We love this little place. We were skeptical about Danish food but wanted to try it since we are right around the corner and we like to try different stuff. They didn’t disappoint the food is delicious and very fresh and the couple that own it are so cute and nice it is hard to not want to support their American dream! We love the Sailor Beef Stew and the Danish meatballs but everything is delicious and the little appetizer plate the wife brings out to sample is amazing! Goat cheese, pickled cabbage and some sort of like egg salad with this delicious super healthy no sugar rye bread i think. Awesome way to start! Really good bottled beer popular in Denmark and good cheap wine options. The food is priced reasonably for what you get which are good portions but not overboard like Hash House. They are only open for lunch now but hopefully with word of mouth this place will keep growing because it gets busier and busier every time we walk by. We love to eat and drink like a Dane!!

First time having Danish food and thought it was terrific. Restaurant located in Hillcrest but was able to grab great parking spot. Had the famous Danish hot dog and loved it. Server was really good. She was friendly and had enjoyable conversation highly recommended.

Good service and delicious food. Their home made rye bread is super delicious, no preservatives. Owners, a Danish couple are warm and friendly.

We have visited several times now. One reason is they sell loaves of Danish black bread which we love. The menu is classic Danish dishes, done well. ( quality not over cooked). The room is very basic. There is a small patio on the front which means good urban people watching. Prices are reasonable. The owners are the staff and are very friendly. Nice beer and wine selection. We will go back.

I love this place. I’ve been coming for a year or more and am always glad I did. The couple who own the restaurant are Danes and they’ve recreated the food of a typical Danish restaurant. The menu is relatively small and they’re only open for lunch, but everything is just super. Their smoebrod (open faced sandwiches) are served on amazing dark rye bread. About as different from Jewish rye as you can get, but wonderful. The typically have 3-5 different kinds of sandwiches. I can vouch for the fried fish, meatball, hot smoked salmon and pickled herring: all terrific My favorite thing is the Grill Bar Burger. I wrongly assumed it was a hamburger. It’s roast park on a bun, served with pork. Cracking, pickles, cabbage and house-made remoulade. The plate is scattered with crispy fried onion pieces. I always make a mess, but the food is such a wonderful medley of textures and flavors- sweet, sour, savory, soft and crispy. Yum! I’ve had some of their larger main courses too, and I’ve never had a bad meal. A total hidden gem that I drove by for at least a year before I finally visited.

As a fan of Denmark and Danish food, I was thrilled to find a Danish restaurant on our recent trip to San Diego. The husband and wife team made for a fine experience. The food was quite good as was the brief dip back into Danish culture. Give this place a try and experience "hygge". Skol!

Yum! What.a treat to find this establishment while on our Seven Bridge Walk! We had the danish, cod sliders, and a delish glass of Swedish white wine. Definitely will return

Wonderful meal. Husband and I enjoyed everything! I had chicken pie and it was yummy. Their rye bread was divine and of course had a “Danish” My husband enjoyed a sausage and Danish!! The service was warm and friendly,

Wondered about the restaurant as we drove past many times - found parking right in front recently so decided to try it. We were very impressed with our food - not only the tasting platter with their home-made rye bread brought us by the owner, but followed by our two dishes. The chicken tartlets were excellent - tasty filling in a flaky crust. The meatballs put Ikea's to shame, and accompanied by a delicious potato salad. The dessert selection was tempting but we decided to leave that for a return visit.

On a warm day we were pleasantly surprised to see the restaurant sign in bulk letters stating mimosas for $3 and let me just quickly add, they are generous with the champagne - like if you were home with friends. We took a seat outside on the small patio. We were greeted immediately. Not more then a couple of minute went by after we ordered and we were treated with a most wonderful appetizer, Some small bites of hearty ryebread and some dipping, spread and a pickled salad. My wife ordered the hot smoked salmon and I had the daily special, both were highly enjoyable. The restaurant is small and very cozy.

We sat on the patio with well kept flowers and good shade on a hot day, blown away by the authenticity of the dishes. The bread had a lovely nutty flavor and the red cabbage salad super flavorful. The smoked salmon “Benedict” as amazing as it sounds, served with a rich butter/ lemon sauce with a hint of chili. The pancake ball quartet was well made and the perfect end. Service perfect as well. Nothing like this in San Diego, hope it stays open forever.

What a treat to be reminded of the great food we enjoyed in Copenhagen! This nice young couple has only been in the US for a year, recently opening a simple and charming lunch spot in Hillcrest. We had smorrebrod openfaced sandwiches of gravlax and herring. But even with a relatvely small (and excellent) order, our hostess, Trina, brought us an appetizer of picked red cabbage, goat cheese, a tangy remoulade sauce and some of their absolutely delicious homemade bread for dipping. All twice as good washed down with a cold Danske beer. They even serve on authentic Bing & Groendal blue collector plates, a great touch. Trina said they hope to open for supper soon.

The food is soo well made and tasty, the quality is amazing and there was plenty of it. Worth every cent. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with visible wood beams holding the ceiling and art on walls. The service is knowledgeable, attentive and personal. Absolutely impeccable. If you are planning a trip to San Diego, come here book a table - it’s amazing!

Never had danish food before but decided to give it a try after my MD appt. Waitress was super nice, friendly and informative. Started us with a complimentary tray pf danish "Banchan" some red cabbage, burrato like cheese and a mustard/egg remoulade with dark rye bread. Freash and tasty sujmmer appetizers. WIfe gothte chicken pastry puffs and i got a trio fo open face sandwhiches. My trio of sandwhihces was waaay more than i could eat at once and i acan eat. THe meatball/potato sandchich was my favorite. It sounds simple, but the chef clearly had some training and served an elegant plate. My wife's chicken pastry dish however was the star of the meal, it was delicious! Subtle flavors and interesting ingredients. Again, the chef was showing off his skills. Highly recommended! We ordered the pancake desert with berries at her recommendation, it was a surprise. Berries really fresh and it was more like a crispy wafer which also had a tender eggy side than a pancake. The chocolate on it really took it to another level.

Been a while since I was here myself, live in Texas but have family in San Diego and they come here often. It’s a hidden gem! I loved the lunch here and loved how the owners cared for us! Food is amazing yet very affordable, as I remember they have 4 or 5 choices of toppings for the delicious sandwiches. Two ryebread sandwiches goes along way, two people could easily share 3 and you will both be satisfied. My first review ever!! That is how much I loved it.

What a delight. Homemade rye bread was awesome. If she has enough you can buy a loaf for $11.50. Had the open face sandwiches. One was enough, they are big. The soup was yummy, too. I will be back and will call ahead to order a lof of bread.

Taste of Denmark In town for a convention and had a little spare time on my hands so went out and explored the city. Around lunch time We ended up outside of Taste of Denmark. We both had our first Danish open-faced sandwich here as well as chicken tartlet, it’s a puff pastry with so insanely light texture on the outside so creamy and filling mass while digging in. We opted for the three sandwich combo, and we were stuffed because the bread is so filling. The meatball very flavorful and so juicy. The eggs were perfect, and the salmon. I nearly cried with joy. The Danish pastry was delicious, the vanilla custard with almond flakes was my favorite for sure. Everything presented beautifully. This place lives up to its reviews so you definitely won't go wrong! a great place to check out if you're in the neighborhood. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a delicious homemade juice made just for you on the spot. Yes they actually do that.

We wanted to try something new for the weekend Lunch. Excellent food combinations from a starter plate to dessert, excellent service. bit noisy from next door. Still highly recommend.

A new place in Hillcrest on University Ave next to Mo's is worth a visit. Currently only open for lunch, I ordered three smorgesbord sandwiches. Meatballs, salmon and egg/veggies on open face rye bread with cheese. They also gave me a sampler app plate with a rye bread, light cheese, pickled veggie and dip. Danish food does not get the recognition like French and Italian cuisines, but it is tasty, fresh and not too heavy. They also have fresh juices, booze and full course meals.

Delicious! So impressed with the service and recommendations on the food. We will come back for sure!

My aunt lives in the area and suggested we should eat here to explore something new. The service was wonderful, patiently explained the menu and answered all our questions. (We could tell she really enjoyed interacting with us) After ordering she brought out a sample of the most amazing rye bread, pickled red cabbage and some sauce to spread on the bread. Wonderful start of the meal. We decided on the meatballs and a Danish pot pie for main course. Everything seasoned to perfection and so fresh. I don’t get to see my aunt very often but when I do now I know where we will eat. I advise to book a table it’s a small restaurant and while we were there it suddenly got very crowded very fast.
Excellent Danish food
Great new restaurant in Hillcrest. The food is authentic and of very high quality. It is family owned and run by a couple that recently moved here from Denmark. We loved everything we tried so I highly recommend this tasty place.
