Noisy but Tasty Indeed

By ElfinWoodsWarbler |

By 5:30 on a Monday evening the parking lot was full with cars blocking exits! This sleek, small eatery does have delicious, plentiful meals with an extensive menu and is popular with locals. The drawback for us was the noise, no conversations in this place, keep to your electronics. Service was okay, food scrumptious. We had Seafood crab noodle dish with 4 different sea creatures. The Eggplant with tiny mushrooms and basil was sweet and saucy. Carry out may be the way to go.

Tasty Indeed!!

By truthfultravel |

Many people have shared about the terrible parking situation. Just plan to be there early. This restaurant was opened about 2 years ago according to the waiter. Service was good & friendly. Prices are reasonable. There are many items on the menu worth trying. The Shanghai grill pork bun was excellent. We also ordered Fish noodle soup, yang chow fried rice and the Shanghai pork wonton soup. They were all very good, except for the fried rice- portion was small and not worth the price, also with part of rice lumped together. Definite a place worth for return visit!

Yummy in my tummy

This is absolutely a gem. Every thing we ate was fabulous. The hot & sour soup was the BEST I have ever had. The dumplings all hand made were outstanding. The broccoli & garlic I dream about. This place should not be missed.

New favorite on Convoy Street

By CaitlinanTravels |

Convoy Street in San Diego had so many delicious places to eat, but Tasty Noodle House is one of my new favorites. We went with some friends over their recommendation and it did not disappoint. Large, sharable portions. I have a feeling I'll be eating a lot more eggplant basil and fried veggie noodle dishes in the near future. If you're going to dinner, arrive before 6 pm to avoid a long line!

Food is Amazing!!!

By lednerg |

I was recently here with a friend after class and decided to eat here for lunch. The place looks brand new and clean. We went in and got seated right away. We settled and ordered the Hunan style lamb, Sheng Jian Bao (Pork bun) and the House sauce noodles. The food was amazingly good. The place gets pack so quick so I would suggest to prepare for longer wait or come in early. Overall, the price is decent and the food portions I would say with the food we ordered would fit for 3-4 people. Great experience and will definitely come back again to try other food on their menu.

Excellent

By flr9003 |

We searched for a good place to grab a meal after visiting the SD Zoo and prior to departure home. This place had many stars. Deservedly so. Shrimp noodle soup, Shanghai shrimp and pepper beef chow mein were excellent. Fresh, tasty and large portions. I would return if I lived in SD.

The name fits the dishes: very tasty. Horrble parking.

This is one of many places to try on Convoy. I had seen it on my last visit to this strip mall and since I love noodles wanted to try it. I will warn you that there are way too many dining places in this center compared to available parking. Best case scenario is that there before or after the main lunch crush to find parking and avoid a long wait. That said, the menu has Shanghai style noodles and dumplings. We sampled a little of everything and it all tasted fresh and good. They are the kind of place that delivers the food the minute it comes ready. We ordered four things. The spicy chow mein came first after about 5 - 10 minutes. Then it was a longish wait for the chicken curry soup and finally after an even longer wait the two orders of dumplings came out. It wasn't a big deal as there was just two of us, but I always find this awkward when you are dining with more people and one person has their food and the rest do not. Definitely will be coming back here to try more things. The prices are very reasonable too.

Still good shanghainese food

By gzau |

Tasty Noodle has great xioa long bao, friend bao and other Shanghainese small dishes. The service is OK. They are quite popular and often have a line. The mall that they are in has parking but it is usually very full so be prepared to park on the street.

rude and bad

By Jet742700 |

the waiter is very rude. we have 5 kids and they ask for 18% tips even before seat us. and we have 9 people, they only want offer me 6 people table. really bad restaurants!

Very good food very good service

By JJCC |

We tried this place with whole family. Better to reserve a table before going otherwise you would wait for long time. Food is excellent. Service is very attentive. Strongly recommend.

Very good

By bigJohnny670 |

Went there with my friends and wasn't expecting much but I wanted something else but ramen. This place brought me back to taiwan. I remember some of the food that I had in taiwan, and this is it. Everything we ordered was delicious. I highly recommend this place. If there is a line normally you'll be seated pretty quickly.

Very solid place worthy of a visit

By Doug L |

Four of us went for dinner here, and we liked it a lot. Some reviews have compared it to Din Tai Fung, but as much as we liked Tasty Noodle House, those comparisons don't seem to stack up. BUT, the prices are good, it is much more convenient in central San Diego, the wait (at least on this occasion) was short, and the food is solid. We had xiao long bao (good), Shanghai steamed buns (great), combination fried rice (outstanding), eggplant and mushrooms (good), and wanton in spicy sesame sauce (okay). Putting it all together, however, it was a very good meal that we all enjoyed. Service is fine for the type of place it is. Some other dishes, such as the jia jang mien at the tables on either side of us, looked terrific. Except for the challenge of finding parking in the lot, it was a great experience.

Great Chinese Comfort Food!

By HPotter8 |

A new great find for Chinese food in SD. The Shanghai-style dishes are authentic (take it from a person of Shanghainese descent!). It's wonderful to see another option on Convoy (or even in SD) which still has too few truly good Chinese restaurants for foodies. Give this place shot- there's a very good chance that it will become one of your favorites!

Great food and service, reasonable prices.

By LLEE23 |

Pretty small restaurant, so get there early! Parking is limited in this strip mall which has several restaurants. Food is very good and service is friendly and fast.

Really good Chinese food

By Tom M |

I have been buying my Chinese dinners for wife and family for several years in the Greece Stone Rd neighborhood. My spouse and I(and , grandkids) often buy different dishes offered at Tasty Wok on Dewey Ave(near Carbone's Pizza) Every dish we order is better than the last. I believe they never use MSG in their food and it shows in taste and flavor. We recommend House Special LoMein as staple to dinner, and accompanied w Beef w Brocolli,Happy Family, Four Seasons, Moo Goo Gai, and over $15 you can get a PT of Sesame Chicken for_$1.99. Everything delish and fresh ingredients. Last time in for pick up, another customer said he drives from Brockport to buy his Chinese from TW, that's 22 miles man. "22X better food."

Decent Chinese food

By jakjabes |

This restaurant is a noodle house with many extra dishes on the side. We sampled their excellent eggplant and mushroom dish, a pork noodle dish, a seafood noodle soup, an onion crepe and Shanghai style dumplings. The dumplings were not moist enough and the filling was bland. Have had much better elsewhere. However, all other dishes were excellent. We made the mistake of not asking for the soup to be spicy. It would have been tastier. Overall, this is a decent restaurant, service is friendly and super fast and prices are very reasonable

Surprisingly good food

By Teresa20002014 |

have never been in this restaurant and I was very happy with how helpful the staff were. Firstly, we wanted some noodle soup and one staff was gracious enough to explain which was the soup noodle and the dry noodle. We opted for the mixed vegetarian and it was one of the best that we had. Their salty porkchop and the Yangchow fried rice were also very good. The food was not greasy and tasted very good. It is to note that the three items we ordered was requestwd with no MSG...therefore no headaches for me. The place seats about 30ish customers and the decor is simple. The only drawback for this restaurant is they need to find space for their extra supplies instead of using the restroom and to add a towel dispenser. Otherwise, we were impressed with their food and we did not encounter any rude staff

Inexpensive and good

By cleaningbee |

Very inexpensive. Food was tasty. We ordered dumpling and soup they were good. Excellent value meals. Parking is very hard to find. We parked a block away. It seems to me all customers enjoy their meals

Parking nightmare, food fantasy!

By 623DBAX |

Enough about the parking, it's horrible. The food is worth the hassle.. We (family of 4) waited on a Saturday afternoon for a table maybe 20 minutes, and were sat and brought menus by a friendly server. I'd like to point out, we were the only non-Asian people in the restaurant too. The menu, while extensive, offers a few pictures, but decent enough descriptions for us to make up our minds. We ordered shrimp siu mai and crispy pork bao along w/ a spicy cucumber salad as starters. They were delicious, all of them. We were told by someone at the door outside not to miss the "soup dumpling" or Xiao long bao, so when they arrived we were happy to have taken the suggestion. They were delicious, and full of tender ground pork and delicious, hot broth. Wrappers tender and just the right amount of "chew". House noodles w/ garlicky pork sauce came next and it was very good. The noodles cooked perfectly and not stuck together or "gloppy". The cucumber slivers and cooked egg garnish added crunch and depth of flavor. Then came a big plate of combo (pork, chicken, and shrimp) fried rice. This was the one dish I was least excited about, and it was ordered for our sons 8 and 10 years old. However, it was perhaps the best fried rice I'd ever had, and I literally had to fight my 10 year old for seconds on that one. I let him win, I love to see him eat anything he enjoys.. Lastly we were served a dish of sautéed fish, squid, and shrimps in a velvety crab sauce along w/ a bowl of ramen in a light seafood broth. Noodles were placed in bowls and topped w/ seafood, and VIOLA! That dish was magic. Perfectly cooked fish, tender and flaky w/o being mushy, the squid tender and delicious, and perfectly cooked shrimp. The sauce was rich w/ crab, and buttery, soooo good. Very happy we found this place and we'll definitely return next time in San Diego.

Do not come here unless you want to get harassed for a tip

By Sharon T |

If you look at this place's Yelp reviews, there are many negative reviews about the rude and aggressive wait staff harassing customers for tips. This happened to me and my friend. She didn't have enough money left over for a tip (as she was waiting for a paycheck to clear) and thus didn't leave one. The waitress literally threw the card holder back at her and snapped, "This one doesn't have tip" loudly enough for the next table to hear. This was very humiliating to her and the aggression was uncalled for. When I went back the next day to complain to the manager, she denied that anything like that has ever happened. I love the food here but you've lost a lifelong customer. I highly suggest talking to the wait staff at the SD location about their level of professionalism, as right now they are totally shameless.

Greasy, salty and unrefined

By travel-world-mom |

This is what a really bad American Chinese restaurant is like: greasy, salty, heavy sauces that cover up everything and lots of MSG. We are not talking about the restaurants in mainland China, Hong kong or Taiwan. Even when we talk about San Diego where one has a low expectation for Chinese food, this is bad. We had several most famous dishes from this shop and were not able to finish even half it them. We had to drink so much water in order to dilute the salt and grease. Call it whatever food, but please don't call it Chinese food, as it is such an insult to the thousands of years of tradition.

Very, very bad

By n_atiggue |

The atmosphere is nice. The food was terrible. The first terrible thing that happened was that they had a container on the table that was clear glass and looked like it had soy sauce in it. My boyfriend pours soy sauce on everything. He poured it on his rice. He told me his rice was terrible. I tasted it and said, that is weird--your rice tastes like vinegar. So I poured some of the black liquid in the container onto a spoon and tasted it and it was vinegar. When the waitress finally came by when we had finished eating, I asked about the liquid. She said it was black vinegar. I asked her why they don't mark or label the container because it looks just like soy sauce and many people would make the mistake we did. She said that they have been meaning to label it because many people make the same mistake we did. I looked around at the other tables and saw many of the tables had two containers of black liquid. I confirmed with the waitress that those tables had a bottle of soy and of vinegar on their table. I told her that she should have warned us since we only had one bottle on our table that it was vinegar. If you go into an asian restaurant to eat and you saw just one bottle of black liquid that looks like soy sauce, wouldn't you think it was soy sauce? If we would have had two bottles, then we would have thought maybe we had two different things and would have asked. Unfortunately, I didn't ask my boyfriend about his rice until we were discussing the meal and he was almost done eating everything. He is a very fast eater. For the entree, we ordered orange chicken. The chicken was tough, small pieces, covered in thick and hard breading. The waitress had promised the breading was light but that was not true. It was like eating beef jerky thickly coated and overfried. There was no orange flavor. The waitress blamed that on the "high quality of their ingredients". She said that other restaurants use strong artificial flavors to get an orange flavor but that at her restaurant, they are only using orange juice (and very burnt orange peels) so the flavor is lighter than people are used to. Uh, nice try. I have an unusually strong sense of taste and smell. So they can't pull off these lies with me. I distinctly tasted sweet and sour sauce. They are making their orange chicken with sweet and sour sauce as a base, in other words, instead of orange flavor, they are using vinegar and some sort of sugar, red coloring, and something fruity. I am guessing that it is a sauce they purchase. I used to be a food taster. I was the best food taster who went through the training at my old company. I can taste small amounts of anything. That was sweet and sour sauce. Luckily, that one entree was all we had ordered because we are careful about spending too much money in a place until we have tried it out. So we order one dish. I taste a little of it. If it is bad, we never go there again and don't waste money on two entrees. I am offended that the restaurant does not care enough about their customers to label the black vinegar when customers are repeatedly putting it on their food thinking it is soy sauce. The waitress herself said this was a repeated problem. I also think it is ridiculous that the waitress herself knew this was a problem but did not warn us as in, "Hey, by the way, that is black vinegar not soy sauce". All around, this place just does not care about its customer's experiences. Unlabeled black vinegar, orange chicken that is really sweet and sour chicken with a few burnt orange peels thrown in and then lying and saying it is because their ingredients is so high quality that we can't taste the orange. Even if the orange peels would not have been burnt black, that might have added some orange flavor to the dish. But charred, black, burnt orange peels don't taste like orange; they just taste like charcoal. So the cooks don't care either. We had one week in San Diego and this was our worst meal. We were really disappointed because there are so many good restaurants in San Diego and we could have had a delicious meal somewhere. Instead, we wasted money on this garbage. Basically, it was sweet and sour chicken jerky with black burnt orange peels and rice soaked in black vinegar. I am not sure we could have had a worse meal anywhere in San Diego. Any fast food would have been cheaper and better.

Always pleasing

No matter who my wife and I bring to this great eatery, it is always a rave review. One of the only Chinese places in all of San Diego worth going to.

My favorite place for Soup Dumplings in San Diego

By Dr. JP |

This restaurant is all about the dumplings, in my opinion. The soup dumplings are the best I've tried in San Diego so far. There are many other options to try in a nice atmosphere and in the middle of Asian Food Central in San Diego. I would highly recommend the grilled pork buns as well. The only issue with this place is parking. There are so many little restaurants in the area that parking can be impossible in the evenings and a nightmare on the weekends. Plan ahead, it will take you some time to find a parking spot.

Pork Buns

By Johnny Trekkie |

Buns Buns Buns Buns Buns...I love Buns... Pork Buns are hot and delicious here. The buns' bottoms are taut and hot, and inside so moist and meaty...so moist...it tastes so good when it hits your lips. They seem small, but the meat inside big and thick. I tried to pull the whole thing in my mouth, but it just a wee bit too big. Nice meaty pork is very flavorful. 8 buns for $8.25...so be sure to bring a friend. Friendly staff and just about everything is under $10. But get here before 6:00pm, or be prepared to wait for table, though once you order the food will come out fast. Also, the tables are jam packed in there, so you're uncomfortably close to your neighbors, whom may or may not be annoying.

Good Shanghai-nese food

By gzau |

We came here on a friend's recommendation. You have to write your name down on the clipboard at the entrance to get in line. The lunch wait on Saturday was not bad. We ordered the Xiao Long Bao which was decent and the eel noodles. The eel was good except it was a bit more peppery than normal. Overall its one of the better chinese restaurants in San Diego (which has horrible chinese food). I will go back and for dinner to try more dishes.

A Good Meal

By Sjt64 |

With all the Asian restaurants in this area, there are many to choose from. Parking here can be a nightmare but the food is very good and the prices are super reasonable. The beef with ginger scallion noodles was very tasty although a little more beef would have been nice. The shrimp with scallions were good too but given the great prices here, $16.99 was too pricy. The pork buns were fantastic. The bun was a perfect consistency, the pork well cooked and it tasted very authentic. My friend also had the fish with tofu (medium spice) and enjoyed it. I’d definitely go back to try and taste some of the other wonderful dishes that were being served to the other tables in our area.

Order Snake Gourd & The Spicy Marinated Cucumbers

By FayesFork |

The interior is quite nice. They did an amazing job remodeling Yu’s Garden. We ordered: BRAISED PORK BELLY WITH PRESERVED VEGETABLES $10.99: The pork belly is sliced really thin which I didn’t like. I like the braised pork in this dish to be thicker so it doesn’t feel like I’m eating braised bacon if that makes any sense. The belly tasted fine and incredibly tender though. There is a ton of preserved vegetables underneath the belly which pairs well with hot a bowl of steamed rice. THAI FRIED RICE: It was a nice size portion but I thought it could have used more protein. The rice grains tasted a bit stiff but that’s just me. SPICY MARINATED CUCUMBERS: This, hands down, was THE best dish of the meal (which is kinda sad since it’s a noodle house right). The cucumbers were brilliantly marinated with simply sesame oil, garlic, chili flakes. SHANGHAI GRILLED PORK BUN $8.50: There’s 8 to an order here and the waiter said it takes 20 minutes to make so order accordingly. The SJB is filled with ground pork and does indeed contain ‘soup’. There was a decent enough amount of soup which tasted mildly sweet. I thought the filling was ok but underseasoned. The dough itself was ok – nicely fluffy but could have used a bit more browning on the underbelly. KAI YANG STYLE SNAKE GOURD $9.99: We all could not have been happier with this dish. It was incredible and luckily not bitter. CRISPY FISH FILET WITH SEAWEED $10.99: Unfortunately, the batter wasn’t crunchy AT ALL. Soft fried doughy- anything will hurt a dish so we were pretty disappointed. There was barely any seasoning on the filet except the green onions. XIAO LONG BAO $7.50: skip this. Almost all of the XLB were broken. SHANGHAI PORK WONTON SOUP $6.99: wontons were huge and hand made. Soup was bland. Service both visits went fine. Parking is terrible so be prepared to find street parking.

Nice food!

Parking could be difficult here and it is quite small. We ordered Thai fried rice, Yong chow fried rice and ramen. Service is very quick. Lychee slush is good!

Delicious Food, Reasonable Prices

By BEWatermelon |

Three of us ate lunch here today; we ordered and shared family style. We all were extremely pleased. The cucumber salad was delicious. We also tried the ginger beef and noodles and loved it. Then we had two kinds of buns--the soup dumplings and the steamed dumplings with chives. They were both excellent. We ate every bite and we're tempted to lick our plates. The service was prompt and pleasant and the prices very reasonable. Highly recommended if you like Shanghai style Chinese food.

Good food for a Sunday morning

By Richard L |

Came in for it's shanghai style food. It is always a bit of wait if you don't come before 11:30am. The facility is clean and well organized. Tables are on the smaller size. Several dishes are really good: 1. Shanghai style pork bun (really good and order early, can take up to 30 min); 2. Xiao long Bao (decent); 3. Eggplant & basil leaf.

Excellent

By unhappytraveller123 |

You can be in and out really quickly because this kitchen must be on roller skates, it’s so fast. But the food is great. We have noodle soup and gungfu chicken in it. Noodles are perfect, chicken delicious, broth is nicely spicey. We follow with beef in bean sauce, a flavourful favourite. Chow mein with vegetables good, but not as good as meat dishes. We have pork buns and both the dough and filling are great. No ambiance, but great food.

My Most Favorite Chinese Restaurant in town

By ycccmr |

Tasty Noodle House has been my new most favorite Chinese restaurant in town for 4 years now (since they opened). Everything here is good. Parking can be difficult though.

Very good authentic Chinese

By KennyTinsel |

The place was full at 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening, so we wrote our name on the list out front. The list moves quicker than you think it will (many people give up!) and there are a number of interesting looking Asian restaurants at this address if you don’t fancy the wait. Not clear if they take reservations but probably worth a call. No liquor licence. Food was good. We had steamed pork dumplings, xiaolongbao, sesame noodles and dry fried beans with pork. Menu was extensive with plenty for the adventurous and enough for the timid. Service quick and friendly.

Worth the Convoy parking nightmare...

By pch1000 |

Came here for dinner on a Monday night. Luckyily there was no wait for a small table. Might have been harder for a large group as only a couple of large tables and plenty of smaller ones. Xiao lum bao and Shanghai buns were good. Beef noodle soup was very lightly spiced and not very fiery. Ginger green onion noodles was my favorite. Didn't try any drinks or other apps or dishes but want to go back for more. Parking lot can be a nightmare. Side streets may be your best bet at parking at this Convoy Street area.

My goto place for chinese

By David F |

Being from Sf bay area I am picky about chinese food. This place is excellent. All menu choices good and fresh. Noodles and steamed dumplings exceptional. Main issue is poor parking and during busy times often a wait, but its worth it. Service is also exceptional.

Not just tasty-SUPER tasty!

By Challenger007 |

Kearny Mesa is the heart and hub of good eats in San Diego. The only dilemma is where to eat when delicious opportunities abound. Tasty Noodle House is a new favorite. Everything is tasty tasty tasty, super reasonable and the service is friendly, fast and efficient. Soupy noodles, saucy noodles, sesame noodles, beefy noodles, dry noodles, steamed dumplings, wontons, Xiao Long Bao all delivered. It doesn’t seem to matter what we ordered, it all was hauntingly good. Every dish was under $10 bucks but the overall experience priceless.

Delicious!

By GH_ShrtOrDrCook |

There was a very long wait for our table, and we were a bit frustrated that we didn’t get seated when a table was available for us, but the food was fantastic. If you care about Chinese food, it’s worth driving to this place as a destination in of itself.

Amazing Shanghai cuisine

By mjgabriel |

I was completely blown away by the diversity of the menu. It is written predominantly in Chinese, but with English subtitles and plenty of pictures. Get there early, this place gets packed with locals. The portion sizes are fantastic and prices are very reasonable.

I dream about those dumplings!

By rileysm0m |

The Shanghai pork buns and xiao long bao dumplings are what you come for...wow..it will blow your mind. While you are at it, look at the pics and what everyone is ordering around you and just go for it! It's true, there are some obstacles to getting a seat to this place: parking sucks!, a well formed line outside, and a rather cozy seating area but it is all worth it!

Not much to add

By phxchica127 |

But just wanted to join in on the good reviews. Fast, efficient service. Good Shanghai style food. Terrible parking, noisy in the restaurant. This is not a fancy, date night place and not a dive by any means either. But oh those noodles are so good and fresh! We were very much wishing we had a place like this near us. Orange chicken was deep fried just right, light and crispy. Kung Pao chicken ...yum. Chow Mein could have used more veggies. Dumplings jam packed with goodness. Three thumbs up.

Outstanding Chinese food

By borance |

We were a party of six. I had "saud spira leek," which was a snail dish. The snails were good because of the excellent garlic sauce. The leek was the best I have ever eaten. One of us couldn't get over how tasty was the pork pickled vegetable noodle soup, the best he had ever eaten. A side order of pumpkin cake was excellent. My wife ordered "glass noodle cabbage tofu," which had flavors none of us had ever tasted. I really enjoyed it but its strangeness was too much for my wife. The other dishes were of the highest quality. The place is clean and modern. The waitstaff is extremely competent and helpful, taking excellent care of our Euro party. I was told that there is usually a line here but I was lucky. To me the restaurants on Convoy street are the best in the U.S. Each one has its own menu, unlike the Baltimore-D.C. area where I live, where most Chinese restaurants are pretty much the same.

Great Food and Affordable

By manongallen |

My GF and I went there while passing through San Diego. My Second time there, her first. The food (Veg Chow Mein, Thai Chicken Fried Rice, Grilled Pork Buns, Seafood Noodle Soup and an order of Egg Rolls) we ordered was delicious, especially the Buns. The Egg Rolls were okay, but all the other the food was great and tasty. Would recommend for you to try, but just be ready to find a parking space, since it's located in a small shopping center, mostly restaurants. Parking area is small and if you get there around dinner it will be difficult find one.

Fresh, Fast and Friendly

By armen120 |

We had a reservation at a different restaurant while waiting we discovered this place in the same area. We were seated promptly. The menu has a nice combination of all sorts of Asian food. We ordered sweet and sour soup, green beans, fried shrimp, pork boa buns, fried rice and fried calamaries. Everything was fresh and very tasty. The service was fast and courteous. The prices were very reasonable and affordable. Finding a parking spot was a challenge for a Saturday night so give yourself time for that. Highly recommended.

This is REAL Chinese food.

By PanPanPanRRR |

Everything in this restaurant is something we can see in China. (Not PF Chang or Panda). The taste is almost the same as what we can expect in China. We can call Tasty Noodle House an authentic Chinese restaurant.
