Excellent Japanese "tapas"

By Julie C |

I call this "tapas" because the dishes are meant to be shared and are brought out one at a time. Our server was most helpful in guiding us as to how many dishes to order. We had two salads, served one before and one after a pork belly dish, which was just right to balance out the rich pork. We had a soba dish with stuff in it. We ordered the tofu doughnuts which were too dense and heavy for me but would make a nice breakfast. All in all, a unique and delicious experience!

Welcome additon, great food and service

This is our first visit to Takibi, a Japanese restaurant that offers great food and drink. Takibi is relatively new, and impresses by its great service and delicious food. It's not a traditional Japanese restaurant in that it doesn't only serve sushi, but a wide variety of dishes. It has a limited menu, with standouts that we tried being the Sashimi sampler, charcoal grilled Black Cod with a miso glace, and simmered pork belly. They also have salads and a variety of vegetables. There is an extensive and inventive drink menu and various choices of sake. Although the restaurant takes reservations, they have many seats available for walk-ins indoors, at the bar, and at their spacious patio. It's one of the best restaurants to open in Portland in a while. Try it.

Expected more

The menu sounded promising, however the chicken karaage was bland and needed some dipping sauce, the sashimi was ok and the beef carpaccio was great. Service was attentive, but all in all, we don’t think we will return

Nice Restaurant

Went for afternoon drinks. Restaurant has a nice decor with plenty of seating. Service friendly and efficient. Atmosphere excellent. The floor area includes a camping and clothes store. Rates typical for the area.

Delicious food in small portions

Stumbled on the restaurant by chance, after searching in vain online for a decent restaurant ! Takabi is not cheap, as you need to order at least 2 plates per person, but the food is delicious, the wine and sake are good and the service is attentive. Be aware that you will be automatically charged 20% gratuity.

Big Price Small Portions

The suggested meal is 4-5 dishes per person. It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure an average of $20 per dish adds up $100 per person. This was a dinner where you left wanting a snack in an hour. Once we got past the sticker shock we ordered a few sampler size dishes to share. We had the kale Cesar, hoba misoyaki, karaage, tori soba, and oysters. It’s not so much Japanese as it is fusion. It’s partnered with Snow Peak, the outdoor store. Go if you want a fusion experience and are not famished.

Expensive for the small bites you get

Our daughter took my wife and me to Takibi for dinner during our trip to Portland over Thanksgiving. The idea is to order several small bites each from the menu selections, The problem is that each small bite is expensive and by the end of the evening you have run up a large tab. My favorite was the tempura shrimp. There just was not nough of it to satisfy me.

Refined tastes

Excellent food! Freshest ingredients combined with delicate flavors! But: Tapas sizes Limited choices Accommodating with minor substitution This is definitely cuisine and not plain food and worse a visit!

Like a Home Staged for Sale

I need to start by saying that everything was flawless...the highest quality ingredients, the cooking was technically perfect. The meal was, in essence, excellent, and yet... Both of us found the omikase, which should be where you show off your chops, to be, well, soulless. Everything that was trotted out was precisely what you would expect, from the salad to the sashimi course to the fish courses to the end, nothing was anything less than beautifully prepared and nothing surprised us for a second, with the possible exception of the superb cod in white miso. It was like an android designed to please you. Perfect but somewhat empty. Several folks have commented that at these prices they were surprised to be hungry an hour later, and that, at lease, is not a problem with the tasting menu. But the timing of the service was off. The first several dishes took over 20 minutes to come out, and when an omikase is your signature, you need to have the timing mailed. Ultimately, if you want precisely what you expect, Takibi delivers at a high level. But in a city with so much creative Asian food, this is a Volvo, not a Ferrari...

Phenomenal

One of the best meals I have had in a long time. Nothing was less than excellent from the drinks to the meal to even the teas. You must save room for dessert and have the panna cotta.
