Good Food, Great View!

By Lora T |

On a recent stop in La Jolla my husband and I found ourselves wandering up the street from La Jolla cove in search of some nourishment . We found about 4 or 5 restaurants next to each other so we looked at menus and decided to try Taste of the Himalayas. Having never eaten any type of Indian food, we were pleasantly surprised that we liked it! The service was slow but we had an outside table where we could take full advantage of the ocean view and were sipping our afternoon libations, so all was good! The lentil soup was delicious as was the nan. We had a couple other chicken dishes, chicken tika masala being one of them, and a curry veggie dish. All wonderful! The portions were generous and I had a nice lunch again the next day. We will return!

Not Good

By Mohammad Aljallaf |

Did not like the food ... The house is hot and full of cooking smoke cause no proper air circulation ... Will not come back again for sure

Great food, service a bit slow

By Liz |

We stopped here for lunch after a long walk on a warm sunny day. The food was tasty and the portions quite large. They made some sort of mistake with our order though, which meant that one meal arrived a lot later than the other. But all in all a good place to eat.

Amazing Food BUT....

By KatherineNoel |

....I really hate to say this because I never believe reviews when I read this but I have to because it's absolutely 100% true. All 6 of us saw (GASP) cockroaches. I've only seen them a couple times before in Mexico so I had to google a picture while we were sitting there and yes, we saw at least 6 cockroaches in the main restaurant part (and I saw 1 in the bathroom). So as we're sitting there contemplating ordering, I check the reviews on this place and they are fabulous. No one mentioned bugs or cockroaches. So we're all like-do we leave, do we say something? They were on the opposite wall as we were crawling behind 2 beautiful wall hangings. Multiple cockroaches. We order anyway-even though a person in our party is freaking out about the bugs carrying horrible diseases. THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS. Of course the entire time we are eating we're all saying out loud-gosh I hope there aren't cockroaches in our food. So I'm super confused. If there are cockroaches, why are there such good reviews? Is it because everyone is willing to overlook this because the food is so great and the prices are super reasonable? Are standards in California different than in other states so cockroaches aren't a reason to shut down a restaurant? Are we the only ones to have ever seen cockroaches there? Was this a fluke because they had all their doors open? I don't know if I'd chance it again there so look around before you order.

Very good food and location poor decor

By stentdoc |

My son loved the butter chicken the chili paneer was average. The service was good. Surprised that in La Jolla the decor was so average

Yum Yum Curry

By Footprints474561 |

I get curry from there every time and it’s delicious also it has a great service and it’s not too spicy if you get level one and boy I love the curry and nan so much I sometimes sneak spoonfuls from it from my parents

Great lunch dining

By cabesq |

They have really tasty and flavorful, traditional Indian cuisine and affordable lunch specials. It is small, but nicely decorated and with a small outdoor dining area so you can sit outside and enjoy the LaJolla weather. Pleasant staff.

Authentic Cuisine

By 619Jayvee |

I love that you get the taste of authentic food while you hear the sound of the water in the background since the beach nearby.

Tasty eats!

By Margot C |

Lots of lamb dishes and also good salads. We enjoyed the location, service and our dinner. A good choice overall!

Lunch

By WhereNext |

Oh man, this was disappointing. We imagined this restaurant being at such a good location the food would be atleast average. Not really. We ordered momo's(nepalese dumplings) and that was pretty bad. The indian dishes for entree(chicken & something vegatarian) were rich but not tasty.

Cute restaurant near our hotel

By lkelmom |

Yummy food! Waiter was very helpful in assisting my choice of a lamb dish. It was really wonderful. Offered to bring more rice if I wanted it. Nice to sit outside and eat.

Tasty Indian food!

By JacarandaSpirit |

This is a great little place in downtown La Jolla. We are wusses when it comes to hot food and the thing I enjoyed most about this restaurant was that when we asked for 'mild' we actually got it! I could taste the spices and essence of the curry sauce without burning my mouth - it was an enjoyable dinner. We had a veggie dish that was just o.k. but Chicken tikka masala was outstanding.

Best Indian cuisine in San Diego

By FCM |

THE GOOD: I love this place; their food is outstanding, great portions, good price. Shrimp chilly and chicken Makhani are a MUST, service is always very good. THE BAD: Their La Jolla location is HORRIBLE, its old, its ugly, the bathroom is disgusting, their tables and chairs are from 30 years ago, in need of a major remodel SAID THIS, their food is so GOOD that I can deal with their old rest and decor for a couple of hrs with no problem.

Not for me

By EOarizona |

The food seemed like the quality and freshness was lacking. Also the wait staff was not efficient when taking my order. No choices were offered even though clearly stated in the menu. The floor by the front door was caked with black yuck that looked like dirt and grease.

Excellent!

By Seeprats |

As a huge fan of their Midway location, we chose to try out the La Jolla one as its closer to us. We tried the Tandoori Chicken as an appetizer (great portion size to split for a party of 4). The dish was delicious - chicken very well marinated, spot on with the tandoor (clay-oven) cooked flavor and the best part- NO red food color which seems to be the norm for tandoori chicken at all Indian restaurants in the USA! It was served on a sizzler plate atop a bed of lightly grilled veggies. We then had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lukshya Ko Masu ( lamb cooked in Nepalese spices) both were so rich, different and yet bursting with flavor ! We were also served rice along with the chicken and lamb entrees above but ordered 2 sides each of the Badami Naan ( naan stuffed with cherries, fennel, cashews and almonds) and the Garlic Herbal Naan. Both varieties of naan were excellent! We were also served a complimentary bowl of daal right while we waited for our order. We arrived at the restaurant at 6.30 pm on a Sunday and were immediately seated. The service did tend to slow down as the evening progressed and the place got busier but since its a relatively new restaurant, I'm sure they'll work out the flow in a while. Being Indian myself, I would say that this is hands down the best restaurant to get great Indian ( and even Nepalese!) food in San Diego. Period.

Delicious food and soothing ambience

By Sandeep J |

Visited post spending couple of hours at La Jolla Cove. The place is beautiful. Well maintained. Staff is very courteous. Food was very well prepared and delicious. Enjoyed a lot.

Long wait but good food

By mgeorge987 |

Food: We ordered the Chicken Masala, Chicken Korma, Malai Kofta, and plain naan. The food was very good. Portion sizes are generous. The chicken in the dishes were a little dry. The sauces were delicious. They went well with the basmati rice and naan. Service: It took almost an hour for us to get our food. Our server apologized a few times for our order taking so long and gave us some complimentary lentil soup which nice. The soup was good. Other: Their location in downtown La Jolla is great. You can see La Jolla Cove from the restaurant. It makes for a great walk after dinner. However, parking can be quite challenging depending on when you go. We went on a beautiful Saturday night in July so we parked far. But we didn't mind the walk around Downtown La Jolla. Prices are good for being in La Jolla.

Hot and Spicy Pakoras But Okay Chai

By Madhu J |

We wanted to kill sometime when a couple of our friends were shopping. We decided to get some snacks and tea while waiting. The pakoras were super tasty. The tea however was too sweet and just okay.

Excellent Food but Mediocre Customer Service

By Out S |

We came to this restaurant after a leisure walk at La Jolla Cove. We ordered Chara ko Masu which is boneless chicken cooked in onion and tomato gravy with Himalayan spices with roti. This dish was amazing and nothing like any chicken dishes I have eaten in onion-tomato gravy. Very delicious and it kept me guessing on how they would have made this chicken so perfect! Since both of us were not super hungry, this portion size was just enough. Would recommend ordering 2 mains if you are starving. Customer service could have been better. We were seated pretty soon on arriving but it took a long time for the servers to get our cheque. The decor at this restaurant is different than the most Indian ones. Would definitely recommend for delicious meal.

Very tasty

By DavidMc314 |

Pretty good tikki masala. Could have used more spice. Ordered level 7 (of 10) but it was an American spicy 7.

Sunday lunch

By Lisa B |

I wasn’t sure what to expect. When we arrived I had my doubts - it looked a bit grubby and in serious need of redecoration. But the food was surprisingly good. We had chicken makhani, a mixed tandoori grill, raitha and garlic and coriander naan. I’m not sure I’ll revisit. I’m searching for the best in SDcounty, not sure I’ve found it yet. Naan was really good- lighter, thinner than normal and delicious. Too much oil floating in the bottom of the tandoori hot plate. Unassuming service, very sweet. All in all a good spot maybe I’ll be back in a few months. Don’t come here expecting to be blown away but just come expecting tasty, authentic food without any frills

Layers of Great Flavor

By David C |

We had walked by here several times, over the years, and it was always packed. But we got an outdoor table on a Friday afternoon - great service, variety and flavor. The meats were a little on the chewy side, but the Naan, Pakora, Lentil Soup, sauces - fantastic.

The flavors!!

By Lisnn |

The flavors!! Someone who cooks with spices. We are wanting to come back tomorrow! La Jolla is special but please do not miss this place. It's an aphrodisiac.

Good Indian and Nepalese food

By Sergey L |

We were there for a lunch on Sunday afternoon. The place looked busy, but we got a good table outside, with ocean view. The food arrived soon, and was tasty. Salmon tandoori was very good. Paneer chilly with Himalayan sauce I liked very much.

Great food, great location! A La Jolla must

By eburke92 |

I have eaten here many times and always had great food in a good atmosphere. Most recently, my date and I had a wonderful meal of shrimp pakora, daal soup, chana masala, and chicken korma. The shrimp pakora was lightly breaded and fried just right – a little crispy, but not at all greasy, and not too much breading; you could still taste the shrimp. It also came with a tasty dipping sauce. I had just taken a dip in the ocean and the daal soup was perfect for warming up and taking the edge off of my hunger. At spice level 1, the chicken korma was creamy, flavorful, and just a little bit sweet; the chunks of chicken were tender. The chana masala at spice level 2 was perfect for me – just a little bit of kick, but not overwhelming. It was also very filling without feeling heavy. In addition to the food, what I have always loved about this place is its location. Just up the street from La Jolla cove, it is the perfect stop after an afternoon on the beach/in the ocean. If you sit on the patio, you have a view of the ocean; time it right and you can catch a beautiful sunset. The service is excellent, yet the vibe is casual; it’s the perfect spontaneous night out. The prices are also very reasonably, especially compared to other nearby options. Highly recommended for visitors and locals alike.

Scrumptious

By Rkelly2014 |

We stopped here after a stroll on the beach and enjoyed a cocktail and appetizers.Which were delicious. So later when we were going to order from GrubHub we decided on Taste of the Himalayas.Absolutely delicious food. And piping hot from GrubHub too.

Tasty food, friendly service, good price

By stratnumberone |

Stopped in for some lunch. Ordered the lunch special, which consisted of a small bowl of lentil soup to start (very much like tarka dhal) and then a main course consisting of two curries (out of a choice of about eight), rice and naan. My wife had the coconut vegetable curry and the saag aloo. The coconut vegetable in particular was excellent. I chose the lamb special (which cost a bit extra but was worth it) and the chilli chicken. I would have liked a little more spice to it (the waiter asked how I wanted it and I requested medium. I would say that, in Brit terms, it was a mild ruby!) but the flavours were really good and the meat lean and tender. The rice and naan were also delicious and generously portioned. The food did not take too long to come out, but it took long enough for us to know it was being freshly prepared - which is how I like it. We had nice table by the window with an ocean view and a breeze to keep us cool. The lunch special was just $8.95 (mine was three bucks extra as I had lamb) and excellent value. I will go again if I am in La Jolla.

Very good ethnic food

We look for healthy, low fat, and looks good on the plate. Prices were reasonable and food very tasty.

Something new to taste

By Michael C |

My wife and I have been wanting to come here for some time, we finally made it on Easter dinner, and they did not disappoint. We started with the plane Naan Bread and Daal Soup. the Naan Bread seemed a little under cooked and had not much of a special flavor, little disappointed. The Daal soup was good, not over spicy but had a unique flavor, which was good. Then we tried the Lamb Biryani and Mixed Momo, on the recommendation of the server The Lamb Biryani was so good I wanted to order another dish. The Momo was good, it wasn't something over the top, but it was good with it's own flavor. We enjoyed dinner with two different Nepal beers, the "Real Gold" and the "Mustang" both were not hoppy. and we seemed to enjoy the "Real Gold" beer better as it seemed to have a better flavor. By the end of the evening we walked away with a unique Easter dinner that we both enjoyed. We will be back. Only reason 4 stars is we felt once dinner was served they forgot about checking up on us, and wanting more drinks

Great food.. must try

By Deepti R |

Tried the achari paneer, sag aloo, paneer tikka masala, malai kofta. All very good but the achari paneer was the best of the lot. Garlic cilantro naan was well made. The momos came out after the entrees so make sure you order them as soon as you get in, since the preparation time is more. Overall great experience, except that the service is a little slow.

Great Indian

By Kelley P |

While waiting in line for the place next door, kept smelling Indian. It was fantastic. Fast service and delicious food. Not to mention the view.

Good food at a convenient location

By Meenal9 |

This hotel was close to our La Jolla hotel and the reviews seemed decent, so we decided to try it out. The food was decent enough, portions were generous, although some of the dishes that we asked to be made spicier were still not too spicy. We only did a takeout so can't comment on service.

Authentic Indian food that is delicious!

By Funtravels13 |

My family and I really enjoyed eating at this place. First off, the fact that you can sit outdoors and see the ocean makes this place worth visiting. Secondly, the staff who are so friendly and courteous make this place worth visiting. From the moment we stepped in we were made to feel comfortable and all our questions were answered. We ordered the following dishes: malai kofta, paneer tikka masala and mixed vegetable (tarkari veggies). Also ordered plain naans and garlic naans. All of the items were delicious except for the mixed veggies. They were okay. I would highly recommend the garlic naans and the malai koftas. The portion sizes were decent. We were 4 of us who were quite hungry. 3 dishes and 4 naans filled us up with some left overs. If you are craving Indian food in San Diego this is definitely a place worth trying.

totally awesome

By ShannonHG |

I have never had this type of food, but it met our geographical destination as well as vegetarian/vegan and open for lunch. WOW! seriously awesome food! Flavorful, variety in textures, and healthy! Would go back in a minute! bummer...I live in DC! had Daal Soup , Aloo Bhanta, vegetable momo, Saag Aloo, and Papad We had one other dish, but don't remember. Waiter was good at suggestions, too! Go! you won't regret it!

Indian Delight

By Manish_Ritika |

For someone looking for a NICE not so expensive food then this is the place to be. finger licking - sumptuous food. The place is run by a Nepali Indian, its menu is quite extensive, the place is easily approachable for any one on La Jolla beach, Caution : Food is a bit spicy so order accordingly

Very good Indian food with outdoor seating

By Royce A |

We had rack of lamb Indian style and a large order of Bhindi (okra). Some of the best we have had and the pricing was very reasonable. Would definitely recommend

Indian fare at top quality

By Companion684465 |

Came back from the beach, ready for a light and filling lunch - and this restaurant was the right place. They serve special lunch menu for about $15. I ordered the korma curry with chicken, which comes with yellow dahl soup, rice and naan. Everything was delicious with capital D! Flavorful, warm, naan with a touch of garlic, the korma sauce thick, creamy and just the right spicy notes - with a few dried berries. Service was nice and prompt. Seating is a bit weird, at small plastic tables, with little ambience, but on a sunny day - OK. I will definitely go there again.

Great lunch

By Gordon M |

Incredibly tasty and affordable lunch special; served with soup, naan and a choice of 2 menu items including basmati rice. Will definitely return.

Made to Order

By OneOrchidLover |

Wonderful made to order curries. Worth the wait! I require no salt and they accommodate me every time! FRESH

Never again!

By SDAR |

Since there are no other Indian restaurants left in Jolla, my wife and I tried Taste of the Himalayas. Not a good decision. The restaurant is dark and cold. The service was good. The food ranged from bland to just not good. Never again.

The best!

By k10yoga |

Considering I just returned from India, when Indian food comes up I expect the American version. This was quite a pleasant surprise! Authentic and amazing, even down to the serving dishes! People watching on the patio rocks. Thanks for taking me back to India!

Horrible Service

By Asgoodaszagat |

The waiter seemed surprised that we had a reservation for 8pm. He didn't provide any helpful information about the menu. At one particular time, one of my friends wanted another glass of wine, he declined, because they were closing at nine. We felt rushed, even when we order food quickly. Appetizers and food, they both came at the same time. If the restaurant closes at nine, then don't accept a reservation for 8pm. It seems that this restaurant don't need clients. We were still eating when the waiter put the bill on the table! We left with a sour taste in our mouths, non impressive food and non impressive service. The waiter was not even grateful for the $$$ bill that we paid. Avoid this place. I will definitely not recommend it.

Favorite Restaurant in La Jolla

By Chris M |

I live in the La Jolla and this is my favorite restaurant. Excellent Nepalese, Indian, and Tibetan food. Beware: The food is very SPICY. Out of a scale of 1-to-10 I typically get a 6 and the food is very hot.

Great flavors, less than great atmosphere

By chipdesigner |

Go for the food, not the decor, at this small restaurant in La Jolla. The menu looks like a typical Indian restaurant, but the flavors and spices are from Nepal. Which makes for a unique and exciting flavor journey. We ordered three different dishes (lamb, chicken, and a Himalayan Biryani) and all were fantastic (and each came in a slightly different serving dish). There are a few small outside tables to get a partial ocean view. Prices are very reasonable and the service was friendly. Highly recommended!

Nice evening.

By Carol M |

The food was good and we enjoyed sitting outside. It made a change to all the burgers and sandwiches we had been having on our trip!

Made me and friends so sick!! Ruined our vacation!!

By Rusty K |

The service was ok and the food tasted Ok. But like my friends that where on vacation with my wife and I said " liquid clenze comes out of both ends" we where fighting over the toilet for two days after eating there. I'll spare u the details but it was horrible!!!

Good food and caring service

By Ingrid |

Enjoyed the spongy bread and chicken curry. The waiter was very happy to serve us. Quiet location, colorful and intimate.

Do not bypass

By Dananviv |

1st time here and I was very pleasantly surprised! I ordered #66 as it had a lot of everything in it, and I was not disappointed. Oh, and the bread amazing! And what was most surprising for a place in La Jolla, the $$ was very reasonable!

Like Indian but different!

By Rhapsodyinblue |

There are so many choices of cuisines in this area that we wanted to try something different. This is located in the corner of a strip mall with ample parking. The menu is very varied. A lot of it looks like northern Indian however there are variations. They have a nice selection of Asian beers. There is no problem getting a vegan or vegetarian meal and many of the entrées can be made vegan or vegetarian. Of the four of us two of us had a delicious curry dish with vegetables, paneer cheese, tofu, and a coconut based creamy curry. With the jasmine rice, it was delicious. Another person had tandoori shrimp, but unlike other Indian tandoori that we have had they were not red and not obviously from the tandoori oven. Fourth person also a vegan had tofu and spinach. The entrées are generally in the $15-$20 range. The dumplings were on the menu as “momo” (Nepalese dumplings) but not sure if they were as momo are usually spherical and these looked more like gyoza. They were delicious however. Dinner for four, 1 appetizer with tip $117. Would definitely return.

A mouthful of flavour

By jamesjfa |

We stopped here during our San Diego trip and found the food to be cooked with the spice level we asked for and to absolute perfection. My wife said to me after her 1st mouthful that should we ever return to San Diego, then we have to come back here. That says it all.

Good choice in La Jolla

By TouristFromLA |

Visited Taste of the Himalayas on a Saturday night, Nepalese popular joint with a line of customers waiting to be seated which took about 20 minutes ..food was good...but no different from other similar, decent Indian restaurants....naan bread was very tasty...nice, friendly, colorful ambiance inside...good alternate for something different in La Jolla. excellent location close to the cove..I would rate it as 3.5 based on quality and taste of food...

Great food

By Bubbly B |

Last night, as we strolled through La Jolla to watch the sunset, we stumbled upon this restaurant. It is very small and they accommodate you by waiting until other patrons leave then unlock the door and let you in. I was not at all impressed with the ladies bathroom. Yes, the toilet flushed. There was running water to wash your hands. There were no paper towel. Being a nurse, I pratice washing hands then using a paper towel to open the door. That was a disaster. There were no paper towel to use to open the door and the door was one with a push button to lock and a handle to push down to let yourself out. Too much contact with the door handle that only God knows what could have been on it. Their mango lassi was superb. I have had it at many places. This one was by far my favorite. Our son had a lamb dish and my husband had a chicken dish. They both said it was very good. I had their Saag Aloo. It was also very good. The entrees come with basanti rice or naan. We got the rice but ordered a side of garlic naan. All in all, I would eat here again. Next time I will carry my own paper towels to ensure my needs for hand sanitation are met. :)

Great Patio and Food

By Spolar999 |

Oh my gosh! A seat on the patio, a ice cold India beer and the best India food! We had the Chicken Tika Masala and the Chicken Tandoori with Naan! Just fabulous. Great view of the water, great service. Food is fresh and delicious. Patio is small but each table is placed for a great view and ocean breeze. Couldn't be any better!

Wonderful!

By madmatg |

We got curry, marsala, biryani, dumplings, naan, samosa. It was all very delicious. Will come back if we return to La Jolla! Service was good also!

great tandori

By Eric C |

Had the mixed tandori for lunch, very good dish! the lamb was tasty and soft. shrimp was good and the chicken was juicy! great Himalayan flavor not overly "spiced."

Horrible service

By pqr353 |

Terrible service...from a grumpy n lousy manager/owner ???..especially towards SEAsians customers. Food is not great AT ALL....they dont let you order ONLY appetizers as they make the most money from meals. If you do order appetizers ONLY...then you have to pick up and leave, cant sit at the tables...even if the whole restaurant is mostly empty. Actually desrvers ZERO stars

Terrific food, service

By galdaldoc |

Delicious Indian food- crispy, herbed naan; steamed veggie dumplings; veggie soup- piping hot. Main dish of vegetable curry with delicate sauce. Attentive friendly service. Would definitely return

Great flavors, not your typical indian food

By s G |

Some of the most flavorful and tasty asian food I have had. They put their own twist on the spices which changes things up a bit. From the biryani, to the okra, to the butter chicken. We were very impressed at the quality.

Great Lunch Selection-Exceptional Flavor

By OliviaATL |

This was my first experience with Indian food, but it won't be my last. The flavor was absolutely amazing. I had a combination of Curried Chicken and Chicken Tikki Marsala----I'm not sure which was more flavorful. I went at lunch and they had a great variety of lunch specials all reasonably priced. I highly recommend for anyone who likes slightly spicy, but highly flavorful food.

Excellent place !!

By Byomkesh B |

Lamb momos and Shrimp curry are delicious and a must try if you are in the area. Great service and they can customize spice levels to your liking.

Good Experience

By Emma B |

This was one of our first times eating Indian food and we loved it! Everything tasted really good. Service was good and fast. Nice outdoor seating.

Nice, but expected more

By Shree K |

Very close to La Jolla Cove. Went late so was not able to enjoy the views, but it is not overlooking the cove (on a side street). Service is excellent. The momos (dumplings) are fantastic. I love Nepalese food, but was a little disappointed that it was neither truly Nepalese nor truly desi (Indian)

Order what you want, you get what they feel like sending to you, then argue about it!

By brigid h |

Service horrible. Called manager to explain what I ordered was not what I received and he argued with me. I said why didn't you call me to tell me you couldn't accommodate me? "We don't do that". What a liar. What a cheap, small minded, tyrant. NEVER AGAIN NEVER EVER AGAIN. Yuck.

Best Indian Sauces Ever

By Evelina62 |

We stopped at this very informal eatery in La Jolla, after bypassing multitude of expensive options - due to how informally we were dressed (after a jog). We were drawn in by a board advertising Lunch Special at $9.95 which included soup, bastmati rice, naan, and choice of two entrees! Hard to believe this was a genuine offer, but we walked onto the outside terrace, and got seated. Our order was taken, and indeed, the offer was real. The lentil soup was delicious (partly pureed). I have been a fan of Indian/Himalayan cuisine for the past thirty years. In all these years I have never tasted rich, creamy, and tasty sauces such as I encountered in their chicken tikka masala and the vegetable coconut curry. We will definitely return to La Jolla and to this restaurant for their food. Bravo!

Interesting place

By Shruti t |

Food was yummy, service is ok but prices are way more than we expected. We thought it might be the La Jolla affect.

visited twice

By patricia s |

Went twice in one week food really tasty and service friendly.Very well priced and value for money.always busy a good sign

Great authentic taste

By TapanBorah |

Pros: Great ambiance, varieties of items on menu, nice view of seashore Specially liked the lentil soup and the hot tandoori roti's. Savored the authentic taste of Indian/Himalayan foot hill cuisines, Cons: Slow service Had to wait for 15-20 minutes for the soup. Felt under-staffed.

It's a win, win combination

By InquisitiveTessa |

This was our first time trying Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine and we liked it. Our table ordered a variety of dishes…so we had some traditional Nepali, Tibetan & Indian dishes. I know I'm not a fan of Indian food and was curious to see the difference in these cuisines. They started us all with a lentil soup, which was very good. In fact, I'd go back there just for the soup. I'm limited in that I'm allergic to tomatoes. All of their 'sauces' had tomato in them. So, on recommendation and knowing I wanted to try Nepali food, I ordered the Rack of Lamb. This came sizzling on cast iron with vegetables and 5 ribs of the rack. Very nice portion and very tasty. All entrées come with choice of basmati rice or naan. In case you've never had naan, it looks similar to pita bread, but it's much lighter and tastier in my opinion. We had a 2 year old with us and ordered the Chicken Momo (dumplings) for him. It was a large portion and we all tried it and all enjoyed it. It doesn't come with a dipping sauce and you don't need it because it's flavorful all on it's own. For the others in the party to share, we ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Palak Panner (spinach) and the Ghinge Machha (shrimp). We also ordered a side of Raita. Everyone enjoyed everything. It was all flavorful and the 'heat' level tailored to order…so mild can be accomplished along with very hot if you like it that way. The wine menu is not notable. But we ordered the Pinot Grigio and enjoyed it with our meal. We didn't try any desserts because we were quite satisfied by the end of our meal. This will definitely be a place we go back. My husband loves Indian food and me, well, not so much. Here, he can satisfy his craving for Indian food and I can find delight in Nepali food. It's a win, win.

Perfect amount of spice, delicious naan

By Ann D |

Loved having a tasty lunch outside on a beautiful day. The Chicken Vindaoo was excellent. Fun decor inside.

EXCELLENT FOOD

By Mike B |

We have visited their other restaurant several times and his was our first time at this location. Great service, great food...and a great location in La Jolla,,,walk to the cove and also walk to shops...excellent !!

Great view, reasonable lunch.

By Michelle D |

Ate here for lunch, which was inexpensive, delicious and quick. Nice view of the ocean, but not high prices. Enjoyed the Chicken Tika Masala!

Ordinary Bland food

By keepwalking w |

Ordered through Grubhub...take note this is one of many Indian cuisines places serving extremely ordinary fare. The food is barely palatable and is not designed for connoisseurs bit occasional dabblers in Indian cuisine. In short just okay. We called restaurant couple of times to confirm the order, the person promised condiments that are standard with Indian cuisine mint chutney etc but these were not provided. I will try other restaurants in the areas next time we are here.

Expensive, good food and service, but could only make very mild flavors

By Chewed P |

Service and friendliness of staff was excellent - food is very good. Why only a 3 out of 5 then? Husband asked for Sierra Nevada beer, unfortunately they didn't have in stock, so they recommended the Himalayan beer, which they said was similar (it wasn't - but at $7.95 it was a shrewd move on their part to recommend it) - then got a Stella ($6.95 - pricey if you ask me). I ordered chicken korma $15.95 , asked for it very mild (zero out of 10, as I'm a big baby when it comes to curry) and it was delicious - no complaints at all. Husband asked for chicken tikka marsala, $15.95, asked for it medium level spice (like a 5 out of 10) (i.e. a lot more spicy than mine) but it came at the same spice level as my korma - no spice at all, even I could eat it (and I can NEVER eat my husband's curry - they are always way too hot for me) - so we asked for them to add some spiciness/heat to it - it came back more or less the same - hardly any difference - I could still eat it easily. And I order all my curries at a level zero! Having said that, it doesn't mean it wasn't very good because it was. If I had ordered it for myself, I'd have been pleased. My husband had wanted a bit of spice and heat, didn't get it, but he still enjoyed it. Didn't really want to linger as it was very VERY cold inside (wish they would have closed the outside door to keep some warmth in - but I felt like it would have been rude of me to ask them) - service was excellent - just wish that they could have made my husband's a medium level curry instead of just mild (that's cost it one star) - and wish it wasn't so pricey (another star). $57 (excluding gratuity) for two chicken dishes, one order of naan, one order of popadums and two beers. Expensive! And $15 of that was beer. Food flavors very good. Doesn't come close though to the wonderful Himalayan Dine Inn restaurant in San Diego, which I just saw on yelp is closed - that place was wonderful. SO sad :-(

Best Indian-type food in La Jolla

By JonnyDub |

We often go to the location in Pt. Loma as well. The one in La Mesa is also very good. It's mostly Indian-like, but there are some Tibetan dishes as well. Good stuff!!! Great location near the Cove.

Not what I was looking for

By tyfairclough |

I was told there was an Indian in La Jolla where the owner has the Arsenal badge tattooed to his chest. This I had to see, I also knew that I was likely to get a good curry as going anywhere other than UK or India is like walking a tightrope. Turns out there are many, and I ended up in one of the other restaurants. So FYI if that's what your looking for here is not it. But you will find a half decent restaurant not far from the coast (although no coastal views). I tried the dim sum looking items on the menu while my wife went down the lamb curry route. My daughter seemed to enjoy it the most as the heat in the food was on the down low.

Very Blah - Won't Go Back

By Smartblonde |

This is a very casual place, which is fine. But I was very disappointed by the food at Taste of Himalayas. My husband is from India, and we love the Nepalese cuisine, which I usually find very flavorful without the extreme hotness of much of Indian food. I did not find that this food met our expectations. The samosas were fine. However, the lamb in one dish was very gamey, and the chicken in the other dish was extremely tough and difficult to chew. The seasoning was not what we expected, and pretty blah. We will not go back.

Great Indian Food Just Off the Beach

By MDF |

We came in on a flight from the east coast and were just looking for a convenient place where we could share a few appetizers since we were still adjusting to the time difference. Taste of the Himalayas was chosen just because it was close, but our party enjoyed the appetizers so much (Samosas, Chicken Choila, Shrip Pakora, Naan, and Daal Soup) that we were determined to come back for a full meal later in the week. We did, and we were not disappointed. All of our dishes were fantastic (Chicken Tandoori, Lukshya ko Momo, Chicken Chilly, and some other chicken and veg dishes I can't remember) and everyone loved their dinner. I do agree with a previous poster that the dishes may be spicier than in other restaurants (I was happy with a "4" when at most places I'd have a "6"). The service isn't fast, this isn't a complaint, just something to prepare for. You should expect to spend some time enjoying the food and the company of the people you are with. Taste of the Himalayas was a total surprise, but it ended up being our favorite restaurant during our week in La Jolla.

Excellent view & value

By asiacentury2000 |

The outdoor tables afford a nice and clear view of La Jolla Cove, complete with stately palm trees. The luncheon special of lentil soup, basmati rice, naan bread plus choice of TWO additional courses: chicken masala, chicken curry, coconut curry etc. was excellent - especially at $8.95!!! A real value anywhere let alone in downtown fancy La Jolla with ocean view. The wait staff was attentive and polite. The table was covered with real tablecloth in black - and the soft cloth napkin was white. The Kingfisher Indian beer went well with the food. The only slight complain is that the dishes have been 'Americanized' - not enough heat!

Good Indian Food

By John M |

Nice Indian Restaurant right round the corner from our hotel. Good tradtional Indian food. We had shrimp and chicken tika Masala. We sat on the patio for a view of the ocean.

Delicious and worth the wait

By Graham A |

It was a Monday night, just one waiter and he said the kitchen was backed up with 45 minutes to wait for our food. We weren’t in a hurry and was it worth the wait. We had shrimp masala and eggplant/potato curry - delicious. Really recommend this place.

Average food; awful service

By Ashir T |

The food was average at best. The waiter forgot my soup order completely and they did not have one of the appetizers on the menu. Ambiance was below average as well. Service was awful. Waiter never checked on us once our food was served and had to flag him down for drink refills. Restaurant was not busy at all (generally a bad sign!), there was 1 other table of 4. Waiters were standing around talking but seems like they were not interested in customers. There have to be better options for Indian type cuisine!

Lunch time

By Lubna3 |

The wait for the food was quite long. Specially since the waiter told us it would not take long. Dishes were pricey but DAAL and SAAG Aloo was delicious. Naan was not all that great but ok.

Delicious food in an intimate setting

By LJB610 |

A small restaurant in La Jolla village. There is a small patio outside with a few tables, which is ideal for those warm summer nights. Inside, the restaurant is intimate with decor resembling what might be found in a similar establishment in Nepal or other parts of the Himalayas. Goal achieved as far as the decor is concerned. The menu is good , with dishes divided into starters, soup & salads, meat, poultry, fish and vegetable dishes. All with Indian or Himalayan influence. There is a small wine list and a small selection of imported and domestic beers. Including Kingfisher beer, one of the most widely available beers in India. The service is excellent , as you would expect. The waiters helpful and attentive , happy to offer advice or suggestions if requested. The food is, naturally, prepared to order, so don't be surprised if you have to wait a few minutes for your food to arrive at the table. It is worth the wait. Food is well presented, delicious and the portions more than adequate. With so many delicious options available it is inevitable you will order too much. Goal achieved in regards to the food. The restaurant's location and small size means it is always busy. Advance booking is advised, especially if you want a table at the window or out on the patio. The prices are very reasonable for a La Jolla restaurant serving such delicious food. Highly recommended.

Delicious Food!!! (PRICES INCLUDED)

By TravelReviewer1983 |

Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and had a good experience. If it wasn't for me managing to finish my dish before my wife even got hers, this would have been 5/5! I ordered one Palak Paneer ($13.95+Tax), and my wife had one mixed Momo ($12.95+Tax). Both tasted delicious and we freshly made. Would definitely come back

Excellent

By Allan A |

Dinner. Vegetable Momo, potatoes and cauliflower, Mango Lassi, masala tea, cherry Naan, all just right. Attentive service. Reasonable prices. We will return and you should try!

Fantastic food and service.

By David H |

My friends and I spotted this little gem while driving around La Jolla looking for a fun place to eat. We each had a different entrée and all three of us were delighted. One of my friends simply asked our server for his recommendation. It was the Rack of Lamb. I had a dish with chicken, shrimp and lamb in a wonderful sauce and my other friend had a chicken dish. We all had a delicious soup as a starter, and garlic nan with the meal. The menu has something for everyone; many great choices. The server also asks what level of spiciness you want, so it's just right for you. If you like Indian food, or even if you have never tried it, this place is the best. Outdoor seating was available, and since this is right by the ocean, the temperature was just right. The service was also excellent.

Great food, good value

By 924aloha |

Tasty, great portions, very nice spice but not hot like indian food. Loved it. Not crazy expensive either!

Average

By mjcrolla |

Where we live, there are many Gurkha restaurants, which sadly, leave this one in the shade. The service was fine, although strangely, the waiter brought my main course whilst I was still eating my starter, so he was sent back with it. The meal was average, but as ever, curries in the USA are way behind those in the UK. Michael, Nottingham

Excellent Indian food, tucked away location

By Kathryn L |

Sometimes it can be a crapshoot when looking for Indian food - we lucked out with Taste of the Himalayas! The prices were decent for the location (about $15 per plate for dinner), service was personable, and the portions were just right.

Don't Eat Here

By WilliamNe |

The food wasn't bad but the service was the worst I have experienced in my entire life. It was therefor a very frustrating time.

Taste of Himalayas

By Glyn C |

Better than average cheap food Indian resturant. I had the Lamb Takari with basmati rice and Nahn bread. I asked for medium spicy and found it to be very spicy. Lamb was tender, with only one fatty piece. Also had Papad as a starter, good for 1 or 2 people, comes with a nice mint sauce. Yes would go back again when in the mood for Indian.

Good not great

By Judy B |

We had dinner here once and it was delicious so we came back. The second time around was not so good. The food was cold when we finally got it. The service was poor. We were disappointed. It is close to the Cove and has a nice view looking down towards the ocean. But you better go when it's quiet so they'll have time to serve hot food.

First Time for Indian Cuisine but not my last

By Yosemitesteve |

We were hungry and decided to give this place a try. We were seated outside and could see the ocean from our table. I ordered the bhanta kukhara and my wife the chicken vindaloo, both excellent choices. We asked what heat we wanted on our dishes and we were talked into a 3 but you can go much hotter and enjoy your meal. Both meals were flavored perfect and the meat was very tender. This won’t be my last time eating Indian cuisine and I’d eat here again when in the area.

Makes a nice change

By Hsteinmiller |

We had lunch here instead of the busier Cody's next door as we wanted something a little unusual. We split the Lukshya Ko Masu, lamb dumplings, and also an order of lamb Komo, lamb served in a semi-spicy sauce. Both were very, very good, and a little out of the ordinary tourist fare. Service was okay; we waited a bit for our entrée, but I think it's because it was made from scratch. Give it a try if you're in the area.

Great food - service was lacking

By Tamia J |

My husband and I tried their shrimp appetizer and we shared two dishes. All the dishes were outstanding in flavour with an ideal amount of spice for me. My husband ordered their 911 sauce (their name not mine!) as he likes fire and said it was great. My only complaint and I generally don't expect too much was the service was bad. More like a cafe style then a dinner out style service. However it did appear they were understaffed so perhaps it was an off day.

Spicy

By LaJolla-Critic |

Healthy food. Kind, friendly service. This is a great place for a reasonably priced meal. It is a short walk to the cove after.

Excellent Biryani

By Companion220677 |

Was in the village for three nights and chose this place for dinner out on the patio with a business colleague. He had the chicken Korma and I had chicken Biryani. I am a carbohydrate addict, and I love rice. I order biryani at every indian restaurant I go to. And this place had the BEST chicken biryani I've ever had. The Khorma was o.k., not great. The naan was okay, not great. The service was okay, not great. The biryani was FANTASTIC.

Tried them for lunch....

By clayncali |

We tried this spot for lunch with friends. We enjoyed a nice table on the patio and enjoyed seeing the ocean in the distance. The food was pretty good but not exceptional. We'll try it again sometime and try something different on the menu.

Delicious food

Delicious Indian/Nepali food. Chicken tikka was authentic. Mango chicken is best. Enjoyed kofta curry too. Bear options are nice. Could not try momo this time, will love to visit again.

If this is your first Himalayan, watch the spice!

By Blair Z |

The food here was awesome! It was my first Himalayan and I had no idea that it is all pretty spicy from the get go, ordered 4/10 on the spice and it was intense! I can handle heat but don't usually go for killer hot or anything, just nicely spicy, but this was difficult to eat! The taste was amazing before it burned my taste buds off! That being said, it was a nice quiet restaurant with very good service!

For something other than seafood in La Jolla

By richardbF9706RM |

This is an Indian/Nepalese restaurant, on a short street off Prospect St that slopes down to Scripps Park. The decor is great, the staff is attentive, and the food is high quality. You won't be disappointed if you are looking for something other than seafood and steaks. Nepalese food is like Indian, but it has different spices and there are different preparation methods.

Delicious and lovely little place for delightful dinner

By Caroline P |

We eat here often when visiting La Jolla. The owners and staff are friendly and make you feel at home. The atmosphere is warm, exotic and romantic. Food is very reasonably priced, and the FLAVOR is incredible! Complex, flavorful, rich and delicious. I love very spicy hot food and I have met my match. I dare you to try the 911 sauce! I was rescued from the heat by the delicious cup of chai tea done in traditional style, no barista needed.

Well worth a visit

By Clive London |

We visited the Taste of the Himalayas on our last two nights of our stay in La Jolla. We had to queue on our last visit but well worth the wait. We had intended on eating the Gas Lamp Quarter but stayed there less than an hour!. The food was excellent but be careful how hot you order your food!

Lovely Food, dated design...

By Cecilia.CC |

Food is very good, and staff very accommodating. Vegetarian and Vegan options available, and the staff is aware of the menu and can suggest accordingly. The design of the restaurant is a bit dated and can be definitely improved, but location and service overall is very good and worth if you like Indian Food.

Below average. Does not deserve 4 stars!

By Ashir T |

Food is below average and service was awful. Waiter brought appetizers and entrees at the same time and never once checked on us. He also forgot to bring a soup we had ordered. Would not recommend it. Try another place instead.

YUM!

By FussyLiz |

Hubby's favorite restaurant because of the fabulous food! For four of us, we usually get the tandoori rack of lamb, the mixed tandoori grill (which has lots of shrimp and salmon) and the navrattan korma after sharing an order of papadums. Each time we say that we really should try some of the other dishes, but since we love these three, we stick with them. A half cup of lentil soup is complimentary and rice comes with the mains. The mango lassi is very filling and makes a good dessert, although a few doors away is the new gelato place called Bobboi with lovely options. The Himalayan is owned by the same family as the place on Midway, but far less crowded and more pleasant.
