understated great place!

By MovinMovin |

very unassuming, so many may pass. It has a very fresh sushi selection, plus some Korean and other fare. MIso is meh, but otherwise portions are good, and the happy hour prices are great, AND they go til 7 pm. Worth a try. We like it!

Yum!

Really enjoyed Sushi Kanpai, only a short walk from our Sorrento Hotel where we were staying. Quality of sushi was very good and creative.

Great little sushi joint

By SeattleMan |

I have eaten here many times. The sushi is quite good, reliably so. The service is variable, from friendly to indifferent.

Great find

By franthecat2013 |

Our family of 10 had dinner here during happy hour,4-7pm, where the food is discounted but not the drinks. We wanted to eat nearby/walking distance from our hotel and found this place on Yelp. The fish was very fresh and the Uni special was simply fabulous. Everything was wonderful including the fresh udon noodles. We would definitely return when we return to this area. For a party if 10 with two drinks each the tab with tip was $300 which was a bargain. Service was quick and the food came out quickly which surprised our entire party.

Quick meal

Not extraordinary. Fresh sushi service good presentation. Personally would not return. Not because of bad food, but so many better options

Highly Recommended!

My wife, two young children, and I went into this establishment on an early Saturday afternoon. It didn't seem like a good place for young children (one 4 yrs old and the other 6 mos. old), but they had a high chair and seemed very hospitable. The sushi may not have looked perfect, but it was the best tasting sushi my wife and I had ever had. Also, the saki and beer were both very resonably priced, and they had a nice selection. I would HIGHLY recommend this resturant to anyone that is looking for sushi or just a nice place a socialize.

Reliable, reasonable prices

By SeattleDoc2010 |

Frequent this place as it is close to first hill. Not fine dining but good reliable sushi at a reasonable price. It can get busy for lunch but usually you can get table quickly.

downtown sushi

By Martha_in_BC |

Very nice small Japanese restaurant with good sushi. Good selection of sake too. Closes early so get there by 8pm. Terrific value for cost--had dinner there recently with 4 friends and total bill was under $100, including a carafe of sake. Convenient location downtown near several hotels.

Enjoyable food, friendly service.

Great bento boxes for lunch, and very decent sushi. Pleasant decor. Generally worth the visit.

Clean, Friendly, Tasty, Relaxing (and nice jazz music as a bonus)!

By JoInTexas |

Hubby and I had a late lunch here and got Happy Hour pricing (check out photo). The ver fresh tuna sashimi was sliced to just the right thickness, the shrimp tempura roll served with warm shrimp (delightful!) and excuse me...I gotta order more! Go here if you are staying at Rennasaisance as it is a super short walk across the freeway bridge.

Nice Find on First Hill

By IndigoB |

Hit the "Happy Hour" on a weekday (nice extended Happy Hour until 7), had some nice rolls, very reasonable with good value. Nice attentive service. Not at the level of Seattle's best like Umi and Shiro's (both Belltown) but very much worth considering if you're on First Hill or staying at or visiting the South part of Downtown.

LOVED this place!

By Charlene P |

We were visiting Seattle for the first time and asked the concierge for a decent restaurant within walking distance to our hotel (Renaissance). We had our 2 teenage sons with us. The ambience was super cool....the tables felt very "private" the way the restaurant was set up. Decor was very nice....GREAT service and the food was delicious. We went on a Sunday evening and they still honored the "happy hour" pricing. Even their regular menu prices were very reasonable. Had a wide selection and we were thrilled! Try the "volcano rolls" - the best we've ever had!

Wonderful

By lovingsonoma |

I came here with a group of 12 last night. We arrived at 5:30 which want we were able to take advantage of the happy hour menu. OMG it was so good. Service was great. Sushi was fresh. They note on their menu that they don't like to split bills but they were wonderful with us about it. I can't wait to go back!

Nice hidden gem

By DaffodilBlush |

Away from the crowd, in a nice neighborhood with available parking, sits a rare hidden gem. Enjoy generous slices of sashimi, fresh from the market place. Dine during the happy hour on weekends, from 4pm to closing, and your stomach and wallet will be well rewarded. From traditional California rolls to spicy hamachi rolls, from warm crispy croquette to juicy vegetarian gyoza, and plates upon plates of sashimi, we have plenty to devour and be delighted. Don't hesitate, just head over to Kanpai!

Kanpai--worth a visit!

By JaniceWa |

Really good seafood dishes and the most beautiful sushi I have ever seen. Very pretty restaurant.

Yummy sushi - reasonable prices

By Mountainlizzie |

Found this place within walking distance of hotel. Good prices especially during happy hour which includes beverages as well as some food selections. Pass on the edamame as it seemed over microwaved. But the fish was tasty and nice sized portions. As was the generous wine pour for happ hour price. All in all good dinner at a good value!

Welcoming and Warm- Sushi & Wine Bar

By Justin M |

Escape the concrete jungle and walk into the most welcoming sushi bar in Seattle, WA.. Great food! Great service! A++++

Fantastic Japanese Food

By Marlin M |

Our concierge recommended this as close walking distance sushi restaurant with great food. Did it deliver! I love Japanese cuisine but this was amazing. So if you are nearby don't think twice. The sashimi was perfect, the service was extraordinary, the portions generous and the cost very low in proportion to the value!! I will make it a point to visit again! Thankyou James @ Renaissance! Great recommendation.

Good value

By KikiMira |

We got the happy hour prices which made the value better. The food was great!

My adult son and I came here with friends who live nearby

By Ronald S |

Our senior friends live in Skyline nearby. We came from the Eastside to eat with them. First time there. Many Skyline residents were dining. It was our first time there but recommended by our friends because of the proximity to their place. They had not ate there either before. We started with draft beer and Otokoyama sake. We chose some chicken teriyaki, beef Udon, an obento box with many items and Okamase sushi. Good variety and perfect balance for three seniors and a young adult. I wish I took photos which I normally do but we wanted to enjoy each other. Very good food and service.

Don't waste your time or money here

By B00tpacker |

It was quite possibly the worst Japanese food I've ever had. The miso soup was bland (the waitress forgot to bring it to begin with), the vegetable tempura were variable (some undercooked while others ok, the California roll was disgusting (and I don't use that term lightly). And they didn't give any stir fried vegetables as the menu had indicated to come with in all bento boxes. When I pointed it out to the waitresses, they still wouldn't correct the mistake, and insisted that my order should not include stir fried vegetables, in spite of the menu. Terrible food with awful service, this restaurant is not worth your time or money.

Mixed. Great Appetizers, Poor Sushi

By Semibum |

We visited on a Sunday evening and were greeted with an all-evening happy hour with very attractive pricing. The calamari appetizer was truly excellent and the gyoza very good. Then came the sushi. The first danger sign was that our order arrived so quickly that one had to wonder whether it had been prepared ahead of time. The tuna in the spicy tuna roll was a finely ground tuna colored paste that looked and tasted like something from a tube. And then there was the after-kick. Not just spicy but downright incendiary. Maybe we would have had better luck with the nigiri or by ordering from the higher priced regular menu, but I doubt we will be back to try it. The happy hour was a decidedly mixed experience - at best.

Great neighborhood sushi spot!

By Laura D |

This little spot offers the freshest seaweed sals ive had in a long time! We went during happy hour and ordered a variety of rolls, seaweed salad and baked mussels. A perfect meal. Restaurant is quaint and spotlessly clean, wait staff very attentive, and this is my new fav go-to sushi spot :)

Sashimi is amazing.....everything else not so great

By Guide824584 |

I have ordered the 30 piece sashimi platter 4 times now.....it is spectacular - high quality, super fresh, and don't feel ripped off at all for price to what you receive. Have not been impressed with the sushi roles and the tempura options are a rip off. Just stick with sashimi

Sushi Kanpai (Seattle)

Great service, excellent food, great prices during happy hour, and nice decor.

Really Nice Neighborhood Restaurant

By caplow |

Sunday evening Happy Hour until closing provides a wide range of fun food at very reasonable prices. I'm not into real fish, and there was plenty to order. Tofu was perfectly spiced, no grease and tasty.

Very Fresh & Great Service

Enjoyed the food & atmosphere. Service was Great and Very Nice. Price was reasonable for the freshness and the huge choices. Definitely a repeat when in town.

Very Nice Lunch Getaway

By Molly074 |

I found this restaurant when I had an appointment at the Poly Clinic. It's just up the hill. The decor is beautiful, very clean, a little dark, and calming. It's a quiet and relaxing place to go for lunch--and of course the sushi is melt-in-your mouth fresh and savory. Great lunch specials. It's a short walk from the International District, King Street Station, King County offices, the Columbia Tower, etc., area. It's easy to find because it is located between St. James Cathedral and the new Poly Clinic building. They have 2-, 4-, and 6-person tables, and one long table for a group (maybe 8 - 10 people). More than that and I'd probably go somewhere else as it doesn't seem they are set up to handle lunchtime crowds. I'll definitely be back a lot now that I've found this little gem.

A sweet surprise!

By SeattleMan |

Fresh fare, quick service, and a friendly ambience make Sushi Kanpai one of our favorite sushi stops, for lunch or dinner. The sushi and sashimi are routinely excellent, the luncheon dishes reliably tasty and satisfying, and the prices are fair - including a generous tip for excellent service!

Great atmosphere, great sushi, especially during happy hour

By Lauren T |

I always love sushi places and this one was great. Very reasonably priced. The eel roll was delicious :)

Very fresh and great happy hour prices

By Melissa M |

We've eaten here twice on this trip and were very happy with the service and the food. My favorite is the Seared Salmon Roll!

Top Notch

By Tripper60878 |

We have had many excellent dinners here. Sushi is very fresh with imaginative servings. Great location near Town Hall.

Nice restaurant, reasonable prices.

By Jeffrey R |

Glad I came here. If you like hot, try the "hot nights" sushi roll. Each piece is topped with a thin slice of jalapeƱo. Salad is quite good too. Someone at our table also had a "heart attack," which is also pretty spicy. Nice atmosphere. Very friendly and efficient staff.

Simply one of the best in Seattle

By ViajeroItinerante |

Daily fresh sushi, happy hour prices until 7pm, very friendly staff, and serves larger portions than most restaurants.

Delicious sushi on First Hill - a Happy Hour delight.

By turtlebeachclub |

Stopped in for early dinner while visiting on First Hill. Happy Hour prices on meals and drinks - fabulous Spicy Chicken Teriyaki; delicious California rolls and large, fresh portions of sushi and Sashimi. Tastefully decorated, warm and attentive service. So good we went back again the next day. Will return!

Great location for an excellent sushi experience

By CurtKwak |

Conveniently located on 8th avenue in Seattle, Sushi Kanpai serves solid lunch combination bentos, coupled with innovative rolls & excellent Sushi. There are other excellent Sushi places in the city, but the value you get from Kanpai can't be beat. Try their "Alaskan" roll. It's one of their best rolls.

Fresh and Delicious Sushi

Cute little neighborhood sushi restaurant. Delicious food and really nice staff.

Excellent sushi!

By JupiterCherry |

I think this is some of the best sushi in Seattle, and I formed that opinion coming off of a trip to Japan! The quality of the food is always very good. They have a huge menu, but I mostly have been there for happy hour when the prices are fantastic, both for food and drinks. They have a plum wine that is just to die for... Every once in a while, if it's crowded, the service really suffers. But usually when I go for sushi, I'm not in a rush anyhow so I don't mind. I'd advise going at non-peak times though, to ensure that service is paced the way you prefer.

Fresh and delicious

By Heidi C |

We like to eat sushi every time we are on the coast. This place is one of our favorites in Seattle. It's small and filled with mostly locals. The food is very fresh and the menu is huge- full of creative sushi masterpieces. They also have a large selection of sake.

Great dinner, meh on lunch

By AmiePetite |

Sushi Kanpai has been a favorite of mine for it's convenience, happy hour, and quality. You'll find sushi staples such as philly and cali rolls, tempura, etc but you'll also find a few Seattle themed rolls and my favorite: the paradise roll. The ambiance is casual and quiet, they have a bar to sit at if you're on your own and they don't mind if you sit and read while you eat. The music is variations on pop music but I've never noticed it being too obnoxious. I've tried lunch there a few times but my favorites for dinner aren't so great at lunch. My personal thought is that they receive fresh fish in the afternoon, after lunch but before dinner, so the next day it's kind of... not as clean tasting. But if you grab a tempura box with miso and seaweed salad it's perfectly fine. Overall great, easy, tasty, and I'll be back.

Absolutely Wonderful Experience

By SPTrav |

Sushi Kanpai is a neighborhood restaurant within walking distance of many of the downtown hotels. While in Seattle, we seek sushi and sashimi and this restaurant exceeded all of our expectations. The fish was very fresh and its presentation was excellent. The service was friendly and first class. The decor was very attractive. We were there during happy hour which made this restaurant the best value in Seattle. The premium sake offering (Genbei San No Ono Koroshio) was addictive.

Great sushi for a reasonable price

By JKJK39051 |

This was my first time trying sushi, and the chef took great pains to get us a wonderful variety. The salad was also amazing. Get there for happy hour; you won't be sorry.

Mesmerizing experience

Atmosphere is great and the sushi is fresh and taste great. Brand new sushi eater since relocating to Seattle and have tried others none compare by far!

Five Star Gem Tucked Away

By Pizzaexplorer |

This is a neighborhood find. This is tucked back across the highway, down a side street and it was a lucky find for us. We were looking for something close to our hotel on our last night before heading back home and we found this place. Definitely search them out and if your driving, there is adequate parking around. The service was great but the food was greater! The real deal all around. Fresh, we presented and in a timely manner. Sushi selection and the Sake selection were amazing. I had the Bi Bim with a side of Gyoza and my wife had the sushi and wine, we were not disappointed, very delicious. They also had a Karage Chicken that was out of this world. I would recommend it and I will go back when in town!

always outstanding!

Small restaurant with excellent sushi and Japanese food. Happy hour offers discounts on entrees--must also order a drink. Many regulars from the neighborhood dine here--minimal street parking but public garage nearby.
