have complete control of it, out of my sight, unlike in Europe & Canada, where security is better. or even in American when I walk with the server and watch them put the chip in (or swipe it).. Guess what happens this morning? Some cleaning supply charge is put onto my card on the web and I have to close it and get a new card and re-do monthly recurring charges. Was it Sushi Gen? How do I prove it but I know I'll never go back there again. My own insurance won't allow it.

You could be in Japan, but instead you are in LA's Japan town. So authentic you won't know the difference. The sushi bar is fantastic. I have been eating here for more than 20 years and it is always fantastic and always crowded. Arrive early

I was staying in Little Tokyo and wanted some authentic sushi…Sushi Gen is IT!An awesome symphony of flavors, texture, and atmosphere of Japanese sushi is found at Sushi Gen. Based on reviews, I visited the restaurant and will continue to visit again. For a Thursday evening at 6:30pm, it was already crowded! I was by myself so was quickly seated at the sushi bar where I evoked the magical words to the sushi master, “omakase” which means, please make what you believe would best highlight your skills as well as the freshness of the fish. Before beginning, the chef asked if I did not like anything, I did not and he started my experience with “toro” and “chu toro” (fatty tuna and medium grade fatty tuna). OMG! The remainder of the night was a symphony of different flavor and skills highlighted – I did not recognize a few of the dishes, but did it matter? NOPE, because they were all delicious. The chef followed one order with another ensuring that the flavors complimented one after another. After placing the order, he would inform me of the fish and how best to eat it – with shoyu (soy sauce), ponzu, or as is. I paired my sushi with Sapporo beer, there are other Japanese beer as well as sake to compliment the food. Needless to say, I was ecstatic watching the chefs create masterpieces and working in an efficient and beautiful manner with little wasted motion. The “omakase” menu is not inexpensive so temper your expectations – however, you will not be disappointed. If you have not tired it, well worth it. Even if not there for the “omakase” menu, the remainder of the menu looks delicious. The hype for Sushi Gen is real – check it out yourself.

You always need to wait in a long queue to have this lunch special time. Even in the weekday noon. But it's worth waiting. Quite delicious and fresh.

It's like being in Japan!! Very crowded, arrive early if you don't want to wait. Excellent quality/price ratio.

fish is fresh, atmosphere great, service is great, happy people dinning there always, makes u feel at home

This place has been a Mecca in the sushi world for at least 25 years. Theres’ ALWAYS a line especially for tables because the sushi or sashimi combos are the best deal in town. You wont find better anywhere

My friend reserved this place for me, and I enjoyed their sushi very much. I did not like little tokyo so much, but I will surely come back for Sushi Gen!

If you are looking for a great quality Japanese sushi restaurant, look no further. This is one of the best but very expensive as it should be. The sushi is great but their sashimi omakase is fantastic!!!

My adult children love sushi and wanted to eat here. I am not a sushi person, but was sure I could find something to have as well. I enjoyed my dinner (soup, five pieces of tempura (2 shrimp, 2 zucchini, and 1 taro?), and a large piece of salmon with sticky rice for $23. The rest of my party loved their sushi. The bill for 5 was about $130 with tip, and no one could eat dessert. Highly recommended.

Without a doubt some of the best traditional sushi in Los Angeles. Excellent selection of fish. Friendly service.

If you want exceptional, traditional style, sushi, this is the "go-to" place. The sashimi just meeelts in your mouth. They also serve teriyaki and tempura, if you don't want seafood. Located in Little Tokyo, Sushi Gen is just a stone's throw away from downtown LA. The restaurant is about 2 store fronts wide in a strip mall. It is always busy for lunch and dinner so it's best to make a reservation if you don't want to wait for a table. They are open Tues-Fri for lunch and dinner and dinner only on Saturday. Yes, they are closed on Sun and Mon.

I started eating at Sushi Gen back in the 90's, and had eaten there at least a couple times a week for many of those years. The owner and other sushi chefs are master sushi chefs, classically trained. The fish served at Sushi Gen is always premium quality and the taste is always delicious. If you're wanting to eat the best sushi, do yourself a favor and go there. It's centrally located in Little Toyko, and expanded to accommodate the huge number of diners who line up to get a table or seat at the sushi bar. I have never been disappointed in anything I've eaten at Sushi Gen. The prices for the food are high, but so is the quality and the level of service, knowledge of fish and how to make and present the finest sushi. Don't miss this legendary sushi bar.

Very friendly staff and great tasting sushi. Wide variety to choose from. Very fresh looking and tasting.

Be prepared to wait an hour or more if u happen to get there after 11 am. Paid parking too. Food is good, even great especially since the wait makes you so hungry. The prices have gone up in the last few years I have been there. I like it and would like to keep coming basil but.... The wait !!!!!!

There is usually a line starting by 11 am for the 11:30 restaurant opening for lunch. If you can get in, the sashimi lunch special is legendary in LA as one of the best deals. Otherwise, wait for the second seating.

This is a friendly delicious spot that has a wonderful sushi bar. Where you can even watch sports. Try it.

It’s strange because the sushi doesn’t look different than any one else’s. But, the taste is indescribable. It must just be the freshness, but it’s amazing. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in the US. If you want to be seen go to Nobu. If you want sushi then this is it.

Love coming here a few minutes before noon and the crush of a crowd, and snarking a single seat at the counter. Long a favorite among the district's denizen, the place is busy. As you would expect for the prices, the choices are good, the fish is fresh and the portions generous. Expect to be rushed, but take your time, and have an inagi for the road,, another cup of tea, and smile.

Hands-down it doesn’t get better cleaner or more fresh than this place but be prepared to spend at least $100 for two not including alcohol for lunch. Truly spectacular can’t wait to go back

I've been eating here for 20 years and have never been disappointed. You get the best quality sushi possible and the portions (sushi or sashimi combo" ) are generous. You cant go wrong here

It is one of the best Japanese restaurants in LA, so far it is the best for me, but I have not been to every Japanese restaurants in LA, so I can not say it is the top one for everyone. My family (2 adults children included) all love having sushi there, and we have been there several times when we have celebrations for birthdays.

Stepping into Sushi Gen, essentially you are entering the premises of a sovereign outpost of Japan. Through a very 'space-optimized' waiting area in the entryway, there is a long sushi counter to the left of the host podium, and a dining area with several tables and booths, to the right. I have yet to sit at the sushi counter, but I do like to take one of the small tables with a view of the magic taking place there. The set menu is my usual order. Everything tastes wonderful, and is beautifully presented. No need to endure an 11 hour flight from here to Japan; just go to lunch or dinner at Sushi Gen! The cuisine, atmosphere, and service are all top-notch.

This is absolutely the best place to get sushi in downtown LA. It's worth the long wait to sit at the sushi bar. Everything is amazing and the sushi chefs are fun to spend time with. Prices are great too, you can actually afford toro sashimi here.

This is by far the best sushi you can have in LA. Authentic. Tasty. Good service. The only thing is you have to book ahead.

Very crowded. 1 hr waiting might be just normal there. Be there before they open. Recommend sushi bar for tasting all different. Their salad is good as well. It was the best sushi for me but a bit pricy

This is the classic LA sushi restaurant that has stayed true to its old self. Two pieces per order, fresh fish, typically served unseasoned, limited menu (has all the fish you would recognize). I have frequented since the late 80s and pretty much nothing has changed. Quality has been maintained and the no reservations plus a very long queue remains the trademark of this restaurant. Don’t expect surprises - you come here for the freshest pieces served unseasoned. Service is fast and I pretentious. Prepare for a long wait though. If you come late and wait for sushi bar the wait is shorter.

Fresh unique sushi, service is slow but it's well worth it. The Toro melts in your moth, the scallops are cut perfectly, the kampachi is prepared beautifully.

Had a chance to eat at Sushi Gen tonight. What a wonderful meal. Everything was super fresh, tasty, prepared professionally and enjoyable. Chef Masa was excellent, as were his colleagues. Nothing was less than excellent. Will go back again and again. If you are looking for sushi in LA, this is the place. Prepare to wait for a table, sushi bar is excellent. But WORTH the wait. Enjoy.

There has never been a better Sushi Restaurant EVER THE BEST FISH THE FRESHEST FISH The Nicest people You need reservations

Recommended by a local friend, this small strip mall sushi place hits the mark. Plenty of choices for the sushi lover as well as a variety of other Japanese favorites. Tempura dinner came with a huge amount of food - tempura, miso soup, bowl of sashimi and a seaweed salad.

I've been going to Sushi Gen for sometime now. The lines and wait times are definitely long for dinner on weekends which is when i go. The sushi is authentic and they have a nice selection of more exotic fish (which is becoming more and more common in other sushi places). They are consistent with quality of fish (8/10) and service (8/10). All around a very good dining experience which keeps me coming for me!

Great Sushi place!!! I absolutely loved it, awesome. Great service and the product as-well. Probably the best Japanese food that I have had in Los Angeles! Thank you very much!!

Sushi Gen had fantastic sushi. My wife and I completely over ordered with a Sushi dinner and a Sashimi plate. We were very suprized to get that bill and it was just over $60 I would have expected to pay much more for that quality of sushi. The restaurant is small and you need to have a reservation, if you don't show up on time expect to find somewhere else to eat.

Great Sushi. Recommend it.I especially loved the Blue Fin Tuna roll. And Also try the Sashimi. O. The service is great.

Is not hard to spot this place... always packed front and inside the restaurant at lunch hour. Why? They offer one of the best lunch menu. Nothing crazy nothing fancy just solid good quality sushi that makes you come back for more... no wonder this place is over 20 (? Or more) years and still running strong !

Best sushi outside Japan. Be there in Good time Because it Usualy is a waiting list. But so worth it!! Fantastic stuff, fresch food and authentic japanese style on whole expirience

We try menù a là carte, the must of this place is “fat tuna “ wonderful!! We Try also tempura and shashimi deluxe. I will sure come back before leaving L.A. Because it is so much fantastic the sushi. A must place if you will be bere in L.A ❤️

This is a casual restaurant in Little Tokyo in downtown LA. The sushi, sashima and assorted other items were all outstanding. This was the best sushi I have had since visiting Japan, and the prices were quite reasonable. Service also quite efficient and friendly. We shared sushi and sashima platters, both great with various tasty side dishes. I don't love downtown LA, but this restaurant really stood out.

We signed in with the host at 1830 hours and were told a 45 minutes wait. Looking at the waiting crowd, we expected that and started to line up outside in the cold, they don’t have a inside waiting area! I did check after about 1 hour and was told, by the very unfriendly host to be patient and we’ll be one of the next. We finally got seated at 2000 hours. Now to the Sushi; not outstanding, just regular run of the mill. We did not enjoy our visit. My recommendation, skip this place and go somewhere else, plenty of good sushi in Little Tokyo.

I have been going to Sushi Gen for about 20 years with parents, friends, and dates. First of all, the fish is very fresh. My favorite thing to do it sit at the sushi bar and order a platter of sashimi to share. Amazing quality and one of the few places where I would get uni. Also, they have great set/combo menu deals if you are not feeling sushi and more cooked fares. Never disappoints. Only thing is that they don't take reso and there is always a wait. So go early, put your names down and there are plenty of izakayas to whet your appetite while you wait for Sushi Gen.

Great little place with and authentic Japanese feel. The sushi was great and fresh. I would definitely return. One negative was the arrogant host who must actually believe that the place is so great because of his presence not the actual food or chefs...lol

Sushi Gen has been in business since 1980 and i’ve been frequenting with my family for 25 years +. The quality is one of the top in LA and prices are shocking good considering the quality. The sushi chefs are always so polite and masters at their craft. If you want to opt for the sashimi/ sushi dinners/ deluxe, you must sit at a table vs bar. It’s one of the best bargains you’ll find in the city. I like reading when people write that the staff is rude / abusive for having to wait in line. This place is run like an authentic Japanese restaurant. In Japan, ppl wait in line for hours even during lunch for good food. The bar does not have a breakdown prices on the menu. Having said that, prices are fair. I don’t imagine they would be in business for this long for gouging their guests. If you must know how the price of each item, don’t sit at the bar/ sit at the table.

The sushi is really outstanding here—the fatty tuna was truly melt in your mouth. Service is quick and friendly, just perfect for someone dining on their own. The place was hopping but I was seated quickly. A wonderful meal!

the quality far to beat the freshest fish just good sushi friendly and a must if you are in downtown area

Excellent Sushi Restaurant in Little Tokyo in Downtown LA. Everything we ordered tasted so fresh and delicious. There is a good reason a large crowd forms outside waiting to get a table. No reservations. Despite arriving just after 4pm on a Saturday afternoon, we had to wait for an hour for a table. However, it was well worth it, and the restaurant lived up to expectations. Not inexpensive but the quality justifies the cost. Once inside, service was no nonsense but efficient. However, we never felt rushed. Upbeat and lively atmosphere inside. This was the best experience ever at a sushi restaurant.

Incredible. Very fresh fish and we enjoyed every bite of what we ordered. Particular location: it is an old-fashioned place with a sushi counter in the center of the room. It is mainly frequented by locals. Fair prices. We loved everything!

This isn't a high-end fusion sushi restaurant. It's a real sushi restaurant like the ones you see in Japan. The sushi chefs are also real sushi chefs who know about sushi more than you know about your own life. The sushi they serve is really good. One of my favorite fishes is kohada (gizzard shad), and they made one of the best kohadas I've ever tasted. I also like chuutoro/otoro. The toro they have here tastes amazing (it should taste amazing anyway), but to be honest, it wasn't the best I've ever had. I tried aji and it was very nice too, which I recommend. The rest of the pieces were really great as well. If you want to have a real sushi experience (real albeit expensive), go there. P.S. This may be the best sushi restaurant in LA, but put it in Japan and it's another story. If you really love sushi, I highly recommend going to Japan and try the good sushi there. It's gonna change your life.

Carry out only but it worth the wait, I love sushi and this place has the best one i have ever had, very fresh, high quality ingredients.

I visited here with a critical sushi “gourmet” on a rare trip to DTLA from OC. We arrived early to avoid the crowd; timing is key. A line started forming 45 min. before lunch opening. At 11:25 when the door opened this Thursday, it’s like Black Friday as gratified patrons rushed in, jockeying for tables to be assigned. This has been a premier, well known sushi place in Little Tokyo forever, with a glorious record of crowd-pleasing fresh fish at reasonable prices. I looked at pictures of my visit here last year and seemed like nothing had changed. My companion ordered the chicken teriyaki and sashimi combo and I the sashimi lunch special. Service was prompt (working hard for the turnover). The fish was fresh as expected. The combo was surely a good deal. My sashimi was good. I wish sashimi would include only freshly cut raw fish slices. My lunch special plate included a cast of small grilled salmon, minced/seasoned fish and other supporting characters. Sure they were okay and it’s been popular I am sure; still I wish at least salmon sushi instead. My companion loved her tamago sushi but felt the ambience was just typical basic good Japanese restaurant and a bit rushed. I suppose it’s s 4.4 experience. Parking at Honda Plaza is $2 with validation.

I had heard so much about Sushi Gen, and it lived up to its hype regarding the quality of their food. I will state unequivocally that their fish is fabulous! We were a bit turned off by the fact that we had to wait for over 30 minutes outside in the parking lot, despite the fact that we had reservations. Then, the minute we looked like we had eaten the last bit of food on our plates, we were asked to leave to accommodate diners who were waiting for our table. The total time at our table was less than an hour, so we were not inconsiderate table hogs. Sushi Gen definitely knows how to prepare great food. They need to pay more attention to scheduling and keeping their reservations, so they don't have to rush people out the door.

Ok I’ll spill the beans like seemingly countless people before me judging by the line. Yes you might have to wait a while but grin and bear it. Sushi this good doesn’t come along every day. Wether you choose a table to enjoy the more value based menu or the sushi bar for the a la carte only options you will find the options beyond basic and richly satisfying. The fish is particularly fresh, the service spot on and the price commensurate with what you get.

Three of us had a late lunch here on Tuesday. We parked on the street avoiding the Honda Plaza lot parking hassle. The 20 min wait was reasonable (this place always has a queue outside). The inside looks welcoming and comfortable with typical Japanese restaurant motif. This is one busy restaurant! We started with a large bottle of Kirin to share. Our sashimi theme lunch dishes were all delicious. The fresh tasting fish were cut nicely and well presented. For $4 more I chose hamachi only sashimi lunch (versus primarily tuna @ $17 ). The teriyaki chicken portion was generous. The lunch combo came with miso soup (hot and tasty) and warm flavorful tofu. We also ordered sunomono salad and California roll. A lot of good food. Service was attentive; tea refilled promptly without having to ask. The restaurant closed at 2 so we could linger a bit without feeling rushed. An excellent birthday lunch celebration.

Not much of a sushi person but this place may have changed that for me. Yummmm try the tiger roll and the avalanche (think that's the name)

We visited Sushi Gen for dinner tonight after reading lots of good reviews from others. It’s either my expectation was too high or the service & food quality wasn’t good. We had to wait over 40 minutes to be seated. After we sat down it took about 15 minutes to order the drinks. Waitress was very slow and not organised. We had question about different dishes and waitress didn’t have much knowledge. When it comes to food, we were very disappointed with the quality of food. It wasn’t really authentic Japanese food. I have had a lot better Japanese food in other Japanese restaurants in the area, such as Tenno. We didn’t even finish our dinner because we didn’t like it much. I disagree with other good reviews about this restaurant. And probably would not go back again FYI: they charge house Sauvignon Blanc $70 for a half bottle. Definitely overrated.

You will love everything about Sushi Glen, from its fun location to the food and service. Sushi Gen has been around at least 15 years and it always gets better and we have never had a bad meal there. The sushi is fresh, which I like, and the portions are large. From the wonderful rice to the simple California roll, it is all delicious. The service is fast, but you are never rushed. If you want sushi and you are anywhere near Downtown LA, this is a must.

Quality sushi at the sushi bar! I've had salmon sushi, a nice set of 6 spicy tuna rolls, squid sushi, tuna sushi, they were all very fresh and delicious. The thing is you have to ask for the prices to the waitress because it's not on the menu; I'll definitely come back.

I was with a friend for dinner, at first they made us wait inside and then an arrogant waiter made us sit outside the room and wait our turn. We were given the menu without prices and only at my request was I given the full menu with prices. We had dinner at the bar and I have to say the sushi is good. But the real problem is the rudeness of a waiter and the chef who served us at the bar. When we asked for the bill, it seemed to us that the bill was not correct and we asked for clarifications on the final bill ... the Chef who served us, with great rudeness, allowed himself to tell us "pay and go out!" with a sign of the hand, while the waiter with an annoyed air did not deign to greet us. In my opinion, there are better sushis and you will certainly be treated well. I recommend to stay away from this restaurant.

Always great fresh sushi! The line during lunch hour, is worth the eait!, If you dont have reservations.

Our favorite Japanese restaurant in US - we tried NY, DC, SF, but after 30 years, this place is number one in our sushi list (We feel Sushi Gen is better than most sushi restaurants we've tried in Japan) . If you want real sushi, must seat at the counter (Not at the table, Sushi must be eaten right after the chef prepares... not few minutes later... and one or two pieces at a time) Not a big fan of Toro, too fatty for me, but their maguro is one of the best... usually great, but sometimes Awesome - The real blue fin tuna ! (Not yellow fin or bigeye tuna) Uni is always fresh and spicy tuna roll is also our favorite.

Always plan to wait at least 30 mins to be seated. Even the parking lot can be a challenge The sushi lunch special is excellent value

We arrived for lunch on a Wednesday at about 11:30 a.m. There was already a long line and wait for tables, but we were seated immediately at the sushi bar. We ordered and ordered and ordered until we couldn't eat anymore. Everything was exceptional. I'm still dreaming about the albacore.

it is still a safe bet for no worries good sushi and good atmosphere is not totally up to date cool it is a classic

Needed a quick lunch, Sushi Gen was great. The sushi was fresh, the sushi chef was attentive and quick completing all my orders. Great environment for doing business or just going solo. They have accommodations at the bar (quick sitting) or the dining room. I highly recommend.

The food is authentic Japanese, prepared by Japanese chefs. The range is great, fresh and well made, but its not cheap for what it is. There are set menu or a la carte. its with a try.

Incredible quality sushi in a really fun place. We always sit at the sushi bar. They have some really great fish variety to chose from.

I sat at the sushi bar and had 4 kinds of sushi (2 pieces each) and a California roll and nothing but tap water to drink for $50 + tip. Felt a bit steep, but the fish was great and watching them make my sushi and other peoples was worth it.

If you eat a lot of sushi and would like to round out your experience go here for traditional. It's a solid value, always good and on two occasions I've sat next to well known LA sushi chefs having lunch at the bar.

The sushi is amazing--so many choices and the freshest possible. They must buy their fish from the near by fish market. The tempura is good too, but the sushi is to-die-fore.

Great sushi restaurant in little Tokyo. Very busy at lunch so be prepared to wait unless you sit at the sushi bar. Great sushi with nice large servings.

Sushi Gen was recommended to us as the best place for sushi in the downtown area of Los Angeles. We arrived just prior to the 5PM opening and there was already a queue to get a table. Service was prompt and friendly and the restaurant was very clean and quiet. The sushi was outstanding, especially the crab and tuna. I strongly recommend Sushi Gen.

After researching sushi in downtown L.A. for an hour I finally gave up on the fancy “Omakase” (chef’s menu) places and called Sushi Gen to make a reservation (no website to speak of). As soon as I walked in past the crowds I knew I had made the right decision. And, to my surprise, we were seated promptly. Outstanding service all the way around. If you like simple, old school, fresh sushi, Sushi Gen delivers in spades. The night we were there I think we were outnumbered by Japanese, always a good sign. Families dining out. There is a huge sushi bar that I would sit at as a couple or solo. The sake list is good and then we moved on to Sapporo. All the fish was super fresh and the portions were generous. At the end we had Hamachi collar & head. The meat around the collar and cheek is tender and tasty. Wish I lived here.

Nothing to say against the quality of food - it's absolutely fantastic! Fortunately for me I was on my own and didn't have to queue whereas big crowds were waiting at the entry. The only issue is that the sushi list at the bar doesn't have prices... You have no idea what to expect at the end of the meal, and the bill is considerably high: 87$ per person plus tips.

Real Japanese food but a little bit hi on the price like a real Japanese place , also waited a bit outside to be seated there was a line ,If you want real Japanese sushi this is the place

Recently went to this restaurant with a party of 5 in LA for a trade show at the convention center . We had a desire for fine quality sushi and sasimi . We selected sushi can based upon our hotels recommendation and were completely satisified . The food was amazing and the atmosphere was traffic. We shared 5 platters of the deluxe sushi and sashimi which was truly excellent . We then added 10 shrimp tempura . Had some ashes beer and enjoyed a relaxed evening .We all can highly recommend .. Reservations required and be on time

delicious and affordable. the dishes are great and the atmosphere is nice. I went there with my boyfriend and he liked sushi. He usually doesn't :)

Worth the wait. Great, fresh sushi, and other menu items are good too (fried shrimp heads, tempura, miso, etc). The sake selection is awesome but not overwhelming. You will have such a good meal here, I'm jealous in advance that you're going.

We visited the Little Tokyo are of LA and had heard about Sushi Gen and how difficult it was to get into. We stopped by around 6:30p on a Tuesday, and were seated immediately with no reservation. Our server was very helpful explaining the various options, and making suggestions which we took. We were very pleased with the results. The sushi is exceptionally fresh, and although not classically beautiful, it was very tasty. The wine list is limited but acceptable. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food.

if you love sushi this is the place to stay, i love to come here everytime i can, i am one of the thousands followers

People wait so long for this place that I feel the staff has become arrogant. Yes, the sashimi is fresh, and the creations are great, but you can get similar quality at Komasa, without the high prices and crowd. I felt the service was rushed, and some customers looked put out by the wait staff.

My family and I had a great time here. It was my daughters first sushi experience and the server was very helpful with having her choose what to eat. We had a really good green tea ice cream for dessert.

Carry out only, but fresh and delicious as ever with the variety of offerings in it's lunch boxes 🍱 Best Japanese chirashi and sushi carry out lunch ever!

the restaurant its ok, we were expecting a lot more after reading the reviews. Food is ok nothing out of this world.

Was most definitely the best sashmi ever eaten. Little bit of a wait but probably no worse than anywhere else and worth it! Miso soup was spot on as well. Our wait staff was very courteous and accommodating.

this is one of the best Restaurants i've ever been to.. the owner is personally involved in selections, really know what he is doing, is a pleasure to chat with. it's nice not to be in thrall to the chains

One of the best sushi bars in LA--with crowds to support that. If you love sushi, wait to sit at the sushi bar. Portion size is slightly smaller than some, but quality and choice are solid. Sushi at the tables tend not to be quite as good.

One of our favorite sushi destinations! Just about perfect! The fish is fresh, nori is crisp, rice just right! Sushi chefs and staff are friendly and professional- Can't ask for anything more!

Sushi Gen is my goto spot in Little Tokyo. Affordable and fresh! This place is one of Little Tokyo's gems.

The sushi melts in your mouth. I got basics, like an eel roll and spicy tuna and also had a tempura appetizer. The sushi rolls were the best I've ever had, and the tempura was extremely tasty too. I sat at the bar because it was so crowded and enjoyed watching all of the more adventurous types of sushi the woman next to me ordered, including a beautiful quail egg roll with the raw egg in the middle.

This is a sushi/sashimi place you can trust to be fresh and tasty. Despite long lines during lunch (get there no later than 11:00am to line up); the shashim special is the order of 80% of the lunch crowd. The sashimi is fresh and a healthy and tasty portion of the fresh fish catch of the day. The sushi bar (which usually easier than the sitdown is staffed by friendly and helpful sushi makers. No reservations during lunch but there is during the dinner hours.

Very nice. But the parking very tight. Little to none. Off street or paid parking lots.wait time very. Lunch time pack. Dinner time super pack. But worth the wait, and well I'll give it a +4 1/2 stars rating. But not very cheap for lunch or Dinner.

I was craving sushi the other day and our family decided to have dinner here. The sushi was so fresh and delicious. Each piece was like a little work of art! Even though it gets pretty busy, we never felt rushed, and the service was spot on! will definitely come back soon!

Been going here for over 20 years, they have the freshest fish and sushi. Best deal is lunch sushi special, but wait can be long, worth the wait. Frequent diner usually get in line by 10:30 am, waiting for restaurant to open at 11:30 am. Dinner is double the price.

Great place for Sushi and well worth the wait. The fish is delicious and the chefs are very talented. Consistently delicious. Whenever we are in downtown LA we try to visit.

This place is packed for lunch - as someone who works in DTLA, it's hard to escape for a long lunch but have done so a couple of times and Sushi Gen never disappoints. Lunch special is the best $17 you'll spend. Be ready for a long line! Very efficient once you are in, pretty fast.

It's a very popular and busy restaurant. The host is organized and polite. He even apologized for the delay since we were seated after our reservation time. There's always a crowd outside waiting so come with your patience. The sashimi was fresh. The steamed egg was delicious and tempura was lightly battered. This is not the type of restaurant that makes fusion sushi rolls, so come for their sashimi.

After living in Japan for 1 year and Hawaii for 2 years, it was difficult to find satisfactory sushi/sashimi, let alone quality grade fish. But after enjoying Sushi Gen several times this place is the real deal. Best Sashimi and Sushi in a relaxed authentic atmosphere for lunch or dinner. Freshest and finest raw fish you will find anywhere in the US. Unless you would like to travel to Japan. I recommend this restaurant as a five star cuisine for sashimi!

This place is very authentic, not a snobby Beverly Hills Japanese restaurant at all. Prices are moderate. We paid 155USD with tip in total for 2 person. about 74 dollars per person. But the quality of the fish we had was amazing. Also we had a 300ml moderately priced Sake and it was soo balanced, highly recommend it, name is Tsukiyo Tokubetsu Honjozo Sake. The bar and table menus are different. You don't wait to be seated for the bar. If there is availability you are seated directly. We were just passing by with my moped and saw the place on the way back home. I remembered the Sushi Gen name and remembered that it had good reviews. I asked if they had a place for us and we were seated immediately at the bar with no wait. It was around 8.30pm. The sushis come in 2 pieces and are served as nigiris instead of rolls. We ordered Sea urchin, geoduck, abalone, oyster, yellowtail belly, hirame, engawa, monkfish liver, tuna, salmon, albacore, scallop and surf clam.

Situated in LA's Little Tokyo in the Honda Plaza, Sushi-Gen serves traditional Japanese cuisine. Its contemporary, yet casual setting features a sushi bar where guests can watch the artful chefs prepare their meals. Guests can start with an appetizer of steamed eggs, monkfish liver or a giant clam special at Sushi-Gen. A main course of sautéed sole, chicken teriyaki or uni dinner will satisfy the taste buds.

Remarkably fresh, skillfully prepared sushi. Clean, traditional, delicious - none of the silly stuff - just straightforward quality. Their cooked dishes are also masterfully prepared. You will be delighted - no matter what you order. I'm also amazed at their ability to move crowds through the restaurant. Sometimes the wait can be a little long - but the experience is worth it!

High quality fish cut perfectly served efficiently. Great value. Don’t be surprised if you find your favorite LA sushi chef sitting at the bar. No frills or fussy fusion. Is 5 orders of chutoro excessive for two people? Everything was amazing.

A nice sushi place in little Tokyo. We can around 11.30 and had to wait for a table for 40 minutes. The place was very busy. However, 1-2 people can find a spot faster by the bar. Food quality is very good. Service nothing is special but fast. Seven sushi chefs work all the time. Prices are quite reasonable for sushi.

Wow! Was staying across the street at the Miyako. Did the Yelp dance and wandered around the block to check out the many options there in Little Tokyo. Settled on Sushi Gen. Ordered a roll, at $15 I thought at first was pricey but it was huge, maybe 15 pieces, and several orders of nigiri. Roll was great but the real surprise was how fantastic each piece of nigiri was. My new standard for what sushi should be like. How I imagine it must be in Japan. Still thinking about it weeks later makes me frustrated i've yet to find it's equivalent here in San Francisco. And judging from the clientele it's no secret in LA this place is great.

This famous sushi haunt lives up to its long-standing reputations for being one of Los Angeles best freshest Japanese restaurants. The service is fun and fast once you have been seated.

Thank god for this old school gem. It's been in L.A. nearly as long as I have, and remains one of the best traditional sushi bars in the city. Little Tokyo has many, and many are average at best. There are lines in front at opening time for a reason. It's very, very good.

My sister suggested this place and it was well worth it! Fish was smooth and tasty and very fresh. Eel, Spanish mackerel and even the albacore was very very good. We’ve been to many sushi places and this is on top. A huge line at 5pm to get in but worth the wait. Lots of other places around and lots to see and do in the area. Not cheap by any means so expect to pay a bit. Enjoy!

What can I say? I've been eating at Sushi Gen forever. It's a real LA classic. Even though there are tons of other sushi restaurants around, this one always tops my list. What's also great is that it's right in the heart of Little Tokyo, where I lived in the early 80's when Downtown LA was in the first throws of becoming hip. Now DTLA bustling with trendy eateries that come and go in the blink of an eye. So, the sheer fact that Sushi Gen is still around and still going strong says a lot in this fickle town. It's also filled with local Japanese, another sign that this is a great spot. They don't take reservations, but it's worth the wait and the lines moves fast. Everyone has her personal favs: mine are the scallop roll, the maguro, and the amaebi. They melt in your mouth like butter!

This place has been around forever. Located in a strip mall in downtown Little Tokyo. Old style LA sushi. Very fresh fish and sushi never changes.

Me and my husband were searching for an original japanese sushi restaurant to eat and this is definitely the place...our sushi barista' s name was Kazu and he was very friendly, service was fast and place was clean.

Great sushi. This is a wonderful place for lunch. It gets very crowded so you should arrive early to avoid a long wait.

I love this sushi place. Their fish is so fresh. Its gets really busy during lunch but they are very efficient.

It was good, not as great as expected. Service was a bit lacking. The Menu selection was excellent and the prepared food was good.

The best sushi I ever had I’m my life Everything was so fresh and delicious My girls and I had amazing time Fun place
Great restaurant in an unassuming location
This sushi restaurant was highly recommended to us by a friend who lives in the area as being someplace that's well worth the long wait. We got here right as the dinner period was picking up and put ourselves on the wait list, and ended up waiting almost an hour in the parking lot. However, once our table was ready - wow! The sushi was some of the freshest and most delicious that we've ever had. We shared the plum roll, salmon belly, and tuna roll, as well as a beef teriyaki, and everything was utterly fantastic. The staff were super professional and polite, and the food came out in good time, which is a sign that they took great pains to serve food that was both delicious and aesthetically pleasing. The restaurant itself is pretty small, which might account for part of the long wait - this place can only accommodate so many people.
