A more highly rated sushi restaurant was closed so we ended up here. So glad we did. Try the specialty rolls. The "ex lover" was amazing. So many flavors at once and no rice. We also had the "flaming ahi" with jalapeno. Beautiful presentation. Great friendly service.

Superb sushi. Our server Lucas was excellent, the rolls were wonderful including the Ultimate and the dirty blonde, and the salmon sashimi was fab.

Really excellent food - strongly recommended. Great choice, really fresh and fast service. Quite small though - so there aren't many seats.

The owner is an unprofessional and rude elitist. Having called and been informed earlier in the day that they do NOT take any reservations period, my family of four (including young kids) waited patiently for our turn on the waitlist. However, we were told by the hostess that we had been bumped by an “owner’s reservation” when our turn came up. When I asked the owner for an explanation, he pompously said “This is my restaurant, and I can do whatever I want!”. The problem isn’t so much that he wanted to help his friends, but the arrogant and offensive attitude he used to address a long-time customer from the neighborhood. Above all, the mediocre food cannot possibly justify the rudeness of the owner.

Once again rude behavior, first it was the owner now the hostess. The waitstaff was very nice but the hostess was very rude not only to us but several other people trying to get seated at the tables that are on the City of San Diego's sidewalk. Most locals go to Himutsu which is the best sushi in town and the management is VERY friendly, except it's hard to get a reservation. Never will give this place my money ever again!

It is a wonderful casual spot to enjoy variety of sushi and rolls. The place has pretty unique rolls which do not consist any rice. One of them called Ex Lover and it is very light and wonderful. I have an allergy for peppers and the chef was very accommodating. We had absolutely wonderful meal.

The sushi here at Sushi Nekosan was very good. It is very small in there with not a huge amount of seating. Would not give it a thumbs up on it’s atmosphere but that is just me. I like a more comfortable seating. Our service was spot on though. It’s a good place to eat if you want good sushi...

Sushi Nekosan has the best sushi in all of San Diego! Their fish is fresh and their rolls are creative! In addition to high-quality meals, they have a wide selection of drinks. The atmosphere at Sushi Nekosan is warm and inviting. If visiting San Diego, sushi Nekosan is the place to go for sushi!

The food was good but super expensive They brought all the sushi lumped together and did not explain what it was so the friends we were with ate 2 of my rolls and when I asked where they were they told me they had been eaten so we had to reorder I like it when they tell you when they tell you and show you which is what roll The food was good but expensive For 2 couples we paid $180 each

We live in La Jolla and my family has eaten here probably 10 times and this has become our favorite local sushi restaurant. First, the portion sizes are very generous for what you pay. Most importantly, the sushi is very fresh and they are presentation unique and inventive. We had their special sashimi which is four different kinds of fish, three pieces each. It was delicious and unique. Last night we tried the Ultimate Hamachi roll and we will get it every visit from now on. It was beautifully balanced with flavor and spice and is a meal in itself. We have had several other rolls and you can’t go wrong. The setting is also beautiful with mostly outdoor dining and heaters, and the service excellent. There’s also a great wine and beer list and I appreciate the Becks nonalcoholic alternative. This restaurant should be in the top 10 in La Jolla but just needs more reviews!

When I've been in Sushi Nekosan I distinctly recognized the fusion between Japanese and Mexican cuisine. The offer is assorted: from the traditional rolls like California, Spicy Tuna and Philadelphia, to the specialty rolls like Dirty Blonde, spicy crab and shrimp tempura (delicious), Ex Lover with yellowtail and salmon or Salmon Aburi with seared salmon on the top and avocado, spicy tuna, cucumber, asparagus....and more. The service is very kind and attentive. The location is simple but cozy. Recommended!

The quality of the sushi and sashimi was top notch -- good enough for a 5 star review. BUT, they were so slow that it really detracted from the experience. When we arrived, the restaurant was not very full, so we simply can't understand why it took about 45 minutes to get our food. Much too long to wait. The cat theme (Neko-san) is cute and fun.

Not directly by the main street. Outdoor and indoor seating. Large choice of sushi. We had raw tuna, and it was excellent. Reasonably priced.

Located on Wall Street between Herschel and Ivanhoe Avenues in La Jolla Village, Sushi Nekosan is a small, casual eatery that features Japanese cuisine such as creative sushi rolls, poke bowls and sashimi. My wife and I dined here during the latter part of September 2021. We had just watched the sunset in La Jolla Cove and didn’t have any firm plans for dinner, so we wandered around La Jolla Village until we stumbled upon an attractive place with a sign that caught my eye: Sushi Nekosan (Nekosan basically means Mr./Ms. Cat in Japanese). We were seated after about a ten minute wait. For our appetizers we shared orders of sunomono (marinated cucumber) salad and veggie gyoza (which actually had a light green color). For entrees my wife ordered Wild Albacore Mango Sashimi (seared wild albacore, mango, avocado, jalapeño, chili oil, with garlic ponzu) while I opted for an Aloha Roll (shrimp tempura, crab salad, cucumber, avocado, topped with seared salmon, micro greens, eel sauce, spicy aioli drizzle, and crushed macadamia nuts). Not only were the entrees unique and creative, they were absolutely fresh and delicious. The hard-working servers were covering a lot of ground, but still had time to provide us with attentive and friendly service. We were so glad we stumbled upon Sushi Nekosan and can confidently recommend it to other sushi-loving travelers.

Ordered several nigiri pieces + a roll. The raw fish part of the sushi was really good - fresh and generously sized. However, the rice was bland (lacking vinegar) and over cooked.

Enjoyed Sushi Nekosan by recommendation from our hotel consisquer. Perfect casual spot to enjoy a great selection of sushi. I tried for the first time black rice in my poke bowl which had fresh crab strands and plenty of tuna. Macadamia nuts and veggies were plentiful. Husband had the Aloha roll which was a good size and both of our sauces were flavorful. A solid choice for the diner who enjoys a casual place to enjoy sushi either with a small group or even the imdivual diner. Great music as well.

Nekosan is a great sushi place tucked away on Wall St La Jolla that my girlfriend and I discovered a few months ago....and we have returned many times since! Compact space, friendly atmosphere, and, most important of all....great sushi - they do it right. Very attentive service

The sushi is so fresh! My kids and I had a stop and wanted great sushi; we were not disappointed. The staff is super friendly and the food simply amazing.

I wanted a light lunch today and was in the area of Wall Street and Herschel in La Jolla, near the Post Office so I decided to try the new sushi place, Sushi Nekosan. The menu offered traditional nagiri and sashimi plus some really interesting flavor combinations for specials. I wasn’t quite hungry enough to try something with many pieces so I tried my favorites, maguro (tuna belly) and unagi (bbq’d fresh water eel). Both were very flavorful and textures were as they should be... tender and clean for the tuna... a bit crispy and still tender for the eel. The decor is fun and aptly filled with artistic renditions of happy, playful colorful cats painted on the walls... “Neko” means cat in Japanese. Next time I’ll bring my family with more time and more menu exploration!! Seating is available at the sushi bar and a fee indoor tables plus a fee outdoor tables. Parking is available on the street.

Tasty, fresh, creative and pleasing to the eye. Not quite the traditional sushi I am used to, much more contemporary with creative twists. There are so many menu options in addition to the chalk board specials that there is bound to be something for almost everyone to like. Sushi is not fast food so be patient as your order is expertly prepared. Pricing is commensurate with the high quality of the product. Friendly, attentive staff and a casual, comfortable venue make this a good choice for your sushi fix.

This has not only become our favorite sushi restaurant in town, but one of our hands down favorites...period. The heated outdoor environment is safe, comfortable and intimate. The service is fantastic, and the sushi is incredible, inventive and generous in portion. The rolls are complex and each has several kind of fish, and I recommend the Dirty Blonde and Ex Lover, and always consider the nightly special roll. The sashimi is also awesome, and the thinly sliced cucumber salad is a must.

Great food and friendly chefs and wait staff at this small restaurant in La Jolla village. We sat at the counter and watched the chefs. We had both fish and vegan dishes. I was so excited to try vegan sushi-it is not "a thing" in Atlanta where we live (yet). The Sweetie Pie (with sweet potato) and the Beu-u-tofu (topped with thinly sliced lemon) were delicious!

New place, VERY accommodating (the owner/manager would not quit on his outside heater until it worked to make sure we were comfortable). The sushi was fresh and delicious, not too pricey either. The Sushi Chefs came out and checked on us as well, took pride in their craft! The service was a little slower/forgetful. Seemed local too!

Hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had! From New York to international to San Diego, it’s the winner! Highly highly recommend. So fresh, such interesting and perfect combinations. A must try if you love sushi or even if you don’t you’d still probably love theirs! Appetizers: chicken karaage, cheese wontons, veggie spring rolls and beef gyoza. Literally all melt in your mouth perfect and fresh! Rolls: dirty blonde, Hawaiian, ultimate hamachi all phenomenal! The ultimate himachi had the perfect explosion of jalapeño, lemon, the freshest yellowtail I’ve had and perfectly cooked rice. You could feel the expertise and love in this sushi and we are definitely going to be regulars now!!! From an extremely selective foodie, I have rarely dined somewhere where I think I could pick a dish blindfolded and be overjoyed with it and I could totally do that here! Perfection👌🏻👌🏻🍣🍙🍤

Excellent place! 5 Stars. Maravillo. Very nice. I recommend it 100%. The service was perfect. Delicious Angila Scroll.
Never going to order from Sushi Nekosan again!
Sushi Nekosan let us down last night. Ordered more than $350 of sushi, kama, etc. on DoorDash last night for a UCSD graduation party. Order was confirmed by Nekosan at 7:01PM. At 7:45PM -- about the time the food was supposed to be delivered -- Nekosan CANCELLED the order. What?!? Super not cool -- ended up placing an order with Din Tai Fung and got our food at around 9PM, by which time we were STARVING. NEVER going to order from Sushi Nekosan again. It's a shame since we've been longtime customers, hanging in despite the gradual decline in their fish quality over the years. Photo is of our empty kitchen counter, waiting for the Nekosan order that never arrived. :(
