Barely Acceptable

By Robert V |

WARNING DO NOT ENTER TO EAT OUTSIDE OF LUNCH SPECIALS. Came in to dine, ten minutes after lunch special price, fair, my fault. I thought the food was going to be fresh and good based on reviews, WRONG! The food was reheated, mostly in-gravy sauce with very limited actual portions of lamb or chicken, in small bowls. Although the food was tasty & favorable, the prices are OUTRAGEOUS, you will be SOAKED!

Better than a Buffet! My search for Best Indian Food has just ended.

By Richy624 |

A Vegetarian perspective. Since I know this food, I am asked by my friends, "What is authentic? or What is Good?" This place has the food prepared absolutely correctly! They might not have waiters with pointy shoes, or shirts with little mirrors in them, or belly dancers, or fancy table ware, or double damask linen, or a host of other things that people use to judge an overall restaurant experience, but the food here is not just great, it's PERFECT. Better than a buffet? What does that mean? When I first called to inquire about a buffet, the person answering said, "Sorry we don't have a buffet". They did say, "We have a lunch special". They didn't go into detail, and I didn't ask, but went anyway. Glad I did. Here is what they SHOULD HAVE told me, "No Sir, we don't have a buffet, but if you don't mind my saying, I think what we have is BETTER than a buffet, and here's why. We give you a giant platter (From memory I would say 10" by 14", with a generous portion of rice in the center, and then two curries of your selection ( I got Mutter Paneer, and Channa masala) on each side. They also give a cup of Dahl, and a Plain Naan. for (get this) $6.99. That's cheaper than a buffet, and I couldn't finish it, had to take some to go... you cant do THAT on a buffet. So, more quantity than I would have eaten on a buffet. TWO curries, to provide sufficient breadth to the meal, with soup and bread included, and I get to take home? This to me is BETTER than a buffet. The Dishes I tried a samosa (vegetable). Cut it open. Perfect flaky crust, pinched together, no gloppy double seams of pastryshell. Beautiful White potato, and green pea colors, vibrant, when cut. The Tamarind sauce did not appear homemade, and was just OK, But the Samosa... picture perfect. I'll go back and take some photos. Dahl appears to change from day to day but was perfectly made. Naan has no egg. I made sure, and asked twice. Some places use egg in the Naan... I just get roti in that case, but Naan without egg is great. Sweet Lassi. I you have never had it, and wonder what Lassi done right is, order one. They are heavenly. Many many disappointing Lassi have I had. This one not only is delicious, and the correct mixture of yogurt and ice water, but is a most generous tall milk glass full. I have had 1/2 the quantity of inferior quality for much more that the $2.50 price. I suspect the mango Lassi is also good, but I am partial to the Sweet Lassi. The Samosa is $1.50 per piece (you don't have to buy a full order ($3) if you don't want to. On subsequent trips we have had the Saag Paneer (the only thing missing from this dish is an "award". it really is that well done), and Vegetable Korma, which was very very delicious. The vegetables were similar sized, and in a delicious gravy. Disclaimer I know I gave 5 stars. I am choosing to overlook things that others would nitpick about, restaurant location, hole-in-the-wall, no buffet, staff, not fancy, etc, but since this food, for me, is about the FOOD, this place will get 5 stars from me, and a hearty recommendation to vegetarians to include the airport-close venue to your plans. My search for great Indian food, at a cheap price, with exceptional quantity, quality, and price, has ended. Not to say I wont try other places.... I just wont be as driven to find one. And now I have a place to take friends to who want to know "How should it taste".

Decent food, meager comfort and atmosphere

By RaW431 |

The food was good enough and the portions ample. When we arrived the tables were not bussed and the floor not swept. Hard seats, outdoor restroom.

A lovely Indian restaurant

By PTG1976 |

After many days in USA, we were longing for Indian food, when we found this place. The food served was very authentic and tasty. The place is neat and the service was with a smile.

Great find

By Traveling91012 |

Small family run restaurant (9-10 tables). Delicious authentic Indian food. Great service by friendly people. I especially liked the vegetable samosas, the chicken tikka masala and the mango lassi. The naan was also really good. Lots of people picking up food to go as well. I would eat here again.

Great food, great value

By David_M48406 |

This is easily the best value in Indian cuisine I have experienced. I went there for lunch and found a casual restaurant with limited seating, but very good service, a good selection and excellent food at fantastic prices. I don't think I ever paid this little for great food. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Delicious Real Indian Restaurant

By Jameswillis |

Finding a really good, genuine Indian restaurant can be a real challenge. Tandoori House is typically understated with an excellent menu a delicious food. The menu is extensive and caters for all options with all the old favourites included. We did opt for our stock standard choices of a saag and chicken tikka masala, and both were delicious, and came with a generous serving of rice. We found it inexpensive, tasty, with lovely friendly service. We will definitely be back!

Delicious

We've driven by and watched as several different restaurants have opened and closed in this location. Heck, we've even dined at one of the incarnations over the years. But it took several long months (and a desire for something new) to get us to stop in at Tandoori House for dinner. I can say this: the decor for Tandoori House is much the same as it was for the last restaurant (it was a pho restaurant); the layout, tables, window coverings and such must have conveyed when they bought the property. At any rate, there was only one other couple dining in when we arrived. They do really good business with their to-go orders, something we'll likely remember for our next trip there. The two women working that day were very polite, though one of them was kind of pushy in that I-need-to-take-your-order-NOW way, but it was fine. We placed our orders - Chicken Makhni for me and the Chicken Tikka Masala for him, plus an order of the regular naan - almost right away. All we had left to do at that point was wait, while watching the Bollywood-inspired shows that were on the TVs around us. While we were waiting, we were brought out a starter of sorts. I know she told us what it was, but I'm horrible and can't remember. It was a thin and crispy bread, served with two different sauces. It was interesting - the bread itself had a spiciness to it - but it was kind of difficult to eat. And, we didn't have plates or utensils at that point, so it was kind of messy. Our food came out soon after, and it smelled heavenly. The two dishes looked pretty much the same at a glance, but closer inspection (and a quick tasting) revealed the differences. My chicken maknhi (mild creamy butter sauce) was smooth and flavorful, with a hint of spice, but nothing too overpowering. My husband's tikka masala (creamy onion and tomato sauce) featured tomato chunks and a spiciness level that was set to 11. (I'm pretty sure he asked for it to be spicy, and they happily obliged). Each dish was served with basmati rice, which was presented to us on a platter to share. The naan was crispy, browned to almost black at the edges, and cut into wedges. It was the perfect complement to the sauciness of the dishes. I have to say, I loved the maknhi. It was more flavorful than I had expected, and had a warmth that had nothing to do with the fact that it was freshly made. My husband's tikka masala was also very good, but the maknhi sauce was a clear winner in my book. I definitely want to come back for dinner, though I think we'll do like the masses and order to go (they do online ordering, too, which is a nice bonus).

Finally found good Indian food in San Diego

By Sandy |

I live in north county. I haven't found a good Indian restaurant there. Made a trip to the city to run an errand and looked for a place for lunch. Originally I was looking for an Indian buffet lunch but am so glad I found this place instead. There was a lunch special including choice of 2 entrees, rice and naan for $6.95. The food was freshly prepared, hot and super tasty!! I would take the time to travel here for lunch again.

Excellent

By Lisa |

Visiting from CT and this was a one of the best meals we had in San Diego. Vegetable korma, chicken tikka masala, chana samosa, and Bengan bharta were all delicious. Shared by 5 of us along with garlic naan and we ate well for under $50.

Great food

By Mystic2012 |

I decided to try a new restaurant in my neighborhood. This was the place I chose. It was great! The prices were decent and the size of the orders were more than enough. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys Indian food!

Excellent food and quantity was good

By amichoc |

We ordered carry-out, Quantity was excellent for a family We loved their biryani and Panner tikka masala. samosa were ok. If you love indian food dont miss this out.

Soooooo good!!!! Yummy!!

By Jen J |

We came here based on reading Trip Advisor reviews and I'm so glad we did, it was fantastic! I got the Buttered Chicken and my husband got the Lamb Jalfrezi, both were outstanding, but I think we found a new must have in the Buttered Chicken. As my husband put it, "It's other worldly good". The naan was excellent as well. I was surprised to find fennel seed in the plain nana but it was surprisingly good and I'm not a huge fennel fan. It's always fun to try new things and expand your palate and I feel like we did that tonight. Thank you!

Delicious Lunch

By lostsmoothie |

Tandoori House was a great stop for lunch to go. 4 of us stopped in to get take out - We had the paneer tikka masala, the vegetable korma, the alu jeera masala, and 3 orders of the garlic naan. Everything was very flavorful and delicious. Would definitely recommend for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. If you're craving great Indian food in the Point Loma area, Tandoori House fits the bill!

Service with a smile and AMAZING food. Great deal!

By SwissMissSD |

I wrote a review about Tandoori House almost a year ago and I just wanted to say that it's still one of our favorite places to get Indian food in town! The service has been excellent and the food has never let us down, from the naan to the masala!

Looks are deceiving

By DesertDom |

I didn’t know what to expect when we pulled into the parking lot, The restaurant looks questionable from the street. However my desire for Indian cuisine outweighed my skepticism and I’m happier for it. The food was very good and the service was extremely friendly. My lamb curry and matter paneer were to die for. The chicken saag had a rich flavor to it and creamy consistency. Sooo good! Go go go!

Check this place out Authentic Indian food

By Rahul T |

Summary, We were traveling to San Diego and looked this place up from Google. Authentic, homemade and delicious Indian food and this comes from connoisseur of Indian cuisine having dined Fine Indian all over (Bombay Club, Saffron, Kiran’s..) The experience is just opposite of Taste of Himalayas restaurant across the street that’s place to avoid. Taste of Himalayas serves bland and tasteless fare (we ate there few days back) and Tandoori House was good change. Some details, ordered Lassis that came freshly prepared, frothy and delicious. Not frozen in advance. Naans were excellent fresh, crisp, thin & right mix of cilantros. Just Yummy we went through them fast even my Son over ate a little! Curries had near perfect balance of spices, not spiced down and tasted like homemade. Service was quick and fast though we were early in the day. We were taken care well of. The ambiance of place is not grand but food makes up 10 times for it. I will definitely be back.

Good Indian Food

By TTZulu |

- Good Quality Indian Food - Lunch Special options are a great choice (Rice, Nan, Soup + 2 Entrees). - Their Mango Lassi is great - Not a lot of seating / parking capacity; - moderately priced making it great value for money stop

Awesome food

By abhig3 |

If you are fond of Indian food, this is the ultimate place. Omi was the person-in-charge and he was very helpful. We ordered daal makhan, kadai paneer and breads. Everything was superb tasty.

Great Choice for Takeout

By ColoradoKate54 |

I used the BeyondMenu app to order takeout from Tandoori House this evening. The app was easy to use, allowed me to set the time of pickup, and offered the choice to pay online or in store. Our food was hot and ready when we arrived. It was well packaged for transit. We ordered lamb samosas, chicken vindaloo, and chicken makhni. The dishes were very good. We had Ras Malai for dessert, which we did not care for, but we had never tried it before and didn't know what to expect. (It was probably more us than them.) We will definitely order from Tandoori House again.

A real Taste of Delhi

By GlobalGypsy_13 |

This no frills 10 table restaurant does a booming take-out business. We dined in on some Northern Indian dishes on a scarred table that reminded us of a hole in the wall tiny restaurant in New Delhi with hearty home cooking. An amazing deal is the huge pitcher of mango lassi that my daughter promptly posted on facebook and which we couldn't finish (but wished we could). I rated the nan bread the best that I've had outside of New Delhi and would go back for more flavors of Delhi in the strip mall on Midway that also has Farouz Cafe and Art Gallery, a favorite for MidEast food. So if you have a yen for real ethnic food, go to Midway.

Love at first sight!!!

By macosta09 |

It was my family’s firts time eating Indian food and we fell in love. It is a small place, but very clean with a family friendly environment. The service was great and they made sure to reccommend options. We initially ordered chicken somosas, but they were out. The beef somosas were delicious. The beef Tika Masala and Lamb Korma were delicious. I wanted to try a local beer, and they recommended the Old Monk, very nice!!! We will definitely go back on our next visit to San Diego.

Really good naan

By t0nyvee |

This might be my favorite place for indian food, and it's not only for the naan haha. I think the overall presentation of the place is impressive and inviting, and the food is super tasty, not overpriced either.

Lunch

By Chandra P |

Found the restaurant on trip advisor and when we pulled up it looked a little sketchy. Don’t let the exterior fool you! The food was excellent and priced appropriately. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Overall I would highly recommend trying this place especially for lunch.

Small Shack with Great Food

By Bart R |

Was a good experience. Great food in a smaller setting. We ordered several dishes and ate family style so everyone could taste the great variety of their sauces. Lots of to-go takeaway orders show it is a local favorite.

Great Lunch Deal!

By SwissMissSD |

My boyfriend and I sometimes stop here for the great lunch; I love the saag paneer and the veggie korma, and he likes the chicken. We've always had friendly and quick service. Great little place if you're in the Point Loma/Midway neighborhood!

Yummy lunch

By CoronadoCarol |

For $8.99, for lunch: soup, rice, naan bread, and two entrees. One lunch is more than enough for two. We had a vegetable curry and chicken masala, both very good; but we will order mild instead of medium spice next time !

Good Indian food

By KartikJain13q |

This place has good lunch combos and chef recommendations which are value for money. I noticed that majority of customers were white people. I had 3 meals during my 2.5 days stay in SD.

Good Food

By Nomad1431 |

We had ordered Aloo Naan, Garlic Naan, Onion Kulcha, Vegetable Korma, and Baingan Bharta. The curries were perfectly seasoned and were brought piping hot to the table. So were the breads. The onion kulcha was liberally sprinkled with coriander seeds, which could have been avoided. But overall: really good flavors; simple, unassuming decor; and friendly service.

Too good

After trying nearby restaurants and getting disappointed every time , we decided to try this one and guess what - it was simple great. Very tasty food. Paneer tikka masala was awesome and perfect spices.

Honest homestyle Indian cooking

By Travelling_Bubbies |

This is our favorite Indian place in San Diego... homestyle, family owned restaurant with excellent food. Granted the ambiance isn't anything special but the food is what you come for--- we have not only eaten here several times but have also catered parties- excellent service every time, never fails! Chicken tikki masala, veggie korma and saag paneer are our ultimate favorites. Lamb biryani was great and the meat was so tender! The mango lasse is also really good and we recently tried the veggie pikora appetizer. Enjoy!

Amazingly tasty Indian food in a very casual setting

By EagleFlyer |

Had early dinner at Tandoori House after a busy day with the family and we so much enjoyed the excellent flavors and very friendly service even though the dining area was about as casual as it gets. Tandoori House is a very small family restaurant with few tables that does a lot of takeout business. The tables and chairs are bare and basic wood, and the amenities are minimal. But the restaurant more than makes up for that in excellent flavors and very friendly service. We had pakoras, samosas, curries and lots of naan. Everything was fresh, tasty and satisfying. The food was also plentiful so we had leftovers to take with. The service is friendly and quick. Would so happily eat there again when next in San Diego. (Visited in May 2019)

Tasty Tandoori!

By HPotter8 |

We tried this very pleasant small casual Indian restaurant at the recommendation of a friend who lives in the neighborhood. There is a small but very convenient parking lot- essential in this very busy area! You can do easy take out or just eat in at the small but clean and comfortable restaurant. Service is very friendly and fast. The lunch specials are a real deal and the highlight. But more pricey dinners are reasonable and come with good portions. You have to order Nan bread separately. Everything tastes very good. Overall, an excellent place for a quick reasonably priced tasty family meal.

Awesome, authentic Indian food

By pvel |

On our last day of a visit to San Diego we felt like Indian food. Went here as it was close to our hotel and had good online reviews. Food was wonderful and authentic. Pretty spicy, even though we ordered medium, but delicious. Good quantity to share. Hot fresh Naan bread. Friendly service. Cold beer. I could go on.

Amazing find! If I lived in San Diego, I would be a regular.

By Captain Tar |

A flat tire, Discount Tire store and Tandoori House… What do these have in common? One led to the other. This was an accidental find for Kelly and I. We suffered a flat ire at the airport and were helped to the tire store on Midway. When they told us to hang out for 3 hours… we decided to go across the street to a strip mall with a handful of very small restaurants and such. We settled on Tandoori House. Not a large venue, maybe 10 tables and run by an eager to please family I presume. Biruyani - Tandoori Chicken - Tikka Masala, a lentil soup to start and Nan bread. In short… My wife declared this the best Indian Food she had found since coming to the US from Britain 14 years ago. Still raving about it on Thanksgiving day, GO THERE !!! If you are anywhere near the SAN airport this is 10 mins away.
