I guess soul food just really isn't my thing. The place wasn't that great and if you are looking for good bbq then this is not the place. The brisket was tough and the sausage was generic with a weird texture. The place is more for soul food like black eyed beans and collards and broccoli and rice casserole. Although that part of dinner was decent it was just too salty for me. Don't be drawn into the reviews that state the portions are huge. It is true but it's not worth it since the quality of the meat isn't that good. Left the place with an aching stomach.

Should market as SOUL FOOD rather than BBQ--not impressed. :(

I always do extensive research on trip advisor and other sites before visiting a city. I found Sweet Georgia Brown's rated very high on trip advisor and needed a good BBQ place while in Dallas. Following my Garmin, I approached the restaurant and thought "surely this can't be it! this has to be a different restaurant than the one Trip Advisor spoke of". It looked like a run down old wendy's building. OK---I still thought I'd give it a shot, also being a fan of hole in the walls. I walked in to find a confusing ordering/seating process. It is cafeteria style buffet, with the tray and cashier, and all. I didn't expect to eat with styrophome and plastic. I ordered the Rib Dinner for 11.95, I believe. That came with three vegetable or side choices. I got mac n cheese, sweet potatoes, and corn. HUGE PORTIONS!!!! (feed a family of 4 with one dinner for sure) The food was not good. It was all so incredibly greasy. The mac and cheese was so greesy, made with ricotta rather than smooth cheddar. The ribs were the worst part---there was so much fat and grissle on the ribs it made me sick. I couldn't eat but only one after fingering through it to find actual meat. My take out paper bag was soaked through with grease spots that had leaked through the styrophome container inside. Yuck! The best part of the experience was the staff was very friendly and accomodating. Servers come to your table very often. They also had gospel music playing very loudly, which I appreciated b/c of its soul-southern touch. It was also very neat to see the pick up truck out back selling watermelons--going hand in hand with the soul food experience. Unfortunately, because of the quality of food--being greasy and fatty- --I would not recommend this place for your experience in Dallas, TX for BBQ. Now, perhaps this is a "soul food" place and the food is typical to that genre. However, not ever having soul food, and expecting BBQ (Georgia's "BBQ") made me dissatisfied. Sorry, Georgia, I'm sure your sweet, but this girl left feeling dissatisfied. :( My new rule of thumb should be-----any place without a website should raise red flags for me.

Don't be fooled by huge portion sizes.....

By LivingSassy |

I enjoy some good soul food but it must actually be tasty to me and that includes being a quality dish. This spot misses on every option with the greasy food that either lacks seasoning or has way too much seasoning and ruins any flavorful quality. Greens should never be greasy and to see the grease is just horrid. I believe people frequent this restaurant because they do indeed give you huge portions, which is misleading to me. Just because you have lots of a dish certiorari not mean it's a good dish. I would bypass on this spot because it's simply not good quality soul food so please don't be mislead....Try at your own risk...

Soul Food not BBQ restaurant

By Travelingguyz |

Overall food was great. Huge portions. Meal can be shared. Friendly staff. OK so this is a typical "hole in the wall" with good soul food. Be prepared for a long line of waiting customers and food is served cafeteria style. The location is a bit worn and run down and not in the best part of town. Would return again if visiting Dallas.

Have Appetite, Will Feed should be their motto. Soul Food is about as good as it gets here at Sweet Georgia Brown's. Anything on the menu is simply delicious.

Amazing Food Along With Outstanding Service and AMAZING Portions :)

By Rhonda D |

I'm here to tell you this place is worth a very long drive or a short one if you're that blessed! Service with a smile, off the charts food (we had ribs, cabbage, mac n cheese, greens, brocc casserole, strawberry cake) along with cornbread and iced tea. Brought enough home for at least one additional meal. EVERYONE we chatted with in line were repeat customers with nothing but greatness to share. Will definitely return and highly recommend to all.

great place

By kiddp5 |

this place is omg good they have everything that a black grandmother will cook on a Sunday or thanksgiving its just a good place to have soul food dinner

Overrated is al l can say .........

By BuddyBurk |

You would be better off going anywhere but here . Bad food , way too much salt on everything , and to call that BBQ is a crime . Then you must guard your personal stuff with your life due to the rough area it's in .

Excellent Service!

By LaToya J |

Every time I come to Texas, I eat here! This place is excellent and the food lasts for your next meal, as well (e.g., you will have left overs). The lines are long, and they only serve dressing on Sunday. But the place is great! I just wish you would build a restaurant in the Frisco area, so when I visit Texas my drive is shorter to reach you :)

Large portions of bland food!!!!

By travelbug00shiloh |

I personally was not thrilled with my meal. Totally felt that it could have been better. My ribs, surprisingly, were very tender. I would suggest teaching the cooks to add more seasoning. I'm sure this place attracts more attention based on reviews but why not keep folks coming back by offering great tasting food :(. I agree with another review, the meat didn't taste as "smokey" as I expected. The mac and cheese was very dry. But the black-eyed peas were decent. When in town again, I probably would give this place another try just to try the fried chicken.

SO GOOD!

By Bruce415453 |

Friends who live near Sweet Georgia Brown have told me for a decade how good Sweet Georgia Brown is. They weren’t joking. It’s GREAT Southern cooking! So don’t let the plain restaurant appearance fool you. It seems crowded but there was enough parking. To avoid the line out the door, go for an early lunch or a late dinner an hour before closing. A warning first. You’re going to overeat there as the food is that good. And the servings are big enough for a football player. So drop a few pounds in the week before you go. I heartily recommend the mixed pound 3 meat combo as you get multiple entrees and BBQ sauces and gravies. This will fill your plate - a styrofoam to go container. Plus you get 3 sides. The ribs (untrimmed so you get the full flavor), smoked ham, sliced beef (the house brisket), turkey wings, and pork chops are terrific. You’ll need to trim some fat on some of the meats, but that’s easy to do. The sides of collard greens, sweet potatoes, and turkey dressing with gravy are heavenly. Plus there’s catfish, ox tails, and meat loaf too. With hot cornbread included. And they refill your drinks. All the staff was very friendly. Eat slowly, don’t talk, and leave some room – if that’s even possible - to share a slice of chess pie. You’ll love the place. Don’t be proud. You don’t have to eat everything in front of you. Ask for a to go box as necessary and take some of your meal home. And you’d be willing to spend 50% more here!

Okay, but not good enough to slap your mama.

By Kathryn S |

The food was okay, but not good enough to want seconds. The thing that I did not like about the food is quantity. By the time you get your plate, it looks like a pig's trough than a nicely prepared plate of food. The cabbage was overcooked and the okra and tomatoes were sweet (I guess that the cook uses barbeque sauce to make okra and tomatoes); however, the barbeque ribs were really tender.

Wow! My mouth is too full to say much more.

By unclecofie |

If you really like homecooking and soul food. This will go down as one of the best meals you've ever had. I work not too far away and have to restrain myself from coming in more than a couple of times per year. Otherwise, I'd have a big, big belly. The amount of food they pile on your plate is so over the top, it's like eating Thanksgiving dinner. Most recently, I had the pork chops, which were perfect and tender. The sides are outstanding, especially the mac and cheese and the pinto beans. If you're passing through Dallas on I-20 or heading south on I-35 or I-45, it's not too bad a detour, and definitely worth it. You're definitely in the 'hood when you come down here and the building is clearly an old, repurposed Burger King, but you'll be OK, especially a few bites into your meal.

Beef Tips & Rice on Tuesday 12/11/18

By MsWray |

The beef tips & rice were horrible, the meat had a funny taste & it was not true beef tips it was shredded something. I & my husband were in the bathroom after that meals. The only good thing on our plates were Broccoli rice Casserole. Something has changed with this recipe, in the last few years & I called several times for several days including twice today and no answer.

Looking for soul when mama ain't cooking

By ashleyj1972 |

I am Craving Sweet Georgia Brown's

By TexasMadeLady |

I live in Killeen, Tx and its about a 2 hour drive to Dallas. I must say that I will drive there anyday just to have some of that food. It taste just like my grandmother used to cook. I had beef tips, rice, sweet potatoes, cabbage and cornbred. They give you plenty of food, I was able to eat from my to-go plate 3 separate times.

GOOD HOMESTYLE COOKIN

By Lillie A |

they have lots of choices, give you plenty> get there early, lines long but food is worth it(beat the church folk)...big desserts>the downside is there's hardly any parking area and the place is pretty small

Satisfying

By Tim O |

One of the most satisfying meals I've ever had. I ordered the fried chicken lunch special that came with 3 sides - yams, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens. I knew as soon as I got the meal that I wasn't going to be able to finish it in one sitting. I ate as much as I could then ate the rest the next morning and it as still delicious. Bring a huge appetite because the portions are large. Parking might be problematic and the lines are usually long so be prepared to wait.

Eating on the road

By janice S |

Sampling the foods was a treat! Every dish was home made. The owner checked on us and each customer. My husband,, Wilm Rogers knew the owner and I was delighted to meet him Great food on our road trip driving from Atlanta to San Francisco. .

Huge helpings, great food

By rescue247 |

Dieters beware. this place is not for the calorie counter. The Sunday dressing is to die for. The German chocolate Cake is scrumptious. The service is fast friendly and the $ is more than fair. The only bad thing is the location. and the parking. I wish they would open another store.

DFW arrival and hungry

By REWEST |

I visit Dallas at least once a year. My ritual: Arrive, leave airport and head immediately to SGB's. I'm a Southern transplant living in NYC. While in Dallas (a city I'm glad to report still has a lot of Southern charm), a visit here is a must. I love the atmosphere - fancy doesn't always equate with courtesy and warmth. I'd take the latter (plus the good food) any day over the "fancy". BTW, I'll be in Dallas this Friday.

Good eating!!!!!!

By sameea134 |

I enjoyed my food, except for one thing the peach cobbler was not sweet at all, but everything else was excellent. I am from Chicago, have to stick up for my hometown which is the best of the best, however, Dallas Sweet Georgia Brown is like a place from home while I'm here.in addition, you get so much food....

Best Sunday Dinner

By Victor C |

If you are out of town visiting you should make it a point to stop by and get a plate. You can not find food cooked like this. The sides are second to none, best sides I've ever had.

Love this place! No frills!Delicious food and Wonderful Customer Service!

By ada62 |

Every time I go to see my sister, we go to Sweet Georgia Brown's. The food is consistently delicious. My goal is to try every item on the menu. It's going to take me awhile. They have so many choices. The food that they give you is enough for 2 people. The employees and owners are always friendly and personable. Please stop by the next time you visit Dallas. You will not be sorry!

Jammin Yams at SGB

By lifeisatrip1962 |

Sweet Georgia Brown's has the BEST yams ever! And I'm from New Orleans where we know good food!

Wanted some BBQ and home style cooking and found the place

By Rob W |

Visited with a few guys from work during a business trip. Having never been to Dallas I wanted to take the opportunity to sample the BBQ and we found our way to Sweet Georgia Brown's I has the sliced beef, collards, beans and corn and when I say they give huge portions I'm serious! The people were very friendly and I thought the food was great. Sadly, I couldn't finish all they gave me and, since I'm in a hotel, couldn't take it with me. I was not disappointed and would visit again. The atmosphere is casual.

OMG don't pass this place up

Sweet Georgia Brown

I enjoyed myself in Sweet Georgia Brown! The restaurant needs renovation! The food is great and satisfying!

Sides Galore

By EmmiePool |

This place was recommended over and over so we finally checked it out. It's not glamorous, but the food is so good. It's a cafeteria-style buffet with unbelievable sides ranging from okra to sweet potatoes to mac-and-cheese. The portions are HUGE, so make sure you have a place to store left-overs which the staff will gladly pack up for you. We were on business and some of us didn't have a place to bring the food back to which was a shame. The parking lot and area isn't fancy, nor is the seating, however, if you care about good food, this place is well worth a trip.

You can't judge a book by its cover

By BJManison |

Wow, what a restaurant! This is a true whole-in-a-hold restaurant. I never thought I would find a place where I couldn't finish my food in one setting, granted I'm a big guy and always finish my plate. The portions are insane, no need to measure the amount of food they give you they just slob it into a carry out tray and away you go. Took me 2 settings to finish it. They have all the typical BBQ food, sides, and desserts (as stated in the previous reviews), made with that soul goodness. The service is good too, especially the waiter, I forgot his name. Be Warned: This place does sit in the not so fancy area of Dallas, sometimes scary at night and the building is a little run down. I didn't run into any trouble though and its WORTH it for what you get. Ill be back!

Disappointed

By Susan B H |

We have been here before and everything we ate was great, the ribs, pork chops with gravy, oxtails turkey wings with gravy. All delicious last time we were there. On Saturday February 15th we went ready to get our grub on sat down took pictures and prayed then ready to dig in! One by one nothing was tasting right the oxtails were hard to pull off the bone and tasted like they had been cooked previously and frozen not the normal fall off of the bone delicious! Next I go to the collard greens and they taste like they added to much sugar to mine my husband had a different batch from me and he said his were just ok. Deeply disappointed! The mac and cheese didn’t taste good either now the one bright spot was the candied yams they were delicious! I was so deeply disappointed I had waited for 2 months to go here and nothing but the yams was worth going for. We might try them one more time but that might in the far future. So disappointed!!!

Excellent catered event at UTD

By yellowtj06 |

Wow this was great food the greens were wonderful, just wonderful. All of it was good and the black eyed peas with bacon good grief this is a place to eat! I've never had either be so good. I understand their location might not be the best but if I can get a chance I'm going down there for some food asap. I got to have some while at an event at UTD, the next day we all had to talk about how good it was. Simply amazing.

First time for "Soul Food". What a treat!

By IanU63 |

Stopped by SGB's on a Wednesday afternoon. Ordered the turkey wings w/gravy, collard greens, cabbage, and sweet potatoes. Everything was delicious (although unhealthy). Service was great, and staff was very friendly.

Too Much For Just One..!!

By Emanuel B |

Quality food..extra large portions with entree. I usually get the entree that offers three large sides and cornbread muffins, and I can not finish all of it. Prices are sufficient for the quantity. Great tasting barbecue and soul food.

Great little secret

By Tedjh62 |

In town visiting friends and wanted something that the locals go to and we found it! My friend said I'd like it but we loved it! No bells and whistles no fine china but large portions of excellent food! Can't wait to go back on my next visit!

A Dirty Hole in the Wall

By Dissappointed2013 |

I was recommended to visit this establishment by some visitors that came to my city (Atlanta) if I was interested in eating some soul, southern Cuisine when I visit Dallas, TX. Visited Dallas late Aug. 2013, couldn't wait to enjoy a good meal. BOY was I disappointed!!!!!!!! Upon arrival when you entered the restaurant and get in line, just the appearance of the ceiling (the dirt and grease hanging off the vents) was the first turn-off. They offer huge portion servings but the showcase was inundated with flies. The collards and red beans were extremely sweet. With Dallas summer temperatures , this establishment could definitely use a more updated air conditioning system, not a huge floor fan that will blow you & your food away. The bathroom was deplorable, these type of conditions are totally unacceptable, especially if you want patrons to spend an average on a $20 meal.

Bad food

By steven young |

I visited the dallas location on Saturday afternoon of January 3rd. Food is absolutely HORRIBLE! I honestly dont understand how they are still in business. I got food for me and my wife. Food is Bland, no seasoning, Mac and cheese was EXTREMELY SOGGY, sauce on the meatloaf is way too damn Sweet! No flavor in cornbread. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone!!

An unforgettable BBQ experience!

By Vic D |

I first ate at SGB's after searching trip advisor for top restaurants in Dallas in Aug. '08. At that time it was ranked the #2 overall restaurant! Having returned to dine several times since then and experiencing the same terrific food and service each and every time I can only conclude that the drop from #2 is a result of sabotage of the rankings by envious restaurateurs because nothing at SGB's has changed! I have eaten at BBQ places all over the U.S. (notably Memphis, K.C., and across TX), and SGB's is still currently my top choice for BBQ in TX. I have even made a few pilgrimages to the infamous Snow's BBQ in Lexington, TX . Granted, Snow's brisket was as good or better than SGB's, but nothing else there other than maybe their pork even came close to SGB's. SGB's is simply the total package! All of the side dishes are absolutely scrumptious, all forms of BBQ are unbelievable, the house BBQ sauce is delicious, all the from-scratch desserts are heavenly, serving sizes are big enough to save for multiple meals, the ambiance is one of a down-home BBQ joint with soul music playing on the TV monitors, staff are extremely friendly refilling your beverages, etc. Simply put: if you love BBQ then I dare you to go there and somehow not love the food!

After 10 years between visits still amazing

By MsQTBaTootie |

We have only been to this place twice, but with 10 years between the visits the food is STILL amazing!!!! Sweet potatoes, Mac n cheese, Greens, Meatloaf, Ribs, Sausage, Rice & gravy every bit so so good!

Used to eat here all the time until I came face to face with a ROACH!!

By kirkland92006 |

One day I went to sweet georgias with a friend, we ate here QUITE often. We dined in and as I began eating my food I saw a ROACH crawling on the bench seat next to me. I was so hurt because I REALLY loved their food. Of course hurt turned into OUTRAGE and I never went back. .Honestly why should I have expected any different, I mean the outside of the restaurant is a MESS. I cannot lie, I miss the food. I have not eaten here in a while. Honestly, if someone had told me they saw a ROACH, I would probaly not believe them & still eat here. That is how much I loved the food.

Great soul food

By KLM1914 |

Great soul food. Huge portions so you get more than what you pay for. Most importantly the food is really good too. The people are nice. It was a nice drive from north Dallas on my last trip but definitely worth it. You'll likely have leftovers.

Delicious, huge portions, and great service.

By dvswin3 |

The beef tips, ribs, fried chicken brisket and pork chops are spot on. They have delicious macaroni and cheese, greens and desserts too. Everything is delicious there's too much to try. The portions are huge.

Definitely Tasty BBQ

By Jared K |

I've read several other reviews which detail the sheer terror and discomfort at dining in this area of Dallas. I guess it might be a little intimidating if your usual stomping grounds include Highland Park and Uptown, but I didn't feel the least bit unsafe in broad daylight. That being said, if you have a concealed handgun license, it's probably not the worst idea in the world to pack some heat. With my trusty Springfield XDS-45 strapped to my ankle, I walked right past the "No Weapons Allowed" sign and headed inside in search of delicious barbecue. They have quite a few soul food options to choose from, but I wanted my meat smoked rather than fried or smothered. I ordered a Two Meat Combination Dinner: ribs and sliced beef with sweet potatoes, macaroni & cheese, and black eyed peas on the side. I had to start somewhere, so I picked the mac and cheese. Some of the cheese was grainy and hadn't melted properly, with big chunks of re-solidified cheese scattered throughout. The sweet potatoes were mashed, but there were still decent-sized chunks of potatoes left in. They also had a good sweetness to them. The black eyed peas came swimming in a sort of brown gravy. I found a slight spiciness on the back end which caught me a bit off guard. This was probably my favorite of the three sides. My brisket had a beautiful red smoke ring. The meat was very tender and pulled apart easily. It wasn't too lean or too fatty. The smoke flavor wasn't overpowering, but it was definitely there. I found just the right amount of seasoning, both on the bark and on the meat beneath. The ribs ended up being a really great end to my lunch. They were so tender that most of the meat had already come off the bone before I touched them. Maybe they were slightly overdone, but not enough to ruin things. The meat was moist and succulent and had a great amount of smoke. I also found a mild sweetness to the crust that was really enjoyable. Sweet Georgia Brown definitely deserves their place on D Magazine's "Top 100 Restaurants" list. Read my full review, complete with pictures: The Barbecue Fiend http://barbecuefiend.blogspot.com/2013/09/sweet-georgia-brown-bar-b-q-dallas-tx.html

Real Soulfood

By 306Fox |

If you are looking for real soul food this is the place to go. I've been coming here for years and their food is consistently good. My favorite dish is the beef tips and rice. The greens, cabbage, macaroni and cheese, and dressing with turkey gravy is a must try. The portions here are huuge! You could eat off of one plate for about two or three days. The barbeque doesn't have enough smokey flavor in my opinion. The corn muffins are delicious, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. There are also a variety of cakes and sweet potato pie.

Always a pleaser

By Anjel322 |

I have been going to Sweet Georgia Brown for about 7 years since i moved to Texas. It by far in my opinion is Dallas's best soul food. Cant begin on the quanity of food you get for the price! Its guarenteed to give you 2 to 3 meals at least. So if you havent gone you better get over there...Its great!!

Way TOO much food

By clois-gary |

Work staff amazing. Located in a Black area, all are welcomed with open arms. Totally safe to visit anytime. So much food on your plate that we will make 3 meals out of it. Bought two scrumptious deserts and had to bring them home. Walk in the door and the smell of down to earth soul food knocks you over.

The BEST BBQ ever!

By David_Will_32 |

While visiting friends in Dallas, I mentioned that I had been in Texas for a week and had not eaten BBQ. They took me to Sweet Georgia Brown's. Ribs, beef, collards, okra, black-eyed peas I watched as the helper kept spooning in the sides, and then added another bowl for the black-eyed peas. Wow - that was Friday supper and take-home for Saturday dinner! The food is great and the price is right! Did I mention that the dessert area is serve yourself! I would love to have the recipes for the sides. Sweet Georgia Brown's alone is worth the trip to Texas!

Southern Comfort

By Cherrie E |

I saw great reviews for this place and we just had to check it out. We were not disappointed! When there's a line waiting you know it's going to be worth it. It wasn't the style of buffet we were used to but more like cafeteria style. We had our choice of BBQ ribs, meatloaf, smothered chicken and huge pork chops. Side dish chioces included mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, greens, company beans just to name a few. Cornbread muffins come with your meal. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Sure isn't fancy but with food this good who cares! Be ready to be full as we brought home as much as we ate.

A MUST HAVE, A WOW FACTOR, SCRUMPTIOUS

By Richard G |

I am truly in love with this place. The food is so good, one visit just won't do. They give you plenty of food, as the Texas slogan "we do everything big in Texas" the bbq was so tender and mouth watering, pork chops was huge and golden brown very juicy, the turkey wings, huge and wonderfully cook, collards and cabbage taste like my grandmother. The broccoli rice casserole not enough adjectives to describe the delicious and delightful taste. The peach cobbler is soo ooooo good. If you visit the Dallas area it's worth the visit. I am planning a trip with family and friends just to take the to this restaurant.

Excellent down home cooking!

By Trotter1300 |

The food is down home southern cooking! Prices are reasonable. However, the bathrooms could stand some attention. Also a soft-serve ice-cream machine is an added attraction where you can serve yourself at no extra cost.

My Soul Food Fix

By DonePayingForPoorQuality |

I dream of their smothered turkey, yams, broccoli cheese casserole, and cream corn. They have decent bbq and great southern items such as fried pork chops, beef tips, crispy baked chicken, and fried chicken. Their sides are what makes me come back for more and more... their yams, broccoli cheese casserole, and cream corn cannot be praised enough. Their greens, cold salads, mac n cheese, cabbage, and mash potatoes are good I hear. You'll wait in long lines because the servers are extremely slow, but it's worth the wait... their portion sizes will blow your mind... and your tummy too if you're not careful. Come with a big appetite. This is a note a place for those who like bland flavors, white meat only, and organic options... this is down-home southern comfort food at its best.

Compliments to the chef

The food is delicious and I like the portions of food I received. I told my family and friends about Sweet Georgia Brown!!!!

Great food, no fluff

By Marie Eve P |

We moved to the Dallas area 3 months ago and were looking for some authentic regional BBQ. After reading many favorable reviews, we decided to try Sweet Georgia Brown. Don't let the exterior appearance fool you, that place has scrumptious meats and generous sides. The line is usually long and they sometimes run out of favorites (we had to go 3 times to finally be able to get some brisket) so go early in the day. Great food, no fluff. Highly recommend for people looking for southern soul food fix.

SGB, We'd drive 1000 miles to see you!!!

By sunrise_lioness |

My husband and I used to be truck drivers, and we often stopped in Dallas because we had a termindal there. When another truck driver invited us to try Sweet Georgia Brown's, we were skeptical. At first we were a little uncomfortable in the mile long line outside, but once we stepped up to that counter, there was no going back. The incredible food (which I can eat off of for at least 3 meals!!!) was served by very helpful and generous people. While we sat and ate, we were treated like royalty, people always making sure we had everything we needed. It was such a wonderful experience, we repeated it many times! Now that we no longer drive truck, we sure do miss those trips in to Dallas for the world's best southern cooking at SGB!!!

Horrible Holiday Vegetables

By Phykkie |

I visited Sweet Georgia Brown to order collard greens, yams, and macaroni and cheese for Christmas Dinner. The vegetables cost $50.00. When I got the vegetables home, I found all of the vegetables to be inedible. The greens had more fat than greens, the yams were too old, and the macaroni and cheese dish was hard and had a horrible taste. I threw away all of the items that I bought. I will not go there again.

Good Country Soul Food

By Gina S |

Sweet Georgia Brown's is one of those places where the servings are big and the food is delicious. If you're looking for a good piece of fried chicken, greens, rice, or 7up cake, this is the place to get it. Beware: the lines are long and it's often hot on that side of the restaurant but it's worth it!

Enormous Amount of Food!!

By derondah |

My family & I visited Sweet Georgia Browns during our visit to TX. I had never heard of the place & really didn't know what to expect once we arrived. Once inside you pick up a tray & go down the serving line choosing from a variety of meat & veggies (soul food). All orders are boxed in to go containers & can either be carried out or eaten in their dining area. We opted for dining inn since we drove quite a distance to get there. Overall the food was decent but pricey ($18 for a meat, 2 veggies & a fountain drink) & was more than enough for 2 people to share. But what really got me was the horrible conditions of the building & restroom! Both could definitely use some major renovating & this was a BIG turnoff for me. Those two factors alone would likely prevent my return.

Love it!

By TashaBTravelin22 |

The place was not what I expected on the outside, but the food was awesome! The portion fed myself and two other family members. Really good and worth the money!

Wow! I am glad I came to Dallas!

By emanon256 |

I was in Dallas for a week long class, I hard about this place on trip advisor. My advice is get there early, I didn’t get there until 7:45 and they were out of Ribs and BBQ Beef, but they were trying to get more ready. They were so nice and caring and felt bad that they had run out. I tried the Beef tips in Brown Gravy and it was no wonder why they ran out, that was some of the best beef I had ever had in my life! I also got Cabbage, Okra, and Collards. The sides were also some of the best soul food I have ever had. It had that perfect down home taste that most places just can’t get. The plate was so big, I can probably get 3 meals out of it. I recommend going there if you are ever in the area. And try and get there before they run out of what you like!

Well... I'm assuming that wind blew trash on the front lawn And in the parking lot? Not much but enough to notice! Be outside appearance of this place puts you in the mind of a hole in the wall dirty restaurant! Something told me to turn around and get back in my car!!! but the smell is coming from inside the restaurant made me open the door!!!! Wow!!! And wow!!! At 1030 in the morning In the winter time of Dallas It must have been too cold for flies Because all I seen Was beautifully prepared Soul food!!! I didn't get a chance to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with family And this was certainly my treat! I devoured... fried chicken and macaroni and cheese greens cabinets black eyed peas candied yams corn bread and pinto beans broccoli and cheese casserole potato salad turkey wings in dressing smothered in a delicious turkey gravy and an array of barbeque which included... smoke sausage ribs and brisket!!! Delicious!!! I want more! my friend in I ate for 2 days because the portions were so large! Just imagine that 30 pounds!! Lol! This food made my mouth so happy. ;) I can taste it now! Yummy! Despite the shabby inside And the bleached out bathroom of this place that's still look very dirty! I would again return For the good cooking and the excellent service and prices.!!!! This clearly explains The meaning of Big things come in small packages! Clean it up Sweet Georgia Brown and keep serving better mazing soul food! It's good for the soul Mind Heart And mouth! I will be back!!

rough area, but good food

By paulbflin |

Great food; go with an open mind, plan to get it to-go as it gets pretty hot in there, and is a little "iffy" at night. The door's all say no personal firearms admitted, if this gives you any idea about the area you are in... One ~12 meal seriously feeds 2/3 people. I am a pretty big guy and I didn't hardly get into mine. It is some great food to try if you are in the area.

Great food

By Miata |

Ribs and soul food? Yes please. This place was great. Its a bit off the beaten path for those visiting Dallas but its worth the drive. The portions are HUGE! Like one plate is a meat and 3 sides. Huge sides. 2/3 people can easily share one plate. We had leftovers for a day. Everyone was friendly and the service was quick on Wednesday afternoon. Im still dreaming about the candy yams!

Too much hype, very disappointed

By Jimmyc1017 |

A bus load of us stopped by there on Memorial Day 2017 coming back from New Orleans. I was excited because I had seen the TV ads and heard some good things from a few people about how good the food was. They called ahead to tell them that we were coming by, so I will list the reasons that I won't ever go there again. (1) After the bus parked in the back, I walked past a back door that was opened, so I looked in and was shocked at how dirty it looked back there near the kitchen. (2) Still willing to give the food a try, I got in line and they are so slow and pricey. (3) I was about the 8 person from the bus in line, yet when I got almost to the place to order, they announced that they was out of BBQ, so disappointed. (4) I left the line for a few minutes to rush to the rest room only to find something out of a horror movie. The doors didn't close properly and the men's rest room looked like something in a small town garage type gas station, dirty and ragged. I was so glad that I didn't have to sit down to relieve myself. When I was leaving, I ran into a Lady from the bus and I told her how bad the men's rest room was and that she should go to the bus to use it, but maybe theirs was better than the men's. After coming out, she told me that the women's restroom was no better than the men's. (5) The floors was greasy looking, so after that I went to get my wife and we went to a chicken place across the street without getting to taste their food. Some people left and some stayed, and we got mixed reviews as to the quality of the food, some said it was good and other said it was just ok, especially for the high prices. One diabetic said that everything had too much sugar in it, as if that is their secret to each dish. I will say that everyone said that they gave large portions if that is all that you care about. A two meat BBQ plate is about $19.95 with three sides. They had smothered turkey wings plate for $14.95 plus tax. I honestly think that the food might be OK, but they need to upgrade that place. I Don't see how they pass State inspections with the conditions of that place. They had a long line as long as we was there, so I can't understand why they won't put some of that money back into the repairs and remodeling, also a bit of bleach or pine sol will go a long ways to clean it up a bit. Dirt in bath room sink and commodes are caked on like those bathrooms you see on bad horror movies. I went there with hopes of getting to taste some good food only to go away with bad memories and the sad thing is that I wasn't the only one.

Great soul food and people

This is my favorite place in Dallas. The people here are great and I love supporting the independent restaurants. The portions are enormous.

I worked there

I worked there, it's the nastiest restaurant I've ever seen, asbestos is all about the place, it filthy

Sooooooo good!!

Sweet Georgia Brown is by far the BEST soul food restaurant I have EVER been to! The servings are very large! You will eat on this meal for days! The staff is super friendly! I can't come to Dallas and not stop in! I went tonight and for me and my fiancé to eat it was only $28...and we have enough leftovers for lunch and dinner tomorrow!!! GOOD FOOD, GOOD PEOPLE, GOOD PRICES!!!

Food! Fun & Fabulousity!

By 979msd |

Myself and 3 other ladies took a visit to Sweet Georgia Brown's - we hadn't been in YEARS! The service was very friendly and helpful, the food presentation was good and the servings were "SUPER-SIZED"! Well worth the value and the food was DELICIOUS! I am very particular about eating greens in public - but they were GOOD and fresh. Thank you Sweet Georgia Brown, we WILL return when in the area...

If only food was this good at home

By keymstr |

I recently moved form Oklahoma City, to Fort Worth Tx. Lived here for about 18 months and have never heard of SGB's. A friend in Oklahoma bought a car in Dallas and was taking the train from OKC to Fort Worth so I was to pick him up, and take him to pick up his car. When I picked him up, the first thing he said was I want to try SGB's. I had never heard of it and his mouth dropped open. Well, we found the place, and let me tell you, I it's been months since the visit and we still talk about the food when we talk on the phone. I got the Beef Tips over Rice, Cabbage, and Collard Greens. When the helpers came up to refill our drinks, I told her to go to the back and tell my Grandmother to get out here. I Never in a million year thought I'd find a place to top my Grand, but I have. I am originally from Houston (left for the military in 79). When family comes up to visit, I take them over to Dallas to SGB. My rating would have been a 5, and I understand the want to make have the feel of a down home place, but I've noticed corners that haven't seen a cleaner in years, and with it's populaity, I would think the enterance at least would have been enlarged, so customers (there bread and butter) did not have to stand, in the summer heat, or the rain, or winters cold. Otherwise, AWESOME experience.

Abundant Home Spun Food With a Touch of Soul

By Hotel-Restaurant_Critic |

There is almost always a line. The show Diner's Drive in's and Dive's need to check this place out! It advertises as a buffet but it is not all you can eat, BUT it is all you will need to eat. They pile the food on.It is served Luby's style by a person behind the counter and You will need a to go box! Decor is old and worn and may need some cleaning, They have a small area that you can get some peach cobbler or whatever they have for the day. The owner sets in the dining room watching over everything. The pork ribs are amazing!! If you go on Sunday get there early or you will have to wait a while. One other thing. Everything thing is served in a to go container , Why? because you going to take it home anyway, You will not be able to eat it all. It will cost around $35.00 for two,

Awesome Soul Food

By Fearless632418 |

Sweet Georgia Brown has phenomenal food! My favorite is the fried pork chops. You get 2 huge pork chops, perfectly fried, and delicious. My husband loves the beef tips in brown gravy. You can get them over rice or mashed potatoes. They have lots of veggies to choose from. We both love the macaroni and cheese and the broccoli/rice casserole. The black-eyed peas are great as well. We normally get 3 meals out of each order. We drive 40 minutes to eat at Sweet Georgia Brown, and it is well worth it!

The Soul of Soul Food

By Carisa P |

This is one of those places that you have to 'understand'. Yes, it's sort of a hole in the wall, but OMG the food is absolutely DELICIOUS! Each time we are in Dallas, we have to go to get us some delicious soul food! Everything we have tried has been umm umm good! From the ribs to the meatloaf, from the cornbread dressing to the mac and cheese, EVERYTHING has been cooked to Big Mama's approval and perfection! The desserts and sweet tea are also delicious! The servings are always enough for one giant or two average-sized diners. We actually enjoy dining in and relishing the genuine friendliness of the staff and fellow diners. We have been here several times, and it's always a win! They definitely put the soul in soul food!

This is by far one of the best SOUL FOOD restaurants around. The food is authentic and feeled with that Deep Southern Flavor. Also the portion size is enough to feed two people from one plate. I am going there tomorrow with two of my friends and I bet we all leave with smiles on our face.

If you are complaining about the Ambiance, you are in the wrong place

By DSTSS |

Love/Hate: Love...the food...very good food that stands out in a town full of Corporate-Expense-Account Restaurants....I've lined up around the side of the building 15 minutes before it opened on a Sunday afternoon...by any standard, it is good southern food...by Dallas standards, it's great southern food....and the people are nice...the people that work there..the people waiting in line..there is something contagious about standing in line with a bunch of people excited about what the food they are going to eat... Hate....hates a bit strong of a word...but there are some serious drawbacks...location being one....it's not good..one Sunday afternoon I was eating there by myself when a homeless fella sat down at my table and started hitting me up for money...it was an uncomfortable 2 or 3 minutes..and then the security guard saw him and walked him out...it's just hard to feel good about that kind of situation...or even to know what to do...The restaurants not particularly clean....outside of the food and the friendly people...there really aren't any other positives... The best thing I can say for this restaurant is that when my mother flew in from NC to see Dallas for the first time...I took her to Pappas Bros and Sweet Georgia Brown's to eat....even an envirnoment this uncomfortable is worth it for real comfort food....

Soul Food Paradise

By tenisheat2016 |

Where do I begin, the exterior & parking lot is questionable but when you enter the building and the aroma hits you forget everything else. Expect a line but it's well worth the wait. I had the rib dinner with macaroni & cheese, collard greens & pinto beans. I had to get dessert because they looked so good. I got a slice of German chocolate cake & 7-Up pound cake. The food was so good it had me licking my fingers. I was so full afterwards I had to take a nap. The ribs we're meaty and fall off the bone tender in a yummy BBQ sauce. All the sides were outstanding. Best soulfood meal that I've had in a long time. Can't wait to return to try the catfish.

The food

By Elonda L |

The bbq wasn't very hot and the taste was below average. They give overwhelming amount of sides. I only tried the hot links and ribs because of that reason.. 20 dollars. Would not be returning.

O Lord What a FEAST

By Joyce A |

My Friends and I came from Fort Hood for dinner. I have 3 words for this restaurant "OO MY LORD"!!! The food is GREAT. Don't sleep on Sweet Georgia Brown. I was full past my stomach. There was a young man "Andre" how was a joy to talk, had a pleasant attitude and helped me put my leftover in a bag. He was servicing the tables and helping everyone out, with a smile on his face. I'm already planning my next trip to Sweet Georgia Brown's.. Joyce Arbaugh

Two thumbs down.

By Angelia G |

The line made me think it was gonna be worth the wait in the hot line..well I was very disappointed..... They serve the food like they are serving slop.. BBQ sauce was dripping from my bag the taste was nothing to talk abt I feel I wasted time and money and who wants to do that... And the sauce was dripping from all of our bags..

Great hole in the wall serving classic Southern dishes...

By SaQwinta B |

Almost everything on the menu is delicious and tastes fresh. Over the years I've gotten catering from SGB for the holidays as well. They're dressing and greens are to die for! Also, the meatloaf is sooo good and a huge portion. It's a little hole in the wall but the food makes up for the ambiance.

Waste of time

By BUSAMAN007 |

Yes the place looked like they had some good food but I was wrong Portions where big but food really wasn't that good If I ever go back I would order the fried chicken The bbq sucked and ribs had no flavor I did have a piece of red velvet cake It was the best thing they served there

Great experience

By Timothy L |

Great experience they were outta yams so I choose the Mac and cheese not that big of a fan. I chose the turkey wings greens peach cobbler and Mac cheese if you bring your family be prepared to spend but it's worth

Great food and service

By Monica D |

The food was great. They give you large portions and the service was A1. I had the meatloaf with cabbage, yams and baked mac with peach cobbler and a drink for less than $20. I literally had enough for 2 meals. I will definitely be going back upon my return to Dallas.

OMG! The BEST home-cooked food!!

By Brenda H |

We had heard several people talk about this place for a long time but just now got to go there. What a great decision! There are so many vegetable choices not to mention the meats! The brisket & sausage were amazing. We also had fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, corn, black eyed peas, sweet potatoes, cabbage, & boiled okra between 2 of us. We will be able to eat off this at least 2 more times! Don't wait as long as we did to visit this restaurant. Go now!!

What an amazing lunch!

By Sharon D |

We came on the recommendation of a friend. He said it was the only place for Soul food in Dallas. There were 6 of us and we brought more food out with us than we were able to eat! Every bite was an amazing experience. If you enjoy home cooked food by the people who know how, get yourself to Sweet Georgia's!!

Need to add online ordering for out of towners.

By Janell G |

I rate SGB a five for the generous amount of food they pile on your plate. It's definitely enough for several meals. The only thing is there is no capability to order on line and pick up. If you don't live in the Dallas area, it's not very accommodating. You have to go place the order and then drive back to pick it up. Should have online ordering and payment or, at least, be able to place and pay your order online, then all you have to do is make one trip to pick up. PLEASE CONSIDER, I DO NOT LIVE IN DALLAS.

After Church Goodness!

By DeShunda M |

I don't frequent SGB too often for obvious reasons, all the good glorious portions but when I do, I'm in heaven. I ordered the two meat combo, BBQ beef and ribs, mac and cheese, greens and sweet potatoes, PERFECT! I even have enough for a 2nd meal later or for lunch tomorrow.

Great food, and even better price!

By April J |

My family of four and I dined here this afternoon for a late lunch. We ordered a 2 meat Combination family Meal, which came with 4 "family" size sides. There was more than enough food, so much so that we have leftovers. Everything was delicious. My only critique however is the sliced beef could've benefited from more seasoning. All in all it was a great lunch. For all of us to eat included drinks was a "whopping"....$50. You definetely get your bang for your buck here!

Best soul food in texas...

By ashleydee972 |

I LOVE Sweet Georgia Brown. I have been going there since I was 16 years old. We lived almost hour and a half away so that tells you how loyal we are to this place. When I moved back to Texas I just had to have it. I make sure I go here everytime I stop in Dallas. Warning, it is a hol ein the wall, however, whenever you see it there is always a line out the door. The food is awesome. The best mac and cheese I have ever had, its like somebodies grandma was in the kitchen making it from scratch. Also, the cat fish is my favorite with sweet potatoes. I brought my friends from out of town and now they are hooked as well. I would suggest going at odd times because they can get pretty busy. The portions are huge and last me like 2 days to finish but you definitley get your monies worth. Overall, if you love soul food then this is the place for you!

Hole in the wall soul food place

By Mtnest2012 |

The place looks like an old Hardees’s. This is not fine dining, its soul food and it’s the typical hole in the wall atmosphere. For those that know what this means –enough said. For those who need an explanation – don’t eat in, don’t sit down, don’t touch the walls, and don’t go to the bathrooms. The food is great. I ALWAYS get the food to go. The portions are large and the sides are good. It’s enough for 2 servings. The later you go on Saturday, the longer the lines. So go early.

Dallas best soul food spot

By Ladee |

The bbq ribs, sausage, fried chicken, mac & cheese and greens were delicious!! I couldn't decide on which meat so I got them all. True soul food restaurant with great quality and price. No matter what time you arrive, there's always a line and once you taste this wonderful food, you'll know why!

Love soul food

By Betty A |

While visiting friends in Dallas, they treated me to this great place. Everything was a feast to my eyes since I live in Mexico and don't see this style of cooking. My plate was barely able to allow for a taste of everything and the "greens" were the best I have ever tasted.

homecooking without the work

By atxgrl79 |

I never come here for bbq not to say its not good i just have never tried it. I dont know how this place stays in business with the enormous portions that are served. I have had the pleasure of enjoying the cornbread, meatloaf, mac n cheese, greens and brocolli cheese. I enjoy this meal so much that all 4 times i have gone i have ordered the exact same thing. Friends have tried the other items and agree that the food here is the real deal. It is in what i describe as a sketchy side of dallas however i'm not from the area so i'm only basing this statement on what the surrounding look like. this is pretty much a little hole in the wall but if you can see past that you will be satisfied. the last time i visited there was security on site.

Horrible

By ffrancises |

I visited Texas for the superbowl. And if this is one of the best bar b que places in texas. Someone is smoking crack. This place is in the ghetto. The places is dirty and disgusting. The food was gross. Even the paper cups for you to get a drink were dirty. I never give reviews but i couldnt pass on this one. You will never see this place on any of the food shows. There is one enterance and one exit. The front door glass was broken and it was taped together Avoid this place seriously

Amazing Food & People

By David |

When you walk into a soul food restaurant and there's blues or gospel and a line out the door you know it's gonna be good. Picked the two meat combo and had enough left over for round two later that evening. It included healthy portion 3 sides. One of the best service experiences I had in a while. I definitely will be back!!!

Real Down Home Soul Food

By MzScorpio1978 |

I had the pleasure of enjoying Sweet Georgia Brown when I came to visit Dallas this past weekend. I am from the Bay Area (Northern Ca). My mother used to cook like this before she passed in 1996. Since then I haven't had no real Soul Food. I looked this place up on Yelp and there was some really good reviews. We tried to go eat there on Saturday but the line was almost around the restaurant. My sister and I said "You know the food is good if the line is out the door" So we came back Sunday before everyone got out of church and the line was still out the door. This time we waited. It was well worth the wait. They give you big togo plates just incase you can't eat it all like I couldn't. I order the 2 Meats and 3 Sides plate. Greens (off the hook), Mac & Cheese (um um good), Black Eyed Peas (awesome), Ribs and Sausage. That was the only thing I bought to eat for that whole Sunday. For $17.30 with a drink was a good deal for me to keep me eating all day. I would recommend this place for any one who visits Dallas. Anytime I touch down I will make sure I get me some Good Ole Sweet Georgia Brown.

Exactly What You are Looking For

By lindymae |

We loved being there. The place is steeped in food smells and lively chatter between the regulars in line. The line was long, but it moved at the perfect pace to allow time to solidify our order. The BBQ smoke is pervasive and mouthwatering. We were so hungry by the time we got our food. The place is crazy generous, so order accordingly.

Wow that was good

By treyd317 |

The best soulfood u will ever taste outside grandmomma's kitchen.true Tha building could use a little of the money (i've herd Tha place clears 3 million a year)but I'm sure they use that money 4 food because the servings are enough for u to eat on for a full day.I live in Washington,DC but was born and raised in the oak cliff section of Dallas and this one of the biggest parts of the city I miss

Yummy!

By MrsAleaks |

Went here for lunch and they never disappoint. My husband and I have been here a few times and everytime we go we leave stuffed. They give you enough food to eat on all day long and they have free ice cream. There homemade cakes are great to.

Great southern BBQ

By wesley_lysaght |

Just walking into the store you are greeted with the scents of delicious home style cooking. Friendly staff greet you and tell you about the specials they have today and guide you through the various selections of meats and vegetables. Worth a second trip just to try their pound cake!

Good!

By Keimya |

My brother had been here and raved about the food. I love soul food, therefore I decided to be the judge of that. Outside and inside looks like a hole in the wall, which is fine... Since they sometimes have the best food. I had the ribs, macaroni and cheese, greens and yams, because They did not have fried chicken on the menu that day. No banana pudding either 😟. All the food was good being slightly above average. They pile the food up.

Makes Your Toes Curl Up Good!

By Tim L |

FABULOUS! This place is one of the best restaurants EVER! The photos do not do it justice! The meat on the ribs flowed into my mouth! The yams are exactly like my grandmother used to make. The collards were perfectly seasoned. I am a pinto bean lover and know if they are good and these were great! The peach cobbler made my toes curl up! It ain't fancy. However, I have been to FANCY and I would take this place every day of the week and twice on Sunday! We were driving to Dallas and this place turned out to be about 10 minutes out of the way and we are so glad we took the time! Service was excellent, people were friendly and efficient!

The Best Soul Food EVER!

I moved away from Dallas five years ago. The one and only thing I miss is Sweet Georgia Brown!!! The atmosphere may not be the greatest, but the food makes up for it all. It is simply the best.

Mmmmm Good

By Adallas11 |

Being an over the road truck driver its good to get home cooked food.. We always stop whenever we are in Dallas.. They have some of the best down south home cooking around.. Two people can share a plate and still have leftovers.. You gotta try the sweet tea and the pound cake.. Always friendly faces greet you as you enter the door.. A visit to Dallas isn't the same without Sweet Georgia Browns..

Surprising...........

By okoye |

It was surprisingingly good! I loves it. It was great to get a somewhat home cooked meal that I or my mom didn't prepare. Just remember to pray over your food just as you would at home or anywhere else you eat!

Soul Food at its Best!!!

By CordeyLash |

As a native of NC, this place reminds me of grandma in the kitchen or homecoming at the church, it is just INCREDIBLE! The portions are enormous and thus creating tremendous value, but be prepared for left overs, and theyre even better the next day! My favorites are: Collard Greens, Cabbage, Mac n Cheese, Candied Yams and Broccoli Casserole...

Greens to die for

The food is CONSISTENTLY amazing...... Even though I don't live in Dallas anymore, it's my tradition to stop by EVERY time I hit the city limits. 3 thumbs up!

Best soul Food Anywhere

By Quetta |

I visited Sweet Georgia Browns while vacationing in Dallas with friends. I always shy away from soul food restaurants because my family has such amazing cooks and I hate to be disappointed by comparing my family's cooking with a restaurant only to be disappointed. Well I didn't have that problem here. By far the best soul food I've had (next to my momma's of course). Their smothered turkey wings are amazing! This was the best food experience during my entire stay in Dallas, and it'll be my first stop each and every time I'm in town.

By curt1480 |

It was average as far as buffets go, but because it is BBQ I have to upgrade it some. There is not much to say other than its a buffet of BBQ so you should get full before you leave and I must say the BBQ was better than some places I have tried BBQ is Texas, so good job.

Soul Food and BBQ to Die For!!

By Craig N |

I saw some really awful reviews on here. I'm guessing they're not Southerners. This is the BEST Southern cooking around! The service is excellent. Yeah, it's funky, but that's almost a requirement of a BBQ restaurant because they mostly do takeout so folks don't eat in all that much although we always do. I've never eaten anything there I didn't enjoy. Not a thing. I think they have excellent corn bread. Cooked up right and doesn't fall apart. Fall-off-the-bone ribs. Brisket you can cut with a fork. Tender pork. I could go on. If somebody doesn't like the food here, they aren't going to like soul food anywhere. We have a BUNCH of Southern cooking and BBQ restaurants in Dallas. I've eaten at MANY of them in my 35 years here and Sweet Georgia Brown is still the best of them all. Everybody has a bad day and so do restaurants, but i must have missed them all. This review asked about vegans and vegetarians. Do us all a favor and eat someplace else. Please.

Made me do a Jig

By bayougurl |

Now, being from Southern Louisiana, I take my food seriously. I will admit I was a little apprehensive about the area and the restaurant itself when my husband and I first pulled up to the building. Once inside, I watched as a man piled food into the styrofoam plate, and I realized quantity would definately not be a complaint. After taking my first bite of the broccoli casserole, I quickly saw quality would not be a complaint either. With each side I tried, the flavors kept getting better and better. Only those who truly love food can understand when I say, "It was so good it made me dance a jig." If you come to Dallas and want soul food, you must make a stop at Sweet Georgia Brown's.

Great experience

By Pamela M |

We were there in August. The food is delicious and the portions are huge. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. I would go back to Dallas just to have that meal again.

FOOD POISONING

By Lotta_car_22 |

I like to patronage down home cooking restaurants because its nothing like eating a home cooked meal. The food was good, just as good as home. The portions you get are enough for 2 maybe even 3 people. The restaurant itself could use some updating or even be renovated. The eating area was small and it looks old. I mean there was people lined up when we got inline and lined up after us. Its just the after effects you have to worry about. There was 6 of us that ate on Monday, August 10, 2009, about 6:00 that evening. There was 3 out of the 6 that ended up with Food Poisioning, we all ate something that someone else had. Only difference is that those 3 had not had anything to eat that morning, and the rest of us had cereal for breakfast. I had to cancel my vacation plans due to my relatives getting food poisoning. The only thing that I could recall is that while they were serving us they were changing pans out with a worker who didn't have gloves on but he had a towel. We were unable to pin it down to a particular food we eat because everything was hot and tasted good. I would just be careful eating here because the food is good but very heavy on your stomach. Basically, eat at your own risk.

Wow! Good eatting

By Kia0601 |

The lines are very long but they move very fast. The workers are friendly and funny. Great environment. It may look like you may not get a seat but alot of people get their orders to go. The food is get and you get a lot of it. I had plenty of it leftover. The parking could be better there is not alot of parking space.

SPECTACULAR!!!!

By CDR13 |

My last day in Dallas my friends and I had no idea where to eat on our way to the airport. We decided on BBQ but didn't know which place to choose. My friend googled "BBQ buffet", Sweet Georgia Brown popped up, and off we went. Our mouths were watering when we caught a whiff and we couldn't believe our eves. Ribs, hot sausage, fried turkey, w/ the best sides you can imagine, and all fresh! We actually saw someone peeling a box of fresh sweet potatoes, nothing from a can. The epitome of home-cooked Southern food! I had ribs (falling off the bone tender w/ wonderful sauce), broccoli rice casserole (creamy yumminess), collarss (just like Grandma's), and candied yams (smack yo mama). Did I mention the cornbread and butter they give you w/ each plate? And of course, sweet tea to drink. Servings are enormous, the three of us could have shared one plate (and we are not light eaters!), so eat it all if you're going to the airport...or leave everyone's leftovers w/ the poor soul who lives in Dallas. She'll eat for a week!

You owe it to yourself to stop here!

By mnortiz03 |

Great food! Classic southern soul food served buffet style. Nothing fancy so go as you are. My daughter and I had the rib plate that fed 2 people that came with sides, we had Mac n cheese, greens and mashed potatoes with gravy. Sooo good! My husband had meatloaf that he and our newphew shared with stewed okra, cream corn and broccoli casserole, also good! It's like Sunday dinner any day of the week. There might be a line but go ahead and wait....it's worth it.

4 meals on a plate

By afreemanarts |

My GOD! The servings on 1 plate was enough to feed 4 people. The food was great. Seasoned well. I would definitely go back again.

Waste of time

Embarrassed that this is #1 for Dallas

By revkid |

I use TA often, but never for my own city. I couldn't believe when I looked and saw that SGB's was #1, not just for soul food, but overall. Please don't drive all the way out there to eat SGB's. It's not horrible, but very, and I mean very, pedestrian. If you want accessible and authentic soul food, drive across the Trinity river from downtown and go to Odom's. As for the best in Dallas, most of the places along Knox/Henderson (Cafe San Miguel, Hibiscus, Fireside Pies, The Porch, Taverna) are very nice, there's York Street (near Skillman and Live Oak), great tex-mex along Maple Ave (esp Avillas), lower Greenville Ave still attracts w/ places like Teppo (sushi). About 8-10 miles north on Greenville (in Richardson) there is some great, authentic Asian food. Steakhouses are plentiful. For consistent quality and nice atmosphere trust Al Biernat's or Perry's. Bob's, Pappas, et al. are fine, but they are definitely oriented to the guy-in-town-for-a-convention crowd. Avoid Victory Plaza if you can...

Sunday Dinner

By GoodTimeSmitty |

Went on a Sunday for dinner off a recommendation from the staff at my hotel. When I arrived the line was right out the door but moved fairly quickly. The service was fast and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. The food was really good and the size of the portions given were great for the price. If you have room for desert, the sweet potato pie was amazing. It was definitely worth the trip and I will return the next time I'm in Dallas. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try if you're in the area.

Love this place!

By GeeSeez |

Everytime I come to Dallas, I must stop here. The cashier could be a little more friendly. But the food is always good when I stop by.

How good can it get...

By BBQUEMAN |

This place is out of the way. It's a drive, but is it worth it? Absolutely. If you're looking for well-prepared, down home cooking, make your way here and you won't be disappointed. There is a lot to eat. You start at the front door, faced with a choice of meats and side dishes that can, and should, make your mouth water. Be prepared. The line is sometimes long, but not on the night we were there. The servers are facing you, asking what you want. You'll have a choice of meats and then a choice of mac and cheese, beans, slaw, sweet potatoes and more. Be prepared to eat a lot because the portions are generous. Everything is well prepared. Is everything the best of class? Probably not, But, if you looking for everything that is just plain good, in a food shack kind of environment, with a friendly waitstaff, then make your way to this place. It is a very good restaurant and a good place to have a meal in Dallas.

Damn good food!!!!

By Berry316 |

Me and my girl was in Dallas on a tour and was told about this place by one of the tour guides. We decided to take a visit. Soon as you walk in your greeted with wonderful smells of BBQ and soul food cooking. You would think you were back in your moms kitchen. I had the pork chop dinner with 3 sides. My girlfriend had the rib dinner. The portion sizes were plentiful. I would definitely recommend a visit you won't regret it!

Still The Best in the Country

By Richard S |

Got off plane a Love field and went straight to SGB. Took my food to my hotel and they give you so much, I was able to eat dinner two nights on the same plate.

WOW

By Richard S |

Great soul food, everything made from scratch. highly recommend this eatery, it is not in the best part of town, but well worth your time. I suggest getting your food to go!

Unexpected Suprise

By josephwX4793ZX |

I was told to go here by my fellow co-workers to try the home cooking and wow they didn't disappoint. When I walked in they had smother turkey Wings, collards, cornbread, black-eyed peas. Now folks, this is some good eating! The outside may want to make you turn around, but the food keeps you coming back for more. Staff was excellent, polite and very proud of their food. I came back next time I was in town with another co-worker and he loved it! Give it a try today!

On a Facebook friend’s recommendation

By Ryan S |

On a Facebook friend’s recommendation while in Dallas for the Steelers game we drove to SGB’s the place was the traditional Soul Food restaurant. Food was pretty good but a little pricey. Macaroni and cheese and cabbage was great. The smoke sausage was amazingly good and the ribs had to much bbq sauce on them. The portions were huge. I would go back.

BEST DAMN SOUL FOOD PERIOD!

By PoloBear52 |

While on a roadtrip with a pal in dallas we asked around about good places to eat and we were told to try sweet georgia browns in oakcliff and boy did we get a surprise! The food was incredible and very tasty, they really know how to pile it on your plate, the staff was friendly and the meal was reasonable. I will be back again soon!

You Won’t Be Disappointed

By James B |

I’d hear about this restaurant several times, then I looked up the reviews while in Dallas. Those led me to go. When I arrived, the line was long but moving. The gentleman who took my order was extremely nice and professional. He guided me through the way to get the best bang for my buck. I was honestly surprised that he and the other staff were so kind and patient. Then when I checked out, a nice lady bagged by meals for me. I gave her a tip because I like to check my food before leaving. I had fried chicken, ribs, Mac-n-cheese, dressing, and yams. The yams were missing because the other worker thought o said greens. I wasn’t upset because it was just a misunderstanding. ALL the food was tantalizing, but the dressing really surpassed my expectations. Also, the portions were more than enough. Visit! You won’t be disappointed!!!

was refer by someone

By LAWRENCE S |

It was horrible food the place needs to b shut down. Its in poor condition inside and out. There not putting the money back into the place on the up keeping. The restrooms r n .ad shape toilet paper roll was on the nasty floor and I had the splatters all that day. Food is to dam sweet. Will put you in a dietbetic coma my wife couldn't finish her food to sweet. The health department needs to shut it down. We drove a longway from AlvinTexas a waste of time. I would never ever go there again or refer anyone. Horrible

The best Soul Food ever...

By David W |

The best Soul Food ever. Huge portions; take the rest home for supper. Everything is Wonderful!

Great location, nice food, lots of people

By khall26581 |

We were in the area for a meeting and I wanted to take some co-workers out for a meal to celebrate. I picked this location and was not disappointed. My three colleagues were able to get their nice salads, fish sandwiches, and signature fried green tomatoes and although I thought we had a lot to talk about, once the food arrived, we were pretty silent. We sat outside and yes, it was pretty hot, but bearable. I would recommend indoors for those that don't like Texas heat and humidity. Food was great, atmosphere was great, location awesome, and wait staff was very attentive.

Southern Soul Food

By cocolaute |

I have been to Sweet Georgia Brown many times but this is the first time I've written a review. The food is absolutely delish. and the plates are hearty. There is enough for food on one plate for two people or enough for two meals for one person. They serve Pork chops, Smother Turkey Wings, Meatloaf (2 extra large slices) Bar-b-que beef, Smoked sausage, Fried catfish on Friday's and all the sides you could image. The dessert is usually a slice of cake the size of a small cake. The ambiance leaves something to be desired but the food is awesome! and the line is always out the door. so get there early!!!

Excellent

By Michele L |

Everything was awesome Love all the food The portions are huge Definitely worth the price I was there on business but I would definitely make the drive just to go back to Sweet Georgia Brown

Amazingly, Delicious Homecooked Southern Food!

By E N |

I have been to this location twice, and I must admit the food is really good. Some items taste just like my grandma or mom would make for our Sunday dinners. You will not be disappointed with the food, but maybe a little frustrated with the long lines and Texas heat. In my opinion, standing in a long line is a clear indication of good food in the building. The portion sizes are huge and the meats are moist and well seasoned. Give it a try! I'm glad I did.

Dublin Family

By SAM D |

We found out about this restaurant when we visited the music hall at the fair ground. Two of the employees there recommended Sweet Georgia Browns to us. It's what we were looking for. The employees were so nice and helpful to us very comforting. Now the food, let me see how to put this, it's full of soul and you know soul will fill you up and trust me you will have left overs. This food is amazing. You have to visit this restaurant. Thanks to the employees at Sweet Georgia Browns.

As close to home cooking as you're going to get!

By sty7mile |

I haven't been there since the remodel, but the food is always gooood! The service is okay, but the food is goooood. Get there early. Especially on Sunday. The line can go outside when it get's busy. You don't want to be in the hot sun.

Disgusting

By ChristeeZz |

Most disgusting food I've ever had. Place is nasty! Flavorless food! How do you mess up macaroni? NEVER AGAIN! Took 3 bites and then walked out. YUCK

THE BEST I HAVE EATEN

By Debbie P |

I have finally found this place that I had been hearing about for such a long time!!! I live in Sulphur Springs TX and find myself in Dallas often!!! I wanted a place to eat that was just as good as my cooking, and I HAVE NOT BEEN DISSAPOINTED!!! I have gone over there twice already and today I had my daughter go by there and pick up a plate for me!!! OH MY GOD!!!! This food is the best!!! Today I realized that it was better than mine!!! Huge portions and very well seasoned!!! I have feed three people off of my plate!! Oh my Lord!!! Make you give God some glory for real!!!!!!!! Pastor Deborah Gilmore

Definatly worth the drive from Carrollton..

By MommyinDallas21 |

This place is AMAZING! I am a white girl but i love me some soul food from SGB! I have tried Michelles before but that doesn't even compare to SGB. It is a little run down restaurant but the people inside are so sweet and caring. Some of them look a little on the rough side but they are excellent at their job. I believe Georgia herself rang my order in the first time I went and she was a delight to chit chat with. She really takes pride in her restaurant and the food they serve. All the times I've went I've always gotten it togo that way i can go to the house and change into comfy clothes cause you will definatly need to unbutton your pants as the serving sizes are HUGE! I only have a family of three including me and my daughter is about to be 4 but we always get 2 dinner plates as the drive is so far. We always have left overs but they are just as great re-heated as they are fresh! I do suggest if you want to go on Sunday then wear comfy shoes and get there early as you will have a line out the front door. Well worth the wait though. I even went during the week and there was a line. People know about this place for a reason! This is definatly not the normal BBQ this is soul food! Broc and rice cass is to die for. As well as the greens. I'm a white girl and i love their greens. A must have every time. Their German Chocolate cake is amazing as well. It's made fresh daily. HOMEADE not store bought package stuff! When we went the drink machine was broken but they had huge containers on a table with Tea and Lemonade. We tried the Lemondade and before i made it out of the restaurant (to go order) i needed a refill. My 3 year old wouldn't give me my cup back! LOL My only tip is do not try this place if your on a diet or can't handle greasy food! Don't let the location scare you. Well worth it in all aspects! Keep it up SGB! i'll def be back. My boyfriend is already talking about going there on V-day night! i'm hungry now from this review!

Pretty good

By Ken H |

This is a well talked about and popular spot for soul food. I have been here a few times. The food is pretty good. Not as good as I expected. But alright.

Can't get enough

By exoticmocha2000 |

I fell in love the moment I tasted it. This is THE BEST SOUL FOOD PLACE, EVER! Slyvia's in Harlem or any other famous soul food cooking has nothing on this place. A visit to Dallas is not complete until I have made my way to Sweet Georgia Brown. I talk about it so much that the day before I leave for New York, I pick a a couple of plates, freeze them and bring it back to share with friends and family. There was one instance that the owner (so kind) found out what I was doing and gladly and proudly sold me small pans of prepared dishes that were not cooked. He told me temperature and timing on dishes. It was amazing. If you are in Dallas, try it!!!!!

Good Ribs & Sausage

By tenisheat2016 |

We had a taste for down home cooking so we took the long drive from McKinney to Dallas to get our fix. We ordered the Rib and the Polish sausage dinner with green, mac & cheese, candied yams, pinto beans and topped it off with a slice of pound cake. The drive was well worth it.

Super Soul Food

By DeShae |

A lot of food, taste great, and gun joy going there every time I'm in Dallas. Not to fond of the collard greens and mac an cheese, but the food is still pretty good. A soul food fix when you can't get it at home.

Good home cooking

By Guillarne G |

The first time my family and I went here the line was not that long, we came here right after church. I had smothered Turkey wings, dressing and greens. Everything tasted good. The meat loaf is good, however, the sauce on it is a bit to sweet. Go as early as you can to avoid the long line.

A Sweet Gem!

By Adrienne M |

Sweet Georgia Brown is such a Gem in Dallas. If you want true southern cooking, go! There's nothing like it! Even if you're vegetarian, there's something for you. SGB's is only 10-mins south of downtown Dallas.

Great Soul Food Restuarant

By Hybrid1 |

This place serves up huge portions of great tastining soul food. The ribs I had were excellent. They were tender, juicy and the meat fell right off the bone. The mac n cheese was heavenly, the yams are so good you will think that you are eatting a dessert and the greens were seasoned to perfection. Try to save some room for the peach cobbler if possibe. What a great finish to an excellent meal!

Slamming!

By czbriggs |

I recently visited Sweet Georgia Brown's about a month ago. It was on a Saturday and luckily we got there just before the crowd (around 3:30 pm). The line was out the door! The cabbage was so good! I would love to have the receipe. The ribs, sauage, greens and black-eyed peas were all wonderful. My friend and I ended up tasting each other's food. The only problem was that if you don't ask for bread, they seem to 'forget' to give it to you. The staff also seemed to have some problems determining who's turn it was to go on break. This caused a slow-down in the extremely long lines, while they quibbled. Otherwise, I would definitely go there again, I live in Mansfield so it's almost a 50 mile drive there one-way. But the next time I am in Oak Cliff, I will go there again for the exceptional food.

Grandmamas. Soul food.

By Ramson |

That’s all that need to be said. Hood area and atmosphere but if you remember the south and them gin joint Sunday soul food meals. This place got it and there servings are enough for two grown men to eat twice off of.

Large portions

By BigTiff2 |

The large portions can feed three people at one time. It was pricey too! The food was good though. The service was good also.

One of the best since early 90's!!

By cousinD |

I've been going here since they opened the doors! I've never seen anyone leave here empty! One plate can feed two people (and that's their standard)!

Can convert vegetarians far and wide.

By Nisant |

If you live in or near Dallas go ASAP. The most amazing BBQ and sides I have ever had in 38 years.

An average soul food restaurant

By denisx |

Stopped in for Bar-B-Q, didn't find any. Maybe it's just a cultural thing but when the server at the cafeteria line said they didn't have pulled pork I knew I was in the wrong place. The sides: were good and very large. So large, in fact, the serve your food in a togo box since there is no way you will finish your meal.

Soul food so good you will slap your mama, NOT a buffett

By ciscokid1970 |

This is a perfect example of a greasy spoon restaraunt, one of a kind home cooking with generous portions and recepies made with love. If you are in the mood for collard greens, sweet potato caserole, brocolli rice and cheese, fried pork chops and more this place will warm your soul. The ribs and brisket are also very good. Despite what the name says it is not a buffett. But no worry, they place like 3 pounds of food on a "to go" styrofoam. I have never been able to eat half of what they serve, I take it home make a dinner and breakfast out of it. I normally get a 1 meat plate...about $13 gets you 4 big pork ribs or tasty brisket, corn bread and 2 large sides. These are the best collard greens I have ever eaten. Normally I hate sweet potato, but this sweet potato is sooo good I could take a bath in it. It is a long drive to the South West part of Dallas, It is in a older building located in a part of town that scares some people away. I have eaten there many times and never worried for my safety. This is true soul food, just drive back quickly before you get sleepy.

Just good.

By Regina H |

Food was good as always. Got a veggie plate. I couldn't finish it...didnt need meat the greens were full of meat!

Excellent!!!!

By Blue Crab |

I must admit, I was a little nervous going into this place as it was in a rough part of town. Put that part aside, it's worth it. I routinely visit this place when I'm on business in the DFW area. Sometimes you have to go to the hole-in-the-wall places in bad areas for the best food; this was the case here. The employees were friendly, and I struck up a conversation with another local neighborhood guy in line upon him asking me "so you like you some soul food, huh?". They have some of the best Southern "soul food" I've had. I'd drive all the way across the Metroplex to visit this place. Good hometown people cooking awesome food. I can't wait to go back; and yes, they stuff your take-out box so full, it weighs about 10 lbs. and you have enough for a full 2nd meal. Get the ribs and mac n' cheese!

Always great food

By Miss W |

My ATF soulfood spot to eat at in Dallas! When Visiting Dallas and in need of some home cooking this is where I go to not only is the food great but they give me enough to eat on the next day if I like.

This Is Not Your Typical Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant

By RickPerry |

The Good ————- 1) Great food 2) Great food portions 3) Great customer service 4) Great cultural ambiance The Bad ———— 1) Parking can be a challenge 2) Long waiting in line 3) Not in a convenient location for North Dallas customers 4) The menu items are pricey so bring extra cash or be ready to swipe that credit card but the food is worth every penny! As a meat eater I could live off of their vegetable plate for the rest of my life! Yes, the food is that good! By the way, the word “catfish” is misspelled on your menu.

I plan my trips to Dallas around SGB!!

By Meesha C |

I had heard about this restaurant a long time ago, but just started going to SGB about 3 yrs ago when I lived in Dallas. Once a month, my friends and I would plan a Saturday to eat there. We would starve ourselves all day, just so we could enjoy all the food they give you. I've lived in OK for 2 yrs now, and every time I go back to Dallas, a trip to SGB is on the agenda. If I take anyone w/ me, it's a must that I take them there. When my family in OK find out I'm going, they have me bring plates back for them, even if it's going to be a couple days before they get it. The portions are huge (3 full meals), and the taste makes you wanna "slap ya mama!!" I love SGB, and everyone I know does too.

Soul food that really feeds your soul

By jaleesa r |

This is the best soul food restaurant I've found in Dallas. Yes, it expensive per plate, but one plate can easily feed two adults or 3 children. The portions are huge! I ate half my food in one sitting and I looked like I barely ate anything on my plate. The ribs are to die for!! Seriously fall off the bone. The mac & cheese is my favorite side, so good!! I definitely recommend!!!
