Worth a try

By Roary |

Our family was actually going to try another Vietnamese restaurant, but found out it was closed for the holidays, so we decided to go here instead. It was a nice surprise. Space is fairly modern, and clean. We had: - Beef Meatball Pho - Good for the kids. Big enought to feed two small children, and some of the largest meatballs I've ever seen in pho. - Hue Steamed Rice Plate - Beautifully presented, but because of how it was served, the steamed rice seemed a bit too soggy and the high proportion of rice made it a bit bland. - Central Broken Rice Crackers - Something I've never had before. Grilled pork was nicely grilled and rich with taste. I thought the rice crackers would be more light and crispy but turned out to be more tough and chewy, which made it a little less appetizing. Not bad, but not worth reordering. Service was friendly, and food came out quick. We came just before the lunch, so the restaurant filled up quickly, but we were never pressured to finish quickly. There's so many dishes to try, we'd consider coming back if in the area, considering the cost of the dishes were very reasonable.

Great atmosphere and food

By vamsally |

They got very tasty appetizers and lots of great entres. The atmosphere is great inside although outside is not much to look at. Parking is available although it can be rather full.

Keep going back

By Dorsey |

If you can find parking, this is an excellent Vietnamese restaurant to go to. They have Pho, rice, vegetarian, and more. The menu has more than 100 items, but it's just a change in chicken, beef, or sea food. If you have a large party of people, maybe 4 or more, try the seven courses of beef. The Tamarind crape is also a favorite.

I'm a local, and this is my favorite restaurant

By Katie C |

I travel a lot, and when I go to a new city, I like to have a foodie experience that I will reflect on for a long time. It's even better when the cost of the evening is not so large that I resent it later… and also if/when I overeat I do not regret it. This place makes me HAPPY. So when I have friends and work associates come to Seattle, I take them to the restaurant that I believe will offer that to them: Tamarind Tree. The location is a little funky for a 5 star restaurant, as it is in the portion of the International District "The I.D." that is called Little Saigon. Furthermore, it's tucked in the back of a sloped strip mall. If I didn't tell ya that the approach was weird, you'd likely think twice. BUT DON'T MISS THIS PLACE! Tamarind Tree offers extraordinarily fresh Asian fusion cuisine. The cocktails are out of this world, too. My favorite "tame" items include: Tamarind Tree Rolls, Chili Beef Lemongrass, Tumeric Coconut Rice Cake w prawns, and for dessert the Black Sesame Seed Ice Cream. All outrageous taste treats that have been dearly embraced by everyone I have ever taken there. This restaurant is a treasure!

A place the doesn't disapoint

By Ori Artman |

Consistently great food, drinks and service. Make sure to order some of the crispy rice dishes! The place is nesteled in a back parking lot .It's one of the 'old' place pre-gentrification. Well worth the hike to the International District!

Love this place!

By Caligirlinak |

Been here twice and food has always been exceptional. One of the nicest Vietnamese restaurants I've been to. You wouldn't know if from the outside but once you walk in, the atmosphere is lovely. I see a lot of Vietnamese restaurants who try to be "fancy" and give you small portions and even stray from the OG of Vietnamese food, but not this place. But I wanted to mention that my last experience was wonderful all because of Jimmy, the server. He was very polite and responsive to our every need. He also had 7 or 8 tables and seemed to work them with no problem at all. He even watched him as he helped another customer who had broken her shoe on the way in and he actually helped her glue it back together! I will be back for years to come whenever I am in Seattle.

Really good, except

By BobBoca |

Elegant interior. I've always wanted to try the 7 course Vietnamese dinner, so we did. I thought it was really good. Maybe the ground beef courses in 3-6 could have been a little more different from each other. I really enjoyed the congee at the end. So why a 3? The online menu said $33 for the course, the menu in the restaurant said $49, and the bill said $65. When I asked the waitress, she said they should have told you the prices on the menu might be wrong.

Authentic but classy inventive Viet-fusion

By Brain_bleed_md |

We visited this hidden gem up Jackson from the heart of the International District on recommendations and we weren't disappointed. The food is original yet authentic, classy yet homey, the best of both worlds. It was a bit of a walk (10 mins or more from the Bus/Train stop) but worth it. Although it's hidden in the back of a strip mall, it's a little oasis (literally, it has a waterfall!) with good service and a broad-leafed menu that makes you want to come back and try so many more items. The coconut rice cake with faux-prawns was a revelation of texture and flavor - not like anything (savory) I've ever had before. The satays were inventive (mushrooms, eggplant) and lots of vegetarian friendly choices. The only slight disappointment was the Tamarind Tree special rice, which was basically white rice and some sides - you got on a plate together - and made a mix yourself of? Maybe this is authentic, but not what i expected. Chili lemongrass tofu was the highlight - so flavorful. We shared small flan to finish - to get a little sweet after that heat. Overall an excellent choice for modern but not overly fussy food. And the bill was much less than what we paid down by Pike Place market for lunch that same day!

Vietnamese for the Vietnamese

By Julia T |

I'm Vietnamese, an inveterate Yelper, and the type of person to seek out food as the main attraction on my trips. Tamarind Tree is my favorite Viet place in Seattle! The bun cha Ha Noi (bbq pork sausage summer noodles) is particularly beguiling. The "beef seven ways" 7-dish meal is what you get on days of gluttonous inclination. For dessert, I'm addicted to the coconut jelly, which is made from the juice of a young coconut and poured directly back into the coconut itself. Eat the jelly, then scoop out the coconut meat for a healthy, refreshing, fun dessert.

Excellent Vietnamese cuisine and restaurant.

By andrea401 |

Hard to find as it is tucked back in behind several other oriental restaurants in the International District in Seattle. But so worth the hunt. I am gluten free and this place has almost all GF selections and the staff was great with assistance. My order, the special roll, was delicious and I highly recommend this place for someone who has never tried Vietnamese food. You will LOVE it!

A must if you're in Seattle

By Alec D |

Tamarind Tree continues to be one of my favorite place for dinner in Seattle. The is very very good and the cost is very reasonable considering the quality of the food.

Always a nutritious fresh treat

By Too_Groovy_4_Words |

One of my favorite dishes here is a platter of fresh vegetables that you can wrap in rice paper and build to your own preference. The martini menu is also a treat.

Dinner

By Joe |

We had dinner for five and ordered summer rolls (goi cuon ), fried spring rolls, duck salad, chicken lemongrass rice dish, a seafood omelet, mixed pork vermicelli - in other words, a variety of dishes. All were terrific, but the omelet was tops.

Surroundings need attention

By pwiser |

This used to be our favorite Vietnamese restaurant, and we often brought guests here for the food, decor and ambience, but on a recent visit, we noticed the restaurant appeared run-down, menus worn and dirty and service poor due to lack of staff. The food is still ample and good, but the surroundings are no longer inviting. I hope the owner sees his or her way clear to invest in some new furniture, new menus and improve the overall appearance.

Bit of a challenge to find but worth searching for it

By Jeff Brunello |

Long menu with lots of variety, and everything we had was very good to excellent. Our favorites included the stuffed squid, deep fried egg roll, Tamarind Tree Crepe, fried tofu pho, quail, braised pink prawns. Place was crowded, and staff stretched thin, but still got us our food with speed and a smile! Very enjoyable dinner.

upscale vietnamese

By Edmund1020 |

Don't let the weird location and terrible parking lot deter you from coming because the food is fine and the ambiance is good once you get in the door. This is a lot more than a pho place. There are lots of different Vietnamese dishes to choose from and they all look good. Their wonderful herbs and veges make their food so appealing and healthy. I'm going back soon.

Great spot to have lunch

By Fremontbrit |

If you're long for a quick spot for lunch in the ID this it .... Summertime you could sit on the patio...the soups are filling and inexpensive. The tamarind martini delicious....only pit fall is parking.

Excellent Vietnamese fusion

By AuTomJoy |

Very stylish decor tucked into the back side of a non descript strip mall. Some outdoor dining partitioned with innovative louvres and with a water element. Service was attentive and cheerful and quick. The food was delicious and there were some vegetarian fares as well. Vietnamese staples like pho and bun is excellent and the portions are generous. There were some fusion dishes but we stuck to the traditional ones. I felt like the price point was fair.

Great Spot!

By DonnaPerdue |

Authentic Asian food. Our Malaysian friend took us here for lunch and we were blown away with the variety, the atmosphere, the diverse clientele, and especially the food! We keep hearing that it is the best Asian restaurant in Seattle. Definitely agree!

Wonderful Authentic Vietnamese Cuisine

By Darina R |

My entire experience here has been amazing. First of all, the atmosphere is simply wonderful. There is an open fire in the main room and trees all over the place. It looks freshly painted and decorated (certainly not something you expect to find inside judging just by outside looks). The server greeted and seated us immediately, she was very attentive and asked if we needed any help with the menu. We ordered chicken satay for a starter and then some bun noodles with pork and egg rolls and beef ribs and rice. The food tasted amazing, as if we were really back in Southeast Asia. And the egg rolls especially were something beyond amazing. By the way, apart from complimentary water you also get a complimentary kettle of green jasmine tea (tastes great too). And for dessert we ordered pandan and durian ice cream, not your common flavors around the Seattle area, so you can imagine our excitement. The taste was beyond amazing. We truly enjoyed it there and I have no flaws to point out (that is rarely a case). Highly recommend to visit and certainly worth a trip to Little Saigon district.

Excellent food

By melgrieves |

Nice place for a group. I'm not a big fan of Vietnamese food, but the fare here is very good and fresh and healthy.

Authentic delicious food extensive menu selection

By Minnie Y |

My colleague ordered lunch delivery from this place & it was delicious so I decided to come here in person. The restaurant is unexpectedly located in the back of a parking lot, decorated in the Asian style like an oasis. I have not seen so many authentic Vietnamese dishes in a long time, probably the last time I was in Hanoi in 2014. It made me drool just looking at the extensive menu. My companions & I have the famous beef 7-flavors: a 7-courses meal made of beef. Beef salad, beef congee, beef hot pot, beef rolls done in 2 ways, & beef meatballs done in 2 ways. There were many more dishes I want to try but didn’t have big enough stomach for it. They also serve delicious craft cocktails. I had the spicy watermelon martini, yummy! Will need to come back multiple times to try out everything on their menu,

Excellent Vietnamese food

By ari405 |

The food was excellent and reasonably priced. The menu was quite long, with a variety of Vietnamese options, including rice dishes, noodle dishes, and soups. We visited for lunch, but the portions were dinner-sized and we probably ate more than we should have, but the food was so good! I especially liked the (rice?) noodles that were very flavorful, which I had in a noodle dish with grilled shitake mushrooms.

Seven Flavours of Beef - a wonderful exploration of the food of Vietnam

By HaydnB |

Wow, what an explosion of flavour and range of tastes. The restaurant is a lovely setting with water burbling outside and small trees in and outside the building. It is in the International District of Seattle. We arrived to find the restaurant packed, mainly with local people, but we had reserved, so were seated soon after arrival. My partner decided to try one of the exotic cordials, which was Lime with sugar cane over ice water (Đá chanh), the sharp lime and the sweet sugar worked well for my partner, who had another before the meal was over. Very tasty. We opted for the menu that my partner had spotted when we first identified this place. It was simply called: Seven Courses of Beef, it was an amazing tour of flavours of Vietnam. I would strongly recommend it. The meal began with Gỏi Bò - Beef Salad of shredded Cabbage, Carrot, and Green Herbs with House Dressing. This was tasty with a chilli warmth. Even eating noodles with chopsticks, something I've been doing for years, didn't faze my partner, who was new to it, who was committed to make the most of this meal. Our second course was Bò Nhúng Dấm - Beef Vinegar with thin slices of Beef and Vinegar Broth. The vinegar was sharp and pungent, we cooked our own meat in it, as well as some of the lovely vegetables that formed the Green Vegetables, Herbs, Pickles, Rice Noodles and Roasted Peanuts. plate which was very generous. We may never know if that was what we were supposed to do, but it worked for us, and in such a full resteraunt, nobody else noticed or suggested we were doing it wrong, which made it very relaxing. The rice paper was on the side and we had a bowl of warm water in which this was placed to cook. The next four items came together: Bò Nướng - Grilled Marinated Beef Slices Rolled with Vietnamese Bacon, delicious. Chả Đùm - Steamed Ground Beef Marinated with Spices, Egg and Vegetables, chunky and lovely. Bò Lá-Lốt - Grilled Marinated Ground Beef wrapped in La-Lot Leaves - crisp and delightful; Bò Mở Chày - Fatty Beef - Grilled Marinated Ground Beef Wrapped in a Thin Sheet of Fat very tasty. Each dish, though all beef, had a different texture and flavour. My partner preferred the Bò Nướng while my favorite was the Chả Đùm, but they were all very nice indeed. The meal was brought to a fitting crescendo by the Cháo Bò Beef Rice Soup - Rice Soup made with Ground Beef Broth Topped with coriander, spring onions and pepper. What a delight of palate pleasers. Many thanks for treating us to this delight.

Vietnames Food with a Flare

By FBAGoddess |

Really Incredibly Diverse Menu - there were pages of dishes to select from with influences from Chinese and Indian food and spices. Very appropriate for all types of occasions. The outside seating looked beautiful even though it was in the middle of a parking lot! Hard to imagine but it was set off and well done. I ate inside where it was peaceful and had terrific service.

Ate Here Twice in 2 Days!

By BONNIE K |

The food here was so good the first time, that I went back two days later. I had the best soup of my life: full of flavor with lemongrass sausage, rice, cilantro, green onion and a broth that was divine -- not overwhelmingly chicken or another dominant flavor. It was a generous portion and despite the fact that I was full, I finished it. It was just that good. Also the spring rolls with prawns -- nice sized prawns, plenty of lettuce, mint, basil. So good. (Had to have those both times.) Service is efficient. The menus could totally use an update -- they are grimy and falling apart. To mix metaphors, it has a rather "bistro" vibe, busy, a little noisy, many different types of people. Loved it. Will never go to Seattle again without having at least one meal here.

Great place to take visitors

By Alec D |

A great choice for almost any occasion. The food is always very good. I try not to be boring and get the same thing over and over but it's challenging sometimes. I highly recommend a visit.

Amazing Vietnamese!

By Arianna W |

Didn't have much experience with Vietnamese food, so was a little unsure of what to order. This place was amazing. Better than a majority of Asian restaurants I've been to. The restaurant was a little difficult to find, but this hidden gem was amazing and unexpected. The ambiance was intimate and prefect for a date night. The food was even better. We ordered the spring rolls and the seven beef dishes for two. Best spring rolls I've ever had. The beef dishes were a great way to explore multiple Vietnamese dishes and each one was delicious. A great experience.

Innovative menu

By MrFozziedoggie |

Beware, the portions are large. Okay, my bad, I didn't realize this place is family-style. So if there's only two of you, order wisely. Everything is good quality and freshly prepared. The wait staff are attentive and professional; wait-time for food is minimal. Drinks are eclectic with many using tamarind as an ingredient. You definitely won't leave hungry.

The purest, cleanest, absolutly best food you will ever eat!

By Chef Ed L |

A chef friend of mine turned us on to The Tamarind Tree in Seattle. The food is provincial Vietnamese and it is amazing!!! Looks can be deceiving. When you first drive up to their location you think "OMG" you have got to be kidding. They are located at the back corner next in an Asian business complex complete with grocers and other businesses. My first impression was "What has my friend sent me to?" Once you walk in the front door you walk into one of the nicest restaurant setting in all of Seattle. The sounds of flowing magical water, fire rising from a fire pit and flowers decorate the place and make you want to be there. The staff is friendly and helpful. Now for the food. Let me just say if you leave here hungry, it is your own fault. Two of us eat for $20 and leave stuffed every time. The food is pure, no chemical additives, lots of fresh greens and vegetables. We usually start with The Tamarind Tree Rolls as an appetizer for two. We then have a chicken satay. We finish the meal with The Central Broken Rice Crackers with pork. Once in a while we change it up and get the Garlic Green Beans. I love Green Bean but these green beans will leave you addicted!!! The amazing thing is that by the time we are done with dinner, we leave full and we have only had about 400 calories each. I now take every chance I can when in Seattle to have friends meet us there for a meal. Lunch, dinner and even a great outdoor patio for seating even in the winter!!! If you don't try the Tamarind Tree you are missing of of the greatest meals of your lifetime.

Meh

By LMLund |

Timely service and delicious drinks but the food was less than impressive. Ordered the fried tofu in tomato sauce which was dry and flavorless.

Don't let the exterior fool you

By Sarah H |

So, it looks like the back parking lot of a small strip mall when you arrive, but don't let that keep you from entering and trying Tamarind Tree. It's yummy, interesting Vietnamese Food. The tamarind martini has tamarind in it, and is an acquired taste indeed. The appetizers and main courses are really great and interesting. The owners recently opened Long's on 2nd and Stewart. Very yummy. Good for the vegetarian, vegan, Paleo, meat and carb, the everything crowd. We've gone there over the years with people of many dietary restrictions and everyone was pleased.

Greasy, Bland and Altogether Disappointing

By LightTravelerLondon |

The atmosphere on the back patio was lovely and promised well. But the moment our food arrived--a bit too swiftly to have been freshly prepared--our enchantment ended. The fish, described on the menu as steamed, was encased in crust that could have been made only by sauteeing, and was dust dry from overcooking. The salad greens were so lack luster, it was hard to believe they had ever been fresh. Service was indifferent. We had to ask for the bill serveral times before we received it. One further observation: the restaurant was 2/3 full and only two parties were Vietnamese.

Good Menu, Good Food, Good Service

By rolandlinda1 |

My wife and I recently had dinner here on a Saturday. It was packed however, we were seated within ten minutes from arrival. We were very pleased with the quality and quantity of the food. They have a good selection of food. Overall the food was very tasty. We also had good service. Overall a good experience.

Great break from formal dining

By OscarPhilips |

Here with the family, and we ate family-style, and had a blast! Largely appetizers and drinks, and was it ever messy ... but great. The staff was great, with recommendations for our family style nosh. Great place to come for an unconventional meal, and it would be great to return when I am back in town, but it defiantly has to be with a family group, tolerant of a lot of sharing.

Huh.

By John F |

Well, I heard great things about this place and so met a friend for lunch. Once we found the restaurant (even my GPS was confused!), we went in to an interior that does not match the exterior--so much nicer than we expected. Tables are quite close together and that, combined with how busy the place is, made it near impossible to have a private conversation, let alone a quiet one. Our service was just fine and very efficient. It was the food that left us rather "meh..." I had the Tamarind Tree crepe on the advice of a total stranger, and found it to be OK, but a bit bland. Seafood was cooked well, pork was OK, but the "crepe" itself is a deep-fried rice beast that defies handling. The "green vegetable platter" that comes with and is intended to be stuffed into the crepe was an enormous pile of mint, two different basils and other herbs still on the stems as though someone forgot to clean them and add them to the dish properly. I laid a few of them on the crepe and knife-and-forked the thing to death, but it was less than satisfying. My friend had the grilled beef short-ribs, and he was less than excited about these as well. Not a lot of meat on these ribs and the sauce was fine...just fine. Really, we found nothing to get excited about and that's a problem for a restaurant in a neighborhood like Seattle's International District where there are some stellar and less expensive and quieter places to go!

Vietnamese and South Asian in Seattle

By Scott C |

If you tire of Seattle's food trucks and copious burger joints (how many can you really have?) then this is the place to branch out for some really fantastic Vietnamese food. I often get the Phò (there are many variations offfered) but I love how you can get many dishes "dry style" with the broth on the side. The crepe is amazing as well and the "roasted chili martini" has a unique spicy kick. Located in the International district, the parking lot is always busy on the weekend but I've always found parking. Staff are friendly, and efficient. The Spring rolls are fresh and delicious (not fried). Definitely a regular go-to place for me.

THE Provincial Vietnamese Restaurant In Seattle...

By Takarehi |

This is an excellent place for traditional Vietnamese food with prices for most budgets. I really enjoyed the variety of items on the menu and with a group of nine all ordering different things our table was a visual cornucopia. The vegetables, soups, noodles, fresh rolls and satay rocked the taste buds. If you go during good weather seek out the patio option for a table and enjoy the sound of the waterfall. It was a little busy and reservations would be a good idea on busy weekend nights. We will return....highly recommended.

Another Great Meal at Tamarind Tree

By Alec D |

Tamarind Tree may be the most consistently restaurant that I go to in Seattle. The quality and quantity of the food is always at a very high level. The cost for this quality of food is extremely reasonable. I highly recommend!!!

Great Food

It was my first experience with Viet cousine and it was amazing. The menu was quite complicate and the waiter supported me. Ask for for Gỏi cuốn.

Spot-on Vietnamese Cuisine in Seattle

By kaylaartt |

A dear friend took us to this tucked away restaurant in Seattle's International District. It's a in 'mini-mall' of sorts and not too easy to find - but so worth it. Tamarind Tree serves provincial Vietnamese food and it reminded me of my long ago visit to Vietnam. The food is very fresh. The wait staff is very helpful and made excellent recommendations about my meal. The menu is extensive and they can cook to accomodate special needs. I can't wait to go back!

Fantastic!!!!

By parisryan |

Previous reviewers have this place right. Huge Menu, nice atmosphere, good service and terrific food. One thing I really appreciated was the accurate long in English descriptions of each dish. Makes it easy to decide what to get and will make it easy to try new things in the future. Definitely worth a trip.

Great Vietnamese Food..

By Hai N |

Great Vietnamese food and very courteous front desk and servers. We stopped by for lunch during Seattle visit. Food was so delicious and authentic Vietnamese food. The restaurant decor was nice and tasteful. Only minor thing is the men bath room smell like a bit of mold growing..

So embarrassed and disappointed

By Jo M |

We have visited this place many times and always happy with food and service. This time we brought out of town friends to experience the great food and ambiance. It was not to be. I had made a reservation that was nowhere to be found. Very busy place...staff running from table to table...no time to answer questions, never asked if we cared for drinks before meal. There were 5 of us, 2 received their pho an hr after being seated, 1 served 10 min. after that, 1 15 min. after that and my order came after the 4 were completely finished! It appears the cook was overwhelmed with orders. I felt so sorry for all the staff....This place needs a bit of management and repair.

Very Good

By Jen K K |

I love this place. The fresh spring rolls are my favorite. Love the soy stick in the middle. I would give this a 5 but I have experienced mediocre service a couple times. I will continue to eat here!! My favorite is the spicy beef lemongrass vermicelli bowls! I wish they had a better parking space but what do you expect in Seattle.

Surprisingly Excellent

By kinnikinik |

Being a frequent visitor to chinatown, I've seen this place many times while heading to others of my favorites. Tonight we gave it a try and wow, were we impressed! Each of us had a favorite dish with lots of different flavors and textures... the menu is maybe the largest I've ever seen but the excellent waitstaff is happy to help you navigate. if you're considering Tamarind Tree, just GO. it's excellent

Reliable Vietnamese Classics

By jennifer s |

Get pho or your salad bowl here...along with lots of other, less common offerings like Lotus Root Salad or 7 Courses of Beef. Solid preparations. The thing that sets Tamarind Tree apart from most Vietnamese restaurants is that it's more upscale....once you get inside. Excellent service.

Good food

By thuvu24 |

I went here at Sunday night for dinner. The restaurant was not crowded because it was closing soon so we were seated right away. However, the service was very nice and fast. Food also came out really fast, and the food was amazing.

Enjoyable!

By Daniel M |

Came here for lunch on Christmas day. Lots of people in wait area but we only waited 15 min. Decor is sleek, hip and cozy with wood work, mellow colors. Nice fire place running near center-back. Waitstaff attentive, but once you got your meal they wouldn't check anymore. I could have drank another beer. The food was delicious. I ordered the app cinnamon fried pork ball. It was tasty. The texture is that of a chicken nugget. Unique and other reviews suggested it, thus I followed. Then had the chili lemongrass fried beef which was yummy. The menu has many veggie options, thus my partner had veggie salad w/ shiitake shrooms and that was good. Be aware like in all Asian eateries, the food all comes up at once. No stages here. And with that the common intro greeting "are you ready to order?" But had them bring my beer 1st to wind down and slow them down a little. Finding it isn't that hard. It is in the back of small strip mall tucked in corner against a long dirt -wall. Can slightly see it from Jackson st. Light brown walls w/ tilted umbrellas w/ their logo. Some bamboo bladegrass coming out between panels. We will definitely come again. Many dishes still to try.

Jewel of Vietnamese cuisine in the Northwest

By Twinnqueen |

First we are Seattleites and now living in the southeast US. We visit families in Seattle annually, and every time we are there, we have to visit the Tamarind Tree. It's an authentic Vietnamese restaurant with incredible yummy foods. Start with their Tamarind Tree spring wrap, then move on to any of their Chef's specials, and you won't be disappointed. Their coconut jelly dessert is awesome, if you aren't already full enough (big servings). Caution! if you're going for the first time, you will be hooked! food is fantastic.

My Favorite Vietnamese Restaurant in Seattle

By Alec D |

My sure you make a reservation if you're going on a weekend evening. Two favorite dishes are Tamarind Tree Rolls and the Turmeric Coconut Rice Cakes both are excellent. The noodle bowls are also very good. The servings are very generous so it's easy to share with friends. I have been many many times and never been disappointed. The food is wonderful. Don't let the strip mall setting throw you. Inside the restaurant is very nicely decorated.

Yummy appetizers

By panneoleary |

I went here for wine and appetizers. Definitely try the eggplant and the salad rolls. They had a good selection of wines, and the service was very attentive.

Authentic, delicious and extensive menu

By RyanBingman |

Soups are really delicious, particularly the halibut lime soup. I also always get at least 2-3 of their fresh fruit drinks, such as the kumquat soda or sugarcane juice -- both are deliciously refreshing and rare finds!

A hidden gem

By Vivian B |

This place was hard to find. It is at the back of a parking lot. We began with shrimp toast. This was not at all what I expected. It looked looked like a big donut. This was too much pastry and not enough shrimp. We were both expecting something lighter. Next we ordered beef pho. The meat was cooked medium rare. The broth was very flavorful. The noodles were thin and delicious.

Knock your socks off good

By Dug S |

We have dined here numerous times. The last time was about three months ago and we were surprised that it had gone down hill. Not so clean, an extension cord across the floor and the food a bit off. So we were reluctant to go back but we did and happy, happy. It was cleaned up, no electric cords and yummy food. We especially enjoy the crispy fried rice cakes. If you haven't tried em do so. I had the chile, lemongrass beef and it was yum yum good. The servers are efficient, helpful and attentive. As has been noted by others, the location is not appealing but please look past that.

Always my favorite, especially for out of town visitors

By Zipster16 |

The menu is extensive and I'm always impressed that no matter what is ordered, the food is fresh and with pleasing presentation. When I have out of town visitors who want an "asian" meal, this is the place that I head. By the way, it's a lot quieter in the outdoor seating. The portable heaters make it cozy & warm.

Everything we ordered was delicious!

By ilubliner |

We had a wonderful lunch at Tamarind Tree. My wife is vegan, and she had no trouble coming up with dishes that she could eat, while others at the table ordered dishes with meat. The service was attentive, and the entire experience was very enjoyable. We'll come back next for another meal next time we're in Seattle.

gold standard

By Edmund1020 |

This is one of the first "nice" Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle and it is still one of the best and the one all Vietnamese restaurants are compared to. The aging ambiance is still nice and the service is good. You'll find all the standards and some others to try out. Great place, I should come more often. They have weekend specials for lunch.

Wonderful Restaurant-Don't be Intimidated by Shady Parking Lot

By CourtneySeattle_WA |

I love this restaurant! If you have never been before the restaurant is located in the back corner of a parking log. Often times there are dumpsters and garbage littering the parking lot. Do not over think it, just head into the restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant does not look that large but off to the left they have an enclosed courtyard which they use year round (don't worry if it is cold-they have outdoor heaters). This restaurant is great for large groups because all items are meant to be shared family style. They have a great selection of seafood, vegetarian and of course meat dishes. We make a point to try new items every time we visit and are rarely disappointed. Besides great appetizers and main courses they also have a full bar and a large selection of desserts. If I had to categorize this restaurant I would call it upscale Vietnamese. I have even taken my less adventurous friends to this restaurant and they love it. Please note, this restaurant is consistently busy so if you have a large group I would recommend reservations.

Wonderful for lunch

Sets the bar high for delectable Vietnamese cuisine

Tamarind Tree is a place than can take your breath away. Unbelievably excellent Vietnamese cooking for every dish . . . plentiful . . . at a reasonable price. Clientele here looks to be Oriental in the far majority, a really good trait if you're seeking authentic meals. And they are. Each dish for our group of four carried a distinctive, mouth-watering aroma and look . . . all with that wonderfully clean combination of lime, cilantro and red pepper heat, mostly. If you're standing in line, your mouth will water, I guarantee. Try something outside your boundaries: "Coconut Rice Paste with Shrimp" is an absolutely stunning appetizer, unlike anything you've tried. Or stick with the tried and true: "Red Curry Shrimp," with a side of white rice, defines the dish, here with more large shrimp than one person should eat. Dessert . . . there's a banana dish whose complex -- and delicious -- swirls of taste defies description. Only downside: really busy and really hard to find! Make sure you make a reservation and have a good GPS!

Definitely new flavors, just not for me

By Bobby Y |

This restaurant has a great vibe. The staff is friendly, but with the restaurant being busy, they were a little slow in taking our order. Having said that, the food came our quite quickly. We ordered the Chicken Phở, Bamboo duck noodles, and Chili lemongrass chicken rice. The Chicken Pho was pretty basic, no sprouts or any add ons. The Lemongrass chicken rice, was very tasty, but the chicken tasted as though it been cook a while ago and had been sitting all day (this dish came out in less than 3 minutes). Lastly the Duck noodle, this come in two parts. A soup noodle and a salad, this dish had some flavors unfamiliar to me along with a unfamiliar smell, i think it has something to do with herbs they use. I am sure it was executed well, but that smell was almost too much to tolerate. My wife was able to finish the noodle part by adding their delicious spicy chili oil. The salad portion was extremely flavorful, but again it had a herb that did not sit well with me. I asked what it was and the waitress referred to it as spicy mint. With so many new flavors and dishes, it is definitely worth another visit, but i will be avoiding the dishes i already tried.

Delicious

By Brandi M |

Not much to the outside of this place but don't be fooled. Elegant atmosphere inside. Adequate lighting, nice tables and a fire pit. Food was perfect. Great flavors, I don't think they have anything bad on the menu. Prices are median. We got the prawn fried rice and mushrooms and halibut. Everything was absolutely delicious. No complaints. Portions look small but there is a perfect amount of food since none of it will go to waste. Drink menu included alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Service was ok. Attentive and fast but not very personable.

Wonderful surprise, great food in an elegant setting

By Marco W |

This was recommended to us and we went as a group of 6. I was glad that we had reservations because it was quite busy of the weekend. We order family style so we could try a wider variety. There wasn’t a dud anywhere. Everything was delicious. Highly recommend. We will go back.

Hidden Treasure

This was the best Vietnamese restaurant I have ever visited. Delicious food; good variety. Portions were generous. Location is not easy to find without clear directions.

Think I ordered the wrong item

By hoyland54 |

Atmosphere was good apart from a group of very loud young women cackling. I ordered what sounded good and came with greens. Perhaps in Vietnam people take branches of basil and chew on them, but it was odd to be separating my own leaves from parts of the plant. The crepe was greasy and seemed to have pasta in it. I counted two shrimp. I should have ordered something someone else had had before me and could recommend. This usually is not an issue, but perhaps Vietnamese food is beyond me?

Loved the pho!

By thedreamweavers |

This restaurant was highly rated and we agree! It was a little tricky to find in the corner of a shopping strip parking lot, but well worth the search. Wonderful atmosphere and the Pho was really delicious. Waiter recommended the beef pho and it was a great choice. Hot tea very good and also enjoyed a coconut saki!

Fresh and Fabulous Vietnamese Food

By TheTravelHawks |

This is an incredible menu. A ton of diverse dishes and it is really hard to choose. If you love beef, get their 7 courses of beef to share with someone. Really delicious. I don't love their Pho, but everything else has been more than incredible. We took a party of 10 here this past summer from all over the country including my nephew and his family who have traveled all over Asia and they couldn't stop raving.

Superlative Viet Namese cuisine

By dadhy |

It was THE V N restaurant when it opened some years ago and was very popular. We went regularly but haven't in a good while. Stopped in at 5 PM on a Thursday and glad we did. Lots of free parking. Good timing, just a few diners, quiet, and for the first time seated at the fire pit, welcome on a chilly day. Elegant ambience in dim lighting but on inspection would benefit from freshening. Extensive menu, many novel inventive dishes making selection challenging. Vegetarian options. Never been disappointed. Prices remain quite reasonable. Attentive wait staff. Happily they had the jellied coconut desert, unavailable on previous visits. Should go more often.

Surprising

By Kurt R |

Absolute great food! I was so pleased with the quality and service of this place. One of my favorite Seattle restaurants

GREAT!

By fawkthescene666 |

Back when I lived in Seattle, I would go here often when I wanted some Pho - with a great dining experience. There are TONS of great Pho restaurants in Seattle - especially in U-district where I lived. But sometimes when you want to take someone out on a date, or just something nicer - this is the place to go. The service is excellent - its not fine dining, but it seems like they strive for that kind of service. At least in my experience, there have only been a couple times where I was a little disappointed in the service. But having spent many years as a bartender/server, I can see whats going on and understand that they arent just trying to neglect you - they are just slammed. A typical meal for me and a friend was Pho, and share a green mango or green papaya salad - with chicken or shrimp. This was all I really needed. The pho was more expensive than your typical pho shop at around $10-12 and the salad with chicken was around the same price. Not really expensive at all - but the restaurant has a nice environment, dim, mellow...and has outdoor seating with heaters in the colder season. Highly recommended.

The best

By Kyffon B |

Great food, drinks, atmosphere, menu... I try to make it in to Tamarind Tree every time I come through Seattle. It's a good spot. Service is always on point too.

Never disappoints!

By Jay S |

I confess that I eat at the Tamarind Tree more than any other restaurant in the ID (Seattle's International District) because it is two blocks from my office. But I also eat there because the food is excellent, service is efficient (and usually friendly) and the value is simply unbeatable. Soups, rice dishes and noodles are all good, and the chef does equally marvelous things with meat, sea food and tofu. My favorites are anything flavored with lemongrass chili (not too hot but a lovely flavor). Vietnamese iced coffee is great for lunch and great exotic cocktails for dinner. Eat outside by the waterfall when you can but the inside space is far more elegant than the prices would lead you to expect. One of the gems of the Seattle dining scene!

Fantastic

By Liz S |

Absolutely fantastic. The menu is overwhelming and utterly delicious. We ordered the cinnamon pork roll which was unique and amazing, a lemongrass chili chicken dish and a ginger vodka chicken dish, all of which we demolished. The place is a little hard to find as it's set back from Jackson and doesn't face the street, but persevere and you will be rewarded.

Excellent!

By Rusty A |

I've never had Vietnamese food before so a work friend suggested we go to this restaurant when I was visiting Seattle. It is tucked away in the back corner of a parking lot in a neighborhood of tired buildings, but when you step inside the dining room is definitely more luxurious than the area would suggest. Prices were reasonable and the service was fast on a Wednesday evening. I loved my first taste of Vietnamese cuisine and will definitely be back the next time I'm in town.

Awesome

By GaBBe W |

Great food! Stuffed! Great price for quality! Huge portions! No one finished the full thing haha. Wort visiting and time. I recommend for lunch or early dinner. Hardly any people. Starts getting crowded around 6

Elegant Vietnamese

By Pinchas C |

Nice Ambience. Creative food. Excellent spring rolls. The Pha was too large for one person but tasty. Eggplant sate was a wonderful surprise

Surprising Bit of Vietnamese Haute Cuisine in the International District

By MongozDad |

Though the entrance through a crowded parking lot off of Jackson St. is a little humble, the fine interior of the restaurant is stylish enough to dispel any worries of the Tamarind Tree being less than spectacular. Highly attentive service, fine food, and a pleasant atmosphere await diners at this establishment.

Vietnamese and Cambodian delights

By Philip F |

This little place nested in the International district of Seattle had a lot to offer. Very reasonable price and good portions on all dishes. We loved the grilled eggplants, satays & the noodle dishes.

Fabulous

By DGB-2011 |

Amazing tasty food There is an extensive menu and everything was fresh - staff we really helpful Highly recommended

Fresh tasting, great menu

By Nan D |

Don't be fooled by the concrete surroundings, this place is a peasant and friendly. The menu boasts a wide variety of regional dishes. There were some good veggie options as well. The food was fresh, and interestingly enough, everyone at the table had a different favorite and least favorite dish. Good drink menu and desserts too.

A Little Disappointed with the Food, Service was Terrible

By Pat29069 |

We had a party of 4 which must have been invisible to the staff. Took us several tries to flag down anyone to get water and give our order. Then it took forever for the food to come...may other diners received their food even though they ordered after us. The eggplant dish was our best dish...it was very good. Would try another place before coming back here.

Fresh, flavorful and delicious

By famoffive1982 |

If you haven't tried this Vietnamese spot, you are in for treat. They have a terrific menu and are very careful with their food. Highly recommended and worth a drive.

Fabulous and Fun, Well Appointed Interior and Food is Great

By Betsy R |

So other folks speak to the neighborhood. My host told me her story that she was bringing a nyc foodie here and after parking he said the food MUST be good because it sure isn't the view. Perfect really. Interior of restaurant is lovely. Full bar with great specialty drinks. I am not familiar with Vietnamese food but everything ordered was delicious, fresh with tasty sauces. Satay, spring rolls, specials...all great. BTW we had great service!

Pleasant Restaurant with Outside Seating

By Pamela A O |

Met up with some friends for dinner on a very warm day in Seattle. This Vietnamese restaurant has pleasant outdoor seating in the shade. Since it's located at the top corner of the building complex it's in, it's fairly quiet. I had the green mango salad with grilled prawns. The portion was gigantic, but was good enough that I ate it all. It's not as good as Green Leaf at its best, but still worth a visit. My friends had the chicken bun (vermicelli) dish and were very pleased. Service is good.

Tasty Vietnamese Food with a difference

By PAllavurS |

The decor is very nice and overall the food is very good for the price that you pay. It is different in the sense that unlike more traditional vietnamese cuisines in the US (that I have been to), this place has some unique dishes that I have not found anywhere else which are inventive and tasty.

Sometimes it just doesn’t work

By Mike P |

We enjoy Vietnamese food and were looking forward to the Tamarind Tree which was highly recommended. Soon after we arrived the place was full of enthusiastic diners. I guess we just didn’t know what to order and our waitress wasn’t very helpful. We ended up with a tasteless soup with noodles that we couldn’t seem to retrieve with either the chopsticks or spoon. Another dish with beef (I think) was so tough that you had to pick it up with your fingers and gnaw on it. Our advice would be to talk to someone first who knows the restaurant and can give you specific recommendations on what to order. The place is obviously popular so it must have some good items on the menu. Perhaps our experience was the exception?

Great vietnamese cuisine

By ChefVan |

Everytime when I go Seattle, I always come here. It is a very nice restaurant with great food and service. Serve fresh and hot. I can't compare with other vietnamese restaurant in Seattle because I never go there. Maybe next time I should try another one, and then I can tell which one is he best vietnamese in seattle.

Two Thumbs Up Authentic Vietnamese

By Katey K |

On a family visit to Seattle from NYC I was craving Vietnamese food and looking for a place to eat noodles on my birthday (a long standing tradition.) After reading the other Trip Advisor reviews we decided to give Tamarind Tree a try, and we were NOT disappointed! Don't let the strip-mall asian-market vibe outside deter you. We arrived towards the middle/end of lunch around 1pm on a Thursday and were promptly seated in the main dining area. The menu has everything you could want, and if you don't see something listed, just ask. They can probably make it. We loved everything: the tamarind tree rolls were delish, green papaya salad w/ grilled tofu was fantastic, even the meat eaters loved the lemongrass tofu. They made me vegetarian spring roll bun (which isn't listed on the menu, but was perfect), and the pork chops were some of the best. We were a slightly rowdy bunch (spilled a glass of wine) and kept asking questions about the food/ menu but were treated as if we were regulars. The local in our group already said he'd be going back again, and it will be on the must do list on our next visit.

Consistently Awesome!

By harsimrit8 |

Delicious upscale Vietnamese that is ALWAYS extremely fresh and tasty! As vegetarians we have a lot to choose from. Every dish we have over delivers!

Great Vietnamese food in the International District

By Alec D |

Tamarind Tree should be on the top of your list of places to eat in Seattle. The quality of the food is very good. The service is good but the prices are extremely reasonable. I had the Pho noodles with chicken on my recent visit.

Wonderful Surprise in Seattle's International District !! Worth Finding.

By r a |

Seattle's International District does not have many of the hidden alleyways and interesting sights of, say, San Francisco. But in terms of food, several places measure up, and then some. One of those is Tamarind Tree, located in a hard-to-spot location back off of the street. It appears like nothing special....until you walk into the entrance of the restaurant. Suddenly, you are in a hidden little food paradise! Great menu, super-fresh ingredients, great service, very reasonable prices. Go find this place!

I will return here again and again!

By JoAnna W |

This has been a restaurant I have long wanted to try and am so glad an appointment took me just up the street. I now know first hand it is well worth making the trip to to this neighborhood to experience again. The service was attentive, the selection outstanding, and the taste of every bite delicious and memorable. We ate family style sharing the Vegetarian Crepe, the Tamarind Tree rolls and the Green Mango salad. The sauces served with each were outstanding and the plate of fresh herbs was plentiful and complimented the dishes perfectly. The place exceeded my expectations and I look forward to getting back there to try their other specialities!

Saved first Day in Seattle

By Daniel K |

As we were checking in at our AirBnB, this near by Restaurant saved our first evening as we were starving. Fresh Food, friendly waiter, but a little too dark

My all time favorite restaurant in the world.

By Matt M |

I first discovered The Tamarind Tree on my 21st birthday (12 years ago) as friends and I were exploring Seattle. Since that first amazing culinary experience, I've traveled back to Seattle (6hr drive) dozens of times and always try to fit in a visit to this restaurant when I'm there. Authentic Vietnamese food, and I say that with authority having recently visited Vietnam. I recommend the Bun Cha Hanoi - a serious explosion of flavors mixed in ways that will throw your brain for loops. A sweet and sour broth mixed with fresh herbs, rice noodles, and a variety of grilled pork marinated in lemongrass and other herbs. SO SO SO GOOD!

Great Asian restaurant

By Sara W |

The food, the service, the prices -- can't be beat (but the parking lot can be a little challenging).

A most memorable and eclectic Vietnamese culinary experience

By Eric H |

I took my parents to Tamarind to get really great authentic, varied and fresh Vietnamese food and we had a most memorable perfect feast. The menu is so wide ranging, unique and appealing it was hard to decide without ordering everything. We ordered diced clams, stuff squid, halibut in hot pot and a variety of rolls and duck salad, to give you a sense of the range of the menu. The food came out fast and presented a delicious feast for the senses. The dishes were extremely aromatic, and you can tell they put care into getting the freshest ingredients and are preparing food beautifully. Simply every bite was delicious. The service was very excellent and we waiting no more that 10-15 to get our food. The atmosphere of Tamarind is stylish and cozy. It offers a more refined experience to that of most other neighborhood Vietnamese restaurants if that is what you are looking for; we certainly really enjoyed it. Also, parking is easy to find in the tucked away lot where the restaurant is located. That was another plus.

Good Vietnamese restaurant

By Djaidje |

Don’t pay too much attention at the area. Hidden in the backyard of several shops, the entrance is definitively not very welcoming. Inside, the atmosphere is nice, even though the service remains impersonal. Efficient but not friendly at all. But the food is excellent. The different sorts of spring rolls are incredible. And my curry with coco milk was really excellent.

What a Surprise!

By seattlesumirekan |

It does not look much from outside but inside is nicly decorated. Food was delicious, especially appetizers. Do not skip appetizers. Our friends took us here and we were not disappointed. I would like to come back and try more different dishes. Service was really good, too.

Some really good dishes

By tekaboat |

We ate lunch in the Tamarind Tree and enjoyed it so much we went back for dinner. We had their Tamarind Tree spring rolls both times--excellent with a nice dipping sauce. Other dishes of note were the shrimp patty noodles, chili lemon grass beef, and grilled eggplant. We also enjoyed the steamed prawn coconut ricecake and the coconut curry prawns. One dish was pretty awful, the stuffed squid. It was overcooked, tough, and not very tasty. Overall, one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle.

Consistently excellent food.

By trujcs |

I have eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. Last time I had turmeric rice cakes with shrimp and ginger white chocolate pudding for dessert. Both were fabulous. My dinner companions all loved their meals too. Reasonable prices. Somewhat noisy and slow service but only because they are always swamped (deservedly so) but pleasant enough atmosphere.

Absolutely superb!!!

By Tom Pamperin |

Three co-workers and I ate dinner here this evening and it was so good it is hard to explain. I had the Tamarind Spring Rolls and the single serving short ribs. It was all so tasty it is the best Asian meal I've had in a long time and I have had some pretty good ones. The food wasn't Americanized and was as good as any I have had in Viet Nam. One of my co workers had the Chicken Pho - the small bowl which was huge - and said it was the best Pho she had ever had. Another had the halibut with mushrooms and he said it was excellent. The fourth had a shrimp dish that I gather he was less fond of because it was basically a tempura dish. My meal with 2 bears and tip was $37. One other thing to add was that I dropped one of my ribs on my shirt. They came right over with some club soda and fixed me right up! Go you will enjoy!

Fantastic Vietnamese food

By aner g |

The food is amazing, a huge menu of delicious Vietnamese dishes. The quantities are huge and the prices ridicuslously cheap. Definitely one of the best options for Asian food lovers in Seattle. The only minus is the location.

Best Vietnamese foot I've ever had

By jschreib11 |

Usually when I think Vietnamese food, I think pho. Tamarind Tree is so much more! We spent a delightful evening here. It is hidden away in a strip mall in the International District but once you enter the atmosphere is lively and scintillating. Our friend ordered for us because we were overwhelmed by all of the choices. We had a shrimp appetizer--very tasty but I was too timid to eat it in the shell; the rice rolls were the best! I loved the fresh lettuce and herbs. The green beans were delicious and had a nice sauce. The steak had excellent flavor but a lot of gristle and sort of tough. There is an enticing drink/cocktail menu. Service was gracious and attentive. All in all, it was a magical evening and I would definitely come back here again.

Fantastic as always

By Alec D |

Tamarind Tree is consistently very good. I need to go more often. We had the Tumeric coconut rice cake, which was very good. We also had the Thang Long yellow fish which was excellent. I highly recommend a visit

Best restaurant for the price.

By John E |

You will pay more to find a place this good or better. Our very favorite restaurant anywhere. We have been there over a dozen times and it is consistently excellent. The menu is big to navigate but you can ask for help from the great staff.

Hidden Gem

By Travel for Grownups |

Hidden gem with delicious, authentic food and friendly service. Enjoyed Tamarind crepe, rice paper prawns, spring rolls, pho, and our favorite Tamarind Tree platter.

Excellent food and decor

By BayAreaTraveler2 |

Hidden away in an unassuming strip mall, this restaurant offers an oasis of calming decor, great food with abundant vegetarian choices, and a vibrant atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Dinner date at the Tamarind Tree.

By Christine O |

This charming restaurant with it's elegant ambiance is a hidden gem of a find tucked away among the dozens of other Asian restaurants in Chinatown. It also has a screened in patio when the weather permits for seating. The parking is in a alley but safe. The restaurant was very crowded which was a good sign. Very good and attentive service. The food was excellent. They consider themselves to be a Vietnamese restaurant but I would see it more of Asian infused. Aside from their Pho they have a quite extensive menu to choose from. I would recommend the Tamarind Tree.

A favorite place for dinner

By Alec D |

No matter how often I go I always enjoy having a meal at Tamarind Tree. Now the the new Seattle trolley is running it's easier to get there without a car. The food is very good and considering the quality and quantity a great value. Highly recommend a visit.

As good as I remember....

By SeattleEcc |

This is our first time back due to the pandemic and we were last here well over 4 years ago. It is as good as I remember. The extensive menu is unbelievable and everything is just so good. My favorite is the seafood soup noodle with anchovy broth. There is fish chunk, shrimp, squid (perfectly cooked and tender), pork, Chinese chives and eggplant slices. It is definitely comfort food in the mid winter. The satay appetizer (any kind of meat, eggplant, mushroom or tofu) is a good thing to start and get your appetite going. The service is efficient and very friendly. We were there well after the lunch time on a Tuesday and people are still steadily coming in. The stores around the restaurant in the same plaza have clearly become the victims of the pandemic, which is very sad. The upside is that now parking is much easier. In summary, this restaurant clearly has the staying power and we will definitely continue to support this restaurant.

Lunch outing

By tobeach1 |

We had the fresh spring rolls they were super crunchy and delicious with peanut sauce. I also had the Lemongrass chicken. It was also delicious. One of my lunch mates had the Pho Soup which she thoroughly enjoyed. Service was a little slow.

Great Food

By Stephen C |

We spent two weeks last year traveling around Vietnam, and the food at the Tamarind Tree was better than any we had in Vietnam -- and I´m not joking. This place is inexpensive, too. We´re only in Seattle for two days, and I´d like to go back again. The lemongrass tofu was great. If you like Vietnamese food, give this place a try.

a pleasant surprise

By Judi Spencer |

Having never gone to this type of restaurant before it was surprising good My grilled Prawns with noodles was great. Loved trying something new to the palate

Less good for novices

By Michael F |

The food we had was good but not remarkable. My wife thought that the prawns were not fresh. This was much different than the experience of foodie friends who recommended it after going with a Chinese business partner. We would have benefited from help from the wait staff.

Delicious experience

By Dana G |

I don't know much about Vietnamese food but was assured this place was very legit. What I DO know is the food was delicious and so beautifully prepared and presented you almost hated to eat it! (Almost.) We had the Tamarind Tree rolls, the Green Mango Salad, and the Tamarind Tree Crepe. WONDERFUL.

One of the best authentic Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle

By fob2000 |

Tamarind Tree is a Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle’s Asian district. You won’t find Asian fusion here. Tamarind Tree is a true to form Vietnamese restaurant. That means they have a huge menu, quality & fresh dishes, and spotty service. My Overall Rating – 4 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere – Tamarind Tree is hard to find. Look for the Asian Plaza sign and head towards the back up the hill. There is a white sign that will lead you towards a water feature and a wooden entrance. Inside is a nicely appointed restaurant with plenty of seating. There’s a bar, waiting area, and if you’re lucky enough you can sit next to a fire pit in the middle. 1 Star. Service – It’s a true Vietnamese restaurant, which means the service is just ok. Our server took our order quickly, the food came out fast, but that was the last time we saw him until we flagged him down to pay. That’s very common in average Asian restaurants, but Tamarind Tree feels anything but average. It’s unfortunate but not bad enough to ruin the experience. ½ Star. Food – I’ll be honest, when I first walked in I thought it would be more Asian fusion because the restaurant was too nice. But the good news is that if you’re looking for true Vietnamese cuisine, you’ll find it here. The menu is huge, so I went with my favorite Vietnamese Dishes: Bun Cha Ha Noi (Grilled pork with Vermicelli). I was very pleased as the portions were large, the noodles & veggies fresh, and the pork was tasty with plenty of that grilled flavor. We also ordered some noodle soup dishes like Bun Oc (Noodle soup with snails) that were all truly authentic. Now, the prices at Tamarind Tree are slightly higher than other Vietnamese places, but you get what you pay for. 1 ½ Stars. Will I Return? – Yes. They have almost every popular Vietnamese dish, so while it’s hard to make every dish great, it’s nice to see Seattle has a great, high quality & authentic Vietnamese restaurant. Not only will I be back, but I’m taking the extended family too. 1 Star.

Holy Moly...!

By Clairina2012 |

Everything I tasted was out of this world. Diamond in the rough of international district. Go. You will thank me.

Food was very fresh, the perfect end to my Seattle visit.

By Peter B |

Staying at the American Hotel Hostel nearby was the perfect opportunity to visit "Little Saigon" and the Tamarind Tree. This is authentic Vietnamese food served fresh and quickly.

Great Food!

By Liz D |

One of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've been to. Ability to reserve online was a definite plus! Presentation, taste, price and decor gets an A+! It is so popular that parking can be a problem.

Good Vietnamese Food

By Oliver K |

The restaurant is hidden in a dirty Asian strip mall. But once inside, you'll be surprised by its modern, upscale decor. I've been to the restaurant several times, and my favorite dish there remains the Tamarind Tree crepe. I usually liked its La Lot Beef, but the last time we were there we found it too salty. I tried the stuffed squid for the first time, because I liked the stuff squid at another Seattle Vietnamese restaurant, Monsoon, but I still liked the Monsoon dish better. Overall, still a good Vietnamese restaurant to visit, but I like Monsoon better.

A top choice if you're having dinner in the International District

By Alec D |

Tamarind Tree continues to excel at Vietnamese cuisine. I have never been disappointed in anything that I've had while there. The quality is very high, while the cost is quite moderate (when compared to many other restaurants of equal quality). If you're visiting Seattle this is a great choice for dinner.

A calm and tranquil oasis- but average food.

By eclectic_traveler043 |

This is a lovely island of tranquility, created in the back corner of the parking lot of a characterless strip mall in the International section. The staff are warm, professional, helpful. Unfortunately, the food is not up to the staff. The Tamarind roll is the best thing we tried by far- a type of spring roll, one of theLight and flavorful. Green bean platter used poor quality green beans and couldn't overcome that. Lilly blossom halibut, filled with great things, somehow came out bland and rather dry. Similarly the duck salad lacked character. Very reasonably priced, but you won't think you are in Vietnam.

Consistently a pleasant dining experience

By SeattleEcc |

I don't think I have ever had a bad experience at this place. Don't let the exterior environment fool you. The location is not the greatest and the parking is limited. But the restaurant itself is lovely and cozy and the food is so so good! I have tried most of the specialty soup noodles; they are all different but all excellent. They warm your heart and clear your sinuses on a cold winter's day. The portion is ample. All the appetizers are quite tasty as well. The wait staff is polite, well-dressed and very friendly. I have observed the kitchen staff for awhile and everyone always covers their hair (even men with very short hair) and I don't think I have seen that in any other restaurant in town. This is the kind of thing that makes me go back time and again. Lastly this place is always busy, even during weekday lunch time. Be sure to make reservation for dinner on the weekends. Lastly, the price is very reasonable and never breaks the bank. Overall, this is just a nice place to enjoy some authentic Vietnamese food and I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

Don't do it

By Yaneisy K |

We tripadvisored for a nice place to eat Asian food, family friendly and this one poppep up as #1. We did not even get to the restaurant due to individuals smoking crack on the streets around the restaurant and homeless people and shady characters infested. Honestly, we ran as fast as we could. Not recommended at all, specially if you are looking for a decent, peaceful place to share with the fam.

More than just pho

By myinhilo |

Tamarind Tree has extensive menu which includes bun bo hue, spicy soup that’s different from pho. Located in the worn looking Asian Plaza shopping center, but the interior and decor is elegant, great place for business meals or family meal.

Hard to find but tough to beat

By Jacqueline W |

Located in the back corner of a strip mall, this eatery is a great place to expand your taste buds. We shared Tamarind Tree noodles-grilled pork and chicken, the best egg roll I have ever had and grilled shrimp paste on sugar cane. Served on a fresh salad with basil and shiso and rice noodles.

great atmosphere

By Franklin W |

Food was ok, atmosphere was pleasant enough. We sat next to the fire place. Tables seemed uneven? Wait staff was courteous. Tea was hot. Food was so-so. Definitely feels like you're somewhere else when you go here, I enjoyed that.

SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED

By STEVE C |

I've eaten here since the opening. This was my first bad experience. Staff was very busy and probably understaffed on a friday night. Only half of the menu was available "due to COVID," an explanation I do not understand. Everything I wanted seemed to be unavailable. Please have your full menu or print a new one.

Just average

By Susan T |

Highly recommended by several colleagues. The food was plentiful, but just average tasting. The restaurant was full so it must be popular. My friends and I were disappointed.

Great Sunday Dinner

By Hystericalhappiness |

I read rave reviews and the food indeed is top notch. Unfortunately the service is woefully inadequate. With a 5:30 pm Sunday reservation we sat for 20 minutes without a wait staff acknowledgement. I finally went up to the main entrance and asked an elderly woman (owner?) if she could help. Five minutes later a young gentleman showed up. He took our order and then the drinks arrived ad hoc across an additional 15 minutes (not all at once). When the food finally arrived another 15 minutes later in spurts, it was delicious. We enjoyed an eclectic range of preparations for scallops, squid, snail, pork & tripe soup, spring rolls, and vegetarian cheese crepes. Restorative beverages included passion fruit and lychee martinis, beer, and champagne. Unfortunately, once you order no follow up on food or additional meal or drink purchases. Finally had to flag the waiter for the check. Frenetic, nice ambiance out on the patio, and a need for strong patience related to timing. I would still go again!

Hard to find but worth it

We walked from Safeco Field after baseball game. Do-able but uphill all the way! We really did have trouble locating it (back of parking lot) but so glad we didn’t give up. Our server was very helpful and our food was delicious. The decor was lovely and restful and we did not spend a fortune. Definitely plan to return

One of Seattle's hidden delights

By FlloydKennedy |

You have to know how to find it, tucked away at the back of the parking lot, behind a little local food store mall, but when you enter you will find the decor and the staff to be stylish, engaging and inviting. The food is exceptional, the portions very generous so a great place to share and sample some of the more unusual dishes.

No longer a great find

By Gail G |

This may have once been a neighborhood gem, but the TT's service and food are not up to the modern decor. Drinks were slow in coming, very slow, and the entrees were mixed up with our neighboring table. The food was only fare, and we were rushed out the door at the end of the meal. Not a relaxing Saturday evening night out.

Spacious place for comfort food

By Wenyager |

The decor and ambiance is welcoming inside. We ordered a small pho and lemongrass grilled chicken rice. Portion is reasonable. Free parking available.

Great and Autentic

By gborotraveler |

Local friend took us there for dinner. Ok it was amazing. Best Pho I have had since I was in Vietnam couple of years ago. Delicious broth, plenty of basil, bean srpouts etc. Other dishes tasty, great spring rolls. Service was fine as well. Sits a little tucked back in a corner of a small strip mall/shopping center so hard to see. Highly recommend

My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the world

By Tomoko T |

I visited Vietnam three times and Vietnamese food is my favorite. No doubt that this is my favorite restaurant in Seattle if not in the world. Food is so delicious and reasonably priced and you can find something you have never eaten before. I bring visitors to this restaurant and they are delighted.

Delicious & authentic Vietnamese

By Gratefultraveler |

Holy yummy Vietnamese food! We had a good variety of dishes to try. Chicken fried rice, Chicken Pho, egg rolls, and the tamarind rolls. All I can say is DELICIOUS!! You will not go wrong here if you enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine. We sat with Ling who was a very nice server!

Very authentic provincial Vietnamese food…. in the famous, international district..

By Alok Jolly |

Seattle has always been home to the ethnic cultures from across the Pacific, and they have settled here and brought with them an amazing variety of cultural heritage, which is almost best expressed in the wide diversity of culinary tastes that they have imparted to their new home. Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese (to name a few) foods abound, in many variations, and make this city a foodie’s delight. Just go out and explore with your taste-buds, but watch the waist. This huge “provincial” restaurant is a gem. It’s located in the International district, which is close to downtown and Chinatown. The actual location isn’t much wo write home about, as it’s in the back of a strip-mall parking lot and signs warn you not to leave anything in the car, so it isn’t a great neighborhood.. be warned. Looks somewhat dingy means IS somewhat dingy. However, there isn’t any reward for the faint-hearted. So, we parked and went on in. The space is huge, and there are lots and lots of hard-topped tables and hard wood chairs. They’re NOT looking to make you comfortable… even though they have many tables, they have just as any hungry and happy customers !! Eat and move, but you get to eat a lot. The décor is somewhat standard with a bamboo-screened water feature at the entrance, potted plants, dark and light wood paneling alternating with plain painted walls, with the occasional chintzy artwork and some fireplaces thrown in for interest. There’s also an outdoor garden patio with a few tables and propane heaters for the season. Nice, but no takers at that time of year. The service is a bit erratic: the waiters are hard to find because the place was packed (they could hire some more?) and we had to flag him down several times. The portions are great, and the food is extremely tasty and well presented. Everything looks like a piece of art on a plate, and the smells are divine, drooly and inviting. We started with the Green Mango Salad (sweet and tangy, crisp, fresh) Tamarind Tree Rolls (transparent skin wraps around a huge amount of greens and meats prepared with amazing spices and a sharp sauce… I’m salivating now, almost two months after this meal) Lemongrass Chilli Beef Rice (just love lemongrass in anything) and Da Nang Pork Grill (chunks and slices of soft, savory pork grilled and spiced to perfection) followed by some desserts (Ginger Chocolate Mousse and Ginger Ice Cream) which were both interesting and a good finish. Good value, very good helpings & great taste, but slow, spotty service. But go for it if you are brave and like good food...

Feel Like I Am Back In Vietnam!

Everything about this place reminds me of an authentic Vietnamese restaurant. Food is DELISH, especially the different satays. Order one of everything! My daughter is a vegetarian and there were so many great dishes for her, it is a great place to bring a big crowd with different food preferences. Highly recommend!

Great Food & Service on a Sunday Afternoon!

By mzkatt |

Swung in here as we were starving on a Sunday about 3:15pm. The place was packed with two large parties, but we were promptly seated in the back corner away from the crowds. The lemongrass beef satay was fantastic, as was the lemongrass chicken meal and 'morning glory' greens. Two of us split everything and we had more food than we could eat. Would definitely go back!

Birthday lunch

By Jacksonlovestoeat |

I had the Shrimp fried rice. Many large shrimp cooked to perfection. My regret is I didn't split the meal with my wife. It was a mountain of food. Without a doubt best I ever had. The appetizer was egg rolls, also best ever and that was a consensus by all 4 of us. We had 4 main dishes, 1 appetizer, 1 desert, and hot tea. $53, very reasonable for a quality meal.

Vietnamese that is more than pho

By syncomm1 |

You will be amazed that such a stylish place is in such a seedy International District mall.but that adds to the sense of discovery. A wide menu so sometimes its nice to go on autopilot and order the set dinner--is it six or seven course meat? Starts with something that looks like it is a shabu shabu but it isn't. Ask how to eat that course and then cruise through the rest.

An awesome surprise

By Kat M |

Tamarind Tree is truly a hidden gem on the Seattle International District. It is at 1036 Jackson St. hidden back behind the street building...in the corner. Not much to look at on the outside however once in the door the smells, atmosphere, and staff capture your attention. We went for lunch early on a Saturday and by 12 noon it was standing room only waiting in line. The menu is mostly Vietnamese and well varied. The prices are excellent. One can get a nice selection from the lunch menu for $8.00. I didn't see anything over $12.00 however there may be. The food is well presented and and tastes amazing. It is a clean, well taken care of restaurant. I highly recommend emerging yourself into the Asian experience at Tamarind Tree.

Wonderful

By nancy e |

We loved this restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere and great food. Our waitress was exceptional and helped us so much with our choices. Egg rolls were the best we’ve ever had and main dishes were so good. Cannot wait to return.

Hopefully, tonight was just a really bad off-night.

By Charles T |

The service was poor. Is it really so difficult to look at guests when you are answering questions? The service was also disorganized: 4 meals came out quite apart - though my appetizer did come out with my main course. Trying to get additional items such as alcohol or sauces, was also an exercise in patience. As for the food; three of the four of us have travelled/ lived in South East Asia, and none of us were impressed. Hopefully, tonight was just a really bad off-night.

Love Tamarind Tree

By Alec D |

Still one of the best places to go for very good food at a reasonable price. We had the coconut rice cakes with shrimp, delicious. We also had the cat fish, another favorite of mine. If you haven’t been...What are you waiting for?

One one nicest in town

By Morrie C |

Very seldom have I been disappointed here. The weekend lunch specials are a bargain. Parking at times is hard to find. Looks like a hole in the wall from the outside but very nice inside very well decorated.

Very good Vietnamese food

By Djaidje |

This is the place where you can find excellent traditional Vietnamese food, while expecting your waiter to speak English. You could certainly find more typical places in the area, but this is likely the best compromise if you don't speak fluent Vietnamese. Beer and wine list is quite limited, but food menu is just amazing. And at a very reasonable price. No hesitation if you like Vietnamese food! Go and try, you won't regret.

Very pleasant Vietnamese food

By SaW43 |

We had rolls, satays-chicken and mushroom, papaya salad, short ribs an grilled chicken with lemon leaves. Everything was flavorful and reasonably priced.

Keep all valuables in your trunk and beware of where you park...

By Krisinseattle |

Unfortunately this is a fabulous restaurant in a sketchy part of town. Warning signs about locking all valuables in your trunk are posted a couple times as you enter the restaurant. Despite that, the interior of the restaurant is great, the kitchen open and the food is served promptly and delicious. We shared the skewered grilled pork rolls, the lemongrass beef satay (fare, wrapped around the lemon grass), the chicken salad and the chili lemon grass beef salad, both of the latter were great. There is another location for the Tamarind Tree is Seattle, which I think we'll try next time instead of finding some guy leaning against my car, begging for money...

Great Value, Tasty Meal, Fast Service

By PNWExplorer1 |

The restaurant was highly recommended to me by my boss. The proximity of the restaurant to my office, along with the high praise, made the difficult choice of choosing among dozens of restaurants, in the International District, a lot easier. My guest and I both enjoyed the Bún thịt gà nướng (Skewered grilled chicken, noodles, and salad), which was served to us right after we ordered. I thought that the restaurant was a wee bit dark inside; otherwise, the dining room presented well. The staff was welcoming, and delivered service that was friendly and lightning fast. The meal was tasty and a very good value. The restaurant parking lot was full, and street parking was scarce. I will likely return to the eatery in the future.

great Vietnamese food experience

By Barbara K |

I've been to Tamarind Tree a few times before, and it was always a good experience. This was no exception. Four friends and I ordered a LOT of food, and loved it. One of my favorites is the special crepe, with yummy greens to stuff into lettuce with the mixed meat and veggies. We also had the catfish pot, delicious, and halibut, good if you like mushrooms, and very moist. Green beans with tofu didn't have much tofu, but the beans were tasty. Spring rolls to start had a nice crunch. Service was fantastic, and I loved the tamarind martini. It's a little tricky to find, and you feel like you've gone to the wrong place as you wind around the parking lot, but inside it's lovely.

Don't Miss This Vietnamese Gem!

By VickiD |

Don't miss this gem, tucked into the corner of a parking lot in the International District of Seattle. We had their signature Tamarind Tree Rolls (amazing!) and the Turmeric Coconut Rice Cakes . . . a delight of herbs and other wrappings that go around a delectable rice cake topped with a shrimp. I have been craving this ever since our visit. Great prices. The bar was understocked the day we were there - only one of the 6 or so sakes listed on the menu was available.

Fresh, Fresh, Fresh

By jstand1 |

Even though they were busy we had a lovely dining experience. The food was fresh and delicious. It was tiny bit difficult to spot as the location is tucked away at the back of a parking lot, but so worth finding!

Really great food at an excellent price

By Alec D |

No matter how many times I go to Tamarind Tree I am never disappointed with the quality of food, and at such at reasonable price. Today we had the Thang Long yellow fish, Tumeric coconut rice cake, and Tamarind Tree rolls all really good.

Just OK- Signature Dish- disappointing

By gogogoin2010 |

While I am a fan of many foods from varied Asian cultures, perhaps Vietnamese is just not one of them. I dined at Tamaride Tree with someone who “raved” about it. I was VERY disappointed. First, it is rather hard to find. Tucked away behind a building in Seattle's Asian district. The menu was large but unless you really know Vietnamese food, it is overwhelming. On the recommendation of the person who was familiar with this restaurant, I had one of the “signature” dishes; The Seven Courses of Beef”. It isn’t exactly “7 courses”. It was tastings of 7 different types of beef along with vegetables that were to make 7 different preparations of beef. Some of the beef was in soup, others came as 4 differnt beef types on one plate. Also, I had to actually WORK and make the different dishes like soak and roll the “rolls” or miss with the vegis...It is just TOO MUCH WORK! The majority of everything; the vegi's, wraps, etc went untouched. I would NOT recommend this entrée. If you like Vietnamese food you will probably like Tamarind Tree. If not... it isn't worth it, It wasn’t for me.

Not your usual Vietnamese fare

By sccfsac |

Many varieties of Vietnamese entrees offered. Daily specials offer excellent value. Located off-street frontage in mini-mall. Highly recommended.

delicious Vietnamese, great service

By wedelmaster |

We were a big group of 14 and had a fun evening dining "family style", the server was great at making suggestions on a number of dishes that we could share. Interesting cocktail menu, very good food, a few more traditional dishes not commonly seen in other Vietnamese places I've eaten at. Reasonably priced, nice atmosphere.

Not your average Vietnamese restaurant

By LolaNoodles |

So I was in Seattle visiting some family members. They have lived in Seattle for a long time and they suggested we go to Tamarind Tree for dinner. It is unassuming.. in an Asian part of town... But as soon as you walk in the door you know you have found a jewel of a restaurant. The food was excellent.. We had these fresh spring rolls.. so good.. my cousins kept ordering more. I ordered this sort of unique pineapple salad with prawns which was a delight...all the ingredients tasted fresh and delicious. I won't bore you with every dish we tried that night, but I did have a gin and mango martini that was way too good. I stopped at one, but it was tempting. I will definitely go back there again next time I am in Seattle.

Mixed feelings

By wheedance |

The appetizers were great and the setting is lovely, though difficult to find. It's back off the road so don't rely on Google or even Waze to get you to the right place. We met friends and had a party of 8. The meals weren't as good as the appetizers for most of our selections. The Tamarind Tree Crepe was just OK.

Good pancakes and noodles

By ShiningSchnee |

The place is relatively cleaner than other Vietnamese restaurants in the neighborhood. We ordered pancake and noodles, which came with heaps of fresh vegetables and herbs. The seven courses of beef were not as good as before. It's a casual hangout for friends and family. Will still come once a while.

Great Food Wont dissapoint

By David L |

Seems like a hole in the wall as your are approaching but the interior is nice and the food was excellant. We ordered four or five appetizers and 8-9 main dishes for our party of 8. Tried the signature Martini's which were wonderful. Each dish was interesting, new to us and all tasted excellant. Service was good,a bit slow but we did order alot. Cant wait to go back.

Best kept secret in Seattle. Reservations good, walk in also welcomed. Get the Tamarind crepe. Greens morning glory. Plantains in coconut creme dessert. Yum.

Vietnamese in Seattle

By DX4 |

My husband’s friend recommended this place. We decided to stop for dinner before going to Portland. It’s tucked away in the corner of a Vietnamese restaurant plaza. Because we did not have reservations, we got seating under the tarp with heat lamps. It was still kind of chilly and loud. Food pretty good. Pho broth tasty but beef and noodles ok, combo platter interesting especially the fried shrimp paste wrapped around a piece of sugar cane, stuffed squid was small and super salty. The veggie salad roll was very good - nice texture and good fish sauce dip.
