As others have stated, the service is below average, and that is really too bad because the tacos are pretty good. I had the tacos grande with Mexican hot chocolate for dessert. The sauce is the key to giving the tacos a needed kick. The tortillas, cilantro and onions were all fresh. Gee, after much planning and anticipation, I really wanted to like this place more; especially after riding all of the way down from lower Manhattan to have a late weekday lunch. The service is just so indifferent and lacking in personality that it does not warrant a return visit IMO. I was just about the only one there and no one seemed to really care.

Large dining room, filled to the brim with locals at lunchtime. Good sign, not disappointed. Fried tortilla chips were brought with hand made guac, fresh radiahes and salsa verde. Excellent. Enchiladas Matamoros served with red sauce - large plate piled high with lettuce, fresh tomato and avocado slices, drizzled with sour cream. The red sauce is pretty darn spicy, I went through a half pitcher of water and still broke a sweat. In all respects this is a superior Mexican style restaurant with lots of local flavor. Outstanding.

This spot is affordable and offers a nice selection of authentic Mexican dishes. When i am seeking a low calorie meal, i order their ensalada de nopales (cactus salad) and there chicken soup with tortillas on the side. Frozen margaritas are a great value ( you only need one to jump start your evening)!

Excellent Mexican fare in the middle of Sunset Park Brooklyn. A wide variety of items, excellently prepared and quickly presented. Bring your own bottle(s) to enjoy throughout your meal. A great family restaurant! The setting is no frills, but clean and efficient.

We where looking for something different to eat after the holiday s, and decided to look for mexican restaurant. While doing a quick research we fpund out this restaurant was one of the best in Brooklyn and decided to give it a try. Margaritas were good, we try 6 different types of tacos and we decided the best ones were the carne enchilada and definitely the tripas one. Ambient is family oriented and menu have something for everyone. Prices are good and service was nice. Definitely coming back when in the mood for mexican food.

My friends and I enjoyed a delicious lunch in this nice Mexican restaurant last Saturday. The food was very authentic Mexican -the Mole Tamale was really good and the Taco de Carnitas I had was really tasty (I should have had 2)! Unfortunately, they don't seem to have alcoholic beverages - I would have liked a beer with my lunch. But I would like to go back and try more of their great food the next time I'm in the area.

Everything that we ordered was excellent: guacamole, tostados (chicken and pork), enchiladas (chicken, beef, mushroom), tamales, and tacos.

Staying in Sunset Park we were looking for somewhere nearby to eat, and this looked the liveliest. The place was really busy but plenty of servers so it didn't take long to get our drinks and food. The frozen margarita was excellent (and I tried a few others while in NYC - purely for comparison!) and the burritos and beef/pepper/rice combo we ate were really tasty. And all for a very reasonable price. If we'd been here longer I would have gone back again.

Went to this restaurant, ordered to take out, as usual, and when I got home part of the order had not been put in a bag. Called the place and was told to go get it. I did not go back and will not return.

I love the tacos. I come here often and the food is consistently delicious!!!!! the waitress are very attentive to your needs. my favorite taco is the crunchy beef intestine called "tripas" I think, haha!

A buzzing little spot & totally unpretentious. We had nachos (not terribly great), but the TACO's! Do yourself a favour & do the Super Size one, with the extra's & extra size! 2 will be more than enough for any hungry person. i had the carnitas one, it was juicy & the meat just melts in your mouth! Do yourself a favour & end with the Mexican hot chocolate - oh my goodness, I tear up every time I think about it. Really chocolatey, with fragrant spices to enhance the chocolate & the soft warming hum of chilli at the end! *crying*

I live on 48th and I have been coming here for years. Not once was I ever dissapointed. Great food for great price. There rice platers are delicious and very fresh. Its always packed in the weekends so go earlier.

When i visit New York, i buy 1/2 dozen to a dozen of Tamales to bring home to my husband. According to him, they are the best he has had since he lived in California. Very high praise from him. They have other wonderful food and I do eat there as much as I can , when in New York. Very nice atmosphere and good prices and staff

This is a small very down to earth Mexican restaurant in Sunset Park, Brooklyn that does indeed serve authentic Mexican food. It’s worth taking a trip here to have good food. The place is full of Mexicans, which is a good sign. If native Mexicans go to eat at this restaurant, it’s because they consider the food good. I’ve tried quite a number of Mexican restaurants; however Tacos Matamoros seems to be my favorite. It’s not too small, therefore it’s not clamped and it’s pretty clean, comparing it to other local restaurants in the area. Sunset Park is a neighborhood with one of NYC’s biggest Mexican population. Sometimes whenever I go there, I’m the only non-Mexican. Other times, I have seen a couple of people from other nationalities that I don’t think live in the area. I don’t live in Sunset Park, nevertheless I will drive there to have bona fide Mexican meals. I love their guacamole. It’s very good and tasty. Their tacos are excellent. I prefer their big tacos. The tostadas they serve are incredibly delicious. I’ve tried beef, shrimp & chicken; nonetheless, their chicken tostadas are scrumptious. I recently tried their tamales & they are amazing. I had their chicken tamale. They are a bit spicy, but then again, Mexican food is spicy. Eating at restaurants like Chillis, Chipotle or any of the other chain restaurants has nothing to do with the authentic food you’ll eat at Tacos Matamoros. Oh, recently they started serving Margaritas. I had a Margarita on the rocks & it’s as good as you can get in Mexico. The best part about it is that their Margaritas only cost $5 each and they are not watered down the way they are in most places. Sunset Park is not a great neighborhood to take a stroll because it is a poor neighborhood, however if you would like to have genuine Mexican food, you should go to this dependable restaurant and I’m sure you’ll love it.

The tacos are huge, beautifully presented and amazing! I also ordered plain nachos (which was on the menu - because I just didn't want any meat on the nachos) but it came with beef on it. We ended up keeping it anyway, and the waitress sent us chips and gua on the house as an apology. So sweet!

Six of us dined at Tacos Matamoros yesterday and none was/were (fight among yourselves grammaticians) disappointed. We shared two appetizers (guacamole and nachos) and both were excellent. Our six entrees sampled their entire menu: tacos, burritos, vegetarian dishes, fish, beef, and goat. Everyone was pleased with their selections. Although Tacos Matamoros serves margaritas and sangria, customers are permitted to bring their own beer. With a bodega less than a block away, we were able to buy two six packs of Mexican beers for much less than they would cost at a restaurant. Of the restaurants we checked out on an eight block stretch of 5th Avenue, TM also provided the nicest decor. Patrons included three-generation families, young people on dates, guys watching football of television, and parents with adult children. Most of the customers were of Mexican American descent which attests to TM's authenticity.

Mexican restaurants are a "dime a dozen" in Sunset Park area. We came here based on good reviews and were not disappointed. The quesidillas were excellent as was the Salmon burrito. There was a bit of a language barrier for non-Spanish speaking clients, but overall it was a good meal experience in a very nice atmosphere - however, definitely casual and not fine dining.

Some of my favorite tacos in the whole world.

We really enjoyed the food and the service was great! Food was authentic and wish it was in our hometown.

The food and service at Tacos Matamoros were excellent. None of us (four people) had any complaints about our food. Drinks, entrees and desserts were all good. I highly recommend this place for a nice, cozy dining outing. Casual but not slouchy.

On the day we visited it was packed--very good service for the number of full tables. The food was all fresh and flavorful--great fish tacos. Not a huge fan of the mole sauce on the enchiladas--but it was far better than what is usually found at restaurants in the US.

This is our first time eating at Tacos Matamoros at the recommendation of New York 9 best mexican restaurants listed by CBS - New York and we were not disappointed! The food was delicious and service was great. We had a carnitas burrito and chops/ribs in red sauce with rice and beans...Unfortunately, I was unable to have dessert but I'm hoping to go back soon and make sure I leave room for dessert!
Delicious and authentic food - lovely people
We discovered this place about a year ago and we've been several times on our own & with visitors. Located in Sunset Park in Brooklyn this is a family restaurant that is clearly popular with the local hispanic community - something I see as a very good sign. We've waited for tables but always been seated as promptly as circumstances allow and served with delicious food. This is not a posh place but the food is delicious, the drinks are tasty (yay mango margaritas!) and great value.
