The sushi is amazing and prepared beautifully by Mr. Miyagi. You can tell he takes pride in what he does, it appears as art on a plate. The fried tofu appetizer was unbelievable! A must try even if you don't like tofu!. We will be back to eat at this amazing mom and pop sushi bar.

This is my 3rd time in Miyagi. Beware of their new hours. Close on Sundays and Mondays. Close @ 7pm. Must go by 5pm. I showed up by 5:20pm and had to wait till 6pm to get our food. It is quite a chore to eat there as you must go early and allow plenty of time, but after eating here, I have no desire to eat anywhere else. The fish is fresh and the dishes are very well executed. Don't remember the names of the dishes, but my favorites are: sushi wrapped in picked radish, with raw squid, with sweet potato tempura, and spider roll. The volcano bowl is also very good. Something different. Figure spending about $30+pp (without drinks) Super reasonable considering the superb quality. He could easily expend his business, but I have a feeling he wants to be in complete control, hence he is running between sushi counter and kitchen, doing EVERYTHING himself. Wife is the lone waitress. Kind of strange, but that's the way they do business.

My wife and I eat at Sushi Miyagi at least once a week. We are admitted sushi. /sashimi snobs, eating it around the world. Only Singapore and Japan can rival the taste and quality but at many times the price. Tried all other sushi houses in Houston but they are like overpriced amateurs. Mr. Miyagi travels to the fish market early every morning to hand pick the day's fare instead of relying on distributors or FedEx. The cooked food is also a hit. Many choices, large portions, reasonably priced, and quick. Enjoy the slow pace, make new friends while waiting, and enjoy.

The Sushi rolls were well prepared by chefs who obviously knew their craft. There are many delicious looking menu items with a great variety of sushi, etc and also many other dishes.

first this is a tiny place and the tables do not turn. if the tables are filled try again later. the food is unbelievable. we have been many times and our only disappointments are when we arrive to find it closed.

Have been five or six times in the last few years. Don't go expecting refined service or location, but go for very good traditional sushi, usually very consistent. Expect a long wait. Much better than most other sushi places in town (there are so many bad ones I don't know where to start from... the only two I patronize are Sushi Jin and Sushi Miyagi, the latter being my favorite)

We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel so went along. We were a bit worried about it when we pulled up as it looks pretty dodgy from the outside but as soon as you step inside your worries are gone. The place was pretty full for a weeknight dinner. The sushi was soooo good. The sake was also very nice. Definitely worth the visit!

This is my new go-to sushi place on the west side. The food is always good, not inexpensive, but good sushi is. Husband ans wife team manage the place themselves. about 8 tables in the restaurant so get there when it opens for a treat. Miso soup, hot and iced green tea. Lunch for 2 $40 w tip

After reading the best sushi place in Houston published by Houston press, i was curious how this place ends up to be in #1 (vs my personal favorite - Sasaki, who doesnt even make it in the list) so we finally tried this restaurant. We went on a Friday night and got there around 7:30. There was a long line of people to be seated plus people already seated whose order hasnt been taken. There is only one server that also takes care of seating guests and cleaning the table. Its a 2 man show, one chef and a server (whom i was informed was the wife). The wait was long but the fish quality was just great! Plus its a small place so you can see the chef makes the sushi in rhythm with the jazz music he plays. Pretty cool. We ordered different sushi (tuna, mackarel, salmon, red snapper, yellow tail) and they were all excellent! Taste or quality wise its the same as Sasaki (i wonder if they get the same fish from the same place). We also tried their volcano roll which was very tasty. The tamago roll is also worth to try. We were very satisfied with the food. Its a place that i recommend but if you can go during off peak hours youll probably enjoy it better.

Ingredients are so fresh. It is one of critical factors to be a good sushi restaurant. We are so pleased with the quality. We ordered a take out of deluxe and normal chirashi. It is not cheap but worth every penny. Will be back.

The restaurant phone message states that the restaurant is closed until Tuesday, May 31st. Then it will reopen with its new hours: 12-6 Tue, Wed, Thr 2-6 Fri Closed Sat, Sun, Mon

I had seen sushi miyagi on several best sushi lists, one of them on the national level, so even though it is quite off the beaten path my husband and I decided to take the drive on a day off. It was definitely worth it! They are open very odd hours on Friday, 3-7, so given the horrendous traffic of the city we got there shortly after 3. It was jammed! We got the last table. The waitress was extremely welcoming and helpful. The clientele was oddly quiet, but it had a very charming mish mosh atmosphere. We got the spicy scallop maki, rainbow maki and the Houston maki. All of it was incredible, but the scallop was my favorite. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Don't be fooled by this hole-in-the-wall! Mr. Miyagi and his wife are the owners - Mr. Miyagi the chef and Mrs. Miyagi, the hostess, waitress, and cashier! A true mom-and-pop with delicious sushi and amazing service. I always get the Shaggy Dog maki, Spider Maki, or Shrimp Tempura maki, but my last visit I also tried the Tamago Sushi. The sushi is simply delicious - the price is definitely worth it. They also have a selection of nigiri for big groups, but I have yet to try those. If you go during peak hours, expect the service and seating will be slow. After all, it is a husband and wife team cooking, serving, and waitstaffing. The sushi Mr. Miyagi prepares is worth the wait!!!!

Wife and I went for a kind of late lunch on a Thursday. Sushi was authentic and very good not great. Prices were OK for portion. Sushi chef and waitress were working very fast but just couldnt keep up with the crowd. Atmosphere OK-a bit cramped and old.

Houston is full of high end glitzy Japanese restaurants but this place is a nice change of pace. It is run almost entirely by a husband and wife team. It is a small and quite restaurant and is a very relaxing place to have some basic but authentic sushi. The fish is high quality and they have many traditional Japanese dishes as well.

My new favorite restaurant in Houston! Have two more delicious morsels sitting in front of me as I write this. Fresh, innovative, the Houston roll is exquisite. BRAVO!!!

We came in and it wasn’t really busy today. We came and sat down. The waitress got our order in a reasonable time and gave us refills on our drinks. Our orders came out at one at a time but it was pretty quick. It was a bit pricy but it was high professional sushi grade fish! They also had real wasabi. The owners were really nice and kind. I really recommend to go here!

I'm no sushi expert, but I've tried enough different places to know this place is a cut above! Fantastic lunch special and very reasonable pricing.

A skilled Japanese chef and his wife, with everything made to order. So arrive early. Limited hours of operation. The lines form around 11:30 for the opening at noon. There are only 12 tables and the restaurant is staffed by the sushi master and his wife handles front of the room. The food is fantastic and I will let the photos tell the story. There is a lunch menu from which we made our choices. Recommended: the curry udon soup ; and the salmon salad; but everything here is great. On most days Sushi Miyagi is open only from 12 to 3 (see photo of business hours). I can't recommend this place highly enough. A Houston institution. I love the curry udon soup. The tofu salad is delicious as are all of the salads.

I continue to return frequently to Sushi Miyagi. I have not found better Sushi in Houston and have now tried many things on the menu. The restaurant is small, so come early to get a seat. Run by a husband and wife team alone, they define a family owned, small business. Closed on Mondays. I have never been for dinner, but understand that reservations are a must.

If you like traditional sushi this is most definitely the best place in Houston. The building looks super shady on the outside but when your large rolls emerge it is like a piece of heaven being imparted to you. They are open only a few hours per week which is irritating. The service is a bit unique as has been mentioned but you do not go to Chinatown for the service ever anyways, otherwise you will be disappointed. Kata and Uchi are good in their own way but do not compare to here. You will not find Uni or fancy fish here but you will find the best execution of sushi in Houston.

The place was small yet very well equipped, and decorated very traditionally, the flavors of the food and drinks were exquisite and sushi technique demonstrated a high level restaurant. Definitely will return to this side of town. My recommendation: miso soup, cold green tea and a combination of nigiri

I went with my husband, brother, and son. Everything we ordered was just what we were hoping for. The authenticity of this restaurant is what makes it so special

I had the best sushi of my life in this mom and pop Japanese restaurant in the heart of Chinatown in Houston. I understand why there was a line outside the door before it opened. It is that good! Don't expect much from the decor, but the food makes up for the decor. I highly recommend it and I look forward to eating their again soon.
good sushi but not worth a 3 hour wait
Better sushi than most places in Texas charging a lot more money, but come on I will never go back because standing around for 1 1/2 hours and then waiting another hour for the sushi to come is not what I signed up for. Pro tip, order something like friend chicken or pork chop to tied you over until the sushi is served. Like to food quite a bit.
