Highly recommend!

By Maureen027 |

Lunch was delicious! The portions are generous and so flavorful. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Atmosphere is relaxing and restaurant is clean.

Wonderful flavours

By Diane B |

We happened to spot this awesome little place while in Portland. The shawarma, falafel and other meat dishes was so flavourful. The chef came by and suggested other choices on the menu for our next visit. Give the Lebanese beer a try, it was good too! The staff were very personable, and the prices quite reasonable. I would be sure to eat here again.

Amazing food!

By ChTexas |

Saw the review on TripAdvisor. Was staying at a hotel close by. Was worried that the restaurant looked “too casual” to be a great dinner place. Don’t let the casual atmosphere worry you, the food is amazing! We love flavorful food, are foodies and travel and eat well. Ordered the recommended meals per the server and loved them!

Enjoyable meal

By bbqmaster69 |

This was 1/2 block from my hotel, it is on the smaller side for a restaurant. Good service. The 3 of us had a few different dishes and all were good to excellent taste. prices were good for the quality and quantity of the food. I would definitely go again.

Service not so good. Tatziki was excellent.

By harryl2001 |

Stopped in after after a hot afternoon exploring Portland. We were going to order dinner but service was so slow we decided to order just an appetizer. The tatziki was excellent.

Staff is making an effort, but food is just not good

By Anne327 |

Restaurant has nice decor and friendly staff. We visited on a Thursday night at 7pm and only one other party was there. Service was fast and welcoming, but unless we caught them on a VERY bad night in the kitchen, I can't see how this place has such a high TA rating. The food was extremely average, I could make better at home. We both had kebabs, one lamb, one kafta - meat was not good quality or well prepared, the "special rice" tasted like it came from a box, and the pita bread was truly terrible (consistency of a cracker). I feel bad because they seem like very nice people, but the food was just not good at all. We should have guessed by the fact that they advertise themselves as Moroccan/Lebanese/Mediterranean/whatever and have pizza/calzones on the menu as well as their "Moroccan specialties, but they're really none of the above.

Possibly an "Off-Night"?

By Just_J0an |

Went for date-night and was terribly disappointed. We told the staff we had theatre tickets afterwards and there should have been plenty of time to get there, but... young server (think it was a family member), ordered dishes on the menu then we were told 20 min later that they weren't available. We finally told them to bring us whatever was ready & cancel the rest. Then they had trouble producing the check and even it was incorrect. It took well over 2 hours to get out of there. And the food quality? Marginal.

Super Food -- Try the Moroccan Appetizers

By FoxTravelers |

Dinner was excellent and the bread offered w/hummus and the appetizer was fantastic. Obvious family run and it shows; can't go wrong here for sure. Only wish there was more lamb in the wraps.

Great meal and a great host

By bigyoda33 |

One of the best meals I have had this year. Bread was very good as was the hummus. The Moroccan chicken was really good? Thank you for the experience.

Lunch

By Perla K |

Delicious tea! The falafel, the hummus and the salad were finger licking good! Service was great! Very attentive and gracious! We will go back and bring our friends!

Not even a little bit.

By 503Jetsetter |

I am not a picky eater, and I love both Moroccan and Mediterranean food, but when I received my order through GrubHub, I was extremely disappointed. The $8 soup that I ordered came in the tiniest to-go container I have ever seen, and was bland and flavorless. The chicken shwarma plate came with the most stale pita I have ever had, and the chicken and rice were both extremely dry. I wish I could get a refund - awful experience.

Wonderful Moroccan food

By Shirley W |

It is a new restaurant , run by a family, grandmother is in the kitchen. I went twice. The food was excellent , we had Mezza for one meal both meat and vegetarian with a wide variety of foods. The baba ganush was the right smoky and delicious, we had fatoosh salad , excellent. Also at the first meal excellent sandwiches.

Great food slow service

By Tikibarb |

Food was great but the service was slow. The server was very young. We had the tzatziki the hummus and the lentil soup. All were delicious. And the pita was homemade and wonderful.

Love love love

By Hannah L |

I love the atmosphere and the food was amazing. The waitress was incredibly friendly, but the service was a little slow. I still loved it!

Hidden Gem

By cathyd |

We came across this place after finding the restaurant we intended to eat at was closed for repairs. Since Morocco is on our travel bucket list, we figured this was meant to be. My husband and I shared a pot of Moroccan mint tea. I ordered the meat mezza plate and he had the majadra dish with lamb. We shared our bounty of food and enjoyed every bite.

I LONG FOR THIS WHEN I AM AWAY!!!

By EsmeEats |

The flavors are amazing! The service is amazing! The prices are are incredible for a downtown location! If I had to chose only one place to eat in Portland, this would be it! Everything is lovingly handmade and fresh, and there is no way I could ever choose a favorite dish. Each time my daughter orI arrive home from a vacation we head straight to Tangier! Try a Mango or Peach "Cosmo" I could drink them all day :) The decor is modern and artistic, the parking is usually easy. Bring friends so you can try everything! I order lots of things even when I am alone because the leftovers are fantastic (and I hate leftovers!)

Great meal!

By 1amazingmom |

Moroccan food which was Delicious! Family run restaurant very close to our hotel. We had read reviews and all were positive. On another visit I would like to sample several appetizers

So sweet

By jeff |

I love authentic, out of the way places and I found Tangier wonderful. The food selection was substantional, the dishes we had were very tasty but most appealing was the 3 generations of ladies who preparded and served our food were charming and alone worth the visit.

Excellent!

By Donna F |

Our group of 11 had a fantastic meal at this restaurant on a recent trip Portland. The flavors of the different foods were superb and the staff was friendly and helpful. Don't miss this little gem on your next visit to Portland!

Great atmosphere, even better food.

By schleppingtoomuch |

This was one of the best Mediterranean restaurants I've ever eaten in and as we don't eat meat, other than fish, I've eaten in a lot. I had the vegetarian platter and everything on it was excellent, but the quality of the pita and baba ganoush were both exceptional. I loved the way the pita was served, fresh from the oven, in a large round. Delightfully, there are multiple Vegan options that are clearly marked as such. It can be difficult to find Mediterranean restaurants that are a pleasure to sit down and dine-in, but this place is nicely decorated and designed for dine-in. There was a ton of food and we both happily overate, my husband had a vegetarian casserole and helped me with the vegetarian platter a lot. The only thing worth mentioning is that their falafel is a little bit different (less heavy, more flavors) than many places, but I loved it.

Christmas Dinner wonderful

By Susie B |

We decided to do something different for Christmas dinner this year. Our son suggested Mediterranean food. We did the ol' TripAdvisor search and found Tangiers. It was superb. Atmosphere is casual and food is delicious! The tables were full with Christmas patrons enjoying themselves The selections were wide in assortment:Vegan, vegetarian, meat lovers. They offer a full bar. We will definitely be returning on a non-holiday. It can easily become our new Portland favorite.

Ok food - not a great value

By Drtpaper |

My wife and I had lunch here. Food was about average for a Mediterranean place. Lamb was great, but sides were below average. My wife had the salad with lamb on it. Portion was okay. Dressing was pretty good. I had the Shawarma plate and it was a small portion. The only thing big they give you is a pita bread the size of a pizza. They served water with the lunch with no ice. I would try to find other places. the local food trucks are better.

Family Run and delicious

By theyoungjimmy |

The meza platter was beautifully presented and even better tasting. Warm bread (LARGE Pita) as much as you want. The wait staff was friendly and generous. We even met the cook. Can't be anymore positive.

Best meal of the Trip

By fool4travelin |

I can't rave enough about Tangier, the service and food were wonderful. Zahara our server was really good and helpful. The portions are really big. The wife and I could have shared for sure. The meat combo was to die for. I will be coming back for sure.

Attention to detail

By WyoTravlr |

A wonderful meal and wonderful atmosphere. Clearly, someone spent time and attention to the detail in the atmosphere of the restaurant, which is appropriate, lovely, and relaxing; and in the food, which is fabulous. The staff took time to talk with us about the food, the city, and anything we wanted to talk about. The food had complex wonderful flavors. The price was low (especially for the high quality food!); and the portions are large. We will definitely come here again next time we are in Portland.

Lucky find

By Lesley T |

We stumbled upon this restaurant close to our hotel & what a find! A small family run restaurant with traditional Moroccan fare. Friendly service at a gentle pace, very welcoming, tasty food. Great value for money.

A Warm and Wonderful experience.

By Gary A |

Our party of 4 walked in for an early dinner on a rainy afternoon and as we entered we immediately noticed another 4 Top having a colorful assortment of dishes. The smells were tantalizing as we passed the table of happy diners. Our waitress was up beat and genuinely nice. She gave us menus and asked a few questions and gave us some time to decide what to order. As she came to take the order she answered our questions and gave a some of the restaurant's background. The meze plate (various appetizers) and homemade, handmade sandwiches were fresh, loaded with taste and more than enough to eat. After dinner we met the matriarch (in her 80's) one of her many children, and chatted a bit with our waitress, her granddaughter. I can't tell you how nice it was to now only eat good food but to leave a couple of hours later feeling like we just had dinner at a relatives house. We will definitely return for the food and friendship.

Yummy and Busy

By TuckerCanada |

Called to make a reservation and told that it wouldn't be necessary. However, it was very full when we arrived and we managed to get a table right away. Maybe they only take reservations for large groups. We had the appetizer platter to share. It had a big variety of dips and falafel, hot turn overs and was very delicious with the flat bread. We also shared the lamb shank with dried fruits. The lambe was tender and melt in your mouth, the dried fuits (apricots and almonds) had not been stewed with the meat and were a bit too chewy. However, the whole meal was better than average and very flavourful. We would go back.

Place is busy for a reason

By John T |

Monday night and the place was packed and it's easy to see why. Sweet aromatics highlighted authentic Moroccan food served by accommodating servers in a cozy neighborhood spot. Service was a wee bit on the slow side but several large, needy tables could easily have explained that. After all, the food is the thing here. Oh..and the fresh pita was about the size of a large NY pizza - perfect for sopping up anything that might have managed to be left on your plate.

Great option for lunch

By Dave E |

Grab a meat platter and their great pita bread and you have a very satisfying lunch. Well prepared, quick and courteous service, and a good price. Located just a bit from the center of town it is an easy walk from the major hotels or court houses. More upscale than a food cart and a nice place to sit, but hardly more expensive.

Not really moroccan

By Old Pro |

It's pizza or meat on a stick...pretty much. This nice little place must have been started by a proprietor who just couldn't make up his mind what kind of restaurant he wanted. The menu has little in the way of tradition Moroccan cuisine other than the spices involved tend to lean toward North African. Half the menu is pizza selections and the rest are some variation of Shawarma (meat on a stick) mixed into something else. The food is not bad per se...it's just not really Moroccan either. Head over tho the Marrakesh for the real deal. It's not the finest North African fare I've tried but, it's the most authentic Portland has to offer.

Tasty, tangy Moroccan dishes

By yehudah |

We had dinner here the other night with a Groupon and chose to get the specialty dishes. One of the nice offers was an appetizer (full size) for $1.50 with an entree. All the dishes we had were fresh and flavorful. They took over one of Habibi's location and it looks like they kept the decorations in tact, as well as I can remember. Which is fine because they fit in fine and the background of Middle Eastern music is always welcome.

Good Standard Med Food

By SHELLYandBOB |

Alexis was closed on Sunday so we headed on over to Tangier. I had the meat mezza which is like a sampler plate and all of it was good. My sis had the shawarma sandwich which was also good. The bread was okay, a little bland. The decor was nice, but the service was mediocre.

Great "slightly different" Mediterranean flavors!

By HenryW |

We love middle eastern food, and have tried at least five others in Portland, all good. This is now our favorite downtown one. The flavors were wonderful, and there were some different dishes (tangines) that we will want to try. Pita is about the best in the city. Hummus likewise. Soups were seasoned to our liking! Small negative - lamb kabobs were a bit overcooked and tough. We'll ask for rare next time Moroccan coffee pot contained enough for two people. All day happy hour choices are an amazing bargain!

Best Mediterranean restaurant ever!!!

By Eluis I |

I've been to middle eat so I really what is authentic or not. This restaurant serve the most authentic lamb dish. Me and husband really enjoyed eating there plus the ambiance was very good because of the music. The morrocan tea is the best.We were like sitting in a dining table of a sheikh. We will definitely come back here over and over again.

Simply outstanding

By ovolacto |

We were wandering around downtown, and, for some reason, this place caught our eye. We walked in, and we were glad we did. The food here is as good as any of the same type I have enjoyed anywhere. The restaurant itself is kind of small, but it is nice, neatly decorated, and fairly clean. I liked that could look back in the kitchen, and see some old ladies in there who looked like they'd been making this kind of food for years. We had baba ganouj served with a hot pita that was ambrosia on our tongues. The lentil and spinach soup was divine, and the falafel "sandwich" was superb. I loved the mixtures of flavors and textures in every dish we ate. Note - They serve "Sriracha" for their hot sauce, and unlike many, similar restaurants, they have a "full bar." Also, Happy Hour is all day long. If you buy a drink, you can any number of appetizers for half price. It's a pretty good deal.

Truly memorable food

By Simon D |

Excellent spicing of all the different meats. Each meat had its own particular and delicious spicing which made this a truly distinctive and memorable meal. And I have never tasted a Baba Ganush like theirs. Smoky and subtle. If you enjoy Mediterranean style food you will love this restaurant's offerings. Excellent value for money as well!

great food

By Godwilling |

Great soup and appetizers that really will make for a complete meal. The service was a wee bit slow but worth the wait. do not go if you are in a hurry.

Apalling Hostess Behavior

By AceonW |

Unfortunately, we did not even get a chance to eat here. The food looked very good, and we would have loved to try it. We were on a romantic night out on the town, and stopped in this place. It looked nice and had good reviews, so we sat down. The place was mostly empty. The hostess did not notice us at all - she was messing with a child sitting at the hostess stand playing a game on a phone at high volume. So we just seated ourselves. The hostess came over and handed us menus after about 5 minutes. While we were sitting there, the noise from the kid's game was really starting to become annoying, taking away from the romantic ambiance. We politely asked the hostess if the volume could be turned off. She got huffy, but went and turned the volume down, but we could still hear it. Already, we were getting quite uncomfortable. When she came back, again we asked her if she could turn the volume off, and that we were not comfortable at all with it. She told us that she can't stop us from leaving, but she was not going to turn off the volume. We left. The place was empty, and she turned away well-paying customers. It was one of the worst experiences I have had in a restaurant. I have never had someone treat me so rudely, and that experience alone will never have me coming back there.

Outstanding Place!

By GoofballDad |

My family stopped into Tangier one chilly Saturday afternoon, looking for lunch. Boy, did we strike gold. We ordered a variety of things, and it was ALL excellent -- the freshly baked pitas were amazing (still warm from the oven), the hummus was perhaps the best I have ever had, anywhere...and all the various wraps, kabobs, schwarmas, soups, salads and drinks that we had amongst us were just fantastic. It is a good thing I live 700 miles away of they would get sick of me and I'd get fat eating here!

Worth a return trip to try more of the menu

By Tubamom |

We had dinner here on a Sunday evening - it was moderately busy and everyone seemed to be having a good time and enjoying the food. The food is high quality, the menu is varied, and the prices are very reasonable. My husband had one of the casseroles with meat and tomato sauce. I had a dish with a mixture of lentils and rice with chicken shawarma on top. The food was delicious and very filling. The Tangier lemonade is also good - it is not too sweet and comes with a sprig of fresh mint. The service was also great - there was only one server, but she was very efficient and friendly and did a great job. The dishes come out of the kitchen one at a time, so ordering an appetizer is a good idea so everyone has some food when the entrees start to arrive. My office used to be a couple of blocks from here - wish it still was so I could have lunch here!

Great place !

By Christopher W |

Loved it ! Great service ! We had a nice chat with the owner . Will be back when we have more time !

Great food - fun family!

By Mark G |

Enjoyed a delicious dinner and the good company of the family that owns the restaurant. An all round great experience. Next time we're in Portland, we'll go again. They do need to get better organized with their wine.

Poor service and poor quality food.

By Phillip A |

The waitress was unfriendly and always had a stern face. The food (Kebab Combo) was dry and tasteless. There was a bad smell (may be because they had candles burning in the toilet.

Incredible & New Middle Eastern Experience!

By Rony J |

I'm used to Lebanese style food, but this Moroccan food was awesome! The food was delicious & the service was delightful! Very kind employees and the restaurant has a nice, relaxing feel, very clean. I personally would recommend getting the "Tagine of lamb w/ dried fruit". Overall wonderful experience, and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Family makes a special meal.

By NERoadWarrior53 |

Whether it's vegetarian or with chicken/lamb/beef, they cook up a really tasty Mediterranean meal. Portions are above average, they serve alcohol and the young lady server was very accommodating/informed and friendly.

Homesick for Morocco now!

By drsoozie |

My husband was so excited to have dinner at Tangiers. We were in Morocco last Spring to visit our daughter. I have always wanted to go there. The family who runs this restaurant are Moroccan and it shows in their hospitality and their food. It was delicious! We started with hummus which is always so much better than store bought then moved on to a lamb dish where the meat was so tender it fell off of the bone. Because the servings are so generous we didn't even have dessert, but I did save room for the traditional Moroccan Mint tea! The end to a great meal. I don't know about the Mediterranean dishes on the menu because with such wonderful Moroccan food why would you even want pizza???? While it is a restaurant, they make you feel like a member of the family coming into their home...Moroccans are absolutely awesome at hospitality.

Best Lebanese Food

By postinfla |

While searching for a place to eat near the Embassy Suite we found Tangier only one block away. We loved the food so much, we ate here twice while visiting Portland. The humus was fresh, the bread warm, the whole meal was delicious.

Excellent Food

By Alli |

Location has a great menu and we ordered hummas and tzatziki as an appetizer. This came with a pita bread larger than a dinner plate. Everything is homemade and was very good. The male waiter made sure my food was free of allergens including nuts, seafood, fish. I ordered chicken with raisins and rice. A person in our group ordered a Schwarma a chicken sandwich wrap, and he informed me not to eat the sandwich due to my allergies. There was a lady who complained about waiting 30 minutes for food. This is not fast food. Be patient, you will have water to drink while you wait a little bit. The food is worth the wait.

good mezze

we walked by and stopped in only by chance..and were very happy we did! good service and delicious small plates all day happy hour prices for those and alot to choose from!!

Quiet Not Noticeable Downtown Portland Restaurant with Delicious Lamb

By Billyboy2391 |

This restaurant falls off a side street in downtown Portland. It was well recommended by a few associates and didn't let down. Very small restaurant, but does get a ton of take-out orders. I ordered the lamp boned plate with rice and eggplant in a stew. I would strongly recommend this plate, absolutely the best lamb I have had prepared in a restaurant atmosphere. Service was good and I believe the owner was the server. Check it out if ever Downtown.

Very flavorful food, nice atmosphere

By Judy |

We ordered the lamb and artichoke stew, vegetarian mezze plate, and chicken shawarma. Everything was excellent. The mezze plate comes with many interesting sides, like a zaatar pita and a spinach pocket pastry, and they brought out one giant pita for the table. The stew was a little spicy but my teenage daughter still liked it. Overall the flavors were so nice; one of my favorite Mediterranean places I have been to. I would love to go back and try some more of the dishes!

Perfect food, perfect service and great price

By nikhilsinghal |

We had a late lunch at this place today and we were very happy with it. The food was hot, fresh and delicious. The service was amazing. They were constantly checking on us with nice smiles which improved the dining experience. The prices are very reasonable for downtown area. Also, my daughter forgot her coat and the server came running after we had left to hand it back. We will surely be visiting them again.

Yummy morrocan food 😍😍

By Irfy A |

Was recommend this morrocan place from a friend as I told it was a small place, but with a nice warm friendly atmosphere. It's a very lovely place, good for family, friends and for couple, the portions aren't huge and aren't small. Just what I needed in America as the portions are way too big. The food itself is very tasty, not like a restaurant but more like home cooked food which everyone likes. I've tried some restaurants and many have been tasteless. I was really surprised how good the food was. So I recommend you try this place. The people working there are super lovely and you won't be disappointed. My personal favourite is the oven baked chicken with rice ;) but you won't go wrong with the other dishes, my friends tried other dishes and all enjoyed. I will be going there again... So might see you there 👍🏻 Happy Eating people.

Delicious Mediterranean food in a great ambiance

By PMTexas |

I had the small pesto pizza and one falafel as appetizers, both absolutely mouth watering. The main course - a meat platter - was a bang for the buck: lamb, beef kabob and chicken laid on a bed of lemon rice and yogurt sauce. It was on the same level of the finest restaurants in Dubai that I've been dining. The only warning: for traditional American steak lovers, the meat would looks too much well done and seasoned. But it is the way it's supposed to be enjoyed!

Have their fresh lemonade, it's wonderful.

By wimisy |

We wandered into Tangier's looking for lunch and were glad we did. The staff was exceptional and very accommodating. They listed Spaghetti on the menu on the outside and when I went to order it I was told they no longer made it. However, they proceeded to make it for me on the spot and it was nicely done. The fresh lemonade was refreshing. I had them add some vodka to mine and it's a drink I want to try and replicate at home. The place had a good feel to it...serene and very pleasant.

Regulars are welcomed by their first name!

By Peggy B |

The quality of the restaurant can be measured by their repeat customers. Not only did the staff know their "people" by their first name they also remembered their favorite dishes. The ambience of the restaurant will take you to historic Morocco. I ordered the Vegetarian Mezza which included: falafel, humus, tabouli, tatziki, spinach pie, zattar pizza, baba ghannouj, and veggie grape leaves. All the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The secret to a good tabouli is the amount of olive oil and lemon dressing is used. This was perfect. It is by far one of the best places to dine in Portland for Middle Eastern food.

Great food great prices.

By Michael S |

have to give this establishment a five-star rating I must admit I never thought I would like this type of food however I was amazed when we first walked in we were a little bit sketchy based on the location and the place was empty as we sat there the place filled up and the food was out of this world the service was perfect priced right, the atmosphere was great we actually ordered soup twice we will be back again and again.

Good food, great service, nice price.

By apcstac |

We visited this restaurant for dinner on a Sunday. We were a party of 9, including 3 children and we had no problem being seated immediately. Our waitress was very attentive and the food was very good.

Outstanding

By gallwp |

The best chicken leg and thigh ever! The rice was excellent and the small side salad was delish. You couldn't ask for a more pleasant lunch at a very affordable price. The owner came around to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. It more than exceeded our expectation. We had taken a day train trip from Seattle for the day on our vacation. This really made it worth the trip.

No Crips Allowed ...

By C J E |

Attempted to go to this restaurant. Found the entrance has a 4" step that, using an electric wheelchair, I could not traverse. The message I got was that my patronage wasn't wanted.

Reeeaaal Good Food

By travelisfunforus |

Food was Fresh, Prepared just for you fresh. We ordered Chicken Kebabs and hummus platter. The bread was baked fresh and was served straight out of the oven. The main course was equally awesome and the owners ( I believe ) were very attentive and friendly. A must go restaurant if you are in the pearl district/Rose quarter area.

Much better than I thought it would be.

By resipsaloquitur |

Not too impressive on the outside and normally I don't particularly like Moroccan food, but a bunch of friends decided to go there because it was close to our hotel. I was very happy with the food. Got the lamb sandwich, which was more like a wrap, but quite tasty. The stewed fava beans also excellent. The spinach pie was great especially when combined with a yogurt sauce.

Neat place downtown

By Courtney1978 |

This restaurant had authentic mediterranean cuisine and a lot of selection. We were looking for something different and interesting and this was the place. We had the tatzaiki appetizer and were pleasantly surprised when it come out with home made pita bread! I had the meat mezze platter (since I have a hard time making one decision this was the perfect choice!), the portions were VERY generous, well priced for the value. My dinner companions had the chicken and rice and both were very pleased with their meals.

Hit the spot

Went with friends with different dietary needs. All of us had a great meal. The hummus with freshly made pita was absolutely amazing. The service was fairly quick and the Turkish coffee was perfect.

Destination: Morocco

By CARLYE P |

I was here when the name of the former restaurant was still on the walls and I've been back several times. After the first couple of times I decided that it was good enough to travel to, not just stop by when I was in the area (I live in NE). Service as excellent as the food.

Delicious traditional style Moroccan food and great service

By Victor W |

Stopped by here early evening when passing through Portland for the afternoon and couldn't be happier with the choice. I picked this based off of the proximity to where we were parked in Portland and the good reviews on TripAdvisor and Google Reviews. Brought my parents here for dinner and everyone enjoyed it. I ordered a lamb shawarma sandwich and my parents ordered the lamb shawarma plate with rice and humus and a kafta sandwich. All the dishes were very savory and the service was quick. I tried there mint lemonade which was pretty good and their homemade peach yogurt drink which was delicious. Having lived in Cairo, Egypt and been to Casablanca, Marrakech, and Rabat on numerous occasions I was surprised that the food in this restaurant reminded me of the local food I have tried in Morocco and Northern Africa. I've lived in the US for the past 10 years and this is the best Moroccan food I've had here. The dishes we tried were simple, authentic, full of flavor which made for an excellent meal. Next time I'll pass by Oregon I'll plan for a longer stay and definitely come back to sample more of their menu choices. As others on trip advisor stated, this restaurant is a hidden gem in a part of town which doesn't necessarily invite to visit but it's worth the trip and you won't be disappointed. The decor is nice, the restaurant is inviting and the service is equally great. The restaurant is a family business run by a mother and her two daughters. The two daughters were in charge of the restaurant when we came; one was serving while the other prepared and cooked. Hats off to them for running a great restaurant which I look forward to visit the next time I pass by Portland. Overall, a great restaurant which is definitely worth your time if your looking for a nice little place in the heart of Portland.

Good service, great food, nice ambiance

By RWAJ08 |

I went here for lunch with a coworker and we both got the vegetarian mezze platter. It was good and a generous size for the price. Cute, smallish restaurant with good service and tons of vegetarian, vegan, and meat options. Happy hour all day according to the menu.

Weeknight Dinner

By JDG19781983 |

This place is great! Let me start with the service. The service here is outstanding, we ate here twice during our week visiting Portland and were not disappointed. The food was good as well. The baba ghannouj was incredible, as well as the pita bread. My wife had the hummus and sings its praises. I also enjoyed the shawarma plate, it was amazing. My wife recommends the falafel sandwich. We recommend a visit to Tangier when in Portland.

Very good lunch

By ReiseTorgeir |

I was on my own and just wanted a quick lunch - although a decent one. Using TripAdvisor, the Tangier popped up as the nearest one, and I must admit that it really came through. The chicken was well prepared, the hostess very forthcoming, and a salad was on the table almost before I was seated. Highly recommended!

Just go and see what it's all out...so worth it.

By Alisa L |

I'm from out of town and always try to find new places to eat when I'm here. Spent a good amount of time determining where to go to dinner with my friend. We finally decided to come here just based the reviews. The place definitely lived up and even exceeded our expectations. Upon entering, we were given a very warm welcome and were greeted by the owner. I originally ordered the...actually I can't remember, but it was lamb based because I was in the mood for lamb. The owner suggested the lamb tagine once he learned how much I enjoyed lamb. So I ordered the lamb tagine with dried fruits (apricot, prunes, and almonds). It looked so delicious when it arrived at the table, I completely forgot to even take a picture and never remembered what I originally wanted to order. The meat was falling off of the bone...deliciously tender and full of flavor. The fruits were very good and the rice was scrumptious as well. My friend ordered the lamb shawarma, but when the food came to our table, a plate of chicken shawarma showed up. The owner quickly came out and apologized, told us to enjoy the chicken shawarma and had a new plate of lamb shawarma in minutes! Both were perfectly seasoned and sat atop a very delicious hummus. Everything was extremely fresh and you could tell the dishes were made with the utmost care and attention to detail. Had the shawarma mix-up not occurred, there would not have been any leftovers, whatsoever, even with the intention of saving some food. Bonus - the water is served with a slice of cucumber which only enhances every other flavor in all of their dishes. Next time I'm in town, I will definitely be stopping in Tangier!

Good food and friendly service

By LoveTravel544018 |

The food was very good and came out at a timely pace. The owner/server was very nice and gave us some free Pita and Humus. Nice atmosphere with Natural Light in one section and a darker area too.

Awesome Dinner

By Runner100 |

The menu has a wide selection of Moroccan and Mediterranean dishes, so many that it is difficult to decide what to order. The service was just a little slow, but the food was cooked fresh and served hot. I ordered an eggplant stew with grilled chicken and a generous serving of rice on the side while my companion ordered the vegetarian Mezza platter. The servings were huge and unbelievably flavorful. I love Middle Eastern foods and the dinner was as good, if not better, than any like meal I have ever had. I am already planning a return visit.

A friendly restaurant

By Salamanca208 |

We enjoyed our visit to Tangier Moroccan. The food was not the best I have ever had, but it was good. The staff was incredibly friendly and their smiles made my day.

Definitely shareable entrees!

By linda m |

I had the freshest, warmest bread ever and just appetizers but I had more than enough to share. Lots of choices!

Great Food in Portland

By TheWorldisYours |

I have been to Morocco and found Tangier to be as close to authentic as you will get in the states. The food was flavorful, succulent and overall really well made. The lamb and chicken were superb. Service was also good. Highly recommended.

Tasty food!!!

By Catherine N |

We had a craving for kabobs and found this place. Lunch was excellent! The chicken kabobs were melt in your mouth. Wish I lived in Portland to try the whole menu.

Excellent Mediterranean place

By 331 |

Probably our best lunch of our entire trip. Family run restaurant. The baba ghanoosh and the other dips with freshly baked pita were outstanding. There were some Moroccan specialties that were unfamiliar to us but very tasty. Comfortable dining room. Very highly recommended.

Rainy day outing

By Kathy S |

Good friendly service fun Love the decor. Food had great taste especially the fresh pita will return

Great pita bread

By Travel-World101 |

Huge, hot, soft pita bread that was obviously homemade. Best part of dinner. We were party of six. Chicken kebab was good. Meat combo does not include kebab, so that was disappointing. Soup was lukewarm when served, so suggests they microwaved it. Owner was so nice. Gave us full size tic TAC containers of mints on departure. Many pluses, but I think better cuts of meat and fresh soup would be good

Best Moroccan Food I've Had Outside of Morocco!

By Michelle R |

This place is amazing. It is family run, all the staff are very friendly and helpful, even one of the small girls of the family likes to come and say hi and help give out menus. The food is delicious! I've lived in Morocco, and my husband is Moroccan, so I feel that I have a pretty good idea about the food, and this is the best I've had outside the country! I went once with a friend and liked it so much I had my bachelorette party there as well.

Excellent food, and good service.

By Brad L |

Great Mediterranean food with delicious variations on the standard food themes. The atmosphere is nice, and service is good. The pita that they offer comes in huge pieces and it is delicious. It is not the standard feather light pita, but it is delicious none the less. Overall, a great little restaurant that I'd definitely visit again.

Value for money +++

By thesiscoekid |

This a well run great restaurant, as only you will find in a family run restaurant, they take pride in their work. The restaurant was close to the hotel. Sit away from the front door as there was breeze and it was cold.

Enjoyed this restaurant

By F F |

Very nice authentic food! Kabobs and more! We enjoyed it very much! Lots of traveling we do and this restaurant is run by an authentic family making authentic food! Worth a trip.

Outstanding

By Janine W |

My boyfriend and I stopped in to have lunch there when we were visiting Portland for a wedding. We were so impressed with the food and the quality of service. It’s a great place for reasonable fare and authentic Mediterranean/Moroccan food. We loved it so much that we ended up going back again during our five-day stay. Highly recommend it to anyone. Family run and it’s a joy to see three generations n the kitchen.

Service and food were excellent!

By P.j |

Food was very tasty and fresh as well as catering for Vegan and Vegetarian diets. Service was excellent with explanations of what is what and suggestions on mixing and matching! Will definitely visit again when in Portland!

Very good!

By HanSolo1955 |

First time at Tangier for dinner. Very very good food. Friendly service. My husband liked the chicken lentil soup so much he had two servings, along with a meat mezza platter that was delicious. The pita bread was awesome. Open 7 days a week. Will definitely return to check out the the other menu offerings!

Delicious dinner, great service

By slpearce10 |

Amazing authentic food. The service was quick, the staff was very kind and attentive. Would definitely recommend for a casual meal.

the most positively surprising food experience in our 4week trip

By Thomas M |

had the olive&lemon chicken and must say it was probably the best chicken i had, definitely the best for just 14bucks. so tasty and juicy, unbelivable. the owner is really nice, explains the whole menu. we werent sure whether we like moroccan cuisine but were really happy to have tried this place!

Delicious & nice ambiance.

By hapytigr |

The only reason I did not give it five stars was the one waitress was not very attentive and seemed distracted but she was very nice. This is one of those "in the alley smaller hidden restaurants" with a wonderful ambience and fantastic food. It was very traditionally Moroccan, the lamb stew was very flavorful and the"heat"came at the end as it should, portions were more than plentiful. Flatbread was fresh and delicious. Treat yourself and have the baklava.

Hummus Among Us!

By Wayne M |

What an amazingly beautiful day in Portland! We roamed around Oldtown/Chinatown for awhile, stopped in a few interesting stores, including an awesome bookstore that takes up an entire block! Great way to get to know a bit of the city. Who would have thought we would find such an amazing Mediterranean restaurant? But we did. Tangier has an excellent selection of vegetarian options. The bread is made in their kitchen, and it is to die for! The hummus catches the right balance of garlic and is oh so creamy. We each had a different sandwich, and both were delicious — the Falafel and the Lebney — and great choices. The staff are very friendly and completely unobtrusive. Ambience is lively but we could easily carry on a conversation. All things considered, this was a great choice. I highly recommend it.

Always at its best

By peggjegrosh |

Any time of day this restaurant is consistently excellent. Clearly one of Portland's best restaurants.

OUTSTANDING

By peggjegrosh |

This is one, if not the best, restaurant in Portland. Consistently good any time of the day. And don't forget the baklava for dessert. The best!

Dinner in Portland

By Seattlesavvy20 |

I come to Portland twice a year on business alone. Stay often at the Embassy Suites on Pine. Tangier is less than a block away and fantastic! Family run and just lovely. I can't wait to go back to Portland and have dinner with them again.

They try hard

By Swissabroad |

This is authentic food cooked by a young Moroccan woman and served by her brother. What you get is quite tasty but not all items on the menu are always available. They try hard to please with varying degree of success. Service can be quite slow.

Fantastic Morocccan food

By LotusLauren |

This meal was flawless. We had the vegetarian appetizer mezze - highly recommend this assortment of dips (hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki) and nibbles (tabouli salad, falafel, stuffed grape leaf, bread with za'atar, and the most delicious lime-ish spinach puff). The lamb tagine with fruits was lightly flavored with cinnamon, meat melting off the bone. The whole meal was absolutely authentic and perfectly cooked, service was excellent. Good value, too.

lovely downtown Portland lunch spot

By HalynaClaudia |

What a treat! Friendly, attentive service, tasty food with generous portions at a very reasonable price. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here and highly recommend it.

Great discovery

By Todd Y |

Tangier was an unexpected discovery. It was located within walking distance of our hotel. It was some of the absolute best Mediterranean food we've ever had. Family owned and run, everything is made on the premises. The chicken shawarma was tender, full of warm spices and not overly lemony. The dolmas were excellent. The flavor of the grape leaf and rice complimented each other well, not overwhelmed by being too oily or lemony. Be sure to save room for the bakalava. It was the best ever. Not super sweet, the flavor of the rose water comes through delicately. There were lots of pistachios and just the right balance of honey for sweetness. The service was very friendly, helpful and efficient. I can't wait to return to Portland and eat here again. Highly recommended!!!!

Moroccan feast

By Anne T |

Ended up in this place by accident but that turned out to be a good thing. Food is really good and you not only can get Moroccan but also Mediterranean dishes which we didn't try. Would definitely come back if I'm in Portland again.

Everything Was Delicious

By Maryann L |

This restaurant was near our hotel and looked interesting so our foursome went there for dinner. We were not disappointed. It is a family restaurant serving authentic Moroccan food as well as calzone and pizza. We tried several dishes: veggie grape leaves, cabbage rolls, Moroccan chicken, lamb kababs and Majadra. Everything was well prepared and wonderfully seasoned. Service was attentive. There is a full bar, take out and delivery service. And, prices are reasonable.

Lunch at Tangier's in Portland

By shirley_says |

This is a small restaurant. Seems like it is ran by the family. It was a bit drafty inside. However the food was fabulous. The soup was incredible and the huge pita bread was excellent. If you get a chance, you just have to try this place. I am definitely going back. Probably a reservation is a good idea.

Awesome Meal and Great Price

By Deanna D |

We were looking for a nice meal and found it here. The food tasted great and fresh. We will come back! Loved it. From Montana.

Not disappointed

By Bryan cool |

I was going to dine in but because of the covid 19 pandemic and only to go orders were allowed. I got moroccan chicken with fried eggplants and rice it was so flavorful and I loved it. I will be back whenever iam in town.

Interesting menu

By ORMum |

Food is very flavorful and interesting. We had the appetizer mezza plate, and the baba ghanoush and hummus were very flavorful. They had several vegetarian options as well, which were all delicious. Definitely try the tamarind drink, it was excellent. For dessert, we tried the rice pudding, which was delicious! Highly recommend.

Simple setting and OK food

By PMTexas |

The setting is very disappointing, borderline spartan: you have the impression of the whole furniture is second-hand. There is almost no decoration and no ambient music either. The service is good, not awesome, especially knowing the restaurant is not a cheap eat. The portions served when the dish has any kind of meat are really small for the price paid. The food - unfortunately - is just OK, very uncommon for Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine, always delivering gourmet and delicious options. Perhaps is the quality of the ingredients or the cook, but it is not an amazing food. The homemade bread served is simply amazing, though.

Rocked Our Morracan

By LizCordoba |

We took my Moroccan mother-in-law to Tangier and we all loved it. I totally recommend the stuffed cabbage appetizer, the super fresh flat bread and the vegan spinach lentil soup. The pickled spinach in the savory lentil soup was a tasty surprise. My mom-in-law loved her lamb tagine too. I can't wait to return next time we come back to Portland.

Beautifully Authentic Moroccan Food

By bjayzz |

I found this family run restaurant by reading some chat on here and it was phenomenal. I visited with 5 other friends and each one of us had a thoroughly pleasant experience. It's a modest little place but very comfortable and has a lovely atmosphere. There appeared to be at least x3 generations cooking, serving and taking orders and everyone was really friendly and accommodating. The food is simple but absolutely delicious. The pita / humus and the Moroccan chicken were remarkable. I have never visited Tangier or indeed Morocco but if this is the standard of food I can expect -then I'm right up for a trip. Av it! (YES pls)

Wonderful food

By russkwtx |

This restaurant is an absolute gem. We abandoned our plan to eat only seafood while in Portland and decided to try this Moroccan restaurant, which is one of our favorite foods. I went for a bunch of appetizers: humus, cabbage rolls, falafel, and shwarma chicken. Wow, everything was simply outstanding. The hummus was excellent, the cabbage rolls were excellent, the falafel and shwarma chicken were among the best I ever had. Add some fresh, super light pita bread and you have yourself a feast. They have happy hour prices all day so I ordered from that menu and the prices were very reasonable. The hummus and cabbage rolls for example were only $2.99 and the falafel only $1. The wife got the lamb shank with dried fruits and it was unbelievably tender and juicy. The meat fell off the bone, and the flavor was nothing short of phenomenal. She was groaning in ecstasy as she worked her way through the shank. The service was spot on and friendly. I don't understand the unfavorable reviews and think those people may be difficult in any setting. This restaurant is an absolute must-try when you are in Portland. You will not regret it.

Lots of choices

By estra1 |

Lots of choices on menu. Flavours of kebab and meat plates are nice. Service average but prices are very reasonable. Worth a drop if you like tahini or hummus flavours. It may be overrated as I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. No dessert options except rice pudding. Again the menu has a lot of options like calzones , pasta too so it caters for all tastes.

Great food

By Rossland58 |

If you like Lebanese or Turkish food, you will enjoy this place. A pretty unassuming restaurant but very friendly staff. The place was very quiet when we went and the service very quick. The portions are large and super tasty. If you are not feeling hungry, don't order a starter. We had the lamb shanks and Moroccan chicken as mains and they were both delicious.

Great Moroccan Food!

By MzVee |

I had the Meat Mezza and the Bakoula. I also sampled some of the other food at my table, and had baklava for dessert. EVERYTHING was delicious, and the staff was incredibly friendly.

Tangier is a great restaurant

By Katie A |

We went as a group of 4 friends (Girls just want to have lunch as Weird Al says) and the food was wonderful. The lamb dish was so tasty and falling off the bone tender. The 3D art work on the walls was amazing too. Two of us shared a dish and the portion was large enough that we both felt satisfied with what we had. The service was great and the owner told us about his story how he came to be in Portland. We'll go there again with our spouses.

Home cooking

By Kathryn G |

The charm of this restaurant is that it is truly family-owned and operated. The grandmother and mother are in the kitchen, and the kids (siblings and cousins) are working the front of the house. The food was simple Mediterranean (Middle Eastern) cooking - hummus, zattar pizza, shawarma, kafta, etc.

As good as Moroccan food gets

By smallisbeautiful |

In our party of three, one ordered lamb, another kafta, and I had a mixed-meat platter. We argued over which was best, decided all three of us won. Next time we'll try the tagine. The huge, fresh-baked pita that all of us could share was a special and tasty treat. Quiet, friendly, homey, low-key ambience, warm and inviting on a cool, rainy night. Location on quiet street, easy walking distance from most parts of downtown. The modest price was an aid to digestion; less than $70, drinks and tip included.

Yummy!

By nancyandmike2013 |

Just drove from vancouver bc - 1st stop on our way to Palm Springs and we wanted good, fresh, hot food - and that's what we got! All I can say is.... yummy! We recommend you get some side dishes when you order your mains (look at back page) FYI - the tabouleh is delicious!

Great food. But needs more customers.

By CaptainNonno |

I had read many positive reviews about this place, and it is only a half a block from the hotel I was staying at, so I had to go. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated. (Almost too nice for the neighborhood.) I actually went there two nights in a row because the food was both very good and reasonably priced. The first night I was a little hesitant to go in because it was around 7:00 p.m. and there were absolutely no customers. I decided to give it a try and was glad that I did. I had an eggplant and tomato (both ground together) appetizer. I basically scooped it up with the provided pita bread. It was very delicious. For the main course I had a lamb shank. Very tender and tasty. I ended it with a Turkish coffee, which was good, but a little on the weak side. While I was there some additional customers showed up, but they all seemed to be friends of the owners. The second night I went a bit earlier; at 5:00. Again, I was the only one there. Some people did come later on, and they actually seemed like real customers, not friends of the owners. This second time I had an excellent lentil soup and a lamb kebab. The lamb was tasty, but I was a little surprised that the skewers were all lamb and absolutely no vegetables. It did come on a bed of rice, so no complaints. I finished off again with the Turkish coffee. On both nights I had a draft IPA. I don't recall the name, but it was very good. I do hope this place makes it because the food is very good and reasonably priced. But if my experience is indicative of an average evening, I don't think this place will be around long. Too bad.

Nice, but lacking

By William B |

Coming from an area where we have no Moroccan restaurants, I was really looking for a great one. I lived near the Latin Quarter in Paris where there were many excellent Moroccan restaurants and had high hopes. I mostly felt the menu was lacking. I had a wonderful lamb and olive dish, but it came with French fries, not cous cous. The eggplant appetizer was my favorite of the dishes, Pleasant staff and nice atmosphere.

We Loved This Place

By Eric S |

We stumbled onto Tangier by chance, and we were glad we did. We were in Morocco last year, and the food at this restaurant very much reminded us of what we had in Fez and Meknes. The ingredients and the preparation were very authentic and the portions were generous. The Moroccan portion of the menu (they have other cuisines as well) was small, but good. We had a chance to chat with the family that owns and runs this restaurant. They are Moroccan and have great pride in their food and restaurant. We will be back the next time we're in Portland.

Small Gem with Good Food

By Wanda M |

I had lunch here while waiting to catch a train. The service was quick but attentive. The food was delicious and portions were generous. There are several samplers that offer a taste on many dishes that are an excellent way to acquaint yourself with their cuisine. This is not a tourist trap but is right around the corner from Voodoo Donuts.

Good food, good service!

By TravelDoorsOut |

Authentic Moroccan food with great service. Very upsetting they had a window broken during riots as this seems like a family business. Highly recommend this place for a cool atmosphere, good food, and good service. Great job guys!

A very nice specialty restaurant

By doddsnarrows |

Our group of four enjoyed a very pleasant dinner at this family-run establishment where the strengths are the cooking and the attentive but not intrusive service. Not everyone would be comfortable with the size of the restaurant or the quality of the furnishings. It is clean and has topical and tasteful decorations but some areas are a bit cramped and feel even more so if the next table has a couple of "precocious" toddlers. In our party the lamb tagine and the Moroccan olive chicken were all admired as was the soup. Would have tried the interesting looking desserts but were pretty much driven off by the disruption at the next table. If we were to go again would probably eat a bit later, after eight or so (not 6:30) and hope for a better atmosphere.

Terrific

By Wallawallaeater |

This great spot was conveniently down the street from our hotel and we were hungry for a treat. Seeing reviews for this place, we made a beeline for Tangiers. We only were interested in a drink and appetizers and they graciously helped us find just the right combination of treats. You have got to see the house made pita!!! Huge and served steaming hot and puffy. What a delight. Every bite was amazing. We had a terrific cocktail to enjoy with the snacks. Only regret? We did not stay for dinner!! Great atmosphere. Gracious service with the nicest waitstaff. We will be back as their menu is chocked full of delicious sounding dishes. Don't miss a chance to enjoy a meal here.

Great Moroccan food in Portland

By Peter S |

In Portland for the weekend and visited this restaurant based on online reviews with our group of six . Very pleased with our experience. The food was excellent and service attentive and friendly. A cozy little spot. We had several dishes all of them delicious. The owner and chef stopped by our table and chatted. It seems she brings back many of the spices she uses from Morocco as she can't get them locally. We liked it so much we went back the next day. We'll be back the next time we are in Portland.

Fantastic find!

By Regina M |

My husband and I recently visited Portland for the first time, and we found this little gem while exploring the city on foot. It is a family business with phenomenal food and a full bar. We had the lamb kabob with rice and lamb shwarma wrap. The kabob came with a salad that had a lovely tahini dressing. The rice was the perfect compliment to the kabob and yummy garlic dip it came with. The wrap had a creamy tzatziki sauce that tasted delicious. We will be sure to come back next time we are in town.

Fantastic

Friendly restaurant with delicious food

By Judith G |

Five of us had dinner/dessert on a Thursday night. Service was warm, welcoming, and food tasty and plentiful. Wine menu very limited.

I guess they weren’t looking for customers.

By Brett J |

I stopped in on a Thursday evening at 6:20 pm. There was a group eating in the back. A. Lady from the group looked up like I was intruding. A young woman came up and apologized saying they were closed. Hours are 11 to 9. Bad business model. I won’t be back.

Ah-mazing

By Lotus_Hiker7 |

I grew up in the Middle East so it was great to get FRESH well made food. It was my husband's first time eating arabic food and it was so great being able to say, "this tastes just like home!" We ordered a vegetarian mezza, schwarma and falafel and we could have just ordered the message and 1 wrap and been fine. I was stuffed with 2. The service was friendly and again was fabulous!! MUST Eat here is you would like to try or love love Mediterranean food!!

Family cozy and splendid flavors

By Paul J |

This great spot in Portland is ideal for those seeking great food - either meat eaters or vegetarians will love the menu. Start with the Moroccan eggplant appetizer and grape leaves for a hint of the great flavors to come, then dive into moist and well spiced olive chicken. The folks hosting you will make you feel at home.

Great authentic Morrocan

By Alice Sydney |

This is a terrific place for an authentic Moroccan meal- where you can try a huge variety of dishes for not much money- it is extremely well priced, the food is well prepared - we sampled many items, including hummus, lebney, greek salad , keftah, rice , and the most amazing pita bread - puffy and larger than a dinner plate!

Perfectly prepared

By Kirsten M |

Ordered through grubhub. Food was amazing. Heat texture. Perfectly well prepared. Will definitely order again soon.

Excellent Eats

By TravelJunkySoCal |

We stumbled upon this little gem and had an early dinner. Everything was very tasty and exceeded expectations. I would recommend you eat here if you are in the area!

Excellent food!

By goshan |

Loved the food here - we happened to be in the neighborhood and were attracted by the wonderful flavors emanating from the restaurant. We checked the reviews and decided to go for the takeout, and it didn't disappoint - the rice was amazing! Hopefully, the place makes it through these turbulent times!

a foodie favorite

By EsmeEats |

The extensive menu offers items I've never had at a Moroccan restaurant as well as some of my favorites, all of it is amazing! The family recipes are prepared with care and are true (not conservative). I love eating lots of different things so my daughter and I usually share a Mezza Plate and then order additional items from the ALL DAY HAPPY HOUR menu :) and then we look forward to the our array of late night snacks (the portions are quite generous)! This review is making me hungry. I am literally going to finish my lunch in the restaurant I am sitting in and drive to Portland in time to make it to a late dinner at Tangier!!!

In one word: Excellent!!

By Tal444 |

We were looking for a nice, good restaurant to have dinner with our three kids. Since we like Mediterranean food we decided on this restaurant. It was such a good experience - the food was amazing!! Everything that was set on the table was so tasty and fresh. It is a family owned business and they are so nice. If we're in Portland again, we're defiantly coming back.

A Delicious Delight

By Katherine J |

Starving and wanting to avoid the 1 hour waits at most restaurants, my husband and I stumbled across Tangier's Moroccan & Mediterranean restaurant. In peeking in the window, we saw that there was a large party in the back of the restaurant and several occupied tables, but there appeared to be room for us to be immediately seated. Upon being seated, our server - who may have also been the owner, came by to take our order. In wanted a lamb dish and our server suggested what turned out to be the best meal I've eaten in a very long time. My husband sampled several dishes and we were pleased with everything. Oh, I wanted at cosmo or the sort for a drink. When our server seemed uncertain of how to make it, he suggested another drink which was not only deliciously refreshing, but being made with cucumber and mint added the perfect compliment to my meal. The restaurant, service, meals and portions were all amazing. We were absolutely shocked by our final bill of $35! Nowhere in San Francisco could we have gotten so much food and two drinks for that amount. We highly recommend Tangiers for groups, families, couples or anyone else who wants to enjoy an traditional Morroccan meal prepared to perfection in a beautiful setting with the most gracious staff and host ever!

Tangier Authentic Taste

By Glcollar |

OK, so we live part time in PDX. But, no matter how spoiled for choice we are here, TANGIER IMPRESSED! We ordered in, and had our ‘socks knocked off’ by the absolute quality and taste of this Mediterranean masterpiece!! Hummus, Kebabs, Veg App.... all awesome! You really have to try this one!! We’ll be back soon!

A wonderful, quiet restaurant

By Alexander Z |

Discovered this restaurant while visiting Portland with two friends. There was actually a closed sign in the window (that said "Nope!"), but the staff sitting by the window waved us in anyways. We were immediately warmly greeted and seated. The tabouli was good, and we were given an enormous loaf of fresh-baked pita bread, and I enjoyed the kafta casserole, though it was a bit overly heavy on the tomato sauce.

Excellent food, Great service

By Smita M |

We were staying in the nearby Embassy Suites and happened upon this restaurant. The service was prompt and the server made great recommendations. Portions are large. Starters were accompanied by a hot, fresh off the grill super sized pita. We had sweet mint tea which was refreshing and delicious, although some might find it a tad too sweet. The lamb majadra was excellent as was the salad.

Favorite lunch spot

By drinky |

This is a favorite lunch spot of me and my friends. The spinach and lentil soup is wonderful, lemony, creamy, delicious, adorned with lemon soaked pine nuts, and it's vegan. The vegan mezza is our favorite. The chickpea dish is creamy, garlicky goodness! Other items we have tried on the menu are very good as well. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is nice. It seems like it would be a good place for happy hour or dinner as well. They regularly offer deal through Groupon & similar sites - we buy one every time.

The best Mediterranean food around!

By jdog7772 |

I've traveled to the Middle East and this beats any of the food I had there! The drinks were not mixed the best but poured strong. Its family owned and they are very personable, Yusuf was great!

Great Halal Food Near Embassy Suites

By dml8a |

A nice restaurant very close to the downtown Embassy Suites in Portland, OR on a business trip so I had takeout to enjoy in our room.

Excellent - amazing food, friendly service and great value!

By sunstarVancouver |

My husband and I enjoyed the most amazing meal at this family run restaurant while visiting Portland and would thoroughly recommend it! The service was friendly and well paced and the food deliciously fresh and authentic with the most amazing and subtle blend of flavours. I had the baba ganoush served with the most amazing pita bread followed by lamb tagine and it was by far one of the best meals I've ever enjoyed and all at such reasonable prices. I wish we could find something as good as this back in our home town as it would be a regular 'go to' place for us. We will definitely go back should we visit Portland again, in fact it could become a reason for us to visit again! I encourage anyone to try this restaurant, I'm sure you won't regret it.

Wonderful taste of the Mediterranean, well done

By Renee B |

I was visiting my mother in Portland and we decided to try something different from our usual salad lunches. I am leaving for Morocco next week and the reviews of Tangier got me thinking about my next trip. We found easy parking on the street right in front. This small restaurant did a great job of every dish we ordered. Starting with the grape leaves with rice in a simple lemon sauce. The tabouli salad had th eight ratio of parsley to bulgar and a hint of mint. When the dishes arrived a woman carried out the most beautiful pita bread fresh from the oven. There were 4 of us and we shared the dishes with plenty to go around. The chicken and eggplant was served with a dish of fluffy rice and a sauce that we scooped up with the warm pita. The place is charming, clean and the whole family is right there to make sure we were getting enough. When we finished the mint tea was served with fresh mint in the cup. They made our lunch very special and the value for the meal can not be beat. This is not fancy just excellent food and service.

Fantastic!

By Jen G |

I just had dinner here with my husband and two kids and all I can say is... wow! We had Tabuli salad, a dip called Tarator and Moroccan baked chicken with rice. Portions were nice, every dish was beautifully seasoned, not too salty, and everything tasted so fresh. The chef/ owner came table to table making sure everyone was happy and there was a very friendly vibe to the place. It was busy for a Wednesday evening but service was very good as well. Highly recommend!

Great food, reasonable price!

By SusanLLosAngeles |

We ate at this terrific, family owned middle eastern restaurant on a recent trip to Portland. The food and service were great and the prices very reasonable. As one reviewer mentioned, they brought out a plate of hummus and pita, on the house, and it and everything else were delicious. The brother and sister were both very welcoming and we had a lovely experience.

We had lunch here based on the high ranking in TA. The food was mediocre. We tried falafel, Gyro and a chicken skewer with rice. All the food was just fair. The service was also just fair. It seems like the staff were family and were not really experienced at dealing with restaurant patrons.

Super delicious

Wow that was quite fantastic. The bread, hummus, chicken & lamb were amazingly good. A nice little restaurant. I will definitely go back.

Good value and fresh flavors

This feels like a family place in all the right ways with grandma in the kitchen, young children running around. Good quality for a reasonable price.

great lunch on our way to the Rose Garden

We enjoyed our meal here. the meat plate had a sample of just about everything. The pita bread came out and impressed the children. It was warm and expanded into a large hollow loaf.

Loved the food!

I loved this restaurant. Inexpensive and the best chicken shwarma I've ever had. They have quite a large menu for a small restaurant.

Outstanding Food

If you like Mediterranean or Middle Eastern food this is a great choice. Fabulous falafel and Hummos and Pita Especially good was the salad dressing!

Overrate!

Food average. Service very friendly but slow. I received my lamb kabob at the same time as we got the bill AND after I was done with my mezza! Very annoying! Also, a bit of a rip off. Veg mezza platter was a small pile of tabouli, a few sauces and 1 falafel ball for $10.95! Ambiance nice but the place was loud. Not cozy.

What a Treat!

When searching for restaurants near our hotel, we were happy to find the Tangier Moroccan to be just around the corner from the Portland Embassy Suites. The restaurant's decor is lovely and the food is awesome. If you haven't had the opportunity to try Moroccan food, highly recommend that you try it at this restaurant. All the ingredients tasted fresh. In addition, we received outstanding customer service. Thanks again to Tripadvisor and the reviewers to pointing us to this great restaurant.

Some good, some not so much

Friday night, place was only 1/3 full. Went there based on TR and Google reviews. Might have caught an off-night. The good: Shawarma lentil soup with lamb: Hot, flavorful. Falafel: Hot, crispy, outstanding. Some of the best I've had. Spinach Pie and Zattar Pizza: Fresh, hot, outstanding, very flavorful. Vegetarian Mezza Plate size: Ample food for a full meal, good Quality/Price ratio. The service ... Nice little family restaurant with everyone friendly and pitching in. The average: Both Baba Ghanoush and Hummus were very mild (not necessarily a bad thing if you like them that way). Tzaziki was more like plain yoghourt with very little cucumber and very little mint/spices. The not-so-good: Everyone raves about the pita bread. Mine was cool and hard - definitely a leftover. I should have traded it in but didn't think of it at the time. Moroccan wine: I've had a lot. Traveled Morocco extensively. They make some awesome stuff. This was not one of those. And a smallish glass for 11$ ... not appropriate. Based on everyone's reviews I'd probably go back and give them another chance IF there weren't so many other interesting places in Portlandia to try...

Can't go wrong

If you like true Moroccan food, then this is the place. My son was with us and he has been to Morocco, he was very impressed. Everything we ordered was made fresh, the pita bread included. Hummus, baba ganouj and tzatziki were amazing. The cabbage rolls were excellent. The chicken casserole in red sauce was very good, as was the olive chicken. The simple flan for dessert was perfect. The service was friendly and attentive. The only complaint is that the grape leaves, although very tasty, were a little tough.

Stop for Starters

We were hungry with dinner a few hours off, so we stopped for some appetizers. We got hummus, the Zatar pizza and cabbage rolls. The pita bread that came with the hummus was the size of a small satellite dish. Wow! Everything tasted great. The service was fast and pleasant.

Our latest tasty find

My hubby and I recently took a trip to Portland to get our ‘city fix’. It’s been six years since our last trip and many of our favorite eateries have since closed, the traffic seems to have tripled and the homeless situation has blown itself out of proportion. Tents were scattered everywhere along roadsides and freeways and even some residential streets. But we forged on. Progressive Portlanders are tolerant of their inconveniences and remain friendly and enthusiastic when it comes to all things Portlandish, i.e. books, thrift shops, art and of course food. So after a day fighting traffic on the freeways, speeds which never seem to exceed 30 mph, we ventured into the famous Saturday Market where we wandered through stalls of some of the most talented group of artisans Portland has to offer, all in an outdoor sunny setting by the Columbia River. We listened to singers who should have recording contracts and watched as one fellow use spray paint to create the most other-worldly cityscapes with the use of only spray paint, paint can lids, putty knives, fingers (sans gloves) and paper laid out on the ground (also sans breathing mask which I would not recommend). In minutes he produced a beautiful multi-layered masterpiece before sitting back to smoke a cigarette and watch the crowds. I hope he has good healthcare! After several hours of wandering we decided to get a bite to eat. We headed for The Bistro just a few blocks away, a very busy place where I assume you can get burgers and other common food which I’m sure is very good. But we hate crowds and they looked full up. I spotted a sandwich board on the corner and immediately veered right and found Tangiers, a Moroccan/Mediterranean restaurant just down the street and around the corner. I zipped in before my husband had a chance to protest my choice. We walked in to a completely empty, darkened establishment featuring a huge trompe l’oeil painting on one wall (I’m a sucker for that sort of ambiance) and wonderful Middle Eastern music playing in the background. Our hostess seemed surprised to see patrons arrive and immediately seated us near the window where we could watch passersby. We were served sweet tea and a Moroccan lager beer for my husband. Our meal was a sampler plate featuring stuffed grape leaves, kaftan, and a wonderfully smooth hummus with the largest pita I’ve ever seen. We noshed away as we watched folks leaving the market stop at the door to read the posted menu and then wander off to find other fare, possibly at the Bistro around the corner. Well, some people just don’t know what they’re missing. That’s all I can say. We loved the Tangiers. It may be years before we visit Portland again, if ever. We’re getting older and we still haven’t worked up nerve to tackle Portland’s metro system. We think we may leave the city to the younger more savvy set who are used to grabbing busses and trains to get from here to there. We did luck out with parking however, even though we were warned it would cost us dearly. It didn’t, and it was well worth the freedom to zig-zag around the city we love. Back to the country life. And thanks Portlanders for being so gracious and friendly once again.

Best spinach pie ever

By Laurie B |

Small family owned and operated restaurant. Friendly owners. Flavorful and tender lamb Schwarma. Vegetarian Mezze platter is wonderful and plentiful. Fantastic spinach pie - in a lift dough as opposed to filo. Entrees are under $15. Baklava is homemade and not too sweet.
