Great Korean BBQ in PDX

By John M |

We returned to Toji for the 2nd time. The first visit was for lunch and this time for dinner. The lunch service was a little slow but dinner service was fine. Each table is set with its own bbq grill and you order the raw meat which you grill to your own liking. We had a combo plate of beef, pork and chicken breast. The meat was delicious and there were lots of Korean appetizers. The miso soup and spicy tofu soup were delicious.

One of my favorites in Portland

My wife and I have been coming to this place for 16 years and have never been disappointed. Always the same people working, always clean and always great, great food. Enjoy a BBQ in the middle of your table, it’s an experience you won’t forget!

A random search online led to a great lunch

By Kristi R |

My hubby, friend and I were in the area after having done a tea tasting. We Googled for nearby restaurants and came up with Toji. I had only been to a Korean bbq place once, and our friend not at all. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Drink refills could've been a little faster, but that's a minor complaint. The meat and all of the sides that come with the meal were delicious, and we were all quite full by the time we got to the last of the food. No way were we asking for seconds! It's not the cheapest place to eat (bbq starts at $20/person and you all have to get the same meal package), but I thought it was worth the money. We don't have any Korean places in central IL, so it was a treat for us.

Always a great lunch with friends

When I lived on the east side my wife and I were regulars at Toji. Since moving downtown we go less often but yesterday was a nice day so we walked from downtown to Toji and as usual we’re greeted by a friendly smile and a welcome back. Toji has the most consistently good Korean BBQ of any place I have ever been. The tables are clean and the BBQ is fun and easy to use. Do not pass up on the BBQ platters, that is why you go to Toji!

Really Good Korean BBQ

By mattw922 |

We didn't know what we were doing since we had never been to a Korean BBQ before, but the waitress was very kind and helped us all the way through. The meats were quite tasty. It seemed a little pricy, especially considering we were doing most of the work.

Very Fun time!

Outstanding Korean BBQ. Brought co-workers from Korea to this establishment for dinner in Portland. When I asked how does this compare to what they will get in a restaurant where they live 1 said outstanding, the other said it was good. You can take that as you will. It is a fun time being able to cook your dinner in front of you but be aware it is hot, so mind the little ones. There are a ton of choices and the beer selection is extensive. They do offer several varieties of Soju, which I am told that is the drink of Korea. All in all a fun time!

Delicious veggie rolls and more

By cmaynard |

I’m from outside Chicago Illinois and it’s Thanksgiving day in Portland, Oregon. Enjoyed with family a wonderful feast here. We decided to try Korean BBQ, glad we did. We cooked selected cut of steak and fresh cut platter of raw vegetables, it was wonderful. I had seaweed soup with brothy vegetable base, fresh cup of ginger tea, and the vegetable seaweed rolls, delicious. We had fresh side dishes that came with BBQ meal. Thank you.

Not bad, not great.

Two of us ordered the bento and one ordered soft tofu soup. The food was nothing special, at least not compared to our favorite Korean restaurant in Oakland, CA. We were a little disappointed with the banchan (little plates of savories served with most Korean food), not the variety we are accustomed to. But, again, everything was wholesome, just not particularly memorable or special. Am I a bit picky? Maybe.

Amazing quick find!

My husband and I are in Portland on a short business trip and needed a quick bite to eat, him having been to Korea before had a taste for it so I typed in Korean and this jewel popped up. We went and we're both in love. He's reminiscing now, yes I'm typing and eating. I didn't want to forget to rate and review. The food is amazing. You won't regret it. Also my husband says, "If you see the local Korean Community eating there it must be good."I say it was great!

Cooked just the way you want it!

I've been here twice now and have never been disappointed. It can be a bit expensive depending upon what you order but you will not go away hungry. Choose the all you can eat option or be more selective on the type of meat(s) you want. The grill is in the middle of the table and they bring you your raw meat on a plate with tongs and siccors for cutting it up. Various condiments like sauces and assorted kimchi, bean sprouts, cucumber, potatoes, onion, etc. as well as lettuce for wraps. Rice comes with it to round off the meal. I didn't try the desserts as I ate too much of the meat! The restaurant is pretty basic for ambiance. Parking off street or on Hawthorne.

Great food. Any of the BBQ dishes are good. Bibimba is great. Little pricey though.

Average at best

By Thaiguy2 |

We came in late on a Sunday as it was one of the few restaurants still open. The banchan were all subpar at best with very off tasting kimchi and other uninspiring tasting side dishes. Prices were very expensive for what you get, though the portions were very filling. Meat seasoning was alright but on the sweet side. It seemed fresh. Service was good and attentive. My primary rating as average is because of price and taste.

Fabulous find!!

Four of us went here for dinner, and we really enjoyed it! Fantastic meat, good selection on menu, tasty side dishes and helpful staff. We will definitely go back!

If its not Korean and especially if its not Korean BBQ don't call it that

By Ralphr88 |

A Korean BBQ is an event combining service, timing, ingredients, flavours, and preparation that Koreans all over the world are rightly proud of. Toji has none of this to match the fat bill. In fact its an embarrassment to Koreans. Save your money and make sure to find a genuine Korean BBQ restaurant to enjoy the experience.

Plan your visit carefully

All you can eat options are full of meat. But they are spendy especially if you are with guests that do not eat much! We were a party of 8 with only 1 grill. Cooking surface was small and kept going out. Which made it difficult to keep up. Appetizers were excellent, included sauces and go withs were great. Service was very good. Meat was tender and flavorful. First time attendees read the rules. Do not order more than you can eat. Would go again with fewer people and more meat eaters.

Good first impression

Korean BBQ is not a cuisine I have had the pleasure of trying much of. The Toji Korean Grill was a good first move. While the menu is a bit intimidating for someone unfamiliar with the dishes, that's probably a big plus for those who want variety. The food was fresh, tasty, and it's always fun to cook your own food at the table. Service in the beginning was a little lacking, but in the end we felt they were very accommodating and gave us a fun new experience. We came for lunch and learned that you can't take left overs. Also, don't grill up more meat than you can eat--- they have an interesting policy about left over 'cooked' food. Now we have a new place to let friends/family know about for when their in town.

New experience

Tabletop grilling is fun! At this restaurant you can order standard Korean dishes off the menu or order plates of raw meat , poultry and seafood that you can grill at the table. Lots of fun. Good service. Definitely will return

Goof Korean food and good service

By Robatkone |

It's was a pleasant surprise, good food at lunch, good service, great banchan, overall quite pleasant, if there are two of you you can have an all you can eat buffet for an hour wish I had someone with me because the bar b que smelled excellent, had the beef soup, as good as Korea, more than I could eat, a little bit salt kwould have been perfect which is good if you wish less. Will be going back with two or three.

For "West siders" this is worth the trip.

Our family made the long drive across town going from Beaverton to East Portland to give Toji a try and I'm glad we did. Service was prompt and the environment is better than many other Korean BBQ which have huge fan hoods and fire sprinklers. They didn't have any of that which softened the atmosphere. The side were tasty and the beef bulgolge was fantastic. What's better is it is all you can eat. We had a fantastic evening.

A wonderful experience

I visited the Toji Korean Grill with a friend who had just returned from a trip to Korea. We had one of the all-you-can-eat grill options. You choose a variety of meats to grill and it comes with a number of side dishes to complement the meat such as shredded daikon radishes, fish cakes, kimchi, and others. You grill the meat at your table. It was fun and delicious. Definitely going back soon.

Great food, well presented

Since I found this place, I have been twice already for lunch. Both times, I have had the Dosirak, a kind of Korean bento lunch. It comes in a sectioned dish with salad, tofu pieces, a posticker, dippiing sauce and the meat dish of your choice. There is also a small dish of rice. I have had this dish twice, once with chicken and the other with beef. Excellent both times.Making it even better are the many small side dishes that accompany the lunch. Some. like kimchi, are spicy, others not so much. All are very good. This is what makes it special: the attention to this detail. My friend had the Soondubu jigigae (sp?) soup and said it was great. Service was excellent. It is in a very basic setting with tables and chairs. At each table there is a gas grill to cook some of the meats that come with some of the lunches you can order. These are usually for two or more people and offer a series of dishes along with the meat. I will do this next time I go with friends.

Way expensive and poor service

By Greencop |

Food here is very expensive and service was very Poor. We walked into restraunt and waited 30 minutes without employees even making eye contact with my family. They just had a clip bord that ask to sign in. We waited for over 30 minutes with two Young kids. We were ready to walk out without eating. Not a good place for family. Also when we received our food the portions were way too small for what they charge. The prices are way over priced.

Really nice Korean bbq...

Excellent Marinade on the meat

By Christine H |

We were travelling from Washington and were spending the weekend in Portland. This restaurant popped up in our GPS options for Asian Cuisine so we we stopped by since we were fairly close to it. You cook your own meat over the heated grill in the center. Appetizers were plentiful and delicious. The place was packed, but we still had exceptional service. It is pretty expensive though, but I still would go back if I could. The marinade was excellent!! So yummy. The waiter was very friendly too. Only thing we didnt like was that the vegetable soup we ordered just tasted like garlic soup and was overwhelming and we couldnt eat it. Other than that, 2 thumps up.

Enough to eat till we were filled up to the top

By RagTopGuy |

We went here with our family, and got an all you can eat option C. It was priced per person, and as long as we were able to eat what was brought, the food never stopped. This is a typical Korean Grill house, where they bring you the raw foods, and you grill them up at your table. They do charge an additional fee if you don't eat all the food they bring .So, towards the end of the meal, order light items, like the seafood. The Bulgogi was wonderful, but there are many selections of meats you can choose. They come in orders of four at a time, but you can change what you want with each reorder, till your full. Great family place to eat,but not if your in a hurry, then order from the kitchen.

Delicious and fun for couples or family!

By Rebecca B |

We are enthusiastic repeat customers after first visiting several years ago! We order multiple marinated proteins to grill and have also enjoyed their soups and wraps. Everything has been delicious, and the only thing wanting was more table space for all the food! This is a super fun experience for a couples date, a family gathering, or to entertain visitors. Highly recommend!

A great experience with character! ! !

By Terry D |

This was our first time at Toji. It was fun figuring out what to have for dinner so we went around to other tables and asked them what they liked about their dinner. Funny thing. The same thing happened to us as new patrons came in for the very first time. It was fun because you got to cook your dinner the way you wanted to on the built in grill right there at your table. I really felt the dinner was reasonably priced. They don't have an extensive bar menu but what the heck we didn't go there to drink.

Busy Busy Busy Restaurant

By JetEats |

We came here on a Saturday night to enjoy a meal with the family. Good thing we had a reservation, otherwise, we would have waited in a long line. The resto only had 2 servers that night. And by the time we left 2 hours later, there was still a line. Food was good and was an enjoyable experience because of the open bbq grill in each table. The servers were nice and tried really hard to accommodate everyone, but took 5 requests to get a to go bag and our check. Will try again and hope service will be better next time.

Authentic korean cuisine

By mokemo |

The service was great! The food was seasoned and time perfectly. All the little extras - sauces, lettuce wrap, extra side dishes make a delicious, satisfying meal. We had Kalbi (ribs), Bibimbab (rice with vegetables), mandoo guk (dumpling soup), pajeon (scallion pancakes).
