If ambience is important, probably not where you want to be. First impression made me want to change my mind. It's hold, needs aim updating for sure. đ The server was super sweet and courteous and the food was surprisingly good. Merlot was rancid and the sushi came at the same time as our entrees, which was after a very considerable wait. We did not sit in the hibachi area, sat in the front dining area next to the sushi counter, so I can say for sure those guys were NOT busy. A few days in Austin and SO many places to eat, I'm sad this was a $40 meal for one person- sushi, chicken and saki đłđłđłđł

This was the worst sushi/sashimi have had in austin. So bad i need ginger to choke it down. the bad part about that was that the ginger tasted like bleach and when I commented, the manager? came to my table and lectured me, telling me I knew nothing about sushi. this review is being written by someone with over 20 years in the restaurant industry in the Pacific Northwest. (I think I know a little about quality sushi.) Not reccomended

very quiet. Waitress was very helpful with explaining menu items. A bit pricy but food was excellent.

The hotel has excellent variety of sushi. They are very filling and yummy. A must visit when you are in Austin.

This restaurant has great happy hour specials from 4-7 pm. Sushi rolls run $4-8. They have a nice selection and they are well made. Drink specials such as hot sake and sake bombs and dessert too. We explained that we had a concert to get to and needed to be done at a certain time. Staff was very accommodating and helpful. Full menu of Japanese specialities available beyond sushi too. Decor was pleasant.

This is our first time to try this restaurant. The Japanese hibachi close by our home have closed for business but we are sure glad we found this one.

We had a group of 4 and chose to sit at a table instead of the grill to avoid the 25 minute wait for the grill. We ended up waiting just as long for the server to come around each time. He either got lost in the restaurant, which was not busy at all, or forgot he had us because we had another server start asking if we needed anything. By the end time we got our food it was luke warm and wasnât even that good. It wasnât worth the price we paid. We will not be going back to this place ever again.

Decided to check out this place yesterday for lunch since itâs next door to our hotel The place is very clean including the restrooms Our server was very friendly and helpful with menu items Our food arrived timely and fresh All was excellent Itâs a little pricy but you get what you pay for If in the area again we will for sure stop in again

My husband and I frequently visit Sushi Japon. Their sushi is pretty good (our favorite roll is called the "misha") but their service is outstanding. The waitresses recognize us and give us 15% off each visit. We've never tried the Habachi grill but I can tell you their sushi is unique and tasty.

This was a great place for dinner, we has Sushi, and soup and it was great, a must place to eat

The sushi here was excellent! The waitress (which was an absolute doll) helped us order. We told her we weren't sure what to order, but that we wanted to try something new. She recommended a couple rolls based on what we liked and what customers ate there regularly. We had the *Crunchy Dragon, The Sweetheart and the Shaggy Dog. The sweetheart roll was delicious and not at all what we would normally order, she recommended this roll as our 'something new' and we LOVED it. You have to try it!!

Great food and quick service! And they gave our son a great dessert, complete with singing! Thanks for making it a special night!!

If you looking for good authentic Japanese food, this is not the place. Food is ok, as well as service. I tried sushi rolls and sashimi. Not impressed.

I ordered the hibachi beef lunch special. Was very good. Had the steamed pork dumplings. They were good. Sushi was very fresh. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Overall experience was very good.

Sushi Japon is next door to the Drury Inn where we were staying. We walked over, was seated by a courteous greeter and had some very good sushi.

DON'T DINE HERE: The food is dry and service is SLOW. We brought a group of 21 people from the office to this restaurant. Our reservation was for 1:30. It was 2:00 when orders were taken, and 2:30 when the chefs came out to cook the meals for two of our three tables. No chef came to the third table until almost 3:30. They sat for 2 hours without being served! This was a company event for us and we spent nearly $600, so we weren't very pleased with this type of service. I asked for a manager and was told he was on vacation. I spoke with the person in charge and he said that a chef called in that day. Never did they apologize, nor did they explain this to us when we arrived. It would've been better if they'd just had the two chefs prepare all of the meals instead of making 7 people watch as the other two tables were served. I asked to have a manager call me and gave him my business card. No one has called. I called last week for a manager and was told again he was not available. I find this to be unacceptable service, and will never return.

The food was sooo delicious and sooo beautifuly placed. Tempura was beyond words. You HAVE to try the lemon đ smash drinks đč

When in Austin, Texas be sure to check out Sushi Japon & Habachi Grill! This was an excellent Japanese Habachi restaurant and Sushi Bar. The food was excellent! I had the Habachi Steak ( because real Cowboys donât eat Sushi :) ). The fried rice was awesome! I finished it off with some Japanese ice cream. This restaurant is right off Interstate 35 in north Austin and very easy to get to. Two thumbs up for Sushi Japon!

Been here with a colleague who loves sushi, since it was my first sushi restaurant experience I wanted to order something small,so order 2 piece smoked salmon,it was really good, salmon was soft and the wasabi, soya sauce mixture was spicy. As a main course I order teppanyaki chicken. Some how I did not like the chicken as it was hard and taste was also not that great as compared to my previous live teppanyaki chicken in Taiwan.

This spot is good for Happy Hour. However, on a second visit for dinner we discovered a different place. Service was slow to non-existent. And, for dinner the raw fish was substandard. Other dishes were served cold because the service was so slow. It was hard to enjoy a place which had such low self-esteem. The menu and Happy Hour fare tends to rely too much on fried items.

I walked here as it was just a short walk from the double tree up the road where I was staying. The service was very efficient and friendly, and the sushi was above average. I would recommend this place for sure if in the area.

This is a quiet, informal sushi bar. It's clean, has a separate bar and good seating. The service is good. I had an Austin roll which I really enjoyed, but the other rolls I ordered were pretty pedestrian. Had the house sake, which is advertised at 375ml, but is probably closer to 250ml. It was pleasantly warm and had a good flavor. If I go again I will only order rolls off the chef's menu.

Got in just before closing, no rushing me in and out, only asked me to complete my order before closing time. Had great conversation with staff and enjoyed the meal very much. I thought price to quality and quantity was reasonable.

Really good Japanese Cuisine at Family friendly prices! Their Lunch special cant be beat all include: soup , egg roll and choice of rice! Happy hour offered great cocktail prices and smaller portions of the tasty sushi and appetizer selections. Dinner is a blast with offerings from steak to sea food.

It was near our hotel so we decided to try it for dinner. Unfortunately, it was mediocre at best. The Chef special sushi was good but the other sushi menu was poor quality and just sad. The miso soup was not hot and the service was terrible. It wasnât worth our time, money, or appetite.

I always come to this restaurant when I travel to Austin for work. Super friendly folks...even when you come in right before they close. Authentic great food and a good price for sushi. Get the Hirame (Halibut) Nigiri as it is always awesome here.

This restaurant lost my reservation and then proceeded to blame me for being late despite calling ahead with hostess that we were running 15min late. They wouldnât even talk to us until after we were at the restaurant waiting in a line to be seated for 10min and then said they gave our table because we were late. Have never met a restaurant and staff behave this way and completely ruined my childâs birthday. We ended up going to Kobe which was better atmosphere and food. Donât waste your time at this non authentic joint that doesnât care about their commitment. Never will I come here again and will ensure no other in my network does the same.

We come to Austin 2-3 times a year to visit the grandkids and are always looking for good places to eat for the kids and the adults. Weâve established many staples for eating out but nothing has satisfied the palates of all while also reasonably pricedâat least not until we found Sushi Japon and Hibachi Grill. Like most hibachi grills, the experience lies with the food and the performance of the chef. We were not disappointed. For the 4 yo., the 11 yo., the 45 yo., the 59 yo., and the 71 yo. of our party, everyone was completely rapt. Full of laughter and applause the entertainment was surprised only by the quality ans flavor of the food. Yummy and plentiful. Three weeks later we are still laughing about the location of our chefâs hibachi training. When asked, we were informed that he learned his knife skills in âSan Antokyo!â For a fun time and a good meal that does not break the budget, Sushi Japon & Hibachi Grill is the place.

I was suprised at the quality of the food here and the service. Just too bad that I kept going back on a sunday to find it was closed :-( maybe next time.

This place is good to enjoy with friends. I can only give it three stars, since the food was very greasy (egg rolls), the portion of the food was okay and they donât have variety in desserts. If you are looking for a place to have fun with friend and family, I recommend this place. If you are very demanding with food, look for other options!

I decided to go to the Sushi Japon because I was staying at the nearby DoubleTree hotel and could walk to the restaurant in a few minutes. I do not know much about Japanese food so find it hard to evaluate quality. The restaurant looks a little kitschy, I think they could do a better job of making it seem more Japanese. I came at around 7:30, and there were only a few people in the place. I was shown to a table. The server was very nice, and efficient. Although my server was evidently Japanese it appeared that everyone else, including the chefs prepping food, were Hispanic. While there's hardly a requirement about ethnicity, in my experience for many types of cooking the greatest authenticity and success comes with cooks that are immersed in that tradition all their lives. I did find that a little weird, but maybe that's the way they roll in Texas. I ordered an Asahi beer ($4.50) and landed on a regular sushi plate ($19.95) which give you a variety of sushi pieces and a tuna roll. A bowl of miso soup starts the meal. The sushi plate followed a few minutes later. I enjoyed it, and thought it was quite good - tasty and also filling. But again I have only limited experience and find it hard to say with confidence how good it really is. So what I can say is that I liked it. It would be worthwhile to go with someone who really knows Japanese cuisine and see what they think. I finished with a serving of green tea ice cream ($2.75) . This is a rather generous amount for the price, and was a nice way to finish off the meal (an even nicer one is green tea crÚme brûlée, but Sushi Japon does not have it on the menu. Just saying.) I notice that there are a significant number of critical or low-scoring reviews of Sushi Japon. Overall, I think it was a good meal, for me.

I understand that this place is under new management. They stuck a menu on my door which is what put it on my radar. When I went, the place was empty which isn't a good sign, usually. But if they're just getting started, well you have to start somewhere. I had both hot food and sushi and both were excellent. I've been planning on finding a sushi place close to my home and I think I've done it. I hope they catch on and become successful.

We went for lunch, where I ordered the sushi plate with 6 pieces of nigiri sushi and 3 pieces of california roll. I was told they were out of toro and encouraged to order "hamachi toro", which I assumed was the belly piece of the hamachi, for $9. I was told that this hamachi toro was to hamachi as toro is to regular tuna, so I decided to give it a try. My companion ordered the shrimp tempura bento box. At first sight, I was struck by the tiny size of the pieces of sushi. I mean, grocery store nigiri and California rolls would dwarf these. I was also disappointed that they included fake crab and overcooked shrimp as two of the nigiri. Anyway, the sushi rice was fine, but none of the fish tasted really good. The maguro tuna was the best. The so-called hamachi toro was nothing like toro. It was extremely firm and a little bit oily where toro is soft and tender and spreads around the mouth as you eat it. It would have been ok for $2.50 a piece, but not $9 for two, especially given the tiny pieces. The bento was ok, with two pieces of tempura shrimp and five or six of tempura vegetable. There's really no point in dining at Sushi Japon except for the staff. The people who work here seem really warm. On the other hand, when the waitress asked me how I liked the hamachi toro after I'd eaten one of the two pieces and I told her I was very disappointed, she did not offer to take the remaining piece back and not charge me.

Must start by saying, I came for my friends to have Sushi. I do not eat or like Sushi. I do, however, love Japanese food. I had fried rice and it was unbelievably fantastic!! My friends all had Sushi and all really enjoyed it, there was even one I liked... Would go again.

We ate at the sushi bar and the sushi man even asked us if there was any fish that we did not like. We had ordered chirachi, which normally has whatever the sushi man wants to use, and so we really appreciated being asked if there was someone that we disliked. The chirachi bowl was beautifully presented, had a ton of fish and the rice was delicious. We also had a tempura appetizer, which was great. While we were eating, we would ask the sushi man what he was making, because so many of them were beautiful presentations. He gave us pieces of the sushi to try - all delicious. The outside of the restaurant is a bit "worn" but don't let that put you off. The sushi is great.

The waitstaff was very polite and if it weren't for them, we would have been much more disappointed. The food was OK... not that good, and my stomach felt horrible the whole rest of the night. We had the hibachi. I'd definitely recommend trying a different place if you are going for Hibachi. We didn't try their sushi.

I ate here today and loved it! Sushi was fresh and delicious, the miso soup đ was hot and good! I will visit again.

Happy Hour 4-7 every day - $2 Kirin beer, $4 rolls, $8 specialty rolls. $3 appetizers. Nice place, great service. We got: Crab puffs - not bad, fake crab, I'd skip it next time. Tempura shrimp and veggies were a much better deal - larger portion, done well, not greasy at all. Sushi was pretty typical - tasted fresh, came out quick even at 6:30 pm on a Saturday night. Shaggy dog roll was the tastiest I tried.

My wife and I ate here twice on a recent business trip held in a nearby hotel. We went for dinner during their happy hour and were very pleased with the quality of the food and especially the great prices. They offered $2 draft beers and very reasonable prices on their most popular rolls. ($4 & $8) We ended up ordering several more rolls than we would normally have done because of the great prices. The staff were all very friendly and engaging and when we let them know we were not in a hurry, they let us sit and enjoy the evening. We would definitely eat here again on a future trip to the area.

A small restruarnt. Excellent sushi. Very well don. Excellent quality. Requests for special touches completed well

Very fresh and delicious. Wide selection of Sushi to choose from. They will customize it to be spicier and hotter upon request. Service was very good and staff is friendly.

We have both dined in and ordered from Uber Eats from Sushi Japon. While the restaurant is conveniently located, the food and service has been subpar comparing to other sushi places in Austin. While the fish is fresh, the portion is always small. The miso soup borderlines tasteless and the chicken katsu is dry and mushy. If you like Japanese food, there are a lot of other restaurant that are better in town. While price is right and parking is aplenty, the food and the service is not on par with others..

I tried the happy hour and they have pretty good specials. The tuna nigiri and the rolls was pretty good. Service was fantastic. Prices are ok but the happy hour specials are very fairly priced

Went here for my birthday weekend and I had a great time. The food was great and we had a great server and cook. I had the steak and chicken with fried rice. They use good fresh ingredients and they put on a show while you wait for your food. The wait can be tricky so you have to call or wait until they have a chair open.

The chef we had was a lot of fun and the kids loved him. Food is always very good and Hibachi grill faultless.
Interesting change of pace
I knew what sushi was, but I'd never had it. I recommend if you've never seen it prepared to get a seat at the bar. It was enjoyable just for the show. It was a bit pricier than I thought, but it still tasted good.
