Traveling through & pizza for the road

By jsknight20 |

Craving pizza while on the road, quick stop here and you can order ahead by phone. Ordered from the street window a supreme and we really liked the toppings and the stingy cheese. Perfection.

Two hour lunch

By MeetingsToGo |

Service is so slow. But when you have one person as the wait staff. One person in the back. No cashier. Saw one guy leave to deliver an order. You would think. If you can't handle the in house guest. Why would you do delivery. Saw several people just waiting for service and to check out. More likely well not return. Do not have time for a two hour lunch.

Nice Place to Visit

By Henry G |

I had a Cobb salad with Grape Kool-Aid, yep you read it right Kool-Aid. Mari the wait staff recommended it to me. The Salad was very good and I'm now planning on going back to get Pizza next week or a Calzoni. I would eat here again and not worry about the place.

Delivery was quick and fresh

Tank's is fresh and homemade! Their delivery was quick and hot! We ordered a meat pizza, pepperoni and sausage pizza, and baked chicken alfredo. I would recommend any of them before eating a chain store pizza.

Real Italian Pizza

Finally, it took a while to find the best pizza in San Antonio, and this is it. They have a lunch buffet which included pasta and assorted pizza's. All was awesome.

Best Calzones in San Antonio

By Trent L |

Calzones are amazing. Pizza is great too. Highly recommend to anyone who likes this type of cuisine.

Must Have Been There On A Bad Night

By SADiner |

From past reviews in CitySearch, I can't believe we ate at the same restaurant. Our group of 8 showed up around 8pm. The place was d-e-a-d. Just another table of 6 that was leaving. The service was, at best, inept and confused. Getting a glass of wine (horrible by the glass selections) was a chore and I had to get up and tell the waiter twice that two of the eight salads at our table were missing. The house dressing was great. Too bad it was thrown on top of sparce bagged lettuce. Salmon to die for? Not even on the menu. Romantic ambiance? Sure, if you like lighting bright enough to light up a football stadium. Music? Don't expect much other than the radio being turned up when you sit down. I had Eggplant Rolatini, which was OK if you could stand the musty odor from the marinara sauce. The accompanying pasta was old and dried out. After dinner we were still the only ones in the restaurant, but we still had to get up and go to the cashier to get our check. This place is awful. Want really GOOD Italian in San Antonio? try Ciao Lavanderia or Massimo. We definitely won't be back here.

Do not get the McNight calzone!

By maridelove |

As I am usually quite pleased with this place today I had a very disappointing experience that will probably prevent me from going back. I can say this...they opened early for us after we showed up unknowingly 20 mins early so that was nice. After that, we were done... it was so hot inside that we decided to take it home. I understand they'd been warming up the oven but come on. We ordered the McNight and when we got it, it was literally the same size as the regular calzone! The regular is $8, the "larger" McNight is supposed to feed 2-3 people and is $14 and was the same size! I'm serious! Any pictures posted of their calzones...that's was the size and it was even flatter than that. I also know because it's ALL I ever order. When I went to pay and told the girl all she did was give me a blank stare of indifference and repeated "well, it IS the McNight" and she asked if I wanted to talk to the owner. At first I said no but when we left I decided it needed to be said and asked to talk to him. Nice as he is he tried to show me the two pans they make the two in and said he could take a few bucks off but seriously? No paid for and done. I even told him I could've ordered 2 regular size for the same price as one! To add insult to injury when we got home and ate it (as if it was one large slice of pizza) we'd ordered bacon, pepperoni, red onions, black olives and mushrooms. We found one piece of bacon in it! Maybe I shouldn't have shown up early. We could've ordered the buy one get one free pizzas from a local pizza joint down the street and paid the same price AND had left overs!!

First GrubHub Order

By SKB627 |

Here for a business trip and was planning on walking to the Alamo, but it was super rainy... so a night in at the hotel was in order. Had pizza on the brain and wanted to order online, so I used GrubHub for the first time and Tank's had the highest rating and reasonable prices. $10 minimum for delivery, so I got a small pizza, mozz sticks, and a soda. Driver arrived earlier than estimated time, so that was a plus! Both the pizza and mozz sticks were great. Would recommend!

Don't let the location fool you...this is the spot

By Erik B |

First off, any owner who would go out of their way to make you feel welcome and thank you for coming to their business is someone I would want to support. Tank shook my hand, chatted for a few, and took our order because the wait staff were so busy. The food came out quick and it was delicious. The crust was flavorful in both the pizza and the calzones. The garlic butter flavor was wonderful! But the real gem was that Tankzone calzone. It says feeds 2-3. It should read 4. Each slice of the 'zone was as filling as 2-3 slices of pizza, and it was loaded down with toppings. I really hope we come back to SA, because I want to visit again. Someone said this place is a vibe, and I agree!

A Great Time

By barrett68 |

The first thing you need to know is Tank's is a BYOB restaurant. This threw me for a loop initially and then I embraced it. The calazone was top-notch and the service was great.

Even Cooler with No AC

By 4ElevenTechs |

I walked into a hot mess. The AC was out but low and behold the place was packed. The blazing heat could not overpower the awesome in house made pizza and customer oriented staff. One bite and you will be hooked on the best pizza and cool aid this side of Fort Sam. Oh snap thats right, I said cool aid. Enjoy and have fun

I can't believe this place still stays in business

By Hadleydr |

As noted by the previous reviewer the place is dead. No customers and only empty tables. Food is not fresh, and the whole vibe of the place is really dreadful. Look for some other place to eat, this joint is not worth your time.

Best calzone's ever!

By localfoodie210 |

Read about this place in the news paper and they were right! The calzones are amazing!!! The service was just fine, not sure why the bad reviews. I love the building as well, must be old historic district renovated. Can't wait to go back!

Great Pizza! Friendly Staff! A "Must Visit" Pizza Dive in San Antonio

By runge_sean |

I was a bit nervous as I walked in to the restaurant. It was almost empty at the time so I was not sure what to do or how to order. Quickly a waitress noticed my distress and sat me at a table. She helped me through the ordering process and was overall a great server. (Cute too!) Food: Salad was a bit plain. It was a standard mixed salad but tasted good anyway. The pizza! This was why I came. It surprised me. You can genuineley taste the pride put into this pizza. They present it as "almost finished" and when you order, they throw it in the oven to finish it off. My only negative comment is that the sodas are in cans only. Therefore no free refills. But if free refills is the only negative thing I can find then I'd say they are doing pretty good.

Just like HOME!

By Magdalena N |

Tanks is one of those gems that become your favorite quickly. If you love East Coast pizza and grinders this is the place to go. Owners and staff treat you like family. Bring your pooch, have a brew and some fab pizza- service is as good as the food.

Good, reasonably priced pizza

By Kathleen W |

Good food. Reasonably priced. Nice indoor seating area. Friendly. Parking is difficult right now because of traffic. Not the best part of town.

Better Than an M1-A1

By OmniEpicurean |

The East side continues to get gussied up with new construction and new restaurants popping up next to the old ones. Tank's, formerly located on New Braunfels St. near Ft. Sam on the north side of IH35 is now closer to downtown. You can't miss the bright, fire engine red building as you head north on N. New Braunfels from Houston street. The interior of the place is just as shocking in its drabness as it is eye popping with its red lollipop exterior. The inside battle ship color appears as a spic and span military operation of some gray lady origin and definitive naval carrier pedigree. It feels like the war room of "In Harm's Way" must have, but John Wayne is nowhere to be found. Instead, the manager is himself a larger than life presence with a jolly personality, lots to say, and ready with a story and a laugh at the drop of a pepperoni slice. Ice cold Stella Artois that came with a free glass. This manager admittedly likes his beer very cold and that's how he keeps it, so I ended up having two. Finger sized mo-sticks and a hearty, good tasting marinara kept us well satisfied while we waited for our all-the-meats pizza. Not as thin as NY style, the dough has to be a little thicker in order to prevent it from burning through in the fiery brick oven used there. What it might lack for those who must have it thin is made up for by a very thin, crisp, bottom layer formed quickly enough that the inside of the crust stays ever so light and moist, definitely not chewy. I found myself dipping the crust left overs in what remained of the marinara sauce. Pieces that I would normally leave as discarded remnants of bite marked crust ends. Meats, cheese and sauce played just the right symphony of tastes for a pizza pie crescendo with a rousing score of flavor that we had scarcely anticipated. This was good pie! 8 stories and 5 work experiences later, the manager wrapped up my Stella glasses to go while also cajoling us to try some zeppoles. Don't feel bad as I did not know what they were either. Given the military gray decor, I was in that instant thinking of some Italian influenced observation dirigible. Not exactly. Sopapilla reminiscent, they are little "pillows" made from pizza dough that are fried and sweetened with powdered sugar. We took an order home for later. Could have used a bit more sugar, but the little dirigibles were a proper end to a Tank's meal. They also have a buffet during the week day that I would love to mangia!

Ask for Sauce

By Jon E |

Went here with the family to test out a new pizza joint. Takeaways: the customer service was good, the bathroom was clean, the food was reasonably priced and pretty good. Suggestions: order the wings, they are delicious ( we got bbq). If you order pizza ask them to either put extra sauce on it or bring you some to dip yours in. The crust, sausage, and cheese were excellent, but ours had barely any sauce. Overall I would rate this place about 3.8/5. I would definitely go back for the wings and next time I've been informed to try the calzone.

Great Pizza Spot

By SFGDude |

Tank's Pizza is located in the once highly traveled are in front of Fort Sam Houston's entrance. Since 911 and secured base policies the area has slowed down. But this is not far from the grow Pearl area. The pizza is fabulous and the calzones are great. Everything tastes fresh and handmade. Classic rock plays through the store. There is plenty of outside seating (as well as inside) with parking around the back. A must if you are in the area.

pizza was soooo good

service and atmosphere was great will return next time in town try the pizza bread

DON'T EAT HERE!

By DownTownDannyBrown |

Our first & only visit to Tanks Pizza was a BIG let down. The pizza was mediocre, stale, burned & chintzy. Tanks overcharged us for an inferior meal & they charged us for beer that we DID NOT drink. I submit as an alternative Peter Piper's. 2 weeks ago, I had lunch at the Peter Pipers (Commerce & Gen. McMullen). The pizza buffet included 6 pieces of fresh hot pizza, a full salad, bread & pastry sticks & 2 refills of Coca Cola. The pizza was hot & thick, stacked with pepperoni, ground beef, pork chunks, mushrooms & various cheeses. The salad bar was well stocked with olives, croutons, cheeses, celery, bacon bits, fresh lettuce, three kinds of dressing & generous offerings of garlic bread & pastry sticks. They also serve a spiced up spaghetti dipping sauce. Total bill (no tip included) was $7.98. Tanks charges twice as much for ½ as much CRUMMY pizza. Tanks needs to understand that you can't charge the difference unless the customer can TASTE the difference.

Grub Hub Winner

By Clay E |

After a long day of walking in San Antonio, I just wanted something brought to my hotel. I picked Tank's based on the Grub Hub app. The food was great. I will certainly eat there again

Excellent Food

By foodie1995 |

I’ve visited several times to try different menu items. I can honestly say everything I’ve eaten was excellent. The pizza dough & sauce is great. The calzone is a favorite as is everything I've tried so far!

Good Pizza, Great atmosphere

Was on my way back to the hotel and saw this pizza place. I ordered all the meats. The pizza was good, it was a little smaller than I expected.

Wonderful New Pizzeria

By Jesse D |

My family and I tried Tank's today after doing some Christmas shopping and I was very pleased. Being in the military I have traveled all over and very seldom do I feel the need to write a review for a restaurant. But I felt after visiting Tank's the need to make sure everybody knows how wonderful this place is. The pepperoni brick oven pizza is amazing and we also tried the wings which were very tasty and spicy. I highly recommend going out to Tank's. Oh and the best part, it's BYOB.

Calzone and Homemade Meatballs

By DBeachgirl12 |

I had sausage calzone that was fantastic! The dough was just perfect! Great marinera sauce to dip it in as well. Side salad was a generous portion. Husband ordered spaghetti and meatballs. Meatballs were outstanding! On the way home my husband and I were already agreeing that we would be back. Waitress was attentive and friendly on our visit tonight. Only one minor suggestion would be to ditch the canned cokes and invest in fountain drinks.......excellent dinner !

Amazing cuisine

By Culture31926 |

This is a hidden jem in the San Antonio area located on North New Brunfels Ave near Fort Sam Houston. You first notice the amazing atmosphere when you enter the restaurant and the friendly service and attention. The menu has several interesting and delicious Italian and Mexican courses. The Italain specials are amazing and prepared by a world class chef. The owners are friendly and courteous and enjoy talking to new and old customers alike. Its a very cozy atmosphere and the food is just amazing. A must see while in the San Antonio area.

Great Buffet

This place is in walking distance from work (2 blocks), which was great exercise! Pizza buffet had four pies plus pasta. Drink, salad and buffet under $10. Good food!
