San Antonio's Best?

By Stephen C |

I don't live in San Antonio, but if I did, Taco Haven would be at the top of my list for Tex-Mex. It's well worth going a mile or so from the Riverwalk. I ate there three times in one week, and enjoyed it each time.

Fun and classic Mexican food

By Wayne H |

we had a group of 20 and only a 15 Morin wait on Sunday morning but it was raining. We were not disappointed. Food was good and had the great Tex mex flair to it. Breakfast tacos galore with eggs adn all types of mixtures.

Unusually just ok

By srvtx |

This visit must have been an off day. I have been in the past and it was very good. Saturday morning, place wasnt very crowded. Service was great. Migas were just ok. My wife decided to have a burger. Hmm..no so great. Similar to a football stadium burger. I will give them another try at some point. Wouldnt cross them off your list just yet.

Breakfast tacos

Never had Mexican food for breakfast and it was good! My husband loved the country sausage burrito. The staff was very sweet. Fun eating like a local.

Best place

This was the best little place! The food was fantastic. All fresh and authentic. Plenty of food for the price. Friendly service. I highly recommend this place if your in san antonio.

Best Tex-Mex

By Dino K |

Arriving in San Antonio at just about dinner time, my son & his girlfriend were showing me how big the city had gotten. I was starving, they had a plan and took me to this place. I just loved it!! The food was fresh, hot and filling. The side of guacamole I ordered was enough for the 3 of us and then some. Great food wonderful ambiance, very reasonable prices. Well worth the trip.

Go for the migas!

By Megan K |

My husband and I had brunch at Taco Haven as we were heading out of town. We had to wait for about 15 minutes for a table. Chips and salsa to start were okay but our main course of migas was excellent. I got the version without meat (simple version of eggs, cheese, and tortilla strips) but my husband ordered the meat option. Served with very fresh and yummy tortillas. Would have liked to try the puffy tacos but no vegetarian version was offered. Extremely reasonable prices in a casual environment.

HORRIBLE SERVICE

By Dominic J |

HORRIBLE SERVICE: I entered and a server showed me where to sit. I was seated for over 15 minutes before a busser finally acknowledged me and offered a menu. In the mean time, several other patrons entered, their orders were taken, and they were served within the 15 minutes before the busser acknowledged me. For the next 5-7 minutes, no server approached. In total, I was there over 20 minutes waiting for a server. I strongly suggest you not visit this location. The restaurant has a complete lack of structure and lack of management.

So Delicious! Don't pass this place up!

We were only staying in San Antonio for one night. We wanted a quick bite to eat so my brother-in-law mentioned Taco Haven. We are SO glad he did! My husband and I both ordered the "Ralphie's Special" which is 3 tacos with your choice of beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, etc.. The price? $6.50. I chose the beef and my husband the chicken. As you can see by my picture, the tacos are not small by any means. They are large. We each ate 2 tacos and were full, but it was so good we just HAD to eat the 3rd taco. Although we were miserably full, it was worth it. The salsas, the taco shell, everything is fresh and homemade. The food is great and cheap! Whether you are in town for a visit or you live in San Antonio, this place is a must to eat at!

Great breakfast taco choices. The sauces are great--not too hot, but certainly not bland. When you want a Tex-Mex breakfast this place delivers. It's idea if you like the hot stuff or have a more mild taste buds. There's something for everyone even if Tex Mex isn't your thing. Great service with smiles.

Taco Haven is Taco Heaven!

By AliBug |

We were leaving our hotel one morning in search of a place to eat. The valet at the hotel recommended Taco Haven and we are so glad he did. We arrived around 11 and there was a small wait. We were patient and really only had to wait for 10 minutes, not bad, because this place was PACKED at 11a.m. on a Saturday morning! We sat down and were served immediately. The food came out surprisingly fast considering the crowd they had and it was scrumptious. If you're planning a visit to San Antonio soon, don't miss this place. I believe it should be a city icon.

It's Haven alright

This restaurant is full of people enjoying food ... what a fun place. These guys/gals know food and service. Enjoy amigos!

Stumbled on this place by accident, will seek it out next trip!

By Dee W |

Was driving near our hotel looking for a taco trailer or something authentic to eat at before we headed out of town. Everything else was closed in this neighborhood and I found this place strictly because it was the only thing open. They have great breakfast tacos at a great price! Atmosphere looked like it could be a fun place later in the day. Locals seemed to love the place, too.

More like Taco Heaven!

By Ylaní H |

San Antonio natives are picky and myself being one, have no complaints about this food. When grandma isn't available this is a perfect substitute, for a lack of better words. Food so good, fresh and authentic.

Might be the best breakfast deal in the city

By Carlos |

Great breakfast tacos, and surprisingly inexpensive. There is a wait, but as everyone walking out the door told us, "It is worth the wait". I appreciate any restaurant that makes authentic homemade style tortillas. Even in San Antonio, they are hard to find.

YUMMY

By angela r |

This was my favourite taco place in San Antonio & my husband’s 2nd fav. Great choice on the menu and just felt really authentic. We had a copilot of tacos each, mine were beef fajita and chicken fajita on corn taco. Really delicious and fresh. Staff were attentive and happy ! Would definitely go back

Good food, Long wait.

By LouisandMarie |

The food was good and we had a few Micheladas but I felt like servers and people in charge were all over the place but not attending to tables. Hopefully in the future there will be better focus.

Good not great

By ElvisAndrus |

A longer wait than should have been for a takeout breakfast taco. Smallish and plain. Nice ambience but one very odd thing. The cubical for the toilet in the men’s washroom had the shortest walls I have ever seen. A six foot man standing at the urinal could look you in the eye as you did your business.

Better for breakfast

By HappyCamper917 |

I love this place for their tasty Tex-Mex breakfast tacos made with homemade tortillas and filled with fluffy eggs, cheeses and grilled meats. I thought I'd try them at lunch and was very disappointed. I had a Ralphie's three taco special- had to get the same meat in all the tacos:( Then the corn tortillas were deep fried and dripping with oil. The cabbage slaw was tasty but the chicken had no flavor and had a lingering taste of yesterday's meat. I left sad but now know that it's best to just get breakfast next time.

Great breakfast choices

By Morog |

Everyone was happy with their choices! Huevo rancheros, breakfast tacos, Reggie's Special. Lots of energy, very simple, traditional food joint. I was surprised how good the coffee was!

Great Food and Service; One of my favorites!

By Irene R |

It's no secret, I love to eat. I enjoy sitting down to a good meal at a nice clean restaurant that gives great service. Taco Haven has a great balance of menu selection, price, service and ambiance. This is one of those places where you will want to go back time and time again to try something else on the menu just to find that everything on the menu is absolutely delicious and amazing. The staff is the friendliest I have ever encountered, personable and they treat you like a friend would that was serving you a meal in their home. Try it, you will not be disappointed.

Great food and atmosphere

By Michael B |

We were in town for an event at the Alamo-dome... we told the cab driver we had to be back in about an hour, so he suggested Taco Haven on Presa street. We got there about 7:30 on a Sat night... and luckily no wait. For being close to downtown, this place was not too crowded and the prices were great! All of the food tasted home made, and we are very picky when it comes to Tex-Mex. My wife is Hispanic and grew up with homemade beans, rice, tortillas, etc... so we judge Tex-Mex restaurants on if these things are homemade... and they were. I had the Carne Asada, which was very tender. My wife had the Taco Salad, the bowl was homemade and delicious. Our daughter had the enchiladas, which were also homemade and excellent. Now to top it off, there was live music... so we enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the music... and we were in and out in under an hour... perfect! We will definitely be back when we travel to San Antonio again.

Little gem discovered by accident

By Angel C |

While attempting to locate another advertised gem, we tired from the long walk, and turned back to the welcoming Taco Haven. The service was outstanding - local fare, no tourists other than us! Prices unbelievable! 2 drink each (4), plus a full order of over-the-top Fajita nachos - bill: $15.00 We will be back! And the walk was refreshing before and after!

Terrible Tacos

By Maricela G |

Ordered Crispy taco plate and the shells were stale. Yuk! The beans were just ok but the Spanish rice was just bad. I won't be going back.

Authentic

By Becky_Pultz |

This little out of the way place is a breakfast/lunch gem. We saw many local police, firefighters, and other public servants eating here. That is always a good sign of yummy meals to come. Breakfast was South of the Border delicious and adorable.

Mui Bien!

By sfron81 |

Stopped at this great place by chance while taking a drive around S.A. Just a very pleasant surprise. Just what we wanted....a local taco spot with unique, local cuisine. Service was outstanding. Very friendly staff handling a large Saturday lunch crowd. Tacos were just great, but there's a full Mexican menu. Will go here again on our next trip to S.A.

Best Mexican Food Ever

By BOMNOLA |

Great Food. Great Service. Great Price. Had Fish Tacos and Shrimp Tortas. Both the dishes were outstanding.

Spicy breakfast

By DarrellllerraD |

Can't go wrong with a bit of spice for breakfast. Eggs, potatoes, tortilla and sauces, topped off with a queso taco and a chocolate milk. A very very affordable place to eat breakfast especially if you are on a budget the four of us are for under $10 per person! Great service and really great food.

Eat where the locals eat...

By Fernando Tamayo |

You won't see this place on any touristy maps. It is located just south of downtown (Southtown) prices are minimal, and food is plentiful. Couldn't even finish my plate. A true San Antonio treasure, lots of history here. Expect a wait on the weekends, but with plenty of seating it should be minimal.

Lunch....

By Lovey602 |

I had the waitress order for me........ I loved the corn tortillas quesadillas : ) Salsa was tasty! Will return and recommend the prices are perfect.....

British tacos

By Brandon V |

got 2 tacos and a french toast. Came out to 25 dollars, the french toast was burnt, the tacos were cold and flavorless. Gentrified trash salsa, and crazy taco combinations made for the spiceless folk. This place is not good enough to be open this long, the fact that its in the middle of generational homes and they charge alamo heights prices is also a big FU to real san antonians.

Nice Place

By Rene P |

Came here for an early lunch with the family. This place is very small but good. I personally tried some of their tacos. (Tripa and puerco) The tacos were well proportioned and tasted pretty good. The prices were very reasonable. I loved their sweet tea. This is a good place for authentic Mexican food.

Excellent tacos, great service, attractive surroundings.

By ElvisTaco |

Large menu, not just tacos, with the usual suspects, but also some more interesting items. Not trendy, nor hip, just great food. Migas with chorizo was outstanding. Huevos rancheros was good, with kick-ass salsa, and the beans and potatoes were tasty. Excellent service on a busy Sunday morning. Nice art on the walls.

Great Breakfast Taco

By George G |

A classic that we have been to many times. About time I wrote a review. Always excellent tacos that are full of whatever ingredient you order. Yes it is busy on the weekend but the service is always excellent with the wait staff helping everyone. If you are in San Antonio on business be sure to search this please out! I took a colleague here for breakfast on his first day in town. We ate breakfast here three days in a row. It is that good!

Food, service and atmosphere were just right.

By KeithAlanJones |

Just gorged myself on barbacoa, fried potatoes and coffee. Excellent breakfast. Great service. Time for a nap.

Weekend Fun!

By txflygirl |

Spent the evening enjoying some live music while watching our Spurs! Drinks were great, food was good. I love queso but did not enjoy theirs. Love this place! Definitely worth visiting!

Super busy with good food

By Christinashawaii |

My husband and I were told about this place by the valet manager at our hotel. He said it's a locals dive and they have good breakfast. We got there around 9:30 or 10 and omg it was busy. Our server was pretty attentive, no complaints. The food was perfect to wake up to. I got the hevos rancheros and I think my husband got the migas...i think. Anyways, it was a great, lively atmosphere with a lot going on and good filling food. I absolutely recommend.

Find this place, fast!

Huge portions. Perfect breakfast tacos. Well worth the wait and finding this neighborhood gem. A must when in SA!

Go early and get some of this!

By Ironman09 |

Taco Haven is, by far, one of the top 5 San Antonio restaurants for breakfast tacos and authentic TexMex food. I can’t vouch for all their food other than the ham, egg,& cheese taco, and the miga’s. WOW! Their tortillas are warmed up perfectly. We were greeted quickly by a friendly smile. The food came out fast and we enjoyed every last bite. The manager asked how we liked the meal when we paid. This is a family run restaurant that has been central to their community. Please go here to experience outstanding food and wonderful service. If you go, show up early so you can get a table.

This is a very popular place to go for Mexican food near the Downtown area.

By Timeshare V |

We were looking to have some good Tex Mex while in San Antonio. One person recommended Taco Haven. We were greeted happily when we entered this little restaurant to have lunch. Everyone was friendly. Our group of five ordered different food items. The food that arrived was plentiful. The prices were reasonable. The food was average tasting.

Loved the Tacos!

By Tamara B |

What a great find! This old-style Tex Mex place was three blocks from the house we were renting. One of the best things is that it is open quite early for breakfast. Great menu of options and everything that we had was great. Excellent stuffed tacos. It's a family-run restaurant and the staff and gentleman at the cash register were all really nice. Highly recommend it for a well-priced, good meal.

Hidden gem very good food

By iris k |

Looking for affordable good breakfast and found taco haven. Only con is how busy it gets, but that just lets you know how good the food is.

Best Mexican breakfast plate

By TexasZs |

The barbaco is well seasoned and the papas con chile are amazing. The plate also comes with refried beans, eggs any style and 2 small cheese quesadillas. The flour tortillas are thick and homemade! The chips and salsa are also very good. The salsa is runny and warm and chips are thick and fresh. Be warned the bloody Mary's are super spicy. A few flys around the place and no matter what time you go it's always busy. Don't go if you're in a rush.

Delicious Breakfast

By Tessjoy83 |

We walked to Taco Haven from the Riverwalk for breakfast. It was a pretty far walk, so we rented the B-cylce stationed right outside of the restaurant for a ride back. The food was delicious. Yummy fresh tacos. Not expensive either. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good tacos. The service was good.

try the puffy taco

By ray678 |

Long wait, but that is everywhere in the tourist areas of San Antonio so prepare. This place has traditional mexican food and some tex mex. WE ordered a wide variety of food and most was good but not great. We all agreed the puffy taco and the breakfast plates were good including the barbacoa and menudo. The place is somewhat run down but I think the food and am willing to try again.

Authentic Mexican Homestyle Experience

By A C |

When my family and I checked out of our hotel in downtown San Antonio we were met with numerous suggestions for breakfast. We thought we could narrow it down with finding some authentic Mexican cuisine, foolishly that was not the case. We attempted to go to La Villita Cafe, which was well reviewed and located downtown but the parking situation was such a nightmare we have up after 4 or 5 attempts. Resigning ourselves to having to keep our eyes peeled for a place, while looking online, out of nowhere on S. Presa Taco Haven appears. This restaurant was not on any of the top review sights we were looking at so we were a little skeptical, unsure if all we wanted were tacos. Walking into Taco Haven there wasn't many people for 9am on a Tuesday. We were seated right away by a nice and friendly staff, immediately ready to help us with suggestions and drinks. I cannot express enough how welcoming our waitress was, sprinkling her conversation with "mamas" and "papas" when talking to the individuals at the table. Each of us tried one of the suggestions that were given. Another welcomed surprise was that Taco Haven was not just limited to tacos! The menu is very extensive but not overwhelming. I ended up with the Reggie Special, which was made up of two eggs however you wanted topped with a spicy* ranchero sauce (*I personally cannot handle too much spice but others seemed to be very happy with the spice level), two small corn quesadillas which were filled with a delicious fresh mozerella (housemade?), on the bottom of those two quesadillas was a generous amount of melt in your mouth barbacoa, beside that was a spicy expertly crisped potatoes tossed in onions and peppers and finally perfectly seasoned refried beans. With the plentiful amount of food you are also served with a good amount of homemade mix of corn and flour tortillas. If you are not familiar or have ever had homemade tortillas there is no comparison to the store bought. That alone is worthy of a repeat trip. If they didn't have a group of grandmothers furiously making every item on the table I would be shocked. Everyone was beyond impressed and happy with everything. Even my mother who is one of the most harshest critics of any establishment was beyond pleased. All in all this was a great find that has locked in many repeat trips any time we come into town. This place deserves a visit if you want a bountiful amount of authentic Mexican cuisine, with top notch service at a nominal fee.

Best Breakfast in Downtown San Antonio

By Mateo067 |

Taco Haven a well known eatery serves up some of the best Tex-Mex in San Antonio and fantastic Huevos Rancheros since 1969. (45 years) The food is consistently good. Good homemade tortillas corn or flour. The waitress are very friendly and the food is out in a flash. Take it from me bypass the recommendation of your hotel concierge to go eat at Rosarios as I hear that they are getting kickback for sending customers, you will pay triple price for lame food.

Overhyped

By Jose M |

I like good Tex-Mex food, and I went to Taco Haven with high hopes. I had read some positive reviews of the place and it sounded like the real deal. First off, I went there on a Saturday night -- they had a live band playing with music so loud it hurt the eardrums. Not conducive to enjoying the food. Alas, there was no enjoyment to be had with the food either. Beans were mushy -- not refried -- and they lacked any taste. Rice was too salty, and the rest of the food was okay -- but not what I had been led to believe from the reviews I had read. So if you like a really loud place, with okay Tex-Mex food, this is the place to go.

Taco Haven is just so-so

By thecowboylawyer |

We came to Taco Haven on the recommendation of a San Antonio local. We programmed our GPS and found it (it's in a run down neighborhood on the south side of downtown San Antonio). The staff is very friendly, and we took a table near the window overlooking the street. The waiter was friendly and solicitous, but inept and forgetful. We ordered and our food came missing items we'd asked for. The salad we ordered came without several ingredients bragged about in the menu. How can you forget avocados? This restaurant felt like a hometown eaterie that survives because the locals like the owners. As far as food quality, competency of the staff, and diner satisfaction, it needs to step up the game. Also, focus on taste. So many of the dishes were just bland. Bland is not something fans of Tex Mex food want. It doesn't have to be firewater hot, but there has to be some flavor. I'd rate Taco Haven lower, but the staff were so friendly I don't want to slam them completely.

Good food, good service

By BigRobUTSA |

Good downtown spot for old school South Texas Mexican Food. Good menu selection, good prices, and good service. I had the Carne Guisada, my party had plates with eggs, potatoes, beans, and everyone was satisfied with their choices.

Amazing breakfast tacos

By Sunrise12 |

Finally I found great Mexican food in San Antonio! Just had lunch here on a weekend trip and left with a happy tummy! Order the chorizo and egg breakfast tacos on homemade flour tortillas and you will feel like you are in deep in the heart if Mexico. Minimal wait and good service also helped make this a great choice for an authentic Mexican meal. Will definitely return on my next trip to San Antonio!

Family owned business

Taco Hazard!

By Mike L |

I heard this place was a San Antonio must visit but endured a must avoid, at least for lunch. We had a party of 8 and were seated in about 10 minutes, not bad. Then we waited, and waited, and waited for the waiter to finally wait on us. Our order took a long time, about 20~30 minutes. Two of us ordered the Ralphie's Special, thinking they must be but were greatly disappointed. Both orders were cold and soggy, too much cabbage and my carnitas (pork) were under cooked, hence my title. I stopped eating for fear of trichinosis. The other person complained their beef order was dry. Everyone else thought it was average Tex-Mex food (we were all Texans of Mexican descent). One thing I did like was the coffee, at least my experience was not totally that bad. I have not experienced their breakfast but was told the food is great. After my first experience do not want to take that chance and will avoid it.

won't do that again!

By HappyCamper917 |

I'm sad to say that i've eaten at Taco Haven for the last time and won't recommend this place anymore. The family had breakfast this past Sunday and we all left with a bad feeling in our stomach. The omelette I shared with my daughter was over-loaded with cheese, had little flavor and grossly I was tasting it for many hours after I ate it. The potatoes were bland, barely grilled and were mealy and dry. Also you now have to pay for a bowl of chips and salsa. Won't be back next time!

Great Breakfast place

By Carla H |

Had breakfast there last week. Great service and authentic Mexican food. I ordered the Chilaquales? Several at my table had the breakfast tacos. Good value for the money. Located near the King William Historic district of San Antonio.
