Great Italian food in Austin

By Triangle Food Tours |

This is the first time I went to Taverna. The location was great and the staff was very, very friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The food was very good as well. Get the Fettuccine Alfredo. Portions are large so be prepared to take some home with you.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal

By Marlies R |

We ate "outside". For starters we had the chef's focaccia, which was less like bread than we anticipated, but apparently focaccia is like a pizza base, so that was our mistake. My husband then had the veal parmigiana (which was good!) and I had the Tagliolini Scampi. I thoroughly enjoyed it, very good flavours, yummi. The wine was ok (Pinot Grigio - Masi Masianco) but I think that is a personal thing. Good service, nice waiter.

Taverna

By Janis C |

Great meal from start to finish, from dirty martini to Chicken Piccatta and creme brulee. Highlight was delightful waiter Matteo, smart, attentive and funny.

Good Italian food in a pleasant setting

By Arul Victor S |

Very welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. Was already packed when we walked in but had no problem finding waiters who were happy to explain things and suggest food. I had a seabass that was absolutely fresh and cooked to perfection.

Very good Italian culinary

By Mario V |

We had lasagna, gnocchi and spaghetti...., all of them Italian authentic! If you are looking for great Italian food while in town loll no more. Service was excellent!

Abysmal and non existent service

By Andrew B |

Just absolutely abysmal and non existent service and not because of lack of staff. Food that we did have was good, however, we cut our evening short due to the lack of service. 30 or so minutes after ordering a bottle of wine we are told “just waiting on the bottle.” Flown in from Italy? Like get out of here! Too many good options in Austin to waste your time at this place. Gave 2/5 only because octopus was flavorful. Can’t really mess up a burrata. Meh!

Great restaurant, awesome staff.

By Long Nguyen |

Food is amazing and I have never met any person friendlier than Alexa. She was knowledgeable of the menu, made great recommendation, and talked to us with great and genuine interest. It was a great pleasure to dine at Taverna and be served by Alexa.

So-So Dinner

By Wendy S |

Four of us went, the bread with dipping oil was ok. I had a pasta dish w/ creamy truffle sauce, the sauce was good but the chicken?/mushrooms? were rubbery and flavorless. My friends had lasagna ("just ok"), eggplant parmigiana (she liked it), and something off the appetizer menu (no comments). The portions were fine, but the prices were high and the service ok. I might go again, but I'm not in any hurry to go back.

Very Nice!

By Y S |

Went to eat before Lyle Lovett concert at ACL Moody and to celebrate 15th Wedding Anniversary. Loved!

Food is excellent. Service is slow.

By Kim K |

Visiting from out of town. We ate here twice during the week because food was so good. Service was slow both times.

Downtown Gem

By P M |

Nice menu. Friendly servers. Very good food. Good cocktails and wine list. Convenient location downtown. Risottos are definitely worth trying.

A very upbeat restaurant with great food

I think you can't go wrong here. We sampled several dishes and loved them all.Our waitress could not have been nicer or more helpful.

Excellent Italian fare in Austin

By smrgeog |

A really nice Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Austin. The bruschetta was really good with plenty of tomatoes. They’ve also got risotto on the menu which is a relative rarity. Food is excellent although portions were a little on the small side. Their doughnuts with the chocolate and pistachio sauces were to die for! Service and value for money is pretty good in all.

Good-Fair Experience

By David F |

Went to enjoy brunch. Got there early and asked for a table for six people. They put us at a table that really should only have five. We were sitting so close to the next table that I was touching their table with the back of my chair. Remember, this was early and they had plenty of open tables that would have sat six people comfortably. The food was good. Enjoyed the bread.

tastes like mass-produced food

By Ilya W |

My wife and I ate here late at night last weekend as part of a group of six. If you are walking around downtown Austin and come across Taverna, don't be fooled by the restaurant's location, looks and the people seemingly enjoying themselves outside or inside. And certainly don't be fooled by their website or some of the other reviews here: this is not a fancy Italian place. This place serves a lot of people fairly quickly, and the food really suffers as a result. The margherita pizza, which I had, was as flat as cardboard and didn't taste much better. The only good thing about it was that it was not overly greasy. My wife had the eggplant parmesan, which was very greasy and totally unremarkable. If it weren't for the location, I doubt many people would eat here. You certainly can do worse in downtown Austin, but there are so many better restaurants that I can't give you a reason to come here. Try something else.

It’s okay

By Blondtp |

Linguini and ravioli were amazing, the gluten free bolognese just okay. For some reason restaurants think gluten free is spice free. Service was okay we had to flag down our server several times. When we arrived with reservations the hostess tried to seat us by the kitchen and bathrooms; we had her move us.

Great rustic italian place in great spot

By RowdyRudy |

Loved the atmosphere with a great sidewalk cafe and great service. Nice decor and well laid out space. We had a dinner for four and everyone enjoyed their dish. They have a strong wine list and nice homemade pastas. The foccaia was more of a pizza, but good. The capresee salad was average. The homemade pasta was delicious as was the pizza. Our highlight was the tiramisu, truly one of the best I have ever had.

Nice breakfast

By Mr. V |

This is the second time I come here. The first time was not so good. However, being that it was a walk across the street from the W where we stayed, we thought we'd give it another try. The eggs Benedictine are very good! I was a little disappointing that the orange and pineapple juice were not natural. All in all, a good place to stop. Nothing to call home about.

A disappointing Meal

By Michael B |

For a Casual Italian eatery it grossly overpriced, even with 50/o of the wine Had the pork chop and Polenta ok but nothing special, was all cut up and covered in some kind of sauce. Also tried the house bread pudding very dry and if it was not for the ice cream would have been difficult to swallow. Saving grace was the coffee you cannot go wrong with "illy"

Family Brunch

By Maria C |

We are visiting Austin for the first time. This was one restaurant strongly recommended for Brunch. The food was amazingly delicious. Henry was our server. He was really great! Excellent service! A must stop if ever in Austin!

Best Italian Place. Ever

By tooberrytravel |

I'll hype this place up as much as I can-- the food was AMAZING!! The serving was smaller than the usual, but the perfect size for me to finish my meal. Definitely recommend and will return.

Good value

By ElvisAndrus |

If you like excellent food and a good portion for the price then this is the place to go. My wife had eggplant Parmesan and I had seafood linguine and we both enjoyed every morsel leaving our plates completely clean. Presentation of the food was nice. Service was attentive, if maybe a little stiff. Even though we were well seated, the food had been so good we were convinced to share a dessert, which was a brownie with ice cream with a fancy name. Good size so sharing was appropriate. I have no hesitation in recommending this place.

Cute, authentic Italian

By DMG08003 |

I had risotto with shrimp. The serving size was just right. The risotto was creamy, and not over-cooked. And there was ample shrimp. Everything was fresh, and service was prompt without being overbearing.

Simply lovely !!!

By Jess L |

The aperol spritz and chefs focaccia were absolutely Devine! Seating outside was pleasant and the staff warm and welcoming. The menu offers many options in true Italian form. You will not be disappointed.

Awesome brunch spot!

By Mara K |

My best friend and I wanted a good brunch with affordable mimosas. You cannot beat $2 mimosas! I had the shrimp and asparagus omelet with breakfast potatoes. THE BREAKFAST POTATOES ARE AMAZING!!!! My friend had French toast and fresh fruit. We thoroughly enjoyed both our meals and our overall experience. Super chill, friendly staff. I highly recommend this place!

Excellent food and service

By Big_Jeff_Leo |

This place came recommended and we were not disappointed. The food is excellent and the service equally good and quick, Specialist Italian but with an good expansive menu. The place was very busy which is a good sign when we arrived. Not cheap but the quality was there as the carbonara was one of the best that I have had.

Open early for Sunday Brunch

By Rudy M |

Our experience at Taverna was okay. The great thing was the convenient location and early brunch options. What could be better is how they cook their poached eggs -- a little too runny for my taste.

Good Pizza Great Location

By George A |

My wife and I were headed to a familiar restaurant before the concert one block away. We both gave each other a glance as we passed Taverna then decided why not. We ate outside because it was early evening and the weather was good. We shared a House Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette while dipping away with bread and olive oil. It was fresh and lovely. We also shared a Margarita pizza which was very good. I had their Chianti to wash all that down. In fact, I would have another glass if I knew I would be driving after the concert but we all make difficult choices and one glass carefully enjoyed did the trick. Our server was Rashad and he was prompt, attentive and quite courteous. I told Rashad my wife would be back soon to try the cheese pizza because that sauce was amazing!

Excellent Choice!

By PDXPAT80 |

If you're looking for great Italian food in an upscale casual atmosphere w/ friendly, professional wait staff, Taverna is an excellent choice. They have a diverse menu (no idea why Google Maps called it a pizza place...), w/ a variety of daily specials. Everything we had was wonderful, esp the risotto con burrata and the bacon-wrapped halibut special, which was a beautiful presentation. Portions were generous; we didn't have room for dessert.

Tasty food and nice dining area

By Anne S |

I had frittata lunch special which was good. Note that the frittata had a generous layer of cheese and the salad came covered in an excess of dressing, so not a healthy option. The dining room is busy but quiet so good for business meetings.

Just OK

By Lynne R |

The food was good, the service was good, but the atmosphere is so-so. Very white and lacking personality, not much color. Not a great experience. But location for ACL concerts is great. Wish it was a funner, more vibrant place.

Second time, second great meal.

By MagistraCip |

So happy that this restaurant continues to delight. Service was exceptionally good, and the food was far above average Italian. A nice place to relax from the summer heat of Austin.

Love the ambiance

By Melissa H |

We loved the ambiance and the food Very charming and quiet restaurant Excellent wine list. Amazing risotto! This restaurant offered more risotto choices than any other place I can remember. We would go back.

Excellent Italian food on 2nd street

By Patti G |

We came to celebrate graduation and had a lovely time. The server was knowledgeable and prompt in her service. The salad was fresh, and the pasta dishes inventive. I had a halibut special and my husband enjoyed a steak/crabcake combo. Everything was perfect. The venue is a bit loud, so if you would like an intimate conversation, this is not the place. Drinks were inventive and a great selection too.

Delicious Dinner!

By EnglishChinaDoll |

We arrived for our reserved time and were seated outside, as requested. Lovely table! Our server, Mrunal, was very friendly and attentive despite the restaurant being very busy. Our food was just delicious…from the salads to the entrees and dessert. Definitely a good choice for dinner before a show at ACL.

Delicious food at reasonable prices

By annieb40 |

Three of us shared a flatbread pizza, whole wheat pasta with turkey meatballs, a salad and two bottles of wine for $113. Pretty good! Service was good as well.

Service was a little slow, food was good

By stever761 |

The Marco Polo salad was good. A little heavy on the ginger dressing. The only ingredients that I was aware of was shredded romaine, green onions, 2 mandarin orange slices, and 5-6 1"x1"x1/4" slices of salmon that were sesame seed crusted. The salmon was cooked perfect, however it tasted salty to me. For a $19 salad I was not impressed by the amount of salmon included. My wife had the veal parmigiana. It was overcooked and lacking in cheese topping or marinara. They did, without any prompting or expectations, take it off the bill. The half-off wine (Monday's) was a deal and the beer prices were reasonable. Very busy even on Monday night. We had no wait for our table thanks to reservations. It took our waitress a more than 5 minutes to take our drink order and almost 15 before our dinner order was taken. We explained we were going to a show across the street at ACL and she said she would expedite our order. We thought an hour and 15 minutes was enough time, but I will budget more time next time. Yes we would go here again. Our waitress never checked on our food even though she did not deliver it. We were told by the food delivery person she would return with Parmesan and she never did. Nor was I offered cracked pepper for my salad. Tiny nits, but for the prices (though not unreasonable) I expected better service. The music speaker behind the hostess sound was very loud and apparently was broadcasting for the whole restaurant. We could not hear anything the hostess said to us. Getting our cork for our wine bottle and check took a long time after we were told she would bring it 5+ minutes and it was wrong as the wine was full price. We saw other servers working feverishly and assume ours was new.

I do recommend

By Thiago B |

Great food, atmosphere, and price for lunch and dinner. Happy hour has great options of beer and wine.

Happy Hour

By Amy F |

We stopped in for happy hour before a concert across the street. It was pretty full, but no wait. The drinks were good and the apps were fine as well. The service was fairly quick and the staff was friendly. I'd go back for happy hour for sure!

Great Lunch Experience at Taverna

By arianae |

We were quickly seated and greeted by our waitress and then given very warm, fresh focaccia. We order the wheat past primavera and the California pizza. The turkey meatballs in the pasta were moist and flavourful and the pizza tasted homemade with an excellent crust. Nice atmosphere and service, only complaint is that it is a bit pricy compared to other Italian restaurants.

Italian food to leave the BBQ early

By CarricktoRome |

In the land of the BBQ this place has a great selection of pasta, entrees and wine to tempt both regular and new visitors. We have already attended twice on vacation and the starters are superb, some outstanding pasta and chicken. Rich in flavour with attentive service. Deserts offer a wide selection and as a bonus they don't close early/at all for lunch like some other local Italians which may help. Top place, not massive portions, but quality makes up for that... A nice addition is for 2.50 you can add a soup or salad - and both are great!

Good food, but not the best service

By Lydia U |

To begin, on Sundays they serve brunch until 4pm, which is PERFECT for me. I like to sleep in late on Sundays and am always craving something brunchy. The wait was VERY long, even at 2pm. I can understand why the service would not be the best with it being so busy, but even after we were seated and the restaurant was only half full we were not attended to very well. In fact, my friend sat with an empty glass of water for her entire meal. I didn't want melons(cantaloupe, honey dew, watermelon) but they apparently were unable to separate those fruit from the pineapple they were serving. And they didn't inform me of this detail until probably 25 minutes after they had taken away the side of fruit that they promised to replace with melons removed. Anyway, overall it was still very tasty and a nice location, but I can't give it more than 3 stars because of the service :/

Late-Night Visit

By Jonna F |

Taverna closes at 11:00 on Saturday night, and because our daughter didn't get off work until 9:30, this was very convenient. We arrived and were seated and not once did we feel like they were rushing us. The food was EXCELLENT and the service was tip top! The only thing that prevented 5 stars was the tiny mouse we saw run across the patio where we were sitting. We were outside in the covered patio area. We didn't even mention it because it really wasn't close to us.

Dinner with colleagues

By Robert S |

Very good Italian restaurant. Food, service and wine selection was excellent. I will return. Also, downtown Austin is a great place to hang out.

Exquisite food

By Sandra B |

This restaurant serves exquisite Italian food. I tasted the most delicious lasagna I have ever eaten. The prices are pretty fair. The customer service is excellent.

Great Food, Great Location

By Dee K |

Across the street from the ACL Moody Theatre is Taverna Restaurant. They have wonderful food, wine and cocktails. Good for groups, families, friends with space indoors or out. Reasonable prices.

Fantastic food and service!

By Rebecca M |

Tried this place after looking for family friendly options and we were not disappointed! Service was great, lots of choice on the menu. Pizzas were cooked to perfection, and the frutti di mare linguini was absolutely delicious. Good wine selection available, as well as dessert options. Perfect for a family meal or a date night.

Monday night wine night

By drmader |

A new staple for Monday’s..they started 50% off their bottle Of vino on Mondays ..yes please.had a burrata caprese and some meatballs , my husband had chicken parm . Wow wanted a yummy dessert ..but we refrained..creme brûlée or soufflé next time ...for sure . Beautiful restaurant indoor , white tablecloth and lovely glassware/dishes, outdoor patio is also very nice, more upscale than some of the neighboring Italian places on 2nd . Looking forward to next Monday. Thank you

top location but average food

By SibylleR2010 |

Sadly, this last visit wasn't much better than the one a while back, like two years ago. The location is lovely and the restaurant has all the incredients to be fantastic but the kitchen does not follow suit. It's an average approach to Italian flair. Nothing on the menu stands out and what happened to the foccacia bread. Used to be so good but even that was changed to a meager replacement. Scusami!

Complimentary flatbread

By Ingrid I |

Lunch visit. Lunch special fettuccine with chicken was awesome but pricey24$. Basil tomato soup really good. Taverna salad good but dressing a little bitter. Overall a great place. The real star is the flatbread pizza they give you. Dogs allowed on patio. Waitstaff amazing.

Great Italian restaurant in 2nd Street District

By Stephen P |

I had been past Taverna many times, but only now stopped in. It was like stepping into a restaurant in Rome. Everything was very authentic and delicious. We had a pizza and drinks and both were great. The service was excellent and fast, without feeling rushed. It s a great place to visit before a show at ACL Live and have an excellent meal. Great place to relax!

Worst brunch I ever had

By TainaLajara |

I went for brunch on a Sunday morning. The restaurant was not full, we got one table right away. First, we order coffee and mimosas. My coffee mug had a lipstick stain so I didn't even try but my husband tried and said it tasted like burnt coffee. I asked to change both and they were surprised by asking both. If one was dirty, how could I believe the other was clean? Next, we order our brunch plates. I had polenta with eggs. I read it had truffle oil and I like it but it had sooooo much that it was impossible to eat. My husband order crabmeat eggs benedict and his bread was so burnt, the knife wouldn't cut it through. And the crab didn't taste as anything. I finish my coffee (the new one) and they are supposed to bring more or at least ask if you want more but they never did, since I didn't want dessert (how would I?) they just brought the check and expected us to leave! I am never going back!

Try the Fettuccine Frutti di Mare!

By Tahlia88 |

Dropped by during the dinner rush on a Friday night and they were still able to seat us immediately on the patio. I've seen some reviews criticizing the service, but we didn't have any complaints. Food was brought out quickly and we breezed through the meal. I highly recommend the Fettuccine Frutti di Mare. I was initially hesitant when I saw the pasta had a brownish sauce instead of white (I'd been imagining it would be an alfredo), but it was incredibly tasty! First time eating scallops and they were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Would definitely come back again.

Poor service and mediocre food has caused them to lose a "regular" customer

By austinjjc |

It is with some sadness that I write this review. We have been going to Taverna for many years and have probably been 50 or more time (seriously). We have been for brunch, lunch, dinner and even special occasions. Sadly, last night was probably the last time we will ever go. Taverna has taken a very sad downhill slide. I am not sure if it started when they lost one of their long term managers or if it had already begun. What we did first notice is that we used to know almost all the employees in the place and last night we knew absolutely no one. Recent turnover of long standing employees must have been high. If you look at our previous reviews, they have all been 4 or 5's based on location, service and food. The location is still spectacular but outlined below is the reason for the now 2 review. 1. We made a reservation and arrived right on time. The hostess stopped speaking to us mid-sentence to answer the phone. It was a "to go" order which she took the time to take. Management - the person greeting customers should not have to take "to go" orders mid-sentence. 2. A table had not been prepared despite there being plenty of open tables. She decided to combine two two-tops against the wall. BTW, there used to be a bench against the wall rather than chairs. It has been removed with very shoddy workmanship. The table she gave us was incredibly wobbly. So bad that she had to know this when she seated us there. Why would you do this without fixing the wobble? 3. Our waiter was prompt and friendly. But, we took a while to decide what we wanted (5-10 minutes). He told us about the specials but never bothered to tell us they were out of two items, one of which we chose - the clam sauce. Turns out they were out of the clam sauce. Why don't waiters tell you what they are out of? 4. Once we had ordered, the waiter who brought our wine (someone else) told us we didn't want the clams anyway - that they were not good because it is spawning season and "everyone knows clams are disgusting now." Well, that was news to us. We asked why they still served them (and have them in at least two other dishes that were available) and his reply was that they couldn't change the menu just because the clams were spawning and are disgusting. I appreciate the guys honesty but this is really weird for someone in a restaurant to say such a thing. 5. I ended up going with a pizza. We were sitting very near the open kitchen and I saw it come up and sit on the counter for 10 minutes (no heat lamp) before they finally served it to me when the other two people's dishing were done. Of course, it was lukewarm at best. I sent it back to be reheated which did no go. 6. The food itself was just OK. My pizza was the bianca in which I substituted mushrooms for the meat. The mushrooms were tasteless out of a can. My husband's seafood pasta (which had clams in it) was OK as was the margherita pizza. Nothing that we would crave to go back for. 7. The prices have all been raised enough that none of this should be occurring (not that it should occur at any price). We felt like the meal was very over-priced for what we had and we have never felt like that at Taverna. It is very sad as we used to just love the place and recommended it to everyone. There are so many new places to try. Taverna lost our business (for good reasons).

They really worked hard the Saturday before Coronavirus shutdown

By MNice |

We are from Minnesota and things were beginning to close up due to the Coronavirus. We needed a patio spot because we had our dog with us. We huddled into a 4 top amongst a large birthday party and some smaller groups next to the front post. We pushed the spacing envelope a little due to the dog and we were a little dehydrated due to wandering around in the sun. I must say, we really just wanted drinks. The food all looked so good, so we ordered a Bruschetta. It was great, not because it had a bunch of exotic toppings, but because it didn’t. Just regular old Bruschetta with the tomato salsa (or whatever you call it) on top. Great drinks, good food, pleasant patio. The interior of the restaurant was beautiful. The prices were pretty expensive for Italian food. Incidentally, they have all the traditional Italian favorites. The waiter was awesome and had to maneuver around the chairs, birthday group, and hot sun. Great guy, we were very happy.

Pranzare!

By pdSixty8 |

My wife and I had just got to downtown and ready to enjoy a nice lunch. I have dined at Taverna at the Domain NORTHSIDE and enjoyed it so was expected great things here too. The place was not too busy and decided to dine at the bar. I noticed this location has two sections where one is main restaurant an the other the Bacci Room which was dark and closed off. It looked like an upgraded night lounge. We were quickly greeted and I ordered a glass of white wine. From the menu I ordered a pasta dish. The service was very impressive and the whole place is very elegant. It’s a perfect place to take a date to. The wine was great and the pasta fantastico! It was just the best pasta I had in a while. It was cooked perfectly, great presentation, and filling. The taste was buttery mixed with a nice liquidity sauce. Taverna has excellent Italian character and charm where the whole package was excellent.

Server never returned

By Jasper3962 |

Stopped in for dinner for two. We were promptly seated provided menus and given water. Server stopped to drop off the wine list and never returned. Seriously this is not exaggeration. We waited for 20 minutes and yet no server. There were other customers but the place was far from packed so we were unsure why no one wired on us as other parties around us were. So we stood up, pushed in our chairs and departed without a single server, or the manager standing at the door, say anything to us. So, I can't comment on the quality of the food only to say it's difficult to get. No we will not return and do not recommend.

Awful Service and food below average

By evianlives |

I am not sure how the reviews are so good. The service was abysmal. Waited a long time for bread then had to ask for oil, then waited for that! Waited an unusually long time to order dinner too. The caprese salad was inedible, horrible tomatoes and the cheese was a mix between burrata and mozzarella which was weird and it had almost no dressing. Two of us ordered the shrimp and pasta with lemon butter caper sauce and there was virtually NO SAUCE. We complained and they brought us a side of capers and mushrooms in a tiny bit of sauce for both dishes. Then they came over to say the desert was on the house. But wait for it.....there were 5 of us, 2 of which had the really bad meal and they would only comp ONE free desert. So slap on bad customer service and you have an awful, expensive meal. Will not return.

Excellent Cuisine

By Pam S |

Let me start by saying, this place is AMAZING! We travel from San Antonio to Austin just to have dinner here. If you are a fan of Risotto, you will be so happy. My husband and I shared the truffle risotto and the Short Rib Gnocchi... why share, because we couldn't decide. My daughter (12) joined us this trip and she is the pickiest eater on the planet. Needless to say, she had the Spaghetti and devoured her meal in no time at all. Jeremy, the manager, came by to introduce himself as we had mentioned to Garrett ( our server) that we travel just to eat here. He was so pleasant and polite and let us know to call him next time we are coming in. If you want lovely food and great cocktails, you should make a reservation here... Ciao!

Food A+ Service C

By charcoll99 |

Pleasant atmosphere and not too crowded at lunchtime, somewhat hampered by snarky waiter, who couldn't seem to look at us during the ordering process, and was short when asked about menu items. The food, however, was unaffected by his attitude and was delicious, with generous portions.

Night out for late meal

By pizzauomo |

I am very picking when I eat Italian food. I thought this place was average at best. The bartender was friendly and made eating at the bar good. The pizza needed more sauce and was dry. The chicken parm was good but $25.00 was way over priced.

Good Italian restaurant!

By Laurent V |

Good Italian restaurant! Bolognese pasta is very good and pizzas too. The latter have a very fine dough and pleasant to eat. Nice atmosphere. To remember in downtown Austin.

Uninformed server

By Kiki H |

No vegan options… server not able to understand dietary needs and confused my request for pasta primavera with gluten free … this is not a restaurant to go to if you are health conscious.

Great concept and love the renovation

By Roadster2015 |

This is a place to be especially for club feeling during and after dinner. We had one of the best servers Marianna and she was very polite and customer oriented. The vibe in the restaurant was amazing with nice music and a DJ

Enjoyable!

By MSRDLD |

We went here for dinner while attending a conference in Austin. We sat inside as it was too hot to sit outside. We were not very hungry so we split an entree between the two of us and ordered dessert. I was very happy with our choices. The service was good. We had a very good experience here

italian privilege in Austin texas

By tuttifabi |

it was a real surprise to be in italy in the middle of Austin Texas the restaurant is well situated you can find an easy parking but the originality of the decor and design will take you immediately to the little Italian village with the speciality the spinach ravioli was delicious as well as the fresh bread with olive oil is offered to you as soon as seated the fresh home made pasta green and egg is serve a la dente is just a real pleasure if you come to Austin.... a real need to try

Ehh, better Italian available in Austin

By mikedallas23 |

Service was good for us but the food was just underwhelming. Most of the dishes we tried were on the bland side, overall I would put it on the same level as, say, Macaroni Grill. Italic, Juliet, Olive & June, Enoteca Vespaio and La Traviata are all superior options IMO.

Wish the kitchen matched the service.

By Round Rock Foodie |

Mediocre is a generous description for the food...octopus was not fresh, beef carpaccio was cured not raw, Margherita pizza was bland, Calzone was not crispy, truffle risotto was over salted, beef tenderloin was a great and tender cut but lacked flavor. Seems like the kitchen needs to go back and study the basics. Only positive was the excellent service from our waitress, Melissa.

Good food, but expensive

By DavidLowe0228 |

The food was awesome, but a little too pricey for me. We had the veal Parmesan and Lasagna. Both were excellent but not worth the price they were asking. I sure like using Groupons to test out new restaurants then you don't get gouged when the price is way out of wack.

Can't Compete

By CharlotteAmalie |

Terrible pizza, vegetarian pizza had huge slices of squash and, zucchini, no cheese, barely any sauce. Had one bite and still had to pay for it. The place was empty, there are so many wonderful options in this area. As we walked to our car, every other place was packed. I see why.

Get the steak and egg special!

By Dana S |

I have brunch here when I come visit my daughters in Austin. It is always great…today was exceptional! Our server Malaki was personable, prompt, fun and knowledgeable. He supplied outstanding service! The food was mouth watering good! Chefs kiss! We had the chicken and waffles along with a steak and eggs special, the lobster and truffle sauce on top of the steak was to die for!

It's all about the linguine and clams!

By AwesomeTexas |

Right across the street from the Moody Theater .... great place to grab dinner before a show. We really like the linguine and clams, and the pizza is good as well. Service has always been great.

Terrible Service

By Brandon C |

First time out-of-state visit and the service was terrible. I sat at the bar and the one bartender was obviously overwhelmed. Everything had an extended wait. No checks, no refills, no removal of finished dishes. Nothing. Had to ask others to find him for my check. Two weeks in Austin for business and this place ranked at the bottom for service.

Great Italian fare in the heart of Austin

Great menu and delicious food. The service is friendly and welcoming. There is outdoor and indoor seating. We ate here two times with friends during a recent visit to Austin and everyone had a great meal. They take reservations. Conveniently located on 2nd street just two blocks from Congress.

Bachelorette dinner, just ok.

By howmanypeopleareon |

The Bachelorette wanted to go out somewhere dressy and nice one night. I got all kinds of suggestions on TA, but none had meals under $20. Some of the crew wouldn't have been pleased with that. I read in trip reviews about bachelorette parties going to Taverna so I booked there. I had to hold the reservation with a credit card. The guy on the phone said it was a $18/person charge if we didn't cancel 24 hours in advance. The reservation was 8pm on Saturday for 8 people. I was wondering if reservations really would be needed that late, but the place was full when we got there and after we left. They asked if we were celebrating something special. I said it was for a bachelorette party and he said that was special and he'd mark it. We got there at 8pm. We were all in dresses but we didn't feel over dressed. The place was cute. We waited for 15 minutes after check in, but got drinks at the bar. We ordered Focaccia and bruschetta appetizers. The waitress said there was only 4 pieces of bruschetta so we should get two of those, but that one focaccia was large enough for the table. We said ok. Out comes two focaccias, it isn't our waitress who brought them and we tell him that we didn't order two, but should have two brushettas coming. He was very nice and said to eat up but he'd go check on the brushetta. Our waitress comes back and tells us that the "people in the kitchen are stupid" but she wouldn't charge use for the second focaccia. Weird thing for her say about coworkers to us, and of course we wouldn't pay for something we didn't order. Apps were fine. The waitress had said the focaccia would be a little like a flatbread pizza. It was not. It was like oven baked pita bread with Rosemary and oil in the middle for dipping. The brushetta went over well. A few people ordered steaks. Two gals got the prime rib special which came with Brussels sprouts. I got a steak from the normal menue. I ordered mine medium well, the gal next to me ordered medium. When the steaks came out, the the girl who ordered medium had a steak that was well done - much more cooked than even my medium well. When the waitress asked if the steak was ok and was told it was over done she said she would see if there was something they could do, but she thought they might be out of that cut. She didn't come back for a long time. My friend had a couple bites of her steak but didn't want them to think she was complaining over something that didn't bother her so she didn't eat much. Most people were almost done when the waitress came back and said she couldn't bring out a new steak but would give her a discount. She ate the Brussels sprouts which were very good, but didn't eat anymore of the steak. My steak wasn't very good, but still had some red in it so I gave her some of mine. When the waitress asked about desserts, I asked if we got anything for the bachelorette party. She said couldn't give out free drinks.... I didn't ask for drinks. I told her it was usually a free dessert. She said she could probably do that. She asked what people wanted and we ordered one creme brûlée. When I meant usually, I meant other places we had eaten that weekend. I don't know if they normally do anything for their special events, but I assumed they did since when I reserved they wanted to know if it was a special event. Before she got our dessert order, the guy that brought the appetizers came and asked if we wanted a picture. We did. He took a few and was chatting with us. This seemed to bug our waitress - she said something along the lines of, can you do this after I get the dessert orders. Maybe she needed us out of there. The bill came. The $30 over cooked steak had a $4 discount....she ate two bites of steak and Brussels sprouts for $26 bucks. Really, we should have said something more about that. She charged for the dessert as well. The bachelorette did like her pasta meal so I guess that was a win. Overall it was average. I was happy to find a "nice" place to eat that had a larger price range of meals for everyone.

Dinner before ACL show

This is our second time here before an ACL show. Service and food fantastic! Did not disappoint. Lobster ravioli for me and a calzone for my husband. Local beer featured.

Excellent italian food with an Austin twist

By NamedePlumes |

This was one of my favorite places to eat during my trip to Austin. A little pricey, but great quality food for the price. An excellent outside seating area.

Excellent service and food

By Joshua B |

My wife and I had dinner her a few nights ago and absolutely loved it. Our waiter was Marques (Marcus?) and he was the best. He gave us an excellent wine recommendation, too. We ordered a salad and the shrimp scampi and really enjoyed both dishes. The greens in the salad were fresh and the pasta was homemade, and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Would highly recommend this place.

Bestest Place

By Cruiser59 |

We stopped for a glass of wine and a snack. Had an excellent chianti and the best antipasto. The meats and cheese were excellent. There was this delicious bread and olives and artichokes. All four $20. The couple next to us said they had been there 50 times and had never seen this. Loved it there.

Average

By Schutz62 |

Some of the reviews made us believe we were up for a special meal but this place was basically a plain casual American-Italian chain restaurant dining experience. The atmosphere was nice. But the food fell short of expectations and they lack of attention to detail on the service side. We've barely started eating our appetizer and the first entrees were delivered. The risotto was not delivered at the same time as the other entrees but came fast enough to leave the suspicion that the rice was pre-cooked. Indeed, it was over cooked. Also it was a surprise that a seafood risotto tasted creamy. The pizza crust was a disappointment. Both regular and even more so the gluten free. The pizza Napolitana had too many anchovies for too little mozzarella. And to close on a poor service note, the plates of two of us were removed while the others were still eating. On the positive side, the quality of the mozzarella was good and the tomato sauce tasted more like a real Italian place than a chain restaurant. Wine selection was ok. Consistent with the food menu, the Sangiovese by the glass was overpriced for the quality. Not a place we would consider to return.

Popular restaurant with pizza, pasta, and risotta dishes

By StaceyLeeDee |

We had such a great server, that it made up for the average food. The place is very popular so make reservations or get there before 6pm. Pizza was just ok, but the risotta dish I had was good. So a mixed bag in terms of food.

Brunch

By JulieandGeorge2013 |

My wife and I went here for brunch and couldn't wait to go again the next day. We had a caprese salad and sausage pizza both were amazing. The service was friendly. The location is very convenient in the downtown area.

Trip Highlight

By KCas |

The staff here made our anniversary trip! My husband and I were walking around looking for a place to eat and happened to stop in here. BEST DECISION OF OUR TRIP! The hostess was amazing as we were able to talk to her throughout our meal because our table was adjacent to her stand. The manager found out it was our anniversary and gave us a complimentary dessert. The food was delicious. The service fantastic. This was truly a trip highlight!

Amazing food!!

Super good food amazing service the bathrooms are very clean The calzone is delicious and it could easily feed to! and the Rizzuto was awesome👍🏻

Good Food, Struggling Service

By WITraveller251 |

We happened on Taverna on a Saturday, and were pulled in by the creative menu. The food was very good, and just what we were looking for after a very early travel morning. However, the service was surprisingly slow and confused! We were in no rush, and are frequent "brunchers" so we didn't have any reason to feel anxious about the time we spent getting our menus, waiting to have our order taken, etc. We were there almost two hours, and spent most of it waiting for our food, drinks or the check. The food was good enough to return, but I sure wouldn't go there if I were in a hurry!

Great Lunch with Friends

By mimijaaboo |

We were on a road trip and made Taverna our first stop. It was the perfect start to a great get away. The guys ordered Pizza's they were able to select their toppings even though "pepperoni" was not listed it was available when requested, my husband ordered the Salamino pizza and loved it. We did go a little later after the lunch rush so were able to just relax and enjoy the drinks and food. We had a great waiter that was very attentive. We had the Bufala Mozzarella Caprese to share between 4 it was a perfect starter. I had the Tagliolini Shrimp it was light and tasty and the 4th in our party had the Antipasto Vegetariano for her meal, we all had a sample of the meals and no one had a complaint! Now let me add... this is downtown Austin so it is hard to find parking and we ended up parking in a nearby garage that was adjoining Taverna it was between Taverna and the W and it was $8 for the little over an hour we were there. We spent about $140 with the tip but that was several drinks and an appetizer. Considering the location - by the W in Downtown Austin I would not have expected any different!

Great Italian and really good Brunch

By kfaustin |

Love the Italian food here, especially the risotto. One of the most authentic menus in town. The brunch, however, is also GREAT. Get the frozen bellinis for $2 along with a great menu at a reasonable price. Wonderful people watching if you sit outside on 2nd street.

Incredible Austin Dining Experience!

By Rebecca G |

Incredible dining experience! Loved the ambiance and amazing service. The bartending staff were absolute perfection. These talented guys concocted the most beautiful and tasty cocktails we’re ever experienced!

Don’t bother. Horrible people. Have a mouth guard or ? You’ll be called drunk and humiliated!

By Carrie B |

This was my favorite restaurant. I made a reservation for my birthday. We came at 8pm. My husband and best friend went to the table while I went to use the restroom. It was prom. I gave several compliments to the sweet girls in their dresses. I never ran into a server or manager. Just walked back to my table. That day was my 48th birthday celebration and we had gone indoor skydiving. Then went to my condo to get ready for dinner. I had a glass of wine while getting ready. Upon getting back to the table I said hello to our server and asked that my husband choose a wine. At this point he told me his manager "heard me slurring" and so did he. And that he could not serve me. I was obviously confused. I was not intoxicated at all! I expected that I had new invisilign. So maybe they thought that was my slurring? I asked to see the manager that "heard me slurring" and she came to the table. I had never seen her. Her name was Samantha. The server said his name was Ryan. Because I was sober, I tried to reason that maybe they had maybe mistaken me for someone else or misunderstood my speech with my new mouth pieces. I can't stress how humiliating that was. I was mortified. I even went so far to let them know I lived close and we took a Lyft. Even though I was not drunk or acting drunk. I have no other words. Just humiliated.

Austin (gluten free w flavor) fave!

By HW |

I love this place. We found it when staying at the W. Checked here and saw great reviews and decided to try it. Excellent food. The risotto is amazing. The staff is polite and accommodating. Nothing more to say than OMG! U GOTTA TRY THIS PLACE! :)

I'm never coming back!

By mem0bautista |

I usually don't give a 1 star to a restaurant but this place completely earned it. I went for Sunday brunch with some friends, as we heard it was good and have cheap mimosas. Our waitress Mel showed a bad attitude from the beginning I guess because we had an accent, even though she was Hispanic too. After finishing our food and ordering some extra rounds of mimosas she said we needed to order more food in order to keep serving drinks. My friends ordered more food but she kept refusing to serve more mimosas. We spoke with the manager and he was even worst saying he decided not to serve more drinks because we could drive and cause and accident and make them responsible for it. That's the worst excuse I ever heard, we were just siting in our table without showing anything that would say we were drunk, which any of us weren't by the way, plus he didnt know if we were driving. I have never been told something like that before in a restaurant, if a place is not going to respect their specials they shouldn't offer them at all. I'm never coming back to a place that treat me like that, if you want to have a nice brunch in Austin with specials for mimosas better go to The Park, which by the way is cheaper.

Nice italian restaurant

By stephywang |

Very crowded, reservations recommended on evenings, we sat and ordered a pizza appetizer at the bar. For dinner I had the Tagliolini and shrimp, which was very good. Don't eat too much appetizers or you might not make it through the whole meal, but in general, I thought they were fair sized portions.

Delicious pizza

By Kathleen C |

We stopped here for a quick bite before a concert and were pleasantly surprised with a flat bread crust pizza laced with Parmesan cheese. It was topped with chicken breast, avocado , feta cheese, cilantro, fresh tomatoes and artichokes. Delicious! Definitely will return.

Never disappointing!

By Donna W |

We hadn't been to Taverna in a few years, because we don't get to Austin much, but the food is still fabulous! There were four of us dining and everyone loved their entree whether it was the risotto, pasta or pizza. As expected, the service was top notch! We will definitely go back!

Nice spot to grab lunch

By FLGal86 |

We tried Taverna during a recent visit to do some shopping in downtown Austin. The restaurant has outside tables as well as an inside dining room. We were there during the height of the day's heat, so we ate inside. Service was friendly and efficient, and our meals were very good. One of us had a parmesan risotto, which was creamy and richly flavored, and one of us had a pizza which was cooked just right and tasted great. Both meals were generously portioned, and we had leftovers to take with us. Just a little on the pricey side, but we really did enjoy the food and the visit. Would recommend if you are in the mood for a refreshing spot to recharge your batteries while you spend a day downtown.

Delicious Italian food….can’t wait to come back

By shelleyinkc |

Visited this restaurant on a Monday night and delighted wine half off. However we came for the food and we were not disappointed. Started with chef’s focaccia with prosciutto Delicious and large. I enjoyed the Burrata and tomatoes which spread on the focaccia for me was marriage made in heaven. My husband had the Caesar salad which was a bit under dressed. The highlight for me was the nightly special of sea bass asparagus and risotto. My husband enjoyed the bolognese. One of the best meals of the trip and I would go back again. Oh and service by Jeffrey spectacular!

Austin adventure

By Laurie M |

The staff was fabulous the food was better and I can't tell how nice it was to have Italian food that had the home town taste of Italy

Great Location and Food

By Brr4346AD |

Great location downtown. The food and service was excellent. We had some wine and drinks and everything was good. The pasta dishes were excellent as well as the mussels.

Lunch date

By Pioneer219360 |

My wife and I weren't really in the mood for anything in particular, just one of those waiting around for her phone to be fixed at the Apple store. So we chose the Taverna because it was the closest. When I first looked at the prices I was a little put off. But when they brought out the food my wife and I could of easily shared one meal. Both of us left with full bellies and plenty of leftovers for another complete meal. Will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Austin.

Hip and trendy brunch spot

By william s |

Austin is a great city for weekend brunch. We visited Taverna at noon on a Saturday and opted to sit inside because it was a little cooler than we anticipated. The menu was filled with stereotypical brunch items albeit with a different flair but the daily specials caught my eye. I had the lump crab meat and asparagus frittata which was delicious. My girlfriend had a salad of some kind as she always does and claimed it was the best she had ever eaten, as she also always does. Friendly service, great prices, worthwhile way to laze away a Saturday afternoon.

Brunch heaven

By Nicole_Gus_2010 |

Stayed at the W and walked around the corner to Taverna for Sunday brunch. $1.84 mimosas; need I say more? Delicious brunch offerings - it was hard to choose. I ended up with the crab eggs benedict. I don't know about y'all but I thought poached eggs should have some liquid yolk. These didn't so I did the thing I rarely do - sent them back. The 2nd try was still a bit over-done for my liking but it was still delicious and I was starving. That said, they did comp my meal so I'd definitely give this place another try. Hubby had the Taverna hash and it was delicious. Next time I'm trying the chicken and waffles! Warm atmosphere, more inviting than the Trace at the W which helped us to decide to walk down the street :)

Just ok

By budpaine |

Staff seem a bit aimless. Large areas of pizza with no seasoning. Iced tea was stale. It was a nice day in Austin otherwise. This place seems a bit empty.

Delicious and gluten free options!

By Caitlin B |

This meal was amazing! The restaurant was very nice, wait staff friendly. Great location. They have a gluten free menu and it was DELiCiOuS! I had no reaction (and I have celiac). I had a salad and gluten free pasta. Everyone in my group was happy with their meal!

My husband and I visited on

By Pam S |

My husband and I visited on June 6th for dinner. As we browsed the menu we simply could night decide and so we decided to start with the risotto with sea scallops. It is not on the menu that is shown here, but I promise it is delicious. The risotto was rich and creamy and the sea scallops added a salty bit of perfection. The risotto also had yummy artichokes and tomatoes which added a bit of freshness. Our second dish was the Gnocchi, and it did not disappoint. The short rib was flavorful and complimented the fluffy and light gnocchi. We are definitely coming back. Well done!

Yum Yum Yummy

By Tia T |

Taverna was an amazing experience. After having deciding to eat here, I ordered the risotto with chicken. It was very moist and there are tons of flavor. The creaminess paired well with the smokiness of the bacon and the hint of spice from the peppers. The staff (Mack)was friendly and attentive. We sat on the patio and although it was the middle of December, the weather was perfect and being able to view the city walk and drive by only added to the ambiance.

Best Brunch!

By Kati |

My friends and I had a really great experience at Taverna. The hostess was superbly friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was cozy and there were families, couples, and groups enjoying Sunday Funday. Our server was sweet and took our order correctly. The restaurant was very clean and tables filled up fast. The food was delicious, the menu varied, and the mimosas cheap - $2! They also allowed dogs in the covered patio. Needless to say, my girlfriends and I are looking forward to making this our monthly brunch spot! The only downside is finding parking in downtown, so if your hotel is walking distance, you're in luck. They don't take reservations (for brunch at least) so try to arrive early with a complete party.

Great place to take visitors

By rmogan |

Taverna is one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Austin. You can always find parking in the nearby garages, there's usually little to no wait time to be seated, and their patio seating facing 2nd street makes for some great people watching. This is a great place to take friends or family who are visiting the city. It's a little pricey by my count (semi-broke millennial here), but their dishes are so tasty it's worth it.

Good food

By Tyler R |

I went here with some colleagues and the food was delicious. They both had a pizza and were pleased. I tried the Gnocci Rustici and it was excellent. Service was great and we were able to sit right down. They had a nice wine selection as well.

Great food with great shopping close by

By h0llyca |

What goes better than great food and shopping cool shops in Austin? A cool glass of white wine or glass of locally brewed beer! Taverna is my favorite restaurant in Austin because the food is good, the location is outstanding as it's close to hotels, shopping and the Congress Street Bridge.

Delicious food with very average service

By Katrina C |

Such a shame that the service lets this place down because the food is delicious. The 'door greeter' spent most of his time sitting looking at his phone and the serving staff appear junior and in need of training & guidance. With some training and management, this place would be 5 stars.

Always tasty, and the covered patio is key for us dog lovers

By Sam M |

Visited Taverna for Valentine's Day and was pleasantly surprised I didn't have to commit to a pre-fix menu and a long meal. My go to here is the whole wheat spaghettini with turkey meatballs and it never disappoints! Fast service and decent pricing make this my go to when I'm hungry. Pizzas are always good too!

A Delight

By island1man |

Walked in due to crowd. Smelled great. Service good and friendly. Had a pizza. Excellent. Would recommend for lunch or a informal dinner.

Fine Italian Food, Great Service

By TravelerPaul_12 |

Excellent food. Daily entree specials are gourmet delights. Open oven, wood fired focaccia makes for a delicious appetizer for 3 or 4 people. Very good cocktails. Convenient location, across from Austin City Limits (fills up before a show; so make a reservation).Friendly, knowledgeable servers.

Nice Casual Italian Food Downtown

By Conseiller99 |

We were looking for Italian food on a Sunday afternoon downtown, and were very happy with Taverna. Nice pizza oven with tasty pizzas; pastas, and even omelettes your way if looking to bridge brunch. Very reasonable wines; the place was packed; no reservaitons. Nice staff.

Great Food with Friendly Service

By Mo C |

We were in Austin for a conference and this was across the street from our hotel (The W Austin). There's plenty of seating outside as well as inside. We were a large party and they were very gracious to seat us. The food was really good, pasta was perfect. We had a selection of pasta dishes and pizzas. I would recommend Taverna.

Illegal Activity, Drunk Men! Spend Money Elsewhere!!

By Hi |

Worst restaurant I have ever been too. My experience on Saturday was honestly insane. Our waiter was extremely rude, talking back to us, rolling her eyes and rarely visting our table. We had to get assistance from other waiters and the manager to do simple things such as order food and get our bill. The added gratuity charge was over the normal amount and it honestly felt like we were being taken advantage during our visit especially after many versions of our bill were brought to us. On our way out passing the bar, a drunk guy wrapped his arms around one of my friends and started to dance on her. Many people in the restaurant turned around in disgust and we were all extremely upset and scared, especially as women. After this extremely terrible night, the next day I find myself with extra money being added to my total bill. Turns out the waitress added extra gratuity to our bill even though the receipt clearly stated $0. That is illegal and completely unacceptable. I wonder how often this happens here, the only reason I noticed it was because my bank gave me an alert. Overall I wouldn’t recommend you ever step foot into this establishment. What we thought was an elevated restaurant turned out to be an experience worse then a fast food restaurant. Not worth the $40 an entre price. Save your money, go somewhere else!

Early Sunday Dinner

By DarrenH0520 |

We ate early so the crowd was rather small, most of whom sat on the patio area: my wife and I sat indoors. The ambiance is terrific for an Italian restaurant. All of the wait staff is young and a little under attentive. The food is good. I tried the House Lasagna, which my wife and I thought was excellent. She had the scampi, but we were not impressed. I wouldn't mind trying this restaurant again if in the mood for Italian but most likely will give another restaurant a try first.

Happy Happy Hour

By Ron A |

It is a happy place that looks lively. Without prior knowledge I strolled down the street looking for dinner place. Taverna stood out. The hostess promised was very kind and offered to join the happy hour at the bar. Great Pizza (thin, crispy, full of taste), good house salad, good house red house wine (merlot), good service, great price for the food and great ambience.

Great Brunch!

By Cindy F |

Had Shrimp and Asparagus Omelet with side of bacon. Wonderful and they are dog friendly. Patio is nice and mimosas are a steal during brunch.

Clams in white sauce were delicious, as well as the bread with dipping sauce!

By winopentennis |

This Italian restaurant in downtown Austin had the best waiter/waitresses who provided excellent service and OH, the food! Would go back all the time if I could! Good wine list, and the bread!

Dinner

By rhall8202 |

Great atmosphere! This was the third time to visit. We had lots of fun. We enjoyed the food mor the previous times. It was good this time but came out a little on the cool side. Taste was still very good and portions were plenty. Service also good.

Craving Italian in the land of BBQ

By 536gloriap |

Lovely atmosphere with a cool understated vibe. Beautiful bar. A business dinner with close colleagues turned into a gourmet meal. The bruschetta was outstanding. My veal was perfection with hints of lemon and butter. The side effects f pasta was perfectly al dente with a light white sauce. My friend had the sea bass with mango sauce served on a bed of potatoes that was out of this world. Servers were attentive and well informed about the menu.

Great wine and good service

By Karen R |

Good food for the price. We enjoyed the outside dining. We had shrimp scampi and pork belly special. Enjoyed both entrees. Exceptional Tuscany wine for the price. The wait staff Was especially attentive.

Worse experience EVER!

By NikitaWorld07 |

I went to this restaurant with my husband for brunch and we will NEVER EVER go back. Service was below poor level and food was simply horrible. We arrived and waited to be seated for about 40' but we knew it was busy so we decided to stay. After waiting for about 15-20' for a server to take our order, we finally had a glass of water pored in front of us. Huge relief considering the hight temperatures. Finally, after about 1 HOUR! of wait, we got our food. I ordered a spinach and cheese omelette that came with red potatoes on the side. I took my first bite and realized my food was cold. It literally looked like my dish has been seating out forever. (the food looked overcooked and re heated). The stomach ache that followed from eating that one bite completed my dissatisfaction about this place. Don't waste your money in this place. It isn't worth it.

Good Saturday Brunch

By edra45 |

We went there for brunch on Saturday. The restaurant was crowded but we found room at the bar and ate there, starting with mimosas. We shared the vegetable omelet which was full of asparagus, spinach, tomatoes, and mushrooms. It came with an Italian style pasta sauce, which was different, but worked well. It was delicious. It came with fruit, and we added potatoes as a side. We would go back.By sharing your experiences, you're helping travelers make better choices and plan their dream trips. Thank you!

Dogs allowed on the tables

By TWS34 |

Sitting having a drink, waiting for food and lo and behold, what do we see??? A woman on the patio with her dog on her table!!! Really? How disgusting. And the waiter petting the dog! Needless to say, we asked for the check before we could eat and left. This is so unsanitary and I should call the health department on them! Don't come here unless you want to eat dog hairs and the germs that come with having dogs on the tables! Gross!

Great food

By Jutta Z |

We stopped here for a late lunch on a Saturday. The food was really excellent. Service in the beginning a bit strange (we had to ask multiple times for cutlery) but improved during the stay. The focaccia would be a reason to come back.

decent italian...

By poopshooter |

Ended up here while walking about looking for place for dinner. Big open dining area with a bar on the side. Tables are rather close to one another so not that intimate. There is also an al freso ish area facing the street. Service is friendly & attentive. Notable mentions would be the fritto misto, bufala mozzarella caprese & veal parmigiana. Good size portions & of high quality. Didn't try the desserts but they did have some interesting options.

Deserves 5 Stars!

By Lissa K |

A work colleague, and I just lucked into this restaurant on a Saturday evening when we were tired, cold, and hungry. What we actually were was lucky! Our white person, Mrunal was 5 STAR ⭐️ as was the food. My friend, and I shared to dishes which were beautifully divided, and then presented to us. The Caesar salad had micro greens and a perfect dressing. The Ravioli Maremani ( spinach and ricotta in a sag butter sauce) was heavenly. The portions were large enough that neither of us left hungry.

Second Chance

By Mike S |

Second attempt at this restaurant… and glad we did. First time wasn’t the best for service or food … this time, we sat inside and had a terrific experience. Great service and amazing food. The bread and olive oil to start with … great. Monday is 1/2 off wine bottles … so we partook. Had the bolognese and wife had the squash ravioli. We split a Caesar’s Salad. Perfect amount of dressing and both entrees were well done!

Nice Italian-Style Menu in Downtown Austin

By SeanOden |

Taverna is a popular restaurant on West 2nd in downtown Austin, there are other outlets elsewhere. The happy hour has been recommended to me but I was not there for that. The restaurant has a bar and a large open dining area with a high ceiling. There is also outdoor seating with is enclosed in a plastic tent-like structure. It may be heated but was not being used when I was there. I went in on a Sunday just around noon when the brunch menu was being offered. The place was quite busy but I was able to get a table. By the time I left it was almost full. Service was good, and there appeared to be sufficient staff to keep things moving. I tend to think of brunch in terms of buffets, but the menu mostly had a range of standard items you might find in an Italian-focused restaurant, as well as others. I ordered a house salad ($6.50) and lasagna ($18.50) and a coffee ($2.75). I decided not to order a drink, although the server was keen on what they had to offer. The salad came with a vinaigrette dressing, and was good. The lasagna included ground beef, pasta and cheese of course, mushrooms and a bechamel sauce. It was very pleasant, and a good choice for the middle of the time - not too heavy but still substantial. So this was a pleasant dining experience in a popular venue. Prices are in the mid-range. I would come back (after I had tried a few more Austin restaurants) and would recommend it to others.

Tasty italian food

By Tron |

We went for lunch with colleagues, and I really liked my food, which was pasta with chicken and mushrooms with truffle oil. There was renovation work going which made some noise but it wasn't too bad. Recommended!

Amazing

By Marissa C |

Our server Victoria was absolutely amazing! From the moment we sat down, she was so friendly, attentive, and welcoming. She went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and always checked in at the perfect time—never too much, never too little. She knew the menu so well and gave great recommendations that we loved. You can tell she really cares about her guests and loves what she does. Honestly, Victoria is the best waitress we’ve ever had, and she made our dining experience unforgettable. We’ll definitely be coming back and asking for her again!

Don’t come here. Not worth the $

By Tat P |

I had the absolute worst experience. Our server was very rude, and never checked up on us and took very long when she did come around. Then our food was cold and over priced. Then the server added her own tip in addition to her already 20%. And my friend got harrased by a drunk man at the bar.. never go here..

unexpected pleasure

By peterm23 |

Hadn't been to a downtown restaurant in a while and wanted to impress an out of town guest. Our friend requested Italian so we looked at the choices around the J. W. Marriott where she was staying. We were a bit concerned because our friend is a world traveler and has sampled the finest restaurants. We selected Taverna on 2nd St. and it was a wise choice. Our friend had the risotto special and loved it. We had the lemon sole and salmon piccata and they were delicious.

Nice Surprise

Looking for something walking distance from hotel and not BBQ. Had an exceptional, pleasant dinner here. Ordered the Risotto Al Pollo E Balsamico and it was delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend and will definitely return whenever I’m in Austin.

Great food, reasonable prices

By TravelingPat |

This restaurant has a good variety on the menu. Everything was fresh. Service was great. Prices much lower than what you'd expect in Austin.

attentive bar staff, average food

By work2play_now |

Randomly stopped into Taverna before an ACL show on a Saturday night. Ordered the house salad (fresh but sparse) and margherita pizza (tasty but pricey).

Great pre-ACL dinner

By SoFlaDave |

Going to ACL for Allman Family Revival and Taverna is right across the street, so no brainer Sat at the bar and service was great. The bartender is the hardest working lady in the restaurant business. Just awesome. I told her I had to go take a nap just from watching her work. Drinks were perfect. Tasty and not crazy strong. Food was great too. I had spaghetti and the sauce was superior. Highly recommend Taverna.

Long meal with old friends

By Carol J |

While the food was delicious, we were there with old friends that we hadn't seen in a long time. I give the staff credit for not rushing us as we sat there a very long time talking. Of course, it was a Wednesday night, so there was no one waiting for our table. Wine, dinner, dessert, service, all excellent!

ATTN owner - questionable manager

By YoureMyButterhalf |

Food was good but observed questionable manager. Music came on and he encouraged young female waitress to dance and took picture of her backside. Have you not heard of me too movement or hostile work environment? Disappointing...

Good Italian food

By Shelly A |

Went for salads and GF bolognese. Delicious and fast service. Many diners for lunch. Nice ambiance. Good for large parties.

Nice place for brunch

By David K |

We had a wedding party brunch the next morning for 20 people. The restuarant was helpful in planning our seating in advance. The service was very good and friendly. Food was good and delivered timely for such a large group.

THE BEST FOOD!

By Donald H |

We were in Austin last week and our daughter took us to the Taverna for dinner. The food and customer service was fantastic! The prices were all under 20 dollars per person for a fantastic meal!

Refreshments!

By deannay2017 |

After some shopping we needed a refresher! Taverna was just the right place. Some bruschetta and cool cocktails were just the right thing! If it had been a little later this would have been a perfect dinner spot!

Very good

Outside dining was nice for people watching and very dog friendly. The gelatos are awesome. I love the Pumpkin ravioli. Attentive service and good wine selection.

A weekend at the Austin Opera

I have visited this restaurant on numerous times. I have always enjoyed the food and the service. I recommend a reservation for evenings, especially on weekends. Prices are moderate.

Very good formulaic Downtown Italian

By Walter T |

Good place for a Sunday lunch/brunch. We ate at the bar as there was a long wait for a table. Very pleasant experience and good salads and pizza, but outstanding pasta Bolognese. The Lombardi Group knows how to please.

Great location,average dining experience

By AvidConcierge |

I stopped in for a late Sunday night dinner and was pleased (but not overwhelmed). Service & the meal itself was good. I had an wood fired pizza and mixed green salad. The location is perfect for any time of the day. It's quite close to the river.(which makes it ideal for visitors & locals alike). I was a little dismayed by the night manager sitting at the end of the bar. She was a bit loud and brass when communicating with the staff.Overall, I'd visit again at a different time.

Good location

Traverna is on Second Street with other restaurants. We decided to sit outside as it was so nice out. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and suggested a red wine (Chianti) to try, which turned out to be very good. I had the lobster ravioli, which was good. My wife had the seafood pasta, which was just okay. We thought both dishes needed more sauce. Our waiter seemed to get busy inside and was scarce after our food was delivered. We are rating this as okay, but not great.

Return Visit

By Jim T |

Having dined here previously several times, we ate here again before attending a concert at ACL across the street. We had a reservation, but still had to wait for our table more than 10 minutes. Our server (Alora) was excellent, and recommended one of the specials, which one of us ordered and loved. Two of us spilt a pizza, and another pasta dish completed the picture. The food was uniformly good, however no bread was brought to the table to accompany the pasta dishes--a major faux pas in my opinion. Dessert was good and we were out of there with time to spare to get to the show across the street. Prices seem to have been raised since our last visit (maybe a year ago).

Nice ambiance, but rubbery chicken

By Mary A |

Went here for dinner with a friend. Really nice atmosphere for a nice dinner. I got the lemon chicken and unfortunately the chicken was rubbery. All the sides and bread were good though.

I had the pleasure of being served by Victoria during my visit, and she was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we sat

I had the pleasure of being served by Victoria during my visit, and she was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we sat down, she was warm, welcoming, and attentive without ever being overbearing. She made excellent recommendations, checked in on us at just the right times, and ensured that everything came out exactly as ordered.

Excellent Italian in Austin

By aggieman92 |

Neat place right on second street. Walking distance to a lot of the hotels. One of best veal parmigiana I've ever had - light, cheesy, great sauce. Wood fired oven pizzas are also very good. Will eat here again! Looking forward to trying other homemade dishes from the menu. They looked great!

Okay food, nice ambiance

I had a gluten free pasta with chicken and truffle sauce and it was delicious. The server was very nice too and recommended me some gluten free options.

Food is delicious

By Liviapcastro |

The place is very comfortable, good attendance, enough variety on the menu. The food is really good. I had a risotto with truffle, really delicious! Quantity of food is enough but could be more, since it's really taste.

A perfect, romantic evening

By Florida Peggy |

We enjoyed a nice bottle of wine (Monday is 1/2 price bottled wine) and a delicious dinner of pasta and a pizza. The service, music, food and overall ambiance was excellent. A memorable evening.

Fantastic dinner on our last evening

By Kathy H |

Amazing drinks and food! From the cocktails, wine, lobster appetizer, salad, ravioli and seafood pasta special to the espresso and tiramisu - it was a 10! I highly recommend it for a special dining experience. Alberto was our waiter and all of his recommendations were spot on.

Lunch Break!

By teddymalice |

Walked over two separate times in the same week. The first time we had a vegetarian pizza (it had pine nuts and never had them before). It was tasty, the crust was nice and flavorful, light and crisp! Unfortunately, seems that pine nuts do not react well with me. Went a few days later and had the gnocchi-dude! Dude?!? Oh, em, geees! So delicious, hearty and filling, the sauce was meaty and very reminiscent of papas con carne. Lol (at least that was the flavor I can best compare it with.) I peaked over at the next table- the desserts looked yummy. Try it for yourself!

Great Location, Okay Food.

By Paige |

Great location downtown. Visiting from out of town, the food was good, and service was okay. We had some cocktails and salads for lunch--a bit overvalued but nice ambiance.

peaceful food with a view

By Hank956 |

Nothing better than eating in downtown Austin in a warm cozy restaurant. This is a great place. Daily specials with all the your favorites. Slight different applications of your favorites. The focaccia is thin like a pizza with great options. Today came in with a friend he got the knocchi, he was happy. I ordered the special. Two scallops over risotto with crab and veggies. This was great, the scallops were large and should have shared. Crab meat over the scallops with great balsamic around the plate. The scallops were cooked great, great sear and succulent. Melissa our host was wonderful. Thank you

Well-prepared food, nice menu selection, friendly service

By joancdesigns |

We went for a late lunch after a road trip. We were very hungry. Taverna didn't disappoint. Excellent bread, fresh, flavorful salad, and delicious pasta dishes. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Reliably good all-around.
